Hull's X-Files: some of the strangest and spookiest UFO sightings in the city's history

The historian has undergone months of painstaking research to uncover some of the city's strangest sightings

Nothing captures the imagination quite like the supernatural.

From ghosts and ghouls to unidentified flying objects, Hull and East Yorkshire is no stranger to the paranormal.

Historian Mike Covell has been spending the past few months in painstaking research into a few of the forgotton UFO sightings from around the area.

Since May 2008, the National Archives has witnessed a slow and steady release of UFO files to the public. The files feature thousands, if not millions of files, and every time they release them, they give Ufologists, or people that study UFO’s, a short window in which they can be downloaded for free.

The files, which cover between 1965 and 2008, contain numerous articles, letters, reports, eyewitness accounts, pilot testimony, police reports, drawings, maps, plans, newspaper cuttings and parliamentary questions – all linked to UFO’s.

There are newspaper cuttings, strange claims of mind control, UFO landings, crashes, and correspondence between several well-known researchers including Dr. David Clarke, Timothy Good, and Nick Redfern.

The files include sightings reported from the general public, lots of reports from Humberside Police, reports from the public to the police, reports from the public to the Hull Daily Mail, and all of the above to the Ministry of Defence and the Royal Air Force.

Some of the strangest of these include clippings from the Hull Daily Mail, scanned, photocopied, and entered into the UFO files for researchers to read in years to come.

Here are some of the highlights.

Case: DEFE-24-1971

This is a file made up of reports from across the UK, but features a large section on Captain William Shaffner, who was killed when his Lightening plane ditched in the North Sea. The accident was later linked to UFO’s and as such both the Grimsby Telegraph and the Hull Daily Mail featured two page spreads on the incident on October 22, 1992 and October 23, 1992.

This file features all the pages from the Hull Daily Mail on this incident, spread across four pages of the file.

Case: DEFE-24-1972

This file also features newspaper clippings, and contains the Captain William Schaffner articles from the Hull Daily Mail. It also contains an article from the Hull Daily Mail, dated Tuesday, November 3, 1992.

The article, entitled “Making sense of lights in the sky” features the story of Mrs June Cooper, who saw lights over the region in 1970. It goes on to link her sighting with that of Captain William Schaffner, and his ill-fated flight. She claims that she believed that she saw the UFO’s that brought him down off the coast of Flamborough.

Case: DEFE-31-182-1

This file features a report from the Hull Daily Mail dated August, 17 1993, entitled “Sightings of UFO’s on the up,” in which it states that UFO sightings in Hull and East Yorkshire are on the increase.

The claim came during a conference where a local UFO expert, named as Chris Lawson, went on record to state that the number of sightings being reported by eyewitnesses is on the increase. It goes on to include eyewitness accounts from Withernsea, and talks about national and international reports of cattle mutilations.

The file also features an article from the Hull Daily Mail, dated Friday, May 12 1993, again featuring Chris Lawson, in which it claims that UFO reports across Hull, East Yorkshire, and across the world are not only increasing, but the number of genuine reports are on the increase.

Finally this file features a newspaper clipping from the Hull Daily Mail, dated September 2, 1993, but it is nothing more than a review of the television show named Strange But True, hosted by Michael Aspel.

Case: DEFE-24-1989

This file features a report from Hull via the Ministry of Defence.

This file was one of many that was linked to a series of sightings seen over the city on the July 25 and 27 July, and August 4 1997. A number of sightings were reported to the offices of the Hull Daily Mail, which in turn were reported to the Ministry of Defence and R.A.F. Waddington.

The reporter listed in the report is unknown.

EXTRATERRESTRIAL ETIQUETTE: HOW SHOULD HUMANITY INTERACT WITH ALIEN LIFE?

Coming up with a strict set of guidelines that govern the way people on future interstellar space missions study and interact with aliens is imperative before anyone blasts off to a distant world, according to attendees at Starship Congress in August.

While a “prime directive” — the rule that prevented Star Fleet officers from interfering with the business of alien life-forms on TV’s “Star Trek” — might be a little extreme, such a rule could help govern interactions between aliens and humans.

“In the event that we discover evidence of intelligent life on another world, that will be a social, cultural and technologically influential event to human affairs which will need to be managed with great care and to ensure our culture and their culture remains intact and not disrupted by this new knowledge,” Kelvin Long, the founder of Project Icarus, said during a panel on Aug. 16.

People traveling to distant stars will be carrying  tangible and intangible aspects of human culture with them, so it should be curated responsibly before being sent to an alien planet, one expert said.

“I think it comes down to how we’re going,” Armen Papazian, the CEO of the International Space Development Hub, said. “Do we trust that this is a beautiful universe, an incredible cosmos? Do we really believe that it’s an amazing landscape, it’s a bed of stars? What do we think we’re going out there to find and are we going to embrace it or are we going to utilize? Are we trying to export our scarcity economics or are we trying to enjoy the abundant cosmos? … Whatever we are here, we’re going to export wherever we go.”

It’s possible that humans in the future will have no desire to land on exoplanets after free-roaming in space for years at a time, Icarus Interstellar president Richard Obousy said.

“I’m not convinced that when we have the capabilities to build starships … that we’ll want to go from one gravitational abyss to another gravitational abyss,” Obousy said. “I’m not convinced that settling on planets or even moons is going to be necessary.”

Humans can’t help but explore and interact with the world around them, Icarus Interstellar’s James Benford said during the panel.

“We won’t leave them alone,” Benford said. “We would like to explore alien ecology extensively to understand if there are any interactions leading to incompatibilities. We would need to establish human research stations to do that because it’s a complex problem. It seems unlikely that there would be interference between separately evolved ecologies, especially if we minimize contamination and wear the appropriate suits.”

Les Johnson, of the Tennessee Valley Interstellar Workshop, takes Benford’s ideas a little further. Johnson and his group have developed three moral principles that he hopes will serve as a guide for any interactions with all kinds of extraterrestrial life:

• Learn all you can learn before risking any kind of direct interaction
• If it seems to be alive, leave it alone.
• Avoid bringing samples to the home world because it might not be totally incompatible with our ecosystem.

When developing a strategy for first contact, it might also be important to think about the mental and physical well-being of the aliens with whom humans could come into contact, panel members stated.

Finding out that a more advanced civilization exists somewhere in the universe could be as jarring for humans around the globe as it was for native peoples when the conquistadors came to North America for the first time, Benford said.

“It wasn’t just guns, disease and steel, it was the shock of finding out that you’re not even No. 1, you’re not even No. 3,” Benford said. “That is a thing to really worry about.”

In spite of all of these rules, it will be up to the people on the starship to ultimately enforce or do away with whatever rules were in place before they left the planet.

“A vibrant interstellar civilization will be essentially ungovernable, and that observing such guidelines will be strictly left up to each and every first contact team to obey or not obey at their discretion,” Johnson said. “When someone is several light-years from home and they’ve encountered something they never encountered before, they’re going to be making the decisions regardless of what the guiding moral principles might have been when they left home.”

Speaking with Las Vegas Now on Friday, Luis Elizondo, a former intelligence officer with knowledge on the matter, explained that senior officials pushed back on the secret program over concerns that the study would become an embarrassment for the department and because it conflicted with their religious beliefs.

Elizondo, who previously spoke out about the five-year-old program to the New York Times in December 2017, stressed that though the government's funding ended in 2012, the study continues as officials from the US Navy and the CIA offered resources to further the program. It is speculated that the program is still active, just through private funding.

