This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

MUFON's mission is the analytical and scientific investigation of the UFO- Phenomenon for the benefit of humanity... Je kan ook hun site bekijken onder www.mufon.com. Ze geven een maandelijks tijdschrift uit, namelijk The MUFON UFO-Journal. Since 02/01/2020 is Pieter ex-president (=voorzitter) of BUFON, but also ex-National Director MUFON / Flanders and the Netherlands. We work together with the French MUFON Reseau MUFON/EUROP.

Why 2015 Was a Weird Year for UFO Sightings
We're no closer to finding intelligent life from other planets and we might be farther from finding it at home.

Mankind’s relationship to space changed in 2015: Not only did we find liquid water on Mars, the commercial space race heated up, making our own starry ambition seems more plausible than ever. But we didn’t find life and life didn’t find us — at least not in a verifiable way. UFOs were spotted, sure, but they stayed stubbornly U.

The most exciting and provocative alleged UFO sighting actually came from someone who probably has a better view for spotting them than anybody else: Astronaut Scott Kelly was floating 259 miles above the surface of the Earth aboard the International Space Station when he snapped and tweeted this pic:

Immediately, people began asking what that mysterious glint of light was in the corner. What could it be?

The answer, it turns out, was: “Lot of stuff.” Forbes made a pretty convincing argument that it was the High Definition Earth-Viewing System mounted on a module attached to the ISS. Light from the instrument seems to have reflected back at Kelly’s camera as he took the picture. In fact, you can see this much more clearly when you increase the contrast on the image:

That’s a letdown, sure. But there were plenty of other big, weird sightings throughout the year. There were strange lights flying over Los Angeles a few weeks ago, but the Navy claimed responsibility, saying it was part of a missile test flight off the Pacific coast.

Naturally, not everyone bought that explanation.

Lenticular clouds freaked out a bunch of people over in Cape Cod, South Africa last month. And, to be fair, the whole thing did look an awful lot likeIndependence Day. In this instance, however, it’s much easier to accept a scientific explanation involving strange variations in the atmosphere. Still looks freaky though:

    Follow
Did you notice the UFO's flying over #capetown yesterday? 👽 Photo by @mijlof 📷

There were two big UFO sightings in India this year — one in June documented by a fifth grade student; and another, much larger object snapped by an individual who claims to have seen the mysterious ship rotating in the air. Both sightings were in the state of Uttar Pradesh and so far, there aren’t any clear explanations as to what they might have been.

That doesn’t necessarily mean those and other UFOs are signs of extraterrestrial objects zipping around through our sky. There are actually a ton of rational explanations for UFOs, ranging from aircraft balloons, aberrations of light, natural objects from space, and even birds. And ticking off those things from the list doesn’t mean it must be a ship from another planet.

Mankind’s constantly increasing access to the internet certainly hasn’t helped people keep a more rational mind about what they’re seeing. Just Google “UFO” one of these days and get lost in a k-hole community of people who are convinced those are alien objects coming to abduct human beings and signing secret deals with the government. In addition, the ubiquity of smartphones means everyone can document whatever strange things they see, and immediately post it to social media. Insert an appropriate hashtag like #UFO or #aliens or #FlyingSaucer. One can get lost in the pile of evidence.

Unfortunately, although smartphone cameras are getting better with every month, they’re still subject to a lot of the deficiencies that limit pretty much any kind of photographic equipment. Strange light or reflections can appear much brighter than they actually are. They might obscure the focus of an object and make it look more strange than it really is. While a lot of cameras allow you to manipulate the image quality in ways that offset those problems, most people neglect to do that before they send something straight to Twitter.

The only UFO this year that actually got scientists’ attention was the WT1190F object that burned up in Earth’s atmosphere about four weeks ago, over the Indian Ocean. No one was really what that piece of debris was, but scientists were pretty sure it was the remnants of some old rocketry equipment used in a previous launch.

Scientists were pretty excited about studying WT1190F reentry into Earth’s atmosphere to study the behavior of how objects plummet down from space into the Earth. It’s unclear yet what they found, but it ought to lead to some insights as to how meteors crash into Earth, and how humans can build better heat shields on spacecraft that are carrying astronauts back to Earth.

Famous UFO cases: Kaikoura lights – New Zealand, 1978

UFOs! Obnoxious lights spate the sky!

    Kaikoura, N.Z.

Is UFO a meteor or a shooting star? Or Kaikoura lights? The famous UFO Sighting took place in New Zealand in December 1978. In the annals of these alleged UFO sightings, this wasn’t the first of its kind, but definitely the biggest conundrums of New Zealand. The title Kaikoura lights was coined by the media, to memorialize the Kaikoura mountain ranges where the inexplicable phenomenon was perceived.
The conception of this random encounter, with an anonymous target detected on the air base radio was a scare for the Argosy freighter on December 21st, 1978. The aerial vehicle displayed eccentric behavior. For a moment, it would vanish into thin air and in the next; it would re-emerge from a different direction. As put by the pilot, the gleaming lights pulsated intermittently. Consequently, an investigation was called for, pertinent to these UFO sightings. On December 30, 1978, a television crew from Australia rendered a peripheral film for a network show aired on the interviews about these UFO sightings. Aboard the plane, one of the crew members’s claimed to have witnessed a streak of lights and then disappeared abruptly. Struck with astonishment, the pilot turned the plane to get a perspective of what was after them. Only this time, the crew got a 30 second tape recording on the object. After a substantial success, the plane landed safely at its destination, with the UFO still beeping a red dot on the radar.

Following the nature of events that took place that night, theNew Zealand air force was on high alert to intercept any detectable UFOs in sight. One whimsical interpretation purported by the media was that the crew on the air plane had apprehended Venus that night. On the legal front, the police collaborated with the air force to investigate into the matter but later, the famous UFO case of Kaikoura lights, 1978, was referred to the UFO cases department in the intelligence agencies.

The Kaikoura Lights New Zealand UFO Sighting
The Kaikoura Lights is a name given by the New Zealand media to a series of sightings that occurred in December 1978, over the skies above the Kaikoura mountain ranges of the northeastern South Island of New Zealand. The first sightings were made on December 21 when the crew of a Safe Air Ltd cargo aircraft began observing a series of strange lights around their Armstrong Whitworth AW.660 Argosy aircraft, which tracked along with their aircraft for several minutes before disappearing and then reappearing elsewhere. The pilots described some of the lights to be the size of a house and others small but flashing brilliantly. These objects appeared on the air traffic controller radar in Wellington and also on the aircraft’s on-board radar. The objects were also seen by hundreds of people on the ground.
On December 30, 1978, a television crew from Australia recorded background film for a network show on interviews about the sightings. For many minutes at a time on the flight to Christchurch, unidentified lights were observed by five people on the flight deck, were tracked by Wellington Air Traffic Controllers, and filmed in color by the television crew. One object reportedly followed the aircraft almost until landing. The cargo plane then took off again with the television crew still on board, heading for Blenheim. When the aircraft reached about 2000 feet, it encountered a gigantic lighted orb, which fell into station off the wing tip and tracked along with the cargo aircraft for almost quarter of an hour, while being filmed, watched, tracked on the aircraft radar and described on a tape recording made by the TV film crew.

