Scientists: Geological evidence shows the Great Sphinx is 800,000 years old

One of the most mysterious and enigmatic monuments on the surface of the planet is without a doubt the Great Sphinx at the Giza plateau in Egypt. It is an ancient construction that has baffled researchers ever since its discovery and until today, no one has been able to accurately date the Sphinx, since there are no written records or mentions in the past about it.

Now, two Ukrainian researchers have proposed a new provocative theory where the two scientists propose that the Great Sphinx of Egypt is around 800,000 years old. A Revolutionary theory that is backed up by science.

The study was presented at the International Conference of Geoarchaeology and Archaeomineralogy held in Sofia titled: GEOLOGICAL ASPECT OF THE PROBLEM OF DATING THE GREAT EGYPTIAN SPHINX CONSTRUCTION.

The authors of this paper are scientists Manichev Vjacheslav I. (Institute of Environmental Geochemistry of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine) and Alexander G. Parkhomenko (Institute of Geography of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine).

The starting point of these two experts is the paradigm shift initiated by West and Schoch, a ‘debate’ intended to overcome the orthodox view of Egyptology referring to the possible remote origins of the Egyptian civilization and, on the other, physical evidence of water erosion present at the monuments of the Giza Plateau.

According to Manichev and Parkhomenko:

“The problem of dating the Great Egyptian Sphinx construction is still valid, despite of the long-term history of its research. Geological approach in connection to other scientific-natural methods permits to answer the question about the relative age of the Sphinx. The conducted visual investigation of the Sphinx allowed the conclusion about the important role of water from large water bodies which partially flooded the monument with formation of wave-cut hollows on its vertical walls.”

“The morphology of these formations has an analogy with similar such hollows formed by the sea in the coastal zones. Genetic resemblance of the compared erosion forms and the geological structure and petrographic composition of sedimentary rock complexes lead to a conclusion that the decisive factor of destruction of the historic monument is the wave energy rather than sand abrasion in Eolian process. Voluminous geological literature confirms the fact of existence of long-living fresh-water lakes in various periods of the Quaternary from the Lower Pleistocene to the Holocene. These lakes were distributed in the territories adjacent to the Nile. The absolute mark of the upper large erosion hollow of the Sphinx corresponds to the level of water surface which took place in the Early Pleistocene. The Great Egyptian Sphinx had already stood on the Giza Plateau by that geological (historical) time.”

A strong argument was made by Ukrainian scientists in regards of the Sphinx, arguments based upon geological studies which support Schoch’s view regarding the Sphinx and its age. Manichev and Parkhomenko focus on the deteriorated aspect of the body of the Sphinx, leaving aside the erosive features where the Sphinx is located, which had been studied previously by Schoch. Ukrainian scholars focused on the undulating terrain of the Sphinx which displays the mysterious pattern.

Mainstream scientists offer explanations for this sharp feature and state that it is based on the abrasive effect of the wind and sand, the undulations were formed because the harder layers of rock are better at withstanding the erosions while the softer layers would have been more affected, forming voids.

However, as noted Manichev and Parkhomenko, this argument does not explain why the front of the head of the Sphinx lacks such features. In regards to the argument made by Schoch about the heavy rain period which occurred around 13,000 BC, the Ukrainian scientists recognized Schoch hypothesis partially suggesting that the erosive features of the Sphinx go further back than 13.000 BC. Manichev and Parkhomenko argue is that the mountainous and coastal areas of the Caucasus and Crimea, which they know well, have a type of wind erosion that differs morphologically to the erosive features noted on the Sphinx. “In our geological field expeditions in different mountains and littoral zones of the Crimea and Caucasus we could often observe the forms of Eolian weathering which morphology differs considerably from the weathering taking place on the GES. Most natural forms of weathering are of smoothed character, independent of lithological composition of the rocks.”

They continue further and explain:

“Our personal experience in scientific investigation of geology of the sea coasts gives reasons to draw an analogy with the GES and to suggest another mechanism of its destruction. Specialists-geologists, who work in the field of sea-coast geomorphology, know such forms of relief as wave-cut hollows (Morskaya Geomorfologiya, 1980). They can be one- and multi-storey. They are arranged horizontally to the sea water surface, if the coast makes a vertical wall (cliff). Especially deep wave-cut hollows are formed in precipitous cliffs built by the strata of carbonaceous rocks. Such forms of the coast relief are well-known and studied in detail on the Black-Sea coast of the Caucasus and Crimea (Popov, 1953; Zenkovich, 1960). General model of formation of the wave-cut hollows in the rocks of the Caucasian flysch is given by Popov (1953, 162; Fig. 3). In dynamics of the process of wave-cut hollows formation one can notice such a characteristic feature that the wave energy is directed to the rock stratum at the level of water surface. Besides, both saline and fresh water can dissolve the rocks.”

Manichev and Parkhomenko propose a new natural mechanism that may explain the undulations and mysterious features of the Sphinx. This mechanism is the impact of waves on the rocks of the coast. Basically, this could produce, in a period of thousands of years the formation of one or more layers of ripples, a fact that is clearly visible, for example, on the shores of the Black Sea. This process, which acts horizontally (that is, when the waves hit the rock up to the surface), will produce a wear or dissolution of the rock.

The fact is that the observation of these cavities in the Great Sphinx made the Ukranian scientists think that this great monument could have been affected by above said process in the context of immersion in large bodies of water, not the regular flooding of the Nile.

Manichev and Parkhomenko suggest that the geological composition of the body of the Sphinx is a sequence of layers composed of limestone with small interlayers of clays. Manichev and Parkhomenko explain that these rocks possess different degree of resistance to the water effect and say that if the hollows formation were due to sand abrasion only, the hollows had to correspond to the strata of a certain lithological composition. They suggest that the Great Sphinx hollows are formed in fact within several strata, or occupy some part of the stratum of homogeneous composition.7

The Back of the Great Sphinx of Egypt

Manichev and Parkhomenko firmly believe that the Sphinx had to be submerged for a long time under water and, to support this hypothesis, they point towards existing literature of geological studies of the Giza Plateau. According to these studies at the end of the Pliocene geologic period (between 5.2 and 1.6 million years ago), sea water entered the Nile valley and gradually creating flooding in the area. This led to formation of lacustrine deposits which are at the mark of 180 m above the present level of the Mediterranean Sea.

According to Manichev and Parkhomenko, it is the sea level during the Calabrian phase which is the closest to the present mark with the highest GES hollow at its level. High level of sea water also caused the Nile overflowing and created long-living water-bodies. As to time it corresponds to 800000 years.

What we have here is evidence which contradicts the conventional theory of deterioration caused by Sand and Water, a theory already criticized by West and Schoch, who recalled that during many centuries, the body of the Sphinx was buried by the sands of the desert, so Wind and Sand erosion would not have done any damage to the enigmatic Sphinx.

