The Piri Reis Map: Where’s The Lost Map Of Columbus?

In 1929, a map rolled up on a dusty shelf in a library at the Topkapi Palace in Constantinople (present-day Istanbul), Turkey. The map is now famous as the “Piri Reis Map,” which has sparked a heated debate worldwide.

When discovered, the Piri Reis Map drew immediate attention as it was one of the earliest maps of America and the only 16th-century map that shows South America in its proper longitudinal position about Africa.

The map is drawn on gazelle skin and was compiled in 1513 by Ahmed Muhiddin Piri, better known as Piri Reis, who was an Ottoman-Turkish military admiral, navigator, geographer, and cartographer.

Approximately one-third of the map which survives shows the western coasts of Europe, North Africa, and the coast of Brazil. Various Atlantic islands, including the Azores and Canary Islands, are shown, as is the mythical island of Antillia and possibly Japan.

The most puzzling aspect of the Piri Reis Map is its depiction of Antarctica. The map not only shows a landmass near present-day Antarctica, but it depicts Antarctica’s topography as not being masked by ice and in great detail.

But according to the history books, the first confirmed sighting of Antarctica occurred in 1820 by the Russian expedition of Mikhail Lazarev and Fabian Gottlieb von Bellingshausen. On the other hand, it has been estimated that Antarctica has been covered with ice for around 6000 years.

Now many people have raised the question, how could a Turkish admiral from half a millennium ago map a continent’s topography that has been covered with ice for thousands of years?

Reports have been published claiming that the Ottoman Empire knew some form of ancient Ice Age civilization. However, these claims are generally considered pseudoscholarship, and the scholarly opinion is that the region sometimes thought of as Antarctica is more likely Patagonia or the Terra Australis Incognita (Unknown Southern Land) widely believed to exist before the Southern Hemisphere was fully explored.

On the map, Piri Reis gives resource credit to a map drawn by Christopher Columbus, which has never been discovered. Geographers have spent several centuries unsuccessfully searching for a “lost map of Columbus” that was supposedly drawn while he was in the West Indies.

After discovering the Piri Reis map, an unsuccessful investigation was launched to find the lost Columbus source map. The historical importance of the Piri Reis map lies in its demonstration of the extent of Portuguese knowledge of the New World in 1510. The Piri Reis map is currently located in the Library of the Topkapi Palace in Istanbul, Turkey, but is not currently on display to the public.

Ghostly glow in alien skies: 'Zodiacal light' possibly spotted on 3 exoplanets

Watch the sun set from a particularly dark patch of Earth and you may spot a triangle of what scientists call zodiacal light extending from where our star passed below the horizon.

Zodiacal light in Earth's skies is created when sunlight bounces off the dust that fills the solar system, the remains of pulverized asteroids and flurry left by passing comets. And according to new research by a team of astronomers and high school students based in China, a similar phenomenon occurs in the skies of at least a few potentially habitable exoplanets. The light could be one more clue for scientists seeking to puzzle out what those exotic neighborhoods might look like

"If we can detect zodiacal light from a distant planet system, then this system likely has components like asteroids and comets, which can't be easily detected directly in other ways," lead author Jian Ge, an astronomer at Shanghai Astronomical Observatory in China, said during a news conference held virtually on Jan. 13 by the American Astronomical Society. Ge had been scheduled to present the research at a meeting organized by the group that was canceled due to COVID-19.

Ge and his colleagues — including a team of high school students — evaluated 47 different potentially habitable worlds studied by NASA's Kepler space telescope, which ended operations in 2018. For each planet, the team gathered a host of data, from sources including the European Space Agency's Gaia mission, NASA's Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) and Spitzer Space Telescope and more.

These data helped the researchers determine which planetary systems were brighter in infrared light — wavelengths we feel as heat — than they might have expected. Next, the team checked whether other factors, such as background stars, might be to blame. The process left three planets where the researchers say zodiacal light may shine: Kepler-69c, Kepler-1229b and Kepler-395c, all of which are classified as "super Earths."

Exactly what skywatchers would see at the surface of these alien worlds likely varies from planet to planet, Ge noted during the news conference.

"You can imagine the zodiacal light may look very red," he said of Kepler-1229b, which orbits a red dwarf star.

Kepler-69c, meanwhile, may be a "super Venus" world, larger than our next-door neighbor but equally inhospitable. "We can imagine that this planet's atmosphere and surface look like those of our Venus," Ge said. "It may have a runaway greenhouse effect on its surface, and the atmosphere may be thick and hot, while the surface would be extremely dry." (A thick atmosphere would likely make the zodiacal light more difficult to see.)

Right now, with only three candidates among 47 planets, the researchers can't say that zodiacal light is a particularly common sight on potentially habitable worlds, but that may change when astronomers can use more powerful observations than those of NASA's WISE mission, Ge said.

"When the sensitivity improves, we may see more systems that have weaker dust emissions," Ge said.

The elaborate tomb of King Djoser, a pharaoh who lived more than 4,500 years ago in ancient Egypt, has been opened to the public following 15 years of extensive restorations. 

The structure - known as the South Tomb - is largely underground and includes a labyrinth of corridors, decorated with hieroglyphic carvings and tiles.  

However, the pharaoh was not buried in the South tomb, but was laid to rest in the famed Step Pyramid nearby, which was built by his personal architect Imhotep.

The South tomb, built between 2667 BC and 2648 BC, is thought to have been constructed for symbolic reasons, or perhaps to hold Djoser's internal organs, said Mostafa Waziri, secretary-general of Egypt's Supreme Council of Antiquities.

The two structures make up part of the Saqqara complex near Cairo - one of the country´s richest archeological sites. 

The Step Pyramid is the oldest known pyramid and one of the first examples of monumental architecture from the ancient world, according to UNESCO. 

And the massive structure is believed to have been the inspiration for the Pyramids at Giza.

The South tomb, however, features stunning turquoise stones lining the inside walls that also feature intricate carvings.

However, the burial vault, according to experts, is too small to hold adult human remains, revealing the tomb was never built as King Djoser's resting place.

The South tomb was crumbling due to neglect, fierce desert winds, and eventually damaged by an earthquake that hit the area in 1992. 

Egypt's Ministry of Antiquities and Tourism said the opening of the South Tomb marked the completion of restoration work that started in 2006 and included reinforcing of the underground corridors, refurbishing the carvings and the tiled walls, along with installing lights throughout the once dark tunnels.  

In addition to the South Tomb, the Saqqara plateau hosts at least 11 pyramids, including the Step Pyramid, as well as hundreds of tombs of ancient officials and other sites that range from the 1st Dynasty (2920 B.C.-2770 B.C.) to the Coptic period (395-642).

It was built entirely out of stone by the ancient Egyptian architect Imhotep in the vast Saqqara necropolis south of Cairo, and was believed to be the final resting place of King Djoser, founder of the Old Kingdom.

Dosjer's pyramid was a revolutionary concept, the pyramid prototype providing the blueprint for all future Egyptian developments, including the three that stand beside the Sphinx at Giza 12 miles to the northwest.

