Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

Mysterious Supermassive Black Hole is Creating Stars Across Four Galaxies
The Hubble Space Telescope gets all of the media hype for its dazzling images, but when it comes to black holes – which don’t photograph too well – you can’t beat theChandra X-Ray Observatory. In orbit since 1999, this space telescope has far exceeded its planned five-year lifespan and continues to dazzle astronomers with its new discoveries about black holes. Its latest find is a supermassive black hole which, instead of gobbling up stars, planets and space debris, is spewing out thousands of baby stars and spreading them across four galaxies. How does this happen and are we in any danger of being hit?
“This is the first time we’ve seen a single black hole boost star birth in more than one galaxy at a time. It’s amazing to think one galaxy’s black hole can have a say in what happens in other galaxies millions of trillions of miles away.”
Roberto Gilli of the National Institute of Astrophysics (INAF) in Bologna, Italy, describes the discovery in a press release announcing the publication of the results in the journal “Astronomy and Astrophysics.” The supermassive black hole was found by following a jet of high-energy particles about one million light years in length to a galaxy 9.9 billion light years from Earth, which is surrounded by seven other nearby galaxies. The black hole end of the jet showed an x-ray cloud or bubble of hot gas. That appears to be the birth canal of the stars.

“As the hot bubble expanded and swept through four neighboring galaxies, it could have created a shock wave that compressed cool gas in the galaxies, causing stars to form. All four galaxies are approximately the same distance, about 400,000 light years, from the center of the bubble. The authors estimate that the star formation rate is between about two to five times higher than typical galaxies with similar masses and distance from Earth.”
The study refers to this process as “positive feedback” – a black hole creating stars rather than stopping their production or consuming them, which would obviously be “negative feedback.” The attitude of the feedback is determined by a “delicate balance between the heating rate and cooling rate of a cloud” in a nearby galaxy. When clouds in nearby galaxies are hit by the shock of the hot bubble spit out by the supermassive black hole, cooler ones are found to form more stars.

Co-author Alessandro Peca and the rest of the astronomers are looking forward to using this new discovery to find more black holes that are “positive” and “nurturing” parents of stars across multiple galaxies and huge distances.

WETENSCHAP & PLANEET Wetenschappers hebben voor het eerst bewijs gevonden voor een reuzenplaneet bij een witte dwergster. De planeet cirkelt op kleine afstand om de hete witte dwerg, het restant van een Zonachtige ster. Hierbij wordt zijn atmosfeer ‘afgepeld’ en vormt zich een schijf van gas rond de ster. Dit unieke stelsel geeft een indruk van hoe ons eigen zonnestelsel er in de verre toekomst uit zou kunnen zien, zo heeft de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht ESO vandaag bekendgemaakt.
“Het was eigenlijk een toevallige ontdekking”, zegt Boris Gänsicke, van de Universiteit van Warwick, die leiding gaf aan een in het vakblad Nature gepubliceerde onderzoek. Zijn team heeft ongeveer zevenduizend witte dwergen geïnspecteerd die zijn waargenomen met de Sloan Digital Sky Survey en ontdekte daarbij een buitenbeentje.
Door subtiele variaties in het licht van de ster te analyseren, ontdekten de onderzoekers sporen van chemische elementen die ze nog nooit eerder bij een witte dwerg hadden waargenomen. “We wisten dat er iets bijzonders aan de hand moest zijn met dit systeem, en speculeerden erop dat er sprake kon zijn van een planetair overblijfsel.” Om meer inzicht te krijgen in de eigenschappen van deze op ongeveer 1.500 lichtjaar van ons verwijderde en ongewone ster - met de welluidende naam WDJ0914+1914 - analyseerde het team het hemellichaam met een instrument van de gigantische VLT-telescoop van ESO in Chili.
Deze vervolgwarnemingen bevestigden dat er in de omgeving van de witte dwerg waterstof, zuurstof en zwavel aanwezig was. Door de vastgelegde spectra nauwkeurig te bestuderen, ontdekte het team dat deze elementen deel uitmaken van een kolkende schijf van gas die naar de witte dwerg toe stroomt en niet afkomstig is van de ster zelf.
“Het kostte een paar weken van heel hard piekeren voordat we doorhadden dat de verdamping van een reuzenplaneet de enige manier is waarop je zo’n schijf kunt maken”, citeert de ESO Matthias Schreiber van de Universiteit van Valparaiso (Chili), die de vroegere en toekomstige evolutie van dit stelsel heeft berekend.
De waargenomen hoeveelheden waterstof, zuurstof en zwavel komen overeen met degene in de diepe atmosfeerlagen van ijzige reuzenplaneten zoals Neptunus en Uranus. Als zo’n planeet op geringe afstand om een hete witte dwerg zou cirkelen, zou de extreem ultraviolette straling van de ster hem van zijn buitenste lagen ontdoen, waarna een deel van het ontsnapte gas naar de witte dwerg toe spiraalt. Dit is wat de wetenschappers denken dat ze rond WDJ0914+1914 waarnemen: de eerste verdampende planeet rond een witte dwerg.
De ontdekking werpt ook nieuw licht op het uiteindelijke lot van planetenstelsels
Tot nu toe hadden wetenschappers nog nooit aanwijzingen gevonden voor een reuzenplaneet die zich bij een witte dwerg heeft weten te handhaven. In dit geval op een afstand van slechts tien miljoen kilometer.
“Dit is voor het eerst dat we de hoeveelheden van gassen zoals zuurstof en zwavel in de schijf kunnen meten, en dat levert aanwijzingen op over samenstelling van de atmosferen van exoplaneten”, zegt Odette Toloza van de Universiteit van Warwick, die een model ontwikkelde voor de gasschijf rond de witte dwerg. “De ontdekking werpt ook nieuw licht op het uiteindelijke lot van planetenstelsels”, voegt Gänsicke daaraan toe.

