For just about as long as there has been talk of UFOs and aliens, there has been that of these entities whisking people away for mysterious purposes. One of the weirder features of the alien abduction phenomenon are those cases in which some sort of physical evidence has been left behind on or in the bodies of the victims, and this can take many forms. Everything from burns, to strange lesions or rashes, to unidentifiable hairlessness, to myriad unexplained physical symptoms of all varieties have been seen in the alleged victims of UFO abductions, but some of the most remarkable of all are those instances in which some sort of foreign object has been left behind within the body of the abductee for purposes unknown. They are called “alien implants,” and can be simply small pieces of metal, strange wires, or other more sophisticated constructs like tubes or something akin to computer chips. Such implants have long been seen as very bizarre and fringe even within the UFO field, but there have been some seemingly very reliable witnesses to the phenomenon, and one of these must certainly be the surgeon who specialized in removing these outlandish otherworldly devices.

Roger Krevin Leir started out as a well-respected podiatric surgeon from California, who was not always known for his involvement with aliens and UFOs. He gradually picked up an interest in Ufology over the years and became a member of his local chapter of the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), attending conferences, but at the time is was more a hobby than anything else. It was at one conference in particular that his life would be changed forever. In 1995, Leit attended a MUFON conference and was presented the X-rays of a woman who claimed to have been abducted by aliens. The X-rays were strange, and since Leir was a doctor they were shown to him to see what he thought. They appeared to show some sort of small metal objects embedded within her, and he went about having them surgically removed out of sheer curiosity.

What he found was that the objects were two tiny metal shards that when analyzed by a laboratory showed them to be composed of aluminum and a type of iron typically found in meteorites. There could be found no traces of scars to show a point of insertion, nor was there any inflammatory tissue or rejection reaction by the body to these foreign objects. How did these objects get there and what were they? Leir was perplexed, and when he removed similar objects from a second patient he knew that there was something very strange going on. He decided to devote his time to studying this bizarre phenomenon, and would open a practice especially for this purpose, as well as a nonprofit research organization dedicated to it, called A&S Research, even hiring a dentist, a radiologist and a general surgeon to be a part of his team. What he would find over the course of at least 17 such implant extractions over his career would open his eyes to a whole new, bizarre world.

According to Leir, these implants really ran the range of strangeness. Some were composed of strange metals or elements, including Rare Earth Metals such U-236, as well as a single isotope of Uranium existing by itself, a very rare element known as Iridium, alloys with non-terrestrial isotopic ratios suggesting they came from space, and other strange anomalies. Implants would sometimes demonstrate odd qualities such as unknown odd crystalline structures and advanced constructs such as carbon nano tubes, carbon nano strands and carbon nano fibers, as well as an oily hard outer covering that seemed to prevent the body from rejecting them. The implants often displayed unusual magnetic properties, and some were claimed to emit radio waves of “deep space frequencies” in the FM band, as well as electromagnetic fields in excess of ten milligauss, with some implants continuing to transmit even after removal. There was never any visible point of entry into the body, and Leir claimed that these implants would sometimes move during surgery, as if trying to avoid being removed. The implants also had a high resistance to ordinary cutting techniques such as metallic sawing, or severing with a cutting instrument, forcing Leir to resort to cutting them with lasers at times. Some cases were particularly odd, such as one in which the implant broke and then reassembled itself after removal. Leir would write of this outlandish case in an article in X News Magazine as follows:

Case number 15 involved a male patient who was married with several young children and a resident of Southern California. He had a long history of abductions and they involved both his wife and family. One morning he awoke with pain in a toe and several small dots of blood on the bed sheet. This had occurred during the night and he made an appointment the following day with me in my office, as an ordinary foot patient. He withheld the fact that he was an abductee. He finally related to me the story about his last nights incident and confessed he had seen me on television. After examination I became suspicious that he did have a foreign body in his toe and suggested an x-ray. At the time there were no wounds or signs of blood. The x-rays proved positive for a metallic foreign body and because of his pain, it was recommended that it be removed. On his follow up visit he told me about his many abduction experiences and why he chose me as his specialist. The patient was given a copy of our extensive questionnaire and was told to fill it out and return them to me. Following that his surgery was scheduled.

The following is a partial list of unusual events associated with his surgery: 1. All of our surgeries are performed with the use of an X-ray device called a C Arm. This allows the surgeon to see the object on two television screens and we can visualize the instruments we are using to remove it while they are inside the body. This was the first object that broke into several smaller pieces during the process of removal. Each piece was placed on surgical gauze and then transferred into the container filled with the patient’s own blood serum. We had removed all the pieces except for one final piece. When we revisited the TV screens we noticed the final segment that was left was gone. After an adequate time of searching for it we simply gave up because it was not there and had simply vanished. 2. After three days went by, I reexamined the container holding the individual segments of the object and noticed they were all lined up in a straight line on the bottom of the container. I re-sealed the container and shook them up, placed the container on a table and waited about 15 minutes. Reexamination was shocking as they had again re-assembled themselves in the order they were in the x-ray. I called our camera operator. He came and we filmed this several times. We have no explanation for this metallic behavior and can only conclude that the alloys were some kind of memory metal.

