Dit is ons nieuw hondje Kira, een kruising van een waterhond en een Podenko. Ze is sinds 7 februari 2024 bij ons en druk bezig ons hart te veroveren. Het is een lief, aanhankelijk hondje, dat zich op een week snel aan ons heeft aangepast. Ze is heel vinnig en nieuwsgierig, een heel ander hondje dan Noleke.

This is our new dog Kira, a cross between a water dog and a Podenko. She has been with us since February 7, 2024 and is busy winning our hearts. She is a sweet, affectionate dog who quickly adapted to us within a week. She is very quick and curious, a very different dog than Noleke.

    True story

    At 2 pm in the afternoon, I had a booked deliverance from C&W Food on wheels (or something like that). At 1:55 pm, five minutes before the expected deliverance I had to use the bathroom. I felt pretty stressed at the time, didn’t want to make the meeting feel awkward. I then went to the kitchen and watch the clock on the microwave oven, still “1:55”. I started doing the dishes and calculated that the amount of cups and plates would take at least 12 minutes to finish. All the time, I was concentrated at the doorbell. I didn’t want to miss the deliverence. As soon as the dishes were done I watched the clock again. “1:55”. I thought that it must have stopped, so I went out and picked up my cellphone, “1:55”, it felt weird but I didn’t mind since they both showed the same time. I then filled the washing machine with new clothes and hung the others, cleaned the floors on the first level and prepared lunch. It started to feel like I got stuck in time somehow. I went back to the clock on the microwave oven and saw that i still had one minute to go before 2:00pm. I just put everything down and kept staring at the clock. Suddenly it turned and a couple of seconds later the doorbell rang

    To find out what I believed happened, I used Einstein’s Thought Experiment

    This is a clever way to use your mind. Einstein used it to start with as an experiment lead by two German scientists. The point was that Einstein actually made most of his inventions without a laboratory.

    This was what I came up with:

    A wormhole can do two things, it can speed time up or slow it down. If time is slowed down, we can walk a thousand miles in only a minute. In the wormhole, we manage to use each fraction of a second as a minute and it won’t affect us at all. If we speed ourselves up with the help of a machine like a spaceship, the fraction of the minute will become a fraction of the fraction. Still on the outside of the wormhole, time passes normal. This means, as long as you’re in a wormhole, time will not pass or time will pass very little. The second wormhole is the opposite and speed time up. You have surely felt it at some point, since it is the easiest wormhole to catch. You see a vase falling from the table only twenty centimeters from your hand, you reach out and for some reason, you are far too slow”.

    If traveling inside a wormhole

    …we will see particles that can not be seen when going slow. Going only fast without a wormhole though, will not help. A wormhole is like a current in a sea where you travel faster when accelerating on it. Normally we see time, as the event of the sun going up and down and measure everything in it like it has a weight but not a substance. (rep: weight but NO substance) If it has a weight, you think you can lower it and go back but, if you also see the substance you will understand that for anything to go back, the substance must follow. If any current change direction, it will still be a running forward.

    So why did I think this, this is not what scientists claim a wormhole is

    Well, we have a built-in atomic clock. “The time it takes for each atom to fall apart or decay”. This is best known in nuclear waste. Let see, if the clock in my kitchen slowed down, everything outside of it, must have done so too. All the headlines in every tabloid would have read “Time slowed down Thursday afternoon 2012, say’s scientists…”.

    Then again, those who were not aware of time as I was, wouldn’t have noticed.

    Silly headlines. No, for this to occur I myself must have hit a stream somehow and the clock would be on the “outside” of the wormhole. Simply put it, I must have hit a fluctuation in the constant particle swarm around us controlled by the decay of atoms, that is controlling our life cycle clock. Like a bubble of air in the sea. This bubble can only be allowed to affect MY journey because if it affects all, we wouldn’t notice any difference.

    Let’s say that the decay of the carbon atom was different, this is what all life is based on. Then our conditions would change. Ex:

    On a football field this morning, a game was played for fun by two young adults. The football that they used wasn’t of the best material and all in all, they estimated that the game could continue for 30 minutes before the football was trashed. The skin seemed to decay and dry up. Suddenly it began to rain and the football got a kind of slippery surface. The young two who was playing, didn’t care much but noticed that the ball lasted for 45 minutes in total.

    Because of the wet sphere around the ball, the decay was delayed.  Now what if the decay was delayed in the atoms around us because of that what was needed went missing or changed? Would we also be affected by the particle change?

    During these 5 minutes when I managed to clean the entire house, I keep wondering – what would it have looked like if these minutes had been recorded on film? I am asking, what would a “time traveler” look like from the outside?

    What DO scientists say about this

    The easiest way to explain a wormhole is to mark A) on one end of a napkin and B) on the other. Put the napkin on your lawn, take a pencil and press the middle of the napkin down in the ground. Fair enough, A) and B) are now very close. This is a wormhole, meaning that the universe are bent making a smaller distance .

    wormhole is a hypothetical topological feature that would fundamentally be a shortcut through space-time. A wormhole is much like a tunnel with two ends, each in separate points in space-time”.

    In my last article, Thomas suggested that the transparent UFO’s as in “unidentified flying objects” could be from another time or maybe a different dimension. I think it is reasonably a hypothetical truth. I mean by this, talking about that what we know nothing of or very little about, any answer could be hypothetically true.

    This can become a wild goose chase if not careful, although looking for the truth no thought is too big. It is however up to each and one of us to find out what really happened in the end and with more facts, less room is left for guessing.

    Mars: New hypothesis on the origin of the megafloods

    A study published in Scientific Reports puts forward a new explanation for the Martian megafloods: enormous discharges of subterranean water that dug out the biggest flood channels in the solar system over 3 billion years ago.

    For many years it was thought that these megafloods were caused by the release of a deep global hydrosphere in the Martian subsoil. However, the research conducted by J. P. Alexis Rodríguez of the Planetary Science Institute (PSI-USA), with the participation of Rogelio Linares and Mario Zarroca of the Department of Geology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), has revealed that their origin could have been vast quantities of sediment and ice deposited 450 million years before the floods.

    The findings from this project, which was partially supported by NASA funding for the PSI under its Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program, are detailed in the study entitled “Martian outflow channels: How did their source aquifers form, and why did they drain so quickly?”

    The article, co-authored by the UAB Geology Department members mentioned above, describes how the sediments carried by rivers and glaciers filled up enormous canyons below an ancient ocean located in the Northern Lowlands, and how it was the release of the water trapped in these buried sediments that caused the megafloods, whose effects we can observe in the present.

    The canyons filled up, the ocean disappeared and the planet surface remained frozen for around 450 million years. Subsequently, 3200 million years ago, the heat from lava beneath the canyons thawed the ice trapped in the sediments and enormous rivers of subterranean water spread over hundreds of kilometres, before eventually bursting out on to the now-dry surface and causing the megafloods.

    In the words of the Geology Department researchers, “Our research suggests that, given that the process was regional rather than global, there could still be large reservoirs of subterranean water trapped under the surface of Mars, in the areas around the old northern ocean, or in other parts of the planet where seas and lakes formed at the same time.” “Traces of ancient environments capable of sustaining life forms similar to those on Earth could have been preserved in sub-surface materials that are now exposed,” claim R. Linares and M. Zarroca. “The results obtained could have clear implications both for exobiological research and for future human activity on Mars.”

