The Great Alien Debate (Part 1)

This post is one in a series covering, and expanding on, topics in the book The Copernicus Complex (Scientific American/FSG).

The conversation usually goes like this:

Do you think we’re alone in the universe?

Answer A) :

No, absolutely not. It’s a huge universe, we’re not at the center or central in any way and it would be the height of vanity to think humans or Earth are in any way special or significant.

Answer B):

We might be. There’s never been any firm evidence of extraterrestrial life, and our galaxy is old enough that intelligent civilizations should have spread everywhere by now.

I’ve lost track of how many times I’ve had this exchange, with scientists, with family, with random people at pubs and (once) on a heavily forested hillside in Norway with a pair of slightly suspicious looking hikers who had probably just hidden a body somewhere. But the fascinating thing is how we tend to fall into either camp A or camp B, and how strongly we feel about our answers.

There are some caveats. The ‘we’ in the original question is a loaded word. It can be taken to mean ‘technologically intelligent life’ (i.e. as modern humans like to think they are), or it can be taken to mean ‘slime’ – the single-celled microbial life that represents, and has always represented, the bulk of living matter on Earth. If the definition of ‘we’ gets refined using these categories the answers can change a bit. In fact both A and B responses tend to converge to a tepid middle-ground, along the lines of saying that there could be lots of microbial-type life in the cosmos, where it sits slime-like under a favorite rock rather than building pan-galactic empires, while more complex life is either very rare (as in the so-called Rare Earth hypothesis) or never makes it very far into interstellar space (part of an idea called the Great Filter).

This is an awfully unsatisfactory state of affairs, a set of answers that are enormously influenced by our interpretation of events here on Earth. The impasse would be broken if we could detect life with an independent origin elsewhere – either in the solar system or farther beyond – yet that’s a challenge that remains unmet.

It may not stay that way for much longer, between our exploration of Mars and our ambitions for exploring places like comets and icy moons, we really do seem to be getting closer to examining local possibilities for life. And with a stunning array of exoplanet detections, and near-term cataloging of all the best neighboring targets with upcoming missions like TESS, we should be able to apply the next generation of space and ground based ‘super observatories‘ to make crude measurements of the properties of a few potential Earth-analogs. But this is an optimistic overview. In all of these examples, the non-detection of life (whether as fossils or as chemical signatures) is unlikely to eliminate the possibility of life in these places – we simply won’t be able to be that thorough.

So, unfortunately, in ten years time we’re quite likely to still be having the A vs B conversation. On the face of it the compromise solution – that microbial-type life may be common, but life like us isn’t – seems like a decent answer. However, there’s a catch.

Most of this argument hinges on the idea that Earth’s complex-celled, multi-cellular life (everything from nematodes to sheep) only exists because of a sequence of very specific, but low probability, events – including the way and location in which the Earth formed (with water, with plate tectonics), to the presence of a large moon (keeping our spin axis from varying too much), to a chance merger of two equally simple, single-celled, organisms giving rise to complex, eukaryotic life 2 billion years ago. Thus the odds of a planet making creatures like us is vanishingly unlikely, and so this simply can’t have happened in many other places, even in a universe of hundreds of billions of galaxies and nearly 14 billion years old.

Except this is a very specific interpretation of the facts, after the events (a post-hoc analysis). To use an analogy, imagine that you’re woken up one morning by the telephone ringing. You answer and it’s a distant cousin just calling to let you know their new number. Later, as you walk to work, a bus honks at traffic and you glance up to see some of the digits of that phone number on its side. At lunchtime a torn piece of newspaper gets stuck on your foot, with the headline that the national lottery has a record prize draw. Back at work a colleague insists that you participate in a meeting where the word ‘prize’ gets used extensively. On your way home you stop at a newspaper stand and decide to buy a lottery ticket. The next morning you discover that you’ve won the huge jackpot!

What do you make of this? Your natural instinct is to look back at the events of the previous day, marveling at how, step-by-step, you were led to this point by a series of unlikely events. Taken altogether, you reason, this was incredibly improbable, it’s as if the cosmos has singled you out to win!

Yet this isn’t true at all. Someone, somewhere, was going to win the lottery draw. And whoever they were, in whatever circumstances, they would be having the same thoughts. The events of the previous day, week, or year would all take on new meaning in light of the outcome. There would be numbers that they’d seen, choices made, steps taken, random occurrences that appeared to lead up to this point.

Of course some of these events were necessary, but they would also be entirely different if another person had won. The point being that it would be hugely irrational to claim that the chain of events that led to you winning was the only way this could have happened.

All of which circles back to the idea of the ‘rarity’ of life’s trajectory here on Earth. The fact is that our perspective is not unlike the lottery winner’s. It’s easy to look back at 4 billion years of bio-geo-chemical evolution and say that organisms like us were a highly improbable outcome. But in truth we don’t know whether or not that’s actually true, and we can’t know because we have no information about how things have played out across billions of other worlds across the galaxy. In a sense, we have no idea how many other winning lottery tickets are out there in the cosmos, or how they were picked.

And that raises a new question (one that I will tackle in a later post, Part 2), about why we have no idea, and how complex, even technological, life elsewhere could have remained unseen to this point…

DARPA's Implant, A Useful Retrieval Device For Lost Alien Abduction Memories Too?

Brain Implant Will Recover Lost Memories

In just four years, the experimental research wing of the US military, named DARPA, plans to market a medical device that can recover lost memories. Intended for soldiers suffering from brain injury as a result of combat, the device will also work on other neurological disorders like epilepsy and Parkinson's. Lead researcher Michael Kahana, director of the Computational Memory Lab at the University of Pennsylvania, uses modern technological metaphors to describe how memory functions in the brain:

"The memory is like a search engine. In the initial memory encoding, each event has to be tagged. Then in retrieval, you need to be able to search effectively using those tags."

Locating those tags, i.e. finding memories that are no longer accessible to the conscious mind, depends on identifying electrical signals associated with memory encoding and retrieval. Once these signals are found, DARPA's research team will use neural stimulation devices to amplify them, making them easier to detect and bring to the conscious mind. 

While the last two decades have seen massive pharmaceutical investment in drug discovery efforts, industry observers have recently seen those levels fall off dramatically. In the near-term, electrical neuro-modulation devices show greater promise when it comes to treating neurological disorders. 

And while memory retrieval may benefit those with degenerative neurological disorders, devices which disable active memories could be of more use to those suffering from PTSD. In his Big Think interview, NYU bioethics professor Matthew Liao describes such a device:

Remembering Zimbabwe's great alien invasion

Twenty years ago, 62 pupils at Ariel School said they saw an alien spaceship. It's still regarded as one of the most compelling events in UFO history.

                                                        

Tracking down one of the Ariel School experiencers took some doing, but eventually I connected with Sarah* in what she referred to as “a most stubborn old Rhodie [white Rhodesian] bar” in downtown Harare.