The step pyramid is made up of six mastabas (rectangular structures) stacked on top of each other.

Dating to 2,680 BC, the Djoser pyramid was designed and built under the direction of Imhotep, described by some as the world's first architect and Djoser's vizier.

The Step Pyramid had its own series of extensive renovations and reopened to the public in March 2020.

There are huge pyramids in Egypt and other places around the world, but there’s only one Great Sphynx (the one on the photo above) … or are there more? Not one but TWO giant sphynx statues were discovered recently in western Luxor – proving that Egypt’s sifting sands have many submerged secrets yet to be seen.

“The Egyptian-German archaeological mission headed by Dr. Horig Sorosian succeeded, during the current archaeological season, during the ongoing work of restoring the statues of Memnon and the funerary temple of King Amenhotep III, known as the “Temple of Millions of Years” on the western mainland in Luxor, in revealing a group of huge stones for two royal statues in the form of the Sphinx. and the goddess Sekhmet, in addition to revealing the remains of walls and columns decorated with ceremonial and ritual scenes.”

Experts have been looking into the site since 1998

The Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities announced the discovery of two 26-feet-long “colossal limestone statues” of King Amenhotep III in the form of a Sphinx in a back area of the once-enormous mortuary temple of Amenhotep III, which was ironically called the Temple of Millions of Years – it was destroyed by an earthquake 200 years after his death in 1350 BCE. Having a long life and a peaceful 39-year-reign, Amenhotep III had plenty of time to build his temple honoring himself – the “the beloved of the god Amun-Ra” as attested by an inscription on the chest of one of the sphinx statues. At 26 feet (8 meters) in length, these sphinxes of Amenhotep III were huge, but would still be dwarfed by the Great Sphinx of Giza – which measures 73 meters (240 feet) long, 20 meters (66 feet) high and 19 meters (62 feet) at its widest point. However, their size vaults them into a tie for the #2 spot on the list of largest sphinxes with the so-called “Alabaster Sphinx” of Memphis, discovered in 1911 buried in the ruins of the Great Temple of Ptah at Memphis and still unidentified. Rumors of the discovery of a sphinx the size of the Great Sphinx circulated in late 2021 but the were denied by the Egyptian Ministry of Tourism and Antiquities.

Studies have indicated that it is likely that this statue dates back to the post-Amarna period when the works continued Restoration in this temple by artists and writers.”

No, not THAT February 14th Valentine’s Day – Egypt has its own day of love celebration on November 4 which this press release dates back to the post-Amarna period starting in 1332 CE with the reign of Tutankhamun. Not called “Valentine’s Day” back then, it seems to have been popularized in the 1950s, possibly as a modern Islamic alternative to the Christian capitalistic chocolate-consuming celebration, although Egyptians also celebrate that one.

Dr. Horig Sorosian announced that all of the statues and pieces of statues, columns and other remains will be grouped with those found previously at the site and eventually be displayed in their original locations in the places in the Temple of Millions of Years for historians, Egyptologists and tourists to view.

And for sphinx fans to cheer: “We’re at #2! We’re at #2!”

Webb Has Arrived Successfully at L2

It’s really happening. The James Webb Space Telescope has successfully reached its orbital destination in space, 1.5 million km (1 million miles) from Earth. A final 5-minute thruster firing on January 24, 2022 put JWST in its halo orbit at the Sun-Earth Lagrange 2 (L2) point. The formal commissioning process can now begin.

“We’re excited to announce today that Webb is officially on station at its L2 orbit, capping off a remarkable 30 days,” said Webb’s commissioning manager Keith Parrish in a January 24 news conference. “It’s an incredible achievement by our team.”

Since it launched on December 25, Webb has been undergoing the nail-biting and complicated unfolding and deploying while cruising through space. Everything so far has gone perfectly.

“During the past month, JWST has achieved amazing success and is a tribute to all the folks who spent many years and even decades to ensure mission success,” said Bill Ochs, Webb project manager at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center, in a blog post. “We are now on the verge of aligning the mirrors, instrument activation and commissioning, and the start of wondrous and astonishing discoveries.”

Parrish reiterated how efficient the launch by the Ariane 5 rocket and the course correction maneuvers have been, potentially giving the JWST mission twice the lifetime as originally announced, as long as 20 years.

“We used a tiny amount of fuel in today’s maneuver,” he said, “We’re very, very happy with our estimated lifetime, and it’s going to extensively exceed our 10 year estimate. Everybody’s thrilled by it. It’s just a degree of how thrilled.” Parrish added that the team will review the data and put an exact number on that lifetime over the next few months.

Parrish said approximately once every 21 days, the telescope’s orbit around L2 will need to be tweaked by briefly firing JWST’s thrusters.

The telescope team will now begin the months-long process of calibrating its mirrors and turning on the science instruments.  

Lee Feinberg, JWST’s Optical Telescope Element Manager said the 3-month process of aligning the 18 mirror segments to act as one large 6.5 meter telescope will begin in about a week, after the primary near-infrared camera, NIRCam, is cold enough to turn on. That instrument will help align the mirrors.

“We’ll look at a bright, isolated star,” Feinberg said, “and we’ll get 18 different images — which will all be blurry because the individual mirror won’t be aligned. Then we can begin the slow process that we call phasing, which will align the mirrors to work as one.”

Feinberg said the mirrors will be aligned to within 1/5000^th the width of a human hair. He also revealed the identity of the star they will use: HD 84406, a G-type main sequence star that is a lot like our own Sun.

“It’s a Ursa Major near the bowl of the Big Dipper,” he said noting that the star is not visible to the naked eye, but it can be seen with binoculars.

While everything has gone well so far, there is still a lot of work to get the telescope ready for action.

“We’re a month in and the baby hasn’t even opened its eyes yet,” said Jane Rigby of NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. “Everything we’re doing is about getting the observatory ready to do transformative science. That’s why we’re here.”

Hidden UFO Found On Google Map, South Africa! UFO Sighting News.

I was exploring on Google Map when I came across a metallic disk landed in South Africa. It's hidden in a grove of trees and far from any city. The object looks like a classic disk with a pointed hump at its center. One photo even shows a huge circle around it...similar to that of a crop circle, but then disappears in the next photo months later. It looks like this is a landing location of an alien craft that attempted to hide its existence from the world. The pilot has created a dirt road to the area and is probably in a city nearby manipulating the direction the human race will go by introducing new technology, cures, ideas and such. This needs further investigation. We need someone on location. I'll ask around to see if it's possible to get more info on it.

Watch this amazing discovery by Youtuber Gina Hill. She caught two groups of brown UFOs exiting our sun. She used a NASA ISWA site where she found the evidence. As the sun begins to have a small solar explosion...suddenly in a single frame of the video are six small brown rectangles. Had this been a glitch in the program, it would be black or white, but brown? I have never seen this color on the photos. This is new, this is something important, this is alien ships exiting our sun! Now this back up my theory about the sun having a hollow space within it, where there could be the legendary planet X that we have all heard about. There may even be a mini solar system within it of several planets and moons. Brown objects exiting our sun in groups of six...that screams alien fleet.