    To illustrate the scale of the Martian megafloods, the UAB researchers have estimated the effect they would have on Europe, quantifying it as around 2,500,000 km2.

    UFO Hunters ‘Discover’ Crashed Alien UFO Drone In NASA Mars Rover Photo

    Online alien and UFO hunters claim they have sighted a UFO drone in a photo of the Gale Crater region of Mars captured by a NASA Mars rover. According to the YouTube UFO hunter Paranormal Crucible, a photo of the Martian terrain snapped by a Mars rover — presumably Curiosity — on Sol 64 shows an object that looks like a metallic chunk of machinery dumped on the Martian surface. Paranormal Crucible notes that the discovery was first made a few years back. But in a new set of photos uploaded to YouTube on November 1, 2015, the UFO hunter revisits the remarkable discovery that set the entire online UFO community buzzing with excitement when it was first discovered. This time around, Paranormal Crucible attempts to “clean up the photo” by enhancing features of the alleged metallic object that could help UFO researchers gain fresh insights and “shed new light” into its nature and construction. UFO Sightings Daily editor Scott Waring points out that the “cleaned up photo” gives a “new perspective” by enhancing features that give clues about what the object looked like when it was made, and what it was probably used for.

    “I really like his cleaned up photo of the object and his new perspective. It gives us a chance to look at it as it was when it was made, and how it might have been used.”

    Scott Waring agrees with Paranormal Crucible that the photographic evidence suggests an object of “intelligent design,” photographed presumably by Curiosity rover, in the Gale Crater region.

    According to Paranormal Crucible, “In my opinion this object is an extraterrestrial drone possibly built by the indigenous Martian populace or perhaps it was deployed by an off world alien species who were exploring the Martian surface.”

    However, other UFO enthusiasts who have studied the image claim that the object could be part of a bigger spacecraft, such as a component of a spacecraft’s engine or propulsion system.

    Regardless, UFO and Mars anomaly hunters are unanimous that millions of years ago, Mars was home to indigenous alien races with advanced culture and civilization. While some Mars anomaly hunters believe that the ancient civilizations reached sufficient levels of scientific and technological development to build flying machines and possibly space ships, others insist that ancient Mars civilizations attained only modest standards of scientific and technological development.

    But all anomaly hunters agree that ancient Martians created a young bustling civilization that generated sufficient “noise” to attract the attention of hostile aliens possessing advanced nuclear technological culture. The hostile aliens wiped out the bustling Mars civilizations by detonating a series of powerful thermonuclear devices.

    UFO Hunters ‘Discover’ Crashed Alien UFO Drone In NASA Mars Rover Photo

    Online alien and UFO hunters claim they have sighted a UFO drone in a photo of the Gale Crater region of Mars captured by a NASA Mars rover. According to the YouTube UFO hunter Paranormal Crucible, a photo of the Martian terrain snapped by a Mars rover — presumably Curiosity — on Sol 64 shows an object that looks like a metallic chunk of machinery dumped on the Martian surface. Paranormal Crucible notes that the discovery was first made a few years back. But in a new set of photos uploaded to YouTube on November 1, 2015, the UFO hunter revisits the remarkable discovery that set the entire online UFO community buzzing with excitement when it was first discovered. This time around, Paranormal Crucible attempts to “clean up the photo” by enhancing features of the alleged metallic object that could help UFO researchers gain fresh insights and “shed new light” into its nature and construction. UFO Sightings Daily editor Scott Waring points out that the “cleaned up photo” gives a “new perspective” by enhancing features that give clues about what the object looked like when it was made, and what it was probably used for.

    I really like his cleaned up photo of the object and his new perspective. It gives us a chance to look at it as it was when it was made, and how it might have been used.

    Scott Waring agrees with Paranormal Crucible that the photographic evidence suggests an object of “intelligent design,” photographed presumably by Curiosity rover, in the Gale Crater region.

    According to Paranormal Crucible, “In my opinion this object is an extraterrestrial drone possibly built by the indigenous Martian populace or perhaps it was deployed by an off world alien species who were exploring the Martian surface.”

    However, other UFO enthusiasts who have studied the image claim that the object could be part of a bigger spacecraft, such as a component of a spacecraft’s engine or propulsion system.

    Regardless, UFO and Mars anomaly hunters are unanimous that millions of years ago, Mars was home to indigenous alien races with advanced culture and civilization. While some Mars anomaly hunters believe that the ancient civilizations reached sufficient levels of scientific and technological development to build flying machines and possibly space ships, others insist that ancient Mars civilizations attained only modest standards of scientific and technological development.

    Mars: New hypothesis on the origin of the megafloods

    A study published in Scientific Reports puts forward a new explanation for the Martian megafloods: enormous discharges of subterranean water that dug out the biggest flood channels in the solar system over 3 billion years ago.

    For many years it was thought that these megafloods were caused by the release of a deep global hydrosphere in the Martian subsoil. However, the research conducted by J. P. Alexis Rodríguez of the Planetary Science Institute (PSI-USA), with the participation of Rogelio Linares and Mario Zarroca of the Department of Geology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB), has revealed that their origin could have been vast quantities of sediment and ice deposited 450 million years before the floods.

    The findings from this project, which was partially supported by NASA funding for the PSI under its Planetary Geology and Geophysics Program, are detailed in the study entitled “Martian outflow channels: How did their source aquifers form, and why did they drain so quickly?”

    The article, co-authored by the UAB Geology Department members mentioned above, describes how the sediments carried by rivers and glaciers filled up enormous canyons below an ancient ocean located in the Northern Lowlands, and how it was the release of the water trapped in these buried sediments that caused the megafloods, whose effects we can observe in the present.

    The canyons filled up, the ocean disappeared and the planet surface remained frozen for around 450 million years. Subsequently, 3200 million years ago, the heat from lava beneath the canyons thawed the ice trapped in the sediments and enormous rivers of subterranean water spread over hundreds of kilometres, before eventually bursting out on to the now-dry surface and causing the megafloods.

    In the words of the Geology Department researchers, “Our research suggests that, given that the process was regional rather than global, there could still be large reservoirs of subterranean water trapped under the surface of Mars, in the areas around the old northern ocean, or in other parts of the planet where seas and lakes formed at the same time.” “Traces of ancient environments capable of sustaining life forms similar to those on Earth could have been preserved in sub-surface materials that are now exposed,” claim R. Linares and M. Zarroca. “The results obtained could have clear implications both for exobiological research and for future human activity on Mars.”

    To illustrate the scale of the Martian megafloods, the UAB researchers have estimated the effect they would have on Europe, quantifying it as around 2,500,000 km2.

    Dawn team shares new maps and insights about Ceres

    Mysteries and insights about Ceres are being discussed this week at the European Planetary Science Conference in Nantes, France. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is providing scientists with tantalizing views and other data about the intriguing dwarf planet that they continue to analyze.

    “Ceres continues to amaze, yet puzzle us, as we examine our multitude of images, spectra and now energetic particle bursts,” said Chris Russell, Dawn principal investigator at the University of California, Los Angeles.

    A new color-coded topographic map shows more than a dozen recently approved names for features on Ceres, all eponymous for agricultural spirits, deities and festivals from cultures around the world. These include Jaja, after the Abkhazian harvest goddess, and Ernutet, after the cobra-headed Egyptian harvest goddess. A 12-mile (20-kilometer) diameter mountain near Ceres’ north pole is now called Ysolo Mons, for an Albanian festival that marks the first day of the eggplant harvest.

