'Artificial intelligence is not a miracle cure': Nobel laureate raises questions about AI-generated image of black hole spinning at the heart of our galaxy

The monster black hole at the center of our galaxy is spinning at near "top speed," according to a new artificial intelligence (AI) model.

The model, trained partially on complex telescope data that was previously considered too noisy to be useful, aims to create the most detailed black hole images ever. However, based on the questionable quality of the data, not all experts are convinced that the AI model is accurate.

"I'm very sympathetic and interested in what they're doing," Reinhard Genzel, an astrophysicist at the Max Planck Institute for Extraterrestrial Physics in Germany and one of the winners of the 2020 Nobel Prize in physics, told Live Science. "But artificial intelligence is not a miracle cure."

For decades, scientists have been trying to observe and characterize Sagittarius A*, the supermassive black hole at the heart of our galaxy. In May 2022, they unveiled the first-ever image of this enormous object, but there were still a number of questions, such as how it behaves.

Now, an international team of scientists has attempted to harness the power of AI to glean more information about Sagittarius A* from data collected by the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT). Unlike some telescopes, the EHT doesn't reside in a single location. Rather, it is composed of several linked instruments scattered across the globe that work in tandem. The EHT uses long electromagnetic waves — up to a millimeter in length — to measure the radius of the photons surrounding a black hole.

However, this technique, known as very long baseline interferometry, is very susceptible to interference from water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere. This means it can be tough for researchers to make sense of the information the instruments collect.

"It is very difficult to deal with data from the Event Horizon Telescope," Michael Janssen, an astrophysicist at Radboud University in the Netherlands and co-author of the study, told Live Science. "A neural network is ideally suited to solve this problem."

    Related:

Janssen and his team trained an AI model on EHT data that had been previously discarded for being too noisy. In other words, there was too much atmospheric static to decipher information using classical techniques.

Through this AI technique, they generated a new image of Sagittarius A*'s structure, and their picture revealed some new features. For example, the black hole appears to be spinning at "almost top speed," the researchers said in a statement, and its rotational axis also seems to be pointing toward Earth. Their results were published this month in the journal Astronomy & Astrophysics.

Pinpointing the rotational speed of Sagittarius A* would give scientists clues about how radiation behaves around supermassive black holes and offer insight into the stability of the disk of matter around it.

However, not everyone is convinced that the new AI is totally accurate. According to Genzel, the relatively low quality of the data going into the model could have biased it in unexpected ways. As a result, the new image may be somewhat distorted, he said, and shouldn't be taken at face value.

In the future, Janssen and his team plan to apply their technique to the latest EHT data and measure it against real-world results. They hope this analysis will help to refine the model and improve future simulations.

Buga Sphere in Colombia Seen Again In China, June 5, 2025, UFO UAP Sighting News. Video!

Date of sighting: June 5, 2025
Location of sighting: Shayukou Reservoir, China
    Source:
Wow, this is getting really weird. Another Buga sphere has been recorded and released on Reddit today. As I have said before, this increase in close by orb sightings is building up to something very important and very big. The soul purpose of these orbs is to gather intelligence, data and record it, sending it back to its home world. These orbs also use telepathy...which is very powerful and can reach several miles due to its alien technology. Yes, they read your mind, your thoughts when focused. Thats why orbs sometimes come when you meditate calling them to you. It worked once for me, came two meters from me, grapefruit size. Why did this orb fly into the area where the huts were located at the end of the video? Many questions, but one thing is for sure, humans do not have this technology. It's 100% alien made.
Scott C. Waring - UFO Sightings Daily

    Eyewitness states:
"On June 5th, around 7 PM, I was walking and taking photos of the scenery on the shallow area of Shayukou Reservoir. At first, I saw a metallic spherical object flying eastward above the water surface from the west side of the reservoir. At that time, it seemed to hover occasionally before continuing to fly, and it disappeared behind a hill. I initially thought it was just a strange hydrogen balloon and didn’t pay much attention. Around 7:30 PM, as I was about to head back, the sphere reappeared in the south. There was no wind at all, and the evening was very quiet. Surprisingly, the sphere was able to fly at varying altitudes, hovering midway before continuing to fly.
I watched for a few minutes and became certain it was definitely not a balloon or a drone. I then started filming, but the object was strange—every time I filmed for a short while, it would move behind the trees. Whenever I thought it had completely disappeared, it would reappear. This continued intermittently for over ten minutes, during which I recorded three video clips. After the last clip, it disappeared completely.
In the following days, I saw a video online of a similar sphere flying over Colombia, which looked very much like what I saw. That’s when I decided to seek help online for identification."

Email report to scwaring @ yahoo.com

This just came in my email a few days ago. An eyewitness spotted an orb moving over the city. He describes it as grey metal of some sort and it looks similar in size and speed to the orb recorded and recovered in Colombia a few months ago called the "Buga sphere." It looks like spheres are coming closer and closer to observer human activities. This is strange, because usually they hover and hide within the clouds...moving in and out the edges of these clouds to record and observer. I call them cloud orbs, but to see them suddenly being recorded so frequently by others at such a low altitude...something big must be being planed by aliens on the horizon.
Scott C. Waring - UFO Sightings Daily

    Eyewitness states:
I captured this a little while ago. Not the best video quality, but you can see it flying in a very straight path. If it were a balloon, I would expect it to be more affected by the wind, which you can hear in the recording. There is a jump cut in the middle where I cut out about 10 seconds where it's not in frame. I got a better view before recording, and I'd estimate it to be roughly basketball sized or a bit larger. Seemingly made of metal or some other silver material.

Abductions by Fairies and Fairy Imposters

Fairy lore goes back centuries and can be found in a wide variety of diverse cultures. Although the modern image of fairies is that of benevolent glittering winged beings flitting and cavorting amongst the trees of a forest, the attitude towards fairies also varied greatly from tradition to tradition. In some accounts, fairies have a rather mischievous, even malevolent undertone, and in some lore, these entities are seen as being very real indeed.

An early account of a fairy abduction involves a young woman named Anne Jefferies, of the parish of St Teath, Cornwall, in England. Born in 1626 to a poor laborer, she had always been a bright and inquisitive girl with a wild and active imagination. One of the things that really captured her attention and became almost a sort of obsession for her were all of the various tales of fairies that were all around her, the lore of her area was steeped in such tales, but for her, this was more than mere stories. As a child, she would spend much of her time out in the woods trying to find the elusive entities and commune with them, and this habit would continue right up until she was a young woman, when she came to live as a servant in the family of a Mr. Moses Pitt and his wife Joan, where she did domestic duties and also served as a nanny and nurse to the couple’s two young children. At 19 years of age, she was still going out into the forest all of the time after her chores in her free time, looking for fairies and pixies, singing out to them in the hope of some sort of response to validate her belief that they were in fact real. Little did she know that her efforts were not completely in vain and that she was being watched.

According to the tale, one day Anne was out knitting at the Pitt home when she suddenly went into a convulsive fit that left her ill and bedridden. Several days passed with her in an unconscious state, and when she woke, she would have quite the tale to tell. She would relate to her family and those around her that she had been out there knitting when she had heard laughter and had looked around to find six diminutive men in green outfits and hats and with unusually bright eyes, led by one with a red feather in his cap, had crawled out of the bushes to approach her. The leader of the group had been unafraid of her, jumping into her palm and then up onto her shoulder to kiss her neck and hair, and before long all of them were crawling all over her. That was when one of them had put his hands over her eyes, after which she had felt a prickling sensation and then all had gone dark.

The next thing she remembered was waking to someone shouting “Tear! Tear!” and when she looked around herself, she saw that she was upon a grassy knoll in an unfamiliar, fantastical land of palaces, temples, and lush gardens, as well as azure lakes and a plentitude of brightly colored birds and other animals frolicking about. She was then dressed in an ornate, flowing silk dress and led to a palace, where there were fairy folk everywhere eating, drinking, and dancing. It would seem that she was there in this strange land for many days, during which time she fell in love with the fairy with the red feather in his hat. This made the other fairy men jealous, and they followed them around everywhere they went. One day, a mob of these fairy men would surround them, and as her fairy lover tried to defend her, Anne once again found herself losing consciousness, fading to black as she was immersed in a thrumming vibration that shook her entire body and a buzzing in her ears. The last thing she saw before everything went dark was her fairy lover lying wounded on the ground.

When she woke this time, she was back where she had started, the fairies nowhere to be seen. She was at the time disoriented, and when her family members found her, she was going into convulsive fits. Oddly, although many days had passed for Anne, it seemed as if no time had passed in the real world. For the next few weeks, she would be ill in bed, moving between unconsciousness and lucidity, and she would demonstrate some side effects of her bizarre ordeal. It seems as though she had developed certain clairvoyant abilities, such as reading the future and knowing who was at the door. She also said that she frequently saw the fairies lurking about, although no one else could, and she had also gained the ability to heal people by touching them, on one occasion curing a person’s injured leg just by laying hands upon it, and soon people were coming from far and wide coming to be healed by her hands. Such was her purported powers that she was kept as a prisoner at the house of the Mayor of Bodmin for a time on charges of being a witch, although never formally charged with witchcraft, which was what the whispered rumors were saying.

Interestingly, another power she apparently had was to go without food for long periods, yet remain healthy and vigorous, insisting that the fairies were keeping her fed. The case made quite a stir back in the time, and Anne herself would go on to marry a man named William Warren and fade from the spotlight, refusing to talk about her experiences or perform any more healing magic. The story would go on to be spoken of throughout the area ever since, with a letter from Moses Pitt, her benefactor’s son, to the Right Reverend Dr. Edward Fowler, Bishop of Gloucester setting it in stone. Anne Jefferies would die in 1698, taking any secrets to the grave with her and having avoided talking about her experience for most of her life. What was going on here? Is this just a folktale, or is there something more to it? It is unknown, and the case has become embedded in local myth without a real answer in sight. Was this actual fairies, interdimensional interlopers, or possibly an alien abduction? Or was it just a hoax and the ramblings of a misguided young woman, or even just pure folklore? There is no way to know, and whatever the case may be, it remains one of the weirder tales of fairies there is.

In some cases it seems that the targeted victim of a fairy kidnapping manages to escape. In 1839 there was a woman by the name of Annie McIntire, who seems to have just been saved by her brother from being abducted by the fairies. Her report would read:

Yes, by good luck my brother happened to be coming home from Carndonagh that night, and heard the fairies singing and saw them dancing round me in the wood at Carrowkeel. He had a book with him, and he threw it in among them. They then ran away."

One early and quite sinister account with alleged evil fairies happened in 1911, when Walter Yeeling Evans-Wentz published a book called The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries, in which there is interviewed 73-year-old Neil Colton, who claimed that as a youth in 1853, he had had a rather strange and frightening fairy encounter indeed. Colton claimed that one summer day he had been put with his brother and cousin gathering berries out in the countryside when they heard some inexplicable, ethereal music wafting through the air from beyond some nearby rocks. When the group went to investigate, they claimed that they had come across a band of fairies dancing in a clearing, and one of these little folk, a woman dressed in red, suddenly noticed they were being watched and rushed forward with decidedly aggressive intent.

The mysterious woman is claimed to have surged forth with a stick, or rush in her hand to strike the cousin across the cheek, after which she reached out to grab Colton’s brother’s arm to keep from falling. This sent the group scurrying away in a panic, and at some point, on their flight back to their home, Colton’s cousin collapsed to the ground seemingly dead. The girl’s father and a priest by the name of Father Ryan then came to the scene and Ryan said a prayer over her body, after which she slowly and groggily awoke. The priest would conclude that it had only been her grabbing Colton's brother that had kept her from being taken by the fairies “forever.”

