Former Airman Abducted Experimented On And Forced Into Life Of Slavery On Secret Moon Base

A former U.S. Air Force radar tracking operator recalls her traumatic experience of being abducted multiple times, experimented on, and forced into slave labor on a secret moon base.

In 1980, an unexpected event changed Niara Terela Isley’s life forever. While traveling with some of her colleagues on a mission at the Tonopah Test Range, their aircraft encountered a glowing UFO that maintained course alongside them. Ground control instructed them to get a radar lock and intercept the flying saucer.

Upon landing, Isley and her colleagues were quickly taken into custody by one of the Air Force’s covert branches.

In a book she wrote, the former airman describes her ordeal. Over the course of several months, Isley was abducted about 8 to 10 times and taken to a secret moon base on the dark side of the Moon. The base was under the control of reptilian beings but operated by human personnel. Isley claims that like her, most of them were held there against their will.

Many abductees say one of the bases on the Moon resembles the Pentagon.

• I was very poorly fed and worked hard during the day cycle, operating some kind of electronic equipment for excavation at times, and doing physical manual labor at others, such as lifting and stacking boxes.
• Worst of all, I was used for sex during what passed for night there, from man to man,” she wrote.

The pinnacle of this inhumane treatment was a long string of experiments designed to mentally wear her down and remove her free will. The medical procedures were performed by Gray extraterrestrials, which means that the conspiracy runs deep.

And so it went on and on for months until she was finally released. But Isley is convinced she wasn’t set free without first being subjected to a memory wipe.

In fact, she says that an acute absence of memories from that period tipped her off she might have been the victim of an abduction. For a period of three months in 1980, Isley had no memories although at the time she was working for the U.S. Air Force.

Unnerved by her missing time, she underwent hypnosis and recovered her suppressed memories. It seems like the memory wipe was unsuccessful.

Niara Terela Isley and many other abductees are convinced that most—if not all—abductions are actually performed or supported by military forces worldwide. A popular conspiracy theory calls these operations MILABs (Military Abductions) and hypothesizes they are way more common than you would think. Isley and her peers recommend hypnosis therapy to anyone who’s experienced long periods of missing time.

While Isley brings little evidence in support of her testimony (besides her testimony), she does bring up several interesting points.

The presence of a joint Reptilian-Gray-human secret base on our satellite is worrisome and the abduction phenomenon is alarming, to say the least. But the perspective of unwillingly carrying memories of being forced into slavery and routinely experimented on is something else—the seed of paranoia.

If Isley is true, we’re all living a lie.

Vreemde UFO boven  en in Chinese tempel ( Video )

Chinese monniken zien in de late avond van afgelopen 29 mei een vreemde spookachtige UFO boven hun klooster hangen.

Het object dat alsmaar van vorm verandert, hangt zo’n zeven minuten boven en in de tempel in de plaats Anhui.

De monniken zeggen dat ze werden gealarmeerd doordat de alarminstallatie afging.

Wat het ook was dat de monniken zagen boven hun tempel, het veranderde alsmaar van vorm. In eerste instantie werd het omschreven als een appel, toen als een klassieke vliegende schotel en later als een soort zittende boeddha.

Een geraadpleegde “expert” komt met de uitleg van een insect die te dichtbij de camera vloog.

Het object was in ieder geval groot/krachtig genoeg om de alarmsystemen te laten afgaan toen het de hal van de tempel binnenvloog.

De videobeelden die onderaan staan laten zien dat het object uit de lucht kwam rond elf uur ’s avonds en boven de Baita tempel bleef hangen.

Het verdween kort enkele minuten uit het zicht en op een gegeven moment verscheen het weer in de hal van de tempel voor een seconde of tien.

Het schijnt dat na een minuut of zeven de UFO snel begon rond te draaien om vervolgens uit beeld te schieten, middenin een zware regenbui.

De monniken in de tempel stonden en staan met de mond open en hebben geen flauw idee wat dit zou kunnen zijn.

Eén van de monniken, Shi Xingkong, zei: “Toen ik het alarm hoorde afgaan, stond ik op om het uit te doen en ging naar buiten waar ik niets ongewoons zag.

Het was pas toen ik op de monitor keek dat ik de UFO zag, waarover hij bovendien zegt dat hij er nooit eerder een heeft gezien. 

Een andere monnik, Chen Songzheng, zei: “Als de UFO niet de tempel was binnen gegaan dan had het niet het infrarode alarmsysteem in werking gezet en hadden wij niet geweten dat het daar was.

Uiteraard komen dan de “experts” ten tonele die wel even zullen uitleggen wat het dan wel was. Volgens de ene was het een insect die te dichtbij de camera kwam en volgens een andere jawel daar istie weer, een drone.

Het voorval is hoe dan ook ontzettend populair op de sociale media in China en een groot deel van de bevolking houdt het dan ook op een buitenaards voertuig.

UFOs Down Under: How Real Australian UFO Hunters Train Their Investigators

An Australian group of UFO hunters has introduced in-house training and an examination, to ensure that its members know how to deal with the public properly, but the exam will not be added to the TAFE curriculum in the near future, as reported by the Australian media. 

"Our first test was held on Sunday but its still in its infancy," Ivan Rigoni, Victorian UFO Action's (VUFOA's) investigations case coordinator tells IBTimes UK.

"The test touches on preliminary research and investigation. It's an educational tool to help our investigators realise the difference between natural phenomena like meteors, stars, the lunar cycle, ball lightning and cloud formations, as opposed to man-made phenomena like weather balloons, aircraft and drones.

"The test also touches on how to write a report; how to conduct yourself with a witness, what questions to ask; and how to determine whether someone might be hoaxing or if it's a misidentified object."

Their training manual is two inches thick and the group hopes to eventually be able to offer advanced investigation training to their members. However, while they wouldn't rule out making their qualification a formal one, it's not the most important thing.

Unidentified, not extra-terrestrial

VUFOA was started in 2008 by Andrew Arnold, a keen documentary maker who continues to document the group's cases in YouTube videos.

Anyone can join VUFOA – they just have to have a genuine interest in UFOs, pass the in-house test, and make an efffort to attend weekly meetings.

The group's main activities consist of investigating UFO sightings in Victoria, as well as researching and collating data on UFOs in a database and manning a 24-hour hotline for the public. 

The 15-member strong team includes investigators, a disclosure document specialist with access to 240,000 previously classified documents from different countries, and a qualified in-house hypnotherapist, who is available to counsel citizens who claim to have been abducted by aliens.

However the group makes a clear distinction to demonstrate that it operates from a position of science.

"UFO stands for unidentified flying object, we don't perceive it as being extra-terrestrials," explains Rigoni.

"We like tangible evidence that can be qualified and quantified. We tend to stay away from alien abduction. It's foolish to assume we're alone in the universe and we all presume [extra-terrestrials exist], but I've never seen or touched ET or an alien space ship."

The group investigates about 150 cases a year of reported sightings of UFOs, and the hotline is most busy during winter and summer.

Often, people will call VUFOA claiming to see lights in the sky during the summer, says Rigoni.

However, these sightings are usually confused with the planet Venus, which is visible low in the sky, and as the Earth rotates, appears to move over half hour-to-hourly intervals.

Unsolved cases

Besides investigating new sightings, the group also looks into infamous UFO cold cases that have puzzled Australians for decades.

One of the cases they recently looked into was the Burkes Flat case, which is one of the most famous UFO incidents in Victoria's history.

Two men experienced a UFO encounter on two separate nights in 1966 in the same location. The first, Ron Sullivan, saw coloured floating lights in a field by the road. He also saw his car headlights bend off to the right, causing him to almost drive straight into a tree.