UFO filmed over Edwards, California YESTERDAY

This strange sighting of a possible triangle-shaped UFO was filmed over Edwards Air Force Base in California on 24th January 2022.

Witness report: 

My wife was driving northbound on the 14 near Edwards AFB at 17:56 today 1/24/22. She recorded a strange 3 light craft in the sky and drove right underneath it. It was stationary or moved very slowly from the video and what she told me. She said the three bright lights on each corner were “kind of like iron man’s thrusters”, almost as if they are causing optical effects from heat generation. I work in aerospace so I can differentiate aircraft. I looked at her video and checked the flight radar for that timeframe and there were no aircraft above the highway.

An astronomer has captured footage of a huge asteroid 3,451 feet in diameter as it made its closest approach to Earth in almost 90 years.

Asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) could be seen as a small white dot as it travelled towards our planet at around 19:00 GMT on Monday (January 17). 

The following evening, at 21:51 GMT (16:51 EST) on January 18, the asteroid made its closest approach to Earth since 1933, coming within 1.2 million miles of our planet. 

The clip was captured by Gianluca Masi, an astrophysicist and manager of the Virtual Telescope Project, provided by the Bellatrix Astronomical Observatory in Italy. 

Another eight so-called near-Earth objects (NEOs) are set to pass safely by Earth this month, according to NASA.

ASTEROID 7482 (1994 PC1)

The space rock 7482 (1994 PC1) was first discovered in 1994.

It was spotted by RH McNaught using the Siding observatory in Australia.

It orbits the Sun every 572 days, although has an eccentric orbit taking it from 0.9 to 1.8 AU from the star. 

One AU is the distance between the Earth and the Sun. 

The last known approach this close was in 1933, when it was 699,000 miles from the Earth. 

'We captured several images of the potentially hazardous asteroid (7482) 1994 PC1 while safely approaching us,' said Masi. 

'We made a still picture and nice animation. The image above comes from a single, 60-second exposure, remotely taken with the "Elena" robotic unit available at Virtual Telescope. 

'The telescope tracked the fast apparent motion of the asteroid, this is why stars show as long trails, while the asteroid looks like a sharp dot of light in the centre of the image, marked by an arrow. 

'Using all the images of the sequence, we could make the animation below, showing 1994 PC1 in motion against the stars.' 

NASA puts the diameter of asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) as 3,451 feet (1.052km), much larger than the tallest building on Earth, the Burj Khalifa in Dubai, which measures 2,722 feet.  

Following its close approach on Tuesday, 7482 (1994 PC1) won't be this close to Earth again until the year 2105, according to NASA JPL-Caltech's Solar System Dynamics.

Its orbit is very well known, according to astronomers, and varies from 0.9 AU to 1.8 AU, where 1 AU is the distance between the Earth and the sun. 

It is a common stony S-type asteroid, and every close approach gives astronomers the chance to study the surface and learn more about these ancient space rocks. 

NASA and other agencies regularly track more than 28,000 known asteroids as they orbit the Sun, and occasionally cross Earth's orbit.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SPACE ROCKS

An asteroid is a large chunk of rock left over from collisions or the early Solar System. Most are located between Mars and Jupiter in the Main Belt.

A comet is a rock covered in ice, methane and other compounds. Their orbits take them much further out of the Solar System.

A meteor is what astronomers call a flash of light in the atmosphere when debris burns up.

This debris itself is known as a meteoroid. Most are so small they are vapourised in the atmosphere.

If any of this meteoroid makes it to Earth, it is called a meteorite.

Meteors, meteoroids and meteorites normally originate from asteroids and comets.

DEFLECTING AN ASTEROID WOULD REQUIRE 'MULTIPLE BUMPS', STUDY SAYS

Deflecting an asteroid such as Bennu, which has a small chance of hitting Earth in about a century and a half, could require multiple small impacts from some sort of massive human-made deflection device, according to experts.

Scientists in California have been firing projectiles at meteorites to simulate the best methods of altering the course of an asteroid so that it wouldn't hit Earth. 

According to the results so far, an asteroid like Bennu that is rich in carbon could need several small bumps to charge its course.

Bennu, which is about a third of a mile wide, has a slightly greater chance of hitting Earth than previously thought, NASA revealed.

The space agency upgraded the risk of Bennu impacting Earth at some point over the next 300 years to one in 1,750.

Bennu also has a one-in-2,700 chance of hitting Earth on the afternoon of September 24, 2182, according to the NASA study.  

Scientists have been seriously considering how to stop an asteroid from ever hitting Earth since the 1960s, but previous approaches have generally involved theories on how to blow the cosmic object into thousands of pieces.

The problem with this is these pieces could potentially zoom towards Earth and present almost as dangerous and humanity-threatening an issue as the original asteroid. 

A more recent approach, called kinetic impact deflection (KID), involves firing something into space that more gently bumps the asteroid off course, away from Earth, while keeping it intact. 

Recent KID efforts were outlined at the 84th annual meeting of the Meteoritical Society held in Chicago and led by Dr George Flynn, a physicist at State University of New York, Plattsburgh.  

'You might have to use multiple impacts,' Dr Flynn said in conversation with The New York Times. 'It [Bennu] may barely miss, but barely missing is enough.'

Researchers have been working at NASA's Ames Vertical Gun Range, built in the 1960s during the Apollo era and based at Moffett Federal Airfield in California's Silicon Valley, for the recent KID experiments.

They fired small, spherical aluminum projectiles at meteorites suspended by pieces of nylon string.

The team used 32 meteorites – which are fragments of asteroids that have fallen to Earth from space – that were mostly purchased from private dealers. 

The tests have allowed them to work out at what point momentum from a human-made object fired towards an asteroid turns it into thousands of fragments, rather than knocking it off course as desired. 

'If you break it into pieces, some of those pieces may still be on a collision course with Earth,' Dr Flynn said. 

Carbonaceous chondrite (C-type) asteroids, such as Bennu, are the most common in the solar system. 

They are darker than other asteroids due to the presence of carbon and are some of the most ancient objects in the solar system – dating back to its birth. 

According to the findings from experiments at AVGR, the type of asteroid being targeted (and how much carbon it has in it) may dictate how much momentum would be directed at it from any human-made KID device.   

From the experiments, the researchers found C-type meteorites could withstand only about one-sixth of the momentum that the other chondrites could withstand before shattering. 

'[C-type] asteroids are much more difficult to deflect without disruption than ordinary chondrite asteroids,' the experts concluded.  

'These results indicate multiple successive impacts may be required to deflect rather than disrupt asteroids, particularly carbonaceous asteroids.'

Therefore, around 160 years in the future – when Bennu is most likely to collide with Earth, according to NASA – a KID device would have to give it a series of gentle nudges to prevent it from breaking up and sending dangerous splinter fragments flying towards Earth.

