New Mexico artist collective claims they are behind the mysterious steel monoliths popping up across the world.... and are selling them for $45K each

The mystery shrouding the metal monoliths discovered across the globe appears to be revealed after a New Mexico art collective claimed responsibility. 

Conspiracy theories speculating aliens circulated when a stainless steel, 10-foot monolith was discovered in a remote area of the Utah desert by wildlife officials on November 18. 

Nearly two weeks later, a similar installation was spotted overlooking a river on Batca Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt in northern Romania.

And a third structure appeared at the top of the Pine Mountain in Atascadero, California, on Wednesday in another plot twist.

Now, The Most Famous Artist has seemingly taken credit for the triangular installations, and are selling them for $45,000. 

The art collective, based in Santa Fe, posted an image on Friday of a tall monolith being wheeled out of a workshop. 

'Verified Checking in... any collectors interested in an official alien monolith? Asking $45k,' the post read, poking fun at the many the online conspiracies.

Matty Mo, founder of The Most Famous Artist, shared a photo that showed a metal monolith being wheeled around a workspace 

A second post showed the viral Utah monolith with the caption 'monolith-at-a-service.com,' and specs of the artwork, noting 'museum quality materials' among others. 

 The Most Famous Artist account then shared Instagram photos of articles covering the monoliths, original concept art and, perhaps most telling, masked artist who appeared in the process of making a monolith.

'You mean it wasn’t aliens?! Monoliths-as-a-service.com,' the caption read.

When followers asked the Instagram account' was it you?', the account replied, ‘if by you mean us, yes.'   

The account also shared a photo of a fourth monolith in Joshua Tree Park. 

'ANOTHER Monolith outside of Joshua Tree. That makes 4. What does it mean?' the photo's caption read. 

The founder of the art collective, Matty Mo, spoke about the art installations in an interview with Mashable, but stopped short of giving an outright answer. 

'I am not able to say much because of legalities of the original installation,' Mo told Mashable via DM. 

'I can say we are well known for stunts of this nature and at this time we are offering authentic art objects through monoliths-as-a-service. I cannot issue additional images at this time but I can promise more on this in the coming days and weeks.'

The publication noted that Mo 'would neither confirm nor deny that he was taking credit, and wouldn’t share additional proof.'

Mashable noted that the Romanian monolith hadn't been pictured anywhere on the groups social media or website. 

Mo said that's because he 'only had 3 spots for photos on my site.'

Mo began sharing images of the monoliths to his Twitter account on Thursday. 

However, Mashable noted that Mo may have potential collaborators in Carlos Estrada, a content creator at Media Arts Lab, and Erik Junke, a photographer.

 Estrada reportedly hinted to his contributions in on Instagram, writing: 'did me and @themostfamousartist make the monolith?'

The Most Famous Artist's account answered: 'NOT NO.'

Junke shared two photo of the California desert to their Instagram in September and October. 

Each photo, titled 'Doorway' and 'Doorway II,' had bright rectangles edited into the photo and were tagged '#monolith.' 

They were reportedly included in The Most Famous Artist's Instagram Stories with captions like: 'Are people talking about monoliths or something? It's like they didn't see it coming.'

'They're everywhere and there will be plenty more to locate. Go straight to the source to find out more and get your very own @TheMostFamousArtist @TMFACommunity,' another caption read, per Mashable.

All three original monoliths have been removed since their installation.

In Utah, images emerged of four men working in the dead of night to remove the monolith.

Sylvan Christensen and Andy Lewis dentified themselves on Instagram as one of the men, and Christensen shared a video showing part of the process. 

The short clip, which has already been viewed over 100,000 times on TikTok, was captioned: 'Don’t abandon your personal property on public land if you don’t want it to be taken out #utahmonolith #leavenotrace,' accompanied with a shrugging emoji.

The monolith in Romania vanished just four days after its unexpected arrival. 

'The 2.8 meter (9ft) tall structure disappeared overnight as quietly as it was erected last week,' journalist Robert Iosub of the Ziar Piatra Neamt local newspaper, who had seen the structure, told Reuters.

'An unidentified person, apparently a bad local welder, made it ... now all that remains is just a small hole covered by rocky soil,' local reporters had discovered, he said.

A large 10-foot tall monolith has appeared on the street outside Grandpa Joe's candy shop in Pittsburgh

The sheet metal structure had a badly-welded join, he added.