Unfortunately, the same thing is believed to have happened to another man, Gary Taylor, who was killed in a car accident when his car collided with the same tree two nights later.

When police investigated Sullivan's report, they found a shallow depression in the ground exactly where Sullivan saw the coloured lights.

Each member of VUFOA has seen an unidentified flying object and continues to search for answers, including Rigoni, who recorded seven minutes of footage last year of a strange floating object in Albanvale. 

"Through history, the [Australian] government and authorities have willingly and knowingly hidden possible cases and occurrences to which they have no answer for," he says.

"I think that the perception of UFOs [in Australia] is changing. They're more accepting of it now. There are a lot of cases out there that don't get reported, but it's definitely getting bigger."

We recently asked you guys for YOUR questions to Nick Pope, John Burroughs and Jim Penniston (John and Jim were two of the key witnesses to the Redlesham Forest incident) and we now have your answers!

Nick Pope has kindly agreed to answer the questions in full and has come back with some very thought provoking/interesting answers!

As most of you will know Nick is ex British Ministry of Defence (MOD) and in his time spent a long stint being responsible for the UK’s UFO investigations, which even though he has now retired from the MOD he is still hungry for the TRUTH.

Nick has become a very popular face in the UFO world of research, he was part of the team involved with the ‘Citizen Hearing’ event back in 2013, answering questions and discussing about the events that happened in Rendlesham Forest – Nick has worked closely with John Burroughs and Jim Pennsiston, in order to help try and uncover what they had witnessed that night back in 1980. Nick, John and Jim all helped put together the incredible book ‘Encounter in Rendlesham Forest‘ (U.I.P highly recommends to you all).

Nick has attended many TV shows and news channel interviews throughout the world and has appeared as contributor on numerous US and UK documentaries on networks including Discovery Channel, History Channel, National Geographic and the BBC.

Nick Popes Answers to your questions

Question: I have a couple of questions please (1) what does John Believe it is he saw in the Forest that night? And (2) Nick do YOU believe Aliens are visiting us? Thank you (Scott Wicker)

Answer: I don’t think there’s any definitive ‘you can take that to the bank’ proof, but there’s plenty of intriguing evidence, and I certainly remain open-minded about the possibilities. We should always bear in mind that the skeptics need to be right every single time, but the believers only need to be right once! (N.P)

Question: for both, Nick and John. I’m interested in Glowing Orbs phenomena, similar to Hessdalen Lights or Fire, recently seen over Massachusetts, and few more places across America and the rest of the world. So, do you think that those glowing orbs have any connection with bigger form of intelligent life? Sent like patrol, and do they observe us in a way, since they reveal their existence, or there is something bigger in question? (Matea Pandzic )

Answer: Orbs are certainly a global phenomenon, but as with UFOs, I very much doubt that there’s a single, neat solution that’s going to explain every sighting. So, as with the wider UFO phenomenon, there are likely to be several things going on here, in parallel: some misidentifications, some hoaxes, and maybe something else. (N.P)

Question: Nick and John I have both read your fantastic book, thank you! Question to you both, do you believe that what John saw that night was there for a reason and will one day return?! (Mikey)

Answer: Thank you for your kind words about our book. I’m glad you enjoyed it and found it interesting. I think it’s clear that whatever John Burroughs, Jim Penniston and others encountered in Rendlesham Forest was under intelligent control. That being the case, it was certainly there for a reason. As to whether or not it will return, I don’t know. I certainly hope so. (N.P)

Question: Does John think they were malevolent or benevolent aliens? Do they think when we finally get disclosure will it be a watered down version or full disclosure??(Rex)

Answer: It depends what there is to disclose. If there’s a spaceship in a hangar smoking gun, fair enough, there’s something tangible to reveal, but what if the situation is less clear-cut? What if even the authorities have no clear idea of what’s going on? That’s why I make the distinction between disclosure with a big D and disclosure with a little d. (N.P)

Question: My question for Nick is if disclosure comes, will is negatively or positively affect the world’s religious beliefs and the world Government system? (Anietie Joseph Stephen)

Answer: It’s almost impossible to answer questions like this, because there are so many variables. But I attended two Royal Society discussion meetings in the UK back in 2010 that addressed questions such as this, and interestingly, the consensus was that barring some “Independence Day” style alien invasion, simply announcing the discovery or existence of extraterrestrial life might not have the big impacts people often think about. The main reason is that so many people already think this is a reality, and self-evidently, you don’t shock people by telling them something they already believe. Theologian Ted Peters has done some specific research into the likely implications for religion, and far from finding that the existence of alien life would shatter people’s faith, he found it would reinforce their religious belief, by making God’s creation seem even more expansive. One can clearly see the Catholic Church positioning itself for such an announcement. Do they know something? I doubt it. Are they hedging their bets so they can say “we told you so”? Very possibly! (N.P)

Question: Has there ever been an alien incident where they have gained entry to the air force bases that they know of? (Rex Kelly )

Answer: There have been plenty of cases where UFOs have been seen in close proximity to military bases, and indeed directly overhead, but I can’t recall anything that would fit the description “gained entry”. That said, a UFO over a close to a military base is, in and of itself, a security issue. (N.P)

Question: Has there been any more progress deciphering the code imprinted on john (Vanessa)

Answer: It’s Jim Penniston – and not John Burroughs – who’s associated with the binary code message. Work on this real-life Da Vinci Code is continuing, and an eclectic mix of computer programmers, esoteric authors, cryptographers, physicists and ufologists are struggling to make sense of the codes. A potential decoding of the message was given in our book on the case, “Encounter in Rendlesham Forest”, but people are digging deeper, to see if there’s a message hidden deeper in the code. If I still worked at the MoD I could have asked GCHQ to try to crack the code (and maybe they’ve tried to do this anyway), but now that I’ve left government service, these resources are no longer available to me. Jim Penniston is best-placed to update people on The Rendlesham Code. (N.P)

Question: I would love to ask nick pope & john Burroughs a question; what the best and most compelling evidence of UFO and alien existence you have witnessed and why? And was this evidence ever released or seen by the public? Many thanks (Cj Bird)

Answer: I think the most compelling UFO incident that I’ve come across is the Rendlesham Forest incident, and if you’ll forgive a book plug, I put the best available evidence in “Encounter in Rendlesham Forest”, the book on the case that I co-authored with John Burroughs and Jim Penniston. (N.P)

Question: And for plate shaped UFO’s, do they have any connection with the military, because I believe the most of real seen UFO’s are military connected., so the last question remains; where they got that kind of technology? Thank you. (Matea Pandiz)

Answer: UFOs come in all shapes and sizes, but so do aircraft and drones, so it’s often difficult to tell whether some UFO sightings are misidentifications of secret prototype aircraft/drones, or something else. In strictly aerodynamic terms, however, saucer-shaped craft are very difficult to fly. (N.P)

Question: Does Nick/John think these UFOs we are seeing as lights and orbs are extra-dimensional?(Evon Aherne )

Answer: I don’t know. A few years ago such a concept would have been dismissed as science fiction, but now, scientists at the Large Hadron Collider are openly discussing the possibility that the LHC will discover proof of so-called “hidden dimensions”, so who knows? (N.P)

Question: I’d like to ask about the something I heard about the president’s book of secrets. Of course it is a secret so may not be easy to answer, but…I’ve heard there was 1 hostile/aggressive encounter. Do u have any info on this encounter? Thanks! (Julie Moore)

Answer: I suspect the idea that there is a “President’s Book of Secrets” owes more to fiction than fact, but I guess if such a thing exists, there may well be information about UFOs in it. (N.P)