Making it even odder still was that in some cases the implants were estimated to have been within the subject for decades, meaning they predated any of the technology behind them should have been possible, and all of this convinced Leir that these were devices that had been planted there within the body by extraterrestrials for inscrutable purposes. His main theory as to their purpose was that they were possibly used for tracking people or monitoring physical changes, but it was anyone’s guess. He was very aware that his work was drawing some amount of criticism and skepticism, but he would claim that he had pursued his finding through the most stringent scientific methods. Leir would say of his surgeries and analyses:

To date our research team through our non profit, research organization, A&S Research has performed 17 surgeries for removal of objects from alleged alien abductees suspected of being alien implants. The implants have undergone rigorous examinations by both biological and metallurgical scientists associated with some of the world’s most prestigious laboratories such as Los Alamos National Labs, New Mexico Tech, University of Toronto, York University, Southwest Laboratories, Seal Laboratories and numerous others with the same validation. The discoveries have been both earth shattering and prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that these objects are non-terrestrial in origin and have been placed in humans all over the world by advanced species for reasons we still do not understand. It is my opinion that someone, or some entity, from somewhere else, is implanting these devices into human beings so that they can possibly monitor genetic changes which are occurring in the human body.

Leir would go on to write several books on the subject, including his hot-selling The Aliens and the Scalpel and Casebook: Alien Implants, as well as numerous articles, and he would appear in countless radio and television shows, cementing his place as a revolutionary pioneer into the phenomenon of alien implants within the UFO community. He also was the subject of the documentary Patient Seventeen, by investigative filmmaker Jeremy Corbell, who filmed one of Leir’s actual surgeries to remove an implant from a man’s thigh. The implant was then sent to be analyzed, although the results have remained inconclusive as to what the device is. Corbell, who went in skeptical and now has an open mind, has said of his experience with Leir:

I told Dr. Leir that I would film his surgery, but if he was lying, bending the truth or trying to deceive the public in any way by altering his results, that I was going to out him.  I asked him if he was sure that he wanted me to film his work, and he said, ‘Yes, Jeremy. I’ve been doing this for more than two decades, and there’s something to this!’ I don’t think belief should play a role here at all. I might be sitting on the most astounding physical evidence of an off-world, non-terrestrial nanotechnological device from an advanced Alien intelligence…or not. But you can be sure that I’m going to find out. I owe that to Patient Seventeen and I owe that to Dr. Leir.

Of course, with such amazing claims there are also plenty of skeptics, both within the medical field and Ufology. The main skeptical argument is that these are merely ordinary objects such as pieces of metal or shards of glass that have gotten lodged with the body in a way similar to splinters, or even simply disconnected collections of fat cells., and Leir has also been criticized for being reluctant to allow other independent doctors to do their own analyses of the objects in question. Also damning is a 1999 program called Penn & Teller: Bullshit!, which found that Leir had at one point been put on probation for 3 years by the California Board of Podiatric Medicine for “repeated acts of negligence.” Sadly, Leir passed away in 2014 at the age of 79 shortly after Patient Seventeen wrapped filming, taking whatever secrets he had to the grave with him. We are left to ask whether Roger Leir was a fraud or for real, and what his alleged findings mean. What did he find in these patients, if anything? If these really are what he claimed they were, then what are they for, and who put them there? Whatever the case may be, the phenomenon of alien implants has not gone away, and there continue to be those who claim to have these devices lodged within them. What does it all mean? We may never know for sure.

In my previous article here at Mysterious Universe – which was on the subject of my new book, The Martians: Evidence of Life on the Red Planet – I made a brief reference to what may very well have been nothing less than life on Mars. And not in the distant past, but just a handful of years ago. I thought that today I would expand on this admittedly strange story as it is – without any shadow of a doubt – undeniably weird. Let us take a careful look at the story and the relevant photo that comes with it. It has become known as the “Face-Hugger photograph.” And there is a very good reason as to why the picture was given that particular name. Taken in July 2015 by NASA’s Curiosity Rover, the photo appears to show nothing less than a strange, multi-legged creature that looks astonishingly like the monstrous face-invading creatures that appeared in the phenomenally successful series of Alien movies. For those who may not know, they starred Sigourney Weaver as Warrant Officer Ellen Ripley – and they reaped in an incredible amount of dollars. When the story broke wide open in early August 2015, the headlines were predictably sensational. The U.K.’s Metro newspaper ran with the story and titled their feature as follows: “Crab-like alien ‘facehugger’ is seen crawling out of a cave on Mars.”

The same Metro article included the words of Seth Shostak, a skeptic when it comes to the matter of life on Mars, and the Senior Astronomer and Director of the Center for SETI Research; “SETI” standing for “search for extraterrestrial intelligence.” Shostak said of the strange looking thing and other allegedly anomalous photos that reach him from time to time: “Those that send them to me are generally quite excited, as they claim that these frequently resemble something you wouldn’t expect to find on the rusty, dusty surface of the Red Plane. It’s usually some sort of animal, but occasionally even weirder objects such as automobile parts. Maybe they think there are cars on Mars.” On the other side of the coin were the words of Scott Waring who, at UFO Sightings Daily, said that: “It does appear alive. It may be a crab-like animal, or it also may be a plant. This object has many arms and one of them goes to the left of the picture a very long ways. That arm is longer than all others. Plant or animal it really doesn’t matter. The significance of this is that it shows signs that it is alive. That is everything, but not to NASA.”

And, that’s pretty much how the online debate went on: for the world of science the face-hugger was nothing but a spectacular example of pareidolia. UFO seekers and conspiracy theorists, however, said otherwise. They suggested that what looked like an eerie, creepy animal was exactly that – an eerie, creepy animal on a faraway world. That it appeared to be in the opening to a small cave and maneuvering up (or, possibly, scuttling down to the ground) the cave wall with its multiple limbs only seemed to add to the theory that NASA had inadvertently captured on camera a genuine Martian animal – and a very hair-raising one, too! In my view, the spidery, crab-like animal is not a case of the eye seeing what it sorely wants to see. And, the story isn’t quite over. In my The Martians book I take a close and careful look at the incredible story of a skilled remote-viewer who, in late 2019, was able to add further – and undeniably astonishing – data to this particular story of the closest things to real-life face-huggers.