Mysterious Clouds: Venus' Sky Could Harbor Alien Life – Study

"There were other folks related to our efforts," Elizondo told Las Vegas Now. "It is a confederated approach so you had folks in the Navy, in DIA [the Defence Intelligence Agency], in pockets here and there. We worked collectively."

It should be noted that following Elizondo's big reveal, two videos were released by the US Department of Defense that showed servicemembers encountering unidentified flying objects.

But Elizondo isn't the only official spilling the beans on secret government programs investigating UFOs.

Nick Pope, a former UFO investigator with the UK's Ministry of Defense, told the Metro UK that he, too, encountered pushback.

"I was aware that Pentagon pushback on UFO research was in part due to the religious belief of some of those involved," Pope told the outlet. "It was an odd irony that UFO investigations were being hampered because some people's belief in God meant that they either didn't believe in the existence of extraterrestrial life or that they regarded UFOs and extraterrestrials as demonic."

"The fact that some people regard UFOs as demonic seems to have its roots in the biblical description of Satan as being ‘the prince of the power of the air' from Ephesians 2:2. Luis Elizondo says that he came up against religious pushback from senior staff when he ran the Pentagon's UFO program and I saw some evidence of this at the MoD too," Pope added.

Prior to the Metro UK's revelation Tuesday, the Guardian published an article Sunday showing that talks were going on inside the Ministry of Defense regarding the UK's UFO investigations dating back to the late 1990s.

Messages obtained by the publication stated that investigations should focus "on the possible threat to the UK [from foreign hostile powers] and technology acquisition" rather than "X-Files activities such as alien abductions."

Another memo goes on to add that inquiries "shouldn't be driven by a UFO thesis."

David Clarke, a research fellow at Sheffield Hallam University who obtained the files from the ministry following a freedom of information request, told The Guardian that UK officials have only "encouraged conspiracy theorists through their own paranoia."

After deciding that staff could be better used elsewhere, The Guardian reported that the Ministry of Defense closed its UFO desk in 2009. This was the same reason that US officials cited when revealing that their official investigation into UFOs had concluded.

Has NASA Just Accidentally Exposed Life On Mars? UFO Hunters Claims Spark Online Debate

Has NASA just accidentally revealed there is in fact alien life on Mars? Claims made by UFO hunters have sent the internet into a heated debate about an image snapped by NASA’s Curiosity rover.

The Bizarre footage, which has recently emerged on various Social Networks claims that NASA is HIDING traces of life on Mars.

A Video uploaded to YouTube by ArtAlienTV shows the alleged evidence which was photographed on January 20, 2018, on the surface of the red planet.

This image was taken by Front Hazcam: Left B (FHAZ_LEFT_B) onboard NASA’s Mars rover Curiosity on Sol 1940 (2018-01-20 14:57:11 UTC).

The image reveals an eerie Martian landscape and something ‘flying’ in the sky.

The miniature object, according to UFO hunters, represents some sort of alien bird.

“What looks like a UFO on Mars in Gale Crater. It is probably quite small and close to the rover but it is hard to tell. It may be some windblown debris of some sort but seems to have symmetry and an almost insect-like appearance. Rocks don’t fly. An open mind is required when viewing images from other planets. One day our very survival may depend on it,” wrote the uploader in the video’s description.

The narrator of the video explains that the object seen by NASA’s Curiosity rover cannot be something on the lens, as following images taken by Curiosity do not show the object anymore.

Some even claim that the image wasn’t actually taken on Mars, but that the image was snapped on Earth, suggesting that NASA never made it to Mars.

The video, images and theories surrounding the bizarre claims have created a heated online debate, resulting in different comments and opinions.

One user wrote Wow that is awesome – absolutely crazy, and another one added: “Woah, what the Hell.”

Other users suggested that the enigmatic object may have been a meteor that was caught burning up in the thin Martian atmosphere: “It could have been a little meteorite that hit the upper layer of the atmosphere. That would mean that they briefly light up brightly and leave a splash/static charge in the atmosphere, as this one but only for a very short period,” commented Star Zone.

In the past, numerous wild claims have been made about Mars. Many videos have surfaced on YouTube (and still continue to do so) showing what uploaders hail as the ultimate evidence of alien life on Mars.

However, many of these videos can easily be explained as Pareidolia— a psychological phenomenon in which the mind responds to a stimulus, usually an image or a sound, by perceiving a familiar pattern where none exists. Common examples are perceived images of animals, faces, or objects in cloud formations, the Man in the Moon, the Moon rabbit, etc.

On the other hand, a very few images are spot on and really do make you wonder if there is a slight possibility that in the distant past, perhaps millions of years ago, there was intelligent alien life on Mars, as some scientists have suggested in the past.

An alien child asking father if there is life on Earth?

DO ALIENS EXIST?

Yes, they do.

No! I mean they don’t.

Aww! What am I saying? Do aliens exist or do they not? Well, that’s the question I’m going to answer from my knowledge in the next few minutes.

First of all, let’s see what we know about aliens. According to the Pocket Oxford Dictionary, an alien typically means a “being from another world”. And then you know the rest. Green body, large black eyes (sometimes white), evil little green men, and so on. But in fact, do aliens really exist? And if they do, how exactly do they look like? My answer: Yes, they do exist. And as for what they look like, I’ll leave that to your own imagination.

So going forward with our topic, science believes that aliens do not in fact exist. But for some conspiracy theorists, they claim that not only do aliens exist, but they have also been visiting Earth since the ancient past. The conspiracy theorists believe that when aliens do arrive Earth, they are usually held captive by the united states and held in “Area 51”. If you’ve watched the movie “Race to Witch Mountain”, starred by Johnson Dwayne, that movie is a very typical example of many people’s belief about the existence of aliens. Another movie that centers around aliens is the movie series “Roswell”. It also talks about aliens visiting Earth and the government trying to cover it up by trying to hold the alien guys captive. “Men in Black” is also another good example of alien movie. The aliens visit Earth, but this organization of Men in Black has their duty in ensuring the general public do not know about their existence, let alone their visits. They are sort of the alien police force. There are hundreds, if not thousands, of other movies and books too that centers about the existence of aliens and sometimes their visiting our planet Earth. Yet science tells us that it simply is not possible for aliens to exist. One, they say, Earth is the only planet that has enough of both the two important elements which life needs before it can thrive, which are water and oxygen. And two, we’ve been searching since eternity and yet haven’t found any traces of them anywhere.

ANSWER THE QUESTION!

But I’m not here to talk about movies or books. I’m rather going to answer the question of whether aliens exist or not. Like I have said above: yes, they do exist and the following are my reasons for saying that.

1. Science tells us that only water and oxygen can support life, both of which can be found abundantly on Earth only. I agree with the second part of them being found on Earth only (if we’re talking about our own solar system alone, that is). However, let me point out a possible flaw in this theory of science. The Universe contains a very large number of Galaxies. So large that even physicists and cosmologists do not have an exact idea of how many they are and therefore put the approximate value at around 100 billion galaxies (according to Hubble), a number which they say is still likely to increase to about 200 billion as “telescope technology in space improves”. Looking at this fact, let us consider how many of these galaxies have been studied thoroughly. A very infinitesimal number I’d say.

