Researchers Spotted Something Very Strange in the Sands of Mars

No, it’s not aliens writing messages in the sand. But there is something weird happening on Mars’ surface—and it’s something that hasn’t been seen anywhere else in the universe.
Researchers looking at images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and the Curiosity rover spotted a strange combination of almost wave-like ripples forming in the sands of Mars. Over time, these formations often even solidified into rock, resulting in these strange landscape photos:

The research into the unique Martian features was led by Caltech’s Mathieu Lapôtre and is detailed today in Science. The researchers say that the ripples are formed by the wind, and they owe their unique appearance to some peculiarities of the Martian atmosphere.
We see sand dunes formed by the wind here on Earth, too, of course. But these Martian sand formations are something completely different. The tiny peaks are not as big as the dunes we see form on Earth, and yet they’re much bigger and sturdier than the ripples that a breeze stirs up in the sand. In fact, the formations, which the researchers are calling “wind-drag ripples,” look like something on Earth—but not anything we see on land. Instead, they look remarkably similar to underwater currents.

The reason for the similarity, Lapôtre told Gizmodo, is Mars’ thin atmosphere.
“It is the low density of the Martian atmosphere that increases the viscosity of air on Mars,” he said, “and thus promotes the formation of the large Martian ripples through wind-drag.”
Although the feature has only been spotted on Mars so far, Lapôtre thinks it’s possible we’ll find similar features elsewhere—we just haven’t gotten close enough to see them yet.
“Comet 67P/Churyumov Gerasimenko and Pluto come to mind,” he said. “While ripple-like features have been previously observed on the comet during the Rosetta mission, the spatial resolution of the beautiful images taken by the New Horizons spacecraft are likely too coarse to resolve possible wind-drag ripples on the grounds of Pluto.”

