Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

De laatste jaren zijn er door talloze mensen overal ter wereld oranje/witte bollen waargenomen die dikwijls in formaties door de lucht vliegen.
Een kenmerk is altijd dat ze geen geluid maken en hoewel het enige tijd vrij stil is geweest rondom deze objecten, duiken ze nu weer op.
Door de jaren heen hebben wij talloze meldingen ontvangen en ook artikelen geschreven over de mysterieuze oranje of soms witte bollen die mensen in de lucht waarnemen.
Het zijn niet echt de bekende UFO’s, dat wil zeggen een soort platte schijf met een koepel en ook zijn het niet de ook vaak voorkomende sigaarvormige.
Het zijn gewoon mysterieuze bollen die soms alleen worden waargenomen en soms in bepaalde formaties, maar altijd zonder geluid.
Misschien is er een reden dat er het afgelopen jaar relatief weinig meldingen zijn geweest van dit fenomeen, maar ze zijn in ieder geval nu weer terug en enkele dagen geleden waargenomen in Canada.
De getuige heeft het voorval aangemeld bij Mufon onder nummer 83517 en omschrijft de waarneming als volgt:
Op donderdag 27 april 2017 reed ik rond half acht ’s avonds met mijn drie dochters naar huis in West Kelowna in Brits Columbia in Canada.
Opeen zei mijn 6-jarige dochter: “Papa, wat zijn dat voor flikkerende lichten in de lucht?”.
Ik reed in zuidwestelijke richting en ik keek naar links toen ik verschillende (ongeveer zes) flitsende lichten zag die als het ware rond dansten in de lucht. Eerst had ik geen idee wat het was, maar dacht dat het misschien vuurpijlen waren of zelfs militaire vliegtuigen die bezig waren met een oefening.
Maar, omdat ik in de Okanagan vallei woon en er helemaal geen luchtmachtbasis in dat gebied is, wist ik dat we niet te maken hadden met een conventioneel militair toestel.
De objecten die ik waarnam, waren helemaal stil. Foor de manier waarop ze door de lucht bewogen, besefte ik dat wat ik zag niet een normaal of gemakkelijk te verklaren gebeurtenis was en hoogstwaarschijnlijk buitenaards.
Ik stopte snel langs de kant van de weg, greep mijn telefoon en ging naar buiten om de lichten te filmen. Toen merkte ik dat er plotseling een tweede groep (ongeveer vier of vijf) lichten verscheen, onder de eerste groep.
Het leek alsof deze lager vlogen bij het Okanagan meer voordat ze omhoog gingen en zich bij de eerste groep voegden. Deze twee groepen vormden samen twee verschillende formaties en gingen verder in oostelijke richting naar Kelowna.
Ik had mijn camera ingezoomd op beide groepen en bleef filmen toen ze wegvlogen. Of, tenminste, dat dacht ik. Na ongeveer 20 tot 30 seconden van “opnemen”, besefte ik dat ik de opname knop niet had ingedrukt. Ik deed dit alsnog en kon nog inzoomen op de objecten terwijl ze wegvlogen voor nog ongeveer 30 seconden voordat ze uit het zicht verdwenen.
Alhoewel het vroeg in de avond was en de zon aan het ondergaan was, was er nog steeds voldoende daglicht buiten. De objecten waren heel erg fel in de lucht. Ik ben er absoluut zeker van dat het geen vliegtuigen waren of wat voor soort vogels dan ook.
Toen ik de objecten voor het eerst zag, bevonden ze zich onder het wolkendek en lager dan de toppen van de bergen. De tweede groep scheen nog lager te vliegen in de vallei in de buurt van het meer.
Ik zou wat ik zag, willen omschrijven als oranje gloeiende bollen, omdat ik niet duidelijke lijnen kon waarnemen van een metalen object of iets dergelijks. Alleen maar lichten.
De objecten die ik zag maakten geen geluid.
Ook boven ons land zijn dit soort objecten regelmatig waargenomen, maar ook hier is het de laatste tijd relatief rustig geweest, althans wij hebben er weinig van gemerkt in de vorm van meldingen of berichten.
"Omstreeks 23.15-23.30 uur gisteravond, thuis, maandag 8 juli, was ik buiten een luchtje aan het scheppen. Naar de lucht kijkend zag ik een onverklaarbaar verschijnsel. Iets wat ik nog nooit eerder zo heb meegemaakt. Ik heb op het punt gestaan om de buren er bij te halen, maar vond het te laat om ze nog te storen.
Het betrof een serie helder verlichte objecten, constant licht, kleur geel-oranje, die zich met grote snelheid in een baan van Noord naar Zuid bewogen. Ik schat enkele tientallen stuks.
Ze bewogen zich met een constante snelheid in een strak formatieverband, dat onderweg qua verband en snelheid niet waarneembaar veranderde. De onderlinge afstand was naar ik schat een tot een paar honderd meter, de hoogte schat ik op 1 tot 2 km. De formatie was niet in lijn maar zat binnen een baan van enkele honderden meters. De eerste objecten waren al aan de Zuidelijke kant uit zicht verdwenen, terwijl nieuwe nog enige tijd vanaf de Noordkant in zicht kwamen.
Het was donker en een heldere, onbewolkte hemel. Het geheel voltrok zich in absolute stilte. Geen enkel motorgeluid was te horen. Het fenomeen duurde minuten lang.
Ik heb geen foto's genomen omdat de geloofwaardigheid ervan even discutabel is als mijn verhaal. Bovendien hechtte ik meer aan de analyse er naar kijkend dan aan de fotografische opname. Gezien de duisternis was er buiten het lichtverschijnsel eigenlijk niets te zien. De doorsnee van de lichtvlek per object was optisch 2-3 centimeter, wat op die hoogte een object van een aantal meters in doorsnede zou moeten betreffen. Een fenomeen als afgeleide van laserbeams lijkt me onmogelijk.
Ik heb verder verschillende mogelijkheden figuurlijk tegen het licht gehouden, maar kan er geen sluitende verklaring voor vinden. Wat er als optie over blijft is raadselachtig. Intussen heb ik de politie gebeld om te kijken of er andere meldingen waren. Bovendien heb ik het Radarcentrum in Nieuw Millingen van de Luchtmacht, dat in het kader van luchtverdediging 7 dagen per week, 24 uur per dag het NL luchtruim bewaakt, gebeld. In beide gevallen was er geen bevestiging van waarnemingen of meldingen hunnerzijds".
Is het inderdaad stil geworden in het Nederlandse luchtruim voor wat betreft oranje en/of witte bollen? Laat het ons weten.