   

   Still, in our own Milky Way galaxy alone, there are about 200 billion stars present, our sun inclusive, and judging by this, if we say that only about 10% of these stars have their own solar systems (that is, planets revolving around them), that should put us to about 20 billion solar systems. And now let’s just imagine that each of these solar systems contain only a single planet (not minding the fact that our own solar system contains 9, or eight? planets), that should give us an estimated value of 20 billion planets in our own Milky Way galaxy alone. Just imagine that! 20 billion planets. That is 200,000,000,000! If we have “only” 200 billion planets in our own galaxy, then how slim is the chance that at least another one of all these planets, apart from Earth, have the right combination of all the necessary requirements to sustain life? But that’s not all. If we go back to our calculations above about the number of galaxies we have, which we say is 100 billion, then imagine again that each of these galaxies also has approximately 20 billion solar systems too, multiply that by the possible number of solar systems in the possible number of stars we have, we should be having around 2,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 planets. That’s two sextillion planets! And it’s just a very rough estimate.

   Now again. What is the probability that not another one of these planets apart from Earth contains life? How come none of them will have the water and oxygen in abundance enough for life to thrive there? I’d say the probability of that is about really, really slim.

   

2. Second reason: On Earth, and according to science, before life can exist, two things have to be present and abundant, and they have been mentioned above: water and oxygen. But what if that is the situation for ONLY Earth? What if in another planet in another solar system, they DO NOT need water, or oxygen, before life can exist? Here on Earth, it has been discovered that some animals actually do exist in conditions of no oxygen. Read about it here. If this was discovered in our own home, then what about out there? There is the very real possibility that it is only on our own planet that life needs oxygen and water. It is possible that life on other planets need maybe methane to survive. What if it was actually hydrogen that some species on some other planets need to survive? Considering the fact that here on Earth, we are carbon based life forms and we need oxygen to survive, then maybe, just maybe, on some other planets, they are phosphorus based, or chlorine based, or fluorine based (just check your periodic table). If we look at this from this viewpoint, then we are bound to accept the fact that there may very possibly be life on other planets too. Intelligent life too, at that!
3. The third reason is rather simple. What if the only reason we have not discovered life on other worlds is simply because we’re not looking in the right places? It may be that we have been seeing alien life all around us, but have only been too blind to see it.

   If you know this concept called “expectancy theory”, then you know that sometimes when we are looking for something, which we already believed will not be there in the first place, we may end up not seeing that thing. The reason is simply because once we have believed and convinced our brain that it’s not there before looking for it, our brain then constructs the image of that thing not being there even when we are looking at it. This may actually be the reason why we’ve not seen alien life in the universe so far. Generally speaking, when science goes looking for signs of alien life in space, we usually expect to find something quite near to our own physiology. We expect the aliens we see to be at least humanoid in form. With this in mind, is it so surprising that when scientists do see something that does not at all fill our own expectancy of life in other planets, they simply agree that it is some chance of nature that has formed it and not living beings at all.

   In this regard, the movies and books may have actually been getting it right when they show us aliens that are simply too grotesque for human beings. If we agree with number 2 above, then we will also agree that different genetic and chemical makeup will bring about different physiological makeup as well. If you have watched Tom and Jerry’s trip to Mars, you will see that the aliens in that movie all look like mice, but that does not in any way reduce their intelligence.

4. Lastly, we may not have discovered alien life so far because scientists have been landing in the wrong place during interplanetary expeditions! Imagine, if an alien spaceship coming to Earth lands in the middle of the Sahara Desert, or the Arctic region (also a desert too, in case you don’t know), and then explored many kilometers north, south, east and west, what do you think will be their conclusion. You probably guessed it, that there is no life on Earth. The same may be true for scientists leaving our Earth too for other planets. They may have been landing in the wrong places, where there are no life or signs of life, and just as well concluded that there is no life, what with all the evidences as discussed in number two above.

So, having considered all the above stated reasons, I arrived at the conclusion that there is indeed life on other planets apart from our Earth. The only thing that I’m worried about is that I still be around when it is finally discovered.

And perhaps, aliens have been visiting Earth already, and as discussed in number 3, we simply have been too blind to see them, or like some conspiracy theorists will argue, they are simply being held hidden in Area 51, considering the many UFO sightings been yearly reported.

How Would Humanity React If We Really Found Aliens?

If aliens reach out to us, what would happen first?

It’s a question that has puzzled science-fiction fans and scientists alike for decades, and we already may have a hint of how people will react. On Oct. 30, 1938, a dramatized version of the 1898 H.G. Wells novel “The War of the Worlds” played on the CBS Radio system across the United States. The story details how Martians attacked Earth.

The radio broadcast caused a reaction when people mistook it for a real radio report, but accounts vary as to how much of a reaction there was. Some accounts describe nationwide panic, while others say not very many people actually listened to the broadcast. The promise of alien life stars in Episode 1 of “AMC Visionaries: James Cameron’s Story of Science Fiction,” which debuts on AMC tonight. Still, Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) researcher Duncan Forgan told Space.com the “War of the Worlds” broadcast may be instructive to think about as SETI scientists worldwide update their “first contact” protocols.

“If you pick the right science fiction — the hard science fiction — it’s placed in the best possible educated guesses about what will happen,” said Forgan, who is a research fellow at the University of St Andrews in Scotland. He explained that “hard” science fiction refers to science fiction that emphasizes accuracy (think the 2015 movie “The Martian,” for example).

If researchers find a signal today, Forgan said, one of the things they will have to manage is a public used to getting constant news updates on Twitter and other forms of social media. It’s something Forgan and his colleagues are already working on. The International Academy of Astronautics SETI Permanent Committee created a post-detection protocol in 1989 that was slightly updated in 2010; a new update is starting soon and should be finished in a few years, Forgan said.

Scientific work

For the most part, scientists assume alien contact would happen through a signal purposely sent toward Earth. The “acid test” is to make sure the signal is verified by multiple observatories, said SETI Institute senior astronomer Seth Shostak. “It would take a while to verify, and then the people who like to think about these matters say you would have a press conference and announce this to the world,” he said, but he added that wouldn’t work unless everyone in the project were sworn to secrecy. In this era of news leaks, he said that situation is very unlikely to hold.

So, scientists try instead to stick to a protocol that includes informing the public. The 2010 IAA protocol is only two pages and covers facets such as searching for a signal, handling evidence and what to do in the case of a confirmed detection.

If the evidence gets out to the public while the scientists are still analyzing the signal, Forgan said they could manage the public’s expectations by using something called the Rio Scale. It’s essentially a numeric value that represents the degree of likelihood that an alien contact is “real.” (Forgan added that the Rio Scale is also undergoing an update, and more should be coming out about it in May.)

If the aliens did arrive here, “first contact” protocols likely would be useless, because if they’re smart enough to show up physically, they could probably do anything else they like, according to Shostak. “Personally, I would leave town,” Shostak quipped. “I would get a rocket and get out of the way. I have no idea what they are here for.”

But there’s little need to worry. An “Independence Day” scenario of aliens blowing up important national buildings such as the White House is extremely unlikely, Forgan said, because interstellar travel is difficult. (This feeds into something called the Drake Equation, which considers where the aliens could be and helps show why we haven’t heard anything from them yet.)

Early SETI work

To find a signal, first we have to be listening for it. SETI “listening” is going on all over the world, and in fact, this has been happening for many decades. The first modern SETI experiment took place in 1960. Under Project Ozma, Cornell University astronomer Frank Drake pointed a radio telescope (located at Green Bank, West Virginia) at two stars called Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. He scanned at a frequency astronomers nickname “the water hole,” which is close to the frequency of light that’s given off by hydrogen and hydroxyl (one hydrogen atom bonded to one oxygen atom).

In 1977, The Ohio State University SETI’s program made international headlines after a project volunteer, Jerry Ehman, wrote, “Wow!” beside a strong signal a telescope there received. The Aug. 15, 1977, “Wow” signal was never repeated, however.