    Another new Ceres map, in false color, enhances compositional differences present on the surface. The variations are more subtle than on Vesta, Dawn’s previous port of call. Color-coded topographic images of Occator (oh-KAH-tor) crater, home of Ceres’ brightest spots, and a puzzling, cone-shaped 6-mile-high (4-kilometer-high) mountain, are also available. Scientists are still trying to identify processes that could produce these and other unique Cerean phenomena.

    “The irregular shapes of craters on Ceres are especially interesting, resembling craters we see on Saturn’s icy moon Rhea,” said Carol Raymond, Dawn’s deputy principal investigator based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. “They are very different from the bowl-shaped craters on Vesta.”

    A surprising bonus observation came from Dawn’s gamma ray and neutron spectrometer. The instrument detected three bursts of energetic electrons that may result from the interaction between Ceres and radiation from the sun. The observation isn’t yet fully understood, but may be important in forming a complete picture of Ceres.

    “This is a very unexpected observation for which we are now testing hypotheses,” Russell said.

    Dawn is currently orbiting Ceres at an altitude of 915 miles (1,470 kilometers), and the spacecraft will image the entire surface of the dwarf planet up to six times in this phase of the mission. Each imaging cycle takes 11 days.

    Starting in October and continuing into December, Dawn will descend to its lowest and final orbit, an altitude of 230 miles (375 kilometers). The spacecraft will continue imaging Ceres and taking other data at higher resolutions than ever before at this last orbit. It will remain operational at least through mid-2016.

    Dawn made history as the first mission to reach a dwarf planet, and the first to orbit two distinct extraterrestrial targets, when it arrived at Ceres on March 6, 2015. It conducted extensive observations of Vesta in 2011 and 2012.

    Dawn’s mission is managed by JPL for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate’s Discovery Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science.     Converging black holes in Virgo constellation

    Earlier this year, astronomers discovered what appeared to be a pair of supermassive black holes circling toward a collision so powerful it would send a burst of gravitational waves surging through the fabric of space-time itself.

    Now, in a study in the journal Nature, astronomers at Columbia University provide additional evidence that a pair of closely orbiting black holes is causing the rhythmic flashes of light coming from quasar PG 1302-102.

    Based on calculations of the pair’s mass–together, and relative to each other–the researchers go on to predict a smashup 100,000 years from now, an impossibly long time to humans but the blink of an eye to a star or black hole. Spiraling together 3.5 billion light-years away, deep in the Virgo constellation, the pair is separated by a mere light-week. By contrast, the closest previously confirmed black hole pair is separated by 20 light-years.

    “This is the closest we’ve come to observing two black holes on their way to a massive collision,” said the study’s senior author, Zoltan Haiman, an astronomer at Columbia. “Watching this process reach its culmination can tell us whether black holes and galaxies grow at the same rate, and ultimately test a fundamental property of space-time: its ability to carry vibrations called gravitational waves, produced in the last, most violent, stage of the merger.”

    At the center of most giant galaxies, including our own Milky Way, lies a supermassive black hole so dense that not even light can escape. Over time, black holes grow bigger–millions to billions times more massive than the sun–by gobbling up stars, galaxies and even other black holes.

    A supermassive black hole about to cannibalize its own can be detected by the mysterious flickering of a quasar–the beacon of light produced by black holes as they burn through gas and dust swirling around them. Normally, quasars brighten and dim randomly, but when two black holes are on the verge of uniting, the quasar appears to flicker at regular intervals, like a light bulb on timer.

    Recently, a team led by Matthew Graham, a computational astronomer at the California Institute of Technology, designed an algorithm to pick out repeating light signals from 247,000 quasars monitored by telescopes in Arizona and Australia. Of the 20 pairs of black hole candidates discovered, they focused on the most compelling bright quasar– PG 1302-102. In a January study in Nature, they showed that PG 1302-102 appeared to brighten by 14 percent every five years, indicating the pair was less than a tenth of a light-year apart.

    Intrigued, Haiman and his colleagues wondered if they could build a theoretical model to explain the repeating signal. If the black holes were as close as predicted, one had to be circling a much larger counterpart at nearly a tenth of the speed of light, they hypothesized. At that speed, the smaller black hole would appear to brighten as it approached Earth’s line of sight under the relativistic Doppler beaming effect.

    If correct, they predicted they would find a five-year cycle in the quasar’s ultraviolet emissions–only two-and-a-half times more variable in its intensity. Analyzing UV observations collected by NASA’s Hubble and GALEX space telescopes they found exactly that.

    Previous explanations for the repeating signal include a warp in the debris disks orbiting the black holes, a wobble in the axis of one black hole and a lopsided debris disk formed as one black hole draws material off the other–all creating the impression of a periodic flicker from Earth.

    The new study also offers a new technique for investigating other converging black holes, the researchers said. By estimating the combined and relative mass of PG 1302-102’s black holes, they narrow down the pair’s predicted crash time to between 20,000 and 350,000 years from now with a best estimate of 100,000 years. (The predicted crash time by Graham’s team was 10,000 to several million years from now with a best estimate of 250,000 years).

    “We can start to put numbers on the rates that black holes come together and build up into larger black holes, and use what we’re learning to search for more black holes pairs,” said study coauthor David Schiminovich, an astronomer at Columbia.

    An uptick in the number of black hole binary discoveries has made astronomers hopeful that a collision could be detected in the next decade. This summer, Graham and his colleagues reported another 90 candidates, while astronomers at Columbia expect to soon unveil discoveries of their own from data collected at California’s Palomar Observatory.

    With more black holes to watch, the chance of witnessing a crash and the gravitational waves predicted, but not yet detected, by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, grows.

    “The detection of gravitational waves lets us probe the secrets of gravity and test Einstein’s theory in the most extreme environment in our universe–black holes,” said the study’s lead author, Daniel D’Orazio, a graduate student at Columbia. “Getting there is a holy grail of our field.”

    Radar images provide details on Halloween asteroid

    The highest-resolution radar images of asteroid 2015 TB145’s safe flyby of Earth have been processed and yield new information about its surface features.

    To obtain these highest-resolution radar images of the asteroid, scientists used the 230-foot (70-meter) DSS-14 antenna at Goldstone, California, to transmit high-power microwaves toward the asteroid. The signal bounced off the asteroid, and its radar echoes were received by the National Radio Astronomy Observatory’s (NRAO) 100-meter (330-foot) Green Bank Telescope in West Virginia. The radar images achieve a spatial resolution as fine as 13 feet (4 meters) per pixel.

    The radar images were taken as the asteroid flew past Earth on October 31 at 1 p.m. EDT at about 1.3 lunar distances (300,000 miles, or 480,000 kilometers) from Earth. Asteroid 2015 TB145 is spherical in shape and approximately 2,000 feet (600 meters) in diameter.

    “The radar images of asteroid 2015 TB145 show portions of the surface not seen previously and reveal pronounced concavities, bright spots that might be boulders, and other complex features that could be ridges,” said Lance Benner of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, who leads NASA’s asteroid radar research program. “The images look distinctly different from the Arecibo radar images obtained on October 30 and are probably the result of seeing the asteroid from a different perspective in its three-hour rotation period.”

