The staff at a new UFO museum spooked top FBI agents after allegedly discovering a secret memo establishing aliens exist. The unfolding of the Hakui Centre for UFO Research in Japanbrought some concerns to federal officials after museum workers found a document suggesting the FBI obtained three metallic saucer objects.
According to the memo, each object has three-foot tall occupiers. The US government reportedly kept files around the museum, creating craze of conspiracy theories.
According to the reports circulated online, the alleged flying saucers had been found in New Mexico. These things were described as being 50 feet in diameter with raised centers. Each one has three human-shaped bodies, but shorter at 3 feet tall, dressed in metallic cloth.
The memo reportedly blackened the name of Mr informant who said that the Government set up very high-powered radar in New Mexico where the saucers were found. It is believed that the mechanism of the saucers went crazy after the radar affected the saucers’ controlling mechanism.
WASHINGTON — The prototype of a rover designed to search for water ice at the poles of the moon passed a series of tests on Earth in August as project officials seek to line up funding and potential partnerships for the mission.
A NASA team put the prototype version of the Resource Prospector rover, dubbed RP15, through its paces on a test site dubbed the "rock yard" at the Johnson Space Center, testing some of the technologies needed to operate on the lunar surface.
"We wanted to take what we had learned so far and actually attempt to do an entire terrestrial mission, with as high a fidelity we could afford with the budget we're given," Dan Andrews, Resource Prospector project manager at NASA's Ames Research Center, said in an Aug. 31 presentation at the American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics' Space 2015 conference in Pasadena, California. Andrews said the project came up with the idea of RP15 in the fall of 2014, just before the current fiscal year started, and set a goal of building and testing the rover by the end of this fiscal year. A group at JSC that previously worked on Robonaut, a humanoid robot flown on the International Space Station, built the rover hardware, with software developed at Ames based on that used on the Lunar Atmosphere and Dust Environment Explorer mission.
The tests in the JSC rock yard, he said, successfully demonstrated some of the key technologies of the rover, including its ability to drill into the ground and capture samples. They also tested distributed operations, with teams at Ames controlling the rover at JSC.

Current plans for Resource Prospector call for launching the mission on a medium-class rocket, like SpaceX's Falcon 9, in 2020. The spacecraft would land on the lunar surface, near one of the poles, using a "crushable pad" landing system that eliminates the need for landing legs and makes it easier for the rover to roll off the lander and onto the lunar surface.
The rover will carry a neutron spectrometer to probe for water ice deposits into the lunar surface. The solar-powered rover would also make brief excursions into permanently shadowed regions of craters most likely to have near-surface deposits of ice, drilling for samples before retreating back into sunlit regions to analyze them.
Andrews said Resource Prospector is designed to carry out its complete mission within a two-week lunar day. That eliminates the complexity and accompanying cost of designing the rover to survive the long lunar night.
Resource Prospector has a planned cost of no more than $250 million, excluding launch. Andrews said the mission would most likely be carried out in cooperation with an international or commercial partner that would provide the lander. "We've been told by the [White House] Office of Science and Technology Policy that commercial partnerships, or international partnerships, trump everything," he said.
A leading option is to work with the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency, which is planning a lunar lander mission. NASA and JAXA have discussed potential cooperation on Resource Prospector for a year and a half, including putting together a report on how the NASA rover would be included on the JAXA lander.
"They are building, as you might imagine, a very impressive lander, more than we need to execute this mission," Andrews said. A problem with that option, though, is that the lander may not be ready for a 2020 mission, since JAXA is not planning to fly a smaller prototype lander until 2019. A second option, he said, is to partner with Taiwan, which is also studying a lunar lander mission.
Andrews said he has also visited with the three companies — Astrobotic Technology, Masten Space Systems and Moon Express — that are part of NASA's Lunar Cargo Transportation and Landing by Soft Touchdown initiative to support development of commercial lunar landers. Astrobotic and Moon Express are among the teams in the Google Lunar XPrize competition to develop lunar landers by a deadline that has been extended several times, most recently to the end of 2017. A decision on some kind of partnership is needed by June 2016 to support a launch in the fall of 2020, he said.
Work on Resource Prospector, including the RP15 rover, has been funded by NASA's Advanced Exploration Systems program office. Future support, though, remains uncertain. One issue, Andrews suggested, was the politics of lunar exploration in the wake of the decision to cancel the Constellation program in 2010. "It got swept up in general with the politics of 'no' to the moon," he said.
Andrews said Resource Prospector is now ready to go into Phase B, the planning phase of project development, provided the funding is there. "The politics may not be lined up yet," he said. "Everything's right but the local U.S. politics."

