AI Could Help Astronomers Rapidly Generate Hypotheses
Almost anywhere you go on the internet, it seems nearly impossible to escape articles on AI. Even here at UT, we’ve published several. Typically they focus on how a specific research group leveraged the technology to make sense of reams of data. But that sort of pattern recognition isn’t all that AI is good for. In fact, it’s becoming pretty capable of abstract thought. And one place where abstract thought can be helpful is in developing new scientific theories. With that thought in mind, a team of researchers from ESA, Columbia, and the Australian National University (ANU) utilized an AI to come up with scientific hypotheses in astronomy.
Specifically, they did so in the sub-field of “Galactic Astronomy,” which specializes in research surrounding the formation and physics of galaxies. A recently published paper on arXiv mentions that they selected this sub-field because of its “integrative nature,” which requires “knowledge from diverse subfields.”
That sounds exactly like what AI is already good at. But a standard Large Language Model (LLM) like those that have become most familiar recently (ChatGPT, Bard, etc.) wouldn’t have enough subject knowledge to develop reasonable hypotheses in that field. It might even fall prey to the “hallucinations” that some researchers (and journalists) warn are one of the downsides of interacting with the models.
This version of Fraser’s question show deals partially with AI.
To avoid that problem, the researchers, led by Ioana Ciuc? and Yuan-Sen Ting of ANU, used a piece of code known as an application programming interface (API), which was written in Python, known as Langchain. This API allows more advanced users to manipulate LLMs like GPT-4, which serves as the latest basis for ChatGPT. In the researchers’ case, they loaded over 1,000 scientific articles relating to Galactic Astronomy into GPT-4 after downloading them from NASA’s Astrophysics Data System.
One of the researchers’ experiments was to test how the number of papers the model had access to affected its resulting hypotheses. They noticed a significant difference between the suggested hypotheses it developed having access to only ten papers vs. having access to the full thousand.
But how did they judge the validity of the hypotheses themselves? They did what any self-respecting scientist would do and recruited experts in the field. Two of them, to be precise. And they asked them to just the hypotheses based on originality of thought, the feasibility of testing the hypotheses, and the scientific accuracy of its basis. The experts found that, even with a limited data set of only ten papers to go off of, the hypotheses suggested by “Astro-GPT,” as they called their model, were graded only slightly lower than a competent Ph.D. student. With access to the full 1,000 papers, Astro-GPT scored at a “near-expert level.”