A witness in London had taken photos of a UFO that seemed to have been tailing a commercial airline.
A British witness at London reported watching and photographing multiple objects that appeared to be following an aircraft, according to testimony in Case 82822 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was in the Fulham section of London walking to a café when the incident occurred.
“I looked up and saw a star-like object about seven aircraft widths to the left of the passenger aircraft,” the witness stated.“Then noticed several lights to the right of the aircraft. As I looked up: about 7, 12 and 15 aircraft widths to the right. They followed the aircraft and continued to follow it, keeping the same relative distance, as it banked gently toward a more northerly path.”

The witness first thought the objects were balloons.
“At first I thought they were balloons reflecting bright sunlight. I’ve seen some rarely. But these lights remained at a constant speed, had a smooth direction and all turned relative to each other, and at same distance from each other. Also, they seemed to emit a constant light and not reflect it, whereas balloons change intensity as they tilt relative to me/observer and the sun. The aircraft wasn’t landing at a London airport, those are only a few thousand feet above observer-point and the aircraft had a vapor trail and I should imagine it was over 15-20,000 feet above me. Aircraft and light were obscured by city housing then.”

Here is a great capture of a UFO shooting past the Mars Curiosity Rover. The UFO is long and and well lit up from one of the Mars moons. At least, it looks like a moon, except for the beam of light coming from it. The UFO passes just below it and the sunlight bouncing off the moon hits the UFO. Rovers don't lie, they just record what they see and transmit to Earth. They have no feelings, no emotions, no reservations, just pure tech. Terrific find by Streetcap1.

This dark disk was seen over Mexico city two months back. The disk is very dark, which could be because the sun on the other side of it. These dark UFOs have been seen before. Once back in 2010 a professor at a university here in Taiwan took a similar photo of a craft, motorcycle size, dark that was holding position near a power line. (Click here to view that post).
This is a awesome capture, but I really wish the person had tried to hold the video more still, but it must have been far away, because the farther the object is, the harder it is to hold it in the view finder without jiggling the camera.