    “Working with our observatory partners, we were able to get our resolution down to less than 13 feet (four meters) per pixel,” said Shantanu Naidu, a postdoctoral student at the California Institute of Technology in Pasadena, and a member of the radar team. “It is a truly remarkable achievement, one which we will later be able to apply when future flyby opportunities present themselves.”

    The next time that asteroid 2015 TB145 will be in Earth’s neighborhood will be in September 2018, when it will make a distant pass at about 24 million miles (38 million kilometers), or about a quarter the distance between Earth and Sun.

    Radar is a powerful technique for studying an asteroid’s size, shape, rotation, surface features and surface roughness, and for improving the calculation of asteroid orbits. Radar measurements of asteroid distances and velocities often enable computation of asteroid orbits much further into the future than would be possible otherwise.

    The 100-meter GBT is the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. Its location in the National Radio Quiet Zone and the West Virginia Radio Astronomy Zone protects the incredibly sensitive telescope from unwanted radio interference, enabling it to perform unique observations.

    In the words of the Geology Department researchers, “Our research suggests that, given that the process was regional rather than global, there could still be large reservoirs of subterranean water trapped under the surface of Mars, in the areas around the old northern ocean, or in other parts of the planet where seas and lakes formed at the same time.” “Traces of ancient environments capable of sustaining life forms similar to those on Earth could have been preserved in sub-surface materials that are now exposed,” claim R. Linares and M. Zarroca. “The results obtained could have clear implications both for exobiological research and for future human activity on Mars.”

    UFO Hunters ‘Discover’ Crashed Alien UFO Drone In NASA Mars Rover Photo

    Online alien and UFO hunters claim they have sighted a UFO drone in a photo of the Gale Crater region of Mars captured by a NASA Mars rover. According to the YouTube UFO hunter Paranormal Crucible, a photo of the Martian terrain snapped by a Mars rover — presumably Curiosity — on Sol 64 shows an object that looks like a metallic chunk of machinery dumped on the Martian surface. Paranormal Crucible notes that the discovery was first made a few years back. But in a new set of photos uploaded to YouTube on November 1, 2015, the UFO hunter revisits the remarkable discovery that set the entire online UFO community buzzing with excitement when it was first discovered. This time around, Paranormal Crucible attempts to “clean up the photo” by enhancing features of the alleged metallic object that could help UFO researchers gain fresh insights and “shed new light” into its nature and construction. UFO Sightings Daily editor Scott Waring points out that the “cleaned up photo” gives a “new perspective” by enhancing features that give clues about what the object looked like when it was made, and what it was probably used for.

    • “I really like his cleaned up photo of the object and his new perspective. It gives us a chance to look at it as it was when it was made, and how it might have been used.

    Scott Waring agrees with Paranormal Crucible that the photographic evidence suggests an object of “intelligent design,” photographed presumably by Curiosity rover, in the Gale Crater region.

    According to Paranormal Crucible, “In my opinion this object is an extraterrestrial drone possibly built by the indigenous Martian populace or perhaps it was deployed by an off world alien species who were exploring the Martian surface.”

    However, other UFO enthusiasts who have studied the image claim that the object could be part of a bigger spacecraft, such as a component of a spacecraft’s engine or propulsion system.

     Regardless, UFO and Mars anomaly hunters are unanimous that millions of years ago, Mars was home to indigenous alien races with advanced culture and civilization. While some Mars anomaly hunters believe that the ancient civilizations reached sufficient levels of scientific and technological development to build flying machines and possibly space ships, others insist that ancient Mars civilizations attained only modest standards of scientific and technological development.

    But all anomaly hunters agree that ancient Martians created a young bustling civilization that generated sufficient “noise” to attract the attention of hostile aliens possessing advanced nuclear technological culture. The hostile aliens wiped out the bustling Mars civilizations by detonating a series of powerful thermonuclear devices.

    These startling claims about Mars civilization were first made by a U.S. physicist, Dr. John Brandenburg, who obtained his Ph.D. from the University of California, Davis.

    In a paper, titled “Evidence of Massive Thermonuclear Explosions in Mars Past, The Cydonian Hypothesis and Fermi’s Paradox,” presented at the 2014 Annual Fall meeting of the American Physical Society Prairie Section in Monmouth, Illinois, Brandenburg argued that data from gamma ray spectrometry conducted by NASA orbiters show evidence of radiation fallout consistent with two massive nuclear explosions on Mars. The explosions occurred on two sites on Mars where two civilizations — the Cydonian and Utopian — flourished millions of years ago, according to Brandenburg.

    • Taken together, the data requires that the hypothesis of Mars as the site of an ancient planetary nuclear massacre must now be considered. Fermi’s Paradox, the unexpected silence of the stars, may be solved at Mars. Providentially, we are forewarned of this possible aspect of the cosmos.”

    Mars anomaly hunters claim that evidence of eroded archaeological remains on Mars — including technological artifacts — support Brandenburg’s claim that Mars was the site of bustling ancient civilizations and culture.

    UFO hunters have reported discovering remains of crashed UFOs on different sites on Mars.

    In March, Mars anomaly hunters Mars Moon Space Photo Zoom Club (MMSPZCreported sighting a flying saucer UFO abandoned on rugged Martian terrain in the Aram Chaos region of the planet.

    In August, 2015, Waring reported that he sighted in a photo of the Martian terrain, snapped by NASA’s Mars Curiosity rover, a black object that looked like a space shuttle.

    Some UFO enthusiasts compared the alleged spacecraft to a Star Destroyer from the Star Wars movie franchise.

    Wet paleoclimate of Mars revealed by ancient lakes at Gale Crater

    We have heard the Mars exploration mantra for more than a decade: follow the water. In a new paper published October 9, 2015, in the journal Science, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) team presents recent results of its quest to not just follow the water but to understand where it came from, and how long it lasted on the surface of Mars so long ago.

    The story that has unfolded is a wet one: Mars appears to have had a more massive atmosphere billions of years ago than it does today, with an active hydrosphere capable of storing water in long-lived lakes. The MSL team has concluded that this water helped to fill Gale Crater, the MSL rover Curiosity’s landing site, with sediment deposited as layers that formed the foundation for the mountain found in the middle of the crater today.

    Curiosity has been exploring Gale Crater, which is estimated to be between 3.8 billion and 3.6 billion years old, since August 2012. In mid-September 2014, the rover reached the foothills of Aeolis Mons, a three-mile-high layered mountain nicknamed “Mount Sharp” in honor of the late Caltech geologist Robert Sharp. Curiosity has been exploring the base of the mountain since then.

    “Observations from the rover suggest that a series of long-lived streams and lakes existed at some point between 3.8 billion to 3.3 billion years ago, delivering sediment that slowly built up the lower layers of Mount Sharp,” says Ashwin Vasavada (PhD ’98), MSL project scientist. “However, this series of long-lived lakes is not predicted by existing models of the ancient climate of Mars, which struggle to get temperatures above freezing,” he says.

    This mismatch between the predictions of Mars’s ancient climate that arise from models developed by paleoclimatologists and indications of the planet’s watery past, as interpreted by geologists, bears similarities to a century-old scientific conundrum–in this case, about Earth’s ancient past.