A spokeswoman for Piatra Neamt police, Georgiana Mosu, said officers are conducting an inquiry into the illegally-installed structure, which was positioned in a protected archaeological area from November 27.

 City officals in California said their monolith disappeared early Thursday morning. A press release said video shared to social media showed a group of men removing the art piece and replacing it with a wooden cross. 

Meanwhile, a similar -or copycat - monolith appeared outside of Grandpa Joe's candy store in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on Thursday.

Bizarre: People believe a 'dead artist' is responsible for the mysterious monolith in the Utah desert

While the discovery is still surrounded by mystery, some people reckon that the monolith may have been placed by a 'dead artist' in the desert.

Last week, a mysterious-looking metal monolith appeared out of nowhere in the middle of the barren Utah desert, creating quite a stir across the world.

What started as routine wildlife assistance took an extraterrestrial turn for Utah's Department of Public Safety when its officers, surveying the area in a helicopter, stumbled upon the object.

According to reports, the 12-feet high monolith was found on 18th November when officers from the Utah Department of Public Safety's Aero Bureau were flying by helicopter in a measure meant to help the Division of Wildlife Resources count bighorn sheep in southeastern Utah.

Soon after the discovery, videos and pictures of the monolith were widely circulated on social media.

As expected, netizens came up with various theories about how it appeared in the middle of the desert.

While the discovery is still surrounded by mystery, some people reckon that the monolith may have been placed by a 'dead artist' in the desert.

Several art enthusiasts around the world claimed that the monolith looks like the work of sculptor John McCracken. The bizarre part of this claim is that McCracken died in 2011.

John McCracken was a minimalist artist who lived and worked in Los Angeles, Santa Fe New Mexico and New Work. His work was included in every important exhibition of Minimalist sculpture in the US and Europe.

David Zwirner, an art gallery owner, tried to add some logic to the discovery by sharing a picture of a similar monolith that was made by McCracken. Zwirner shared the picture of the old monolith alongside the newly discovered one on Instagram and captioned it: “The portal to Utah is at David Zwirner 20th Street.”

"While this is not a work by the late American artist John McCracken, we suspect it is a work by a fellow artist paying homage to McCracken,"  a spokesperson from The David Zwirner Gallery, later told Art News

What makes this theory even more interesting is the conversation McCracken had with his son back in 2002.

McCracken's son, Patrick, recalled a with New York Times: "We were standing outside looking at the stars and he said something to the effect of that he would like to leave his artwork in remote places to be discovered later.""

With mysterious monoliths being in the news so much lately, I thought I would turn my attention away from the Earth and take a trip to Mars, so to speak. It was back in 1968 when the science-fiction blockbuster, 2001: A Space Odyssey – the work of producer and director, Stanley Kubrick – hit cinemas all around the world and raked in close to $200 Million. In the opening segment of the movie we see a tribe of primitive, early “ape-men” fighting for survival in the harsh landscape of what is now the continent of Africa – albeit in the film it plays out millions of years ago. One day the tribe awakes to find that overnight a strange, black-colored monolith has appeared in their very midst. In no time at all, the intelligence levels of the creatures are increased by, it appears, the monolith itself. The implication is that something of an extraterrestrial nature has kick-started human civilization into what will eventually be high gear. As amazing and as unbelievable as it may sound, a monolith has been photographed on the surface of Phobos. A case of fact eerily mirroring fiction? Well, that very much depends on one’s own opinion.

We have a man named Efrain Palermo to thank for bringing this incredible matter to light. As someone with a deep interest in Mars and its moons, he decided to make an extensive review of the many pictures that NASA had secured from its Mars Global Surveyor in 1998. Palermo was amazed by what he found. He said that while studying one particular image from Phobos “…my eye caught something sticking up out of the surface.” As to what that “something” was, Palermo added: “I downloaded it into Photoshop and zoomed into that area, and there it was, an apparent cylindrical shaped object casting a longish shadow and having a slanted roof.” Dr. Mark Carlotto, the author of The Martian Enigmas, and someone who has undertaken groundbreaking research into the controversies surrounding the Face on Mars and the Cydonia region, took an interest in the apparent monolith. Palermo explains that Carlotto “…referred me to Lan Fleming a NASA imaging specialist who has interest in Mars and other solar system anomalies. Lan looked at it and upon further examination and study concluded as did I, that this was a physical anomaly on the surface of Phobos.” That’s putting it mildly.

