China reveals details of next-gen crew spacecraft's 1st test flight
The as-yet unnamed craft toted lots of experiments up during last month's test flight to orbit.
A first glimpse inside the prototype of China's next-generation crew-carrying spacecraft has been provided in Beijing following a successful uncrewed test flight in May.
The capsule, which has not yet been named, launched on a Long March 5B rocket from Wenchang on May 5, carrying out a first uncrewed test for future deep-space missions.
The new two-module spacecraft performed well in orbit, and the crew capsule returned to Earth on May 8, testing a high-speed atmospheric reentry that the spacecraft needs to survive in order to safely bring astronauts home from the moon.

The crew capsule survived temperatures of around 5,432 degrees Fahrenheit (3,000 degrees Celsius) during reentry.
The capsule provides 459 cubic feet (13 cubic meters) of internal space, allowing six or seven astronauts to ride it. China’s current crew spacecraft, the Shenzhou, can carry three astronauts.
A look inside the new craft shows a living zone on the left, including a toilet and a folding dining table. Storage bags and racks on the right were present only to test transport capacity during the test mission.
The test flight overall verified numerous technologies and returned data for a range of experiments, Chinese officials said.
"We opened the return capsule and retrieved the data from the black box, including the data about the force and heat, as well as the temperature data related to aerodynamic heating, so we can get more data to test our reentry and return technologies and all other critical technologies," Guo Bin, a designer of the next-generation crew spaceship with the China Academy of Space Technology (CAST), told Chinese media.
Guo said the flight proved new heat shielding technologies and aerodynamic configurations of the spacecraft.