    At the time, geologists first began to recognize that the shapes of the continents matched each other, almost like scattered puzzle pieces, explains John Grotzinger, Caltech’s Fletcher Jones Professor of Geology, chair of the Division of Planetary and Geological Sciences, and lead author of the paper. “Aside from the shapes of the continents, geologists had paleontological evidence that fossil plants and animals in Africa and South America were closely related, as well as unique volcanic rocks suggestive of a common spatial origin. The problem was that the broad community of earth scientists could not come up with a physical mechanism to explain how the continents could plow their way through Earth’s mantle and drift apart. It seemed impossible. The missing component was plate tectonics,” he says. “In a possibly similar way, we are missing something important about Mars.”

    As Curiosity has trekked across Gale Crater, it has stopped to examine numerous areas of interest. All targets are imaged, and soil samples have been scooped from some; the rocks in a select few places have been drilled for samples. These samples are deposited into the rover’s onboard laboratories. Using data from these instruments, as well as visual imaging from the onboard cameras and spectroscopic analyses, MSL scientists have pieced together an increasingly coherent and compelling story about the evolution of this region of Mars.

    Before Curiosity landed on Mars, scientists proposed that Gale Crater had filled with layers of sediments. Some hypotheses were “dry,” implying that the sediments accumulated from wind-blown dust and sand, whereas others focused on the possibility that sediment layers were deposited in ancient streams and lakes. The latest results from Curiosity indicate that these wetter scenarios were correct for the lower portions of Mount Sharp. Based on the new analysis, the filling of at least the bottom layers of the mountain occurred mostly by ancient rivers and lakes.

    “During the traverse of Gale, we have noticed patterns in the geology where we saw evidence of ancient fast-moving streams with coarser gravel as well as places where streams appear to have emptied out into bodies of standing water,” Vasavada says. “The prediction was that we should start seeing water-deposited, fine-grained rocks closer to Mount Sharp. Now that we’ve arrived, we’re seeing finely laminated mudstones in abundance.” These silty layers in the strata are interpreted as ancient lake deposits.

    “These finely laminated mudstones are very similar to those we see on Earth,” says Woody Fischer, professor of geobiology at Caltech and coauthor of the paper. “The scale of lamination–which occurs both at millimeter and centimeter scale–represents the settling of plumes of fine sediment through a standing body of water. This is exactly what we see in rocks that represent ancient lakes on Earth. “The mudstone indicates the presence of bodies of standing water in the form of lakes that remained for long periods of time, possibly repeatedly expanding and contracting during hundreds to millions of years. These lakes deposited the sediment that eventually formed the lower portion of the mountain.

    “Paradoxically, where there is a mountain today there was once a basin, and it was sometimes filled with water,” says Grotzinger. “Curiosity has measured about 75 meters of sedimentary fill, but based on mapping data from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and images from Curiosity’s cameras, it appears that the water-transported sedimentary deposition could have extended at least 150-200 meters above the crater floor, and this equates to a duration of millions of years in which lakes could have been intermittently present within the Gale Crater basin” Grotzinger says. Furthermore, the total thickness of sedimentary deposits in Gale Crater that indicate interaction with water could extend higher still–up to perhaps 800 meters above the crater floor, and possibly representing tens of millions of years.

    But layers deposited above that level do not require water as an agent of deposition or alteration. “Above 800 meters, Mount Sharp shows no evidence of hydrated strata, and that is the bulk of what forms Mount Sharp. We see another 4,000 meters of nothing but dry strata,” Grotzinger says. He suggests that perhaps this segment of the crater’s history may have been dominated by eolian, or wind-driven, deposition, as was once imagined for the lower part explored by Curiosity. This occurred after the wet period that built up the base of the mountain.

    A lingering question surrounds the original source of the water that carried sediment into the crater. For flowing water to have existed on the surface, Mars must have had a thicker atmosphere and warmer climate than has been theorized for the time frame bookending the intense geological activity in Gale Crater. Evidence for this ancient, wetter climate exists in the rock record. However, current models of this paleoclimate–factoring in estimates of the early atmosphere’s mass, composition, and the amount of energy it received from the sun–come up, quite literally, dry. Those models indicate that the atmosphere of Mars could not have sustained large quantities of liquid water.

    Yet the rock record discovered at Gale Crater suggests a different scenario. “Whether it was snowfall or rain, you have geologic evidence for that moisture accumulating in the highlands of the Gale Crater rim,” Grotzinger says. In the case of Gale Crater, at least some of the water was supplied by the highlands that form the crater rim, but groundwater discharge–a standard explanation to reconcile wet geologic observations with dry paleoclimatic predictions–is unlikely in this area. “Right on the other side of Gale’s northern rim are the Northern Plains. Some have made the argument that there was a northern ocean sitting out there, and that’s one way to get the moisture that you need to match what we are seeing in the rocks.” Pinpointing the possible location of an ocean, however, does not help to explain how that water managed to exist as a liquid for extended periods of time on the surface.

    As climatologists try to develop new atmospheric models, help should be coming from the continuing explorations by Curiosity. “There are still many kilometers of Mars history to explore,” says Fischer. He thinks that some of the most exciting data yet may come in the next few years as Curiosity climbs higher on Mount Sharp. “The strata will reveal Gale’s early history, its story. We know there are rocks that were deposited underwater, in the lake. What is the chemistry of these rocks? That lake represented an interface between the water and the atmosphere, and should tell us important things about the environment of the time.”

    “We have tended to think of Mars as being simple,” adds Grotzinger. “We once thought of the earth as being simple, too. But the more you look into it, questions come up because you’re beginning to fathom the real complexity of what we see on Mars. This is a good time to go back to reevaluate all our assumptions. Something is missing somewhere.”

    Converging black holes in Virgo constellation

    Earlier this year, astronomers discovered what appeared to be a pair of supermassive black holes circling toward a collision so powerful it would send a burst of gravitational waves surging through the fabric of space-time itself.

    Now, in a study in the journal Nature, astronomers at Columbia University provide additional evidence that a pair of closely orbiting black holes is causing the rhythmic flashes of light coming from quasar PG 1302-102.

    Based on calculations of the pair’s mass–together, and relative to each other–the researchers go on to predict a smashup 100,000 years from now, an impossibly long time to humans but the blink of an eye to a star or black hole. Spiraling together 3.5 billion light-years away, deep in the Virgo constellation, the pair is separated by a mere light-week. By contrast, the closest previously confirmed black hole pair is separated by 20 light-years.

    “This is the closest we’ve come to observing two black holes on their way to a massive collision,” said the study’s senior author, Zoltan Haiman, an astronomer at Columbia. “Watching this process reach its culmination can tell us whether black holes and galaxies grow at the same rate, and ultimately test a fundamental property of space-time: its ability to carry vibrations called gravitational waves, produced in the last, most violent, stage of the merger.”

    At the center of most giant galaxies, including our own Milky Way, lies a supermassive black hole so dense that not even light can escape. Over time, black holes grow bigger–millions to billions times more massive than the sun–by gobbling up stars, galaxies and even other black holes.

    A supermassive black hole about to cannibalize its own can be detected by the mysterious flickering of a quasar–the beacon of light produced by black holes as they burn through gas and dust swirling around them. Normally, quasars brighten and dim randomly, but when two black holes are on the verge of uniting, the quasar appears to flicker at regular intervals, like a light bulb on timer.