This week I have a new book out from Red Wheel/Weiser’s New Page Books. Its title: The Martians: Evidence of Life on the Red Planet. The story dates back into the distant past and right up until the present day. And, it’s a highly controversial story, too. For example, the book addresses such issues as the “Face on Mars,” unusual pyramid-like structures on the planet, additional so-called faces, and even what appear to be strange creatures on the surface of Mars. On top of that there are certain, curious monoliths – on Mars and on one of its moons: Phobos. And what about the CIA’s secret remote-viewing of Mars back in 1984? The most important aspect of the latter issue is not just what the CIA found, but why the agency felt there was such a pressing need to uncover the secrets of the Red Planet. Add to the planet’s “Banyan Trees,” and Mars’ own equivalent of Stonehenge (“Marshenge,” of course!), and you begin to see how incredibly weird Mars really is. What about the sensational possibility that an advanced Martian civilization might still exist – albeit in a very precarious situation? All of these questions and issues are guaranteed to provoke debate – and a great deal of controversy.

Many will tell you that Mars is an utterly dead world. No animal life, no plant life. Nothing. That is not the case, though. As I demonstrate, Mars is absolutely teeming with life; both flora and fauna, no less. Some of that life is highly advanced and incredibly old. There’s no denying that the planet guards its incredible and disturbing secrets both diligently and carefully. It has done so for a long time; an amazingly long time. None of that, however, has stopped us from uncovering a wealth of what can only be described as “anomalies” on Mars. The Martians: Evidence of Life on the Red Planet is an in-depth study of the theory that Mars was once a world which teemed with life. Perhaps, even, life that is not at all too dissimilar to ours. Incredibly, the Martians may still be there. Alive. Hiding deep below the surface of a ruined world.

There can be absolutely no doubt whatsoever that it was the discovery of the “Face on Mars” back in the 1970s that energized the interest and controversy that surrounded (and that still continues to surround) the possibility that Mars may once have been a world not too dissimilar to ours – even a world inhabited by beings who resembled us to a staggering degree. Some would put all of that down to nothing stranger than pareidolia. I don’t. Although I don’t see NASA engaged in a huge cover-up of the Martian structures, what I do see is a mistake on its part. That mistake has been to ignore and summarily dismiss the many undeniable oddities away as the results of nothing but pareidolia. The purpose behind all of this lack of interest or involvement by the space agency? Probably NASA’s fear of its reputation being besmirched, and the risk of its staff presented by an over-sensational media as “alien hunters.”

I should stress that while I don’t think NASA is sitting on some sensational secrets on Mars, that certainly cannot be the same for a number of other agencies. I mentioned the CIA earlier. They were not alone, however. During the course of my investigations I found evidence showing that other agencies and shadowy departments have certainly taken a very deep interest in what might have occurred on Mars – and what might still be going on there. Moving on: when it comes to the scientific community, it is almost exclusively unwilling to address the mysteries of Mars in a fashion that just might have a potentially adverse bearing on their lofty, much-cherished reputations. Some, I suspect, are fearful of what they might find if they dare to go looking too closely: what we might call a skewed case of deliberate self-censorship. As a species, we are woefully unaware, and largely ignorant, of a series of incredibly ancient events that revolved around a nightmarish, irreversibly-collapsing Mars. And, of death on an almost incomprehensible scale for the Martians, most of them killed before they could flee their world for ours. But, not all of them. When? Without doubt millennia ago – probably even way back further than that. The secrets of Mars are about to be revealed…

Within the world of the paranormal there are many strange phenomena for which we have no concrete answers, and which serve to merely baffle and confuse. Yet among these there can often be those very surreal and odd things that lurk out on the periphery of the odd, evading any attempts to even really classify. This is surely an apt description of the increasing number of reports making the rounds of eerie, tall pale humanoids that go way off into the realm of the truly bizarre, and which defy any real efforts to understand. Here we will look at some reports of truly otherworldly tall and pale entities and beings that are in a league of weirdness all their own.

One spooky account comes from the Reddit user “Saskguy85,” who had his encounter while driving through the remote wilderness somewhere near the Canadian border. At the time he was on his way home from a friend’s house at around 4 AM, and it is described as a 45-minute drive, around 10 minutes of which is through a dense patch of rugged, black forest. On this evening he took the drive slow after almost hitting a deer, moving along carefully as he peered into the gloom ahead. As he did, it seems something beyond his comprehension bloomed up out of the dark, and he says of what happened:

As I approached the exit of the forest there is a left curve in the road and an adjacent dirt road with a white wooden fence lining it going up a hill to what I would imagine would lead to someone’s property/home. As I was making the turn I seen something in my headlights (Brights) at the edge of the fence. It was a tall pale milky white creature with a bald head. Its eyes reflected back. Clothes-less . It’s arms and legs just as white as its bald head. I seen it for a second or two as it made a move to dive behind the fence. I braked and backed up slowly and pointed my lights at the fence looking for any kind of movement. I was parked on the highway which was abandoned at 5 am. My heart was racing and I didn’t know why. I must have sat there for a minute before I calmed down, didn’t see any movement and decided I better not go and investigate or maybe I’d become a missing person and continued my journey home. To this day I still wouldn’t have gotten out to investigate unless I had a weapon or someone with me. So the only description I have of this “thing” is tall, pale, bald, and human like features, but no noticeable hair or eyebrows.

