Dit is ons nieuw hondje Kira, een kruising van een waterhond en een Podenko. Ze is sinds 7 februari 2024 bij ons en druk bezig ons hart te veroveren. Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

On a winter’s night in 1952, it was pandemonium at a Girls Club when they all saw a Flying Saucer. I was eleven years old when this happened,” Diane says. Diane was leaving the Binghamton Girls Club at approximately 9 p.m., in February 1952. The facility was located intersection of Frederick and Liberty streets in Binghamton, NY. The girls had just been dismissed for the evening, so the front yard was full of girls age 9-16, about 45-60 in number, all heading for home. Diane was fascinated by the night sky and the beautiful stars so she was constantly looking up at them. The winter sky that evening was crystal clear, so she took advantage of the opportunity to look around. To the west she saw the moon as a simple crescent. As she glanced toward the southeast sky, she saw something odd and interesting. “It looked like a shark’s fin at first… I may have been the first to notice the thing.” She says.
Diane described the object as self-illuminated; “It had a harvest moon orange color sort of appearance. No other lights were visible.” She explains that the object drew closer and enlarged in size,”then it flipped or sort of rolled over, I saw this whole thing very clearly, when it sort of turned over or revolved horizontally it appeared as a disk and approached us very quickly and stopped in the sky about 45 degrees up from the south horizon.” Diane says the object was totally silent. She further states that it was like an orange football or blimp shape with portholes around the middle, and it appeared solid. “I had the distinct feeling that we were being observed or scanned or something. It was a very oppressive feeling I had never experienced before. When someone yelled”it’s a flying saucer” it started a stampede back into the Girl’s Club door, if you can imagine a large number of teen-age girls all trying to get back into a small door all at once.”
Inside the girls club the group of teens were yelling at the two women directors, telling them that a flying saucer was outside. The staffer reluctantly went outside for a look. By this time the craft had moved to the southeast and it quickly moved away in an apparent straight line becoming quickly smaller to an orange point of light and disappeared. The director of girls club in an effort to calm the frightened youngsters told them simply.”It’s the moon.” Diane tells us that she objected to the trite explanation, telling the director “no.” She pointed to the moon setting in the western sky. The director paid no attention to what the eleven year old had to say about it. Diane tells us that she did check the local newspaper the next day but couldn’t find a report of the event. Finally Diane tells us that for her it was a life changing experience, “I entered The University of Michigan as an astronomy major in 1958, as a direct result of fascination based on this event.”
A Manitoba, Canada witness at Birds Hill reported waking during the night while camping as a bright blue light filled his tent, according to August 4, 2014 testimony in Case 58629 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.
The witness was camping alone on the night of July 31 to August 1, 2014, and recalls waking near 3 a.m.

“My tent was filled by a bright light that started off whitish but changed to bright blue,” the witness stated. “It was shining through the tent from the outside. I do not remember hearing anything, but I remember feeling strange and disoriented.”
The witness says he returned to sleep at that point.
“I did not have the urge to leave my tent, just to close my eyes and hope it went away. I woke up again, I am not sure how much later. I felt less disoriented and was wondering why I had woken earlier.”
Then the witness had memories from the event.
“I then remembered the blue light and I then had a memory of a small hooded figure at the edge of my campsite. When I noticed it, it flashed closer to me without walking. I have no memory of a craft or anything else, but I have had sightings in the past.”

Birds Hill is a community in the Canadian province of Manitoba located a few kilometers northeast of Winnipeg. MUFON Canada is investigating.
A report was submitted to the MUFON CMS in reference to an anomaly seen on Google Earth over Yellowstone National Park. The only statement offered was:
I was moving from frame to frame on google earth when i found these photos. I dont know if they are ufo's or what they are.

Engineers from the space agency managed to produce tiny amounts of thrust using a microwave engine design that could turn space travel on its head
In a quiet announcement that has sent shockwaves through the scientific world, Nasa has cautiously given its seal of approval to a new type of “impossible” space engine that could revolutionize space travel.
In a paper published by the agency’s experimental Eagleworks Laboratories, Nasa engineers confirmed that they had produced tiny amounts of thrust from an engine without propellant – an apparent violation of the conservation of momentum; the law of physics that states that every action must have an equal and opposite reaction.