UFO – Kaikoura Coast, New Zealand, January 3, 1979
A UFO over Kaikoura Coast, New Zealand on January 3, 1979.

    Kaikoura UFO
It has been almost 30 years since unidentified flying objects were observed off the coast of Kaikoura during the Christmas/New Year break of 1978.
The sightings are to be marked soon with a commemorative flight, a gathering of enthusiasts and even a musical.
At the time, news of the sightings was reported worldwide and to this day they remain a huge source of controversy.
But the remarkable thing about the sightings is whatever was flying around that night was not just observed, it showed up on radar too and was caught on film.
It is one of New Zealand’s biggest mysteries and one of the world’s best documented sightings of a UFO.
“The most important thing I think about his story is that even to this day, the flight crew and the air traffic controllers are adamant that we saw something highly unusual that can’t be explained in mundane terms,” says journalist Quentin Fogarty. “Now, 30 years later, they still believe that.”
Mr Fogarty was the reporter, with a news crew, that filmed the UFOs on an Argosy freight plane the night of the December 30, 1978.

FBI Stunningly Confirms “Beings Are Visiting Us From Other Dimensions”

    (Before It's News)

    FBI Confirms 1

While writing my previous post, The Shadow People – ‘Interdimensional Beings’ Being Seen By Many, I was shocked to learn that people like Albert Einstein and Stephen Hawking both though it was entirely possible we were being visited on “shadow people” from other dimension.

The way they explained it, there are four actual dimensions, and because space-time has the ability to bend light, it is possible that people (or beings) in one dimension can see the shadows of people (or beings) from another dimensions.

More specifically, they said there are three dimensions of space, and one dimension of time, and while it is believed that Shadow People can possibly be seen, according to Stephen Hawking, matter and light are confined to the “membrane” of the dimension they reside in, therefor full scale interdimensional travel he says, is not possible.

Much of the rest of that post goes on to take a very different view than Stephen Hawking, but as I looked into the matter further, imagine my surprise when I learned the FBI “Beings Are Visiting Us From Other Dimensions.”

There has been much talk nowadays about inter-dimensional worlds, especially what with the Large Hadron Collider in CERN officially being fired back up recently to go hunting for them.  Whilst we are all considering where the Aliens could be coming from and IF other Dimensions are actually a fact rather than Fiction, along comes this VERY important piece of evidence courtesy of the F.B.I!

And this is a very true story people, the FBI admitted that we have been visited by “beings from other dimensions” and the official link from the FBI vault can be found here: vault.fbi.gov

To be fair it is very surprising that the FBI have shown such a vast amount of interest in the whole study of the UF phenomena?! But is it really that surprising when people have been reporting UFO sightings pretty much since the beginning of time, no not really!  I guess it could even be possible that there are a lot of science fiction movies that are actually based on real events, or as some may even call them “leaks” to the general public, given by the government in order to deliberately raise awareness among the population? Subconsciously planting that seed into all of our brains that the Aliens truly are with us!

Close Encounters Of The Third Kind – Could it be that some Science Fiction films have been made to ‘educate’ us about Aliens?

Back in 2011 after there were some important documents which had been “declassified” a report written by a special agent of the FBI in 1947 reached the public. This particular FBI special agent, who was a lieutenant colonel whose identity has remained anonymous because of “national security” had gathered numerous amounts of data on the UFO phenomena after interviewing and studying the phenomena for many years.

According to some of these exciting yet slightly bizarre unexpected reports and “Declassified” documents, we have been visited by numerous extra-terrestrial beings, some of whom, are not only from other planets beyond our own, but also from other dimensions. Apparently some of these Alien beings originate from an ‘ethereal plane coexistent’ within our physical universe. These incredible “entities”, that apparently can “materialize” on our very own planet appeared as huge ‘translucent figures’.

    FBI Confirms 5

Giant ‘translucent figures’ are visiting Planet Earth – according to the FBI

Please see below a transcript of some of the most important details of the report that you all need to know about:

    1. Part of the disks carry crews, others are under remote control

    2. Their mission is peaceful. The visitors contemplate settling on this plane

    3. These visitors are human-like but much larger in size

    4. They are not excarnate Earth people, but come from their own world

    5. They do NOT come from a planet as we use the word, but from an etheric planet which interpenetrates with our own and is not perceptible to us

    6. The bodies of the visitors, and the craft, automatically materialize on entering the vibratory rate of our dense matter

    7. The disks posses a type of radiant energy or a ray, which will easily disintegrate any attacking ship. They reenter the etheric at will, and so simply disappear from our vision, without trace

    8. The region from which they come is not the “astral plane”, but corresponds to the Lokas or Talas. Students of osoteric matters will understand these terms.

    9. They probably can not be reached by radio, but probably can be by radar. if a signal system can be devised for that (apparatus)

Addendum: The Lokas are oval shape, fluted length oval with a heat-resistaning metal or alloy not yet known the front cage contains the controls, the middle portion a laboratory; the rear contains armament, which consists essentially of a powerful energy apparatus, perhaps a ray.

    SUMMARY

Although some of the above can come across a little confusing and not very clear, you can certainly get the gist that they are talking about (in certain areas of the report) the types of craft that are entering our planets atmosphere! Many UFO sightings show the craft as appearing as if its ‘pulsing’ almost changing in shape in our atmosphere, could the above suggest that these crafts are possibly doing this due to being from another ‘Unknown’ Dimension? It definitely appears that way!

Many Orbs that are being seen around the world appear to have a similar energy force around them, as well as other UFO’s captured on Camera, almost like they are not quite real, or put it in a better way relevant to the text below, they almost appear ‘not of this world’.

Please see below a great capture above New York recently which gives a great example of one of these types of craft.  Note how its pulsing and changing in different shape, and please also note that this craft is in a strict ‘No Fly Zone’

Perhaps reports and research by those who rule this planet over the last so many years, have created the desire to search for where these Inter-dimensional Beings are coming from ~ Just perhaps this is why we now have our very own ‘Alien Technology’ hunting other worldly Dimensions……the Large Hadron Collider at CERN!

    Einstein's Theory of General Relativity

    Einstein's Theory of General Relativity
Einstein's theory of general relativity predicted that the space-time around Earth would be not only warped but also twisted by the planet's rotation. Gravity Probe B showed this to be correct.

Editor's Note (Feb. 11): Gravitational waves predicted by Albert Einstein's general theory of relativity have been detected directly at last. Einstein was right. You can see our full discovery story herea video on the find here; and our complete coverage of the historic scientific discovery here.

In 1905, Albert Einstein determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and that the speed of light in a vacuum was independent of the motion of all observers. This was the theory of special relativity. It introduced a new framework for all of physics and proposed new concepts of space and time.