Experiments aboard the spacecraft included a 3D printing system for microgravity environments, gigabit-level high-speed communications between the ground and the spacecraft, and an on-orbit leakage and collision detection experiment that uses sound waves.
The crew capsule also carried nearly 4.4 lbs. (2 kilograms) of seeds for space irradiation experiments. Cosmic radiation, microgravity and other factors combine to generate mutations of the crops’ genetic material, which may prove beneficial and lead to the cultivation of new varieties.
The mission was overall a huge success for China, officials said. The launch qualified the Long March 5B to begin launching modules for the planned Chinese space station. The performance of the new-generation spacecraft means a crewed test could follow to the station in the coming years.
Two versions of the new spacecraft are in development. One will be capable of carrying six astronauts, or three astronauts and 1,100 lbs. (500 kg) of cargo to the space station. The other will be capable of more demanding missions to deep space, which involve harsher radiation environments and greater reentry velocities.
Do extraterrestrials have rhythm? If they do, do they also have starlight, daisies in green pastures and sweet dreams? OK, they may not sing Earth jazz standards but if fast radio bursts are being generated by aliens, they definitely have some sort of rhythm because astronomers recently confirmed the first FRBs consistently following a regular rhythm over an 18 month period. Are these FRBs messages from a female alien with rhythm looking for “my man”?
“In 38 bursts recorded from 16 September 2018 to 4 February 2020 UTC, we find that all bursts arrive in a five-day phase window, and 50 per cent of the bursts arrive in a 0.6-day phase window. Our results suggest a mechanism for periodic modulation either of the burst emission itself or through external amplification or absorption, and disfavour models invoking purely sporadic processes.”
In a new study published this week in the journal Nature, astronomers using the Canadian Hydrogen Intensity Mapping Experiment (CHIME) – an interferometric radio telescope in British Columbia – determined that FRB 180916.J0158+65 emits fast radio bursts on a 16-day schedule, with 4 days of fast bursts followed by 12 days of silence.
“This FRB we’re reporting now is like clockwork. It’s the most definitive pattern we’ve seen from one of these sources. And it’s a big clue that we can use to start hunting down the physics of what’s causing these bright flashes, which nobody really understands.”
“… what’s causing these bright flashes, which nobody really understands.” Kiyoshi Masui, assistant professor of physics in MIT’s Kavli Institute for Astrophysics and Space Research and a member of the CHIME/FRB Collaboration that published the study, admits this new information still doesn’t explain FRBs, which means it could still be aliens, right? The study says it found no ”smoking gun” and instead offers some theories. One is a neutron star that is spinning and wobbling is a state known as precession, with the wobble defining the periods of bursts. Another is a neutron star orbiting another neutron star or a black hole, with one half of the binary pair blocking the other’s signal.
The latest theory that the FRB source is a magnetar, a neutron star with an intense magnetic field. Astronomers using CHIME proposed this after finding an FRB in our own Milky Way galaxy that appears to be flaring out of a magnetar. In the case of FRB 180916.J0158+65 and its 16-day cycle, this would mean an unusually slow magnetar.
The CHIME/FRB Collaboration study proposed one more theory:
“But the final possibility is the most intriguing: that long-term periodicity is the norm for repeating FRBs. If so, then such periodicity might be at the heart of the FRB mechanism — and it would mean that these natural phenomena are defeating the ability of the human imagination to explain it. More-creative ideas would be needed to identify the missing link between theory and observation.”
Other than ‘Area 51’, no word or phrase generates as much UFO interest in the paranormal world and in the mainstream as does ‘Roswell’ – the New Mexico town elevated to prominence by the alleged UFO crash in 1947 which occurred 75 miles away but was first announced by personnel at the Roswell Army Air Field (RAAF), linking it to the incident to this day. So, when the president of the United States mentions it in an interview, millions of ears perk up higher than Mr. Spock’s. What was President Trump alluding to when he said:
“I won’t talk to you about what I know about it, but it’s very interesting.”
There is no question that President Trump is interested in outer space, space travel and space defense. During his time in office, he created the Space Force as a military branch, attended the launch of the first manned flight by a private company, expressed interest in sending humans to Mars and criticized past administrations for not doing enough to encourage space exploration. However, despite the fact that his 2016 opponent (Hillary Clinton) and her campaign manager (John Podesta) both promised disclosure of government UFO files if they won and the government officially declared a set of USS Nimitz pilot videos as UFO sightings, President Trump has expressed little interest in UFOs or disclosure – full or partial.
