The Weird Plumes of Jupiter's Moon Europa Are Spewing Water Vapor

The Jupiter moon Europa's elusive and enigmatic water-vapor plumes do indeed seem to be real.

NASA's Hubble Space Telescope has spotted indirect evidence of such plumes emanating from Europa, which is thought to harbor a huge, salty ocean beneath its ice shell. And researchers have now detected one such plume's water vapor directly for the first time, a new study reports.

"Essential chemical elements (carbon, hydrogen, oxygen, nitrogen, phosphorus and sulfur) and sources of energy, two of three requirements for life, are found all over the solar system. But the third — liquid water — is somewhat hard to find beyond Earth," study lead author Lucas Paganini, a planetary scientist at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, and American University in Washington, D.C., said in a statement.

"While scientists have not yet detected liquid water directly, we've found the next best thing: water in vapor form," Paganini added.

Paganini and his colleagues used the W.M. Keck Observatory in Hawaii to study the 1,900-mile-wide (3,100 kilometers) Europa, which astrobiologists regard as one of the solar system's best bets to host alien life. 

The researchers observed Europa for 17 nights, from February 2016 through May 2017. On one of those nights — April 26, 2016 — they got a strong signal of water vapor, in the form of a characteristic wavelength of emitted infrared light. 

And there was quite a bit of the stuff — about 2,300 tons (2,095 metric tons), according to the researchers' calculations. That's almost enough to fill an Olympic-size swimming pool (which contains about 2,750 tons, or 2,500 metric tons, of water).

The researchers think the source of this water is a plume, which could be coming from the buried ocean or from a reservoir of melted ice within Europa's shell. For starters, the observed volume is much higher than what is predicted to result from "exogenic" processes, such as the stripping of water molecules from Europa's surface by Jupiter's powerful radiation belts. And such stripping would likely occur fairly regularly, or at least often enough to be noted more than one night out of 17, Paganini and his team wrote in the new paper, which was published online today (Nov. 18) in the journal Nature Astronomy.

Multiple lines of evidence now point to the existence of plumes on Europa. For example, in addition to the new results and Hubble's detection of atomic hydrogen and oxygen (which presumably came from water molecules split apart by radiation), NASA's Galileo Jupiter probe measured a big increase in the density of plasma, or ionized gas, during a Europa flyby in 1997.

And it's becoming increasingly clear that Europa's plumes are sporadic. In that regard, they're very different from the constant plume wafting from the south pole of Saturn's icy, ocean-harboring moon Enceladus, which is generated by more than 100 powerful geysers that are always on.

"For me, the interesting thing about this work is not only the first direct detection of water above Europa, but also the lack thereof within the limits of our detection method," Paganini said.

Plumes like those emanating from Enceladus and Europa are very exciting to astrobiologists, because they're sending "free samples" from potentially habitable environments out into space for potential snagging by robotic probes. And there's a possibility that a NASA spacecraft could soon do just that, if everything works out just right.

NASA is developing a mission called Europa Clipper, which is scheduled to launch in the mid-2020s. Clipper will orbit Jupiter but study Europa up close on dozens of flybys, characterizing the moon and its ocean and hunting for spots where a potential life-hunting lander could touch down in the future. Clipper could end up zooming through the plume on one or more of those flybys, if mission team members learn enough about the feature in the coming years —  or if they just get really lucky.

U Shaped UFO Buzzing Apollo 12 Module As Lowers To Moon, 1969, Video, UFO Sighting News.

I found this UFO in an Apollo 12 index and it shows a U shaped UFO with a blue trail behind it. I added a bit of contrast to the photo to make its detail sharper. The object is huge and from the angle of the blue trail, the UFO must have come down at a 45 degree angle to the surface of the moon.

This Day In UFO History: Milakovic Family Encounter, Hanbury, England, Nov 20, 1968, UFO Sighting News.

