Numerous pro-UFO books have been written on that certain, controversial incident which occurred on the Foster Ranch, New Mexico in early July 1947. It has become far better known as the Roswell UFO crash. Those aforementioned books include Roswell in the 21st Century by Kevin Randle, The Children of Roswell by Tom Carey and Don Schmitt, The Roswell Incident by Charles Berlitz and William Moore, and The UFO Crash at Roswell by Kevin Randle and Don Schmitt.
As for the U.S. Air Force, it has now published two reports on Roswell – one in 1994 and the other in 1997. Neither report endorses the alien angle. The conclusion of the USAF, today, is that the Roswell wreckage came not from a weather-balloon, as was claimed back in July 1947, but from a huge “Mogul” balloon-array utilized to secretly monitor for Soviet atomic bomb tests in the latter part of the 1940s. As for the reports of alien bodies found at the crash site, it is the Air Force’s opinion that they were crash-test-dummies used in high-altitude parachute experiments. There is, however, another theory for what happened outside of Roswell in early July 1947. In some ways, it’s a theory that is more controversial than the idea that aliens crashed and died on the ranch.
Mogul weather balloons
In June 2005, Simon & Schuster published one of the most controversial books I have written. Its title: Body Snatchers in the Desert: The Horrible Truth at the Heart of the Roswell Story. It’s a book which suggested that what crashed outside of Roswell, New Mexico in early July 1947 was not an alien spacecraft, after all. Instead, it was one of a handful of definitively terrestrial vehicles which were secretly test-flown in various parts of New Mexico. And, all over the course of several, specific months in the year in which (a) the flying saucer was born, (b) the CIA was created, and (c) the passing of the National Security Act went ahead. We’re talking about 1947.
All of the flights ended in disaster, and particularly so for the people on-board. This was something which ensured that the tales, revelations and rumors of more than a few “crashed flying saucers and dead aliens,” in the Land of Enchantment, and in the late-1940s, became intertwined and confused. To the extent that they are now popularly recognized under one banner, that of the “the Roswell incident.”
The overwhelming secrecy surrounding the flights was due to the fact that certain controversy-filled pacts had secretly been put into place. They were designed to allow a large number of Axis scientists to avoid prosecution for their Second World War-era war-crimes. Instead, those scientists secretly went to work in New Mexico – and that included working on the craft that crashed to earth outside of Roswell, New Mexico and which led to the infamous legend of the UFO crash. Some of those craft were piloted. Others had human guinea pigs on board. They were strapped into gondolas and lifted high into the sky by huge balloon arrays, chiefly to further expand the scope of controversial work in the field of high-altitude exposure and early rocketry.
In other words, had the truth of Roswell surfaced back then, the floodgates would almost certainly have opened wide, and a controversial treaty – with Axis scientists who had no qualms at all about using innocent people in nightmarish experiments – would have reared its ugly head. No one in officialdom wanted that to happen, so it was a case of burying the dark and disturbing truth of the diabolical human experimentation among a mass of tales of aliens from other worlds and flying saucers. Destroy all of the records. Deny everything that needs denying. Silence those who know too much. Create as many false leads as possible. Couldn’t be done? As I write these words in April 2017, I can say with confidence that that approach has worked all too well for the last seventy years.
Despite the words of the naysayers, and those who hope and pray I am wrong, the fact is there exists a large body of material that strongly supports the “secret experiment” theory. Such was the controversial and incriminating nature of the files and the experiments, they were buried decades ago – and they remain buried. Or, maybe, as I have suggested, all of that same incriminating data has been relegated to the furnace and the shredder. But, that doesn’t prevent a case from being made.
Although pro-UFO researchers and investigators make a big fuss about the discoveries on the Foster Ranch, they seldom highlight the fact that, prior to the events of early July 1947, rancher Mack Brazel found the remains of two weather balloons on the property. That is an important thing to note, as is this: there is no doubt that much of the material scooped up by Brazel was very balloon-like. And, we know that balloons had fallen on the ranch previously. Military balloons. Twice. If that doesn’t strike you as being notable, well, it sure as hell should.
In light of all this, few can deny that military devices – of varying degrees of secrecy – were dropping from the skies over New Mexico, in the late 1940s. Let’s see what else is on the table.
Also in 1947, we have the following, found in FBI files declassified under the terms of the Freedom of Information Act: “Special Agent S. W. Reynolds of the Liaison Section, while discussing the above captioned phenomena with Lieutenant Colonel Garrett of the Air Forces Intelligence, expressed the possibility that flying discs were, in fact, a very highly classified experiment of the Army or Navy [italics mine]. Mr. Reynolds was very much surprised when Colonel Garrett not only agreed that this was a possibility, but confidentially stated it was his personal opinion that such was a probability. Colonel Garrett indicated that a Mr. [name deleted], who is a scientist attached to the Air Forces Intelligence, was of the same opinion.”
For a number of years, a wide variety of reports that involve alleged “mystery aircraft” have continued to surface. While bearing certain characteristics that distinguish them from typical military aircraft, the aircraft in these reports are a cut above your typical “flying saucer” or UFO type object reports.
First, let’s recall the aircraft that were observed, and even photographed over Wichita Kansas, as well as the Texas Panhandle, back in the middle of 2014. Described as a “flying Dorito”, the flying wing aircraft were photographed on a few different occasions, leading to theories about a possible classified manned penetrating reconnaissance aircraft being utilized by the USAF or some other military body.
However, while the talk of various spy planes remains the dominant theme in the midst of all this, there are occasionally reports that surface which bear more unusual characteristics, at least in relation to the kinds of aircraft and recognized technologies involved.
Could this be a top-secret US spy plane?
I received a report on April 6, 2017, describing a possible sighting of such an aircraft, which was seen over Kansas City, as described by the witness below:
I stepped out around midday to get a coffee for a pick-me-up and was able to see a B-2 bomber flying around the area. At one point it appeared to have stopped in the air for a moment and then shoot off quickly toward the horizon. In your efforts to find a prosaic explanation regarding black triangles, seeing the B-2 appear to stop in the air and then take off quickly immediately reminded me about the various reports of the black triangle sightings. Perhaps what is being seen by people who report about black triangles are really updated versions of the B-2. I could see the bomber clearly because it was a beautiful day and the plane was on a blue sky background. It was incredible to see the bomber as clearly as I did and was unable to get any pictures. But imagining the idea of a newer, more capable, version of a B-2 (perhaps a B-3) with the ability to hover does not seem impossible in my mind and is a very plausible explanation for some of the black triangle sightings.
Barring any optical illusions that might have caused the B-2 observed by this witness to appear as though it had been hovering, it is intriguing to suppose that there might be, as the witness suggests, “updated” versions of certain aircraft that possess sophisticated features. Indeed, could such an aircraft (or an updated version of an existing one) account for certain reports of unidentified triangle-shaped objects, especially those observed at night, and under less-than-optimal visual conditions?
As far back as the early 1990s, there has been speculation about a number of supposedly classified aircraft. Almost without question, the most famous of these has been the Aurora, alleged to be a successor to the SR-71, which remained in service until 1998.
Throughout the 1990s, the Federation of American Scientists had also been featuring a number of updates on sightings of mystery aircraft in their Secrecy and Government Bulletin, overseen by Steven Aftergood. In the January, 1993 edition of the bulletin, an interesting report appeared that discussed the legitimacy of such sightings:
The evidence supporting the existence of something like Aurora, a classified follow-on to the SR- 71 “Blackbird,” is surprisingly diverse, though hardly conclusive. At the same time, the evidence against its existence, derived from budget data, official pronouncements, and related policy decisions can not easily be dismissed. (This evidence is compiled and evaluated in an updated, August 1992 version of the FAS report “Mystery Aircraft.”) Most recently, Air Force Secretary Donald B. Rice insisted vigorously that no such secret program exists within the Air Force or anywhere else (Washington Post, 12/27/92, p. C6).
If it were true, as reported, that a classified hypersonic aircraft is in operational service, the deepest significance of this fact would not be the existence of the aircraft, but rather the magnitude and audacity of the deception that had been perpetrated to conceal it.
Whether or not the descriptions collected throughout the 90s by the FAS represent a legitimate classified aircraft which has never been revealed on the public level is still a matter of debate. With continuing reports of aircraft today that resemble known varieties, though possessing “enhanced” capabilities such as hovering and other unusual flight behavior, it is hard to rule out the possibility that there could be more in our skies than most are aware of… and that such aircraft, and their unique technological applications, may also have existed far longer than many would expect.