NASA's recent study about Bennu, published in the journal Icarus, did point out there is more than a 99.9 per cent probability Bennu will not smash into Earth over the next three centuries. 

'Although the chances of it hitting Earth are very low, Bennu remains one of the two most hazardous known asteroids in our solar system, along with another asteroid called 1950 DA,' NASA said in a statement.     

NASA says none of the known asteroids are expected to collide with the Earth at any point in the near future, but there are asteroids whose orbits aren't known.  

Asteroids and other space objects are being monitored by NASA's Center for Near Earth Object Studies. 

It defines 7482 (1994 PC1) as a near-Earth object (NEO) and a potentially hazardous asteroid (PHA). 

NEOs are an asteroid or comet whose orbit brings it into or through a zone between approximately 91 million and 121 million miles (195 million km) from the Sun, meaning that it can pass within about 30 million miles (50 million km) of Earth’s orbit. 

If the object is larger than 460 feet (140 meters) across, it is considered a potentially hazardous object (PHO). 

'NEOs are comets and asteroids that have been nudged by the gravitational attraction of nearby planets into orbits that allow them to enter the Earth’s neighbourhood,' said NASA.

'Composed mostly of water ice with embedded dust particles, comets originally formed in the cold outer planetary system while most of the rocky asteroids formed in the warmer inner solar system between the orbits of Mars and Jupiter. 

'The scientific interest in comets and asteroids is due largely to their status as the relatively unchanged remnant debris from the solar system formation process some 4.6 billion years ago.' 

According to publicly available NASA data, there have been 27,948 NEOs discovered, as of Tuesday.

It is estimated that there are about 25,000 near-Earth objects (NEOs) larger than 460 feet (140 metres).

And there are also an estimated 1,000 NEOs larger than 3,280 feet (one kilometre), highlighting the need to keep track of these space rocks.

Between January 20 and January 28, eight more NEOs will pass by Earth, according to NASA data. 

One of these, Asteroid 2022 AB, could be up to 361 feet wide, which is not much in comparison to asteroid 7482 (1994 PC1) but still larger than Big Ben.

On average, Earth is hit by a football pitch-sized rock every 5,000 years, and a civilisation-ending asteroid every one million years, according to NASA's Near-Earth Object Program.      

In an attempt to tackle the threat of asteroids that may one day get a little too close for comfort, NASA formed a planetary defence program, that includes the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission, that launched in November.

Ancient Space Dust Analysis Could Solve Mystery of Origins of Earth’s Water

An international team of scientists may have solved a key mystery about the origins of Earth’s water, after uncovering persuasive new evidence pointing to an unlikely culprit—the Sun.

In a recent paper published in the journal Nature Astronomy, a team of researchers from the UK, Australia, and America describe how new analysis of an ancient asteroid suggests that extraterrestrial dust grains carried water to Earth as the planet formed.

The water in the grains was produced by space weathering, a process by which charged particles from the Sun known as solar wind altered the chemical composition of the grains to produce water molecules.

The finding could answer the longstanding question of just where the unusually water-rich Earth got the oceans which cover 70 percent of its surface – far more than any other rocky planet in our Solar System. It could also help future space missions find sources of water on airless worlds.

Planetary scientists have puzzled for decades over the source of Earth’s oceans. One theory suggests that one type of water-carrying space rock known as C-type asteroids could have brought water to the planet in the final stages of its formation 4.6 billion years ago.

To test that theory, scientists have previously analyzed the isotopic ‘fingerprint’ of chunks of C-type asteroids which have fallen to Earth as water-rich carbonaceous chondrite meteorites. If the ratio of hydrogen and deuterium in the meteorite water matched that of terrestrial water, scientists could conclude that C-type meteorites were the likely source.

The results weren’t quite that clear-cut. While some water-rich meteorites’ deuterium/hydrogen fingerprints did indeed match Earth’s water, many did not. On average, these meteorites’ liquid fingerprints didn’t line up with the water found in Earth’s mantle and oceans. Instead, Earth has a different, slightly lighter isotopic fingerprint.

In other words, while some of Earth’s water must have come from C-type meteorites, the forming Earth must have received water from at least one more isotopically-light source which originated somewhere else in the Solar System.

The University of Glasgow-led team used a cutting-edge analytical process called atom probe tomography to scrutinize samples from a different type of space rock known as an S-type asteroid, which orbit closer to the sun than C-types. The samples they analyzed came from an asteroid called Itokawa, which were collected by the Japanese space probe Hayabusa and returned to Earth in 2010.

Atom probe tomography enabled the team to measure the atomic structure of the grains one atom at a time and detect individual water molecules. Their findings demonstrate that a significant amount of water was produced just below the surface of dust-sized grains from Itokawa by space weathering.

The early solar system was a very dusty place, providing a great deal of opportunity water to be produced under the surface of spaceborne dust particles. This water-rich dust, the researchers suggest, would have rained down onto the early Earth alongside C-type asteroids as part of the delivery of Earth’s oceans.

Dr. Luke Daly, of the University of Glasgow’s School of Geographical and Earth Sciences, is the paper’s lead author. Dr. Daly said: “The solar winds are streams of mostly hydrogen and helium ions which flow constantly from the Sun out into space. When those hydrogen ions hit an airless surface like an asteroid or a spaceborne dust particle, they penetrate a few tens of nanometres below the surface, where they can affect the chemical composition of the rock. Over time, the ‘space weathering’ effect of the hydrogen ions can eject enough oxygen atoms from materials in the rock to create H2O – water – trapped within minerals on the asteroid.

“Crucially, this solar wind-derived water produced by the early solar system is isotopically light. That strongly suggests that fine-grained dust, buffeted by the solar wind and drawn into the forming Earth billions of years ago, could be the source of the missing reservoir of the planet’s water.”

Itokawa’s curious, varied terrain and lack of impact craters indicate it is a rubble pile asteroid.

Prof. Phil Bland, a John Curtin Distinguished Professor at the School of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Curtin University and co-author of the paper said “Atom probe tomography lets us take an incredibly detailed look inside the first 50 nanometres or so of the surface of dust grains on Itokawa, which orbits the sun in 18-month cycles. It allowed us to see that this fragment of space-weathered rim contained enough water that, if we scaled it up, would amount to about 20 liters for every cubic meter of rock.”

Co-author Prof. Michelle Thompson of the Department of Earth, Atmospheric, and Planetary Sciences at Purdue University added: “It’s the kind of measurement that simply would not have been possible without this remarkable technology. It gives us an extraordinary insight into how tiny dust particles floating in space might help us balance the books on the isotopic composition of the Earth’s water, and give us new clues to help solve the mystery of its origins.”

The researchers took great care to ensure that the results of their testing were accurate, undertaking additional experiments with other sources to verify their results.

