Mars helicopter Ingenuity unlocks its rotor blades to prepare for 1st flight on Red Planet
The Mars helicopter Ingenuity has unlocked its two rotor blades as preparations continue for the vehicle's first flight, due to occur no earlier than Sunday (April 11).
Ingenuity arrived on Mars Feb. 18 along with NASA's Perseverance rover, having made the long trek out to the Red Planet tucked inside the rover's belly. As of April 4, the little chopper has parted ways with Perseverance, preparing to take to the skies during a month-long test campaign. If Ingenuity's Sunday sortie is successful, it will be the first powered, guided flight on another planet.
"The blades of glory, aka rotor blades of the #MarsHelicopter, have been unlocked and are ready for testing," NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) in California wrote in a tweet posted early today (April 8). "Next, we'll do a slow-speed spin-up of the blades for the first time on the Martian surface."

Ingenuity's flight preparation process has been slow and cautious, in part because the 4-lb. (1.8 kilograms) helicopter made the journey to Mars in a folded configuration, tucked behind a protective shield.
After the rover dropped that shield and drove to the airfield, the helicopter's personnel had to order the device to unpack and slowly unfold itself. Then Perseverance had to set Ingenuity directly on the Martian surface and drive away, allowing the helicopter's solar panels to begin supporting the aircraft.

Unlocking and testing Ingenuity's blades mark the last major milestones before the helicopter attempts to fly. NASA officials have said they will test the blades first at 50 and then at 2,400 revolutions per minute before the helicopter attempts to fly.
Meanwhile, as Ingenuity makes its flight preparations, Perseverance is checking out the scenery and continuing to settle in on the Red Planet. Among other activities, the car-sized rover has been snapping photos of its own tire tracks and its sophisticated science arm.