Fleming worked at the Johnson Space Center and took a deep interest in the monolith, even going so far as to suggest that the monolith was not a random piece of oddly formed rock. Closer and clearer imagery analysis demonstrated that the monolith actually had a somewhat-Pyramid-like shape, and not that of a typical monolith. The point, however, was that the monolith still appeared to be the creation of some form of intelligence. Phobos lacks an atmosphere; thus there cannot be any kind of natural erosion on Phobos that might otherwise allow for the transformation of a regular rock into something radically different. And, something undeniably recognizable to us, too.

Fleming made this statement: “There seems to be no good reason to put the word ‘monolith’ in quotes to describe this object. Efrain’s interpretation is absolutely correct. At the very least, this object is a monolithic block of stone, although its high reflectivity may indicate that it is composed of something else. But how likely is it that it’s artificial? That depends in part on how tall the object is relative to the width of its base. A block of stone several times longer than its height created from the impact of some large meteoroid would be unlikely to land on its narrow end and remain upright.” Not only that: Buzz Aldrin, the second man on the surface of the Moon, said: “We should visit the moons of Mars. There’s a monolith there; a very unusual structure on this little potato shaped object that goes around Mars once every seven hours. When people find out about that they are going to say, ‘Who put that there? Who put that there?’ Well, the universe put it there, or if you choose God put it there.”  Or, perhaps, it was all down to the Martians.

Guys a fourth monolith appeared on a sidewalk in San Antonio, Texas in front of a Lab today. They say its made of wood thats been painted silver, but who knows? As always, it seems to be too popular and the Americans are making jokes, memes and even fakes to get publicity and attention. I'm not sure why more fakes are being made of UFO, alien, ghost and even monolith videos and photos, but one thing is clear, if its from the US...I remain a bit skeptical about it. Well, with covid ruining the world, killing millions, its easy to understand how people need a few good laughs and need to blow off some steam to relax. I have to admit, the zoo posting the monolith with the hippos was extremely cute and funny.

It is more than three metres tall and is an upturned triangular prism. According to reports, the California monolith was not firmly attached to the ground, unlike Utah's. And from what I just heard moments ago...the California monolith is now gone. Yes you heard me correctly. However I do need to find sources to confirm that. 

 

Whats this all mean? Remember when I said one was not an alien invasion? Well, three in three different parts of the world is a good start to probing the environment to a future invasion point. This is getting a bit creepy.

What is the mystery behind all of the “alien monoliths” that have been suddenly appearing and disappearing?

When a huge silver monolith was spotted in a very remote section of the desert in southeastern Utah, it immediately created a media sensation.  But then it disappeared.  A similar monolith had also been discovered in Romania, but now it is gone too.  Then on Wednesday, everyone was buzzing about a third monolith that had been spotted in California.  They are being called “alien monoliths”, but nobody knows who created them or if the three monoliths are even from the same source.  But after being bombarded by the science fiction movies that Hollywood has been creating for decades, the world is definitely hungry for news that we are being contacted by someone from beyond.

The monolith saga started last month when a biologist spotted a large shiny object from the helicopter that he was flying in…

Officers from the Utah Department of Public Safety’s Aero Bureau were flying by helicopter last Wednesday, helping the Division of Wildlife Resources count bighorn sheep in southeastern Utah, when they spotted something that seemed right out of “2001: A Space Odyssey.”

“One of the biologists … spotted it, and we just happened to fly directly over the top of it,” pilot Bret Hutchings told CNN affiliate KSL. “He was like, ‘Whoa, whoa, whoa, turn around, turn around!’ And I was like, ‘What.’ And he’s like, ‘There’s this thing back there — we’ve got to go look at it!’”

The Utah monolith appears to have been riveted together, and that would seem to indicate that human technology was used to construct it.  We are being told that it was definitely very sturdy, and helicopter pilot Bret Hutchings estimated that it was “between 10 and 12 feet high”…

And there it was — in the middle of the red rock was a shiny, silver metal monolith sticking out of the ground. Hutchings guessed it was “between 10 and 12 feet high.” It didn’t look like it was randomly dropped to the ground, he told KSL, but rather it looked like it had been planted.