A critical factor in determining the final hypotheses that were presented to the experts was that the hypotheses were refined using “adversarial prompting.” While this sounds aggressive, it simply means that, in addition to the program that was developing the hypotheses, another program was trained on the same data set and then provided feedback to the first program about its hypotheses, thereby forcing the original program to improve their logical fallacies and generally create substantially better ideas.
Even with the adversarial feedback, there’s no reason for astronomy Ph.D. students to give up on coming up with their own unique ideas in their field. But, this study does point to an underutilized ability of these LLMs. As they become more widely adopted, scientists and laypeople can leverage them more and more to come up with new and better ideas to test.
The UFO phenomenon is truly a world of the weird. Here we have sightings of bizarre crafts, encounters with aliens, and everything in between. Yet while most accounts feature something totally alien, for instance the ubiquitous "Greys" or reptilians, and others, there are also other alien encounters that seem to feature something altogether more human, in fact, totally human. Here we will look at a selection of cases of people coming across UFO occupants only to figure out that they are us.
There have been various cases of encounters which seem to be of humans piloting UFOs or seemingly somehow working in conjunction with otherworldly beings. An early report comes from September of 1972, in the town of Palenque in the Dominican Republic. The unnamed witness was allegedly driving along a rural, desolate stretch of road when he saw in the glow of his headlights a trio of aliens in “grey form-fitting uniforms and with lemon-hued skins.” As the driver slowed down he could see that parked some distance off the road was a large, egg-shaped craft of some sort, and he found himself mesmerized by the sight, stopping his vehicle as one of the figures approached him.
When the strange entity got to his car, it apparently began speaking to the frightened driver in perfect Spanish, and explained that he had actually once been human. According to this being, he had been rescued by the aliens from drowning at sea some seven years earlier, and that his human name had been the not very Spanish-sounding name “Freddy Miller.” According to Miller, his outlandish appearance was due to the fact that he had adapted to life on the alien home world, although it is unclear just how this was accomplished. The two conversed for a while before “Miller” bid him farewell, joined his companions, and the whole trio of them took off on their spacecraft. What in the world was going on here?
A similar case supposedly occurred in November of 1974, outside Huesca, Spain. A couple claimed that they had been driving along a dark, lonely stretch of road when they saw a “pointy-faced” humanoid waving them down frantically as a semi-spherical UFO with alternating red, yellow, and white lights hovered in the background. For some reason the couple did not tear out of there as fast as they could, instead slowing down to see what this strange being wanted. They approached, stopped the car, the humanoid approached and …. asked them for a monkey wrench, of all things. It apparently spoke perfect Spanish and explained that he was human and had once been a “Dr. Flor, from Barcelona.” He told them he needed the wrench to fix a malfunction on his ship. They apparently gave him the wrench, he fixed his ship, and then flew off into the night. No word on whether or not he returned the wrench.
In 1989, Spanish UFO investigator J.J. Ben¡tez investigated a case which took place in the south of Spain, in which some frightened teenagers claimed to have seen two “large, brilliant figures” materialize out of nowhere and then transform into what looked like normal human beings dressed in street clothes appropriate for the time and place. These two figures, a man and a woman, then casually strolled off towards the beach. The teenagers waited around for a while and the strange couple returned a few hours later, after which a UFO appeared above them and the pair disappeared in a flash of light. When they followed the trail of footprints, they found that it led straight into the water at the beach. What in the world?
In October of 1974, a group of UFO researchers in Puerto Rico went out into the El Yunque Rainforest to investigate a spate of sightings in the area, long a hotbed of UFO activity. As they made their way along the trail, they saw a trio of people walking towards them in the opposite direction. As they approached it could be seen that the three of them looked almost like clones of each other, and that they were wearing “nondescript uniforms.” It was odd enough that the group leader, Heriberto Ramos, snapped some covert photos of the trio as they passed. Strangely, when these photos were developed they showed a haze shrouding the figures, and Ramos would later claim that the photos had been stolen from his office.
Even more bizarre is a case that revolves around the famous case of the disappearance of the Australian pilot Frederick Valentich, who vanished on October 21, 1978 while on a flight from Victoria, Australia to King Island aboard a single-engine Cessna 182 aircraft. At some point during this flight, Valentich radioed the Melbourne Air Flight Service (MAFS) to report that he had spotted a “large aircraft” with four lights on it. He would call it in wanting to know if there were any other planes scheduled to be in the area, but things would quickly take a turn for the bizarre. The transcript of their conversation makes or some spooking reading, and is as follows:
Valentich: “Is there any known traffic in my area below 5,000 feet?”
MAFS: “Negative. No known traffic.”
Valentich: “Seems to be a large aircraft below 5,000 feet.”
MAFS: “What type of aircraft?”
Valentich: I cannot confirm. It has four bright lights that appear to be landing lights…aircraft has just passed over me about 1,000 feet above.”
MAFS: “Is large aircraft confirmed?”