Dr. Daly added: “The atom probe tomography system at Curtin University is world-class, but it had never really been used to for the sort of analysis of hydrogen we were undertaking here. We wanted to be sure that the results that we were seeing were accurate. I presented our preliminary results at the Lunar and Planetary Science conference in 2018, and asked if any colleagues in attendance would help us validate our findings with samples of their own. To our delight, colleagues at the NASA

">NASA Johnson Space Center and the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, Purdue, Virginia, and Northern Arizona Universities, Idaho and Sandia national laboratories all offered to help. They gave us samples of similar minerals irradiated with helium and deuterium instead of hydrogen, and from atom probe results of those materials it quickly became clear that what we were seeing in Itokawa was extraterrestrial in origin.

“The colleagues that offered their support on this research really amounts to a dream team for space weathering, so we’re very excited by the evidence that we’ve collected. It could open the door to a much better understanding of what the early Solar System looked like and how the Earth and its oceans were formed.”

Professor John Bradley, of the University of Hawai‘i at Manoa, Honolulu, a co-author of the paper, added: As recently as a decade ago, the notion that solar wind irradiation is relevant to the origin of water in the solar system, much less relevant to Earth’s oceans, would have been greeted with skepticism. By showing for the first time that water is produced in-situ on the surface of an asteroid, our study builds on the accumulating body of evidence that the interaction of the solar wind with oxygen-rich dust grains does indeed produce water.

“Since dust that was abundant throughout the solar nebula prior to the onset of planetesimal accretion was inevitably irradiated, water produced by this mechanism is directly relevant to the origin of water in planetary systems and possibly the isotopic composition of Earth’s oceans.”

Their estimates of just how much water might be contained in space-weathered surfaces also suggest a way future space explorers could manufacture supplies of water on even the most seemingly arid planets.

Co-author Professor Hope Ishii of the University of Hawai’i at Manoa said: “One of the problems of future human space exploration is how astronauts will find enough water to keep them alive and accomplish their tasks without carrying it with them on their journey.

“We think it’s reasonable to assume that the same space weathering process which created the water on Itokawa will have occurred to one degree or another on many airless worlds like the Moon or the asteroid Vesta. That could mean that space explorers may well be able to process fresh supplies of water straight from the dust on the planet’s surface. It’s exciting to think that the processes which formed the planets could help to support human life as we reach out beyond Earth.”

Dr. Daly added: “NASA’s Artemis project is setting out to establish a permanent base on the Moon. If the lunar surface has a similar water reservoir sourced by the solar wind this research uncovered on Itokawa, it would represent an enormous and valuable resource to aid in achieving that goal.”

The team’s paper, titled ‘Solar Wind Contribution’s to the Earth’s Oceans’, is published in Nature Astronomy.

Radian Aerospace comes out of stealth and raises $27.5M for orbital space plane development

More than five years after its founding, Renton, Wash.-based Radian Aerospace is emerging from stealth mode and reporting a $27.5 million seed funding round to support its plans to build an orbital space plane.

The round was led by Boston-based Fine Structure Ventures, with additional funding from EXOR, The Venture Collective, Helios Capital, SpaceFund, Gaingels, The Private Shares Fund, Explorer 1 Fund, Type One Ventures and other investors.

Radian has previously brought in pre-seed investments, but the newly announced funding should accelerate its progress.

One of the company’s investors and strategic advisers, former Lockheed Martin executive Doug Greenlaw, said Radian was going after the “Holy Grail” of space access with a fully reusable system that would provide for single-stage-to-orbit (SSTO) launches.

It’ll take much more than $27.5 million to grab the grail: In the late 1990s, NASA spent nearly a billion dollars on Lockheed Martin’s X-33 single-stage-to-orbit concept before the project was canceled in 2001. But Radian’s executives argue that technological advances have now brought the SSTO vision within reach.

“What we are doing is hard, but it’s no longer impossible thanks to significant advancements in materials science, miniaturization and manufacturing technologies,” Livingston Holder, Radian’s co-founder and chief technology officer, said today in a news release.

Holder was part of the U.S. Air Force’s Manned Spaceflight Engineer program in the 1980s — and went on to become a program manager at Boeing, focusing on reusable space systems. The design for Radian’s space plane was inspired by Boeing’s 1970s-era concept for a Reusable Aerodynamic Space Vehicle, or RASP.

For the past few years, Radian has been working on rocket engine development at its Renton headquarters and at a testing facility near Bremerton, Wash. Ars Technica reported that the liquid-fueled engine is designed to provide about 200,000 pounds of thrust, and that the space plane would be powered by three of the engines. The current design would support carrying up to five people and 5,000 pounds of cargo into orbit, Ars Technica reported.

Radian says its space plane, called Radian One, would make sled-assisted takeoffs and airplane-like runway landings, with a turnaround time of as little as 48 hours between missions.

The company hasn’t announced a timetable for development or operations, but its founders hope to have the plane available to service commercial space stations that could be in orbit by the 2030s. Radian says it already has launch service agreements with commercial space station ventures as well as in-space manufacturers, satellite operators and cargo companies, plus agreements with the U.S. government and “selected foreign governments.”

For what it’s worth, one of Radian’s early-stage investors is Dylan Taylor, chairman and CEO of Voyager Space Holdings. Voyager Space is one of the partners in a commercial space station project known as Starlab.

“On demand space operations is a growing economy, and I believe Radian’s technology can deliver on the right-sized, high-cadence operations that the market opportunity is showing,” Taylor said. “I am confident in the team working at Radian and look forward to cheering them along in this historical endeavor.”

Update for 12:15 p.m. PT Jan. 20: In an emailed response to GeekWire’s questions, Radian CEO Richard Humphrey confirmed that there are 18 full-time employees in Renton, and that the latest funding round brings total investment to $32 million.

“This funding will primarily be used to support our next series of risk-reducing milestones that include main engine testing, composite tank testing, design maturation, aero analysis and customer development,” he said.

Humphrey said Radian is “planning to undergo an upgrade” at the Bremerton engine testing facility and expects to resume increased testing by midyear.

He declined to be more specific about Radian’s partners or potential customers. “Nearly all of our agreements are subject to NDA [non-disclosure agreements] so we are not able to share the specific names or values,” he said. “Notable is that we have a number of mission sets that we are focused on that include habitation, Earth observation, in-space servicing, downmass, launch and delivery, and over a dozen companies have signed on across all those areas.”

Unknown objects at the heart of Milky Way are sending Earth signals

Researchers detected radio waves coming from objects at the center of the Milky Way, and then they mysteriously disappeared.

A team of researchers detected radio signals coming from the center of the Milky Way, and then they mysteriously disappeared.

The ASKAP radio telescope located in Australia performed a survey that included 2 million objects, and each of the objects was being classified by a computer and researchers. One object, in particular, wasn't able to be classified by the computer or researchers and became an immediate object of interest as, throughout 2020, the object emitted six radio signals over the course of nine months. The researchers hadn't seen anything like this before.

Scientists attempted to locate the object that was causing the radio signals in infrared, visible, and X-ray wavelengths but were unable to spot anything. Additionally, the object stopped emitting signals for months on end, and then researchers re-detected it around a year after it was first discovered. While the signals aren't officially classified as anything yet, researchers are using the placeholder name "galactic center radio transients" (GCRTs).

