As tech companies, car manufacturers, and governments like France usher in a self-driving transit ecosystem, handing the keys over to computers seems to make more sense.
Israeli firm Tactical Robotics wants to take self-piloting tech to the air. AirMule, an autonomous vertical take off and landing (VTOL) prototype capable of carrying people and supplies, has just demonstrated its first fully untethered autonomous flight along a preplanned route.
The unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) — now known as Comorant — uses internal rotor blades and rear horizontal thrust ducted fans to take off. It also has two laser altimeters, a radar altimeter, inertial sensors, and an electro-optic payload camera as sensors to guide its flight decisions.
That doesn’t mean the whole flight was smooth sailing. On three occasions, the robot’s flight management system (FMS) had to take over the autonomous flight control system (FCS) because the tech made incorrect decisions. And two times the FCS misjudged altitude due to inaccurate laser altimeter readings, causing the transport to land early.
“While the FCS was ‘learning’ to fly the aircraft through the various pattern maneuvers, the FMS was continuously monitoring the level of safety, and making judgements regarding if and when to intervene,” Tactical Robotics said in a press release.
More R&D is clearly in order. But the manufacturers say the UAV will one day be able to land and take off vertically from rough terrain human pilots can’t handle. They envision the drones carrying supplies and soldiers to battlefields and war zones.

Born Ninel Sergeyevna Kulagina on July 30, 1926 in Leningrad, Nina was very much an average, tough Russian woman. She was loyal to her country, joining the tank regiment of the Red Army during World War II when she was only 14. After the war, she married and became a housewife, living what anyone would describe as an average life until she began to test if the psychic abilities of her mother might have rubbed off on her.
It was during Nina’s private attempts at developing these psychic abilities that she seemingly unlocked something within her. The most well-known of these alleged abilities was psychokinesis (PK), or the moving of objects with the mind. Nina could move a wide variety of items including clock pendulums, crystal bowls, matches, cigarettes, compass needles, bread loaves, salt shakers, and many other small objects (often placed in Plexiglass boxes to show there were no strings attached). She first became aware of this ability when things would move whenever she would get angry. And aside from her famous stopping of a frog’s heart, Nina performed another fascinating feat: she separated an egg. That might not sound so amazing until you know that the egg was floating in a salt water tank two meters away from her. And she brought the yolk and white back together again when instructed to do so.
At the First Moscow International Conference of Parapsychology in 1968, footage of Nina seemingly moving objects with her mind was finally shown to the public. But with the scientific community catching wind of Nina’s astounding feats came the heavy hand of scrutiny. Skeptics including James Randi have long maintained that none of Nina’s apparent psychic abilities were anything more than common trickery and sleight of hand illusions. Just like Uri Gellar, Nina’s publicized experiments were never under ideal laboratory conditions. She was seen at home or in hotel rooms, without experts in trickery on hand. It’s been claimed that Nina had magnets implanted into her body to manipulate objects; other telekinetic claims could have employed the use of thin wires or mirrors. Yet in the USSR, laboratory experiments were performed on Nina (under the pseudonym Nelya Mikhailova) by several researchers, including Czech psychical researcher Dr. Zdenek Rejdak, psychologist B. Blazek, physicist V. F. Shvetz, Dr. J.S. Zvierev, physiologist L.L. Vasiliev, and the aforementioned Dr. Sergeyev. Dr. Rejdak published a report of his experiments (titled ‘Nina Kulagina’s Mind over Matter’) in the June 1971 issue of Psychic Magazine.
It has been argued that Nina was shown off by the USSR in an effort to make it seem like they were making huge leaps in telekinesis when in fact it was all fakery. But even though the Cold War has long since ended, Russia has continued to keep many of its secrets under lock and key. If Nina was such a glowing success, where are the scientific reports? Might they still be housed somewhere in a storage room never to see the light of day? As is the case with so many things, just because we haven’t seen something doesn’t mean it doesn’t exist.
Near the end of her life, Nina seems to have lost the abilities she became so famous for. Her exertion in manifesting these powers was blamed for a near-fatal heart attack in the late 1970s. Sharp pain in her spine, dizziness, blood sugar irregularities, failing eyesight, and many other health concerns plagued her. With deteriorating health, Nina stepped away from the endless scientific testing, conducting very limited experiments in labs up until her death in 1990. And so, the full truth died with her. Whether or not she ever possessed remarkable abilities, perhaps faking it when her powers disappeared later in life, is a matter of speculation.