Berichten over neergestorte buitenaardse schepen werden na de vreemde gebeurtenissen bij Roswell in 1947 snel onder het tapijt geveegd.
Ingewijden begonnen zich uit te spreken en boden ons een glimp in de schimmige wereld van geheimhouding en doofpotten.
De Amerikaanse onderzoeksjournaliste Linda Moulton Howe kwam erachter dat er in de jaren veertig nog meer UFO’s zijn gecrasht in Amerika.
Drie crashplekken
In het programma Truth Hunter op Gaia vertelt ze dat ze in de jaren zeventig met dit onderwerp in aanraking kwam toen ze onderzoek deed naar gevallen van veeverminking.
Een sheriff en andere politieagenten zeiden tegen haar dat ‘de daders wezens uit de ruimte waren’.
Over het Roswellincident zegt ze: “We weten nu dat er tijdens een onweersbui in de nacht van 3 op 4 juli 1947 drie onbekende objecten op de radar verschenen, waarna drie crashplekken gemeld werden.”
Lichamen
In een rapport uit 1952 van Majestic 12, een geheime commissie samengesteld door president Truman, valt te lezen dat er vijf lichamen zijn geborgen bij de crash.
Twee lichamen werden gevonden in een zwaarbeschadigde ontsnappingscapsule, de resterende drie op enige afstand van de capsule.
Een andere overheidsgroep, de Interplanetary Phenomenon Unit, schreef in een rapport dat er ‘andere lichamen waren gevonden die eruitzagen alsof ze waren ontleed als een kikker’.
Resten van dieren
In één van de gecrashte vaartuigen zijn naar verluidt resten van dieren gevonden, aldus de groep.
De schepen crashten bij Roswell, even ten zuiden van Socorro en het derde object kwam neer in het reservaat van de Mescalero.
In zijn boek MO41: The Bombshell Before Roswell schrijft Paul Blake Smith dat al in 1941, zes jaar voor het Roswellincident, een UFO was gecrasht in Amerika, vlak bij Cape Girardeau.
Geheim
Het leger zou toen drie identieke lichamen geborgen hebben ‘van wezens die niet van deze planeet kwamen’.
In een Amerikaans overheidsdocument valt te lezen dat de atoombom is voortgekomen uit de technologie die tijdens die crash is buitgemaakt.
“Dat betekent dat presidenten Roosevelt en Truman al tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog, nog vóór de Roswell-crash, wisten van een buitenaardse aanwezigheid,” aldus Howe.

Experts stellen dat aliens nog altijd hier zijn en dat er een geheim ruimteprogramma is waar de meeste mensen geen weet van hebben.
Laura Eisenhower, de achterkleindochter van president Dwight Eisenhower, claimt dat er al bases op Mars zijn.
De Amerikaanse sergeant Clifford Stone heeft openlijk gezegd dat hij naar locaties werd gestuurd waar onbekende vaartuigen waren neergestort.
Solar Warden
“Wij zagen lichamen van entiteiten die niet op deze planeet waren geboren,” verklaarde Stone, die toevoegde dat hij ook levende aliens heeft gezien.
William Tompkins onthulde dat hij voor vliegtuigbouwer Douglas ruimteschepen voor de Amerikaanse marine moest ontwerpen. Dit project werd Solar Warden genoemd.
De grotere schepen hadden een omvang van één tot zes kilometer, verklaarde Tompkins.
Slot en grendel
Deze ruimteschepen werden volgens hem in de jaren zeventig daadwerkelijk gebouwd in een ondergrondse installatie in Utah.
Al deze technologieën worden achter slot en grendel bewaard zodat de rest van de wereld ze niet kan ontwikkelen, legde schrijver en onderzoeker Richard Dolan uit.