A perhaps even more frightening similar account is given by Reddit user “DistinctEarthling,” who had his strange experience while driving along a rural back road in Upstate NY on Christmas night, 2007 on his way to visit a friend in a rural gated community. As he approached the community he came to an area where he would encounter something from out of a nightmare. He says:

I reached a section of road that had barren fields on either side and woods set back. Houses were probably nestled back into the trees. As I drove, I noticed what looked like someone walking up ahead on the opposite side of the road, coming in my direction. Mind you, I was still going about 20 mph the whole time, so it was probably less than a minute by the time the “walker” came into clear view. I got a quick scan of it from my windshield before my car and it were exactly parallel. This is what I saw: It was not a person. It stood on two long legs, with long arms hanging down from its shoulders. It was strong looking. Lean, muscular, but not beefy in stature. It looked thin at the same time. It stood at least 7 foot tall. It was light coloured: not sure whether it was white, tan, yellow or greyish. It didn’t appear to have fur but there was some texture to the skin- it wasn’t smooth. There appeared to be something coming down off its back. I don’t know what this was. All I can recall about it’s face is the small features it had but the mouth and jaw were notably large. And it had pointed things atop its head- 2 things going straight upward with something mingled between the two things. That’s what I got from a quick scan and from my observation of it as it neared my car and my car neared it.

As my car became parallel to it within a split second, I went from looking out my windshield to looking at it from my driver’s side window. In that moment, it’s face quickly peered down at me and all I remember was the mouth opened wide. Out came a remarkable scream that I’ll never forget. Gives me the chills just thinking about it. It consisted of a high-pitched shrill/shriek, enveloped by a deep guttural growl. Both sounds happened simultaneously in that scream. I kept driving all the while. This was all happening so fast that I didn’t even have a chance to be scared or shocked or anything. I continued driving and went past my friend’s house and drove home. Called him to tell him what happened and that I just needed to get back. I was probably running on adrenaline to get back home. Later on, I was in total shock after it sunk in. Had my driver’s side window been opened fully, it would have touched me, or worse, taken me. I’m certain of it. To this day, I still haven’t worked out what this was.

In a case on the site Phantoms and Monsters we have a report from all the way over in Scotland. The witness says he was walking home with some friends through a park when they observed something beyond their reality. The witness claims:

Me and my friend were walking around a massive park in my town and it was around 11pm. We were just walking around having a smoke and a laugh, being teenagers and stuff. By this point it was pitch black. There’s no lights in the park and I’m a bit on edge because I’m not keen on the dark and I was kind of paranoid from the weed, but I’m gonna just cut to the interesting part. So me and my friend, let’s call him Sam, walk towards the actual swing park within the park and we’re like 10 feet from the park. There’s this unexplainable rancid smell that physically caused me to gag. We joke and say something about it being this girl from school we don’t like and head into the park. The smell is only getting stronger and I glance over at the small wall surrounding the park. There’s a bench and squatting behind the bench, at least 5 ft tall squatting, was what looked like a freakishly tall guy. He appeared to be naked and hairless. We both kinda stared for a minute before looking at each other as if to say “Yo, you can see that right” and the thing started laughing like a 4-year-old girl. We got the f**k out of there and ran like our lives depended on it and went home. We just laughed it off and kind of forgot about it, at least Sam forgot about it. But it was weeks ago and I’m still spooked and refuse to go near that park after dark.

Sometimes such sightings happen very close to home. Reddit user “Keanu” has a perhaps even creepier account, which apparently played out on evening as he was hanging out with some friends in his own home. He says that throughout the evening they kept hearing strange noises outside, but that every time they went to look there was nothing there. They ended up chalking it up to some animal prowling about and tried to ignore it, but it would soon prove to be no normal animal. The witness says that he stepped outside to have a cigarette and that’s when things got very weird very fast. He explains:

My friend began moaning in what I can only describe as pure primal fear so I began asking him what and suddenly my dog started barking. I looked to the right off the small porch and saw a tall, extremely thin, ghostly pale creature. It was a horrid humanoid figure. I only saw it for a moment before I heard the rocks under it scatter moving like someone was moving inhumanly fast over them. It was gone over the fence into the green belt behind my house in a split second. I’d say it perhaps 7 feet tall and humanoid in how it looks. I theorize that the creature was on top of my roof before as there’s no other way to describe the sounds we heard or how the creature appeared so suddenly and silently.

The same witness thinks it might be connected with a frightening encounter a friend of his had had in a nearby tunnel with a rusted metal gate. The tunnel is apparently a place where teenagers like to go to spook themselves, but there was typically no one there because it was out in a very rural wooded area and not easy to get to. On this occasion the friends decided to go exploring there, and the poster says of the outlandish events that would allegedly play out:

A couple of my friends decided to investigate further into the tunnel out of curiosity. You must also take note that they claim this happened awhile before my initial experience occurred. They walked deep into the tunnel probably 10-15 minutes. At a certain point later in the tunnel once flashlights are completely necessary it stoops down. They said there were noticeable amounts of feces that had questionable explanation to how it got there. With signs that the tunnel could be inhabited, but by something that couldn’t simply be an animal. This is also in a suburban area where homeless people or addicts are extremely uncommon. This tunnel in particular I know for a fact no man would want to take up residence, especially with the small amount of water running through it. They reached a part in the tunnel where it got even lower and above where it drops down is painted “Welcome to Hell” coincidentally. There they say they saw a tall pale figure hunched in a way so that it took up most of the height of the tunnel but was noticeably gaunt and thin. And at that point they claim to have saw it move and they turned tail and frantically sprinted down the tunnel with no regard for the water or darkness. Given the description of what witnessed I would say that these two incidents are likely connected and the creature in question is likely to be the same one in each story, especially given the vicinity in which they occurred. We now theorize that the creature witnessed at my house dwells in the tunnel during the day and prowls at night. We don’t go near the tunnel anymore. I don’t think there’s a way this could be a coincidence.