If further experiments continue to confirm the reality of these microwave thrusters then it could trigger a new era of space travel. Nasa’s involvement is no guarantee of success, but it does suggest that scientists are taking the possibility of ‘impossible’ engines seriously. Perhaps we should too.

Pew Research’s recent public opinion poll on technology and the future has been on my mind this week. We’ve already discussed the possibility of weather control and teleportation, but what about time travel? Only 9% of Americans polled say they want time travel technology (or, at least, that they’d prioritize it over other futuristic contraptions), which I’m initially inclined to blame on thefact that most of us didn’t grow up watching Doctor Who and don’t know how cool time travel technology can be.
As was the case with most of the other technologies discussed in the Pew study, time travel refers to something we’re already doing (albeit on an insignificant scale). Due to the effects of time dilation, astronauts and satellites already travel forward in time by tiny fractions of a second. Greenwich Royal Observatory’s Colin Stuart explains how here:
But even if we perfect and amplify this technology, it only allows time travel to the future, and where’s the fun in that? There’s little point in traveling to the future if you can’t come back to the present when you’re done. But traveling backward through time involves a lot more energy and, in Michio Kaku’s words, “punching a hole in the universe”:
A good number of scientists and inventors are trying, in various ways, to figure outhow we can travel through time—but none, as far as we know, have been successful.. Our inability to conquer time travel defines our existence as mortal beings who can only move within brief, finite periods of time—in one direction, and at or near one speed. If we ever could travel in time to change the past, it would be to the human experience what printing our own fake money would be to a game of Monopoly. It would be a game-changer—so much of one that our odds of using the technology responsibly, or even competently, would be slim. Stephen Hawking once remarked that one of the best arguments against future use of time travel is the lack of evidence for time travelers among us. It does, at least, suggest that if future generations have visited us, they had the good sense to keep it to themselves.
Even 45 years later, Buzz Aldrin has detailed memories of the Apollo 11 mission, when he became the second man to set foot on the moon.
Dishing about the moment he saw an “unidentified” object floating outside his Apollo capsule, Aldrin wrote:
“On Apollo 11 en route to the Moon, I observed a light out the window that appeared to be moving alongside us. There were many explanations of what that could be, other than another spacecraft from another country or another world — it was either the rocket we had separated from, or the 4 panels that moved away when we extracted the lander from the rocket and we were nose to nose with the two spacecraft. So in the close vicinity, moving away, were 4 panels. And I feel absolutely convinced that we were looking at the sun reflected
The ex-astronaut, who is speaking out this month ahead of the 45th anniversary of the 1969 moon landing, discussed the mission, in a Reddit-AMA on Tuesday.
Aldrin first recounted his UFO anecdote during a Science Channel program in 2005. At the time, UFO enthusiasts were apparently upset that Aldrin had not shared the information sooner.
During his Reddit AMA, Aldrin also took time to proclaim his hope that humans will travel to Mars in the near future.
"There is very little doubt, in my mind, that ... the next monumental achievement of humanity will be the first landing by an Earthling, a human being, on the planet Mars," Aldrin wrote, adding that he expects an international team to establish a presence on the red planet.
Aldrin added that a "collection of the best" individuals from around the world should land on Mars and establish a permanent settlement, rather than representatives of a private company with an eye on space tourism -- such as Elon Musk's SpaceX.
Wrote Aldrin:
I have considered whether a landing on Mars could be done by the private sector. It conflicts with my very strong idea, concept, conviction, that the first human beings to land on Mars should not come back to Earth. They should be the beginning of a build-up of a colony / settlement, I call it a "permanence." A settlement you can visit once or twice, come back, and then decide you want to settle. Same with a colony. But you want it to be permanent from the get-go, from the very first.
Should NASA send astronauts back to the moon? Aldrin said that's probably not the best use of resources. Instead, he said, the U.S. should direct its focus further into space and establish colonies and labs on Mars.

