Sedona, Arizona, Has the Most UFO Sightings in the Entire USA
Based on a new study, the city of Sedona, Arizona, has the most UFO sightings in all of the United States. While it’s not a large city with a population of 10,377 recorded this year, it does surprisingly have an exceptionally large amount of UFO sightings.
UFO sightings have been recorded for a very long time. In fact, one of the earliest documented sightings in the United States was reported back in 1904. The U.S. government then began investigating the sightings in 1948 as part of Project Blue Book which lasted until 1969. And there have been a lot more alleged observations in recent years with a total of 6,281 in 2019 and 7,267 in 2020.
Based on data collected by Cheryl Costa and Linda Miller (they are the authors of “UFO Sightings Desk Reference: United States of America 2001-2020”), 24/7 Tempo has ranked the top locations in the country for people witnessing UFOs.
They revealed that Sedona, Arizona, had a total of 166 sightings between 2001 and 2020. This calculates to 1,608 UFO observations for every 100,000 residents.
As for why the small city has so many sightings, there really isn’t a clear answer except that since it is in the desert, locals have a great unobstructed view of the sky. There are numerous leading observatories and flight schools in the state, so some of the sightings may have been student pilots out practicing their flying skills. Additionally, the unexplained objects could have been nothing more than flares being dropped by military aircrafts.
However, not all of the encounters can be easily explained as just this past February, a pilot and the crew of American Airlines Flight 2292 (Airbus A320) flying to Phoenix, Arizona, from Cincinnati, Ohio, witnessed an unexplained object traveling at a speed of 400 knots at an altitude of 36,000 feet. They described it as being “a long cylindrical object that almost looked like a cruise missile” and traveling at an excessively fast speed. While it wasn’t viewed directly on top of Sedona, it was a very interesting sighting by a pilot and crew members on their way to the state.
With Sedona ranking first as the city with the most UFO sightings, Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, is listed second with a total of 400 observations between 2001 and 2020 – calculated as being 1,223 sightings per 100,000 residents. Rounding out the top five are North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, with 1,111 sightings per 100,000 residents; Patterson, California, with 861 sightings per 100,000 residents; and Naples, Florida, with 779 sightings per 100,000 residents.
At the other end of the list, Cincinnati, Ohio, ranked last (50th) on the list with 75 sightings per 100,000 residents.

There’s a chance that the world governments have a secret pact to exploit the moon for its minerals. This pact may be signed by other ET species residing in the Universe, which could explain why this alliance has a secretive nature. However, since greed is a common trait among humans, there shouldn’t be long until someone is excluded from this alliance, and eventually, disclose this secret project to humanity.
Countless rumors speak of an alien base located on the dark side of the moon – the side we never get to see, and it’s no secret that, in 2009, NASA publicly bombed a portion of the moon for unclear reasons. Other leaked images originating from NASA’s headquarters reveal different structures found up there that are likely to be artificial in nature.
Among the most renowned people to speak of this Moon, conspiracy is Milton Cooper, a Naval Intelligence Officer who disclosed that the US Navy Intelligence Community knows of the alien base. The term used to describe it is “Luna,” and according to Cooper, its main objective is to mine the underground for certain materials. He also speaks of a massive mother ship found in the vicinity of the moon used by the aliens to store up materials, and also travel to Earth in small “flying saucers” found on the main ship.
“LUNA: The alien base on the far side of the Moon. It was seen and filmed by the Apollo astronauts. A base, a mining operation using very large machines, and the very large alien craft describing in sightings reports as mother ships exist there,” Milton Cooper revealed.
So, is it possible that what the Chinese revealed is, in fact, a small fraction of the mining operation facility called Luna? After all, it strongly resembles the drilling devices used by our own species, and there is no one to debunk it as being a natural formation.

I have a video of the second part of the incident. Toward lambert airport in st Louis mo about 25 red blinking lights shot out from that direction I’m on the 14th floor of an apt building on the balcony outside and it’s right in front of me and I can’t make out what the red blinking lights were I thought at first they were fighter jets because as they were ascending at great speed into the sky i could hear like a jet engine but it wasn’t coming from them individually sounded like there was a big something in the sky at the same time. Also why I don’t think they were jets is because of what they did next and this is the part I got on video. The lights all stopped in mid air and they started going around in a curled blinking now more of a clear light. I’ve never seen anything like it in my life and have heard nothing about it. Don’t suppose a lot of people are awake and observant at 430am but I was and I saw this and need an explanation some how. That was a blinking light on top of one of the buildings but it was not emitting light a over where it was blinking and I see that light everybody and it blinks and never was something like this seen.