“People are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly.”
The Tic Tac UFO
That was his response in an interview in 2019 when asked about the Nimitz UFO videos. That’s quite different that what he said yesterday. What has changed? Perhaps it was the interviewer – the president answered questions on ‘Triggered’, a podcast hosted by his son, Donald Trump Jr. Perhaps it was the intended purpose of the interview – Father’s Day, not a campaign Q-and-A. Or perhaps the president has finally recognized there are a lot of people – including many in his base – who are interested in UFOs, alien encounters with humans and government disclose of these incidents, not just Roswell.
“So many people ask me that question. There are millions and millions of people who want to go [to Roswell] and see it.”
See what? Not the city itself, although it’s a pleasant town, home of the International UFO Museum And Research Center and, for space buffs not necessarily interested in UFOs, the place where Robert Goddard conducted early rocket tests. No, they want to see whole or partial spacecrafts, dead or alive aliens, clear or fuzzy photos, complete or redacted documents and the like. Knowing this, Don Jr. pressed on and asked if Dad would release any of that.
“Well, I’ll have to think about that one.”
Think about what?
Come on! Was this just a fluff interview or does the president really have “interesting” info on the Roswell incident? It’s not like he hasn’t been around UFOs. There were reports about UFOs following his own helicopter on the campaign trail and on the day of the inauguration. And the president has often mentioned his uncle, John G. Trump, who was a professor at M.I.T. and a aide to the National Defense Research Committee who was called in to analyze the contents of Nikola Tesla’s apartment after Tesla died. Doesn’t this motivate him to show his tech genes and release some secret files … or at least give some better hints to their contents?
Sadly, the president’s frustrating comments do little to advance the conversation about UFOs, alien contact or disclosure. Perhaps someone should remind him about his former opponent’s commitment to the cause … or mention that John Podesta also worked for President Obama but nothing was released during that administration. Would that be motivation enough?
There are plenty of reporters and writers in the field who would love to conduct that interview.
Astronomen van de University of British Columbia (UBC) baseerden zich op gegevens van de Kepler-ruimtetelescoop om tot de schatting van zes miljard aardachtige exoplaneten in ons melkwegstelsel te komen. Het gaat om rotsachtige planeten van ongeveer dezelfde omvang als de aarde, die in de ‘bewoonbare zone’ rond een zonachtige ster cirkelen en die in theorie dus vloeibaar water kunnen herbergen. Met andere woorden: planeten waarop leven mogelijk zou zijn.
Co-auteur en astronoom aan de UBC, Jaymie Matthews, co-auteur van de nieuwe studie in The Astronomical Journal, legt uit dat er ongeveer 400 miljard sterren bestaan, waarvan zo’n zeven procent (28 miljard) van type G zijn. Rond ongeveer een vijfde daarvan kan een aardachtige exoplaneet cirkelen. “Dat betekent dat minder dan zes miljard sterren mogelijk aardachtige planeten in onze Melkweg hebben.”
Ruwweg is er volgens de berekeningen van de onderzoekers 18 procent kans dat zo’n aardachtige planeet rond een zonachtige ster - ook hoofdreeksster type G genoemd - zou draaien. Of nog: voor elke vijf van die zonachtige sterren in de Melkweg zou er één aardachtige planeet kunnen bestaan. Eerdere schattingen gingen uit van 0,02 potentieel leefbare planeten per zonachtige ster tot meer dan 1.
De nieuwe studie maakt een eerder lage schatting. “Mijn berekeningen zetten de bovengrens op 0,18 aardachtige planeten per type G-hoofdreeksster”, zegt hoofdauteur en UBC-onderzoekster Michelle Kunimoto. “Inschatten hoe vaak verschillende soorten planeten rond verschillende sterren voorkomen, kan een belangrijke invloed hebben op theorieën rond de vorming van planeten en hun evolutie, en kan toekomstige missies om exoplaneten te vinden helpen optimaliseren.”
De ruimtetelescoop Kepler is handig om planeten die op korte afstand rond hun ster draaien te ontdekken, maar minder geschikt om planeten op langere afstand ervan te spotten. De zogenaamde bewoonbare zone van sterren zoals onze zon ligt op een eerder grote afstand van de moederster en aardachtige exoplaneten zijn vrij klein. De Kepler-telescoop kan dus makkelijk heel wat aardachtige werelden missen. Nieuwe technologieën en instrumenten zullen in de toekomst dan ook een nauwkeurigere inschatting kunnen maken van het aantal aardachtige planeten in de kosmos. De schatting van zes miljard toont alvast aan dat de aarde en haar bewoners vermoedelijk niet zo uniek zijn.
WETENSCHAPEen kapotte voetbal. Daarop lijkt een mysterieus fossiel van 68 miljoen jaar oud dat werd aangetroffen op Seymour Island voor de kust van Antarctica. Maar nu blijkt dat het om een unieke vondst gaat: het fossiel is het op één na grootste ei dat ooit werd ontdekt en is mogelijk afkomstig van een zeereptiel uit het dinosaurustijdperk.
Het fossiele ei is 29 bij 20 centimeter groot en is daarmee net iets kleiner dan de eieren van de uitgestorven olifantsvogels die ooit op Madagascar leefden.

