Wetenschappers boren 2152 meter diep gat in West-Antarctische ijskap
Wetenschappers boren 2152 meter diep gat in West-Antarctische ijskap
Caroline Kraaijvanger
In 2017, NASA scientists at the Goddard Space Flight Center published a study warning that because of recent anomalies in the Earth’s protective magnetic field, dangerous clouds of cosmic radiationcould soon pose serious health risks to airline crews and passengers flying at high altitudes. Since then, several airliners have faced lawsuits from crews who say theyexperienced unexplained illnessesas a result of their time in the air. Are the two connected?
The Earth’s magnetic field serves as a shield against cosmic rays, but that field is weakening in places for reasons still unknown.
Hard to say, but a recent spate of mysterious illnesses on flights sure makes it seem like something weird is going on aboard airliners lately, whether or not it’s related to NASA’s 2017 warnings about cosmic radiation. On January 2, multiple passengers aboard Frontier Airlines Flight 1397 flight from Cleveland, Ohio to Tampa, Florida fell ill with a mysterious illness. Dozens of passengers suddenly became nauseated and many of them vomited, prompting the plane to land early. The sick passengers were moved to the front of the plane for triage while the rest had to be moved to the rear of the aircraft where they waited to deplane for 90 minutes.
Good thing those tiny paper bags were there among the germ-infested magazines.
It’s still unclear what caused the passengers of Flight 1397 to fall ill, but Frontier Airlines believe it may have something to do with a water fountain at the airport. Officials from the City of Cleveland stated they would conduct an investigation, but there has been no update in the weeks that followed.
Just this week, a Dubai-bound Ural Airlines aircraft which departed from Moscow, Russia had to make an emergency landing after many passengers all fell ill simultaneously. About 90 minutes into the flight, many passengers suddenly found it difficult to breathe and became nauseated. Some of those who fell ill were reported to have “greatly dilated pupils.”
Nausea is a symptom of radiation poisoning – and just about every other form of poisoning. Airline cabins and noxious fumes go hand-in-hand sometimes.
One passenger says that as more and more people fell ill, a sense of dread filled the cabin:
I was woken up by a young woman screaming for assistance. She yelled and screamed ‘Help, help!’ because her husband felt ill. He was feeling really bad. He was suffocating and couldn’t breathe in. His face went the colour green — then a panic swept through the plane.
Similar to the Frontier Flight 1397 incident, this one currently remains unexplained. Mid-flight illnesses are nothing new, and there are plenty of things aboard a modern airliner that could make passengers ill including the stink of other passengers’ rotting flesh. Still, the sudden uptick in mid-flight illnesses coincides with recent discoveries of more and more anomalies in the Earth’s magnetic field. Could NASA’s warning about cosmic radiation finally be coming true?
Scientists experimenting on an Antarctic lake hidden deep under glacial cover made a surprising discovery when mud scrapped from an instrument lowered into its dark, icy depths revealed ancient signs of life.
The startling discovery was made in December, after a team from the Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access (SALSA) expedition drilled a hole through a kilometer-thick slab of ice on Lake Mercer, located under an ice sheet some 600km from the South Pole.
The muddy haul first revealed the remains of photosynthetic algae that lived in the area millions of years ago, when the area now called the Antarctic was much warmer.
The researchers were then thrilled to uncover a collection of higher lifeforms: crustaceans, the tendril of a plant or fungus, and an eight-legged tardigrade. Known as “water bear,” this micro-animal is an ultimate survivor, with experiments in the past seeing it withstand desiccation (total drying up of the body), solar radiation, both boiling and freezing temperatures, and even living over a week in outer space.
A previous drilling expedition at Lake Whillans in 2013, some 50km from Lake Mercer, found an environment brimming with microbes, but no signs of more complex life. Thinking that the specimens may have been initially introduced on contaminated equipment, the team cleaned the instruments and repeated the process only to find more ancient lifeforms in the mud.
Researchers used a hot-water drill to bore through 3,500 feet down into an Antarctic subglacial lake, and found tiny carcasses of preserved animals.
(Photo Credit: Billy Collins/SALSA Science Team)
Calling the discovery “fully unexpected,” David Harwood, a micropaleontologist with the SALSA team, told Nature magazine that the discovered remains were in excellent condition.
“It looked really fresh,” he said of one crustacean found with tiny, delicate hairs still attached. “Like something that had been living.”Another shrimp-like crustacean was found with legs still hanging from it and discolored “like an old leaf that’s been sitting on the ground for a season,” Harwood added.
Theories are now sprouting as to how the organisms came to be in the lake. Some suggest they may have lived in nearby ponds and streams during warm periods of glacial retreat between 10,000 and 120,000 years ago, before being washed into the lake through underground rivers deep beneath the ice or a moving glacier.
After covering up the bored hole in January, the SALSA team are now using carbon dating and attempts to sequence the creatures’ DNA in a bid to date them accurately and compare them to modern specimens. This may provide answers to how far the continent’s glaciers retreated millennia ago.
However, the surprise discovery may also inspire hope for those waiting on future exploration of extraterrestrial subglacial worlds. NASA is planning to drill into the frozen crust of Jupiter’s moon Europa in search for alien life, while closer to home on Mars stunning photos of a crater filled with water ice have teased space lovers worldwide.

Over the last week, residents of Kingston, Ontario have observed an unidentified aircraft seemingly circling the city. While many of the city’s residents have heard the craft, few have actually seen it. The aircraft mostly flies at night seemingly without navigation lights, and many eyewitnesses report a strange red glow coming from the craft, likely from the instrument panel. While most observers suspect the aircraft is operated by either the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP), Canadian Security Intelligence, or Royal Canadian Air Force, but all agencies have denied any knowledge of the craft. What might the plane be doing up there, and who is behind this mysterious operation?
Kingston is found on the shores of Lake Ontario at the mouth of the St. Lawrence River.
While we might not be any closer to answering those questions, the mystery aircraft has finally been caught on film. According to the Kingston Whig Standard, a “local aircraft enthusiast” spotted the craft on January 13 and managed to get a photo of it. Neil Aird, a member of the real-time flight-tracking site Flightradar24, says he was plane spotting when he heard the mystery craft and was lucky enough to catch a glimpse long enough to snap a photograph:
As an aircraft enthusiast, not being able to see the plane but constantly hear it really is annoying. t took me a while to get [the photo]. When I took that picture, I was actually looking for another aircraft, a [Bombardier] Dash 8, but then it flew across my binoculars and I thought: ‘Aha! Gotcha.’
Aird says the craft appears to be a Pilatus PC-12, a single-engine passenger and cargo aircraft, and operates under the call sign C-GMPB PC-12 according to his own personal radar. That call sign is consistent with the appearance of the craft and oddly enough, the RCMP owns one. Mystery solved?