The Travis Walton abduction is perhaps one of the most famous UFO cases of all. Travis was part of a logging crew on November 5, 197, in the Apache-Sitgreaves National Forest. The abduction site is in the east central Arizona mountains and is accessed only by old logging roads. After calling it a day, and with the sun going down, the crew of seven got in the truck to head home.
As they traveled down the road, a UFO was spotted hovering off to the side. Travis got out, approached it, and was hit by a beam. The crew panicked and drove off, but quickly returned to find Travis missing. He was gone five days.
Now, a scientific analysis of the terrain where the incident occurred has produced surprising results.

Curiously, it is one of the most famous cases of alien abductions, and in addition, it’s one of few cases of alien abductions with corroborative eyewitnesses that could not be denied. Walton could not be found but reappeared after five days of intensive searches.
According to the story, the night Walton was abducted, six crew members including Walton (Mike Rogers, Ken Peterson, John Goulette, Steve Pierce, Allen Dallis and Dwayne Smith) were driving back to their homes after an arduous day of work.
On the way, they encountered an intense luminosity that they believed was a fire, but as they approached they saw that it was a saucer-shaped object floating off the ground some 30 meters. What followed became one of the most important and interesting UFO cases in the history of our planet.
Interestingly last week, Frontier Analysis Limited analyzed samples of the ground where the abduction allegedly took place.
The results obtained shed some light on the event and prove that something strange definitely happened that night of 1975.
Signed by the chemist Phyllis A. Budinger, the report (Click here) provides details on the composition of the soilwhere the UFO was located according to Walton.
As noted by the report, “though the event happened 40 years ago, soil samples were collected from the site, along with nearby control samples. It should be noted that besides 40 years of weathering, a massive forest fire occurred in 2002 which devastated the area. Still, it was hoped that if a permanent change was made to the soil due to the UFO’s proximity, it would be detected.”
Several soil samples were taken from the site where Walton was abducted, as well as other control samples taken from the surrounding area. According to the scientists, the differences between the two samples were not many, although, to their surprise, they found two interesting anomalies that caught their attention.
Research revealed that compared to the surrounding terrain, samples from the abduction site have a higher level of iron particles. Exchangeable cations (calcium, magnesium, potassium) are also significantly higher. This suggests some kind of chemical change occurred in the ground where the alleged alien UFO was spotted.
Even though the report indicates that there may be a natural explanation for cationic activity, such as clay deposits that generate chemical changes, the large amount of iron is definitely out of the norm wrote experts.
According to the scientific study: “It is revealed that iron-containing particulates amounts are higher in the site soils compared to the control soils. Furthermore, there is indication that the levels tend to be higher in the surface soils compared to the sub-surface soils of the site samples. This laboratory speculates that the hovering craft propulsion system has a powerful electromagnetic effect thereby drawing (and concentrating) these iron particulates toward the surface. This has been observed in the analysis of soils from other sites where UFOs landed or hovered close to the ground.1 It was more specifically noted that sample 2 contains fewer particlulates compared to the other site samples, but slightly more than the controls. Soil 2 is approximately where Travis landed after the beam hit him. Perhaps this suggests that the UFO was not influencing the metal content as much at this location.”
As the name implies, the current mission is the fourth for the X-37B program. These orbital jaunts have been getting progressively longer: OTV-1 launched in April 2010 and spent 224 days in space, OTV-2 lifted off in March 2011 and orbited Earth for 468 days, and OTV-3 began in December 2012 and operated for nearly 675 days. Most X-37B payloads and activities are classified, so it's unclear what exactly the space planes are doing as they zoom around our planet. But there's nothing nefarious going on, Air Force officials have stressed.
"The primary objectives of the X-37B are twofold: reusable spacecraft technologies for America's future in space and operating experiments which can be returned to, and examined, on Earth," Air Force officials wrote on an X-37B fact sheet.