Wilde vogels, krokodilachtigen en verscheidene dinosauriërs legden eieren met een harde schaal, maar het Antarctische ei had een zachte, perkamentachtige schaal. “Dit nieuwe ei is het allereerste fossiele ei van Antartica en het grootste zacht ei dat ooit werd ontdekt”, zegt Lucas Legendre, paleontoloog aan de Universiteit van Texas en hoofdauteur van het onderzoek dat werd gepubliceerd in het wetenschappelijk tijdschrift Nature.
“Het ziet er een beetje uit als een platte voetbal: langgerekt, plat, met vele vouwen en plooien aan het oppervlak. Eén kant is platgedrukt, wat suggereert dat dit is waar het ei in contact kwam met de zeebodem. De eierschaal is erg dun en amper gemineraliseerd, zoals de eieren van hagedissen en slangen.”

De enige wezens die destijds op Antarctica leefden en groot genoeg waren om zo’n ei te leggen, waren zeereptielen, zoals de mosasaurus (maashagedis) en de plesiosaurus. De aanname dat deze dieren geen eieren legden, maar hun jongen levend ter wereld brachten, komt met de nieuwe vondst op losse schroeven te staan.
“We vermoeden dat deze grote reptielen dezelfde voortplantingsstrategie hadden als levendbarende hagedissen en slangen, die eieren leggen met een erg dunne schaal die onmiddellijk na het leggen uitkomen”, aldus Legendre.
Er werden geen resten van een embryo aangetroffen in het ei en het skelet van de moeder kon niet gevonden worden om te identificeren wat voor dier het ei had gelegd. Mogelijke opties zijn mosasaurussoorten tot 15 meter lang en plesiosaurussoorten tot 10 meter lang, aldus Legendre.