Whether you want to believe, or not, Wisconsin has a history of UFO sightings and odd occurrences. In fact, we rank 21st in the country for most reported UFO sightings.
While we do get a lot of reports, it could be because so many investigators are collecting them, or perhaps because Wisconsinites are more comfortable reporting sightings according to paranormal researcher and author Chad Lewis.
Lewis was featured in an article about UFOs and paranormal hot spots in Wisconsin for this month’s Milwaukee Magazine. He shared four major sightings in Wisconsin you probably didn't know about:
Sightings across the Midwest, late 1900s
According to Lewis, people of downtown Milwaukee reported seeing large, quick moving, unknown objects in 1896 and 1897. People could then follow the airships city to city by reading newspapers that covered it from Milwaukee to Chicago.

"In 1896 and 1897 the U.S. had the largest UFO flap in America’s history," says Lewis. "Thousands of people in hundreds of Midwestern cities saw these giant airships, as they were called, and the people of Milwaukee were no different. "
"It wasn't as though somebody was flying a kite, or a misidentification of a star or a planet, or an embellishment or a hoax," Lewis says. "There was something there, but what it was, nobody could agree upon it."
1947 Mount Rainier Sighting
While the sighting of nine saucer-shaped objects took place in Washington state, Lewis says this event influenced modern concepts of UFOs for people in Wisconsin and around the country.
"The Kenneth Arnold sighting really set the UFO field on fire. One, we got the term 'flying saucer' from it, but also here was this credible, trained observer, a pilot talking about what he saw in technical terms, scientific terms of speed, distance, and estimates," Lewis says. "And I think it gave the general public a wide belief that maybe there's something to this."
Lake Superior Sightings, 1960s & 70s
Multiple sightings of UFOs near Lake Superior prompted the U.S Government to send jets from a nearby airbase to chase after objects spotted over the lake.
"It makes sense that if these things truly are unidentified flying objects or unidentified aerial phenomena, you would think that the [Department of] Defense would like to know what they are — whether they're hoaxes or competing countries with their technology, or something not of this world," says Lewis. However, he thinks that investigating a sighting doesn't necessarily give it credibility. "In fact, most people would say you should be looking into it to decide what's real and what's not," says Lewis.
1961 Eagle River Sighting
This interaction between an aircraft full of aliens and Joe Simonton, part-time plumber and chicken farmer, may be one of the weirdest encounters you'll ever hear about. According to Lewis, Simonton was having a late breakfast when he saw a craft descend into his yard and decided to investigate.
"And when he got there, an opening appeared on the craft and one of the inhabitants — the pilot, the alien, the man, whatever it was — came to the front and Simonton could see a couple of identical looking creatures or people inside," Lewis explains.
Simonton described the aliens as being very small — dark haired, dark-eyed, dark skin. One had a jug, and Simonton realized through non-verbal communication that they needed water. He filled up their water jug, and they in turn traded "saucer cakes" that they had cooked. "Apparently, the saucer cakes were the worst tasting pancake he'd ever had," says Lewis.
The craft closed up and flew off, but once Simonton reported the incident, thousands of people descended on his farm to have a look at the property and the pancakes, and it even caught the attention of Project Blue Book for further investigation.
UFOs are not all that uncommon for Wisconsin. In fact, Lewis says the sheer weirdness of Wisconsin reports range from sightings of vampires, to Bigfoot and sea serpents.
"We have everything here in Wisconsin," Lewis says. "It really is very strange that we have such an assortment of oddities in our state."