Billy Meier is a Swiss national who in the 1970s claimed he had been in contact with aliens from the Pleiades star cluster - and had photographs to prove it.
Published in a 1979 book by former United States Air Force pilot Wendelle C Stevens, they later appeared in publicity material for US science-fiction programme The X-Files.
Now, they are up for auction at Sotheby's in the US, as part of a sale dedicated to space photography.
Eduard Albert "Billy" Meier claims he was first contacted by alien figures at the age of five, in 1942, and maintained regular contact throughout his life.
This series of images were taken in Switzerland in the spring of 1976.
This photo was used as the background of the "I want to believe" UFO poster that featured prominently in the office of FBI special agent Fox Mulder, played by David Duchovny, in The X-Files.
Inexpertly taken and faded, the images show blurry metallic blobs hovering or floating above the mountainous Swiss countryside.
Though Stevens said the images had not been doctored, other ufologists are highly sceptical about the images.

De Zwitser Billy Meier claimde in de jaren zeventig in contact te staan met aliens uit de sterrenhoop Plejaden en dat hij foto’s had om dat te bewijzen.
De foto’s werden in 1979 gepubliceerd in een boek geschreven door voormalig luchtmachtpiloot Wendelle C. Stevens en later gebruikt bij de promotie van de serie The X-Files.
Nu worden ze geveild, schrijft de BBC.
Eduard Albert ‘Billy’ Meier beweert dat hij op vijfjarige leeftijd, in 1942, voor het eerst werd benaderd door buitenaardse wezens.

Stevens zei dat er niet is geknoeid met de foto’s.
In 2017 werd het UFO-bewijs van Meier geanalyseerd door voormalig onderzoeker Joe Tysk van het Air Force Office of Special Investigations (AFOSI).
Hij kwam tot de conclusie dat de beelden authentiek zijn.

Anderen zijn sceptisch over de foto’s.
Documentatie over het contact van Billy Meier is onlangs overhandigd aan Harvard-professor Avi Loeb, die recentelijk suggereerde dat de interstellaire bezoeker Oumuamua een buitenaardse ruimtesonde is.
Climate scientists are speaking out against grossly exaggerated claims about global warming.

