Over 1,000 Stars Could Spy On Us If They Had Aliens
If there are in fact extraterrestrials in other parts of the universe, they may be able to spy on us depending on where they are living.
While this sounds like a creepy sci-fi movie, we’re actually doing the same thing by searching the universe for other intelligent life, so it’s very possible that other lifeforms may be doing the same. According to a new study, more than 1,000 nearby stars are in a great position to spy on our planet.
In a statement, Lisa Kaltenegger, who is an associate professor of astronomy at Cornell and director of the university’s Carl Sagan Institute as well as the lead author of the study, explained this further, “If observers were out there searching [from planets orbiting these stars], they would be able to see signs of a biosphere in the atmosphere of our Pale Blue Dot,” adding, “And we can even see some of the brightest of these stars in our night sky without binoculars or telescopes.”
Kaltenegger and Joshua Pepper, who is an associate professor of physics at Lehigh University and the co-author of the study, decided to think of Earth as a place for other intelligent life to study and they came up with some very interesting results.
By analyzing data gathered by TESS as well as Europe’s star-mapping Gaia spacecraft, they focused on stars that were located within a distance of approximately 300 light-years away from us and are positioned so that they can view Earth cross in front of our sun. They found 1,004 main-sequence stars (similar to our own sun) that may possibly have Earth-like planets orbiting them within the habitable zone. And 508 of those stars have a guaranteed “minimum 10-hour-long observation of Earth’s transit” when we pass in front of our sun.
Their study focused on just stars so the number of exoplanets that could be orbiting the more than a thousand suns with a decent view of Earth is yet to be determined. With the help from TESS and other technology, we’ll hopefully get an answer to that mystery in the near future. “If we’re looking for intelligent life in the universe that could find us and might want to get in touch, we’ve just created the star map of where we should look first,” Kaltenegger stated.
With 1,004 suns, there would most probably be at least a few planets orbiting some of them, so if there were aliens living on those planets, maybe they are spying on us. I wonder what they’re thinking…

NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA) has confirmed, for the first time, water on the sunlit surface of the Moon. This discovery indicates that water may be distributed across the lunar surface, and not limited to cold, shadowed places.
SOFIA has detected water molecules (H2O) in Clavius Crater, one of the largest craters visible from Earth, located in the Moon’s southern hemisphere. Previous observations of the Moon’s surface detected some form of hydrogen, but were unable to distinguish between water and its close chemical relative, hydroxyl (OH). Data from this location reveal water in concentrations of 100 to 412 parts per million – roughly equivalent to a 12-ounce bottle of water – trapped in a cubic meter of soil spread across the lunar surface. The results are published in the latest issue of Nature Astronomy.
“We had indications that H2O – the familiar water we know – might be present on the sunlit side of the Moon,” said Paul Hertz, director of the Astrophysics Division in the Science Mission Directorate at NASA Headquarters in Washington. “Now we know it is there. This discovery challenges our understanding of the lunar surface and raises intriguing questions about resources relevant for deep space exploration.”
As a comparison, the Sahara desert has 100 times the amount of water than what SOFIA detected in the lunar soil. Despite the small amounts, the discovery raises new questions about how water is created and how it persists on the harsh, airless lunar surface.
Water is a precious resource in deep space and a key ingredient of life as we know it. Whether the water SOFIA found is easily accessible for use as a resource remains to be determined. Under NASA’s Artemis program, the agency is eager to learn all it can about the presence of water on the Moon in advance of sending the first woman and next man to the lunar surface in 2024 and establishing a sustainable human presence there by the end of the decade.
SOFIA’s results build on years of previous research examining the presence of water on the Moon. When the Apollo astronauts first returned from the Moon in 1969, it was thought to be completely dry. Orbital and impactor missions over the past 20 years, such as NASA’s Lunar Crater Observation and Sensing Satellite, confirmed ice in permanently shadowed craters around the Moon’s poles. Meanwhile, several spacecraft – including the Cassini mission and Deep Impact comet mission, as well as the Indian Space Research Organization’s Chandrayaan-1 mission – and NASA’s ground-based Infrared Telescope Facility, looked broadly across the lunar surface and found evidence of hydration in sunnier regions. Yet those missions were unable to definitively distinguish the form in which it was present – either H2O or OH.
“Prior to the SOFIA observations, we knew there was some kind of hydration,” said Casey Honniball, the lead author who published the results from her graduate thesis work at the University of Hawaii at Mānoa in Honolulu. “But we didn’t know how much, if any, was actually water molecules – like we drink every day – or something more like drain cleaner.”