    Recently, a team led by Matthew Graham, a computational astronomer at the California Institute of Technology, designed an algorithm to pick out repeating light signals from 247,000 quasars monitored by telescopes in Arizona and Australia. Of the 20 pairs of black hole candidates discovered, they focused on the most compelling bright quasar– PG 1302-102. In a January study in Nature, they showed that PG 1302-102 appeared to brighten by 14 percent every five years, indicating the pair was less than a tenth of a light-year apart.

    Intrigued, Haiman and his colleagues wondered if they could build a theoretical model to explain the repeating signal. If the black holes were as close as predicted, one had to be circling a much larger counterpart at nearly a tenth of the speed of light, they hypothesized. At that speed, the smaller black hole would appear to brighten as it approached Earth’s line of sight under the relativistic Doppler beaming effect.

    If correct, they predicted they would find a five-year cycle in the quasar’s ultraviolet emissions–only two-and-a-half times more variable in its intensity. Analyzing UV observations collected by NASA’s Hubble and GALEX space telescopes they found exactly that.

    Previous explanations for the repeating signal include a warp in the debris disks orbiting the black holes, a wobble in the axis of one black hole and a lopsided debris disk formed as one black hole draws material off the other–all creating the impression of a periodic flicker from Earth.

    The new study also offers a new technique for investigating other converging black holes, the researchers said. By estimating the combined and relative mass of PG 1302-102’s black holes, they narrow down the pair’s predicted crash time to between 20,000 and 350,000 years from now with a best estimate of 100,000 years. (The predicted crash time by Graham’s team was 10,000 to several million years from now with a best estimate of 250,000 years).

    “We can start to put numbers on the rates that black holes come together and build up into larger black holes, and use what we’re learning to search for more black holes pairs,” said study coauthor David Schiminovich, an astronomer at Columbia.

    An uptick in the number of black hole binary discoveries has made astronomers hopeful that a collision could be detected in the next decade. This summer, Graham and his colleagues reported another 90 candidates, while astronomers at Columbia expect to soon unveil discoveries of their own from data collected at California’s Palomar Observatory.

    With more black holes to watch, the chance of witnessing a crash and the gravitational waves predicted, but not yet detected, by Einstein’s general theory of relativity, grows.

    “The detection of gravitational waves lets us probe the secrets of gravity and test Einstein’s theory in the most extreme environment in our universe–black holes,” said the study’s lead author, Daniel D’Orazio, a graduate student at Columbia. “Getting there is a holy grail of our field.”

    Dawn team shares new maps and insights about Ceres

    Mysteries and insights about Ceres are being discussed this week at the European Planetary Science Conference in Nantes, France. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is providing scientists with tantalizing views and other data about the intriguing dwarf planet that they continue to analyze.

    “Ceres continues to amaze, yet puzzle us, as we examine our multitude of images, spectra and now energetic particle bursts,” said Chris Russell, Dawn principal investigator at the University of California, Los Angeles.

    A new color-coded topographic map shows more than a dozen recently approved names for features on Ceres, all eponymous for agricultural spirits, deities and festivals from cultures around the world. These include Jaja, after the Abkhazian harvest goddess, and Ernutet, after the cobra-headed Egyptian harvest goddess. A 12-mile (20-kilometer) diameter mountain near Ceres’ north pole is now called Ysolo Mons, for an Albanian festival that marks the first day of the eggplant harvest.

    Another new Ceres map, in false color, enhances compositional differences present on the surface. The variations are more subtle than on Vesta, Dawn’s previous port of call. Color-coded topographic images of Occator (oh-KAH-tor) crater, home of Ceres’ brightest spots, and a puzzling, cone-shaped 6-mile-high (4-kilometer-high) mountain, are also available. Scientists are still trying to identify processes that could produce these and other unique Cerean phenomena.

    “The irregular shapes of craters on Ceres are especially interesting, resembling craters we see on Saturn’s icy moon Rhea,” said Carol Raymond, Dawn’s deputy principal investigator based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. “They are very different from the bowl-shaped craters on Vesta.”

    A surprising bonus observation came from Dawn’s gamma ray and neutron spectrometer. The instrument detected three bursts of energetic electrons that may result from the interaction between Ceres and radiation from the sun. The observation isn’t yet fully understood, but may be important in forming a complete picture of Ceres.

    “This is a very unexpected observation for which we are now testing hypotheses,” Russell said.

    Dawn is currently orbiting Ceres at an altitude of 915 miles (1,470 kilometers), and the spacecraft will image the entire surface of the dwarf planet up to six times in this phase of the mission. Each imaging cycle takes 11 days.

    Starting in October and continuing into December, Dawn will descend to its lowest and final orbit, an altitude of 230 miles (375 kilometers). The spacecraft will continue imaging Ceres and taking other data at higher resolutions than ever before at this last orbit. It will remain operational at least through mid-2016.

    Dawn made history as the first mission to reach a dwarf planet, and the first to orbit two distinct extraterrestrial targets, when it arrived at Ceres on March 6, 2015. It conducted extensive observations of Vesta in 2011 and 2012.

    Dawn’s mission is managed by JPL for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate’s Discovery Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science. Orbital ATK Inc., in Dulles, Virginia, designed and built the spacecraft.     Wet paleoclimate of Mars revealed by ancient lakes at Gale Crater

    We have heard the Mars exploration mantra for more than a decade: follow the water. In a new paper published October 9, 2015, in the journal Science, the Mars Science Laboratory (MSL) team presents recent results of its quest to not just follow the water but to understand where it came from, and how long it lasted on the surface of Mars so long ago.

    The story that has unfolded is a wet one: Mars appears to have had a more massive atmosphere billions of years ago than it does today, with an active hydrosphere capable of storing water in long-lived lakes. The MSL team has concluded that this water helped to fill Gale Crater, the MSL rover Curiosity’s landing site, with sediment deposited as layers that formed the foundation for the mountain found in the middle of the crater today.

    Curiosity has been exploring Gale Crater, which is estimated to be between 3.8 billion and 3.6 billion years old, since August 2012. In mid-September 2014, the rover reached the foothills of Aeolis Mons, a three-mile-high layered mountain nicknamed “Mount Sharp” in honor of the late Caltech geologist Robert Sharp. Curiosity has been exploring the base of the mountain since then.

    “Observations from the rover suggest that a series of long-lived streams and lakes existed at some point between 3.8 billion to 3.3 billion years ago, delivering sediment that slowly built up the lower layers of Mount Sharp,” says Ashwin Vasavada (PhD ’98), MSL project scientist. “However, this series of long-lived lakes is not predicted by existing models of the ancient climate of Mars, which struggle to get temperatures above freezing,” he says.

    This mismatch between the predictions of Mars’s ancient climate that arise from models developed by paleoclimatologists and indications of the planet’s watery past, as interpreted by geologists, bears similarities to a century-old scientific conundrum–in this case, about Earth’s ancient past.

    At the time, geologists first began to recognize that the shapes of the continents matched each other, almost like scattered puzzle pieces, explains John Grotzinger, Caltech’s Fletcher Jones Professor of Geology, chair of the Division of Planetary and Geological Sciences, and lead author of the paper. “Aside from the shapes of the continents, geologists had paleontological evidence that fossil plants and animals in Africa and South America were closely related, as well as unique volcanic rocks suggestive of a common spatial origin. The problem was that the broad community of earth scientists could not come up with a physical mechanism to explain how the continents could plow their way through Earth’s mantle and drift apart. It seemed impossible. The missing component was plate tectonics,” he says. “In a possibly similar way, we are missing something important about Mars.”