A Pilatus PC-12
Not quite. A spokesperson for Kingston’s Norman Rogers Airport says they don’t know anything about the craft, and when asked for comment the RCMP issued another vague boilerplate statement in which they neither confirm nor deny the craft:
The RCMP’s primary concern is the safety and security of Canadians. We have multiple aircraft that support our mandate in Ontario and elsewhere in the country. To maintain the integrity of our investigations and operations, the location of our aircraft is not disclosed. We therefore have no additional information to share with you at this time.
It certainly seems as if someone is flying around in one of the RCMP’s aircraft, but what’s it doing up there? What’s going on in Kingston, Ontario that would require such secrecy?
Alarming Increase In Volcanic Eruptions World Wide And Nobody Knows Why
Alarming Increase In Volcanic Eruptions World Wide And Nobody Knows Why
Not many people know about it because no one is talking about it, probably because they have no idea why it's happening. The world’s volcanic activity has dramatically increased recently and they are erupting faster and more frequently than ever before. Furthermore, earthquakes are also on the rise.
What is happening?
While no one can say for sure what all this commotion is about, one thing is clear - the planet is becoming more and more unstable. There was a total of 3,542 volcanic eruptions during the 20th Century. Now, dividing that number by 100 gives an average of 35 eruptions per year, roughly. This means that the number of volcanic eruptions right now is far more than the 20th Century’s average for the entire year.
In addition to this, there are large numbers of earthquakes taking place too. If it seems like volcanic eruptions and earthquakes are taking place more frequently, it's probably because they are. The best theory that scientists can come up with as of yet is that the Earth is preparing its self for some sort of “world-changing mega tremor” with the power to split up continents and change the geography of the world as we know it today.
Where's the proof?
The proof is in the numbers. Raw data. The data shows that the number of global magnitude six (M6) or higher earthquakes from 1980 to 1989 increased to an average of 108.5 earthquakes per year, from 2000 to 2009 the planet averaged 160.9 earthquakes per year. This shows a 38.9% increase of M6+ earthquakes in these time frames.
Furthermore, there also appears to be growing unrest among the world’s supervolcanoes. Iceland is home to some of the most dangerous volcanoes on the planet and there is significant activity there. Also Santorini in Greece, Uturuncu in Bolivia, the Yellowstone and Long Valley calderas in the U.S, Laguna del Maule in Chile, Italy’s Campi Flegrei – almost all of the world’s active super-volcanic systems are starting to show some signs of inflation, which is an early indication that pressure is building in these volcanic systems and they are getting ready to explode.
More data can be found at this link; volcano.si.edu/.... This is just the month of December 2018. It is definitely a worrying prospect and everyone should be more cautious, especially when in the vicinity of volcanoes. Only time will tell how this will turn out and there isn't much we can do about it. All we can do now is wait…
Alien ‘artefacts’ made by civilisations from Mars or Venus could be hidden on Earth, Nasa study suggests
Alien ‘artefacts’ made by civilisations from Mars or Venus could be hidden on Earth, Nasa study suggests
Jasper Hamill
You might think that humanity’s best chance of finding alien life involves peering deep into space and analysing faraway galaxies.
But a Nasa study has suggested the truth about extraterrestrials could be lurking right under our noses.
Dozens of space scientists have teamed up to explore how our species could detect ‘technosignatures’, the name for pieces of evidence which give away the presence of advanced alien civilisations.
Some of these tell-tale signs are obvious. For instance, if loads of radio waves are detected coming from a distant star system, then it could be a clue which shows it’s inhabited by intelligent extraterrestrial organisms.
The truth might not be found out in space, but on our very own planet
(Picture: Getty)
We could also search for alien societies by looking for ‘megastructures’ called Dyson Spheres, which are theoretical power stations built surrounding a star to harvest its energy.
These would be easy to spot because they are likely to be gigantic and block out starlight whenever they pass in front of their sun.
Other technosignatures are harder to identify, such as evidence that a planet has been polluted by heavy industry.
In the new report, scientists also make the fascinating suggestion that our own planet may be hiding alien ‘artefacts’, some of which may even have been built by extinct civilisations which lived on Mars, Venus or even Earth.
‘Because the geological, paleontological, and archaeological records on Earth are so incomplete, it is even possible that the Earth itself hosts such artefacts, although, again, this idea is often conflated with unscientific popular imaginings and science fiction stories about alien visitation, and so must be approached carefully,’ researchers wrote.
‘If technosignatures were discovered in the solar system, it would be worth considering whether their origin might not be interstellar. Specifically, since the Earth is home to the only known species capable of interstellar communication and planetary travel (although both technologies remain in their early development), the Earth remains the only known planet fecund enough to promote technological life, and so it or an early, habitable Mars or Venus could even be the origin of such technology.’
So far, our species has only spotted one potential alien artefact, although most scientists believe its origins are natural rather than artificial.
An artist’s impression of ‘Oumuamua, which means ‘messenger’ in Hawaiian
This Nasa graphic shows the distinctive tumbling motion of ‘Oumuamua
It changed direction as it passed the sun, which may have been caused by a natural process called outgassing – although there is a very slight chance this could have been the result of it being steered somehow.
Some scientists suggested ‘Ouamuamua was an alien probe, whilst others went on to suggest our solar system could be full of similar extraterrestrial spacecraft.
Sadly, the consensus is that it was a comet ejected from a farway star system and sent on a long journey through the void.
In the latest study, scientists added: ‘Technosignatures in the solar system might come in the form of free-floating probes or structures—either passing through the solar system or in orbit around the Sun or other body—or in the form of structures or other signs of technologies on planetary surfaces.’
The research is collected in a paper called ‘Nasa and the search for technosignatures: A Report from the NASA Technosignatures Workshop’. It has just been published online and was produced after a conference in September 2018.
What can artificial intelligence tell us about ourselves? Despite the growing urge to barricade myself in a log cabin on the side of a mountain, 300 miles away from the nearest circuit board, and answer “The day a robot tells me anything is the day I die,” it turns out A.I. can reveal a lot about the mysterious and murky history of human evolution. Although like all good mysteries, the more information we get, the murkier it becomes. According to anarticle publishedin Nature Communications, scientists from the Institute of Evolutionary Biology (IBE), the Centro Nacional de Análisis Genómico (CNAG-CRG) of the Centre for Genomic Regulation (CRG), and the University of Tartu have successfully used artificial intelligence deep-learning algorithms to identify the existence of a third, unknown, human species in the genome of Asian individuals.