A large, house-sized object witnessed by a family. It had a dark bowl-shaped bottom, with a clear dome on top. In the lit dome area, several humanoid figures were seen moving. Two physiological effects were reported: heat felt as object passed over and burning of the eyes when its light intensity increased. The small, dank mining town of Hednesford, Staffordshire, England, lies near the southern end of Cannock Chase. Mr. and Mrs. Milin Milakovic and their 11 children live at 432 Cannock Road. On the afternoon of November 20, 1968, the Yugoslavian couple and their 11-year old son, Slavic, left Hednesford on a house-hunting trip. They journeyed through the English countryside to Rugeley, Abbots Bromley, and stopped at Hanbury to view Hanbury Hall. Hanbury, on the Staffordshire-Derbyshire border, is midway between Uttoexter and Burton-on-Trent. Three and one-half miles to the northwest is Central Workshop 32 R.E.M.E., an army installation. Two miles to the northwest is a Royal Air Force station, used as an ammunition dump "and there are very vague rumors that nuclear weapons are stored there."

Three miles to the south is a World War II airfield, used by the Ind Coope brewery firm for light aircraft. On the road home, the Milakovics stopped just outside Hanbury to look at an old house for sale. As they continued on, dusk was rapidly approaching. It was between 5:30 and 5:45 p.m. The couple saw a rabbit scurry across the road, followed by a number of other rabbits from a hedge on the left side of the road. Glancing to the left, the witnesses saw a brilliant object in the field. Milakovic stopped the car as the UFO rose slowly and flew over the car. The couple got out of the automobile and watched as the object moved over a field on the right side of the road toward a house about 100 yards away.

As it got over the house, it stopped, hovered, and quivered "like a jelly." Doris Milakovic said that the air temperature appeared considerably warmer as the UFO flew overhead, but, as it moved on, the temperature dropped. She also said that the object looked "as wide as the house." For approximately five minutes, Mrs. Milakovic, her husband and son saw what appeared to be several humanoid figures walking across the bright top of the UFO. Intermittently, "some of the figures were seen to bend down as though looking at something in the part of the object below the rim. . . ." Then, the object began moving up in a "pulsating or jerky" movement. Its light intensity greatly increased and Milakovic felt his eyes were burning. Thoroughly frightened, Milakovic, normally a brave man, pushed his wife and son into the car and sped away from the scene.

Giant Statue Found On Mars, 100% Proof Aliens Existed, Video, UFO Sighting News.

Is is a huge statue that is half buried by the sands. Its easy to make our the waist, hips, chest, arms and shoulders. However the helmet is turned sideways, with its back to us so its difficult to see. The helmet also seems to have decoration on it. This statue was found by Art Alien of Youtube. Just as humans made the faces of presidents on Mount Rushmore in South Dakota...aliens made this statue alone the edge of this rocky hillside. This is 100% proof that aliens existed and they looked like us.

Aresearch team led by Professor Masato Sakai(Cultural anthropology, Andean archeology) at Yamagata University discovered 142 new geoglyphs, which depict people, animals and other strange beings, like a drawing what looks like an reptilian, etched into the desert in southern Peru around the enigmatic Nazca Lines.

The geoglyphs include humans, many different animals (including birds, monkeys, fish, snakes, foxes, felines, and camelids) and strange beings.. All of these figures were created by removing the black stones that cover the land, thereby exposing the white sand beneath and were found between 2016 and 2018.

They were identified through fieldwork and analysing high-resolution 3D data and aerial photography. Incredibly, one geoglyph in particular was solely discovered with AI technology, without the aid of humans, making it the first geoglyph discovered by an AI.

It is yet another example of how technology is assisting archaeology because a number of images were found using state-of-the-art AI technology developed by IBM, finds that were then confirmed with an on-site investigations.

The biomorphic geoglyphs are thought to date back to at least 100 BC to AD 300.

Scientists are still trying to figure out where Mars’ methane comes from. Now there’s a new mystery that might be connected: unusual fluctuations of oxygen in Mars’ atmosphere, detected by the Curiosity rover.