The formations don’t just look interesting—they could also reveal how Mars’ atmosphere, which was once more Earth-like, became the way it is.
“Because the spacing and size of wind-drag ripples vary with the density of the atmosphere under which they form, we can now look for preserved ‘fossil’ wind-drag ripples in ancient sandstones on Mars, and constrain past atmospheric conditions,” Lapôtre said.
He’s already used the technique on the 3.7 billion year old Burns Formation in Victoria crater, which Opportunity visited in 2007. Although the formation is incredibly old, the ripples are still present. That means that Mars probably lost its thick atmosphere sometime before that 3.7 billion year mark.
Astronomen hebben voor het eerst een planeet (buiten ons zonnestelsel) ontdekt met drie zonnen, zo heeft de Europese Zuidelijke Sterrenwacht ESO vandagag bekendgemaakt, parallel met een publicatie in het wetenschappelijke vakblad Science.
De thuisplaneet van Star Wars-held Luke Skywalker - Tatooine - is een vreemde wereld met twee zonnen aan de hemel. Maar nu hebben astronomen een nóg vreemdere wereld ontdekt.
Onder leiding van de Universiteit van Arizona stootten de astronomen met de VLT-telescoop van de ESO in Chili immers op planeet HD 131399Ab. Het is een uniek object: zijn omloopbaan om de helderste van de drie sterren is verreweg de wijdste die ooit in een meervoudig stersysteem is waargenomen. Zulke banen zijn vaak instabiel, vanwege de complexe en veranderlijke zwaartekrachtsaantrekking van de beide andere sterren in het systeem. Dat hier ook planeten in stabiele banen zouden worden aangetroffen gold als zeer onwaarschijnlijk, zegt de ESO.
HD 131399Ab staat op een afstand van ongeveer 320 lichtjaar in het sterrenbeeld Centaurus. Met een leeftijd van ongeveer 16 miljoen jaar behoort hij tot de jongste exoplaneten die tot nu toe zijn ontdekt. Bovendien is het één van de weinige planeten waar directe opnamen van zijn gemaakt. Binnen deze laatste categorie is hij één van de 'koudste' (580 °C) en 'zwaarste' (4 Jupitermassa's).
Gedurende ongeveer de helft van elke planeetomloop, die 550 aardse jaren duurt, zijn er drie sterren aan de hemel te zien. De zwakkere twee staan altijd veel dichter bij elkaar; hun schijnbare afstand tot de helderste ster verandert in de loop van het jaar. Op het hemellichaam is het dus soms gedurende meer dan een mensenleven de hele dag door licht en vinden er dagelijks drie zonsopgangen en -ondergangen plaats.
Hoewel de precieze baan die de planeet ten opzichte van zijn moedersterren volgt pas vast te stellen is als er meer langetermijnwaarnemingen beschikbaar zijn, wijzen simulaties erop dat de dubbelster, bestaande uit de wat lichtere sterren HD 131399B en -C, op een afstand van ongeveer 300 AE (300 keer de gemiddelde afstand Zon-Aarde) om HD 131399A cirkelt. Deze laatste - de helderste van het gezelschap - heeft tachtig procent meer massa dan de Zon. De sterren B en C wentelen om elkaar op een onderlinge afstand die vergelijkbaar is met de afstand Zon-Saturnus.
Volgens dit scenario beweegt planeet HD 131399Ab op een afstand van ongeveer 80 AE om de ster A - dat is ongeveer twee keer de afstand Zon-Pluto en ongeveer een derde van de afstand tussen ster A en de dubbelster B/C. Er zijn evenwel ook andere baanscenario's mogelijk.
De onverwachte ontdekking wijst er voorts op dat zulke systemen vaker voorkomen dan gedacht, zegt de ESO nog.
VIDEODe maan draait rond de aarde, de aarde draait rond de zon: we weten wel dat het zo werkt, maar dat echt mooi in beeld brengen, lukte niet echt (tenzij met technische trucjes). Dat is veranderd dankzij Juno.
Scott Bolton van het team dat de Juno-missie opvolgt, werd net niet lyrisch toen hij de beelden vrijgaf die de ruimtesonde Juno gefilmd heeft op weg naar Jupiter. "Eeuwenlang hebben we ons voorgesteld hoe de planeten en sterren bewegen. We konden dat enkel nabootsen via computeranimatie of dankzij de inspanningen van Hollywood. Vanavond verandert dat."
De video toont hoe de vier grootste manen van Jupiter - Io, Europa, Ganymedes en Callisto - rond de planeet draaien, als ware het een kosmische dans. "Vanavond kunnen wij voor het eerst de ware harmonie in de natuur zien", aldus Scott Bolton. "Zo zien de manen van Jupiter eruit, zo ziet ons zonnestelsel eruit, zo ziet onze melkweg eruit. Het is harmonie op elke schaal."
De Amerikaanse Marsjeep Curiosity heeft zichzelf in een "veilige modus" gezet, zo heeft space.com woensdag gemeld.
De robot schakelde vandaag om een nog onbekende reden over naar een laag pitje. De Marsverkenner communiceert desondanks nog met de vluchtleiding en is stabiel.
In 2013 gebeurde een zelfde scenario drie keer en telkens kwam de succesvolle robot weer helemaal tot leven, aldus space.com.
De 2,4 miljard dollar kostende Curiosity landde in augustus 2012 in de Gale-krater en heeft de kennis over onze buurplaneet grondig bijgespijkerd.
WETENSCHAPOnderzoekers op deeltjeslab CERN hebben een onbekende familie van exotische deeltjes gevonden. Die bestaan niet zoals gewone materie uit twee of drie zogeheten quarks, maar uit vier van zulke bouwsteentjes. Bovendien zijn dat niet de quarks die bijvoorbeeld protonen of neutronen in de atoomkern maken, maar minder gangbare en veel zwaardere quarksoorten.