Scientists have sequenced the oldest Homo sapiens DNA on record, showing that many of Europe’s first humans had Neanderthals in their family trees. Yet these individuals are not related to later Europeans, according to two genome studies of remains dating back more than 45,000 years from caves in Bulgaria and the Czech Republic1,2.
The research adds to growing evidence that modern humans mixed regularly with Neanderthals and other extinct relatives, says Viviane Slon, a palaeogeneticist at the University of Tel Aviv in Israel. “It’s different times, different places, and it happens again and again.”
The genetic history of the earliest humans in Europe and Asia has been blurred. Although researchers have sequenced DNA from Neanderthals and other extinct human relatives dating as far back as 430,000 years, there is a scarcity of genetic information from the period between around 47,000 and 40,000 years ago, known as the Initial Upper Palaeolithic, and no Homo sapiens DNA at all from before this period. Genomes belonging to humans from Siberia and Romania showed no connection to later waves of Europeans, but a 40,000-year-old individual from China is a partial ancestor of modern East Asian people.
Like all present-day people whose ancestry isn’t solely African, these early Eurasians carried Neanderthal DNA. Researchers thought that probably originated from mixing between the groups in the Middle East 50,000–60,000 years ago. But a 2015 study3 of the genome of the 40,000-year-old Romanian individual, from a site called Peștera cu Oase, held a surprise: a Neanderthal ancestor in the past four to six generations, suggesting that humans interbred with Neanderthals in Europe, too.
It was not clear from the Oase man’s genome whether interbreeding was common in Europe. He lived around the time when Neanderthal populations, already sparse, were beginning to vanish from the region.
Genetic mixture
The latest genome studies, both published on 7 April, clarify the relationships between Europe’s first modern humans, later Homo sapiens and Neanderthals, but also throw up some new questions. One study, in Nature1, is based on a tooth and fragmentary remains from Bacho Kiro Cave in Bulgaria; the other, in Nature Ecology and Evolution2, looks at a nearly complete skull from a cave known as Zlatý kůň in the Czech Republic.
The three oldest Bacho Kiro individuals, dated to between 45,900 and 42,600 years old, all had recent Neanderthal forebears, reports a team led by molecular biologist Mateja Hajdinjak and evolutionary geneticist Svante Pääbo, both at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI–EVA) in Leipzig, Germany. The genomes of modern non-Africans usually harbour about 2% Neanderthal ancestry, but the Bacho Kiro individuals had slightly more at 3.4–3.8%, and the chromosome segments — which shorten in successive generations — were considerably longer.
By measuring these segments, the researchers estimated that the Bacho Kiro individuals had Neanderthal ancestors as recently as the past six or seven generations — and probably in Europe, not the Middle East. “We saw these huge chunks. It was completely amazing,” says Hajdinjak, who is now at the Francis Crick Institute in London and was part of the team that identified the same patterns in the Oase man’s genome. “What are the chances of finding them again?”
The Zlatý kůň woman’s Neanderthal ancestry goes back considerably longer: 70–80 generations, or perhaps 2,000–3,000 years, says Johannes Krause, a palaeogeneticist at the MPI–EVA who co-led the study. His team could not date the skull accurately because of contamination. But on the basis of its Neanderthal ancestry, Krause suspects it is well over 45,000 years old, and in the same ballpark as the oldest remains from Bacho Kiro. “We do have, now, some of the oldest human genomes out there,” adds Hajdinjak.
Tracing the lineage
The oldest individuals from Bacho Kiro and the Zlatý kůň female are not related to later Europeans, ancient or modern, meaning that their lineages must have disappeared from the region. But, to their surprise, Hajdinjak and her colleagues found that the Bacho Kiro people shared a connection with contemporary East Asians and Native Americans. Hajdinjak suggests that the Bacho Kiro remains represent a population that once lived across Eurasia, but vanished from Europe and lived on in Asia.
The fact that several humans from Bacho Kiro had very recent Neanderthal relatives suggests that the groups mixed routinely in Europe, says Marie Soressi, an archaeologist at the University of Leiden in the Netherlands who plans to examine European archaeology through this lens.
Stone tools and other artefacts common to the Initial Upper Palaeolithic — and distinct from typical Neanderthal and later human toolkits — could be a product of cultural exchanges or even mixed populations, she says. “We really want to better understand what happened, what was the historical process and how peaceful were those encounters.”
A fifth force of nature has been found and it violates the laws of physics – why are we still in existence? “Muon g-2” sounds like a villainous robot in a sci-fi movie, but it’s actually the experiment conducted at the U.S. Department of Energy’s Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory in Chicago that resulted in the discovery that muons – massive cousins of electrons – wobble while spinning through a strong magnetic field and the force created is not known under the Standard Model of particle physics. That would make it a fifth fundamental force of nature. Is that a bad thing?
“This quantity we measure reflects the interactions of the muon with everything else in the universe. But when the theorists calculate the same quantity, using all of the known forces and particles in the Standard Model, we don’t get the same answer. This is strong evidence that the muon is sensitive to something that is not in our best theory.”
Renee Fatemi, a physicist at the University of Kentucky and the simulations manager for the Muon g-2 experiment, doesn’t sound too concerned in the press release that he may have helped create a force in the universe that isn’t gravity, electromagnetic, weak or strong forces. Then again, he may be playing the odds that the numbers are wrong — there is a one in a 40,000 chance that the result could be a statistical fluke. On the other hand, Professor Ben Allanach from Cambridge University, who was not involved with the study, sounds positively giddy in his interview with the BBC.
“My Spidey sense is tingling and telling me that this is going to be real.I have been looking all my career for forces and particles beyond what we know already, and this is it. This is the moment that I have been waiting for and I’m not getting a lot of sleep because I’m too excited.”
Allanach and other physicists are hoping a fifth fundamental force might help explain dark matter and other mysteries and puzzles of the Universe. Gordan Krnjaic, a cosmologist at Fermilab, told The New York Times he thinks this will also help find new subatomic particles, like the theoretical leptoquark or the Z-prime boson.
“If the central value of the observed anomaly stays fixed, the new particles can’t hide forever. We will learn a great deal more about fundamental physics going forward.”
Since it’s a possible new force of nature, it needs a name. Allanach has already given the possible fifth force various names in his theoretical models — the “flavour force,” the “third family hyperforce” and “B minus L2.”
Needless to say, Gravity and Electromagnetic aren’t impressed with any of those. However, they probably agree that Leptoquark would make a great name for a band.
“I do not believe that most advanced alien civilizations will be biological. The most sophisticated civilizations will be postbiological, forms of artificial intelligence or alien superintelligence.”
Does that speculation on the existence of other intelligent life forms sound scientific or philosophical? If your answer was the latter, you’ll be pleased to know it was made by philosopher Susan Schneider, who is the William F. Dietrich Professor of Philosophy at Florida Atlantic University, a recipient of the National Endowment for the Humanities Public Scholar Award, and NASA’s chief philosopher. Wait … what? NASA has a philosopher? How did that get snuck into the budget?
“As the NASA chair, Schneider has recently completed a two year project with NASA on the future of intelligence. She now works with Congress on AI policy.”
Susan Schneider holds the Baruch S. Blumberg NASA/Library of Congress Chair in Astrobiology, Exploration, and Scientific Innovation, the position which makes her NASA’s philosopher. She’s also the author of “Artificial You: AI and the Future of Your Mind” and “Science Fiction and Philosophy: From Time Travel to Superintelligence.” With that resume, it’s no surprise she’s a regular guest on numerous scientific TV shows and conference panels. The Daily Galaxy reviewed her recent study for NASA on how an alien intelligent civilization might think and whether they would have conscious experiences similar to our own. Her beginning point is where most other thinkers end.
“Artificial Intelligence is billions of years old.”
If it’s that old, Schneider believes it’s postbiological – a combination of life and machine. Since that’s where we humans appear to be heading as well, it doesn’t seem farfetched. However, she sees this as postbiological form as just the first stage or “window” of alien life – the bodily form. The second “window” takes into account that the alien life could be 8 million years old – nearly as old as the universe itself. That kind of development time would make them superintelligent when compared to our measly seven-figure years of existence. And that superintelligence would also be both life form and machine – artificial intelligence many orders of magnitude beyond what we know. Then she opens “window three” and answers the question of if they will be anything like us.
“… they will not be carbon based.”
This also should not be surprise. Carbon is not the sturdiest of materials – that’s one reason why microprocessors are silicon and why we’re already working to upload our intelligence to computers in an attempt to achieve a longer lifespan or even immortality. She also points out that peak brain neuron speed is 200 Hz, which is “seven orders of magnitude slower than current microprocessors.” In her book, “Artificial You: AI and the Future of Your Mind,” Schneider uses that to address the questions: “Is the mind just a program?” and “Can robots really be conscious?” Where does that leave us?
“We are galactic babies.”
Let’s hope the 8-billion-year-old postbiological AI beings that find us offer to babysit and educate us instead of looking at us like veal, piglets or salad sprouts. If they’re almost machine, maybe they won’t need to eat. We can only hope.
History is full of odd and eccentric individuals. Countless people have managed to make their mark with their odd behavior, abilities, claims, and achievements, very often scurrying off into the mists of time to leave behind more questions than answers, their stories cut short and incomplete. One such strange individual went out into a desert in South America, built a UFO landing pad, and then vanished off the face of the earth to take any answers to his bizarreness with him to never be known.
Not known is much about the earlier life of the man named Werner Jaisli, and he seems to have been pretty much a nobody until one day in 2008, when he had a life-changing experience. Jaisli had travelled from his native Switzerland to the country of Argentina, where he seems to have been living at the time in the town of Forte Alto. On the evening of November 24, 2008, he was hanging out with his neighbor Luis when the power suddenly cut out and the night fell completely silent. He would say of what happened next:
I was there, at Forte Alto, at midnight on November 24, 2008. Suddenly, everything was silent and the power was cut off. At that moment, two luminous objects advanced about 200 meters above the Calchaquí River. They were solid, circular, and had the color of burnished metal. They stood about 100 meters above our heads and projected a powerful beam of light. The strange thing is that this extraordinary light did not affect our vision at all. At that moment, something began to boil through my brain: it was an order.
The locals of Cachi have not seen him in the streets as they did during the construction. Some are even saying that he has since been abducted by aliens! However, others say that he simply got tired of all the attention and returned to his life back in Switzerland.
Werner Jaisli
A man has built an alien UFO landing pad in an Argentinian desert and claims extraterrestrials telepathically told him to construct it. He claims the alien contact occurred after he witnessed a recent UFO sighting in the area. The UFO landing strip was built near the town of Cachi, Argentina. Werner Jaisli constructed the pad. The Swiss man traveled to the South American country after receiving orders from an extraterrestrial source.
This order was telepathically beamed into his head loudly and clearly, nearly seared into him, and it told him to build a landing and launching pad for their spaceships, directing him to a remote area of desert near Cachi, a village in the Argentinian province of Salta. This telepathic message was so strong and compelling that Werner went about purchasing a plot of land in Salta, where he got to work building the vision that had been given to him by the aliens. It was to be a massive, sprawling construction he called the “Ovniport,” and over the next several years he would tirelessly and obsessively construct a huge, a 36-pointed star with a diameter of 160 feet, as well as a smaller 12-point star in the center and others around it, all of it laboriously handmade by himself out of piles of white and brown rocks. As this was going on, Werner became quite the sight wandering around the area wearing Druid robes and sporting a large, bushy beard. When it was completed in 2012, the Ovniport was an undeniably impressive feat which could clearly be seen from the air, and before long it was attracting quite a lot of attention from both locals and visitors alike.