We know that modern humans interbred with Neanderthals in Eurasia and Denisovens in Asia and Oceania, but scientists have theorized that there may have been a third species of hominid that made its way into the modern human genome. Now, thanks to these deep learning algorithms, that has been confirmed. The identity of third species is still a mystery, however, but scientists believe this species may have been a hybrid species of Neanderthal and Denisoven. This would bolster the argument that the remains of a Neanderthal-Denisovan hybrid found this past summer in a cave in Denisova was not an isolated incident, but evidence of an ongoing evolutionary progression. According to Mayukh Mondal, a researcher with the University of Tartu:
“Our theory coincides with the hybrid specimen discovered recently in Denisova, although as yet we cannot rule out other possibilities.”
The current model of human evolution holds that some 80,000 years ago, modern humans left the African Continent and began their migration throughout the rest of the globe. Up until 40,000 years ago modern humans co-existed with the other known species of hominids, Neanderthals and Denisovans. Recent studies have determined that these other species of hominids interbred with humans, giving us the weird hominid casserole that all of us beautiful people are today. While the recent findings don’t change that, it reminds us that the whole picture is quite a bit more complicated than we’ve previously been able to determine.
Basically, this picture is simplistic to the point of being nonsensical.
While the theory of a third hominid species has existed for a while, it was only through deep learning algorithms that scientists were able to prove it. According to Òscar Lao, principal investigator at the CNAG-CRG:
“[Deep learning] is an algorithm that imitates the way in which the nervous system of mammals works, with different artificial neurons that specialise and learn to detect, in data, patterns that are important for performing a given task. We have used this property to get the algorithm to learn to predict human demographics using genomes obtained through hundreds of thousands of simulations. Whenever we run a simulation we are travelling along a possible path in the history of humankind. Of all simulations, deep learning allows us to observe what makes the ancestral puzzle fit together.”
Deep learning algorithms attempt to model how the human brain learns.
This is the first time that deep learning has been able to explain part of human history, and researchers are excited for the implications this has in biology, genetics, and evolution.
I’ll bet good money that somewhere down the line this, A.I. stuff is going to start feeding us disinformation. Sooner or later there’s going to be a journal article titled “Deep Learning Algorithms Determine Humans Were Born to Serve the Great Machine,” and you’ll be wishing you had the foresight to build a sweet cabin.
They’re small, with soft flabby bodies, over-sized heads and thin, weakly developed bones. Aliens? That’s one thought, but they’re more likely a group of freaky fish that have evolved to the point that they can live in the oxygen-depleted dead zones of the ocean. Are they the eventual survivors of whatever it is we eventually do to destroy the rest of life on Earth?
“I could hardly believe my eyes. We observed cusk eels, grenadiers, and lollipop sharks actively swimming around in areas where the oxygen concentration was less than one percent of typical surface oxygen concentrations. We were in a suboxic habitat, which should exclude fish, but instead there were hundreds of fish. I immediately knew this was something special that challenged our existing understanding of the limits of hypoxia [low-oxygen] tolerance.”
In a paper published in the journal Ecology, Natalya Gallo, graduate student at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography, described what she and a research team from the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) found on a cruise and dive trip to some deep basins in the Gulf of California that are known to be suboxic – so-called dead zones where oxygen levels are so low that few if any animals or plants can live there. The remotely operated Doc Ricketts underwater robot(developed by MBARI) was sent to explore the Cerralvo Trough at depths between 600–900 meter (1,969–2,953 ft) and unexpectedly found the freaky-looking fish, not just surviving but thriving in schools numbering in the hundreds.
Cusk eel
“Many other types of fish are considered tolerant of low-oxygen conditions. But the fish in these parts of the Gulf are like the winners among a group of elite Olympic athletes.”
These Michael Phelps of the dead zone were predominantly cusk eels (Cherublemma emmelas) and lollipop cat sharks (Cephalurus cephalus). Both are bottom feeders with large heads and slender soft bodies (hence the name ‘lollipop’) which are good for living at great depths, and large gills which may help them take in enough of the suboxic water to get sufficient oxygen to live.
Obviously, these ‘Olympian’ fish don’t have Phelps-like Olympic bodies. It turns out they don’t have Phelpsian appetites either. What and how much these cull eels and cat sharks eat is still a mystery because they live in a dead zone which is, as its name suggests, dead. No fish, no plants, no worms, no Big Macs. It could be that their small, flabby, almost gelatinous bodies have low metabolisms but Gallo – whose Ph.D. thesis focuses on animals living in very low-oxygen environments – wants more data, which requires more dives into the Cerralvo Trough and the Gulf of California.
Lollipop cat shark
(Wikipedia)
This level of oxygen-deprived living is so unprecedented, the MBARI team believes these particular fish need a new name or classification. Their suggestion is ‘ligooxyphile’, which is Greek for ‘little oxygen lover’.
Little oxygen lovers. Is that the future of the rest of the creatures in our oceans … and possibly for us landlubber creatures as well? Team member and biological oceanographer Lisa Levin thinks it may be too late.
“Continued warming of the ocean may challenge even the most hypoxia-tolerant fishes. Elevated temperature will lower the solubility of oxygen in the water while increasing the amount of oxygen the fish need to survive.”
Do we all need to evolve into small, flabby, big-headed mouth-breathers? Or are we already?
Experts Warn Of A Cataclysmic Flip Of Earth’s Magnetic Field As A “Mysterious Anomaly” Under The Continent Of Africa Causes It To Weaken January 3, 2019 by Michael T. Snyder
Experts Warn Of A Cataclysmic Flip Of Earth’s Magnetic Field As A “Mysterious Anomaly” Under The Continent Of Africa Causes It To Weaken
The Earth’s magnetic field is steadily getting weaker, and scientists are warning that it could soon flip. If that happens, it will be a cataclysmic event beyond anything that we have ever experienced before. Of course most people never even give much thought to the giant magnetic field that surrounds our planet, but without it modern society would simply not be possible. The magnetic field provides protection for the electrical grid which powers our homes, our businesses, our hospitals, our stores, our banks, our computers and our televisions. It is essentially an enormous “force field” that protects our world from solar storms and cosmic radiation. Right now we take that protection for granted, but scientists tell us that Earth’s magnetic field has flipped before, and that it could soon happen again.
We’ve known for more than a century that our planet’s magnetic field has been weakening at a rate of about five per cent a century, prompting concerns that the Earth’s magnetic poles could soon flip — an event that could have potentially disastrous results for life on Earth.
Unfortunately, this sort of event could happen a whole lot sooner than many had anticipated. At this moment, there is a gigantic “anomaly” directly under the continent of Africa that has scientists extremely concerned…
The region that concerns scientists the most at the moment is called the South Atlantic Anomaly – a huge expanse of the field stretching from Chile to Zimbabwe. The field is so weak within the anomaly that it’s hazardous for Earth’s satellites to enter it, because the additional radiation it’s letting through could disrupt their electronics.