Of the more than 110 children and staff who had been at the school, which sits just outside the small agricultural centre of Ruwa, when the aliens landed in 1994, she thought she was probably the only one still in the country.

“Everyone’s fucked off to Canada or the UK,” she said. “Or died.”

When it became clear to her drinking buddies that we were going to talk UFOs, eyes began to roll.

“Christ, Sê, not ET again,” someone muttered.

She ignored him.

“Whaddya wanna know? Actually, it’ll be simpler if I just shoot.  It happened, OK. Sixty-two kids between the ages of about six and 12 saw the aliens land and get out of their little ships. When the kids returned to class they were completely freaked and couldn’t stop nattering about little men who looked a bit like Michael Jackson. The teachers told them to shut up, as teachers are wont to do, and classes proceeded.

“But the next day the school received a bunch of calls from parents wanting to know why their kids were spooked. It got so that the teachers started to freak out, too, and a local UFO expert called Cynthia Hind was invited to speak to everyone. It was via her, I think, that we heard about a famous shrink who was coming from the US to assess the children. What was his name now … Mack, Dr John Mack, who I heard was killed by a drunk driver a few years back.”

Dedicated investigator
Hind, who died in 2000, had publicly acknowledged her own experiences with otherwordly beings in the past, and had dedicated the past decade and a half of her life to investigating UFO sightings on the African continent on behalf of the Mutual UFO Network, and then publishing her findings in the very collectable newsletter, UFO Afrinews.

I had brought along a printout of Issue 11, which I opened on the bar counter before Sarah on Hind’s article “UFO flap in Zimbabwe: Case No 95”. It begins:

“Wednesday, 14th September, 1994, was an exciting night for Southern Africa. Round about 20:50 to 21:05 hours, a pyrotechnic display of some magnificence appeared in the almost clear night skies of this part of the continent.”

Astronomers across the region soon reported that the “pyrotechnic display”, seen as far afield as Zambia and Botswana, had been a meteor shower. Hind, though, recorded receiving dozens of reports of a capsule-like fireball, trailing fire and flanked by two smaller capsules.

She also received several reports of alien sightings around the same time: a young boy and his mother reported a daylight sighting; a trucker who had seen strange beings on the road at night. And then, on September 16, Hind received the report from Ariel School, which she records as Case 96, and describes as “one of the most exciting UFO stories of this or any year”.

Childhood recollection
Hind’s narrative closely mirrors Sarah’s recollection. At 10am, Hind writes, on a hot day, the children were let out for their mid-morning break. They were drawn to an area beyond their playing field of “long grass with thorn and other indigenous bushes, trees growing higgledy-piggledy fashion, and undergrowth thick and heavy enough to hide a child should he venture there”.

The teachers had all entered the staff room for a meeting and the only adult outdoors was the tuckshop mistress, who was soon swamped by children claiming they had seen “three or four objects coming into the rough bush area … disc-like objects coming in along the power lines and finally landing in the rough, among the trees. The children were a little bit afraid, although they were also curious.”

The UFO investigator goes on to record the testimonies of several of the children, who she says represented “a cross-section of Zimbabweans: black African children from several tribes, coloured children (a cross-breeding of black and white), Asian children (whose grandparents were from India) and white children, mostly Zimbabwean-born, but whose parents were either from South Africa or Britain”.

Although they all came from wealthy families (tuition at Ariel School was expensive), Hind believed their cultural differences gave rise to differing interpretations of the event, and that the differences in interpretation made the details that were common to all accounts very compelling indeed.

One of the white students, for example, “thought at first that the little man in black might have been Mrs Stevens’ gardener, but then he saw that the figure had long, straight black hair, ‘not really like [a] black [person’s] hair’, so he realised he had made a mistake!”

Some of the black children thought the short little beings were zvikwambo, or tokoloshes – the evil goblins of Shona and Ndebele folklore – and burst into tears, fearing they would be eaten.

Guy G said: “[I] could see the little man (about a metre tall) was dressed in a black, shiny suit; that he had long black hair and his eyes, which seemed lower on the cheek than our eyes, were large and elongated. The mouth was just a slit and the ears were hardly discernible.”

Parent’s disbelief
Hind’s account ends with her outrage at the disbelief of the children’s’ parents.

“What a frightening indictment of our society that when we are confronted by something we don’t understand, we don’t even attempt to open our minds to the event.”

After reading the article, Sarah ordered another Castle and said: “To be perfectly honest, I don’t think you would be here talking to me now if it wasn’t for that woman [Hind].

“What happened at Ariel was certainly weird, so many kids coming back from break with such similar stories, but I doubt many people would have heard about it if Hind hadn’t made such a fuss. She was the first person to interview the kids, and got the news out to all sorts of important people, Mack included, as if, you know, finally here was some vindication.”

Hind’s descriptions of Mack from this time do indeed suggest she regarded him as something of a redeemer figure, a man who was “not only open-minded and prepared to listen, but an academic of some standing. And one who has risked his credibility with his colleagues to come out and say he believes the experiences of abductees are very real indeed.”

Who was this man, Mack, whose interest transformed a local curiosity into a study that continues to animate UFO chat rooms to this day?

I’d been told a little of his biography by a relative of mine called Nicky Carter, who after hearing of the incident from a brother at Ariel School had been the first media respondent, covering it as a producer for an SABC current affairs program called Agenda.

Prize-winning author
Dr John E Mack, she said, had been a Pulitzer prize-winning author (awarded for his 1977 study of Lawrence of Arabia, A Prince of Our Disorder: The Life of TE Lawrence) and a professor of psychiatry at the Harvard Medical School.

Highly regarded, Mack had nevertheless been having a tough year professionally when Carter met him. His problems stemmed from his interest in the alien abduction phenomenon, which he had begun researching in the early 1990s and about which he had written the bestselling book Abduction: Human Encounters with Aliens.

Carter sent me Mack’s own account of the fallout. “In the spring of 1994,” he writes in his second book on the alien abduction phenomenon, Passport to the Cosmos, “one of the deans at the Harvard Medical School handed me a letter that called for the establishment of a small committee to investigate my work [on the alien abduction phenomenon].

Dr John Mack was a Pulitzer prize-winner who came under fire for his UFO research.

“After explaining vaguely that ‘concerns’ had been expressed to the university about what I was doing (although he told of no specific complaint, nor was any offered in the letter), he added pleasantly – for he had been a friend and colleague – that I would not have gotten into trouble if I had not suggested in the book [Abduction] that my findings might require a change in our view of reality, rather than saying that I had found a new psychiatric syndrome whose cause had not yet been established.”

Another peer, Paul McHugh of Johns Hopkins Medical School, was less delicate, describing Mack in the Los Angeles Times as “a brilliant fellow who occasionally loses it, and this time he’s lost it big time”.

Mack’s standard rejoinder was to point out that, although alien encounters were “not possible according to the science of the times”, they might nevertheless “turn out to be real in some way that we do not yet understand … as the bizarre reports of rocks we now call meteorites falling from the sky seemed [impossible] in the 18th century.”

