Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

The Pentagon has been quietly investigating unidentified flying objects since 2007. The fact that they think they might exist is good news to those who claim to have seen them
In June, the US government published a long-awaited report into UFOs. Although the report did not, as many had hoped, admit to the existence of little green men, it did reveal that not only were objects appearing in our skies that the Pentagon – which controls the US military – could not explain, but some clearly pose “a safety of flight issue and may pose a challenge to US national security”.
The Pentagon also revealed that it has been taking UFOs so seriously that in 2007 it discreetly set up the Advanced Aerospace Threat Identification Program (AATIP), which has been gathering data on Unexplained Aerial Phenomena (UAPs) ever since.
The unclassified version of the report (there was also a classified version seen only by US lawmakers) found “no clear indications that there is any non-terrestrial explanation” for the sightings. But neither did it rule it out. The report offered five typically mundane possible explanations for the UFOs and, crucially, one catch-all “other” bin.
It’s that “other” bin that has arrested the attention of stargazers and conspiracy theorists. If the US military has been quietly and seriously investigating UFOs (or, as the Pentagon would have it, UAPs) since 2007, and if the Pentagon’s official report cannot rule out the existence of extraterrestrials, is it time we looked again at claims of close encounters and the people who have made them?
Enthusiasm for UFOs and ETs has permeated popular culture ever since a US air force balloon crashed near Roswell in 1947. Conspiracy theorists confused the balloon for a UFO; the US government did a lousy job debunking those claims, and they quickly captured the public’s imagination. Fast forward to 1961, when Barney and Betty Hill told the world’s first alien abduction story.
Andrew Abeyta, professor of psychology at Rutgers University, co-authored We Are Not Alone, a study into why some of us want to believe in aliens. Abeyta explains that belief in aliens is akin to religiosity: unfounded beliefs in unfalsifiable ideas, which require a leap of faith. “People have a need to feel like their lives are meaningful, and these beliefs might suggest that there’s something bigger out there; there’s something more important going on,” Abeyta says
I tell Abeyta about an interview I carried out with a young man in Florida. The man, who did not want to be named, described an ambiguous close encounter that took place during his sleep. When I asked him what he preferred the truth to be – a real encounter or merely a vivid dream – the young man said he would prefer it to be true because that would mean he was “special”.
“I can imagine being a protagonist in an alien-abduction story seems pretty meaningful, like a meaningful achievement, an accomplishment,” Abeyta says. That feeling of specialness plays an important role in these stories. “Feeling like your unexplained experience is a result of an alien abduction just seems more exciting and more important than a natural explanation.”
Still, the topic of alien encounters remains sensitive. I discovered just how sensitive when author Whitley Strieber, who some claim was abducted by non-humans in 1985, terminated our call after learning that I had not read his books. In a subsequent email, he wrote: “I don’t know if I was abducted by aliens or not. The whole point of my work is to describe what happened to me and attempt to understand what it was. I was turned into ‘alien abductee Whitley Strieber’ by the media. That is not my position.” He added: “You are lost in space when it comes to this subject, my friend – all of you.”
After I got off on the wrong foot with Strieber, though, he did come back and introduce me to highly decorated former US navy cryptologist Matthew Roberts. He was stationed on the aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt when fighter jets recorded the infamous “Gimbal” and “Go Fast” videos of unexplained objects off the Florida coast during 2015, which went a long way to prompting the Pentagon’s UFO report.
Now retired from the military, Roberts is unmoved by the debunkers. “These things are picked up by multiple sensors that are sometimes from different manufacturers, so to think that they would all be glitching in the same way at the same time would just be impossible – it just doesn’t happen that way.”
Mick West, a science writer and video game programmer turned conspiracy-theory debunker, offers his own, more down-to-earth explanations for the objects: arguing that mundane things – tech glitches, camera glare, balloons and birds – are more likely than aliens.
However, now even the Pentagon has conceded there’s more to UFOs than that. In its nine-page report it states: “Most of the UAP reported probably do represent physical objects given that a majority of UAP were registered across multiple sensors, to include radar, infrared, electro-optical, weapon seekers and visual observation.” In other words, there was something out there and the images were not technical glitches. I ask Roberts about a theory put forward by West that the Gimbal object was glare caused by a nearby aircraft. “All aircraft – nationally, internationally – have to broadcast who they are. If they’re not broadcasting that, that’s very unusual. Mick West, bless his soul, he has never been in the military,” he says.
Roberts explains that, after the 9/11 terrorist attacks, unidentified air tracks escalate very quickly. “It will go to the captain, it will go to the admiral, and they’ll want to know what that is because the thought would immediately be: ‘Is this a commercial airliner? Has it been hijacked?’ We’re not as incompetent as Mick West would have you believe. If something is unidentified, it absolutely has to be identified immediately.”
Despite the debunkers and proliferation of more mundane explanations for UFOs, reports of close encounters have persisted for decades. Terry Lovelace, a retired assistant attorney general in Vermont, USA, and author of Incident at Devil’s Den, kept his abduction to himself for 40 years due to fear of losing his job. He had a close encounter in 1977 while serving in the US air force.
Lovelace, now 67, was on a camping trip in Devil’s Den state park in northern Arkansas with a friend and colleague named Toby when things got strange. They were sitting around a fire, struggling to chat over the din of buzzing crickets and croaking tree frogs before everything went quiet. “That sounds kind of clichéd – out of a movie – but that is exactly what happened to us,” he says.
Three bright lights appeared on the horizon and moved in their direction. When the lights were overhead, they could see that they were emanating from a black triangular prism as wide as two city blocks.
A blue laser beam darted over them, which Lovelace thought was scanning them. When it shut off, they became sleepy. Next thing, he woke and saw Toby peering out of the tent. The triangle was hovering above what appeared to be a dozen children standing in a meadow below them. “What are these kids doing out here in the middle of the night?” said Lovelace.
“They aren’t little kids. Don’t you remember they took us and they hurt us?” Toby answered.
Lovelace says the moment Toby said that, fragmented memories of being inside the UFO flashed in his mind. Years later, hypnosis helped him fill in more blanks and he recalled actually encountering creatures while inside the UFO.
‘People who were previously disbelieved and ridiculed should be listened to and given a hearing’, says Nick Pope.