When news got out about this bizarre UFO landing pad out in the desert, it became a minor sensation, with people flocking in from all over the world to see it. Many of the UFO enthusiasts who came here also reported that there were several UFO sightings made in the area after the construction of the Ovniport, making it quite a mysterious place, indeed. Then, just as his fame was growing, Werner Jaisli just suddenly vanished without a trace. He didn’t tell his neighbor Luis, made no mention of travelling to any of his few friends, he just disappeared into thin air. Authorities searched for him but his house remained untouched, with all of his belongings still there and no hint as to where he could have possibly gone, which started rumors that perhaps he had joined his alien friends and been taken away aboard their spacecraft. More likely is that he simply went back to Switzerland, or that he was worried about the law and fled. It turns out that in 2011 he had a run-in with police when he was arrested for stealing wallets from tourists, so perhaps he was feeling the heat. One person claimed that he had mentioned going to Bolivia on the run, but this could not be confirmed. No one has seen Werner since, and his whereabouts are unknown.
The Ovniport he built is still there, and continues to be a tourist attraction in this remote, desolate area with not much else to see. Why did he toil away in the hot sun building this thing? Was this really due to messages from aliens, or was he just a derailed individual with a strange obsession? Why did he suddenly leave and where did he go? Did he go off with aliens or is he sitting around somewhere having a good laugh about it all? We will probably never know for sure.

A Bronze Age stone slab unearthed in France in 1900 has been rediscovered in a new analysis that deems it to be the oldest known map in Europe.
A team of French scientists determined the markings were etched 4,000 years ago and depict an area in Western Brittany, France.
The slab, dubbed Saint-Bélec Slab, includes elements the team says they would expect in a prehistoric map - including 'repeated motifs joined by lines to give the layout of a map.
The engraved surface suggests that the slab's topography was purposely 3D-shaped to represent the valley of the River Odet, while several lines appear to depict the river network.

'A map is 'a drawing or plan of the earth's surface or part of it,' the team wrote in the announcement.
'The Saint-Bélec Slab does indeed bear the three elements that are most probative of prehistoric cartographic representation: homogenous composition with engravings that are identical in technique and style and repetition of motifs.'
The slab had been forgotten throughout time as it moved to different locations around France.
It was first re-used in a burial structure during the end of the early Bronze Age.