Attempted ouster
By mid-1994 Mack had overcome attempts at an ouster by some of his Harvard colleagues, and was planning to expand the scope of his research to include African alien encounters and abductions. A flight was booked to South Africa, where Mack had organised to meet with experiencers such as the well-known traditional healer and author Credo Mutwa (who was to tell Mack, according to Carter, who covered the interview for the SABC, about his rape by a golden-haired, blue-eyed alien female.)

As he was preparing to depart for Africa, news of the Ariel School encounter broke, and Mack adjusted his travel plans accordingly.

These were the extraordinary coincidences by which the world’s most newsworthy psychiatrist happened to land, meteorlike, in Zimbabwe. Hind recorded how he appeared on “two radio shows and one TV programme” before driving the 35km from Harare to Ruwa.

“These days were filled with exciting revelations for him,” wrote Hind.

“John was able to get through to parents and teachers and convince them that, even if they did not believe the children, it was counterproductive to accuse them of lying.”

What interested Mack was how the children’s accounts connected to things he’d been told by other of his “experiencer participants”, namely that the aliens had communicated an urgent environmental message.

In Passport to the Cosmos, Mack records that after some years of research he was “astonished to discover … in case after case, powerful messages about the human threat to the Earth’s ecology were being conveyed to the experiencers in vivid, unmistakable words and images”. He personally deemed it “quite possible that the protection of the Earth’s life is at the heart of the abduction phenomenon”.

Original interviews
Snippets of Mack’s interviews with the children can still be found on YouTube today. A fifth-grader called Francis tells the gentle-eyed psychiatrist he was warned “about something that’s going to happen,” and that “pollution mustn’t be”. Eleven-year-old Emma says; “I think they want people to know that we’re actually making harm on this world and we mustn’t get too technologed [sic].”

I cued up one of the clips on my phone for Sarah, but she waved it away.

“I can’t, I can’t … no, I’ve had too much of my own experience to want to relive somebody else’s.”

After a long draw on her beer she said: “They weren’t wrong, though, about the environmental shit, were they? If you go out there now you’ll see the Miombo forests have disappeared for firewood.”

But during my first visit to the district, what had struck me was not the state of the forests but the fact that Ariel School had continued to grow in pupil numbers, and looked to be prospering.

The khaki uniforms, the red floppy hats, the break-time chirring – it all matched the YouTube clips, only there were no longer any white students, the white farming families having all moved elsewhere as a result of the government’s radical land reform policies. The “rough area” beyond the playground had been stumped and mown into a second sports field, dusty for want of rain. I asked a few teachers I bumped into about the events of 1994, but it seemed that aspect of the school’s history had left with the farmers.

“There was his documentary being made about it at one point,” said Sarah, getting a little shaky on her stool. “An American chap. What was his name now … Randall, Randy. Ha! Anyway, that was about seven or eight years ago now, and I haven’t heard anything since.”

Exploring the frontiers
I knew a little more than she did, again courtesy of my relative, who had provided local assistance to the documentary-maker. After Mack was killed in a car accident in London in 2004, some of his supporters and family members had founded the John E Mack Institute, with a mission to “explore the frontiers of human experience, to serve the transformation of individual consciousness, and to further the evolution of the paradigms by which we understand human identity”.

In 2007, to further these rather grandiose aims, a young filmmaker called Randall Nickerson had signed on to do something with the Ariel School footage. “Geez, he was sooo handsome,” said Sarah, slapping her palms against her jeans.

“I could hardly concentrate when he was interviewing me. Not only that, he understood the thing on a different level, because he was an experiencer himself, who had been quite open about his encounter. I think he even appeared on Oprah!”

I had contacted Nickerson in 2008, and because he happened to be in Cape Town running former Ariel students to ground, we arranged to meet and talk about his project. He cancelled at the last minute, though, saying he didn’t feel quite ready.

From time to time I checked the Mack Institute webpage for updates, but after a few years it seemed the project had run into financial difficulties. Then, in late 2013, two hours of footage tagged with Nickerson’s name surfaced on YouTube. I can recognise the carcass of a creative albatross when I see one, and the amorphous video dump showed every sign of being just that.

As an accidental historical record, though, it is fascinating: a trove of rural school scenes from the eve of irreversible societal change; the last generation of khaki uniforms, freckled noses and colonial English accents; and Cynthia Hind, already an anachronism in a series of pre-independence floral print dresses, and wearing what was described to me as a “Bulawayo perm”.

Tacked on at the end of the video are some snippets of interviews Nickerson conducted with former students. “It really does stick with me that something happened, something was out there,” says a young man. “I think something definitely happened,” says a young woman.

‘Amazing experience’
A former teacher says “We met up on many occasions after that and hugged and shook our heads and said that was the most amazing experience of our lives”, whereas another former student says he hasn’t talked about the event to anyone, “because they’d probably think I’m nuts”.

When I told Sarah about the video she became very agitated. “Can I see it? Oh God no, I don’t want to. What do they all say? Am I on it?” she cried.

“Ok, just show me.”

We watched the relevant part of the video, Sarah with a hand over her mouth.

“God, their accents,” she said at one point, of the now American, Australian and English tones that contrasted so sharply with the voices she had known. It crossed my mind that the truly galvanic event in all of their lives was not the UFO landing but the policy from upon high that had turned them into aliens in New York, London, or wherever.

Then again, what did I know? When the clip ended Sarah stubbed out an Everest Menthol and shook her head.

“You want to know the real message here? The real message is that this stuff can brand you for life. It undermined Mack’s credibility, became this huge unending thing for others, and it certainly fucked me up. I mean, try telling people that you live in permanent fear of these things returning one day. Try telling them that you can actually sense when they’re back in our atmosphere. They’ll think you’re a kook. All this lot do,” she said, casting mock-angry eyes down the bar at a fellow boozer, who raised his glass and said: “True, but we love you anyway, Sê.”

Despite her patently thick skin, a look of extreme sadness entered Sarah’s eyes for a moment, as she pretended to watch her fingers pulling the label from a beer bottle.

“Christ, and to think I told the family I was just popping out to Bon Marche.”

Electronics go off as UFOs move over Georgia town

A Georgia witness at Loganville reported his cell phone, Internet and cable television reception failed during a sighting of “8 to 10 pulsating orbs” moving under 500 feet and less than 100 feet away, according to testimony in Case 59611 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The witness was outside sitting on a deck when he had an “uneasy feeling” in his stomach just as the objects were first noticed about 10:30 p.m. on August 24, 2014.

“I noticed a flash of light out of the corner of my eye,” the witness stated. “When I looked in the direction of the flash there were 8 to 10 orb-like lights close to the tree top level doing what looked like figure 8’s around each other for about 10 to 15 minutes.”

The witness described lights on the objects.

“These orbs were casting light to the ground and I could see the shadows of the trees on the ground.”