SOFIA offered a new means of looking at the Moon. Flying at altitudes of up to 45,000 feet, this modified Boeing 747SP jetliner with a 106-inch diameter telescope reaches above 99% of the water vapor in Earth’s atmosphere to get a clearer view of the infrared universe. Using its Faint Object infraRed CAmera for the SOFIA Telescope (FORCAST), SOFIA was able to pick up the specific wavelength unique to water molecules, at 6.1 microns, and discovered a relatively surprising concentration in sunny Clavius Crater.
“Without a thick atmosphere, water on the sunlit lunar surface should just be lost to space,” said Honniball, who is now a postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. “Yet somehow we’re seeing it. Something is generating the water, and something must be trapping it there.”
Several forces could be at play in the delivery or creation of this water. Micrometeorites raining down on the lunar surface, carrying small amounts of water, could deposit the water on the lunar surface upon impact. Another possibility is there could be a two-step process whereby the Sun’s solar wind delivers hydrogen to the lunar surface and causes a chemical reaction with oxygen-bearing minerals in the soil to create hydroxyl. Meanwhile, radiation from the bombardment of micrometeorites could be transforming that hydroxyl into water.
How the water then gets stored – making it possible to accumulate – also raises some intriguing questions. The water could be trapped into tiny beadlike structures in the soil that form out of the high heat created by micrometeorite impacts. Another possibility is that the water could be hidden between grains of lunar soil and sheltered from the sunlight – potentially making it a bit more accessible than water trapped in beadlike structures.
For a mission designed to look at distant, dim objects such as black holes, star clusters, and galaxies, SOFIA’s spotlight on Earth’s nearest and brightest neighbor was a departure from business as usual. The telescope operators typically use a guide camera to track stars, keeping the telescope locked steadily on its observing target. But the Moon is so close and bright that it fills the guide camera’s entire field of view. With no stars visible, it was unclear if the telescope could reliably track the Moon. To determine this, in August 2018, the operators decided to try a test observation.
“It was, in fact, the first time SOFIA has looked at the Moon, and we weren’t even completely sure if we would get reliable data, but questions about the Moon’s water compelled us to try,” said Naseem Rangwala, SOFIA’s project scientist at NASA’s Ames Research Center in California’s Silicon Valley. “It’s incredible that this discovery came out of what was essentially a test, and now that we know we can do this, we’re planning more flights to do more observations.”
SOFIA’s follow-up flights will look for water in additional sunlit locations and during different lunar phases to learn more about how the water is produced, stored, and moved across the Moon. The data will add to the work of future Moon missions, such as NASA’s Volatiles Investigating Polar Exploration Rover (VIPER), to create the first water resource maps of the Moon for future human space exploration.
In the same issue of Nature Astronomy, scientists have published a paper using theoretical models and NASA’s Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter data, pointing out that water could be trapped in small shadows, where temperatures stay below freezing, across more of the Moon than currently expected. The results can be found here.
“Water is a valuable resource, for both scientific purposes and for use by our explorers,” said Jacob Bleacher, chief exploration scientist for NASA’s Human Exploration and Operations Mission Directorate. “If we can use the resources at the Moon, then we can carry less water and more equipment to help enable new scientific discoveries.”
SOFIA is a joint project of NASA and the German Aerospace Center. Ames manages the SOFIA program, science, and mission operations in cooperation with the Universities Space Research Association, headquartered in Columbia, Maryland, and the German SOFIA Institute at the University of Stuttgart. The aircraft is maintained and operated by NASA’s Armstrong Flight Research Center Building 703, in Palmdale, California.

Notice the corned all around it had caught on fire and the people had put it out. Is this object a man made rocket part? There is a high probability of that, but if its man made, why didn't NASA or some other agency warn the public in that area of the world? Because there was no warning...I believe there is a big probability of this being alien technology.
If this was from one of the SpaceX rockets...Elon Musk would have warned people in that area of the world. Elon would not just ignore something that big and dangerous to harm someone. The eyewitness recorded a strange object over the Bronx this week. It was turning slowly and almost looks like a humanoid floating through the sky. US President Ronald Reagan was governor of California at the time of his two sightings back in California. First he was driving with his wife to down the coast to get to a Hollywood party, but was late because they stopped to watch a UFO over the ocean. The second was in 1974, when he was in his plane over Bakersfield, CA and him and his pilot saw a glowing light. Reagan stated: “I was in a plane last week when I looked out the window and saw this white light. It was zigzagging around. I went up to the pilot and said, ‘Have you seen anything like that before?’ He was shocked and said, ‘Nope.” And I said to him, ‘Let’s follow it!’ We followed it for several minutes. It was a bright white light. We followed it to Bakersfield, and all of a sudden to our utter amazement, it went straight up into the heavens. When we got off the plane, I told Nancy all about it”
Even singer and song writer John Lennon saw a UFO in New York out their penthouse window. What I'm saying is that some UFOs have time travel...which means they travel at faster than light speed. They know the future and past, but will come back to the past to visit some people, but historic records mostly has information about famous people...they are recorded the best in history and most easily to find their locations. And of course...most interesting to see first hand in person. Miley Cyrus...she wasn't lying to get attention or drugged out of her mind. She saw an alien in a UFO, because the alien was interested in her. Often such a visit means something important is going to happen in that persons future...for Governor Reagon...he became US president. For John Lennon...he inspired the make love not war movement and was assassinated. It looks like Miley is going to do something historic in the future.