Steve Bassett probeert de Amerikaanse overheid al 20 jaar lang zo ver te krijgen om de waarheid over buitenaards bezoek naar buiten te brengen.
Hij is in Washington de enige geregistreerde lobbyist die zich met dit onderwerp bezighoudt. In een interview met de Daily Express zegt hij dat disclosure wel eens voor de deur zou kunnen staan.
Drie gebeurtenissen
Complottheoretici stellen dat informatie over aliens al sinds juli 1947, toen een vliegende schotel neerkwam bij Roswell, wordt achtergehouden.
Er zouden in het vaartuig onder meer lichamen van buitenaardsen zijn gevonden, die vervolgens werden overgebracht naar een topgeheime legerbasis.
Volgens Bassett zijn er onlangs drie gebeurtenissen geweest waaruit blijkt dat we warm worden gemaakt voor het buitenaardse.
Pentagon
“Tom DeLonge, de zanger van Blink-182, zei op Coast to Coast AM Radio dat het Pentagon hem had benaderd om hem te helpen informatie naar buiten te brengen,” zei Bassett.
DeLonge zei dat hij een adviescommissie van 10 mensen had samengesteld die hem gingen helpen de benodigde informatie te krijgen.
Later bleek uit gelekte e-mails dat DeLonge hierover contact had met Hillary Clintons campagnemanager John Podesta.
Bereid
De tweede gebeurtenis vond plaats op de dag na Trumps overwinning. “Ik kreeg een anonieme sms, maar ik denk wel te weten wie hem stuurde,” zei Bassett.
“In de sms stond dat er mensen binnen het ministerie van Defensie zijn die bereid zijn mee te werken als iemand hen benadert, als de minister hen benadert,” voegde hij toe.
Tot slot gaf de CIA twee dagen voordat Trump het Witte Huis betrok 13,5 miljoen documenten vrij over paranormale verschijnselen en UFO-waarnemingen.
Opvolger
Bassett zag dit als de laatste poging om het nieuws naar buiten te brengen voor Trumps inauguratie.
Hij denkt echter niet dat Trump de geschikte kandidaat is om het ‘waarheidsembargo’ te doorbreken.
De lobbyist denkt dat president Trump zal worden afgezet en dat zijn opvolger de aankondiging gaat doen.

Wanneer er ergens iets gebeurt, dan kan je dat nog altijd aan het toeval toeschrijven of denken dat het misschien wel niet echt is.
Als er echter grote sigaarvormige UFO's te zien zijn met felle lichten die richting aarde schijnen in Frankrijk, China en Australië, dan lijkt het toch iets meer te zijn dan toeval.
Een populair Youtube kanaal zoals de jonge Tyler heeft met zijn Secureteam, krijgt ook automatisch veel tips binnen van kijkers.
Eén van afgelopen week die hij binnenkreeg was van een kijker die een bijzondere filmopname had van een UFO boven Frankrijk.
De korte film lijkt op een scene uit een Hollywood film, waarbij de aliens proberen contact te zoeken met de mensheid.
Meerdere UFO’s die laag boven de grond zweven, waarvan één een cilindervorm heeft en met geregelde tussenpozen een felle lichtstraal op de aarde laat schijnen.
Het ziet er als volgt uit:
Er is verder weinig bekend over waar deze opname is gemaakt en Tyler begon zich al af te vragen of hier misschien sprake was van een vervalsing, tot hij ging spitten in zijn eigen archief.
En daar kwam hij nog een tweetal gevallen tegen, waar vergelijkbare UFO’s werden waargenomen.
Het meest recente voorval van de twee speelde zich af aan de Goldcoast van Australië, waar een aan een huis gemonteerde webcam in november 2013 heel bijzondere beelden maakte van een UFO zoals je in de volgende afbeeldingen kunt zien.
Ook hier een laagvliegende langwerpig type die een felle lichtstraal op de aarde laat schijnen.
De opname is gemaakt door een webcam en dus is het vrij zeker dat deze echt is.
Dan iets verder terug in de tijd naar 7 juli 2010 toen het vliegverkeer op het Chinese vliegveld van Xiaoshan onverwacht werd stil gelegd. Dit naar aanleiding van de bemanning van een vliegtuig dat daar wilde landen die tegen negen uur ’s avonds een object waarnamen en dit meldden aan de verkeersleiding.
Deze handelde onmiddellijk en alle vertrekkende vluchten werden tegengehouden en binnenkomende verwezen naar alternatieve vliegvelden.
Dit duurde alles bij elkaar een uur, maar de reacties waren overweldigend en er brak een levendige discussie los over wat het geweest zou kunnen zijn.
Het was niet alleen de bemanning van een vliegtuig die vreemde objecten waarnam, ook burgers hadden een UFO gefotografeerd.
Ook hier weer sigaarvormige UFO’s die een felle lichtstraal richting aarde sturen, alsof ze willen zien waar ze terechtgekomen zijn.