But what was more disturbing at the time was the failure of three utilities.

“In the time the orbs were in my sight my cell phone would not work and my Internet and TV both went out. While watching the orbs the ‘uneasy’ feeling I had in my stomach went away and I had a sense of calm come over me. All I could do was stand there and look as the orbs slowly moved from east-northeast to west-southwest.”

The witness believes military helicopters were also in the area.

“If I had to guess they were moving at maybe 5 mph or slower. After about 5 minutes of the orbs leaving my sight there was the sound of what I believe was a Blackhawk helicopter following the orbs. I did not see the helicopter but they have a very distinct sound.”

Loganville is a city located in Walton County with a half portion of the city located in Gwinnett County, Georgia, population 10,458. Georgia MUFON is investigating. The above quotes were edited for clarity.

Georgia had 12 UFO reports in August 2014 – the 16th highest reporting state – while California had 99 reports as the highest reporting state. The above quotes were edited for clarity. The UFO Alert Rating System is based on five levels – 1 through 5 – where states with 150 or more reports for the month are rated an Alert 1; states with 100 or more reports are rated an Alert 2; 25 reports or more for the month are rated an Alert 3; 13 or more reports are rated an Alert 4; and those states with less than 13 reports for the month are an Alert 5.

Red Eyed Creatures

Birch – I am a ‘seventy-five’ year old, who not only has had close encounters with UFO’s but I came ‘face to face’ with two of the ‘occupants’ when I was aged ‘nineteen’.  Another ‘nut case’ many might remark (if not to my face rest assured) I have after all no witness to that encounter that took place here in the UK as my brother Dennis departed these shores to live in Australia in 1969. He would however attest to that which took place ten years earlier on the first Sunday of January 1959 because he shared that terrifying encounter with me. My family members are fully aware of what my brother Den and I experienced that traumatic early morning hour. Because I have reiterated that account of that ‘mind blowing’ experience countless times since. It happened at approximately 0200hrs when Den and I were en-route home along the A3 route from Portsmouth, on Dennis’s 125cc BSA Bantam motorcycle.  He had taken our younger brother, Rob back to his Royal Marine Barracks near Portsmouth. Both Rob and I were serving in the Royal Marines and our ‘two weeks’ Christmas leave had ‘overlapped’ one another’s by one week (his leave commencing one week prior to mine). I had taken Rob’s ‘railway warrant’ – which I was entitled to as a fellow Royal Marine – to meet both brothers at ‘Portsmouth and Southsea’ railway station, Dennis having taken Rob there on the pillion of his motorbike. My intention was to say ‘goodbye’ to Rob at the station and then to return home with Dennis.  I had little else to do and I welcomed the ride and the company.  I remember that neither brother was at the station when I arrived there and I had to wait some time before Den turned up. His motorbike had incurred a ‘front tyre’ puncture although I have a feeling that I was late arriving at Portsmouth and Southsea railway station through some delay or other.  When I at last met up with Den he told me that Rob had continued onward to his barracks as he had to be there by ‘three minutes to midnight’. Thus, I mounted the pillion of Den’s motorbike well after midnight and very soon we left Portsmouth far behind.  I remember that it was bitter cold and I clung behind my brother’s body to shield myself from that bitter cold air.  I wore only a light, ‘blue’ summer jacket and light ‘fawn’ summer trousers.  Aside from my uniform I possessed few civilian clothes. 

Thus we rode along the A3. I was silent, alone with thoughts of my own return to my RM barracks a week later.  Conversing was out of the question.  Even shouting loudly was ineffective in the slipstream as we sped along. The whole route was bereft of traffic and eventually we found ourselves riding around the perimeter of the ‘Devil’s Punchbowl’ at Hindhead.  At one point, as we were almost about to leave the the ‘Bowl behind, so Den suddenly steered the motorbike onto the grass and the engine cut.  “Problem?”  Dennis assured me there wasn’t a problem but that it was ‘a good spot to take a breather and to spend a penny!’  So we stood there on the swathe of grass overlooking the ‘deep bowl-shaped’ valley stretching away before us. The sounds of the wind and of the motorbike engine took several minutes to disperse from our ears and it was good to get some respite from that bitter cold wind. Then, as the ‘ghost’ sound of wind and engine dispersed, so we noticed a strange sound emanating from down in the Punchbowl itself.  A sound impossible to describe except maybe that it was almost ‘musical’ to the ears ‘like the asdic of a submarine and yet at the same time really nothing like it’. We had never heard such a weird sound before and there was nothing with which to otherwise compare it. Puzzled and exceedingly curious we elected to make our way down into the ‘Punchbowl’ to discover the source of that mysterious sound. 

There was an initial very steep slope of maybe ‘thirty feet’ or so that we were obliged to descend on our ‘backsides’. Then, with Den leading the way we were able to continue on downwards along a barely discernible but more gently descending track. How long we were making our way steadily deeper, I don’t know but we were quite a long way down there and to me the weird ‘musical sound’ was becoming ever more mysterious and much louder as we came closer to its ‘source’. Whats more, as we drew closer to that ‘source’ I developed a strong sense of ‘unease’ that persisted as we proceeded.  Soon afterwards Den stopped abruptly and turned to me to express that he had ‘a bad feeling’ and added “I think we should turn back!”  Looking back in the direction of whence we had come I could see that it we had in fact travelled an uncomfortable distance away and in hushed tones I readily agreed with my brother that maybe we should indeed turn back.  Literally at that precise moment, before we had even turned around, there came a sudden momentarily silence as that weird sound abruptly ceased. What occurred next is equally difficult to describe. There was a sound, almost like that of ‘displaced air’ I can explain it no better than that. Then, this ‘sound’ rose vertically into the air, very close to where we stood. We both dropped to the ground instinctively in an effort to silhouette the ‘object’ against that brilliant backdrop of stars but we saw nothing even though we were able to ‘follow’ the path of travel by the strange ‘sound’ it was emitting. It appeared to travel somehow away to our ‘right’ and then ‘swooped’ back around to head back towards us.

