Flight passengers stunned as 'mystery lights' seen near UFO hot spot Area 51
Flight passengers stunned as 'mystery lights' seen near UFO hot spot Area 51
PASSENGERS flying over the Area 51 military base in Nevada were left stunned after seeing flashing lights piercing through the clouds in mysterious footage of the alien conspiracy hotspot posted on YouTube.
Saw this 30 minutes before we landed. My guess was we were near Area 51.
UFO witness
Many conspiracy theorists believe it is where the Government hides away evidence of alien visitations.
Many more sceptical people believe Area 51 is so top-secret, because it is where the USAF designed and tests experimental new spy planes and air craft.
However, the US Government did not even admit the base existed until 2013, in a series of documents released as part of a Freedom of Information request, and it is heavily protected by armed guards.
The woman said in the video: “Saw this 30 minutes before we landed. My guess was we were near Area 51.
“The lights grabbed the attention of everyone onboard. It was fairly cloudy and these lights would pierce the clouds even when we were in them deeply.
She also said in the video: "I figured a reflection from solar panels at first."
There is a solar panel plant near Area 51, and reflections from the panel snapped from the sky, have previously triggered reports of UFOs.
The Crescent Dunes Solar Energy Project is a 110 megawatt (MW) net solar thermal power project located near Tonopah, about 190 miles northwest of Las Vegas.
Scott Brando is a UFO debunker who runs website Ufoofinterest.org.
He tweeted: "Strange lights #UFO spotted above #Area51? There's a possible explanation: a solar farm with reflections from individual panels."
Let’s face it. Ever since artificial intelligence was first dreamed up, humans have been afraid of the day that our AI overlords take over. But some researchers have been testing the ability of artificial intelligence to not just compete with humanity, but also to collaborate.
In a study published on Thursday in Nature Communications a team of BYU computer science professors, Jacob Crandall and Michael Goodrich, along with colleagues at MIT and other universities, created an algorithm to teach machines cooperation and compromise.
The researchers programmed the machines with an algorithm called S# and ran them through a number of games with different partners — machine-machine, human-machine, and human-human — to test which pairing would result in the most compromises. Machines (or at least the ones programmed with S#), it turns out, are much better at compromise than humans.
But this might say more about “human failings”, lead researcher Jacob Crandall tells Inverse. “Our human participants had a tendency to be disloyal — they would defect in the midst of a cooperative relationship— and dishonest — about half of our participants chose to not follow through on their proposals — at some point in the interaction.”
I look like I'm trustworthy, don't I?
Machines that had been programmed to value honesty, on the other, were honest. “This particular algorithm is learning that moral characteristics are good. It’s programmed to not lie, and it also learns to maintain cooperation once it emerges,” says Crandall.
Additionally, the research found that certain cooperation strategies were more effective than others. One of these was “cheap talk”, simple verbal signals that respond to a given situation, like “Sweet. We are getting rich!” or “I accept your last proposal.” or, to express displeasure, “Curse you!” “You will pay for that!” or even “In your face!”
Regardless of what type of game was being played or who was playing, cheap talk doubled the amount of cooperation. It also humanized the machines, with human players often unable to tell if they were interacting with a machine or human.
Because the focus of this research was on the testing the S# algorithm, one shortcoming of the research is that it does not take into account cultural differences among humans that might affect how different human populations might use or interpret strategies like cheap talk, or how much human players might engage in deception or disloyalty.
Presciently, in the final short story of Isaac Asimov’s famous book 1950 book I, Robot — “The Evitable Conflict” — AI overlords do in fact, take over the planet. But, because they’re so reasonable, and programmed with some unbreakable ethical rules, it’s a good thing for the human race. And, as this study shows, because human interactions are messy and complicated, maybe, we can trust machines. Assuming of course, if they have been programmed for honesty.
Abstract:
Since Alan Turing envisioned artificial intelligence, technical progress has often been measured by the ability to defeat humans in zero-sum encounters (e.g., Chess, Poker, or Go). Less attention has been given to scenarios in which human–machine cooperation is beneficial but non-trivial, such as scenarios in which human and machine preferences are neither fully aligned nor fully in conflict. Cooperation does not require sheer computational power, but instead is facilitated by intuition, cultural norms, emotions, signals, and pre-evolved dispositions. Here, we develop an algorithm that combines a state-of-the-art reinforcement-learning algorithm with mechanisms for signaling. We show that this algorithm can cooperate with people and other algorithms at levels that rival human cooperation in a variety of two-player repeated stochastic games. These results indicate that general human–machine cooperation is achievable using a non-trivial, but ultimately simple, set of algorithmic mechanisms.
'Unusual Circumstances' Delay Pentagon UFO Program FOIAs
'Unusual Circumstances' Delay Pentagon UFO Program FOIAs
The Defense Intelligence Agency has begun responding to FOIA requests regarding the explosive Pentagon UFO revelations from this past December.
As one can imagine, the bombshell New York Times article and subsequent media fallout spawned incredible interest from the UFO community.
Almost as soon as the news hit, a number of diligent researchers quickly went to work filing FOIA requests to find out more about this newly-revealed and tantalizing twist in the tale of UFOs.
Among them was Jack Brewer of the blog UFO Trail, who published his recently-received response from the DIA over the weekend.
In what appears to be a form letter, the department tells Brewer that they cannot produce the information he requested within the required 20 days due to, in their words, "unusual circumstances."
Among the possible issues which may warrant that designation, they explain, are that the files could be housed at a geographically distant location or the amount of material may be too massive to produce immediately.
The third reason cited by the agency and perhaps the most worrisome is that the request might require them to consult with "one or more other agencies" that would likely have a say in what gets released.
Their response closes by telling Brewer that his submission will be processed in the order it was received and that their current workload is "in excess of 1,139 requests."
While it bears noting that this voluminous number of FOIA cases are for the DIA, in general, and not specifically pertaining to the AATIPS, it seems reasonable to conclude that the agency has received quite a few requests about the program since the news broke last month.
And, considering the glacial pace with which such requests are handled, it stands to reason that it will be at least a year, if not more, before Brewer's paperwork winds up on the desk of someone who can do something about it.
It surrounds us through comprising extra than 2/3 of the Earth’s surface place. 70% of our frame weight is from the water. The simplicity of its effortlessly diagnosed symbol H2O, signifying its composition of two hydrogens and one oxygen atom, understates its essential importance to all existence on our planet. Yet it is believed that lots of Earth’s water had extraterrestrial origins; having traveled here via manner of comets and other celestial bodies. Regardless of its source, our planet would be barren without it. Being a primary building block of lifestyles, water is second most effective to our air in sustaining all living things, each animal, and vegetable
The portability of water has made it a common partner to walkers, joggers and thirsty human beings anywhere. We have grown to be conversant in carrying individual water bottles anywhere in recent times, to the factor wherein they have got almost changed the once ubiquitous water fountain or cooler; previously the gathering location for spreading workplace scuttlebutt. They are consumed on the price of 1500 according to 2nd in the U.S. In a try and quench our seemingly insatiable thirst. The reason for this is clean; our bodies crave it.
Water facts
You have probably been advised to drink a mean of eight 8 ounce glasses each and regular. This serves as a guideline and consumption should range in step with your degree of bodily interest and different elements. Of path no longer all our water is ate up in its purified shape, the average American drinks greater than six hundred bottled and canned beverages (frequently carbonated and sweetened tender liquids) every yr. While they will be nice in moderation, they may be no longer a great alternative for the real issue, sorry Coke.
So why is it so vital to us? Well, we could not continue to exist without it for a range of days. When we do not get enough we suffer from dehydration. But that doesn’t give an explanation for why it’s so crucial to the proper functioning of our bodies.
Well, water has numerous specific characteristics. Its capability to dissolve many substances has made it referred to as the normal solvent. In addition to other houses, this helps to cleanse the frame. Osmosis, a method accountable a plant’s roots ability to take in water from the soil, is defined as the movement of a solvent via a semi-permeable membrane. The cellular walls of the human frame are just such a membrane. Osmosis is regulated by using mechanisms within the body to keep the awareness of materials within the mobile at a balanced degree; do away with the water and the cell will soon die.
Water is contained in the lymphatic device which presents our immunity to the invasions of our bodies with the aid of toxins and overseas bodies. When we excrete water it removes a number of those overseas substances and pollutants, helping to keep the general health of the body. Just like the elimination of garbage maintains our environmental health, the frame has its very own device to eliminate its refuse. Water is a big part of that technique.