The slab formed one of the walls of a stone-made coffin that held a number of bodies with the engravings turned toward the inside of the tomb.
When first unearthed in 1900, experts moved it to Museum of National Antiquities in 1924 and then it was relocated to a caste in France until it was found in 2014.
However, it wasn't until 2017 did researchers from the French National Institute for Preventive Archaeological Research (Inrap), Bournemouth University and University of Western Brittany lay eyes on the carved slab.
Using high-resolution 3D surveys and photogrammetry of the slab, the team was able to confirm the engravings matched 80 percent of an area that surrounds the 18-mile long River Odet.
The slab, dubbed Saint-Bélec Slab, includes elements the team says they would expect in a prehistoric map - including 'repeated motifs joined by lines to give the layout of a map.

'This is probably the oldest map of a territory that has been identified,' Dr Clément Nicolas from Bournemouth University, one of the study's authors, told the BBC.
'There are several such maps carved in stone all over the world. Generally, they are just interpretations. But this is the first time a map has depicted an area on a specific scale.'
The sheet of rock is five feet by 6 feet long and is said to highlight that the area was a territory of hierarchical political entity that tightly controlled a territory in the early Bronze Age, and breaking it may have indicated condemnation and deconsecration.
An ancient engraving on a very old stone slab has been called the oldest 3D map of Europe.
The stone, which measures 2 meters by 1.5 meters (6.6 feet by 5 feet), has been named the Saint-Bélec Slab. It was initially found back in the year 1900 by archaeologist Paul du Chatellier during a dig at a prehistoric burial ground in Finistère, western Brittany, and was rediscovered in the cellar of the French castle, Château de Kernuz, over a century later in 2014.
Recent analysis of the stone revealed that it dates back approximately 4,000 years (between 1900 BC and 1650 BC during the early Bronze Age) and contains what archaeologists believe is an ancient map of an area in France’s northwestern region of Brittany.
The map was engraved on a large stone slab (not the stone mentioned in this article).
According to the Bulletin of the French Prehistoric Society, the “presence of repeated motifs joined by lines” indicates that it was engraved to represent an area of Finistère. Furthermore, experts who analyzed the stone believe that the indentations on the slab depict the River Odet valley and additional lines seemingly show the river network. As a matter of fact, thanks to high-resolution 3D surveys and photogrammetry, the experts were able to determine that the engravings on the stone are about 80% accurate to a location in Brittany that surrounds an 18-mile long stretch of the River Odet.
The 2.2-metre by 1.53-metre stone was first discovered in 1900 but then lost until 2014.

In an interview with the BBC, Dr. Clément Nicolas from Bournemouth University stated, “This is probably the oldest map of a territory that has been identified.”
He went on to explain the slab in further detail, “There are several such maps carved in stone all over the world. Generally, they are just interpretations. But this is the first time a map has depicted an area on a specific scale,” adding, “It was probably a way to affirm the ownership of the territory by a small prince or king at the time.”

It’s incredible to think that someone who lived around 4,000 years ago created such a detailed three-dimensional map on a stone slab. “We tend to underestimate the geographical knowledge of past societies. This slab is important as it highlights this cartographical knowledge,” Dr. Nicolas noted.

Perseverance has been busy lately. After testing its systems out, taking the first sound recording ever on the Red Planet, and dropping off its helicopter sidekick, now it has the opportunity to work on its primary mission: stare at some rocks. And occasionally zap them with a laser.
Nasa’s Perseverance rover has made an interesting discovery

That laser is part of the Supercam system we reported on previously. It sublimates part of a rock with its laser. The gas given off by the sublimation is then analyzed by spectroscopic cameras onboard the rover. That spectroscopy of the smoke emitted by the rock helps determine what the rock is actually made out of.

Recently, the rover came across a unique rock that piqued its scientific team’s interest. They duly zapped the rock with a laser, and Perseverance posted a picture of the now slightly more pockmarked rock on its Twitter feed.
The rover even challenged its followers to try to find the additional pockmarks created by the laser, which Twitter user @justpaladone and a number of others managed to do in replies to the main tweet.
Another Twitter user, Nicolas Worth, pointed out the similarity between the rock Perseverance is researching and one found by Opportunity in 2005 now known as the Heat Shield Rock. That rock turned out to be a meteorite made of 93% iron, and was the first meteorite found on another planet.

Whether or not Perseverance blasted a possible meteorite with a laser is still up for debate, and it’s probably going to be awhile before any results from the Supercam science mission will be released. Until then Perseverance will continue blasting rocks and patiently waiting for its winged friend to take flight, which should happen in the coming weeks.

I was walking my dog in the park as I noticed my dog look up toward me and for some reason I also looked up and noticed the bright roundish shaped object in the video I took. I heard absolutely nothing at all. This area does see it's fair share of military helicopters, osprey, coast guard, and E2 Greyhounds - my father flew c-130's and I've also seen them here as well...and all of them are loud. Sound here travels really far especially at night which is also part of what drew my attention. The video was taken after I confirmed on a flight radar app on my phone that it was not a commercial aircraft - and this app sometimes shows military without call signs - that wasn't present at all so I turned on the camera to film. I checked satellites when I got home and didn't see any with a western trajectory - not to say they don't exist...but this thing wasn't moving satellite fast - it was moving more like a a commercial airliner....but clearly wasn't. My eye didn't detect the flashing you can see in the video - it was definitively *not* flashing to the naked eye as it is in the video.