Question: Do they believe official full disclosure will happen anytime soon? (Dave Avery)

Answer: With the declassification and release of various country’s UFO files we’re arguably already getting disclosure with a little d. As to disclosure with a big D, as I’ve said previously, it depends what there is to disclose. (N.P)

Question: Is the top secret TR-3B a reversed alien technology from other secret bases besides area 51? And which aliens are we working with between the 4 types that we know of. And last, is there any truth the illuminati group and are they have connections to alien alliances?(David Brooks)

Answer: If we had extraterrestrial technology I’m certain we’d try to back-engineer it, but so far as I’m aware, all the top secret prototypes we have are the product of decidedly human ingenuity. I don’t buy into theories about the Illuminati, I’m afraid. (N.P)

Question:  Nick/John – what do they think of the possibility that the world really is already run by either one or several Alien races? And that is why we the ordinary people of the human race never get to know the real truth. (Teemu Nyholm)

Answer: I don’t believe such theories at all. If aliens are secretly running the world, they’re doing a pretty poor job. (N.P)

Question: What am I possibly seeing when I look up (with telescope) at night, e.g., bright blue lights, pulsing, more than 1 at times, – an always moving at incredible speeds, and impossible manoeuvring stopping, then moving off at different angles, side by side, I saw this on 2 diff locations (like the lights were playing, almost,) on different nights, months apart,
What could I be seeing in the late-night skies, every other night? (Christopher Leigh Hamilton)

Answer: It’s almost impossible to say from a description only, and I recommend that you contact an organisation such as BUFORA or ASSAP, so that they can investigate these sightings thoroughly. (N.P)

Question: Have you heard of a pulse drive technology? Is this from alien involvement or is technology from our government. And what do you think of ancient aliens program and the truth behind the show….(David Brooks)

Answer: I’ve heard of pulse drive technology, though as ever, there’s something of a dogfight over this, between theoretical physicists and engineers. In other words, it’s one thing to come up with theories and ideas, but it’s quite another to actually build something! I’ve appeared on “Ancient Aliens” many times, but I don’t buy into the central premise of the show, so I confine my interviews to my own areas of knowledge and expertise. Love it or hate it, the show has been a huge success and has done a lot to show TV network executives just how much interest there is in all this. (N.P)

Question: Nick, He sits on the fence sometimes and yet says something and then nothing. Do you still have to be careful with what you say Nick as I have read that you cannot disclose specific information until so many years after working for the MOD? (Peterkirklive Bideford)

Answer: I’ve heard the accusation that I “sit on the fence” and while I take the point, I think it stems from the fact that unlike true believers or die-hard debunkers (who are absolutely certain that their view is correct) I’m not afraid to say “I don’t know”. But to answer the specific question, my secrecy oath (The UK’s Official Secrets Act) binds me for life, and inevitably this places limits on what I can say. (N.P)

Question: when is NASA going to tell the TRUTH. Do you believe NASA are hiding secrets from us about the UFO’s? (Daniel Vargo)

Answer: I know a few people in NASA and the funny thing is that they’re quite open to a lot of this. A lot of other scientists criticise NASA for being too keen to say “aliens”. Look at the row over the Martian meteorite, cited by NASA as being evidence of fossilised microbial extraterrestrial life. Many scientists accused NASA of jumping the gun and being too credulous. Most NASA/UFO theories revolve around people spotting anomalies in NASA’s own photos and videos, so it would be a pretty inept cover-up if the gatekeepers of this great secret kept slipping up and accidentally releasing evidence of extraterrestrial activity. Question: Nick – Whilst working for the MOD, did you come across something or maybe some secret video project related to aliens, which makes you want to carry on exploring the aliens even after you have left your job? (Dalibor Lalic)

Answer: No, I didn’t. But the mystery was too exciting to abandon and the question of whether or not we’re alone in the Universe is one the biggest and most profound questions we can ask, so that’s why I stay involved, long after I stopped working for the government on this issue. (N.P)

Question: Are we ever going to unite with Alien neighbours? When there was an intergalactic fight in the sky long ago, were they protecting us/earth – is there any proof of this?? (PJ Trivium)

Answer: If there are other civilisations out there, I’m sure that we’ll take our place alongside them at some stage. But there’s no proof of ancient battles between alien races, with the earth being protected somehow. (N.P)

Question: Jordan 1996 British Army I was witness to a UFO nick was this ever reported to you (Maximus Orillias Price)

Answer: My time on the MoD’s UFO project (N.P)

Question: Nick – I read an article the other day, I’ve tried to find it again to double check names, (it was on another page) but it appeared to dismiss the whole Rendlesham thing. A guy I think called Conroy who was a superior officer, claims the whole thing was a hoax. Perpetrated by other US. Personnel after the original investigating guys confused the nearby lighthouse for an alien craft. He even said the Geiger counter picked up nothing unusual. Which contradicts everything I had heard previously. Are Mr Pope and the others aware of this, and have they retained any physical evidence, other than what we know already exists. I.E the actual radio/ phone tapes etc.? It sounded to me like a smokescreen to undermine the actual facts of the case, I can’t believe so many military personnel would confuse a fricking lighthouse for a UFO over 2 separate nights but I’m curious if they are aware of this sideways shift in the story? (Simon Farren)

Answer: I’m not sure what article you’ve seen, but the senior officer you mention is almost certainly Colonel Ted Conrad, who was the base commander at the time of the incident. One ufologist claims to have spoken to him, but I’m not aware of any independent corroboration of this, so it’s far from certain this actually happened. As for the theory about the lighthouse, this is being perpetuated by an amateur astronomer dishonestly trying to position himself as an expert on the case. The lighthouse isn’t even visible from most of the locations from which the UFO was seen, so this theory holds no water.(N.P)

Question: Is the latest outbreak in the past 5-10 years of “mainstream” media covering and reporting and UFO activity (i.e. documentaries, news reports, movies etc.) an attempt at a global preparation of acceptance?(Mitchell Keena)

Answer: I don’t think so. I think it simply reflects the fact that TV network executives, newspaper editors and other media professionals recognise that there’s huge public interest in this subject at the moment. (N.P)

Question: Hi I have a question:
The base air traffic controller stated that he saw an inbound bogey coming in extremely fast, however it then flew onto Bentwaters airfield right alongside the ATC tower and then stopped, hovered with bright multi coloured lights and was massive, only to then shoot off at unbelievable speed.
Can he comment on the validity of this storey and was it witnessed by other personnel at the base? (Tony Eve)

Answer: We detail some of the radar data relating to this case in “Encounter in Rendlesham Forest”, name the personnel involved, and reproduce one of the key MoD documents relating to radar evidence. This is certainly one of the most important and best-evidenced aspects of the Rendlesham Forest incident.  (N.P)

Question: “Yes” or “No” do you believe the Roswell incident was indeed a crashed UFO? (Nic Jarvis)

Answer: No.