Interestingly, that same fact sheet states that the X-37B is designed to operate for 270 days in orbit — a duration mark that the most recent three missions have blown past.
The Air Force is known to own two X-37B vehicles, both of which were built by Boeing. Each solar-powered space plane is just 29 feet (8.8 meters) long and 9.6 feet (2.9 m) tall, with a payload bay the size of a pickup truck bed. (For comparison, both X-37Bs could fit inside the payload bay of one of NASA's now-retired space shuttle orbiters.) Each of the two X-37Bs has flown two missions to date.
The X-37B launches vertically atop a rocket and comes in horizontally for a runway landing. All four missions have launched from Cape Canaveral, and the first three landed at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California.
But OTV-4 may buck this latter trend and land in Florida. The Air Force has modified the old Shuttle Landing Facility (SLF) at NASA's Kennedy Space Center, which is next door to Cape Canaveral, to accommodate the X-37B. And Air Force officials have said that they aim to consolidate the program's launch and landing activities on Florida's Space Coast.
The SLF last hosted a touchdown in July 2011, when the space shuttle Atlantis landed there to wrap up its STS-135 mission — the final one for the iconic shuttle program.

The asteroid 2014 JO25 will fly safely past Earth April 19, coming within 1.1 million miles (1.8 million km) of the planet — about 4.6 times the distance between the Earth and the moon. This map shows the asteroid's locations as it passes through the sky April 19 to April 22 — it will appear bright in the sky for small telescopes for a few days after closest approach. Its position will vary from location to location.
A huge, shiny, peanut-shaped asteroid will safely swing by Earth tomorrow morning (April 19), coming within a distance of 1.1 million miles (1.8 million kilometers) of the planet — about 4.6 times the distance from Earth to the moon.
Asteroid 2014 JO25 was first spotted in May 2014 by astronomers at the Catalina Sky Survey in Arizona, and measurements from NASA's NEOWISE mission suggested it was about 2,000 feet (650 meters) across, according to NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL). Radar observations from the Arecibo Observatory in Puerto Rico suggest it could be as big as 4,270 feet (1.3 km) at its widest point.
The asteroid's surface reflects about twice as much light as the moon. Its approach marks the closest an object this large has come to Earth since the gigantic asteroid 4179 Toutatis tumbled by in 2004, within 4 times the distance from the Earth to the moon.

Although the asteroid's approach poses no risk to Earth — with a 0 percent impact probability — the International Astronomical Union's Minor Planet Center still classified it as "potentially hazardous" because of its size and nearness to Earth. Researchers will have to keep an eye on it to see if it drifts closer over the centuries, the Minor Planet Center wrote.
Astronomers around the world will study asteroid 2014 JO25 during and after its approach, including skywatchers at Arecibo and NASA's Goldstone Solar System Radar in California, JPL officials said in the statement — making observations that can potentially reveal features just a few meters across.
"Using radar, we can illuminate a near-Earth asteroid and directly measure its features,"astronomer Edgard Rivera-Valentín, a planetary scientist with the Universities Space Research Association (USRA) at the Arecibo Observatory, said in a separate statement. That's how scientists pinned down the asteroid's peanut shape, he added.
The next close approach of a known giant asteroid will happen in 2027, when the half-mile-wide (800 m) asteroid 1999 AN10 passes by at about the distance from the Earth to the moon.
You can watch asteroid 2014 JO25's journey live on the Slooh online observatory's website starting at 7 p.m. EDT (2300 GMT) April 19. You can also seek it out in the sky using the celestial map above and a small telescope (although its position will vary, depending on your location).
While you're looking, keep an eye out for the comet PanSTARRS (C/2015 ER61), which will be visible in the dawn sky to observers with binoculars or a small telescope as it makes its closest approach of 109 million miles (175 million km).

Scientists have located an exoplanet that's the best candidate for life as we know it. They believe it may prove to be an even more important target for the future characterization of planets in the habitable zone than Proxima b or TRAPPIST-1.

Only a few decades ago, the thought of any alien planets existing in the reaches of space were just hypothetical ideas. Now, we know of thousands of such planets – and today, scientists may have discovered the best candidate yet for alien life.
That candidate is an exoplanet orbiting a red dwarf star 40 light-years from Earth—what the international team of astronomers who discovered it have deemed a “super-Earth.” Using ESO’s HARPS instrument and a range of telescopes around the world, the astronomers located the exoplanet orbiting the dim star – LHS 1140 – within its habitable zone. This world passes in front of its parent stars as it orbits, has likely retained most of its atmosphere, and is a little larger and much more massive than the Earth. In short, super-Earth LHS 1140b is among the most exciting known subjects for atmospheric studies.
Although the faint red dwarf star LHS 1140b is ten times closer to its star than the Earth is to the Sun, because red dwarfs are much smaller and cooler than the Sun is, the super-Earth lies in the middle of the habitable zone and receives around half as much sunlight from its star as the Earth does.
“This is the most exciting exoplanet I’ve seen in the past decade,” lead author Jason Dittmann of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics said in an ESO science release. “We could hardly hope for a better target to perform one of the biggest quests in science — searching for evidence of life beyond Earth.”

LIFE AS WE KNOW IT
To support life as we know it, a planet must retain an atmosphere and have liquid surface water. When red dwarf stars are young, they emit radiation that can damage the atmospheres of planets around them. This planet’s large size indicates that a magma ocean may have existed on its surface for eons, feeding steam into the atmosphere and replenishing the planet with water until well within the time the star had cooled to its current, steady glow. The astronomers estimate the planet is at least five billion years old, and deduce that it has a diameter of almost 18,000 kilometers (11,185 mi)— 1.4 times larger than that of the Earth. Its greater mass and density implies that it is probably made of rock with a dense iron core.
Two of the European members of the team, Xavier Delfosse and Xavier Bonfils, stated in the release: “The LHS 1140 system might prove to be an even more important target for the future characterization of planets in the habitable zone than Proxima b or TRAPPIST-1. This has been a remarkable year for exoplanet discoveries!”
Scientists expect observations with the Hubble Space Telescope will soon allow them to assess how much high-energy radiation the exoplanet receives, and further into the future — with the help of new telescopes like ESO’s Extremely Large Telescope and the James Webb Telescope — detailed observations of the atmospheres of exoplanets will be possible.