Many questions are rising after a shock statements of what the Apollo 14 astronaut claims that aliens have contacted humankind several times, but Governments have to hide this for over 60 years.

If aliens visit Earth, many are asking, why not landing on the lawn in front of the White House and not get in touch directly with the President? Of course, not have landed on the lawn of the White House, but there are signs that some Presidents have done this contact.

YouTube-kanaal UFOMania plaatste beelden die zijn gemaakt door de STEREO-sondes op internet. De beelden tonen een grote bol die de zon lijkt te passeren.
UFOMania bekeek ook andere beelden die in oktober en november zijn gemaakt door de ruimtesondes, maar daarop is de vreemde bol niet te zien.

De STEREO-toestellen werden in 2006 gelanceerd en begonnen rond de zon te cirkelen. Op die manier konden wetenschappen onze zon en de zonneuitbarstingen vanuit alle hoeken bestuderen.
Dankzij STEREO-A en STEREO-B kreeg de NASA indrukwekkende 3D-beelden binnen van de zon en alle zonneactiviteit.
De missie ter waarde van 550 miljoen dollar moest in 2008 worden afgerond, maar werd verlengd wegens groot succes.

UFO-jager Pamela Johnson uit Mexico deelde de beelden op Facebook en claimde dat de zon op het object reageerde.
Ze zei verder dat het gaat om een ruimtetuig dat deel uitmaakt van de ‘Blue Spheres’ (blauwe bollen) en dat er ‘niets te vrezen is’.

As you see here looking at the moon and then moving downward, the size is the same. This is proof this is not a star, because there is no star as big as the Super moon right now. This object is obviously a UFO observing her, and possibly has woken her telepathically to come out side. This has happened to many UFO eyewitnesses. One such similar experience was the famous actor Dan Aykroyd. It was in the late 80s when Aykroyd woke up in the middle of the night and suddenly telling his wife, “they’re calling me, I want to go outside”. Of course, his wife asked who’s calling him but Aykroyd’s only response was to insist on going outside. He was told to go back to sleep and he did. The next day, the media was swamped with reports of people all over upstate new York, Quebec and Vermont, of people having the intense urge to go outside at three in the morning. I have to admit that we have seen a lot of evidence that intelligent life was in those Mars photos, but in truth, I see that there is so much in most of those photos that it couldn't possibly be a place on Earth. How could such unusual artefacts exist on Earth and were never discovered by anyone? It seems that the evidence that the Mars rover is not on Mars at all is growing. Here is some of the reasons it may not be on Mars.
1. In the color photos, 90% of time NASA puts it into FALSE COLOR, a red filter to make the photo look like a red planet. This may be a psychological trick to convince the public it really is Mars. 2. Every time other countries send a rover or satellite to Mars, it is either destroyed in Earths orbit, on landing, and a few minutes after landing. Did America sabotage those Russian missions to keep a secret?
3. We found animals, a hairy monkey, squirrel, lizard, rat, rabbit, bison and two gorillas. Its a freaking zoo on Mars if its really there. 4. The real color of the sky is blue in original color NASA photos and there were white clouds! That should not be possible on Mars...and yet, its in NASA photos. 5. If you look at Devon Island on Google Earth, you see two HD photos of NASA scientists in suits and driving the Mars rover. News from Mars continues to amaze a lot of people. There have been many findings on Mars that bring interest to humanity. The latest discovery is no different as NASA Curiosity Rover image seems to show a brick wall on the Martian surface.
One part of the picture shows the remains of a wall or building. When zooms in, it appears to look a strange structure with some precision.
UFOlogists show excitement with the find. Many are convinced it is a brick wall on Mars with perfect details, which is too perfect for it to be considered a natural object. They are especially amazed at its simplicity, yet perfect as if designed like the wall around someone’s backyard.
The image has received mix reactions.
One observer said that it is stupid and no way it’s legit as it looks so fake.
One believer, meanwhile, stated that he is very impressed, but worried of the kind of devastation that resulted to just a few artifacts or few bricks left.
The comments are interesting, but no one provides explanations why they come up with the conclusion. The alleged brick wall is just one of many things discovered on Mars that appear to indicate something beyond human understanding.
There have been so many hints of life on the Red Planet but remained just hints until today, such as a crab, a skull, and a ruined fort found on the Martian surface.