The presence of methane in Mars’ atmosphere has been a fascinating puzzle for planetary scientists. That’s because, on Earth, methane is linked to life, but it can also be produced geologically. Some of the best data about Mars’ methane has come from the Curiosity rover, which landed on Mars after a daring descent through the atmosphere in August, 2012. Now Curiosity has made another intriguing discovery: oxygen at the rover’s location is behaving in ways that haven’t yet been explained by any known atmospheric or chemical process. The levels of the gas increase much more in the spring and summer months than had been predicted, similar to the still-mysterious methane. The big question, of course, is why?

The baffling peer-reviewed results were just published in the November 12, 2019, issue of the Journal of Geophysical Research: Planets.

Sushil Atreya, professor of climate and space sciences at the University of Michigan, said:

The first time we saw that, it was just mind boggling.

Seasonal variations in oxygen levels in Gale Crater from 2012-2017. So far, scientists haven’t been able to explain these changes.

Curiosity analyzed the composition of the air at Gale Crater over three Mars years (about six Earth years), using its Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) portable chemistry lab. The results were pretty much what had been expected, and known for years: 95% carbon dioxide (CO2), 2.6% molecular nitrogen (N2), 1.9% argon (Ar), 0.16% molecular oxygen (O2), and 0.06% carbon monoxide (CO). (The methane is normally in much smaller amounts, about 0.00000004% on average).

The nitrogen and argon tend to follow a predictable pattern each year, increasing and decreasing relative to how much carbon dioxide there is. This is related to changing air pressure during the year, since carbon dioxide freezes as snow and ice over the planet’s poles during the winter, which lowers the air pressure. The air pressure rises again when the carbon dioxide evaporates in the spring and summer.

This is where it gets weird. Scientists had expected that the oxygen would follow the same pattern as the nitrogen and argon, but it didn’t. The oxygen level increased much more in spring and summer – as much as 30% – and then dropped back to normal levels, and even below, in the fall. This same process was observed by Curiosity each Martian spring and summer.

So what are the possible explanations? The researchers have considered several possibilities, but none of them explain all of the results.

Was there a problem with the SAM lab? The researchers checked but the instrument was fine and working properly.

Could carbon dioxide or water molecules have released oxygen when they broke apart in the atmosphere due to solar radiation? Probably not, since it would take five times more water vapor than exists to produce the amount of oxygen observed. Carbon dioxide would break up too slowly to generate the same amount of oxygen over such a short time period.

As for the oxygen decrease seen later, could that have been caused by solar radiation breaking apart oxygen molecules? No, since that would be an even slower process, taking up to 10 years.

The scientists involved also think it is unlikely to be caused simply by atmospheric circulation patterns. According to Melissa Trainer, a planetary scientist at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center (GFSC) who led the research:

We’re struggling to explain this. The fact that the oxygen behavior isn’t perfectly repeatable every season makes us think that it’s not an issue that has to do with atmospheric dynamics. It has to be some chemical source and sink that we can’t yet account for.

As Timothy McConnochie, assistant research scientist at the University of Maryland, also noted:

We have not been able to come up with one process yet that produces the amount of oxygen we need, but we think it has to be something in the surface soil that changes seasonally because there aren’t enough available oxygen atoms in the atmosphere to create the behavior we see.

The paper itself goes into more detail about each of these hypotheses and how none of them adequately explain the results so far. Yet something is producing a lot more oxygen during the warmer months than there should be. Intriguingly, both the oxygen and methane have been observed to fluctuate like this in tandem on at least some occasions, suggesting there may be a common source. As Atreya also noted:

We’re beginning to see this tantalizing correlation between methane and oxygen for a good part of the Mars year. I think there’s something to it. I just don’t have the answers yet. Nobody does.

On Earth, having oxygen and methane together is regarded as a biosignature, since they tend to destroy each other unless they are being continuously produced and fluxed into the atmosphere at relatively high rates. Because of this, the two gases are said to be in a state of thermodynamic disequilibrium.