For some, thefact that the Pentagon has finally admitted it cannot explain the behaviour of the objects may have been a surprise but, for PC Alan Godfrey, 73, it merely proves what he already knows.
On a windswept and wet West Yorkshire evening in November 1980, Godfrey was in hot pursuit of a herd of escaped cows in Todmorden’s housing estate. Instead of cows, he stumbled across a giant levitating diamond that would change the course of his life. Godfrey’s close encounter with this UFO went viral worldwide and transformed Todmorden into Britain’s Roswell.
Godfrey, a no-nonsense Yorkshireman born and raised in Oldham, is long retired from the force but still recalls the events of that night when he came face to face with the peculiar object – a diamond-shaped aircraft hovering 5ft off the ground while spinning on its axis.
He just had time to sketch the UFO on his notepad before he was blinded. In his next moment of conscious awareness, he was sitting in his patrol car. The UFO was gone. “I got out of the car, looked at the road surface, and it was like a whirlpool,” he says. The UFO’s rapid revolutions had arranged the dead leaves, twigs and other debris into an autumn-themed spiral.
In the aftermath of his encounter, he had visits from the Ministry of Defence, correspondence from a Russian scientist and interest from the world’s press. He even underwent hypnosis to uncover memories of his abduction.
Godfrey was ridiculed for years – many who claim to have had encounters with UFOs are reluctant to go on the record for fear of the same treatment – but things are changing. High-ranking government officials such as Christopher Mellon, a former US secretary for defence in intelligence, and Luis Elizondo, former director of AATIP, insist that there are aircraft in our skies that don’t obey the known laws of physics. Even Barack Obama has gone on record on the subject, talking to CBS this year: “There’s footage and records of objects in the skies, that we don’t know exactly what they are, we can’t explain how they moved, their trajectory. They did not have an easily explainable pattern. And so, you know I think that people still take seriously trying to investigate and figure out what that is. But I have nothing to report to you today.”
When it comes to abduction stories, sceptics will say these encounters are either hoaxes or accounts of vivid dreams or hallucinations. Christopher French, emeritus professor of psychology at Goldsmiths, University of London, has spent years studying the paranormal and argues that sleep paralysis is a better explanation for many of these stories. “In some cases, you get associated symptoms, and they include a sense of presence; a very strong feeling that there’s something in the room with you,” French says. He adds that sufferers might hallucinate and “see strange lights moving around the room or strange figures or shadow people”.
That doesn’t fit for Godfrey’s story – he was driving and on duty at the time. “I think in Alan Godfrey’s case, he was sleep-deprived; he had been on duty for a long time. The most likely explanation is some kind of hallucinatory experience due to tiredness,” says French. What about the story he told under hypnosis? “The thing with hypnotic regression is that it is one of the best ways known of generating false memories. If you go for hypnotic regression expecting to recover memories of alien abduction, there’s a very good chance that’s what you’ll get.”
But Nick Pope, a former UFO investigator for the Ministry of Defence, is not convinced and thinks that Godfrey is genuine. “He had a lot to potentially lose by coming out with this and yet stuck to his guns.”
Doesn’t a hallucination explain what he saw? “I get that people do have hallucinations, but they tend to be the result of either mental illness or some sort of hallucinogenic substance, and this guy was on duty and was, by all accounts, rational. And so those explanations don’t seem to apply – I’m stumped when it comes to that particular case. Ask yourself: how many times have you been tired and come to the end of a long day? We’ve all been in that situation, and we don’t suddenly construct bizarre narratives about spacecraft and aliens.”
Is it time to start taking these stories more seriously? “I’m not saying that I believe it’s literally true that these are alien spaceships,” says Pope. “But at the very least, these people who were previously disbelieved and ridiculed should be listened to and given a hearing.
“For everyone who tells you these people are attention seekers after fame and fortune, I would say, ‘What fame? What fortune?’ Who outside the UFO community has heard of Alan Godfrey or Terry Lovelace?”
Does Pope think ETs are among us? “I don’t know. I am certain that they are out there, but whether they’re down here or not? I don’t know. I think it’s much more likely that we’re dealing with unmanned probes.”
If not hallucinations, equipment glitches or mistakes, many will say black ops, conducted by the US, China, Russia, or other militaries, are a more plausible explanation than aliens. “I accept that most military personnel won’t have sight of every single black project and, therefore, won’t necessarily know about every secret prototype, aircraft or drone that’s flying,” says Pope. “But the military and government, and the intelligence community have a pretty good idea of roughly where the ceiling is in terms of technology. So, when these expert military witnesses describe the sorts of speeds, accelerations, manoeuvres that are reported with these sorts of incidents, I sit up and take note.”
Whatever one thinks about the veracity of these stories, many of the people who tell them believe they are real, and some suffer from severe mental illness in the aftermath. Chris French says the levels of psychological arousal in people living with PTSD go “through the roof” when they’re asked to retell their stories. “If you do the same thing with the alien abductees, you get the same thing.”
Lovelace’s night in Devil’s Den changed his life and the life of his friend Toby. The US air force got wind of their ordeal and, per military protocol, separated and reassigned them. Lovelace ignored his orders and visited Toby to say goodbye. “Toby was falling apart,” Lovelace says. The two embraced. Toby said: “It happened, didn’t it?” “Yes, my brother, it really happened. You’re not losing your mind,” Lovelace replied.
Lovelace has suffered enormously since that night. “I’ve had 40 years’ of nightmares. I still have a phobia of crossing open ground. I still sleep with a light on and a gun beside my bed.” But he feels vindicated by acknowledgments made by the US government, military personnel and Obama. “I’ve got a long list of people that I’m going to email and say, ‘I told you so.’”
For Godfrey, it’s 40 years too late. He is adamant about what he saw that morning in Todmorden. “I’ve had all sorts: you fell into some sort of trance when you were driving – all that shit. No, it was real. It left debris on the road – my headlights were reflecting off it, as were the blue lights. This was a real incident. I didn’t need the Pentagon to tell me there are things out there. I know what I saw that night was real, nuts and bolts. If I’d got out and thrown a brick at it, it would have gone, ‘Clang!’ It doesn’t change what happened to me and how I was treated back then.”

En dat kan ertoe leiden dat de commando’s worden verhaspeld, met alle mogelijke gevolgen van dien. De Marsvoertuigen blijven overigens wel hun statusrapporten naar de aarde zenden.
Een deel van het Marsonderzoek gaat overigens gewoon door. NASA heeft de diverse Marsmissies voor enkele weken ’huiswerk’ gegeven, dat ze tijdens de communicatiepauze moeten afwerken. Zo zullen de Marsrovers Perseverance en Curiosity weerkundige metingen blijven doen en uitkijken naar stofhozen in hun omgeving. En de stationaire Marsrover InSight blijft ‘aardbevingen’ registreren.
Ook de diverse ruimtesondes die als satellieten om de rode planeet cirkelen zetten hun onderzoeksprogramma’s voort. De gegevens die zij verzamelen zullen echter pas na half oktober naar de aarde worden overgeseind.
Scientists have developed a tiny 3D-printed microneedle vaccine patch that could offer a pain-free alternative to needles.
In trials on mice, it offered a 10-fold greater immune response and a 50-fold greater T-cell and antigen-specific antibody response compared with a needle in the arm.
The polymer patch, which is smaller than a 5p coin, needs lower doses and could be mailed to people's homes and self-administered, eliminating the need for trained medical personnel.
It also offers an 'anxiety-free' vaccination option for people who have a 'needle phobia', also known as trypanophobia, which is putting some off getting their Covid jabs.
The researchers are yet to conduct clinical trials of the patch on humans, which could pave the way for a new way of administering vaccines in the future.