There is a rise in sightings of UFOs during volcanic eruptions and approaching earthquakes. Online conspiracy forums are filled with claims of UFO bases inside volcanoes and UFO sightings before an earthquake.
Photos and videos of UFOs emerged showing UFOs all over exploding volcanoes and around the area that would experience tremor.
Wild claims related to this subject include UFOs monitoring seismic activity or triggering volcanic eruptions and earthquakes.
Just last month, an alleged UFO sighting video surfaced online showing a UFO over an erupting Colima volcano in Mexico. Most viewers described the strange object as a cigar-shaped UFO, much like the same to the ones seen around Mexican volcanoes on live cams.
Nigel Watson, UFO Investigations Manual author, offers a more scientific explanation. UFO expert Watson noted the linking of Earth energies with UFO activity in the 1960s. In the late 1970s, scrutiny of more rigorous investigation took place, explained Watson.
Watson referred the book “Space-Time Transients and Unusual Events,” by Michael Persinger and Gyslaine Lafreniere. He said that it puts forward the evidence suggesting that tectonic strains in the crust of the Earth give sufficient energy to create columns of electrical energy and bright balls of light in the atmosphere.
The Tectonic Strain Theory (TST) offers an explanation of UFOs appearing at window areas or particular hot spots, according to Watson.
Watson added that Michael Persinger suggested the EM fields of these UFOs could trigger trance states or hallucinations in people who are close to them. Watson further explained that this might be the reason for many stories on strange encounters, such as alien abductions, that are experienced after a witness has seen the light in the sky.

U heeft de publicatie inmiddels driemaal gelezen. Is het zo leuk? ‘Nou, het is vooral heel pittige kost. Dat moet je echt even tot je nemen. Gelukkig liggen zijn ideeën wel in het verlengde van dingen waar natuur- en sterrenkundigen al sinds de jaren zeventig aan werken. En de aankondiging van dit idee deed Verlinde al jaren geleden. Dat zorgt ervoor dat je het wat gemakkelijker kunt doorgronden.’
Zijn publicatie telt zo’n 50 pagina’s. Hoe beoordeel je zoveel complexe natuurkunde? ‘Als iemand in de theoretische natuurkunde met een nieuwe theorie komt, moet je naar drie dingen kijken. Allereerst: zitten voorgaande theorieën in de nieuwe theorie besloten? Dan: kan deze theorie bestaande feiten, en waarnemingen die al gedaan zijn, verklaren? En tot slot: doet deze theorie ook een voorspelling die je kunt toetsen?’
Wat kunt u op basis van die principes concluderen? ‘Het opmerkelijke verhaal van Verlinde doet het tweede, waarnemingen verklaren, heel aardig. Het eerste – het bevatten van de oude theorieën – doet het maar ten dele. En de voorspellingen heb ik nog niet gevonden, maar het kan zijn dat ik nog wat over het hoofd zie. Het is een moeilijk artikel.’