Subsequently, Internet sleuths discovered exactly where the Utah monolith was located and they used Google Earth to determine that it had appeared some time between August 2015 and October 2016…

After that, a Reddit user was able to find the monolith on Google Earth. The coordinates of the strange monolith are 38.343080°, -109.666190° and plugging that into Google Earth shows you it’s just south of Dead Horse Point State Park, between the park and Needles Point, a tourist outlook. Others used Google Earth’s historical imaging data to narrow the appearance of the monolith in the area sometime between August of 2015 and October of 2016. As one of the internet sleuths pointed out, the three-sided monolith is miles from the closest paved road.

So it isn’t as if this monolith came out of nowhere.  Apparently it had been there for as long as five years.

The world was stunned when the Utah monolith suddenly disappeared, and at first nobody knew what happened to it.

But now two men have come forward and have admitted that they removed it…

As mysteriously as it showed up, the strange monolith disappeared, and Sylvan Christensen and Andy Lewis now say they’re among those responsible, according to reports.

“We removed the Utah monolith because there are clear precedents for how we share and standardize the use of our public lands, natural wildlife, native plants, fresh water sources, and human impacts upon them,” Lewis and Christensen said in a statement sent to Grit Daily.

They even posted a video on YouTube that shows them removing the monolith.

Christensen and Lewis are just private citizens, and so it was rather presumptuous for them to grab what could have been a potentially important object.

I think that it is quite likely that they will be getting a visit from law enforcement authorities.

Shortly after the Utah monolith was discovered, another monolith popped up in Romania…

The mysterious metal structure in Romania was found a few metres from the well-known archaeological landmark the Petrodava Dacian Fortress.

It is a dark metallic colour and appears to be covered in concentric scribble-like rings.

The shiny triangular structure has a height of about four metres and one side faces Mount Ceahlau, known locally as the Holy Mountain.

This monolith appeared to be not constructed as well as the Utah monolith, and unlike the Utah monolith it suddenly appeared just recently.

Could it have been created by a copycat?

At this point we don’t know, and it is being reported that it is now gone…

But Reuters reported Tuesday that the shiny metal Romanian monolith has disappeared, quoting journalist Robert Iosub of the local newspaper Ziar Piatra Neamt.

“The 2.8 metre (9ft) tall structure disappeared overnight as quietly as it was erected last week,”  Iosub said.

That could have been the end of the story, but now another monolith has been found in California…

Now, yet another monolith has been discovered, this time in California.

“There is currently a monolith at the top of Pine Mountain in Atascadero!” tweeted Connor Allen on Wednesday afternoon, with a trio of pictures capturing the strange new monolith at the top of Pine Mountain in Atascadero, California.

This new monolith appears to be fairly flimsy, and according to a local news report it was first spotted on Wednesday morning…

According to local newspaper The Atascadero News, the monument appeared on the mountain on Wednesday morning. Hikers naturally flocked to take in the shiny metal object.

A few years ago, the “creepy clown” phenomenon took America by storm as hordes of copycats were inspired by a few initial news stories.

It looks like the same sort of thing may be happening again.

We live at a time when people are always looking for the next big social media stunt, and these monoliths have definitely gotten a lot of attention.

Meanwhile, our world is literally coming apart at the seams all around us, and things are only going to get worse in the years ahead.

When reality is unpleasant, many would rather focus on just about anything else, and these monoliths are definitely an interesting distraction.  But all three of them appear to have been created by humans using very common technology, and so they aren’t signs that the “aliens” are about to arrive after all.

But without a doubt, our world has become a very strange place and it is getting stranger with each passing day.

The new California monolith was torn down overnight by a group of right-wing young men who livestreamed their vandalism in a grainy video posted on the blockchain streaming site DLive.

In the video, a group of three men are seen pushing the statue over and chanting "America First" and "Christ is King." The men, one of whom was wearing a "Make America Great Again" headband, called part of the monolith's construction "gay" then replaced it monolith with a wooden cross. It is a decidedly bleak turn in the ongoing monolith saga that has generally been a delightful distraction for a world wracked by a pandemic.

“Christ is king in this country. We don’t want illegal aliens from Mexico or outer space,” a man in the video says. “So let’s tear this bitch down.”