Einstein then spent 10 years trying to include acceleration in the theory and published his theory of general relativity in 1915. In it, he determined that massive objects cause a distortion in space-time, which is felt as gravity.

Two objects exert a force of attraction on one another known as "gravity." Sir Isaac Newton quantified the gravity between two objects when he formulated his three laws of motion. The force tugging between two bodies depends on how massive each one is and how far apart the two lie. Even as the center of the Earth is pulling you toward it (keeping you firmly lodged on the ground), your center of mass is pulling back at the Earth. But the more massive body barely feels the tug from you, while with your much smaller mass you find yourself firmly rooted thanks to that same force. Yet Newton's laws assume that gravity is an innate force of an object that can act over a distance.

Albert Einstein, in his theory of special relativity, determined that the laws of physics are the same for all non-accelerating observers, and he showed that the speed of light within a vacuum is the same no matter the speed at which an observer travels. As a result, he found that space and time were interwoven into a single continuum known as space-time. Events that occur at the same time for one observer could occur at different times for another.

As he worked out the equations for his general theory of relativity, Einstein realized that massive objects caused a distortion in space-time. Imagine setting a large body in the center of a trampoline. The body would press down into the fabric, causing it to dimple. A marble rolled around the edge would spiral inward toward the body, pulled in much the same way that the gravity of a planet pulls at rocks in space. [Video: How To See Spacetime Stretch]

Although instruments can neither see nor measure space-time, several of the phenomena predicted by its warping have been confirmed.

Einstein's Cross is an example of gravitational lensing.

    Gravitational lensing:

Light around a massive object, such as a black hole, is bent, causing it to act as a lens for the things that lie behind it. Astronomers routinely use this method to study stars and galaxies behind massive objects.

Einstein's Cross, a quasar in the Pegasus constellation, is an excellent example of gravitational lensing. The quasar is about 8 billion light-years from Earth, and sits behind a galaxy that is 400 million light-years away. Four images of the quasar appear around the galaxy because the intense gravity of the galaxy bends the light coming from the quasar.

Gravitational lensing can allow scientists to see some pretty cool things, but until recently, what they spotted around the lens has remained fairly static. However, since the light traveling around the lens takes a different path, each traveling over a different amount of time, scientists were able to observe a supernova occur four different times as it was magnified by a massive galaxy.

In another interesting observation, NASA's Kepler telescope spotted a dead star, known as a white dwarf, orbiting a red dwarf in a binary system. Although the white dwarf is more massive, it has a far smaller radius than its companion.

"The technique is equivalent to spotting a flea on a light bulb 3,000 miles away, roughly the distance from Los Angeles to New York City," Avi Shporer of the California Institute of Technology said in a statement.

Changes in the orbit of Mercury:

The orbit of Mercury is shifting very gradually over time, due to the curvature of space-time around the massive sun. In a few billion years, it could even collide with Earth.

Frame-dragging of space-time around rotating bodies:

The spin of a heavy object, such as Earth, should twist and distort the space-time around it. In 2004, NASA launched the Gravity Probe B (GP-B). The precisely calibrated satellite caused the axes of gyroscopes inside to drift very slightly over time, a result that coincided with Einstein's theory.

"Imagine the Earth as if it were immersed in honey," Gravity Probe-B principal investigator Francis Everitt, of Stanford University, said in a statement.

"As the planet rotates, the honey around it would swirl, and it's the same with space and time. GP-B confirmed two of the most profound predictions of Einstein's universe, having far-reaching implications across astrophysics research."

    Gravitational redshift:

The electromagnetic radiation of an object is stretched out slightly inside a gravitational field. Think of the sound waves that emanate from a siren on an emergency vehicle; as the vehicle moves toward an observer, sound waves are compressed, but as it moves away, they are stretched out, or redshifted. Known as the Doppler Effect, the same phenomena occurs with waves of light at all frequencies. In 1959, two physicists, Robert Pound and Glen Rebka, shot gamma-rays of radioactive iron up the side of a tower at Harvard University and found them to be minutely less than their natural frequency due to distortions caused by gravity.

    Gravitational waves:

Violent events, such as the collision of two black holes, are thought to be able to create ripples in space-time known as gravitational waves. The Laser Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) is currently searching for the first signs of these tell-tale indicators.

In 2014, scientists announced that they had detected gravitational waves left over from the Big Bang using the Background Imaging of Cosmic Extragalactic Polarization (BICEP2) telescope in Antarctica. Such waves are thought to be embedded in the cosmic microwave background. However, further research revealed that their data was contaminated by dust in the line of sight.

"Searching for this unique record of the very early universe is as difficult as it is exciting," Jan Tauber, the European Space Agency's project scientist for the Planck space mission to search for cosmic waves, said in a statement.

Team members of NASA's Mars Science Laboratory mission took a test rover to Dumont Dunes in California's Mojave Desert this week to improve knowledge of the best way to operate a similar rover, Curiosity, currently flying to Mars for an August landing.

The test rover that they put through paces on various sandy slopes has a full-scale version of Curiosity's mobility system, but it is otherwise stripped down so that it weighs about the same on Earth as Curiosity will weigh in the lesser gravity of Mars.

Information collected in these tests on windward and downwind portions of dunes will be used by the rover team in making decisions about driving Curiosity on dunes near a mountain in the center of Gale Crater.

First, however, the Mars Science Laboratory spacecraft, launched Nov. 26, 2011, must put Curiosity safely onto the ground. Safe landing on Mars is never assured, and this mission will use innovative methods to land the heaviest vehicle in the smallest target area ever attempted on Mars. Advances in landing heavier payloads more precisely are steps toward eventual human missions to Mars.

Curiosity is on track for landing the evening of Aug. 5, 2012, PDT (early on Aug. 6, Universal Time and EDT) to begin a two-year prime mission. Researchers plan to use Curiosity to study layers in Gale Crater's central mound, Mount Sharp. The mission will investigate whether the area has ever offered an environment favorable for microbial life.

NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, a division of the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, manages the mission for the NASA Science Mission Directorate, Washington.

Beware Falling Rocks: Asteroid Day Will Highlight Impact Risks

An international band of asteroid experts gathered Tuesday to discuss the future of asteroid research and avoidance in preparation for the second annual Asteroid Day.

On June 30, 1908, a large meteorite or comet exploded above the remote Russian countryside, flattening 770 square miles (1,990 square kilometers) of forest. Now, June 30 is Asteroid Day, part of a campaign to raise awareness of the dangers of an asteroid strike on Earth.

At a press conference Feb. 9, the organizations behind Asteroid Day announced their plans for the latest effort, inviting a panel of experts to speak about the need for more study of asteroids as well as a commitment to preventing a large body from striking the Earth. The event was held at the European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC). [Near-Earth Asteroids: Famous Space Rock Flybys and Close Calls]

Strikes from asteroids and comets big enough to threaten people are rare in any given year, but over time they are just about inevitable, the researchers said. For instance, on Feb. 13, 2015, a meteor fell near Chelyabinsk, Russia, and exploded some 18 miles (29 km) above the Earth's surface, the shock wave breaking windows and causing injuries to 1,500 people.