Question: I would like to know where I should go on vacation to most likely have a UFO sighting. (Jody Kyle Faulkner)

Answer: Probably Rendlesham Forest! It’s still an active location, by all accounts. In America, you can probably hang around Area 51, but anything strange you see may just be the next generation stealth fighter. (N.P)

Question: If it is true that the reptilian control the illuminati, so it means that reptilian are a threat to humanity? Or is this all one big made up story? (Agnes Dolosa)

Answer: It’s all one big made up story. (N.P)

Question: Nick – ok here is a question… Could the mysterious humming sounds that are heard around the UK be caused by a hidden Alien communication station located near or in the forest? A friend of mine says that apparently the sound is super intrusive that people have committed suicide because of it. (Renata Gill)

Answer: I’m sceptical about this theory, and suspect it has more to do with power lines than with anything extraterrestrial. (N.P)

Question: Could you ask Nick on his views of UFOs using Lightning as a power source? I have been lucky enough to have seen this seen several during a thunder and lightning storm and would like to know his opinion? (Robbie Hodson)

I’ve heard various theories about what any visiting extraterrestrials might be using for power, including water, nuclear energy and lightning. They’re all good theories, I think, but the honest answer is that we simply don’t know. It’s all just speculation. (N.P)

Question: Do they think that it’s the ETs who are stopping disclosure from happening and not the governments?? (Chris Davis)

Answer: There’s certainly some logic in the argument that if we’re being visited by intelligent extraterrestrials, they – and not our own governments – would be setting the agenda. But again, the honest answer is that we simply don’t know. (N.P)

Question: In 2012 in the month of July I was on vacation with my daughter in Greece on the island of Lefkada, for 3 days in the sky there were three unknown objects shaped fireball coming down at high speed, stopped and then made the rounds and stunts above me and my daughter to a supersonic speed that any land vehicle would not have been able to do. It seemed that these fiery objects were playing with us, we were changing the direction of the car and they did the same, when we were still, even these unknown objects were standing. The day we boarded the ship to Italy, these three objects have skirted the ship doing frighten all passengers, rose shooting then descended on us giving impression that they would hit the ship, then they went racing .. .. All this and lasted about two hours, after which they stopped on the ship for about 5 minutes and then departed rocket disappearing from sight in about 10 seconds. All passengers were terrified, see 3 balls of fire that turned around the ship giving impression that at any moment to another we would hit and sunk … but then are splashed up and disappeared…. I do not understand why these 3 fireballs have done all this, because we have passed two hours of terror on the ship if he showed that they did not want to hurt any of us??? In your opinion what is the point to do all this and then fly out after letting us take a great fear??? (Nina Rubino)

Answer: The old intelligence analyst assessment “interesting if true” applies to Bashar and indeed to all channelled information. If any of this is to be accepted as true, we’d need some proof, e.g. a solution to some unsolved mathematics problems such as the P versus NP problem. Until and unless Bashar can come up with a solution, there’s no need to take any of these people seriously.(N.P)

Question: Nick in your opinion, do you personally think the triangles are man-made? We have seen them twice and we can’t explain how they could be…?(Melissa Sanders Giger)

Answer: Some delta and triangular-shaped UFOs are almost certainly secret prototype aircraft and drones, but as for the rest, we don’t know. As I often say, the believers only have to be right once. (N.P)

1)      Is it really possible a shadow organization within our government keeps information from the president…..Truman didn’t know about the A bomb until he was president …..If so, who really controls our government?

I’m sceptical about this, because the President – as Commander-in-Chief – is the only person authorised to launch military action. So it’s difficult to envisage any circumstances under which the President wouldn’t be briefed on all this. (N.P)

2) What if these visitors are really time travelling humans, coming back to research ancient history? I personally believe many of the sightings are just that….not aliens from another planet just humans from the future. …?
Do they have any thoughts on this?

Answer: Theories about time travel are just as valid as those about extraterrestrials, or other dimensions. The truth is, we simply don’t know.(N.P)

Question: What’s taking so long for them to make contact with everyone not just random people?? (Frank Camarillo)

Answer: We should try to avoid taking an anthropocentric view of the situation, and realise that not everything revolves around us. If we’re being visited by extraterrestrial civilisations, the chances are that they’re considerably more advanced than us, so they’ll be setting the agenda and the timescale – not us. (N.P)

Question: To Nick Pope: in your opinion, do you think disclosure could happen this year or will there be a false flag event? I feel the more we are coming to disclosure the more the powers that be are creating wars as diversion (Nile Jordan)

Answer: I’m not a believer in false flag events (I don’t believe in conspiracy theories about 9/11) and as for disclosure, as I’ve said before, it depends what there is to disclose. (N.P)

Question: I would like information on the rumours of an Earth/ alien solar system space fleet rumoured to exist with a list of non-terrestrial officers also, any information on alien bases on the moon.(Michael Howard)

Answer: Such claims are based on the work of computer hacker Gary McKinnon, and I’m afraid I can’t evaluate of this. Again, “interesting if true”. (N.P)

Answer: There have certainly been some bizarre sightings in this area, but whether there’s a single explanation, I’m afraid I don’t know.(N.P)

Question: After 2 white light UFO sightings, I have seen a weird bat like creature appear out of an area of light in the night sky. Was that a mothman? Are mothmen connected to ufos? Do you believe in the Mothman myth?? (Rosalie Dunstan)

Answer: This sounds fascinating, but I’m not an expert on the Mothman theories, so I’m afraid I can’t offer any definitive explanation as to what you saw. (N.P)

Question: Why UFO are being sighted all over the world? Is the time near for them to be openly visible to human and why only now? (Tairain Dyaran)

Answer: I think the UFO phenomenon has always been global, but as to whether or not it’s time for them to be openly visible, I’m afraid that I don’t know. (N.P)

Question: I recently saw what I took for a UFO (I am thinking black triangle) but the light patterns were different that those previously reported. I am wondering with the amount of evidence available as to different shapes of craft how much evidence is there about different lighting patterns? (Richard Buie)

Answer: I think that for any meaningful trend analysis, as opposed to examining UFO sightings on a case by case basis, one would have to engage with an organisation such as U.I.P or MUFON. (N.P)

Question: Has there ever been an instance when a missing person returned from an abduction exactly the same way they were last seen or returned in a different country? (Tracer Hamilton)

Answer: Not as far as I’m aware. The best such case that I’m familiar with is that of Travis Walton, who had a UFO encounter and was declared missing, only to appear some days later and some considerable distance away. (N.P)

Question: We keep hearing dates for disclosure, Is there a very probable date or do we really don’t know??? (Johnny Styles )

Answer: We don’t really know, though I’m tempted to say that when the Square Kilometre Radio telescope is fully operational, towards the end of the 2020s, we’ll be able to detect any other civilisations in this small corner of our Milky Way galaxy. (N.P)

Question: Can you ask Nick if he thinks activity has spiked all over the world or is it that more people are aware and now there is a camera in most people’s hands 24/7 making documentation easy? Just interested to see if what we are seeing is record sightings. (Hashim Yilmaz)

Answer: I think it’s a chicken and egg situation. We don’t really know whether or not sightings have increased, or whether it’s simply that because more people carry cell phones capable of taking photos or videos, we have more data.(N.P)

Answer: I suspect that RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge are inherently more interesting than Rendlesham Forest.

1) How many alien races are you aware of that are visiting us at this point?

Answer: We have no idea. The answer could be none, or it could be an incredibly high number.

2) Do you believe there may be one or more alien races that are actually protecting us and trying to help us and vice versa, do you believe one or more alien races have bad intentions towards us and want to harm us?

Answer: Again, sadly, I have no idea. I think we should try to get away from anthropocentric ideas of good aliens and bad aliens. The truth may be far more subtle and complex.

3) Why do you think aliens are interested in us? Do you believe they created us and have always been around (which is what I believe)? Or do you think we are in some way unique and special compared to other planets out there and they are probably just fascinated by us?

Answer: If we’re being observed by intelligent extraterrestrials, I suspect they’d be interested in us for the same reason that we’d be interested in them. They’d be scientists, explorers and anthropologists.

