Breckenridge Police say they are investigating reports of three “shiny” objects in the sky Friday morning. “NORAD is not tracking any anomalies in that location. We are investigating,” said Army Major Beth Smith, NORAD spokesperson. Multiple people have called in to report the objects floating in the sky. The Summit County Sheriff’s Office is also investigating. Police have called the FAA. The FAA says they have not had any calls from the public regarding the sighting. Witnesses say the objects would sometimes form triangles or straight lines across the horizon. 9NEWS reporter Matt Renoux said he doesn’t believe the objects were drones or weather balloons, because the objects appeared stationary for as long as 15 minutes at times. “They would just sit there… without moving an inch on our viewscreen in the camera,” Renoux said during a 5 p.m. live report. After about 15 minutes, a flash of light would appear and the “objects would take off across the mountain ridge,” Renoux said. A Utah television station reported Thursday about a similar incident happening in the Salt Lake City area.

This is not a quote from a recent article in a magazine for social change, but the opening statement of chapter 2 in the recent Outlook on the Global Agenda 2014 report from the World Economic Forum, best known for its annual meeting of the global elite in Davos. World leaders are finally becoming more aware of the dangers of the enormous, and widening, gap between rich and poor, and that this trend cannot be allowed to continue unchecked was also reflected in President Obama’s State of the Union speech of January 2014: “Today, after four years of economic growth, corporate profits and stock prices have rarely been higher, and those at the top have never done better. But average wages have barely budged. Inequality has deepened. (…) The cold, hard fact is that even in the midst of recovery, too many Americans are working more than ever just to get by – let alone get ahead.” He then went on to outline policies meant to address the dangers inherent in the growing disparity in income and opportunity.

One way that people with a heart and some common sense often express their disbelief about humanity’s dysfunctional ways of relating to itself and the planet is by taking the perspective of an outsider: “If a Martian were to visit our planet…” followed by an observation of the way humans have complicated life for themselves or other creatures that makes no sense on any level beyond a profit motive.

Perhaps it is not surprising, in this context, that it has taken world leaders so long to recognize the dangers engendered by these social inequalities. While many readers of these pages will be aware that we have been visited and are being visited by people from other planets, many might not know that these same visitors have repeatedly voiced their concerns about the way we have chosen to organise society around the need to earn money for daily living and pursuing the “dream” of limitless wealth, no matter if it kills the planet. For instance, in 1954, during his sojourn on a mothership, George Adamski was told by his hosts from space: “If man is to live without catastrophe, he must look upon his fellow being as himself, the one a reflection of the other.” After many years of sustained contact with the people from other planets Adamski added in December 1964: “[T]o have a healthy and prosperous society, that which causes the most trouble must be removed. As we all know, this stigma is poverty in the midst of plenty. It is the cause of sickness, crime, and the many evils that we know…”

A civilian consultant with the military in the late 1940s, Daniel Fry was contacted July 4, 1949 by a saucer pilot who landed in front of him in the desert after Mr Fry had missed his bus home. At some point during his contact, which he claims included a ride in the saucer from California to New York and back, Mr Fry was told, “With freedom from want comes freedom of fear and your civilization would be safely past the critical point in its development.”

Likewise, Truman Bethurum, a road worker from California, was contacted late July 1952. His contact did not involve a trip in the ‘scow’, as he called the saucer, but he was invited aboard for discussions with its captain on seven or eight occasions. Of these, he said he “got the impression that cooperation among all of their people is an inherent feature of their lives, and that poverty is unknown. Also, that what we call riches or wealth is certainly more evenly distributed than on our earth.” As a result, the captain tells him, there are no criminals or conmen on their planet (identified as ‘Clarion’). “Not even speculators. (…) If we had them on Clarion it would soon be of small worth; we’d have mansions and slums, as you do.”

Buck Nelson, a farmer and saw mill owner from Denver who was first contacted late July 1954, wrote after having visited some of the planets in our system: “Some of our commonly used methods of making a living would be absolutely unacceptable to them. One of these methods is our practice of making money from money in so many different ways.”

Finally, Brazilian contactee Dino Kraspedon (pseudonym for Aladino Félix), who had his experience around the same time that George Adamski had his famous encounter in the California desert in November 1952, was told quite unequivocally even then: “…wars take place against the wishes of most people, because poor people do not fight easily. Carnage has become the perquisite of the rich and powerful… Abundance blinded them, gluttony clouded their vision. Strife is the product of egoism.”

In the event, governments and the military managed to discredit the experiences and information that these men were asked to share with the world in the midst of the Cold War. Yet, in the 1960s one contactee was given unprecedented insights into the social organisation of the home planet of his contactors.

Dutch businessman Ad (short for Adrian) Beers and his family were sailing the Oosterscheldt, a large estuary in the south west of Holland, one summer evening, when his yacht’s compass seemed broken. While sailing back to the harbour, he was suddenly staring into a strong blue-white searchlight. Switching the engine into reverse, full power, could not prevent the boat hitting something solid. Upon closer inspection it seemed as if Mr Beers’ boat had hit the hull of an overturned ship and he saw a body floating in the water nearby. As he jumped overboard with a lifeline, he landed on a hard surface at a depth of just three feet. Shortly after he had secured the lifeline to the floating body someone in a similar outfit as the drowning person, which looked like a space suit, came wading through the water to assist him in his rescue efforts. He then describes how the sight of an “animal-like face, with large square pupils in the eyes, which were both hypnotic and self-assured” struck him like a thunderbolt.

It was only then that he realised they were visitors from another planet who, out of gratitude for his rescue efforts, went on to offer him detailed information about their world. Over the course of two days he was shown vivid images of the way society on ‘Iarga’, as they called their planet, was organised accompanied by detailed explanations of the underlying philosophy.

Being the director-general of the Dutch importer for Swedish lorry manufacturer Scania, Mr Beers presented his story as science fiction under the pseudonym of Stefan Denaerde (‘Steve of Earth’), in the hugely successful book Buitenaardse beschaving (‘Extraterrestrial Civilization’) in 1969. In 1977 the first English edition was published as Operation Survival Earth, while an expanded edition was published five years later by the late Wendelle Stevens as Contact from Planet Iarga.

With his own background as a business executive Mr Beers was immensely impressed by the, what he considered terrifying, efficiency of the planet’s social organisation: “This must be a universally governed planet, but seemingly so strictly governed that everything was streamlined and standardized. What a terrible thought!” Yet, in deploring what he perceives as a lack of the characteristic that lies at the core of the ills of present-day society, at the same time he witnesses to some degree of perfection what the participants in the Italian Friendship Case were taught by their contacts from space, and which seems to be the aim for humanity as we respond more and more to the Aquarian energies of unity and synthesis: “Their weak point is the development of their individuality. They do almost everything in groups, they think collectively and they obey the laws of their society to the letter. They live for and through the friendship and love within the group.”