Her publications include books, and works in peer-reviewed scientific journals, magazines, and newspapers.
Her photography has been shown on television and in magazines, books, and newspapers. She served on the MUFON Board of Directors (1993 to 2000) and is a MUFON consultant in physiology and astronomy and a field investigator. As the MUFON Director of Publications, she co-edited eight symposium proceedings. She was a founding member of the Mid-Ohio Research Associates (MORA) and an editor for the Ohio UFO Notebook. Her UFO publications include articles in the MUFON UFO Journal, the International UFO Reporter, and FATE magazine. Astronomers have found hints of what could be the first planet ever to be discovered outside our galaxy.
Nearly 5,000 "exoplanets" - worlds orbiting stars beyond our Sun - have been found so far, but all of these have been located within the Milky Way galaxy.
The possible Saturn-sized planet discovered by Nasa's Chandra X-Ray Telescope is in the Messier 51 galaxy.
This is located some 28 million light-years away from the Milky Way.
This new result is based on transits, where the passage of a planet in front of a star blocks some of the star's light and yields a characteristic dip in brightness that can be detected by telescopes.
This general technique has already been used to find thousands of exoplanets.
Dr Rosanne Di Stefano and colleagues searched for dips in the brightness of X-rays received from a type of object known as an X-ray bright binary.
These objects typically contain a neutron star or black hole pulling in gas from a closely orbiting companion star. The material near the neutron star or black hole becomes superheated and glows at X-ray wavelengths.
Because the region producing bright X-rays is small, a planet passing in front of it could block most or all of the rays, making the transit easier to spot.
The team members used this technique to detect the exoplanet candidate in a binary system called M51-ULS-1.
"The method we developed and employed is the only presently implementable method to discover planetary systems in other galaxies," Dr Di Stefano, from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics in Cambridge, US, told BBC News.
"It is a unique method, uniquely well-suited to finding planets around X-ray binaries at any distance from which we can measure a light curve."

Future planet-hunting
This binary contains a black hole or neutron star orbiting a companion star with a mass about 20 times that of the Sun. A neutron star is the collapsed core of what had once been a massive star.
The transit lasted about three hours, during which the X-ray emission decreased to zero. Based on this and other information, the astronomers estimate that the candidate planet would be around the size of Saturn, and orbit the neutron star or black hole at about twice the distance Saturn lies from the Sun.
Dr Di Stefano said the techniques that have been so successful for finding exoplanets in the Milky Way break down when observing other galaxies. This is partly because the great distances involved reduce the amount of light which reaches the telescope and also mean that many objects are crowded into a small space (as viewed from Earth), making it difficult to resolve individual stars.
With X-rays, she said, "there may be only several dozen sources spread out over the entire galaxy, so we can resolve them. In addition, a subset of these are so bright in X-rays that we can measure their light curves.
"Finally, the huge emission of X-rays comes from a small region that can be substantially or (as in our case) totally blocked by a passing planet."

The researchers freely admit that more data is needed to verify their interpretation.
One challenge is that the planet candidate's large orbit means it would not cross in front of its binary partner again for about 70 years, quashing any attempts to make a follow-up observation in the near-term.
One other possible explanation that the astronomers considered is that the dimming has been caused by a cloud of gas and dust passing in front of the X-ray source.
However, they think this is unlikely, because the characteristics of the event do not match up with the properties of a gas cloud.
"We know we are making an exciting and bold claim so we expect that other astronomers will look at it very carefully," said co-author Julia Berndtsson of Princeton University, New Jersey.
"We think we have a strong argument, and this process is how science works."
Dr Di Stefano said that the new generation of optical and infrared telescopes would not be able to compensate for the problems of crowding and dimness, so observations at X-ray wavelengths would likely remain the primary method for detecting planets in other galaxies.
However, she said a method known as microlensing might also hold promise for identifying extra-galactic planets.