There have been many, many projects since then. As a taste: The SETI Institute was founded in 1984; while it may be the most famous of the SETI projects, there are many other independent SETIs at universities and institutions worldwide that have done work over the decades. One of the center’s major initiatives was Project Phoenix, which scanned nearby, sun-like stars. Currently, the SETI Institute, in collaboration with other institutes, is working on a concept called the Allen Telescope Array, which has dozens of radio dishes in northern California.

In 2015, the well-known physicist Stephen Hawking and many other researchers launched Breakthrough Listen, a project that will scan 1 million Milky Way stars and 100 nearby galaxies for extraterrestrial life.

Space-based SETI

While searches of alien messages aren’t ongoing in space, there have been efforts to communicate with any beings that may come across our spacecraft.

The Pioneer 10 and 11 probes flew by Jupiter (and in Pioneer 11’s case, Saturn) to eventually make their way out of the solar system. Before their launches in 1972 and 1973, respectively, a Pioneer plaque was mounted on board each spacecraft. It shows the form of the human body and where the Earth is located in the galaxy.

The twin Voyager probes launched in 1977 to examine the outer solar system. Voyager 2 reached interstellar space in 2012, while Voyager 1 is still at the edge of the solar system. Each of the spacecraft includes two golden records with sounds recorded on Earth, ranging from whale calls to music to the word “hello” in many languages. The record also has diagrams of the human body and where our solar system is located.

Scientists also transmitted a radio message from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico in 1974. The so-called Arecibo Message includes such things as the numbers 1 through 10; the atomic numbers of elements such as hydrogen and oxygen; information about DNA; and diagrams of a human body, the Earth and our solar system.

In a related field, the study of exoplanets has accelerated in recent years with the Kepler mission, which has found more than 2,000 confirmed exoplanets alone, as well as other observatories on the ground and in space. Scientists are now trying to characterize which of these planets may be the most habitable. Atmospheric studies and more detailed looks at star activity will be some of the activities scientists undertake with future telescopes, such as the James Webb Space Telescope, which will launch in 2020.

The Great Filter Hypothesis – Where Are All The Alien Civilizations?

It’s difficult to not be pessimistic when considering humanity’s future prospects. Many people would agree that it’s more likely than not that we’ll eventually do ourselves in. And in fact, some astrobiologists theorize that all advanced civilizations hit the same insurmountable developmental wall we have. They call it the Great Filter. It’s a notion that’s often invoked to explain why we’ve never been visited by extraterrestrials.

With no evidence of intelligent life other than ourselves, it appears that the process of starting with a star and ending with “Advanced Universe Exploring life” must be unlikely. This implies that at least one step in this process must be improbable. This list, while incomplete (I am sure), describes the following nine steps in an “evolutionary path” that results in the colonization of the observable universe:

1. The right star system (including organics and potentially habitable planets)
2. Reproductive molecules (e.g., RNA)
3. Simple (prokaryotic) single-cell life
4. Complex (eukaryotic) single-cell life
5. Sexual reproduction
6. Multi-cell life
7. Tool-using animals with big brains
8. Where we are now
9. Colonization explosion.

The Great Filter is the idea that although there is lots of matter, we observe no “Advanced Universe Exploring life”, like space-faring intelligences. So there is some filter through which almost all matter gets stuck before becoming expanding, lasting life. One question for those interested in the future of humankind is whether we have already ‘passed’ the bulk of the filter, or does it still lie ahead? For example, is it very unlikely matter will be able to form self-replicating units, but once it clears that hurdle becoming intelligent and going across the stars is highly likely; or is it getting to a humankind level of development is not that unlikely, but very few of those civilizations progress to expanding across the stars. If the latter, that motivates a concern for working out what the forthcoming filter(s) are, and trying to get past them.

According to the Great Filter hypothesis, at least one of these steps — if the list were complete — must be improbable. If it’s not an early step (i.e., in our past), then the implication is that the improbable step lies in our future and our prospects of reaching step 9 (interstellar colonization) are still bleak. If the past steps are likely, then many civilizations would have developed to the current level of the human species. However, none appear to have made it.

However, none appear to have made it to step 9, or the Milky Way would be full of colonies. So perhaps step 9 is the unlikely one, and the only thing that appears likely to keep us from step 9 is some sort of catastrophe or the resource exhaustion leading to rampant consumption of the available resources (like for example highly constrained energy resources). So by this argument, finding multicellular life on Mars (provided it evolved independently) would be bad news, since it would imply steps 2–6 are easy, and hence only 1, 7, 8 or 9 (or some unknown step) could be the big problem.

Although steps 1–8 have occurred on Earth, any one of these may be unlikely. If the first seven steps are necessary preconditions to calculating the likelihood (using the local environment) then an anthropically biased observer can infer nothing about the general probabilities from its (pre-determined) surroundings.

One concern is that advancing technology gives the possibility of civilizations wiping themselves out, and it is this that is the main component of the Great Filter – one we are going to be approaching soon. There are several candidates for which technology will be an existential threat (nanotechnology/’Grey goo’, nuclear holocaust, runaway climate change), but one that looms large is Artificial intelligence (AI), and trying to understand and mitigate the existential threat from AI is the main role of the Singularity Institute consider AI the main existential threat.

The concern with AI is something like this:

1. AI will soon greatly surpass us in intelligence in all domains.
2. If this happens, AI will rapidly supplant humans as the dominant force on planet earth.
3. Almost all AIs, even ones we create with the intent to be benevolent, will probably be unfriendly to human flourishing.

Or, you can think of it this way.

… AI leads to intelligence explosion, and because we don’t know how to give an AI benevolent goals, by default an intelligence explosion will optimize the world for accidentally disastrous ends. A controlled intelligence explosion, on the other hand, could optimize the world for good.

So, the aim of the game needs to be trying to work out how to control the future intelligence explosion so the vastly smarter-than-human AIs are ‘friendly’ (FAI) and make the world better for us, rather than unfriendly AIs (UFAI) which end up optimizing the world for something that sucks.

Where is everybody?

Yes, it is possible that the extreme difficulty and rarity of life’s origin or some early step, so that, other than here on Earth, all life in the universe is stuck before this early extremely hard step. But even if you find this the most likely outcome, surely given our ignorance you must also place a non-trivial probability on other possibilities. You must see a great filter as lying between initial planets and expanding civilizations, and wonder how far along that filter we are. In particular, you must estimate a substantial chance of “disaster”, i.e., something destroying our ability or inclination to make a visible use of the vast resources we see. (And this disaster can’t be an unfriendly super-AI because that should be visible.)

This made me realize that UFAI should also be counted as an ‘expanding lasting life’, and should be deemed unlikely by the Great Filter.

Alternatively, if the Great Filter still lies ahead of us, and a major component of this forthcoming filter is the threat from UFAI, we should expect to see the UFAIs of other civilizations spreading across the universe (or not see anything at all, because they would wipe us out to optimize for their unfriendly ends). That we do not observe it disconfirms this conjunction.

It also gives a stronger argument – as the UFAI is the ‘expanding life’ we do not see, the beliefs, ‘the Great Filter lies ahead’ and ‘UFAI is a major existential risk’ lie opposed to one another: the higher your credence in the filter being ahead, the lower your credence should be in UFAI being a major existential risk (as the many civilizations like ours that go on to get caught in the filter do not produce expanding UFAIs, so expanding UFAI cannot be the main x-risk); conversely, if you are confident that UFAI is the main existential risk, then you should think the bulk of the filter is behind us (as we don’t see any UFAIs, there cannot be many civilizations like ours in the first place, as we are quite likely to realize an expanding UFAI).