Planetary governments and social systems
About the level of attainment of his hosts the writer says: “Their definition of the word civilization or culture has nothing to do with the scientific or technological development level, but with the manner in which the community takes care of the handicapped or weaker beings. The word superculture defines the situation that arises when through individual effort, a group structure has arisen which abolishes any discrimination against any individual.”

Reminiscent of the findings in the Brandt Commission’s 1980 report North-South: A Programme For Survival, that the only way out of our problems on Earth is a recognition of our mutual interdependence and the need for global policies to ensure the basic needs of every human being, Mr Beers’ contacts from space tell him: “Our cosmic universal economic system can be compared to both communism and the capitalist Western economy. One can also say that our cosmic economics can’t be compared to either. (…) It is only through this system that a race can achieve a cultural level of social stability.”

Santa Catalina Channel "Cloud Cigars"

ABSTRACT:  Since 1962 there  have been recurring sightings of so-called cloud-cigars over the Catalina  Channel in Southern California.  These  hovering, seemingly energized clouds are reported both day and night, and  are accompanied by sightings of smaller, disc-like objects miles inland, while  the larger objects remain high above the Pacific Ocean between the mainland and  Catalina Island,  twenty (20) miles off  the coast.  Available facts indicate the  possibility that the  small craft  "materialize" within the developing cloud.  Ways are suggested in which CUFOS can obtain cooperation  from civilian and military authorities in monitoring these phenomena.
                                                    
SANTA CATALINA ISLAND'S CLOUD CIGARS:   The transitory nature of UFOs dismays  researchers. The objects appear unexpectedly to startled witnesses and in most cases  are gone before any permanent record of their passage can be obtained.

In  rare instances, however, the appearance of UFOs can be predicted by reason of  their repeated occurrence in some particular region. One of these regions is  over the Pacific Ocean between the coast of Southern California and the off-shore  islands, notably Santa Catalina Island, which lies about twenty miles (20) west  of the mainland.

We  are concerned specifically here with a rectangular area between thirty-three (33)  degrees and thirty-four (34) degrees latitude north and between  one-hundred-nineteen (119) degrees and one-hundred-seventeen point five  (11.7.5) degrees longitude west. Other "channel" and  "basin" areas, named for the cities and islands associated with them,  are involved here in question, is more meaningful. In most cases, the objects were  viewed between the mainland and the large off-shore island of Santa Catalina  Ref. 1) (Also see  Figure A)

The  complex sea floor off southern California is becoming one of the best-known  submarine areas in the world.  Data on the  topography, sediments, rock formations and seismic character have been  published in several sources (Ref. 2).

There  has typically always been poor navigational control in this area, but it is  difficult to correlate this fact with the numerous magnetic anomalies existing  here
(Ref. 3).  

The  following material has never been published or, indeed, never collected  together before in cogent form.  It is  necessarily incomplete and speculative. When viewed as a whole however, it  might afford the UFO research field an opportunity to study long-lived UFO  phenomena with scientific instrumentation. Hopefully, readers of this paper  will offer ideas on how such instrumentation can be obtained, set up and  maintained.

THE 1962 MYSTERY: The first hint that the skies above the Santa  Catalina Channel held more than seagulls occurred, to the best of our  knowledge, in August 1962. Two women witnesses, of which this author (Druffel)  was one, had brought their six small           children, ages eight to one year,  for a leisurely day at the Long Beach, California seashore. About 2:00 p.m. one  of the women (author) noticed a small, white rectangular cloud, which looked exactly  like a newly-formed section of vapor trail. It seemed to be neatly sliced off  at each end and transplanted in the blue, smogless sky. Its apparent diameter  was about four millimeters at arm's length, and its width was one-half its          length.

It  was positioned at about forty (40) degrees elevation, approximately one hundred  ninety-five (195) degrees azimuth (magnetic) high in the sky. It seemed about  midway between the shore and the island of Santa Catalina, which was clearly visible  to the south and southwest. 

There  was no evidence of high-flying jets and no other vapor trails or clouds in that  quadrant of sky. After about fifteen minutes, the witness became aware that it  was not a normal vapor trail. It was too short, too isolated and did not change  shape or size in the slightest. Neither did it move in any direction [in spite  of a brisk wind blowing on the seashore.) The witness called her friend, Mrs.  James (Aileen) Cummings's, attention to it, and the two women continued to  observe the small white rectangle. For about thirty more minutes it remained  motionless, unchanged in size and shape.

Then  something began to occur within the tiny cloud. Its white vapor began to  "churn", presenting an impression of internal activity. It enlarged  two or three times; the time was now about 3:15 p.m.

During  the next half hour, it slowly changed into an oval, twenty to thirty (20-30) times  its original size. It still hovered at forty (40) degrees elevation at the  original azimuth, but now its apparent diameter had blossomed to four (4) centimeters  in length and about two (2) centimeters in width at arm's length. It was  solid-appearing, unlike a normal cloud. Its vaporous, oval shape was definite,  and at no time did the edges          dissipate beyond the perimeter.  There was a constant churning motion all over the visible surface, somewhat  like water boiling in slow motion. The object seemed angled at approximately twenty-five  to thirty (25-30) degrees, its longest diameter being
          positioned to the witnesses'  right (See  Figure B).

The mysterious sight kept the witnesses'  attention, mainly because it seemed that "something" was inside its  vaporous exterior. At times it seemed as though the object were about to  "open up" to reveal whatever might be lurking within.  About forty-five (45) minutes after the  formation of the oval, the witnesses saw flashes of light coming from the  object. The flashes were bright white and momentary. They extended about a  diameter's length out from the surface. They gave the impression of strong  reflections from the bright sun off some metal surface within the cloud, or of  electric discharges. At          no time was any sound heard. The  flashes were periodic, separated by minutes, with no regular rhythm.

During  the time the flashes were observed, numerous military jet trails were seen in  the south, evidently over and beyond Catalina Island. These trails were  observed from four to ten (4-10) degrees above the island, which rises about  three (3) degrees above the horizon from that viewing position. None of the jet  trails appeared within thirty (30) degrees of the churning, flashing cloud.  However, these trails indicated the presence of a number of highly active, military  jets.