We’re getting accustomed to things from science fiction novels and movies becoming reality – entire books have been devoted to the real inventions from ‘Star Trek’. In ‘Journey to the Center of the Earth’, Jules Verne created a world deep inside our planet, but scientists have adamantly countered that Earth has a solid inner core made of iron allow surrounded by a liquid outer core. While we have no definitive evidence of either one, most people support the latter … except Rhett Butler. No, not that one – this Rhett Butler is a geophysicist at the Hawai’i Institute of Geophysics and Planetology and author of a new study which presents the theory that Earth’s core is mushy and perhaps even liquid. If this theory holds true, could a hollow spot be found?
Well?
“Illuminated by earthquakes in the crust and upper mantle, and observed by seismic observatories at Earth’s surface, seismology offers the only direct way to investigate the inner core and its processes.”
In a University of Hawai’i press release, Butler explains how he and co-author Seiji Tsuboi, research scientist at the Japan Agency for Marine-Earth Science and Technology, got around the impossible-yet-most-definitive option of drilling a 3,200-mile tunnel to the center of the Earth by instead using seismographs to analyze how earthquake waves travel from one side of the Earth to the other. If the center is solid, the waves should be predictably distorted by the iron core. They selected five earthquakes which had seismometers directly opposite them on the other side of the planet – the pairings were in Tonga–Algeria, Indonesia–Brazil and three between Chile–China (see photo below). Butler then fed the data into Japan’s Earth Simulator supercomputer and crunched the numbers. The results would have made Jules Verne smile.
“In stark contrast to the homogeneous, soft-iron alloys considered in all Earth models of the inner core since the 1970s, our models suggest there are adjacent regions of hard, soft and liquid or mushy iron alloys in the top 150 miles of the inner core. This puts new constraints upon the composition, thermal history and evolution of Earth.”

Does this open up the possibility that there are hollow spots inside the Earth that could match at least some of the science fiction of Verne or the theories of hollow Earthers? That’s probably unlikely – but Butler just smashed the solid core theory that has solidly persisted for over 50 years so it’s worth feeding more data into his supercomputer and see what the models predict. What would Jules Verne say?

Archaeologists believe they have discovered the first ever depiction of a biblical plant engraved on an ancient amethyststone near Israel’s City of David. This biblical plant is known as the Balm of Gilead (also called Bosem, and Balsam).
The stone was found in a drainage ditch that is located next to Jerusalem’s Western Wall when archaeologists and volunteers were digging through it at the Emek Tzurim National Park. It dates back to the time of the Second Temple around 2,000 years ago.
An amethyst is a popular stone in jewelry.
Eli Shukron, who is a former archaeologist with the Israel Antiquities Authority, described the location where the stone was discovered, “Jerusalem’s primary drainage channel was built under the pilgrimage road. The pilgrimage road started from the Pool of Siloam in the City of David and went up to the Temple on the Temple Mount of the Second Temple period. Apparently, this ring with the seal fell into the drainage ditch 2,000 years ago.”
Shukron went on to explain the incredible stone which measures 10 millimeters in length by 5 millimeters in width, “It is a stone seal made of semi-precious amethyst stone with an engraving of a dove and a branch of a tree with fruit on the branch.” “Once we found the seal with the branch and the fruit, we hypothesized that it was the biblical persimmon fruit plant as mentioned in the Bible and in the sources of the Second Temple period and the Byzantine period.” “What was surprising was that the branch is a branch with fruits that are not recognized from other seals from that period.” The tree and the dove represent success and good fortune.

The 55-millimeter crab was discovered in the jungles of Southeast Asia and is the first-ever to be found that lived among the dinosaurs.
'The discovery provides new insights into the evolution of these crustaceans and when they spread around the world,' researchers at Harvard University, who analyzed the amber, shared in a press release.

Javier Luque, a post-doctoral researcher in the Harvard Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology, said in a statement: 'If we were to reconstruct the crab tree of life — putting together a genealogical family tree — and do some molecular DNA analysis, the prediction is that nonmarine crabs split from their marine ancestors more than 125 million years ago.
'But there's a problem because the actual fossil record— the one that we can touch - is way young at 75 to 50 million years old… So this new fossil and its mid-Cretaceous age allows us to bridge the gap between the predicted molecular divergence and the actual fossil record of crabs.'
The specimen was originally found by miners in 2015, which recently shared it with the Longyin Amber Museum in China, allowing the Harvard team to take a deeper look.
The fossil was dubbed Cretapsara athanata, 'the immortal Cretaceous spirit of the clouds and waters,' in honor of the South and Southeast Asian mythological spirits.