Valentich: “Affirmative; at the speed it is traveling are there any RAAF [Royal Australian Air Force] aircraft in the vicinity?”
MAFS: “Negative. What is your altitude?”
Valentich: “4,500 feet.”
MAFS: “Confirm you cannot identify aircraft?”
Valentich: “Affirmative.”
Three minutes later, Valentich again contacts MAFS:
Valentich: “Aircraft…It’s not an aircraft. It’s” [break in transmission.]
MAFS: “Can you describe aircraft?”
Valentich: “It’s flying past. It has a long shape. Cannot identify more than that…coming for me right now. It seems to be stationary. I’m orbiting, and the thing is orbiting on top of me. It has a green light and sort of metallic light on the outside.”
He then reported that the object had vanished.
MAFS: “Confirm it has vanished?”
Valentich: “Affirmative. Do you know what sort of aircraft I’ve got? Is it military?”
MAFS: “No military traffic in the area.”
At 7:12 p.m. Valentich reported, “Engine is rough idling and coughing.”
MAFS: “What are your intentions?”
Valentich: “Proceeding King Island. Unknown aircraft now hovering on top of me.”
MAFS: “Acknowledge.”
Valentich: “Delta Sierra Juliet [Valentich’s call sign] Melbourne…
After Valentich’s transmission is cut short there is then about 17 seconds of a loud metallic sound and then nothing. Valentich would disappear without a trace, his plane and body never found, and considering that there had been numerous UFO sightings in the area at the time, the UFO lore speculates that he was whisked away by aliens. But what happened to him after that? One bonkers report from Spanish UFO researcher Manuel Carballal claims that he might have the answer, and it is that Valentich merely stayed with the aliens for a while, but had returned to resume life on Earth. According to Carballal, in 1990 a man claiming to be Valentich showed up at Plaza del Charco, on the island of Tenerife in the Canary Islands, even showing his Australian passport to prove it. Oddly, he was said to have shown no signs of having aged since he had disappeared, and when asked what had happened to him he claimed to have been recruited by the aliens and was tasked with telling them about life on Earth. He then disappeared without a trace again. Is there anything to this report? Who knows?
Frederick Valentich
If any of these cases really are describing humans who have for whatever reason been recruited or been taken in by extraterrestrials, then to what end might this be? Is it curiosity, a desire to know more about us, or is it something more sinister? One strange and not a little ominous theory comes from ex-WW II fighter pilot, former intelligence operative, and UFO researcher Luis Anglada Font, who believes such cases are indicative of a nefarious plot put into motion by the aliens, involving recruiting human sympathizers for the purpose of using them as spies, terrorists, and to generally destabilize and undermine society so that we may be eventually replaced. Conversely, they may even be recruiting humans to join some sort of invasion force. It is all pretty off-the-wall, and UFO researcher Scott Corrales has said of some of Anglada’s ideas:
In the Grey-and-Reptoid-haunted 1980’s, 1990’s, and today, it is almost heretical to suggest that any other possible form of occupant can emerge from a UFO. But human ufonauts remain an intriguing part of the picture, and their very existence has suggested very disturbing possibilities to certain investigators. Anglada turned his military man’s eye upon a problem that distressed him greatly: he had no doubt as to the fact that UFOs and their occupants were real, but what was to be made of the humans who are often seen aboard UFOs or involved in some sort of activity with the ufonauts? The evidence presented by Luis Anglada in his argument was based on the mysterious disappearances of humans and “breeding experiments.” Humans were being abducted in order to breed an “invasion force” that would be human and acclimated to the alien’s home planet. He suggested that not all the force would consist of conscripts-some would be youthful volunteers, who, attracted by the prospect of adventure, would choose to throw their lot in with the ufonauts.
Despite the “space opera” ring that such a claim leaves in our ears, the truth is that humans have been reported in some landmark cases. Anglada offers a more ominous possibility: these UFO-related humans (as well as the “offspring” of our contemporary abductees, resulting from the breeding experiments to which they are allegedly subjected) could well be our replacements on this planet, after our own race is annihilated either by design or accident. In his militaristic scenario, these hybrid humans would be returned to Earth as our overlords or taskmasters: much more alien than human in custom, training and choice. The genetic experiments being visited upon unsuspecting humans worldwide reinforce the above mentioned possibility. But what do the very human collaborators stand to benefit from it all? Power, influence or status in the real “new world order”? It remains anyone’s guess.
What are we to make of such cases? Why should people be riding around in or even piloting these otherwordly craft? It truly boggles the mind. Are they in league with these alien forces, is this some sort of trick, is it all just delusions, or is it maybe, just maybe something else? No matter what the case may be, these reports of human beings and UFOs are certainly bizarre, and form their own little corner of the larger UFO phenomenon.
The Pentagon whistleblower who claims the US has run a top secret UFO retrieval program for decades says some of the 'non-human intelligences' discovered are malevolent and have even killed humans.
David Grusch served 14 years in the Air Force, where he says he was told about the program by others who were involved.
Grusch, 36, is a decorated Afghanistan combat officer who went on to work for the National Geospatial-Intelligence Agency (NGA) and the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO).
His role was to act as the NRO's representative when dealing with the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force. The task force was specifically set up to investigate UFOs.