After  watching the flashes in the cloud for about fifteen minutes, the witnesses  approached a nearby lifeguard, hoping he could lend them binoculars so they  could get a closer view of the activity within the cloud. He denied having  binoculars, and when the witnesses tried to explain to him about the strange cloud  he showed no interest.

About  5:00 p.m. the witnesses collected their small children, preparatory to making  the long thirty-five mile drive back to their Pasadena homes. They left  reluctantly, pausing several times during the quarter-mile walk to their cars  to stare at          the object. It still hung motionless  high in the sky. They discussed reporting the incident to the Long Beach Press-Telegram but  rationalized that the object must have been seen and reported by many others.  It had been in view more than three hours.   However, there was never any media coverage of the event, to the  witnesses' surprise (Ref. 4).

As  awed as the witnesses felt over the cloud's strange exterior, the activity  within it was so inexplicable that both felt inadequate to even verbalize it.  Consequently, it went unreported until this date. They remained totally unaware  of the possible significance of the occurrence until years later.  More on the possible significance of this  sighting, after further correlative material had surfaced, has been presented  below.

THE 1968 "CLOUD-CIGAR":   The second instance of a "vaporous cloud" over the Catalina  Channel occurred on July 9th, 1968.  By  this time, the Los Angeles NICAP Subcommittee [to which the author belonged] had  established SKYNET, a tracking-and-filter center designed to collect and investigate  public UFO reports.

On  that summer evening, the phones rang off their hooks at the Project  Coordinator's [Druffel's] home in Pasadena.   Thirty air miles south in Long Beach and surrounding communities,  citizens began reporting a large, glowing mass positioned high over the  Catalina Channel. Accompanying the silent, hovering cloud were several glowing,  smaller globes which maneuvered in the same area of sky (See  Figure C).

The  first call came from a group of five teenagers gathered at the home of Kevin  Allgreen, three miles north of the shore line. At 9:35 p.m. they had noticed a  gray-white, diamond-shaped haze under the full moon in the south-southeast. At 10:05  it began moving fifty-five (55) degrees in a horizontal line toward the west.  By 10:15 it had returned, intact, to its original position near the moon.  Maneuvering near the large
          object were five smaller cloud-like  objects, oval-shaped with clearcut edges. Two of these were grayish and three  "kind of white." 

The  boys, aged thirteen to eighteen years, viewed the objects through binoculars  and determined that all of the unknown masses looked "solid". They  kept their shape and precise edges through subsequent maneuvers. Although the  edges of the larger object were "fuzzy," it did not seem to be a  normal cloud because it moved too fast during its brief journey westward and  back again, traveling fifty-five (55) degrees in three (3) minutes. It was many  times the size of the smaller balls, an estimated five to six (5-6) times the  diameter of the full moon.  The end  facing west was long and narrow, and the part facing east was shaped "like  a diamond."

The  boys were convinced that they were viewing something highly unusual. They  estimated the main mass was about ten (10) miles high. About 11:00 p.m. the  large object turned reddish-orange in color and began traveling upward at an  approximate          angle of thirty (30) degrees. By  11:30 it "just faded away," taking five (5) minutes to dissipate out  of sight.

Following  hard on the teenagers' first call, the family of Mr. I. Castano of Compton also  called SKYNET. From their home seven miles north of the Long Beach witnesses,  his family had viewed a group of four oval, cloud-like objects the size of          pinheads at arm's length, or about  one-eighth the size of the full moon. First seen at 9:30 p.m. and disappearing  at 10:00 p.m. they were glowing white with precise edges. They were gathered around  the moon when first seen, and then started departing  "right and left." They  seemed to be far out in space. The objects spread out and then dashed toward  one another," Castano related. '"It looked like some kind of a  war." To Mr. Castano, who had never believed in the existence of UFOs  before, the event was completely mystifying (Ref. 5).

The  Castanos did not describe the large cloud, but this is probably because he was  much further north than the Long Beach witnesses. Was he seeing the smaller  related objects on a mission inward from the Channel (Ref. 6)?

Another  report which seems to validate the above speculation comes from the files of  Paul Wilson, another local UFO researcher. He was informed by his neighbors,  Michael and Leslie G. that they had seen a glowing UFO about 9:30 or 10:00 p.m.  on the same night. It traveled toward their home in Hawthorne (fifteen air miles  northwest of Long Beach), approaching from the east.  It was oval and slightly smaller than the  full moon. It was shiny white with clearcut edges, seemed to be several miles  away, and traveled toward the south away from the moon and back again. It was  soundless, spun in an apparent circle "around the moon" and  afterwards let off streams of smoke or vapor from its side. Duration of  sighting was twenty (20) minutes (Ref. 7).

From  the similarities in description from the Castano and G. families, it might be  assumed that they were viewing the smaller objects during a foray inland. The  Castanos saw four objects, the G's a single one. We might speculate that the  five small obJects associated with the main cloud-mass had spilt up into two  groups, while the parent object or "cloud cigar" hovered high over  the Pacific.

While  all this activity was going on, SKYNET was making frantic efforts to obtain  additional witnesses and documentation. The only SKYNET member residing near  the coast, Jim Griebel, was contacted. His home was three miles north of the  Long Beach          witnesses.  Through binoculars he could see a cloud-like  conglomeration low on the southerly horizon. Whether composed of one or two masses  he was not sure, but the mass(es) seemed diamond-shaped on one end and rounded  on the other. The bright light from the moon dissipated Griebel's view, but  there seems little doubt that he was seeing the primary cloud-object which was  being viewed from Long Beach.  Including  Griebel, twelve (12) witnesses in all, from four (4) independent groups,  reported the July 9th, 1968 event.

Nothing  about the above cases seemed to click into place at the time of their  occurrence. The 1962 case remained an enigma for thirteen years, shoved back  into the inner recesses of the two witnesses' minds.  That "something" could appear from          almost "nothing" and  retain shapes, position, and activity for over three hours was inexplicable.  The 1968 case, which tasted at least an hour and one-half, was considered a  possible "cloud-cigar."  This  UFO-type is described by Aime Michel in his classic book, Flying Saucers and the Straight-Line Mystery  (Ref. 8).

THE ENIGMA OF 1973: On December 20, 1973, another mystery occurred  over the Pacific Ocean between the mainland and Catalina Island. This sighting  was as bizarre and long-lived as the two which had gone before. Although at  first glance it appeared unassociated with the vaporous masses in the first two  events, further study has convinced this author that all three phenomena have  many factors in common. Therefore, the three cases are being presented together  in order that opinions can
          be sought from other researchers.