De gevonden deeltjes zijn uiterst instabiel en kunnen in de alledaagse materie geen rol spelen. Over exotische materie met vreemde quarks wordt geregeld gespeculeerd, onder meer dat die bijzondere eigenschappen zou kunnen hebben.
De nieuwe zogeheten tetraquarks zijn gevonden met de LHCb-detector, die de brokstukken bekijkt van botsende protonen in de grote LHC-versneller. Die draait sinds een klein jaar met de hoogste energie die ooit in een versneller is gemaakt. De hoop is om zo nieuwe deeltjes te vinden die op ongekende natuurkundige principes wijzen. Eerder bewees de LHC al het bestaan van het befaamde Higgs-deeltje, dat andere deeltjes massa geeft.
In de nieuwe LHCb-data doken vier tetraquarks op die bestaan uit verschillende combinaties van charm- en anti-charm quarks en strange en anti-strange quarks. Een de tetraquarks was al eerder gespot, maar nu zijn er dus nog drie ongekende varianten opgedoken. De LHCb-groep heeft ook hun massa kunnen bepalen: allemaal ongeveer viermaal de massa van een proton, maar onderling duidelijk verschillend.
Dat materiedeeltjes als protonen en neutronen inwendig uit combinaties van quarks bestaat, werd voor het eerst in 1968 geopperd door theoretici. Sindsdien is het bestaan van zes quarks aangetoond. Gewone materiedeeltjes bestaan uit drietallen up en down quarks, in exotischer deeltjes komen ook andere types voor. Daarnaast zijn er ook gangbare deeltjes die uit combinaties van een quark en een anti-quark bestaan.
De theorie voorspelde destijds ook dat er viertallen en zelfs vijftallen van quarks zouden kunnen bestaan. Vorig jaar ontdekten onderzoekers van het CERN ook al de eerste vijfvoudige pentaquark.
Archeologen hebben sporen gevonden van een cultuur in Machu Picchu die nog dateert van voor de Inca's. De onderzoekers vonden een rotsschildering die geen sporen van de Incakunst bevat. Dat schrijft de Peruviaanse krant El Comercio.
Het beeld, waarop een lamaherder met een van zijn dieren is afgebeeld, werd op een rots aangetroffen op 100 meter van de Incastad Machu Picchu en zou ongeveer 800 jaar oud zijn, zegt hoofdarcheoloog José Bastante.
Machu Picchu werd door de Inca's in de 15de eeuw gesticht. Deze tekening is het eerste bewijs van een cultuur die dateert van voor de Inca's. Om het onderzoek niet te verstoren, is de vindplaats voorlopig niet toegankelijk voor bezoekers.
VIDEODe onbemande ruimtesonde Juno van het Amerikaanse ruimtevaartbureau NASA is met succes in een baan rond Jupiter geraakt, na een tocht van vijf jaar. Dat heeft NASA gemeld, die om 05.53 Belgische tijd bevestiging kreeg dat het manoeuvre geslaagd was.
De sonde ontbrandde vanochtend zijn motor voor een 35 minuten durend manoeuvre om in een baan rond Jupiter terecht te komen. NASA kwam via een radiosignaal van 3 seconden te weten dat Juno in zijn missie geslaagd was.
Bedoeling van de sonde is onder andere meer te weten te komen over de magnetische velden, de samenstelling van de atmosfeer en de kern van de planeet.
De wetenschappers hopen op basis van de bevindingen ook meer te leren over het ontstaan van ons zonnestelsel. Uiteindelijk zal de sonde, die met zonne-energie wordt aangedreven, zichzelf vernietigen.
Op twintig maanden tijd zal Juno 37 keer in een baan rond Jupiter draaien.
De twee kleine manen rond de planeet Mars zijn wellicht ontstaan als gevolg van een gigantische botsing met een protoplaneet. Dat blijkt maandag uit een onderzoek waar onder meer de Koninklijke Sterrenwacht van België bij betrokken was. De bevindingen zijn gepubliceerd in het wetenschappelijke magazine Nature Geoscience.
Rond de planeet Mars cirkelen twee kleine aardappelvormige maantjes: Phobos (oud-Grieks voor 'angst') en Deimos ('paniek'). Tot nu toe werd aangenomen dat deze manen asteroïden waren die door Mars zijn ingevangen. Maar een team van Belgische, Franse en Japanse wetenschappers, onder leiding van Pascal Rosenblatt van de Koninklijke Sterrenwacht van België, plaatst nu duidelijke vraagtekens bij die theorie.
De onderzoekers stellen namelijk dat Phobos en Deimos ontstaan zijn uit het puin dat werd opgeworpen na een gigantische botsing van Mars met een drie keer kleinere protoplaneet. Die botsing zou 4 miljard jaar geleden het volledige oppervlak van de noordelijke hemisfeer van Mars vernield hebben.
"In het verleden meer manen"
"Dit scenario vereist dat Mars in het verleden meer manen had, die nu verdwenen zijn, maar ervoor zorgden dat het puin aangroeide tot de huidige maantjes Phobos en Deimos", zo stellen de wetenschappers. Volgens hun hypothese zou die derde maan na enkele miljoenen jaren naar Mars zijn teruggevallen. De natuurlijke satelliet zou meer bepaald uiteengevallen zijn in erg kleine deeltjes die ofwel in de atmosfeer zijn opgebrand ofwel kleine kraters hebben nagelaten.
Nog volgens de wetenschappers zou Mars door die botsing gaan roteren zijn en, net als de aarde, een dag-nachtritme hebben gekregen.
Nieuwe onderzoeken moeten nog meer inzicht brengen in de theorie. Het Japanse ruimtevaartagentschap JAXA wil in 2022 een ruimtesonde lanceren die bodemmonsters van het oppervlak van Phobos naar de aarde zal brengen. Het Europese ruimtevaartagentschap ESA heeft, in samenwerking met het Russische Roscosmos, gelijkaardige plannen voor 2024.