As NASA's Cassini spacecraft prepares for its grand finale at Saturn, scientists have uncovered the first evidence of a potential energy source for extraterrestrial microbial life.
The detection of hydrogen inside an ice plume jetting off from Saturn's ocean-bearing moon Enceladus means that hot water is interacting with rock, creating a potential chemical kitchen for microbial life that doesn't rely on photosynthesis to survive.
On Earth, these types of microbes flourish around hydrothermal vents on the sea floor. Scientists wonder if the same might be true 790 million miles away on Enceladus, an ice-capped inner moon of Saturn's that is just 500 miles in diameter.
"The fact that there is molecular hydrogen there — and a lot of it — can be interpreted in two different ways with regard to life," Cassini scientist Hunter Waite, with the Southwest Research Institute in San Antonio, Texas, told Seeker. "One is that there is so much hydrogen because there are no microbes there to eat it... The more positive way is that there is H2 there, there is plenty of food for them, but there's probably some other limiting growth factor so that there is excess H2 in the system."
"If you saw this [hydrogen detection] coming up from Earth, you'd say, 'Ah, there's potential food for microbes in the interior ocean.' But you wouldn't say necessarily that there are these microbes in the ocean," he added. "There is every reason to believe we're moving toward Enceladus's ocean being habitable, but we're not making any claims at this point about it being inhabited."
The discovery of molecular hydrogen in Enceladus's plumes was reported by Waite and his colleagues in this week's issue of the journal Science.

Cassini, which has been circling Saturn and its entourage of moons since 2004, will end its mission in September with a suicidal plunge into Saturn's atmosphere to avoid any chance of contaminating potential life on Enceladus. But even if Cassini could carry on for years, it was not designed to search for life.
"We've come as far as we can go, so it remains for a future mission to detect life at Enceladus," Cassini project scientist Linda Spilker, with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, Calif., told reporters on Thursday.
Ideally, scientists would like to drill through Enceladus's ice cap and sample its underground ocean. An easier, lower-cost mission, however, would be to do what Cassini did, which is to fly through the plumes of material that continuously shoot out into space from the moon's southern polar region.
Besides measuring the ratio of hydrogen to carbon dioxide, which Cassini was able to do, there are several different chemical relationships that would be evidence of potential food sources for microbial life. A laundry list of those processes would be one of the things that a follow-on mission would look for, Waite noted.
Other options are to look for ratios of amino acids and structural patterns in fatty acids that are indicative of biology.
"There'd be a whole host of tests, and if you got green lights on all of them, then you'd have a pretty good idea that you had a high probability that life exists," Waite said.
In the 2020s, NASA is planning to launch a spacecraft to Jupiter's moon Europa, which, like Enceladus, has a salty ocean beneath its icy surface. The US space agency has not yet planned any follow-on missions for Enceladus, but it could be selected as the destination for a current or future round of planetary missions in the New Frontiers program. Proposals are due April 28.

If you want to terraform a planet, you can do so virtually in a new video game called "Mass Effect: Andromeda." The main character voyages to planets that are uninhabitable to life as we know it for various reasons, including sulfuric water, immense cold, or a thin atmosphere. It's then your task as a player to fix up these planets, in part by using alien technology.
Could we terraform a planet for real, though?
For decades, one of the top targets for terraforming was Mars. It's relatively close to Earth and we have reams of research showing that water flowed there in the ancient past. Perhaps the Red Planet, if it was warm enough, could host life as we know it again — although there is the ethical problem of potentially wiping out evidence of past life, or viability for present life.
NASA has deployed a spacecraft called Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) to watch the atmosphere from above and try to figure out the rate of gas loss. Scientists think that Mars had a thick carbon dioxide (CO2) atmosphere early in its history that allowed liquid water to exist, but most of the atmosphere was lost to space. When the atmosphere thinned, so the theory goes, water could no longer flow on the surface.
"The rate of loss of gas today is very low — slow enough that it would take billions of years to remove the equivalent amount of gas that is in the atmosphere," principal investigator Bruce Jakosky said in an email. There is some CO2 left in the polar ice and in carbon-bearing materials, he added, but not nearly enough to warm the temperature significantly if it somehow was put back in the atmosphere.
"There isn’t a source of CO2 that could replenish the atmosphere — even outgassing of CO2 from volcanoes has got to be incredibly slow today," Jakosky added. "If we wanted to put enough CO2 into the atmosphere to raise temperatures significantly, it would take something like 10 million kilometer-sized comets (if they were all made entirely of CO2). This is just not feasible."
MAVEN revealed new information about how much CO2 was lost, by looking at isotopes of argon-36 and argon-38. Unlike CO2, argon is removed by only one process: sputtering, which occurs when charged particles (ions) in space are picked up the solar wind because they have an electrical charge. Some ions accelerate into the Martian atmosphere and knock molecules into space, including argon and CO2.
The new analysis indicates that about 2/3 of the argon that was ever in the Martian atmosphere was lost to space through sputtering. Because CO2 can be lost through other processes, the investigators concluded that a larger fraction of the CO2 was removed.
"In total, this means that the majority of gas in the atmosphere has been lost to space," Jakosky said.
He added that terraforming is often seen as a panacea for humans; if we somehow mess up our own climate on Earth, we can always just try again on Mars.
"But that ignores the obvious point that, if we knew enough about climate to control the Mars climate, we also could control the Earth’s climate and either keep from mucking it up in the first place, or repair it after we’ve damaged it," Jakosky said.
Astronomers have found yet another planet that seems to have just the right Goldilocks combination for life: Not so hot and not so cold. It's not so far away, either.
This new, big, dense planet is rocky, like Earth, and has the right temperatures for water, putting it in the habitable zone for life, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature .
It's the fifth such life-possible planet outside our solar system revealed in less than a year, but still relatively nearby Earth. Rocky planets within that habitable zone of a star are considered the best place to find evidence of some form of life.
"It is astonishing to live in a time when discovery of potentially habitable worlds is not only common place but proliferating," said MIT astronomer Sara Seager, who wasn't part of the study.
The first planet outside our solar system was discovered in 1995, but thanks to new techniques and especially NASA's planet-hunting Kepler telescope, the number of them has exploded in recent years. Astronomers have now identified 52 potentially habitable planets and more than 3,600 planets outside our solar system.
The latest discovery, called LHS 1140b, regularly passes in front of its star, allowing astronomers to measure its size and mass. That makes astronomers more confident that this one is rocky, compared to other recent discoveries.
In the next several years, new telescopes should be able to use the planet's path to spy its atmosphere in what could be the best-aimed search for signs of life, said Harvard astronomer David Charbonneau, a co-author of the study. If scientists see both oxygen and some carbon in an atmosphere, that's a promising sign that something could be living.
Outside astronomers have already put this new planet near the top of their must-see lists for new ground and space-based telescopes.
"This is the first one where we actually know it's rocky," Charbonneau said. "We found a planet that we can actually study that might be actually Earth-like."
Make that super-sized, because it belongs to a class of planets called super-Earths that are more massive than Earth but not quite the size of giants Neptune or Jupiter.
Compared to Earth, the new planet is big, pushing near the size limit for rocky planets. It's 40 percent wider than Earth but it has 6.6 times Earth's mass, giving it a gravitational pull three times stronger, Charbonneau said. A person weighing 167 pounds would feel like 500 pounds on this planet.
While many super-Earths are too big to have the right environment for life, 1140b is just small enough to make it a good candidate. Thirty-two of the potentially habitable planets found so far are considered super-Earth sized.
The new planet was found using eight small telescopes in Chile and help from an amateur planet-hunter, Charbonneau said.
In the constellation Cetus, it is 39 light years or 230 trillion miles away. So are a group of seven mostly Earth-sized planets in or near the habitable zone found circling a star called Trappist-1 earlier this year, but it in a different direction. And in August, astronomers found that the nearest planet to Earth outside our solar system, only 25 trillion miles away, also could have the right temperature for life, but astronomers can't get a peek at its atmosphere.
"If you picture the Milky Way as the size of the United States, then these systems are all within the size of Central Park," Charbonneau said. "These are your neighbors."
The latest discoveries have their founders at odds over which of the planets are the most promising. Charbonneau said recent studies show that the Trappist planets may not be rocky like Earth, while Trappist discoverer Michael Gillon said the newest planet has such intense grav ity that its atmosphere may be smooshed down so telescopes can't get a good look at it.
Seven outside astronomers said the Milky Way is big enough for all the discoveries to be exciting, requiring more exploring.
Yale astronomer Greg Laughlin, who wasn't part of any of the teams, praised all the new findings but said the Trappist planets seem too light and the new one too dense for his taste: "I wouldn't book a trip to any of these planets."