"Unfortunately, we don't quite know what behaves like that," said Murphy.

Notably, Tara Murphy, a professor at the University of Sydney who led Wang's research team, told Insider that she is "100% confident" the signals aren't coming from aliens as signals coming from technology would cover a much narrower range of frequencies.

If you believe in the ‘Zoo Theory’ or one of the other conjectures centered around the idea that extraterrestrials are watching Earth and its inhabitants – either for our protection or their entertainment – then you might agree with recent comments by Nick Pope, England’s most well-known UFO expert. Pope implies that ETs are no longer worried about our own well-being — especially with our propensity to build nuclear weapons and plants, but instead are worried about their own safety. And the human they seem to fear the most is … Vladimir Putin?

The Daily Star obtained quotes from Nick Pope, former UFO investigator at the British Government’s Ministry of Defence (MoD), about the chances of ETs revealing themselves in some greater and confirming way – rather than just teasing us with glimpses of UFOs and their crews – anytime soon. Pope points to the escalating tensions between Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukraine, the U.S.s, the U.K. and most of western Europe as the reason we shouldn’t hold our collective breaths.

“Highly evolved extraterrestrials probably regard warfare as something that only primitive civilizations engage in, so the Ukraine situation means we’re unlikely to get an invitation to join the Galactic Federation for the time being.”

Pope’s comments seem to imply the Galactic Federation – the alleged council of various alien species that rule over the cosmos – thinks Putin’s posturing will lead to war and that makes humans not worthy of further investigation or observation  … even as captives in a galactic zoo. Pope thinks the impetus for this ET evacuation is the UK’s commitment to join in the fight to resist Putin.

“Aliens might wonder at the wisdom of the UK going up against Russia, but would probably realize that being in a coalition helps. And if they knew their Earth history, they’d know never to write off the Brits.”

Spoken like a true Brit – even though Pope has lived in the U.S. since 2012. Does he really think these things: a) ETs observing us think the history British military tells them everything they need to know about humanity; b) the current situation in Ukraine is the best indicator of the warring instinct of humans; c) Vladimir Putin is the most powerful force on Earth?

“Russia is increasingly preparing its military strength in the midst of the threat of the outbreak of World War 3.”

That quote from Bulukumba News matches many other media sources who think the buildup on the Ukraine border is a big deal. Only Nick Pope seems to think it’s a big deal to ETs. Does he know something we don’t?

On the other hand, what if he’s right? The U.S. and other world governments seem to suddenly be spending a lot of time and money on UFO investigations. If Putin is chasing them away, couldn’t those expenses be used elsewhere – like for bringing about world peace? Then again, if humans are no longer warmongers, that means the ETs will see Earth as a safe place to … to what? Pope thinks they would invite us to join the ‘Galactic Federation’. Wouldn’t that be like inviting an ant colony to join the United Nations?

Coming or going?

All of this discussion seems to point to the real issue – humans aren’t too happy with how other humans are treating other humans … something which has nothing to do with UFOs and extraterrestrials and which we still have no idea how to deal with.

Sometimes it seems our problem is not the Fermi Paradox – it’s the Woe is Me Paradox.

A forensic reconstruction of the face of a female mummy who died about 2,600 years ago reveals a 'beautiful young lady' with deep brown eyes and slightly protruding upper teeth. 

Scientists have spent months creating the reconstruction of what they call the most famous Egyptian mummy in Switzerland known as Shep-en-Isis, or Schepenese, using CT scans and morphological data from her skeleton. 

Shep-en-Isis was found in 1819 at Deir el-Bahari, a famous complex of mortuary temples and tombs located on the west bank of the Nile River in Egypt, before being transported to Switzerland in 1820. 

The remains are currently kept in the São Galo Abbey Library, in the Swiss city of St Gallen.  

Inscriptions on her sarcophagus suggest she belonged to a wealthy upper-class family and would have had some degree of formal education during her existence in the 7th century BC. 

She was the daughter of a priest in the city of Thebes, according to experts, and lived in the late period, the early 26th Dynasty – the last heyday of Ancient Egypt – prior to her death by 610 BC. 

However, it's not possible to identify the name or profession of Shep-en-Isis's husband or whether or not she gave birth to children.

Scientists have spent months creating the reconstruction of what they call the most famous Egyptian mummy in Switzerland known as Shep-en-Isis, or Schepenese, using CT scans and morphological data from her skeleton. The mummy of the young woman arrived in Switzerland as early as 1820 and has been the star among mummies in Switzerland ever since

The reconstruction project was conducted by FAPAB Research Center in Sicily and Flinders University in Australia in collaboration with Cicero Moraes, a 3D designer from Brazil. 

Moraes has previously created a series of facial reconstructions of historical figures such as Mary Magdalene and Jesus Christ.  

It was commissioned by the Abbey Library of Saint Gall, which had owned the CT, (computerised tomography) scans of the mummy for years.  

'The harmonious and well-proportioned skull suggests that Schepenese was probably a beautiful lady during her lifetime,' the experts say. 

Mentioned in the first reports from 1820 after her discovery 'is the good and complete preservation of the teeth', the team say, which is one of her most notable physical features in the reconstruction. 

The team built up the living layers bit by bit, adding tissue, eyes and skin before fine details such as hair and tiny freckles around the nose to complement the effect.   

Shep-en-Isis was found in a 'family tomb' located within the mortuary temple of Pharaoh Hatshepsut in Deir el-Bahari temple, along with her father Pa-es-tjenfi, whose mummy is Berlin. 

'Based on Shep-en-Isis' anatomical age and the style of her inner coffin, she must have been born by around 650 BC and died between 620 and 610 BC,' Dr Michael Habicht from Flinders University told Aventuras na História.   

Due to her mummified ear, the shape of the ear could be reconstructed quite accurately, in contrast to pure skeletons where ears are reconstructed with a generic ear.

The final reconstruction in high resolution: Unlike many other facial reconstructions, jewellery, clothing and wigs were not used, as these are hypothetical assumptions

Certain details may also not have been recorded for Shep-en-Isis, for example, the team do not know the exact eye colour or the exact skin complexion. 

Due to her Egyptian ancestry, brown eyes and a somewhat more olive skin colour were assumed. 

 Unlike many other facial reconstructions, jewellery, clothing and wigs were not used, as these are hypothetical assumptions, according to the team.

'Our reconstruction focuses exclusively on the forensically reconstructed appearance and the anatomical evidence,' they say.  

The results of their efforts have been published in the form of a monograph entitled 'The Forensic Facial Reconstruction of Shep-en-Isis', listed on Amazon.    

AN ANCIENT CASE OF MISTAKEN IDENTITY? EGYPTIAN MUMMY IS REVEALED NOT TO BE THE NOBLEWOMAN NAMED ON THE 3,000-YEAR-OLD COFFIN 

In a potentially ancient case of mistaken identity, a 2021 found that an Egyptian mummy likely wasn't the person named on the front of its coffin. 