Environmental journalists and advocates have in recent weeks made a number of apocalyptic predictions about the impact of climate change. Bill McKibben suggested climate-driven fires in Australia had made koalas “functionally extinct.” Extinction Rebellion said “Billions will die” and “Life on Earth is dying.” Viceclaimed the “collapse of civilization may have already begun.”
Few have underscored the threat more than student climate activist Greta Thunberg and Green New Deal sponsor Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez. The latter said, “The world is going to end in 12 years if we don't address climate change.” Says Thunberg in her new book, “Around 2030 we will be in a position to set off an irreversible chain reaction beyond human control that will lead to the end of our civilization as we know it.”
Sometimes, scientists themselves make apocalyptic claims. “It’s difficult to see how we could accommodate a billion people or even half of that,” if Earth warms four degrees, said one earlier this year. “The potential for multi-breadbasket failure is increasing,” said another. If sea levels rise as much as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change predicts, another scientist said, “It will be an unmanageable problem.”
Apocalyptic statements like these have real-world impacts. In September, a group of British psychologists said children are increasingly suffering from anxiety from the frightening discourse around climate change. In October, an activist with Extinction Rebellion (”XR”) — an environmental group founded in 2018 to commit civil disobedience to draw awareness to the threat its founders and supporters say climate change poses to human existence — and a videographer, were kicked and beaten in a London Tube station by angry commuters. And last week, an XR co-founder said a genocide like the Holocaust was “happening again, on a far greater scale, and in plain sight” from climate change.
Climate change is an issue I care passionately about and have dedicated a significant portion of my life to addressing. I have been politically active on the issue for over 20 years and have researched and written about it for 17 years. Over the last four years, my organization, Environmental Progress, has worked with some of the world’s leading climate scientists to prevent carbon emissions from rising. So far, we’ve helped prevent emissions increasing the equivalent of adding 24 million cars to the road.
I also care about getting the facts and science right and have in recent months corrected inaccurate and apocalyptic news media coverage of fires in the Amazon and fires in California, both of which have been improperly presented as resulting primarily from climate change.
Journalists and activists alike have an obligation to describe environmental problems honestly and accurately, even if they fear doing so will reduce their news value or salience with the public. There is good evidence that the catastrophist framing of climate change is self-defeating because it alienates and polarizes many people. And exaggerating climate change risks distracting us from other important issues including ones we might have more near-term control over.
I feel the need to say this up-front because I want the issues I’m about to raise to be taken seriously and not dismissed by those who label as “climate deniers” or “climate delayers” anyone who pushes back against exaggeration.
With that out of the way, let’s look whether the science supports what’s being said.
First, no credible scientific body has ever said climate change threatens the collapse of civilization much less the extinction of the human species. “‘Our children are going to die in the next 10 to 20 years.’ What’s the scientific basis for these claims?” BBC’s Andrew Neil asked a visibly uncomfortable XR spokesperson last month.
“These claims have been disputed, admittedly,” she said. “There are some scientists who are agreeing and some who are saying it’s not true. But the overall issue is that these deaths are going to happen.”
“But most scientists don’t agree with this,” said Neil. “I looked through IPCC reports and see no reference to billions of people going to die, or children in 20 years. How would they die?”
“Mass migration around the world already taking place due to prolonged drought in countries, particularly in South Asia. There are wildfires in Indonesia, the Amazon rainforest, Siberia, the Arctic,” she said.
But in saying so, the XR spokesperson had grossly misrepresented the science. “There is robust evidence of disasters displacing people worldwide,” notes IPCC, “but limited evidence that climate change or sea-level rise is the direct cause”
What about “mass migration”? “The majority of resultant population movements tend to occur within the borders of affected countries," says IPCC.
It’s not like climate doesn’t matter. It’s that climate change is outweighed by other factors. Earlier this year, researchers found that climate “has affected organized armed conflict within countries. However, other drivers, such as low socioeconomic development and low capabilities of the state, are judged to be substantially more influential.”
Last January, after climate scientists criticized Rep. Ocasio-Cortez for saying the world would end in 12 years, her spokesperson said "We can quibble about the phraseology, whether it's existential or cataclysmic.” He added, “We're seeing lots of [climate change-related] problems that are already impacting lives."
That last part may be true, but it’s also true that economic development has made us less vulnerable, which is why there was a 99.7% decline in the death toll from natural disasters since its peak in 1931.
In 1931, 3.7 million people died from natural disasters. In 2018, just 11,000 did. And that decline occurred over a period when the global population quadrupled.
What about sea level rise? IPCC estimates sea level could rise two feet (0.6 meters) by 2100. Does that sound apocalyptic or even “unmanageable”?
Consider that one-third of the Netherlands is below sea level, and some areas areseven meters below sea level. You might object that Netherlands is rich while Bangladesh is poor. But the Netherlands adapted to living below sea level 400 years ago. Technology has improved a bit since then.
What about claims of crop failure, famine, and mass death? That’s science fiction, not science. Humans today produce enough food for 10 billion people, or 25% more than we need, and scientific bodies predict increases in that share, not declines.
The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) forecasts crop yields increasing 30% by 2050. And the poorest parts of the world, like sub-Saharan Africa, are expected to see increases of 80 to 90%.