However, where Schoch clearly saw the action of streams of water caused by continuous rains, Ukrainian geologists see the effect of erosion caused by the direct contact of the waters of the lakes formed in the Pleistocene on the body Sphinx. This means that the Great Sphinx of Egypt is one of the oldest monuments on the surface of the Earth, pushing back drastically the origin of mankind and civilization.

Some might say that the theory proposed by Manichev and Parkhomenko is very extreme because it places the Great Sphinx in an era where there were no humans, according to currently accepted evolutionary patterns. Furthermore, as it has been demonstrated, the two megalithic temples, located adjacent to the Great Sphinx were built by the same stone which means that the new dating of the Sphinx drags these monuments with the Sphinx back 800,000 years. In other words, this means that ancient civilizations inhabited our planet much longer than mainstream scientists are willing to accept.

Giant Mystery Ring of Galaxies Should Not Exist

Astronomers are constantly uncovering the “most distant,” “most massive” or “most energetic” objects in our universe, but today, researchers have announced the discovery of a truly monstrous structure consisting of a ring of galaxies around 5 billion light-years across.

The galactic ring, which was revealed by 9 gamma-ray bursts (GRBs), is located 7 billion light-years away and spans an area of the sky more than 70 times the diameter of a full moon.

GRBs are thought to be detonated when a massive star reaches the end of its life. As the star implodes after running out of fuel, a black hole is formed and vast quantities of energy are blasted in collimated beams. Should Earth be aligned with these beams, an incredibly luminous signal can be observed and these beacons can be used to precisely gauge the distance to the GRB and the location of the galaxy that hosts it.

The GRBs are all cataloged in the Gamma Ray Burst Online Index, which precisely records each GRB distance and location, like pins on a cosmic map.

Astronomers believe these GRBs (and therefore the galaxies they inhabit) are somehow associated as all 9 are located at a similar distance from Earth. According to its discoverers, there’s a 1 in 20,000 probability of the GRBs being in this distribution by chance — in other words, they are very likely associated with the same structure, a structure that, according to cosmological models,should not exist.

“If the ring represents a real spatial structure, then it has to be seen nearly face-on because of the small variations of GRB distances around the object’s center,” said Lajos Balazs, of Konkoly Observatory in Budapest, Hungary, and lead author of a paper published in the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society. “The ring could though instead be a projection of a sphere, where the GRBs all occurred within a 250 million year period, a short timescale compared with the age of the universe.”

But what could possibly be creating a sphere an unprescedented 5 billion light-years across?

According to most cosmological models, the universe should have a roughly uniform distribution of matter over the largest scales. This is known as the “Cosmological Principle” and observations by NASA’s Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) and Europe’s Planck space telescope, which both studied the distribution of the universe’s ancient cosmic microwave background (CMB) radiation, seem to agree. However, other results have recently challenged this idea hinting that structures as large as 1.2 billion light-years may exist. But a growing list of discoveries in the cosmic abyss seem to contradict even the 1.2 billion light-year “limit.”

The GRB ring is 5 times larger than the 1.2 billion light-year limit; a pretty huge anomaly by anyone’s standard. And this latest discovery isn’t even the biggest. In 2013, another distribution of GRBs revealed a 10 billion light-year structure. Other large structures also defy this theoretical limit.

So what could be causing this particular ring of GRBs? One idea focuses around the large-scale structure of the universe where clusters of galaxies amass together in a web-like structure, thought to be clumped around concentrations of dark matter. The “holes” in this web are referred to as voids — regions of the cosmos that are conspicuously near-empty of any matter. The largest voids are called, unsurprisingly, “super-voids.”

But this new structure dwarfs all known super-voids.

“If we are right, this structure contradicts the current models of the universe. It was a huge surprise to find something this big — and we still don’t quite understand how it came to exist at all,” added Balazs.

So is the Cosmological Principle flawed? It’s certainly looking that way.

The Many, Many Times Astronomers Mistook Mundane Phenomena for Aliens

The science world is all in a tizzy this week about the supposed discovery of an alien megastructure. It's an intriguing theory, no doubt, but one deserving hefty amounts of skepticism. As we've learned before, inexplicable observations are all too often confused for aliens. Here are some classic examples.

A strange star located about 1,500 light-years from here is confounding astronomers. As reported by Ross Andersen in The Atlantic, the star, dubbed KIC 8462852, appears to be surrounded by "a strange mess of objects," compelling scientists involved in the hunt for extraterrestrial intelligence "to get a closer look."

A likely explanation for the anomaly is a massive and irregular cloud of debris left over from a celestial collision. But Jason Wright, an astronomer who studies exoplanets and astrobiology, suspects it may be a Dyson Sphere-an alien-built megastructure consisting of solar panels placed in orbit around a star.

There's much more to this story than my summary, so I highly recommend Phil Plait's post at Slate. As Plait himself admits, this star's behavior is indeed difficult to explain and it's "clear something weird is happening there." To be clear, it's probably not ET, but the suggestion that aliens may somehow be involved is not completely outrageous. As I've said before, the search for alien artifacts-or what's called Dysonian SETI-may be our best route to finally detecting signs of an extraterrestrial civilization.

This issue brings to mind previous instances in scientific history when a "God is in the gaps" explanation gets invoked for inexplicable phenomenon. There seems to be a tendency-and again, not a completely unwarranted tendency-among some astronomers to attribute extraterrestrial intervention when they observe something unexpected or seemingly outside the bounds of established knowledge. But in virtually every instance, these initial deliberations have been superseded by more reasonable explanations, as these following examples attest.

Canals on Mars

Back at the turn of the 20th century, American astronomer Percival Lowell posited the theory that an advanced alien civilization had irrigated crops on the surface of Mars with water drawn from the Red Planet's poles via an elaborate canal network.

"That Mars is inhabited by beings of some sort or other we may consider as certain as it is uncertain what these beings may be," wrote Lowell in 1906.

Since the time of Lowell, however, closer inspection of the surface has shown that Mars does indeed feature a complex and dynamic surface, one carved by the ravages of time rather than an alien civilization.

Pulsars

Another example is the discovery of pulsars, those freakishly precise flashes of electromagnetic radiation produced by highly magnetized, rotating neutron stars.

Because they flash at such steady and rapid intervals, some astronomers speculated that pulsars are actually beacons set up by advanced alien intelligences. When they were first described in 1967, one of the scientists involved in the discovery, Jocelyn Bell Burnell, said that :

we did not really believe that we had picked up signals from another civilization, but obviously the idea had crossed our minds and we had no proof that it was an entirely natural radio emission. It is an interesting problem-if one thinks one may have detected life elsewhere in the universe, how does one announce the results responsibly?