HOW DOES THE VACCINE PATCH WORK?
The polymer microneedle vaccine patches are printed using a CLIP prototype 3D printer.
The microneedles are coated with the vaccine fluid, such as the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines.
Upon entry to the dermis layer of the skin, the vaccine fluid dissolves.
A vaccine needle goes as deep as the muscle, past the skin layers.
The microneedles don't go as deep - only to the dermis layer of the skin - but this layer is rich in immune cells.
The new vaccine patch has been developed by researchers at Stanford University and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
'In developing this technology, we hope to set the foundation for even more rapid global development of vaccines, at lower doses, in a pain- and anxiety-free manner,' said lead study author Joseph M. DeSimone, a professor of chemical engineering at Stanford University.
The microneedle patches were 3D printed using a CLIP prototype 3D printer that DeSimone invented and is produced by CARBON, a Silicon Valley company co-founded by Professor DeSimone.
3D-printing uses software to create a three dimensional design before being printed by robotic equipment.
Automated robotic arms have a nozzle at the end that emit the printing substance – in this case polymer – layer by layer.
Thanks to the flexibility of 3D printing, the microneedles can be easily customised to develop various vaccine patches for flu, measles, hepatitis or Covid-19 vaccines.
While vaccines are typically administered as injections under the skin, there is increasing interest in what's known as intradermal injections - more shallow injections that only reach the dermis of the skin, which is located between the epidermis and the hypodermis.
Beyond the hypodermis is the fat and muscle that a traditional vaccine needle usually penetrates.
Intradermal injections are suitable for vaccinations as human skin is rich in immune cells (Langerhans cells and dermal dendritic cells), the researchers point out.
In trials conducted with animals, the patch gave an immune response that was 10 times greater than a vaccine delivered into an arm muscle with a needle jab
NEEDLE PHOBIA COULD BE THE CAUSE OF 10% OF UK COVID VACCINE HESITANCY
Needle phobia could be the cause of 10 per cent of Covid vaccine hesitancy in the UK, recent research suggests.
University of Oxford researchers asked 15,014 UK adults to rate their anxieties about needles and blood, and their willingness to receive a Covid vaccine.
In total, 3,927 (26.2 per cent) screened positive for blood-injection-injury phobia.
Individuals screening positive (22.0 per cent) were more likely to report Covid vaccine hesitancy than those screening negative (11.5 per cent).
Blood-injection-injury fears may explain approximately 10 per cent of cases of Covid vaccine hesitancy, the researchers said.
'If we could wave a magic wand and rid people of their injection anxiety, just over 10 per cent of instances of vaccine hesitancy might disappear,' said study author Daniel Freeman for the Conversation.
Other reasons for not getting jabbed include safety of the vaccines and scepticism about Covid's seriousness.
The current coronavirus pandemic has been a stark reminder of the difference made with timely vaccination, according to the researchers – but getting a vaccine typically requires a visit to a clinic, hospital or vaccine centre.
There, a healthcare provider obtains a vaccine from a refrigerator, fills a syringe with the liquid vaccine formulation and injects it into the arm.
Although this process seems simple, there are issues that can hinder mass vaccination – from cold storage of vaccines to needing trained professionals who can give the shots.
The vaccine patch, on the other hand, could be shipped anywhere in the world without special handling, letting people apply the patch themselves, a bit like at-home Covid testing.
The patch's microneedles would be coated in the vaccine fluid, which would be painlessly applied to the skin.
The microneedles could be fabricated using 3D-printing from a range of materials – solid metal and silicon, for example, as well as polymers.
It's generally a challenge to adapt microneedles to different vaccine types, said lead study author Shaomin Tian, a researcher in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology in the UNC School of Medicine.
'These issues, coupled with manufacturing challenges, have arguably held back the field of microneedles for vaccine delivery,' she said.
Most microneedle vaccines are fabricated with master templates to make molds.
However, the molding of microneedles is not very versatile, and drawbacks include reduced needle sharpness during replication.

The ease of using the vaccine patch may lead to higher vaccination rates and avoid vaccine hesitancy during future pandemics.
The team of microbiologists and chemical engineers are continuing to innovate by formulating RNA vaccines, like the Pfizer and Moderna Covid-19 vaccines, into microneedle patches for future testing.
3D PRINTING TECHNOLOGY MAKES OBJECTS BY DEPOSITING MATERIALS ONE LAYER AT A TIME
First invented in the 1980s by Chuck Hull, an engineer and physicist, 3D printing technology – also called additive manufacturing – is the process of making an object by depositing material, one layer at a time.
Similarly to how an inkjet printer adds individual dots of ink to form an image, a 3D printer adds material where it is needed, based on a digital file.
Many conventional manufacturing processes involved cutting away excess materials to make a part, and this can lead to wastage of up to 30 pounds (13.6 kilograms) for every one pound of useful material, according to the Energy Department’s Oak Ridge National Laboratory in Tennessee.
By contrast, with some 3D printing processes about 98 per cent of the raw material is used in the finished part, and the method can be used to make small components using plastics and metal powders, with some experimenting with chocolate and other food, as well as biomaterials similar to human cells.
3D printers have been used to manufacture everything from prosthetic limbs to robots, and the process follows these basic steps:
* Creating a 3D blueprint using computer-aided design (CAD) software
* Preparing the printer, including refilling the raw materials such as plastics, metal powders and binding solutions.
* Initiating the printing process via the machine, which builds the object.
* 3D printing processes can vary, but material extrusion is the most common, and it works like a glue gun: the printing material is heated until it liquefies and is extruded through the print nozzle
* Using information from the digital file, the design is split into two-dimensional cross-sections so the printers knows where to put the material
* The nozzle deposits the polymer in thin layers, often 0.1 millimetre (0.004 inches) thick.
* The polymer rapidly solidifies, bonding to the layer below before the build platform lowers and the print head adds another layer (depending on the object, the entire process can take anywhere from minutes to days.)
* After the printing is finished, every object requires some post-processing, ranging from unsticking the object from the build platform to removing support, to removing excess powders.

The timely development of Covid-19 vaccines brought hope to the fight against the global pandemic. But getting a vaccine requires a visit to a clinic or hospital. The vaccine needs cold storage and a health care provider to inject it into the arm. This is slowing down the mass vaccination rate.
Scientists from Stanford University and the University of North Carolina Chapel Hill have developed a new way to deliver vaccines quickly and painlessly.
Greater protection than a traditional immunization shot
The 3D printed vaccine patch is more effective than a traditional immunization shot. The vaccine patch has been tested on the animal skin. The resulting immune response was found to be 10 times greater than a needle jab delivered into an arm muscle.
The patch can be self-administered easily
This patch has 3D-printed microneedles lined up on a polymer strip, these needles are just long enough to reach the skin to deliver the vaccine. The idea is to apply the vaccine patch directly to the skin which is full of immune cells.
Apart from COVID-19 vaccines, these microneedles can be easily customized to develop vaccine patches for other diseases like flu, measles, or hepatitis.
Rolls-Royce has proudly announced that its all-electric airplane, named the ‘Spirit of Innovation’, has completed its maiden voyage with success, proving its worthiness. The plane flew for approximately 15 minutes, taking off from and landing at the Boscombe Down site in the UK. This first flight is an amazing achievement that has been planned for over a year now and which follows six months of taxying trials.
The ‘Spirit of Innovation’ features the most power-dense battery pack ever built for an aircraft, so this is a record holder of many figures. Here are the most important ones:
It can reach speeds of 300 MPH (483 KPH), which is a record for an electric plane.
It features 6,000 cells that constitute its battery pack, delivering 750 Volts.
The three-motor powertrain delivers 750 kW (1006 hp) of power.
This is an extremely powerful machine, but don’t think that its battery juice is depleted in just 15 minutes, as this was only a tentative demonstration. Rolls-Royce says the range should reach about 200 miles (322 km), but obviously, one would have to travel at lower, cruising speeds to achieve that. On a single charge, and by not being pushed too hard, it should be able to fly from London to Paris.

The marvel of engineering that is the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ extends to all its systems and subcomponents. For example, the energy efficiency of the electric powertrain is 90%, reaching unprecedented levels. The battery cells contain a cooling system that regulates its performance automatically, ensuring that the pack remains safe and stable.
Rolls-Royce believes in this projectsso much that they are planning to actually deliver a “toned-down” all-electric passenger aircraft based on the ‘Spirit of Innovation’ to Widerøe, the largest regional airline in Scandinavia, as soon as by 2026.