"An event like Chelyabinsk happens about once every 50 years, and we don't have a system designed to discover and track these things," Mark Boslough, a physicist at Sandia National Laboratories who is one of the founders of Asteroid Day, said at the conference.

(Even more recently, reports came in of a meteorite that may have killed a person in India, but it is unclear whether the object was actually a meteorite.)

At a press conference Feb. 9, researchers gathered in Noordwijk, Netherlands, to announce Asteroid Day 2016. The European Space Agency's director of technical and quality management, Franco Ongaro, is pictured on the screen.

The organizers of Asteroid Day, among them Brian May, an astrophysicist and former guitarist for the rock band Queen, noted that concerted efforts are needed to find asteroids that might collide with the Earth, and to send spacecraft to study them.

"This is not about fearmongering," said Grig Richters, filmmaker and co-founder of Asteroid Day. "It's about being aware there is a potential threat, and understanding better where we are from."

"Bringing space technology to bear to deflect asteroids will require widespread public support," said Tom Jones, a former space shuttle astronaut who also chairs the Association of Space Explorers' Committee on Near-Earth Objects. "We only need modest resources compared to the cost of absorbing impact. Asteroid Day is to educate the public so we can work together to avoid an impact."

To that end, the scientists who came to ESTEC highlighted some of the work being done to study asteroids — to learn more about them, understand what they are made of and come up with better strategies for preventing a disaster by avoiding getting hit.

One such mission is the proposed Asteroid Impact & Deflection Assessment (AIDA). Planned for a 2020 launch, the spacecraft in this mission would approach the asteroid 65803 Didymos, a binary asteroid that consists of two bodies, one about 800 meters (2,600 feet) across and the other about 150 m (490 feet) across. The craft would orbit the larger of the two bodies, launching a 660-lb. (300 kilograms) impactor at the smaller asteroid as it makes a close approach to the Earth. (While Didymos can get within a few million miles of the planet, there's no danger the object will hit Earth.)

Researchers would measure how much the impact moves the smaller asteroid, and how the asteroid's structure and surface hold up after the strike. [100-Foot Asteroid to Buzz Earth Next Month]

Aside from sending probes to investigate what asteroids are made of, the first big task is to catalogue where the possible threats are, said Detlef Koschny, the Space Situational Awareness Near-Earth Object co-manager at the European Space Agency. ESA established a near-Earth object segment in 2008 to help Europe detect such asteroids by observing wide swathes of the sky. One part of the program, at the University of Pisa in Italy, will track where the asteroids are going; ESA is also discussing further work with other countries.

In Europe, a prototype telescope that can scan the whole sky should be in place next year, said Patrick Michel, a planetary scientist and senior researcher at the French National Centre for Scientific Research. (He noted that the United States has its own efforts in place as well.) And citizens can help, too, he said: "You need to make sure you observe an object again, to make sure we don't lose it again. Amateur astronomers play an important role."

Detection is so important because the further out you find an asteroid, the easier it is to move it, the researchers said. The nuclear bomb approach, made famous by the movie "Armageddon" (and the 1979 film "Meteor") would only be worth doing if there is very little warning, Boslough said, "and we wouldn't be able to test it in space."

The technology, he said, isn't ready yet in any case.

Famed science communicator Bill Nye was also a panelist, and said since humans have the capacity to alter asteroid paths if necessary, it behooves humanity to do it. "We've no evidence the dinosaurs had a space program," he said, "and it cost them."

    Burbage historian recalls Hinckley's UFO

"I hoped that one day I would see a UFO – but did not really believe that it would happen"

    UFO 2
    UFO

Steven Spielberg’s film Close Encounters of the Third Kind was released in 1977 upon a mainly unsuspecting public, although UFOs sightings have been reported around the world for some years prior to 1977.

With the release of the film sightings increased dramatically no doubt the film made us much more aware of the possibility of visitors from outer space and, thereafter, we were observing the night sky and also the daytime sky much more than we had in the past.

I must admit that the film fired my imagination. I hoped that one day I would see a UFO – but did not really believe that it would happen.

Well happed it did, and not on one of the occasions when I was searching the night sky – in fact, I was driving my car when the sensational event began.

It was the evening of Mayday 23rd October 1978. At the time I lived on Hinckley’s Hollycroft estate.

On Monday evenings I drove my wife to Hinckley College to a class that she attended.

On this particular Monday I was driving up Hollycroft Hill at about 6.35pm when my wife said: “what is that strange object in the sky?”

I glanced in the direction of the Gas Works in Coventry Road and saw it for myself.

The object appeared to be delta in shape and had lights dotted around it. On arriving at the junction of Upper and Lower Bond Street I observed that the object was high in the sky over the direction of the Borough.

I drove along Lower Bond Street into Council Road and then into Stockwell Head.

All the time my wife was saying the object was overhead. My curiosity overcame me and I pulled into the parking area near to the Concordia Theatre. I noticed that tow or three other cars were doing the same thing.

We got out of the car – as did other people – and looked up. Immediately above us was the object.

It was now perfectly still. How high I could not say. There was no sound coming from it.

There appeared to be some kind of observation cabin below the main structure, which seemed to have numerous windows from which lights flashed on and off.

We all held our breath not knowing what was going to happen next, when all of a sudden there was a loud “whoosh” and then the object had vanished. My wife and I spoke with the other people.

None of us could say what it was we had really seen.

I believe it was a UFO in the true sense of the word. If our Government or any other earthly power was testing some new kind of flying machine, then they have certainly kept it quiet for the past years.

Recently, I discussed the incident with someone far more learned in astronomy than I am, and his belief is that it is impossible that it could have come from another planet.

Well, I can only say what I saw. It certainly was no hallucination as a number of other people had also seen it.

So what did we see on the night of the 23rd October 1978? Whatever it was, it was an unnerving and thrilling experience.

UFO Hunting Satellite Is Coming To Space

    ufo-hunter

UFO images and videos seem to appear every day near the International Space Station. Most of the times, the alleged UFOs in the pictures turn out to be a space debris, light reflections, an antenna attached to the station, and among other usual things.

Howeck said that they got the satellite through the Interorbital Systems, and they will also do the launch as part of the package of buying the satellite. The more fund the team can get, the more scientific equipment can be included on board.ver, it would be interesting to know that someone might launch a satellite into Earth’s orbit with the very particular mission, and that is to detect and prove unknown objects out there.

A team of researchers known as CubeSat for Disclosure aims to use a low-orbit satellite controlled by them to study potential objects in Earth’s atmosphere. They hope to find and verify a real extraterrestrial craft. They are planning to open-source the data to the individuals.

The CubeSat for Disclosure team will launch a little satellite with infrared, electromagnetic and radiation sensors, and two cameras that are capable of photographing a full 360 degrees.

There are many reports seeing UFOs near the ISS, but the video feeds suddenly cut out without apparent reasons. Project coordinator Dave Shock says that this will not happen if they can control the images. He explains that nobody will corrupt or alter the data, so the alleged government cover-up won’t be happening.