About  2:15 a.m. on December 20, 1973 Michael Wagner of Pacific Palisades noticed a yellow  glowing "blob" hovering in the south-southeast at an elevation of  approximately twenty (20) degrees. He called it to the attention of Robert B.  Klinn,          known in UFO circles as a skilled  researcher. Their viewing position was about twenty miles northwest of Long  Beach.

The two witnesses took turns studying the  light through a 16-power Navy spyglass, which they were able to steady on a ledge  at Klinn's residence. As seen through the telescope, the "blob"  resolved into a precise arrangement of round, yellow-gold lights. Though the  entire mass appeared larger than Venus with the naked eye, through the 'scope  the lights encompassed an area of approximately three (3) millimeters. They  were arranged in a vertical column bisecting a horizontal column of equal  length. Additional columns of light appeared and arranged themselves into a  nearly perfect light-studded triangle.  The  witnesses adjusted the telescope, and when Klinn again          looked through it about three  minutes later, the complex of lights had assumed the shape of a huge,  cigar-shaped "machine."   Its  edges were clearcut against the sky. Along its side was a horizontal row of  about five huge, fiery round lights along the          length of the object. These lights  were very much larger and brighter than the ones observed earlier; in fact, the  entire  object had expanded in size at  least twenty times. (See  Figure D).

Each  light held tremendous activity within it, "as if looking  inside a boiling steel furnace, and even more  so". Their primary color was yellow, but many other colors were visible in  their teeming mass. As the witnesses watched astounded, the first light  ballooned up "like a critical explosion" and smashed through the  light directly to its right. That one in turn seemed to flare up, as did each  in the entire row, as the first   fireball  traversed the entire row. At the extreme right, the fiery,explosive light  paused and pulsated about twice per second; then the smashing reaction returned  along the row of lights from right to left. The entire trip back and forth took  an estimated          thirteen (13) seconds.

As  this was happening, a fin-shaped appendage with a vertical  row of smaller yellow lights was moving back  and forth along the top of the cigar-shaped object "in a very mechanical  way."  Meantime, the entire object,  which now covered more than one and one-half (I 1/2) centimeters in the  'scope's field of view, was moving slowly westward at an estimated five (5)  degrees per hour.  Toward the end of the sighting,  which lasted about one and one-half hours, the object changed shape once more.  The appendage on top widened, the lights flickered out, and the object became a  darkened cone-shape with a rounded bottom. One faint red light blinked with  regular rhythm on the top. Then the object faded from view at 3:37 a.m. (Ref.  9).

ATTEMPTS AT CORRELATION: The July 1968 manifestation at least seemed  to fit into a recognized UFO class, that of the so-called cloud cigar, widely  assumed to be a conglomerate of smaller discs, alternate names being  "carrier craft" or "mother ship." But the 1962 and 1973  sightings cannot so easily be categorized.   Both of these objects changed shape, grew larger and more complex, and  demonstrated intense internal activity reminiscent of electrical discharges of  high intensity. Is it possible that the 1962 sighting, and the 1973 sighting as  well, were incidents of "materialization" into our space-time?

In  trying to determine with witness Bob Klinn the possibility that what he had  seen was related in some way with the 1962   and 1968 objects, Klinn pointed out that there was no cloud or vapor  associated with it. He felt that the 1973 object was a metallic structure and  that he was viewing the clashing spheres through "holes" of some kind  in its side.

To  the author's mind, however, in order for the 1973 witnesses to view the  activity within in its entirety, the side of the object might have been transparent  or otherwise open to view.  Is it  possible that the object was not metallic, but some sort of solid, though  transparent, material? Could they have been viewing a similar type of cigar-shaped  solid structure which had been surrounded by thick haze during the summer  sightings of 1962 and 1968?

SUGGESTIONS FOR FURTHER STUDY: The purpose of this paper has been  to alert researchers to the fact of recurring, long-lived phenomena in the  Catalina Channel area. It would be of much value to UFO research if this region  could be placed under surveillance with scientific instrumentation.

This  paper would not be complete unless it was pointed out that the Channel area has  for the past thirty years abounded in UFO reports of all types. Many  surface-type and underwater UFOs have been reported, but compared to the  long-lasting "cloud cigars" they have been unclear and short-lived.  Nevertheless, the sightings exist in sufficient numbers to alert us that this  area is, for some reason, of constant concern to someone, or something,  unknown.

Space  does not permit here to discuss these surface sightings in detail.  Suffice it to say that they are reportedly continuing  up to the present.  They could most  probably be perceived by the same type of surveillance net used to detect the high-altitude  "cloud cigars."  It is  important to reiterate five points concerning the latter type:

Consider  the value to UFO research if, within the next few years, one of these  long-lived UFO phenomena can be detected and studied.  Consider, too, the possible spinoff from a  surveillance system— the detection of frequent UFO surface phenomena in the same  area.

Passengers In Car Photograph Large Blob Ball Of Light Chasing Odd Shadow Creature (Photograph)

I have seen balls of light this big before and believe they are related to UFO activity. I saw one similar to this sitting on the ground whilst going through trails in Georgia via car. It shot up into the sky fast as lightning and was this size and just went strait up into the heavens. This photograph I found on Facebook being shared. Not sure of the original source. Hard to make out the shadow creature in the photograph of course. But the ball of light is peculiar. What do you think?

I took a pic w/my phone just as a noise came from the left. A big shadow leaped from the tree into the woods. The light reacted & bounded after it.

Ghost Dog Keeps Watch

WILMINGTON — Of all the doomed spirits haunting North Carolina, few inspire heartsick tears more than Boss the tugboat captain’s dog – devoted canine, dockside hero, fearless pooch who died for love.

She trotted at the heels of Capt. William Ellerbrock, tagging along for pints of ale or jaunts on the Cape Fear River, lending comfort to the rough-handed skipper. They made boon companions, ashore and afloat – a pair whose friendship endures in Wilmington folklore.

Then one night in 1880, she darted into a burning building after her beloved master, perishing beside him in the flames, a torn piece of his coat in her charred muzzle. To this day, her whine can be heard along the waterfront, especially, it’s said, to those being careless with fire.

So sacred is Boss’ memory to the Port City, so hallowed her bravery, that her image appears chiseled on Capt. Ellerbrock’s grave, the only North Carolina dog so honored, as far as I know.

To this day, when guides lead tourists on the ghost walk down Front Street, they weep through the telling of Boss’ story, stricken more than a century later.

“It doesn’t have a lot of ghostly occurrences,” said John Hirchak, lead guide and author of “Ghosts of Old Wilmington,” “but it’s just such a tragic and moving story that it’s hard to resist. I’m bawling my eyes out every time I work on it.”