A new video has appeared of what was claimed to be a cigar-shaped ship hovering over Paris, France, which UFO watchers say is potentially the same object spotted over China and Australia several years ago.
It is unclear if the object -- which the video shows beaming light down on the ground -- is a hoax. The video was posted to YouTube by Secureteam10, a conspiracy channel that often posts UFO sightings.
Tyler Glockner, who runs Secureteam10, said on the video that he was unable to find the original recording of the video and wondererd aloud whether it could be a hoax.

Eerie lights caught hovering above French capital spark comparisons with other sightings

WEIRD footage has emerged that appears to show a strange flashing “UFO” above Paris.
It apparently captures a bizarre cigar-shaped object radiating beams of light – and experts are linking the sighting to others previously seen over China and Australia.

Mystery surrounds what the object is and until an explanation is given it remains an unidentified flying object (UFO).
The footage was posted on YouTube by Secureteam10, a well-known conspiracy channel that posts supposed UFO sightings.
In the video, Tyler Glockner, who runs Secureteam10 explains he was emailed the footage.
But he said the sender did not have much information on it, except that it was recorded near Paris last week.
Mr Glockner said: “I’ve done a bit of digging since I received it and haven’t been able to find a copy of the original video.
“So I don’t know, it could be a full blown hoax.”

Secureteam10 have drawn comparisons between the sighting over Paris and previous sightings in China and Australia.
In 2010, a similar cigar-shaped object was seen near Xiaoshan airport in China that caused the airport to shut down.
Then there was the sighting in the Gold Coast of Australia in early 2014.
Mr Glockner said: “Again we see what looks like a very similar UFO, hovering over the beach, in an eerie display, that truly makes the hairs on my neck stand up.”

Witness report:
On Thursday April 27, 2017 at approximately 7:30 pm in West Kelowna, British Columbia, I was travelling home with my 3 daughters. My 6 year old daughter said “Daddy, what are those flashing lights in the sky?” I was travelling in the southwest direction and I looked up to my left and I noticed several (approximatley 6) flashing lights up in the sky that appeared to flashing and what I would describe as dancing in the sky. At first I wasn’t sure what to make of them. I thought they were some sort of flares or even military aircraft doing some sort of exercise. But since I live in the Okanagan valley and there is no Air Force bases in the area, I knew they were not any of conventional military aircraft. The objects that I was observing were absolutely silent. I quickly pulled off to the side of the road and grabbed my phoned got out of my vehicle to start video recording the lights. Thats when I noticed a second group of (approximatley 4 or 5) that suddenly appeared below the first group. They looked like they were flying closer to Okanagan Lake before the flew upward to join the first group. The two groups formed two separate formations and proceeded to fly eastward towards Kelowna. I had my camera zoomed in and locked on both groups and continued to record them as they were flying away. Or so I thought. After approximately 20-30 seconds of “recording”, I realized that I didn’t actually hit the record button on my phone. I quickly hit the record button and was able to zoom in on the luminous objects as they were flying away. I was able to record the lights, (which were flying in two groups, one approximately 6, the other approximately 4) for about 30 seconds until they essentially were out of sight.
Important points: although it was early evening and the sun was starting to set, there was still plenty of daylight outside. These objects were extremely bright in sky. I am absolutely certain they were neither airplanes of any type or birds. the objects appeared to be well below the clouds when I first noticed them as well as below the tops of the mountains. The second group of lights appeared tore flying lower in the valley near the lake although it did not occur to me at first but what I witnessed I would describe as orange glowing orbs since I did not observe any sort of metallic craft with any visible lines. Only lights the objects that I observed were absolutely silent.

The witness thought of balloons reflecting bright sunlight for a moment, but the UFOs remained at a constant speed, moved with direction and turned relative to each other while maintaining the same distance from each other. The witness also noticed that the mysterious aerial objects seemed to emit a constant light and not reflect it. They explained that balloons would change intensity upon tilting relative to the observer and the sun.
The witness stated that the aircraft did not land at a London airport. They estimated the plane, which had a vapor trail, to be over 15,000-20,000 feet above the ground. Great Britain MUFON is investigating the case, which is filed under Case 82822 in the witness reporting database.