CubeSat for Disclosure, however, doesn’t have the launch date yet, and they are still raising more money to pack the satellite as much instrumentation as possible. The team is using the air and spaceport Interorbital Systems out of the Mojave Desert.

ShoShock said that they got the satellite through the Interorbital Systems, and they will also do the launch as part of the package of buying the satellite. The more fund the team can get, the more scientific equipment can be included on board.

REVEAL the FULL HISTORY of UFOs -- BEFORE AIRPLANES were invented
Research has flourished...from collections and museums all over the world

Research has flourished in the last five years, with remarkable material added and unique color images obtained from collections and museums all over the world. With the manuscript completed, and the prototype prepared, we now need your help to independently publish this next generation of Wonders that takes the study and research of UFOs to a higher level. We hope you will support our campaign and come to love your book for both its artistic beauty and scientific merit.

Only 350 Signed and Numbered Copies

This new unique Limited Edition (only 500 signed, numbered and slipcased copies will ever be produced) represents the culmination of many years of exhaustive scientific research. Since the original publication of Wonders in the Sky, two of the world's leading UFO researchers Chris Aubeck and Jacques Vallée have continued to investigate both new and existing cases with the help of a group of experts on the internet. New cases have been researched and appear in this work for the first time (Penguin produced a paperback version in 2010). Meanwhile other cases have been expanded following further investigation, and some cases from the original work have been removed as additional research proved that they lacked merit.

To hear more about Dr. Vallée's research, just click here and here for two videos; a panel about outer space at a global financial conference in Saudi Arabia and a TED talk in Geneva on Futures Research, respectively

    424 Selected Reports

The book you receive will contain more than 420 selected reports of sightings from biblical-age antiquity through the year 1879 -- the point at which the Industrial Revolution deeply changed the nature of human society with the invention of the dirigible, airplanes, rockets, and various prototypes increasing the opportunity for confusion and misinterpretation of new technology as UFOs.

Report of a man in a flying object by nightwatchmen in London, 1710

The Phenomenon Did Not Begin in 1947

As some of you may not be familiar with the original version of Wonders and its research, the following will serve as additional background on the concept. Since the end of World War II, many individual researchers, newspapers, and military agencies have recorded thousands of incidents involving aerial phenomena, often called UFOs. These accounts gave rise to much speculation about flying saucers, visitors from other planets and alien abductions, generally thought to be a recent development. Yet the phenomenon did not begin in the present era.

Jacques Vallée and Chris Aubeck reveal a thread of vividly rendered -- and sometimes strikingly similar -- reports of mysterious aerial phenomena from antiquity through the modern age. These accounts share definite physical features  -- such as the complex evolution of the objects in flight, their spherical or discoid shape and their luminous characteristics -- that have changed little over the centuries, yet have remained unexplained. This work charts a complete chronology, ensuring that cases meet a standard measure of credibility via a specific person on the record having witnessed an event at a specific time and place.

The work of Jacques and Chris has received widespread praise for its scientific approach to the study of UFOs. A few of these endorsements are provided here.

    "A riveting historical framework"

Sage thinkers have noted that revolutions in thought, scientific or otherwise, are wrought when anomalies are noted and then finally explained. But what does one do when an anomaly continues to show up over thousands of years in the skies above us -- and yet there remains no consistent explanation?! Absent a formal explanation a diligent scientist in today’s era would first chronicle the history, verify the data with best practices, and then provide an objective recounting of the case facts.  That is at least what should happen…

In that vein this newly updated Edition of Wonders in the Sky provides a riveting historical framework for a vexing anomaly—that of unexplained aerial objects and, by implication, the potential reasons (intelligence?) behind them. Starting as far back as 1460 BC, Vallée and Aubeck, in magnificent detail, provide a gallery of unexplained aerial phenomena as chronicled by a range of individuals—whether common folk, generals of the day, members of their armies, scientists and astronomers, or leaders of cities or even religions. What is compellingly brought out in Wonders in the Sky are the similarities of the recorded experiences juxtaposed against the extraordinary variety of interpretations by the participants who recorded them. What have these people seen? Why is it there? Is it similar to what is seen today and if not, why not?

Meticulous attention to scientific detail is a hallmark of Vallée’s books, and Wonders in the Sky is a case study in objectivity. By never allowing their writing, or their reader, to fall into the trap of a foregone conclusion, Vallée and Aubeck enable the broadest set of hypotheses to remain on the table. Such focus is what makes this new edition of Wonders in the Sky a landmark on the history of unexplained aerial objects. And it should be a case study in the scientific literature of how to avoid dogma while still leaving open the wonders of what role we play in a larger reality.

-Dr. Garry Nolan, Rachford and Carlota Harris Professor of Microbiology & Immunology, Stanford University

"A beautiful synthesis of the humanities and sciences"

Anyone who has dipped into the world of ufology knows just how difficult it is to find an able guide through the dark deep forest of the phenomena, which are diverse, confusing, and often, or so it seems, intentionally confusing. Two beacons high above this forest have been the work of Jacques Vallée and the web-based “Magoniax” research team of Chris Aubeck and his colleagues. The present project, a gorgeously produced new edition of Wonders in the Sky, brings the two together again as they scan human history from antiquity to 1879 for evidence of unexplained aerial objects. In the process, they resist any easy answers or pat interpretations, preferring instead to sit with the historical data in all its complexity and mystery, to listen, as it were, to the historian of religions as closely as the astronomer. The result is a beautiful synthesis of the humanities and the sciences, of the human imagination and the computer, of the visual arts and the art of scholarship. From the striking painting on the cover, which depicts a mysterious object painted on an Italian ceiling in 1561, to the sharp, clear thinking of the text, to the playful medieval symbols attached to each case, the book sets a new standard, and a new aesthetic, for the still developing conversation.

-Dr. Jeffrey J. Kripal, J. Newton Rayzor Professor of Religion, Rice University

"That, I believe, is true science: to follow the data wherever they lead"

Their rigorously scientific insistence allows Vallée and Aubeck to retain the most challenging and interesting aspects of these events without the distraction of premature commitment to any particular interpretation. That, I believe, is true science: to follow the data wherever they lead, and to move away from established theory when it fails to deal adequately with the data.

The other beautiful innovation in Vallée and Aubeck’s work is the combination of science and scholarship. A willingness to combine documentary research, the heart of humanities scholarship, with physical and astrophysical knowledge is rare.”-From the preface to Wonders by Professor David Hufford at the University of Pennsylvania*

106 Color Images and Special Items

Our expanded and updated Wonders in the Sky contains 106 color images of rare photographs and illustrations. These images have been rendered from high quality digital images to create a work of lasting beauty as well as science. Towards this end, you will also receive the following special items for your contribution:

A facsimile commemorative token (coin) of French origin from 1648 depicting a legendary shield from the sky

The token pictured above, which was struck in 1648, shows a disk with a thick border. This kind of object or medal (“jeton” in French) has been mentioned in books and magazine articles as a flying shield either observed in the clouds, passing over a wide landscape or (as in this case) protecting it from spears directed at its curved surface from the sky.