This is, of course, a variant on the Fermi paradox: We don’t see clues to widespread, large-scale engineering, and consequently, we must conclude that we’re alone. But the possibly flawed assumption here is when we say that highly visible construction projects are an inevitable outcome of intelligence. It could be that it’s the engineering of the small, rather than the large, that is inevitable. This follows from the laws of inertia (smaller machines are faster, and require less energy to function) as well as the speed of light (small computers have faster internal communication). It may be – and this is, of course, speculation – that advanced societies are building small technology and have little incentive or need to rearrange the stars in their neighbourhoods, for instance.

They may prefer to build nanobots instead of Dyson spheres. It should also be kept in mind that, as Arthur C. Clarke said, “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic“… I would like to add to the phrase “or be unrecognizable altogether“.

So, if the Great Filter is behind us, it would do much to explain the Fermi Paradox and the absence of extraterrestrial influence on the cosmos. Should that be the case, we may very well have a bright future ahead of us. The Milky Way Galaxy is literally ours for the taking, our future completely open-ended.

But before we jump to conclusions, it’s only fair to point out that we’re not out of the woods yet. There could very well be another Great Filter in the future — one just as stingy as the filters of our past. The universe, while giving the appearance of bio-friendliness, may, in reality, be extremely hostile to intelligent life.

Just about everyone has heard of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs), but what about Unidentified Future Objects? Alien encounters have been reported for decades. If there is one thing that the aliens are keen to tell us and have us believe, it’s that they originate on other worlds. But, are they being truthful with us? Might they really be time-travelers? In H.G. Wells’ classic novel of 1895, The Time Machine, an adventurous Londoner heads off into a dark future, where he clashes with cave-dwelling monsters, explores ruined cities and witnesses the final moments of life on Earth. In the 1968 movie, Planet of the Apes, Charlton Heston’s character, Taylor, an American astronaut, arrives on a nightmarish world run by a race of talking apes. Only at the film’s climax, as he stumbles upon the remains of the Statue of Liberty, does Taylor realize with horror that he has not set foot on some far-off planet, after all. Rather, he is home, 2,000 years in the future and after a worldwide holocaust has destroyed human civilization.

Then there is Michael J. Fox’s character, Marty McFly, who in the 1985 Hollywood comedy blockbuster, Back to the Future, travels through time to 1955. On doing so, he almost makes out with his then-teenage mom, comes perilously close to wiping out his own existence as a result of his time-traveling antics, and in single-handed fashion invents rock ‘n’ roll. And let’s not forget Bruce Willis in 1995’s 12 Monkeys. At least as far as mega-bucks movies and literary classics are concerned, the theme of time-travel is a spectacularly successful one. But what of the real world? Are time-travelers really among us? Is there a direct connection between the world of time-travel and that of UFOs?

Why is it that our “aliens” conveniently speak our languages? How is it that, with no trouble at all, they can they breathe our atmosphere? Why do they abduct us and use us in bizarre genetic experiments? Surely we are not physically and genetically compatible with creatures from faraway solar-systems? They assure us that we are indeed compatible. It all sounds far too convenient and carefully stage-managed. Maybe that’s because they are not from faraway worlds, after all. Perhaps, they are from right here, on Earth. Not our Earth (so to speak), but the Earth of the future; the distant future. An Earth that is in ruins and at a time when the Human Race is perilously close to extinction.

They travel into their distant past – our present – and engage in clandestine programs to reap DNA, cells, sperm and eggs as a means to try and save what is left of us, thousands of years from now. Keenly aware of the fact that the people of the 20^thand 21^st century held deep beliefs with regard to the concept of extraterrestrial life, they chose to adopt the guises of the alien things we believe in, as a means to camouflage their real identities. Could that be the shocking truth?

Formerly of the U.S. Air Force, and one of the key military players in the famous UFO encounter at Rendlesham Forest, Suffolk, England in December 1980, Sergeant Jim Penniston – in 1994 – underwent hypnotic regression, as part of an attempt to try and recall deeply buried data relative to what occurred to him during one of Britain’s closest encounters. Very interestingly, and while under hypnosis, Penniston stated that our presumed aliens are, in reality, visitors from a far-flung future. That future, Penniston added, is very dark, in infinitely deep trouble, polluted and where the Human Race is overwhelmingly blighted by reproductive problems. The answer to those same, massive problems, Penniston was told by the entities he met in the woods, is that they travel into the distant past – to our present day – to secure sperm, eggs and chromosomes, all as part of an effort to try and ensure the continuation of the severely waning Human Race of tomorrow.

“Time travel is not theoretically possible, for if it was they’d already be here telling us about it,” British physicist Professor Stephen Hawking famously said. And even if time-travel did one day become a possibility, it would be beset by major problems, claimed Hawking: “Suppose it were possible to go off in a rocket ship, and come back before you set off. What would stop you blowing up the rocket on its launch pad, or otherwise preventing you from setting out in the first place?”

Not everyone agrees with Hawking. One possible way of traveling through time is via what are known in physics as wormholes, a term coined in 1957 by theoretical physicist John Wheeler. The wormhole is basically a shortcut through both space and time; and although firm evidence for the existence of these so-called “time-tunnels” has not yet been firmly proven, they do not fall outside of the boundaries presented in Einstein’s theory of general relativity.

Then, there is the matter of the sinister Men in Black. They are perceived by UFO researchers as human-looking alien creatures or government agents, whose secret role it is to silence UFO witnesses, something that history has shown they are very good at. Maybe, though, the MIB are not the bad guys, after all. Perhaps they are “time-cops,” working to ensure that UFO witnesses don’t get too close to the truth – namely, the time-travel angle. After all, just about everything about the MIB is out of time. They almost always wear 1950s-era black suits. Their mode of transport – old-time Cadillac cars – is out of time, too. They have even asked witnesses, on more than a few occasions: “What time is it?”

Maybe they’re actually asking what year they’re in. Or even which century. Perhaps, in the distant future, little is known of our time. Maybe we destroyed ourselves and, as a consequence, the people of the future are tasked with repairing the planet and doing their utmost to save what is left of our species. Possibly, they have limited knowledge of our culture and even our fashions, apart from what they know from the pages of aging, crumbling old magazines from the 1950s. So, they adopt the attire they assume will allow them to blend in with the people of the 21^st century, when, in reality, it’s the exact opposite. The MIB stand out like a sore thumb. Or, like a man out of time.

Paranormal researcher Joshua P. Warren comments on this link between time-travel and the Men in Black: “It could be that the Men in Black follow all this UFO stuff around; that’s their job. Not that they are causing these things to happen, but they’re alerted to it when there’s a dangerous timeline issue that needs to be corrected. They’re not necessarily the bad-guys at all; they might be doing damage control, and maybe that includes warning and silencing witnesses to protect the time-travel secret. They might be weird, and they might look weird, but their overall mission may be just to keep order and protect the timelines.”

Of course, we need to remain grounded on all of this. So far, there is no definitive proof whatsoever that we have (or have ever had) time-travelers in our midst. And, there’s no evidence that UFOs are really time-machines. So, in other words, everything is very much theoretical and speculative – and just about nothing else. But, it doesn’t hurt to speculate!

Britain’s Area 51 EXPOSED? Group chased by ‘men in black’ after entering UFO centre

FOOTAGE has emerged of the moment a group of blokes were confronted by authorities after entering a site known as Britain’s Area 51.

RAF Rudloe Manor in Bath gained its nickname after secret files were released at the National Archives indicating the site was the centre for UFO investigations in the 1950s.

It shows the four blokes sneaking around the buildings and capturing various bizarre footage. 