The sight of a flaming ball falling from the sky has made some viewers baffled and frightened. Two videos recorded from two separate places caught an apparent the same sight of what seemed like a massive fireball.
Taken in Louisiana on April 29, the first video shows what looks like a falling object from the sky having a huge trail of smoke behind.
The second video, which then uploaded on the same night, was recorded from neighbouring state of Texas. It also shows a large UFO falling to the ground with a bright reddish colour around it and a huge trail behind.
Both videos show a seemingly burning fire falling out of the sky or a bomb coming down to the Earth’s surface.
Some UFO hunters suggest it could be an unusual weather phenomenon or a downed satellite.
Other commenters joked about the two videos saying they show Superman from Krypton coming down to Earth.
Others described the incident as alarming as it involved an apocalyptic fireball streaking across the sky above the two states in the U.S. As of posting time, no official explanation yet as to what caused such thing to happen. One user commented that how come the thing considered apocalyptic as it never made a big headline moments after both videos circulated online.

An Ohio witness at Sagamore Hills Township reported driving toward an unknown light and discovered a hovering sphere just above the tree line, according to testimony in Case 83449 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness first saw an unusual light in the sky and drove toward it along Chaffee Road in Sagamore Hills Township, Ohio.

The witness was driving home from a gym at 9:30 p.m. on April 30, 2017, when the incident began.
“For some reason, I passed up my street, continued down a main road looking for somewhere to turn around, when a light caught my eye,” the witness stated.“I assumed it was a plane, but upon further inspection I realized it wasn’t.”

The witness continued driving toward the light.
“I parked my car in the middle of a side road where either a saucer or possibly a sphere was hovering above the tree line. It stood hovering for a few minutes, silently may I add, and then darted incredibly quickly(as in hundreds of miles per hour) down the tree line, instantaneously changed direction back to its original location and then shot up into the sky and out of sight.”
The witness was amazed.

“I have tried incredibly hard to think of what else it could have been, but I just can’t disprove what I saw. I then sat in my car, dumbstruck, for minutes until returning home. For those who want to look up a map, the road is called Chaffee Road.”

Count up all the stuff in a galaxy and you should have a pretty good understanding of how much light is being emitted. But that doesn’t seem to be the case for our own Milky Way. Our galaxy’s got a source of extra gamma rays, the highest-energy light, right in its center. And scientists don’t know where all that energy’s coming from.
We’ve known about the gamma ray excess since 2009, and groups using the Fermi Large Area Telescope, the main instrument on a gamma ray telescope orbiting the Earth, continue to spot it. Could the light be coming from dark matter? Aliens? After some modeling, scientists think they’ve got the answer: Pulsars, incredibly dense, rapidly-spinning cores of ancient stars that shoot beams of radiation out like lighthouses. (And, sorry, I’m not talking about fast radio bursts, as cool and mysterious as they may be.)
To figure out what could be causing the eerie gamma glow, the researchers needed a more accurate model of unresolved portions of the galaxy. So, they made a list of 400 objects in the center of the galaxy that could be contributing to the anomaly, then whittled that list down to 66 pulsar candidates. They put this updated data back into their computer simulation, and it seemed to account for the the excess radiation.
“From our findings, there should be this population of pulsars in the galactic bulge around the galactic center,” study author Mattia di Mauro from the from the Kavli Institute for Particle Astrophysics and Cosmology (KIPAC) at Stanford University told Gizmodo. “These should explain the [excess] energy.”

This model might seem to be the most accurate interpretation for the unusual gamma ray light, but there are caveats—for one, the paper was posted on the arXiv server as a preprint, meaning other scientists haven’t had a chance to give input yet. Additionally, said di Mauro, the researchers determined which of their 400 sources were actually pulsars using gamma rays. It’s much easier to determine whether a pulsar is really a pulsar with a radio telescope, though, so the team will make those radio measurements next in order to verify their findings.
As for the other theories, the researchers also tested whether or not the excess could have come from long sought-after dark matter particles, a popular prior theory. Dark matter is the mysterious stuff that seems to account for 80 percent of the measured gravity of the universe—but according to the new model, it wasn’t the source of this mysterious light.
“In our paper... we find that if we use dark matter as an interpretation, the distribution of pulsar-like sources is not consistent with what we have in the real sky.”
One researcher who wasn’t involved with the story found the rejection of dark matter exciting. “We all want dark matter to be there but I like that there’s a systematic and careful analysis, asking if there are more astrophysical sources we weren’t good enough at finding before,” Renée Hlo¸ek, Assistant Professor of Astrophysics at the University of Toronto told Gizmodo. “I don’t think dark matter’s dead, yet but I’m glad astrophysics is being counted on more to explain these anomalies.”
After all, that’s what science is about, she said. “We keep figuring out what dark matter isn’t until we figure out what it is.”