Young William Ellerbrock fled Germany in upheaval and landed in the 19th-century South, a culture where he never exactly fit. Knowing no one, fumbling with the language, he sought shelter with an uncle who taught him the tugboat trade.

He missed the old country and his friends, assimilating poorly, until one day his uncle gave him a present: the dog he named Boss.

Stories differ on Boss’ breed, a Newfoundland or a plain mutt. But history agrees that the two never parted, especially that April night when the alarm bells rang out over the waterfront. One account states that Ellerbrock handed Boss over to a bystander before he rushed in to help the victims, and that his dog broke free and chased after him. But Hirchak suspects that Boss wouldn’t have parted from Ellerbrock even for a second.

However it happened, the pair weren’t discovered until the next morning, the captain face down in the ashes and pinned under a collapsed wall. When crews lifted them from the wreckage, a woman in the crowd called out, “There’s something in the dog’s mouth!”

When they inspected, they found the pup’s teeth still clenched around her master’s sleeve, torn off as she tried to drag him to safety.

“This was big news when it happened,” Hirchak said. “It’s like the little girl falling down the well. Everybody felt like they had something invested in it.”

Capt. Ellerbrock and Boss rest in a corner of Oakdale Cemetery, a green and wooded graveyard hung with Spanish moss. They’re not far from 367 unknown Confederate soldiers and hundreds more victims of yellow fever. Newscaster David Brinkley’s grave is within shouting range.

By all accounts they do not appear in the burial ground, choosing instead to bob peacefully on some celestial riverboat. But Hirchak tells this story:

Long after their death, the fire largely forgotten, a merchant running a new business near the spot had an electrician do some work in an old upstairs corner. While he was poking around, he and his crewmen heard a dog whining nearby, and after searching around, they couldn’t find the animal anywhere.

But once he’d taken a good look, the electrician came back downstairs and advised against the work. Too risky, he said. A fire hazard.

He’d never heard the story of Boss the valiant, Boss who charged into an inferno. But he must have heard a phantom canine growling across the decades, a warning from trusty, long-eared protector. - News Observer

Riddle of how medium knew the fate of ships

The eerie peace of a suburban seance was shattered by knocking at the door. Into the house burst several police officers who manhandled the medium, searched for evidence of trickery and interviewed each of the sitters.

That raid in Ella Road, West Bridgford, in 1956 effectively ended the career of one of the most famous mediums of the century. No charges were brought but five weeks later the woman who is sometimes remembered as the 'last witch' died.

The irony was that a woman suspected by Notts police of being a common conwoman had, 12 years earlier, been taken so seriously that she was tried under the 1735 Witchcraft Act and jailed.

Seventy years on her descendants continue to campaign to win a posthumous pardon for Helen Duncan. On the website www.helenduncan.net, her family state: "Since her death, Helen has been considered a martyr among mediums and spiritualists. A campaign for Helen to be awarded a posthumous pardon has been continually rejected to this day."

Helen was born in Scotland in 1897. She married Henry Duncan with whom she had six children. From an early age she is said to have displayed the 'gift' of medium with the spirit world. A feature of her sittings was her ability to emit 'ectoplasm' from her mouth during her trances – a stringy white substance that is supposed to give form to spirits and allow them to communicate.

To raise the family, Duncan worked in a bleach factory by day and by night accepted the small donations of friends who came to her sittings.

In 1931 Duncan was denounced as a fraud by both the Morning Post newspaper and the London Psychic Laboratory, which had examined her.

The laboratory's director, Harry Price, declared that the so-called ectoplasm was in fact cheesecloth Duncan had swallowed and then regurgitated during her seances.

She was also prosecuted at Edinburgh Sheriff's Court in 1933 for affray and being a 'fraudulent medium', for which she was sentenced to a fine of £10 or a month's imprisonment. But it was during the Second World War that the mum from Callander became famous – to some, infamous.

At a seance in Scotland in 1941, Duncan announced that a major warship had been lost. A military intelligence officer was at the sitting. He checked the claim with an Admiralty contact. His contact was unaware of any loss, but 15 minutes later it was confirmed that HMS Hood had been sunk off Greenland with the loss of 1,400 sailors.

Duncan held a second seance in Portsmouth in November, 1941. The spirit of a sailor in uniform reportedly materialised complete with the name HMS Barham on his cap band. Sitters say they heard him declare to his mother (who was there) that his ship had been sunk with a great loss of life. When the shocked lady said that couldn't be correct as she had not been notified, the spirit sailor claimed she would be in three weeks before fading away.

The sailor's mother was so concerned that she contacted the Admiralty who sent two officials round to question her.

The Admiralty knew through German Enigma machine radio communications intercepted by Bletchley Park that the Germans thought only minor damage had been caused to HMS Barham yet the truth was the ship had blown up a few minutes after being hit by a torpedo.

As the Royal Navy wanted the Germans to think HMS Barham was still a threat in the Mediterranean rather than laying on the bottom of it, they had gone to great lengths to keep the sinking from the public. In fact, it was not officially announced until late January 1942.

Police raided another of her seances in Portsmouth. Duncan and three sitters were arrested for vagrancy. She was remanded in custody and the charge was later amended to conspiracy. However, when she appeared at the Old Bailey she faced charges under the Witchcraft Act of 1735.

The trial caused a media sensation and was covered in the newspapers, many of which revelled in printing cartoons of witches on broomsticks. The defence announced that Duncan was prepared to demonstrate her abilities in the witness box. This amounted to conducting a séance in the court while in a state of trance and the offer was refused.

The prosecution alleged that she 'pretended to exercise or use human conjuration that through the agency of spirits of the deceased, dead persons should appear to be present'.

Duncan was convicted, sentenced to nine months, and branded in one newspaper headline as 'a humbug'.

Duncan applied her psychic gifts in Holloway prison and was visited by Prime Minister Winston Churchill who, according to Duncan's friends, considered the Act and prosecution to be 'obsolete tomfoolery', and promised to make amends.

Duncan was released in September 1944. The Witchcraft Act was repealed after the war, and in 1951 the Fraudulent Mediums Act was introduced. It was aimed by Home Secretary Sir Herbert Morrison not at genuine practitioners, but at tricksters. In 1954, spiritualism was officially recognised as a proper religion by an Act of Parliament.

On October 24 and 25, 1956, Duncan held seances at the house in Ella Road, West Bridgford, at the invitation of the occupant, Joe Timmins, a respected physiotherapist and a spiritualist. The magazine Psychic News reported on the incident the following month. It alleged that a couple who attended the Saturday seance and booked for the Sunday session were, in fact, undercover police officers.