Tienduizenden geheime documenten van de CIA zijn na jaren getouwtrek openbaar gemaakt. Het gaat onder meer om meer dan 12.000 stukken over het programma Stargate, waarbij de inlichtingendienst in het geheim onderzoek deed naar remote viewing.
Begin jaren zeventig ondersteunde de CIA een programma om te onderzoeken of een vorm van buitenzintuiglijke waarneming genaamd remote viewing van nut kon zijn bij het vergaren van inlichtingen.
De Amerikaanse militaire inlichtingendienst DIA doopte het programma Stargate. Men probeerde te achterhalen wat andere landen deden op het gebied van helderziendheid. Daarnaast werd wetenschappelijk onderzoek gedaan naar helderziendheid en werden helderzienden ingezet door de overheid.
‘Helderziendheid duidelijk aangetoond’
De helderzienden kregen les in remote viewing of verzien, precognitie (de toekomst zien) en telepathie. Ze moesten onder meer informatie geven over doelen die niet op een conventionele manier benaderd konden worden.
Parapsycholoog en professor Jessica Utts van de Universiteit van Californië – Irvine concludeerde na haar evaluatie van het project dat helderziendheid duidelijk was aangetoond. “De statistische resultaten van de onderzochte studies stijgen ver uit boven wat op grond van het toeval verwacht mag worden,” schreef ze.
Het onderzoek suggereerde volgens haar dat helderziendheid net zo werkt als onze vijf andere zintuigen, namelijk door verandering waar te nemen. Het is mogelijk dat helderziendheid bestaat uit een soort aftasten van de toekomst om belangrijke veranderingen te vinden, ongeveer zoals onze ogen de omgeving afzoeken op visuele verandering, aldus Utts.
MK-ULTRA
“Het heeft weinig zin door te gaan met experimenten bedoeld om bewijzen te leveren, aangezien er weinig meer geboden kan worden aan eenieder die de huidige gegevens weigert te accepteren,” zei de hoogleraar nog.
Je kunt de documenten over het geheime programma Stargate hier in één keer downloaden of hierbekijken. Ze zijn omgezet in PDF-bestanden zodat ze gemakkelijker kunnen worden gelezen.
Er zijn ook vele duizenden documenten over MK-ULTRA vrijgegeven. In de jaren vijftig experimenteerde de CIA heimelijk op onwetende proefpersonen met als doel een methode te vinden om mensen te hersenspoelen.
Verbranden
In 1974 berichtte de New York Times dat de CIA tussen 1953 en 1963, en mogelijk langer, onder de noemers Artichoke en MK-ULTRA experimenten uitgevoerd had op nietsvermoedende personen. De krant ontdekte dat de CIA zelf methoden ontwikkelde voor hersenspoeling.
Het toenmalige hoofd van de CIA Richard Helms had het schandaal al in 1973 voorzien en destijds al het bewijsmateriaal laten verbranden. Een stapel documenten was echter verkeerd gearchiveerd en werd intact gevonden.
MK-ULTRA had zich vertakt in meer dan 150 subprojecten met experimenten in ruim 80 ziekenhuizen en universiteiten. De documenten over dit geheime programma kunnen hier in één keer worden gedownload of hier stuk voor stuk worden bekeken. Alles bij elkaar gaat het om zo’n 90.000 documenten.
Op crowdfundingsite Kickstarter is een project gestart om de bijna 13 miljoen pagina’s aan CIA-documenten die nog geheim zijn, openbaar te krijgen.