Despite their initial skepticism, they named the pulsar LGM-1, which stands for "little green men."

The Wow! Signal

There's also the infamous Wow! signal- a 72-second-long radio burst that initially appeared to good to be true. It was.

[Jerry] Ehman, a volunteer researcher for Ohio State University's now-defunct Big Ear radio observatory, perused data from the telescope's scan of the skies on August 15, a few days earlier. In those days, such information was run through an IBM 1130 mainframe computer and printed on perforated paper, and then laboriously examined by hand. But the tedium was shattered when Ehman spotted something surprising-a vertical column with the alphanumerical sequence "6EQUJ5," which had occurred at 10:16 p.m. EST. He grabbed a red pen and circled the sequence. In the margin, wrote "Wow!"

Ehman's excitement over that bit of arcane information stemmed from the Big Ear's mission at the time, which was searching space for radio signals of the sort that might be emanated by extraterrestrial civilizations, if they were attempting to make contact with intelligent life elsewhere in the universe. To Ehman, this signal, which had come from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius, looked an awful lot like it could be such a message. Observatory director John Krauss and his assistant Bob Dixon, who subsequently examined the data, were similarly astonished by it.

The signal, which lasted 72 seconds, was never detected again, even during follow-up studies. Though never fully explained, the signal was likely a natural, continuous signal, or some human-caused artifact.

Perytons

More recently, astronomers at the Parkes Observatory in Australia detected mysterious radio signals known as perytons.

These brief but intense bursts, which appeared to emanate from deep space, were so strange that some scientists thought they might be coming from, what else, aliens. But a follow-up study ruined the party by showing that the signals were coming from-get this-microwave ovens used in the observatory to re-heat coffee. Ouch.

UFOs

Of course, supposed signs of aliens need not be limited to space.

Unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, are often associated with alien visitations, though empirical evidence for such claims are completely lacking. In virtually all cases, however, there are perfectly reasonable explanations for these observations.

Keep an Open Mind

The strange behavior of KIC 8462852 may never be explained. Our inability to posit a more reasonable explanation may be due to our limited technologies, insufficient science, or lack of imagination.

In time we may discover what's really going on, and it'll probably be a really fascinating explanation. Until then however, we should seek out the simplest solution, while keeping an open mind to other, more radical possibilities. Failure to do both would be a terrible disservice to the scientific process.

BOOK REVIEW: Bloodline of the Gods by Nick Redfern (New Page Books) 2015

With fellow Red Dirt Report writer Sarah Hussain behind the wheel, as we headed to an assignment in faraway Alva, Oklahoma, I sat in the passenger seat plowing through Nick Redfern’s newest book, Bloodline of the Gods, and subtitled “Unravel the Mystery of the Human Blood Type to Reveal the Aliens Among Us.”

Redfern, a prolific writer who refuses to shy away from any controversial issue or paranormal enigma, kept me absolutely captivated, page after page, as the autumnal Oklahoma countryside rolled by. By the time we got back to Oklahoma City, later in the afternoon, I had completed the book, my mind racing. What if this is true?

And Redfern warns readers that the information on those pages is “controversial in the extreme” and that his story “requires us to accept the possibility that the history of the human race is woefully incomplete, incorrect, and lacking in key, critical data.” Anyone who has watched the History Channel’s Ancient Aliens program will know where I’m going with this.

Is humanity, as Redfern suggests, part of a planet-wide lab experiment where at least 10 percent of us are actual descendants of an ancient and advanced alien civilization – the Anunnaki – due to having Rh negative blood. What that means is that while most of us are Rh positive (where our blood cells contain a specific antigen). In fact, Redfern tells us that in the U.S., approximately 85 percent of Caucasians, 90 percent of African-Americans and approximately 98 percent of Asian-Americans are Rh positive.

But that minority of Rh negatives, which includes many well-known world leaders, past and present, are not like us. They are different. Just as the Basque people of northern Spain are different. They are different in many ways, and the bloodlines matter, Redfern tells us in his easy-to-read manner.

Redfern, an Englishman based in Texas, takes us on a wild, historical journey. From many thousands of years ago, when Cro-Magnon man and the Neanderthals were trying to survive (something – or someone – killed off the Neanderthals), a race of aliens, living on the planet Nibiru (which is in our solar system, but on an unusual orbit), came here over 400,000 years ago seeking gold to be used to repair the thinning ozone layer on their own planet.

We learn about Enki and Enlil, the Anunnaki sons of Anu, who are in charge of the gold mining operations, largely in Africa, and eventually lead to the creation of what became human beings, although not without significant controversy amongst Anunnaki leaders.

Sound too bizarre to be true? Yes, I know. I thought the same thing when I was first introduced to these ideas via the works of Zecharia Sitchin and guests on late night Coast to Coast AM. And later, in my previous book reviews – Our Occulted History by Jim Marrs and Slave Species of the Gods and African Temples of the Anunnaki, both by Michael Tellinger – I began to realize that these ideas hold water and are very likely valid. What of the “Great Deluge”? What of the ancient mining operation sites that can’t be explained in South Africa?

And then there’s us. Did Anunnaki biological engineers tinker with the all-ready existing Homo erectus to ultimately create a slave species to mine the gold?

From here, Redfern’s book takes us through the ancient stories of the distant past, like The Epic of Gilgamesh. How the Biblical tale of Noah may actually be about Utnapishtim, who was warned of the impending doom as Nibiru passed Earth’s orbit – creating a planetary cataclysm – and made an “ark” to save genetic material of Earth creatures so that when the catastrophe ended, life could begin anew.

Was this when the Anunnaki split for Nibiru, leaving a few “watchers” behind? And are they behind the flying saucer and alien abduction phenomenon that began in the early 1960’s with Betty and Barney Hill and has continued to the present day? Are the “Grays” (likely biological robots – drones), like the ones written about in Whitley Strieber’s chilling 1987 book Communion, doing the dirty work of abducting humans with Rh negative blood, in hopes of keeping remnants of their race going forward?

These Rh negative people are known to be psychic and very intelligent, with slightly larger brains – like Cro-Magnons – and includes note only President John F. Kennedy but his alleged assassin Lee Harvey Oswald and Oswald’s Russian wife Marina. Other “negatives” include Presidents Dwight D. Eisenhower, Richard Nixon, George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton. And we can’t foget members of the British Royal family. One can agree that there is something different about these people. Some argue there is even a “reptilian” angle to this phenomena, as popularized by UK researcher David Icke.

And the U.S. military, Redfern writes, appears to be monitoring Rh negative people. Those with that blood characteristic have told of strange people and black helicopters seemingly monitoring their every move. UFOs seem to show up when they're least expected. It can be unsettling and even terrifying, although some victims and researchers see these encounters in a positive light.