Other exciting traits of water are brotherly love and adhesion. Cohesion is created with the aid of the attraction of the water molecules because of the hydrogen bonds. When combined with adhesion the resulting capillary movement permits a plant to defy gravity and draw water up during its entire stem, accordingly nourishing each mobile of the plant shape.
Electromagnetic houses additionally play a function inside the features water plays in this captivating procedure. Substances called electrolytes serve to regulate the body’s many inner systems. Among those are sodium, potassium, chloride, and bicarbonate. The amount of water in our bodies is regulated by sodium, which is also vital for the technology of electrical indicators which are the method of communique for our mind and apprehensive system. Potassium regulates heartbeat and muscle function.
More exact facts can be discovered on numerous internet websites so as to offer the reader with a more appreciation for the brilliant structure that is the human body. MedicineNet.Com and eMedicineHealth.Com have supplied a number of the real statistics for this article and will serve as a place to begin your studies.
Our body also makes use of water to cool itself. When we perspire the sweat glands underneath our pores and skin excrete water bringing it to the floor. As the water evaporates it draws warmth from the frame. Without this device of cooling we’d be not able keep a secure frame temperature. Normal frame temperature varies within a narrow variety at some stage in the day, with the common body temperature being about ninety eight.6 stages.
One of the notable things about consuming water is not having to worry about calories; there aren’t any. This might not consist of a number of the new water merchandise being marketed in recent times, you would better take a look at the label. Some of those new merchandise even tout health benefits, claiming to incorporate nutrients and different essential nutrients. Be skeptical and seek advice from your health practitioner or different healthcare professional before allotting the more money for those merchandise. You’ll discover that maximum of the claims made, even though inside Federal recommendations, may be completely meaningless.
Maintaining the deliver of secure easy water is important to the continuing life of all living things. Though we’ve enjoyed a reasonably excessive general of water excellent inside the U.S. There are locations where sources have become too polluted for human consumption. Since 1948 Congress has declared it in the “country wide interest” to guarantee the high first-class of water all through the United States. Through The Clean Water Act of 1972, which remains one of the most debatable laws ever enacted, Congress created and empowered the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to alter the release of pollution into U.S. Waterways.
We have to all continue to be vigilant in protecting our water supply by way of getting to know how and in which to remove contaminants. And file any suspicious dumping of substances into lakes and streams. The task is just too important to depart as much as a central authority forms. And the next time you are feeling thirsty, attain for a tall, cool glass of the satisfactory liquid refreshment on this planet. Water: It’s what your frame wants!

It won’t be new news that what you can’t see for your ingesting water can harm you. But are you aware of the volume of the risks? Depending on where you live, different contaminants have an effect on the water excellent that during turn impacts your family’s health. Water quality requirements are sadly no longer assured by way of federal or kingdom organizations which are charged with overseeing them.
Drinking water filters, as well as whole residence water filtration, is no doubt your great guess for a preserving a healthy family. Bottled water isn’t an awesome alternative because of the rate as well as the pollution troubles resulting from the bottles. And you don’t have any concept where that water got here from. Often it comes right out of municipal water structures…Much like your faucet water!
If you live in a rural area with a properly, the dangers posed by way of agricultural runoff include micro organism from animal manure, heavy metals and chemical substances contained in fertilizers and insecticides. Even in suburban areas, many nicely proprietors face these same issues because of garden care and other gardening products that run off whilst it rains.
For people who stay in urban regions, commercial pollutants has lengthy been set up as a health problem. A high percent of the contaminants from industries which get into the water deliver are not even regulated. Chemicals and heavy metals frequently end up in your ingesting glass after which into your body. These contaminants are popping out of smoke stacks and being dumped as waste into streams and lakes.
A more recently disclosed threat of urban consuming water comes from pills which have been dumped down toilets and drains and found their manner into your kitchen sink. Even greater alarming, in step with an Associated Press investigation, principal drug makers in the U.S. Have legally launched as a minimum 271 million prescription drugs into waterways that provide consuming water to residents.
A huge range of medication encompass mood stabilizers (often containing lithium), antibiotics, intercourse hormones and anti-convulsants. Even even though this drug dumping poses a splendid danger, even extra of the contamination comes from the humans who eat them. The frame will excrete pills that are not absorbed, and unused pills get flushed. Opened boxes cannot be used in hospitals and nursing houses, and the last unused drugs also get flushed and emerge as within the water supply.
Consider the huge ranging cleansing merchandise that contain antibiotics. Hand soap, counter cleaner, lavatory cleaner and the list is going on and on. In addition to posing danger to ingesting water, we can be growing greater “tremendous insects” or bacteria that speedy adapt a resistance to the antibiotics, and motive life-threatening infections which can be from time to time not possible to triumph over.
Because authorities agencies are not stepping up in a well-timed way to cope with the concerns posed with the aid of environmental infection, it’s far as much as you to preserve your family safe. Fortunately this is feasible and requires distinctly little fee in assessment to the blessings you will gain. Water best checking out is the vital first step. Home water filtration systems are the second one step.
Based on what your water checking out effects display approximately the contaminants popping out of your faucets, you can find a wide variety of water clear out structures to easy your water supply. It might be a sort of charcoal filter out or even an entire house osmosis gadget that fits your needs. Whichever type you choose, you can be confident that your fitness is guarded from invisible chemical substances and bacteria that may be for your water.
Olivia Thoroughgood writes about the most critical investment of your lifestyles, your private home. She invites you to find out extra about the connection of clean water and your health. You can benefit from smooth water research and environmentally sound practices that help you, your family and the earth too.
Mindbending White And Green Balls Of Light Spotted Over Siberia Leaving Locals Terrified
Mindbending White And Green Balls Of Light Spotted Over Siberia Leaving Locals Terrified
Russia has been hit by a wave of reports of a giant UFO in the sky last night with spectacular pictures of an enormous glowing ball illuminating northern Siberia. Social media erupted with claims of 'aliens arriving' and locals in far flung parts of the country told of 'shivers down their spines'.
While the source of the light remains unclear, some have suggested that it was the the trace of a rocket launched by the Russian military that caused this extraordinary phenomenon in the night sky.Vasily Zubkov posted: 'I went out to smoke a cigarette and thought it was the end of the world.' The extraordinary scenes were captured by leading Siberian photographer Sergey Anisimov in the town of Salekhard which straddles the Arctic Circle. 'I was taken aback for a few minutes, not understanding what was happening,' he said.’ The glowing ball rose from behind the trees and moved in my direction. My first thought was about the most powerful searchlight, but the speed of changing everything around changed the idea of what was happening. The ball began to turn into an arc and gradually dissipated.' After the multi-coloured light show was over he went home to find local children as young as five in the yard babbling about 'aliens' and 'the portal to another dimension', he said. Some 520 miles further east, another photographer Alexey Yakovlev admitted to feeling scared as he witnessed the UFO spectacle at Strezhevoi, in the north of Tomsk region, reported The Siberian Times. 'At first I thought - it is such a radiance of such an unusual form, round in shape. But gradually the ball began to expand, it became clear that this is not some radiance and it became scary. It's good that I was not alone....a group of people cannot hallucinate.' On social media, Anastasia Boldyreva posted simply: 'Aliens arrived.
'The were many similar messages. Nurgazy Taabaldiev claimed: 'It's a gap in the space-time continuum.
While the source of the light has not been confirmed, not all are convinced it was a Russian rocket test. Some local experts suggest it may have been caused by the Northern lights. But the most common theory is that Russian strongman Vladimir Putin had chosen this moment to frighten the West with grandiose military exercises by his strategic nuclear forces. Putin personally oversaw the launch of four nuclear-capable ballistic missiles as part of a training exercise for Russia's strategic nuclear forces, the Kremlin said on Friday, the Interfax news agency reported. The test launches, conducted last night, involved land, air, and submarine-based ballistic missiles, Russia's defence ministry said in a separate statement. The ministry said a Topol intercontinental ballistic missile had been test fired from the Plesetsk cosmodrome in northern Russia, hitting a target at the Kura military testing range on the Kamchatka Peninsula thousands of kilometres (miles) away.
It was the likely the traces of one of these rockets - capable of carrying nuclear missiles - that caused this extraordinary phenomenon in the night sky, say the Russian media. As photographer Mr Yakovlev accurately guessed: 'It seems I accidentally shot the launch of a secret space rocket from Plesetsk'. Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Manual, told MailOnline: 'This looks amazing and it is not surprising the sight of it caused witnesses to think of aliens and the opening of a portal to another dimension.