To their surprise, not a single hair was missing, the researchers said.
'The more we studied the fossil, the more we realized that this animal was very special in many ways,' said Luque.
The analysis showed that the crab did not have lung tissue, only well-developed gills indicating the animal did not completely live on land.
'Now we were dealing with an animal that is likely not marine, but also not fully terrestrial,' Luque said. 'In the fossil record, nonmarine crabs evolved 50 million years ago, but this animal is twice that age.'
The researchers hypothesize that the crab was a juvenile that lived in freshwater or it may have been a semi-terrestrial juvenile crab. It may have migrated onto land from water, similar the iconic Christmas Island red crabs, where land dwelling mothers release their offspring into the ocean, before they return to land.
The researchers now believe that an event known as the Cretaceous Crab Revolution —when crabs (true or not) diversified worldwide and started evolving their characteristic, crabby-looking body forms — happened more times than previously thought.
This new research brings the tally of when different crab species independently evolved to live outside their marine habitat to at least 12 separate times.

Luque, who has been studying crab evolution for more than a decade, said he first became aware of the specimen in 2018 and has been obsessed with it since.
'They are all over the world, they make good aquarium pets, they're delicious for those of us who eat them, and they're celebrated in parades and festivals, and they even have their own constellation,' Luque said.
'Crabs in general are fascinating, and some are so bizarre looking — from tiny little pea-shaped crabs to humongous coconut crabs.
'The diversity of form among crabs is captivating the imagination of the scientific and non-scientific public alike, and right now people are excited to learn more about such a fascinating group that are not dinosaurs. This is a big moment for crabs.'
A very ancient crab has been found preserved in amberdating back about 100 million years and has been described as being a “spectacular” find. There have been several previous discoveries of living creatures found in amber but they were all from land. This newly discovered crab specimen is actually the oldest ever discovery of an aquatic creature found trapped in amber. Furthermore, it is the most complete fossil of a crab that’s ever been found.
This new species of crab, which has been named Cretapsara athanata, was initially found in Kachin State in the northern part of Myanmar. The Longyin Amber Museum became in possession of the amber specimen in 2015 when they got it from a vendor in Tengchong, China, close to the Myanmar border. It has recently been analyzed by scientists from China, Canada, and the United States.

The crab was exceptionally tiny (probably a baby), measuring just 5 millimeters in length. Computerized tomography scans showed it in greater detail, such as its antennae as well as its gills and fine hairs on its mouth.
Javier Luque, who is a postdoctoral researcher in the Department of Organismic and Evolutionary Biology at Harvard University, described the incredible condition that the crab was in, “The specimen is spectacular, it is one of a kind. It’s absolutely complete and is not missing a single hair on the body, which is remarkable.”
As for how a crab ended up trapped in amber, the experts believe that it probably lived in fresh water or brackish water that is found on the ground in forests. It was more than likely not a marine crab but not completely land-based. It may have possibly been migrating onto land after it was born in the water and that’s how it might have ended up in the amber. Fossils from crabs dating back to more than 200 million years ago have previously been found; however, remains of non-marine crabs are very rare and mostly incomplete when they are discovered.

Additionally, the discovery proves that crabs transitioned from the sea to land and fresh water while the dinosaurs were still living – a transformation previously thought to have occurred during the mammal era. “In the fossil record, non-marine crabs evolved 50 million years ago, but this animal is twice that age,” Luque noted.

"Who am I to say planet Earth is the only location of a life form that is civilized and organized like ours?