The terrific ‘crash’ that ensued as it struck the ground was deafening and ought to have been heard as far away as Guildford, my thoughts at that time! It had  me comparing it to that of a large airliner ‘crash landing’.  There then followed the distinct loud sound of scrub being ‘flattened’ in its path as it seemed to ‘skid’ along under the inertia of its descent and then to finally come to a stop some little distance, maybe ‘twenty to thirty feet’ in front of us. I clearly have, etched into my mind, a distinct memory of the noise of thin branches or scrub scraping along an obviously ‘metallic’ fuselage, followed by the final ‘scraping’ sound as that branch broke free.  A ‘flying object’ of some sort had come to a halt. I stood staring at the bushes from where the sound of that ‘crash landing’ had come. I (we) had seen ‘nothing’ and yet this ‘flying object’ by the very sound it made as it hit the ground indicated a large, exceedingly heavy if ‘invisible’ craft and in my head the word UFO was at the forefront. Then, almost immediately my attention was drawn to ‘something’ approaching us from the direction that the UFO had ‘landed’. I stared ahead, my mind struggling to believe what was actually taking place. Then ‘it’ emerged.  I will describe what we saw, as best to my memory as possible for I was overcome by a feeling of sheer terror. This figure stood some ‘eight to ten feet’ tall.  It appeared to ‘glide’ rather than to walk. It also appeared to be floating some ‘two feet’ or so off the ground.  It stopped in front of me, so close that I could have touched it. I was literally paralysed with fear, an adrenalin rush so great that it had an opposite effect and I stood there transfixed, unable to move. Then, a second figure identical to the first, ‘glided’ out from the same direction and stood to the left of the first one, as viewed from my position.  Both figures seemed to be ‘floating off the ground’ and had seemed to glide. The ‘body seemed composed of some sort of black material that was convoluted, with like lengthwise ‘folds’.  The ‘head’ was encased in an elongated glass helmet’ and where the eyes would be was a single, large round-shaped ‘green eye’ or light. Today I would liken it to a large LED (Light Emitting Diode) but I am not so sure such devices existed at that time. Mercifully (I felt) I could not see the features behind the ‘glass’ but I had an uncanny and distinct feeling that I would’t want to see behind the ‘glass’ anyway.

I am unable to clearly describe my feelings except for one thought within the sheer terror that overwhelmed me. ‘This cannot be happening, but it IS!’ Amazingly thoughts of ‘those in government would not believe what is happening to me right now but they are fast asleep in their bed’s and NOT here in this Punchbowl with me, seeing what I am seeing!’  I clearly recall those thoughts. I seem to remember something else, a ‘sickly odour’. Was this the ‘odour of fear’ or did it come from those two aliens? I truthfully do not know!  Such thoughts were fleeting, coming to me in a moment of utmost terror.  My second thought was of the sudden need to ‘look at another human being’ and almost in slow motion and with great concentration of effort I managed to turn my head ‘left’ to look at my brother.  Why ‘left’ when he had been standing on my ‘right?’  I’m at a loss to explain that one. The two aliens stood a mere ‘few feet’ away, within touching distance. Utilising all my concentration I slowly, so very slowly and ‘mechanically’ managed to turn my head to look upon my brother. A second shock now struck me as I saw that I was standing there alone. The shock of this realisation galvanised my hitherto ‘paralysed’ body into sudden ‘action’ and turning my body to face the direction that I was facing, for the thought came to me that if I looked back at them again I would not escape.  I then ran! That headlong, terror-stricken flight was like a nightmare in itself because I was expecting to be seized from behind.  My thought was that I would surely not be allowed to escape after what I had just witnessed. I had no sense of direction at all, I remember only that my one and only desperate thought was to put as much distance between me and ‘them’ and as possible.  I ran, seemingly blindly and I could plainly hear high pitched screaming as I ran. Those screams seemed to be apart from me but may well have come from me, I truly don’t know!  All I remember was that headlong, panic-stricken flight as ‘running in a nightmare’ and the full expectancy that I would ‘not be allowed to escape’.  The next image as I ran so blindly was of finding myself inexplicably at the base of the ‘thirty foot’ steep incline that we had initially descended.  How did I, in that panic-stricken flight manage to find my way back to where we had descended into the Punch Bowl?  I was and am unable to explain that one either.

There, ahead of me and scrambling up that steep incline was my brother. I had ‘caught up’ with him and in later years he told me that he was on a ‘rise’ before reaching that incline and that when he looked back to check that I was with him he saw to his horror, that I was still standing at the original spot with two aliens clearly seen towering over me.  By the time he had scaled that steep incline, I had caught him up.  He must have seen me but seconds before I had turned and fled.  As a very fit, young Royal Marine and at the same time ‘fuelled’ with sheer panic, I can answer that one quite clearly.  As we feverishly tried to climb that steep incline so we would slip back down a ‘foot’ for every ‘three’ we made upwards.  Eventually we made the top.  Den mounted his motorbike, ‘kick started’ it and I leapt onto the pillion and away we sped in great haste.  Even as we rode at speed along that road I was half expecting to be seized and pulled off that motor-bike and I clung tenaciously, my arms around my brother’s waist. I remember that just before we reached the city of Guildford, eleven miles on, Den pulled over and cut the engine.  A tall, long ash fence lay close to us and against this we dropped onto our haunches unable to believe what had happened and how we had escaped a ‘fate worse than death’.  I remember nothing more after collapsing against that fence.  I haven memory of arriving home, not even of the rest of my leave.  I do not to this day remember returning to my barracks nor of the intense training that followed.  I have hitherto told no one outside of the family of our experience at the Punchbowl that ‘never to be forgotten’ night. 

Strangely, I never forgave my brother for ‘deserting’ me down there.  For three years I had no contact with him. Then, I heard that my brother was in an Isolation Hospital at Feltham, where he lived and that he was in a ‘serious condition’.  Dennis had contracted ‘Hepatitis C’ and relenting, I went to visit him. What I saw shocked me and totally melted my anger.  Den looked like a ‘skeleton’ with ‘yellow skin’ drawn over it.  He was badly jaundiced and had almost died.  A priest had closed his eyes when Den suddenly opened them and the nurse had screamed.  It had been a very ‘close call’.  It was ‘years’ later that Den explained that he had thought I was behind him when he ran.  That only on reaching high ground had he turned to look back and saw that I was not with him but was standing there still with those two ‘beings’ towering over me.  His only thought then was to ‘escape and to report what had happened’.  Luckily for me that I managed to ‘just’ catch him up before he’d gained the top of that steep incline, above which his motorbike was parked.  It was all of ‘thirty miles’ journey back to where I lived.  Besides, poor Den would no doubt have been taken for psychiatric observation.  OR charged with possible ‘murder’ associated with my ‘disappearance’.  Do I believe in ‘aliens?’ DO I WHAT?  Oh yes, ‘they’ exist for sure!  You won’t find them when you are in the pub, watching TV or fast asleep in your bed, although I must hesitate here because I have since read of abductions of hitherto sleeping persons. There was something else that is relevant to this true story. When I finally talked with Dennis and asked him outright “why did you desert me down there?’  He told me “it was those small creatures with red eyes that had almost formed a circle around you”. There were hundreds of them.  I never thought I would see you again!”  I had not seen these ‘red eyed’ creatures but then, I had not been looking back!