'These fantastic possibilities are shot down by the prosaic explanation that this strange light phenomena was caused by the testing of an intercontinental missile. 'This seems like a poor explanation for something so spectacular but other rocket launches have caused similar spectacles. 'In particular, in December 2009 a stunning spiralling light was seen over Norway, which was caused by a failed Russian missile test. 'They may not be of an alien origin but we can certainly admire their beauty, even if they are caused by weapons of mass destruction.' A similar light was seen in the skies over Norway in December 2009, which was caused by a failed missile launch. Speaking to Barents Observer at the time, Dr Truls Lynne Hansen, a researcher at the Tromso Geophysical Observatory, said: 'The missile has probably come out of control and exploded.
'The peculiar spiral shaped light pattern comes from reflection of the sun in the leaking fuel.'
English 'alien hunters' are on high alert after footage has surfaced of a series of strangely blinking lights, flashing in a misty nighttime sky.
The unusual sighting is currently under investigation by the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) in the US.
The unidentified male witness claimed he and a co-worker saw the lights in the sky.
Are these lights the work of extraterrestrials?

"I went outside with my workmate to get some materials out of the van and noticed one light slowly move around the back of a building," he said in a witness statement.
“Then another one appeared from behind the building at a set distance that did not change.
“Seconds after another three appeared as if they was already there but were not lit up.”
The man who filmed the lights is convinced they were from a UFO.
Source: YouTube/Secureteam10
Footage taken by the eyewitness shows a series of lights slowly moving in the fog.
“At this point two lights where visible and after another minute or two, the two visible lights got further and further away," he said in his statement.
“One stopped and one seemed to carry on barely being a visible light source.”
He said they appeared to swing around again in formation.
“At this point we ran back inside the building to try and get a better view from the roof," he said.
However the thick fog prevented them from getting a better look.
“With the fog we could not see anything so ran back down at which point they where nowhere to be seen.”
The witness believes the lights cannot be accounted for, arguing the lights couldn't have been located on the ground.
"It couldn’t have been search lights shining up from the ground as we could clearly see the lights’ surface area getting wider as it shone down," he said, "meaning the light source was in the sky."
But sceptics have already weighed in to claim they're simply the lights of a crane.
Reading several comments from #YouTube, #Twitter & #Facebook about the alleged five #UFOs taken over #Basingstoke (@mufon case 89494), there are many people who disagree with the possible explanation (lights from a crane), forgetting misty conditions can cause misrepresentations
"About the five mystery lights filmed above #Basingstoke, I think could be lights from a tower/mobile crane," tweeted Scott Brando, a UFO debunker.
"There are many people who disagree with the possible explanation (lights from a crane), forgetting that misty conditions can cause misrepresentations."
Non-believers say the lights were just from a crane.

On January 21, 1968, in what came to be known as the Thule incident, a U.S. jet carrying 4 nuclear bombs crashed in Greenland, spreading radioactive wreckage across 3 square miles of a frozen fjord.
Fifty years ago, on January 21, 1968, the Cold War grew significantly colder. It was on this day that an American B-52G Stratofortress bomber, carrying four nuclear bombs, crashed onto the sea ice of Wolstenholme Fjord in the northwest corner of Greenland, one of the coldest places on Earth. Greenland is part of the Kingdom of Denmark, and the Danes were not pleased.
The bomber – call sign HOBO 28 – had crashed due to human error. One of the crew members had stuffed some seat cushions in front of a heating vent, and they subsequently caught fire. The smoke quickly became so thick that the crew needed to eject. Six of the 7 crew members parachuted out safely before the plane crashed onto the frozen fjord 7 miles west of Thule Air Base – America’s most northern military base, 700 miles north of the Arctic Circle.
The island of Greenland, situated about halfway between Washington D.C. and Moscow, has strategic importance to the American military – so much so that the United States had, in 1946, made an unsuccessful bid to buy it from Denmark. Nevertheless, Denmark, a strong ally of the United States, did allow the American military to operate an air base at Thule.
The crash severely strained the United States’ relationship with Denmark, since Denmark’s 1957 nuclear-free zone policyhad prohibited the presence of any nuclear weapons in Denmark or its territories. The Thule crash revealed that the United States had actually been routinely flying planes carrying nuclear bombs over Greenland, and one of those illicit flights had now resulted in the radioactive contamination of a fjord.
The radioactivity was released because the nuclear warheads had been compromised. The impact from the crash and the subsequent fire had broken open the weapons and released their radioactive contents, but luckily, there was no nuclear detonation.
To be specific, HOBO 28’s nuclear weapons were actually hydrogen bombs. As I explain in my book, “Strange Glow: The Story of Radiation,” a hydrogen bomb (or H-bomb) is a second-generation type of nuclear weapon that is much more powerful than the two atomic bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Those two bombs were “fission” bombs – bombs that get their energy from the splitting (fission) of very large atoms (such as uranium and plutonium) into smaller atoms.
In contrast, HOBO 28’s bombs were fusion bombs – bombs that get their energy from the union (fusion) of the very small nuclei of hydrogen atoms. Each of the four Mark 28 F1 hydrogen bombs that HOBO 28 carried were nearly 100 times more powerful than the bomb dropped on Hiroshima (1,400 kilotons versus 15 kilotons).
Fusion bombs release so much more energy than fission bombs that it’s hard to comprehend. For example, if a fission bomb like Hiroshima’s were dropped on the Capitol building in Washington, D.C., it’s likely that the White House (about 1.5 miles away) would suffer little direct damage. In contrast, if just one of the Mark 28 F1 hydrogen bombs were dropped on the Capitol building, it would destroy the White House as well as everything else in Washington, D.C. (a destructive radius of about 7.5 miles). It is for this reason that North Korea’s recent claim of achieving hydrogen bomb capabilities is so very worrisome.
After the crash, the United States and Denmark had very different ideas about how to deal with HOBO 28’s wreckage and radioactivity. The U.S. wanted to just let the bomber wreckage sink into the fjord and remain there, but Denmark wouldn’t allow that. Denmark wanted all the wreckage gathered up immediately and moved, along with all of the radioactively contaminated ice, to the United States. Since the fate of the Thule Air Base hung in the balance, the U.S. agreed to Denmark’s demands.
U.S. Air Force Strategic Air Command film report on the Crested Ice project.
The clock was ticking on the cleanup, code named operation “Crested Ice,” because, as winter turned into spring, the fjord would begin to melt and any remaining debris would sink 800 feet to the seafloor. Initial weather conditions were horrible, with temperatures as low as minus 75 degrees Fahrenheit, and wind speeds as high as 80 miles per hour. In addition, there was little sunlight, because the sun was not due to rise again over the Arctic horizon until mid-February.
Groups of American airmen, walking 50 abreast, swept the frozen fjord looking for all the pieces of wreckage – some as large as plane wings and some as small as flashlight batteries. Patches of ice with radioactive contamination were identified with Geiger counters and other types of radiation survey meters. All wreckage pieces were picked up, and ice showing any contamination was loaded into sealed tanks. Most every piece of the plane was accounted for except, most notably, a secondary stage cylinder of uranium and lithium deuteride – the nuclear fuel components of one of the bombs. It was not found on the ice and a sweep of the seafloor with a minisub also found nothing. Its current location remains a mystery.
Although the loss of the fuel cylinder was perplexing and disturbing, it is a relatively small item (about the size and shape of a beer keg) and it emits very little radioactivity detectable by radiation survey meters, making it very hard to find at the bottom of a fjord. Fortunately, it is not possible for this secondary “fusion” unit to detonate on its own without first being induced through detonation of the primary “fission” unit (plutonium). So there is no chance of a spontaneous nuclear explosion occurring in the fjord in the future, no matter how long it remains there.
The successful cleanup helped to heal United States-Denmark relations. But nearly 30 years later, the Thule incident spawned a new political controversy in Denmark. In 1995, a Danish review of internal government documents revealed that Danish Prime Minister H.C. Hansen had actually given the United States tacit approval to fly nuclear weapons into Thule. Thus, the Danish government had to share some complicity in the Thule incident.
As recently as 2003, environmental scientists from Denmark revisited the fjord to see if they could detect any residual radioactivity from the crash. Was bottom sediment, seawater or seaweed radioactive, after nearly 40 years? Yes, but the levels were extremely low.
Thule Air Base survived all of the controversies over the decades but became increasingly neglected as nuclear weaponry moved away from bomber-based weapon delivery and more toward land-based and submarine-based intercontinental ballistic missiles. Nevertheless, as Thule’s bomber role waned, its importance for radar detection of incoming ICBMs grew, since a trans-Artic trajectory is a direct route for Russian nuclear missiles targeted at the United States.
On January 5, 2018, a witness has caught a picture of an orb like UFO over Montgomery, Indiana. He claims he saw weird objects frequently. What it is?