It was a good week for astrobiology. Within days of NASA’s announcement that the necessary ingredients for life likely exist in the Saturn moon Enceladus' subsurface ocean, scientists gathered at Stanford University to discuss discovering life outside the solar system.
Noting how "the search for life in the universe has been transformed from speculation to a data-driven science," speakers like Stanford physicist Peter Michelson offered detailed plans for finding life on exoplanets.
Over the course of two days on April 20-21, dozens of scientists attending the Breakthrough Discuss conference contemplated options for exploring planets in other star systems. These options include using a new generation of powerful telescopes for long-distance observations, as well as advancing a first-of-its-kind technology to visit other star systems — all within the next generation. What these strategies have in common is a focus on observing habitable-zone planets in our local stellar neighborhood. In this neighborhood alone, within 30 light-years or so of our solar system, astrobiologists have already identified several potentially Earth-like exoplanets and dozens of systems that may harbor Earth-like worlds.
These exoplanets, identified by the effects they have on their parent star, are rocky and roughly the same size and density as Earth. They orbit their stars at a distance that would allow liquid water to exist on the surface, given the right atmospheric conditions. There is, however, at least one major difference between our planet and these potentially-habitable exoplanets: They aren't circling stars like our sun.
The diagram shows how new technology developed at Caltech will help astronomers search for molecular bio-signatures on exoplanets. Coronagraphs block a star's light, making orbiting planets easier to see. High-resolution spectrometers would help further isolate a planet's light, and could reveal molecules in the planet's atmosphere.

On the spectrum of stars, our sun is what's known as a yellow dwarf. It's bright, and not terribly large compared to the largest stars in our galaxy. Yet, even middling stars like our sun aren't all that common. Our local stellar neighborhood — and probably the universe as a whole — is filled with many more low-mass stars. There are 20 yellow dwarf stars like our sun nearby and 250 M-dwarfs, a variety of star so small and dim that, despite their abundance, they can't be seen with the naked eye. Over the last three to four years, every single low-mass star we've studied appears to have at least one planet. Usually, they have more than one.
"How common are planets orbiting low-mass stars? Very common indeed," Courtney Dressing, an astronomer at the University of California, Berkeley, said during a presentation at the conference. "For a typical M-dwarf, there tends to be 2.5 planets. One in four of the stars has a planet the same size and temperature as Earth in the habitable zone."
Dressing's point was that, given the number of M-dwarfs in the local region, there should be at least 60 potentially Earth-like planets in habitable zones within 32 or so light-years from here, and perhaps many more. To date, most of our exoplanet data comes from NASA's Kepler spacecraft, which has focused its search for planets on large M-dwarf stars. In the near future, when the small and medium-sized M-dwarfs are studied, we may discover that closer to one in three stars have an Earth-like planet in the habitable zone.
Apart from their abundance, these low-mass stars offer other advantages to researchers who study potentially habitable exoplanets. M-dwarf planets have tight orbits around their stars because the habitable zones are close in, giving scientists opportunities to view their transits every few weeks. It is during these transits, when the exoplanets pass in front of their stars, that we have the best opportunity to study their atmospheres for signs of life. [5 Bold Claims of Alien Life]