Nobody is suggesting climate change won’t negatively impact crop yields. It could. But such declines should be put in perspective. Wheat yields increased 100 to 300% around the world since the 1960s, while a study of 30 models found that yields would decline by 6% for every one degree Celsius increase in temperature.
Rates of future yield growth depend far more on whether poor nations get access to tractors, irrigation, and fertilizer than on climate change, says FAO.
All of this helps explain why IPCC anticipates climate change will have a modest impact on economic growth. By 2100, IPCC projects the global economy will be 300 to 500% larger than it is today. Both IPCC and the Nobel-winning Yale economist, William Nordhaus, predict that warming of 2.5°C and 4°C would reduce gross domestic product (GDP) by 2% and 5% over that same period.
Does this mean we shouldn’t worry about climate change? Not at all.
One of the reasons I work on climate change is because I worry about the impact it could have on endangered species. Climate change may threaten one million species globally and half of all mammals, reptiles, and amphibians in diverse places like the Albertine Rift in central Africa, home to the endangered mountain gorilla.
But it’s not the case that “we’re putting our own survival in danger” through extinctions, as Elizabeth Kolbert claimed in her book, Sixth Extinction. As tragic as animal extinctions are, they do not threaten human civilization. If we want to save endangered species, we need to do so because we care about wildlife for spiritual, ethical, or aesthetic reasons, not survival ones.
And exaggerating the risk, and suggesting climate change is more important than things like habitat destruction, are counterproductive.
For example, Australia’s fires are not driving koalas extinct, as Bill McKibben suggested. The main scientific body that tracks the species, the International Union for the Conservation of Nature, or IUCN, labels the koala “vulnerable,” which is one level less threatened than “endangered,” two levels less than “critically endangered,” and three less than “extinct” in the wild.
Should we worry about koalas? Absolutely! They are amazing animals and their numbers have declined to around 300,000. But they face far bigger threats such as the destruction of habitat, disease, bushfires, and invasive species.
Think of it this way. The climate could change dramatically — and we could still save koalas. Conversely, the climate could change only modestly — and koalas could still go extinct.
The monomaniacal focus on climate distracts our attention from other threats to koalas and opportunities for protecting them, like protecting and expanding their habitat.
As for fire, one of Australia’s leading scientists on the issue says, “Bushfire losses can be explained by the increasing exposure of dwellings to fire-prone bushlands. No other influences need be invoked. So even if climate change had played some small role in modulating recent bushfires, and we cannot rule this out, any such effects on risk to property are clearly swamped by the changes in exposure.”
Nor are the fires solely due to drought, which is common in Australia, and exceptional this year. “Climate change is playing its role here,” said Richard Thornton of the Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre in Australia, “but it's not the cause of these fires."
The same is true for fires in the United States. In 2017, scientists modeled 37 different regions and found “humans may not only influence fire regimes but their presence can actually override, or swamp out, the effects of climate.” Of the 10 variables that influence fire, “none were as significant… as the anthropogenic variables,” such as building homes near, and managing fires and wood fuel growth within, forests.
Climate scientists are starting to push back against exaggerations by activists, journalists, and other scientists.
“While many species are threatened with extinction,” said Stanford’s Ken Caldeira, “climate change does not threaten human extinction... I would not like to see us motivating people to do the right thing by making them believe something that is false.”
I asked the Australian climate scientist Tom Wigley what he thought of the claim that climate change threatens civilization. “It really does bother me because it’s wrong,” he said. “All these young people have been misinformed. And partly it’s Greta Thunberg’s fault. Not deliberately. But she’s wrong.”
But don’t scientists and activists need to exaggerate in order to get the public’s attention?
“I’m reminded of what [late Stanford University climate scientist] Steve Schneider used to say,” Wigley replied. “He used to say that as a scientist, we shouldn’t really be concerned about the way we slant things in communicating with people out on the street who might need a little push in a certain direction to realize that this is a serious problem. Steve didn’t have any qualms about speaking in that biased way. I don’t quite agree with that.”
Wigley started working on climate science full-time in 1975 and created one of the first climate models (MAGICC) in 1987. It remains one of the main climate models in use today.
“When I talk to the general public,” he said, “I point out some of the things that might make projections of warming less and the things that might make them more. I always try to present both sides.”
Part of what bothers me about the apocalyptic rhetoric by climate activists is that it is often accompanied by demands that poor nations be denied the cheap sources of energy they need to develop. I have found that many scientists share my concerns.
“If you want to minimize carbon dioxide in the atmosphere in 2070 you might want to accelerate the burning of coal in India today,” MIT climate scientist Kerry Emanuel said.
“It doesn’t sound like it makes sense. Coal is terrible for carbon. But it’s by burning a lot of coal that they make themselves wealthier, and by making themselves wealthier they have fewer children, and you don’t have as many people burning carbon, you might be better off in 2070.”
Emanuel and Wigley say the extreme rhetoric is making political agreement on climate change harder.
“You’ve got to come up with some kind of middle ground where you do reasonable things to mitigate the risk and try at the same time to lift people out of poverty and make them more resilient,” said Emanuel. “We shouldn’t be forced to choose between lifting people out of poverty and doing something for the climate.”
Happily, there is a plenty of middle ground between climate apocalypse and climate denial.