The physicist, who has suffered from motor neurone disease since his twenties, explained that the existence of aliens is beyond doubt.
"To my mathematical brain, the numbers alone make thinking about aliens perfectly rational. The real challenge is to work out what aliens might actually be like."

In July, Britain's most famous scientist helped to launch Breakthrough Listen , a 10-year, £64million project funded by US-based Russian billionaire Yuri Milner.

PARANORMAL investigators claim to have rumbled a top-secret Ministry of Defence (MoD) alien research centre hidden deep underground in a UFO hotspot.

The British Earth and Aerial Mysteries Society (BEAMS) has released a bizarre 109-page report, following a "special investigation" into the former MoD Defence Evaluation and Research Agency site now run by specialist defence, security and aerospace developer Qinetiq.
BEAMS claims Farnborough has had high UFO sighting and alien abduction activity for years and thinks this might be connected to the alleged secret base.
The group is convinced there is as much underground as above and what goes on there involves aliens, UFOs, intergalactic defence and futuristic flight development.
Their bizarre theory is based upon cryptic alien symbols they have "discovered" within the site, alleged intelligence service whistleblower testimonies, and the responses from psychic researchers, the report claims.
The BEAMS website says it was set up in 1991 as as a non profit-making studies group into the paranormal.
It said: "We have set up a network of active investigators who relay their gathered information through to our HQ.
"As reporters of the truth, duties of the BEAMS Team include research, interviewing, photography and journalism."

Two of its key researchers, chairman Kenneth Parsons and his "alien abductee" partner Hilary Porter, carried out the "inquiry" and said evidence of the underground areas came from government whistleblowers.
But they said the smoking gun evidence for the secret base were cryptic signs in the building and on site.
The couple concluded that part of the site's road system has been made to look like an alien being depicted in ancient Aboriginal paintings in Australia, as a sign of the base's significance.
On top of this they said part of the building has been made to look like a flying saucer.
The report said: "As with the top-secret Area 51 in Nevada, and how that officially did "not exist" for decades…if what we are about to expose 'does not exist' either (as it is bound to be claimed), then our Government/military have absolutely nothing to fear from us talking about it - do they?"
The pair claimed the Qinetiq site was the biggest of three secret underground facilities, also in the UK, including two other suspected ones.

Their report said Government whistleblowers had revealed: "Officers at Chicksands regularly simulated possible outcomes of nuclear war with their counterparts operating from an underground command centre beneath Qinetiq in Farnborough.
"One source (who holds a sensitive government post) says that he knows several people currently employed at British underground facilities where acquired alien technology and genetics programmes are being carried out."
The couple said the Cody technology park was also under tight security with armed guards and secret cameras.
But the clincher, in their opinion, was the roundabout system near the main building.
Referring to an aerial slide of the roadways on site, which highlighted this roundabout, the report said: "We suggest that this is a stylised, diagrammatic representation of a grey/reptilian figure - just like the Aboriginal supreme creator paintings attempted to portray - which is only visible like this from the air."
Posing the question "why was it there?", the report said: "Why incorporate a massive image of an alien, or supreme creator within a top secret subterranean military site - somewhere so sensitive that it is virtually our own British equivalent of the Area 51 complex in Nevada."
They surmised that the powers behind the site were confident the public would never see through their cryptic code, but "those" who needed to would recognise it instantly.
Besides, if the roundabout did not do the trick, there was more.
The couple concluded the roof and canopy of the main building had purposely been designed in the shape of a flying saucer just to hammer home the purpose of the secret base to those in the know.
They said the existence of the "underground" parts of the site described by "sources" were further proved by Qinetiq's involvement in mining coupled with a strange rumbling noise they allegedly heard a cross Farnborough over the last 15 years, which they deduced was it being secretly expanded.

Three so-called psychic remote viewers given the name of the site, but no more details, as part of the research, also came back with descriptions of a highly technological and disturbing underground base, they claimed.
Not convinced? Neither are some other UFO investigators.
Nigel Watson, author of the UFOs: The Nazi Connection, said: "It sounds like they are trying to bring a lot of separate things to make (something) whole."
But he added that "the idea" of alien or flying saucer bases being underground was "nothing new", dating back to at least 1962, when Albert Bender, founder of the International Flying Saucer Bureau (IFSB) in Bridgeport, Connecticut, claimed that alien beings took him to an underground HQ in Antarctica.
He said: "Sceptics think such stories are the product of malicious disinformation or fantasies, yet that doesn’t stop people believing in their existence. Perhaps if we all go under that flying saucer ‘shelter’ we might all believe."
An MoD spokesman said: "We do not comment on UFO matters."