She described the UFO that escorted her as a flying, yellow-glowing snowplow. The singer said that her friend also noticed it, along with other people at the scene. Miley explained that there were multiple cars on the road that stopped to take a look, so she thought what she saw was real.

The American pop singer said she was shaken for like five days following the incident. She also could not look at the sky the way she used to before because of fear of aliens who might make a comeback.
Miley explained that she didn’t feel threatened, but she noticed something sitting in the front of the UFO. She added that the mysterious being was looking at her, and they made eye contact. The eye contact with something that she couldn’t wrap her head around was what shook her.
It’s an “exciting new discovery” that NASA has been hyping up for since last week.
Water has been confirmed for the first time on the sunlit surface of the Moon — not just in the form of ice limited to the shadowed surfaces of larger craters as previously thought.
In other words, even when exposed by the warming radiation from the Sun, water is capable of surviving there. It’s a tantalizing result, and one that could have huge implications for human settlement of the natural satellite, but plenty of questions remain: we still don’t know if the water is accessible to use as a resource.
A pair of papers published by the journal Nature detail the discovery, which was made using NASA’s Stratospheric Observatory for Infrared Astronomy (SOFIA).
Using SOFIA, the team identified liquid water’s unique fingerprint near the southern pole of the Moon. It’s not there as “puddles of water,” as Casey Honniball, postdoctoral fellow at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center and lead author of one of the studies, described during a live stream, but spread out molecules of H2O.
It’s also not an awful lot of water: about 12 liquid ounces in a cubic meter of soil. It might also be quite tricky to extract as it’s completely mixed in with the soil.
The scientists suggest the water could have come through either the solar winds,or from impacting micrometeorites that may have contained water on their own.
The second paper found that the Moon is dotted with “billions” of tiny craters, creating shadowed regions all over its surface. The researchers concluded that these regions are technically cold enough to hold frozen ice.
These mini craters would also be far easier to access by astronauts. That means the discovery has major impacts on NASA’s plans to send astronauts to the surface of the Moon as soon as 2024 and establish a permanent human presence by the end of the decade.
“If we find that it’s abundant enough in certain locations, it would be easier to access versus going into these very cold, very dark places,” Honniball told The Verge.
In addition, water wouldn’t need to be brought there as payload on rockets, a highly expensive process.
SOFIA, a collaboration between NASA and the German Aerospace Center, is at its core a massive telescope mounted to the inside of a gutted 747 jumbo jet. A large door cut into the side of the body of the plane allows an 8.2 foot diameter telescope to make infrared observations at altitudes of over 40,000 feet — well above the atmosphere’s obscuring water vapor.
SOFIA hunts for a number of different celestial events, including the birth and death of stars, the formation of new solar systems, and the identification of complex molecules in space.
NASA had to ground SOFIA in mid-March due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, with flights resuming only in early June. The project even faced existential threats to its funding when no funding was allocated for SOFIA in NASA’s fiscal year 2021 budget proposal.

However, they also might have just uncovered proof of extraterrestrial life. That's according to one conspiracy theorist who claims the receding ice has revealed a flying saucer on Google Earth.
YouTuber MrMBB333 was sent the coordinates of the craft by a follower and created a video showing the strange, seemingly perfect circular shape, which is partially obscured by rocks. He states, "This appears to be a 60-foot-wide disc sticking out of the ground apparently being recently revealed by the melting snow and ice. There is the object, it looks like it was intelligently designed."
To support his theory, he alters the colors of the image and proposes that there is an "elevated circle" on the top of the structure.
Commenters are mostly in agreement, with one claiming, "It doesn't look stuck in the ground, it looks like it's hovering," while another added, "The black area under it looks like a shadow and if you look to your left, you will see a light source which looks like it's coming from inside the cave or tunnel."
Skeptics, though, think otherwise, with one stating, "It is just a small pool of water. If you look around at the other features locally you will notice that the other bodies of water also have a similar hue."