There’s another “Earth-like” world in our galaxy. Today, Jason Dittmann at the Harvard Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics and his colleagues announced the discovery of LHS 1140b, a rocky, temperate super-Earth orbiting a small nearby star.
Most of the worlds we have spotted so far are either blazing hellscapes or frozen tundras. But a few, like LHS 1140b, reside in the habitable zones around their stars – where they could theoretically retain liquid water – giving them the potential to host life as we know it.
Some potentially habitable planets are easier to examine than others, however. Some pass in front of their stars – called a transit – allowing us to measure their widths. This also lets us find out if they have an atmosphere, and even what makes up their atmospheres, by measuring the starlight that filters through them. Some are close enough to dream about sending a probe directly, or taking a photograph. Some seem to be too dense to have much of an atmosphere at all, or orbit stars whose volatile natures put any residents at risk of being fried.
With those criteria in mind, here are New Scientist’s five top planets beyond our solar system where we might be able to look for life:
1. LHS 1140b
This newcomer, pictured above, is already being hailed as the best place to look for signs of life beyond the solar system. It is a super-Earth, about 1.4 times as big as our planet and 6.6 times as massive, which means the planet is probably rocky, rather than gaseous.
Despite a close orbit around its star – it circles once every 25 days – the star’s cool nature means it receives about half as much light as Earth does, so is probably cool enough for liquid water. The star is a dim red dwarf, which are often prone to flares that could damage life on nearby planets. But LHS 1140 is unusually calm, so its planet is less at risk.
At 40 light years away, LHS 1140b is one of the closer potentially habitable exoplanets we have found. Since it is so close and passes between its star and us, it presents an excellent opportunity to look for an atmosphere distorting the star’s light as the planet passes by – and to suss out signs of life in that atmosphere.
2. Proxima b

Proxima b is the nearest rocky exoplanet we have spotted, at only 4.2 light years from Earth. Its size hasn’t been pinned down, but it is almost definitely just a bit bigger than Earth.
It orbits its star, Proxima Centauri, about once every 11 days, putting it incredibly close. Even though Proxima Centauri is a relatively chilly star, explaining Proxima b’s habitable-zone status, such a tight orbit presents dangers to the exoplanet. It experiences a huge amount of X-ray radiation and stellar wind, and it might even be tidally locked, with the “daytime” side always facing the star – making it hot and bright – and the “nighttime” side always pointing towards the emptiness of space, making it cold and dark.
Another mark against Proxima b is the fact that it doesn’t transit in front of its star, so we will never be able to use its effect on the star’s light to look for an atmosphere. But if it does have an atmosphere, it could protect the planet from many of its star’s dangers and distribute heat more evenly around the surface.
The upside is that, cosmologically speaking, Proxima b is right next door. This could let us look for an atmosphere and signs of life there in other, more direct ways.
3. GJ 1132b

We have already found an atmosphere, complete with water, around GJ 1132b, a planet about one and a half times as big as Earth. It only takes 38 hours to orbit its star, though, so it is extremely close and incredibly hot. This could make GJ 1132b more like Venus than Earth, with a sweltering haze of steam.
It does transit, so further observations will help researchers determine whether its atmosphere and water can make it cool enough to support life.
4. TRAPPIST