By far, most of the oxygen and methane on Earth are produced by and/or consumed by life. Could that really be what’s happening on Mars? Or is there still some other unknown chemistry occurring? The Curiosity data showed that the background methane levels decreased at the same time as the oxygen levels did in the last half of each year, although the oxygen increases again earlier in the year than the methane, and is more variable year-to year. The larger “spike” in methane seen by Curiosity however, also occurred during the same period of time as the increase of oxygen in the spring. What all this means isn’t clear yet, and more study will be needed.

If there really is a correlation between the oxygen and methane on Mars, that could be a potential biosignature. A previous study in 2014 by Shawn Domagal-Goldman of NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center found that while oxygen and methane by themselves could sometimes be created by non-biological processes, on exoplanets for example, but finding them together would be a more convincing biosignature:

However, our research strengthens the argument that methane and oxygen together, or methane and ozone together, are still stro-ng signatures of life. We tried really, really hard to make false-positive signals for life, and we did find some, but only for oxygen, ozone, or methane by themselves.

These odd fluctuations in the oxygen levels at Gale Crater – with a possible connection to the methane fluctuations and spikes – are a fascinating new mystery for Mars scientists to try and solve. As Trainer summarized:

This is the first time where we’re seeing this interesting behavior over multiple years. We don’t totally understand it. For me, this is an open call to all the smart people out there who are interested in this: See what you can come up with.

• Bottom line: NASA’s Curiosity rover has detected unusual increases and decreases in the level of oxygen in the air at Gale Crater. In some ways these are similar to the fluctuations of methane, and may even be connected.

Bizarre Stairway to Heaven UFO Spotted Over Florida

A strange cloud formation recorded on video over Florida has baffled some viewers, with several pointed to alien involvement.

The clip appears to show clouds organised in a ladder shape or stairway, with rings going up into heaven.

Since conspiracy theorist mavi 777 uploaded the video to YouTube, it has caused a stir in less than 24 hours.

The sighting was recorded on video on October 27 in mostly clear skies, with a thin layer of clouds above.

A baffled YouTuber said they initially thought it could be trails left by a plane but later changed their mind. They said that it is very challenging to figure out what is going there.

Another person commented along with alien emoji, saying that the rings in the clouds are freaky hell.

One YouTuber asked what causes the mushrooms over Florida.

Some others suggested that a cloaking UFO partially revealed itself accidentally.

They said that the cloaking capability of the UFO partially failed, the reason it shows some of its features to the people on the ground.

Snow Flake UFO Seen Over Power Lines In Rio De Janeiro, Video, UFO Sighting News.

Here is a really strange looking object flying over some power lines in Rio De Janeiro this week. The object has ten arms sticking out. The UFO appears to be snowflake in shape, ten spines or more sticking outward. I have never seen a UFO this shape before, but they do come in all shapes and sizes. This one silently hovers over the power lines while it scans the information moving through the lines. The UFO doesn't need electricity, but does seek knowledge. Many UFOs over the years have been seen near power lines doing similar research. 

I am certain this is not a RC drone since it is silent and drones are very loud. Also it has ten arms or more, drones usually have six or less.

UFOs Seen Landing Behind Dubai On Nov 2019, Video, UFO Sighting News.

In this video, the UFOs seen here zig zag as they fall to earth. Although some may think its skydivers at night, no plane was seen in the sky at this time, and no pilot would fly without his lights turned on. They were intelligently controlled as you see from the behavior of them following one another. Dubai would be of extreme interest to aliens, since it draws a massive amount of tourists every year. These UFOs are moving with deliberate motion and clearly not space junk, a meteor or a crashing plane. These UFOs are probably landing at Dubai dropping of alien tourists. Yeah, some specie do walk among us.

Vijf miljoen jaar geleden werd S5-HVS1 uit een superzwaar zwart gat in het centrum van ons melkwegstelsel weggekatapulteerd met een ongeziene snelheid. Een groep wetenschappers onder leiding van Sergey Koposov van de Carnegie Mellon University heeft de ster ontdekt in het sterrenbeeld Kraanvogel. De ster werd - toevallig - gespot op relatief korte afstand (29.000 lichtjaar) van de aarde, met een snelheid die tien keer hoger ligt dan die van de meeste sterren in onze Melkweg.