In 1925, we also have a report of a woman who was “pixie-led” told by Mrs. G. Herbert, of Dartmoor, England. In 1925, Herbert was riding a horse on the moors of Dartmoor, England, on a fine sunny day in an area of the moors that she knew well when she suddenly and inexplicably became confused and lost her way. Oddly, she recognized her surroundings, but some persistent fog in her mind was befuddling her and preventing her from navigating any of it. She seemed to know that this was a result of fairies trying to lead her astray for the purpose of abducting her, so she tried a trick to protect herself, involving turning her pockets inside out. Apparently, this worked, and she was able to continue on her way without further incident.

Indeed, some of the strangest reports of fairy abductions come from those who have managed to come back to tell the tale. A very weird earlier report also has to do with what is called a “Fairy Circle,” a sort of portal between the land of the Fae and our reality, which in this account supposedly existed near the farm of Llwyn y Ffynon, near the Vale of Neath in South Wales. In 1755, two servants on the farm, Rhys ap Morgan, and Llewellyn Walter, were walking towards the farm one evening when Rhys stopped and told his companion he could hear music playing, although Llewellyn could hear nothing. Rhys told the Llewellyn to continue back home while he went to search for who was playing the music and talk to them. It was all very odd since only Rhys could hear the alleged music, and Llewellyn suspected that he was just trying to get out of work, finally just leaving his friend to head home.

When morning came, Rhys was nowhere to be seen, and so Llewellyn told his boss what had happened the previous night. The area was searched, and they even searched the nearby alehouse, but there was no sign of Rhys, and suspicion began to fall on Llewellyn that he had done something to him. This would continue for a full year before the story found its way to a local farmer who thought it might have to do with fairies. He asked Llewellyn to take him and some friends to the exact spot where Rhys had disappeared, and the farmer claimed that it was a fairy circle and that Rhys had been snatched away within it. At that moment Llewellyn could allegedly hear harp music that no one else could, and the farmer noticed that the servant’s foot was partly within the circle. When all present placed their feet within the circle, they found that they too could hear the music, and they could also see little child-sized figures dancing about along with the missing Rhys.

Llewellyn then grabbed his friend and pulled him out of the circle, after which Rhys said he wanted to dance a little more, as he had just gotten there. When asked what he meant, Rhys claimed to have been there for scarcely 5 minutes, even though a whole year had passed. Indeed, he had no inkling at all that he had been gone so long, and he also found himself unable to clearly remember his time with the little people in that circle. The next morning the circle was checked to find that it was trodden down and filled with tiny footprints the size of a person’s thumb. Oddly, after leaving the circle Rhys’ health would rapidly deteriorate, and he would die not long after. What happened here? Some of these cases can be quite harrowing, such as an account also written in the 1910 book The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries, by W.Y. Evans-Wentz. The case revolves around a witness who says that when he was a boy he was out with his brother and cousin when they were almost abducted by a group of fairies. He says of the bizarre experience:

“One day, just before sunset in midsummer, and I a boy then, my brother and cousin and myself were gathering bilberries (whortleberries) up by the rocks at the back of here, when all at once we heard music. We hurried round the rocks, and there we were within a few hundred feet of six or eight of the gentle folk, and they dancing. When they saw us, a little woman dressed all in red came running out from them towards us, and she struck my cousin across the face with what seemed to be a green rush. We ran for home as hard as we could, and when my cousin reached the house she fell dead. Father saddled a horse and went for Father Ryan. When Father Ryan arrived, he put a stole about his neck and began praying over my cousin and reading psalms and striking her with the stole; and in that way brought her back. He said if she had not caught hold of my brother, she would have been taken forever.

In the same book is the story of a man who tells of his frightening encounter with what he calls the “gentry,” another word for fairy. One day as he was out near a place called Ben Bulbin he had a curious encounter with a fairy that seemed about to abduct him. He says of the rather odd series of events:

When I was a young man I often used to go out in the mountains over there to fish for trout, or to hunt; and it was in January on a cold, dry day while carrying my gun that I and a friend with me, as we were walking around Ben Bulbin, saw one of the gentry for the first time. I knew who it was, for I had heard the gentry described ever since I could remember; and this one was dressed in blue with a head-dress adorned with what seemed to be frills. When he came up to us, he said to me in a sweet and silvery voice, "The seldomer you come to this mountain the better. A young lady here wants to take you away." Then he told us not to fire off our guns, because the gentry dislike being disturbed by the noise. And he seemed to be like a soldier of the gentry on guard. As we were leaving the mountains, he told us not to look back, and we didn't. Another time I was alone trout-fishing in nearly the same region when I heard a voice say, "It is ------ bare-footed and fishing." Then there came a whistle like music and a noise like the beating of a drum, and soon one of the gentry came and talked with me for half an hour. He said, "Your mother will die in eleven months, and do not let her die unanointed." And she did die within eleven months. As he was going away he warned me, "You must be in the house before sunset. Do not delay! Do not delay! They can do nothing to you until I get back in the castle." As I found out afterwards, he was going to take me, but hesitated because he did not want to leave my mother alone. After these warnings I was always afraid to go to the mountains, but lately I have been told I could go, if I took a friend with me.

In some cases people have been reported as being gone for a length of time, only to somehow find their way back, usually dazed, confused, and with no clear memory of what has happened to them. One report from The Fairy-Faith in Celtic Countries speaks of this and explains how something about what it calls “Fairyland” is a place in which time runs differently, and which has a way of preventing the abductee from being able to speak of it. It explains:

“Persons in a short trance-state of two or three days duration are said to be away with the fairies enjoying a festival. The festival may be very material in its nature, or it may be purely spiritual. Sometimes one may thus go to Faerie for an hour or two; or one may remain there for seven, fourteen, or twenty-one years. The mind of a person coming out of Fairyland is usually a blank as to what has been seen and done there. Another idea is that the person knows well enough all about Fairyland, but is prevented from communicating the knowledge. A certain woman of whom I knew said she had forgotten all about her experiences in Faerie, but a friend who heard her objected, and said she did remember, and wouldn't tell. A man may remain awake at night to watch one who has been to Fairyland to see if that one holds communication with the fairies. Others say in such a case that the fairies know you are on the alert, and will not be discovered.”

Similarly, we have a case that relates the bizarre ordeal of a woman who disappeared near a “Fairy Fort,” usually a mound, cairn of rocks or a boulder that draws in fairies and has great significance for them. The report reads:

Finally, as an example of this darker aspect to fairy encounters this account from the Irish folklore archives demonstrates the upset and the confusion which many feel before they can even speak about what they believe happened to them. In this case a family happen to live close to an ancient fairy fort and one morning as a woman is using a spinning wheel she noticed a tiny person standing by the door of the house. When the woman stood up and walked to the door to investigate she was taken away by a group of small people. When the family arrived home and noticed their aunt had vanished they searched everywhere in the vicinity but found no sign of her. They searched the drains, the ditches and even the fairy fort itself. It was on the third day of her disappearance that one of the family was walking by the fort when they saw the aunt kneeling next to it. She had vanished while holding a carving knife and this was stuck in the ground next to her. The aunt could not speak for days after her return and it was only then that the family learned of her fairy abduction.

In most cases the person is just sort of whisked away, and this often happens to the very young. Another case concerns a young woman by the name of Annie McIntire, also from Ireland. According to an account in a 1909 edition of the Preston Herald:

Annie McIntire, a venerable county Derry woman, has a sublime faith in the fairies. When being examined at a meeting of the Limavady Pension Committee as to her age, she fixed the time of her birth as Hallowe’en in 1839 giving for her recollection of the fact the startling reason that she had been ‘stolen by the fairies’. In reply to the chairman the woman said she was as certain of her abduction by the fairies as the she was alive. After carrying off the infant, she continued, the ‘wee people’ indulged in revels and dancing, in the wood at Carrowkeel, which were fortunately overheard by her brother when returning from Carndomagh. The brother had a book [a Bible? difficult to see the fairies being frightened off by a penny dreadful], which he threw into the wood, and scattered the fairies when he lifted his baby sister in his arms and carried her back in triumph. Further questioned the witness said her mother relatives were overjoyed at her safe return and gave themselves up to feasting and merriment. This was the only incident by which witness was able to determine her age, of which no record appeared in the census of 1841 or that of 1851.”

Fairies have supposedly displayed an alarming habit of kidnapping human beings, in particular babies, and there are many such reports. One account listed on the Fairyist website details the report of a woman who in 1844 gave birth to a baby. Some time later, the infant was lying in bed with the mother and father when the mother awoke to find the baby gone. She would soon find that it had been taken by the Fairy-folk, and the report would say of the incident thus:

Uttering an exclamation of fear, lest the fairies (or feriers) should have taken the child, she jumped out of bed, and there sure enough a number of the little sandy things had got the baby at the foot of the bed and were undressing it. They fled away through a hole in the floor, laughing as if they shrieked, and, snatching up her child, on examination she found that they had laid all the pins head to head as they took them out of the dress. For months afterwards she always slept with the child between herself and husband, and used carefully to pin it by its bed clothes to the pillow and sheets that it might not be snatched hastily away. This happened in the old house which stood where the new one now stands on the south side of the vicarage gate. A woman, as she heard tell, had a child changed, and one, a poor thing, left in his place, but she was very kind to it, and every morning on getting up she found a small piece of money in her pocket. My informant firmly believes in their existence, and wonders how it is that of late years no such things have been seen.”

Indeed babies are traditionally prime targets for fairies, and to protect their infants people would often sprinkle them with holy water or hang bars or rods of iron over their cribs, as iron was said to ward fairies off, with even adults often carrying around iron when venturing into a fairy’s territory. This was among many precautions mothers would take to protect both themselves and their babies from fairies. 20th-century fairy researcher W.Y. Evans-Wentz said of this:

The fairies were wont to take away infants and their mothers, and many precautions were taken to safeguard them till purification and baptism took place, when the fairy power became ineffective. Placing iron about the bed, burning leather in the room, giving mother and child the milk of a cow which had eaten of the mothan, pearl-wort (Pinguicula vulgaris), a plant of virtue, and similar means were taken to ensure their safety. If the watching-women neglected these precautions, the mother or child or both were spirited away to the fairy bower."

This does not seem to always work, though, and in another account we have a case from the site Irish Central from a witness called “Grace.” She writes:

Don’t believe in Fairy abductions? My Granny would have a sit down with you and soon set you straight. From the very day of her birth, Granny’s parents carefully lay their iron fire-poker across the basket she slept in. They were believer’s you see, in the Good People. Well, wasn’t everyone back then? But times have changed and now there are fewer who believe. Who knows, maybe the Good People like it that way. My Granny thinks so and she says she should know.

"I’ve lived one foot in our world and the other foot in theirs” so she says. You see, when Granny was but a few months old, the Good People tried to steal her away. Without a drop of whiskey on her breath, she’ll tell you that she was asleep in her wee basket when there was a commotion out back of her parent’s cottage. They lived in County Limerick at that time, it was a farm, with mainly sheep she says, and anyway, all hell had broken loose tween sheep and dogs and Granny’s Mam and Pop upped and ran outside to see the damage. As it happened, there was nothing to see, nothing at all. It had been nothing but bluster, for the sheep and dogs were only calm and dozey. Which was strange in itself.