De publicatie bevat de oude theorieën dus maar ten dele. Wat bedoelt u daarmee? ‘Toen Einstein zijn relativiteitstheorie publiceerde, kwam je in de limiet van lage snelheden en massa’s vanzelf weer uit bij de wetten van Newton en Leibniz. Maar in Verlindes publicatie is het niet zo dat wanneer je de limiet neemt voor lage massa-dichtheid of snelheden, je vervolgens de formules van de algemene relativiteitstheorie terugkrijgt. ‘Toch is het wel aannemelijk dat het allemaal klopt. De uitkomst die Verlinde krijgt, is dat hij de Newtonse zwaartekracht terugvindt met iets extra’s erbij. Dat ‘iets extra’s’ moet het donkere spul in de kosmos verklaren. ‘Dat idee an sich is niet nieuw. Modified Newtonian Dynamics – MOND – deed dat al langer. Alleen was MOND heel ad hoc. Daarin verklaarden aanhangers het donkere spul met een nieuwe formule, net als Verlinde nu. Alleen werd die formule min of meer uit de duim gezogen. Daar is niets mis mee, dat mag, maar het berustte niet op onderliggende natuurkundige argumenten. ‘Bij Verlinde is dat wel het geval. Hij baseert zich heel duidelijk op de inzichten van Jacob Bekenstein, die de entropie van zwarte gaten beschreef. Die formules past Verlinde nu toe op het hele heelal.’
Maar daar volgen dus geen echte voorspellingen uit? ‘Niet echt. Het middenstuk van het artikel is in dat opzicht wel heel aardig. Daar komt Verlinde echt met een schatting van de hoeveelheid donker spul in het heelal en dat ziet er getalsmatig goed uit. Onze sterrenkundige collega’s moeten dat nog wel controleren. Daar wordt aan gewerkt, maar hun artikelen zijn nog niet beschikbaar.’
Wat is uw oordeel over de publicatie zoals deze er nu ligt? ‘Ik vind het heel loffelijk dat Verlinde hier nu al mee gekomen is. Hij heeft zijn ideeën heel helder onder woorden gebracht. In de geschiedenis van de natuurkunde is het ook geen uitzondering dat je een hypothese publiceert zonder dat je de onderliggende dynamica al kent. ‘Zo publiceerden Planck en De Broglie bijvoorbeeld al over het idee dat straling en materie gekwantiseerd zijn, en pakte Niels Bohr dat op om de quantumtoestanden van het waterstofatoom te beschrijven. Maar pas 26 jaar later publiceerde Schrödinger zijn vergelijking en volgde de achterliggende dynamica en bewegingsvergelijkingen. ‘Verlinde staat net als Planck aan het begin. Er is nog geen dynamica, nog geen bewegingsvergelijking. Maar dit is te mooi om toevallig te zijn.’
Als Verlinde gelijk heeft, hoe groot is dit dan? ‘Als hij gelijk heeft, dan is dit zeer groot. Als onze sterrenkundige collega’s bewijzen dat zijn getallen kloppen met onze waarnemingen, dan weten we dat hij in de juiste richting zit. Dan is dit een heel belangrijke publicatie. ‘Toch lost Verlinde niet letterlijk elk openstaand probleem op. Er zijn nog wel wat dingen over waar ik me zorgen over maak.’
Waar maakt u zich dan nog zorgen over? ‘Afgelopen april publiceerde ik in Nature over de kosmologische constante. Die is ongeveer 10118-maal groter dan de sterrenkunde toelaat, een nare joker in ons kosmische kaartspel. Dat probleem lost Verlinde nog niet op.’
Is dat erg? ‘Misschien. Kijk, we weten dat het heelal niet in een flits opblaast. Blijkbaar is er dus een manier waarop het heelal dit heeft opgelost, alleen kennen we die manier nog niet. Verlinde impliceert dat hij het vertrouwen heeft dat zijn theorie dit punt uiteindelijk ook oplost, dat het wel goed komt.’
Verlinde lost volgens hem het probleem van donkere materie op. Werkt zijn verklaring voor elk verschijnsel waarbij astronomen nu donkere materie nodig menen te hebben? ‘Nee, niet allemaal. Zwaartekrachtslenzen en het ‘Bullet Cluster’ van sterrenstelsels, zijn bijvoorbeeld nog niet door astronomen gecontroleerd. Maar ik heb het vermoeden dat dat getalsmatig wel zal blijken te kloppen. ‘Dat komt hierdoor. In de beschrijving die Verlinde kiest, kun je slechts 1 parameter helemaal vrij kiezen en dat is de tijdschaal. Voor die tijd kiest hij een uitdrukking die grofweg overeenkomt met de leeftijd van het heelal. Dat betekent dat alle getallen in die theorie van kosmologische grootte zullen zijn. Daarom vermoed ik dat niet alleen het gedrag van losse sterrenstelsels, maar ook van clusters van sterrenstelsels samen goed door zijn theorie zullen worden beschreven.’