There’s a planet between Mars and Jupiter you’ve probably never heard of…

This animation showcases a series of images NASA's Dawn spacecraft took on approach to Ceres on Feb. 4, 2015 at a distance of about 90,000 miles (145,000 kilometers) from the dwarf planet.

Way out beyond Mars, but before you get to Jupiter, is a planet.

You read that right. There’s a planet between Mars and Jupiter.

You may not have heard of it, but it was discovered in 1801 — 129 years before Pluto. It originally was called a planet, then later an asteroid and now it’s called a dwarf planet.

Its name is Ceres (pronounced like series) and you’ll likely be hearing a lot more about it in the coming weeks.

Ceres is one of five named dwarf planets recognized by NASA and the International Astronomical Union (IAU). The other four are Eris, Pluto, Makemake and Haumea.

But Ceres is the first of these worlds to get a visitor from Earth: NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is arriving on March 6.

“Ceres is a ‘planet’ that you’ve probably never heard of,” said Robert Mase, Dawn project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Ceres may be considered a dwarf planet, but it’s “the giant of the main asteroid belt,” Dr. Marc Rayman, chief engineer and mission director of the Dawn mission, told CNN. “It is not only the largest object between Mars and Jupiter, it is the largest object between the sun and Pluto that a spacecraft has not yet visited.”

“We are tremendously excited,” Rayman said. “We have guided this robotic probe for well over seven years on an interplanetary journey of more than 3 billion miles. Along the way we sailed past Mars. We spent 14 months orbiting and scrutinizing the giant protoplanet Vesta. … Now, finally, we are on the verge of conducting the first exploration ever of the first dwarf planet.”

New images from Dawn, taken when the probe was about 52,000 miles (83,000 kilometers) from Ceres, show craters and what NASA calls mysterious bright spots. Rayman said its surface is pretty beaten up and that the craters that are “scars from life in the rough and tumble asteroid belt.”

Why study a beaten-up space rock? Rayman said because it’s a survivor — and a mysterious one. Made up of rock and ice, Ceres may even have liquid water deep beneath its surface — “perhaps as ponds or lakes or even oceans,” Rayman said.

He said Ceres “appears to have been in the process of growing to become a full-sized planet when Jupiter terminated its growth nearly 4.6 billion years ago.”

So by studying Ceres, scientists learn more about how the rest of the solar system formed. And he said, we should study Ceres because it’s there — and we need to understand the universe we live in. “We should study it because we hunger for knowledge and understanding. Grand undertakings like this nurture our spirit,” Rayman said.

Rayman said that if you had learned about the solar system 200 years ago, “you would have learned that Ceres was a planet, just as people who learned about the solar system in more recent generations learned that Pluto is.”

Speaking of Pluto, the most famous of the dwarf planets gets its own visitor in July. The New Horizons spacecraft is closing in for a flyby of Pluto and its moons.

This talk of planets and dwarf planets is still a little confusing, so here’s the most recent tally: NASA currently recognizes eight planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune, and the five named dwarf planets we listed earlier.

But a sixth possible dwarf planet already is on NASA’s watch list.

Called 2012 VP113, it’s believed to be one of the most distant objects in our solar system. On its Solar System Exploration website, NASA says the object was nicknamed “Biden” after Vice President Joseph Biden because of the VP in its initial designation. It will be up to the IAU to decide whether i2012 VP113 is a dwarf planet and whether it gets an official name.

But expect the numbers for planets in our solar system to keep changing. Mike Brown, the CalTech astronomy professor who helped discover dwarf planet Eris and who takes responsibility for killing off Pluto as a full-fledged planet, has his own tally listing more than 360 possible dwarf planets. And NASA has said there may be many more dwarf planets that we haven’t found yet.

So Ceres, and its cousins, may soon outnumber the traditional planets you learned about in grade school.

You can believe your eyes: NASA to test flying saucer

KAUA’I, Hawaii — Keep an eye on the skies over Hawaii on Wednesday. If all goes to plan, NASA will be testing out a saucer-shaped craft that could hold the key to a future human mission to Mars.

The test flight was originally scheduled for Tuesday but was postponed because of unfavorable ocean conditions. The craft will splash down in the sea, so operators need to be able to recover it safely.

If conditions are suitable Wednesday, an enormous balloon will lift the test vehicle carrying the disc-like Low-Density Supersonic Decelerator, or LDSD, to a height of 120,000 feet, or more than 20 miles (32 kilometers), above Earth.

Then, mission controllers will set the LDSD free to fire its rockets and try out the centerpiece of the test: a giant supersonic parachute, measuring 100 feet (30 meters) across.

For those on the ground, live video will be relayed from four cameras aboard the pioneering saucer-shaped craft.

“You get to see all the same video I do, at the same time I do,” Mark Adler, project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, said in an online news release.

“This year’s test is centered on how our newly designed supersonic parachute will perform. We think we have a great design ready for the challenge, but the proof is in the pudding and the pudding will be made live for everyone to see.”

Updating decades-old technology

Last year, when the LDSD was tested for the first time — also launched from the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Missile Range facility in Kauai, Hawaii — the deployment of the parachute was the only fly in the ointment, when it didn’t inflate as expected.

This time around, a new design is being tested: the Supersonic Ringsail parachute, which NASA says is the largest supersonic parachute ever tested for use on Mars.

Current technology for decelerating from high speeds during reentry into the atmosphere to the final stages of landing on Mars dates back to NASA’s Viking Program, which put two landers on the Martian surface in 1976.

The basic Viking parachute design has been used ever since. It was successfully used again in 2012 to deliver the rover Curiosity to Mars.

NASA will need new and improved landing technologies to handle the larger spaceships of tomorrow and land them on rocky surfaces, as well as at higher altitudes.

Atmospheric drag

NASA scientists hope this saucer-shaped craft could be the key.

“As NASA plans ambitious robotic science missions to Mars, laying the groundwork for even more complex human expeditions to come, the spacecraft needed to land safely on the Red Planet’s surface will become larger and heavier in order to accommodate explorers’ extended stays on the Martian surface,” the agency’s website said.

This means the supersonic parachute will have its work cut out to create sufficient atmospheric drag to slow the vehicles down so they can be landed safely. Using drag for deceleration means precious fuel can be saved for landing maneuvers.

A third test flight for the LDSD is scheduled for the summer of 2016.

Huge Underwater Pyramid Found Near Portugal

Further investigations are beginning to point to the possibility of an underwater volcanic hill based on more recent scans.[3] More information should come to the surface. Some believe this new explanation may be a cover up but that position is currently based on a belief only.

Portuguese news reported the discovery of a very large under water pyramid first discovered by Diocleciano Silva between the islands of São Miguel and Terceira in the Azores of Portugal. According to claims, the structure is said to be perfectly squared and oriented by the cardinal points. Current estimates obtained using GPS digital technology put the height at 60 meters with a base of 8000 square meters. The Portuguese Hydrographic Institute of the Navy currently has the job of analyzing the data to determine whether or not the structure is man-made.

“The pyramid is perfectly shaped and apparently oriented by the cardinal points,” Silva told Diário Insular, the local newspaper.

The pyramid was found in an area of the mid-Atlantic that has been underwater for about 20,000 years. Considering this is around the time of the last ice age where glaciation was melting from its peak 2000 years prior, whatever civilization, human or not, that was around before the ice age, could be responsible for building the pyramid. While the Portuguese Navy still hasn’t determined the origins, many might question why this hasn’t been first reported on sooner than late 2012. Certainly the NOAA who studies volcanic activity in the area of the pyramid would have discovered the pyramid through sonar imaging and so forth since the area is heavily studied due to volcanic activity. Either the NOAA hasn’t yet come across it, they are hiding what they have found, or the pyramid doesn’t exist. The last theory does not seem to be likely given the authenticity of the find.