He and I have tangled a couple of times at meetings and he even ignored some of the data his own people had but anyway I'll write a column ... I write a monthly column for the MUFON Journal and as soon as I get the book I will read it and write a column and judging on the past unless James Carrion has changed a great deal which I doubt I think we'll find that the book itself is disinformation ... how's that for a prediction? ... I haven't really gone into any detail yet because I haven't read the book and I don't dare to [I didn't hear this part very well but I think Stan said dare to] until I read the book ... I've only gone by past history."
I will answer Stanton’s comments on the Rosetta Deception by using Stanton Friedmanisms: "Don’t bother with me the facts, my mind is made up and if you can’t attack the data, attack the person."
All of my Rosetta Deception research is based on facts that are well documented in the book. Stanton admits he hasn't yet read the book but then categorically says I am full of baloney. Stanton later says he will read the Rosetta Deception and write an article for the MUFON journal on it but then states that he “predicts the book will be disinformation.”
Astoundingly, later on in the interview when asked to offer an opinion on Stan Romanek, he says “I don’t have enough information to have a reasonable opinion”. When asked about some alleged new Roswell related material recently found in some attic, Stan states, “I don’t know enough to have an opinion” and “why should I replace facts with conjecture?” Uh? Did you not just do that Stan by calling my research baloney and disinformation when you still have not read the book?
So Stanton, here is my response to your penchant at contradicting yourself: Practice what you preach and do your homework and get your facts straight before you commit to an opinion.

Volgens astronomen zijn er naast de Aarde honderd miljoen andere plaatsen in de Melkweg die mogelijk leven bevatten. Ze baseren hun onderzoek op een nieuwe berekeningsmethode om informatie over planeten in andere zonnestelsels te analyseren. Dat meldt Science Daily.
De onderzoekers van de universiteiten van Cornell, Texas, Puerto Rico en Washington publiceerden hun studie in het vakblad Challenges. Nooit eerder werd een schatting gemaakt van het aantal werelden in het heelal die mogelijk complexe levensvormen huisvesten.
Ze namen meer dan duizend planeten onder de loep en pasten een formule toe die onder andere dichtheid, temperatuur, samenstelling en afstand tot de centrale ster in rekening brengt. Met de informatie die dat opleverde, ontwikkelden ze de Biological Complexity Index (BCI). Eén à twee procent van de tien miljard planeten in de Melkweg had een BCI-score die hoger was dan 'Europa', een maan van Jupiter waarvan gedacht wordt dat die ondergrondse oceanen heeft die leven kunnen bevatten. Meercellige organismen De wetenschappers benadrukken dat hun studie niet aantoont dat er leven bestaat op zoveel planeten. Wel zijn de voorwaarden vervuld die complex leven mogelijk kunnen maken. "Complex leven betekent niet hetzelfde als intelligent leven, hoewel het niet uitgesloten is", zeggen de onderzoekers. "Het gaat om meercellige organismen, groter en complexer dan microben, in verschillende vormen."
Het lijkt dus erg onwaarschijnlijk dat we alleen zijn, zeggen de onderzoekers. Maar ondanks het grote aantal planeten dat mogelijk leven huisvest, is de Melkweg zo groot dat die planeten erg ver uit elkaar liggen. Een ontmoeting met buitenaardse wezens lijkt daardoor uitgesloten.
Het dichtsbijzijnde zonnestelsel dat mogelijk leven bevat, is Gliese 581. Het heeft twee planeten die schijnbaar complexe biosferen kunnen huisvesten. De afstand van de aarde tot Gliese 581 bedraagt ongeveer twintig lichtjaren.
Wetenschappers zijn hoopvol om in de zeer nabije toekomst buitenaards leven te vinden. Maar de kans dat dat intelligent leven zal zijn, is klein, zo klonk het ruim een week geleden tijdens een paneldiscussie in het NASA-hoofdkwartier. Onderzoekers van het Harvard-Smithsonian Center of Astrophysics hebben nu een slimme manier bedacht om op zoek te gaan naar buitenaardse beschavingen: "Zoek naar industriële vervuiling in de atmosfeer van andere planeten."
Met de nieuwste generatie telescopen kunnen wetenschappers in de atmosfeer van exoplaneten zoeken naar zuurstof en methaan, die erop wijzen dat er leven is. Maar ook eenvoudige levensvormen als microben produceren die gassen. Daarom is een nieuwe benadering vereist, vinden de astrofysici van Harvard-Smithsonian.