What was this thing? Another report from the site Phantoms and Monsters similarly happened right in the witness’s yard, out in rural Durham, in the state of North Carolina. On this evening his family had gone off to visit a relative who had recently given birth, so he had the quiet house to himself. He decided to bring his dog out for a walk before bedtime at around 12 AM, and he says of what happened next:

I took her out the back-garage door with her long leash (I was wearing socks and didn’t feel like getting them soaked). She usually does her “business” in that little clearing between the kennel and garage, so I let her walk down through it. Our garage has a single light on the back wall (not LED or really bright) so I can see her somewhat well while she does it. She’s facing me when suddenly her backside lifts almost one or two feet into the air. (Paranormal or not I f**king screamed at this) I assumed some wild dog or something had tried to drag her. She runs back to me and I hear rustling among the rocks and this figure stops right as it enters visible view in the light. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life. “It” was tall. I’m 6’2 and I had to look slightly up to see where I thought its head was. It was pale but not white or grey, just normal pale flesh-color (like someone who spends a week or two indoors). It was lanky, not really anorexic or anything but definitely disproportionate. It looked at me for a good 1-2 seconds before it backtracked in the quickest manner I could never replicate. As soon as it went I booked it back inside.

I was torn about calling the police if neighbors who had heard my scream hadn’t. Behold almost half an hour later the police arrive in my driveway (I told them that I had seen a man in the back yard, leaving out the whole tall demon-sh*t going on.) I have been contemplating whether it was some creature or some NBA-bound nude meth-head. Once again, I don’t count myself as a “believer” in the bigfoot or mothman but I really don’t know what the f**k happened. I’m most definitely not taking the dog out alone anytime soon.

There is also a report from The UFO Reporting Center that is eerily similar, in that once again we have one of these strange entities encountered in someone’s backyard, this time in Cheyenne, Wyoming, in the Fall of 2004. The witness describes herself as a housewife and mother, and explains that it was at around sunset and that her two daughters were in their respective rooms as she watched TV in the living room. At some point her two dogs suddenly were agitated and on edge, which she claims was very unusual for them. The dogs gathered at the dining room window, which overlooks the backyard, growling and barking at something outside. Considering how odd their behavior was, the witness decided to investigate, and as soon as she opened the door things escalated into the weird very quickly. She says of what happened:

As I opened the door the dogs barged past me as they usually do when they are excited (i.e. to chase a bunny through the fence). On this occasion, they hooked around the door to cross the back of house. I took a step out keeping my hand on the door knob of storm door. They had stopped between my two patios shoulder to shoulder and barking hysterically. Defensive and afraid at the same time. I saw in front of them standing inside my privacy fence what looked like a bald headed teenager. I was thinking to myself, ‘hey, what’s this tall, skinny, pale white, bald teenager doing in my backyard’ and just then it turned to look at us just enough to show it’s right eye. It had a big black elongated upslanting eye. It then turned to its left and vanished on the spot. The dogs then ran to the spot where it stood sniffing the ground. Now, I didn’t get any supportive reactions from family or friends so for the last two years I’ve just put it out of my mind as best I could. I would raise the issue now and then, but when I hear reports on the news like a sighting over Chicago O’hare airport etc. I am reminded of my ‘encounter’. The surprise scared me so bad, I had to do lamaze breathing to slow my heartrate down.

I did not imagine this. I recall feeling I should look fast as it had no earlobes, no visible nose from my vantage point (it stood right shoulder to us) long arms, long fingers but did not count them. I don’t recall it’s feet, but it either wore a skin tight jump suit similar to skin color. I saw a shiny object on it’s upper left chest. All I could think was, I’m going to die of a heart attack and no one will know what I just saw. I witnessed some paranormal activity in years past, and I have to wonder if the incidents are related. It is a mystery! I am certain that we are not alone in the universe, but the public seems to be desensitized to this subject, as though a disinformation program has been at work since Roswell. People just think a person isn’t well if we’ve had this experience and won’t believe it until they see it for themselves. I had always said, the universe is so vast, we can’t be the only life there is, but I’m left wondering why ‘I’ was visited.

Another case concerning dogs was reported on Phantoms and Monsters, from a man who says this happened to a friend of his in May 2015 in Dufferin County, in Ontario, Canada. The friend supposedly lives on a farm on a few hundred acres of land, in a very rural area with not many people around at all. At the time the witness was living in a trailer as his farmhouse was renovated, and one evening he woke to the sounds of his dogs going nuts and scratching at the trailer door. Once again the strangeness started when he opened the door. The man says of what happened to his friend:

When he went to let them out he was surprised to see bright yellow lights behind and inside the nearby barn. Thinking it was trespassers he let his dogs loose and went to grab his rifle. He said as he was loading it he heard his dogs go from barking, to yelping and whining. They came barreling back into the trailer and proceeded to hide under the table. Thinking these people hurt his dogs he stepped out of the trailer and fired five rounds into the air and began yelling as he readied another magazine. He got a response when the lights around the barn grew incredibly bright. He admits that at that point he was pretty freaked out. He said that he stood there for a bit staring at the lights when he noticed two beings casually walking across the field towards the barn

Apparently when he saw them he was hit with a mixture of confusion and fear. He describes them as humanoid, pale white, tall and thin. Having very small heads in comparison to their bodies, he also notes that they must have been 6’5 with most of that height being leg length. He stated that they moved very strangely. Their upper body seemed stiff and locked, but their legs moved very fluidly. Almost bringing their knees to their chest. Understandably fear took over him, he took aim and fired three rounds at the beings. Which just made them completely stop moving. Then he noticed a third one to his left very close, but walking away from his trailer. He turned around, went back inside and went for his handguns when the light outside vanished. He sat inside his trailer with silent dogs until morning. He didn’t check out the barn until two days later. He found nothing strange there. No burn marks, no holes, all was normal. When checking the fields, he also found absolutely nothing. He told me that he was freaked out for a while afterwards, but nothing strange has ever happened on his property since then.