    As Curiosity has trekked across Gale Crater, it has stopped to examine numerous areas of interest. All targets are imaged, and soil samples have been scooped from some; the rocks in a select few places have been drilled for samples. These samples are deposited into the rover’s onboard laboratories. Using data from these instruments, as well as visual imaging from the onboard cameras and spectroscopic analyses, MSL scientists have pieced together an increasingly coherent and compelling story about the evolution of this region of Mars.

    Before Curiosity landed on Mars, scientists proposed that Gale Crater had filled with layers of sediments. Some hypotheses were “dry,” implying that the sediments accumulated from wind-blown dust and sand, whereas others focused on the possibility that sediment layers were deposited in ancient streams and lakes. The latest results from Curiosity indicate that these wetter scenarios were correct for the lower portions of Mount Sharp. Based on the new analysis, the filling of at least the bottom layers of the mountain occurred mostly by ancient rivers and lakes.

    “During the traverse of Gale, we have noticed patterns in the geology where we saw evidence of ancient fast-moving streams with coarser gravel as well as places where streams appear to have emptied out into bodies of standing water,” Vasavada says. “The prediction was that we should start seeing water-deposited, fine-grained rocks closer to Mount Sharp. Now that we’ve arrived, we’re seeing finely laminated mudstones in abundance.” These silty layers in the strata are interpreted as ancient lake deposits.

    “These finely laminated mudstones are very similar to those we see on Earth,” says Woody Fischer, professor of geobiology at Caltech and coauthor of the paper. “The scale of lamination–which occurs both at millimeter and centimeter scale–represents the settling of plumes of fine sediment through a standing body of water. This is exactly what we see in rocks that represent ancient lakes on Earth. “The mudstone indicates the presence of bodies of standing water in the form of lakes that remained for long periods of time, possibly repeatedly expanding and contracting during hundreds to millions of years. These lakes deposited the sediment that eventually formed the lower portion of the mountain.

    “Paradoxically, where there is a mountain today there was once a basin, and it was sometimes filled with water,” says Grotzinger. “Curiosity has measured about 75 meters of sedimentary fill, but based on mapping data from NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter and images from Curiosity’s cameras, it appears that the water-transported sedimentary deposition could have extended at least 150-200 meters above the crater floor, and this equates to a duration of millions of years in which lakes could have been intermittently present within the Gale Crater basin” Grotzinger says. Furthermore, the total thickness of sedimentary deposits in Gale Crater that indicate interaction with water could extend higher still–up to perhaps 800 meters above the crater floor, and possibly representing tens of millions of years.

    But layers deposited above that level do not require water as an agent of deposition or alteration. “Above 800 meters, Mount Sharp shows no evidence of hydrated strata, and that is the bulk of what forms Mount Sharp. We see another 4,000 meters of nothing but dry strata,” Grotzinger says. He suggests that perhaps this segment of the crater’s history may have been dominated by eolian, or wind-driven, deposition, as was once imagined for the lower part explored by Curiosity. This occurred after the wet period that built up the base of the mountain.

    A lingering question surrounds the original source of the water that carried sediment into the crater. For flowing water to have existed on the surface, Mars must have had a thicker atmosphere and warmer climate than has been theorized for the time frame bookending the intense geological activity in Gale Crater. Evidence for this ancient, wetter climate exists in the rock record. However, current models of this paleoclimate–factoring in estimates of the early atmosphere’s mass, composition, and the amount of energy it received from the sun–come up, quite literally, dry. Those models indicate that the atmosphere of Mars could not have sustained large quantities of liquid water.

    Yet the rock record discovered at Gale Crater suggests a different scenario. “Whether it was snowfall or rain, you have geologic evidence for that moisture accumulating in the highlands of the Gale Crater rim,” Grotzinger says. In the case of Gale Crater, at least some of the water was supplied by the highlands that form the crater rim, but groundwater discharge–a standard explanation to reconcile wet geologic observations with dry paleoclimatic predictions–is unlikely in this area. “Right on the other side of Gale’s northern rim are the Northern Plains. Some have made the argument that there was a northern ocean sitting out there, and that’s one way to get the moisture that you need to match what we are seeing in the rocks.” Pinpointing the possible location of an ocean, however, does not help to explain how that water managed to exist as a liquid for extended periods of time on the surface.

    As climatologists try to develop new atmospheric models, help should be coming from the continuing explorations by Curiosity. “There are still many kilometers of Mars history to explore,” says Fischer. He thinks that some of the most exciting data yet may come in the next few years as Curiosity climbs higher on Mount Sharp. “The strata will reveal Gale’s early history, its story. We know there are rocks that were deposited underwater, in the lake. What is the chemistry of these rocks? That lake represented an interface between the water and the atmosphere, and should tell us important things about the environment of the time.”

    “We have tended to think of Mars as being simple,” adds Grotzinger. “We once thought of the earth as being simple, too. But the more you look into it, questions come up because you’re beginning to fathom the real complexity of what we see on Mars. This is a good time to go back to reevaluate all our assumptions. Something is missing somewhere.”

    Dawn team shares new maps and insights about Ceres

    Mysteries and insights about Ceres are being discussed this week at the European Planetary Science Conference in Nantes, France. NASA’s Dawn spacecraft is providing scientists with tantalizing views and other data about the intriguing dwarf planet that they continue to analyze.

    “Ceres continues to amaze, yet puzzle us, as we examine our multitude of images, spectra and now energetic particle bursts,” said Chris Russell, Dawn principal investigator at the University of California, Los Angeles.

    A new color-coded topographic map shows more than a dozen recently approved names for features on Ceres, all eponymous for agricultural spirits, deities and festivals from cultures around the world. These include Jaja, after the Abkhazian harvest goddess, and Ernutet, after the cobra-headed Egyptian harvest goddess. A 12-mile (20-kilometer) diameter mountain near Ceres’ north pole is now called Ysolo Mons, for an Albanian festival that marks the first day of the eggplant harvest.

    Another new Ceres map, in false color, enhances compositional differences present on the surface. The variations are more subtle than on Vesta, Dawn’s previous port of call. Color-coded topographic images of Occator (oh-KAH-tor) crater, home of Ceres’ brightest spots, and a puzzling, cone-shaped 6-mile-high (4-kilometer-high) mountain, are also available. Scientists are still trying to identify processes that could produce these and other unique Cerean phenomena.

    “The irregular shapes of craters on Ceres are especially interesting, resembling craters we see on Saturn’s icy moon Rhea,” said Carol Raymond, Dawn’s deputy principal investigator based at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. “They are very different from the bowl-shaped craters on Vesta.”

    A surprising bonus observation came from Dawn’s gamma ray and neutron spectrometer. The instrument detected three bursts of energetic electrons that may result from the interaction between Ceres and radiation from the sun. The observation isn’t yet fully understood, but may be important in forming a complete picture of Ceres.

    “This is a very unexpected observation for which we are now testing hypotheses,” Russell said.

    Dawn is currently orbiting Ceres at an altitude of 915 miles (1,470 kilometers), and the spacecraft will image the entire surface of the dwarf planet up to six times in this phase of the mission. Each imaging cycle takes 11 days.