Astronauts went out there and saw strange things that took a toll on their lives. Claudie Haigneré is one of them.
The incident took place in 2008 but was once again brought into attention by the controversial death of Max Spiers. Spiers was a British UFO investigator who was found dead on a friend’s couch after texting his mother that she should start an investigation if anything happened to him. It seems that those who encounter or pursue extraterrestrials are destined to get in trouble.
Claudie Haigneré is a French doctor and politician but prior to that, she was an astronaut. In 1996, Claudie and her husband, Jean-Pierre Haigneré spent more than two weeks aboard the Russian MIR space station.
Having studied rheumatology and neuroscience, Claudie’s outer space research aimed to provide insights about how astronauts adapted their motor and cognitive skills in zero gravity.
In 2001, she became the first European woman to visit the International Space Station. She saw things that regular Joes never get to see. And it probably left a mark on her.
Claudie retired from space work and between 2002 and 2005 she became involved with politics, acting as a minister delegate for research and new technologies. Following budget cuts, she started working in a biology lab at the Pasteur Institute in Paris. Obscure media reports claim that while there, Claudie was at the forefront of human/alien DNA research. And then things started going south for her.
In 2008, a fire ravaged the laboratory she worked in:
Fire broke out Wednesday in a biology laboratory at the Pasteur Institute in Paris, famed for research on fighting infectious diseases, officials said.
No victims were reported, and no sensitive materials or viruses were affected by the fire, which was extinguished by firefighters, an official at the institute said. The official was not authorized to be publicly named according to company policy.
The cause of the blaze was unclear.
In December of 2008, news outlets reported that Claudie Haigneré had to be rushed to a local hospital after an attempted suicide. She had taken a fistful of sleeping pills and was screaming “Earth must be warned!”
Before falling in a coma, Claudie had to be restrained. Such a strong reaction from a renowned and respected astronaut scientist could not have come without a cause. While Claudie herself blamed the whole incident on burnout syndrome, conspiracy theorists are convinced there was something darker that determined her to try and take her own life.
Sources claim that the former astronaut’s stay in Earth’s orbit opened her eyes regarding our planet’s hidden history:
FSB internal reports on Dr. Haigneré state that since her return from space she had become convinced that our Earth had been visited in our historical past by ‘ancient astronauts’ who had not only had colonized our Planet but had genetically engineered the then existing semi-human life forms into our present day human race.
Claudie is alive and well today but she chooses not to speak publicly about her ordeal. We can only speculate about her reasons to remain silent, but sometimes, actions speak for themselves.

A 6-minute YouTube conspiracy film by UFOmania has resurfaced this week that claims France's first female astronaut screamed "Earth must be warned!" before she attempted suicide. According to the video's content, Claudie Haigneré, who is now 59, had to be restrained after shouting the shocking warning -- before becoming comatose from a sleeping pill overdose.
An esteemed scientist, Haigneré was a backup crew member for the Mir Altaïr mission in 1993, and later in 1996 she made it to the Mir space station. The French astronaut also went on to become the first European woman to reach the International Space Station (ISS). In fact, the asteroid 135268 Haigneré is named after Claudie and her husband Jean-Pierre Haigneré.
The acclaimed astronaut entered French politics after retiring from her space career and became the minister delegate for research and new technologies from 2002 to 2004, and subsequently the European affairs minister delegate from 2004 to 2005. After her stint in politics, Haigneré started to work in a biology lab at France's Pasteur Institute.
At this point in Haigneré's life, things reportedly started to get a bit strange. In December 2008, claims surfaced that the former French astronaut had to be hospitalized after overdosing on sleeping pills. Furthermore, before lapsing into coma, the ex-politician was found allegedly screaming "Earth must be warned!" Later on, Haigneré, who is now the director of Europe's largest science museum -- Cité des Sciences et de l'Industrie -- blamed the bizarre episode on burnout syndrome.
However, conspiracy theorists and alien enthusiasts did not reportedly buy the explanation and believe that Haigneré was trying to warn humans about extraterrestrial life and aliens. Subsequently a video was released, which has resurfaced on YouTube channel UFOmania, and reportedly seems to be a blend of fact and fiction.
According to a report in the New York Post, the video has used quotes from real reports by news agency AFP; however, they have been taken way out of context. Additionally, "human/alien DNA research" does not exist because there have never been any alien encounters, as per the report. At most, Haigneré's story resurfaces whenever credence is needed for associated conspiracy theory stories by self-proclaimed ufologists and alien experts.
Furthermore, this time the video resurface can be pointed to the mysterious death of conspiracy theorists Max Spiers last month, who was found dead after warning his mother to investigate if anything happened to him. It was also claimed that Spiers vomited black liquid before his death, fueling speculations further.
So, what is fact and what is fiction? For now, it seems the truth is out there. Meanwhile you can watch the video!
A YouTube channel recently uploaded a footage of what seems to be a UFO flying across the supermoon. The small dot seen on the picture was the alleged alien seemingly mesmerized by the moon as well.
A former member of the Chinese government confirmed the existence of aliens and extraterrestrial beings during a recent UFO disclosure community meeting.
The quest for hunting extra-terrestrial beings continue to baffle space enthusiasts. Despite that, there is an obvious question mark on the particular topic.
The former Chinese diplomat left his colleagues in utter shock as he disclosed a jaw-dropping fact. He maintained that otherworldly life and intelligence very much exists and the Chinese government even has evidence that proves alien visiting Earth in the form of UFOs.
Shi-Li Sun pulled off a shock when the topic of discussion at the recent UFO disclosure summit was the existence of alien life.
The well-known former senior Chinese diplomat and now the president of the World Chinese UFO Federation established that years of research have allowed them to gather creditable indication that proves that alien life is surrounding us and that they have been visiting Earth.
"After years of research, a large number of Chinese UFO scholars, including myself, are convinced of the authenticity of UFOs and the existence of UFOs and aliens," he announced before a panel consisting of six former members of the U.S. Congress at a recent Citizen Hearing on Disclosure organized by Stephen Bassett's Paradigm Research Group (PRG).
"I have also written articles that appeared in China's encyclopedia, which is a very prestigious encyclopedia that was edited by Shen Shituan, a famous scientist in my country," he added as quoted by Express.
Shituan, who is a luminary in the field of science and also served as the president of Beijing Aerospace University, maintained that the sighting reports of UFO and other findings of alien life should be taken seriously.
"Some of these sightings are real, some are fake and with others it's unclear," Shituan reportedly said.
"All these phenomena are worth researching."
According to the website Alien UFO Sightings, Shi-Li Sun previously highlighted that extraterrestrial beings dwell among us.
According to the UFO researcher, aliens exist among humans and they are present at different levels of human strata. Some are blue collar workers and others are either corporate executive or government officials.
Sometimes humans are unable to identify them because they are masked as humans.
Shi-Li Sun is only one of few Chinese officials who took it to the media in order to testify that the government has gleaned heavy evidence from scientific experiments and research. The collected insight then points towards the existence of alien life and UFO carriers as a whole.
Similarly, a former Canadian Minister of National Defense is also among those who maintained that alien visitors have tried to contact US and Russian governments.
But eventually, these governments were covering up the truth and were not exposing it to the media.
There have been infinite cases regarding UFO and alien sightings, although the truth is yet to be unfolded.
The search for mysterious “fast radio bursts”—very brief but intense pulses of radio waves from outer space—is heating up. Nobody knows what causes these powerful bursts, but some have even speculated that the signals could be transmitted by distant alien civilizations. In fact, astronomers are so perplexed by the phenomenon that it is driving a renaissance in radio astronomy.