The planets of the TRAPPIST-1 system, 40 light years away, have one stunning advantage: there are a bunch of them. All seven of the star’s tightly packed worlds are larger than Mars and less than 20 per cent bigger than Earth, and all orbit well within the distance at which Mercury circles our sun.
All seven of the planets were discovered when they passed between their star and us, so atmospheres around any or all of them could be detected that way, too. Three lie firmly in the habitable zone, and they are so close together that if one has life, it is possible that it could hitch a ride on a rock and spread to the other two.
TRAPPIST-1 is a small star of a type that is often active and dangerous for planets, though, emitting powerful flares of X-rays and UV radiation. Thick protective atmospheres could be its planets’ only hope for hosting life. Astronomers are already using the Hubble Space Telescope to look for such atmospheres.
5. Kepler 186f

At 500 light years away, it will be difficult to look for signs of an atmosphere or life on the planet Kepler 186f, even with the next generation of space telescopes. But it’s one of the most truly Earth-like exoplanets we have found. It’s only 10 per cent larger than Earth, although its mass isn’t well constrained, meaning we aren’t sure what it’s made of.
Like the other worlds on this list, it orbits a relatively dim star about half the size of our sun, but its year is a bit longer at 130 days. That suggests that its surface is about -85°C, or roughly as cold as Mars – chilly, but not too cold for certain microbes to survive.
And there’s another bonus: if Kepler 186f has an atmosphere and an internal magnetic field like Earth’s, they could interact with its star’s frequent flares to create spectacular aurora displays visible around the globe.

• Union Pacific workers are assessing the damage from a multi-car collision at the Hinkle Rail yard, which derailed several rail cars and spilled several hundred gallon of diesel fuel. Bill Nolen, manager of terminal operations at Hinkle, said a mechanical failure caused the accident, which occurred Sunday, April 12. “When the engineer started forward, a coupling snapped and the 25 cars behind rolled back into a waiting group of 60 cars, “Nolen said. “It was a pretty big mess.” Over 600 gallons of diesel fuel leaked from ruptured tanks on two refrigerated cars. Workers hurried to clean up the spilled fuel, but were hampered by the derailed cars.
• Umatilla Sage Riders was host to the Beard Rodeos Rough Stock Schooling over the weekend. Over the three-day weekend rough-stock instruction from three top PRCA cowboys will be given. A National Finals Rodeo veteran gave instruction in saddle bronc riding with current world champion Clint Corey of Kennewick handling the bareback event. Charles Sampson a 1982 world champion bull rider was there to school the local cowboys on bull riding.

• “It was like looking into a white-hot fire,” Mrs. N.V. Ford said, in describing the unidentified flying object she sighted as she stood in her yard on Bridge Road, west of Hermiston, about 9:30 p.m. Thursday, April 13. The object was visible for only a few seconds, she said. It came toward her out of the eastern sky, at a very low altitude and traveling at a very high rate of speed. It was round, flat on the bottom, and had a dome-shaped upper portion; something on the order of an inverted bowl. It was of a white-hot color in the center, shading to deep violet on the edges. A cylindrical shaped flame came from the back of the object. These flames were of varying length and looked exactly like those from a blow torch. The object seemed to be very low, almost at house top level, and was traveling on a horizontal course. And though it seemed to be very near her, Mrs. Ford said she could hear no sound from it what so ever.

• Hermiston merchants and business men who have been in the habit in the past of disposing of excess paper, cartons and other rubbish by burning it in outside trash burners are doomed for disappointment. B.A. Doyle, local fire chief, this week has issued a special notice forbidding this practice within the fire zone, which is composed of the territory from Stone’s Market to the Legion hall and from the Methodist church block to Hamby’s Auto Parts. Any violation hereafter will be punished by a $50 fine. Accumulation of rubbish is also included in the above law. All fireman have been instructed to check on the matter and report violations to the chief.
• Stores, business houses, boarding houses, hospitals, other users or sellers of sugar, other than individual families, will register at the high school April 28 and 29, for their sugar rationing booklets. The school has no discretion or authorization in the matter whatsoever. It simply acts as a place of registration and forwards the results to the county administrator. However, there is now a supply of the blank forms available and people may take them home, and make out their report at their leisure, always providing the reports are registered on April 28 or 29.

• Monday afternoon organization of a branch of the National Honor Guard was completed. Twenty-five joined at the first meeting as that was all the application blanks on hand. Another supply has been sent for and at the next meeting at least 10n more will affiliate. Officers elected were: Vera Purdy, leader; Marion Briggs, assistant leader; Doris Percey, secretary; Esther Graham, treasurer. The honor guard is really a branch of the Red Cross and those joining designate whether they may be had for home work only or whether it necessary they can take up active Red Cross work in the field.
• The campaign by the Civic club to raise funds for fencing the cemetery is making good progress and enough will soon be on hand to start the work. Already about $40 has been raised. Just now the club is working on chain teas and these are spreading rapidly to all sections of the community. Feeling that the cemetery is something all will want to help with the teas are not being confined to club members alone. The first chain was given last week by Mrs. Handline. This week Mrs. Cressy and Mrs. McNaught each gave one and from now on there will be a number each week. The lady giving the tea invites five for an afternoon. Each guest leaves 10 cents with her hostess, which is turned into the cemetery fund and then each guest entertains five of her friends and so on. A record is being kept and the ladies are not to accept but one invitation, which also means she will only entertain but once. In this way the cost to each one is very light but taken collectively a good fund will be raised.

