Apple
Festival updates and reminders:
- Admission is $4 and is cash only. To keep the
line moving quickly exact change is appreciated
- The truck of apples arrived early this morning
and we've now added the list of apples available to buy and taste,
as well as the list of apple trees for purchase to our website. This year we
have over 41,000 pounds of delicious apples and 25% of them are
organic!
- We have a bike valet service at our main
entrance. Biking and walking are your fastest, easiest and cheapest
way to access the event. If you do drive, there is a FREE shuttle
bus from the UBC Campus West Parkade
- No pets are allowed in the botanical garden.
Please leave your furry friends at home
- BC Fruit Testers Association will be hosting a
physical display of the nearly 200 apple varieties that are still
grown in British Columbia. Members of the association are also
on-hand to give demonstrations of grafting and cider-pressing. Try
to stump them with apple varieties from your garden, as they are
experts at identifying apples (hint: bring along six apples from
your unidentified tree)
We are
also pleased that our friends at the UBC Farm will be joining the fun
with Heritage Orchard Tours. See below for more information:
On October 15 and 16, 2011 the
UBC Farm is excited to be joining the UBC Botanical Garden Apple
Festival. In addition to a booth on-site at the festival both days, we
will be offering tours of the UBC Farm Heritage Orchard on Saturday
October 15 at 10am, noon and 2pm.
The UBC Farm Heritage Orchard
was designed, grafted and planted as a student directed study beginning
in 2005. A sanctuary for apple culture, the orchard is composed of ~120
trees, including ~70 varieties of apples and a handful of plums. 2011
marks our first year of significant harvest for market sales and the
orchard is producing gorgeous apples. Come visit this urban agricultural
gem for tours with UBC
Farm staff who care for the orchard on SATURDAY October 15 at the UBC
Farm! Meet at the UBC Farm entrance gate. No UBC Farm orchard tours will
be offered on Sunday.
The UBC Farm is a 20-30 minute
walk, a 10 minute bike ride and a 5 minute drive from the Botanical
Garden. See map
link for details. Tours of the UBC Farm Heritage Orchard are free,
though donations are gratefully accepted.