Granny’s Mam was pretty canny, and she hightailed it back to the cottage to find Granny, still wrapped tight in her blanket, laying at the threshold at the front door. Fast asleep. Across the room from her basket. When she was older, Granny was told by her parents that the Good People had distracted them so they could steal her away for she was ‘touched’, having one blue eye and one green you see. Only they couldn’t get her out from the cottage on account she’d been baptized. Granny will tell you the iron bar did nothing to keep the Good People from reaching in her basket and what's more, it wasn’t true, her being baptized. It’s what her parents told anyone who asked, but in truth, she was yet to be baptized and only a day or two after the ‘visit’ as Granny calls it, her parents took her on the quiet to the Priest for to get the job done.

So we can only guess that the Good People dropped Granny to the ground when they heard her Mam approaching. I think Granny enjoys telling the story and wears it as a kind of badge actually. It is remarked by many who have known Granny that she has lived a charmed life on account of her touch by the Good People. There could be something to that, she is nearing 100 years old after all and as bright and feisty as ever before.”

There are also some traditions of fairy abductions in which the little folk were said to leave behind an entity called a "changeling," which was a fairy imposter who merely looked like the person who had been abducted to act like a placeholder and take the abductee's place. In the lore of numerous countries in Europe and beyond, a changeling was more or less a copy of a child left by usually fairies, but sometimes elves, trolls, or some other spirit, depending on the culture, to replace a human child that they abducted. The fairies would sneak into homes, spirit away the human child, and leave an imitation version, a changeling, in its place, and this would be done for several different reasons, depending on the lore of a specific region. Sometimes it was because fairies coveted human children and wanted one for themselves, and indeed some human children were said to live out the rest of their days in the fairy realm. On other occasions, it was to take a human child as a slave or servant, out of malice or revenge, or even as no more than a prank. Fairies might also take a human child if they thought they weren’t being cared for properly, or even because the changeling itself had requested to grow up in the human world, for instance, some older fairies supposedly requested to be made into changelings in order to become young again and start life anew in the human world. The children taken were almost without fail the most beautiful, which is why in some traditions, such as those of Ireland, it was seen as bad luck to look at a baby with envy or praise its beauty too much because this was thought to draw the fairies’ attention to it and make the child a target.

Although they looked indistinguishable from a human child, once a child was replaced by a changeling there were varying ways to tell if they were an imposter, again depending on the region. In many traditions, changeling children were likely to look pale and sickly, and may not grow up to be a normal size. They were often said to have long teeth, scraggly hair, or some hidden physical deformity or birth defect, such as extra toes. Changelings were said to have enormous appetites, eating far more than a normal human child of their size would, and they were also typically said to be more intelligent than a normal human child of their age. It was also said that they would demonstrate skills or abilities that their human doppelganger had not possessed, with psychic abilities often mentioned. They were often said to have an uncanny “offness” about their outward appearance, which was hard to put one’s finger on but would be unsettling to all who looked at them. Other traditions speak of the changeling becoming uglier with age. For instance, in Wales, it was believed that the changeling would start out beautiful, but become ever more hideous as it grew up. People around the changeling child might also suffer physical effects, such as being unable to move their limbs, which is called being 'fairy-struck.' Changeling children were also commonly described as acting very oddly, as well as never smiling or laughing when people were watching, although they would do so when they thought they were alone, and many times changelings were mute or spoke very little. The English poet and topographer George Waldron, who lived in the Isle of Man during the early 18th century, would claim to have seen a changeling child, and described it as follows:

Nothing under heaven could have a more beautiful face; but though between five and six years old, and seemingly healthy, he was so far from being able to walk, or stand, that he could not so much as move any one joint; his limbs were vastly long for his age, but smaller than an infant's of six months; his complexion was perfectly delicate, and he had the finest hair in the world; he never spoke, nor cried, ate scarcely anything, and was very seldom seen to smile, but if any one called him a fairy-elf, he would frown and fix his eyes so earnestly on those who said it, as if he would look them through. His mother, or at least his supposed mother, being very poor, frequently went out a-charing, and left him a whole day together. The neighbours, out of curiosity, have often looked in at the window to see how he behaved when alone, which, whenever they did, they were sure to find him laughing and in the utmost delight. This made them judge that he was not without company more pleasing to him than any mortal's could be; and what made this conjecture seem the more reasonable was, that if he were left ever so dirty, the woman at her return saw him with a clean face, and his hair combed with the utmost exactness and nicety.

For a long time, changelings were seen as a very real threat, with many families constantly on guard against their child being abducted and replaced by these doppelgangers, and as with many other supernatural creatures, there were various methods to keep the changelings away. A common theme in many regions was the use of iron, thought to have a powerful repelling effect against the creatures, with iron objects such as knives and scissors left around the child’s cot to keep them at bay. Other ways included constantly watching the child, laying the father’s clothes on the bed, keeping a fire constantly lit in the room, baptizing the child, and other strange customs such as placing urine around the bed. Most traditions also feature various charms, amulets, herbs, or salves that could be used to keep changelings away as well, but despite all of these precautions, there was never any certain guarantee that a child wouldn’t be taken and replaced by the fairies.

In almost every tradition of changelings, they were not seen as a desirable or benevolent presence, mischievous at best and portents of misfortune, death, and ruin at worst. For this reason, if a changeling was spotted in a family, besides the parents just wanting their child back, it was in their best interest to get rid of it before problems came their way, and there were various traditions for how to do this. In many countries, it was thought that torturing a changeling until it laughed would do the trick, causing it to leave and bring the human child back. In Ireland, it was thought that throwing the changeling into a fireplace would cause it to jump up the chimney and return the human child. Indeed, many countries had the tradition of using fire or otherwise heating the changeling, such as in an oven in order to banish it. They could also be beaten and mistreated to force them to admit their true nature. In other traditions, it was enough to simply trick the changeling into speaking or laughing by any means necessary, and there were certain rituals that could be carried out as well. If a family was lucky, the changeling would just get bored and go away on its own, although there were no guarantees that the human child it had replaced would ever be returned.

Yet, even with all of these deterrents and weapons against the changeling threat, many families felt compelled to care for it simply because they were afraid that something bad would happen to their real child if they did not. On occasion, this could lead to the thankful changeling giving back the human child as a reward for their kindness, but usually, the changeling would remain. In some cases, the changeling would be raised as the family’s child through to adulthood, with the changeling sometimes even forgetting what they really were and believing themselves to be human. In this case, the human child that they had replaced would live with the fairies forever, and would sometimes themselves forget that they had ever been human at all. There are many historical tales of changelings that grew up in human society. King Charles I of England (1600 - 1649) was reportedly rumored to have been a changeling, and there is also the tale of a woman named Bridget Cleary, who was murdered by her husband in 1895 when he suspected her of being a changeling.

In this particular case from March of 1895, a young woman by the name of Bridget Cleary disappeared in Ireland, and after an extensive search for the woman her body was finally found not far from her home. Police would finger her husband Michael Cleary, her father Patrick Boland, her aunt Mary Kennedy, her cousins Patrick, William, James and Michael Kennedy, and John Dunne as the killers, but under questioning they would weave a very strange tale indeed. According to them, the real Bridgette had in fact been abducted by fairies, who had then left behind a changeling in her place, a fact they uncovered when the creature became very ill for no reason. They then tied up the changeling and tortured it to find out where the real Bridgette had been taken to, but it died from its injuries. According to them, the police had found the changeling’s body and not that of the real Bridgette. It was a colorful story, but the police weren’t buying it and they were charged with murder.

The stories of changelings reverberate throughout the lore of many European countries, including the United Kingdom, Scandinavia, Poland, Spain, and others, and similar tales stretch out to Africa, Asia, and the Middle East. Why is it that such similar stories have managed to worm their way into these far-flung lands? One of the main theories in modern times is that this was a way of explaining and dealing with infants born with birth defects, or deformed, developmentally disabled, or neurodivergent children, as well as those with autism. In an age when there was little to medically or scientifically explain such things, this could have perhaps been a way to rationalize such children. The parents would see these defects and convince themselves that this couldn’t possibly be their child, but rather an imposter left by supernatural forces. It is horrifying in a sense, as such folklore and beliefs likely led to countless instances of innocent children being mistreated, tortured, abandoned, or even killed. We may never truly know how such stories evolved, or why they remain so eerily similar across geographical and cultural divides, but they certainly play into every parent's fears that something might happen to their child, and remain a curious area of strange lore with deep roots in mystery.

Here we have looked at just a small selection of the many accounts through the ages of fairies with decidedly dark agendas. Is there any truth to the tales or are they strictly mythical constructs confined to spooky lore and legend? Whatever the case may be, it all adds extra layers to the phenomenon of fairies and shows that they are not always of the kind and benevolent type.

UFOs are at risk of going 'down the paranormal rabbit hole', expert warns - as bombshell report reveals Pentagon planted myths

UFOs are at risk of 'going down the paranormal rabbit hole', an expert has warned in wake of a bombshell report by the Wall Street Journal.

The report revealed that UFO conspiracies were fuelled by the Pentagon in a bid to conceal a classified weapons programme.

According to the 2024 US Department of Defense (DOD) review, the government conducted a deliberate disinformation campaign during the Cold War era, going so far as to distribute fake photos of flying saucers to residents.

Following the release of the report, Nick Pope, who worked on the MoD's UFO desk for three years from 1991, claims that some UFO investigators are introducing 'too much religiosity' into their theories.

In a post on X, Mr Pope wrote: 'The subject of UAP has gone from fringe to mainstream.

    'Congress is engaged.

'We risk losing this if we go down the paranormal rabbit hole, or introduce too much religiosity or spirituality into the narrative.

'Let's keep the focus on defense, national security and safety of flight.'

Over the last few years, there has been growing interest at the highest levels of US politics in the topic of UFOs and UFO sightings.

Members of Congress, largely coming from the Republican Party, have formed a caucus to examine what they call 'unidentified anomalous phenomena' or 'UAPs'.

In 2023, this culminated in a major congressional hearing in which former US officials testified to the existence of a secret UFO recovery programme.

David Grusch, who led the analysis of UAP within a US defence agency, claimed that the government had taken possession of alien craft and 'biologics'.

However, UFOs' growing credibility now risks taking a serious blow as it emerges that a number of UFO theories might have been deliberately started by the Pentagon itself.

The new claims of a secret weapons cover-up come from a report by the All-domain Anomaly Resolution Office (AARO) - a congressional task force within the DOD created to investigate persistent rumours of secret government projects involving alien technology.

Sean Kirkpatrick, the first director of the AARO, was appointed by the government in 2022 to investigate and make sense of the countless UFO theories swirling through public and military channels.

Investigating UFO reports dating back to 1945, AARO discovered several cases where high-ranking military officials deliberately misled the public and their colleagues.

The subject of UFOs has recently gained credibility, culminating in a series of Congressional Hearings in 2023 in which whistleblowers testified that the US has a secret UFO retrieval programme

Recent reports suggest that the Pentagon deliberately fanned the flames of UFO conspiracies and gave doctored images to members of the public and members of the military to cover up a secret weapons programme. Pictured: The famous 'Tic Tac' UFO video

Mr Kirkpatrick told the Wall Street Journal he had met a number of former Air Force members who claimed to have been briefed on a project called 'Yankee Blue'.