Witness report:
“I see UFOs frequently in the northeast/eastern sky above the treeline, any time from late afternoon to late evening, and I have for a few years, increasingly so. They vary in size, shape, color, and behavior. During this particular sighting, my family and I had just arrived home from a family celebration. The family went inside, and as my husband entered the house, I told him, "Look, it's one of my UFOs!" He acknowledged and looked up, as he is very used to seeing them when I point them out, but does not enjoy watching them or pondering about it. The object was glowing/pulsating a yellow/orange light. It appeared slightly larger than the largest star in the sky. It seemed to stretch around the edges, as stars sometimes appear to do with atmospheric interference, but more so. The flight path was wobbly (up and down a bit) in a south/southeast direction. When I began watching it, it's behavior changed. It hovered above the treeline while I got a photo, mostly stationary, but with a bit of a circular movement. The sky was very very clear, with many stars visible, yet the object was the only light visible on camera. I filmed it for a few minutes, but got cold and decided to come inside. When I came in, I checked on the object through the back French doors, and when I looked at it, it began moving again in the south/southeast direction. I quit watching it then. I have become fairly used to seeing UFOs from about that far away. They don't stir me a bunch anymore. Only when they get closer do I become very concerned. I would report previous experiences, but I don't have dates available, nor any photos from these encounters.”
Since childhood, I’ve always been fascinated with the subject of cryptozoology. The term itself was coined by the late scientist Bernard Huevelmans, who offered it in reference to the search for biological organisms as-yet unrecognized by science, but which are nonetheless represented in various belief systems (often folk traditions among indigenous cultures, for instance).
While reports of things like “sea monsters” and mysterious “wild men” in the remote forests are often eye-grabbing, they also represent the most sensational kinds of stories offered in the broader discussion of cryptozoology. Because of this, over the years I’ve grown to be more careful in my approach to the subject, as with similarly “fringe” topics like unidentified flying objects, etc.
Of course, some stories about sea monsters or wild men might be capable of bearing fruit; however, most often this ends up being of the lowest-hanging variety. In other words, deep, explorative cultural and biological studies seldom form the basis for what is offered as evidence of these creatures. Instead, what makes its way into the pages of books is tantamount to modern folklore, borrowing from existing stories that are well known in the cryptozoological literature, or the incorporation of new ones that build onto an already well-worn mythos.
By contrast, if we really wanted to take time to examine the varieties of unknown species waiting to be discovered on this planet, we would need to look no further than limestone caves that flourish beneath states like Kentucky and Tennessee. By some estimates, there are as many as several hundreds of unexplored subterranean systems in this region of North America, each probably teeming with tiny–or even microscopic–new lifeforms. However, “microscopic” is much harder to sell, whether in books or on reality television shows.
The point I’m making here is that, as far as the search for undiscovered animals, there is plenty yet to be found, although the likelihood that many of those will be exceptionally large (let alone manlike) becomes increasingly rarer with every passing year, and the acquisition of new knowledge about our planet. We have scoured our world, and our oceans, in search of new organisms, and while many new discoveries do turn up on a frequent basis, we continue to see little vindication for the classic “monsters” that have haunted our imaginations since time immemorial.
At this point, I should offer a caveat since there are, from time to time, what I feel to be good cases that lend substance to the idea that one or two “mystery monsters” may be out there. One of my favorites takes us back to Halloween 1983, where a group of construction workers at Stinson Beach, California, observed what they described as being a “giant snake” swimming several meters off the coast for a period of several minutes. I had the opportunity to interview one of the primary witnesses, Marlene Martin, who adamantly maintained that the creature was large, dark colored, and by all observations resembled a massive aquatic snake (further details of this incident can be read about in my MU post from last year).
Of course, the Stinson Beach incident is a modern corollary for countless similar stories from earlier times; accounts of oceanic creatures of serpentine appearance have been a mainstay in America since its founding, with stories the likes of the Gloucester sea serpent of 1817, and an earlier series of sightings around Cape Ann, Massachusetts, that occurred as early as 1639.
North America is by no means the only region of the world with legends about large, mysterious creatures; nor are such reports confined to our oceans. Consider the fact that reports of primal creatures, which often are likened to being “wild men,” stem from a remarkably diverse collection of regions around the world. The following examples make reference to different varieties of cultural beliefs involving such creatures; the first comes to us from a 1978 Nature article titled, “Yeti or Wild Man in Siberia?” (Nature, 271:603, 1978):
Reports from Russia tell of a creature known locally as the “Chuchunaa” which is over 2 m tall, clad in deerskin, and unable to talk, although it does utter a piercing whistle. A man-eater, the Chuchunaa often steals food from settlements. Observers say that the creature has a protruding brow, long matted hair, a full beard, and walks with its hands hanging below its knees. Soviet scientists speculate that the Chuchunaa represents the last surviving remnant of the Siberian paleoasiatic aborigines that retreated to the upper reaches of the Yana and Indigirka rivers. The last reliable sightings were in the 1950s, and this animal may now be extinct.
The next, from China, denotes the creature known as Yeren in various parts of the country, as discussed in the New York Times article, ”It’s Tall, It Has Wavy Red Hair and Chinese Keep Hunting for It,” (NYT, p. 5, January 5, 1980). It reads:
“Spurred by reports of large (6 -feet tall) animals with wavy red hair walking on two legs, Chinese scientists have been combing the thick forests of Shennongjia, in Hubei Province. Many footprints 12-16 inches long as well as samples of hair and feces have been found. So far, though, no photos or specimens.”
The next instance is a most interesting excerpt, which appeared in 1982 in Myra Shackley’s “The Case for Neanderthal Survival: Fact, Fiction or Faction?” published in the journal Antiquity (56:31). It reads as follows:
All continents have their tales of wild men, abominable snowmen, sasquatch, etc. Most anthropologists give little credence to these stories. Shackley, however, has assembled considerable evidence for the reality of the so-called Almas (plural form: Almasti), primitive men who closely resemble Neanderthal Man, or at least what we think Neanderthal Man looked like. Abundant, internally consistent data come from an east-west band running from the Caucacus, across the Pamir Mountains, through the Altai Mountains, to Inner Mongolia. Even today, sightings of these creatures are rather common; and several scientists have seen them. One incident occurred in 1917, when the Reds were pursuing White Army forces through the Pamirs. The troops of Major General Mikail Stephanovitch Topilsky shot an Almas as he was emerging from a cave.
“The eyes were dark and the teeth were large and even and shaped like human teeth. The forehead was slanting and the eyebrows were very powerful. The protruding jawbones made the face resemble the Mongol type of face. The nose was very flat …the lower jaws were very massive”In some instances the Almasti have even associated with modern man; and cases of successful interbreeding have been reported. After reviewing the mountains of evidence, Shackley feels that the Almasti are very likely surviving Neanderthals, because the physical characteristics of the Almasti and reconstructed Neanderthals are basically identical. This long review article also discusses the many Chuchunaa sightings from northern Russia — perhaps another relict population of Neanderthals.
As can be seen from the preceding reports (and their publication dates), the notion that some small groups of “wild men” had remained undiscovered in remote areas of the world was once given at least some serious consideration. However, more recent genetic studies that have examined the scant physical evidence available leave us with far less to imagine: in every case, the genetic evidence points to bears, rather than mystery hominids, existing primally at the outermost skirts of the modern world.
How can we reconcile the richness of these cultural traditions from around the world, with the lacking physical evidence for the existence of such creatures? It is difficult to make sense of, on account of the demands of modern science, which require indisputable physical proof before any credible argument can proceed.
Yet eyewitness reports, anecdotal though they are, shouldn’t be ruled completely out of hand; especially those which contain what are, at times, a remarkable degree of detail. Arguably, my favorite from recent memory involves an observation made in the early 1990s by Russian scientist Arkady Tishkov, who watched a strange, upright-walking apelike creature in the Himalayan mountains for a period of two hours in September of 1991:
“About midday, on the top of a moraine ridge at a distance of about 400 feet (120 m), I noticed a human-like animal sitting by a boulder on the sunlit side. My position was lower on the slope, and at first I did not see the full silhouette. A little later, however, I observed the animal in full. It had the following characteristics: erect, bipedal posture; dark brown color; cone-shaped head; no visible neck; long forelimbs; and short and slightly flexed hind limbs. When first observed, the creature was squatting in what seemed an unnatural position for an animal, with its back touching the sun-warmed surface of the boulder.”
A lengthier presentation on the Tishkov encounter can be read here.