“We’ve known for quite some time that the magnetic field has been changing, but we didn’t really know if this was unusual for this region on a longer timescale, or whether it was normal,” physicist Vincent Hare from the University of Rochester in New York said in February this year.
I was amazed when I read that.
If the magnetic field is so weak in that region that it is dangerous for Earth’s satellites to fly over it, then what is all of that additional solar radiation doing to the people that actually live in all of those countries?
The current weakening in Earth’s magnetic field – which has been taking place for the last 160 years or so – is thought to be caused by a vast reservoir of dense rock called the African Large Low Shear Velocity Province, which sits about 2,900 kilometres (1,800 miles) below the African continent.
Or at least that is what they think, because the truth is that nobody has ever been 1,800 miles below the surface of the Earth to take a look.
In any event, everyone agrees that the Earth’s magnetic field continues to weaken, and that a flip is inevitable at some point.
If a rapid magnetic field flip were to happen in the near future, scientists tell us that electronic devices all over the globe would be fried and that “trillions of dollars in damage” would be caused…
According to a team of international scientists, including from the Australian National University (ANU), such an event in the future would increase our planet’s exposure to the Sun’s radiation, and could cause trillions of dollars in damage by decimating power and communications systems across the globe.
Already, we are seeing major Earth changes happen all over the globe, and this is a major theme in my work. Major storms are becoming larger and more intense, volcanic eruptions are happening more frequently, and big earthquakes are becoming increasingly common.
The truth is that the crust of our planet is cracked and we are just floating on the pieces. Our world is becoming increasingly unstable, and the worst is yet to come.

Giant Ice Disk Shows Up In River May Indicate UFO Is Below! Maine, Videos, UFO Sighting News.
Date of discovery: January 20, 2019 Location of discovery: Westbrook, Maine This frozen disk was discovered spinning in a river at the town of Westbrook, Maine. The ice is in a perfect circle and may be forming above the river due to a large UFO parked below the river. If a metallic object is below the water, it could actually create a round circle of ice in the winter due to the cold metal shape and different temp above the metal craft. Thus the a disk the size of the UFO is forming. I do believe if radar is used to examine the lake floor, a round metallic craft will be seen. Scott C. Waring
Fascinating: These 7 predictions by sci-fi authors have really come true
Fascinating: These 7 predictions by sci-fi authors have really come true
Science fiction has inspired people for centuries. However curious their authors' view of the distant future may be, their fantastic visions often come true.
Whether Jules Verne, Aldous Huxley, Gene Roddenberry or George Lucas - they all have one thing in common: they open up a glimpse of the technology of the future that has already become reality or is at least about to become so.
#1 The moon landing
104 years before the first man would set foot on the moon, Jules Verne published his idea of landing on the moon. The novel "From Earth to Moon" from 1865 is about three Americans who take off with a spaceship into space and land on the moon.
#2 The communicator from "Star Trek"
In 1966, the famous communication device from Star Trek was presented to the public for the first time. What seemed revolutionary at the time is now reminiscent of a folding mobile phone.
Although engineers were already working on mobile phone technology in the 1960s, it took Motorola until 1973 to present the world's first mobile phone.
Ten years later, in 1983, the then heavy, large and expensive devices came onto the market. However, the world had to wait another six years for the really first clamshell mobile phone. The device, which was then released, came very close to the Star Trek communicator.
#3 The Iron Man Suit
Ever since it first appeared in the Iron Man comics, Tony Stark's suit has been a legend. Although nobody will be flying around in such high-tech wonders in the near future, the US military is working under the name "Talos" on a technology that combines some of the features of the Iron Man suit.
In addition, there are hobby craftsmen like Richard Browning, who has made his very own flight suit in the style of Iron Man.
#4 Electrically powered submarines
Jules Verne, the second: In his novel "20,000 Miles Under the Sea" from 1870, the Sci Fi author impressively describes a submarine that is completely powered by electricity. At that time, however, such monsters functioned exclusively mechanically.
An MIT historian decades later confirmed to National Geographic that Verne's fictional submarine "Nautilus" would hardly differ from today's watercraft.
#5 Bluetooth headset
In "Fahrenehit 451" of 1953, Sci-Fi writer Ray Bradbury wrote about "shells" and "thimble-sized radios" that are very similar to today's Bluetooth headphones. Today Apple AirPods are used by millions of people every day.
According to Bradbury, his devices "created an electronic ocean of sounds, music, and conversation that washed away on the beach of your waking consciousness.
#6 The atomic bomb
H.G. Wells, author of "The Liberated World", visioned in 1914 in his novel of a grenade made of uranium that "exploded indefinitely". Three decades later, these bombs were dropped on Japan and cost the lives of countless people.
Wells himself described a drop from an airplane, as was the case during the Second World War. Nevertheless, experts say that the author's invented atomic bombs differed significantly from their very real counterparts. They exploded continuously for several days, weeks or months.
#7 Driving robot cars
Cars with "robot brains" said Isaac Asimov, father of the robot laws, already in 1964 before, after he had visited the world exhibition at that time.
More than 50 years later, companies such as Waymo, Tesla, Apple, and others are trying to create autonomous vehicles that do without the driver's help. Many of them want to bring their vehicles onto the roads by 2030.
Conclusion: Science fiction is real
It is a fascinating thought that people can think up technological developments that will become reality decades later. However, we do not know to what extent this has influenced subsequent generations and has led to the implementation of certain concepts.
One of the lesser known aspects of theBob Lazar controversy– a very bizarre aspect, I have to say – is that which suggests he just might have seen an alienentity at Area 51– a live one, no less. A joke? A case of mistaken identity (of what I have no idea at all)? A hoax? A strange case of someone screwing around with Lazar’s mind? The odd story gets very little publicity, but it’s as fascinating as it is downright weird. The issue of aliens – alive, dead or possibly both over at Area 51’s secret S-4 facility – first surfaced from Lazar in the early part of 1989, roughly thirty years ago. When asked about that specific matter by journalist George Knapp, Lazar quickly shot down the question in what was undeniably a very awkward fashion and he chose to change the subject. Later on though, in what was a private, rather than public, interview Lazar opened up a little bit more on the curious claims. What he had to say was brief but amazing – if it’s all true, of course. That, needless to say, is the most important aspect of the story.
According to Lazar’s memories of the strange situation he is said to have found himself in, “I walked down the hallway at one time I was working down there, and there were these doors – the doors that go to the hangar are smaller than the doors in the corridors and have a 9-inch or 12-inch square window with little wires running through it, just about head level. And as I was walking by, I just glanced in and I noticed – at a quick glance – there were two guys in white lab coats, facing me towards the door.”