Now an international team of astronomers has detected the brightest ever fast radio burst. Dubbed FRB 150807 after its discovery date, the burst of intense radio waves lasted less than half a millisecond—that is 0.1 percent of the time it takes a human to blink. And the study, published in Science, has come closer than any before it to pinning down where the blip came from. The research comes just days after another study reported having seen a fast radio burst together with an outburst of gamma rays, extremely energetic electromagnetic radiation.
Despite their intensity, the nature and origin of fast radio bursts is still hotly debated. Some astronomers have suggested these brief, intense flashes are flares produced in the atmospheres of certain stars in our own Milky Way galaxy—a process similar to solar flares. Others argue they are caused by cosmic collisions such as a neutron star (a collapsed core of a large star) colliding with a black hole in a distant galaxy, or speculated that they could be alien signals.
The first fast radio burst—the Lorimer burst—was discovered serendipitously by radio astronomers using Australia’s Parkes telescope to search for pulsed radio emissions from spinning neutron stars called pulsars. The Lorimer burst remained a curiosity until other fast radio bursts at different positions in the sky were discovered by other telescopes such as the giant Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico and the 100-meter Greenbank dish in the U.S.
But progress in understanding this enigmatic phenomenon has been slow. This is partly down to the short duration of the bursts, the limited resolution provided by the telescopes and the uncertainty of the sky positions of the bursts. Trying to discover a burst and, at exactly the same time, pinpoint accurately where in the sky it comes from is difficult. If a radio signal could be backed up by telescopes that are searching for other kinds of electromagnetic radiation (such as X-rays or the kind of “optical light” that we can see), we could measure the distance and understand the physics processes driving these events. If the processes driving these bursts are similar to those responsible for other cosmic explosions, such as gamma ray bursts, astronomers suspect that radiation at other wavelengths is likely to be emitted in the same event that caused the fast radio bursts. But it’s proven difficult to catch.
Indirect estimates of distances have been made by measuring how the radio signal is smeared out. This can help infer the amount of material the light has travelled through. From this, the distance of the fast radio burst from Earth can be estimated, using a variety of assumptions such as the amount of matter between us. Such measurements have indicated that the origins of fast radio bursts lie far beyond our galaxy.
Tracing the blip
FRB 150807 is remarkable for its short duration, radio brightness and high degree of linear “polarization”—a property describing the plane of the vibrations that make up the waves. Combining these properties, the new study suggests that the burst occurred in a galaxy over a billion light years away, identified by the Visible and Infrared Survey Telescope for Astronomy (VISTA) Hemisphere Survey. This is the closest we’ve ever got to pinpointing where a fast radio burst came from.
The polarization of light is affected by magnetic fields surrounding it. So knowing that helped the researchers estimate the magnetic properties of the plasma through which the radio waves travelled. Their analysis suggests that there’s only negligible magnetization of plasma close to the burst site. Interestingly, if this is correct, it would rule out strongly magnetized objects such as young neutron stars, magnetars or other objects causing it—favored models so far.
This study shows that as the small number of recorded fast radio bursts grows and their properties become better known, the exciting prospect of understanding what produces them becomes increasingly feasible. They could also be used to map out the magnetic fields in the universe—something we know little about. The next breakthrough may come with the first detection of a visible counterpart or optical afterglow, from which we can measure an accurate distance.
It may happen sooner than you think, given the other recent study’s tantalising report of possibly the first detection of a gamma-rays burst coinciding with a fast radio burst with NASA’s Swift satellite. If the two bursts do indeed come from the same source that would be very exciting—it could mean this source is lot more energetic than we had anticipated.
Analysis of FRB 150807 predicts that these events should not be rare—with 190 occurring across the sky per day. Future facilities such as the Large Synoptic Survey Telescope—that will survey the entire night sky every few days at optical wavelengths and the radio equivalent—and the Square Kilometre Array will revolutionize our view and understanding of these mysterious blips and the violent, ever-changing universe in which they live.
Astronomers have discovered a large valley on Mercury that provides further evidence for the planet's shrinkage — an odd phenomenon that has been the topic of debate for decades. NASA created a video overview of Mercury's 'Great Valley' here.
This newfound feature is about 620 miles long, 250 miles wide and 2 miles deep (1,000 by 400 by 3.2 kilometers), making it larger than Arizona's famous Grand Canyon and deeper than the Great Rift Valley in East Africa, scientists said. [10 Strange Facts About Mercury (A Photo Tour)]
"Unlike Earth's Great Rift Valley, Mercury's great valley is not caused by the pulling apart of lithospheric plates due to plate tectonics; it is the result of the global contraction of a shrinking one-plate planet," Tom Watters, a senior scientist at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum in Washington, D.C., said in a statement.