Regelmatig verschijnen er UFO’s bij Mexicaanse vulkanen, maar slechts zelden is klassieke “vliegende schotel” goed te zien.
Bij de UFO die is waargenomen bij de Colima vulkaan enkele dagen geleden is dat wel het geval en deze lijkt heel veel op die die vastgelegd is door Google bij Kaap de Goede Hoop.
Voor UFO liefhebbers vind je de meest interessante plekken waarschijnlijk in en rond de Mexicaanse vulkanen.
Op sommige dagen heb je rond vulkanen zoals de Popocatépetl en de Colima zulk druk UFO verkeer dat je bijna zou verwachten daar een verkeersregelaar te zien.
Soms worden die UFO’s vastgelegd door toeristen of andere mensen die daar toevallig in de buurt zijn, maar heel vaak zijn het de webcams waar vreemde dingen op waar te nemen zijn. Wat je zeker weet met die webcams is dat je te maken hebt met echte opnames en niet met een nepper die probeert de boel te misleiden.
Die webcams nemen foto’s met regelmatige tussenpozen en die bij de Colima vulkaan schijnt dat iedere twee minuten te doen.
Daarom kan op één foto iets te zien zijn, wat dan op een volgende weer is verdwenen.
Of, je ziet een prachtige UFO en deze is gedeeltelijk verborgen achter de identificatie van de webcam, zoals bij de volgende opname.
Deze is gemaakt afgelopen maandag 4 juli en hoewel de UFO gedeeltelijk verborgen gaat achter de naam van de webcam, is duidelijk te zien dat het hier gaat om een prachtig retro exemplaar.
Deze UFO lijkt veel op een eerder waargenomen UFO.
En dat is er een die door niemand minder dan Google is vastgelegd en enige tijd zichtbaar was op Google Earth.
De locatie van het object was ergens bij Kaap de Goede Hoop in Zuid Afrika en deze UFO werd in 2011 op Googleontdekt door ufoloog Scott Waring.
Het moet welhaast één van de mooiste UFO-opnames ooit zijn en wanneer je deze vergelijkt met die bij de Colima vulkaan van enkele dagen geleden, dan zie je de overeenkomsten.
Bizarre is dat drie maanden na de ontdekking deze UFO verdwenen was bij Google. Scott heeft in de loop der jaren ongeveer tien keer een UFO ontdekt en bijna altijd was dit object binnen zes maanden na bekendmaking weer weg/gewist.
Gelukkig zijn er ook opnames die er nog wel zijn en een aantal daarvan zijn te zien in de onderstaande compilatie, gemaakt door Secure Team.