Genrikh Silanov, head of the Voronezh Geophysical Laboratory, was reported by Tass as saying that Russians scientists found a 20-yard depression with four deep dents at the site, suspecting that it was intact a UFO, adding, two abnormal rocks sent scientists in a jiffy. “At first glance, they looked like sandstone of a deep-red color. However, mineralogical analysis has shown that the substance cannot be found on Earth,” AP cited Silanov’s statement in the TASS report. “However, additional tests are needed to reach a more definite conclusion,” he added.

TASS report cited residents as eyewitnesses to the strange object that resembled a shining ball or disk 300 miles southeast of Moscow. Residents also reported sighting of small robot-like creatures similar to humans. “The aliens were three or even four meters (9 to 12 feet) tall, but with very small heads,″ TASS quoted witnesses as saying. ″They walked near the ball or disc and then disappeared inside.″ However, in a TIME report, writer Howard G. Chua-Eoan explained that the policy of glasnost — or ‘openness’ led the soviet media to be more expressive about events such as the Petrozavodsk phenomenon that involved 48 unidentified objects and the Voronezh UFO watch.
You can't send a spacecraft to the outer solar system with no rocket.

NASA is choosing between human missions to the moon and a robotic mission to Jupiter's icy moonEuropa as the agency manages its limited supply of megarockets in the coming years.
The agency began developing its Space Launch System (SLS) in 2010, intending for the rocket to be the agency's primary vehicle for crewed and deep-space missions. But work has been slow, and NASA and Boeing, which builds the vehicles' two main stages, are only now testing the core stage of the first SLS. It won't fly until late next year, when it makes the first flight of NASA's Artemis lunar-exploration program — an uncrewed trip around the moon known as Artemis 1. The schedule will therefore be tight for the third Artemis launch, which aims to land two astronauts near the moon's south pole in 2024.
Meanwhile, engineers are building the Europa Clipper spacecraft, designed to learn enough about the moon's ice shell, subsurface ocean and geology to help scientists determine whether the hidden ocean may suit the needs of life as we know it. And Congress has mandated the agency also use an SLS rocket to launch Europa Clipper — without consideration for whether one may be available.
"We have a requirement right now by law that says that we're going to launch this vehicle on an SLS rocket," NASA Administrator Jim Bridenstine said during a steering committee meeting of the U.S. National Academy of Sciences' planetary science decadal survey, an independent report that determines NASA's priorities, held virtually on Oct. 16.
And that's a major scheduling problem. NASA can't just whip up an SLS rocket from thin air: The agency needs to contract with different companies for different parts of the megarocket and allow time for manufacturers to deliver on those contracts.
For each massive core stage at the heart of an SLS rocket, for example, Boeing needs more than a year of preparation time plus three years of manufacturing and testing time, according to a NASA document reported by NASA Spaceflight. That means even if NASA signed its next contract today, the resulting rocket likely wouldn't be ready to fly until 2025.
The initial NASA-Boeing contract covered the core stages for Artemis 1 and 2; an agreement made in October 2019 transferred money for Boeing to begin work on a third core stage, according to a NASA announcement made at the time. The agreement was meant to pave the way for a full contract for core stages for up to 10 Artemis missions to be finalized within a year's time, the announcement continued, while allowing Boeing to begin work soon enough to meet the 2024 timeline for Artemis 3, the first crewed lunar landing since Apollo 17 in 1972.
And future SLS core stages are in the works, the company has confirmed. "The team is not just working on one rocket," John Honeycutt, NASA's SLS program manager, said during a news conference held in conjunction with the International Astronautical Congress on Oct. 13. "We've made great progress on Artemis 2 and 3."
But with NASA prioritizing Artemis 3, that still leaves Europa Clipper waiting for a ride. As of aSeptember status report, the Clipper team is planning to have the spacecraft ready for launch in early 2024, the same year Artemis 3 is targeting launch.
In terms of rocket science, right now, Europa Clipper can launch on a commercial vehicle, like SpaceX's Falcon Heavy or United Launch Alliance's Delta-IV Heavy rocket, although the mission would then need a longer cruise time to reach its destination.
"Because of that, we're planning to build the Europa Clipper and then put it into storage, because we're not going to have an SLS rocket available until 2025," Bridenstine said. "That's the current plan. I don't think that's the right plan, but we're going to follow the law."
Storing Europa Clipper, which is a $3 billion project, will cost the agency between $3 million and $5 million per month, according to calculations made by NASA's Office of Inspector General and reported to congressional leaders in August 2019.
In addition to getting the spacecraft off the ground sooner, a commercial launch for Europa Clipper would save the government money — $1 billion according to NASA's Office of Inspector General or $1.5 billion, according to a document summarizing changes included in President Donald Trump's budget request for the fiscal year 2021, which started at the beginning of October although the year's budget is still in congressional limbo.
Typically, NASA is free to launch its missions on whatever rockets the agency deems fit. But in the case of Europa Clipper, Congress wrote it into the appropriations bills funding the agency that the mission must launch on SLS.
That edict has led to the agency's current pinch: with the moon missions accelerated to land humans in 2024 as part of theArtemis programalso relying on SLS rockets, the agency doesn't have enough launch vehicles to meet the schedules of both programs.
"We have a lot of demand for the SLS rocket going forward; when we think about doing a mission to the moon every year, we don't have extra SLS rocket sitting around," Bridenstine said. "So when we take an SLS rocket to launch Clipper, for example, then that takes away a moon mission. And there are other opportunities to launch Clipper, but there are not other opportunities at this point to launch moon missions with humans."
TheEuropa Clipper team has warnedthat continuing uncertainty about the launch vehicle may begin to slow work on the mission, as engineers have to postpone work that would make the spacecraft incompatible with one launch vehicle or another.
Later in the same decadal survey meeting, when the steering committee heard from staffers supporting congressional committees that deal with NASA issues, Europa Clipper's launch vehicle woes came up again.
"All I can really say is, it's the law," Joel Graham, a professional staff member for the Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, said during the meeting when asked about the situation. "We fully support putting it [Europa Clipper] on SLS."
Graham hinted that frustration with the arrangement should be directed to the companies building SLS components rather than Congress. "I would certainly hope that our suppliers can meet that and provide the vehicle for it," he said. "I think we can all agree that's the best vehicle to send it on."
A House committee representative was more open to flexibility on the matter. "Our authorization bill includes language on just looking at the options and sort of the pros and cons of the various options," said Pamela Whitney, a staffer with the House Committee on Science, Space and Technology. "Obviously, there is policy in place, but we also understand there are various other factors that are in play right now."