Astronomers have discovered an enormous cavity in theMilky Way galaxy that is believed to have formed after a stellar explosion millions of years ago.
The bubble-shaped void is 500 light-years wide and is located between star-forming regions in the Perseus and Taurus constellations, a new study reports.
The star-forming clusters of gas and dust, known as molecular clouds, are believed to have formed in tandem from the samesupernova, or explosion of a star that has reached the end of its life, about 10 million years ago. The new finding may shed light on how supernovas generate star formation, study team members said.
"Hundreds of stars are forming or exist already at the surface of this giant bubble," study lead author Shmuel Bialy, a postdoctoral researcher at the Institute for Theory and Computation (ITC) at the Harvard-Smithsonian Center For Astrophysics (CfA), said in a statement.
"We have two theories — either one supernova went off at the core of this bubble and pushed gas outward, forming what we now call the 'Perseus-Taurus Supershell,' or a series of supernovae occurring over millions of years created it over time," Bialy said.
Using data from the European Space Agency’s star-mapping Gaia spacecraft, the researchers were able to map the Perseus and Taurus molecular clouds in 3D for the first time, revealing the massive void that remained elusive in previous 2D maps of the region.
"We've been able to see these clouds for decades, but we never knew their true shape, depth or thickness. We also were unsure how far away the clouds were," co-author Catherine Zucker, a postdoctoral researcher at the CfA, said in the statement. "Now we know where they lie with only 1% uncertainty, allowing us to discern this void between them."
The team created the 3D molecular cloud maps using a data visualization software called Glue, which was founded by Alyssa Goodman, who is a CfA astronomer and co-author of the study. The team mapped the star-forming regions to better understand how gas and dust released during a stellar explosion rearranges itself in molecular clouds to form new stars. Their findings suggest that the Perseus and Taurus molecular clouds formed as a result of the same supernova shockwave, demonstrating the powerful effects of such stellar explosions.
"This demonstrates that when a star dies, its supernova generates a chain of events that may ultimately lead to the birth of new stars," Bialy said.
The new study was published Sept. 22 in the Astrophysical Journal Letters.

The universe is a big place, and it's full of big things. Planets, stars, galaxies and clusters of galaxies extend upward on ever-more-massive scales. Here we marvel at some of the record holders in different cosmic categories, perhaps feeling humbled by the universe's ability to produce entities of incredible size and grandeur.
1. Largest exoplanet: GQ Lupi b

Astronomers weren't sure what to make of the mysterious GQ Lupi b when it was first discovered in 2005. Orbiting a young star around two and a half times farther than Pluto is from the sun, the companion object seemed to be either a planet or a brown dwarf, which is actually a type of small star. Subsequent observations have yet to clear up the confusion, but the best estimates suggest GQ Lupi b has a radius around 3.5 times that of Jupiter, meaning that if it is an exoplanet, it's the largest ever found.
UY Scuti is a hypergiant star with a radius that's around 1,700 times larger than the sun, making it the biggest known star in the universe. If someone were to place UY Scuti at the center of the solar system, its edge would extend just beyond the orbit of Jupiter. Gas and dust streaming from the star would extend even farther out, beyond the orbit of Pluto, or around 400 times the Earth-sun distance.
3. Largest Nebula: The Tarantula Nebula

Both the largest known nebula and most active star-forming region in our local galactic neighborhood, the Tarantula Nebula stretches for more than 1,800 light-years at its longest span. Also known as 30 Doradus, the object is located 170,000 light-years from Earth in the Large Magellanic Cloud, a small satellite galaxy that orbits our Milky Way. Rather than a killer arachnid, this Tarantula is a stellar nursery — within its beautiful folds of gas and dust young stars are being born.
4. Largest empty spot: Supervoid in Eridanus

In 2004, astronomers noticed a gigantic region of empty space in maps created by NASA's Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe (WMAP) satellite, which scanned in exquisite detail the cosmic microwave background, or the leftover radiation from the Big Bang. The spot, which spans 1.8 billion light-years across, according to Vice, is strangely devoid of stars, gas, dust and even dark matter. While they have seen previous voids, researchers remain baffled as to how exactly one of this size and scale formed.
5. Largest galaxy: IC 1101

Our Milky Way galaxy is around 100,000 light-years across, but that's fairly average for a spiral galaxy. In comparison, the largest known galaxy, called IC 1101, is 50 times larger and about 2,000 times more massive than our galactic home. Stretching for an impressive 5.5 million light-years, IC 1101 is so big that, if placed where the Milky Way is now, its edge would reach past our nearest galactic neighbor, Andromeda.
6. Largest black hole: TON 618

Supermassive black holes are thought to lurk in the center of every galaxy and can clock in at many millions of times the mass of the sun. But the biggest known black hole can be found powering a distant quasar — gigantic objects in the early universe spewing out insane amounts of radiation. This one, known as TON 618, has an estimated mass of 66 billion suns, according to a statement.
7. Largest galactic farts: Fermi Bubbles

In 2010, astronomers using the Fermi space telescope discovered colossal structures emerging from the Milky Way. These massive blobs, which can only be seen in certain wavelengths of light, are a towering 25,000 light-years tall (a quarter of the Milky Way's width). Researchers believe the bubbles are the result of an ancient feeding frenzy that our galaxy's central black hole experienced, resulting in enormous belches of energy.
8. Largest single object: Protocluster SPT2349-56

Back when the universe was only a tenth of its current age, 14 galaxies began crashing together and forming the most massive known gravitationally bound cosmic object, protocluster SPT2349-56. Squeezed together in a space that's only about three times as big as our Milky Way galaxy, this megamerger will eventually combine into a single galaxy weighing 10 trillion times the mass of the sun. Additional observations have revealed that around 50 additional galaxies surround the structure, which will settle into a gigantic object known as a galactic cluster, in which many galaxies orbit one another.
9. Largest galactic collection: Shapley Supercluster
Astronomer Harlow Shapley discovered a colossal collection of galaxies in the 1930s that now bears his name. Containing more than 8,000 galaxies and with a mass of more than 10 million billion times that of the sun, the Shapley Supercluster is the largest structure in the local universe, according to the European Space Agency.
10. Largest supercluster: Laniakea Supercluster

Our Milky Way is just a tiny member of a gargantuan collection of collections of galaxies known as the Laniakea Supercluster. Though it has no formal boundaries, astronomers estimate that it contains around 100,000 galaxies with a total mass about 100 million billion times that of the sun, and stretches for more than 520 million light-years across.
11. Largest quasar collection: Huge-LQG

The distant black-hole-powered superbright objects known as quasars are already mighty large. But sometimes, quasars can come together into clusters, with the largest one imaginatively named the Huge-LQG (for Huge Large Quasar Group). Containing 73 quasars and an estimated mass of 6.1 quintillion (that's a 1 followed by 18 zeros) suns, the colossal cosmic collection is thought to be 4 billion light-years across at its biggest span, according to The Atlantic.
12. Largest thing in the universe: Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall

By mapping the locations of gamma-ray bursts — fleeting but powerful explosions that occur when a massive star dies — astronomers uncovered what is often considered to be the largest known entity in the cosmos: the Hercules-Corona Borealis Great Wall. The object is 10 billion light-years across and could contain billions of galaxies. The Great Wall was first discovered in 2013 when surveys showed gamma-rays particularly concentrated about 10 billion light-years away in the direction of the Hercules and Corona Borealis constellations.