So, one has to ask: Where is this all going? Will Rh negatives be outed? Will they be vilified as being different and somehow dangerous? And are we heading towards some soulless, transhumanist future as Oz-like aliens work behind the proverbial curtain?

Once again, Nick Redfern pushes the envelope on what our actual history may involve and that what we have been taught to believe is just a cover story. After all, isn't reality usually stranger than fiction?

Boeing creëert "lichtste metaal ooit" - HLN.be

Vliegtuigbouwer Boeing heeft een nieuw metaal ontwikkeld waarvan de structuur naar eigen zeggen voor 99,99 procent uit lucht bestaat. Het metaal, dat door Boeing "Microlattice" werd gedoopt, ziet eruit als een spons is tegelijkertijd sterk én flexibel.

Microlattice is volgens Boeing voor 99,99 procent hol. Het revolutionaire product is 100 keer lichter dan piepschuim en zou wel eens het materiaal van de toekomst voor de luchtvaart zijn.

Het materiaal werd ontwikkeld door HRL Laboratories, een joint venture van Boeing en General Motors, in samenwerking met twee Amerikaanse universiteiten. De wetenschappers inspireerden het metaal op de samenstelling van menselijke botten, waarbij de buitenste rand ook hard en vast is, maar het merg binnenin een holle, lichte en tegelijkertijd bijzonder sterke structuur vormt. Microlattice bestaat uit allemaal holle buisjes die met elkaar verbonden werden. De wand van elk buisje is 1000 keer dunner dan een haar.

In een video bewijst Boeing hoe licht Microlattice precies is: het stukje metaal wordt moeiteloos omhoog gehouden door een paardenbloem en zweeft als een veer door de lucht. Terwijl het materiaal erg licht is, zorgt de bijzondere structuur ervoor dat het bij elkaar gedrukt kan worden en vervolgens weer zijn oorspronkelijke vorm aannemen.

"Eén van de voornaamste toepassingen waar we op dit ogenblik naar kijken," zegt onderzoekster Sophia Yang die samen met Boeing aan het project werkte, "zijn de structurele componenten in de luchtvaart. De sterkte en de lichtheid van het materiaal zullen ervoor zorgen dat het brandstofverbruik van het vliegtuig veel zuiniger zal zijn door de besparing van zoveel gewicht."

Het materiaal is te licht voor de bouw van een volledig vliegtuig, maar het kan als vervanging dienen voor sommige zwaardere metalen onderdelen, zoals vloeren, stoelframes, of muren.

Missouri - 09-26-15 - I was flying on SWA flight 3357 on Sept 26, 2015 and had just taken off out of St. Louis to Florida. About 15-20 minutes into our flight I noticed what I thought was another plane and all of the sudden whatever it was did a 180 without losing altitude or speed. I can only see two contrails but no object. I was shocked as I'm a flight attendant and have never witnessed anything like this before and my husband also saw it and he flies every week for the last 25 years and has never seen anything like it. I have shown many others, commercial pilots included, and they also have no idea what it could have been. The stills I have included are stills that I took from pausing the video.

NASA’s revolutionary ‘propulsion system’ can get Astronauts to Mars in 39 days

According to reports, a company from Texas has been selected by NASA to develop a revolutionary engine that could send mankind to Mars in less than 40 days. Ad Astra's Vasimr engine is apparently capable of getting a spacecraft to Mars in 39 days. This project is just one of the twelve projects currently funded by NASA. Among the revolutionary propulsion system, there are other technologies currently in development, among them are improved habits for humans and smaller satellites that could explore space more efficiently.

Vasimr is short for Variable Specific Impulse Magnetoplasma Rocket.

Remember, there is a long way to go here since Ad Astra’s Vasimr engine is just one part of the entire spacecraft that could eventually take astronauts to Mars. Scientists still need to figure out the type of spacecraft astronauts would travel in.

The revolutionary engine uses plasma as a propellant and is developed by Texas based company Ad Astra. The engine hit the headlines a couple of years ago when sources revealed that this revolutionary engine could reduce the trip to Mars from months to weeks. The only downside if there is one is that the engine requires a Nuclear power source.

In 2013, the company completed the testing of the first prototype.

‘We are thrilled by this announcement and proud to be joining forces with NASA in the final steps of the technology maturation,’ said Dr Franklin Chang Diaz, Ad Astra’s Chairman and CEO, in a statement.

‘We look forward to a very successful partnership as we jointly advance the technology to flight readiness.’

This is just one of the many technologies currently in development that will allow NASA to explore and colonize space in a much more efficient manner.

It seems that all of a sudden, Mars isn't that far away... is it?

‘Commercial partners were selected for their technical ability to mature key technologies and their commitment to the potential applications both for government and private sector uses,’ said William Gerstenmaier, associate administrator for Human Exploration and Operations at NASA Headquarters.

‘This work ultimately will inform the strategy to move human presence further into the solar system.’

Une très grande pyramide sous-marine a été découverte par Dioclétien Silva entre les îles de São Miguel et Terceira aux Açores du Portugal. D’après nos informations, la structure serait parfaitement carrée et orientée grâce aux points cardinaux.

Grâce à un GPS haute technologie , on a pu estimer que cette pyramide sous-marine mesurait 60 mètres de haut avec une base de 8000 mètres carrés. L’Institut Hydrographique de la Marine portugaise a actuellement la tâche d’analyser les données pour déterminer si la structure a été conçue par l’homme ou non.

Are Those Really Alien Megastructures? How Astronomers Plan To Investigate

There's something weird happening around a faraway star.

Skywatchers have noticed something "bizarre" in the data from the planet-hunting Kepler telescope. Located 1,480 light-years away, a star named KIC 8462852 has something big circling around it, and it's not a planet.

Usually when a planet passes in front of a star, it dims the star's light for a few hours or days, then disappears and returns again after completing its yearly revolution around its sun. But this particular star's light has dimmed for up to 80 days at a time, and at irregular intervals. That's no planet.

Nor is it likely to be a clot of dust and rocks. Those sorts of debris disks are only known to occur around young stars, and this star is not a young 'un. Plus, debris usually gives off extra infrared radiation, which is not the case here. The data has been validated by the Kepler team, and the telescope was functioning fine when it collected the data.

Perhaps the star's light is being blocked by huge pieces of alien architecture.

That leaves just a few possible explanations. One is that perhaps a wandering star pulled foreign comets into orbit around the star. Such a phenomenon is probably rare. "It's a bit of a stretch," says Andrew Siemion, a scientist with Berkeley's SETI center. The mysterious object(s) are blocking up to 20 percent of the star's light, which is much, much more than even a Jupiter-sized planet would block.

Siemion and two other astronomers have suggested an alternate explanation that may be even less likely than comets, but still very intriguing: Perhaps the star's light is being blocked by huge pieces of alien architecture.