To further support the idea that this pyramid could have been built by different civilizations, archeologists from the Portuguese Association of Archaeological Research have recently discovered evidence on Pico island that suggests their belief that humans existed in the Azores region before the arrival of the Portuguese thousands of years ago. As of today, there is still no explanation for who created the rock art found on the islands. Was the pyramid built by whatever civilization existed prior to the Portuguese? Is it possibly not even man-made?

The Azores are an interesting region as they are a chain of nine volcanic islands in three main groups that are roughly 930 miles west of Lisbon. They are all situated around the fault lines between the North American, Eurasian and African tectonic plates. An interesting place to have a pyramid given the energetic qualities often associated with pyramids.

This video discusses some interesting bits of information that explore the authenticity of the story and the possible location visually using some maps. It is important to note that exact coordinates of the pyramid have not been released. He believes that there may be a discovery of 2 more pyramids in the area as images suggest there could be a design link to that of the pyramids built in Egypt.

MARS 'Blue lagoons' op de rode planeet? Dat lijkt zo op deze beelden van ESA van Mars. Maar de wetenschappelijke verklaring toont iets helemaal anders aan. De blauwe vlekken zouden te maken hebben met winden tot 100 km/uur die Mars teisteren en het landschap er mee vorm geven.

Mooi blauw water? Niet volgens ESA. De wetenschap houdt het bij een optische illusie. Gigantische stofstormen - die dagen of weken kunnen duren en met winden tot 100 km/uur - droppen donkere, vulkanische, basaltrijke materie over heel de planeet. Lagen van donkerdere stof van vulkanen zetten zich vast in de kraters van Mars. Na verloop van tijd is er genoeg van dat stof verzameld om een blauwige kleur te tonen. Dat is wat we zien.

Ook op onze eigen planeet bepalen winden door de tijden heen overigens mee de vorm van het landschap, van rotsen, van duinen.

Op de foto hieronder zie je de gevolgen van een veel recentere storm, die vulkanische stof en as in een krater op Mars blaast. Je kan op dit beeld bijna de kracht van de storm voelen.

The difference between asteroids and meteorites

Asteroids, meteors, and meteorites … It might be fair to say these rocks from space inspire both wonder and fear among us Earthlings. But knowing a bit more about each of them and how they differ may eliminate some potential misgivings. While all these rocks originate from space, they have different names depending their location—i.e. whether they are hurtling through space or hurtling through the atmosphere and impacting Earth's surface.

In simplest terms here are the definitions:

• Asteroid: a large rocky body in space, in orbit around the Sun.
• Meteoroid: much smaller rocks or particles in orbit around the Sun.
• Meteor: If a meteoroid enters the Earth's atmosphere and vaporizes, it becomes a meteor, which is often called a shooting star.
• Meteorite: If a small asteroid or large meteoroid survives its fiery passage through the Earth's atmosphere and lands on Earth's surface, it is then called a meteorite.

Another related term is bolide, which is a very bright meteor that often explodes in the atmosphere. This can also be called a fireball.

Let's look at each in more detail:

Asteroids

Asteroids are found mainly in the asteroid belt, between Mars and Jupiter. Sometimes their orbits get perturbed or altered and some asteroids end up coming closer to the Sun, and therefore closer to Earth. In addition to the asteroid belt, however, there have been recent discussions among astronomers about the potential existence of large number asteroids in the Kuiper Belt and Oort Cloud.

Asteroids are sometimes referred to as minor planets or planetoids, but in general, they are rocky bodies that do not have an atmosphere. However, a few have their own moons. Our solar system contains millions of asteroids, many of which are thought to be the shattered remnants of planetesimals – bodies within the young Sun's solar nebula that never grew large enough to become planets.

The size of what classifies as an asteroid is not extremely well defined, as an asteroid can range from a few meters wide – like a boulder—to objects that are hundreds of kilometers in diameter. The largest asteroid is asteroid Ceres at about 952 km (592 miles) in diameter, and Ceres is so large that it is also categorized as a dwarf planet.

Most asteroids are made of rock, but as we explore and learn more about them we know that some are composed of metal, mostly nickel and iron. According to NASA, a small portion of the asteroid population may be burned-out comets whose ices have evaporated away and been blown off into space. Recently, astronomers have discovered some asteroids that mimic comets in that gas and dust are emanating from them, and as we mentioned earlier, there appears to be a large number of bodies with asteroid-like compositions but comet-like orbits.

How Often Do Asteroids Hit Earth?

While we know that some asteroids pass very close to Earth's orbit around the Sun, we've been lucky in the history of humanity that we haven't had a large asteroid hit Earth in the past several thousand years. It wasn't until satellite imagery of Earth became widely available that scientists were able to see evidence of past asteroid impacts.

One of the more famous impact craters on Earth is Meteor Crater in Arizona in the US, which was made by an impact about 50,000 years ago. But there are about 175 known impact around the world – a few are quite large, like Vredefort Crater in South Africa which has an estimated radius of 190 kilometers (118 miles), making it the world's largest known impact structure on Earth. Another notable impact site is off the coast of the Yucatan Peninsula in Mexico, and is believed to be a record of the event that led to the extinction of the dinosaurs 65 million years ago.

These days, asteroid impacts are less of a threat. NASA estimates that about once a year an automobile-sized asteroid enters Earth's atmosphere, creates an impressive fireball and disintegrates before ever reaching the surface. Studies of Earth's history indicate that about once every 5,000 years or so on average an object the size of a football field hits Earth and causes significant damage. Once every few million years on average an object large enough to cause regional or global disaster impacts Earth.

Meteors, Meteoroids and Bolides

Space debris smaller than an asteroid are called meteoroids. A meteoroid is a piece of interplanetary matter that is smaller than an asteroid and frequently are only millimeters in size. Most meteoroids that enter the Earth's atmosphere are so small that they vaporize completely and never reach the planet's surface. When they burn up during their descent, they create a beautiful trail of light known as a meteor, sometimes called a shooting star.

Mostly these are harmless, but larger meteors that explode in the atmosphere – sometimes called bolides—can create shockwaves, which can cause problems. In February 2013 a meteor that exploded over Chelyabinsk, Russia shattered windows with its air blast. This meteoroid or bolide was estimated to be 18 meters (59 feet) in diameter. In 1908, a rocky meteoroid less than 100 meters in diameter is believed to have entered the atmosphere over the Tunguska region of Siberia in 1908 and the resulting shockwave knocked down trees for hundreds of square kilometers.

How often is Earth hit by meteroids?

Because of the Chelyabinsk meteor in 2013, astronomers have acquired more information about the frequency of larger meteors that hit Earth, and there is now a growing consensus that the Earth gets hit by bigger space rocks more often than we previously thought.

The B612 foundation says that a Hiroshima-scale asteroid explosion happens in our atmosphere on average once a year, but many are not detected because they explode high in the atmosphere, or because most of the Earth's surface is water and even a large percentage of land is fairly uninhabited by humans.

Estimates vary of how much cosmic dust and meteors enter Earth's atmosphere each day, but range anywhere from 5 to 300 metric tons. Satellite observations suggest that 100-300 metric tons of cosmic dust enter the atmosphere each day. This figure comes from the rate of accumulation in polar ice cores and deep-sea sediments of rare elements linked to cosmic dust, such as iridium and osmium.

But other measurements – which includes meteor radar observations, laser observations and measurements by high altitude aircraft—indicate that the input could be as low as 5 metric ton per day.