What is creating the bubbling, gaseous atmosphere on Jupiter's moon Io? Scientists think they finally have the answer: volcanoes.
Io, the solar system's most volcanically active world, is one of four Galilean moons — the four largest moons of Jupiter, which were discovered by Galileo in the 17th century — and one of 79 total known satellites around the planet.
Io's atmosphere is known to be primarily made up of sulfur dioxide, but the source of this gas has long been a subject of debate.
“It was not known which process drives the dynamics in Io’s atmosphere,” Imke de Pater, graduate professor in the astronomy and earth and planetary science departments at the University of California, Berkeley, said in a statement. “Is it volcanic activity, or gas that sublimates from the icy surface when Io is in sunlight?"
A new study led by de Pater offers an answer.
"What we show is that, actually, volcanoes do have a large impact on the atmosphere,“ de Pater said.

Io's atmosphere is about a billion times thinner than our own planet's, which has allowed scientists to peer at the moon's surface, which is littered with lava lakes, liquid rock and sulfuric ice.
NASA's Jupiter-orbiting Juno mission, which will end next July, mainly observed Jupiter itself, so, instead of using an orbiting probe, de Pater has been studying Io using radio telescopes including ALMA (the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array) in Chile and optical and infrared telescopes like the Keck scopes in Hawaii.
De Pater and her colleagues studied 30 years of observations of the moon's atmosphere and found that every 42 hours, as Io orbits Jupiter, the moon's atmosphere becomes seriously unstable. In this new study, the researchers found that, on March 20, 2018, as the moon was eclipsed by Jupiter, which caused temperatures to temporarily drop, sulfur dioxide gas levels seemed to drop dramatically.
The temperature drop likely caused the gas to, in essence, collapse back onto the moon's surface, the researchers determined. While Io's average surface temperature is about minus 202 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 130 degrees Celsius), this drop in temperature would have brought it down to minus 270 degrees F (minus 168 degrees C), which is below sulfur dioxide's freezing point.
The team further solidified these findings when, in September of 2018, after the moon emerged from the cold eclipse, sulfur dioxide emissions returned to where they were before. (This bounce-back happened quickly, in just about 10 minutes).
“As soon as Io gets into sunlight, the temperature increases, and you get all this SO2 ice subliming into gas, and you reform the atmosphere in about 10 minutes’ time, faster than what models had predicted,” de Pater said.
The researchers also found evidence of "stealth volcanoes," or volcanoes that emit no smoke or other particulate, in observations of low levels of sulfur dioxide in the moon's atmosphere. Additionally, the team noted widespread sulfur monoxide gas in Io's atmosphere in July, but only over active volcanoes.
With this data and by observing the moon going in and out of eclipse again, the team was able to see just how much of the moon's sulfur dioxide is caused by volcanism. 'When Io passes into Jupiter’s shadow, and is out of direct sunlight, it is too cold for sulfur dioxide gas, and it condenses onto Io’s surface. During that time, we can only see volcanically sourced sulfur dioxide. We can, therefore, see exactly how much of the atmosphere is impacted by volcanic activity," study co-author Statia Luszcz-Cook from Columbia University said in the same statement.
The team hopes to continue to study the moon, its atmosphere and volcanic activity to continue to solve mysteries about the world including what temperature its lower atmosphere is.