The Kardashov Scale is a method to measure the degree of technological evolution of a civilization, proposed in 1964 by the Russian astrophysicist Nikolai Kardashov.
Now, two specialists from the Netherlands, Hongin Chen and Michael Garrett, used a special modern radio interferometer LOFAR during their space exploration.
Because of this, they managed to find two galaxies in which civilizations of the third type on the Kardashov scale may be present.
We have reached a key point in human civilization. According to renowned theoretical physicist Michio Kaku, the next 100 years in science will determine whether we survive as a species, or become extinct.
In other words, we can reach the stars, or we will remain a Type 0 civilization.
Experts say that as a civilization grows and becomes more advanced, its energy needs grow as well. This is because the population grows and with it the machinery necessary to keep it standing.
With this as a principle, the Kardashov Scale was developed as a way to measure the technological progress of a civilization, based on the amount of energy it has at its disposal.
The third type means that this civilization is the most developed and can use the energy of the entire galaxy for its own purposes.
It is worth noting that today humanity has not yet been able to obtain the status of even the first kind. Such a civilization uses all the energy that is available on the planet of residence.
The reason for this is that people do not know how to use all the solar energy that reaches the Earth. It may take humanity about 200 years to become a Type 1 civilization.
Scientists believe that they will be able to find a superintelligent civilization because in the future they will investigate radiation in the mid-infrared range.
They can indicate the presence of Dyson spheres in outer space. A total of 21 galaxies have been studied. Four objects attracted attention, two of which were of natural origin.

NASA released its first digital, interactive graphic novel on Saturday in celebration of National Comic Book Day. “First Woman: NASA’s Promise for Humanity” imagines the story of Callie Rodriguez, the first woman to explore the Moon.
Issue 1, “Dream to Reality,” imagines Callie's trailblazing path as the first woman on the Moon. Callie and her robot sidekick, RT, overcome setbacks, disappointment, and tragedy along the way.

While Callie’s story is fictional, the first woman and the first person of color will walk on the Moon, achieving these historic milestones as part of NASA’s Artemis missions. Through this graphic novel, NASA aims to inspire the next generation of explorers – the Artemis Generation.

Amid a growing number of reports from Navy pilots and other military personnel of witnessing highly advanced craft of unexplained origin, a recent intelligence report on the Defense Department’s Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force (UAPTF) confirmed more than 140 reports of so-called “UFOs”.
The US Defence Department is being urged to oversee "the timely and consistent reporting" of what the military refers to as "unidentified aerial phenomena."
Rep. Ruben Gallego, D-Ariz., who chairs the Armed Services Subcommittee on Intelligence and Special Operations, has pushed through a provision in the House of Representatives’ fiscal 2022 National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA) proposal, passed Thursday, to form a permanent office under the Defense Secretary for the purpose within 180 days.
Officials would be tasked with “carrying out, on a department-wide basis, the mission currently performed by the Unidentified Aerial Phenomenon Task Force” to probe government and military reports of unexplained sightings in the skies. The temporary UAP Task Force had been set up in 2020, after a plethora of reports of unexplained craft spotted in the skies were augmented by Pentagon-released three videos from the Navy.
The footage, made public in April after its authenticity had been confirmed, depicted airborne objects operating in the vicinity of military bases and restricted airspace in inexplicably aerodynamic ways.
“The aerial phenomena observed in the videos remain characterized as ‘unidentified,’” the agency revealed at the time.
According to the new legislation put forth by the Marine Corps combat veteran, the Pentagon office would also be required to share its findings on what is commonly called “Unidentified Flying Objects”, or UFOs, annually with Congress. Data would be gleaned from a variety of intelligence-gathering tools, ranging from satellites and electronic devices to human spies, stipulates the legislation.
"I decided to actually put action to words. We had a briefing on this phenomenon. One of the things that came out of that briefing, without breaking too many walls here, was that there just needed to be better data collection. There needs to be standardised data collection across the services," said Gallego.
"There's been a total lack of focus across the national security apparatus to actually get at what's happening here… I think there has been kind of a partial pastime of curiosity seekers that are within the Department of Defense but there has not been any professional initiative across the defense enterprise," the Arizona Democrat was cited by Politico as saying. The new office will be seeking to “synchronise and standardise the collection, reporting, and analysis of incidents regarding unidentified aerial phenomena across the Department of Defense," according to the provision.
The legislation, which now goes to the Senate, entrusts the military with determining whether the UAPs may possibly be linked to "non-state actors", or, in other words, potentially threatening foreign adversaries.
UAP Phenomena
The new legislation comes against the backdrop of numerous reports in recent years by Navy pilots and other military personnel who claimed to have observed highly advanced craft of puzzling origin that “appear to demonstrate advanced technology". The objects spotted were described as manoeuvring in ways seemingly defying current aerodynamics.
The reports triggered a succession of classified briefings to members of Congress. However, a public report in last year's intelligence bill concluded in a "preliminary assessment" in June that neither military nor intelligence agencies possessed enough information to make any conclusions regarding the over 100 reported UAP sightings.
In August, Secretary of the Air Force Frank Kendall dismissed the UAP phenomena as a not worthy of being regarded as a “threat”.
“I don’t consider it an imminent threat to the United States or the human race, these phenomena occurring… I would have to see evidence that it was something worthy of the attention of the United States Air Force as a threat," he was cited as saying by Politico.
According to Ruben Gallego, an effort ought to be made to “break down the stigma of reporting” so-called UFO phenomena.
“There are a lot of people who are afraid of reporting this because they're afraid ... it's going to cost their careers. People think they're crazy… We're not going to be able to get to the bottom of this unless we …get enough information to figure out exactly what's going on [and] the pilots and other people who have seen it actually feel comfortable talking about it," said the congressman.

A geoglyph of a bull discovered in Siberia dates back more than 4,000 years, making it twice as old as the famed Nazca lines of Peru and a millennia older than Uffington's chalk-lined White Horse.
Geoglyphs, which often have spiritual or religious meaning, are large designs made in the ground that can typically only be seen from the air.
The bull, which measures 10 feet tall by 13 feet long, is formed from carefully arranged pebbles and sandstone.
It was part of a larger Early Bronze Age burial site uncovered near Khondergey, a village in southwest Tuva close to Russia’s border with Mongolia.
This is the first animal geoglyph found in this part of Central Asia, according to archaeologists at the Russian Academy of Sciences’ Institute of the History of Material Culture, who participated in the discovery.

‘The bull motif is very typical for the Central Asia cultures of the Early Bronze Era,’ Marina Kilunovskaya, head of Tuva Archaeological Expedition, told The Siberian Times. ‘Later in the Scythian era, bulls were replaced by deers.’
Kilunovskaya said petroglyphs, or rock carvings, of bulls have been discovered in Tuva and the surrounding regions before but this is the first animal geoglyph.
‘We didn’t previously find such stone compositions.’ she told the Times.
Only the back half of the bovine remains—its front was destroyed by road construction in the 1940s. Members of the expedition hope the bull’s rear will be better preserved.

WHAT ARE GEOGLYPHS?
Geoglyphs are works of art created by moving objects in the landscape, such as stones, trees and gravel.
A positive geoglyph is formed by materials being laid on the ground while a negative geoglyph is formed by removing material.
Though some geoglyphs clearly represent animals and other natural imagery, many have strange square, circular or hexagonal shapes.
The most famous geoglyphs are the Nazca lines in Peru, rediscovered in 1939. The cultural significance of these features remains unclear.
Geoglyphs have been discovered in diverse corners of the world: In addition to the Nazca Lines in Peru and Uffington’s White Horse in England, the Blythe Intaglios are a group of gigantic figures carved into the ground in the Colorado Desert near Blythe, California, that have been radiocarbon-dated to between 900 and 1200 BC.
The Cerne Abbas Giant in Dorset, England, is a 180-foot tall nude male figure with a prominent erection and large club.
The phallic figure's outline was made by digging two-feet deep trenches into the ground and filling it with crushed chalk.
Dates for when it was carved have ranged from the Middle Ages to the 17th century, but using optically stimulated luminescence, scientists have placed it much further back, somewhere between 700 1110 AD.
The oldest known geoglyph is also in Russia, though some 1,100 miles away from the Tuva bull: An enormous moose only clearly visible from the sky in Chelyabinsk dates to about 6,000 years ago.
The moose, sometimes labeled an elk, was incised on the Zyuratkul Mountains. It stretches for about 902 feet and depicts an animal with four legs, antlers, and a long muzzle.
Only discovered in 2011 using satellite imaging, the moose is also the largest-known figurative geoglyph, as opposed to an abstract or geometric design.
Stone tools uncovered by archaeologists at the site show indicate were made to fit the hands of children, who partook in the glyph’s creation.