The jeton is a little larger than a U.S. quarter and is similar to many tokens produced in Europe around that time for religious and educational purposes. Rather than a flying saucer (some sort of “Roman Roswell,” as some have suggested), it is thought to represent the “Shield of Numa.”

It is said that on March 1st, 707 BC, during the outbreak of a plague, the second king of Rome, Numa Pompilius, witnessed the fall of an oval shield from the sky during a ceremony. Somewhat astonished, he sought advice from the nymph Egeria and the nine Muses, who assured him that Jupiter had dropped it as a sign of his benevolence. The pestilence soon came to an end, so the grateful king had eleven identical copies made by an armourer, and those were used in dances and celebrations every year. Written around the edges of this coin is the Latin phrase “Resistit paucis obruitur pluribus,” which means “It withstands a few but is overwhelmed by the many.”

Reports of such “flying shields” figure prominently in Wonders in the Sky. We believe this intriguing coin is a worthy accessory minted in support of the research.

A folder of rare 17th and 18th century European broadsheets and placards

Presented are a folder of rare broadsheets, the newspapers of the time, that functioned as mass media, most of them from 17th and 18th century Germany, depicting celestial events observed in central Europe, France and Italy. Produced in facsimile, each one consists of an engraving of the scene (typically enhanced with mythological, allegorical or religious figures) with a text explaining the significance of the event for the benefit of the public.

These records have taken the form of paintings on the walls of caves, carvings in stone walls, statues and stelae, or writings on papyrus and parchment. After the invention of paper and the printing press, the observations could be shared with an eager and curious public. This led to widely distributed poster-size documents known as broadsheets, broadsides or placards. These were posted as notices in a public place or sold as individual sheets.

Please see two of the placards below, and enjoy these rare items that are both pieces of art and critical components of the historical UFO record.

    Additional information about the authors

Jacques Vallée and Chris Aubeck at a conference in Madrid, May 2015

Jacques Vallée holds a master’s degree in astrophysics from France and a Ph.D. in computer science from Northwestern University, where he served as an associate of Dr. J. Allen Hynek, the scientific consultant to the U.S. Air Force on the UFO problem. He is the author of several books about high technology and unidentified phenomena, a subject that first attracted his attention as an astronomer in Paris. While analyzing observations from many parts of the world, he became intrigued by the similarities in patterns between modern sightings and historical reports of encounters with flying objects and their occupants in every culture. The result was the seminal book Passport to Magonia, published in 1969. Later, Jacques would become the model for the French scientist character in Stephen Spielberg's Close Encounters played by François Truffaut.

After a career as an information scientist with Stanford Research Institute and the Institute for the Future, where he served as a principal investigator for the groupware project on the Arpanet, the prototype of the Internet, Jacques Vallée cofounded a venture capital firm in Silicon Valley, where he works.

Chris Aubeck was born in London. His interest in the historical and sociological aspects of unexplained aerial phenomena began at an early age. He moved to Spain at age 19 and now lives in Madrid, where he works as an interpreter and English teacher at the Madrid Development Institute. A student of folklore and philology, he has helped compile the largest collection of pre-1947 UFO cases in the world. He has spoken on his research in many articles and on public radio. In 2008 he was awarded a prize for his contributions to the field by the Spanish organization Fundación Anomalía.

In 2003, Aubeck cofounded a remarkable collaborative network of librarians, students, and scholars of paranormal history on the Internet. This group, known as the Magoniax Project, extends from North and Central America to Russia and Germany. It has accumulated thousands of references, searched media archives in several languages, and gathered hundreds of rare documents, scientific reports, and newspaper clippings from the last four hundred years.

    Phoenix Arizona Alien Encounter

    (Before It's News)

    ARTICLE ALIEN KEN PFEIFER 2-13-16
    PHOENIX ARIZONA ALIEN ENCOUNTER
    DECEMBER 2015  ………..  PHOENIX ARIZONA
Lon Strickler reports :  I received an inquiry on Wednesday from an elderly woman in the Phoenix suburb of Surprise, Arizona. She witnessed 2 humanoid beings standing outside her bedroom window a few days before Christmas 2015. The following report includes most of the information from the incident…though there are a few personal notes that I have redacted. I called and talked to the witness Thursday night in an attempt to gather more details.  I am presenting this case to the readers and other investigators as a means of gathering additional data and knowledge about these beings. The witness was extremely alarmed by the incident and she is desperately seeking answers.
Around 12-21-2015, I woke up about 1:30 am. I glanced out my bedroom window, and this is what I saw: Two gray short people like figures with cone heads. The tallest stood there approx., 4 ft tall, and the smallest one about 3 ft stood directly in front of the taller one. They just stood motionless. I looked, then looked again, as I have never seen anything like this EVER! I set on the edge of my bed and I just kept looking at them. They didn’t move. Neither one of them had facial features at all. It appeared to me they had something over their heads to hide their appearance. I didn’t let my dog out, as I didn’t know what could happen. I laid back down in bed, I went to sleep! I didn’t awake until the next morning 8:30 am. 7 HOURS?  I called the police a week or so later. They just told me to go to the ER or to call the Crisis Ctr., then they wrote down the tele# of Crisis Ctr., and they left my home.
    .
About a week later I went to my church, the priest didn’t believe me, or didn’t want to discuss, this alien encounter! I have done a lot of research online, and these Greys, with cone heads have been seen before, and are described as I have described them. I have never believed in UFO’s or Paranormal sightings, or have I ever viewed any web site on my computer until after I encountered these 2 Grey little people looking in to my bedroom window. This was not a dream! I was completely awake! No medicine I take has any side effects, that would cause me to hallucinate! I am a senior citizen, I am living alone. This has scared me. They have not come back! I worry that they might come back. I have so many questions. I also called CH 113 EWTN TV. The person I talked to at EWTN didn’t believe me and did not want to discuss the matter. Please e-mail me. I have not told my friends or family. Please help me with answers I have. I pray daily that I never see them again!  I called the witnessed and received more specific details…though most of it was personal. She did state that these beings wore full-length cloaks that were the same color (grayish-brown) of the cone-like covering over the head and face. The cone was more like a helmet. She also stated that she never sleeps more than 3 hours without waking…but she slept for an uninterrupted 7 hours, which she states she has never done before or since.  There was a NUFORC reported UFO sighting over Surprise, AZ the same night of the encounter:  Duration:10 seconds – A blue oval light shot over the house behind a tree then shot back the same way it came from behind a tree line it happened so fast.
After receiving the additional details, I came up with one possibility…though I would appreciate other theories.  In some respects, these beings remind me of the descriptions for the ‘Teros’ species…a supposed Earth underground dwelling race of humanoids with cone-shaped heads. They do have human-like facial features, so this may have been a face covering of some type. They are also referred to as ‘Sunaynans’…’The Yearly Ones,’ an ancient race that appears at a certain time of the year. Some of the early native people of North America made reference to them…mostly in the desert Southwest.
So this sighting does kind of parallel the legends since this occurred in Arizona.  Once again, any information that can be provided to me would be appreciated.