Lazar then got to what is undeniably the heart of the matter: the two men were said to have been looking down at a small, humanoid figure with long arms. And seemingly talking to it, no less! As you do. Although Lazar has gone on record as saying that he only saw the entity for a second or so, he was in no doubt about what it appeared to be. I say “appeared” because Lazar himself admitted that he suspected this was all some kind of strange set-up. He said of this thought-provoking possibility: “Maybe they stuck a doll in front of these guys and made me walk by it and look at it, just to see what my reaction would be.”
Such a thing is not at all impossible, as the following brief, but notable, comment from Lazar makes clear: “They play so many mind games there [italics mine].” While enthusiastic UFO researchers may dearly want to believe that living aliens are running around and hanging out at Area 51, Lazar’s carefully worded statement suggests that we should exercise a significant amount of restraint on this issue – at least until, or if, further vindication comes along. So far, it has not – to any degree at all. George Knapp, who spent a lot of time trying to secure and figure out the whole story of Bob Lazar, made a thought-provoking statement in a 1993 paper for the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON). It may have a bearing on the issue of how certain elements of the U.S. government – such as counterintelligence and disinformation experts – might be using the UFO issue as a cover for something else, such as a dummy for an alien, we might well suggest. Knapp said in his paper, “Area 51, Bob Lazar, and Disinformation – A Reevaluation“: “Again and again, I have heard self-appointed Groom Lake experts conclude, without any reservations, that the Groom Lake aerial ballet is disinformation, pure theater, a show designed to distract attention away from earthly black projects, or as some sort of exercise in mass psychology.” It’s a paper I recommend to anyone and everyone with an interest in the Area 51 saga; you really should read it.
As all of the above demonstrates, there is a distinct possibility that a great deal of high-strangeness is afoot at Area 51; however, that does not mean UFOs and aliens (dead or alive) are necessarily within its confines. I would be extremelysurprised, and totally amazed, if they were. Maybe, someone wants us to believe that’s what’s going on, but for reasons which are not yet fully understood.
Controversial plans from a Russian firm would see adverts run across the evening sky using hundreds of tiny orbiting satellites.
The ambitious marketing project would beam down luminous slogans and logos from 300 miles (480 kilometres) above the people it is targeting.
StartRocket is a budding company hoping to use Cubesats - briefcase sized spacecrafts - in low-Earth orbit and arranging them in a particular way based on the demands of the paying customer.
They would reflect light from the sun back towards Earth's surface and therefore only be functional when light is available near Earth but not on the surface, such as at dawn and dusk.
Each satellite would have a huge reflective sail which would act as a single pixel within the display.
Not everyone is happy with the plans, however, with critics pointing out the problem of light pollution the scheme will generate.
This may even threaten astronomical research on the ground, it has been claimed.

A Russian firm wants to to put adverts in the sky using hundreds of tiny orbiting satellites. The ambitious marketing project would beam down luminous signs and logos from space from 300 miles (480 kilometres) above the people it is targeting
StartRocket estimates the advert would measure approximately 19 square miles (50 square kilometres).
The advert would theoretically be visible for a total of six minutes at a time and exist three or four times a day.
'We are ruled by brands and events,' project leader Vlad Sitnikov told Futurism.
'The Super Bowl, Coca Cola, Brexit, the Olympics, Mercedes, FIFA, Supreme and the Mexican wall.
'The economy is the blood system of society. Entertainment and advertising are at its heart.
'We will live in space, and humankind will start delivering its culture to space. The more professional and experienced pioneers will make it better for everyone.'

The theory has since caused a significant stir in the astronomical society with many outraged by the prospect of adverts in space.
'It's a threat to the ability to do astronomical research from the ground,' astronomer John Barentine of the International Dark Sky Association told Astronomy.com.
'Every one of those moving blips of light in the night sky is something that can interfere with our ability to collect photons from astronomical sources.'
Space entertainment, as it is being called, is a developing field with many individuals and companies looking to use space for profit.

WHAT ARE CUBESATS?
A cubesat is a miniature satellite that has been sent into space.
Nasa defines them as a class of nanosatellites that use a standard size and form factor.
Each unit, or U, is 10cm x 10cm x 10cm (4 in x 4 in x 4 in) and the cubes can be pieced together to create larger structures.
These can include 1.5, 2, 3, 6, and even 12U objects.
They are often made of commercial off the shelf products and are a low-cost option for space exploration.
Cubesats have a variety of functions. The small satellites are intended for low Earth orbit (LEO) where they perform a number of scientific research functions and explore new space technologies.
They were originally developed to teach university students about satellites, CubeSats are now a major commercial technology, providing data on everything from shipping routes to environmental changes.

Remember that image of Carl Sagan holding the “Don’t Forget, No Billboards in Space” sign that’s been bouncing around the internet the past few years? Turns out its fake, but that in no way takes away from the sentiment. Space in many ways is the final frontier, the last piece of untouched, untainted real estate we have on our shrinking, stinking planet. Why ruin it with advertising?
Let’s agree to ignore the massive amounts of orbital pollution surrounding the Earth.
Billboards in space sound objectively horrible to anyone who’s not a reptilian capitalist overlord, which is exactly why a Russian startup with massive amounts of venture capital behind it already has the billboards ready to fill the night sky with flashing neon reminders of the hellish corporate dystopia we’ve found ourselves in. Just wait until They find a way to advertise to us in our dreams.
The real photograph showed Sagan holding one of the plaques sent along with the Pioneer 10 and Pioneer 11 spacecraft.
Aerospace startup StartRocket wants to launch tiny cube satellites into orbit some 400-500 (~250-300 miles) kilometers above the Earth in order to create massive glowing displays which could be seen from dozens of square kilometers below at a time. The landing page on the company’s website displays an image of stargazers taking in the nightmarish scene of a fake Coca-Cola logo (“Loca-Cola”) floating through the night sky along with the mission statement “Space has to be beautiful. With the best brands, our sky will amaze us every night.” Blech. StartRocket project leader Vlad Sitnikov told Futurism that regardless of what literally everyone else in the world says, he insists his vision is all about bringing “beauty” to the world – in the form of brand names and logos:
We are ruled by brands and events. The economy is the blood system of society. Entertainment and advertising are at its heart. We will live in space, and humankind will start delivering its culture to space. The more professional and experienced pioneers will make it better for everyone.
The company plans on launching their first prototype in 2021, and says their orbital displays could be programmed to display logos at six minute intervals, orbiting a particular location three or four times a day. Start clawing your eyeballs out now; it can take a lot longer than you think.