Here's an old discovery I made back in 2010 and wanted to revisit it to see if its still there and it sure was. I really thought that Google Mars map would have edited these faces, figure and giant arrow out...but they didn't and thats rare. Usually objects are edited out within 3-6 months after reporting them on Google Earth, however, Mars map is less edited.
There are four ancient monuments seen here.
1. Face one, human like, but with bigger ears.
2. Face two, non human, near leg of figure.
3. Tall standing figure, with long arms and legs.
4. An arrow pointing to the tall figures head.
The standing figure measures 8.6km or 5.3 miles from top of head to bottom of feet. The figures long arm measures 3.4 miles or 5.5km long. The Arrow measures 1.9km long, 1.1km wide at tip. The face near the leg is 1.76km from chin to top of head. The human face is 2.0km from head to lower neck.
The detail of these ancient monuments are outstanding. Its hard to believe that NASA has never discussed even one of them, let alone ignoring all four. These are too large to ignore.
Much like the large face at Cydonia, Mars everyone has heard of. I have found a lot of faces since I was 7 years old at Silicon Valley, CA including the face at Cydonia. Yes others take credit, they always do, but I know the truth and it feels like yesterday, even though it was 43 years ago. An upcoming report on UFOs from the government will include details that can’t easily be explained, a former top official of national intelligence hinted.
John Ratcliffe, former Director of National Intelligence, told Fox News’ Maria Bartiromo that there are cases where they don’t have good explanations for some of the unusual that they’ve seen. When that details become declassified, he’ll be able to talk more about that.
Ratcliffe said that a report to be released by the Pentagon and other federal agencies would present more details to the American people than declassified UFO sightings in the past.
Ratcliffe said that there had been sightings in different parts of the world, and when we talk about sightings, it’s not just a pilot or just a satellite or some intelligence collection. He explained that we have multiple sensors that are picking up these sightings.
In the unreleased sightings, Ratcliffe revealed that elements that are difficult to explain include movements that are not easy to replicate or traveling at speeds that surpass the sound barrier without making a sonic boom.
Maria Bartiromo later said in the program that the report is expected to be released on June 1 of this year.

Hundreds of new reports on UFOs appear everyday. One percent of those reports remain a mystery unraveled though 99% of them could be explained by natural or man-made factors.
Let us assume that aliens exist and visit Earth on a regular basis. What would be the best place for them to build a secret base? Seabed would be the best option. The oceans cover two-thirds of the planet.
The ocean remains virtually unexplored. We have a much clearer picture of processes that occur on the Moon, our knowledge of things that happen deep under the surface of the sea is scarce. As it turns out, reports about certain mysterious undersea incidents arrive steadily.
Those incidents are reported by naval officers who normally have good technical expertise and composure. The Navy officers are subject to annual medical examinations.
Submarines have no skylights. Maintaining radio communication under the sea is not easy though a radio wave passes through the water a lot better than it does above the sea surface. That is why submariners largely report incidents related to strange acoustic signals.
“I remember the time when panic struck the brass at the Headquarters of the Soviet Navy. It was in the mid-1970s, and the masters of the nuclear submarines began reporting strange sources of sound. The sound men on board the subs couldn’t identify the sounds detected in the Atlantic while on duty during the combat cruising,” says former senior officer of the Headquarters of the Russian Navy, Captain 1st Rank (Ret.) Vadim Kulinichenko.
“The crew of a submarine had to go though a troublesome experience while doing its best to sneak past the NATO antisubmarine systems and maintain the course as the sub moved at a depth of 200 meters. Some personnel, especially young seamen and midshipmen, could be pretty stressed-out from all that pressure. “
“And suddenly a duty sound man reports a case of ‘unidentifiable sounds’ to the captain’s bridge. The combat alarm stays on as long as sounds are being detected. Because nobody can be certain of the nature of the sounds, probably it’s some brand-new sub or a surface ship of the ‘potential enemy’. The sounds of the unknown could be detected several times a day,” says Kulinichenko.
What kind of sounds are you talking about?
“The sounds varied by the length and tone. The majority of them resembled a long croaking of a frog.”
“The number of incidents involving strange sounds kept growing. The Soviet Navy could not simply brush them aside. Finally, in October 1977, the Navy ordered the captains of the submarines to report all strange sonic incidents. And I know for sure that the U.S. Navy has instructed its subs likewise.”
“The operative staff personnel of all the fleets were told to gather information on any unexplainable acoustic manifestations. Every incident of the kind was to be marked in the charts. The naval officers whose job was to gather such information were dubbed “croakers.”
“There was a “croaker” in the North Fleet where I was serving at the time. Once I happened to take a look at his “for-your-eyes-only” chart. It looked as if the whole North Atlantic, north of Island and upward, had contracted measles. By the way, the term “croaker” eventually settled in. It was used for referring to the source of those strange phenomena,” says Kulinichenko.
Did the Navy arrive at any conclusions?
“No conclusions whatsoever. At first the Navy suspected the Americans, but those suspicions were pure allegations, there wasn’t any evidence in hand. A book titled U.S. Navy Intelligence Against the USSR has been recently published in Russia. It was written by two high-ranking American submariners. It is an interesting book with numerous accounts of U.S. naval reconnaissance during the Cold War era. However, there’s nothing in that book that can refer to the activity of “croakers.” Looks like the Americans have nothing to do with it.”
“Some authors simply confuse one thing with the other while writing about some ‘croaker’ allegedly captured by the Soviet Navy back then. The Soviet and U.S. Navy alike actively used sonic underwater buoys. In short, it’s a boy positioned at the sea bottom for transmitting certain acoustic signals that can be heard within a range of 20-30 kilometers.”
“Locating and destroying a sonic buoy of the potential enemy is really a big deal. For some reasons, the abovementioned authors take the cases of foreign sonic underwater buoys for the capture of ‘croakers’. Nobody has ever caught any of them yet.”
You said the Navy attempted to establish contact with the “croakers.” What are they, after all? Are they UFOs or sounds produced by fishes, other marine animals?
“So far there is no answer to this question. The ocean is like a forest in spring, it rustles thousands of different sounds. The majority of those sounds have been properly described and filed under proper categories. Any Navy training center can teach you to handpick sounds out of a cacophony. ”
“The list of sounds keeps growing. One theory maintained that the weird sounds were produced by female species of the killer whales while copulating. However, the killer whales are still out there in the ocean, and they keep copulating. But the mysterious ‘croakers’ are gone.”
“The first croakers were reported in the early 1970s, the ‘croaking’ reports reached a peak in the period from 1975 through 1980. Eventually, they just vanished in the deep blue sea. To my knowledge, the Russian submarines haven’t detected any new ‘croakers’ since the early 1990s.”
According to chief designer Nikolai Shevchuk at the Nikolayev Shipyard in Ukraine, Soviet designers worked on a flying submarine before the WWII broke out. The flying submarine was designed to carry a crew of three. It was designed to take off the sea surface and fly around a certain area searching for enemy vessels.
Having located a target, the winged sub was to dive underwater, approach an enemy vessel and launch torpedoes. The sub was thought to be an ideal weapon for conducting sabotage activities behind enemy lines.
The design of the flying submarine was approved by the Scientific Research Committee of the Soviet Union. But the project stalled in 1938 due to unknown reasons. Nobody has ever heard of it since.
It is quite possible that the project was put on hold at the time. Either the Soviet Navy or shipbuilders contracted by NATO may have resurrected it in the 1960s or 1970s.