Australian scientists performed computerised tomography (CT) scans and radiocarbon dating on the mummy and coffin, currently housed at the University of Sydney. 

The mummified female body dates as far back as the year 1200 BC, while the coffin in which the mummy resides was constructed in the year 1000 BC, they found.

The body may have been inserted by a crafty Egyptian dealer into what was at the time an empty coffin at some point during the 19th century, just before it was bought for the university.  

Sir Charles Nicholson, an English explorer who spent much of his career in Australia during the 19th century, bought the mummified body, lidded coffin and mummy board as a set during a trip to Egypt in between 1856 and 1867.

In 1860, Sir Nicholson donated it to the University of Sydney and two years later returned to live in England.

Experts have revealed what a 2,600-year-old mummy looked like when she was alive. Named Shep-en-Isis (or Schepenese), she has been described as being a “beautiful young lady”.

Shep-en-Isis lived during the 7^th century BC in Egypt. Her skeleton was unearthed back in 1819 at an area near the Nile River where mortuary temples and tombs are located. In fact, her remains were discovered alongside her father’s in a mortuary temple named Pharaoh Hatshepsut (her father was a priest in the city of Thebes).

Based on inscriptions found on her sarcophagus, it is believed that she was part of a wealthy family and was educated. However, her husband’s name and what he did for a living is still unknown, in addition to whether or not she had any children. It is believed that she died in her 30s as Dr. Michael Habicht from Flinders University explained to Aventuras na História, “Based on Shep-en-Isis’ anatomical age and the style of her inner coffin, she must have been born by around 650 BC and died between 620 and 610 BC.”

In 1820, Shep-en-Isis’ skeleton was brought to Switzerland and is currently held in the São Galo Abbey Library in St. Gallen. People have described her as being the most famous Egyptian mummy in Switzerland.

For numerous months, scientists worked on reconstructing the facial features of the female mummy (the project included experts from the FAPAB Research Center in Sicily, Flinders University in Australia, and a 3D designer from Brazil named Cicero Moraes). They did the recreation by using CT scans as well as morphological data based on the mummy’s remains.

They reconstructed the tissue, skin, and eyes prior to adding more details like a few small freckles around her nose. They were able to reconstruct the shape of her ear as it was very well preserved. Her slightly protruding teeth were incredibly well preserved as well. On the other hand, experts had to assume that she had brown eyes and olive skin based on her Egyptian ancestry. Additionally, wigs, clothes, and jewelry were not added as they may not have been properly assumed.

The experts described their facial recreation project by stating, “Our reconstruction focuses exclusively on the forensically reconstructed appearance and the anatomical evidence,” adding, “The harmonious and well-proportioned skull suggests that Schepenese was probably a beautiful lady during her lifetime.” Their results have been published in a monograph called “The Forensic Facial Reconstruction of Shep-en-Isis”.

UFOs have captured the popular imagination for the past seven decades. For most of this time, the subject has been treated with casual derision by mainstream media—as the butt of a lighthearted story at the end of the nightly news, underscored by X-Files music and obligatory references to “little green men.”

The media’s dismissive attitude towards UFOs stands in stark contrast to the views of numerous, highly-respected individuals in the spheres of politics and science who have, over the years, stated either publicly or confidentially their firm belief that the UFO enigma is not only worthy of serious study, but that it may even be representative of non-human intelligences.

Here are 10 of the most shocking statements about UFOs by scientists and government officials…

General Nathan Twining.

10. General Nathan Twining

General Nathan Twining served as Chief of Staff of the United States Air Force between 1953 and 1957, and as Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff between 1957 and 1960. A highly distinguished officer, Twining rose through the ranks from a lowly private to a four-star general answering directly to the Secretary of Defense and the President himself.

In a once secret letter to Air Force Headquarters dated 23 September 1947, General Twining, then head of Air Materiel Command, stated that flying saucers were “real and not visionary or fictitious,” that they had “metallic or light reflecting surface[s],” that they were “circular or elliptical in shape, flat on bottom and domed on top,” and were sometimes sighted in “well-kept formation flights varying from three to nine objects.”

Twining’s unambiguous comments in this then-secret letter about the physical reality of flying saucers were in direct contradiction to the USAF’s public position at the time that UFO reports were the product of mass hysteria or misidentifications of mundane phenomena.

9. Wilbert B. Smith

Between 1947 and 1969, the US Air Force operated UFO investigation projects under three different codenames: Sign, Grudge, and Blue Book. Less well known is that America’s Northern neighbour was also taking a keen interest in flying saucers during the Cold War. Between 1950 and 1954, the Canadian government officially operated its own UFO study project—Project Magnet—with the objective of collecting data about the phenomenon and applying it in the spheres of military engineering and technology. The project was headed by Wilbert Brockhouse Smith, a senior radio engineer for Transport Canada’s Broadcast and Measurements Section.

In a previously top secret Canadian government document dated 21 November, 1950, drawing from information he had obtained via the Canadian embassy in Washington D.C., Smith noted of UFOs that: “The matter is the most highly classified subject in the United States government, rating higher even than the H-bomb.”

Professor Hermann Oberth.

8. Hermann Oberth

One of the boldest perspectives on UFOs during the 1950s came from Professor Hermann Oberth. A pioneer of rocketry and astronautics, and mentor to Werhner von Braun, Oberth was arguably one of the most influential engineers of the 20th Century. In an article for the American Weekly on 24 October, 1954, Oberth wrote:

“It is my thesis that flying saucers are real and that they are space ships from another solar system. I think that they possibly are manned by intelligent observers who are members of a race that may have been investigating our earth for centuries. I think that they have been sent out to conduct systematic, long-range investigations, first of men, animals and vegetation, and more recently of atomic centers, armaments and centers of armament production. They obviously have not come as invaders, but I believe their present mission may be one of scientific investigation.”

Roscoe Hillenkoetter.

7. Roscoe Hillenkoetter

Roscoe H. Hillenkoetter became America’s first CIA Director in 1947 and, before that, was head of the Central Intelligence Group (CIG). He had previously been wounded during the attack on Pearl Harbor and commanded the USS Missouri in 1946. He retired from military service with the rank of Vice Admiral. In 1960, in a letter to Congress, Hillenkoetter famously wrote:

“Behind the scenes, high-ranking Air Force officers are soberly concerned about the UFOs. But through official secrecy and ridicule, many citizens are led to believe the unknown flying objects are nonsense. To hide the facts, the Air Force has silenced its personnel.”

Curiously, during his retirement years, Hillenkoetter joined the board of directors for the National Investigations Committee on Aerial Phenomena (NICAP)—America’s leading civilian UFO investigations group. In their ground-breaking book, Clear Intent, authors Lawrence Fawcett and Barry Greenwood describe Hillenkoetter’s high-level involvement with NICAP as being a key move in the CIA’s successful infiltration and dismantling of NICAP. More men with CIA ties would join NICAP in the years to follow, and these individuals came to control the organization from within during the 1960s and 1970s as its founder, Donald Keyhoe, was pushing ever harder for government disclosure of UFO reality. Eventually, Keyhoe was ousted as NICAP Director by Joseph Bryan, former chief of the CIA’s psychological warfare staff. By 1980, NICAP was defunct.