Many years later, on desolate Dartmoor in Devonshire, late one night, on the Northern Moor out of Okehampton, was a strange arc of brilliant white light. Another brother, Jim and his teenage son and daughter were with us.  We decided to look closer at this strange arc of bright white light behind a high rocky Tor. The road to that part of the Moor was narrow, too narrow to ‘reverse turn’ and so would necessitate continuing a few miles further to the tiny ’roundabout’ or ‘doughnut’ to come back on ourselves.  After driving along this narrow road, flanked on either side by a steep ‘drop’ onto a boulder strewn moor for some miles, I began to feel a strong sense of apprehension, a strange feeling of danger, my sixth sense at work!  This feeling had barely been with me for long when brother Jim suggested that we should ‘turn back’ because he ‘felt it was dangerous to continue’. However, I had spotted something else, something that made my heart race. I saw literally ‘hundreds if not thousands’ of ‘pairs of red eyes’.  Those ‘red eyes’  did not belong to animals because no animal was capable of such speed and able to traverse that boulder-strewn terrain and the deep craters littering the North Moor, especially at night, besides which the number of those pairs of ‘red eyes’ was vast. My blood ran cold as I remembered what Den had seen at the Punch Bowl, ‘red eyes’ exactly what we were seeing there now on that Moor.  And without doubt were seeking to surround us.  Keeping my mounting panic and concern to myself I heard Jim again express his concern at continuing and I responded with mounting anger due to fear and frustration that I could not ‘bloody well turn around’ as the road was far too narrow and too high above the moor for the wheels to reach the ground once the wheels left the road. I felt that we had no choice but to continue on to that small ’roundabout’ or ‘doughnut’ that I estimated was about ‘four’ miles further on. I was driving a Mk 1600 1 Ford Consul and brother Jim asked to get out to ‘see if there was a place we do a reverse turn’.  All too soon he called out “here Bri, you can reverse here!”  I replied “are you sure Jim?”  I had doubts, in that the ‘drop’ appeared to be too deep. He assured me that it was ‘okay’.  The rapidly moving ‘red eyes’ had by now spread out ahead of us, crossed over the road and having split into two vast ‘groups’ either side of that road, both were rushing speedily in our direction as if to encircle us. Where had I heard this before?  It was Dennis and the Punch Bowl saga all over again. Thousands of them it seemed to me to be.  Now I knew it was vital that we escaped. The memory of the Punch Bowl left little doubt in my mind as to what those ‘red eyes’ were,’what’ they belonged to. Trying hard to control the fast rising panic within me I shakily expressed my doubts that the ‘drop’ was too deep and would plant the car on it’s chassis before the wheels contacted the ground.  “No, it’s okay!”  Jim’s words were hardly convincing but by now close to panic myself I drove slowly, turning the steering wheel ‘hard over’ to greatly effect the reverse turn and trusting Jim’s ‘observation’ I put the gear into reverse and backed the car slowly off the road.  A sudden ‘crash’ ensued and the wheels, it was rear wheel drive, spun above the surface of the ground.  We were now completely trapped and helpless!  Jim and Jimmy got out of the car and went to the rear. Christine was sitting behind me as her Dad and brother were trying to lift the car back onto the road, without success. 

I had seldom experienced such fear as I sat there helplessly watching those rapidly speeding ‘entities’ that would soon have encircled and been upon us. No one else in my car had as yet seen them. Jim and his son were trying to lift the rear of that 1600cc Ford Consul back onto the road.  Jim was a brawny, a strong fellow but all that he and his son achieved was to ‘lift’ the car only so far a little way ‘off’ its suspension. The wheels however remained firmly on the ground. The idea fleetingly entered my head to get out and to run those ‘nine miles’ back to Okehampton, but how when those ‘things’ were so fleetingly fast?  Besides which, I couldn’t leave Christine and whatever happened we were not capable of travelling ‘nine miles’ on foot to escape those rapidly speeding ‘beings’. Then as Jim was trying without success to lift the car, so Christine suddenly glanced over to her ‘right’; saw the hundreds of ‘red eyes’ pouring like a flood down that sloping terrain towards us, screamed loudly “What are those? What are those?” Her loud scream signalled for the movement of the car on it’s springs to momentarily cease, obviously Jim had paused to see what had frightened his daughter. This was then followed by the sudden and unbelievable lifting of the car bodily in such a way as to slew it around at the same time so that it was facing our escape route out of there.  Jim and Jimmy dived into the car and opening the throttle I drove out of that place like the proverbial ‘bat out of Hell’.  I could scarcely believe our lucky escape.  It is said that fear can induce enormous ‘reserves’ of strength in a crisis and that is what happened with Jim. 

I drove as fast as was safely possible on that narrow road that night and upon reaching the top of a hill, some ‘mile or two’ further on, I stopped the car, engine left running, got out and looked back, Jim likewise.  For several seconds we saw nothing but then, there they were, those two vast swarms of ‘red eyes’ pursuing us, on both sides of that road.  I don’t exaggerate their numbers, to me that seemed to run in ‘hundreds if not thousands’.  They ‘appeared’ to me to be small in stature, that was my impression because it was dark. They certainly travelled at speed over a very dangerous and rough terrain with many deep ‘craters’ and strewn boulders.  After about ‘five’ stops, atop a hill (a precaution in the event that the car stalled and would not re start we would coast down).  Each time we stopped and looked back so a ‘minute or so would pass then suddenly, there they were, continuing their pursuit of us.  On the ‘last’ hill I was able to see the lights of ‘Okehampton’ ahead of us, on our ‘right’.  We stopped here and again looked back.  This time however we saw nothing more of those ‘red eyed creatures’. 

Dear reader, whether you believe my true narrative I leave with you. I can but sincerely express that it happened as I have recorded it.  As a ‘reluctant’ ufologist I have written of this ‘alien encounter’ quite some time ago, it was not published on the site I sent it to, neither was it even acknowledged.  I wrote it out of sincere interest and possibly in the hope of eliciting a similar experience from others who maybe experienced an ‘extra terrestrial’ identical to mine. For what it’s worth I have made ‘pilgrimage’ to that same area several times since, without ‘success’ except for two occasions when I heard that same ‘musical sound ‘fly’ over not so far overhead, just above tree height in fact. Nothing was visible although the sound indicated it had passed over the top of the tall pine trees through which our path led. ‘My’ car (borrowed from my younger brother) was parked some ‘half mile’ away at a car-park off the A3 and unable to contain my excitement as my brother said to me “Brian, I have never doubted your story but hearing that sound for myself, well it is certainly not of this World!”  I suggested we return to the car, have a much needed coffee to steady our nerves, grab the portable ‘excuse for a tape-recorder’ (a ‘tinny’ Woolworth job) and endeavour to capture that weird sound”.  We made it to the car-park and to the coffee when suddenly brilliant lights lit up the car from behind.  A rap on the window and I saw a policeman accompanied by a ‘special’.  I wound the window down.  He asked “what are you doing here?”  My short ‘fuse’ at this offensive intrusion along with my irate words to the effect that it was a ‘free country’ and to ‘clear off’ (well, ‘clear’ was not exactly the word I used ) did not go down well because a second patrol car arrived and my brother and I were handcuffed and incarcerated in separate cells at Godalming Police Station. How could we ‘explain’ that we were ‘UFO hunting?  The police cells that we spent six hours in being infinitely the better alternative to a mental hospital! 