For decades, some newly recruited officers were given a picture which appeared to show a flying saucer and were told that they were part of a programme called Yankee Blue which was responsible for reverse-engineering the technology.

However, the picture was a fake and there was such a reverse-engineering programme.

Instead, Yankee Blue appears to have been a bizarre hazing ritual or loyalty test for new recruits into the Air Force.

And even decades later, news that Yankee Blue was fake stunned the now-retired servicemen.

It was not until 2023 did the defence secretary's office sent a memo out across the service ordering the practice to stop immediately.

Kirkpatrick told then President's director of national intelligence, Avril Haines, who was also stunned.

Haines was said to have pressed the issue, questioning how the hazing could have carried on without being stopped.

According to the 2024 US Department of Defense (DOD) review, the Pentagon (pictured) conducted a deliberate disinformation campaign during the Cold War era, going so far as to distribute fake photos of flying saucers to residents.

According to the 2024 US Department of Defense (DOD) review, the Pentagon (pictured) conducted a deliberate disinformation campaign during the Cold War era, going so far as to distribute fake photos of flying saucers to residents.

The official responded: 'Ma'am, we know it went on for decades. We are talking about hundreds and hundreds of people. These men signed NDAs. They thought it was real.'

Mr Pope told MailOnline: 'The idea that governments have faked UFO narratives so as to distract people from black project technologies isn't new.

'It doesn't surprise me that the practice continues, or that other false narratives have been created, perhaps as loyalty tests, to see if people leak them, or even as practical jokes.'

These findings are particularly critical for UFO researchers since they threaten to cast doubt over recent high-profile testimony given before Congress.

For example, Mike Gold, who served on NASA's independent UAP study team in October 2022, told Congress that 'UAPs should be taken seriously and researched accordingly.'

If it is true that UFO sightings are being manufactured by the intelligence community, then it could mean this testimony can no longer be relied on.

Mr Pope adds: 'At some of the public sessions, Intelligence Community insiders have testified as to the reality of legacy Intelligence Community programmes relating to crash retrievals and reverse engineering, unequivocally stating that the U.S. government is in possession of hardware and bodies of a non-human intelligence.

'Congress urgently now needs to ask: are these statements true, were the witnesses taken in by these false narratives, or were they complicit in creating and spreading such narratives?'

Despite this new information, UFO advocates such as Luiz Elizondo (pictured) have doubled down on their beliefs. Mr Elizondo appeared to insinuate that the recent investigation was, itself, part of a conspiracy to hide the truth about UFOs

Despite this new information, UFO advocates such as Luiz Elizondo (pictured) have doubled down on their beliefs. Mr Elizondo appeared to insinuate that the recent investigation was, itself, part of a conspiracy to hide the truth about UFOs

As these reports rattle many UFO believers, Mr Pope insists that it is key for those in favour of UFO disclosure to 'push narratives that compete with the religious/spiritual one'.

Mr Pope wrote: 'Let's keep the focus on defense, national security and safety of flight.'

His comments come in response to a growing number of UFO supporters who argue that aliens are actually angels or other supernatural creatures.

For example, Luis Elizondo, one of the leading UFO whistleblowers and disclosure advocates, has claimed that he psychically transformed into an angel to scare terrorists as part of a secret Pentagon programme.

Yet despite the Wall Street Journal's revelations and Mr Pope's appeal to stick to the facts, many UFO believers have only entrenched themselves deeper in conspiracy theories.

Speaking on the Good Trouble Show podcast, Mr Elizondo said: 'The absurdity of the WSJ article is not only a disingenuous piece, it appears to be well orchestrated with the usual players in the DoD [Department of Defence].'

Likewise, commenters on the popular r/UFO Reddit page shared their belief that the WSJ investigation must be another conspiracy.

One commenter wrote: 'The fact they are claiming this is totally absurd but it’s important to see why they are doing it. WSJ is being fed this info from Pentagon sources. Why? What is their angle?'

UFO believers are concerned that these findings could be used to undermine the testimony of several whistleblowers given before Congress in 2023. This has led to wild speculation that the investigation itself was a 'psy-op' from the Pentagon to discredit UFO believers

Experts say that conspiracy theories are 'sticky', meaning that believers cannot give them up easily even when faced with contradictory evidence

Experts say that conspiracy theories are 'sticky', meaning that believers cannot give them up easily even when faced with contradictory evidence

However, psychologists say that this reaction to the sudden release of new information is normal for conspiracy theorists.

    article image

Dr Daniel Jolley, an expert on the psychology of conspiracy theories from the University of Nottingham, told MailOnline: 'Conspiracy beliefs can be very “sticky” because they’re often tied to people’s identity and worldview.

'When someone invests in a conspiracy belief, it becomes part of how they make sense of the world and themselves.

New evidence that contradicts those beliefs can be dismissed or rationalised away since accepting it might threaten deeply held assumptions and create psychological discomfort.'

This means that the suggestion that UFO myths were created as a disinformation campaign is unlikely to affect the deeply held beliefs of those who already think UFOs are real.

WHAT MAKES SOMEONE BELIEVE IN CONSPIRACY THEORIES?

Over the course of three online-based studies, researchers at the University of Kent showed strong links between the belief in conspiracy theories and certain psychological traits.

Narcissism and self-esteem levels have a large impact on a persons belief in conspiracy theories.

The results showed that people who rated highly on the narcissism scale and who had low self-esteem were more likely to be conspiracy believers.

However, while low self-esteem, narcissism and belief in conspiracies are strongly linked, it is not clear that one - or a combination - causes the other.

But it hints at an interesting new angle to the world of conspiracy and those who reinforce belief.

There are widely believed to be three main reasons as to why people believe in conspiracy theories.

    * The desire for understanding and certainty - Seeking explanations for events is a natural human desire.

    * The desire for control and security - Conspiracy theories can give their believers a sense of control and security.

    * The desire to maintain a positive self-image - People who feel socially marginalised are more likely to believe in conspiracy theories and it gives them a sense of worth in the UFO community.

These three things tie in with the previously stated qualities and combine to create an avid conspiracy theorist.

The first ever images of the sun's south pole have been snapped by satellite launched by the European Space Agency (ESA).

Until now, every image of the sun has been taken from straight on, along the 'elliptical plane' - the flat disk on which all planets orbit.

But by tilting its orbit to 17 degrees below the equator, the ESA's solar orbiter has managed to reveal a side of our home star that has never been seen before.

Soon, the probe will tilt its orbit lower for an even better view - meaning the best images are yet to come.

By meeting up with Venus once every few orbits, the orbiter can use the planet's gravity to shift and tilt its orbit.

This has already allowed the probe to make some exciting new discoveries about the sun, and the researchers behind the project say that revelations are on the way.

Dr Hamish Reid, an astronomer at UCL and UK co-investigator on the orbiter's Extreme Ultraviolet Imager, told MailOnline: 'This moment is very significant; we have been waiting decades since we first started observing the Sun to catch a glimpse of the poles.

'This really is the missing piece of the puzzle in our understanding of the solar magnetic field.'

The European Space Agency has captured the first ever image of the sun's south pole, a region normally hidden from all planets and modern satellites in the solar system

The Solar Orbiter has already used three of its 10 instruments to make new measurements of the sun's south pole, revealing the mechanisms that produce space weather

Solar Orbiter used three instruments to capture images of the sun's hidden south pole, each looking at the sun in a different way.

The Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) was used to study the sun in visible light and map the surface magnetic field.

The Extreme Ultraviolet Imager (EUI) captures ultraviolet light to reveal million-degree charged gas in the Sun's outer atmosphere.

Meanwhile the Spectral Imaging of the Coronal Environment (SPICE) instrument reveals the layers of the sun's atmosphere by capturing light from different temperatures of charged gas.

Dr Sami Solanki, of the Max Planck Institute for Solar System Research, says: 'We didn't know what exactly to expect from these first observations – the Sun's poles are literally terra incognita.'

Already, these observations are helping scientists understand how the sun's ever-changing weather could impact Earth.

The sun's magnetic poles flip roughly once every 11 years in a process known as the solar cycle.

This flip coincides with a period of massively increased activity known as the solar maximum, sending huge solar flares and waves of ejected material hurtling towards Earth.

Using its magnetic sensors, the probe has revealed that the sun's magnetic fields are a mess at the moment. The south pole (pictured) currently has areas of north (red) and south (blue) polarity magnetic fields

While these events can have serious consequences for our planet's electronics and communications systems, we don't know enough about the sun's magnetic poles to predict exactly when a solar maximum will occur.

Professor Lucie Green, an astronomer at UCL and co-investigator on the EUI, says: 'Being able to observe the poles is vital for understanding how the Sun's magnetic field operates on a global scale, leading to an 11-year cycle in the Sun's activity.'

One of the Solar Orbiters' first observations is that the magnetic fields at the sun's south pole are currently in a state of disarray.

A normal bar magnet will have a clear north and south pole, but the sun's south pole currently has both north and south magnetic fields present.

This only happens for a short time during the solar maximum right after the magnetic poles flip.

After the flip, the polarity will slowly build up over the next five years to create clear north and south poles, bringing the sun to its most stable period known as a solar minimum.

Scientists still don't fully understand how this build-up process happens, but the Solar Orbiters' new position should help them find out.

Professor Green says: 'We'll see previously unobserved high-latitude flows that carry magnetic elements to the polar regions, and in doing so sow the fundamental seeds for the next solar cycle.'

This period of messy solar activity coincides with the 'solar maximum', a short period during which the sun's magnetic poles flip. This is the period in which Earth is hit with the most solar flares and solar wind

This period of messy solar activity coincides with the 'solar maximum', a short period during which the sun's magnetic poles flip. This is the period in which Earth is hit with the most solar flares and solar wind

In addition to capturing the changing magnetic fields, the Solar Orbiter has captured the first look inside the south pole's different layers.

The SPICE instrument measures the light, or spectral lines, sent out by specific chemicals when they are heated to known temperatures.

By tracking these spectral lines, the Solar Orbiter can work out how fast clumps of solar material are moving in a process called 'Doppler measurement'.

Tracking how these particles move between the sun's layers is vitally important since it can reveal how this material is flung out of the sun in the form of solar wind.

Solar wind is responsible for triggering the Northern Lights but can also damage satellites in orbit, disrupt power grids on land, and bathe astronauts in dangerous radiation.

Having now dropped below the equator, the Solar Orbiter could now help scientists understand this disruptive phenomenon.

aDr Frédéric Auchère, an astronomer from the University of Paris-Saclay and SPICE team leader, says: 'Doppler measurements of solar wind setting off from the Sun by current and past space missions have been hampered by the grazing view of the solar poles.

'Measurements from high latitudes, now possible with Solar Orbiter, will be a revolution in solar physics.'

Scientists have used the Solar Orbiter to look at how particles move through the sun's layers. This image shows the light sent out by carbon particles heated to 32,000 °C

However, these are just the very first observations and scientists say that more measurements and even more discoveries are yet to come.

Large parts of the data from the first images still need to be analysed, with the full dataset expected to arrive back on Earth by October this year.

    article image

In the years to come, all ten of the Solar Orbiter's instruments will collect vast quantities of data as further meet-ups with Venus shift the craft to an even more tilted orbit.

Eventually, the Solar Orbiter will hit an angle of 33 degrees below the equator, giving an extremely clear view of the sun's southern pole.

Dr Daniel Müller, ESA's Solar Orbiter project scientist, says: 'This is just the first step of Solar Orbiter's 'stairway to heaven'. In the coming years, the spacecraft will climb further out of the ecliptic plane for ever better views of the Sun's polar regions.