Guests assembled in a first-floor bedroom at Mr Timmins's home. After 20 minutes, reported Psychic News, 'banging was heard on the outside door accompanied by the bell ringing... when the door was opened the police came in'.

"According to Timmins's account, they made a dive over the sitters in the front row and tore down the curtain which formed a cabinet in the corner of the room. Then two policewomen grabbed the medium while policemen took flashlight photographs. By this time the lights were on..."

Witnesses said the officers kept asking for masks, beards and a shroud. No evidence of trickery was found and there were no charges brought, but the disturbance may have been significant. On the Helen Duncan website, a relative says "in their ignorance the police had committed the worst possible sin of physical phenomena – that a medium in trance must never be touched or a light shone on the medium. If this happens the ectoplasm returns to the medium's body too quickly and can cause immense – sometimes even fatal – damage."

Witnesses reported that Duncan was ill, and a doctor was called. Later, said Psychic News, two second-degree burns were found on her stomach. At previous seances where interruptions occurred, it was reported, she had suffered burns.

Six weeks later, on December 6, 1956, she died of a heart attack.

Today, 58 years after her death, a campaign started by the Psychic World Newspaper in 1997 on behalf of her family to clear her name is still fighting its corner, despite a 2005 Criminal Cases Review Commission ruling that it was 'not in the public interest'. - Nottingham Post

Lifetime Events...I'm Scared

Amsterdam, NY - This next event, the 4th in my life, is something I cannot bottle up anymore. It's been over 20 years. Even as I type this, I am genuinely scared. And all because of a pee break.

Early morning, approximately 4 AM, during a television commercial break, I got up and went to pee. On my way there, out of the corner of my left eye, I noticed, through the window, what appeared to be, someone trespassing, walking in our driveway using a flashlight. Immediately, I thought vandalism to the cars or raiding the garden. I went to the backdoor, there are two doors to walk through. Inner main door, outer screen door. The inner door is metal and uses a skeleton key. Not exactly a stealthy combination when you are trying to sneak up on an intruder. Well whatever it was did not seem to be aware of my presence until I was standing on the landing looking at it. We made "eye contact" and then the thing morphed into a machine and approached me, rising up to my level.

Sorry for the CapsLock, but, I AM KEEPING, WHAT THIS THING LOOKED LIKE TO MYSELF....UNTIL I CAN SPEAK WITH EITHER, Stanton Friedman and/or Bill Birnes.

UFO Sighting Orb Triangles in Breckenridge, Colorado in October 2014

On October 3, 2014, hundreds of people in Breckenridge, Colorado, reported seeing strange, white, orbs of lights hovering in the sky. The orbs hovered in the same general area for over three hours, at times moving into a triangle formation. These exact same “orb triangle” UFOs are appearing all over the world.

A Kansas witness at Valley Center has submitted a photo of two UFOs taken by a friend that is “amazingly clear,” according to testimony in Case 60432 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

“I got this picture from a friend that took it,” the reporting witness stated. “The orb is the first thing you see and then to the left you notice a triangle-shaped thing.”

The witness uploaded one image with the MUFON report, which was filed on October 7, 2014. The image was taken on October 3, 2014.

“The picture is amazingly clear. There is even some sort of designs on the ship that are visible.”

Valley Center is a city in Sedgwick County, Kansas, population 6,822. Kansas MUFON is investigating. The above quotes were edited for clarity. Kansas has a current UFO Alert Rating of 5 with a low number of recent reports nationally. Kansas had 7 UFO reports in August 2014 – the 31st highest reporting state – while California had 99 reports as the highest reporting state. The above quotes were edited for clarity. GIVE ME A SPECIFIC EXAMPLE OF WHAT YOU DO TO GET OFF TRACK AND THEN WHAT YOU DO TO GET RID OF THOSE FEELINGS?

 

HICKSON: Well, when I get a feeling like that, that I’m not doing right, that I’m wrong, I’ll just go off by myself somewhere. If nothing else, I’ll go over on the tree farm, back to the woods and sit down, and I’ll just begin to realize that I have a mission to do, that I have to do it. I get at peace with myself again. And I come on back and get back to doing these things again.

 

DOING WHAT THINGS?

 

HICKSON: This is why I know that it’s meant for me to tell people and to go and talk to people. A lot of times I’ll maybe get telephone calls, they want me to come to a college or university somewhere and lecture. Well, maybe I don’t want to go, maybe I just say I can’t go, you know, I’ve got this to do, I just can’t take the time, I don’t have the finances. I’ll put them off, well then it just–it bugs me–it’s on me until I just have to call them up and tell them I’ll do it. Then I’m at peace then. That’s an example, see.

 

YOU’VE MENTIONED THAT YOU’VE HAD A CHANCE TO SELL THE RIGHTS FOR A BOOK OR TO THE MOVIES AND PROBABLY MAKE SOME PRETTY GOOD MONEY, BUT YOU DECIDED NOT TO DO THAT.

 

HICKSON: Yeah. See, you know, anybody needs finances to live on. Well, I had my health, and I’ve always been able to make a livelihood for my family, you know, we’ve had hard times like everybody else on different occasions. I can’t see something like this–now I couldn’t have done it, I guess if I wanted to I’d been compelled not to by a stronger force, I think. But if you believe in something as strongly as I do, to throw it out there to people or the public, something that’s going to affect their lives, not only yours, in time to come, and throw something out there that’ll make me rich, you know, I don’t believe in that…I could have made a lot of money, thrown something out there that would have been partly fiction, with the big buildup and everything else, but what purpose has that done? I mean, it just can’t happen that way…The knowledge that I’m beginning to learn now and to understand now, I wouldn’t have gained that knowledge, something would have been wrong, I think that knowledge wouldn’t have been coming to me, It would have been taken away from me.

 

YOU’D HAVE BEEN UNCHOSEN.

 

HICKSON: That’s right. It was a hard decision for a human being to make, but I want to see it through to the end.

 

YOU’VE MADE A REFERENCE—ALMOST LIKE A BIBLICAL REFERENCE–TO 12 CHOSEN PEOPLE.

 

HICKSON: I think the world will begin to see at the end of this year, you’ll see 12 people emerging that’ll carry on a crusade and let the world know what’s going to happen.

 

ANY SPECIFIC REASON WHY IT’S THE NUMBER 12?

 

HICKSON: I don’t know.

 

HOW DO YOU KNOW IT’S 12?