As the group of three struggle to topple the 200-pound statue, they can be heard chanting as they sway it back and forth. Eventually, the monolith’s base breaks and it falls to the ground. 

The group then places a wooden cross near the site of the monolith. They go on to pose and take pictures with the two pieces of plywood, all stepping with one boot on the monolith as if it’s a hunting trophy. After the photo shoot, they tie ropes around the monolith and drag it down the mountain, calling it names and cheering. 

"It was a learning experience. Nobody got arrested … It was fine because it was funny," a man says on the stream after the monolith was taken down.

The California monolith was discovered Wednesday morning atop Pine Mountain in Atascadero by a group of hikers. It is the third silver monolith to be found in the past weeks—the first in Utah’s red rock country and then shortly after, another was found on a hill in the Romanian town of Piatra Neamţ.

In a video posted to a DLive account run by someone with the username CultureWarCrimnal, the group of men claims to have driven for over 5 hours to get to the statue’s site, streaming most of the time. The man who appears in the later video is wearing military fatigues and camo face paint. He’s vaping while saying things like, “I will fuck you to death if you don’t sing.” The group goes on to sing "Battle Hymn of the Republic" and other military-centric songs, all while greeting his viewers with vulgar, racist commentary. Two other members in the back of the car have combat helmets on with night-vision goggles attached. 

Throughout the video they mentioning burning crosses and white power. 

On the way down Pine Mountain, the group is seemingly pursued by an unidentified party. CultureWarCriminal and others run into the bushes to hide and turn off their camera’s lights. The person with the camera claims someone is setting canines after them—no barking is heard. Shortly after, voices can be heard getting closer to the group. A person yells, “grab the cross and beat them with it.”

CultureWarCriminal and his crew then have an impromptu roundtable discussion in the bushes, contemplating if those pursuing them are a part of the Antifa movement. “Antifa isn’t one to underestimate,” the group concludes. They then devise a plan, seemingly getting excited using military vernacular, to call the police and frame those after them as the monolith destroyers. In the end, the crusaders left empty handed, back to their macho selves, bragging about their escape on the car ride home.

Previous videos posted to CultureWarCriminal’s DLive account show the man talking on Omegle about “the pedophile rape tunnels under Hillary Clinton’s house,” claiming to be a member of the Marines, and commending spitting on Black people. His Twitter further perpetuates his racist narrative and indicates his affinity towards far-right podcast host Nick Fuentes.

Calls to the Atascadero Police Department by Motherboard were not immediately returned.

 The first monolith in the Utah desert has...as I have already predicted earlier...disappeared. No sooner has it vanished than another metal monolith with a top slightly diagonal appeared in Romania. The Romania version is clearly a fake...a reproduction. How do I know? Easy, I worked on B1 bombers and KC135 tankers planes back in the USAF. I often would have to sand down the paint on the metal to repaint it. This Romanian monolith has the rounded grinding marks of a person with poor skills at using a grinder or sander. Had they held it correctly, the sanding marks would not exist.

What happened to the original monolith? 

• 1. I place an 80% chance it was stollen due to its fame and the gov saying it wants theirs...so it will soon be sold anonymously at Christies Auction house. 
• 2. I place a 15% chance that MIB or gov workers dressed in black military outfits and black trucks came and removed to object for fear its an actual alien probe or ship. NASA space probes are hollow...this monolith is said to have sounded hollow. Taken to Area 51 to cut it open and try to find out what it is and if any of its technology could be useful to the US military. 
• 3. I place a 5% chance on this actually being an alien ship or probe and that the object itself has moved its location, because the pilot who had walked away from it...may have looked human and was mingling and living in a city not too far away and thought this desert location was safe to leave the ship. Invasion? No...just a single craft is not an invasion. Pre invasion? Why? To take by force our iPhones, TVs, Computers? We have nothing other than our friendship and this planet to share with them.

It’s happened again, another monolith has disappeared. Following in its Utah counterpart’s footsteps, the Romanian monolith has suddenly vanished. 

The monolith was placed near an ancient Dacian Fortress dating back to B.C. times. Now only a shallow, rubble-holding, square-shaped hole is the only thing that remains of the structure, as seen in a video posted by Jurnal FM. 

"Hi.

UPDATE: The Romanian monolith has disappeared.," the editor-in-chief of local newspaper Ziar Piatra Neamt, which first reported the monolith's existence, wrote in an email to me this morning.