During an appearance this week at the University of Virginia, NASA boss Bill Nelson made some eyebrow-raising remarks about a possible connection between military sightings of unidentified flying objects and the search for alien life.
“I’ve talked to those pilots and they know they saw something, and their radars locked on to it,” Nelson told the crowd at the university, which is where he got his law degree. “And they don’t know what is. And we don’t know what it is. We hope it’s not an adversary here on Earth that has that kind of technology.”
That’s an interesting analysis on its own. But look what he said next, when he started directly speculating about the search for life beyond Earth:
“But it’s something,” Nelson added during the wide-ranging event. “And so this is a mission that we’re constantly looking, ‘Who is out there?’ Who are we?’ How did we get here? How did we become as we are? How did we develop? How did we civilize? And are those same conditions out there in a universe that has billions of other suns and billions of other galaxies?’ It’s so large I can’t conceive it.”
Provocatively, Nelson even went on to conjecture that alien civilizations could be found in a parallel universe.
“Now there are even theories that there might be other universes,” Nelson added. “And if that’s the case, who am I to say planet Earth is the only location of a life form that is civilized and organized like ours?”
Obviously, Nelson isn’t claiming to have any specific information, and in all likelihood he was just having some fun during a public appearance. It’s also not Nelson’s first time opining that there’s almost certainly alien life out there somewhere.
But it worth contrasting Nelson’s freewheeling style with that of his immediate predecessor, Steve Jurczyk, who was much more reserved and circumspect on the topic. Take this interview he did with Futurism earlier this year:
“You know, it’s, uh, hard to say,” he told us with a laugh when asked about the search for alien life. “But you know, part of the Mars mission is looking for past signs of life, and we’re detecting planets around other stars, right? With Kepler and eventually with the James Webb Space Telescope and other missions, we want to do direct imaging of exoplanets, planets around other stars. So we’re advancing our knowledge there.”

DNA reveals surprise ancestry of mysterious Chinese mummies
The genomes of 13 remarkably preserved 4,000-year-old mummies from the Tarim Basin suggest they weren’t migrants who brought technology from the west, as previously supposed.

Since their discovery a century ago, hundreds of naturally preserved mummies found in China’s Tarim Basin have been a mystery to archaeologists. Some thought the Bronze Age remains were from migrants from thousands of kilometres to the west, who had brought farming practices to the area. But now, a genomic analysis suggests they were indigenous people who may have adopted agricultural methods from neighbouring groups.
As they report today in Nature1, researchers have traced the ancestry of these early Chinese farmers to Stone Age hunter-gatherers who lived in Asia some 9,000 years ago. They seem to have been genetically isolated, but despite this had learnt to raise livestock and grow grains in the same way as other groups.
The study hints at “the really diverse ways in which populations move and don’t move, and how ideas can spread with, but also through, populations”, says co-author Christina Warinner, a molecular archaeologist at Harvard University in Boston, Massachusetts.
The finding demonstrates that cultural exchange doesn’t always go hand in hand with genetic ties, says Michael Frachetti, an archaeologist at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. “Just because those people are trading, doesn’t necessarily mean that they are marrying one another or having children,” he says.
Perfect preservation environment
Starting in the early twentieth century, the mummies were found in cemeteries belonging to the so-called Xiaohe culture, which are scattered across the Taklamakan Desert in the Xinjiang region of China. The desert “is one of the most hostile places on Earth”, says Alison Betts, an archaeologist at the University of Sydney in Australia.
Here, bodies had been buried in boat-shaped coffins wrapped in cattle hide. The hot, arid and salty environment of the desert naturally preserved them, keeping everything from hair to clothing perfectly intact. Before the latest study, “we knew an awful lot about these people, physically, but we knew nothing about who they were and why they were there”, says Betts.
The mummies — which were buried over a period of 2,000 years or more — date to a significant time in Xinjiang’s history, when ancient communities were shifting from hunter-gatherers to farmers, she adds.
The harsh desert conditions preserved the bodies as natural mummies.

Some of the later mummies were buried with woollen fabrics and clothing similar to those of cultures found to the west. The graves also contained millet, wheat, animal bones and dairy products — evidence of agricultural and pastoral technologies characteristic of cultures in other regions of Eurasia, which led researchers to hypothesize that these people were originally migrants from the west, who had passed through Siberia, Afghanistan or Central Asia.
The researchers behind the latest study — based in China, South Korea, Germany and the United States — took DNA from the mummies to test these ideas, but found no evidence to support them.
They sequenced the genomes of 13 individuals who lived between 4,100 and 3,700 years ago and whose bodies were found in the lowest layers of the Tarim Basin cemeteries in southern Xinjiang, as well as another 5 mummies from hundreds of kilometres away in northern Xinjiang, who lived between 5,000 and 4,800 years ago.
They then compared the genetic profiles of these people with previously sequenced genomes from more than 100 ancient groups of people, and those of more than 200 modern populations, from around the world.
Two groups of people
They found that the northern Xinjiang individuals shared some parts of their genomes with Bronze Age migrants from the Altai Mountains of Central Asia who lived about 5,000 years ago — supporting an earlier hypothesis.
But the 13 people from the Tarim Basin did not share this ancestry. They seem to be solely related to hunter-gatherers who lived in southern Siberia and what is now northern Kazakhstan some 9,000 years ago, says co-author Choongwon Jeong, a population and evolutionary geneticist at Seoul National University. The northern Xinjiang individuals also shared some of this ancestry.
Evidence of dairy products was found alongside the youngest mummies from the upper layers of cemeteries in the Tarim Basin, so the researchers analysed calcified dental plaque on the teeth of some of the older mummies to see how far back dairy farming went. In the plaque, they found milk proteins from cattle, sheep and goats, suggesting that even the earliest settlers here consumed dairy products. “This founding population had already incorporated dairy pastoralism into their way of life,” says Warinner.
But the study raises many more questions about how the people of the Xiaohe culture got these technologies, from where and from whom, says Betts. “That’s the next thing we need to try and resolve.”