'These data will transform our understanding of the Sun's magnetic field, the solar wind, and solar activity.'

Studying the depths of the universe usually involves billions of pounds of supercomputers, satellites, and telescopes.

But a team of scientists has now made it possible for you to explore the cosmos from the comfort of your own home.

Their incredible interactive map, dubbed COSMOS-Web, lets you scroll through almost 800,000 galaxies and peer back as far as 13.5 billion years.

That means looking back through 98 per cent of cosmic time almost to the birth of the universe 13.8 billion years ago.

Covering an area of sky about the same size as three full moons, this image combines more than 10,000 photographs from the James Webb Space Telescope.

Professor Caitlin Casey, an astronomer at UC Santa Barbara who co-led the COSMOS collaboration, said: 'Our goal was to construct this deep field of space on a physical scale that far exceeded anything that had been done before.

'If you had a printout of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field on a standard piece of paper, our image would be slightly larger than a 13-foot by 13-foot-wide mural, at the same depth.

    'So it's really strikingly large.'

Scientists have created an incredible interactive map of the universe, allowing you to scroll through over 800,000 galaxies

The COSMOS-Web map combines over 10,000 images from the James Webb Space Telescope to create the largest deep-field map of the universe ever created. This image shows how much detail can be revealed as you zoom in

While the data for this map has existed for a while, it was previously in a raw form that needed expert analysis and a supercomputer to interpret.

But over the last two years, an international team of scientists has worked to turn the data behind the largest map of the universe into something that anyone can use.

In the stunning interactive map, at this link, you can zoom out to see hundreds of thousands of galaxies stretch across the sky or zoom in to reveal amazing details.

Using the tools included in the map you can even dive deeper into the data by switching between different imaging tools.

To learn even more, turn on catalogues using the tabs on the left-hand side and click on any galaxy to bring up a vast trove of data.

The researchers have made this available to the public in the hopes that more people will be able to help dig into the data and unpick some of the universe's most puzzling questions.

Professor Casey says: 'The best science is really done when everyone thinks about the same data set differently.

'It's not just for one group of people to figure out the mysteries.'

Already, this enormous set of data is helping scientists understand how galaxies formed at the beginning of time and challenging some basic assumptions in astronomy.

Based on data from the Hubble Space Telescope, astronomers expected galaxies to be extremely rare in the first 500 million years.

This is because it takes a long time for stars to form under gravity and get pulled together into larger structures.

But when the researchers looked back at the most distant reaches of the universe, they found there were about 10 times more galaxies than they expected to find.

Professor Casey says: 'Since the telescope turned on we've been wondering 'Are these JWST datasets breaking the cosmological model?'

'Because the universe was producing too much light too early; it had only about 400 million years to form something like a billion solar masses of stars. We just do not know how to make that happen.'

The map is so much more detailed than earlier efforts because of the size of the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).

    While Hubble's main light-collecting was 7ft 10 inches (2.4m) across, the JWST's is a staggering 21ft (6.5m) wide.

That allows the telescope to collect the faintest traces of light coming from the furthest reaches of the galaxy.

Dr Jeyhan Kartaltepe, associate professor at the Rochester Institute of Technology who co-leads COSMOS-Web, says: 'The sensitivity of JWST lets us see much fainter and more distant galaxies than ever before, so we're able to find galaxies in the very early universe and study their properties in detail.'

Going forward the team behind COSMOS-Web still has a lot more work to do in order to unpack all the data hidden in the map.

They plan to use the JWST spectrographic tools to identify the oldest galaxies in the image and learn more about the chemistry of these early stars.

THE BIG BANG THEORY DESCRIBES THE BEGINNING AND EVOLUTION OF THE UNIVERSE

The Big Bang Theory is a cosmological model, a theory used to describe the beginning and the evolution of our universe.

It says that the universe was in a very hot and dense state before it started to expand 13,7 billion years ago.

This theory is based on fundamental observations.

In 1920, Hubble observed that the distance between galaxies was increasing everywhere in the universe.

The Big Bang Theory is a cosmological model, a theory used to describe the beginning and the evolution of our universe, based on observations - including the cosmic background radiation (pictured), which is a like a fossil of radiation emitted during the beginning of the universe, when it was hot and dense

The Big Bang Theory is a cosmological model, a theory used to describe the beginning and the evolution of our universe, based on observations - including the cosmic background radiation (pictured), which is a like a fossil of radiation emitted during the beginning of the universe, when it was hot and dense

This means that galaxies had to be closer to each other in the past.

In 1964, Wilson and Penzias discovered the cosmic background radiation, which is a like a fossil of radiation emitted during the beginning of the universe, when it was hot and dense.

The cosmic background radiation is observable everywhere in the universe.

The composition of the universe - that is, the the number of atoms of different elements -  is consistent with the Big Bang Theory.

So far, this theory is the only one that can explain why we observe an abundance of primordial elements in the universe.

Scientists have found the source of a strange form of communication in the ocean that they say could help them locate extraterrestrial life in space.

Researchers from the SETI Institute (Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence) revealed that large 'smoke ring-like' bubbles coming from underwater were created by humpback whales, which researchers believe is their way of greeting nearby humans.

It's the first time scientists have seen whales sending out these unique rings while interacting with people in the wild, and the SETI team said they show an intentional attempt to get the attention of humans - just like saying hello.

Until now, the bubble rings have only been seen while humpbacks were gathering prey and when males were making a trail of bubble rings to attract a mate.

Researchers said it's quite possible whales have been trying to communicate with people for years but the phenomenon hasn't been studied until now.

The team added that these bubble rings could help researchers refine their search for an alien intelligence in the cosmos, opening a door to spotting unusual signals from space that we normally wouldn't think are meant for humans.

Study co-lead author Dr Fred Sharpe from the University of California-Davis said: 'They are blowing bubble rings in our direction in an apparent attempt to playfully interact, observe our response, and/or engage in some form of communication.'

Now, the institute's WhaleSETI team is studying if this could be a sign that intelligent marine animals are trying to talk to humans, in the same way that aliens from a distant ocean may try to contact Earth.

The SETI Institute is a nonprofit research organization dedicated to searching for extraterrestrial intelligence and studying the origins and nature of life in the universe

Scientists analyzed 12 bubble ring episodes that involved 11 different humpback whales between 2019 and 2023 in the wild.

These rare reports came from naturalists, citizen scientists, and researchers who revealed what they saw on social media, during interviews, or at scientific conferences.

In total, the witnesses spotted 39 bubble rings from whale-watching boats, research vessels, private ships, and airplanes.

The study, published in Marine Mammal Science, found that bubble rings were produced in three main contexts: feeding, resting, and curiosity - which was the most common purpose.

There were nine instances of humpback whales blowing bubble rings near boats and swimmers.

The whales in these cases were consistently seen approaching boats and people in the water without any signs of aggression, splashing their tails and spraying water out of their blowholes.

The researchers said this was a clear sign that the humpbacks were relaxed and trying to be playful, leading them to feel comfortable communicating with the humans near them.

SETI researchers documented 12 cases of humpback whale bubble ring, with 9 of them occurring while whales were playfully interacting with people on boats or swimming nearby

SETI researchers documented 12 cases of humpback whale bubble ring, with 9 of them occurring while whales were playfully interacting with people on boats or swimming nearby

They typically let out bubble rings from their blowholes that were six to 10 feet in diameter, which floated straight up and look like a smoke ring when they reached the ocean surface.

The rings were often aimed right at humans and were paired with other playful behaviors like circling the boats or peeking at swimmers.

The humpbacks didn't show anger or fear and lingered after sending out the bubble ring, almost as if waiting for the people to “answer” their greeting.

Scientists concluded that these rings might be a whale’s way of saying, “Hey, let’s chat!” or play a game to see how we react, much like a child blowing bubbles to get our attention.

The team from SETI said this never-before-seen behavior among humpback whales further supports the assumption that intelligent extraterrestrial life might also seek contact with humans.

SETI Institute scientist and study co-author Dr Laurance Doyle said: 'This important assumption is certainly supported by the independent evolution of curious behavior in humpback whales.'

Humpback whales have been a constant resource in SETI's search for alien life, with researchers using them as a model of intelligent, non-human creatures which may be living on distant ocean worlds

By studying these whales and their new interactions with people as an example of non-human intelligence, WhaleSETI researchers are creating ways of finding and translating potential signals found in space.

The institute suggested that bubble rings could be a deliberate attempt by whales to talk with humans they considered peaceful, not just aimless play.

According to SETI, this would mimic how extraterrestrials might target satellite receivers on Earth if they wanted to contact humanity.

This isn't the first time the WhaleSETI team has connected the behavior of humpbacks to aliens.

In 2023, scientists engaged in a 20-minute 'conversation' with a humpback whale named Twain in Alaska.

They played whale calls for her and Twain responded with similar calls, matching the timing like a back-and-forth chat.

That study showed whales can intentionally interact with humans, helping SETI scientists understand the non-human intelligences they may find in space.

'By integrating our findings into the broader context of Drake's Equation, we aspire to advance our understanding of the factors influencing the emergence of communicative intelligence in extraterrestrial civilizations,' the WhaleSETI team explained in a statement.

Drake's Equation is a mathematical formula created in 1961 to estimate the number of extraterrestrial civilizations in our galaxy that can communicate with humans and might be detectable through their signals, like radio waves.

If whales show that curiosity and friendly interactions are key to communication, it suggests alien civilizations might also need these traits to develop detectable signals, influencing the numbers in Drake's Equation and guiding SETI's search for life beyond Earth.

A mysterious metallic sphere was captured soaring above a field in Colombia, just two months after locals recovered a similar object many are calling a UFO.

The footage, filmed on June 7 over a sugarcane field in Yumbo, shows the sphere darting in a zigzag pattern and maneuvering in ways that appear to defy conventional aircraft.

Witnesses described the object as 'moving with great speed and freedom' as it hovered above the ground.

However, many people said the object is either a balloon or the video was created using AI.

UFO researcher Jaime Maussan, whose research has stirred controversy for nearly a decade, released the video on his show, Maussan Television.

He described the sphere as 'likely not from here' and suggested it may be a technology humans do not yet possess.

'When the workers were investigating the crops, this sphere appeared and they were able to capture it with state-of-the-art equipment. The images are truly extraordinary,' Maussan said. He added that the latest sphere appeared nearly identical to the first, recovered in Buga, about 43 miles from Yumbo.

Scientists who analyzed the latest video said the object emits an electromagnetic field, generates strong heat and may possess antigravity capabilities.

'We believe these spheres are investigating, observing us, possibly searching for the first one recovered in Buga,' Maussan said in a translated statement.

'Could we be on the path to contact? That's the extraordinary question we're asking today.'

The first Buga sphere, recovered on March 2 by locals, weighed about 4.5 pounds and was described as 'having the temperature of a refrigerator when touched, but emitting strong heat when not.'

A team led by Guatemalan researcher Jose Manrique analyzed the Yumbo video and insisted it had been manipulated by A.

If it is indeed identical to the first, the object may be inscribed with strange 'alien' writing, a message for humanity, which Manrique's team previously deciphered to say: 'The origin of birth through union and energy in the cycle of transformation, meeting point of unity, expansion, and consciousness — individual consciousness.'

Manrique interpreted it as 'a message to humanity, encouraging a collective shift in consciousness to help Mother Earth, especially considering the current issues with pollution and environmental decline.'