When looking at reports such as these it is hard to know what to think. What kind of phenomena could these truly bizarre accounts actually represent? Are these mere hoaxes, tall tales, and urban legends? Are these aliens, ghosts, demons, some sort if interdimensional phenomena? Or are they perhaps something else altogether, maybe even something we were never meant to understand? We will likely never know, and such reports flitter and dance out on the very fringes of the surreal and strange.

Within the field of Ufology, the term “little green men” turns up now and again – usually in a disparaging, fun-poking, debunking fashion. The fact is, though, that real LGM are not as common as some might think. After all, the most visible and well-known aliens of Ufology (and of pop-culture, too) are the large-headed, black-eyed Grays. And they’re called the Grays for a very good reason: they are gray in color! The real Men in Black (who are clearly not human) have pale skin, sometimes almost milk-white. The Space Brothers and Sisters of the 1950s had a skin color the same as us. And, yet, the LGM words still circulate. Of course, the so-called Reptilians of both Ufology and the world of conspiracy-theorizing are said to be green in color. It has to be said, though, that the Reptilians are certainly not little in stature. In fact, quite the opposite: they tower over even us – if you buy into the tales, it must be said. With that said, just how popular is the LGM phenomenon? Let’s have a look.

Edgar Rice Burroughs

A researcher of folklore named Chris Aubeck has been able to determine that those three, now-famous words – little green men – date back to the final years of the 19^th century. The renowned fantasy novelist Edgar Rice Burroughs wrote of the “green men of Mars” in his 1906 story, A Princess of Mars. On May 22, 1947, just one month before the term “flying saucer”” was coined (following the sighting of a squadron of UFOs seen over Mount Rainier, Washington State by a pilot named Kenneth Arnold) a reference to “little green men” was made in a Harrisburg, Illinois newspaper, the Daily Register. Although the small article was on a medical condition that can cause the skin to turn green, it demonstrates that the terminology was in popular use before UFOs were, themselves, a part of our culture. Four years later, in 1951, a sci-fi novel, Mack Reynolds’ The Case of the Little Green Men was published.

Let’s now take a look into the distant past. So the tale goes, back in the 12^th Century, a young girl and boy, of strangely green-hued skin, appeared in the  village of Woolpit, England, which is situated between the towns of Bury St. Edmunds and Stowmarket. The children claimed to have come from a magical place called St. Martin’s Land, which existed in an atmosphere of permanent twilight, and where the people lived underground, on nothing but green beans. While the story has been relegated by many to the realms of mere myth and folklore, it may not be just that. It might, actually, be much more. According to the old legend, the two children remained in Woolpit and were ultimately baptized by the villagers, who accepted them as their very own. And although the boy ultimately grew sickly and eventually died, the girl did not. She thrived and finally lost her green-tinged skin to normal colored skin of healthy appearance.

Aliens? Not in my opinion (you can find my views on all this at this link). I have, however, heard several UFO researchers say that the children were what we might call “proto” little green ETs. Researcher-writer Melanie Koslovic says: “It has also been suggested that the children may have been aliens, or inhabitants of a world beneath the Earth. In 1996 an article was published in the magazine Analog concerning this mystery; astronomer Duncan Lunan hypothesized that the children were accidentally sent to Woolpit from their home planet due to a malfunction in their ‘matter transmitter.'” Such is the passage of time, we’ll probably never get the full story of those strange kids. What all of this tells us is that yes, the “little green men” terminology is indeed ingrained in the field of Ufology. The extent to which it has a place in reality, however, is quite a different thing. For me, at least.

A common feature across the world of cryptozoology and UFOlogy are the countless cases of strange humanoid sightings. Such reports really run the range from the slightly odd, to the completely absurd, and they are so numerous that they have managed to almost become their own category of the paranormal. Among the many types of these strange encounters are those which seem to involve mysterious, inscrutable entities which seem very human indeed, except that they have no face and are firmly in the realm of the truly outlandish. Here we will take a look at some encounters with these faceless entities, and wonder at what they can possibly be.

Some very creepy encounters with faceless entities have happened out on roads, and one of these allegedly happened to a caller named “Nate” to the radio show Coast to Coast AM on a July 15, 2016 episode. The witness claims to be a truck driver from Indianapolis, Indiana, and on this evening he says he had been on his way to Illinois, heading east along the I-80, and that he had just had a solid 8-hour sleep during a stopover in Des Moines, so he was alert and fresh. As the road crept by, he says that something very unusual caught his eye, and he explains of what happened:

It was about dusk and the sun was just about to set and I was driving and I seen a figure just ahead of me on I-80 and it was right on the side of the road. When I say right on the side of the road, I don’t mean in the grass. Its toes were right on the white line. I slowed down a little bit to kind of see what was going on there and maybe avoid it. When I got about fifty yards from it, I got down to about 50 miles per hour and I could see it clear. I had my brights on and everything. It was a man. Well, it looked like a man about maybe 5’9 or 5’10. Couldn’t have been more than a hundred pounds soaking wet. And when I got up to him he looked at me and George I kid you not, he had no eyes, no mouth, no nostrils. There was no orifice on his face. He was pale white. No hair. No features whatsoever. There was a… It looked like a skeleton with bleached white skin. He was just kind of standing there looking right at me. I slowed down and as soon as I seen his face, he looked up at me, boy, I flipped the hammer down from Illinois all the way to Chicago. I never looked back. My blood ran cold. My hair stood up. I was one of the most disturbing things I’ve ever seen in my life.