Uit hun onderzoek, dat binnenkort in het vakblad The Astrophysical Journal verschijnt, blijkt dat het onder ideale omstandigheden mogelijk moet zijn de ecologische vingerafdruk van buitenaardse wezens waar te nemen. De James Webb Space Telescope, die in 2018 in gebruik genomen wordt, kan twee soorten chloorfluorkoolstoffen detecteren. Dat zijn chemicaliën die gebruikt worden in onder andere spuitbussen en oplosmiddelen, en die de ozon vernietigen. Een kanttekening: om deze signalen te kunnen opvangen, zouden er minimaal tien keer zoveel ozonvernietigende stoffen in de atmosfeer moeten zweven als op onze Aarde.
Bezwaren Toch zijn er ook enkele bezwaren. "We beschouwen industriële vervuiling als een teken van intelligent leven", zegt onderzoeker Henry Lin, die de studie leidde. "Maar misschien zijn deze beschavingen al verder gevorderd dan wij, en zien zij vervuiling als een teken van onintelligent leven omdat het niet slim is je eigen lucht te vervuilen."
De telescoop kan bovendien enkel vervuilende stoffen zien op een Aarde-achtige planeet die rond een witte dwergster cirkelt, een ster aan het einde van zijn levensduur. In dat scenario zijn de signalen uit de atmosfeer optimaal. Om vervuiling te vinden op een Aarde-achtige planeet die om een zonachtige ster wentelt, zou een nog krachtiger telescoop nodig zijn.
Daarnaast kunnen sommige vervuilende stoffen 50.000 jaar in de atmosfeer blijven hangen. "Wanneer die stoffen aanwezig zijn, zou dat kunnen betekenen dat de buitenaardse wezens slimmer geworden zijn en schoon schip gemaakt hebben", zeggen de onderzoekers. "Of dat ze hun eigen beschaving vernietigd hebben. In dat laatste geval is het een waarschuwing voor ons om onze eigen planeet beter te beginnen beheren."
Na een reis van meer dan tien jaar komt de Europese sonde Rosetta woensdag aan bij de komeet 67P/Churyumov-Gerasimenko met aan boord ook Belgisch instrumentarium en Belgische know-how, zo heeft het Belgisch Instituut voor Ruimte-Aëronomie (BIRA) vandaag meegedeeld.
De Rosetta van het Europees Ruimtevaartbureau ESA vertrok op 2 maart 2004 met een Ariane-raket en legde al meer dan 6,4 miljard km af. Technici hebben de snelheid van de onbemande sonde ondertussen afgeremd tot zowat 2.800 km per uur voor het rendez-vous tot 100 km afstand van de komeet. Bedoeling is informatie te vergaren over het gedrag en de samenstelling van het hemellichaam, wat meer moet leren over het ontstaan van ons zonnestelsel.
Een komeet is een hemellichaam dat zich in een baan rond de Zon bevindt en enkele kilometer groot is. Een komeet kan gezien worden als een vuile sneeuwbal die ijs en stof bevat. Dicht bij de zon warmt deze vuile sneeuwbal op, zodat gas en stof vrijkomen, en een atmosfeer vormen. De typische komeetstaart ontstaat door de wisselwerking van dat gas en stof met de zon.
Haltervorm
Wetenschappers van het BIRA zijn vooral geïnteresseerd in de komeetatmosfeer. Daartoe heeft het federaal instituut op het plateau van Ukkel onder leiding van de universiteit van Bern en samen met andere internationale partners het ROSINA (Rosetta Orbiter Spectrometer for Ion and Neutral Analysis) instrument gebouwd. Dit zal de samenstelling van de komeetatmosfeer meten. De processen daar zijn ook belangrijk in de hoge aardatmosfeer.
Sinds eind juni 2014 stuurt Rosetta reeds beelden van de komeet door en die waren volgens het BIRA al een revelatie op zich: de komeet blijkt een haltervorm te hebben. Ondertussen kan men ook al lichtverstrooiing in de ijle komeetatmosfeer waarnemen.