The identities of the workers who filmed the Yumbo sphere have not been made public, but Maussan said the video was sent to David Vélez el Potro, a key figure in the recovery of the Buga sphere.

Vélez el Potro told Maussan in March that the man who found it, Jose, felt sick for days after touching the object.

He also claimed that the government contacted him to hand it over the sphere, but he refused, saying, 'It would never be seen again.'

Instead, Vélez el Potro gave it to Maussan and his team of experts with hopes of them uncovering the sphere's origin.

Scientists who examined the Buga sphere said it comprises 18 microspheres surrounding a central nucleus, a configuration some are calling 'a chip.'

However, Dr Julia Mossbridge of the University of San Diego Department of Physics and Biophysics, has doubted the authenticity of Buga sphere, calling it a 'man-made art project.'

Researchers from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) recently released a new analysis, suggesting a strong, decayed ionized field emits from the Buga sphere.

Rodolfo Garrido, a Mexican engineer, said his team weighed the sphere numerous times and were surprised to find it growing heavier, from 16 to 20 and then 22 pounds, without changing in size.

Garrido explained that this phenomenon may be due to the object's ability to manipulate gravity and generate its own electromagnetic field, allowing it to become lighter or heavier at will.

The revelations were presented on Maussan's TV program Interstellar, although the journalist's involvement has raised eyebrows.

Maussan has previously made headlines for sensational, and subsequently debunked, claims, including mummified corpses and other supposed extraterrestrial finds.

Nonetheless, the latest incident has captured the imagination of many and ignited a heated debate about what, or who, might be visiting us from the skies above.

Scientists are BAFFLED by mysterious radio signals coming from beneath Antarctica's ice

Scientists have discovered mysterious radio signals emerging from deep beneath Antarctica's ice.

The strange radio pulses were detected by the Antarctic Impulsive Transient Antenna (ANITA), an array of instruments designed to detect elusive particles called neutrinos.

Rather than detecting these cosmic particles, the researchers were baffled to find signals emerging from the ice at seemingly impossible angles.

Worryingly, they have no idea what could be causing them.

In a paper, published in Physical Review Letters, an international team of researchers explained that these findings cannot be explained by the current understanding of particle physics.

This might mean there are entirely new forms of particles and interactions at play or that these unusual signals are the product of mysterious dark matter.

Dr Stephanie Wissel, an astrophysicist from The Pennsylvania State University who worked on the ANITA team, says: 'The radio waves that we detected were at really steep angles, like 30 degrees below the surface of the ice.

'It's an interesting problem because we still don't actually have an explanation for what those anomalies are.'

Scientists have been baffled to discover mysterious radio signals emerging from deep beneath Antarctica's ice

The ANITA experiment was designed to hunt for an elusive type of particle called a neutrino, the smallest of all the subatomic particles.

Neutrinos are typically created by high-energy events like the Big Bang or a supernova and are extremely common throughout the universe.

However, since they are so small and don't have a charge, they don't affect the objects they pass through, which makes them extremely difficult to spot.

Dr Wissel says: 'You have a billion neutrinos passing through your thumbnail at any moment, but neutrinos don't really interact.

'So, this is the double-edged sword problem. If we detect them, it means they have travelled all this way without interacting with anything else. We could be detecting a neutrino coming from the edge of the observable universe.'

Like opening a time capsule from the distant past, examining the signal from a neutrino could reveal more information about the cosmos than data from the world's most powerful telescopes.

To try and find them, the ANITA experiment uses balloons floating 18 to 24 miles (30-39km) above the Antarctic, where other signals are rare, to look for radio waves caused by neutrinos hitting the ice.

'We point our antennas down at the ice and look for neutrinos that interact in the ice, producing radio emissions that we can then sense on our detectors,' says Dr Wissel.

This experiment's sensor balloons detected radio signals emerging from beneath the ice at such steep angles that they could not have been made by neutrinos

Just as a ball thrown to the ground will always bounce at a particular angle, scientists can use the trajectory of these signals to track the neutrino back to its origin.

However, the scientists were shocked to discover a set of signals which could not be traced back to any possible origin.

These radio signals were coming from the the ice at an impossibly steep angle, something that a neutrino-produced signal could never do.

Even stranger, rather than bouncing off the ice, the pulses appear to be coming from below the horizon.

That would mean the radio waves would have had to travel through thousands of miles of rock and ice before reaching ANITA's balloons, which should have rendered them undetectable.

After analysing the data from multiple flights and comparing it to simulations of cosmic rays, the researchers were able to filter out the background noise.

However, after eliminating the possibility of any other known particle-based signals, the anomalous radio pulses remained stubbornly unexplained.

Additionally, other detectors, the IceCube Experiment and the Pierre Auger Observatory didn't detect anything that could explain what the scientists were seeing.

Scientists currently don't know what is causing these signals to emerge or how they can pass through so much rock and ice. It could be a new type of particle interaction or the interference of dark matter (stock image)

According to scientists' current understanding of how particles interact, these signals shouldn't be possible.

This has led scientists to speculate that they may have stumbled onto a type of particle interaction previously unknown to science.

Dr Wissel says: 'My guess is that some interesting radio propagation effect occurs near ice and also near the horizon that I don't fully understand, but we certainly explored several of those, and we haven't been able to find any of those yet either.

    article image

'So, right now, it's one of these long-standing mysteries.'

To learn more, scientists are currently building an even bigger detector, dubbed PUEO, which will be better at spotting hidden particles.

That could help scientists understand the origins of these baffling signals from beneath the ice.

Dr Wissel concludes: 'I'm excited that when we fly PUEO, we'll have better sensitivity. In principle, we should pick up more anomalies, and maybe we'll actually understand what they are.'

EXPLAINED: THE STANDARD MODEL OF PHYSICS DESCRIBES THE FUNDAMENTAL STRUCTURE OF MATTER IN THE UNIVERSE

The theories and discoveries of thousands of physicists since the 1930s have resulted in a remarkable insight into the fundamental structure of matter.

Everything in the universe is found to be made from a few basic building blocks called fundamental particles, governed by four fundamental forces.

Our best understanding of how these particles and three of the forces are related to each other is encapsulated in the Standard Model of particle physics.

All matter around us is made of elementary particles, the building blocks of matter.

These particles occur in two basic types called quarks and leptons. Each consists of six particles, which are related in pairs, or 'generations'.

All stable matter in the universe is made from particles that belong to the first generation. Any heavier particles quickly decay to the next most stable level.

There are also four fundamental forces at work in the universe: the strong force, the weak force, the electromagnetic force, and the gravitational force. They work over different ranges and have different strengths.

Gravity is the weakest but it has an infinite range.

The electromagnetic force also has infinite range but it is many times stronger than gravity.

The weak and strong forces are effective only over a very short range and dominate only at the level of subatomic particles.

The Standard Model includes the electromagnetic, strong and weak forces and all their carrier particles, and explains well how these forces act on all of the matter particles.

However, the most familiar force in our everyday lives, gravity, is not part of the Standard Model, and fitting gravity comfortably into this framework has proved to be a difficult challenge.

In March 2025, NASA's Polarimeter to Unify the Corona and Heliosphere (PUNCH) mission launched into orbit to monitor the Sun's outer atmosphere to reveal more about solar wind. Developed and led by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), this constellation consists of four microsatellites that observe the Sun's corona and heliosphere using continuous 3D deep-field imaging. While completing its commission phase, the Wide Field Imagers (WFIs) aboard the four PUNCH spacecraft captured high-resolution images of a Coronal Mass Ejection (CME) in greater detail than any previous mission.

SwRI heliophysicist Dr. Craig DeForest discussed the latest accomplishments of the PUNCH mission at the 246th American Astronomical Society meeting, which took place from June 8th to 12th in Anchorage, Alaska. DeForest is the Director of the SwRI's Department of Solar and Heliospheric Physics, the former Chair of the AAS's Solar Physics Division, and PUNCH's principal investigator. As he explained:

These preliminary movies show that PUNCH can actually track space weather across the solar system and view the corona and solar wind as a single system. This big-picture view is essential to helping scientists better understand and predict space weather driven by CMEs, which can disrupt communications, endanger satellites and create auroras at Earth. These first integrated images of our home in space are astonishing, but the best is yet to come. Once the spacecraft are in their final formation and the ground processing is fully sighted over the next few months, we'll be able to track the solar wind and space weather in 3D throughout our neighborhood in space.

These images were taken by PUNCH's four cameras, which work together as a single "virtual instrument," measuring 12,875 km (8,000 mi) across. Their WFIs work with a Narrow Field Imager (NFI) chronograph that blocks out the Sun's bright light, allowing scientists to observe the outermost portion of the corona and the continual stream of charged particles from the Sun (solar wind). The images the spacecraft took were stitched together to create a video (see below) that shows giant CMEs erupting and spreading across the inner Solar System. The images also show Venus, Jupiter, the Moon (visible as bright spots), and several constellations like Orion and Pleiades in the background.

During its two-year primary mission, PUNCH will continue to make global 3D observations of the Sun's outer atmosphere and the inner solar system. These detailed images will help scientists better understand space weather, which can disrupt communications, satellites, and missions in Low Earth Orbit (LEO), and will improve predictive models. "These first images are astonishing, but the best is still yet to come," said DeForest. "Once the spacecraft are in their final formation, we'll be able to routinely track space weather in 3D across the entire inner solar system."

Now this is strange. I was looking through the NASA site and found a mushroom on the bottom center of the photo. I'm not sure how or why NASA could overlook such a thing...since NASA's mission it to find life on other planets and moons. This object has a curved bottom part of a stem, same as those on Earth...in my yard actually too. The top is round, uneven and wrinkled...same as the ones in my front yard. This one has clearly pushed up out of the Mars dirt, you can see below the cap is an empty area without dirt, because the cap pushed it all aside when growing. Did you know that mushroom spores can live in the harsh environment of space and may have traveled to Maras this way? NASA should have poked it, bumped it, knocked it over, cut it open with their tools on Curiosity rover or at least use that million dollar laser they burn rocks and dirt with in many photos. It would be great if NASA took some time-lapse photos of it so we can see if it changes over a few days time. The photo is about 13 cm across, because this is a hand lens image, and the mushroom cap is about 1.5 cm and 1.5 cm tall. Life...has been found!

Mysterious 'flying saucer' in the Sahara Desert is discovered on Google Maps – as baffled viewers suggest it could be a crashed UFO

From a mysterious 'doorway' in the Antarctic to hidden symbols in the Gobi DesertGoogle Maps has revealed some weird and wonderful secrets over the years.

But this latest discovery might be one of the strangest yet.

Keen-eyed internet sleuths have spotted what seems to be a 'flying saucer' buried in the Sahara Desert.

According to some baffled viewers, the unusual structure could be a crashed UFO that has been buried for thousands of years.

The mysterious object is located near the tiny town of Bordj Omar Driss, Algeria, deep within the Sahara Desert.

UFO hunter Scott Waring, who made the strange discovery, told MailOnline: 'It's likely the UFO has been there for tens of thousands of years, predating recorded human history.

'I also want to note, that the CIA and other organizations will have people try to label any discoveries of UFOs on Google Earth Map as something else in order to manipulate and deceive the public from knowing the truth.'

Unfortunately for these alien hunters, experts say there is a much simpler explanation.

The odd structure was spotted on Google Maps at the coordinates 28°8'45.15'N 6°48'20.85'E.