Another witness gave his report to the site Phantoms and Monsters, and claims to be from the Okanagan Valley, in British Columbia, Canada. He says that he and his friends would often go driving late at night along the forest roads around their town, and although not much usually happened, this night would be different. He says:

One night we were up in the hills, probably 5 miles from the nearest house. We come around a blind corner and there is an old lady walking on the side of the road. She was wearing a long coat and a hood or shawl. We both muttered something like “what the….” D laughed and said, “Should we stop?” He slowed down the car, about to ask if she was OK, lost, needed a lift, etc. But as we got close, we noticed she had no face. It looked like she had a big grey hole were her face should be. No details of features. Just a grey void. We were basically speechless and just slowly rolled by her. I watched her in the rear view mirror as we turn a corner. We couldn’t think of any explanation why someone would be out there at 2-3 am. We both saw the same lack of facial features.

Very bizarre, indeed. Just as weird is a report from the same site, who says this happened in the middle of a clear day. She had gone to pick up her kid at school but got there a bit too early, so she decided to check out a small, historical park with a river and 19th century gristmill nearby. She pulled into the park’s parking lot and says that there were two other vehicles there, a new, white BMW sedan and an older gold Honda, both of which were empty. She didn’t think anything of it at the time, but things were about to take a steep drop into the bizarre. She says of what happened:

So I go about my way and check out the park. I walk along the path and there is a small waterfall and then after that you get to the gristmill. Really cool building. So I kill enough time and head back to my car. I get about 15 feet from my car and smell an intense dead animal smell. I’ve had a hefty handful of paranormal experiences and instantly feel uneasy. I quickly get into my car and look into my rearview mirror to start reversing. In the rearview I see inside the Honda and I instantly freaked because in the backseat I see a faceless “woman” with long brown, disheveled hair. Faceless as in hollow and all black with no features. And her hair looked like it had mattes with twigs. I’m spooked and keep my eyes on the figure as I head out. Then its head turned and its gaze followed me the whole ride out.

What was going on here? Who knows? In another report we have a Reddit poster called “BigAmen,” who claims this happened in a small town south of Dallas, Texas in 2013. At the time he was visiting his girlfriend at the nearby university and he decided to drive out to pick up some take-out food for them at around 11 PM. He describes the roads of the area as being very dark, with only very sporadic streetlights to offer pools of light, and he had his car parked under one of these for safety. Or at least he thought it would be safe. He says he left the girlfriend’s place and was on his way to the car when things began to get strange, and he says of his experience:

I remember walking off her porch and starting my way down the street a few houses down until I could start to see my car under that yellow light maybe 100 yards away at this point. It was awfully quiet and dark, but at this point I had no signs to alert me of anything to be worried about. It wasn’t until I walked right up to my car and around to the driver side that I came across a very odd and off-putting sight. It was a man, maybe my height at around 6ft, in normal clothing/wear, but was crouching about 15 feet away from my car. Looked maybe middle aged to me but even though the light was shining above to show his clothing and figure clearly, I couldn’t make out any facial features or anything of that matter.

My first reaction was possibly a car robbery or homeless man, but that fear quickly turned to dread. It was that type of feeling where you knew you were feeling fear, but it was a type of fear of something unfamiliar, yet I knew something was off and unnatural about this. Growing up in a big city, I have had plenty of run ins with people in the streets, whether just friendly homeless or drug-effected people acting out. However, both of these suspicions faded away as I stood there dead-still just staring expecting some type of reaction. At this point, maybe 10 seconds had passed, and I made the first move to get into my car quickly and lock the doors, being sure not to lose sight of the man all along. I turn the car on and reverse back to turn my car so that my headlights are directly facing the man. This is when my stomach absolutely dropped. His face, was just…blank?

With my headlights on him, I could now see him clearly. A collared long sleeve button up and dark pants, but his face was completely void of any features. No eyes, no mouth, just indentions and outlines of where they should be found, almost like a unfinished wax figure head of some sort. While viewing him, I realized he was now standing, but seemed taller. That’s when I looked down to see he was now floating maybe a foot off the ground facing my car directly. The amount of fear I felt at this point made my face feel numb and every alarm bell in my brain told me to leave now. I turned my car around and quickly drove away towards the college.

The description of the entity floating rather than walking is very odd, but this strange detail has appeared in other reports as well. From the Reddit poster “SimilarEconomics4” comes a rather terrifying experience he had while growing up in the small town of Pine Grove in Pennsylvania. He says that his best friend at the time lived nearby and that he and his brother often took a shortcut through an alleyway to go there. This was a tiny town where everyone knew each other and which was very safe, but on this day they would have an encounter with a mysterious stranger that they would never forget. He explains:

My brother and I start getting closer to our friends’ house and we see this man by the stop sign at the end of the alley. The stop sign is past our friends’ house about 150 yards away. He looked like what I would picture God looking like: White man, silky white pants and shirt. As we get closer, my heart starts pounding faster and I realize he is floating and not walking. My brother saw it too and said he is floating and we start running. This man/thing looked at us at this point he was about 100 yards away from us and he literally had no face just blank, blurred face. No eyes, nose, no nothing. We had reached our friends’ house and they were asking why we looked so scared. We told them what happened and the boys rode their bikes around the neighborhood but saw nothing that fit our description. I still to this day have no idea what the heck it was but it still makes my heart race.