The movie begins on June 12th with Juno 10 million miles from Jupiter, and ends on June 29th, 3 million miles distant. The innermost moon is volcanic Io; next in line is the ice-crusted ocean world Europa, followed by massive Ganymede, and finally, heavily cratered Callisto. Galileo observed these moons to change position with respect to Jupiter over the course of a few nights. From this observation he realized that the moons were orbiting mighty Jupiter, a truth that forever changed humanity's understanding of our place in the cosmos. Earth was not the center of the Universe. For the first time in history, we look upon these moons as they orbit Jupiter and share in Galileo’s revelation. This is the motion of nature's harmony.
Here is an interesting story about giants in Nevada and a fight between them and the local indians. I have heard it many times, and how the giant red head beings got there and where they came from has always intrigued me. I wonder...were they abandoned there on purpose as a punishment, left behind by their own alien species?
Was North America once inhabited by a race of giants? According to an old legend supported by several challenging archaeological finds, it is possible.
Many Native American tribes tell stories about the long-forgotten existence of a race of humans that were much taller and stronger than ordinary men. These giants are described as both brave and barbaric and legends often mention their cruelty towards whomever they pleased.
The Paiute, a tribe that settled in the Nevada region thousands of years ago, have an outstanding legend about a race of red-haired giants called the Si-Te-Cah. The ancestors of the Paiute described them as savage and inhospitable cannibals.
In the Northern Paiute language, ‘Si-Te-Cah’ literally means ‘tule-eaters.’ Legend has it that the giants came from a distant island by crossing the ocean on rafts built using the fibrous tule plant.
As odd as it may sound, this legend repeats itself all over the Americas, suggesting it might be an incomplete chronicle of a real event that happened long ago.
In Crónicas del Perú, sixteenth century Spanish conquistador Pedro Cieza de León recorded an ancient Peruvian tale about the origin of the South American giants. According to legend, they “came by sea in rafts of reeds after the manner of large boats; some of the men were so tall that from the knee down they were as big as the length of an ordinary fair-sized man.”
Could the giants of Peru and the Si-Te-Cah have been survivors of a massive cataclysm who took refuge on the American continent?
Legend tells that the Si-Te-Cah waged war on the Paiute and all other neighboring tribes, spreading terror and devastation. Finally, after years of conflict, the tribes united against the common enemy and began to decimate them. The last remaining red-haired giants were chased off and sought shelter inside a cave. The tribes started a fire at the cave entrance, suffocating and burning alive the Si-Te-Cah. Those driven out by the smoke were also killed.
The tribes then sealed off the mouth of the cave so that no one might set eyes on those who had once plagued their land. They were all but forgotten until a random event brought them back to light.
In 1886, a mining engineer named John T. Reid happened to hear the legend from a group of Paiutes while prospecting near Lovelock, Nevada. The Indians told him that the legend was real and the cave was located nearby. When he saw the cave for himself, Reid knew he was onto something.

Because the US gov found out that the Chinese and Russians also know about the base, so they wanted to destroy it right away. I saw it live in front of my students in my classroom. I also remembered a guy who looked angry and packed up all his gear and left during their celebration of the nuke going off. He was pissed, and he was packing all his computer stuff and quitting his job. Its clear this guy knew about the alien base and was pissed all to hell that he had to hide this information from the public too, but now the US gov wants to destroy this usable base with a nuke? Who wouldn't be pissed over that? Well, high five guy for one. This guy high fiving...he acts like he dent know about the base, or just doesn't care. Yes there is proof of a base, the press took a photo of they guys and its HD, below his arm in the photo on his desk...there is a square base visible. Click here to view it. Filmed this a few days ago to show how close this guy was flying over while crop dusting. Just got done playing it and saw something I hadn’t noticed….watch when he’s about 1/2 way through (:15) his banking around to the left. The quality isn’t as good uploaded as it is on the phone, but it’s still clearly visible. Watch in HD if possible. Outside of Marion Texas, between San Antonio and Seguin, right off I-10.