Evidence of ancient life has been found in a ruby for the first time, a new study claims.
Researchers in Canada say they've discovered carbon residue that was once ancient life, encased in a 2.5 billion-year-old ruby.
During this time in Earth's history, oxygen was not abundant in the atmosphere, and life existed only as microorganisms and algae films.
The ancient gemstone, described as 'really unique', was taken from the North Atlantic Craton portion that covers southern Greenland.
The North Atlantic Craton is an ancient part of Earth’s continental crust that reaches around the top of the northern hemisphere, from Scotland to the Canadian region of Labrador, deep underground.

The research was led by Chris Yakymchuk, professor of Earth and Environmental Sciences at University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada.
WHAT IS RUBY?
Ruby is a gemstone that ranges pink to red in colour.
It's a variety of the mineral corundum (aluminium oxide), which gives it its colour.
The word 'ruby' comes from the Latin word 'ruber', meaning 'red'.
Fine-quality rubies are some of the most expensive gemstones, with record prices over $1 million per carat.

Greenland, where the sample was found, contains the oldest known deposits of rubies in the world. This particular sample contained graphite, a mineral made of pure carbon.
'The graphite inside this ruby is really unique,' said Yakymchuk. 'It's the first time we've seen evidence of ancient life in ruby-bearing rocks.
'The presence of graphite also gives us more clues to determine how rubies formed at this location, something that is impossible to do directly based on a ruby's colour and chemical composition.'
Rubies are part of the corundum family of gemstones. Chromium is the trace element that causes ruby's red, which ranges from an orangy red to a purplish red.
The strength of ruby's red depends on how much chromium is present, the Gemological Institute of America explains. The more chromium, the stronger the red colour.
The presence of graphite in this sample allowed the researchers to analyse isotopic composition of the carbon atoms, which measures the relative amounts of different carbon atoms.
More than 98 per cent of all carbon atoms have a mass of 12 atomic mass units, but a few carbon atoms are heavier, with a mass of 13 or 14 atomic mass units.

'Living matter preferentially consists of the lighter carbon atoms because they take less energy to incorporate into cells,' said Yakymchuk.
'Based on the increased amount of carbon-12 in this graphite, we concluded that the carbon atoms were once ancient life, most likely dead microorganisms such as cyanobacteria.'
Cyanobacteria are photosynthesizing bacteria that may produce cyanotoxins that can cause illness in animals. Also known as 'blue-green algae', they form mats on the surface of water.
During this study, Yakymchuk's team discovered that this graphite not only links the gemstone to ancient life but was also likely necessary for this ruby to exist at all.
The graphite changed the chemistry of the surrounding rocks to create favourable conditions for ruby growth.
Without it, the team's models showed that it would not have been possible to form rubies in this location.

A fragment of the North Atlantic Craton (NAC) was found by geologists who were sifting through diamond exploration samples from the southern Baffin Island, Canada.
The NAC is an ancient part of Earth’s continental crust that reaches around the top of the northern hemisphere, from Scotland to the Canadian region of Labrador, deep underground.
Researchers believe the NAC is up to 2.7 billion years old before its continental plate broke up around 150 million years ago.
The samples were provided by Peregrine Diamonds, a Canada-based mineral exploration company, which was acquired by jewellers De Beers in 2018.