Are We Alone?

As far as we know, life may have only evolved once in the universe. We have just one case study, which doesn't tell us much about what it takes to create life from nothing, or how often that might happen on other worlds.

Suppose life did arise elsewhere. What are the chances it would evolve into technologically advanced, intelligent beings? In 1961, the astronomer Francis Drake wrote an equation to help estimate the number of intelligent civilizations in the Milky Way.

fc=the fraction of planets with intelligent life that develop technologies that release detectable signs into space

L=length of time those signals are released

Most of the variables can't be filled in--it's a thought experiment more than anything--but it shows the chances of developing intelligent life are probably slim.

However, now that the Kepler telescope has discovered more than 1,000 planets around other stars, scientists calculate that there are probably billions of planets in our galaxy. Even if intelligent life is an extremely rare event, the sheer multitude of worlds provides a multitude of opportunities for nature to roll the dice.

Dyson Spheres

As civilizations become more technologically advanced, they become hungrier for energy. The physicist Freeman Dyson hypothesized that eventually, alien civilizations could become so advanced that they would need to harness all the energy from a star, perhaps sheathing the entire star in solar collectors. Some scientists think that looking for these so-called Dyson spheres could lead us to intelligent extraterrestrials.

Hypothetical Dyson structures could maximize the harvesting of energy from a star.

Other forms of the concept include Dyson swarms, which instead of enclosing the entire star in solar collectors would instead encircle it in one or a few orbits. This kind of structure wouldn't block as huge of a percentage of the star's light.

Siemion and his colleagues Jason Wright and Tabetha Boyajian think there's a chance that a structure like that could be blocking the light from KIC 8462852. And it wouldn't necessarily have to be solar panels either, says Wright. If there's a structure there, it could be a telescope or some sort of habitation.

NASA astrobiologist Chris McKay says the hypothesis “sure sounds interesting and should be followed up,” though he adds the caveat that he doesn't study stars or extraterrestrial intelligence.

Lynne Hillenbrand, an astronomer who studies stars at Caltech, says, “I think that the old adage of 'extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence' probably applies here.”

Looking For Evidence

To test their hypothesis, the team hopes to listen for the tell-tale signs of life around KIC 8462852. They've applied for time on the Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. They'll be competing with other scientists who want to use the giant telescope to answer other research questions. If their application is selected, next year the team will point the telescope's 100-meter dish toward KIC 8462852 and scan the radio signals emitting from that region.

Using technology that's being developed for the Breakthrough Listen project—a $100 million investment in the search for extraterrestrial life, which Siemion is involved in—the researchers will take the radio waves coming from KIC 8462852 and break them into many wavelengths, similar to a prism that separates white light into its rainbow components.

In nature, electrons move randomly, producing a mess of radio waves, says Siemion. But technology—or at least Earth technology—tends to release a lot of energy at a narrow band of frequencies, and for small windows of time.

After the “prism” (which is really just a computer) separates the radio waves from KIC 8462852 into different frequencies, “we'll look at each channel relative to the others,” says Siemion, “and see if there's a lot of energy at just one frequency.”

“If we heard narrow-band modulated radio emissions coming from that star, I can't imagine any other explanation,” says Wright, an astronomer at Penn State. No known natural phenomenon creates a radio signature like that. But the universe is big enough to contain plenty of unknowns.

"Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence."

Jon Jenkins from the Kepler team says he's never seen anything like what's happening at KIC 8462852, but "it’s not unusual for new phenomena to be greeted with an explanation calling for extraterrestrials that later prove to be due to more mundane but novel natural phenomena."

Siemion himself points out that when the first pulsar was discovered in 1961, it was given the designation LGM-1, for “little green men.” Like lighthouses of the universe, these rotating stars emit radio waves and other electromagnetic radiation at regular intervals.

In a speech, the pulsar's co-discoverer Jocelyn Bell Burnell once said: “We did not really believe that we had picked up signals from another civilization, but obviously the idea had crossed our minds and we had no proof that it was an entirely natural radio emission.” Now we know at least 1,800 pulsars exist, and the alien hypothesis has been ruled out.

If KIC 8462852 is emitting intriguing radio frequencies, Boyajian, Siemion, and Wright will explore further using a more sensitive telescope--the Very Large Array in New Mexico.

Analyzing the star's light using differential spectroscopy could also tell us something about what the mysterious star shade is made of, says Wright. "We measure the light of the star when it's bright, then again when it's dim, and the difference in brightness in different colors tells us what the intervening material is made of—dust, gas, comet stuff, whatever. That will help a lot."

And Boyajian adds that long-term observation across all kinds of wavelengths is imperative to unraveling the mystery. We may be waiting a while to learn what's going on out there.

We know that comets exist. We don't know whether intelligent life exists. As Hillenbrand points out, in science, the simplest explanation is usually the most likely one.

But even if it's not aliens, whatever gigantic weird thing is orbiting this star is probably going to be fascinating.

He has claimed that Alien Beings are trying to make contact now and there is NO denying this fact. The Former NSA employee has been in hiding in Russia since the major leak of information that was initially published in the Guardian newspaper a little while ago. This is not a man who appears to want fame, he has pretty much gave up everything in order to unite the world and educate us about what the US Government are supposedly lying to us about.

Temple Professor Claims Aliens Have Abducted Millions of Humans

No need to look to the stars in our search for extraterrestrial life; aliens might already be here among us on Earth...Or at least that's what retired Professor David M. Jacobs thinks.

According to Jacobs, extraterrestrial beings have been abducting and sexually molesting humans the world over for aeons, all to create a hybrid race of alien-humans who walk the earth unnoticed but will eventually take over the planet.

But Jacobs isn't your typical UFOlogist. Tenured for 36 years as a Professor of American History at Temple University, Jacobs is a 71 year old intellectual-type who, according to Philly.com makes his case with "well-reasoned, articulate explanations and applies scholarly approach to his research which he has shared in four books- printed by well-known and academic publishers."

Jacobs says he is well aware of the stigma that surrounds Ufology."I knew that it was embarrassing to the university," says Jacobs of his stance on UFOs. "I was not rewarded for my views [...] But you do not often find yourself in the middle of a phenomenon that allows you to make a contribution to something that could be of unsurpassing importance in human history," Jacob adds.

"What I'm doing will either be an interesting but nonessential footnote to popular culture or the most important thing that's ever happened to humankind. I see it as the latter," explains Jacob.

Jacobs claims his evidence is solid, collected primarily from the 150 abductees that he has interviewed over the years. He claims that these abductees independently report similar experiences, recalling common details of intense eye-contact, and neurological scanning. Based on researching this small sample, Jacobs has drawn the conclusion that the number of abductees across the world numbers in the millions.