We could discuss reputable articles and reasonably constructed eyewitness reports all day, but ultimately there is no clear resolution here. Hence, many in the scientific community would feel most comfortable concluding that if so little evidence exists, then there are probably no such creatures. I have never felt that this is the most logical way to reconcile the two opposing elements to the ongoing cryptozoological mystery; still, at what point will the remarkable observations–many of which no doubt involve valid and real circumstances–be complemented by equally remarkable physical specimens, which will settle the debate once and for all?
Stories about cryptids truly are a cultural phenomenon, stemming from places all around the world. For my part, I do hold onto some hope that certain technological advancements of the coming years may help us settle the debate over the existence of some of these creatures. Whether small microbial lifeforms or larger beasts lurking beyond the regions known well to us in modern times, the field of cryptozoology does bear certain promise for the patient and persistent among us.
In a world that grows seemingly ever-smaller as science teaches us more, it is likely just a matter of time before the next big (or microscopic) discovery in the frontiers of biology.
THE PROFESSIONAL UFO SKEPTIC WHO BELIEVED IN ALIENS
THE PROFESSIONAL UFO SKEPTIC WHO BELIEVED IN ALIENS
'The Close Encounters Man’ tells the unlikely story of how the government’s astrophysicist debunker became the phenomenon’s most expert defender.
If you’re jonesing for an extraterrestrial, you should check outThe Close Encounters Manby Mark O’Connell. O’Connell, a writer for Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and founder of the UFO blog High Strangeness, set out to write “a UFO book people wouldn’t need to hide from other people.” He found his ideal subject in J. Allen Hynek, the astronomer hired by the United States Air Force in 1948 to debunk the reports of strange objects in the sky flooding in from across the country. Eventually Hynek broke with his handlers and became the first scientist to lend credence to the UFO phenomenon. The author of 1972’s The UFO Experience: A Scientific Study, he would go on to found the Center for UFO Studies in 1973, present a speech on flying saucers to the United Nations in 1978, and develop the “close encounter” scale that would inspire Steven Spielberg’s popular Close Encounters of the Third Kind (“a huge boon to his work,” O’Connell told me. “They shot a scene where the little aliens grab Hynek’s pipe from him and stick it up their noses, but it was cut down to a six-second cameo.”)
In telling the life story of Hynek, the “astro-beatnik,” O’Connell winds up with a stunning panorama of the UFO movement—from fringe conspiracy theorists to amateur astronomers to agnostic scientists—as well as its colossal impact on pop culture and modern science. I recently spoke with O’Connell over the phone about Hynek’s unique story of skeptic turned believer, the scientific study of the inexplicable, and what makes a good UFO witness.
VICE: What had to happen for a scientist as disciplined as Hynek to reach an epiphany and come around to a belief in flying saucers?
Mark O’Connell: It was a gradual process punctuated by traumatic moments. He had been involved in the Air Force’s first UFO study, Project Sign, where he simply looked over the collected UFO reports and classified as many as he could as misidentified astrological objects like comets or meteorological phenomena like strange clouds, or normal things like aircraft or weather balloons. At the end, there were about 20 percent of the cases left unsolved. He just put those aside, thinking with enough time and resources we could probably explain those away as well. So he filed the report, went back to teach at Ohio State and Wesleyan Universities.
What led to Hynek getting involved with UFOs again?
Three years later, the Air Force’s UFO studies were reinvigorated under a new commander who wanted to take a fresh look at things. When he discovered Hynek was still teaching about 90 miles up the road, he paid him a visit to hear more about the work he’d done. And Hynek was shocked to discover it hadn’t faded away. People were still seeing and reporting close encounters, and there remained a consistent 20 percent that couldn’t be explained. The numbers never changed, but his thinking changed.
How did Hynek’s thoughts on UFOs change?
Shortly after that he gave an address to the Optical Society of America in Boston in 1952. He said, “Look, this is something we need to study that could represent an entirely unknown realm of nature, and as scientists we ought to be curious enough to want to study it.” And that was earthshaking. But he often outraged the other side too, like in the infamous swamp gas case in Michigan of 1966. Over a hundred witnesses had seen floating lights in the nighttime, and it caused huge national furor, made headlines all over the country. So the Air Force sent Hynek in to investigate. After three days of intense investigations, Hynek—a guy who went where the facts lead him and nowhere else—concluded that these people had quite possibly seen swamp gas. Everyone in Michigan was deeply offended to be shown up nationally as crackpots. So Hynek said, “You know, I’m not going to carry water for the Air Force any more,” and went his own way and decided to begin conducting his own research. And, by the way, one of the things he said to the Optical Society was something that’s always stuck in my mind: “Ridicule is not part of the scientific method, and the American public should not be taught that it is.”
Where’s the line between a conspiracy theorist and a fact-based skeptic who becomes skeptical even of other skeptics?
I don’t think we’ve found that line and that was one of the frustrations of Hynek’s career. There was a brief period in the early 1980s when his Center for UFO Studies was really thriving. They had money coming in—they had a lot of support from the scientific establishment and were able to dedicate resources to investigating UFO cases. But over time they became less exciting to other UFO people. They were grabbing fewer headlines; financing fell apart; and the center wasn’t able to do nearly as much. So I think Hynek’s efforts to bring the phenomenon into the sunlight and devote scientific study to it never had the opportunity to fully blossom. His goal was to cross that line and bring those two sides together. He came close, but I think he never quite achieved it.
What were Hynek’s chief takeaways about the study of UFOs?
Hynek observed that a meteorologist can’t study a tornado in a lab, only the results. He thought the same thing about UFOs: You have to get a little creative when you’re researching something as off the wall as UFOs, which do seem to deliberately make it hard for us to understand them. I compare it to the “Confuse-a-Cat” sketch from Monty Python. We’re the confused cat, and we need to be shocked out of our stupor by something that seems to have little to do with our version of reality. And so many of us who write and think about UFOs have to reach for new frameworks to define the issue and then study it.
How has our relationship with UFOs changed in the present time as compared to Hynek’s heyday?
It’s changed quite a bit. One of the sad things about my book—and maybe this makes a case for writing a sequel—is that Hynek passed away in 1986, and it was exactly a year later that the entire UFO field went through a complete paradigm shift with the publication of Whitley Strieber’s Communion [which was later made into a movie starring Christopher Walken]. Strieber was already a successful horror writer at the time, right up there with Stephen King and Peter Straub. In Communion, he tells the true—according to him!—story of his alien abduction while he and his family were staying at their cottage in upstate New York. So all of a sudden, the alien encounter narrative was flipped on its head. Up to that point, close encounters, when they were reported, generally took place in isolated locales—a lonely country highway or a deserted farm out in the boonies where there would be very few people to see what was happening. Now, afterCommunion, the aliens are appearing in your bedroom at night, a scenario Budd Hopkins and several other researchers confirmed. Now whether that shift is conscious or whether it points to some change in how we see ourselves, who knows?
If on one side of the spectrum we have Carl Sagan and on the other, say, ErichVon Däniken, who theorized that ancient culture and religion was created by alien astronauts, where do we place Hynek?
I would put him maybe close to the center, but more on the Sagan side. They both had a lot of contempt for UFO charlatans. So yeah, he would definitely put himself far from the Von Däniken side, but he also would have thought Sagan was being closed-minded and intellectually dishonest to a degree.
What can ufology bring to modern science?
The ability to use imagination as part of the scientific process. We hear all the time from NASA how, just recently, we’ve discovered a planet that has five or six other planets in its orbit or how the Tabby Star dims in such a way as to suggest an alien megastructure. We have all these wild, seemingly impossible things that are now proving to be true. At the same time, we have people—and I’m not knocking them because I love and respect the work they do—like Neil deGrasse Tyson and Bill Nye the Science Guy, who’re crusading for scientific education, but will draw the curtain on UFO stuff because it “makes us look silly.” I think we need to get past that, because it doesn’t make you look silly, it makes you look like someone who is interested in learning more about the world around us and finding the borderline of science and studying the things that science could not explain. And I think that’s a pretty good approach for any scientist.
What makes for a good UFO eyewitness?
A keen sense of observation is key. A strong linguistic capability is very helpful because people who see UFOs are trying to describe something unheard of in human experience and need to be able to develop a new language. Too often you see people unable to describe what they’ve seen and experienced simply because there are no words for it, at least not yet.
I’ve been haunted by the fear that there is no vast conspiracy guiding the government, only stupidity and bungling. To what extent are you able to believe in the military’s ability to orchestrate certain cover-ups, as opposed to just lose things or mishandle data?