This is one of the most compelling UFO cases on record, it has been referred to as Australia’s Roswell. This group of students held a 40 year anniversary of this event in 2006. The skeptics claimed that this was some type of secret military aircraft but this type of technology is not available today let alone forty years ago. The Westall UFO encounter is an event that occurred on 6 April 1966 in Melbourne, Australia. Around 11.00 am, for about 20 minutes, more than 200 students and teachers at two Victorian state schools allegedly witnessed an unexplained flying object which descended into a nearby open wild grass field. The paddock was adjacent to a grove of pine trees in an area known as The Grange (now a nature reserve). According to reports, the object then ascended in a north-westerly direction over the suburb of Clayton South, Victoria, Australia. A class of students and a teacher from Westall High School were just completing sports on the main oval when an object, described as being a grey saucer-shaped craft with a slight purple hue and being about twice the size of a family car, was alleged to have been seen. Witness descriptions were mixed: Andrew Greenwood, a science teacher, told The Dandenong Journal at the time that he saw a silvery-green disc. According to witnesses the object was descending and then crossed and overflew the high school’s south-west corner, going in a south-easterly direction, before disappearing from sight as it descended behind a stand of trees and into a paddock at The Grange in front of the Westall State School .
After a short period, witnesses now numbering over 200, the object then climbed at speed and departed towards the north-west. As the object gained altitude some accounts describe it as having been pursued from the scene by five unidentified aircraft which circled the object. The Dandenong Journal covered the encounter in detail and ran two front page stories. The first was on 14 April. and the next was on 21 April. Broadsheet newspaper, The Age ran a very small article about the Westall incident on 7 April 1966.

The digital eye is more perfect and cannot be fooled as easily, so a cloaked UFO will often appear semi-cloaked. News states: Mike Pittaro posted the latest sighting on Facebook – a 3-plus minute video shot above the Home Depot area of the plaza at just after 7 p.m. on Sept. 21, 2015. Pittaro stated in the recording that he was unable to see the orbs with the naked eye but when looking through his camera, could seem the orbs clearly. The video was shot after the sun was setting and dusk began to set in. The detail is being so carefully mapped from a camera some 150 miles from the planet's surface that it will now be possible to distinguish a 1-metre-sized (3 feet) feature on the surface, allowing for better mission preparation than ever before.

NASA Scientists Reveal Four Alarming Facts About Extraterrestrial Life On Mars
Last weekend, NASA called for a press conference to announce a major discovery regarding the planet Mars. During the meeting, they revealed some pretty shocking information, completely changing what we once thought about the “red” planet that, suddenly, doesn’t seem so red anymore.
1. Mars Has Flowing Rivers Of Water On It
Yesterday, NASA announced that Mars actually has rivers of flowing water on it. What we once believed to be an arid and rocky desert of a planet is actually seasonal, not unlike our own planet Earth.
Lujendra Ojha, a planetary scientist at the Georgia Institute of Technology, made the discovery by using images from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter.
This raises a number of other questions, many of which are brought up in the press conference below.

Obviously, with the announcement that there is water on Mars, the possibility of life near the surface becomes ever more plausible. The press conference also goes into more details about the atmosphere and condition of Mars, and how the planet could have supported life in the past. I will elaborate on this in the next section.
Another interesting fact is that the possibility of life in the interior of Mars has always been quite high.

3. Mars Was Once A Planet Very Much Like Earth, With A Giant Ocean
“The more we observe Mars, the more information we’re getting that it really is a fascinating planet, from the Curiosity Rover we now know that Mars once was like a planet very much like Earth, with long salty seas, with fresh water lakes, probably with snow capped peaks and clouds and a water cycle just like we’re studying here on Earth … Something has happened to Mars, it lost its water.” – John Grunsfeld, five time space flown astronaut, Associate Administrator Head of NASA Science Mission Directive
John also goes on to discuss the high likelihood that Mars previously sustained life, before whatever happened to the planet that lead to its change in climate. Scientists are still struggling to work out what exactly that event or series of events may have been.
“Mars is the planet most like Earth … [and in the past,] Mars was a very different planet, it had an extensive atmosphere, and in fact it had what we believe was a huge ocean, perhaps as large as two thirds the Northern Hemisphere. And that ocean may have been as much as a mile deep. So Mars indeed three billion years ago had extensive water resources. But something happened. Mars suffered a major climate change and lost its surface water.” – James Green, NASA director of planetary physics
As pointed out in the press conference, this discovery is so exciting because it suggests that Mars could possibly sustain life in the present day. This is not only due to the presence of water; rovers have discovered that there is a lot more humidity in the air than we once thought. Indeed, the soils are moist, hydrated, and full of water.