Journalisten en activisten hebben in de afgelopen weken weer een aantal apocalyptische voorspellingen gedaan over de impact van klimaatverandering.
De Amerikaanse journalist Bill McKibben stelde bijvoorbeeld dat koala’s als gevolg van bosbranden in Australië door klimaatverandering ‘nagenoeg uitgestorven’ zijn.
Extinction Rebellion zei dat ‘miljarden zullen sterven’ en dat ‘leven op aarde uitsterft’.
Kettingreactie
Vice claimde dat ‘de ineenstorting van de beschaving mogelijk al begonnen is’.
Het Amerikaanse congreslid Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez zei dat ‘de wereld over 12 jaar zal vergaan als we niets doen tegen klimaatverandering’.
Klimaatactiviste Greta Thunberg voorspelt in haar nieuwe boek dat we ‘rond 2030 een kettingreactie in gang zetten die zal leiden tot het einde van de beschaving zoals we die kennen’.
Soms doen ook wetenschappers een duit in het zakje.

Onjuiste beweringen
De Amerikaanse beleidsschrijver Michael Shellenberger schrijft in Forbes dat er in de nieuwsmedia de afgelopen maanden veel onjuiste beweringen zijn gedaan.
Hij noemt onder meer de bosbranden in de Amazone en Californië als voorbeelden.
Shellenberger merkt op dat geen enkel wetenschappelijk instituut ooit heeft gezegd dat klimaatverandering zal leiden tot de ineenstorting van de beschaving of het uitsterven van de mensheid.
Congreslid Ocasio-Cortez zei dat de wereld over 12 jaar zal eindigen onder meer vanwege natuurrampen.
99,7 procent minder
Shellenberger: “Er sterven in vergelijking met de piek in 1931 99,7 procent minder mensen als gevolg van natuurrampen.”
In 1931 stierven in totaal 3,7 miljoen mensen door natuurrampen. In 2018 waren dat er slechts 11.000.
Het IPCC schat dat de zeespiegel tegen 2100 zo’n 0,6 meter is gestegen. “Klinkt dat apocalyptisch of onbeheersbaar?” vraagt Shellenberger.
Hij wijst erop dat een derde van Nederland zich onder zeeniveau bevindt en dat sommige gebieden ruim zeven meter onder zeeniveau liggen.
Stijgen
Daar weet het land al 400 jaar mee om te gaan, aldus de schrijver.
En dan de claims over mislukkende oogsten, hongersnood en massale sterfte.
“We produceren vandaag de dag genoeg voedsel voor 10 miljard mensen, dus 25 procent meer dan we nodig hebben,” zegt Shellenberger.
Dat aandeel zal volgens wetenschappers alleen maar blijven stijgen.
Grotere oogsten
De VN voorspelt tegen 2050 30 procent grotere oogsten. En in de armste gebieden op aarde, zoals de sub-Sahara, zullen de opbrengsten met 80 tot 90 procent stijgen.
En het zijn niet de bosbranden die ervoor zorgen dat er nog maar 300.000 koala’s zijn, aldus Shellenberger.
Richard Thornton van het Bushfire and Natural Hazards Cooperative Research Centre in Australië zei: “Klimaatverandering speelt hier een rol, maar is niet de oorzaak van deze bosbranden.”
Datzelfde geldt voor de bosbranden in de Verenigde Staten.
Verzetten
Shellenberger wijst erop dat steeds meer klimaatwetenschappers zich beginnen te verzetten tegen overdreven uitspraken van activisten, journalisten en andere wetenschappers.
“Door klimaatverandering worden we niet met uitsterven bedreigd,” zei Ken Caldeira van Stanford.
De Australische klimaatwetenschapper Tom Wigley voegde toe: “Al die jonge mensen zijn onjuist geïnformeerd. En dat is deels de schuld van Greta Thunberg. Ze zit ernaast.”