'But it was not a kind of slave labor of children,’ Stanislav Grigoryev, a senior researcher from the Chelyabinsk History and Archaeology Institute, told The Siberian Times. ‘They were involved to share common values, to join something important to all the people.'
In 2014, dozens of 50 geoglyphs of various shapes and sizes, including a massive swastika, were discovered across northern Kazakhstan.
WHAT ARE PERU'S MYSTERIOUS 'NAZCA LINES'?
Geoglyphs span large land tracts located between the towns of Palpa and Nazca. Some geoglyphs depict animals, objects or compact shapes; others are only simplistic lines.
The Nazca people lived in the area from 200 to 700 CE. Some of the designs are believed to be created instead by the Topará and Paracas people.
Most of the lines are formed by a shallow trench with a depth of between four inches (10cm) and six inches (15cm), made by removing the reddish-brown iron oxide-coated pebbles that cover the surface of the Nazca desert and exposing the light-colored earth beneath.
This sublayer contains high amounts of lime which has hardened to form a protective layer that shields the lines from winds and prevents erosion.

Paul Kosok, from Long Island University, is credited as the first scholar to seriously study the Nazca Lines.
He discovered that the lines converged at the winter solstice in the Southern Hemisphere.
Along with Maria Reiche, a German mathematician and archaeologist, Kosok proposed the figures were markers on the horizon to show where the sun and other celestial bodies rose.
A newly discovered geoglyph in Siberia predates those found at the famous Nazca Lines in Peru. The pebble and sandstone bull, which measures 3 by 4 meters (9.8 by 13.1 feet), is the first ever animal geoglyph that has been found in that specific part of the planet.
This newfound geoglyph was discovered near the village of Khondergey in the southwestern part of the Republic of Tuva. And it is ancient as it was associated with burials from over 4,000 years ago during the Early Bronze Era. This means that it is a thousand years older than the Uffington White Horse in England, and twice as old as Peru’s Nazca Lines.

The Nazca Lines are a group of geoglyphs that are found over an area of almost 190 square miles (492 square kilometers) and the majority of them date back about 2,000 years. The Uffington White Horse was carved into the white chalk hillside of England’s Berkshire Downs approximately 3,000 years ago. And earlier this year, a gigantic spiral geoglyph found in India’s Thar Desert is believed to be the largest on the entire planet.
As for the geoglyph found in Siberia, unfortunately the front part of the bull was destroyed when a road was constructed at the site back in the 1940s. The only remaining parts of the geoglyph are the bull’s backside, hind legs, and tail.
Marina Kilunovskaya, who is the head of the Tuva Archaeological Expedition, described the discovery in further details, “We do see bulls as petroglyphs around Tuva and the neighboring territories – but coming across the animal geoglyph is a unique discovery for the whole region of Central Asia. We didn’t previously find such stone compositions.” Geoglyphs are big motifs (normally larger than 4 meters or 13.1 feet) in the ground that were made by stones, pebbles, gravel, or by removing the soil to create lines. Petroglyphs are designs that were made by carvings or chippings in rock surfaces.

Interestingly, during the Early Bronze Era, cultures from Central Asia used bull motifs quite often, while deer were used years later during the Scythian times.
Kilunovskaya went on to say, “Although we can recognize the bull depiction, allowing us to reconstruct the lost parts with a high degree of probability, we have never seen stone layouts such as these before. In our opinion, the uniqueness of the find and the threat to the site due to the adjacent road requires further preservation.”

William Shatner, de acteur die Captain Kirk speelde in ‘Star Trek’, zal op 12 oktober meevliegen op de volgende ruimtemissie van Blue Origin. Dat heeft het ruimtevaartbedrijf van Amazon-baas en rijkste mens ter wereld Jeff Bezos maandag formeel bevestigd.
"Ik hoor al heel lang over de ruimte, en ik grijp de kans om het met mijn eigen ogen te zien," zegt William Shatner zelf over de stunt in een verklaring van Blue Origin. "Wat een wonder", voegde de Canadese acteur eraan toe, die met zijn 90 jaar de oudste persoon zal worden die de ruimte ingaat.