Jacobs details some of his other conclusions to Philly.com's Dana Difilippo, stating, among other things, that the families of some abductees reported seeing their loved ones simply disappearing into thin air. Other findings included the discovery of mysterious scar tissue on the bodies of abductees and groups of people recalling the same mass-abduction events despite never having seen each other before.

According to the man who flew US president Barack Obama during his 2008 campaign tour, virtually all pilots believe in UFOs.

Andrew Danziger, a veteran pilot with 28 years of experience in the cockpit has also admitted he’s had his own brush with the unexplained.

The American pilot says he saw a white disc flying through the sky during a standard flight between Kansas and Iowa in April 1989. The white disc then changed into a “giant red ball” and glowed for about 30 seconds before disappearing into the clouds.

According to Danziger, both he and the captain who was also in the cockpit saw the spooky alien craft for about 40 minutes before it began to change color and disappeared.

“It looked similar to the moon faintly visible though thin fog, except the two were visible at the same time on opposite sides of our cockpit,” Danziger told the New York Daily News.

“While neither of us had any idea what we had saw one thing we were certain of, it wasn’t from here,” he said.
He says that when he reported the sighting, he was told that many pilots often spotunidentified flying objects while traversing the skies.

“We knew through the grapevine that pilots weren’t supposed to talk about UFOs so we swore the station agent on duty to secrecy and agreed not to talk about our incident to any of our co-workers.”

But Danziger is sure that he isn’t the only airman to have spotted an unexplained craft in the skies.

“I’m not going too far out on a ledge to say that virtually all pilots believe in UFOs,” he said

On Sunday October 11, 2015 it was a beautiful, warm, cloudless day. I went for a bike ride with my brother. We went to the Douglas Trail which starts in Rochester, MN and ends in Pine Island, MN. 13 miles each way. At about 10 mile in we were being followed by a large brown hawk. This hawk was acting crazy and would not leave us alone. We finally stopped and the hawk hovered about 30 feet above us. He was catching the wind and was staring at us.

We thought he was going to attack us. I have never seen or heard of a hawk doing this sort of behavior. We did nothing to provoke him. After about 30 seconds he flew off. We kept our eye on him until he was a distance away. We were just about to start our ride again when I looked up above the hawk in the distance and saw a white orb. The orb was way up high. It was a total cloudless day so it was the only thing in the entire sky. I looked at it for about 10 seconds then it started to grow in size. It changed it’s shape and became a large triangle craft. It was transparent but the sunlight reflected off it. It looked like glass. With the sunlight you could see it’s depth and it’s dimensions. Then it shot across the entire sky at an insane speed. It went from the western horizon to the eastern horizon in 1 second flat. A vast distance. It had to be traveling at thousands of miles per hour. It then stopped instantly. I yelled at my brother to look up. He saw it when it stopped and reached for his phone to take a picture. The object then blinked and shrank until it was gone. There was no time to get a picture. From the time it grew and went across the sky to the time it stopped and disappeared was only about 5 seconds. There was not enough reaction time to get a picture. After the sighting we continued our bike ride and witnessed no more actively.

BIZARRE UFOs that resemble the Star Wars Millennium Falcon have been photographed separately in north and central America.

The first sighting of a strange series of lights, up to 180 metres across, was said to have resembled the back of the fictional Rebel Alliance craft while in flight.

It was seen by four people on Cony Island, near New York, and has been reported to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) official database.

Roger Marsh, of UFO website Openminds.tv, said: "A New York street photographer driving to Coney Island reported capturing a disc-shaped object while taking ‘rapid fire images’ of a bridge.

"The witness was with three friends on their way to pick up another friend."

The photographer, who has not been named, said: "I always carry my camera with me. At the time I shot with a Fujifilm XT1 and had it on machine gun mode for rapid shots.

"We were passing by the bridge as I decided to just rapid fire some shots of the bridge free hand and I did not have my eye sight in my view finder.

"What caught my attention was a sudden string flash at the corner of my eye, kind of like lightening but in the distance. At that moment I took my finger off the shutter and reviewed my photos from the rapid fire when I came across the object.”

The witness does not believe the object was visible for very long.

He added: “The object moved at such speed that I only had it in the frames for about maybe a second or two. It’s also moved from the front of the bridge to out of the frame in that small amount of time.”

MUFON New York State section director Lillian Waters and field investigator John Reinhart investigated the case, filing a report stating: “Although not visible to the naked eye, one picture revealed a disc-like object with a dome shaped top.

“The object was very large – possibly 300 feet in diameter – and appeared to have bright yellow-orange external lights.”

A more recent image was captured on October 10 in the sky above the Tenayuca Pyramid in Mexico.

Another elongated object which appears to have a light at the rear is seen in the sky near what looks like a plane.

One viewer of both "UFOs" said: "They don't half look like the Millennium Falcon before it blasts into warp speed."

2) 1976 Tehran UFO Incident

One of the most well-documented military encounters with a UFO, this encounter saw two F-4 Phantom II jets losing control of communication and weapons systems as they approached a weird object in the sky over Iran.

Several military officers voiced the opinion that the object was not of terrestrial origin – and it was taken seriously enough that the President was informed.

3) Edgar Mitchell, the sixth man on the moon

Mitchell, who piloted the Apollo 14 landing module, has spoken regularly about his belief in aliens.

He claims that peace-loving aliens ‘stepped in’ during early tests of nuclear weapons, to prevent a nuclear war between America and Russia.

4) The Battle of Los Angeles

A rumoured enemy attack in 1942 led to air raid sirens and a huge anti-aircraft barrage – but then the authorities said it was all a false alarm.

Leaked photos, though, seemed to show lights and weapons trained on an actual alien spacecraft – and UFOlogists claim it was an attack by extraterrestrials.

5) The Westfall UFO Incident

This is one UFO encounter that’s hard to dismiss – because it happened at 11am, lasted 20 minutes, and was witnessed by 200 students and staff from a school in Westfall, Australia.

Reports have attempted to explain the encounter as being with a military target balloon or an experimental aircraft, but it has never been fully ‘solved’.

(Very) Local SETI: The Launch of a New UFO Science

Last July, Russian billionaire Yuri Milner announced the launch of a bold $100 million project "to reinvigorate the search for life in the universe." The amplified SETI initiative is "the most powerful, comprehensive and intensive scientific search ever undertaken for signs of intelligent life beyond Earth," according to the project's website.

"The chance of finding life has risen a billion-fold when we realized that Earth-like planets are not rare, but that there are literally billions of them just within our own galaxy," Astronomer Royal Lord Martin Rees stated at the time. Noting that the payoff could be "colossal," he wondered whether alien life to be discovered could be organic, or maybe "machines created by long long-dead civilizations."