The plain of jars in the plain of Xieng Khouang Laos is one of the sites the most enigmatic of the planet. The exceptional site of thousands of Megalithic stones scattered pots on nearly a hundred sites deeply in the mountains in the north of Laos has fascinated the archaeologists and scientists since their discovery in the 1930s.
The unusual site known under the name of the Plain of Jars is dated the Iron Age (500 BC to 500 after JC) and is composed of at least 3 000 jars of giant stone up to 3 meters high and weighing several tonnes. Most are made of sandstone but there are other facts of granite and limestone much more difficult.
Because the reservoir is the rims to LIP, it is assumed that all were originally covered with discs and even if a few covers of stone have been recorded, it is more likely that the main material used is the wood or Ratan.
The pots seem to have been manufactured with a degree of knowledge of what materials and techniques have been adapted. It is assumed that the Plain of Jars" people have used scissors of iron in their manufacture although no conclusive evidence for this exists. Little is known of the population which has carved the enormous containers and the pots themselves give little evidence on their origin or destination.
According to the local legend, the pots have been created by a race of giants, which the king had need somewhere to store its wine of rice. The wine was to be consumed to a great feast to celebrate a famous military victory there are thousands of years. The legend tells that a wicked king, appointed Chao Angka, which its oppressed people if terribly that they have made call to a good King in the north, appointed Khun Jeuam, for the release. Khun Jeuam and its army is come, and after having conducted a great battle on the plain, defeated Chao Angka.
While some have argued that the giant pots were used to collect rain water to the monsoon, most archaeologists believe that the pots were used as funeral urns. Excavation by LAO and the Japanese archaeologists in the years who has supported this interpretation with the discovery of human remains, burial and the ceramics of goods around the stone jars. It is believed that the pots were used to place the corpses of dead persons where they have been left to decompose or 'distill', a practice that has been common in Thailand and Laos, usually in pits. It is believed that the bodies were left in the pots for the soft tissues to decompose and the body to dry before to be cremated. Once they had been cremated, the ash would have been returned to the URN, or can be buried in a sacred place, freeing the pots for re-use to decompose another body.
Archaeologists have not yet all the answers but, unfortunately, their work has been slowed by the fact that the Plain of Jars is one of the most dangerous of archaeological sites in the world. Dispersed in the plains are literally thousands of tonnes of unexploded bombs, landmines and other unexploded ordnance military, that contaminate more than 35 per cent of the total area of the province and continue to threaten the lives of 200,000 people who live today in Xieng Khouang.

Globalist George Soros gets a lot of attention recently. In an interview with the British Independent, he admitted that he probably had a "bit" of a Messiah fantasy.

" Now in his eighties, he's less worried about keeping his need for control in check, saying instead he "began to live it out." He's certainly put a lot of his ideas into action. Soros supports a variety of liberal and progressive causes and is unafraid to speak out about them.
“I fancied myself as some kind of god …” he wrote. “If truth be known, I carried some rather potent messianic fantasies with me from childhood, which I felt I had to control, otherwise they might get me in trouble.“ When asked by Britain’s Independent newspaper to elaborate on that statement, Soros doubled down: “It is a sort of disease when you consider yourself some kind of god, the creator of everything, but I feel comfortable about it now since I began to live it out.“
His calls for democracy and participation in society have drawn criticism because he specifically includes people of color, immigrants, refugees and Muslims.
Muslim immigration to the US and European countries is a constant worry too many, hence the alleged role George Soros has taken on for them as a symbol and scapegoat. It is clear that he is using his money to force countries to accept Muslim immigrants and to open up their borders. His goals of increasing "democratic" participation are seen more and more as the drive to recruit leftist voters.
“The following four goals form the scaffolding of U.S. Programs’ work,” the guidestates. “1. An American democracy strengthened through increased meaningful participation, inclusive practice, and accountability.” The third strategic goal expands upon this, calling for “Full political, economic, and civic participation of immigrants and communities of color by dismantling the barriers and strengthening the conduits to opportunity.”
He argues for a globalist elite approach to problems like the refugee crisis, saying every country should accept responsibility to help and asking the UN to take the lead in distributing the responsibility. To Europeans who would prefer closed borders, this is as good as asking for an invasion.
Muslim migration “has been the biggest engine of demographic growth in the EU as a whole since the mid-1990s,” a report issued by the EU’s Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development states. “It is about to become the only one.”
There is weak substance to these complaints, even though they probably overestimate Soros and his powers. It is true that marginalized people if they are successfully included in democracy, are probably more likely to vote for liberal candidates.

De afstand tussen LHS 1140b en haar ster is tien keer kleiner dan die tussen de aarde en de zon, maar omdat een rode dwerg veel koeler is dan onze eigen gele dwerg, bevindt de planeet zich nog steeds in de bewoonbare zone.
"De huidige condities van de rode dwerg zijn erg gunstig. LHS 1140b draait trager en stuurt minder hoogenergetische straling uit dan andere sterren met een gelijkaardige massa," zegt onderzoeksmedewerker Nicola Astudillo-Defru van het observatorium van Genève.
Om leefbaar te zijn, moet een planeet vloeibaar oppervlaktewater hebben en over een atmosfeer beschikken. Uit de eerste aanwijzingen blijkt dat LHS 1140b effectief een eigen atmosfeer heeft. De omvang van LHS 1140b in combinatie met haar nabijheid tot haar ster betekent dat er mogelijk miljoenen jaren lang een magmaoceaan op de planeet bestond, die stoom afgaf aan de atmosfeer. Die stoom viel vervolgens als neerslag weer neer en voorzag de planeet van water.