A mysterious metal monolith has appeared in Romania this week after another similar structure found in the remote Utah desert was removed by an 'unknown party'. 

The shiny triangular pillar was found on Batca Doamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt in northern Romania last Thursday.

It was spotted a few metres away from the well-known archaeological landmark the Petrodava Dacian Fortress, an fort built by the ancient Dacian people between 82 BC and AD 106. 

The peculiar find comes after a similar monolith was found in the Utah desert with no explanation, sparking wry speculation that it could have been the work of aliens, but is more likely the work of a prankster inspired by science fiction novel 2001: A Space Odyssey. 

In the book by Arthur C Clarke, later made into a film by Stanley Kubrick, a monolith first appears on Earth in Africa three million years ago and appears to confer intelligence upon a starving tribe of great apes to develop tools.

The monolith is used as a tool by an alien race to investigate worlds across the galaxy and to encourage the development of intelligent life. 

In the book, the great apes use their tools to kill animals to eat meat to end their starvation, and to kill a predatory leopard. The next day, the main character uses a club to kill the leader of a rival tribe of apes, leading to an awakening of intelligence and the development of humans.

In Utah, the pillar, which protruded approximately 12 feet from the red rocks in southern Utah, was spotted last Wednesday by baffled local BLM officials who were counting bighorn sheep from a helicopter.  

However the three-sided structure was removed by an 'unknown party' on Friday evening, the Bureau of Land Management Utah said in a statement. 

News of the discovery in Utah quickly went viral online, with many noting the object's similarity to the strange alien monoliths that trigger huge leaps in human progress in Kubrick's classic sci-fi film '2001: A Space Odyssey.' 

In Romania, the triangular structure has a height of about 13 feet and one side faces Mount Ceahlau, known locally as the Holy Mountain.     

It is one of the most famous mountains in Romania, and is listed as one of the seven natural wonders of the country.  

Romanian officials still do not know who is responsible for erecting the mysterious monolith. 

Neamt Culture and Heritage official Rocsana Josanu said: 'We have started looking into the strange appearance of the monolith. 

'It is on private property, but we still don't know who the monolith's owner is yet. It is in a protected area on an archaeological site.'

She added: 'Before installing something there, they needed permission from our institution, one that must then be approved by the Ministry of Culture.'

The Utah monolith provoked arguments about tourists who drove huge distances to see the monolith and were accused of trashing the location, which authorities had tried to keep secret to avoid people getting lost.

But many tracked down the co-ordinates and published them - leading people to drive many hours through the night to reach the 12ft aluminium structure. 

And it was revealed that a similar version appeared nearly 20 years ago on New Years Day in Seattle.

However access to the site involved a 45-minute off-road drive on a dirt track many miles from any major town at 10mph - and then a 15-minute hike up a dry stream bed. 

Across the globe UFO spotters and conspiracy theorists became obsessed with the shiny, triangular pillar.

Though the structure was only discovered by authorities this month, Google Earth images show it had been standing since at least 2015 or 2016.  

Lieutenant Nick Street, a spokesman for the Department of Public Safety, said it's possible the structure had been there for '40, 50 years, maybe more.' 

'It's the type of material that doesn't degrade with the elements. It may only be a few years old, who knows. There's no real way based on the material it's made out of how long it's actually been there,' he said on Tuesday.

Others pointed out the object's resemblance to the avant-garde work of John McCracken, an American artist who lived for a time in nearby New Mexico, and died in 2011.

McCracken was known for his freestanding sculptures in the shape of pyramids, cubes, or sleek slabs.

The monolith most closely resembles McCracken's plank-like sculptures featured at his exhibit at the David Zwirner art gallery in New York. 

On Tuesday a spokeswoman for David Zwirner said it was not one of McCracken's works, but possibly by a fellow artist paying homage.

However later in the day Zwirner gave another statement which suggested the piece was indeed by McCracken, meaning it had lain undiscovered in the desert for nearly a decade.

 'The gallery is divided on this,' Zwirner said. 'I believe this is definitely by John.'