De mosasaurus en de plesiosaurus stierven uit met de andere dinosaurussoorten nadat een planetoïde zo’n 66 miljoen jaar geleden op de aarde insloeg.
Wetenschappers van de Universiteit van Chili en van het Chileense Natuurhistorisch Museum troffen het fossiel aan in 2011. Verbijsterd over hun vondst, noemden ze het aanvankelijk ‘The Thing’ (het ding, red.) naar de titel van een science-fictionfilm. “Toen we toekwamen in het kamp, vroegen we aan de geologen die ons vergezelden of ze ooit iets dergelijks hadden gezien”, zegt Rodrigo Otero, paleontologisch onderzoeker van de Universiteit van Chili. “Hun verbijsterde gelaatsuitdrukking sprak boekdelen.”

President Donald Trump has said he's heard some 'interesting things' about aliens, and, in an interview with his son Don Jr, unveiled a new campaign advert claiming Joe Biden has been endorsed by Osama bin Laden.
Trump made the comments Thursday in a Father's Day-themed interview with his eldest son, hosted by the president's reelection campaign.
The pair discuss Roswell, the New Mexico city known for its proximity to arguably most famous UFO event.
Don Jr asked his father if he would reveal what he had been told about alien life
'Before you leave office, will you let us know if there are aliens?' Don Jr said.
'Because this is the only thing I really want to know. Would you ever open up Roswell and let us know what's really going on.'
Trump responded: 'I won't talk to you about what I know about it, but it's very interesting.'
In 1947, a rancher discovered unidentifiable debris in his sheep pasture outside Roswell.
Air Force officials said it was a crashed weather balloon, but skeptics questioned whether it was in fact at extraterrestrial flying saucer.
Decades later the U.S. military acknowledged the debris was related to a top-secret atomic project.
Still, the UFO theory has flourished.
The president in the past has spoken skeptically about the possibility that there is something out there.
Last year Trump said he received a short briefing on UFO sighting, but also offered: 'People are saying they're seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly.'
After his father offered that he heard some 'interesting' things about Roswell, Trump Jr. asked the president might declassify that information someday.
'Well, I'll have to think about that one,' the president responded.

The secretive documents, first reported in 2012 by The Washington Post, outlined a plan to take out Obama and top U.S. military commander David Petraeus as they traveled by plane.
'The reason for concentrating on them is that Obama is the head of infidelity and killing him automatically will make [Vice President] Biden take over the presidency,' bin Laden wrote to a top deputy.
'Biden is totally unprepared for that post, which will lead the U.S. into a crisis.
'As for Petraeus, he is the man of the hour ... and killing him would alter the war's path' in Afghanistan.

'And essentially he's so grossly incompetent it would lead to the destruction of America.
'What does it say to you that, basically, the Democrat nominee got the posthumous Osama bin Laden endorsement? That this is the guy they put forth?'
Trump said he was unaware of it, but would 'immediately make a great commercial'.
Don Jr replied: 'That's your Father's Day present.'

It also seized on Biden's admission that, in April 2011, he advised Obama to wait for further confirmation that bin Laden was actually in the compound in Pakistan before acting.
Biden also, months later and ever since, claimed that in a one-on-one meeting with Obama immediately after the security council meeting, he told the president to 'follow your instincts,' knowing that the president was inclined at that time to move forward with the raid.
The new campaign was greeted with bemusement by Trump's adversaries.
'Can you smell the desperation?' said Tim Miller, an advisor for Republican Voters Against Trump.
Bill Kristol, an outspoken Republican critic of Trump, tweeted: 'The Trumps cavort in the gutter: "Bin Laden Endorsed Biden."
'This would be another moment, another opportunity, for decent Republicans who have yet to step forward to say, No, we cannot vote in 2020 for Donald Trump.'
Trump was asked about the economic performance of the U.S. under his presidency, and said he was doing well until 'the Chinese plague' came over.
He said his actions, though, had saved 'millions of lives'.
The president then addressed the protests that sprung up after the May 25 killing of George Floyd, saying that Seattle had been 'taken over' and saying it was 'sad' that Minneapolis was 'almost taken over'.
'You cannot go back to the bedlam,' he said. 'You'd have a situation like Seattle times a thousand.'
Don Jr described the election in November as 'the last hurrah of the swamp'.
Trump agreed, saying if the Democrats get in, the US will be in 'a recession, slash depression, the likes of which we've never seen before. You'll have another Seattle, another Minneapolis.'
He said he should have sent the National Guard in 'on night one'.
The interview cut to feature clips of riots, and Trump said that if he loses in November there will be 'another Seattle, another Minneapolis.' The president blamed Democrat mayors
Trump also divulged that he watched 'a couple' of episodes of Netflix's 'Tiger King.'
Joseph Maldonado-Passage, known as Joe Exotic, the star of the popular docuseries, is serving a 22-year prison sentence after he was convicted for hiring a hit man to murder a rival, the animal-rights activist.
Trump said during a April press briefing he was unfamiliar with the 'Tiger King' when asked about Don Jr. jokingly saying on a radio show that he was lobbying the president for a pardon for Maldonado-Passage.
The president on Thursday did not say whether he was considering a pardon but sounded intrigued by Maldonado-Passage.
'That's a whole strange deal going on,' Trump said.
'I'll tell you that's a strange guy and a lot of strange people surrounding him.'