Tiny cube-shaped satellites called Cubesats are being developed for all sorts of purposes.
Of course, there are huge legal and regulatory hurdles the orbital billboards would face if they ever came to fruition, so it’s unknown if they’ll ever be launched at all. Whew. Still, there is some precedent for orbital “art.” Last year, a New Zealand startup called Rocket Lab shot a cross between a disco ball and a D20 into space, prompting widespread criticism from astronomers. Caleb Scharf, director of astrobiology at Columbia University, wrote in Scientific American that despite being billed as a work of art, the orbital disco ball was merely “another invasion of my personal universe, another flashing item asking for eyeballs, adding that it was “hogging some of that precious resource, the dark night sky, polluting part of the last great wilderness” we have left on Earth. What will Scharf and other astronomers have to say about these garish orbital billboards?
Is it just me, or does this image of one cup on Mars somehow seem worse than the millions of cups currently strewn about the Earth?
I don’t know why anyone would think this one is a good idea. Anyone except for the soulless, money-hungry cacodemons who sit on the boards of the world’s largest advertising firms and multinational corporations, that is. Sure, the night sky might be ruined for everyone else you say, but listen, you commie punk: at least the billboards created a lot of value for the shareholders. What’s more important than that?
Artificial Intelligence – Software That Writes Itself
Artificial Intelligence – Software That Writes Itself
Jay Tuck explains how it’s not futuristic. It’s happening now. These computers are way smarter than we are. No one understands exactly how stock markets work any more as the algorithms are written by machines. Prices of airoplane seats are decided by machines. Picture analysis is done better by machines in hospitals.
Robots are getting cuddlier. They never die. They have no heart.
The power of AI needs explaining. – surveillance cameras are able to see phenomenal detail on the ground from 17,ooo feet. We can all be monitored by computers in real time. Facial recognition can be done from above. Our whole lives are being recorded.
Big data only works if you have artificial intelligence to make sense of it. The company that has the most information in the world is buying up all artificial intelligence companies from around the world…Google. DARPA financed robots which are able to operate as part of military units.
Modern drone Pegasus is invisible. It films the sky above and projects the image onto the bottom of the drone. Drones are not permitted to kill people without human input. Yet robots are able to make kill decisions. The goal is to get the robots to make the kill decisions.
Yet sometimes artificial intelligence makes mistakes. A robotic weapon (Talon) went wrong in a demo in Iraq and a marine was able to knock it over before it killed two hundred spectators. Yet it’s getting better every day.
Once the internet of things is brought into being, the supercomputer will operate spontaneously managing our lives. AI is a network with back-ups all over the world which cannot be dismantled. It has to be stopped before it kills us.
Scientists drilling into Mercer Lake, a Subglacial Antarctic lake locked beneath 3500 feet (one kilometer) of ice have discovered the ancient carcasses of tiny animals including “water bears,” in a finding scientists described as “fully unexpected”.
On 26th December, researchers funded by the US National Science Foundation (NSF) succeeded in melting a hole through the thick ice to the water below. A report in the journal Nature said that the Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access (SALSA) team “melted through an enormous frozen river with a high-pressure, hot-water drill.”
The water below the ice sheet is hydraulically active and connected with the Ross Sea and Mercer Lake has been identified as being at high risk of collapsing with the West Antarctic Ice Sheet, due to global warming. This is only the second time humans have ever glimpsed the contents of the lake and the massive scientific operation was conducted with technologies including “ice-penetrating radar and other remote-sensing techniques“, according to the article in Nature.

Rediscovering Ancient Subaquatic Life
The Guardian reported that the scientists took samples of mud from the bottom of the lake’s icy waters and found “tendrils of plant or fungi and remnants of photosynthetic algae that lived and died in the area millions of years ago when Antarctica was much warmer.” The researchers later discovered shrimp-like crustaceans and eight-legged tardigrades, or “water bears” which are described as being smaller than poppy seeds.
David Harwood, a micro-palaeontologist at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, told reporters at Nature that discovering the animals in the ancient lake was “fully unexpected”, but what really shocked biologists at Lake Mercer was the realization that some of the beasts were landlubbers.
The scientists know that these ancient creatures inhabited Transantarctic Mountain ponds and streams when the glaciers had receded during warm periods between 10,000 years or 120,000 years ago. But an outstanding problem is that these crustaceans and tardigrade inhabited ponds some 50 miles (80 kilometers) from Lake Mercer, and how they got there is not yet clear.
DNA Might Provide Answers to the Creatures’ Ancient Origins

On 5 th January, the scientists sealed the borehole and they think it will take several years to analyze and test all of the collected samples. They need to test DNA samples from the carcasses of the crustaceans to ascertain whether they were marine or freshwater species. The SALSA team also aim to determine the age of the organic material with carbon dating and they will also sequence the creatures’ DNA attempting to answer how, when and how far the Antarctica’s glaciers retreated over the millennia.
In 2013, Slawek Tulaczyk, a glaciologist at the University of California, Santa Cruz, was co-leader in a drilling expedition at Lake Whillans, a subglacial Antarctic lake 50 kilometres (31 miles) from Lake Mercer. Tulaczyk, who has been studying sediment samples from lakes beneath glacial ice since the 1990s, told The Guardian that “nothing like that has ever been found before under the ice sheet.” An earlier article in Nature reported that although Tulaczyk’s team had found Lake Whillans brimming with microbes, they had not observed any “signs of higher life,” like that discovered at Mercer Lake.
The whole idea of lakes beneath Antarctica’s frozen cover was not really considered until the 1990s when satellite seismic mapping technologies and ice-penetrating radar began to reveal evidence of subglacial lakes.
Well, that didn’t take long. On December 30th, 2018, researchers from the SALSA (Subglacial Antarctic Lakes Scientific Access) expedition used hot water to drill through Antarctic ice to a depth of 1,084 meters (3,556 feet) toreach Lake Mercer – a “lost” lake buried 600 kilometers from the South Pole. While they expected to find the microbes that seem to exist everywhere and in the harshest conditions, the researchers scraping mud off of an instrument retrieved from Lake Mercer were stunned to find it contained the remains of higher life forms – crustaceans, plants and one hardy little eight-legged bear.
“Fully unexpected.”
In a press release published in the journal Nature, University of Nebraska-Lincoln micro-palaeontologist (talk about specialization) David Harwood described his reaction to what he saw with his microscope positioned over a speck of the mud from a lake that has been locked under the ice for thousands of years. He expected to see the million-year-old shells of photosynthetic algae from Antarctica’s warmer times. What he didn’t expect was something that looked like “an old leaf that’s been sitting on the ground for a season.” That “leaf” turned out to be the shell and legs of a shrimp-like crustacean. In micro-paleontology, where there’s one, there’s bound to be another and sure enough, Harwood found a fresher specimen that looked much like it did when it was alive. He also recognized that one of the legged creatures was a tardigrade, the ‘water bears’ that seem to be able to survive the harshest conditions, and things resembling worms were tendrils of a land-dwelling plant or fungus.