Over the last week, he has gone public with what he says it entailed, telling NewsNation about how the US is in an arms race with Russia and China to understand the extra-terrestrial life.
In his most recent comments, he says the 'non human' intelligences have acted with malevolence - and even killed some humans.
'I think the logical fallacy there is because they’re advanced, they’re kind. We’ll never really understand their full intent and that’s because we’re not them.
'But I think what appears to be malevolent activity has happened.
'That’s based on nuclear site probing activities and witness testimony.
'While I can’t get into the specifics because that would reveal certain US classified operations, I was briefed by a few individuals on the program that there were malevolent events like that,' he said, when asked specifically if any had killed humans.
Grusch also made the astonishing claim that the US government would do anything to protect the secret - including killing people itself.
'At the very least, I saw substantive evidence that white-collar crime was committed...unfortunately.
'I’ve heard some really un-American things I don’t want to repeat right now,' he said.

He claimed some of the UFOs discovered have been as large as football fields.
Another military veteran also told DailyMail.com that his six man unit saw a hovering UFO being loaded with weapons while he was serving in Indonesia.
Grusch filed his report in July last year. At the time, the Intelligence Community Inspector General called the complaint 'urgent and credible.'
'There is a sophisticated disinformation campaign targeting the U.S. populace which is extremely unethical and immoral,' he said, accusing the US government of lying to the public for 'decades'.
'We are most definitely not alone,' he said, adding that 'quite a number' of aircraft have been discovered.
The Pentagon denied having any knowledge of the program described by Grusch last week, but said it would follow ongoing investigations into his claims 'wherever they lead'.
The House Oversight Committee also says it will investigate his claims.