Astronomers Catch A Natural Comet Outburst In Unprecedented Detail
Data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) reveal start-to-finish sequence of an outburst from comet 46P/Wirtanen.
University of Maryland astronomers have made the most complete and detailed observations to date of the formation and dissipation of a naturally occurring comet outburst. Using data from NASA’s Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS), the researchers gained a clear start-to-finish image sequence of an explosive emission of dust, ice and gases during the close approach to Earth of comet 46P/Wirtanen in late 2018. The team members reported their results in the November 22, 2019 issue of The Astrophysical Journal Letters.

“TESS spends nearly a month at a time imaging one portion of the sky. With no day or night breaks and no atmospheric interference, we have a very uniform, long-duration set of observations,” said Tony Farnham, a research scientist in the UMD Department of Astronomy and the lead author of the research paper. “As comets orbit the sun, they can pass through TESS’ field of view. Wirtanen was a high priority for us because of its close approach in late 2018, so we decided to use its appearance in the TESS images as a test case to see what we could get out of it. We did so and were very surprised!”
According to Farnham, the TESS observations of comet Wirtanen were the first to capture all phases of a natural comet outburst, from beginning to end. He noted that three other previous observations came close to recording the beginning of an outburst event. Observations of a 2007 outburst from comet 17P/Holmes began late, missing several hours of the initial brightening phase of the event. In 2017, observations of an outburst from comet 29P/Schwassmann-Wachmann 1 (SW1) concluded early, due to limitations on pre-scheduled observation time. And, while observations from the UMD-led Deep Impact mission captured an outburst from comet Tempel 1 in unprecedented detail in 2005, the outburst was not natural—created instead by the mission’s impactor module. However, the current observations are the first to capture the dissipation phase in its entirety, Farnham said.
Although Wirtanen came closest to Earth on December 16, 2018, the outburst occurred earlier in its approach, beginning on September 26, 2018. The initial brightening of the outburst occurred in two distinct phases, with an hour-long flash followed by a more gradual second stage that continued to grow brighter for another 8 hours. This second stage was likely caused by the gradual spreading of comet dust from the outburst, which causes the dust cloud to reflect more sunlight overall. After reaching peak brightness, the comet faded gradually over a period of more than two weeks. Because TESS takes detailed, composite images every 30 minutes, the team was able to view each phase in exquisite detail.
“With 20 days’ worth of very frequent images, we were able to assess changes in brightness very easily. That’s what TESS was designed for, to perform its primary job as an exoplanet surveyor,” Farnham said. “We can’t predict when comet outbursts will happen. But even if we somehow had the opportunity to schedule these observations, we couldn’t have done any better in terms of timing. The outburst happened mere days after the observations started.”
Farnham and his colleagues are also the first to observe Wirtanen’s dust trail. Unlike a comet’s tail–the spray of gas and fine dust that follows behind a comet, growing as it approaches the sun–a comet’s trail is a field of larger debris that traces the comet’s orbital path as it travels around the sun. Unlike a tail, which changes direction as it is blown by the solar wind, the orientation of the trail stays more or less constant over time.
“The trail more closely follows the orbit of the comet, while the tail is more offset from it, as it gets pushed around by the sun’s radiation pressure. What’s significant about the trail is that it contains the largest material,” said Michael Kelley, an associate research scientist in the UMD Department of Astronomy and a co-author of the research paper. “Tail dust is very fine, a lot like smoke. But trail dust is much larger–more like sand and pebbles. We think comets lose most of their mass through their dust trails. When the Earth runs into a comet’s dust trail, we get meteor showers.”
While the current study describes initial results, Farnham, Kelley and their colleagues look forward to further analyses of Wirtanen, as well as other comets in TESS’ field of view. The team has generated a rough estimate of how much material may have been ejected in the outburst (about 2.2 million pounds, which could have left a crater close to 65 feet across), but further analysis of the estimated particle sizes in the dust tail may help improve this estimate. Observing more comets will also help to determine whether multi-stage brightening is rare or commonplace in comet outbursts.
“We also don’t know what causes natural outbursts and that’s ultimately what we want to find,” Farnham said. “There are at least four other comets in the same area of the sky where TESS made these observations, with a total of about 50 comets expected in the first two years’ worth of TESS data. There’s a lot that can come of these data. We’re still finding out the capabilities of TESS, so hopefully we’ll have more to report on this comet and others very soon.”