To rule out the possibility that the unexpected creatures were the result of their own doing, the researchers sterilized the probe and sent it back down again. Harwood’s microscope found more crustaceans in the new mud. That means they definitely lived in Lake Mercer. But how did they get there?
To answer that question , the mud was sent to animal ecologist Byron Adams at McMurdo Station on the Antarctic coast. He recognized the crustaceans, tardigrade and fungi as the same creatures he’s seen alive in regions of Antarctica called the Dry Valleys and the Transantarctic Mountains. Based on that, he believes the creatures actually lived tens of thousands of years ago in the Transarctic Mountains. After they died, their remains were washed down into Lake Mercer where they intermingled with the million-year-old diatoms.
“What was sort of stunning about the stuff from Lake Mercer is it’s not super, super-old. They’ve not been dead that long.”
That’s disappointing news to those who were hoping the creatures actually lived in the buried lake, but Adams doesn’t rule out the possibility and would like to see more mud, thinking “it’s possible that you could still find things that are alive.” In the meantime, he points out that biologists are now changing the history of Antarctica once written by geologists and glaciologists. The SALSA will now use radiocarbon dating to determine the age of the creatures and DNA testing to find out if they lived in fresh water or the ocean. Further tests will determine if they were surface creatures eating algae or were actually able to live in the dark, sub-ice lake where they were found.
You never know what you might catch in Antarctica
This is truly exciting research, but the scientists are racing against the Antarctica-melting force of climate change. Will we find out where we came from before it’s no longer here?

There is absolutely no doubt that the world, right now, is a dangerous place – an extremely dangerous place. In light of all that, an important questions needs to be asked – and answered. If war comes – and it turns nuclear – will world leaders and elite figures head deep below the surface of the planet, only to return years later to claim what remains of the planet and human civilization? Such a thing is not at all impossible. In fact, there are significant signs that plans are indeed being made to ensure that the underground will be the place to be if the apocalypse occurs. But, as is usually the case, it will be the controlling elite who will be calling the shots, rather than the rest of us. Let’s take a look at some of the highly-classified installations that exist on our planet and how they may make use of them if the unthinkable happens.
Given the fact that Russia amounts to a huge area of land, there are plenty of areas in which secure, underground facilities can be built – and which have been built. The U.S. Intelligence community has known for decades that at least two, massive facilities exist – and which have the ability to survive nuclear strikes, chiefly as a result of the fact that they are built deeply into almost impenetrable mountains. Those same mountains are Mount Yamantau and the Kosvinsky Mountains.
As for Yamantau, it stands at in excess of 5,000 feet and is the highest mountain in the Urals. As far back as the 1990s, the Russians began the construction of a massive facility within Mount Yamantau, primarily to provide the controlling elite with a secure place in which to survive a nuclear exchange between the super-powers. American spy-satellites have confirmed massive digging on the mountain, suggesting that huge, hollowed out sections of the mountain now exist – and which have been turned into the perfect locations for literally hundreds of thousands of people to survive an attack. And make no mistake, the Yamantau facility is gigantic. Studies undertaken by American intelligence agents suggest that its size is that of Washington, D.C.’s huge Interstate 495, which surrounds the capitol of the United States. Given that I-495 has a circumference of more than sixty miles and that will give you an idea of the scale of the Yamantau facility.
As for the Mount Kosvinsky installation, that is equally almost impenetrable. Built well into the heart of the mountain – which is located in the northern Urals – it is protected by around 1,200-feet of granite and, just like the Yamantau base, is designed to provide housing for the elite in the event of a nuclear attack – and also to allow for some form of continuation of government. Presuming, of course, there is anyone left to be governed after a major nuclear exchange between the most powerful nations on the planet. All that’s really known for sure is that the construction of the base was completed by the mid-1990s and that it, like Yamantau, can house thousands of people – with a near-indefinite supply of food, water, medical supplies and all the provisions needed to survive underground not just for months but for years. Some intelligence estimates suggest possibly even for decades.
Mount Yamantau
Moving away from the Urals, but still focused on Russia, there is Kapustin Yar, which is situated in Astrakhan Oblast. Construction of the installation began back in the 1940s – with the intention being to create the ultimate facility for building and testing new and novel rockets. The first such rocket launch took place in October 1947 – it was a test using a captured Nazi A-4 rocket; one of a number that the Russians got their hands on when the Nazi regime collapsed in 1945. As the base grew in size and scope, yet further rocket tests were undertaken and by the early 1950s atomic-bombs tests were carried out in close proximity. Spy-satellites of the United States’ National Reconnaissance Office have noted that in the last few years massive digging has been afoot at Kapustin Yar, all of which suggests that the base is no longer just used for rocket and missile tests; but that it may be being refurbished on a gigantic scale – to essentially turn portions of it into a huge, underground bunker, one designed to withstand the terrible effects of a nuclear war.
Now let’s take a look at China. The most visible of the various installations that U.S. intelligence suspects have been converted into massive, bunker-style facilities is the Sanya installation, as it has become known; although, its official title is the Yulin Naval Base – Sanya being a nearby city which is home to around 700,000 people. Essentially, the installation, located on Hainan Island, is one of China’s most important submarine bases. But, it’s far more than that. The National Interest website states: “The People’s Liberation Army’s Navy (PLAN) is undoubtedly moving to buttress its presence on the island. On Yalong Bay near the island’s southeastern tip, China’s recently constructed Longpo naval base is a deep-water port complete with submarine piers, an underground submarine facility with tunnel access, and a demagnetizing facility to reduce the magnetic residuals on ship hulls.”
Hainan Island
The Diplomat notes: “Open-source intelligence tools provide an informative glimpse of Hainan Island’s busy, fortified, and increasingly vital base. All told, Yulin-East encompasses over 25 square kilometers of military infrastructure lying within a protected, man-made harbor… the base accommodates surface and subsurface vessels (and most of the necessary accouterments thereof), theater and point defense weapons systems, munitions transport vehicles and depots, and administrative buildings for military commanders.” Not only that: U.S. military spy-satellites, using ground-penetrating radar systems, have been able to confirm evidence of huge excavating within the hills that surround the base. In other words, while the submarine base certainly still exists, it is being expanded on – specifically with the creation of fortified facilities buried deep within the depths of the local landscape.
What all of this demonstrates is that two of the world’s most powerful nations – Russia and China – are taking careful, rapid and secret steps to create huge underground installations which may provide some degree of survival for the elite. If anyone tells you that Russia, particularly, is not a threat, they’re wrong.