De Amerikaanse president zei dat hij ‘niet gaat vertellen wat hij erover weet’. Hij wilde wel kwijt dat hij ‘interessante’ dingen over Roswell heeft gehoord, de plaats waar lang geleden een UFO zou zijn neergekomen. “Het is heel interessant.”

US President Donald Trump said he has heard “interesting” things about Roswell, the crash site of an alleged UFO.
Mr Trump made the comments in an interview with his son, who asked if the White House incumbent could “let us know what’s really going on”.
“I won’t talk to you about what I know about it, but it’s very interesting,” he replied.
Mr Trump in the past has spoken sceptically about the possibility that there is something out there.
The Father’s Day-themed interview was hosted by the president’s reelection campaign.

Joseph Maldonado-Passage, known as Joe Exotic, the star of the popular docu-series, is serving a 22-year prison sentence after he was convicted for hiring a hit man to murder a rival.
Mr Trump said during a press briefing in April that he was unfamiliar with Tiger King, after his son jokingly said on a radio show that he was lobbying the president for a pardon for Exotic.
The president on Thursday did not say when he was considering a pardon but sounded intrigued by the star of the show.
“That’s a whole strange deal going on,” Mr Trump said.
“I’ll tell you that’s a strange guy and a lot of strange people surrounding him.”
President Trump today had an interview and talked about having knowledge about the Roswell UFO crash from 1947. The president has exclusive access to such documents and people that he could learn the truth about aliens, but would he be courageous enough to release that info he learns to the public? I believe he would be. He has little fear of others and he knows the public could handle the truth. Here is a awesome discovery found by Sandra Elena Andrade of Youtube. She discovered two UFOs moving low over Peru. Each UFO is 8-9 meters long, thats almost 30 feet across! And both are flying only low about 10-20 meters from the ground. The UFOs are flying low because they came from an underground base just moments before the satellite took this Google map photo. The base they came from will be about 5-6 km below the surface area. There are many reports of Nazca lines, drawings in the desert of Peru said to be made by ancient tribes to honor the gods...this may not be true. The Nazca lines may have been made by the aliens themselves to remember locations, or to honor someone or something important in their society.

The NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope demonstrates its full range of imaging capabilities with two new images of planetary nebulae.
As nuclear fusion engines, most stars live placid lives for hundreds of millions to billions of years. But near the end of their lives they can turn into crazy whirligigs, puffing off shells and jets of hot gas.
Now, astronomers have used Hubble to dissect such crazy fireworks happening in these two planetary nebulae.
This image from the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope depicts NGC 7027, or the “Jewel Bug” nebula.
The object had been slowly puffing away its mass in quiet, spherically symmetric or perhaps spiral patterns for centuries — until relatively recently when it produced a new cloverleaf pattern.
New observations of the object have found unprecedented levels of complexity and rapid changes in the jets and gas bubbles blasting off of the star at the centre of the nebula.
This video zooms into the planetary nebula NGC 6302, commonly known as the Butterfly Nebula.
NGC 6302 lies within our Milky Way galaxy, roughly 3800 light-years away in the constellation of Scorpius. The glowing gas was once the star's outer layers, but has been expelled over about 2200 years. The butterfly shape stretches for more than two light-years, which is about half the distance from the Sun to the nearest star, Proxima Centauri.
The Hubble Space Telescope has imaged these objects before, but not for many years and never before with the Wide Field Camera 3 instrument across its full wavelength range - making observations in near-ultraviolet to near-infrared light. "These new multi-wavelength Hubble observations provide the most comprehensive view to date of both of these spectacular nebulae, reports phys.org.
Several days ago, NASA's Solar Terrestrial Relations Observatory, or STEREO-A H2 spacecraft, captured images of a huge object which flies in an arc through space near the sun.
It is not the first time unidentified flying object have been spotted passing through an area near the sun and although NASA is aware of these UFOs playing around the sun, they don't want talk about it.
The video below shows the UFO in normal view and in close-up when it travels with an incredible speed through space.