Meteorite

If any part of a meteoroid survives the fall through the atmosphere and lands on Earth, it is called a meteorite. Although the vast majority of meteorites are very small, their size can range from about a fraction of a gram (the size of a pebble) to 100 kilograms (220 lbs) or more (the size of a huge, life-destroying boulder). Meteorites smaller than 2mm are classified as micrometeorites.

Meteorites have traditionally been divided into three broad categories, depending on their structure, chemical and isotopic composition and mineralogy. Stony meteorites are rocks, mainly composed of silicate minerals; iron meteorites that are largely composed of metallic iron-nickel; and, stony-iron meteorites that contain large amounts of both metallic and rocky material.

Meteorites have also been found on the moon and Mars and conversely, scientists have traced the origination of the meteorites found here on Earth to four other bodies: the moon, Mars, the asteroid 4 Vesta, and the comet Wild 2. Meteorites are the source of a great deal of the knowledge that we have have about the composition of other celestial bodies.

How Often Do Meteorites Hit Earth?

According to the Planetary Science Institute, it is estimated that probably 500 meteorites reach the surface of the Earth each year, but less than 10 are recovered. This is because most fall into water (oceans, seas or lakes) or land in remote areas of the Earth that are not accessible, or are just not seen to fall.

Summary

In short, the difference between asteroids and meteors all comes down to a question of location. Asteroids are always found in space. Once it enters an atmosphere, it becomes a meteor, and then a meteorite after it hits the ground. Each are made of the same basic materials – minerals and rock – and each originated in space. The main difference is where they are when they are being observed.

NASA Starts Testing Its New Mars Lander

NASA has started testing its new Mars lander, which is scheduled to leave for the red planet in March of 2016. It’s big, about the size of a car, and a-roving it will not go. It will stay where it lands because it has a very specific purpose. In terms of what we know about Mars, we have, quite literally, just scratched the surface, leaving us guessing about some very fundamental questions about the red planet. What is Mars’ interior structure? What is the nature of the core? Does Mars have a crust with liquid magma beneath it? And even more fundamentally, how is Mars geologically like Earth and different? The new lander called InSight will drill into the martian surface in an attempt to fill in some of these crucial gaps in our knowledge.

If you’ve been following stories about NASA over the past few years, you may have noticed that almost every name they give to one of their missions or vehicles stands for something, so, here it is for InSight: Interior Exploration using Seismic Investigations, Geodesy and Heat Transport. Geodesy? A bit of shoehornery there, NASA? Well, in any case, InSight will, in fact, be doing some very important science. Here’s the thing: The only planet that we’re really drilled into so far is the Earth. So when InSight begins drilling into Mars and sending back data, in addition to providing crucial information about Mars, it will also, for the first time in history, give us something to compare the Earth to.

The current round of tests will put InSight through its paces to ensure that it can withstand  the trip to Mars, the landing there, and the harsh conditions the lander will face on the martian surface, all while remaining operational. NASA engineers want to make sure that any faults with the craft are identified and fixed while it’s still here on Earth. If anything goes wrong with InSight once it’s on its way, the only possibility of a repair man coming by will be many years in the future, when the first manned missions arrive on Mars, in the the 2030’s, or if either of the two private ventures to colonize Mars about ten years earlier actually happen.

This environmental testing on InSight will take place at Lockheed Martin's Space Systems facility near Denver. There InSight will be subjected to the sorts of extreme temperatures and vacuum conditions the lander will be exposed to during its journey through  interplanetary space. Once InSight passes this set of tests, it will be subjected to several other batteries of them over the next seven months, including vibrations to simulate launch conditions, and checking for electronic interference between different parts of the spacecraft. The final set of tests will include a second thermal vacuum test to simulate the conditions the spacecraft will be exposed to on the Martian surface.

"It's great to see the spacecraft put together in its launch configuration," says Tom Hoffman, InSight Project Manager at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California. "Many teams from across the globe have worked long hours to get their elements of the system delivered for these tests. There still remains much work to do before we are ready for launch, but it is fantastic to get to this critical milestone.”

Ultraviolet study reveals surprises in comet coma

Rosetta's continued close study of Comet 67P/Churyumov–Gerasimenko has revealed an unexpected process at work, causing the rapid breakup of water and carbon dioxide molecules spewing from the comet’s surface.                                

ESA's Rosetta mission arrived at the comet in August last year. Since then, it has been orbiting or flying past the comet at distances from as far as several hundred kilometres down to as little as 8 km. While doing so, it has been collecting data on every aspect of the comet’s environment with its suite of 11 science instruments.

One instrument, the Alice spectrograph provided by NASA, has been examining the chemical composition of the comet's atmosphere, or coma, at far-ultraviolet wavelengths.

At these wavelengths, Alice allows scientists to detect some of the most abundant elements in the Universe such as hydrogen, oxygen, carbon and nitrogen. The spectrograph splits the comet's light into its various colours – its spectrum – from which scientists can identify the chemical composition of the coma gases.

In a paper accepted for publication in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics, scientists report the detections made by Alice from Rosetta’s first four months at the comet, when the spacecraft was between 10 km and 80 km from the centre of the comet nucleus.

For this study, the team focused on the nature of 'plumes' of water and carbon dioxide gas erupting from the comet's surface, triggered by the warmth of the Sun. To do so, they looked at the emission from hydrogen and oxygen atoms resulting from broken water molecules, and similarly carbon atoms from carbon dioxide molecules, close to the comet nucleus.

They discovered that the molecules seem to be broken up in a two-step process.

First, an ultraviolet photon from the Sun hits a water molecule in the comet’s coma and ionises it, knocking out an energetic electron. This electron then hits another water molecule in the coma, breaking it apart into two hydrogen atoms and one oxygen, and energising them in the process. These atoms then emit ultraviolet light that is detected at characteristic wavelengths by Alice.

Similarly, it is the impact of an electron with a carbon dioxide molecule that results in its break-up into atoms and the observed carbon emissions.

"Analysis of the relative intensities of observed atomic emissions allows us to determine that we are directly observing the ‘parent’ molecules that are being broken up by electrons in the immediate vicinity, about 1 km, of the comet’s nucleus where they are being produced," says Paul Feldman, professor of physics and astronomy at the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, and lead author of the paper discussing the results.

By comparison, from Earth or from Earth-orbiting space observatories such as the Hubble Space Telescope, the atomic constituents of comets can only be seen after their parent molecules, such as water and carbon dioxide, have been broken up by sunlight, hundreds to thousands of kilometres away from the nucleus of the comet.

"The discovery we’re reporting is quite unexpected," says Alice Principal Investigator Alan Stern, an associate vice-president in the Space Science and Engineering Division of the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI).

"It shows us the value of going to comets to observe them up close, since this discovery simply could not have been made from Earth or Earth orbit with any existing or planned observatory. And, it is fundamentally transforming our knowledge of comets."

"By looking at the emission from hydrogen and oxygen atoms broken from the water molecules, we also can actually trace the location and structure of water plumes from the surface of the comet," adds co-author Joel Parker, an assistant director in SwRI’s Space Science and Engineering Division in Boulder, Colorado.

The team likens the break-up of the molecules to the process that has been proposed for the plumes on Jupiter’s icy moon Europa, except that the electrons at the comet are produced by solar photons, while the electrons at Europa come from Jupiter’s magnetosphere.

The results from Alice are supported by data obtained by other Rosetta instruments, in particular MIRO, ROSINA and VIRTIS, which are able to study the abundance of different coma constituents and their variation over time, and particle detecting instruments like RPC-IES.