Hynek made a good distinction: “You can cover up knowing something or you can cover not knowing something.” I think government obfuscation is a big part of the story, but for many people that translates into “Oh, they’re hiding something from us.” One of the first important UFO writers, Donald Keyhoe, was provoked by the fact that nobody in the Air Force would return his calls. His reaction was, “Ah ha, they’re covering something up!” Well, no, they just didn’t want to talk to you.

A couple of days ago I reviewed here at Mysterious Universe the newly-revised edition of David Weatherly’s book, Black Eyed Children (you can find the review here). Of the various people who commented here at MU and at my Facebook page, one of them asked me what I think the Black Eyed Children really are. Well, I have to confess that I have no firm conclusion as to what they are or where they are from. It’s tough too to figure out their agendas. But, I will say that – as I see it, at least – there is a direct connection between the Black Eyed Children and the Men in Black. No, I’m not talking about the BEC being the offspring of the MIB – it’s much more complicated than that. What I can say is that there are certain threads which weave their ways through various accounts of both phenomena. Let’s take a look.
One of the most intriguing aspects of the Black Eyed Children phenomenon is that in just about every case on record when the BEC specifically turn up at peoples’ homes, they ask to be invited in. They’re hungry. They’re lost. They want to use the phone. They’re homeless and they need somewhere to sleep. Of course, this very much parallels the old legends and tales of blood-sucking vampires, who cannot cross the threshold until given permission to do so. As for the Men in Black, there are more than a few examples of them trying to find a way into the home without resorting to force. Both groups seem to have the ability to control or manipulate the human mind, to the extent that people find themselves inviting them in, even though they know they really shouldn’t.
The clothing is not too different, either. The MIB typically wear black suits and black fedora hats. The BEC wear black hoodies. The skin of the Men in Black is often described as looking like plastic. Their skin is wax-like, lacking lines and creases. Very much the same can be said for the Black Eyed Children. In some cases, the witnesses have described the faces of the MIB as doll-like. Or mannequin-like. Animals react to both – and not in a positive way. Fear is the general response.
Disturbingly, there are those cases where people fall sick – sometimes dangerously so – when confronted by the Men in Black and by their female counterparts, the Women in Black (see this link as a perfect example). In his Black Eyed Childrenbook, David Weatherly relates the accounts of a number of people who fell ill after encountering the BEC. Both the MIB and the BEC seem to have the ability to affect electrical equipment. Bad luck hovers ominously around those who have had the misfortune to cross paths with these black-garbed characters.
Odd, weird and menacing phone calls – often in the dead of night – have been reported in the wake of a visit from the BEC or the MIB. One of the issues that I have not seen too much attention given to is that of a worrying affect on short-term memory. But, such reports do exist. Of course, this may be a side-effect of the trauma and fear surrounding the encounter, since stress can affect memory. But, I have a few cases on record where people noted problems with recall for a period of up to several weeks after the encounter. The only connection between these people was the fact that they had been confronted by either the BEC or the MIB.
None of the above gives us any real insight into the true nature and origin of the Men in Black or the Black Eyed Children. But, what I would say is that there are enough similarities to make me conclude that we’re dealing with things that are part and parcel of each other.
In 1983, U.S. Army personnel stationed near Rendlesham in Suffolk saw a strange, metallic triangle

Did American airmen in Britain really see an eerie, triangular spacecraft – with lights looking like a ‘glowing red eye’ – landing near Suffolk in 1980?
The Rendlesham Forest incident is still making headlines today – decades after the News of the World reported it on the front page saying ‘UFO LANDS IN SUFFOLK’.
It’s been the subject of multiple films and documentaries, with a new TV series planned by Sony this year – and even today, the revelation (by one witness) of ‘missing hours’ during the incident, sent shockwaves around the world.
What’s unique about the incident, sometimes described as ‘Britain’s Roswell’, is the detailed accounts by serving military personnel.
A series of real-life reported UFO sightings in Britain near an air base used by the U.S. Air Force will be the basis of a new drama series, “Rendlesham.” London-based producer Eleventh Hour Film will make the series and Sony’s international TV production arm has come on board.
The events unfolded over two nights in December 1980, in Rendlesham Forest, near RAF Woodbridge, which at the time was used by the American Air Force.
Two American servicemen, John Burroughs and Jim Penniston, claimed to have seen strange lights like a ‘huge red eye’ in the woods in Rendlesham in Suffolk.
They approached the lights, initially thinking it was a downed aircraft, but Sergeant Penniston later described seeing a ‘craft of unknown origin’.
Retired Colonel Charles Halt made a dictaphone recording as the events unfolded, and has since claimed that RAF radar personnel also detected the craft – but were unwilling to give statements until they retired.

Halt claims to have written statements from RAF personnel saying that they too detected an unknown craft.
Halt told the BBC, ‘I have confirmation that (Bentwaters radar operators)… saw the object go across their 60 mile scope in two or three seconds, thousands of miles an hour, he came back across their scope again, stopped near the water tower, they watched it and observed it go into the forest where we were.
‘At Wattisham, they picked up what they called a ‘bogie’ and lost it near Rendlesham Forest.
‘Whatever was there was clearly under intelligent control.’
Colonel Charles Halt made a dictaphone recording at the time, saying: ‘While in Rendlesham Forest, our security team observed a light that looked like a large eye, red in colour, moving through the trees.
‘After a few minutes this object began dripping something that looked like molten metal.’ The soldiers made drawings and descriptions of craft which resemble classic ‘flying saucers’.
Sceptics claim that the marks of the UFO’s landing are, in fact, rabbit holes – and that the lights came from a nearby lighthouse, or from aircraft.
Rendlesham
Former Ministry of Defence UFO expert Nick Pope claims that an MOD investigation of the site showed radiation ‘significantly higher than the average background’ – as if a UFO had landed with ‘tripod’ landing gear.
Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual, said, ‘Even today ufologists squabble over what really happened at Rendlesham Forest in late December 1980. Did an alien spaceship land here?
‘Were the US airmen who saw the UFO fooled by the light from a nearby lighthouse? Was it a smokescreen to hide a nuclear incident or some other type of covert operation? Or was it a hoax?
Watson says that American authorities seem to have taken the incident seriously – giving servicemen medical payouts related to the incident.
‘Health problems and lots of other weird incidents have certainly been associated with Rendlesham. US airman John Burroughs, who said he saw the UFO on the night of Boxing Day 1980, received a medical payout from the US Veteran’s Association that confirmed he had received some physical harm from this craft.
‘Ever since the incident he has had heart problems and was fitted with a pacemaker. John and fellow witness Jim Penniston both claim to have suffered Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder after seeing the three-metre craft, covered in hieroglyphics land in the woods.’

Film director Daniel Simpson, director of The Rendlesham UFO Incident, said he investigated evidence including audio recordings.
He said, ‘It is my belief that the USAF did actually see something that is from another world or dimension.
‘Former witness Lt Col Charles Halt has gone on record to state this also.’
Simpson told Starburst Magazine, ‘It’s one of, if not the, biggest UFO incident ever recorded along with the Roswell case and it took place over 3 consecutive nights.
‘I think that the fascination in the case is amplified as a result of the witnesses being multiple USAF personnel, with the addition that one of those people was a Lieutenant Colonel who made an audio recording on a dictaphone as the events unfolded.’

‘I think that the fascination in the case is amplified as a result of the witnesses being multiple USAF personnel, with the addition that one of those people was a Lieutenant Colonel who made an audio recording on a dictaphone as the events unfolded.’
Check out the most bizarre creatures found in antarctica! This top list of rare and mysterious creatures discovered in the ice and the ocean is very strange!
10. Tardigrade
Tardigrades return from the dead
The tardigrade, also known as the water bear is nearly indestructible. Discovered in the late 1700s, this strange microscopic creature is an eight legged, clawed animal found around the world, even in the frozen tundra of Antarctica.
Cited as the most resilient creature that exists, this little micro-animal can survive everything from above boiling temperatures to even the cruel conditions of outer space. Intense pressure and radiation aren't even enough to take down this little guy. They can survive thanks to a host of interesting adaptations, including a protein that shields radiation damage to DNA. Even more fascinating is that researchers were able to transfer this protein to human cells and it was able to prevent x-ray damage to DNA by up to 40%!
The Tardigrade is able enter a state called Cryptobiosis in which metabolic processes stop. It is a state similar to death whenever conditions become too intense to overcome. This amazing creature feeds on plant and animal cell fluid as well as the fluid of some bacteria and is can be found in many patches of moss around the world.