Neanderthal Mini-Brains
To study how early humans related to the ancient human subspecies known as Neanderthals, CNN reports, a team of European scientists grew mini-brains from human stem cells that contain Neanderthal DNA and proteins.
“We were curious how much of the Neanderthal genome could be explored if you just have access to stem cells from the right people,” Grayson Camp, lead author of a new study published in the journal Stem Cell Reports today and genomics PhD at the Institute of Molecular and Clinical Ophthalmology in Switzerland, told CNN.
DNA Similarities
The team analyzed genomes from individuals with Northern European descent and compared them to a reference Neanderthal genome created in 2010 by geneticist Svante Pääbo “to figure out which parts were likely derived from Neanderthals and which parts were not,” according to Camp.
“Per individual, there’s something like between 1 percent and 4 percent of the genome likely derived from Neanderthals,” he added.
Brain Blobs
From there, the team grew three-dimensional blobs of brain tissue inside a petri dish. These tiny brains, also called organoids, are often used to test the effects of drugs.
They are specifically not “lab-grown Neanderthal brains,” as Camp assured CNN. “These are human cells, they’re not Neanderthal cells but human cells that have Neanderthal DNA naturally inside them,” Camp said.
The research also could give us insight into the early diet of Neanderthals, he said, and how their traits shaped human ones over thousands of years.
Debris from a comet may have leveled an ancient village in Syria during a spate of several such explosions occurring around the world, according to new research.
The village of Abu Hureyra was a mound settlement in northern Syria around 13,000 years ago. The site was quickly excavated in 1972 and 1973, before the Euphrates River was dammed, flooding the site beneath Lake Assad. But the hurried excavations exposed charcoal-rich surfaces containing glass spheres formed from melting soil, melted iron- and sulfur-rich samples, and nanodiamonds. Such materials are all indicators of extremely high temperatures like those produced by a chunk of rock exploding in the air.
A team led by Andrew Moore, an archeologist at the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York who led the emergency excavations of the site in the '70s, recently reexamined some of the excavated material in greater detail. The scientists then developed experimental methods to replicate the materials they discovered at the village.
"These provided new insights into how the meltglass was formed and how plant and other materials became incorporated in it," Moore told Space.com by email.
Melting the minerals found in the soil requires temperatures over 3,630 degrees Fahrenheit (2,000 degrees Celsius), "hot enough to cause the quartz grains to boil," Moore said. That suggests something cataclysmic.
"It is impossible to explain these melted minerals on meltglass by any natural process other than a cosmic impact event," Moore said.
A deadly explosion
The first settlers of Abu Hureyra were hunter-gatherers who lived off the land. A terrible drought drove the people to begin cultivating grains that they had previously collected from the wild, turning them into the first known farmers, previous research has revealed.
Then, about 13,000 years ago, something very bad seems to have occurred, leaving a layer of carbon suggesting dramatic fires. But for much of the last decade, scientists inspecting the remnants of the village have debated what happened, unable to decide whether the carbon formed during an airburst or during more mundane fires among the thatched huts.
So Moore decided to reexamine the glass in more detail. His analysis of the glass composition matched a 2012 finding claiming an airburst had destroyed Abu Hureyra, suggesting that the villagers' bucolic lifestyle ended suddenly when one or more fragments from a passing comet exploded in the air nearby.
"People who were in or near the village of Abu Hureyra at the time the airburst exploded would have seen an immense flash in the sky, equivalent to a nuclear explosion," Moore said. "A few seconds later, they would have been incinerated by the blast emanating from the airburst. The heat wave destroyed the village and everything in it, leaving a layer of burned material across the surface."
Observers several tens of kilometers from the site would have seen the flash, heard the explosion, and felt the heatwave, but likely survived the detonation.
Moore and his colleagues heated fragments of the glass in a laboratory furnace until they had fully melted, which occurred at 2,400 F (1,300 C), establishing a lower limit for the temperature the spheroids had originally been exposed to. But it took higher temperatures for the quartz and other particles on the exterior to melt.
The researchers also compared the Abu Hureyra material with glass melted at other prehistoric impact sites on Earth and found many similarities. The wealth of meltglass dating to roughly the same timeframe suggests to researchers that thousands of pieces of debris shed from a comet slammed into Earth's atmosphere 12,800 years ago, impacting more than 40 sites across North America and Europe.
The new findings by Moore's team match a 2007 hypothesis that Earth experienced several multi-continental airbursts. Since an individual comet or asteroid large enough to cause such widespread destruction is unlikely, the researchers suspect the disparate impacts were possibly caused by cometary debris.
"The largest cometary debris clusters are proposed to be capable of causing thousands of airbursts within a span of minutes across one entire hemisphere of Earth," the authors wrote. "An encounter with such a million-km-wide debris cluster would be thousands of times more probable than a collision with a 100-km-wide comet or a 10-km-wide asteroid."
Using a groundbreaking new model, scientists have calculated that there may be up to six billion Earth-like planets in the Milky Way galaxy, reviving hopes that colonization among the stars may still, one day, be viable.
So far, humanity has confirmed the existence of 4,164 exoplanets, most of which are gas or ice giants similar to Jupiter or Neptune. At present, there are an estimated 100 to 400 billion stars in the Milky Way, roughly seven percent of which are similar in composition and size to our sun. These are known as G-type main-sequence stars.
Michelle Kunimoto from the University of British Columbia (UBC) in Canada, an expert in exoplanets, applied a technique known as forward modelling to a database of 200,000 stars studied by the Kepler planet-hunter between 2009 and 2018, to see how many potential new Earths could be out there orbiting around these stars.
“My calculations place an upper limit of 0.18 Earth-like planets per G-type star,” Kunimoto, who recently discovered an additional 17 exoplanets in Kepler space telescope data, said. Previous estimates noted a frequency of between 0.2 and one potentially habitable planets per sun-like star.
“Estimating how common different kinds of planets are around different stars, can provide important constraints on planet formation and evolution theories, and help optimise future missions dedicated to finding exoplanets.”
The distances involved in the Kepler data set make it harder to spot the smaller, rocky planets similar to Earth and Mars, because we detect faraway planets based on the impact they have on their stars. The smaller the planet, the smaller the impact on its star and thus, the harder they are to spot.
While frustrating, this indicates that there are likely far more exoplanets out there than we have yet discovered using current methods.
Kunimoto simulated the full population of exoplanets around the stars observed and studied by Kepler, and marked each as 'detected' or 'missed' based on how likely it was that the forward modelling technique was to have found them.
She then compared her findings with the actual catalogue to test the accuracy of the modelling technique and found that, given the degree of accuracy contained therein, the potential maximum of exoplanets in the Milky Way is somewhere in the region of six billion planets.
The real number will likely be much smaller, once their habitability and other factors are taken into account, but it’s a good starting point and one that inspires confidence in finding some likely candidates for colonization at some point in humanity's future.
Potentially habitable planets are defined as between .75 and 1.5 times the mass of the Earth, orbiting a G-type star at a distance of between 0.99 and 1.7 times the distance between the Earth and our sun, inhabiting the so-called Goldilocks zone where the planet could host liquid water and, therefore, life.

Last week the channel claimed to have found evidence of a dinosaur or horse skull in different NASA images which had been beamed back to Earth by the Curiosity Rover, a 4WD droid currently exploring the Red Planet surface.
The blurb added: "This added with my previous video of a dinosaur skull found by the Curiosity Rover, confirms without doubt that Mars did have life on it."
NASA insists it has found no evidence of any life on Mars yet and just traces of surface water.
It believes that nothing more than microscopic lifeforms are likely to have begun before Mars was robbed of its atmosphere by the sun and lost all its former oceans.
NASA scientists and other sceptics say the alien chasers are wrong, and these so-called amazing discoveries are the results of pareidolia, when the brain tricks the eyes into seeing familiar objects or shapes in patterns or textures such as rock surfaces.
Paranormal Crucible has also been heavily criticised for using colourisation and other editing techniques to enhance the images to make them look more like what they say they have found.