But they suddenly become spooked as they hear people approaching them.

Sirens then begin to ring out in the background as the four men rush to get in their car. 

And as they drive off, one of the men suggest they are being followed by government officials.

One of them states: “We are currently being tailed by an unmarked police car, they’ve been following us for 15 minutes.”

Before someone else in the car suggests: “It's men in black.”

Their car is finally pulled over, for what they are told is a routine check, after a vehicle with the same registration had been spotted in London.

LUX: THE PARASITIC ALIEN PRESENT ON OUR PLANET

Lux: The parasitic alien present on our planet

According to several researchers, the Lux also known as The Being of Light is an otherworldly being present on our earth that does not need a physical body to enter and move in our world. This being, baptized with the name of Lux, has a small form, made of light.

As ancient scriptures teach us, human beings are made up of 4 elements: body, mind, spirit and soul. In our case, the body acts as a container for the other three elements. But the Lux is formed only by two elements: mind and spirit.

Lux: The parasitic alien present on our planet

Lux is a metamorphic plasma being that parasites about 80% of the population of our planet. The Lux comes from nebulous areas of our Galaxy (impossible for us to determine location) where they find the necessary elements (matter and antimatter) whose interaction is able to generate intelligent life forms without a physical body.

THE EXISTENCE AND THE BIRTH OF THE LUX

To explain the existence of Lux , we must take a step back and understand some of the dynamics of our Universe, still in many ways, completely unknown. Around the 60s of the twentieth century the Nobel Prize in physics in 1970 Hannes Alfven theorized the cosmology of plasma. An expert in the field of magnetodynamics, Alfven argued that magnetic fields had and played a fundamental role in the composition of cosmic structures.

It was he who proved that the Milky Way had a magnetic field that was not the mere sum of the stellar ones and hypothesized that such a galactic magnetic field was due to interstellar plasma motions. The Nobel Prize winner hypothesized that intergalactic plasma also has, with its motions, the ability to generate strong magnetic fields able to overlap with the action of gravity. He also thought that there were huge clashes between matter and antimatter, giving rise to multitudes of mini Big Bang. The common theories on the Universe are based on weak forces (magnetic force + gravitational force) and on the electrical neutrality of matter in terrestrial laboratories, but which can not be applied in the space in which the “Plasma” dominates, ie the 4th state of the matter, where the other 3 are gaseous, liquid and solid.

So this means that the Plasma has as main property that of transporting the electric current, forming “filaments” of energy that follow the lines of the magnetic fields, in fact in the cosmos these filaments are everywhere present. Summing up: in physics and chemistry, a Plasma is an ionized gas, consisting of a set of electrons and ions, globally neutral, but being made up of charged particles, the overall motions of the Plasma particles are largely due to the long range that come to create, and that tend to keep the plasma neutral. As such, Plasma is considered as the fourth state of matter, which is distinguished from solid, liquid and gas. The free electrical charges mean that Plasma is a good conductor of electricity, and that it responds strongly to electromagnetic fields.

From a higher perspective, this Alien corresponds to an attempt at the last minute of the Black Demiurge to create an alternative life base with the ability to operate with one’s own will and independence in our Universe. As if it were a cancer, the Lux is consumed in an unstoppable way to exhaust all the available energy at hand. These operations of true energetic drainage are obtained by means of different modes and formulas of parasite or interference, both on the human body and on the extraterrestrial animal and body.

THE LUX AND THE MAN

Once you realize that the matter that generates them has a limit and is unable to keep them alive forever, since once they were exhausted they would also end up existing, they went in search of other sources of alternative energy.

By dividing one’s being from a giant Lux-Mother to smaller, much more numerous and able to take on the most varied forms, they have spread everywhere, in search of worlds in which to absorb as much energy as possible, becoming at the same time same a metastasis. First they began their work of “vampirism” on animal and plant forms present in many planets scattered in the galaxy, then just met intelligence and other sentient forms like them, they gave life to a real parasitic, both subtle and consenting, with the host body.

In this long wandering, as far as the Lux of our galaxy is concerned, millions of years ago they came into contact with the Sauroidi race, which had long since settled among the planets of the stars of the Orion belt.

At first this vampirism began in a subtle and silent way, then when the Sauroidi evolved so much that they arrived to discover their presence, an exchange of information began, up to mutual mutual aid. The Sauroids needed to acquire more knowledge of the created and of the Universe, feeding their voracity of conquest thanks to a greater knowledge, while the Lux found in it an impressive force and a container to live and in which it would be able to draw a lot of energy, albeit for a limited time (here is born the myth of the “Fruit of Knowledge” of which the Serpents are the carriers and who will then also donate to the current Man, or the “knowledge of the Lux”). Writing what happened next would be too long and complicated and I will do it elsewhere,

Found Man on a wonderful planet, Eden or the Earth, (the First Man or the Giants of whom I speak in the Archeogenesis) but realizing that it was not possible to subject him to their will, they decided in common accord with other alien races that in the meantime had joined the project, to create a smaller container, able to contain that energy and then exploit it. Here the current human being appears on the scene, a synthesis of a genetic operation that saw the unification of the alien genome, with that of the First Man and the monkeys. 

All this part is deepened in several parallel studies and analogous to this, but from this reconstruction it is possible to draw many food for thought. The Sauroidi, which in the mythology are the Snakes, grant to man in the Garden of Eden, the “Fruit of Knowledge”, in reality this fruit is what they have been carrying within for a long time, the “knowledge of the Lux”, this entity of light generated by the same matter of which the stars, the Universe and the creators are formed. But Lux in reality, was not and is not only an entity of Light able to know in depth the secrets of the cosmos, but also an intelligent entity that, aware of its mortality, is able to make any gesture and stratagem to survive. and because his very existence is not lost.

For millions of years, Lux has kept the entire humanity subjugated to its will, creating a false mysticism which, acting on the partly animal and suggestible side of man, has been able to direct it towards a certain objective.

He made it possible to spread and multiply the men on the planet, contributing to the development of the various races, then from them were born the countless cultures, the first peoples, the first kingdoms, the first nations, the empires, but above all the religions. On religion he has conducted an intense and systematic work, because by acting on the human psyche, inclined to mysticism, he was able to manipulate the mass of Humans that slowly increased over the millennia; passing his “Fruit of Knowledge” as a divine gift of which Man had become the only universal bearer.

For this reason the parasitic modes of the Lux are ambivalent, they put in doubt, they keep in a continuous state of doubling the man who hosts him, gratifies him and at the same time submerges him with the sense of guilt, because it is the internal divine voice that speaks to you and makes you understand what is right or wrong. His being a vampire is all-encompassing, because the more he leads man in a millennial game of manipulation, the more he feeds on his experiences and his inexhaustible energy source. It continually draws energy from Humans alone endowed with Mind and Spirit, creating contrasts, misunderstandings and wars, and withdraws energy from Humans endowed with Soul, because they are the creatives and those who possess the true divine spark.

A CURIOSITY:

The answer to that question is “No!” The reason I bring the matter up is because it’s being discussed right now at Rich Reynolds’ blog. It’s important to note that the terms “M.I.B” and “Men in Black” were created years ago to describe those sinister characters who turn up at the homes of UFO witnesses and terrorize them into silence. Today, the fact is that – unlike in the early days of Ufology – those terms are far more flexible than they were decades ago. Yes, the Men in Black are still calling on people and intimidating them. But, while the black suit is still dominating, it’s certainly not alone. Even the MIB, it seems, need a change in style now and again.