S5-HVS1 werd ontdekt met behulp van de Anglo-Australische telescoop (AAT) en van ESA’s ruimtetelescoop Gaia. “De snelheid van de ontdekte ster is zo hoog dat ze onvermijdelijk de Melkweg zal verlaten en nooit meer terugkeren”, aldus Douglas Boubert van de universiteit van Oxford. De wetenschappers zijn enthousiast omdat ze al langer vermoedden dat zwarte gaten sterren kunnen verdrijven met erg hoge snelheden, maar “nog nooit zo’n snelle ster ondubbelzinnig konden associëren met het centrum de Melkweg”.

De onderzoekers konden het traject van de ster traceren tot Sagittarius A*, het zwarte gat van meer dan 4 miljoen zonsmassa’s in het midden van de Melkweg. Het is het eerste aangetoonde voorbeeld van het zogenaamde Hills-mechanisme, waarbij sterren met enorme snelheden weggekatapulteerd worden uit het centrum van melkwegstelsels. “Het is echt geweldig om deze ster te zien, omdat we weten dat ze in het galactische centrum moet zijn gevormd, een plek die heel anders is dan onze lokale omgeving. Het is een bezoeker uit een vreemd land”, zegt wetenschapper Ting Li.

De tweede Japanse asteroïdeverkenner vertrok in december 2014 om eind juni vorig jaar de 250 miljoen km van ons verwijderde steenklomp Ryugu te bereiken. De sonde heeft succesvol monsters van het oppervlak en voor het eerst van onder dat oppervlak vergaard.

De Hayabusa-2 nam gisteren vervroegd afscheid van Ryugu, om in november of december van volgend jaar na een reis van ongeveer 800 miljoen km op onze planeet terug te zijn. Aanvankelijk was de terugreis voor eind dit jaar voorzien. Wetenschappers hopen door de stalen meer te leren over het ontstaan van ons zonnestelsel. Mogelijk omvatten ze organische moleculen en water.

The U.S. Navy's acknowledgment that the 2004 videos of an encounter with a UFO were real has caused much consternation. Now, a new report says two "unknown individuals" told several Naval officers who witnessed the event, known as the USS Nimitz UFO incident, to delete evidence.

The report, published in Popular Mechanics, cites interviews with five Navy veterans who discussed what they experienced at the time while they were sailing on the USS Princeton on Nov. 14, 2004, off the coast of southern California.

One of the men, Gary Voorhis, said he was chatting with some of the radar techs on the USS Princeton when he heard them talking about "ghost tracks" and "clutter" on the radar system, a state-of-the-art Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) and AEGIS Combat System.

The air control systems were taken down, recalibrated to clear out the supposed false alarms when the tracks got clearer, he said.

“Once we finished all the recalibration and brought it back up, the tracks were actually sharper and clearer,” Voorhis told the news outlet. “Sometimes they’d be at an altitude of 80,000 or 60,000 feet. Other times they’d be around 30,000 feet, going like 100 knots. Their radar cross sections didn’t match any known aircraft; they were 100 percent red. No squawk, no IFF (Identification Friend or Foe).”

Operations Specialist Senior Chief Kevin Day said in the documentary film, The Nimitz Encounters, that his job was to "man the radars and ID everything that flew in the skies."

On or around Nov. 10, approximately 100 miles off the San Diego coast, Day noticed the stranger tracks on the radar.

“The reason why I say they’re weird [is] because they were appearing in groups of five to 10 at a time and they were pretty closely spaced to each other. And there were 28,000 feet going a hundred knots tracking south,” Day said in the documentary.

The Navy eventually sent out fighter jets to get a look at the object, with one succeeding in getting it on video--the now-famous black-and-white tape that was released publicly in 2017. Along with that tape, there were two other video recordings from years later that were released publicly by the New York Times, Fox News has previously reported.