The first submarines were built at the turn of the 20th century. The first mysterious incidents involving submarines came on record during WWI.
On July 10, 1918, the U.S. submarine L-2 and the German submarine U-56 were about to attack each other. A sound man on board the American sub reported yet another U-boat at a distance. No sooner had he finished his report, the first enemy submarine blew up.
The sound of the second unidentified sub died away 20 minutes later. The above sound man claimed that he received a strange message in Morse code: three long sounds and one short. The sounds represented the letters “OE”. The meaning of the message remained unclear.
The captain of the L-2 figured out that the other German sub torpedoed the friendly one that was gearing up for action. However, the postwar documents clearly indicated that only one German submarine operated in that area in the summer of 1918.
In fact, aside from the L-2, no other subs operated in the area. According to documents, the area was free of depth bombs at the time. The strange two-letter message was not used by either of the parties involved in hostilities.
The incident may have taken place due to some sort of confusion during the war. Today it is hard to find out what caused the incident resulting in the sudden demise of the German submarine. However, the statistics released by the International Union of Submariners show that during a hundred-year period, from 1904 to 2004, 204 submarines were lost due to reasons unrelated to hostilities.
In other words, each year 2.3 submarine perishes goes down. Maybe the actual number of casualties is higher. Not every country is willing to declassify data on its vessels deemed sunk or missing.