Back in the 1960s, when they weren’t always wearing black suits and black fedoras, the MIB were dressing in military uniforms, which is a far cry from the image that most people have of these creepy figures. Even U.S. Air Force personnel have acknowledged that fact. When John Keel’s research into the Mothman phenomenon of Point Pleasant, West Virginia was at its height in 1967, he came across more than a few cases of MIB. But, Keel was also given other accounts of strange characters who scared the you-know-what out of witnesses to UFO activity. They acted like the MIB, some of them looked weird – just like the MIB, too. But, they had the military uniform, rather than the suit.

In early ’67, Keel was able to speak to a Colonel George P. Freeman about this strange development. Freeman said: “Mysterious men dressed in Air Force uniforms or bearing impressive credentials from government agencies have been silencing UFO witnesses. We have checked a number of these cases, and these men are not connected to the Air Force in any way. We haven’t been able to find out anything about these men. By posing as Air Force officers and government agents, they are committing a Federal offense. We would sure like to catch one – unfortunately the trail is always too cold by the time we hear about these cases, but we are still trying.”

So, what we have here are cases of what appear to involve the Men in Black – except that they’re not dressed in black. I have a handful of cases of another kind of MIB: Men in Brown. They look just like the Men in Black. That’s to say they are pale, skinny and menacing. Their modus operandi is just the same: they warn, they threaten, and they give people nightmares. But, there’s not a black suit in sight. Typically, the suit is of a very dark brown. I have one case of a light-brown suit, this one from Warminster, England in the 1960s and after the witness encountered a Flying Saucer-type UFO, late one night. I have several cases of MIB wearing black suits, but also wearing largely unheard of (a) striped ties and (b) fedoras with white bands.

Then, there is the matter of the Men in White. In my 2015 book, Men in Black, Rich Reynolds said: “The Men in Black, whom Nick Redfern has documented rather fully in his book, The Real Men in Black, have been with mankind for a lot longer than surmised. They ensued right after the dawn of civilization, if The Hebrew Bible (the Old Testament) and various myths have any reportorial accuracy. The modern-day MIB phenomenon began with Gray Barker’s introduction of them in his 1956 book, They Knew Too Much About Flying Saucers. However, those versed in early religious and mythological tales know that Men in Black types have pounced on humanity well before 1956. The difference, which seems to have thrown off MIB enthusiasts, is that those early ‘men’ were garbed in white; Men in White, as it were. The Bible is replete with such encounters: Genesis 18/19: Verses 1 through 29 (in Chapter 19) recounts the visitation of God and/or his angels, telling Abraham about a pending birth and the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah.”

So, what we have here is a phenomenon that, for Ufologists, began with the MIB – and meaning quite literally strange characters in black and nothing else. Today, however, things have changed a bit. The term now encompasses entities that are MIB-like, but with certain, significant differences when it comes to their clothing. Should those terms “Men in Black” and “M.I.B.” be phased out, and replaced by something that has a broader scope and meaning? Any thoughts on what such a title should be?

IN 1974 CARL SAGAN SENT THIS MESSAGE INTO SPACE: IN 2001 WE RECEIVED THIS RESPONSE

In 1974, a broadcast (known as the “Arecibo” message) put together by Carl Sagan and colleagues was sent into space via radio waves at a special ceremony to celebrate the remodelling of the Arecibo radio telescope in Puerto Rico. It was the most powerful broadcast ever deliberately beamed out into space. The message was directed at a star cluster sitting approximately 25,000 light years away, and consisted of a pictorial message. The radio signal depicted our planet’s location in our solar system, the core principles of our math and science, and the NASA antenna used to transmit the signal, in the hopes that it would be interpreted by an extraterrestrial intelligence. The message also included details about human beings, such as our physical appearance and DNA code. The signal was a million times stronger than the typical TV transmission. 27 years later in 2001, the crop circle phenomenon gained some well deserved attention when a pattern in the form of a response to the 1974 broadcast appeared right next to Britain’s largest telescope, the Chilbolton, and observatory, home to the world’s largest fully steerable meteorological radar. It’s one of the most amazing crop circles to ever appear, regardless of whether you believe it was done by human beings or an extraterrestrial intelligence

Above is a picture of what seems to be the response to the message sent out in 1974 by NASA (see cover photo). Only this time, the message describes a different solar system, an image of the sender (just like on the original NASA message), non-human DNA, and a microwave antenna, instead of the radio-wave antenna that was depicted in ours.

A simple Google search would suffice if you want to see more pictures. It was written off as a hoax, like most crop circles are within the mainstream.

The face you see there appeared three days before the rectangular image. The face represented a new technique in crop circle generation, a screen technique that is also used for printing a face on a piece of paper.

What’s also interesting to note is the fact that the microwave antenna signal in this crop circle also appeared a year earlier in the exact same field. You can view an image of that one here.

The Arecibo message sent out into space was in Binary, and I thought it would be fitting to source a declassified NSA (National Security Agency) document titled “Key To The Extraterrestrial Messages.” This document reveals that a series of 29 messages from outer space was received, which also appears to be in some binary form. You can view that document here. The title of the document alone is quite shocking given the fact that it comes straight from the NSA.

Some Things You Might Not Know About Crop Circles

Not many people are aware of the fact that the crop circle phenomenon is a very real one. They happen all over the world and there have been reports of them for decades. Some of these designs are so complex and elaborate that they’ve completely baffled onlookers, researchers, and scientists alike. Not only that, many of the designs are often electrostatically charged, usually with the nodes of some of the plant stalks blasted out on one side. Some of them are also littered with strange magnetic particles. This effect has been replicated by highly localized microwave heating, which causes water inside the plants to vaporize and dislodge, thus flopping the stock completely over to one side.

This fact has had some physicists publish work on the phenomenon, concluding that the perpetrators (who have never been caught in the act of making a crop circle, anywhere) are using GPS devices, lasers, and microwaves to create these astonishing geometric forms (works of art). (source)

Nasa to land spacecraft on plain of Mars where online oddballs saw an ‘alien city’ and ‘crashed UFO’

Nasa is preparing to send a robotic craft on a mission to Mars, where it will drill deep into the crust of the Red Planet and measure ‘Mars-quakes’ for the first time.

The InSight probe will zoom into the heavens just before dawn on Saturday aboard a beefy, mega powerful 19-storey-high Atlas 5 rocket.

Nasa launches spacecraft bound for Mars Scientists want to explore the rumblings of Mars in a bid to uncover the secrets of its ancient history.

But the wild minds of the internet are likely to be interested in the fact it will land in a place where alien hunters claim to have spotted a ‘crashed UFO’ and an ‘extraterrestrial city’.

It will touch down on a flat, smooth plain close to the planet’s equator called the Elysium Planitia.

Once settled, the solar-powered InSight will spend one Martian year (two Earth years) plumbing the depths of the planet’s interior for clues to how Mars took form and, by extension, how the Earth and other rocky planets came into being.

‘The science we want to do with this mission is really the science of understanding the early solar system,’ said Bruce Banerdt, InSight principal investigator.

Alien hunters previously claimed to have seen ‘walled cities’ on the Elysium Planitia as well a ‘crashed UFO’.

But it turns out the truth about this Martian plain could be wilder than the fiction.

The European Space Agency discovered signs of a huge ‘frozen ocean’ that’s about the same size as the North Sea.

‘The water that formed the sea appears to have originated beneath the surface of Mars, and to have come out through a series of fractures known as the Cerberus Fossae, from where it flowed in a catastrophic flood,’ ESA wrote in 2005.

‘It collected in a vast area about 800 kilometres long and 900 kilometres wide with a depth of about 45 metres. As the water started to freeze, floating pack ice broke up into rafts. These became later covered in ash and dust from volcanic eruptions in the region.’