The BLM said in a Facebook post on Saturday: 'We have received credible reports that the illegally installed structure, referred to as the 'monolith' has been removed from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) public lands by an unknown party'

Utah: Officials have refused to disclose the metal obelisk's location out of fear that curious sightseers would flock to the remote wilderness, but internet sleuths managed to pinpoint its position nonetheless. Google Earth images show it has been there since 2016 or 2015

Utah has a history of 'land art,' unusual installations that cropped up far from population centers in the 1960s and '70s.

The most famous, Spiral Jetty, a 1,500-foot-long coil by artist Robert Smithson in 1970 that's composed entirely of mud, salt crystals and basalt. 

Located on the northeastern edge of the Great Salt Lake near Rozel Point, the jetty appears and disappears depending on water levels.

So far, no one has stepped forward to claim responsibility for the monolith, though.

If this late surge keeps up, 2020 may not just be known as the Year of the COVID but also the Year of the Monolith. Just days after a mysterious monolith was discovered in a Utah desert – only to disappear just as mysteriously – another mysterious monolith appeared in Romania. If it’s not aliens, is it a global art project, an elaborate worldwide prank, undercover government antennas or a 2020 version of the Tide Pod Challenge?

Let’s catch up with the Utah monolith first. Discovered by Utah Department of Public Safety Aero Bureau workers conducting a helicopter count of big horn sheep in a southeastern Utah desert, they landed after seeing the odd object and their pictures and comments quickly went viral. The age of the monolith could not be determined, but Google Earth images showed it had been there a few years and some suggested, because the area was so remote, it could have been installed decades ago – illegally, as the government was quick to point out, because no permit for putting it on private land was ever issued. The 12-foot-tall silver triangular monolith spawned a myriad of rumors from aliens to strange cults, but because it appeared to be manmade, ‘an art project by the late artist John McCracken or one of his imitators’ was the likely winner. Unfortunately, before that could be verified, the Utah monolith disappeared on November 27, taken away by “an unknown party,” according to the Bureau of Land Management.

What about the bighorn – did they ever finish counting them?

Meanwhile, in Romania …

Neamt Culture and Heritage official Rocsana Josanu reported on November 26 the discovery of another monolith (photos and video here), very similar in size (13 feet tall) to the Utah one, at what many call the Holy Mountain or the Mount Olympus of Romania — Ceahlău Massif (Ceahlau Mountain — seen in feature image above), one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Romania. (Who knew Romania had one wonder, let alone seven?) If that’s not enough of a scandal, the monolith is just meters away from the Petrodava Dacian Fortress, one of six fortresses built between the first century BCE and the first century CE by the Dacians, a dominant culture in the area predating the Romans. The fortresses were built to defend the Dacians in the two Roman-Dacian Wars, which unfortunately ended with a Roman conquest.

This is a bigger deal to Romania than the Utah one was in the U.S. because it’s not only on private property but also in a protected area on an archeological site and a holy mountain of the Dacians with its own holiday. For anything to be built there, it needed to be approved by both the Neamt Culture and Heritage group and the Romanian Minister of Culture. Guess which ones it didn’t have?

Other Dacian ruins and monuments in Romania

So, what’s up with the monoliths all of a sudden? Both the Utah and Romanian structures appear to be manmade – the Utah one disappeared before it could be dismantled and traced, but the Romanian one appears to still be there and, because it’s on protected land in a popular tourist area, may be under heavy guard. Perhaps it can give clues to the origin of both.

In the meantime, isn’t it nice to find something in 2020 that isn’t contagious and deadly… or are they?

Mysterious Monolith Similar To One Found In Utah Appears On Romanian Hillside - Original One Has Vanished

A metal monolith identical to the one recently found in Utah has appeared on a hillside in Romania, just metres away from a historic fortress. The structure was found on BatcaDoamnei Hill in the city of Piatra Neamt, which is situated in Romania’s north-eastern Neamt County, on 26 November. 

Officials say they still do not know who the monolith belongs to, and have launched an investigation into why it’s there. The monolith – which has a height of around four metres – was discovered close to the Petrodava Dacian Fortress, a well-known archaeological landmark. 

The fortress is the oldest historical monument in Piatra Neamt, and is believed to have been destroyed by the Romans in the 2nd Century AD – although the remains can still be seen today in the form of parts of the city wall. 

The shiny monolith has appeared just metres away, with one side facing Mount Ceahlau, known locally as the Holy Mountain. It is one of the country’s most famous mountains, and is also listed as one of the Seven Natural Wonders of Romania.