Perhaps the most terrifying type of encounter one could have with a faceless entity like these would be to confront one within the comfort of one’s own home, and there are indeed reports along these lines. One witness on a Reddit humanoid thread says she had an outlandish encounter with a “faceless man” as she was sitting at home on her porch talking to her boyfriend on the phone. It was a little after midnight, and as she talked she says she noticed a man standing about a block away staring in her direction, and as she peered in that direction to see who it was she was taken aback by the appearance of the stranger, and it would soon become a apparent that this was no man at all. She says:

He was barefoot, shirtless, and wearing jean cut-offs. He had sandy brown hair, but where his face was supposed to be was utterly blank- no eyes, no mouth, no nose- nothing. Despite that, I still had the sensation that it was staring at me. I told my bf what I was seeing, and he told me to close my eyes for a sec, thinking I was just tired. I did so, but when I opened them- the faceless man was closer to me. I stared and it started moving closer to me. It wasn’t walking though, it was just sort of… in the next spot with each blink. At this point, I had had quite enough and went inside. I woke up my friends (there were five of us staying the night together) and we all piled into the window, so I could show them this thing. It was gone, but an ambulance went down the street and stopped where the faceless man had started out. We didn’t wait to see what rolled out with the EMTs.

It seems as if this might have been a ghost or spirit, but most cases of these faceless beings are harder to classify. Another poster called “plimpp69” says his own encounter happened right in his own bedroom. He says that this occurred in the summer of 2011, when he was a freshman in high school and that he suddenly woke at 1 AM for no discernible reason, but it would soon turn out that he was not alone in that room. The witness says of the strange events that unfolded next:

A few minutes later I heard faint footsteps. At first, I was thinking that it was just in my head. After a few minutes, I started to look around as I usually do whenever I wake up. I heard the footsteps again, but this time they sounded like they were literally outside my room. In my peripheral vision I noticed that I couldn’t see into my brother’s room, he also used to sleep with the door open and his room is across from mine as if something was standing in front or blocking the entry. I got curious and turned to see what was blocking the entry, and I saw a humanoid figure, about 7 feet tall, it was faceless, bald, and had a fair skin complexion, it was dressed old fashioned, it had a cream colored sweater with what appeared to be random paint strokes and splashes on it of many colors, and black slacks. It was just standing there as if looking at me. 

I started analyzing it, it was abnormally thin, and had freakishly long arms, arms way past the knee. It also had visible veins running all over its faceless expression. I thought I was dreaming at first, I started blinking, shaking my head, and slapping myself in hopes that I was dreaming or hallucinating. I stopped and looked across… It was still standing there…I immediately freaked out when I found out I was not dreaming and pulled the covers over my face. I tried yelling for help and I couldn’t scream at all from the terror. 30 minutes later I built up courage and pulled the covers off to confront it and it was gone. I haven’t seen it ever since. My youngest brother also happened to see that thing earlier this year.

An even more otherworldly and hard to categorize encounter comes from the files of researcher Albert S Rosales, and concerns another witness in Belton Missouri who came face to face with a strange entity in his bedroom in 2015. The report was given by the witness’s wife, and she explains that it all began when her husband woke to find a small pinpoint of red light travelling across the wall and ceiling of the room. The couple believed it to be a prank carried out by someone with a laser pointer at first, and even notified the police about it, but it was strange in that they had thick bamboo blinds on their window and it seemed impossible for someone to aim a laser pointer through the blinds and onto the wall. It was perplexing, and they sort of tried to put it out of their mind until a few nights later, when the weirdness would graduate into the full-blow bizarre. She explains:

This morning he called me into his bedroom and told me that he had seen a being in his bedroom around 6:00 AM. He said that it appeared to be self illuminating. “Very bright” He said it was about my height, which is approximately 5 foot five inches and that it glowed and it had no face.He said it’s head was a little larger than human. He said when he saw it; the being was near the bedroom door, apparently when it realized my husband was watching it, the being looked slightly over its shoulder at my husband and very quickly exited the bedroom. My husband said it had no discernible features, it had no face. It was then he told me that the night he’s seen the laser, he’d had also seen an approx 3 foot by 3 foot square shape projected on the mirror of his closet doors.

He said it looked like a large picture frame and that there was a very bright light illuminating from within it, with strange black symbols that resembled hieroglyphics inside of what he described as small boxes they were also illuminated. He said he’s never seen anything like them before. I asked him why he hadn’t mentioned this before. He told me that he couldn’t understand how there was this large imagine in his mirror, because there are no windows on the west wall of his bedroom, so it couldn’t have been a reflection. He wasn’t going to mention it until he saw the being this morning. He told me he’s very unnerved about these sightings, since they are becoming repetitive. I’m concerned because my husband is not one to make-up stories. He’s very practical down to earth kind of person. If he said he saw something, he did.

Looking at encounters like these there seems to be so many possibilities as to what lies behind them. Aliens, ghosts, interdimensional interlopers of some sort, all of these have been proposed, but there are few answers. Perhaps the true origin of these entities is a mix of all of the above, depending on the case. Or maybe it is all urban legend in the making, the idea of spooky faceless strangers so alluring and weird that it has taken on a life of its own. Whatever the case may be, such reports continue to make the rounds, and they most certainly occupy a strange corner all their own in the world of the paranormal.