As someone who has studied official UFO/UAP (Unidentified Aerial Phenomena) documentation for many years, I was naturally inspired -- even elated -- by this announcement. But at the same time, I couldn't help relating it to my all too keen awareness of the taboo against taking UFOs seriously, despite the obvious relationship of UFO phenomena to the quest for finding extraterrestrial life. After all, couldn't some UFOs be the machines that Rees referred to? And must they belong only to dead civilizations?

There is no sign that Milner's team will include our own solar system among the many others that it will search for signs of intelligent life. Most scientists have repeatedly stated that whatever data (if any) we have on UFOs are insufficient for study. Yet, as I made clear in my book UFOs: Generals, Pilots and Government Officials Go On the Record, there is plenty of evidence for the existence of unexplained aerial phenomena, and some governments (such as France and Chile), in cooperation with their own scientific teams, have made this a matter of official record.

Even so, the larger, multi-disciplinary search for extraterrestrial intelligence, seeking even the tiniest and most wide ranging clues, has never given a nod to this "forbidden realm" of intriguing, highly suggestive evidence -- in fact, it has been completely ignored. And at the same time, SETI has yet to find any evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence in its effort to detect radio signals or light from distant locations "that would reveal the presence of technically sophisticated beings," as SETI describes it.

But now, for the first time, a new group of scientists and other professionals is determined to change this outdated and unbalanced scenario, once and for all. Yes, we do need more scientific data on UFOs -- but who is going to provide it?

In October 2013, I attended a meeting led by Mark Rodeghier, scientific director of the J. Allen Hynek Center for UFO Studies, and political scientist Alexander Wendt, whom some of you might recognize as a co-author of the chapter "Militant Agnosticism and the UFO Taboo" from my book, to solidify a new, rigorously scientific approach to the UFO problem. Rodeghier and Wendt have since formed a non-profit, 501 (c)(3) organization called UFO Detection and TrAcking (UFODATA for short), which includes an international team of scientists and engineers with an interest in UFOs, including (among others) Massimo Teodorani, Dave Akers and Erling Strand, as well as several academic "silent partners" who do not want to be publicly identified. "We are establishing this project out of frustration with the impasse that the UFO debate has been at for over sixty years," Wendt says.

I acknowledge my own current involvement: I accepted Rodeghier and Wendt's invitation to join their Board of Directors, along with Philippe Ailleris, Project Controller at the Space Research and Technology Centre of the European Space Agency.

The organization has one goal and one goal only: to design, build and deploy a global network of automated surveillance stations that will monitor the skies full time looking for UFOs. UFODATA has no interest in alleged government conspiracies or adding more witness reports or FOIA documents to the thousands already on file. The idea here is that only a complete change of methodology toward a purely scientific approach to the UFO issue will enable us to move forward.

The monitoring stations, of which UFODATA eventually hopes to have dozens, will contain a suite of sophisticated instruments that will record numerous physical characteristics of any UFOs that appear in their range. They will all send their data back to a central location. Current projections are that the stations will cost about $10-20,000 each, thanks to the unprecedented convergence of high resolution digital camera technologies, off-the shelf scientific instrumentation, powerful low-cost computing platforms and far-reaching high-speed internet access. UFODATA will rely on crowd funding to finance the stations, allowing the millions of people who take UFOs seriously to be involved in the effort, independent of the scientific establishment. Some supporters may wish to host a station in their own location or offer their expertise to the organization.

The campaign will unfold in two phases initially. First, it will focus on filling gaps in its volunteer technical staff and on raising enough money by word of mouth to build a prototype station. This prototype will serve as a technical testbed, providing concrete evidence of capabilities to support Phase Two, which will launch the formal crowd-funding campaign. Phase Two will have a larger financial target, to fulfill the objective of building a small but fully functioning network of stations which will begin collecting data and also attract additional media, scientific and public attention to support further network development.

"Are we really alone? Or are there others out there? It's one of the biggest questions," the Milner announcement reads. "And only science can answer it." We completely agree. Rodeghier points out that we are simply taking SETI to its logical limit -- local SETI. "Several researchers interested in the conventional search for ET have pushed the boundaries to suggest that it is not misguided to search in the solar system, including around the moon, for ET artifacts or other evidence for extraterrestrial intelligence," he says. "But they have rejected looking in near-Earth orbit. Logically this prohibition makes no sense, and so with UFODATA we will also break the taboo of searching for signs of ET right here, not just millions of kilometers away."

He points out that SETI has spent huge amounts of money over fifty years with no success. "Why not, in comparison, take a few years with modest funding to study UFO evidence close to home?"

Short of US government recognition that UAP are worthy of investigation, I believe that this grassroots initiative is the best effort we can make to move toward a rational answer to the UFO question. Ironically, sidestepping government to study UFOs in this way could also ultimately help win respect for the issue within the political (as well as scientific) establishment. UFODATA should appeal to those who are tired of the misplaced certainties on both sides of the UFO debate -- conspiracy theorists convinced that UFOs are extraterrestrial spacecraft and debunkers equally convinced that UFOs don't even exist. Precisely because so little science has been done on UFOs, humanity is actually quite ignorant about what they are. This is a unique moment for something radically different, with the potential to unite all of us in a pivotal, larger goal. We now have the opportunity to elevate UFO investigations so that they become part of the larger scientific search for extraterrestrial life and will eventually be recognized as such by the world community.

For now, we remain agnostic about the nature and origin of UFOs. However, "whether or not we find any ETs, this will constitute a radical breakthrough in both the study and status of the UFO problem," says Wendt. "And if it does turn up any ETs, well, that would be one of the most important events in human history..."

Vreemde lichten/objecten  voor Belgische kust.

Vanuit een casino aan de Belgische kust worden een aantal foto’s genomen die niet alleen prachtig zijn om te zien, maar waar merkwaardige dingen op voorkomen.

Deze opnames zijn wel echt, in tegenstelling tot de vreemde UFO in China wat een photoshop exemplaar blijkt te zijn.

Tegenwoordig is, zeker op internet, lang niet alles wat het lijkt en zijn er ook meer en meer mensen die UFO-opnames vervalsen. De reden is uiteraard vaak dat wanneer ze het goed doen dit potentiëel behoorlijk wat geld kan opleveren in reclameinkomsten via bijvoorbeeld Youtube.

Gisteren publiceerden we een artikel over een vreemd object dat zou zijn gefotografeerd in China. Echt of niet, wij weten het niet, maar we zijn afgegaan op het verhaal dat erbij wordt verteld door een Engelse krant.

De foto’s zouden zijn genomen door een groep toeristen op een rondvaartboot. Wat blijkt echter? De foto’s zijn niet echt.