9. “Hoff” Crab
Deep In Antarctic, The Hoff Crab 'Gardens' Bacteria With David Hasselhoff-Esque Hairy Chest
When it isn´t scuttling in slow-motion across the beach, the ´Hoff´crab finds its home deep in the thermal vents in between South America and Antarctica. It is named after famous Baywatch and Knight Rider star David Hasselhoff, due to the crabs unusually hairy chest. Despite being in one of the coldest locations on Earth, the ocean depths near Antarctica, the noble ´Hoff´crab has to endure scorching temperatures at over 300°C (570°F).
This is because the thermal vents that they call home are actually the product of undersea volcanos and they heat the ocean and release chemicals into the water that the crab has to endure. It does this because it is not the only creature to survive these conditions, the volcanic gases are a breeding ground for bacteria. The ´Hoff´will trap these bacteria within it´s hairy chest for a tasty treat. Though called the ´Hoff´crab these animals are actually a type of squat lobster and were only recently discovered but already seem to have the support of their namesake who tweeted several references to the hairy, antarctic creatures.
8. Elephant Seal
View Original Elephant Seal Image
The aptly named Elephant Seal braces the sub-zero antarctic conditions as the resident heavyweight. As one of the largest carnivores alive today, the elephant seal can weigh close to 9000 pounds! They are easily recognized as males have a trunk-like nose that is used for various calls. Often living in close proximity to penguin colonies, the elephant seal is a territorial animal and males often fight each other for the right to mate with females. Often this will lead males to go long periods of time without eating as they remain on their territory to protect it from others.
Known for being one of the seals species that spend the most time on land, the elephant seal can spend weeks without entering the water. Their huge bodies provide lots of blubber which can be used to keep warm and provide nourishment when food conditions are low. Though intimidating, they are still prey to the well coordinated orcas that patrol the Antarctic waters.
7. Sea Pig
Meet the Sea Pig, a Creature That Feasts on Sunken Corpses
The noble sea pig is a close relative of the sea cucumber. This little guy is pudgy and pink just like his land counterpart. The sea pig however is just a little smaller at under six inches long on average, but it makes up for it in numbers. In fact, sea pigs make up a majority of the weight on many ocean floors including many parts of Antarctica. Being one of the few creatures that can survive the intense pressure of the ocean above, the sea pig has a soft body with inflatable limbs that help it maneuver the sea bed.
These animals feed on leftover remnants of living creatures that have fallen into their home and hundreds will often gather around the husk of a dead whale that falls from above. Though they gather in large numbers they are not known to be social animals with each one simply sensing food along the ocean floor. Interestingly they will all face the same direction, though scientists are still unsure as to why.
6. SEA SPIDERS
Giant Sea Spider
At 1,300 species, some sea spiders (an arthropod from the order Pycnogonida) can grow up to 3 feet long in the cold waters of Antarctica! Sea spiders in the Pacific are a lot smaller and are not related to terrestrial spiders. They live in seafloor habitats and feed on coral, sponges, and worms.
5. Basket Star
Basket Star - Juvenile Gorgonocephalus eucnemis. Typical size: 1” diameter (with arms extended) ID: White with tan or brown markings. Branching arms.
This beautiful brittle star, Gorganocephalus, was filmed expanding its curly, branching arms out over about a minute. It was found with its arms intertwined with an octocoral. Posed here, it is able to filter feed on food floating by in the water above the seabed.
4. Chinstrap Penguins
Chinstrap Penguin Social Behavior
The Chinstrap Penguins are the most numerous penguins in the world. It is estimated there are 12 to 13 million located on the barren islands of the sub-Antarctic Regionand the Antarctic Peninsula. Chinstrap Penguins live and breed in large colonies. They often live on large icebergs on the open ocean.
3. Antartic Squid
Antarctic squid.
The colossal squid, sometimes called the Antarctic or giant cranch squid, is believed to be the largest squid species in terms of mass. It is the only known member of the genus Mesonychoteuthis.Wikipedia
Outside the breeding season, skuas take fish, offal, and carrion. Many are partial kleptoparasites, comprising up to 95% of the feeding methods of wintering birds, by chasing gulls, terns and other seabirds to steal their catches, regardless of the size of the species attacked (up to three times heavier than the attacking skua). The larger species, such as the great skua, also regularly kill and eat adult birds, such as puffins and gulls, and have been recorded as killing birds as large as a grey heron.[5] On the breeding grounds, the three, more slender northern breeding species commonly eat lemmings. Those species that breed in the southern oceans largely feed on fish that can be caught near their colonies. The eggs and young of other birds are an important food source for most skua species during the nesting season.[6]
In the southern oceans and Antarctica region, some skua species (especially the south polar skua) will readily scavenge the carcasses at breeding colonies of penguins and pinnipeds, sometimes taking live penguin chicks. In these areas, skuas seem to defer to the considerably larger giant petrels.
1. Artic comb Jelly
Chrysaora melanaster is a jellyfish found in the Arctic.
Jellies like this can be very abundant in Southern Ocean surface waters and it is widely suggested that they will be amongst the big winners in the more acidic, warmer ocean that results from high levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
Airplane Passenger captures strange object over California/Nevada
Airplane Passenger captures strange object over California/Nevada
A strange object has been captured by an airplane passenger during a flight from Seattle to Las Vegas on January 11, 2018.
The photographer states: I was taking scenery pictures (aircraft left) on the mostly clear, late afternoon, although there was intermittent cloud cover below.
Suddenly I briefly saw an object coming our way much closer than other aircraft. I thought it had to be an airplane coming too close, but I never saw what looked like an aircraft.
My camera was already at the window so I quickly got a few pictures without focusing as there was no time. It went by and over/behind us without any time to adjust my glasses to see it plus take pictures.
I was wondering, what did I just see? I wasn't sure if maybe the object in the sky had something to do with Nellis AFB, or something from Area 51, or was it just an airplane with an optical illusion.
There was no comment from the cockpit and I don't know if anyone else saw it. I'm not sure if we were traveling over California or Nevada. About 20 minutes later we were going over Mt. Charleston. We touched down in Las Vegas approximately 35 minutes after seeing the object and by that time it was dark.
Upon landing, the aircraft sounded like it was shaking completely apart. The passengers commented with concern. I have traveled hundreds of thousands of miles and I have never observed an object like that before. Mufon case 89658.

Top secret files reveal probe into UFO spotted near Blackpool’s Central Pier.
This 'UFO', taken close to Blackpool's Central Pier, was investigated by the military, but deemed to be a kite
MICHAEL HOLMES
Military top brass were called in to investigate pictures of UFOs taken by a holidaymaker in Blackpool.
But after looking for signs of ET, they dismissed the photographs as a close encounter of the BIRD kind.
This 'UFO', taken close to Blackpool's Central Pier, was investigated by the military, but deemed to be a seagull
Details of the sighting were released by the Ministry of Defence (MoD) after it declassified large swathes of its top secret dossier on UFOs.
The three snapshots were sent to the RAF’s Air Command unit by a tourist, who said: “I have recently downloaded some photos ... which upon closer inspection revealed some aircraft which I could not identify at the time [or] could hear or see.”
But after being scrutinised, internal documents revealed experts didn’t believe the ‘aircraft’ came from another world.
“Everyone who has seen them think that two of the photos look like stunt kites that have broken loose from their control strings, or perhaps we cannot quite see the attached strings in the photos,” an email from a wing commander, whose name was redacted, said.
This 'UFO', taken close to Blackpool's Central Pier, was investigated by the military, but deemed to be a kite
“That would explain the lack of noise reported by the photographer. The third looks like a seagull head on.”
But they added: “However, clearly without being there we can’t be definitive.
” The air force said no manaoeuvres were taking place in Blackpool at the time and date, 2.51pm on Friday, October 3, 2008, the pictures were taken close to Central Pier.
UFO expert Dr David Clarke previously told the BBC he didn’t believe the MoD’s files contained ‘any solid evidence we have been visited by intelligent life’. He said: “The vast majority of reports are ordinary things seen in extraordinary situations. So many things can be interpreted as unusual, you’ve got to eliminate all that noise and see what’s left.
” The 'UFOs' were later deemed to be a kite and seagull (Picture: Morgan Byrne)
He continued: “There are many good examples of puzzling things, for example seen on radar by the military, that need investigating.”
Boeing's Hypersonic Plane Design Travels at 5 Times the Speed of Sound
Boeing's Hypersonic Plane Design Travels at 5 Times the Speed of Sound
Matthew Loffhagen
Boeing
The world is about to get a lot smaller, as a major aerospace company makes a move towards creating superfast air travel.