 

HICKSON: This has been–this has been told to me. I won’t elaborate any further on it right now…when the time comes, I will. I’m gaining knowledge now that I can’t fully understand myself yet…I don’t know where I’m going, I don’t know.

 

HAVE YOU MET ALL 12 OF THESE OTHER PEOPLE OR DO ALL OF THEM EVEN EXIST RIGHT NOW?

 

HICKSON: I don’t know. I do know I will, though.

 

HAVE YOU MET ANY OF THEM?

 

HICKSON: I don’t know. I probably have, but I don’t know. It’s a lot for a man to have to live with and keep his sanity and try to live a normal life. It’s a lot for a man to have to do.

 

YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE ONE OF THEM.

 

HICKSON: I know that to be a fact.

 

SINCE YOU MADE THAT REVELATION, IT WOULD SEEM LIKE, IF THERE WERE ANOTHER ONE, THAT HE (OR SHE) MIGHT HAVE WANTED TO TELL YOU, OR YOU MIGHT WANT TO TELL HIM–

 

HICKSON: Well, I think when the time comes, you know, we’ll be aware of it then. There’s a lot of things going to happen this year, a lot of strange things are going to happen this year.

 

CAN YOU GIVE ME AN EXAMPLE I CAN CATEGORIZE–SOMETHING STRANGE WITH THE WEATHER, THE WORLD POLITICAL SITUATION?

 

HICKSON: (He ponders for a long moment.) Well, let’s wait till another time.

 

HOW DO YOU KNOW YOU’RE NOT SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT CERTAIN THINGS? IS IT A FEELING?

 

HICKSON: Well, it’s a feeling, it’s a terrible feeling, it’s very hard to explain. I’ve even tried to even get started talking about it, and I just can’t do it. It’s just a feeling that I’m not supposed to talk about it. I can’t compel myself to do it. And I need to find out why, I need to know about these things. Maybe it’s not time. Evidently, it’s not time for me to talk about it.

 

BUT YOU HAVE A FEELING WHEN IT IS, YOU’LL KNOW?

 

HICKSON: Yes. Oh yes.

 

(THE DISCUSSION TURNS TO THE RIVERBANK ABDUCTION.)

 

HICKSON: Inside of there (the craft) there was so much light in there, It seemed to me it was glowing from the walls, the overhead, and the floor and I was just in the center of it. Made me feel like I was in an electric light bulb or something, you know. There was three or four days that my eyes was something like I’d had a bad welding flash. They were that way for a few days, and I believe the light done that, I don’t know.

 

YOU COULD NOT CLOSE YOUR EYES DURING THE TIME INSIDE THE CRAFT? YOU COULDN’T BLINK?

 

HICKSON: I couldn’t dose my eyes. I couldn’t blink. I could move them but I couldn’t blink. If I could’ve closed them, I’d have closed them against that light. I have a feeling for some reason they wanted me to see, you know, the inside of there.

HICKSON: No, I could not. You know, when you’re talking you can hear your own self, and I was trying to talk and I couldn’t hear myself talk, so I wasn’t talking. I was trying to get some words out, I wanted to see what they were going to do with me, you know. Because, you know, I was thinking ‘this is it, nobody will see me again.’ And Charlie was scared, I’ll be frank with you, no need for me to lie about it, you know, cause I didn’t know what to expect.

 

DO YOU THINK MAYBE YOU WERE TALKING, BUT THAT YOU JUST COULDN’T HEAR?

 

HICKSON: No, I don’t. I don’t know. You know, if I was talking, I didn’t hear myself talking.

 

DID YOU KNOW YOUR MOUTH WAS MOVING?

 

HICKSON: Well, I guess my mouth wasn’t moving, cause I couldn’t move anything else (he says he was completely paralyzed except for eye movement). It was a strange feeling that I haven’t been able to even explain it to myself, and I know I can’t explain it to anyone else, you know. Maybe someday I’ll understand it, you know, what happened to me, what state I was put in or what state I become in…and why I couldn’t move and why I couldn’t talk. Maybe that’ll be explained to me…it worries me to death sometime.

HICKSON: I don’t know. (He says the encounter happened around dusk and that the other time was probably incorrect.)

 

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE THE ROBOTS TO GET FROM THE CRAFT TO YOU?

 

HICKSON: (He has trouble answering this question, but finally says about half a minute or so, and agrees with me that this would be an unhurried pace.)

 

WHEN DID YOU GET BACK TO NORMAL AFTER THEY LET YOU OUT OF THE CRAFT?

 

HICKSON: When they brought me back outside, they just let me down to the ground, they didn’t throw me down. And of course I fell on the ground. I was real weak, my knees felt weak. I saw Calvin then, and he looked terrible, and I was trying to get where he was. My legs got strong enough I could get up, and I was getting toward him. I heard that hissing sound and I looked back and that thing was gone. I made my way on toward him, I was really concerned about him at that time. And I was trying to get him where I could talk to him, and it took us both a while before we could, you know, get to where we could kind of figure things out.

HICKSON: I’ll say again, you know, that before the end of the year, that everyone will be aware that we’re not alone, that a lot of things are going to be revealed to us, that there won’t be any doubt in anyone’s mind, and a lot of things are going to happen this year that’s going to seem strange at first to the people, till they begin to realize. And that’s about the only thing I’d like to say now. But I will be saying a lot before the year is over. END

Tourist records video of a UFO over South Carolina

A tourist visiting the North Myrtle Beach neighborhood of Cherry Grove in South Carolina saw a UFO on the night of Saturday, October 4.

Mick Rudi noticed the unusual light in the sky, and he grabbed his binoculars to better observe the UFO. He describes the bright round light as being “20 percent the size of the moon,” and he explains that the object hung motionless in the sky.

Perplexed by what he was observing, Rudi grabbed his camera to record video of the strange UFO over South Carolina.

Although Rudi was a visitor to the area, he is no stranger to Cherry Grove, as he has reportedly vacationed there since he was a baby. “You always see lights out there, there are boats and airplanes flying around, but this was nothing of that,” he explains. “The light itself did not illuminate the surface of the ocean which if it was some kind of a flare, it would have done that.”

WPDE NewsChannel 15 took Rudi’s UFO video to aviation expert Jeremy Bass to get his opinion of the unidentified aerial light. “That looked very much like a military jet training and the different color variations appear to be just different heat signatures, as the pilot was asking for different performance levels out of the engine,” Bass opined. And, although Rudi describes that the UFO “gradually got smaller and smaller and disappeared over the horizon, Bass suggests that the object in the video isn’t “actually disappearing, it’s just that that aircraft has now turned and is flying toward the viewer and they’re so far away you don’t see navigation lights.”