A fiery meteorexplosion over the Australian desert may have been an ultra-rare minimoon, researchers think.
Sometimes, objects from space come really close to Earth but are not immediately pulled in by our planet's gravity. They often orbit for a short period of time before being either pulled into the atmosphere or hurled back out into space. These objects are called temporarily captured orbiters (TCOs), but are commonly referred to as natural Earth satellites or minimoons.
In poring over data from Australia's Desert Fireball Network (DFN) — a network of cameras set up across Australia to capture images of minimoon fireballs, or minimoons entering Earth's atmosphere and burning up — a group of researchers have identified what they think is a minimoon meteor, or fireball.
This is the second time that researchers have identified a TCO blazing through the atmosphere before hitting the ground. In finding the fireball, named DN160822_03, the researchers think that it exploded over the Australian desert on Aug. 22, 2016.

By studying the object's flight path around Earth, the team was able to calculate its trajectory to see what angle it entered Earth's atmosphere at (if the object entered Earth's atmosphere at a smaller angle, it suggests that it circled Earth first).
This information combined with velocity data led the researchers to conclude that, most likely, this object was orbiting Earth before being pulled in by gravity and burning up in our planet's atmosphere. This would most likely make the object a minimoon.
By studying the flight paths of minimoons like DN160822_03, researchers could better understand how we might be able to better prevent objects from getting close to Earth and how we might be able to more easily access these objects and the resources that they may possess.
As the team states in their study, which was published Oct. 14 in the Astronomical Journal, "TCOs are a crucially important subpopulation of near-Earth objects (NEOs) to understand because they are the easiest targets for future sample-return, redirection, or asteroid mining missions."
Minimoon history
This being only the second observation of a minimoon fireball, sightings of the fiery events are incredibly rare.
Only one time, in 2006, have researchers observed a minimoon orbiting Earth. The object, named 2006 RH120, was seen through a telescope circling the planet. The object orbited Earth for about 11 months before it wriggled free from Earth's gravity and was flung back out into space.
Additionally, only one other minimoon fireball has ever been observed. The fireball was spotted by a team running a camera network in Europe in 2014.

How much does the human race have to discover about the nature of our reality? Surely there are many things and truths that yet remain to be uncovered.
NASA is no doubt responsible for concealing evidence of unidentified flying objects and strange anomalies that have been observed in space. This is true according to multiple insiders, like long time Ames Research scientist Dr. Norman Bergrun, who played a key role in the Voyager missions, the probes that were sent out and tasked with photographing Saturn, its rings and its moons. Here is a photo from that mission he was able to obtain from the agency of a large unidentified flying object hovering just outside Saturn’s rings, it’s huge, approximately the size of Earth, and is published in his book, Ringmakers of Saturn.
A few years ago (in an interview) he claimed that NASA regularly hides as well as “garbles” many photographs that, if made public, would have huge implications on the reality of what’s happening in space. He is just one example with an incredible verified background who has made claims such as this.
When it comes to astronauts, there is no shortage of them who has spoken up about the extraterrestrial/UFO phenomenon. There are many, and despite the two or three astronauts that seem to receive a lot of media attention who, on multiple occasions, denied the reality of UFOs, the majority of them have been creating awareness about the UFO/extraterrestrial phenomenon, for many years.
Gordon Cooper, aerospace engineer, and one of the seven original astronauts in Project Mercury is a great example. He has been quite outspoken about UFOs, extraterrestrials and the fact that the agency is and has played a part in the cover-up. Ex Princeton physics professor and NASA astronaut Dr. Brian O’Leary is another great example. He told the world for years that “there is abundant evidence that we are being contacted, that civilizations have been visiting us, for a very long time.” The sixth man to walk on the Moon, Dr. Edgar Mitchell is no exception as well. Prior to his recent passing, Mitchel spent years creating awareness about the fact that UFOs are very real, and that some of them are not from our own planet, but from other solar systems, and perhaps other dimensions. He also said he “happens to be privileged enough to be in on the fact that we are not alone on this planet ” and that we have “been visited many times.”
Again, the list is long, and it goes well beyond the testimony of astronauts and NASA personnel who have ‘gone against’ the agency. This field includes many of the world’s top scientists and academics, high ranking military personnel and more. There are thousands of statements, and there are millions of pages of declassified documents that go with it. That being said, anybody who claims to know exactly what’s going on is most definitely not telling the truth, as the complexity of this phenomenon is immense.
As much truth as there is in this field, there is also a massive amount of disinformation, it’s well known that multiple campaigns of disinformation have plagued the field, with these campaigns usually originating within intelligence agencies and deep levels of the government for the purposes of influencing various UFO groups and researchers.
Story Musgrave
When I saw Story Musgrave attend a UFO conference, I wasn’t too shocked. That being said, he’s not very outspoken about the phenomenon in general. But, you have to ask your self, why is Story Musgrave showing up at a UFO conference? Musgrave is known as the most educated astronaut, he’s a Doctor (MD), and also has six academic degrees. He’s also the only astronaut to fly above all five Space Shuttles.
He gives an interesting lecture below as he speaks about the UFO phenomenon. But unlike astronauts like Mitchell, for example, he is always careful to say that he doesn’t have much evidence for what he is saying. But he does speculate, with a sharp look when he makes the statement below. He bases his hypothesis on his “observations” and “what he’s been exposed to.”
So if you look at technological development, maybe we’ve been at it, whatever you want to call it, one hundred/two hundred years, industrial revolution. But you look at some planet, and some creatures that got it together, they were able to build technology over millions of years, they’re doing star travel, that’s how good they are, so…I have no proof….I have the certainty in my own being that there’s millions of people doing star travel, that’s just the way it is…Interstellar travel, for me, is going on. It’s absolutely…there’s millions of them doing it, so, that’s what’s going on.