Van industriële zijde zijn de Belgische bedrijven Thales Alenia Space Belgium, Amos, Nexans Harnesses, Logica, Spacebel en Rhea bij Rosetta betrokken.
De sonde zal later ook de lander Philae naar het komeetoppervlak sturen, een primeur in de ruimtevaart.

Op begraafplaatsen overal ter wereld zijn langgerekte schedels gevonden. Veel zijn het resultaat van schedelvervorming, waarbij de schedel van vooral jonge kinderen werd vastgebonden om zijn vorm te veranderen en te verlengen. Een ander deel van de schedels is echter in mysterie gehuld. Is het mogelijk dat de misvormde schedels uit Paracas in Peru afkomstig zijn van een mensachtige soort die nog nooit is bestudeerd?
De vervormde schedels die aan de Peruaanse kust zijn gevonden, zijn gedateerd op 3000 tot 2000 jaar oud. Afgelopen februari is het eerste fragment van één van de schedels geanalyseerd door een geneticus, die concludeerde dat een aantal DNA-segmenten niet overeenkomen met het DNA van bekende mensachtige soorten uit het verleden.
Brien Foerster, assistent-directeur van het Historisch Museum in Paracas, heeft in de afgelopen jaren veel onderzoek gedaan naar langgerekte schedels. Volgens hem is vijf tot tien procent van de schedels het gevolg van opzettelijke schedelvervorming. Door het afbinden van de schedels blijft normaal gesproken een afgevlakt oppervlak achter op een deel van de schedel, maar sommige van de schedels die Foerster heeft gezien, ogen natuurlijk.
De schedel van Achnaton, één van de meest mysterieuze koningen van het oude Egypte, ziet er langgerekt uit. De Universiteit van Maryland organiseerde in 2008 een bijeenkomst om de theorieën over Achnaton te bespreken. Achnaton had niet alleen een langgerekte schedel, maar ook een lange nek, lange vingers, dikke dijen en een aantal vrouwelijke eigenschappen.
Irwin M. Braverman van de Yale-universiteit dacht dat Achnaton aan craniosynostose leed, wat slaat op voortijdige vergroeiing van schedelnaden. In de oude geschriften is niets te vinden over schedelvervorming in Egypte, maar toch staan ook de kinderen van Achnaton afgebeeld met een langgerekte schedel.
De vooraanstaande Canadese egyptoloog en archeoloog Donald B. Redford zei dat de vervormingen van Achnaton mogelijk zijn ontstaan na het derde jaar van zijn heerschappij, toen hij zonnegod Aton begon te aanbidden.
Schedelvervorming is wellicht door de Hunnen binnen Europa verspreid. Onderzoekers van de Universiteit van Debrecen in Hongarije publiceerden in april een studie in het Journal of Neurosurgery over langgerekte schedels die gevonden zijn in de Karpaten.
De onderzoekers zeiden dat de Hunnen het vervormen van schedels weer hadden overgenomen van de Alanen en de Turken. Zij kunnen dus niet worden gezien als de bedenkers van deze traditie. De onderzoekers schreven: “Het lijkt erop dat dit gebruik voor het eerst op de steppegrond van Kalmukkië is verschenen en zich door de migratie van de Hunnen via de Krim heeft verspreid naar Centraal- en West-Europa. A FORMER US marine has sensationally claimed that he has spent nearly a decade battling ALIENS on Mars.
The ex marine, who goes by the name of Captain Kaye, says that there are five human colonies on the Red Planet and he has spent 17 years fighting to protect them.
Serving in a space fleet known as the Earth Defense Force – that recruited military personnel from countries like America, Russia and China – the one-time ex-naval infantryman was trainee to fly a variety of bombers and Star Wars-style space fighters.
He then spent his time protecting the colonies from martians, who presumably wanted to take over and make the planet their own.
Captain Kaye's incredible testimony to ExoNews TV doesn't end with Mars, either.
Spacecraft training apparently took place on the MOON, as well as on Saturn's moon Titan and even in deep space.
His retirement ceremony after 20 years of service also took place on the moon, with guests including ex US Scretary of Defence Donald Rumsfield.