4. Something Happened To The Planet That Drastically Changed Its Climate
As you can see from the two quotes in the above section by John Grunsfeld and James Green (taken from the press conference below), something happened to Mars that drastically changed its environment. It seems the climate altered significantly, but what caused this change? Scientists at NASA have yet to figure this out, but some interesting theories have been proposed.
Given the fact that scientists are almost certain that life once existed on Mars, and without question throughout the universe, is it really that farfetched to assume that a race of intelligent beings once inhabited Mars?
We already have statements from a number of astronauts suggesting that intelligent extraterrestrial life has already been discovered.

So, did historical intelligent life on the planet Mars have something to do with its drastic climate shift? At this point it’s impossible to say, but according to Dr. John Brandenburg, PhD, and plasma physicist, life on Mars was eradicated by nuclear war. He believes that a couple of intelligent civilizations from ancient history were responsbile for this, and in his published works, argues that the coloration and composition of Martian soil points to a series of “mixed-fission explosions” which lead to nuclear fallout on the planet. Like the astronauts quoted above, Brandenburg is no crackpot, he was involved in the Clementine Mission to the Moon, which was part of a joint space project between the Ballistic Missile Defence Organization (BMDO) and NASA. Maybe intelligent life did have something to do with it? Brandenburg certainly seems to think so, but regardless of what caused Mars’ climate shift, we’ve certainly been left with some fascinating information to consider.

A Mercer County neighborhood is fed up with an elderly man on their street, so much so that they’ve taken him to court for excessive use of spotlights.
Wearing a baseball hat, 78-year-old Arthur Brown came out of his foil-wrapped house on Virginia Road in Hermitage Thursday, not to talk, but shining a spotlight, and snapping a few pictures.
Nancy Raich lives across the street.
“Over the years he’s become a real problem. He has a lot of issues fearing aliens,”
Raich said. Raich said this behavior has been going on for more than 20 years, and she’s had enough. She’s 72 and wants to downsize, selling her home to buy a condo, but no one wants to buy it.
“Who wants to buy my house? A nice decent house, garages, acreage in Hermitage, a nice place to live, when this yahoo across the street decides he wants to shine lights on me?”
Raich said. And she’s not alone.
" He used to have an alarm that would go off on and off on and off and that was annoying,” neighbor Donna Misinay said.
“So had to finally get rid of that, now his new thing is, come out here and chase you with a spotlight.”
It’s gotten so bad, they’ve taken it to court. And just within the past few days, the city has filed a petition for an injunction to force Brown to stop using the spotlights.
“It’s a violation of the city’s zoning ordinance to have excess lighting that adversely affects neighboring properties,” Hermitage City Manager Gary Hinkson said.
As for the folks on Virginia Road, they’re hoping the lights go out soon.