This incarceration was due to the ‘copper’ opening the boot of the car and discovering a ‘twelve bore’ shotgun that I had placed there, intending to shoot rabbits the following morning.  I was accused of being ‘Harry Roberts’ (the guy who had shot a policeman dead, although this man was already in police custody in 1966).  Raymond and I were released at 0600hrs the following morning, without charge!  I have had other experiences of UFO’s one of which was no rest distance away out at sea off Brighton in Sussex. It made no sound, gave the undoubted impression of being immense in size, and moved slowly and silently just above the sea, emerging from a fog bank on the West side to vanish silently into the fog bank on the East side. It was followed then by a second, identical ‘saucer shaped UFO’ with a ‘bee hive’ like dome on top and ‘small’ portholes’ around the circumference of the body. Time being 0500hrs. I had been sea-fishing at the time of the occurrence. I also had a frightening experience whilst under canvas at that same seaside resort of Brighton. But that, as they say, is another story!

UFO Hunter Says Council Should Embrace Aliens

Over the past century, Scarborough’s tourism trade has been dominated by holidaymakers hellbent on fish, chips and seafront strolls.

But if Scarborough Council want visitors to keep flocking to the coast, it should put less emphasis on buckets and spades – and instead focus on little green men.

That’s at least the view of local alien hunter Russ Kellett, who feels the authority is missing out on the “goldmine” that is UFO tourism.

He claims the borough is a hotbed for close encounters, and in paranormal circles, is as synonymous with flying saucers as it is with donkey rides.

“There’s more going on with UFOs in Scarborough than in Roswell,” said Filey’s Russ, who claims he was once abducted by ‘wetsuit’ clad 9ft aliens.

“We have some really famous UFO sightings around here, and if I was the council I would have banners up saying ‘Welcome to the British UFO capital’.”

Several American extra terrestrial hotspots have recently began peddling UFO tourism to stargazers in a bid to bring in extra revenue.

While it’s currently an alien concept to tourism boards in this country, Mr Kellett feels it could prove lucrative should the council pursue it.

And with the authority’s recent tourism roadmap revealing an extra three million visitors a year are wanted in Scarborough over the next decade, the man behind that report said he will “look at anything” if it benefits the borough.

And Cllr David Chance feels it raises a legitimate point that the council should think outside the box if the borough is to remain a tourist magnet.

“UFOs are not something I’ve thought about but we are always looking at innovative schemes,” said the cabinet member. “We won’t discount anything.”

However, the council seemed less receptive to the idea, with a spokesperson adding: “Our tourism strategy concentrates on a number of key themes and target markets.

“But this particular area of interest isn’t one of them.”

‘Meteorite’ Smashes Into Nicaraguan Capital

Managua (AFP) – A mysterious explosion that rocked Nicaragua’s crowded capital Managua, creating a large crater, appears to have been caused by a small meteorite, officials said Sunday.

Amazingly, in a sprawling city of 1.2 million people, the impact near the international airport did not cause any known injuries, but it did leave a crater measuring 12 meters (39 feet) across and was felt throughout the capital late on Saturday.

Nicaraguan authorities believe it was a piece of the small asteroid dubbed “2014 RC,” which passed very close to Earth on Sunday and was estimated by astronomers to be about 20 meters big, or the size of a house.

“We are convinced that this was a meteorite. We have seen the crater from the impact,” said Wilfredo Strauss of the Seismic Institute.

The meteorite appeared to have hurtled into a wooded area near the airport around midnight and the hit was so large that it registered on the instruments Strauss’s organization uses to size up earthquakes.

“You can see two waves: first, a small seismic wave when the meteorite hit earth, and then another stronger one, which is the impact of the sound,” he said.

Government officials and experts visited the impact site on Sunday.

One of them, William Martinez, said it was not yet clear if the meteorite burned up completely or if it had been blasted into the soil.

“You can see mirror-like spots on the sides of the crater from where the meteorite power-scraped the walls,” Martinez said.

Government spokeswoman, First Lady Rosario Murillo, said Managua would be in contact with the US Geological Service to try to get more information about “this fascinating event” in the Central American nation, one of Latin America’s poorest countries.

People who live near the crater told local media they heard a blast they took for an explosion, and that liquid, sand and dust were blown through the air, which smelled like something had burned.

There were no reported injuries because the impact was in a wooded spot, and flights at the airport were not affected.

NASA said last week that the asteroid 2014 RC, at the time of closest approach, would be approximately one-tenth the distance from the center of Earth to the moon, or about 25,000 miles (40,000 kilometers).

It had been projected to be roughly over New Zealand at the time of its closest approach, which astronomers had calculated would be on Sunday at about 1818 GMT.

A small meteorite landed near the international airport in the Nicaraguan capital, Managua, on Saturday night, government officials say.

Residents reported hearing a loud bang and feeling the impact, which left a crater 12m (40ft) wide and 5m deep.

Government spokeswoman Rosario Murillo said the meteorite seemed to have broken off an asteroid which was passing close to Earth.

She said international experts had been called in to investigate further.

No-one was hurt when it hit the wooded area near the international airport and an air force base.

An adviser to Nicaragua’s Institute of Earth Studies (Ineter), Wilfried Strauch, said he was “convinced it was a meteorite” which caused the impact.

Experts studying the crater said it was not clear whether the meteorite had disintegrated upon impact or had been blasted into soil.

Locals said they heard a large blast just before midnight local time and reported a burning smell.

“We thought it was a bomb because we felt an expansive wave,” Jorge Santamaria told Associated Press news agency.

Ineter scientist Jose Millan said that “we need to celebrate the fact that it fell in an area where, thank God, it didn’t cause any danger to the population”.

Managua, which has more than a million inhabitants is densely populated.

“All the evidence that we’ve confirmed at the site corresponds exactly with a meteorite and not with any other type of event,” he said.

“We have the seismic register which coincides with the time of impact, and the typical characteristic that it produces a cone in the place of impact,” he added.

Astronomer Humberto Saballos said the meteorite could have broken off from the 2014RC asteroid which passed Earth at the same time.

2014RC, which is the size of a house, came closest to earth at 18:18 GMT on Sunday, when it passed over New Zealand at a distance of about 40,000km (25,000 miles).

The asteroid was first discovered on 31 August and, at its closest approach, was about one-tenth of the distance from the centre of Earth to the Moon, Nasa said in a statement.

It is expected to orbit near Earth again in the future.

In February 2013, a meteorite exploded over Chelyabinsk in Central Russia, injuring more than 1,000 people.

Nasa currently tracks more than 11,000 asteroids in orbits that pass relatively close to Earth. – AP

‘Jack the Ripper’ Identity Discovered?

It is one of the world’s greatest murder mysteries which has baffled investigators for more than a century.

But now an author and self confessed “armchair detective” claims to have solved perhaps the most notorious whodunit ever, and discovered who Jack the Ripper was.