InSight will complete its 301 million mile journey to Mars in about six months time.

 While Earth’s tectonics and other forces have erased most evidence of its early history, much of Mars – about one-third the size of Earth – is believed to have remained relatively static for more than 3 billion years, creating a geologic time machine for scientists.

InSight’s primary instrument is a French-built seismometer, a device designed to detect the slightest ground motion from marsquakes, even those on the opposite side of the planet.

Scientists expect to see a dozen to 100 marsquakes over the course of the mission, producing data that will help them deduce the depth, density and composition of the planet’s core, the rocky mantle surrounding it and the outermost layer, the crust.

InSight is not the first attempt to measure Martian seismic activity. The Viking probes of the mid-1970s were equipped with seismometers, too, but they were bolted to the top of the landers, which swayed in Martian winds on legs built with shock absorbers.

Banerdt joked: ‘We didn’t do seismology on Mars – we did it 3 feet above Mars.’

A new space force could be created in the US to fight the extraterrestrial wars of the future, President Donald Trump has claimed.

Legislators and military experts have envisioned a possibility of war in space for at least the past several decades.

Until recently, that issue has been cast aside as other more pressing matters - including war and terrorism - have taken centre stage.

Now, addressing the prospect of an armed encounter above the Earth appears to be an increasing priority for the world's super powers.

Russia and China are already claimed to be developing armaments that can strike in space, including missiles that can target satellites.  

Trump's comments suggest America is prioritising its own offensive and defensive capabilities, to ensure its supremacy in the theatre of space conflict.

Previously revealed US space weapons include the X-37B Orbital Test Vehicle and hypersonic missiles under development that could be used to strike objects in orbit.

President Trump made the comments while presenting the annual Commander-in-Chief's Trophy to the US Army's Black Knights football team at the White House.

During his speech, the Trump said that his administration is 'seriously thinking' about creating a space force as part of his efforts to build up the nation's military.

Trump listed the 'five proud branches of the United States Armed Forces: Army, Navy, Marines, Air Force and the Coast Guard'.

According to reports in The Times, he paused for a moment before adding: 'And we're actually thinking of a sixth, and that would be the Space Force. Does that make sense?

'Because we're getting very big in space, both militarily and for other reasons. And we are seriously thinking of the Space Force.'

This is not the first time that Trump has raised the prospect of a new Space Force, telling a crowd of Marines in March he may want to start one.

WHAT IS THE MYSTERIOUS X-37B ORBITAL TEST VEHICLE? 

The US Air Force's unmanned X-37B space plane has flown a number of secret missions to date.

Each time it has carried a mystery payload on long-duration flights in Earth orbit.

The spacecraft looks similar to Nasa's space shuttle but is much smaller. The X-37B is about 29ft (8.8m) long and 9.5ft (2.9 m) tall.

Like a shuttle, X-37B is blasted into orbit by a rocket. However, it lands using a runway like a normal aircraft. The X-37B is too small to carry people onboard, but does have a cargo bay similar to that of a pickup truck, which is just large enough to carry a small satellite

It has a wingspan of just less than 15ft (4.6 m). At launch, it weighs 11,000lbs (4,990kg).

The craft is taken into orbit on a rocket but lands like the space shuttle by gliding down to Earth.

Its main mission payload is a mystery, although Nasa has revealed it has a hauled a number of materials experiments aboard into space.

Positioned in front of a Marine F/A-18 Hornet, Trump called space a 'war-fighting domain', and talked up both its military importance and the merits of private ventures.

'Space is a war-fighting domain just like the land, air, and sea,' he said on March 23, as he spoke to Marine Fighter Attack Squadron 232, nicknamed the Red Devils, at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

'We may even have a Space Force, develop another one – Space Force,' Trump added. 'We have the Air Force, you'll have the Space Force.'

In April, a new report outlined concerns that a space war may be approaching faster than many anticipated and that world leaders are woefully unprepared.

WHAT ARE HYPERSONIC MISSILES AND HOW DO THEY WORK?

Aircraft and missiles are said to be hypersonic once they exceed speeds of Mach 5 and above, or five times the speed of sound.

This occurs at 1,715 metres per second (3,836mph / 6,174kmh).

The latest class of hypersonic missiles would be smaller, guided and designed to carry conventional explosives for time-sensitive, rapid response in theatre operations. 

There are two kinds of approaches to solving the hypersonic challenge in missiles: 'scramjet' and 'boost glide.' 

The air-breathing scramjet relies on high speed for its power.

As it accelerates, more air and fuel is pushed into the engine, allowing it to accelerate even more - to hypersonic speeds.

The boost glide model rides a reentry vehicle to extremely high altitudes, where it skips across the Earth's upper atmosphere.

Traditional ballistic missiles already travel at hypersonic speeds.

Built to carry nuclear and conventional warheads, these weapons are capable of reaching outer space in the course of their flights, but they can't manoeuvre.

The US Department of Defense warned that the US isn't ready for a space war, while Russia and China have developed technologies that could destroy satellites that are crucial for many everyday tasks, ranging from ATMs to apps like Uber Eats.

The satellites are also used for reconnaissance and guiding precision bombs, missiles and drones. 

'We are now approaching a point where "Star Wars" is not just a movie,' Steve Isakowitz, CEO of think tank Aerospace Corp, told Politico at the time. 

The Pentagon has already set aside billions to 'harden' its defences against anti-satellite weapons and training troops to survive in space.

Congress also floated the idea last year of a new 'Space Corps', set to be modelled after the Marines.

It would be tasked with keeping the US ahead of its superpower rivals in the event of a war.

The idea of creating the first new branch to the US military in 70 years encountered significant resistance, however, and was scrapped in December 2017. 

Alleged restriction of funds to the other armed forces squashed the idea. 

US Air Force chief, General David Goldfein, has also claimed space warfare is a real possibility 'within a matter of years'.

The US will need new tools, specialist training and billions of dollars in funding to prepare for combat in orbit, he has said.

 General Goldfein made the comments while speaking at the Air Force Association's 34th annual Air Warfare Symposium and Technology Exposition in Orlando in February.

'[It's] time for us as a service, regardless of speciality badge, to embrace space superiority with the same passion and sense of ownership as we apply to air superiority today,' General Goldfein said at the time. 

General Goldfein argues that the US Air Force is best placed to protect American interests in space.

He added: 'I believe we're going to be fighting from space in a matter of years.

'We are the service that must lead joint war fighting in this new contested domain. This is what the nation demands.'

HOW CAN WE STOP SPACE WARS?

A group of more than 40 international experts are conducting a multi-year research project that will culminate in a Manual on International Law Applicable to Military Uses of Outer Space.

MILAMOS Project is to ensure space activities are conducted in accordance with the rule of law.

This will involve a consideration of the existing international rules on outer space.

It will also involve integration with international humanitarian law and the rules prohibiting the use of force.

The drafting of the rules will involve many meetings, heated discussions and compromises.

It is envisaged that at the end of the project the applicable rules will be agreed on the basis of consensus.

The MILAMOS Project is not an effort to condone warfare in outer space.

On the contrary, it seeks to prevent armed conflict and minimise the devastating impact that space technology and military operations may have on the long-term and peaceful use of outer space. 

The Outer Space Treaty, which was signed in 1967, was agreed through the United Nations, and today it remains as the 'constitution' of outer space.

The space treaty states that celestial territory is not subject to 'national appropriation' – in other words, no country can lay claim to them. 

In the fifty years the treaty has existed, it has yet to be violated.