Like a lot of people, I've been following the highly controversial story of former U.S. official David Gruschand those UFOs and aliens. Even my dad mailed me a copy of the U.K.'s Daily Mail article. When it comes to politics and newspapers, though, I'm on the left. But, that doesn't really matter. In case you haven't read the story, its title is: "The Pentagon UFO expert who says aliens HAVE crash landed on Earth...and the American government is hiding their bodies." There's no doubt about Grusch. His words make it clear that we do have dead aliens and UFOs or we don't. Of course, there's another angle. It's a very intriguing angle: that all of this is being done to worry our potential enemies and make them think we have extraterrestrial technology hidden away.When we really don't.
The Daily Mail says of all this that Grusch "...had decided to go public to give the world an 'ontological shock" (one that would make it think about the nature of being) and bring them together to "re-assess their priorities." So, where do we go from now? I suggest that we do what we can do: by that, I mean we look for the "crown jewels." The aliens: dead or alive. So, how do we do that? Well, we may not be able to prove anything in this situation, but there are people who claim to have seen dead ETs - and they also know where the bodies are. So, that's where I'm going in this article. We're still not sure what's going on.
When it comes to extraterrestrial bodies hidden away, most people focus on Area 51. There are, however, other top secret facilties that are said to hold non-human bodies. Let's have a look at the first story. It revolves around the Dugway Proving Ground in Utah. The story circulates around a Colonel George Weinbrenner, who was the Chief of the Foreign Technology Division (FTD) at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base Air Materiel Command (AMC), Dayton, Ohio, for a period of seven years during the 1960s and 1970s. On several occasions, Weinbrenner made brief allusions to the fact that “we have five aliens in Utah.”
Those same allusions were made to close friends and family. Although, he would not expand on this issue. But why, exactly, might such bodies have been transferred to Dugway? Researcher Tony Bragalia offers a viable and logical explanation: “Dugway serves as the central source for information on biological material issues for all Commanders-in-Chief and Services. For over six decades they have acted as this source. Though there are other military installations in Utah, Dugway is (as a Deseret Morning News reporter once said) “the single most secretive site in all of Utah. Its isolated physical location is uniquely suited for such ‘alien containment.’ Dugway is home to the most advanced facilities in the world designed for the containment, storage and preservation of highly exotic biological material.” Perhaps, this article will make people turn their heads to Dugway for the dead from space.
Now, let's go to the U.K. and a place called Porton Down. For years there have been rumors of Porton Down - almost a mirror-image of Dugway - hiding dead aliens in their facilities. As the BBC note, U.K. military personnel were regularly used in secret mind-altering experiments at Porton Down in the 1950s and 1960s. The BBC also say: “Porton Down was set up in 1916. It was a center designed to test chemical and biological weapons. Nerve gases such as Sarin and CS gas were tested on volunteer servicemen. Servicemen were offered around £2 and three days leave as an incentive to take part in tests. Very few servicemen knew what they were volunteering for and some were even told it was research into the cure for the common cold. In 1953 it is alleged that serviceman Ronald Maddison died after taking part in a Sarin gas experiment. In 1962, one of Porton Down’s own scientists, Geoffrey Bacon died of the plague. Since the end of WWII, 20,000 people have taken part in experiments at Porton Down.” LSD was tested at Porton Down, too. On military personnel, no less. And as the Guardian newspaper stated in 2005: “Fifty years ago, Eric Gow had a baffling and unexplained experience. As a 19-year-old sailor, he remembers going to a clandestine military establishment, where he was given something to drink in a sherry glass and experienced vivid hallucinations. Other servicemen also remember tripping." Porton Down would be the perfect place to hide dead aliens. Onto something else...

On the evening of January 23, 1974, an event took place on the Berwyn Mountains, Wales that some have suggested involved a crashed UFO and dead aliens. In 1996, a military whistleblower came forward, claiming that aliens had crashed on the Berwyn Mountains back in January 1974. The pummeled bodies of the dead crew were said to have been secretly rushed to Porton Down, for hasty examination and even hastier preservation. As is so typically often the case in such situations, the source chose not to provide his name to the UFO research community of the day. He preferred to lurk in the darkness, shrouded in mystery and intrigue. He shared his story only with Tony Dodd, who was a North Yorkshire police sergeant and UFO investigator. Dodd chose to give his talkative soldier the alias of “James Prescott,” who was said by Dodd to have been long-retired from the British Army.
“I cannot name my unit or barracks, as they are still operational,” Prescott told Dodd. Prescott did, though, admit that his base at the time was situated in the south-west of England, which – as the crow flies – may have placed his installation not too far from Porton Down. In a very baffling way - and although the incident on the Berwyn Mountains occurred on January 23, 1974 - Prescott and his colleagues were ordered to be on “stand-by at short notice” on January 18. That was five days before the Berwyns were briefly highlighted in the nation’s newspapers. Prescott got right into the heart of the story: “We then received orders to proceed with speed towards North Wales. We were halted in Chester in readiness for a military exercise we believed was about to take place. On 20 January, the communication to us was ‘hot.’ At approximately 20:13 hours we received orders to proceed to Llangollen in North Wales and to wait at that point.”
According to Prescott there was a huge amount of “ground and aircraft activity” over and around those huge mountains. Remember, this was still January 20, according to Prescott – three days before the ground shook those little old villages at the foot of the mountains. Prescott said that on that same night he and his colleagues were given further orders: “We, that is myself and four others, were ordered to go to Llandderfel and were under strict orders not to stop for any civilians,” claimed Prescott. On arriving at Llandderfel - a small, Welsh village - they could see soldiers racing around. Senior officers were barking orders here, there and everywhere. Aircraft were zooming across the star-filled sky. And all of this was against a background of overwhelming darkness. Prescott and his colleagues were ordered to haul a pair of large, wooden boxes onto the back of their truck, which they did in rapid-fire time. According to Prescott: “We set off with our cargo and during the journey we stopped to get a drink. We were immediately approached by a man in civilian clothes, who produced an I.D. card and ordered us to keep moving, and not to stop until we reached our destination.”
Matters got really weird, as Prescott explained to Dodd: “We were at this time warned not to open the boxes, but to proceed to Porton Down and deliver the boxes. Once inside, the boxes were opened by staff at the facility in our presence. We were shocked to see two creatures which had been placed inside decontamination suits. When the suits were fully opened it was obvious the creatures were clearly not of this world and, when examined, were found to be dead. What I saw in the boxes that day made me change my whole concept of life. Perhaps, we should focus on Porton Down. Maybe, there are some strange secrets."
How about the United States' Wright-Patterson Air Force Base? For decades there have been stories of dead aliens held deep below the surface of Wright-Pat. The rumor is that the lowest level of the facility is called the Blue Room. Of course, getting into the Blue Room would be impossible. But, getting important, credible figures in the military to speak about the Blue Room would be excellent. In other words, Area 51 is not the only secret place that might be hiding bodies. And, how about the words of U.S. Senator Barry Goldwater? He wrote the following, highly thought-provoking, words to a UFO researcher named Shlomo Arnon: "The subject of UFOs is one that has interested me for some long time. About ten or twelve years ago I made an effort to find out what was in the building at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base where the information is stored that has been collected by the Air Force, and I was understandably denied this request. It is still classified above Top Secret.” Goldwater continued to Arnon: “I have, however, heard that there is a plan under way to release some, if not all, of this material in the near future. I’m just as anxious to see this material as you are, and I hope we will not have to wait much longer."
There are rumors, too, that the Russians have extraterrestrial technology and bodies. Just to confuse things, however, the Russians have created models of dead aliens and crashed UFOs to frighten the U.S. Government. It was all a game, however. Nineteen-sixty-nine was the year in which an elaborate UFO-themed Soviet ruse was put into place. This one was highly sophisticated and revolved around a crashed UFO and the autopsy of an alleged alien creature. The story itself is undeniably fascinating – which is what the Russians were surely counting on – as the “evidence” is an old piece of film-footage that reportedly chronicled the whole thing. While the crash of the UFO is said to have occurred in March 1969, the story – and the attendant film – did not surface until 1998, almost three decades later.
The Secret KGB UFO Files, was broadcast in the United States and elsewhere. A great deal of money was put into the over-sensationalized production and it was hosted by the late Roger Moore, the star of seven of the phenomenally successful James Bond movies. The documentary covered a wide body of UFO-based data (some of it blatantly hoaxed); however, there’s no doubt that it was specifically the film of the supposed crashed UFO and its deceased crew-member which caught the attention of most of those who bothered to watch it. Certainly, a great deal of effort went into the production of the film: this was no amateur, half-hearted operation. The footage is grainy, appears old, and was filmed by someone with a hand-held camera. It shows around fifteen-to-twenty men wearing Russian uniforms, thick coats and hats; they are all armed and are guarding a small, circular-shaped craft which appears to have slammed into the ground in a wooded, frosty area.
The location was said to have been Sverdlovsky, Russia. The trees are largely bereft of leaves and everything points to the incident having occurred in very cold, bleak weather. Only around a half of the saucer-shaped vehicle protrudes out of the soil, in an angled fashion. The inference is that the military unit found the craft shortly after it hit the ground and, at the time of the filming, were in the process of guarding the site from any and all onlookers that might have come along. To this day, we don’t know where the film came from, and how it reached the producers of The Secret KGB UFO Files. We’re told that the production company had to pay $10,000 U.S. dollars to secure it, after it was smuggled out of KGB archives. Supposedly.
So, where are we at? Well, that's a good question. Looking for dead aliens is not an easy thing to do. Some cases might be the real deal. Others could be ingenious fakes to worry the enemy. Or vice-versa. So, what do we do? Well, we definitely keep away from Fox Mulder's words: "I want to believe." In this strange world we have aliens that could be dummies. We have dummies that could really be ETs. So, I say, dig as deep as you can for the answers. If you believe there are answers...