A family of three, in Iglesias (Italy) has been involved into an extraordinary sighting. A flying saucer has literally chased their car for more than 20 kilometers. The UFO was interacting with witnesses miming their movements. At some point the object has split in a dozen of objects, a flottilla. A witness stated that he warned by phone a relative who reached the place of the sighting in a few minutes without comprehend how he did it. Two videos of the sighting UFOs were filmed. The surveys were conducted by C.UFO.M. under the leadership of President Dr. Angelo Carannante. Carannante said the case is also unexplained after thorough investigations

One of the first convincing nighttime sightings I recorded with my Sony A7s camera. While I was pointing a laser to some stars in the sky, two clear objects flying at different speeds crossed the sky. I didn’t notice them when they appeared. After checking the footage on my PC, I noticed a pretty weird fast object glowing regularly. I first thought it was a meteor, but its constant speed and trajectory suggest something else. Indeed, I zoomed in and animated the position of the video to put the object in the center, and followed its trajectory: the object doesn’t change its speed and keeps its trajectory in a straight line. My guess is that it was some sort of propelled object, either reflecting light from an external source, or emitting its own light (a craft?).
The Hubble Space Telescope has been capturing incredible images from space for over 26 years and it’s going to keep doing it for five more years.
NASA is contractually extending science operations for the iconic telescope until 2021, despite its intended 15 year lifespan. On Thursday, the agency awarded a sole source contract extension to the Association of Universities for Research in Astronomy for continued Hubble science operations support at the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore, according to NASA.

This contract extension will allow the Hubble mission to continue the work its been doing since April 1990. Since the last of five servicing missions in 2009, Hubble has been outfitted with a docking space for a thruster. This attachment will take it out of Earth’s orbit and let it burn up in the atmosphere before crashing somewhere on Earth’s surface, according to Wired.
After the retirement of NASA’s space shuttle program in 2011, repair missions have ceased, so keeping Hubble in space until 2021 will be a huge achievement. NASA expects that Hubble will continue to provide valuable data as its mission continues observing our solar system and beyond.
The telescope’s successor, the James Webb Space Telescope is scheduled for launch in 2018 and will be able to gaze even farther back in time to the birth of the first stars.

NASA's Jupiter probe, Juno, has entered orbit around the gas giant after a 35 minute burn to decelerate the craft, which was headed toward Jupiter at 135,000 MPH.
The burn was make-it-or-break-it. Had it not gone according to plan, the craft might've flown right past the planet. Now, it will work from a 53 day orbit into a 14 day orbit, making 37 passes over 20 months in an effort to understand the interior of the largest planet in our solar system.
In that time, the craft will repeatedly put itself on the line in Jupiter's intense radiation. Some instruments, including the Juno cam, may not make the entire journey. In the end, though, we may be able to tell if Jupiter formed closer to the sun (like so called "Hot Jupiters") and migrated out or formed closer to its present location.
Stay tuned — the next two years are going to open new chapters into our understanding of how the solar system we see today came to be. It's an exciting time.

(Phys.org)—A pair of researchers, one with the Columbia Astrobiology Center in New York, the other with the University of Glasgow in the U.K. has come up with a mathematical equation that when solved is meant to offer a means for estimating how often life begins on other planets. In their paper published in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Caleb Scharf and Leroy Cronin describe their equation, how they came up with it and why they believe it might become more useful as scientists learn more about the true nature of other planets and solar systems.
Back in the 1960's, an astronomer named Frank Drake came up with a formula for estimating the likely number of alien civilizations that might be capable of transmitting radio signals in such a way as to be recognizable by receivers here on earth. That equation, named quite naturally the Drake Equation has been the unofficial standard-bearer for half a century, despite it having no solution because some of the parameters are still unknown. The same holds true for the new equation developed by Scharf and Cronin, but the results given should the unknowns ever be discovered would offer a different sort of answer than Drake was looking for.
To build their formula, the duo came up with several parameters to solve for abiogenesis, which is the likelihood of an event occurring that leads to life beginning, they included the number of possible building blocks, the mean number of such blocks per possible organism, the availability of building blocks that might exist during a given time period, expressed as a fraction and the probability that the existence of the building blocks would actually lead to life starting in a given unit of time. It looks like this:

In essence the formula is meant to suggest that the probability of life beginning on a given planet is very likely connected to whether there are building blocks available on a given planet, and how much of them there might be. As more is learned by space researchers it is hoped that the formula could help narrow down search targets by offering a statistical probability of success for a given planet. The researchers note that the building blocks available do not necessarily have to be of the type that led to life beginning on our planet. They also suggest that implied in the formula is the likelihood that life beginning events are more likely to occur in solar systems where there are multiple planets, which allow for an opportunity to share materials that could lead to building blocks.
Abstract A simple, heuristic formula with parallels to the Drake Equation is introduced to help focus discussion on open questions for the origins of life in a planetary context. This approach indicates a number of areas where quantitative progress can be made on parameter estimation for determining origins of life probabilities, based on constraints from Bayesian approaches. We discuss a variety of "microscale" factors and their role in determining "macroscale" abiogenesis probabilities on suitable planets. We also propose that impact ejecta exchange between planets with parallel chemistries and chemical evolution could in principle amplify the development of molecular complexity and abiogenesis probabilities. This amplification could be very significant, and both bias our conclusions about abiogenesis probabilities based on the Earth and provide a major source of variance in the probability of life arising in planetary systems. We use our heuristic formula to suggest a number of observational routes for improving constraints on origins of life probabilities.

You can forget about little green men and predatory Xenomorphs: aliens are likely to look a lot like human beings, according to an expert in evolution from the University of Cambridge. In a new book, Simon Conway Morris says that any extra-terrestrial lifeforms will have evolved very much like we have - because an Earth-like planet would be necessary to support life in the first place.
The theory, called convergent evolution, is actually already well established: the idea is that different species evolve similar characteristics because they're living in a similar environment. One of the most commonly cited examples is the octopus camera eye, which works in much the same way as a human eye. Morris thinks that because alien species will be living on planets like our own, they'll evolve along similar lines.
It should make interplanetary diplomacy a little easier, at least.
The academic discusses the theory in a new book published this week, The Runes Of Evolution. "The book is really trying to persuade the world that evolutionary convergence is completely ubiquitous," Morris told The Independent. "Wherever you look you see it. The theme is to try and drive the reader, gently of course, into the possibility that the things which we regard as most important - cognitive sophistication, large brains, intelligence, tool-making - are also convergent."
"Therefore, in principle, other Earth-like planets should very much end up with the same sort of arrangement."
And it doesn't stop at humans either. The Cambridge professor believes that plant and animal life will probably have followed the same evolutionary pattern too. "Certainly it's not the case that every Earth-like planet will have life, let alone humanoids," he says. "But if you want a sophisticated plant it will look awfully like a flower. If you want a fly there's only a few ways you can do that. If you want to swim like a shark, there's only a few ways you can do that. If you want to invent warm-bloodedness, like birds and mammals, there’s only a few ways to do that."
The book also deals with the paradox put down by Enrico Fermi: if aliens exist, why have they not yet made contact? "The problem is exceedingly acute," says Morris. "We shouldn't be alone but, famous last words, all the evidence suggests we are. Maybe [aliens] are hiding, the Arthur C Clarke idea, or as Stephen Baxter mischievously suggested, we live in a virtual world. I don't honestly know. My suspicion is we have only begun to scratch at the surface of reality, for want of a better word."
Of course there are plenty of competing ideas about what alien lifeforms look like, but if Morris is right, they could already be living among us.