Strange Lights In The Sky Over The Netherlands (Video)

    (Before It's News)

Witness recorded with his phone strange lights in the sky in the South of the Netherlands on February 2, 2016.

Witness states: I filmed this with my phone from inside the car. Can anyone explain to me what I was just looking at?

The Dutch news websites immediately explain it as being “polar stratospheric clouds” but I did not see any other different colors that are specific with polar stratospheric clouds.

Polar stratospheric clouds also known as nacreous clouds are colorful clouds in the winter polar stratosphere at altitudes of 15,000–25,000 meters (49,000–82,000 ft).

The cloud formation with the three lights/objects is quite different if you compare it with a specific polar stratospheric cloud.

Gravitational Waves: What Their Discovery Means for Science and Humanity

People around the world cheered yesterday morning (Feb. 11) when scientists announced the first direct detection of gravitational waves — ripples in the fabric of space-time whose existence was first proposed by Albert Einstein, in 1916.

The waves came from two black holes circling each other, closer and closer, until they finally collided. The recently upgraded Large Interferometer Gravitational Wave Observatory (LIGO) captured the signal on Sept. 14, 2015. Not every scientific discovery gets this kind of reception, so what exactly is all the hype about, and what's next for LIGO now that it has spotted these elusive waves?

First of all, detecting two colliding black holes is thrilling by itself — no one knew for sure if black holes actually merged together to create even more-massive black holes, but now there's physical proof. And there's the joy of finally having direct evidence for a phenomenon that was first predicted 100 years ago, using an instrument that was proposed 40 years ago. [Gravitational Waves Detected by LIGO: Complete Coverage]

But what is truly monumental about this detection is that it gives humanity the ability to see the universe in a totally new way, scientists said. The ability to directly detect gravitational waves — which are generated by the acceleration or deceleration of massive objects in space — has been compared to a deaf person suddenly gaining the ability to hear sound. An entirely new realm of information is now available.

"It's like Galileo pointing the telescope for the first time at the sky," LIGO team member Vassiliki (Vicky) Kalogera, a professor of physics and astronomy at Northwestern University in Illinois, told Space.com. "You're opening your eyes — in this case, our ears — to a new set of signals from the universe that our previous technologies did not allow us to receive, study and learn from."

"Up until now, we've been deaf to gravitational waves," LIGO Executive Director David Reitze, of the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), said during an announcement ceremony in Washington, D.C. "What's going to come now is we're going to hear more things, and no doubt we'll hear things that we expected to hear … but we will also hear things that we never expected."

With this new sensory view of the universe, here are some of the things scientists hope to discover.

LIGO is particularly sensitive to gravitational waves that come from violent cosmic events, such as two massive objects colliding or a star exploding. The observatory has the potential to locate these objects or events before light-based telescopes can do so, and in some cases, gravitational-wave observations could be the only way to find and study such events.

For example, in yesterday's announcement, scientists reported that LIGO had identified two black holes spinning around each other and merging together in a final, energetic collision. As their name suggests, black holes don't radiate light, which means they are invisible to telescopes that collect and study electromagnetic radiation. Some black holes are visible with light-based telescopes, because material in their immediate vicinity radiates, but scientists haven't seen examples of merging black holes with radiating material around them.

In addition, the black holes spotted by LIGO are 29 and 36 times the mass of the sun, respectively. But Reitze said that as LIGO's sensitivity continues to improve, the instrument could be sensitive to black holes that are 100, 200 or even 500 times the mass of the sun that are further away from Earth. "There could be a really nice discovery space that opens up once we get out there," he said.

Scientists already know that studying the sky in different wavelengths of light can reveal new data about the cosmos. For many centuries, astronomers could only work with optical light. But relatively recently, researchers built instruments allowing them to study the universe using X-rays, radio waves, ultraviolet waves and gamma-rays. Each time, scientists got a new view of the universe.

In the same way, gravitational waves have the potential to show scientists totally new features of cosmic objects, LIGO team members said. [Study of Gravitational Waves Could Unravel Many Mysteries (Video)]

"If we're ever lucky enough to have a supernova in our own galaxy, or maybe in a nearby galaxy, we will be able to look at the actual dynamics of what goes on inside the supernova," said LIGO co-founder Rainer Weiss of MIT, who spoke at the announcement ceremony. While light is often blocked by dust and gas, "gravitational waves come right out [of the supernova], boldly unimpeded," Weiss said. "As a consequence, you really find out what's going on inside of these things."

Other exotic objects scientists hope to study with gravitational waves are neutron stars, which are mind-bogglingly dense, burned-out stellar corpses: A teaspoon of neutron-star material would weigh about a billion tons on Earth. Scientists aren't sure what happens to regular matter under such extreme conditions, but gravitational waves could provide extremely helpful clues, because these waves should carry information about the interior of the neutron star all the way to Earth, LIGO scientists said.

LIGO also has a system set up to alert light-based telescopes when the detector seems to have spotted a gravitational wave. Some of the astronomical events that LIGO will study, such as colliding neutron stars, may produce light in all wavelengths, from gamma-rays to radio waves. With LIGO's alert system in place, it's possible that scientists could observe some astronomical events or objects in various wavelengths of light, plus gravitational waves, which would provide a "very complete picture" of those events, Reitze said.

"When that happens, that'll be, I think, the next big thing in this field," he said.

Gravitational waves were first predicted by Einstein's theory of general relativity, which was published in 1916. That famous theory has stood up to all kinds of physical tests, but there are some aspects that scientists haven't been able to study in the real world, because they require very extreme circumstances. The extreme warping of space-time is one example of this.

"Until now, we have only seen warped space-time when it is very calm — as though we had only seen the surface of the ocean on a very calm day, when it's quite glassy," Kip Thorne of Caltech, another founding member of LIGO and an expert on warped space-time, said at yesterday's ceremony. "We had never seen the ocean roiled in a storm, with crashing waves. All that changed on Sept. 14. The colliding black holes that produced these gravitational waves created a violent storm in the fabric of space and time." [The History & Structure of the Universe (Infographic)]

"This observation tests that regime beautifully, very strongly," Thorne continued. "And Einstein comes out with beaming success."

But the study of general relativity via gravitational waves is far from over. Questions remain about the nature of the graviton, the particle believed to carry the gravitational force (just like the photon is the particle that carries the electromagnetic force). And scientists have many questions about the inner workings of black holes, which gravitational waves may help illuminate (so to speak). But all of that, the scientists said, will be revealed slowly, over the course of many years, as LIGO and related instruments collect more data on more events.

Using laser beams, scientists have detected the physical distortions caused by passing gravitational waves. <a href=
Using laser beams, scientists have detected the physical distortions caused by passing gravitational waves.See how the LIGO observatory hunts gravitational waves in this Space.com infographic.