At last year’s annual “PROJECT” scientific expo in Russia, organizers showed off what they claimed was Russia’s “most advanced robot,” named Boris. Boris wowed expo attendees by conversing with hosts, liberally handing out fist bumps, and even dancing on stage to “Skibidi” by Little Big, Russia’s answer to “Gangnam Style.” Absurdist K-pop dance hits aren’t the only thing being ripped off, though: it turns out Boris wasjust some guy in a suit. Whoops.
The 3 1⁄2-inch floppy disk hot glued to the chest box was a nice touch, though.
Not to be outdone, the 38th Annual Technology Exhibition in the Ghanaian capital of Accra rolled out its own questionable displays of allegedly “advanced” technology. The exhibition featured the usual variety of telecom tech and social media apps, but the main event was without a doubt a parade sponsored by the Apostle Dr. Kwadwo Safo Kantanka, owner of Ghana’s first car maker Kantanka Automobile and frequent maker of dubious claims. At the Technology Exhibition, Kantanka showed off what was alleged to be the most advanced military technology in Ghana: soldiers wearing powered exoskeletons and a massive, heavily-armed personnel carrier. The personnel carrier seemed like it could hold up alright to small arms fire for a few minutes, but as for the cyborg supersoldiers, well, just check it out for yourself.
Those guys wouldn’t even make it into the top ten at a cosplay convention. That one dude’s “hydraulic cable” is just hanging off his leg and is obviously empty split loom tubing, and as a cosplayer myself, I know a spray painted motorcycle helmet when I see one. Part of me wants to laugh, the other part just feels embarrassed for the poor guys who had to wear those costumes in the Ghanaian heat. I have to wonder, though: what did the exhibition attendees think?
The whole parade reminds me of several times I got paid to impersonate fake business executives at grand opening spectacles in China. Everyone watching knew it wasn’t real and that I was probably just American off the street, yet somehow a collective delusion would take over and everyone would agree that yes, this 20-something unshaven white guy must be the real Fitzgerald Prescott, VP of Far East operations for the Cass Hotel Management group. Champagne would be poured, pictures would be taken, charters would be signed, then we’d all empty out into the streets and wonder what we just saw. Isn’t that how all reality works, though? We all agree we see the same things every day when in fact we have no idea how subjective our perception may be.
Yours truly, pretending to be Fitzgerald Prescott, signing the hotel charter and everything. True story.
While it’s fun to laugh at these silly costumes and wonder how anyone could have possibly tried to pass them off as real, this story only really highlights just how unequal the modern battlefield has become. With the world’s superpowers boasting technology that makes anyone else’s look like bad cosplay, it’s no wonder that terrorism and asymmetrical warfare has become the new norm. Just wait until the real cyborg supersoldiers start marching through city streets.
A simulated image of the stratospheric winds over the North Pole Jan. 18, 2019, showing how the northern polar vortex has split into two major parts – one over Canada and one over Russia.
The blast of Arctic weather headed for the United States this weekend could be a first sign of still worse things to comethis winter, with signs that a circular low-pressure system of swirling winds that normally keeps frigid air locked up at the North Pole has been disrupted and split into smaller parts.
The disruption in this counterclockwise-spinning beast, called the polar vortex, is thought to be caused in part by a warm summer over the Arctic and a relatively cold fall over Siberia. The result for the United States and northern Europe? A severe winter lasting throughout February and possibly into March.
Meteorologist Judah Cohen agreed that the breaking up of the polar vortex could be the culprit for the coming storm. Cohen, the director of seasonal forecasting for the weather risk management company Atmospheric and Environmental Research (AER), based in Lexington, Massachusetts, told Live Science that the coming snowstorms in the United States this weekend are consistent with weather models that predicted severe wintry weather to come in the coming weeks. [Infographic: Earth's Atmosphere Top to Bottom]
The weather models suggested that the disruptions would follow the pattern of polar vortex disruptions seen during the northern winter last year, which resulted in freezing weather across the United States in December and January, and a severe cold snap in March over the United Kingdom.
"This pattern looks much more active, [with] more winter type storms and Arctic outbreaks — I think I would attribute it to definitely being a polar vortex disruption, because it is very consistent with what we've seen in the past," Cohen said.
Polar winds
The northern polar vortex is a fast-flowing stream of air that circles the North Pole in the upper parts of the atmosphere, known as the stratosphere, about 20 miles (32 kilometers) above the surface.
A similar polar vortex exists over the South Pole, but it is the northern polar vortex that can bring severe winter weather to the United States and Europe.
When the northern polar vortex is strong, Cohen explained, it keeps most of the air cooled by the Arctic in the polar region, resulting in mild winter temperatures in the middle latitudes of the eastern United States, and in northern Europe and Asia.
But when the polar vortex weakens, the once-trapped cold air can meander throughout the top of the Northern Hemisphere, bringing polar temperatures and extreme winter weather to lower latitudes, he said.
This diagram shows the normal activity of the northern polar vortex (left) and what happens when the polar vortex weakens.
Credit: NOAA
"Think of the polar vortex as a spinning top, and where the polar vortex goes so goes the cold air," Cohen said. "A strong polar vortex is a fast, tightly spinning top centered over the North Pole, keeping all the cold air with it close by over the Arctic. [But] a weak or perturbed polar vortex is a spinning top that has been banged or bumped into an object multiple times … the top slows down and wobbles and can meander from its location."
As for what knocked into this spinning top, Cohen points, in part, to summer warming in the Arctic region and a relatively cold fall in Siberia.
"I have argued that Arctic change has certainly been a contributor," he said. "The loss of sea ice, especially in the Barents and Kara seas, which are near Scandinavia in north-west Russia … and also an increasing trend in Siberian snow cover in October, I think that has also been contributing.
Winter weather
In recent days, weather scientists have seen the northern polar vortex split into three smaller parts, which have now changed into two giant patches of polar winds in the stratosphere — one over northern Canada and one over central Russia.
Snowstorms have been forecast today (Jan. 18) and tomorrow (Jan. 19) for the central Plains and Midwest of the United States, as part of what's being called winter storm Harper; and the winter weather is expected to hit the mid-Atlantic and Northeast of the United States later in the weekend.
But he warned that a cold snap isn't a foregone conclusion; the winter weather could still turn out to be relatively mild if the polar vortex returns to its normal configuration in the coming weeks.
"Right now, the weather looks like it is very consistent with our expectations of how the weather would transition following these type of events, but we'll see," he said. "These [weather patterns] tend to be episodic, so it doesn't come all down once … not every day will be below normal, and we will not have snow every day."