De Amerikaanse tv-presentator Tucker Carlson deed tijdens een recent interview met de Britse oud-defensieambtenaar Nick Pope enkele opzienbarende uitspraken.
De Fox News-anchor sprake met Pope onder andere over het onderzoek naar ongeïdentificeerde vliegende objecten oftewel UFO’s.
In een aflevering van het tv-programma Ancient Aliens, die op 22 november werd uitgezonden, claimde Carlson van een ‘goed geïnformeerde bron’ te hebben vernomen dat de Amerikaanse overheid fysiek bewijs heeft van buitenaards bezoek.

“Ik heb van iemand die goed geïnformeerd is gehoord dat de Amerikaanse overheid fysiek bewijs in handen heeft dat ons veel meer kan vertellen over wat dit voor objecten zijn,” zei hij.
Pope vroeg hem vervolgens of hij verwees naar wrakstukken van UFO’s.
“Dat klopt,” zei Carlson.
Trump
In juli vroeg de presentator president Donald Trump nog naar de mogelijkheid dat we worden bezocht door een intelligent buitenaards ras.
Trump reageerde dat hij hier persoonlijk niet in gelooft, maar voegde daar gelijk aan toe dat alles mogelijk is.
Hij ontkende verder dat de Amerikaanse luchtmacht een gecrashte UFO in handen heeft.

A glowing light ship was seen over the city of Leoben, Austria this week. The person captured an image of a glowing classic disk in front of a dark cloud. The person who took the photo goes by the name of Werner Robert Pregetter. He gives only a few words saying, "So there are UFOs!" I have to say, I have heard of light ships and even seen dozens of lights in the sky moving low and fast, but this shape is one that I have not seen in a light ship. This is a classic UFO disk shape. Its upper and lower humps are visible as well as the disks outer edges.
I found three different objects in a NASA index and all are marked UNKNOWN. All were see and photographed from a space shuttle. They came from STS 32, STS61...those are two different shuttle missions and shuttles. What are they and why were they outside the window of the space shuttle? Were they UFOs? I believe they have a high probability of being alien craft. You see, the shuttle is in orbit and traveling at 17,500 miles per hour...thats 28,000 kilometers per hour! On December 2, 2019 a strange looking and moving object has been spotted in the sky over Kirton, Lincs, UK. The witness managed to take a picture before the object shot away at high speed.
The photographer who submitted the image to Mufon said: I saw this at 10.15am UK time over Kirton,Lincs UK. I was stood at my back door having a cigarette when I noticed an object in the sky.
It was moving slowly, almost hovering, then after a few seconds it shot away at high speed in the direction in was coming from.
I posted it on the local RAF spotters site to find out more. I was told there was nothing flying at that time, then my post was removed and I was told by their admin that it was a F35.