Bass even alleges that he has seen the same thing hundreds of times, and that “It’s not even questionable. You’re looking at a jet out there flying around that they’re so far away, it appears that it’s doing things that it’s not.” WPDE NewsChannel 15 reportedly spoke with another aviation expert who echoes Bass’s strong opinion that the object in Rudi’s video is “definitely military.”

But, according to WPDE NewsChannel 15, Rudi isn’t buying the military jet explanation. He believes what he observed was other-worldly.

South Carolina’s Myrtle Beach area has been a hot bed of UFO activity in recent years. But, although there have been several photos and videos captured showing unexplainable objects over the area, tourist beaches like this also see their fair share of sky lanterns. These mini hot air balloons, also known as Chinese lanterns, could potentially be what Rudi observed. The color changes noted by Bass could actually be nothing more than an illusion created by the camera as it attempts to focus on the bright object. And Rudi’s description of the object getting smaller and disappearing could be explained by a sky lantern’s fuel cell expiring.

But the sky lantern identification is just one of many possibilities. It seems hasty for two aviation experts to definitively identify an object as a military aircraft based on a video that shows an out-of-focus light in the sky, recorded with a shaky, hand-held camera.

Iceland Sea Monster Confirmed Real

Sterrenkunde De ruimtesonde Solar Dynamics Observatory van NASA heeft prachtige beelden gemaakt van een materiebrug in de atmosfeer van de zon. Dat is een heldere wolk van zonnegas, die zich boven het oppervlak van de zon uitstrekt.

De sonde, die de zon vijf jaar lang 24 uur op 24 in de gaten houdt, hield de materiebrug eind september enkele dagen in het vizier terwijl hij met de zon mee roteerde. De slangachtige brug is 1,6 miljoen kilometer lang. Mocht ze recht zijn, zou ze bijna volledig rond de zon reiken.  

"Materiebruggen blijven in de atmosfeer van de zon hangen door sterke magnetische krachten", laat NASA in een verklaring weten. "Hoewel ze zeer onstabiel zijn, kunnen ze dagen of zelfs weken stand houden."

Volgens de Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie fotografeerde de SDO de materiebrug in verschillende lichtgolflengtes. Elk beeld licht materiaal van verschillende temperaturen uit. Op deze manier komen wetenschappers meer te weten over het ontstaan van een dergelijke structuur.

De SDO legde vorige week ook een middelgrote zonnevlam op beeld vast, die donderdagmiddag op zijn hoogtepunt was.

In winterslaap van 180 dagen naar Mars: "Je slaapt, wordt wakker en je bent er" - HLN.be

NASA bekijkt al sinds de jaren 50 van vorige eeuw de mogelijkheid van een bemande ruimtevlucht naar Mars, maar tot vandaag heeft nog nooit een mens een voet op de Rode Planeet gezet. De Amerikaanse ruimtevaartorganisatie heeft nu door SpaceWorks laten onderzoeken of zo'n peperdure expeditie niet veel goedkoper kan. Zo zou de bemanning kunstmatig in een 'winterslaap' kunnen gehouden worden tijdens de vlucht van ongeveer 180 dagen. Daarmee zou 180 ton aan gewicht kunnen uitgespaard worden. En dus ook veel geld.

De diepe slaap, ook gekend als torpor, vermindert de metabolische functies aanzienlijk. Torpor komt in de natuur voor bij sommige zoogdieren en vogels en bij de mens in het geval van onderkoeling. "De medische winterslaap bestaat al sinds 1980 maar wordt vooral sinds 2003 gebruikt bij kritieke traumapatiënten in ziekenhuizen", zei ruimtevaartingenieur Mark Schaffer van SpaceWorks op het International Astronomical Congress in Toronto. "In de meeste grote ziekenhuizen bestaan er procedures om medische onderkoeling toe te passen op patiënten om hen in leven te houden tot ze de behandeling aankunnen die ze nodig hebben."  

Van 1 week naar half jaar onderkoeling
In combinatie met intraveneuze voeding zou de bemanning van een Marsvlucht in winterslaap kunnen worden gebracht. Zo'n tripje duurt wel in het beste geval 180 dagen, enkele rit. Tot nu toe worden patiënten maximaal ongeveer een goede week in stase gehouden. Voor bemande Marsvluchten zouden artsen dat dus moeten opdrijven tot 180 dagen". Om de torporstaat te bereiken moet de lichaamstemperatuur naar omlaag gebracht worden tot 34 à 32 graden. Dat duurt ongeveer zes uur.  

En als men erin slaagt die staat bijna een half jaar aan te houden, zou dat alvast een geweldige financiële besparing betekenen voor een bemande vlucht naar de Rode Planeet. De astronauten zouden immers veel kleinere ruimtetuigen nodig hebben met een pak minder voorzieningen. Geen keuken, geen fitnesstoestellen, geen grote woonruimtes, en minder water, eten en kledij. SpaceWorks berekende dat in totaal de basisvereisten voor zo'n torporvlucht van 400 naar ongeveer 220 ton zouden zakken.  

Psychologisch voordeel
Een van de ontwerpen omvat overigens een tollende leefruimte met een lichte zwaartekracht om het bot- en spierverlies op te vangen.   Als alternatief om de hele bemanning te laten inslapen zou ook telkens 1 persoon twee-drie dagen wakker gehouden kunnen worden en die vervolgens veertien dagen in winterslaap te brengen. Zo is er altijd iemand die het ruimteschip kan besturen en wetenschappelijke experimenten kan uitvoeren.  

Tot slot is er ook nog een psychologisch voordeel aan de winterslaap voor ruimtevaarders. "Je zit niet 180 dagen vast in een blik maar je gaat slapen, wordt wakker en je bent er", zei Schaffer.   Het is allemaal nog zo ver niet maar de voorlopige resultaten zijn volgens Schaffer alvast veelbelovend.

The Giants Of Tenerife Left Over From Atlantis

As I mentioned yesterday I have just returned from Tenerife, one of the Canary Islands.

Plato described a rich and happy land in the Atlantic which was virtually destroyed by earthquakes and tidal waves some 12,000 years ago. This was Atlantis and many locals are convinced that the Canary Islands are what remains of the submerged paradise.

But whatever the truth of the legends and stories about Atlantis the Acantilados de Los Gigantes are a wonderful sight - providing you don't mind lots of hills and steps!

We walked a different way back to our hotel sticking to the coast via Puerto Santiago and Puerto Pisquero.