Russell Edwards claims Aaron Kosminski, a 23 year-old Polish immigrant who ended up dying in an asylum, was “definitely, categorically and absolutely” the man behind the grisly killing spree in 1888 in London’s East End.

Mr Edwards said a blood-stained shawl he bought in 2007 after an auction in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, held vital DNA evidence which led him to the killer.

Naming Jack the Ripper

He said: “I’ve got the only piece of forensic evidence in the whole history of the case. I’ve spent 14 years working on it, and we have definitively solved the mystery of who Jack the Ripper was.

“Only non-believers that want to perpetuate the myth will doubt. This is it now – we have unmasked him.”

Jack the Ripper murdered at least five women, slashing their throats, removing some of their internal organs and leaving their mutilated bodied in Whitechapel’s darkened alleyways.

Mr Edwards, 48, from Barnet, north London, was “captivated” by the murder mystery and had been investigating it in his spare time, but had come to the conclusion it could never be solved.

But then in 2007 he saw a shawl found by the body of Catherine Eddowes, one of the Ripper’s victims, was up for sale.

He bought it, and enlisted the help of Jari Louhelainen, an expert in molecular biology, who used pioneering techniques to find DNA from her blood and that of the killer.

He said: “Here I am with the shawl and possibly the evidence to solve the most unsolvable murder in English criminal history. But where do I start? That was the big question.

“I enlisted the help of Jari and we embarked on a three-and-a-half year journey.

“When we discovered the truth it was the most amazing feeling of my entire life.”

Mr Edwards said the discovery 126 years after the murders proves beyond doubt that Kosminski – one of the six key suspects commonly cited as the Ripper – was the actual killer.

He said the shawl had been taken by acting Sergeant Amos Simpson, who was on duty the night of Eddowes’s death and wanted it for his wife.

But horrified at the blood-soaked wrap, she never wore it, and it was stored away and passed down through the generations until it came to auction seven years ago.

Mr Edwards said: “Thank God the shawl has never been washed, as it held the vital evidence.”

The author, who said he was part-inspired to take up the search for the killer after watching the Johnny Depp film From Hell about the Ripper murders, said police had identified Kosminski as a suspect, but never had enough evidence to bring him to trial.

Kosminski was a Polish Jewish immigrant who, fleeing persecution in his Russia-controlled homeland, came with his family to England in 1881 and lived in Mile End Old Town.

He was admitted to a string of lunatic asylums, where he died in 1899 of gangrene in the leg.

A medical research team of twenty-one specialists, headed by Dr. Sudhir V. Shah, had Mr. Jani under twenty-four hours of observation for ten days at the Sterling Hospital in Ahmedabad. The team’s research expertise included cardiology, neurology, urology, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, renal function, pulmonary function, ENT analysis, psychiatry, general medicine, and other specialities. A series of investigations were done on Mr. Jani in each of these areas according to a pre-determined protocol, and additional tests were carried out as per suggestions of the team. Life began on Earth much earlier than thought

Scientists have determined that oxygen-producing life forms appeared around 3 billion years ago.

Based on the work of researchers at Trinity College Dublin and Presidency University in Kolkata, the discovery suggests that oxygen-producing organisms responsible for making it possible for more complex life forms to evolve first appeared on Earth 60 million years earlier than previously believed.

The discovery was made by measuring uranium-lead isotope decay in the rocks to find evidence of oxygen-based soil formation.

“This is a very exciting finding, which helps to fill a gap in our knowledge about the evolution of the early Earth,” said study lead author Quentin Crowley.

“This paleosol from India is telling us that there was a short-lived pulse of atmospheric oxygenation and this occurred considerably earlier than previously envisaged.”

While micro-organisms certainly existed earlier than 3 billion years ago, it wasn’t until this time that some of them evolved the ability to produce oxygen through photosynthesis. Read more at IBN Live

Witness records UFO over Lake Havasu City (VIDEO)

A witness captured video of a strange light in the sky over Lake Havasu City, Arizona on the evening of July 14, 2014.

The unidentified light hovers in the sky, then slowly descends into what the witness surmises is SARA Park in the southeastern park of the city. Although the witness states that the object changes color, that behavior is not apparent in the video.

Local paper Today’s News-Herald says that “no reports of alien activity or strange aircraft have been reported at SARA Park on July 13 or the following days.” But Dennis Freyermuth, chief investigator for the Phoenix Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) is investigating the sighting. The paper explains that Freyermuth could not confirm any aircraft activity in the area on the evening in question. And, unfortunately, he has not been able to locate any additional witnesses. Even the four witnesses who were present when the video was recorded have been “unavailable.”

Because no other witnesses reported the light in the sky, Freyermuth believes that, if others observed the UFO, they “knew what it was and paid no attention to it.”

“Right now I have no other supporting evidence other than this video clip and (the recorder’s) statements,” he told the paper.  “I can’t come up with anything else to verify something unusual . . . Based on my observation it doesn’t look like an E.T. event.”

According to Freyermuth, Phoenix MUFON, which covers all of Arizona, typically receives fifteen to twenty-five UFO sighting reports each month. But he cautiously points out that ninety-five percent of those sightings can be explained.

Researcher calls for UFO investigation group in Australia

A researcher believes Australia needs a dedicated civilian group tasked with investigating UFOs.

The idea was proposed by longtime UFO researcher Keith Basterfield at the recent Victorian UFO action conference in Victoria, Australia. He stated, “At the moment we have no idea of what UFO reports are being made around Australia . . . I would like to see somebody take that up again.”

Basterfield started researching unexplained aerial phenomena in the 1960s, and has been involved with multiple UFO research groups including the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) and the Aerial Phenomena Research Organization (APRO). The Herald Sun reports that Basterfield suggests modeling Australia’s national response unit after MUFON and GEIPAN, a unit of the French Space Agency charged with investigating UFOs.

“The role of the team would be to receive a case, fly there, interview the witnesses, take samples, document their findings, analyse it and publish it for us all to look at,” he explains. “It is possible for us to do that.”

At the sold-out Victorian UFO action conference, Basterfield also proposed a three-day symposium dedicated to the still-unidentified 1966 Westall UFO incident, a case in which hundreds of students, staff, and nearby residents watched a UFO hover, land, and quickly fly away. A weather balloon was recently offered as a potential explanation for the incident. But witnesses and attendees at the recent conference questioned this assertion. Basterfield explained, “I know of at least one Australian researcher who is sitting on some very detailed information about this case supplied by an informant and I would like to see them invited to share the knowledge with us all.”

There is significant UFO activity in Australia, with several interesting sightings regularly reported in the media. Recently, the head of a UFO research group in Queensland reported a spike in UFO reports in the past few months. “We get about 100 calls a year and across Australia all of the UFO research groups get up to 800,” she explained. “That’s just the reported sightings – a lot go unreported.”

Basterfield believes that establishing a quick response team to investigate UFO sightings across Australia within hours of them being reported would greatly aid in identifying and better understanding the active UFO presence over Australia.