The U.S. has evidence of UFOs breaking the sound barrier without a sonic boom and making maneuvers impossible with known technology, the former Director of National Intelligence has revealed.
The revelations increased excitement about a forthcoming report detailing what the U.S. government has observed.
John Ratcliffe, who served as Donald Trump's Director of National Intelligence, said that many of the incidents still have no easy explanation.
'There are a lot more sightings than have been made public,' Ratcliffe told Fox News.
'Some of those have been declassified.
'And when we talk about sightings, we are talking about objects that have seen by Navy or Air Force pilots, or have been picked up by satellite imagery that frankly engage in actions that are difficult to explain.
'Movements that are hard to replicate that we don't have the technology for. Or traveling at speeds that exceed the sound barrier without a sonic boom.'
John Ratcliffe appeared on Fox News on Friday to discuss the forthcoming report
Ratcliiffe said that there had been more UFO sightings than the public previously knew
Navy pilots recorded seeing unexplained objects spinning in mid air, in the summer of 2014
Ratcliffe told host Maria Bartiromo that the sightings of 'unidentified aerial phenomena' had been observed all around the world.
'When we talk about sightings, the other thing I will tell you is, it's not just a pilot or just a satellite, or some intelligence collection,' Ratcliffe said.
'Usually we have multiple sensors that are picking up these things, and some of these are unexplained phenomenon, and there is actually quite a few more than have been made public.'
The government was, in December, given a 180-day deadline to disclose what it knew, meaning that the report should be out before June 1.
Ratcliffe said he had hoped to publish their findings before he left office on January 20.
'We weren't able to get it down into an unclassified format quickly enough,' he said.
The report was part of a $2.3 trillion COVID relief bill, which Trump signed into law in December.
The bill contained the Senate Intelligence Committee's Intelligence Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2021 that had in it a 'committee comment' section that addressed 'unidentified aerial phenomena.'
The report, produced by the Pentagon and the intelligence agencies, must identify, among other things, any threats posed by unidentified aerial phenomena and whether they may be attributed to foreign adversaries.
'Weather can cause disturbances, visual disturbances,' Ratcliffe said.
'Sometimes we wonder whether or not our adversaries have technologies that are a little bit further down the road than we thought or than we realized.
'But there are instances where we don't have good explanations for some of the things that we have seen.'
Avril Haines is now the Director of National Intelligence in the Biden administration.
The Defense Department announced in September the creation of an Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force on August 4.
Videos from the Navy were released last year through the Freedom of Information Act that showed UFOs moving at incredible speeds and performing seemingly impossible aerial maneuvers.
One of the videos was shot in November 2004; the other two were shot in January 2015. The three videos were code-named 'FLIR1,' 'Gimbal,' and 'GoFast.'
In the 2015 videos, Navy pilots can be heard expressing disbelief. All three UFO videos were captured by Navy F/A-18 Super Hornets.
The videos were made public and published because of efforts by the New York Times, as well as through efforts by To The Stars Academy, which was founded by Tom Delonge, the founder and lead vocalist for the bands Blink-182 and Angels & Airwaves.
Ratcliffe said it would be 'healthy' for as much of this information as possible to be made public.
A week before Ratcliffe stepped down, in January, the CIA released a treasure trove of newly-unsealed records.
They showed chilling accounts of hundreds of UFO sightings across the globe dating back to the 1950s - along with the international intelligence community's efforts to understand them.
A dossier with nearly 3,000 pages of documents about Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs) - the government's official term for what are commonly called UFOs - was published on The Black Vault website.
Thousands of paranormal enthusiasts pored through the collection of more than 700 individual documents, according to Black Vault's founder John Greenewald Jr, who has spent the past two decades suing the CIA to release the records and then scanning the pages into his database one by one.
The CIA purports that the files account for its 'entire' collection of declassified UAP intel, but Greenewald cautions that there's no way to verify that claim and has vowed to continue searching for further records.
The documents also show correspondence about UFO sightings between CIA officers and members of the military.
Sometimes the officials brush off observers' stories as purely superstitious, even when another explanation isn't clear. But in other instances the officers show genuine concern that perhaps something dangerous is at play.

In December it emerged that two Pentagon reports had been produced, providing detailed classified information about strange sightings.
The DoD's Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force issued the two classified intelligence 'position reports' in 2018 and summer 2020, and they circulated widely in the U.S. intelligence community, according to a detailed account from The Debrief based on interviews with multiple intelligence sources.
The position reports' startling contents included a leaked photo that has never before been made public, accounts of 'Unidentified Aerial Phenomena' (UAP) emerging from the ocean and soaring through the sky, and an admission that extraterrestrial origins for the objects cannot be ruled out.

The leaked photo was was captured in 2018 off the East Coast of the United States by a military pilot using his cell phone camera, the sources said.

It appears that the image was captured by the backseat weapons systems operator of what appears to be an F/A-18 fighter jet.
Experts were baffled by the photo, but noted that the object somewhat resembles a GPS dropsonde, an atmospheric profiling device designed to be dropped from aircraft, typically over a hurricane.
'These revelations are extraordinary, and give the public a genuine peek behind the curtain when it comes to how the US government is handling the UFO issue,' Nick Pope, who investigated UFOs for the UK Ministry of Defence, told DailyMail.com.
'What this new information does is confirm that the US government is taking the UFO phenomenon more seriously than ever before,' he added. 'I anticipate further revelations shortly.'
The Pentagon has not confirmed the existence of the two position reports, as well as the authenticity of a leaked cockpit photo included in one of the reports.
Even more shocking were the revelations contained in a second, revised report issued by the Unidentified Aerial Phenomena Task Force in early 2020.
The report delved deeply into the possibility that UAP are able to freely move both through the air and underwater, zipping through the ocean undetected and emerging into the air at incredible speeds.
The report contained an 'extremely clear' photograph of an unidentifiable triangular aircraft that emerged from the ocean in front of a F/A-18 Hornet fighter pilot, sources told The Debrief.

That photo has not been leaked publicly, but artist and researcher Dave Beaty's recreation shows it as described by sources: a large equilateral triangle with rounded or 'blunted' edges and large, perfectly spherical white 'lights' in each corner.
The encounter occurred off the East Coast in 2019, according to officials who had seen the latest report.
Two officials said said the photo was taken after the triangular craft emerged from the ocean and shot straight upwards.
Officials say the latest report focused specifically on the possibility of 'transmedium' craft that are able to operate both underwater and in the air.