Watters is lead author of a study published in Geophysical Research Letters that describes Mercury's great valley. He and his colleagues spotted the feature in images captured by NASA's MErcury Surface, Space ENvironment, GEochemistry and Ranging (MESSENGER) spacecraft, which orbited the planet from March 2011 through April 2015.
Mercury is 3,032 miles (4,880 km) wide, and the vast majority of the planet's volume is taken up by its metallic core, which is estimated to be about 2,500 (4,000 km) wide. That core has been cooling slowly since Mercury (and the other planets) formed nearly 4.6 billion years ago, and the little world has been shrinking as a result.
The aforementioned debate involves the extent of that shrinkage. Observations by NASA's Mariner 10 spacecraft, which flew by Mercury three times in the mid-1970s, suggested that the planet has contracted by 1.2 to 2.5 miles (2 to 4 km) since its formation — significantly less than researchers' models had predicted.
But MESSENGER got a better look at Mercury, and its meticulous work allowed scientists to up the shrinkage estimate to 8.7 miles (14 km) or so. This higher number reconciled theory with observation.
As Watters noted, Mercury's crust is composed of a single plate (unlike Earth's, which consists primarily of seven large, interlocking plates). As Mercury has cooled, the rocks in this plate have been pushed together, thrusting some of them upward in cliff-like formations called scarps.
Two large, parallel scarps bound Mercury's great valley. But the valley's floor lies below the surrounding terrain, suggesting that the valley also formed via another process called "long-wavelength buckling," NASA officials said. Basically, the valley floor sagged downward as nearby rocks were pushed up.
"There are similar examples of this on Earth involving both oceanic and continental plates, but this may be the first evidence of this geological process on Mercury," Watters said.