The image, shared by photographer Austin Barnard via his Twitter account Thursday, shows a white Starship nosecone emblazoned with the United States' flag and NASA's recently-revived "worm" logo. Barnard shared the image with the text "NASA Artemis Moon lander anyone?"
It's uncertain what SpaceX plans to do with the nosecone, but Artemis could offer hints. The project covers a wealth of lunar missions, including a crewed mission in 2024 that's expected to send the next man and first woman to the surface. NASA asked SpaceX, along with two other firms, to develop a lander for the mission. SpaceX's proposed plan makes heavy use of the Starship.
"My best guess is this will be a mock up lunar variant for the Starship presentation," Barnard wrote on Twitter, referencing the event expected to take place later this month. CEO Elon Musk has hinted that the event could show a more refined design for the Starship.
SpaceX has big plans for the Starship. The ship is designed to transport up to 100 people or 150 tons to space at a time, powered by a Raptor engine that uses liquid oxygen and methane as its fuel. Prototype versions have reached 500 feet in the air, and SpaceX now plans to reach 50,000 feet with its recent model. The company aims to host a crewed mission to Mars in the 2020s, with a goal of a city on the planet by 2050.
In April, NASA announced it had chosen three companies to develop human landers for Artemis: Jeff Bezos' firm Blue Origin, space technology firm Dynetics, and SpaceX. These fixed-price, milestone-based contracts are worth $967 million in total.
The goal is to develop and demonstrate a human landing system so that one of them can support the crewed mission in 2024. This work will build toward a more sustainable system by 2026. Following the April announcement, NASA started working with the teams in a 10-month base period ending February 2021, where they will continue developing their concepts with added NASA expertise. The agency is expected to choose up to two designs in early 2021 for the 2024 crewed mission.
Beyond crewed missions, Artemis will cover a wide range of Moon-focused projects. It will also cover a small spaceship orbiting the Moon called Gateway, which will help support missions to the surface. The project also covers the Space Launch System rocket and Orion spacecraft, both of which are designed to carry crew to space. NASA has also chosen SpaceX to deliver supplies to the Gateway, using its larger Dragon XL capsule.
SpaceX proposed using multiple Starships for lunar missions. One would sit in low-Earth orbit as a propellant storage ship, supplied by tanker Starships. Another Starship designed for humans would fly to the propellant storage, refuel and continue to the Moon.

The ship itself would offer "a spacious cabin," alongside two airlocks so astronauts can explore the surface. The concept render shows a lift to the surface. The Starship would use the Super Heavy booster to leave the Earth, while Starships in space could be used to transport crew between the moon's surface and the Orion spacecraft and Gateway spaceship.
Unlike the renders supplied in the April announcement, the new nosecone uses a more recent NASA logo. NASA's more minimalist "worm" logo was introduced in 1975, only to be retired in 1992 in favor of the more complex original "meatball" design. In April 2020, NASA announced it was reviving the logo. The first rocket to use the logo in the modern era was the SpaceX Falcon 9 that sent up the first crewed Crew Dragon mission in May.
THE INVERSE ANALYSIS – It seems SpaceX may indeed be preparing a lunar Starship concept, perhaps for its presentation this month. The event would highlight SpaceX's progress on its contract for NASA's Artemis project.
It would make a welcome change from last year's Starship event. Hours before the unveiling of the first full-size prototype, NASA administrator Jim Bridenstine pointedly tweeted that SpaceX's Crew Dragon capsule was "years behind schedule." Bridenstine clarified a month later, during a joint press conference with Musk, that NASA does want to see Starship become a success. With Crew Dragon launched and Starship playing its part in Artemis, this year's event will likely see a warmer reception.
THE STARSHIP’S JOURNEY, SUMMARIZED

Een team wetenschappers heeft voor het eerst het onomstotelijke bewijs van watermoleculen op de oppervlakte van de maan gevonden. Eerdere waarnemingen waren dubbelzinnig: het kon om water (H2O) gaan, maar ook om het moleculaire familielid, hydroxyl. De methode die nu gebruikt werd, leverde ondubbelzinnige bevindingen op. De ontdekking is gedaan met de Sofia, een speciaal vliegtuig met ingebouwde telescoop dat vanaf 12 kilometer hoogte het heelal bestudeert. “Volgens de studie van de Sofia zit het water waarschijnlijk in maanglas verpakt, waardoor het beschermd is tegen de zon”, legt onze wetenschapsexpert Martijn Peters uit. “Maanglas ontstaat als er meteorieten op de maan inslaan.”