In a video sharing his findings, Mr Waring claims that the 'UFO' is buried 34.4 feet (10.5m) according to Google Earth Pro's elevation measuring tools.

Mr Waring told MailOnline that, at the Sahara's sediment accumulation rate of 0.5 mm per year, the 'UFO' must have landed 21,000 years ago to be buried so deeply.

He also points to the fact that the structure isn't present in early satellite images of the site, suggesting that it must have been 'excavated' recently.

On social media, Mr Waring's surprising comments have found widespread support, as commenters rushed to share their excitement.

One enthusiastic commenter wrote: 'I would love to know the whole story but this definitely looks like a crash site or something considering it popped up on the map out of nowhere.'

'I wonder whether some bodies have been found... This is so weird,' added another.

While one conspiratorially minded commenter wrote: 'Take screen shots everyone, cause you know Google is going to make this disappear.'

An alternative satellite view of the structure from an earlier period shows that more development has taken place around it recently

    (stock image)

Adding fuel to the flames of speculation, Mr Waring adds: 'The UFO seems to have been torn open around the lower center dome. Possibly to enter the craft in order to loot it before government officials get hold of it.'

However, the real explanation for this strange site is much more mundane.

Nick Pope, former UFO investigator for the Ministry of Defence, told MailOnline: 'With the recent expansion in the capabilities of AI, it's increasingly difficult to ensure that images haven't been faked, or doctored.

'But even assuming the picture is genuine and not altered in any way, it's impossible to tell much from the image alone.

'There's no context, and applying the principle of Occam's Razor - that the simplest explanation is usually the correct one - this is more likely to be a circular building or structure of some sort than a crashed alien spacecraft.'

And, thanks to the work of some online investigators, we actually know exactly what kind of building this is.

The 'mysterious' structure is actually just the foundation for an onshore wind turbine.

Before the tower is added, these huge reinforced concrete structures are dug deep into the ground which would explain why the structure appears to be below the surface.

However, this structure is likely to be nothing more than the foundation for an onshore wind turbine (pictured) which have a classic 'flying saucer' shape

With a classic 'flying saucer' shape of a round body and central dome, it is easy to see how someone might mistake these structures for a UFO.

But looking at aerial photographs of known wind turbines you can see that this Saharan structure is almost certainly the base of another wind turbine.

In other satellite images of the location, this similarity is even clearer.

Likewise, as UFO analyst and sceptic Mick West points out, there is another foundation just to the southwest where the tower of the wind turbine has already started construction.

Algeria, where these were found, is currently undergoing a major investment in wind power, with the government aiming to produce 27 per cent of its electricity from renewable resources by 2035.

The country also has some of the world's greatest potential for wind power with consistent wind speeds of up to eight metres per second in many regions.

This makes it a lot more likely that there would be a wind turbine under construction than a secret, ancient UFO hidden beneath the desert.

Unfortunately, UFO investigators say wild claims like these actually interfere with their search for extraterrestrial life.

UFO researcher Philip Mantle, told MailOnline: 'The vast majority of UFO sighting reports including photos and video end up having a rational explanation.

'Then there is an amount that just doesn't have enough info to reach a conclusion.

'This leaves only a very small minority that may be left for serious examination.

'Photos like this are not to be taken seriously and rank alongside stories that Elvis is still alive and he lives with Lord Lucan.'

WHAT DID BUZZ ALDRIN SAY ABOUT HIS 'UFO ENCOUNTER'?

While UFO enthusiasts have long clung to Buzz Aldrin's story of a strange light appearing alongside his spacecraft in 1969, the Apollo 11 astronaut does not think what he saw was an alien.

During a 2014 Q&A on Reddit, he explained:

'On Apollo 11 in route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world - it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft.

'So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And i feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected off of one of these panels. Which one? I don't know. So technically, the definition could be "unidentified."

'We well understood exactly what that was. And when we returned, we debriefed and explained exactly what we had observed.

'And I felt that this had been distributed to the outside world, the outside audience, and apparently it wasn't, and so many years later, I had the time in an interview to disclose these observations, on another country's television network. And the UFO people in the United States were very very angry with me, that i had not given them the information. It was not an alien. Extraordinary observations require extraordinary evidence.

'That's what Carl Sagan said. There may be aliens in our Milky Way galaxy, and there are billions of other galaxies. The probability is almost CERTAIN that there is life somewhere in space.

'It was not that remarkable, that special, that unusual, that life here on earth evolved gradually, slowly, to where we are today.

But the distances involved in where some evidence of life may be, they may be hundreds of light years away.'

Guys this is so cool. It's not often we get a shapshifing UFO. They are mostly reported seen in Central and South America. This one seems to have been flying over the area due to the No Kings protests going on about US President Trump. I believe the aliens are watching the protests in order to gather data not just on that days activities, but to use the data for the big picture...to predict the political future and direction of the United States. I love how it changes shape and has this fuzzy static white glow all around it the whole time. This is rare.

Now I have been to Bali island once about 15 years ago and its got a lot of mysterious cultural phenomenon that we in the US would not understand. I just loved it! I'm 70% sure this is an underwater city, because the only way to confirm that is to fly there and see for yourself diving. I remember seeing lots of ruins in Bali. But the long rectangles do resemble ancient homes foundations built side by side. This is a curious situation here. What ever it is...it's mind boggling. So many unknown things on the bottom of the ocean left to find.

Top 10 Little-Known UFO Sightings With Multiple Witnesses

Most UFO sightings are witnessed by only one person, which makes it harder to convince others that the sighting was not just a figment of someone’s imagination. However, some encounters take place in front of multiple witnesses—and this changes things entirely.

Even if these events are not alien in nature, the fact th/ /at so many people witnessed these incidents at the same time means that “something” took place. Perhaps more importantly, this suggests that these episodes are not purely the products of the imagination.

    10 Lesser-Known UFO Crash Incidents

    10. Hudson Valley Sightings - New York, Early 1980s

With Fourth of July celebrations fast approaching in late June 1983, part of the evening sky over New York’s Hudson Valley was awash with fireworks. This was the result of early Independence Day celebrators. Out of the mini explosions of color suddenly came a low humming sound that brought with it a huge disc-shaped craft “about the width of 16 or 17 houses!”

    Hudson Valley UFO Sightings, 1982 - 1986

As it hovered over the witnesses, the strange humming ceased and the craft simply hung in the air in chilling silence. Several minutes after the UFO first appeared, the humming began again and the disc shot off at great speed.

This was just one of many UFO sightings in Hudson Valley in the early 1980s. But it was not the only one to have multiple witnesses to the event.

On March 24, 1983, there were so many reports of a sighting of a strange craft and weird lights in the sky of Yorktown that the town’s switchboard almost went into meltdown. That evening, the Taconic parkway became gridlocked with vehicles that had stopped suddenly. Their mesmerized drivers now stood beside their cars staring up at the assumed UFO passing over them.

    9. Arthur Kill River Incident - New Jersey Turnpike, 2001

On the evening of July 14 and into the morning of July 15 in 2001, at least 15 people witnessed strange golden-orange lights over the Arthur Kill River at the New Jersey Turnpike. They appeared to be in a V-formation. However, it wasn’t clear from the many accounts if the lights were separate entities or if they belonged to one large V-shaped craft.

Others reported that the lights were in a more “scattered” formation and simply disappeared into the night sky one by one. Newark Airport was contacted, but they hadn’t detected anything abnormal on their radar. According to the National Weather Service, there was no unusual weather that evening, either.

Witness Veronica Bagley managed to capture the lights on video. Meanwhile, another witness, Patty Ercallino, stated that the whole incident was “very peaceful, very serene, and very beautiful.” She even believed that they had observed “some type of miracle!”

    8. The Cosford Incident - Western England, 1993

According to UFO expert Nick Pope, over 100 people reported seeing a UFO on the evening of March 30 and into the early hours of March 31, 1993, over the west of England. What’s more, many observers were active police and military personnel. Pope worked on the case personally as was his remit during the time he spent with the British Ministry of Defense.

Most sightings described triangular craft that moved through the night sky at a blistering pace. One particular witness—a policeman—was with a group of scouts on the Quantock Hills in Somerset. They described the objects as “like two Concordes flying side by side and joined together!”

There were more reported sightings in Cornwall, Devon, and West Midlands as well as over two RAF bases in Shropshire—RAF Shawbury and RAF Cosford. Neither base managed to pick up the mysterious craft on radar. At the time, Pope described this in his report as being of “considerable defense significance” that should be investigated further.

    7. Ellsworth Air Force Base Sighting - South Dakota, 1953

Numerous military personnel saw a UFO on the evening of August 5, 1953, near Ellsworth Air Force Base. There were also 45 concerned residents of nearby towns who witnessed the bizarre events.

The first sighting was reported just after 8:00 PM in the town of Blackhawk. Mrs. Kellian, a volunteer member of the Ground Observer Corp, had observed a strange glowing red light in the clear night sky.

As she was trained to do, she reported her sighting immediately. She was eventually put through to the on-duty radar operator at Ellsworth Air Force Base.

The craft was picked up on radar clearly heading toward the base. An F-84 jet fighter on patrol in the area was directed toward the object. As the F-84 got to within 5 kilometers (3 mi) of the disc-like craft, the UFO moved away fast.

Although the F-84 attempted to give chase, it was unable to match the UFO’s speed and returned to Ellsworth. A second F-84 made its way to the area. The pilot confirmed that he could visually see the object. Also unable to keep up with the UFO, the F-84 suffered strange malfunctions of his aircraft.

    6. Exeter - New Hampshire, 1965

Norman Muscarello was hitchhiking home to Exeter, New Hampshire, in the early hours of September 3, 1965. Patiently making his way along Route 150 as he looked out for his next potential ride, Muscarello noticed a strange light in the dark early morning sky. Within seconds, the light was heading straight toward him.

1965 🇺🇸 #UFOB [CASE] Sightings - UFO at Exeter NH, witnessed by Norman Muscarello

Fearing that he would be struck by the strange craft, Muscarello flung himself to the ground on the roadside. However, at the last moment, the UFO changed direction. Muscarello got up and fled the area as quickly as he could.

Around an hour earlier a short distance away, Eugene Bertrand, an on-duty policeman, had come across a parked vehicle on the side of the road. Inside sat a woman who frantically informed Bertrand that she had been chased by a “flying object.”

However, Bertrand assured the woman that there was no cause for concern. Genuinely believing that the lady had been mistaken, he went on his way.

It was around 3:00 AM by the time Muscarello made his way to the Exeter Police Station. Shortly after, Bertrand returned and listened to the story himself. He then drove the young man back to Route 150 to investigate.

After parking on the same stretch of road, the two men soon spotted the strange craft. As it had done before, the object moved closer to the pair. Unnerved, the two men quickly made their way back to the police car. A short time later, calls about more sightings began to flood in.

    5. The Greifswald Lights - Germany, 1990

Strange spherical lights had been reported regularly from the coast along the Baltic Sea from the beginning of August 1990. By August 24, the lights appeared to have moved inland and were reported by residents of Greifswald, a coastal town in eastern Germany.

At first, the strange spheres hovered in the air almost motionless for around 30 minutes. Many witnesses managed to capture photographs and even video footage. The case is regarded as one of the best-documented UFO sightings.

UFO Greifswald Lights - August 24, 1990 Germany

It seemed to consist of two separate sets of lights. The first set formed a circle and remained largely still. When they did move, they moved as one. The second set of lights seemed to be in the shape of a Y. Of more import, they appeared to move freely of each other.