Après les trous sur terre, en voici de nouveaux! Je ne sais pas si ces informations sont crédibles. A chacun de se faire son opinion.
De nombreuses grottes et galeries souterraines ont récemment été mises en évidence sur le sol lunaire grâce à la sonde LRO (Lunar Reconnaissance Orbitery) de la NASA.
À en croire les dires de l'agence spatiale, ces cavités pourraient bien trouver toute leur utilité lors des prochaines missions habitées à destination de notre satellite naturel.. Alors que l'on pensait pratiquement tout savoir de la Lune, une récente découverte réalisée par la NASA est venue nous montrer que cet astre n'avait décidément pas fini de nous étonner.
En effet, la sonde Lunar Reconnaissance Orbitery (LRO) a mis en exergue le fait que certains des cratères caractéristiques de notre satellite seraient en fait reliés à des réseaux de grottes et de galeries souterraines.
Ainsi, en scannant seulement 40% de la surface de la Lune, la sonde aurait déjà mis en évidence pas moins de 200 de ces entrées mesurant entre 5 et 900 mètres de diamètre.
Il y a donc de fortes probabilités pour que de nombreuses autres cavités de ce type soient découvertes en analysant la portion restante du satellite. Une intense chaleur probablement à l'origine de ces formations Bien qu'il n'existe pas encore de réelle certitude quant à l'origine de ces grottes et galeries, l'hypothèse la plus probable serait qu'elles aient été formées suite à des impacts de météorites.
Les chocs auraient été si intenses que la chaleur ainsi engendrée aurait permis de faire fondre la roche qui se serait ensuite écoulée en creusant des galeries. Les vibrations causées par les impacts auraient quant à elles permis au sol de s'effondrer à certains endroits, laissant apparaître ces fameuses cavités repérées par la sonde LRO.
Des perspectives offertes dans le cadre d'une future mission habitée sur la Lune
Pour les scientifiques de la Nasa, ces grottes et galeries seraient un véritable atout pour les éventuelles futures missions lunaires habitées.
Elles offriraient effectivement une protection aux astronautes contre les rayonnements cosmiques et les chutes de météorites.
La mer Morte s'assèche à une vitesse incroyable en laissant d'énormes gouffres sur son passage. Ces profondeurs apparaissent comme de grands tunnels qui se multiplient dans la région. Les experts disent que ces énormes trous se forment à un rythme de presque un par jour, mais n'ont aucun moyen de savoir quand ou comment et où ils vont apparaître. Les estimations du magazine « Moment » suggèrent que, du côté israélien , il y a actuellement plus de 3000 puits autour de la Mer Morte. Cela se compare à seulement 40 enregistré en 1990, avec le premier tunnel qui apparaissait dans les années 1980. La mer Morte s'étend sur plus de 96 km du côté d' Israël, la Judée Samarie et la Jordanie. L'eau est 10 fois plus salée que l'océan Atlantique Nord. Cela signifie que les minéraux qui coulent et y demeurent. L'augmentation de la sécheresse entraîne chaque année un mètre de moins dans la mer Morte. Les puisards qui sont essentiellement en forme de cuvette forment un espace vide et créée une dépression.La dépression est le résultat d'une réaction entre l'eau douce et salée enterrées à un niveau en dessous de la surface de la terre.Lorsque l'eau fraîche dissout le sel, elle crée un vide, ce qui fait que la paysage autour et au-dessus peut s'effondrer soudainement.

Reindeer herders in Russia's Far North have discovered yet another mysterious giant hole about 30 kilometers away from a similar one found days earlier.
Located in the permafrost of the subarctic Siberian region of Yamal, which means "end of the earth" in the local Nenets language, both craters appear to have been formed in recent years and have icy lakes at their bases.
Scientists who examined the first hole theorized that it could have been created when a mixture of water, salt and gas exploded underground, the Siberian Times news site reported.
The area, which has one of Russia's richest deposits of natural gas, was covered by sea about 10,000 years ago, and vast salt deposits were left behind.
"Global warming, causing an alarming melt in the ice under the soil, released gas causing an effect like the popping of a Champagne cork," the news report said, citing an expert at the Subarctic Scientific Research Center.