"These early results from Alice demonstrate how important it is to study a comet at different wavelengths and with different techniques, in order to probe various aspects of the comet environment," says ESA’s Rosetta project scientist Matt Taylor.

"We’re actively watching how the comet evolves as it moves closer to the Sun along its orbit towards perihelion in August, seeing how the plumes become more active due to solar heating, and studying the effects of the comet’s interaction with the solar wind."

Hubble observes chaotic dance of Pluto's moons

In a new study, scientists have gathered all available NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope data on the four outer moons of Pluto to analyse the system in more depth than ever before. The observations show that at least two of Pluto's moons are not neatly rotating on their axes but are in chaotic rotation while orbiting around Pluto and its companion Charon. The study also hints that one of the moons has a mysterious jet-black colouring. These surprising results appear in the 4 June issue of the journal Nature.                                

Almost every moon in the Solar System, including our Moon, rotates on its axis at the same speed as it orbits its parent body. It is for this reason that we always see the same side of the Moon facing us on Earth. On Pluto, however, astronomers have now discovered that there are no hidden sides to its moons.

In a surprising new study, it has been found that two of Pluto's moons, Nix and Hydra, are in a chaotic rotation. This means that an observer on Pluto would not see the same face of the moons from one night to the next. For visitors on the moons themselves, things would get even more confusing, as every day would be a different length to the one that preceded it.

The other two moons studied, Kerberos and Styx, will likely be found to be chaotic too, pending further study.

"Prior to the Hubble observations, nobody appreciated the intricate dynamics of the Pluto system," explains Mark Showalter of the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute in California, USA, main author of the study.

The chaotic motion of the moons is caused by the system's two central bodies, Pluto and Charon [1].

"These two bodies whirl around each other rapidly, causing the gravitational forces that they exert on the small nearby moons to change constantly," explains Doug Hamilton, co-author of the study. "Being subject to such varying gravitational forces makes the rotation of Pluto's moons very unpredictable. The chaos in their rotation is further accentuated by the fact that these moons are not neat and round, but are actually shaped like rugby balls!"

The movement of the moons in the Pluto–Charon system offers valuable insights into how planets orbiting a double star might behave. "We are learning that chaos may be a common trait of binary systems," Hamilton continues. "It might even have consequences for life on planets orbiting binary stars."

Clues to the Pluto system chaos first came when astronomers measured variations in the light reflected off of the two small moons. Looking at images taken by Hubble between 2005 and 2012, the brightness was found to change unpredictably — instead of following a regular cycle — in a way that could only be explained by chaotic movement.

These images also showed that the moon Kerberos is charcoal-black in colour, a stark contrast to the bright white of the other moons. It was predicted that pollution from dust blasted off the satellites by meteorite impacts would coat the moons, giving their surfaces a homogenous look, but why Kerberos is black is a mystery.

The chaotic rotation of the moons was not the only surprise that arose from the study; Hubble's monitoring also revealed a connection between the orbits of the three moons Nix, Styx, and Hydra.

"Their motion is tied together in a way similar to that of three of Jupiter’s large moons," noted Doug Hamilton of the University of Maryland, co-author of the study. "If you were sitting on Nix, you would see Styx go around Pluto twice every time Hydra goes around three times."

The chaotic movements found in this fascinating system do not necessarily mean that it is on the brink of flying apart. More studies are needed to determine the long-term fate of the Pluto system.

The researchers agree that a combination of monitoring data from Hubble, a close-up look from NASA's New Horizons space probe, which flies by the system in July 2015 [2], and, eventually, observations with the NASA/ESA/CSA James Webb Space Telescope will help to settle some of the many mysteries of the Pluto–Charon system.

"Pluto will continue to surprise us when New Horizons flies past it in July," Showalter said. "Our work with Hubble just gives us a foretaste of what's in store."

[1] Due to Charon's large size, Pluto and Charon orbit about a common centre of gravity that is located in the space between the bodies. Our moon has one eightieth of Earth's mass, whereas Charon has one eighth of Pluto's mass.

[2] NASA's New Horizons space probe was launched in 2006 to study Pluto, its moons, and other Kuiper belt objects. It will fly past the Pluto-Charon system on 14 July 2015 and will produce detailed surface maps of Pluto and all of its moons.

These little moons, measuring just tens of miles across, were found as part of several Hubble searches for moons and rings to characterize the system in preparation for the New Horizons spacecraft flyby.

Australische studente laat als eerste zien dat er gigantische plasmabuizen boven de aarde zweven

Astronomen hebben voor het eerst bewijs gevonden voor het bestaan van buisvormige plasmastructuren in de onderste lagen van de magnetosfeer. “Wetenschappers dachten al meer dan 60 jaar dat deze structuren bestonden en wij hebben nu het eerste bewijs dat ze echt bestaan,” zei Cleo Loi van de Universiteit van Sydney.

Het onderzoek van Loi, dat onderdeel was van haar thesis, is gepubliceerd in het tijdschrift Geophysical Research Letters. “De ontdekking van de structuren is belangrijk omdat ze onze navigatiesystemen kunnen verstoren,” zei ze. “We moeten ze dus leren begrijpen.”

Het gebied rond de aarde binnen de invloedssfeer van het magnetisch veld wordt de magnetosfeer genoemd. Het magnetisch veld beschermt ons tegen de straling van de zon en tegen kosmische straling. De magnetosfeer is gevuld met plasma dat ontstaat doordat de atmosfeer wordt geïoniseerd door zonlicht.

De onderste laag van de magnetosfeer is de ionosfeer en erboven bevindt zich de plasmasfeer. Ze bevatten een aantal vreemd gevormde plasmastructuren, waaronder de plasmabuizen. “We hebben ze op 600 kilometer boven de grond waargenomen, in de bovenste laag van de ionosfeer, tot en met de plasmasfeer,” zei Loi. “Daar houdt de neutrale atmosfeer op en gaan we over naar het plasma van de ruimte.”

Experiment bewijst dat realiteit niet bestaat zonder waarneming

Het universum bestaat niet als niemand het nog langer waarneemt. Dat stelt althans een populaire theorie binnen de kwantummechanica. Volgens de theorie verandert de staat van een deeltje zodra het wordt waargenomen.

Wetenschappers hebben een experiment gedaan om te bewijzen dat deze theorie klopt. Volgens de wetten van de kwantummechanica is er geen duidelijke grens tussen de buitenwereld en ons subjectieve bewustzijn.

Als natuurkundigen naar lichtdeeltjes of atomen kijken, zullen hun waarnemingen worden beïnvloed door hun experiment. Om dit te testen hebben natuurkundigen van de Australian National University onlangs het gedachte-experiment van John Wheeler gedaan.

Tijdens het experiment kreeg een bewegend object de keuze om zich als deeltje of als golf te gedragen. Op welk moment maakt het object de keuze? Je zou zeggen dat de staat van het object niet afhankelijk is van de meting die door de wetenschappers wordt gedaan.

De kwantummechanica voorspelt echter dat het gedrag van het object afhangt van de manier waarop het aan het einde van zijn reis wordt gemeten. “Alles draait om de meting,” zei professor Andrew Truscott. “Op kwantumniveau bestaat de realiteit niet als je er niet naar kijkt.”

Als je aanneemt dat een atoom een bepaald pad neemt moet je accepteren dat een toekomstige meting wordt beïnvloed door het verleden van het atoom, aldus Truscott.

“De atomen gingen niet van A naar B,” zei hij. “Pas zodra we aan het einde van de rit een meting deden gedroegen ze zich als golf of als deeltje.” Het onderzoek is verschenen in Nature Physics.