Zijn echte lancering staat gepland voor 12 oktober, om 15.30 uur Belgische tijd moet de raket opstijgen in het westen van Texas. Het vaartuig New Shepard schiet dan naar ruim 100 kilometer hoogte naar de rand van de dampkring, waar de inzittenden een paar minuten gewichtloosheid ervaren. Het tuig moet ongeveer een kwartier later weer veilig landen, hangend aan een parachute.
De vlucht vindt plaats minder dan drie maanden na de missie waarbij het bedrijf zijn eerste vier ruimtetoeristen vervoerde, onder wie oprichter Jeff Bezos zelf, zijn broer en de 18-jarige Nederlander Oliver Daemen, sindsdien de jongste mens in de ruimte ooit. New research sheds light on the Fermi Paradox.
SEVENTY YEARS AGO, ITALIAN-AMERICAN nuclear physicist Enrico Fermi asked his colleagues a question during alunchtime conversation. If life is common in our Universe, why can’t we see any evidence of its activity out there (aka. “where is everybody?”)
Seventy years later, this question has launched just as many proposed resolutions as to how extraterrestrial intelligence (ETIs) could be common, yet go unnoticed by our instruments.
Some possibilities that have been considered are that humanity might be alone in the Universe, early to the party, or is not in a position to notice any yet. But in a recent study, Robin Hanson (creator of the Great Filter) and an interdisciplinary team offer a new model for determining when the aliens will get here. According to their study, humanity is early to the Universe and will meet others in 200 million to two billion years from now.
To break it down succinctly, the “grabby aliens model” assumes that civilizations are born according to a series of steps similar to what we see with the biological evolution of life here on Earth. These civilizations, which Hanson and his colleagues refer to as “grabby civilizations” (GCs), will then expand at a common rate, alter the volume of space they occupy, and prevent technologically advanced civilizations (similar to where humanity is today) from arising in these volumes. The model has three parameters, consisting of:
Expansion speed (s) from the fact that we don’t see loud alien volumes in our sky,
Power (n) from the history of significant events in the evolution of life on Earth,
Constant (k) by assuming our date is a random sample from their appearance dates.
The model assumes that the expansion speed of alien civilizations can be estimated based on the fact that we (13.8 billion years after the Big Bang) do not detect the presence of them at this time, the amount of time it takes for advanced life to evolve (based on) and the assumption that humanity’s location in space and time is not unusual, relative to the appearance of advanced and expanding civilizations (similar to the Copernican Principle).
From this, Hanson and his team Moreover, Hanson and his colleagues were able to produce estimates on where the GCs are in our Universe, how much of the Universe they have occupied so far, and how long it will be before we encounter them.
PARAMETER 1: “WHERE IS EVERYBODY?”
The first parameter (s) harkens back to the Fermi Paradox, as initially framed by Michael Hart and Frank Tipler), which refers to the apparent disparity between the statistical likelihood of intelligent life in our Universe and the absence of evidence for it. Within this theoretical framework, scientists are forced to find explanations for how intelligent life could be ubiquitous but has remained invisible to human instruments until now.
As noted, this has spawned various proposed resolutions over the past few decades. Some key considerations include the timeline of the Universe and the evolution of life on Earth. Current estimates indicate that the Universe is 13.8 billion years old (± 40 million years), while the Solar System and planet Earth formed roughly 4.5 billion years ago. Based on the most recent fossilized evidence, the earliest lifeforms are believed to have emerged between 4.2 and 3.8 billion years ago.
Meanwhile, humanity has only existed for the last 200,000 years of Earth’s history and has only enjoyed a level of technological development that allows for SETI surveys for about 70 years. Given the disparity between these numbers, many scientists argue that it is simple anthropocentrism to assume that humanity could be the most advanced intelligence (or worse, alone) in the Universe.
On the other hand, some argue that if intelligent species had emerged millions or billions of years before humans even existed, would they not have gone on to occupy the visible Universe to a significant extent? Does the fact that we don’t see any GCs when we look up into the night sky not support the notion that no one is out there, or at least not in a position to communicate with us yet?
Others still have argued that a 4.5 billion evolutionary timeline means that only longer-lived stars and planets could support life, such as M-type (red dwarfs). These stars are known to have incredibly long lifespans, remaining in their main sequence phase for up to trillions of years. At the same time, recent exosolar planet surveys have suggested that they are the most likely place to find rocky planets orbiting within their habitable zones (HZs). As Hanson explained to Universe Today via email:
“Ninety-five percent of planets are around longer-lived stars than ours, and most live longer than a trillion years. Furthermore, advanced life like us should appear toward the end of a planet’s life, as life needs to first evolve through many stages. So we are quite early compared to when we’d expect advanced life to appear.”
So while our planet has only existed during the past 30 percent of the Universe, our evolutionary timeline corresponds to one percent of the lifespans of long-lived planets. Essentially, this means that 99 percent of advanced lifeforms in our Universe will appear after today. Add to that the fact that we do not see evidence of alien civilizations occupying the majority of the cosmos (something that becomes more likely with time), and one is left with the foregone conclusion that humanity is an “early arrival.”
PARAMETER 2: STEPPING HARD!
The second parameter (n) is based on the notion that biological evolution can be modeled based on a number of steps. This concept was introduced by Australian physicist and Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) Brandon Carter, renowned for having coined the Anthropic Principle. In response to what he saw as the overextension of the Copernican Principle in cosmology, this principle states that the very existence of intelligent life indicates that the Universe itself is conducive to its creation.
In a 1983 study titled “The Anthropic Principle and its Implications for Biological Evolution,” Carter presented a statistical model of how civilizations like ours might arise from simple dead matter via a series of intermediate steps. Since then, many scholars have built on his model, which includes Hanson himself. In 1996, Hanson published an essay titled “The Great Filter — Are We Almost Past It?” wherein he proposed that the Fermi Paradox could be the result of one or more of these steps being improbable.
Using life on Earth as a template, Hanson argued that there were eight possible steps between the earliest known life forms and where humanity is today, with a ninth step representing our possible future. These consist of:
Habitable star system (organics and habitable planets)
Reproductive molecules (e.g., RNA)
Prokaryotic single-cell life
Eukaryotic single-cell life
Sexual reproduction
Multi-cell life
Animals capable of using tools
Industrial civilization
Wide-scale colonization
With every step, the probability for failure increases, a situation that Hanson summarized using a lockpicking analogy. Imagine you have a series of locks that you need to pick before a deadline, and they have different levels of difficulty. The odds of picking all the locks before the deadline is up is a power law, where a change in one quantity gives rise to a proportional rise in another quantity.
For the sake of this study, Hanson and his colleagues reconsidered these steps, taking into account that some may take longer to achieve than others (what they group as “easy” or “hard” steps). The combination of these steps is what they referred to as the “hard steps power law,” where each step has an impact on whether or not a species could advance sufficiently before another GC occupied their space and suppressed them. As Hanson explained it:
“The timing of events in the history of life on Earth suggests that there were three to nine hard steps that life had to go through to reach our level and that most planets like ours never achieve our level before the window for life on that planet closes. Thus, advanced life like ours is rare. We can also see that it is rare because we don’t see any life out there at the more advanced level of making big visible impacts on the universe.
“Thus, we know there is a ‘great filter’ standing between simple dead matter and expanding lasting life. Our new analysis allows us to estimate the numerical magnitude of this filter. Advanced life at the grabby aliens level appears roughly once per million galaxies before the grabby aliens deadline.”
In other words, there is a deadline for advanced life in the Universe, where it must emerge and reach complexity before a more ancient and advanced species overtakes it. Far from placing humanity alone in the Universe, the prospect of humanity being an early arrival suggests that are plenty of GCs out there, as well as ones that have not yet reached an advanced stage of development.
“If alien civilizations randomly appear that then expand out to remake the universe, then once all of the Universe is filled with such aliens, there aren’t any places left for life to evolve toward our level,” Hanson added. “That is, ‘grabby aliens’ create a deadline by which advanced life must appear. This deadline is within a few billion years from now. Relative to that deadline, we are not early.”
PARAMETER 3: GOING LOUD!
The final parameter (k) is based on the assumption that the time and space we occupy are representative of the norm (as noted already, the Copernican Hypothesis). According to the GC model, this is the result of a selection effect whereby advanced alien life will eventually expand to fill up the Universe. This raises the final aspect that Hanson and his team considered, which is how less-developed civilizations make the transition to become GCs — aka. go from being “quiet” to being “loud.”
Loud civilizations are so-called because they increase their volume (of space), change their volumes’ appearances (show signs of activity produce technosignatures). Quiet civilizations are those that do not increase their volumes or alter them, which effectively describes our current level of development. Given time, quiet civilizations (if they survive) will advance to the point that they too will become loud, provided they do so before the deadline passes.
With these parameters defined, Hanson and his colleagues simulated how variations in the expansion speed of GCs (s) and the time it takes for life to evolve (n) would yield different results on how many GCs were currently active in our Universe, how much of it they had come to occupy, and (as a result) when we might encounter a GC. These variables were visualized in terms of 1D and 2D diagrams (shown above) and a 3D animation (shown below).
The s parameter is especially significant since faster-expanding aliens would be more difficult to detect before they reached our doorstep. Due to the speed of light, any activity in an occupied volume of space would take thousands of years to reach us. If a GC is expanding rapidly enough, the light they generated when they first began expanding will not arrive before they do. As Hanson put it:
“At the origin date of a random civilization, about half of the universe is filled with very big visible alien civilizations. If these grew very slowly, then the sky would be full of them, huge circles in the sky, far bigger than the full moon. However, if they grew at the speed of light, then we wouldn’t see them until they got here.
“If they grew very fast, such as at over half of the speed of light, then most of the places that could see them would be places where they had arrived and colonized and changed. That is, if we could see them, then they would likely be here instead of us. In which case, we would not exist.”
ALIENS: WHEN DO WE MEET THEM?
Ultimately, the results Hans and his team obtained indicated the following range of possibilities:
GCs (or “loud” civilizations) emerge from quiet ones at a rate of about once per million galaxies
They expand and increase their volume at about half the speed of light
They currently control 40-50 percent of the Universe’s volume
Each GC will eventually control 105 – 3 x 107 (100,000 to 30 million) galaxies
Last but certainly not least, they estimated that humanity is likely to encounter the nearest GC roughly 200 million to two billion years from now. In the meantime, their modeling also indicates that the odds of humanity detecting signs of technological activity (aka. “technosignatures”) are very low. As Hanson explained, this could be bad for those engaged in the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI).
“Once per million galaxies is very rare, and if grabby aliens were the only kinds to see, then the chances for SETI to see any aliens nearby would be very low,” he said. “However, it may be that there are many times more ‘quiet’ alien civilizations out there. The higher the ratio of quiet to grabby aliens civilizations, the closer might be the nearest quiet aliens to be found.”
Conversely, the fewer quiet civilizations out there (relative to GCs) right now, the higher our future chances of becoming a GC ourselves. Alas, this prospect also lowers the odds of us detecting and observing alien civilizations in our galaxy. In fact, the model Hanson and his colleagues created predicts that the “quiet-to-grabby ratio” needs to be over 10,000 to 1 for us to realistically expect that even one quiet civilization has ever been active in the history of our galaxy (ca. 13.5 billion years).
That ratio needs to be as high as 10 million to one for us to expect that any alien civilizations with a million-year lifetime are active right now in our galaxy. While none of these outcomes are particularly encouraging for SETI researchers, the research team notes that it’s possible that the volumes of space occupied by GCs are more subtle in appearance and that their expansion speed is slower. In this case, they estimate that we can predict there being signs in the night sky.
Another positive takeaway from this research is the fact that this sort of modeling is now possible. Whereas early SETI efforts were guided by conjectures that were subject to a lot of uncertainty (like the Drake Equation), we now have enough data on the types of stars and exoplanets in our Universe that we can make educated inferences.
“It’s exciting that we’re here now,” said Hanson. “We’re no longer speculating about aliens; we are reasonably sure they exist, and we can say where they are in spacetime. We have a simple statistical model that says where they are, what they are doing, and where we might see or meet them.”