After 1 a.m. on June 19, 2014, in a suburban Denver town, a police officer on patrol noticed an oval-shaped pattern of multicolored lights on the other end of a park.
Thinking it was illegal activity — a curfew violation, perhaps — he drove his car toward them when suddenly the radiance vanished. Upon closer inspection of the area, he saw his breath in the air and discovered a kind of frost left behind: a dry, powdery light coating on the grass and trees, that he observed nowhere else throughout his shift that night.
The officer later reviewed surveillance footage that showed lights steadily traveling down a bike path, moving toward the area where he found the frost.
The story of mysterious snow-like remnant during a Colorado summer — Case 57173 — was one of several highly regarded sightings explored Friday during a small press conference by the Mutual UFO Network, or MUFON, a Newport Beach-based nonprofit billing itself as the world's largest and oldest UFO investigative and research group.
Founded in 1969 in the Midwest, the group moved its headquarters to Newport, to an office on Campus Drive, about two years ago.
Friday's conference was part of MUFON's 46th annual symposium, held over three days at the Hotel Irvine on Jamboree Road. This year's event was themed as expanding ufology — the study of unidentified flying objects — and opening new connections of the study into academia, industry and media.
"This is a real phenomenon," said MUFON Executive Director Jan Harzan. "It's happening every day on our planet. We're receiving reports by the thousands every month."
For all the seriousness of potentially discovering life on other planets and changing the face of humanity, Harzan wasn't above the occasional joke: "Maybe it'll make it on late-night television some night," he said of the conference. "The top 10 UFOs."
MUFON leaders noted that 2014 was a particularly prolific year: 8,678 reported UFO sightings worldwide. The organization has field investigators, with backgrounds in science and law enforcement, throughout the world that examine reports and conduct interviews. Some cases are considered solved when that something in the sky is discovered to be an airplane or meteor.
Others, like Case 57173, remain officially unsolved.
Attendees of the symposium, when not listening to lectures, explored the exhibitor area. Books like "Alien Agenda: The Return of Nephilim," by A.S. Judkins and Michael E. McDaniel, were for sale near DVDs, whose titles included "DNA Analysis of the Eleventh Impact Surgery."
The $9 video was of a lecture by Dr. Roger Leir who discussed an object believed to be implanted by an alien species.
Shirts were for sale too. Printed on the back of a MUFON shirt was "Others talk, we investigate ... "
Nancy du Tertre, a former attorney who now calls herself the "skeptical psychic," was at the conference to talk about exo-linguistics — or how to talk to alien species.
Communication with them, she said, is not limited to audible speech.
"It's quite a bit more open than that," du Tertre said.
Nearby was Cheryll Jones, a former CNN anchor, who contends that media coverage of UFOs and government sources have caused the topic to be taken less than seriously.
It could be "the greatest news story in history," she said, but instead, UFO coverage is often relegated for laughs as "the kicker story at the end of newscasts."
"These things are not mainstream news," Jones said. "The UFO story is not treated with the same type of vetting as other news stories."
Stanton Friedman, a former nuclear physicist and icon in the UFO world for being the first civilian to investigate the 1947 Roswell crash, said ufology is a topic that deserves more respect.
"It's time that we started getting the facts in hand," he said.
In the social media age, Friedman said, he sees people more willing to come forward to report sightings, though "the fear of ridicule is the dominant factor."
"'Don't bother me with the facts; my mind's made up,'" he added. "That's been the past attitude of the nasty naysayers."
Robert Schroeder, a former aerospace engineer who lectures about UFOs' "inertia-defying acrobatics in our atmosphere," said the biggest problem with the study is the lack of good data.
Solving that, though, would be massively expensive.
It needs equipment — X-ray detectors, gamma ray detectors and the like — monitoring the skies to gather data from any passing UFOs, he said.
But, Schroeder noted, "You just can't go into your local hardware store and buy them ... what we need is a Silicon Valley billionaire to help us out."

Accordingto the UFO reporting website, mufon.com, an anonymous Seguin woman was sipping her coffee on the porch, when she saw something out of this world.
With the sun slowly rising, she sees at first what she describes as a "weird" cloud. But then the cloud moves, and flattens out like a disk.
So what could it be?
Inside Davilas, a Seguin barbecue institution, they've seen the photos, and got their own theories, like Chris Gutierrez, "ummm well it looks like it could be something in the distance."
Geremina Davila has a little more refined answer, “a cloud or something.” But it’s definitely not a UFO, she says.
Across the restaurant, Violet Tindle agrees, "I have no idea, but it's not a UFO."
The woman who took the photos said she did, because she didn't think anybody would believe her. Thankfully she did because seeing is believing for Christian.
Our interaction went something like this: Christian: I think that's 100% an alien. Andrew: really? Christian: oh yeah. Andrew: why? Christian: because look at it it's such an alien come on now. Andrew: you've got the Star Wars shirt on. Christian: you know it."
Sarah Dozier's *pretty* confident, "I think it could be a cloud but it could be a UFO. I believe they're out there."
Seguinpolice say their dispatch was all quiet on the UFO front on Wednesday. Sgt. James Sprinter says there’s no need to worry, “Not as far as I am concerned. I've been here for 25 years and I've never seen one.
Extraterrestrial life or just a weird cloud, we know this much: "We're not really sure what she saw, but if they come in wanting some BBQ, we're here to serve you,” says Adrian Davila, manager of Davilas.