It's worth noting that Rubio referred to the whistleblower's claims as "credible and urgent," according to the oversight findings of the Senate Intelligence Committee. Additionally, multiple military, intelligence, and contractor officials have reportedly supported the claims that the U.S. government or private companies possess craft of possible non-human origin.
It is true that while there has been a growing interest and acknowledgment of the UFO phenomenon within official circles regarding the existence of undisclosed UFO-related programs, the process of full and transparent UFO disclosure remains uncertain.
Meanwhile, on the 19th of June 2023, at the Teign Estuary, Devon England a photographer noticed something metallic-looking that came out from a cloud.
According UFO Casebook, the photographer stated that it was a flying saucer, see image above, with two black rectangular windows on the dome portion of the craft and four black openings along the bottom part of its structure. some type of force field emanating around it and as the underside of the UFO pulsated with electric blue waves made him think that maybe this craft was using electrogravitic technology as its anti-gravitationally propulsion.
He managed to capture an image of the UFO before it rotated and shot off into a nearby cloud at incredible speed.
Although the UFO issue implemented at the highest level continues, the image of the UFO at Devon, England is further proof that these craft, whether of human or non-human origin, exist.

Fossils have long provided scientists with a glimpse at the diversity of past lifeforms on planet Earth. However, not everything can be preserved in fossil form; often delicate features like hair or plumage do not fossilized, which forces scientists to use their imaginations when it comes to envisioning how these animals looked.
Even less information is known about how many ancient animals moved, so scientists have to guess based on fossil evidence. But this may soon change with help from the field of robotics. In a recent paper, researchers at the University of Utah have created robotic ammonites to help determine how these ancient creatures once moved.
BACKGROUND: WHAT ARE AMMONITES?
Belonging to the Phylum Mollusca, these extinct marine invertebrates resemble a nautilus, complete with a spiral shell. Ammonites lived around 408-65 million years ago in Earth’s ancient seas, and because these creatures are related to cuttlefish, nautilus, octopus, and squid, their soft bodies did not fossilize well, leaving mainly their shells behind for scientists to study.
These shells have helped scientists date other fossils, as well as tell scientists the approximate locations of Earth’s ancient oceans. However, there are still mysteries surrounding these creatures, especially when it comes to how they moved and why their shells were such particular shapes.
ANALYSIS: BUILDING ROBOTIC AMMONITES
To study ammonite movement, researchers at the University of Utah created robotic ammonites out of 3D-printed materials. The robots helped the researchers to better understand how the ammonites maneuvered through the water as well as the best shell shape for balanced movement. According to David Peterman, a postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Utah, “These results reiterate that there is no single optimum shell shape…My broader research goal is to provide a better understanding of these enigmatic animals, their ecosystem roles, and the evolutionary processes that shaped them.”
The researchers built three different robotic ammonites with designs based on nautilus shells and ammonite fossils. The three robots were tested in the water by doing laps. This helped the researchers see the pros and cons of each shell type. “Throughout their evolution, externally shelled cephalopods navigated their physical limitations by endlessly experimenting with variations on the shape of their coiled shells,” explained Peterman. This was illustrated in the differences in the fossils, as the spirals of the shells shifted into something similar to the ones we have today.
OUTLOOK: USING ROBOTS TO STUDY THE PAST
While this study helped the researchers to better understand the evolutionary process behind ammonite movement and shell shape, it also illustrated the utility of using robotics to study the past. Robotics can help to bring fossils to life, allowing scientists to better understand the possible movements of these ancient animals. With other advanced technology like AI and virtual reality (VR), recreating the past will be easier than ever.
AI is already helping us to determine our ancient human roots, and with the help of virtual reality, we are closing in on recreating lifelike representations of extinct animals like mammoths in a virtual setting. In the years ahead, such advances may prove to be key assets for scientists in the years ahead, who will now have access to a clearer idea of how these extinct animals once thrived on our planet.

Released wide on June 23, 2023 by Focus Features, "Asteroid City" is a joyous yet oftentimes somber affair that will provide ample kicks and giggles to Andersonian acolytes yet might seem a bit obtuse for mainstream audiences unfamiliar with his particular brand of cerebral indie indulgences.

Recalling the deluge of AI-driven homage trailers imitating writer/director Anderson's signature style of ensemble casts, pastel-colored production design, symmetrical shot compositions, esoteric wit, overly-articulate children and deadpan dialogue delivery, it's somewhat refreshing to finally get the real deal once again instead of the digital mimicry recently spread all over YouTube.
This picture-postcard Americana outing lovingly recreates a vintage 1955 desert town in the U.S. Southwest complete with golden sunset vistas, atom-bomb tests, stalwart cacti and red-rock mesa landscapes. "Asteroid City" is a stylized dream where a massive meteor crater provides the town with tourism dollars and limited renown amid its remote location and relative isolation.
The trademark nostalgic atmosphere and a jarring play-within-a-play narrative still provide enough of a cartoonish playground for the exceptional assembled cast of Jason Schwartzman, Scarlett Johansson, Tom Hanks, Jake Ryan, Jeffrey Wright, Tilda Swinton, Bryan Cranston, Edward Norton, Adrien Brody, Hong Chau, Liev Schreiber, Hope Davis, Grace Edwards, Aristou Meehan, Sophia Lillis and Jeff Goldblum.
As the story unfolds, we witness a mass gathering of super smart kids who are gathering for the Junior Stargazers and Space Cadets Convention. Here, budding geniuses vie for the top prize of a science scholarship with a range of next-generation inventions and contraptions that the U.S. government would secretly love to acquire from the eccentric prodigies, including a "Galactotron telescope" and "disintegration raygun."

During the competition festivities, a flying saucer with a silly-looking extraterrestrial arrives to steal the storied asteroid that the city of 87 citizens is most famous for. This event causes a swift military quarantine of the entire area, trapping all its assortment of quirky characters as the teen brainiacs attempt to establish communication with the outside world as the restrictions drag on with no end in sight and the adults quibble.
In terms of where "Asteroid City" falls in terms of style and content, it lies somewhere between "Moonrise Kingdom" and "The Life Aquatic With Steve Zissou," and perhaps slightly brushing up against "The Darjeeling Limited."
Core themes of existential dread and musings on death don't interrupt its vibrant bit of nostalgia that will keep select audiences smiling beyond the Looney Tunes-like UFO that drops in on this celebration of discovery to set panic in motion.

The separate story framing the main narrative finds stage actors in these exact roles back in New York in a black-and-white faux documentary for an older teleplay also titled "Asteroid City," and narrated by a dapper Rod Serling-ish Bryan Cranston.
Oscar-nominated cinematographer Robert Yeoman is the longtime Anderson collaborator who provides those familiar compositions (shot on old-fashioned Kodak 35-mm film) that the Texas-born auteur filmmaker is celebrated for, with a wealth of striking tracking shots, portrait close-ups and sweeping horizontal pans all orchestrated to a stirring score by Academy Award-winning composer Alexandre Desplat ("The Grand Budapest Hotel," "The Shape of Water").

Whistleblower David Grusch is not the only high-level government official to come forward with claims about UFOs, according to Sen. Marco Rubio. Nick Pope, an expert on UFO's, weighs in on "Banfield."

Relish in the pleasant thrumming of galaxies and stars in deep space whose data has been "sonified" into orchestral music.
Sound cannot travel through space, thanks to the lack of air to act as a medium. Instead, NASA has produced musical tones from the same telescope data that is manifested into pictures such that you can now hear the beauty of space.
"The visualization team started with the scientific observations from the various telescopes, and then applied some of the same software that Hollywood uses in their feature films to the data," Frank Summers, who is a visualization scientist at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Maryland, said in a statement.
A newly released 30-second video glides you through the five galaxies of Stephan's Quintet in the Pegasus constellation, four of which are gravitationally bound to each other at about 290 million light-years away while the fifth one is an innocent bystander roughly 39 million light-years away.