Boeing's "Son of Blackbird", designed as a successor to the SR-71-Blackbird, isn't a reality just yet, but early concept designs for the plane suggest that it could reach speeds of up to Mach Five, or 3,836 miles per hour. To put this into context, the original Blackbird is capable of 2,200 mph, while the average commercial jet will only make it to around 560 mph.
Flying at Mach Five isn't a big deal - plane prototypes have managed it before. The big challenge is actually getting a plane up to that speed, and then decelerating afterwards so that it can land safely. In the words of Boeing's chief scientist for hypersonics, Kevin Bowcutt, who said the following to Aviation Week:
"It’s a really hard problem to develop an aircraft that takes off and accelerates through Mach 1 all the way to Mach 5 and beyond."
A previous test saw a plane prototype achieve Mach 5.1 for a period of a few minutes, but it only achieved this speed by being launched, like a giant rocket, out of another aircraft. Even then, the prototype quickly ran out of fuel and crashed into the ocean, suggesting that this may not be the safest way to travel just yet.
Even so, Boeing seems keen to take their initial concept design and turn it into something a little more concrete, and given the company's track record for very quickly turning design briefs into prototypes, it's worth assuming that they'll manage this sooner, rather than later.
As with other ongoing Boeing endeavors, there's an element of pressure to getting aircraft up to reliably hypersonic speeds - plenty of other companies, and even NASA, are also working on improving planes so that they're able to fly faster, thanks to developments in nanotube technology and other new ways of speeding things up while aircraft are in the sky.
While the Son of Blackbird is intended as a military plane, it's worth assuming that before long, much of this new technology will also filter down into Boeing's other creations. Ideally, we'll see hypersonic planes becoming the norm for civilian passenger flights and cargo shipments, meaning that getting from one side of the world to the other could become a lot easier and quicker.
Hopefully, this will mean that we'll all be able to travel the globe (and beyond) with greater speed, and it'll be a lot less time consuming to ship items from one country to another. While this new technology will probably be incredibly expensive at first, eventually it'll make sense for airlines to offer competitive prices for customers, as faster speeds become the norm, rather than the exception, in air travel.
We're still no closer to solid teleportation, but if a four hour flight can become just an hour or two in the air, everybody wins - so long as these changes in air travel are also offset by better fuel solutions that are less harmful for the environment. The carbon footprint for airplanes is bad enough as it is.
If you've always wanted to visit a distant part of the world, but you don't want to have to sit on a plane for a full eighteen hours, it might be worth keeping an eye on what Boeing is up to.
Mysterious booms shaking houses… Strange sounds in the sky… What the heck in going on in our sky in underground?
Strange Trumpet Sounds from Sky in Texas on January 8, 2018
Strange sounds from the sky. U.K on January 15, 2018
Strange Sounds in the sky of Regina, Canada on January 2, 2018
A mystery loud boom shocked and panicked residents after a suspected thunder storm roared through Merseyside, UK on January 15, 2018. Although the sound was heard around Merseyside, most reports centred around the Wallasey area. A resident reports: ‘All of my neighbours were out of their houses trying to figure out what it was. They thought there had been an explosion.‘
There have been multiple reports of a loud “boom” and the ground shaking in the Midland Valley area of Aiken County in South Carolina on January 8, 2018… But no earthquakes were reported on the USGS website.
mystery booms around the world in January 2018
Out of nowhere, just this pow. Just this huge explosion… A mysterious “boom” rattled North Oak Cliff, North Texas on January 11, 2018 and residents have no idea what exactly it was or what it could mean. The explosive noise was heard around 8:34 p.m.. Some reported seeing a flash first, then the loud noise.
Residents of Fannin and Gilmer counties in Georgia were trying to find the source of what is being described as a loud explosion. The boom that took place had enough force that some residents were reporting their homes shaking from the blast.
Strange Sounds in the sky in January 2018
A mystery boom shook houses in Pewamo, Michigan on January 1, 2018 at about 4 p.m. Reports came from all over northeast Ionia County from Carson City, down to Westphalia, Lyons, Muir. So far, there are no definitive answers as to what caused it. Speculation ranged from someone playing with dynamite to an earthquake to an attack by North Korea. Another explanation could be that the sound came from a frost quake.
In the YouTube clip, the camera follows the objects as they shoot along together, before zooming in on to one of them for a close up view.
Jeffrey Boyd Jr, who posted the video, entitled the startling clip "NASA sat two UFOs! Close ups, Wtf is this?"
In a blurb for the video he said: "NASA sat feed catches two objects, UFOs? "Cruising from North Pole! Closeup! Great resolution, very clear. Has windows? What is this?"
Some YouTube viewers were stunned.
One posted yesterday: "If this is legit, it's the best footage out there so far. Impressive."
YouTube
HIGH DEF: The cubes were described as the 'best UFO footage' ever.

Another said: "Wow, just wow."
Beyond The Strange YouTube channel was also in awe.
A message posted on the site read: "If you have any doubts about UFO's watch this NASA footage of two Unidentified Flying Objects on the screen, in Hi-Def!
One poster was so amazed, he said it had to be fake.
He said: "I can tell you right now that's fake... anyone can tell."
However, before people start thinking it is proof of the infamous "cube UFO over Texas," the truth of the matter can be revealed.
Many suspected UFO sightings have legitimate explanations such as blurred birds, balloons, out of focus planets, lens flares, or as in this case satellites.

This 'cube UFO' said to have been filmed over El Paso, Texas, was exposed as a fake.
Scott Brando is a UFO debunker who runs website ufoofinterest.org.
He recognised the objects as two satellites from the NASA GRACE mission (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment), which were sent into orbitto monitor climate change.
He also found the original NASA video that the clip was recorded from confirming what they were.
With the hashtags hoax and fake news, Mr Brando tweeted: "This video shared on #YouTube is easily explained: those objects are twins satellites from #NASA GRACE mission (Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment)."
Updated | Conspiracy site UFO Sightings Daily has already been quite busy in 2018, announcing that recent NASA photos of the surface of Mars have provided evidence of seashells along with numerous alien structures and statues including an Egyptian sphinx. Since a number of tabloids and conspiracy-friendly destinations around the internet have gleefully begun spreading the good word, let's take a moment to set the scientific record straight.
"I found evidence of an ancient ocean today," wrote Scott C. Waring, UFO Sightings Daily's proprietor, before describing the physical attributes of the purported seashells. "This is not the first time a seashell has been found on Mars, but closer to being the 15th time. Just go to google, and search Seashell on Mars. It will surprise you."
This is the point at which you may imagine a narrator voiceover telling you, in a grave voice, that it will not surprise you. A current Google search for such seashells shows (aside from the recent flurry of news spawned by Waring's new announcement) that people have indeed been claiming to see them on Mars for some time.
The most concise explanation for this is that Mars is a giant rock, on the surface of which sits a high volume of tiny rocks; so way more than 15 of them are likely going to look sort of like seashells. Last year, after U.S. Representative Dana Rohrabacher, a Republican from California, asked members of a NASA panel to comment on whether there were ancient civilizations on Mars's surface, NASA project scientist Ken Farley diplomatically stated that there was no such evidence, and that its existence would be "extremely unlikely."
There is indeed evidence of an ancient ocean on Mars, but Waring was not the one who found it. NASA scientists announced in 2015 that a liquid ocean had once covered nearly one-fifth of the Red Planet's northern hemisphere—meaning it contained more water than the Earth's own Arctic Ocean. The presence of liquid water on the Red Planet is one of the factors that makes it among the most promising places in our solar system to search for signs of microscopic life, according to NASA.
"The evidence of alien life is in most photos of Mars and other planets, but the work must be put in to find the details," Waring wrote. On that one, we might be able to agree.
Waring, who once claimed on his site that an "ancient head" had been found on Mars resembling then-President Barack Obama's (I mean, see for yourself, but suffice it to say it does not) mysteriously shut down his site for a period of 2017, according to the Houston Chronicle. However, he returned shortly after and has been going about business as usual for some time now.
“Don't those all just look like rocks to you?” NASA representative Guy Webster told Newsweek via email in response to a request for comment on the claims. “They do to me. It can be fun to point out 'faces,' 'statues,' 'seashells' and other shapes in rocks that were sculpted by erosion...The hundreds of thousands of raw images made easily available to the public from America's Mars rovers give plenty of opportunity for people who like to do so.”
The scientific name for the common phenomenon of seeing shapes and designs where there are none is pareidolia. Our brains see a blank canvas, like clouds or tea leaves or the surface of the moon or Mars, and autocomplete with imagery that is familiar to us to help make sense of them. Understandably, it’s something that comes up with NASA photos quite a lot.