NASA Confirms Evidence That Liquid Water Flows on Today’s Mars

These dark, narrow, 100 meter-long streaks called “recurring slope lineae” flowing downhill on Mars are inferred to have been formed by contemporary flowing water. Recently, planetary scientists detected hydrated salts on these slopes at Hale crater, corroborating their original hypothesis that the streaks are indeed formed by liquid water. The blue color seen upslope of the dark streaks are thought not to be related to their formation, but instead are from the presence of the mineral pyroxene. The image is produced by draping an orthorectified (Infrared-Red-Blue/Green(IRB)) false color image (ESP_030570_1440) on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the same site produced by High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (University of Arizona). Vertical exaggeration is 1.5.
New findings from NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) provide the strongest evidence yet that liquid water flows intermittently on present-day Mars.
Using an imaging spectrometer on MRO, researchers detected signatures of hydrated minerals on slopes where mysterious streaks are seen on the Red Planet. These darkish streaks appear to ebb and flow over time. They darken and appear to flow down steep slopes during warm seasons, and then fade in cooler seasons. They appear in several locations on Mars when temperatures are above minus 10 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 23 Celsius), and disappear at colder times.
“Our quest on Mars has been to ‘follow the water,’ in our search for life in the universe, and now we have convincing science that validates what we’ve long suspected,” said John Grunsfeld, astronaut and associate administrator of NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. “This is a significant development, as it appears to confirm that water — albeit briny — is flowing today on the surface of Mars.”
These downhill flows, known as recurring slope lineae (RSL), often have been described as possibly related to liquid water. The new findings of hydrated salts on the slopes point to what that relationship may be to these dark features. The hydrated salts would lower the freezing point of a liquid brine, just as salt on roads here on Earth causes ice and snow to melt more rapidly. Scientists say it’s likely a shallow subsurface flow, with enough water wicking to the surface to explain the darkening.

The image is produced by draping an orthorectified (RED) image (ESP_031059_1685) on a Digital Terrain Model (DTM) of the same site produced by High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (University of Arizona). Vertical exaggeration is 1.5.
“We found the hydrated salts only when the seasonal features were widest, which suggests that either the dark streaks themselves or a process that forms them is the source of the hydration. In either case, the detection of hydrated salts on these slopes means that water plays a vital role in the formation of these streaks,” said Lujendra Ojha of the Georgia Institute of Technology (Georgia Tech) in Atlanta, lead author of a report on these findings published Sept. 28 by Nature Geoscience.
Ojha first noticed these puzzling features as a University of Arizona undergraduate student in 2010, using images from the MRO's High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE). HiRISE observations now have documented RSL at dozens of sites on Mars. The new study pairs HiRISE observations with mineral mapping by MRO’s Compact Reconnaissance Imaging Spectrometer for Mars (CRISM).
The spectrometer observations show signatures of hydrated salts at multiple RSL locations, but only when the dark features were relatively wide. When the researchers looked at the same locations and RSL weren't as extensive, they detected no hydrated salt.
Ojha and his co-authors interpret the spectral signatures as caused by hydrated minerals called perchlorates. The hydrated salts most consistent with the chemical signatures are likely a mixture of magnesium perchlorate, magnesium chlorate and sodium perchlorate. Some perchlorates have been shown to keep liquids from freezing even when conditions are as cold as minus 94 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 70 Celsius). On Earth, naturally produced perchlorates are concentrated in deserts, and some types of perchlorates can be used as rocket propellant.
Perchlorates have previously been seen on Mars. NASA's Phoenix lander and Curiosity rover both found them in the planet's soil, and some scientists believe that the Viking missions in the 1970s measured signatures of these salts. However, this study of RSL detected perchlorates, now in hydrated form, in different areas than those explored by the landers. This also is the first time perchlorates have been identified from orbit.
MRO has been examining Mars since 2006 with its six science instruments.
“The ability of MRO to observe for multiple Mars years with a payload able to see the fine detail of these features has enabled findings such as these: first identifying the puzzling seasonal streaks and now making a big step towards explaining what they are,” said Rich Zurek, MRO project scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in Pasadena, California.
For Ojha, the new findings are more proof that the mysterious lines he first saw darkening Martian slopes five years ago are, indeed, present-day water.
“When most people talk about water on Mars, they're usually talking about ancient water or frozen water,” he said. “Now we know there’s more to the story. This is the first spectral detection that unambiguously supports our liquid water-formation hypotheses for RSL.”
The discovery is the latest of many breakthroughs by NASA’s Mars missions.
“It took multiple spacecraft over several years to solve this mystery, and now we know there is liquid water on the surface of this cold, desert planet,” said Michael Meyer, lead scientist for NASA’s Mars Exploration Program at the agency’s headquarters in Washington. “It seems that the more we study Mars, the more we learn how life could be supported and where there are resources to support life in the future.”

Lockheed Martin built the orbiter and collaborates with JPL to operate it.