Signaal sturen
Aangezien de planeet zich op amper 39 lichtjaren van de aarde bevindt, zou het zelfs mogelijk zijn om er een signaal naartoe te sturen. "Dit is de meest interessante exoplaneet die ik de voorbije tien jaar heb gezien," zegt hoofdauteur Jason Dittmann van Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "We zouden met moeite een betere plek kunnen vinden om een van de belangrijkste wetenschappelijke expedities uit de voeren: die naar het bewijs van buitenaards leven."
Baanbrekend
Volgens experts kan deze ontdekking wel eens dé doorbraak zijn waar we op zitten te wachten.
Wetenschappers hebben de laatste maanden verschillende baanbrekende ontdekkingen gedaan van planeten waar buitenaards leven wel eens zou kunnen bestaan. In februari werd nog een zonnestelsel hadden ontdekt dat sterke gelijkenissen met het onze vertoont, genaamd Trappist-1. Daar zouden zich minstens zeven planeten bevinden die te vergelijken zijn met de aarde. Vorig jaar opperden sterrenkundigen nog dat er misschien leven mogelijk zou kunnen zijn op Proxima b, een planeet die cirkelt rond onze meest nabije ster op amper vier lichtjaren van ons verwijderd.
Maar volgens experts kan deze ontdekking wel eens dé doorbraak zijn waar we op zitten te wachten. Xavier delfosse van het Franse Nationale Instituut voor Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek die betrokken was bij het onderzoek, is alvast laaiend enthousiast. "Het LHS 1140-sterrenstelsel kan mogelijk nog een belangrijker doelwit zijn dan Proxima b of Trappist-1 voor de toekomstige herkenning van planeten in de leefbare zone. Dit was een uitzonderlijk jaar voor de ontdekking van exoplaneten."
De lancering van zogenaamde 'megaconstellaties' van duizenden communicatiesatellieten kan leiden tot een toename van botsingen en de opstapeling van ruimteafval in de dampkring. Daarvoor waarschuwen wetenschappers.
De lagere kostprijs zal vanaf volgend jaar leiden tot een enorme toename van het aantal satellieten in de ruimte. Momenteel zijn er 1.300 in gebruik, verwacht wordt dat er honderden of zelfs duizenden bijkomen.
Professor ruimtebouwkunde Hugh Lewis van de universiteit van het Engelse Southampton waarschuwt dat een computersimulatie voor de komende 200 jaar het ontstaan van een megaconstellatie toont die zal leiden tot 50 procent meer "catastrofale botsingen" tussen satellieten. Dat zal op zijn beurt leiden tot een toename van de hoeveelheid ruimteafval, wat het risico op botsingen nog doet toenemen en impact zal hebben op de diensten die de satellieten bieden.
Massaproductie "Dat is het model van de productie van satellieten: de kost van één enkele communicatiesatelliet loopt in de honderden miljoenen euro's, maar de massaproductie zal die satellieten veel goedkoper maken. De constellaties die vanaf volgend jaar zullen ontwikkeld worden, bevatten een ongezien aantal satellieten. Wanneer zo'n constellatie onbedachtzaam wordt gelanceerd, zal dat wegens het groeiende aantal botsingen een grote impact hebben op de ruimte", aldus Lewis.
Richtlijnen Lewis, wiens studie werd gefinancierd door het Europese ruimteagentschap ESA, stelt een reeks richtlijnen voor om botsingen te verhinderen. Eén daarvan is de tijd beperken dat de satellieten in de lagere dampkring cirkelen aan het eind van hun missie. Daarnaast wil hij ook dat satellieten kleiner en lichter worden, dat ze uitgerust worden met propulsiesystemen en dat er missies komen om defecte satellieten uit de ruimte te halen.

Dr. Steven Greer has appeared in a number of documentaries such as Sirius, Thrive and The Day Before Disclosure along with the History Channel documentary series Ancient Aliens. Steven Greer founded the Center for the Study of Extraterrestrial Intelligence (CSETI) in 1990 and The Disclosure Project in 1993, which seeks the disclosure of allegedly suppressed UFO information. He retired as an emergency room physician in 1998 to devote more of his time to The Disclosure project, and his interest in aliens and UFO's goes back to when he was eight years old, when he claimed to have seen a UFO at close range.

De waarheid is vaak vreemder dan fictie, zo blijkt uit de nieuwe documentaire Unacknowledged, waarin UFO-geheimen worden ontrafeld die de Amerikaanse overheid al tientallen decennia verborgen probeert te houden.
In de eerste trailer van de documentaire bespreekt dr. Steven Greer onder andere de landing van een buitenaards schip bij Roswell.
Grootste UFO-geheimen
De film maakt duidelijk waarom er zo geheimzinnig wordt gedaan over dit onderwerp en onthult dat overheden en media samenzweren om te verbergen dat buitenaardsen de aarde hebben bezocht.
Getuigenverklaringen, documenten en UFO-beelden maken duidelijk dat er al geruime tijd sprake is van buitenaards contact.
Zo verklaart een sergeant dat hij naar locaties is gestuurd waar lichamen lagen van entiteiten die ‘niet op deze planeet waren geboren’.
Unacknowledged neemt de kijker via de CIA-directeur, topgeneraals van het Pentagon en admiraals mee naar de plek waar de grootste UFO-geheimen worden bewaard.
Stille staatsgreep
Tachtig procent van het materiaal is nog nooit eerder vertoond, claimen de documentairemakers.
Uit de film blijkt dat er in de jaren vijftig een stille staatsgreep is gepleegd en dat het Amerikaanse Congres, de president en andere wereldleiders buitenspel zijn gezet door criminele elementen binnen het militair-industrieel complex.
De documentaire is ingesproken door Giancarlo Esposito, bekend van de populaire serie Breaking Bad.
Van dichtbij
Dr. Greer was eerder te zien in documentaires als Sirius, Thrive en The Day Before Disclosure en ook de documentaireserie Ancient Aliens.

Een Australische vrouw claimt dat ze iedere maand buitenaardse wezens bezoekt aan boord van een schip. Ze laat naar eigen zeggen haar DNA ‘upgraden’ om ‘half-alien’ te worden.
Judy Carroll (64) uit Brisbane herinnert zich niet altijd haar ontmoetingen met de zogeheten Greys, maar ze is er inmiddels wel aan gewend aan, vertelde ze aan het Australische magazine New Idea.
Carroll zegt al van kinds af aan te communiceren met de Greys, die volgens haar dunne lichamen, geen haar en traanvormige ogen hebben.
Puur wit
Op haar 30e stond ze naar verluidt voor het eerst oog in oog met een alien. Ze zei dat haar lichaam plotseling verlamd was en dat er drie buitenaardsen om haar heen stonden.
Ze vertelden haar dat ze moest leren mediteren om met hen in contact te blijven. Ze bezoekt de wezens nu geregeld aan boord van een buitenaards schip, waar alles ‘puur wit’ is.

Jarenlang vertelde ze niemand over haar ervaringen, maar toen ze het haar man Charlie vertelde, zei hij dat hij een alien boven haar zag terwijl ze mediteerde.
Genezen
Carroll zei dat ze aan boord van het schip werkt aan mensen. Ze zou daar ook een leraar hebben, genaamd Maris, die haar in het verleden meerdere keren heeft genezen.
Ze zei dat ze vooral problemen ondervond rond haar keel. Dat was niet verrassend, zei ze, omdat ze half-Grey is en deze aliens geen bewegende kaken hebben.
Evolueren
Carroll legde uit dat ze voordat ze geboren werd de keuze had gemaakt om half-alien te zijn. “Dit ras heeft zich tot doel gesteld om mensen te genezen en ze te helpen evolueren,” zei ze.
Ze voegde toe dat ze zich niet kunnen opdringen aan de mensheid en dat mensen er klaar voor moeten zijn.