The videos in question, known as "FLIR1,” “Gimbal” and “GoFast,” were originally released to the New York Times and to The Stars Academy of Arts & Science, co-founded by former Blink 182 rocker Tom DeLonge.

The first video of the unidentified object was taken on Nov. 14, 2004, and shot by the F-18's gun camera. The second video was taken on Jan. 21, 2015, and shows another aerial vehicle with pilots commenting on how strange it is. The third video was also taken on Jan. 21, 2015, but it is unclear whether the third video was of the same object or a different one.

After the incident with the "Tic Tac"-shaped object that Voorhis said gave off  "a kind of a phosphorus glow" at night while darting around, two "unknown individuals" took all of the data recordings.

“They were not on the ship earlier, and I didn’t see them come on. I’m not sure how they got there,” said P.J. Hughes, who was miles away from the Princeton, and was unaware of the unidentified objects, in the interview.

Hughes added that he was told by his commanding officer to turn over the recently secured hard drives of the airborne early-warning aircraft, the E-2 Hawkeye.

“We put them in the bags, he took them, then he and the two anonymous officers left,” Hughes said.

On the Princeton, Voorhis described a similar situation.

“These two guys show up on a helicopter, which wasn’t uncommon, but shortly after they arrived, maybe 20 minutes, I was told by my chain of command to turn over all the data recordings for the AEGIS system,” Voorhis added in the interview with Popular Mechanics.

It may be convenient to blame "unknown individuals" for the disappearance of the tapes, but Cmdr. David Fravor, one of the pilots who was able to get a close view of the object, said people accidentally erased and recorded over them.

“You know how it is when you go to and from cruise,” Fravor said in a January interview on The Fighter Pilot Podcast. “Someone goes, ‘What are these? Hey, they look like blank 8mm tapes. We’ll just use them.”

Earlier this year, the Navy issued new classified guidelines on how to report such instances “in response to unknown, advanced aircraft flying into or near Navy strike groups or other sensitive military facilities and formations.”

The Defense Department also briefed Senate Intelligence Committee Vice Chairman Mark Warner, D-Va., in June, along with two other senators, as part of what appeared to be heightened efforts to inform politicians about naval encounters with unidentified aircraft.

Warner's spokesperson indicated that the senator sought to probe safety concerns surrounding "unexplained interference" naval pilots faced, according to Politico. The outlet reported more briefings were being requested as news surfaced that the Navy revised its procedures for personnel reporting on unusual aircraft sightings.

President Trump said he has been briefed on Navy pilots' reported sightings of unidentified flying objects, but remained skeptical of the existence of UFOs.

"I want them to think whatever they think," Trump told ABC News' George Stephanopolous earlier this year, referring to the Navy pilots. "I did have one very brief meeting on it. But people are saying they’re seeing UFOs. Do I believe it? Not particularly."

In December 2017, Fox News reported that the Pentagon had secretly set up a program to invest igate UFOs at the request of former Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., who expressed his desire earlier this year for lawmakers to hold public hearings into what the military knows.

Mystery Creature With Square Head Featured in Newly-Found Ancient Peruvian Geoglyphs - Photos

Located about 400 km south of Lima, the mysterious lines and geoglyphs of the Nazca Desert have fascinated scientists for nearly a century, and been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site to ensure their protection.

Researchers from Japan’s Yamagata University have used advanced technology, including artificial intelligence, to discover a whopping 143 never-before documented geoglyphs along southern Peru’s Nazca plateau, NHK has reported.

The geoglyphs, compiled over the course of over three years through the careful examination of the faint outlines of the patterns, were revealed at a presentation on Friday.

The 143 new images, ranging from just five meters to 100 meters in size, include a mysterious humanoid, a square-headed creature, along with various  animals, including what appear to be cats, massive two-headed snakes, fish and even what looks like a dinosaur, with the newly-found geoglyphs said to have been created between 100 BC and 300 AD.