Er zou dus véél water op de maan kunnen zijn. Dat is dan weer mogelijk van groot belang voor toekomstige astronauten en ruimtemissies naar, bijvoorbeeld, Mars. Wetenschappers denken al aan een permanent station op de maan. “Als je water splitst in waterstof en zuurstof, dan heb je zuurstof om te ademen op je maanbasis en waterstof om je raket aan te drijven”, legt Peters uit. Ritje naar Mars? Even een tussenstop op de maan!
Of het water daadwerkelijk kan worden gewonnen en gebruikt, moet nog blijken.
Dat de maan waterijs bevat, was op zich al redelijk bekend, maar tot nu toe ging het daarbij vooral om diepe kraters op de noordpool en zuidpool van de maan. Zulke plekken zijn heel moeilijk begaanbaar. De NASA heeft nu vastgesteld dat er ook water voorkomt op plekken waar de zon op schijnt. Bovendien is er waterijs in zogenoemde ‘cold traps’, koude plekken in de schaduwgebieden op de maan. Sommige van die plekken zijn maar een meter groot, maar de maan heeft zo veel van zulke plekken, dat ongeveer 20 procent van al het ijs op de maan daar waarschijnlijk te vinden is.
Het bevroren water zit onder meer in de grote krater Clavius, die vanaf de aarde met het blote oog te zien is. Het gaat niet om grote plassen water: de Saharawoestijn heeft ongeveer honderd keer zo veel water als de maan.
Dat er waterijs verspreid is over de maan, is niet alleen erg aantrekkelijk voor bemande missies, het water kan ook iets vertellen over de geschiedenis van de maan. Vermoedelijk heeft elke plek waar astronauten landen wel water in de buurt, en bovendien is dat water eenvoudiger te winnen dan in een krater.
A truly fringe and controversial subject within the field of ufology is that of alien-human hybrids. There are certain factions of the field who feel that, for whatever reasons, that alien entities are experimenting to mix human and alien DNA to create strange new beings. It all sounds like something out of a science fiction novel, but there is much discussion on just this going on, no matter how absurd it might sound. Mostly this is all regulated to the far fringes of the UFO field, but on occasion it comes blasting to the forefront, and this is certainly the case with an Oxford professor who claims that aliens are interbreeding with us to help save us from the end of the world.
It’s rare that you see the very fringe, outlandish idea of aliens hybridizing with humans taken seriously in the slightest bit by an academic, but that is oddly exactly what happened recently with an Oxford University professor by the name of Dr. Young-Hae Chi, a teacher of Korean at Oxford’s Oriental Institute. Since at least 2012 he has been lecturing on the idea that aliens are not only already here amongst us, where they remain invisible to our eyes, but that there are more than one species of the extraterrestrials and they are interbreeding with us and mixing amongst us.