Senator Barry Goldwater.

6. Barry Goldwater

Barry Goldwater was best known as the five-term Senator from Arizona and as the Republican Party nominee for President of the United States in 1964. Goldwater was a significant force in American politics across four decades. In an official United States Senate letter dated 28 March, 1975, in response to an enquiry regarding his publicly stated interest in UFOs, Goldwater wrote:

“About ten or twelve years ago I made an effort to find out what was in the building at Wright Patterson Air Force Base where the [UFO] information is stored that has been collected by the Air Force, and I was understandably denied this request. It is still classified above Top Secret.”

In another Senate letter, dated 19 Oct. 1981, Goldwater further stated: “I have had one long string of denials from chief after chief, so I have given up… this thing [the UFO issue] has gotten so highly classified… it is just impossible to get anything on it.”

Victor Marchetti.

5. Victor Marchetti

Victor Marchetti served in the CIA from 1955 to 1969. Towards the end of his CIA career, Marchetti worked for several months as special assistant to CIA Deputy Director Rufus Taylor. Marchetti was also involved in establishing the Top Secret Pine Gap satellite ground station near Alice Springs in Central Australia—long rumoured by UFO conspiracy theorists to be Australia’s Area 51.

In an article for Second Look magazine in May, 1979, Marchetti raised eyebrows with the following statement:

“I do know that the CIA and the US government have been concerned over the UFO phenomenon for many years and that their attempts, both past and recent, to discount the significance of the phenomenon and to explain away the apparent lack of official interest in it have all the earmarks of a classic intelligence cover-up… My theory is that we have, indeed, been contacted – perhaps even visited – by extraterrestrial beings, and that the US government, in collusion with other national powers of the Earth, is determined to keep this information from the general public.”

Col. Gordon Cooper.

4. Gordon Cooper

The late, great astronaut Colonel Gordon Cooper was legendary for his role in the first human space flight program, Project Mercury, and his exploits were chronicled in the classic 1983 movie The Right Stuff (which co-starred Dennis Quaid as Cooper). Cooper had a number of UFO sightings during his military career and maintained until his death in 2004 that the US government had long been engaged in a large-scale UFO cover-up.

In a letter to Ambassador Griffith, Mission of Grenada to the United Nations in New York, dated 9 September, 1978, Cooper wrote:

“For many years I have lived with a secret, in a secrecy imposed on all specialists and astronauts. I can now reveal that every day, in the USA, our radar instruments capture objects of form and composition unknown to us… I feel that we need to have a top-level, coordinated program to scientifically collect and analyze data from all over the Earth concerning any type of encounter, and to determine how best to interface with these visitors in a friendly fashion.”

Lord Hill Norton.

3. Lord Hill Norton

One of the most high-ranking military officials (retired) ever to speak out on the UFO issue was the late five-star Admiral of the Fleet the Lord Hill Norton, who served as Britain’s Chief of Defence Staff and as Chairman of the NATO Military Committee. Lord Hill Norton maintained a longstanding interest in UFOs during his later years. In his foreword for Timothy Good’s bestselling expose of government UFO secrecy, Beyond Top Secret (1996), Lord Hill Norton wrote:

“The [UFO] evidence is now so consistent and so overwhelming that no reasonably intelligent person can deny that something unexplained is going on in our atmosphere… there is a cover-up: in the United States on a massive scale, in Great Britain, and in several other countries.”

Fife Symington.

2. Fife Symington

One of the most famous mass UFO sightings of the past 30 years has to be the Phoenix Lights incident, in which thousands of individuals reported seeing a series of stationary lights over the Arizonian capital on the night of March 13, 1997. A delta or triangular-shaped craft of immense proportions was also widely reported as travelling low and slow over Arizona more broadly on the same night. The US air force was quick to attribute the sightings to misidentifications of military flares, and the then-governor of Arizona, Fife Symington, joined the debunking bandwagon when he staged a comedic press conference in response to the concerns of his constituents, going so far as to parade a man in front of the cameras dressed a ridiculous rubber alien costume.

Unknown at that time, however, was that the Governor himself had been among the witnesses to the Phoenix Lights. 10 years later, speaking at the National Press Club in Washington D.C. in November of 2007, Fife Symington stated in front of the world’s media:

“In 1997, during my second term as governor of Arizona, I saw something that defied logic and challenged my reality… I witnessed a massive delta-shaped craft silently navigate over Squaw Peak, a mountain range in Phoenix, Arizona. It was truly breathtaking. I was absolutely stunned… As a pilot and a former Air Force Officer, I can definitively say that this craft did not resemble any man-made object I’d ever seen. The incident was witnessed by hundreds—if not thousands—of people in Arizona, and my office was besieged with phone calls from very concerned Arizonians. There are many high-ranking military, aviation and government officials who share my concerns… We want the government to stop putting out stories that perpetuate the myth that all UFOs can be explained away in down-to-earth conventional terms. Investigations need to be re-opened, documents need to be unsealed and the idea of an open dialogue can no longer be shunned. Incidents like these are not going away. When it comes to events of this nature that are still completely unsolved, we deserve more openness in government, especially our own.”

In December 2017, the New York Times broke a dramatic story: the American government had been operating a secret UFO study program between 2008 and 2012 called the Advanced Aviation Threat Identification Program (AATIP). The conclusions of the $22 million Pentagon project, which, according to the Times, continues quietly to this day, were that “aircraft” of apparently unearthly origin are routinely penetrating America’s airspace.

The man who headed the Pentagon UFO project, Luis Elizondo, told journalists that these “aircraft” or “UAPs (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena),” were performing manoeuvres that fly in the face of our known laws of physics. Even more shockingly, Elizondo revealed that the Pentagon has been recovering bizarre metal alloys from alleged UFO crashes which currently are being studied and stored by billionaire defense contractor Robert Bigelow.

Discussing the Pentagon UFO project live on air in December 2017, Elizondo told CNN:

“We have identified some very, very interesting anomalous types of aircraft… let’s call them ‘aircraft.’ Things that don’t have any obvious flight surfaces, any obvious forms of propulsion, and [that have] extreme manoeuvrability beyond the healthy G-forces of a human or anything biological; hypersonic velocities; low observability; [and] positive lift, seemingly defying the laws of aerodynamics.”

When encouraged by the news anchor to speculate as to the nature and origin of these mystery aircraft, Elizondo replied: “We’ve deliberately stayed away from going down the rabbit hole of ‘who’s behind the wheel and what are their intentions’… what we wanted to do was to let the data speak for itself.”

The anchor responded by nudging Elizondo again: “Let me ask you point blank the question: do you believe that life from somewhere else, while you ran this program, came here, visited, observed?” Elizondo stunningly replied: “There is very compelling evidence that we may not be alone.”