Looking toward the next three years, Reitze said the collaboration is focused on increasing LIGO's sensitivity to its full potential. This will make the observatory — which consists of two big detectors, one in Louisiana and the other in Washington state — more sensitive to gravitational waves. But scientists don't know how many events LIGO will see, because they don't know how often many of these events occur in the universe.

LIGO detected the binary black hole merger even before the instrument began its first official observation campaign after its recent upgrade, but it's possible that this was a lucky break. To get the gravitational astronomy train rolling, LIGO simply needs more data.

When asked to comment on LIGO's impact on the world beyond the scientific community, and about how gravitational-wave science might influence people's daily lives, Reitze simply said, "Who knows?"

"When Einstein predicted general relativity, who would have predicted that we'd use it every day when we use our cellphones?" he said. (General relativity provides an understanding how gravity influences the passing of time, and this information is necessary for GPS technology, which uses satellites that orbit further away from the gravitational pull of the Earth than people on the surface).

LIGO is "the most sensitive instrument ever built," said Reitze, and the technological advances that have been made while building the observatory may feed into technologies that will be used in ways people can't yet predict.

Thorne said he sees the larger contribution of LIGO slightly differently.

"When we look back on the era of the Renaissance, and we ask ourselves, 'What did the humans of that era give to us that's important to us today?' I think we would all agree it's great art, great architecture, great music," he said.

"Similarly, when our descendants look back on this era, and they ask themselves, 'What great things came to us?' … I believe there will be an understanding of the fundamental laws of the universe and an understanding of what those laws do in the universe, and an exploration of the universe," Thorne added. "LIGO is a big part of that. The rest of astronomy is a big part of that. And I think that cultural gift to our future generations is really much bigger than any kind of technological spin-off, than the ultimate development of technology of any kind. I think we should be proud of what we give to our descendants culturally."

Bright UFO Discards Another Glowing Object To Ground Level

    spokane-ufo

A man in Spokane Valley in Washington claimed to have witnessed and recorded a glowing sphere on video. The object apparently stopped to hover and seemed to drop something. On January 26, 2014, the witness noticed a bright object in yellow, red, and orange colors from the outside into a back porch around 7 p.m.

He went north of his house and stopped before he changed direction to the east. He alerted his family for them to witness the strange aerial event.

The witness saw the object hovered, flashed brightly many times, and discarded something glowing from the bottom of it. The object then slowly lost its brightness.

Interestingly, it wasn’t the first time he saw the object. He saw the same object doing the same thing in almost the same place, only slightly farther southeast.

A second witness made a report to UFOSNW of a large glowing orange sphere to the east at approximately 1810 hours on the same date. The witness lived around a mile from the first witness who took a video footage.

MUFON investigator James E. Clarkson closed the case as an unknown aerial vehicle (AUV). He considered the case as strange with technical evidence and strong witness credibility.

Mobile Stargazing: The Universe at Your Fingertips
In the past you would point at an object in the sky and ask "What star is that?" Today you can pull your phone from your pocket and find out.

Being out under the stars on a clear night can be "food for the soul," and it's been known to trigger a lifelong passion for astronomy in more than one impressionable youngster - myself included! But it can also leave you wondering what you're looking at. Is that bright object a star, or a planet, or even a satellite? Where does one constellation end, and the next one begin? And where can I find that comet that everyone’s been talking about? Is it even visible from where I live?

It's not always convenient to consult an astronomy book, or magazine star chart, in the dark, and not everyone has access to these aids. But nearly everyone has a mobile device these days, and there are plenty of apps available for sky watchers of all ages and knowledge levels. In this series of columns, we'll explore astronomy the 21st century way – with astronomy and space-related apps and gadgets.

Here, we'll explain how to navigate the sky and learn some prominent stars and constellations. We'll learn why different stars are visible at different times of the year. We'll cover how the planets move along the ecliptic (the plane of the solar system), and where to find it. We'll study the moon's motion across the sky, and why it occasionally eclipses a star – or the sun! We'll start off by helping you configure the app so you're ready for the next clear night. [Smart Space Apps to Explore the Universe]

For telescope owners, astronomy apps can offer advice on what to observe, and what’s likely to be visible with your equipment, large or small. Many naked eye stars are actually double or multiple systems, often comprised of stars of different colors - and these can be enjoyed in a backyard telescope. Most of these multiple stars were named before the invention of the telescope, so they only bear a single name. Other stars vary in brightness on a repeating schedule that you can track yourself by observing how they vary compared to their neighbors in the eyepiece field of view. Advanced astronomy apps provide background information of the story behind the names, and the interesting science around the stars’ behavior.

Apps have opened up the universe to anyone with a mobile device, anywhere at anytime.

If you're a planet enthusiast, an astronomy app can tell you where the four Galilean moons of Jupiter are, and whether they are eclipsing one another, or casting their little round black shadows on the great planet's face. Jupiter rotates once every 10 hours or so, so your app is a great aid to determine when to look for the Great Red Spot. We'll explain how to configure and use the app to do all of these tasks.

Deep sky objects, nebulas, star clusters, and galaxies populate the night sky year round. While most galaxies are beyond the reach of backyard telescopes, several are easy to see with unaided eyes, if you know where to look. The Great Andromeda Galaxy, also known as Messier 31, is six full moon diameters across, and the light you're seeing now left there 2.5 million years ago! Messier 31 is one of a list of 110 famous deep sky objects first listed by French astronomer Charles Messier in 1771, many of which can be spotted without a telescope. We'll cover how to generate lists of these objects for your location and observing date, and use your app to find them.

Not all apps are created equal. While we won't play favorites, we will identify the simple ones for beginners, and highlight the ones with advanced features that budding astronomers and even teachers can use, indoors or out, to fully learn the science. When new apps are released or old favorites updated, we'll review them and highlight what's new.

From time to time, we'll explain the purpose for many of the features, like the red screen mode for night vision, the meridian and ecliptic reference lines, and the various coordinate grids that can be switched on. Some of the apps allow you to explore the universe by flying from place to place and seeing the sky from another star. Or view our solar system as seen from another planet.

Some of the apps even allow you to connect to a computerized telescope and drive it around the sky. We'll cover that, too.

This Mobile Stargazing column will go beyond stargazing. We'll look at the apps for various space telescope and planetary exploration missions, including apps that tell you how to see the International Space Station, or watch spacewalks on your phone. There are even apps to alert you when to head outside and look for auroras, also known as northern lights. We'll also see how stargazers use mobile devices as astronomy aids, from taking smartphone astrophotographs, to leveling your telescope tripod, to catching that perfectly composed photograph by predicting where the moon or other objects will be on a given day and time.

In the next column, we'll highlight how mobile devices and apps represent a fundamental shift, allowing us to make a connection with the sky that we just couldn't before. We'll highlight common features found on most astronomy apps and how to set them up for best results. I'm also interested to hear what you want to know about, so please send questions and ideas for topics to cover in future columns. Until then, keep your eyes on the skies!