Neither the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) nor mainstream scientists have been able to offer a solid or satisfactory explanation.

    4. Fort Beaufort - South Africa, 1972

Bennie Smit believed without a doubt that he and his workers had witnessed a strange craft over his farm on June 26, 1972. However, he firmly believed that they had seen a top secret military craft and not visitors from another world.

Smit’s farm sat about 16 kilometers (10 mi) away from Fort Beaufort, a town in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. On that June morning, Smit found his workers cowering in a shed on the farm. They claimed that something strange was hovering above the trees in one of the fields.

Smit went to investigate and did indeed see a strange object. The farmer promptly fired at it with his .303 rifle. He maintained that his aim was correct and that he did hit the target. The bullets, however, had no effect.

    1972 Fort Beaufort UFO Incident

Smit contacted the local police, who arrived just in time to see the craft landing on the ground. The UFO appeared to be the same shape as an oil drum, with three distinct “legs” underneath it.

One of the policemen, Sergeant Kitching, also fired his weapon at the craft. The UFO appeared to react to the discharge this time. The strange object began to change color from black to green. Then it turned yellow before finally becoming a pale white.

The witnesses heard a “whirring” sound before the craft took off from the field and vanished.

    3. Sighting Over Houston Goes Viral Online - Houston, Texas, 2014

On August 11, 2014, hundreds of people in Houston saw a circle of lights in the evening sky. Pictures spread like wildfire over social media accounts. When video footage of the encounter was made available on the Internet, however, it became apparent that the lights were moving independently and were not a static circle.

Dr. Carolyn Sumners of the Houston Museum of Natural Science cautioned that no one should assume that the strange object was an alien visitor. With UFO sightings, she stated, we need to figure out what else it could be instead of aliens. However, no official explanation or theory has since been made available.

UFO Skeptic SHOCKED By Sighting Over Houston Texas! 5/14/16

Witnesses to the event have their own theories about it. Not surprisingly, many believe that the lights were indeed extraterrestrial in origin. However, others think they saw a government drone or even the reflection of lights from a nearby football stadium.

    2. Mass UFO Sighting During Baseball Game - Vancouver, Canada, 2013

During a minor league baseball game between the Vancouver Canadians and the Everett AquaSox in 2013, hundreds of people had their attention drawn away from the game as a strange object appeared over the field.

The UFO had a triangular shape with lights around its edges. Even the players seemed to notice the aerial anomaly. One spoke on social media after the contest about the “alien spaceship” that had been seen.

Captured On Camera: UFO Spotted Hovering At Canadian Baseball Game

Many photographs and videos soon surfaced online, although no official explanation was initially offered. A local newspaper, however, speculated that the UFO could have been—and most likely was—a remote-control helicopter.

But the truth about this “UFO” was revealed just a couple of weeks later. The whole thing was a marketing ploy to publicize a new planetarium theater at the H.R. MacMillan Space Center in Vancouver.

Maybe that’s why Vancouver had more UFO sightings in 2013 than any other Canadian city.

    1. The Trindade UFO Incident - 1958

In October 1957, the Brazilian navy set up a scientific research base on the island of Trindade. By January 1958, they were witness to some of the most bizarre UFO sightings of the 20th century.

Upon establishing the base, personnel began to report strange silvery objects that seemed to be observing their actions. On the morning of New Year’s Day 1958, the entire garrison witnessed a strange light passing overhead. The following evening, a glowing object circled around one of the navy ships for 10 minutes. It executed sudden and precise turns as it did so.

On January 6, Commander Carlos A. Bacellar launched a weather balloon. However, he realized that the signals it should have been emitting had suddenly stopped. When he looked at the sky, he saw the balloon being “sucked up” into a cloud and disappearing.

1958: UFO Sighting at Trindade Brazil [FULL VERSION]

Ten minutes later, it reappeared, only without its instruments. A little while later, a silver object exited the same cloud and calmly made its way from the scene.

On January 16, the entire crew of a navy ship off the coast of the island witnessed a strange bright object. It was making its way over the ship and toward the island. One observer managed to take several photographs of the airborne craft. Once the photographs had been developed, they were promptly released to the press.

Lights Over West Michigan | 1994 UFO Sighting Special

NASA Is Watching a Huge, Growing Anomaly in Earth's Magnetic Field

NASA has been monitoring a strange anomaly in Earth's magnetic field: a giant region of lower magnetic intensity in the skies above the planet, stretching out between South America and southwest Africa.

This vast, developing phenomenon, called the South Atlantic Anomaly, has intrigued and concerned scientists for years, and perhaps none more so than NASA researchers.

The space agency's satellites and spacecraft are particularly vulnerable to the weakened magnetic field strength within the anomaly, and the resulting exposure to charged particles from the Sun.

The South Atlantic Anomaly (SAA) – likened by NASA to a 'dent' in Earth's magnetic field, or a kind of 'pothole in space' – generally doesn't affect life on Earth, but the same can't be said for orbital spacecraft (including the International Space Station), which pass directly through the anomaly as they loop around the planet at low-Earth orbit altitudes.

During these encounters, the reduced magnetic field strength inside the anomaly means technological systems onboard satellites can short-circuit and malfunction if they become struck by high-energy protons emanating from the Sun.

    NASA Explores Earth's Magnetic 'Dent'

These random hits may usually only produce low-level glitches, but they do carry the risk of causing significant data loss, or even permanent damage to key components – threats obliging satellite operators to routinely shut down spacecraft systems before spacecraft enter the anomaly zone.

Mitigating those hazards in space is one reason NASA is tracking the SAA; another is that the mystery of the anomaly represents a great opportunity to investigate a complex and difficult-to-understand phenomenon, and NASA's broad resources and research groups are uniquely well-appointed to study the occurrence.

"The magnetic field is actually a superposition of fields from many current sources," geophysicist Terry Sabaka from NASA's Goddard Space Flight Centre in Greenbelt, Maryland explained in 2020.

The primary source is considered to be a swirling ocean of molten iron inside Earth's outer core, thousands of kilometers below the ground. The movement of that mass generates electrical currents that create Earth's magnetic field, but not necessarily uniformly, it seems.

A huge reservoir of dense rock called the African Large Low Shear Velocity Province, located about 2,900 kilometers (1,800 miles) below the African continent, is thought to disturb the field's generation, resulting in the dramatic weakening effect – which is aided by the tilt of the planet's magnetic axis.

"The observed SAA can be also interpreted as a consequence of weakening dominance of the dipole field in the region," said NASA Goddard geophysicist and mathematician Weijia Kuang in 2020.

"More specifically, a localized field with reversed polarity grows strongly in the SAA region, thus making the field intensity very weak, weaker than that of the surrounding regions."

Satellite data suggesting the SAA is dividing.

    (Division of Geomagnetism, DTU Space)

While there's much scientists still don't fully understand about the anomaly and its implications, new insights are continually shedding light on this strange phenomenon.

For example, one study led by NASA heliophysicist Ashley Greeley in 2016 revealed the SAA slowly drifts around, which was confirmed by subsequent tracking from CubeSats in research published in 2021.

It's not just moving, however. Even more remarkably, the phenomenon seems to be in the process of splitting in two, with researchers in 2020 discovering that the SAA appeared to be dividing into two distinct cells, each representing a separate center of minimum magnetic intensity within the greater anomaly.

Just what that means for the future of the SAA remains unknown, but in any case, there's evidence to suggest that the anomaly is not a new appearance.

A study published in July 2020 suggested the phenomenon is not a freak event of recent times, but a recurrent magnetic event that may have affected Earth since as far back as 11 million years ago.

If so, that could signal that the South Atlantic Anomaly is not a trigger or precursor to the entire planet's magnetic field flipping, which is something that actually happens, if not for hundreds of thousands of years at a time.

A more recent study published in 2024 found the SAA also has an impact on auroras seen on Earth.

Obviously, huge questions remain, but with so much going on with this vast magnetic oddity, it's good to know the world's most powerful space agency is watching it as closely as they are.

"Even though the SAA is slow-moving, it is going through some change in morphology, so it's also important that we keep observing it by having continued missions," said Sabaka.

"Because that's what helps us make models and predictions."

Alien's language' problem that stumped mathematicians for decades may finally be

    By

An aerial photograph of a crop circle design
Crop circles, like this one in England, are sometimes misinterpreted as alien messages. They've got nothing on the complexity of the Inter-universal Teichmüller Theory — a math proof so complicated it's been dubbed the "alien's language".

Imagine this scenario: Scientists have intercepted a transmission from an alien race. It's clear that the message comes from an intelligent being, but everything about it — the syntax, the grammar, the context — is unintelligible to us Earthlings.

That's how most mathematicians feel about the Inter-universal Teichmüller Theory (IUT), a proof introduced by mathematician Shinichi Mochizuki over a decade ago in an attempt to solve the famous ABC conjecture, one of the most famous unsolved problems in number theory, which deals with the sum of prime numbers and has implications on many other conjectures.

IUT bears so little resemblance to other branches of math that it's been nicknamed the "alien's language." Only about 20 people in the world have managed to comprehend it to any extent. But now, a 28-year-old engineer named Zhou Zhongpeng has made significant progress in demystifying IUT.

Mochizuki developed IUT in the early 2000s and published it across a series of four preprints in 2012. The proof is over 2,000 pages long, and Mochizuki claims it offers a solution to the ABC conjecture. If proven, the conjecture could help clarify other major mathematical enigmas, such as Fermat's Last Theorem — a nearly 400-year-old theorem that states no three positive integers a, b, and c satisfy the equation an + bn = cn for any integer value of n greater than 2. The theorem was first solved by mathematician Andrew Wiles in 1995, but Zhou's new framework could prove the theorem in much fewer steps.

However, IUT employs concepts and symbols that are wholly unique in the world of math. In other words, Mochizuki essentially created his own mathematical language — and it confounded many of the world's leading mathematicians. A few brave souls, including mathematician Ivan Fesenko, have chipped away at parts of it and lent some credence to Mochizuki's claims. Yet despite existing for over a decade, IUT has not been fully verified by peer review because it is so difficult to understand.

    Related:

Enter Zhou. He has a background in mathematics, having studied graph theory as a doctoral candidate, but he ultimately left before completing his degree to work as a software engineer. However, this didn't diminish his interest in pure math. He became obsessed with IUT, studying the theory in his spare time despite a busy workweek. Over the course of five months, he detailed several refinements and new applications in a paper, which he sent to both Mochizuki and Fesenko. The work, if correct, proves the majority of cases of generalized Fermat's Last Theorem, using principles from IUT.

The mathematicians were impressed; Fesenko even offered to fly him out to Westlake University in China, where he works. Zhou accepted the offer and is currently working under Fesenko's tutelage on furthering the proof. There are myriad potential applications of this work, ranging from cryptography and quantum computing to a better understanding of space-time — but only if they're comprehensible to other researchers.

And parts of IUT still remain inscrutable. It will likely be years before someone cracks it fully, if at all. "Those papers are based on the research of predecessors; my work has only made some minor innovations and explorations, and I hope to contribute a modest amount to the relevant field," Zhou said in a social media post.

    • Editor's Note: This story was corrected at 5:00 p.m. EDT on June 4 to correct the formatting of Fermat's Last Theorem, and to clarify that Zhou's work could prove the theorem in fewer steps than Wiles' version.