The first documented report of a UFO,or flying saucer, in the United States was in 1947 when entrepreneur Kenneth Arnold claimed to see a group of nine objects flying at high speeds over Mount Rainier in Washington. The same year the Irish Defence Forcesbegan its dossier of unexplained phenomena in the skies. But almost 300 years prior to this 16 residents of “Poins-Town” in Tipperary attested to their eyewitness accounts of “the divers and most strange and prodigious apparitions seen in the air”.
In the latest De Burca rare book catalogue an extremely rare copy of this book, which recalls the sightings of “something like a ship”, relates the accounts given by a Mc C Hewetson and a Mr R Foster, along with others who saw the unidentified flying objects. Printed in 1679 on marbled boards, the good copy is listed at €1,750.
For fans of Seamus Heaney, item 120 is a signed inscribed copy of Death of a Naturalist, which is a first edition, third impression of the book “now recognised as one of the most significant collections of poetry in modern times”. Reading “With good memories of Oxford, Seamus Heaney 27th March, 1968”, the copy, which is in its original dust jacket, also bears the previous owner’s signature (€1,350).

Patrick Kavanagh also makes an appearance in Kavanagh’s Weekly, which was a unique and extraordinary journal of literature and politics. Published and distributed by the poet’s brother Peter, Kavanagh contributed most of the articles and some poems using various pseudonyms, while Peter wrote under the pen name John J Flanagan.
The paper was vehemently opposed to the contemporary Fianna Fáil government but failed to attract advertisers. In the penultimate issue it published an ultimatum that unless it received a donation of one thousand pounds (in 1952) the publication would cease (€2,850).
For Gaeilgeoirs or those with a penchant for Bram Stoker, item 280 is a very interesting copy of Dracula, which is the first Irish edition. The copy, which has an “exceedingly rare pictorial dust jacket”, was “published with the kind permission of Mrs Bram Stoker, 1933” and illustrations on the jacket are by AOM (A Ó Maolaoid, Austin Molloy) who also illustrated Clann Lir and In Óige an tSaoghail. (€1,250).
For the year that’s in it, being the 150th anniversary of the birth of Jack B Yeats, the catalogue has JM Synge’s, The Aran Islands with drawings by Jack B Yeats.
The good copy comes from the library of Dermod O’Brien of Cahermoyle, and tells the compelling account of life on the lonely, barren windswept islands off the Galway coast, in which Synge recalls: “I have never seen anything so desolate. Grey floods of water were sweeping everywhere upon the limestone.” It was here that the writer found inspiration for Riders to the Sea.
Dermod O’Brien had a significant role in the Irish art world during his life, and served as president of the Royal Hibernian Academy and governor of the National Gallery (€575).
If a spaceship from another planet crashed on Earth and the craft and bodies of an alien species brought to a secret military base, wouldn’t you think the greatest scientist in the world would want to analyze them? A UFO investigator has pulled together the pieces of such a story involving Albert Einstein, his young assistant and their trip to Roswell, New Mexico, after the famous UFO incident in 1947. Did Einstein choose Shirley Wright to accompany him to Roswell in the summer of 1947 to witness a “disc-shaped” craft and five small bodies that were “gray with a slight greenish tinge”? If it really happened, why did Einstein never tell anyone, why did Wright not reveal this until 1993, and why has it not come to light until now?

The 2015 obituary of Shirley Wright gives a synopsis of her 85-year life, including her connection to Albert Einstein. A new article on the UFO Explorations website by longtime UFO researcher Anthony ‘Tony’ Bragalia goes back to Wright’s first contact with Einstein and what happened next through an audio interview with MUFON researcher Sheila Franklin in 1993. According to Bragalia’s article, UFO researcher Leonard Stringfield assigned Franklin to find and meet with “Edith Simpson” – the pseudonym Stringfield had given Wright in a research article to protect her identity. Franklin not only found Wright but convinced her to sit for a recorded interview. Part of that interview can be heard here – unfortunately, Franklin could not find the second half of the interview.
In the interview with Franklin, Wright explains she was at a military conference with Einstein in Chicago he took her in a small plane to the base, where they were taken to a hangar.
“It was disc-shaped, sort of concave. Its size stood up to one fourth of the hangar.”
“The body of the ship was what I would call today a rather reflective material but when you got up close to it, it was rather dull.”
She says Einstein believed they were seeing an extraterrestrial craft. And then they saw what had allegedly been taken from inside it – five alike five-foot-tall corpses “dressed in tight-fitting suits” which she heard “had no navels or genitalia.” They were then taken to another isolated building where she claims they saw one being that was still alive – apparently gurgling in pain. According to the article, she told Franklin she later heard the creature had survived.
“I was just told to keep my mouth shut.”
Wright said Einstein had written a report on what they saw, but she did not have the clearance to see it and merely ordered to keep the entire event a secret. Franklin told Bragalia she tried to confirm it but found nothing specific. Bragalia doesn’t say why Franklin decided to share this story with him – merely to reveal that she provided Stringfield’s privately published “Status Report – UFO Crash Retrievals” monograph series where he referred to Wright as “Edith Simpson”. She also provided her notes from the interview, her subsequent memories and the recordings.
What can we make of Anthony Bragalia’s story of the alleged Roswell spacecraft and alien encounters of Albert Einstein as told by his student assistant, Shirley Wright? If you’ve got extraterrestrials in your possession, who better to study them than the greatest scientific mind of the time? However, from the account, it doesn’t sound like Einstein spent much time analyzing them or the alleged craft. And why would Einstein take a student assistant into the hangar and the rooms with him – especially one without security clearance? Einstein and Wright are no longer with us. No paper trail, no physical evidence and no other testimonials seem to have been found by Franklin or Bragalia, seasoned UFO researchers. No other accounts of this alleged event come up under searches. Why would Wright decide to open up to Franklin under her own name or Springfield under an alias – especially if she’d been told to “keep my mouth shut”?
Bragalia also gives examples of when Einstein expressed a belief in the existence of other life forms, but seemed to stick to variations of “no comment” when pushed on any personal experience he may have had.