At least six Super Hornet pilots made visual or instrument contact with the UFO on November 14, 2004.
The encounters, which are documented in numerous interviews with first-hand witnesses, remain a mystery, and the object's incredible speed and movements have led to speculation that it was extraterrestrial in origin.
The original FLIR video from the USS Nimitz encounters leaked online as early as 2007.
Witnesses say that clips of the video had been circulated widely on the Navy's intranet - used to communicate between ships in the carrier group - and an unknown sailor in the group likely first leaked it.
The clip became one of the most-touted pieces of evidence in the UFO community when the Pentagon confirmed its authenticity in 2017.
In January, Chad Underwood, the former Navy aviator who shot the famous leaked video clip, broke his silence in an interview with New York Magazine.

He said the oblong, wingless 'Tic Tac' shaped object was spotted off the coast of Mexico over the Pacific.
He also revealed that for about two weeks, the Ticonderoga-class guided missile cruiser USS Princeton, part of Carrier Strike Group 11, had been tracking mysterious aircraft intermittently on an advanced AN/SPY-1B passive radar.
The radar contacts were so inexplicable that the system was even shut down and restarted to to check for bugs - but operators continued to track the unknown aircraft.
Then on November 14, Commander David Fravor says he was flying in an F/A-18F Super Hornet when he made visual contact with the object, which seemed to dive below the water, resurface, and speed out of sight when he tried to approach it.
As Fravor landed on the deck of the Nimitz, Underwood was just gearing up to take off on his own training run.
Fravor told Underwood about the bizarre encounter, and urged Underwood to keep his eyes open.
He recalls how he suddenly saw a blip on his radar before tracking it on his FLIR camera.

'The thing that stood out to me the most was how erratic it was behaving,' Underwood told the magazine.
'And what I mean by 'erratic' is that its changes in altitude, air speed, and aspect were just unlike things that I've ever encountered before flying against other air targets.'
Underwood said the object wasn't obeying the laws of physics and dropped from 50,000 feet altitude to 100 feet in seconds, which he says, 'isn't possible'. He added that he saw no signs of an engine heat plume or any sign of propulsion.
The pilot refuses to speculate as to whether the object is an alien spacecraft or not, however.
'That's not my job. But I saw something. And it was also seen, via eyeballs, by both my commanding officer, Dave Fravor, and the Marine Corps Hornet squadron commanding officer who was out there as well.'
When do we know we’ve entered a ‘full disclosure’ zone for UFO information being held by our or any government? When people who are currently still in office or in power do the disclosing. That makes one recent revelation about UFOs following U.S. Navy ships in 2019 so special – it was made by a current admiral. Another recent revelation is of the ‘former’ kind – a former CIA director reveals a UFO encounter that is beyond explanation … unless the explanation is ‘aliens’.
“No, we have not. I am aware of those sightings, and as it’s been reported, there have been other sightings by aviators in the air and by other ships not only of the United States, but other nations — and of course other elements within the U.S. joint force. Those findings have been collected and they still are being analyzed.”

In a speech at a Defense Writers Group event in Washington this week, Chief of Naval Operations Admiral Michael Gilday, the U.S. Navy’s top officer, gave that answer when asked if he or anyone in the Navy had positively identified UFOs reported by multiple warships off the coast of California on two consecutive days and nights in July 2019. When asked if they were extraterrestrial, Admiral Gilday responded: “No, I can’t speak to that – I have no indications at all of that.” At all? Or ‘At all so far’? Reporters from The Drive were in attendance and attempted to follow up with the Navy, Coast Guard, FBI, and members of the intelligence and armed services committees in both the Senate and the House and received no answers as of this writing.
Perhaps they should ask former CIA director (1993-95) and former Under Secretary of the Navy (1977-79) R. James Woolsey Jr. Woolsey has released a book with co-author Lt. General Ion Mihai Pacepa, a former Romanian acting spy chief who defected to America in 1978, entitled “Operation Dragon: Inside the Kremlin’s Secret War on America” and is making the rounds giving interviews on it. During one with The Black Vault, he as asked about UFOs and said this:
“There have been over the years now events of one kind of another, usually involving some kind of aircraft-like airframe. I never thought there was anything to all this, it always seemed pretty far out to me.”

Sounds like any other politician giving an evasive non-answer … until he added this revelation from someone he “respects.”
“But there was one case in which a friend of mine was able to have his aircraft stop at 40,000 feet or so and not continue operating as a normal aircraft.”
That’s right … an airplane was reportedly suspended in space by something unexplained. Woolsey said he has no idea what could cause this, but then the former CIA director implied that this is not the first time.
“There had just been enough things like that that have occurred that I think there will be a lot of examination of what’s going on over the course of several months or years. I’m not as skeptical as I was a few years ago, to put it mildly, but something is going on that is surprising to a series of intelligent aircraft, experienced pilots.”
You mean like the intelligent aircraft and experienced pilots of the USS Nimitz? Or the experienced crews of the USS Kidd, the USS Rafael Peralta and the USS John Finn who saw UFOs on two nights in July 2019 that neither they nor their highest ranking officer can identify?
Something is definitely going on … if experienced personnel can’t identify it, it’s either secret aircraft a foreign country is testing, secret aircraft our country is testing on its own troops (wouldn’t be the first time) or something from somewhere that’s not either of those.
The most amazing …and unsettling … thing about these latest two revelations is the calm manner in which these two highly respected and highly ranked people delivered them. We could attribute that to experience and training … we could also wonder about brainwashing and mind control.
Until these UFO sightings are explained, all possibilities are open for discussion.