Many conference attendees, including Mercedes López-Morales from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics, explained how we will be surveying the atmospheres of the closest habitable-zone planets for signs of life dwelling on the surface or in an ocean. "We're going to look for oxygen," she said.
Because the rise of oxygen in Earth's atmosphere corresponded with the appearance of life, we frequently use that particular molecule as a marker for the presence of life elsewhere. Also, oxygen likes to interact with other chemicals. If we discover a planet where oxygen is still hanging around in the atmosphere, something, possibly life, is actively making it. So, the search for life will focus on elements and molecules like hydrogen, oxygen, and methane. However, as López-Morales explained, there is a downside to this approach.
"A planet's atmosphere is only 1 percent the size of the planet," she said. "The size of the signal is tiny. You need to collect at least one trillion photons to be very certain that you are truly looking at oxygen."
The good news is that a new generation of telescopes designed for planetary exploration and astrobiology will soon be coming online to help us gather those photons. Around this time next year, NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will be getting ready for launch. During its two-year mission, TESS will survey 200,000 stars, including the brighter ones in our local systems.
The Giant Magellan Telescope (GMT) in Chile, slated to be operational by 2022, will have a resolving power 10 times greater than NASA's famous Hubble Space Telescope. The GMT will feature a device called the G-CLEF spectrograph, which will be able to see molecules like oxygen in far-off planetary atmospheres. Finally, when the ground-based European Extremely Large Telescope (E-ELT) opens in 2024, it will have more light-gathering-power than all of Earth's current 8- to 10-meter telescopes combined. Astrobiologists are counting on these large telescopes coming online between now and 2024 to identify the prime candidates to look for oxygen and life in our stellar neighborhood.
Even as we anticipate a treasure trove of atmospheric data from these missions, scientists are discovering species that live quite happily without oxygen, light, and other features that we used to believe were required for life. These discoveries highlight how atmospheric biosignatures like oxygen are an imperfect, if tantalizing, way to look for life from afar. The question then becomes: Could there be there another way to look for extraterrestrial life beyond studying exoplanet atmospheres?
Ideally, to definitively identify life on other worlds, we would visit nearby planets like Proxima b, only 4 light-years away, either in person or with a spacecraft. This is the goal of the Breakthrough Starshot initiative. Announced a little more than a year ago, Starshot’s goal, according to its founder, is to "literally reach the stars in our lifetimes." The plan to accomplish this feat involves launching a fleet of very small spacecraft. Starshot will then accelerate these craft to about 20 percent the speed of light using powerful ground-based lasers. This strategy should allow scientists and engineers to slash the time, cost, and weight required to gain an up-close look at planets around other stars, project representatives have said.
"The goal is to fly a probe very close to a planet and figure out if it has life," said theorist Avi Loeb, chair of Harvard University's astronomy department. "What is the color of the planet? Is it green? Does it have vegetation? Is it blue, are there oceans? Or is it desert-like?" [Laser-Sailing to Exoplanets: Images of the Breakthrough Starshot Concept]
At the conference, NASA engineer Ruslan Belikov premiered simulations of what an exoplanet might look like from Starshot's point of view. Even if the craft were moving at 90 percent the speed of light, the onboard cameras should still be able to pick up signs of large oceans, clouds and land masses that an exoplanet might have, Belikov said.
The hope is that, someday, by combining laser acceleration of these very small craft with cameras and other sensors, we might finally be able to take a firsthand look at habitable-zone planets circling nearby stars, and, in so doing, perhaps definitively find life elsewhere in the universe. Combining data from our new generation of very large telescopes with atmospheric observations of nearby exoplanets around M-dwarfs may help us choose the best targets for small Starshot craft to fly by.
"We are going to be the generation that is remembered for finding exoplanets. That's a fact," López-Morales said. "Are we going to be also the generation that will be remembered as the first ones who found life on those planets?"
That, indeed, would be the breakthrough of a lifetime.
Stephen Hawking adjusted his doomsday timer for Earth, slashing 900 years from his initial 1,000-year estimate. According to the famous physicist, humanity has a century left to evacuate the planet and become multi-planetary species.
ESCAPING EARTH
Over the past century or so, humanity has accomplished a great deal of innovation. We learned to fly (at least with the help of airplanes), built huge machines, cured diseases, and developed computers, the Internet, and smart devices. At the same time, we’ve caused our fair share of destruction, too: in the form of several wars — two of which were world wars — and, of interest as of late, man-made climate change. Now, renowned physicist Stephen Hawking thinks we have 100 years left before doomsday — and we need to get off Earth long before that comes to pass.
This isn’t the first time Hawking has given a doomsday prediction. In recent years, he’s warned about how super artificial intelligence (AI) would end humankind and how contacting extraterrestrial life would go bonkers for humanity. Then in November of last year, he said we have 1,000 years to leave Earth. Now, he’s cut it down to 100 — leaving us to wonder just how bad the past six months have been. They’d arguably have to have been pretty bad for Hawking to drastically cut our time on Earth by 900 years in one fell swoop.
The details of Hawking’s latest doomsday warning will be featured in a new BBC documentary airing on June 15 called Expedition New Earth, where he suggests that humanity needs to be a multi-planetary species within the next century in order to survive.

Hawking explains that humankind’s days on Earth are already numbered because of climate change, asteroid strikes, epidemics, and overpopulation. The only way to survive? We need to change planets, and fast. A lot could happen in 100 years, and we’ve proven that we’re capable of discovering and developing many things within a century. But could we really go multi-planetary in that timeframe?