The first hole is estimated to be about 50 meters wide and 70 meters deep, with water from melting permafrost cascading down its sides into the icy deposit below.
The second hole is "exactly" like the first one, but "much smaller," local lawmaker Mikhail Lapsui told the Interfax-Ural news agency. "Inside the crater itself, snow can be seen."
Scientists have discovered a mysterious giant hole that has appeared in one of Russia's most isolated northernmost regions, state television reported.
A preliminary study on Thursday determined that the gaping crater, about 100 meters in diameter, was created by a natural event — but not a meteorite impact.
There were no signs that the hole was artificially made, and the radiation level at the site was not dangerous, a team of scientists from Siberia's Institute of the Earth Cryosphere said in a press release quoted by Russian media.
Speculation has swirled about how the hole could have been created — including theories of an unknown meteorite or even alien beings — after a video of the mysterious site went viral on YouTube last week.
The hole is located in the vast region of Yamal, which means "the end of the Earth" in the local Nenets language. Straddling the Arctic Circle, the region is a place where temperatures plummet to negative 50 degrees Celsius and the sun barely rises in winter.
Inhabited by indigenous reindeer herders, Yamal is one of Russia's richest regions in natural gas. The hole was found near the Bovanentsky gas field, leading to speculation that it could have been caused by an underground explosion.
TV Zvezda, broadcast by the Defense Ministry, reported that the person who shot the video said the hole appeared to have been caused from below and that the darker soil around its top indicated the effect of high temperatures.
Ma première idée a été de suspecter des forages (la région est riche en hydrocarbures exploités par Gazprom) mais les photos aériennes ne montrent aucune trace de roues ou de chantier autour des trous. L'hypothèse de météorites ne tient pas davantage, pour des raisons à la fois statistiques (il y a plusieurs trous identiques, sinon par le diamètre, dans un rayon restreint d'une centaine de km) et de configuration physique.On remarque clairement des formes d'éjectas autour des trous, ce qui semble signer un creusement circonscrit (voir photo jointe). Qu'est-ce que c'est que ces trous ? Pour l'instant les scientifiques russes n'ont que des questions. En admettant que ces formations ne soient pas naturelles, n'est-on pas en droitde se demander : qui cherche quoi dans le permafrost sibérien ?

«Le 13 juillet, j’ai reçu un appel téléphonique m’annonçant la découverte d’un «trou» sur la plaine de la péninsule de Yamal. Le 16 juillet, nous partions en mission pour l’étudier.» Marina Leibman est chercheuse à l’Institut de la cryosphère terrestre à l’Académie des sciences russes et spécialiste de la Sibérie occidentale. Elle étudie depuis près de trente ans le sol gelé de manière permanente sous ces latitudes, appelé pergélisol, dans la région de Yamal où un premier cratère géant de 30 mètres de diamètre et 70 mètres de profondeur a été récemment observé. Deux autres cratères ont été découverts: un d’environ 15 m de diamètre dans la région de Taz, plus à l’est, et un de 4 m de large au nord, dans la péninsule de Taymyr.

L'analyse des échantillons de sol qu'ils avaient collectés dans le cratère et à distance de l’orifice a rapidement permis d'écarter les hypothèses qui évoquaient déjà une météorite et même un missile. «Il ne s’agit pas du résultat d’activités humaines ou d’une explosion car il n’y a aucune trace d’un événement à haute température comme des cendres, explique la chercheuse. Par contre, la couche supérieure du cratère montre un taux particulièrement élevé de méthane, un peu moins de 10%.» Le pergélisol est riche en argile et en matière organique. Or, quand la température augmente et que le sol gelé fond, ces composés sont dégradés par des bactéries qui produisent du méthane.
«Je pense que les trous résultent d’un «choc thermique» libérant une grande quantité de méthane», suggère Marina Leibman. Un avis partagé par Anna Kurchatova, chercheuse au Centre de recherche subarctique. Dans un commentaire au journal The Siberian Times, elle accuse directement le réchauffement climatique d’entraîner une fonte «alarmante» de la glace souterraine générant le relargage explosif de gaz, mélangé à de l’eau et du sel, un peu à la manière d'une giclée de champagne à l'ouverture d'une bouteille.