The new video is still except for a white horizontal line that combs through the galaxy group and reveals where the sounds are coming from. Each of the five galaxies lets out a big whoosh while the foreground stars hum in warm and mellowed tones of a xylophone-like instrument called a glass marimba. The musical piece is also sprinkled with higher pitches of a string instrument, which represents spikes around a star in telescope images that are formed when starlight bends around the hexagonal mirrors of NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST).
"Astronomy has always been very visual, but there's no reason why we have to represent the data through that manner alone," Kimberly Arcand, who is a visualization scientist at the Chandra X-ray Center in Massachusetts, said in the same statement. "This type of depiction is taking the scientific story of Stephan's Quintet — the deep, dense, and beautiful dataset — and translating it into an auditory experience."
As part of an ongoing project to convert telescope data into audio experiences, NASA also released sonifications of two other celestial targets by combining data from the agency's Chandra X-ray Observatory, JWST, Hubble Space Telescope, and the now-retired Spitzer Space Telescope.
The musical piece on R Aquarii, which is a binary star system of a dim white dwarf and a pulsating red giant about 650 light-years from Earth, increases in volume in proportion to the brightness of sources and their distances from the center.
At two o'clock and eight o'clock positions, you can hear a strong wind, which reflects a jet of ionized matter blasting out of the white dwarf and slamming into surrounding stellar material. Hubble's data, which are visualized as "ribbon-like arcs" in the image, can be heard as soothing sounds like those that resonate from Tibetan singing bowls while Chandra's data are represented as a "windy purr," NASA representatives wrote in an image description published Tuesday (June 20).
The soundtrack of Messier 104 (or M104) — a giant galaxy in the Virgo cluster about 28 million light-years away, is more like a whistle that shrills and mellows according to the brightness of the sources.

Translating data into sounds can help people process the information in different ways and bring to light certain aspects of data that were not noticed previously, scientists say. Such data sonifications also make the beauty of the universe accessible to visually impaired space enthusiasts.
"Sonifications offer a sensory way for me to experience the scale and potency of astronomical phenomena," Christine Malec, who is a member of the blind and partially sighted community supporting NASA's sonification project, said in the same statement. "They are an invitation to blind and partially-sighted people to listen, enjoy, and then go deeper by reading to understand what exactly is being heard."

A new carbon compound has been detected in space for the first time using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, according to the findings of an international team of researchers.
The compound, methyl cation, was discovered with help from Webb in a distant and relatively young star system some 1,350 light years away known as d203-506.
Resting in the Orion Nebula, d203-506 possesses a protoplanetary disk. Its local star in d203-506 is a red dwarf, meaning the system is subjected to constant ultraviolet light, one component that astronomers view as indicating a period most planet-forming discs will undergo.
However, the presence of methyl cation (CH3+) in d203-506 is significant here because of its role in the formation of complex carbon-based molecules, which could give rise to life.
Astronomers have long been fascinated by the presence of organic compounds in various regions of space, an area of interstellar study that Webb has helped since its launch. By studying carbon compounds and their role in the formation of life on Earth, astronomers are curious about whether its presence elsewhere in the cosmos could point to areas that are also likely to host life.
Part of what makes the detection of organic molecules a specialty for Webb involves the telescope’s sensitivity and unique spectral resolution capabilities. Specific features are discernable in celestial regions that directly correspond to the presence of chemical elements, all of which Webb is well suited for detecting.
In this case, the telescope succeeded in detecting bright features that appear as lines in the spectrum when light is emitted, otherwise known as emission lines, which were specifically attributed to the presence of CH3+.

Marie-Aline Martin-Drumel, a scientist with the University of Paris-Saclay in France and a member of the research team involved in the discovery, said in a statement that the detection of CH3+ both validates Webb’s capabilities and also “confirms the postulated central importance of CH3+ in interstellar chemistry.”
Generally, star systems that receive large amounts of UV radiation, like d203-506, would destroy organic molecules, which makes the detection of CH3+ in this region interesting. However, it isn’t necessarily unusual because UV, while potentially destructive to organic molecules, might, in this case, provide an energy source for the formation of CH3+, which promotes the production of organic compounds.
Based on their current observations, the molecules observed in d203-506 appear to differ significantly from past observations of protoplanetary disks. Notably, the research team says that they found no indications of water in the emissions data Webb allowed them to gather.
Among the team’s key findings is the role that ultraviolet radiation appears to play in altering the chemistry that naturally occurs within protoplanetary disks.
Olivier Berné, the lead author of a study describing the team’s work and a scientist with the French National Centre for Scientific Research in Toulouse, France, said this observation of the dynamics of protoplanetary disks indicates ultraviolet radiation “might actually play a critical role in the early chemical stages of the origins of life.”
The team’s findings were published in the journal Nature.

Unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, have always been a topic that garners intrigue, skepticism, and often, intense debates. With the increased acceptance of UFOs, also referred to as Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs), as a serious topic of study in recent years, this mystery has taken a rather exciting turn. Discussion forums are rife with opinions and speculations – could these be advanced military technologies? Are they evidence of extraterrestrial civilizations? Or perhaps, a sophisticated psyop by unknown entities?
One of the recurring themes in these discussions is the alleged existence of a covert operation by the Department of Defense and the Military Industrial Complex (DoD/MIC). Conspiracists suggest that not just online forum dwellers, but Congress itself is being dragged into this grand charade, leading to theories about potential secret Advanced Projects (SAPs). What’s interesting is that, while such claims might seem far-fetched, they still trigger China and other global powers to reassess their strategic plans vis-à-vis the United States.
John Lear, a controversial figure in the UFO community, claimed that the US government had a stash of at least a dozen alien spacecraft back in 1987. Interestingly, a more recent whistleblower, David Grusch, echoed a similar number of recovered crafts. Such seemingly corroborative statements naturally lead to deeper speculations – is there a seed of truth in these claims? Or is this all a carefully constructed narrative, possibly aimed at disinformation or misdirection?
There is a general consensus among some individuals that many of the whistleblowers who have come forward over the years, including names like Bob Lazar, Wolff, and Schneider, were, in fact, speaking their truth. They were possibly privy to classified projects and encountered experiences beyond mainstream understanding.
The dichotomy between the narratives around these purported alien encounters is also fascinating. On one hand, John Lear suggests that a significant portion of these extraterrestrial entities are hostile. In stark contrast, Dr. Steven Greer, another prominent figure in the field, insists that all such beings are benign, and it’s the media or false flag operations that paint them as a threat.
And while the discussion ranges from grim speculations about aliens eating humans to comical references to The Twilight Zone episode – To Serve Man, a more grounded perspective suggests that the possibility of extraterrestrial life is no longer a fringe belief. Given our rapid technological progress and the vastness of the cosmos, it is statistically plausible that we are not alone.
Yet, despite the growing acceptance and intriguing testimonies, the field is not without its skeptics. Many demand irrefutable evidence, expressing fatigue over unsubstantiated claims. As one user notes, “I just really want actual proof for once, something undeniable.“

We kennen Mars allemaal als de rode stoffige planeet met zijn witte poolkappen. Maar wat als we hem eens door een andere bril bekijken? Dat is exact wat de Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) ruimtesonde doet. Die bestudeert Mars door ernaar te kijken in ultraviolet. Het resultaat is Mars zoals je hem nooit gezien hebt: extra buitenaards.
De Mars Atmosphere and Volatile EvolutioN (MAVEN) ruimtesonde bevindt zich al sinds september 2014 in een baan rond Mars. Aanvankelijk zou de missieduur van MAVEN twee jaar zijn, maar ondertussen is die voor onbepaalde tijd verlengd omdat hij nog steeds in uitstekende staat verkeert. In de afgelopen negen jaar heeft de sonde al voor heel wat wetenschappelijke resultaten gezorgd.*
Het doel van MAVEN is om inzicht te krijgen in de atmosferische processen die plaatsvinden op Mars. Een van de instrumenten waarmee de ruimtesonde naar de planeet kijkt, maakt gebruik van een golflengte die onzichtbaar is voor het menselijk oog: ultraviolet (UV). Door gebruik te maken van UV kunnen we verschillende gassen zien en hoe die met elkaar reageren.
Hiermee heeft MAVEN bijvoorbeeld al vreemde aurora’s ontdekt die hoog boven Mars dansen in de atmosfeer. Daarnaast zag de ruimtesonde ook een onzichtbare gloed die ’s nachts in de lucht ontstaat door atomen die opnieuw samengaan nadat ze eerder tijdens de dag uit elkaar zijn gesplitst door zonlicht.
Nu heeft NASA nieuwe afbeeldingen vrijgegeven die drie ultraviolette golflengten laten zien, weergegeven als rood, groen en blauw. De twee afbeeldingen werden zes maanden na elkaar gemaakt en laten seizoensveranderingen in de atmosfeer van de planeet zien.
De eerste (zie hierboven), vastgelegd in juli 2022, toont het zuidelijk halfrond in de zomer, rond de tijd van de zomerzonnewende (en winterzonnewende voor het noordelijk halfrond). De atmosfeer lijkt redelijk helder, met wolken die de ravijnen vullen. De omvang van de zuidelijke poolijskap, zichtbaar in spierwit, bevindt zich op een dieptepunt in de zomer. Waterdamp kan je op zeer grote hoogte waarnemen, veroorzaakt door zomerhitte en stofstormen.
Het tweede beeldje maakte MAVEN zes maanden later, in januari 2023. De seizoenen op Mars zijn twee keer zo lang als de seizoenen op aarde, dus dat betekent dat de opname iets na de lente-equinox op het noordelijk halfrond is gemaakt.
Door het veranderen van de seizoenen zie je veel witte wolken rond het noordelijk halfrond en een opeenhoping van ozon die paars schijnt. Dit gas hoopt zich op in de atmosfeer in de koude nachten van de winter en verdwijnt tijdens de lente door te reageren met waterdamp. Die waterdamp is afkomstig van het poolijs dat door opwarming verdwijnt.
De sonde heeft al geweldige dingen bereikt in zijn tijd in een baan om Mars, en wetenschappers hopen dat hij nog lang blijft werken.