According to Dr. Chi, there are four main types of aliens here on Earth living among us as we speak, which he describes as “Small; tall and bold; aliens with scales and snake eyes; and finally, insect-like.” It is these insectoid aliens that he believes are the bosses, and outrank all other types. They are also the ones behind the supposed hybrid programs, wherein human and alien DNA are mixed in top secret experiments. He has also said that abducted humans are routinely forced to engage in “sexually oriented actions with aliens or even other human abductees under the influence of mind control.” And why would they do this, you ask? Well, according to him it is due to several reasons, but chief among them is because they are trying to find a way to help us survive through the catastrophic escalation of global warming in recent years. He has written of this in his book Alien Visitations and the End of Humanity:
One possibility is that they find our DNA valuable for the preservation of the stock. Secondly, to create species which can survive in the future climate conditions. Thirdly, some abductees report that these hybrids are of a very high intelligence, so are they producing these hybrids as a problem-solver, a future leader? It may be more or less assumed that the hybrid project is a response to the impending demise of human civilization. Not only scientists and theologians, but also non-human species who appear to be greatly concerned about the survivability of the human species. So, they come not for the sake of us, but for the sake of them, their survival, but their survival is actually our survival as well — the survival of the entire biosphere. Judging from the way the ETs are acting, they have a better view of our future, perhaps it is pointing to a pessimistic future.
He says that these aliens are all around us, but that we cannot see them for reasons he remains fairly vague about. He says that they are basically invisible to us most of the time, only choosing to show themselves to those they abduct, and has claimed:
If they are far, they shouldn’t be concerned about us. I don’t think they are from far away, they are just next to us, we can’t see them. We can use an analogy of fish which can think and perceive things only in the way they can and humans also perceive only in the way we can, so our perception of the world is limited by our organs.
As far as the hybrids are concerned, Dr. Chi has quite a bit of lore to offer on them, describing how they look more human-like with subsequent generations, saying “The first-generation hybrids still have physical features distinctive to aliens. But from the second generation … they have almost indistinguishable bodily features from those of humans, although they may still carry at least one fourth of alien genes.” Much of his hypothesis is additionally based on thousands of interviews he says he has conducted with alien abductees over the years. He even claims that the increase in UFO sightings and abductee reports in recent years directly correlates with the increase in greenhouse gases in our atmosphere, as this has sped up the need for them to create a “new model of Homo sapiens.” Of course he is aware of the skepticism these claims bring, and he has said of this:
As you might expect, most scientists are dubious. After all, there’s never been any good evidence that the abductions are taking place. No one seems to bring along a cell phone to make photos, or pocket an artifact from the saucers.
Dr. Chi has nevertheless held tight to his bonkers theory that aliens are implementing a breeding program to save us from the rigors of global climate change, and you can watch one of his far-out lectures on the matter here.
Is there anything to this, or is this just the delusional rantings and sci-fi imaginings of an out-of-touch individual? Whatever you may think, Dr. Chi continues to stand by his hypothesis and writes and speaks on it extensively. Is any of this worth looking into at all? In the end it remains a curious piece of strangeness to add to the pile of the already truly bizarre area of alien-human hybrids, and it is a wild ride whether real or not.

Too long for a movie title but plenty scary for a Halloween headline across Belgium, with many media sources adding “American” to the description because that makes it scarier … and it’s true.

“The crayfish is similar to the slough crayfish found in Florida in the US, with one important difference: it is parthenogenetic, which means it is able to reproduce without mating, and all offspring are female and genetically identical. That characteristic makes it easy for a large population to spring up quickly, which is what appears to have happened in Antwerp.”
The Brussels Times reports that marbled self-cloning crayfish (Procambarus virginalis) have taken over pools in the historic Schoonselhof cemetery in Antwerp where the bodies of 1577 British commonwealth soldiers killed in World War II are buried. They were investigated by Kevin Scheers from the Flemish Institute for Nature and Woodland Research, who immediately let everyone know he wasn’t there with a net and bucket to get rid of them.

These freshwater mutants were discovered somewhere around 1995, possibly in the Everglades, when people who kept crayfish as pets (have they tasted etouffee?) noticed that some female slough crayfish (Procambarus fallax) were reproducing with no male in the aquarium. Researchers confirmed that these were indeed an unexplained mutation – crayfish are not known to be parthenogenetic (reproduce without a mate and all offspring are genetically identical females) – and dubbed them the marbled crayfish (Procambarus virginalis).
Unfortunately, unscrupulous pet vendors seized upon this and made them popular. That was inevitably followed by unscrupulous pet owners tired of an overflowing aquarium (and not fans of etouffee) dumping them into local ponds. Marbled crayfish can live outside of the water, so the 10 cm (4 inch) crawled and ate their way across Europe after being introduced there in 1995. In 2014, the European Union instituted “a total ban on the possession, trade, transport, production and release” of marbled crayfish, but it was too late for the continent. They’ve also taken over Madagascar, which noticed them in 2018. They’re also banned in Idaho, Missouri, Tennessee, Michigan and the Canadian province of Saskatchewan.

If poison isn’t an option and they’re reproducing too fast to capture, what can worried Belgium cemetery owners do? While all crayfish look alike, the Louisiana farmers who supply 95% of the crayfish consumed in the U.S. stick to Procambarus clarkii (red swamp crawfish – the most popular) and Procambarus zonangulus (white river crawfish). Could Belgian be persuaded to try marbled crawfish soups, bisques, boils and étouffées? They also are used for fishing bait (bass like them). It’s possible that nature could take care of them (with assistance from humans) with the deadly crayfish plague caused by the North American water mold Aphanomyces astaci. The plague doesn’t affect all species of crayfish, so it may have to be genetically modified for marbled crayfish – and that opens a whole new can of “What could possibly go wrong?” worms.
Can they learn to love the crawfish boil?

The eyewitness recorded a UFO hiding in the cloud over Silay City, Philippines this week. You can easily see the myst of the cloud the UFO is hiding in. The bottom clouds are rough and make a good base for it, but the top is clearly make to allow them to see through it so that they can see with their own eyes...the ground and life below.