Volgens een lezer:

Ondertussen opnieuw de China UFO onderzocht en het blijkt photoshopped te zijn. Als je alle 3 de foto´s bekijkt zie je dat op elke foto dezelfde wolken partij op dezelfde plaats staat, wat op zich onmogelijk is als het een bewegende ufo zou zijn geweest.

Een lezeres uit België, waarvan wij aannemen dat wat zij zegt ook inderdaad zo is, stuurde ons mooie beelden (dank!).

Zij schrijft het volgende:

Op 21 september 2015 zat ik in het casino van Middelkerke op de zee en het strand uitte kijken. Ik nam foto's van de zee. Er was niets speciaal te zien.

Thuis kijk ik mijn foto's op de computer en zie een verschijning in de lucht. Er kan geen reflectie van de raam zijn, omdat ik mijn fototoestel op 5 cm van de raam hield. Ik stuur u beide foto's door.

Ze heeft inderdaad twee prachtige foto’s bijgesloten.

Op de eerste zie je linksboven een cirkelvormige formatie van UFO’s/lichten.

Hier het deel linksboven wat verder uitvergroot:

In de tweede foto zie je rechtsboven als je goed kijkt, twee cirkelvormige objecten of formaties.

Voor alle duidelijkheid is de rechterbovenhoek van de laatste foto hier wat verder uitvergroot.

Een reflectie in het raam van een object in het casino zoals een kroonluchter aan het plafond dat weerkaatst in het glas lijkt hier uitgesloten omdat ze de camera enkele centimeters van het glas hield.

Waar het echter wel veel op lijkt is op de UFO die ongeveer een jaar geleden boven de Amerikaanse stad Houston werd waargenomen en waar wij een artikel over schreven.

Een vreemd cirkelvorming object boven de stad die Houston toen dagenlang in de grip hield en waar zover bij ons bekend, nooit een verklaring voor is gevonden.

Is er voor de Belgische kust sprake van eenzelfde fenomeen of is er een andere verklaring voor?

Astronomers have spotted a strange mess of objects whirling around a distant star. Scientists who search for extraterrestrial civilizations are scrambling to get a closer look.

In the Northern hemisphere’s sky, hovering above the Milky Way, there are two constellations—Cygnus the swan, her wings outstretched in full flight, and Lyra, the harp that accompanied poetry in ancient Greece, from which we take our word “lyric.” Between these constellations sits an unusual star, invisible to the naked eye, but visible to the Kepler Space Telescope, which stared at it for more than four years, beginning in 2009.

The Tomorrow Report Ideas from a changing world Read more “We’d never seen anything like this star,” says Tabetha Boyajian, a postdoc at Yale. “It was really weird. We thought it might be bad data or movement on the spacecraft, but everything checked out.” Kepler was looking for tiny dips in the light emitted by this star. Indeed, it was looking for these dips in more than 150,000 stars, simultaneously, because these dips are often shadows cast by transiting planets. Especially when they repeat, periodically, as you’d expect if they were caused by orbiting objects.

The Kepler Space Telescope collected a great deal of light from all of those stars it watched. So much light that Kepler’s science team couldn’t process it all with algorithms. They needed the human eye, and human cognition, which remains unsurpassed in certain sorts of pattern recognition. Kepler’s astronomers decided to found Planet Hunters, a program that asked “citizen scientists” to examine light patterns emitted by the stars, from the comfort of their own homes.

In 2011, several citizen scientists flagged one particular star as “interesting” and “bizarre.” The star was emitting a light pattern that looked stranger than any of the others Kepler was watching. The light pattern suggests there is a big mess of matter circling the star, in tight formation. That would be expected if the star were young. When our solar system first formed, four and a half billion years ago, a messy disk of dust and debris surrounded the sun, before gravity organized it into planets, and rings of rock and ice. But this unusual star isn’t young. If it were young, it would be surrounded by dust that would give off extra infrared light. There doesn’t seem to be an excess of infrared light around this star. It appears to be mature. And yet, there is this mess of objects circling it. A mess big enough to block a substantial number of photons that would have otherwise beamed into the tube of the Kepler Space Telescope.

If blind nature deposited this mess around the star, it must have done so recently. Otherwise, it would be gone by now. Gravity would have consolidated it, or it would have been sucked into the star and swallowed, after a brief fiery splash. “It looked like the kind of thing you might expect an alien civilization to build.” Boyajian, the Yale Postdoc who oversees Planet Hunters, recently published a paper describing the star’s bizarre light pattern.

Several of the citizen scientists are named as co-authors. The paper explores a number of scenarios that might explain the pattern—instrument defects; the shrapnel from an asteroid belt pileup; an impact of planetary scale, like the one that created our moon. The paper finds each explanation wanting, save for one. If another star had passed through the unusual star’s system, it could have yanked a sea of comets inward. Provided there were enough of them, the comets could have made the dimming pattern. But that would be an extraordinary coincidence, if that happened so recently, only a few millennia before humans developed the tech to loft a telescope into space. That’s a narrow band of time, cosmically speaking. And yet, the explanation has to be rare or coincidental. After all, this light pattern doesn’t show up anywhere else, across 150,000 stars. We know that something strange is going on out there.

When I spoke to Boyajian on the phone, she explained that her recent paper only reviews “natural” scenarios. “But,” she said, there were “other scenarios” she was considering. Jason Wright, an astronomer from Penn State University, is set to publish an alternative interpretation of the light pattern.

SETI researchers have long suggested that we might be able to detect distant extraterrestrial civilizations, by looking for enormous technological artifacts orbiting other stars. Wright and his co-authors say the unusual star’s light pattern is consistent with a “swarm of megastructures,” perhaps stellar-light collectors, technology designed to catch energy from the star. “When [Boyajian] showed me the data, I was fascinated by how crazy it looked,” Wright told me. “Aliens should always be the very last hypothesis you consider, but this looked like something you would expect an alien civilization to build.”

Boyajian is now working with Wright and Andrew Siemion, the Director of the SETI Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. The three of them are writing up a proposal. They want to point a massive radio dish at the unusual star, to see if it emits radio waves at frequencies associated with technological activity. If they see a sizable amount of radio waves, they’ll follow up with the Very Large Array (VLA) in New Mexico, which may be able to say whether the radio waves were emitted by a technological source, like those that waft out into the universe from Earth’s network of radio stations.

Assuming all goes well, the first observation would take place in January, with the follow-up coming next fall. If things go really well, the follow-up could happen sooner. “If we saw something exciting, we could ask the director for special allotted time on the VLA,” Wright told me. “And in that case, we’d be asking to go on right away.” In the meantime, Boyajian, Siemion, Wright, the citizen scientists, and the rest of us, will have to content ourselves with longing looks at the sky, aimed between the swan and the lyre, where maybe, just maybe, someone is looking back, and seeing the sun dim ever so slightly, every 365 days.