    Starting in October and continuing into December, Dawn will descend to its lowest and final orbit, an altitude of 230 miles (375 kilometers). The spacecraft will continue imaging Ceres and taking other data at higher resolutions than ever before at this last orbit. It will remain operational at least through mid-2016.

    Dawn made history as the first mission to reach a dwarf planet, and the first to orbit two distinct extraterrestrial targets, when it arrived at Ceres on March 6, 2015. It conducted extensive observations of Vesta in 2011 and 2012.

    Dawn’s mission is managed by JPL for NASA’s Science Mission Directorate in Washington. Dawn is a project of the directorate’s Discovery Program, managed by NASA’s Marshall Space Flight Center in Huntsville, Alabama. UCLA is responsible for overall Dawn mission science.     Leaked UFO video captured by Homeland Security analyzed

    A group of UFO researchers with backgrounds in science have come together to analyze an alleged UFO video they have confirmed comes from the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The object in the video was captured by a thermal imaging camera on a DHS aircraft, and according to the researchers, it exhibits characteristics that cannot be explained by any known aircraft or natural phenomenon.

    The video is overlaid with the sort of telemetry one would expect from a military or law enforcement thermal image video. It shows an object apparently moving very quickly over land and then into the ocean. It seems to be tumbling or changing shape. It moves over buildings, through trees, and eventually over the ocean. Then things get weird. The object appears to go in and out of the ocean without slowing down, and at the end of the video is either joined by another object or breaks in two.

    All of the primary witnesses have requested anonymity. However, several communications from alleged DHS employees indicate that the video caused quite a stir on the base.

    ‘Young Jupiter’ discovered in another solar system

    Astronomers have taken a photograph of a baby planet beyond the solar system that may reveal clues as to how planets such as Jupiter are formed and influence their planetary siblings, a new study shows.

    Scientists used the newly commissioned Gemini Planet Imager, which is mounted on top of a telescope in Chile, to find the planet, known as 51 Eridani b. It circles a very young sun-like star that is located about 96 light years from Earth.

    The planet, which is about double the size of Jupiter, is positioned a bit farther away from its parent star than Saturn orbits the sun. 51 Eridani b is one of the smallest planets beyond the solar system to be directly imaged.

    Still radiating heat from its formation less than 20 million years ago, or about 40 million years after dinosaurs became extinct, 51 Eridani b is glowing in infrared light, which is how the telescope saw it.

    “51 Eri b provides an opportunity to study in detail a planet that is still influenced by its formation initial conditions,” Stanford University astronomer Bruce Macintosh and colleagues wrote in this week’s issue of the journal Science.

    Follow-up analysis revealed that the planet’s atmosphere, like Jupiter’s, is dominated by methane. The discovery provides an important clue for scientists trying to figure out how these types of gas-giant planets form and evolve.

    “51 Eri b is the first young planet that probably looks like Jupiter did billions of years ago, making it currently our most important cornerpiece of the planet-formation jigsaw puzzle,” University of Arizona planetary scientist Travis Barman said in a statement.

    Astronomers have only been able to directly see a handful of planets beyond the solar system and nearly all of those have been five to 13 times as massive as Jupiter.

    Other telescopes, like NASA’s Kepler observatory, look for planets indirectly. Kepler, for example, looked for slight dips in the amount of light coming from target stars, a possible clue that an orbiting planet was crossing the face of its parent star.

    Another method is to look for wobbles in starlight that may be caused by the slight gravitational tugs of circling planets.

    Such statements would never have surfaced a decade ago. As a consequence, many of us are wondering if NASA is preparing for a disclosure like no other.Whenever ‘alien’ is mentioned, official confirmation is hard to come by. Yet former astronaut and current NASA administrator Charles Bolden has done just that. When asked by a 10-year-old if he believed in aliens, Bolden expressed his views with a certainty that  conspiracy theorists would have loved:

    •       “I do believe that we will someday find other forms of life or a form of life, if not in our solar system then in some of the other solar systems – the billions of solar systems in the universe.

    The recent discoveries of a number of Earth-like planets have given Bolden and his colleagues reason to believe the search for extraterrestrial life forms will soon register its first success.

    •        “Today we know that there are literally thousands, if not millions of other planets, many of which may be very similar to our own earth. So some of us, many of us believe that we’re going to find… evidence that there is life elsewhere in the universe.”

    Bolden was also asked about the existence of Area 51, which he immediately admitted. After all, the Central Intelligence Agency have officially recognized the base and its exact location in 2013. However, Bolden was adamant when he said there are no aliens there:

    •          “There is an Area 51. It’s not what many people think. I’ve been to a place called that but it’s a normal research and development place. I never saw any aliens or alien spacecraft or anything when I was there.I think because of the secrecy of the aeronautics research that goes on there it’s ripe for people to talk about aliens being there.”

    The base was a badly kept secret for decades and it certainly looks like it’s going to generate controversies for years to come. People are going to keep talking. But on the upside, NASA is making some historical admissions.

    Accelerating search for intelligent life in the universe

    The National Science Foundation’s Green Bank Telescope (GBT) will join in the most powerful, comprehensive, and intensive scientific search ever for signs of intelligent life in the Universe. The international endeavor, known as the Breakthrough Listen, will scan the nearest million stars in our own Galaxy and stars in 100 other galaxies for the telltale radio signature of an advanced civilization.

    In a contract signed with the Breakthrough Prize Foundation, significant funding — approximately $2 million per year for 10 years — will go to the GBT to participate in this exhilarating journey of discovery.

    “Beginning early next year, approximately 20 percent of the annual observing time on the GBT will be dedicated to searching a staggering number of stars and galaxies for signs of intelligent life via radio signals,” said Tony Beasley, director of the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, which operates the GBT and other world-class radio astronomy facilities. “We are delighted to play such a vital role in hopefully answering one of the most compelling questions in all of science and philosophy: are we alone in the Universe?”

    In addition to the GBT, the Parkes Telescope in Australia will also be involved in this endeavor.

    Breakthrough Listen will be the biggest scientific search ever undertaken for signs of intelligent life beyond Earth. It will be 50 times more sensitive and cover 10 times more of the sky than previous searches. In tandem with this radio search, the Automated Planet Finder Telescope at Lick Observatory in California will undertake the world’s deepest and broadest search for optical laser transmissions, a tantalizing complementary approach to searching the cosmos for extraterrestrial intelligence.

    The $100 million Breakthrough Listen initiative was announced today at the Royal Society in London.

    The program will include a survey of the one million closest stars to Earth. It will scan the center of our Galaxy and the entire galactic plane. Beyond the Milky Way, it will search for messages from the 100 closest galaxies. If a civilization based around one of the 1,000 nearest stars transmits to us with the power of common aircraft radar, the GBT and the Parkes Telescope could detect it.

    The program will generate vast amounts of data; all of which will be open to the public. This will likely constitute the largest amount of scientific data ever made publicly available. The Breakthrough Listen team will use and develop the most powerful software for sifting and searching this flood of data. All software will be open source. Both the software and the hardware used in the Breakthrough Listen project will be compatible with other telescopes around the world, so that they could join the search for intelligent life. As well as using the Breakthrough Listen software, scientists and members of the public will be able to add to it, developing their own applications to analyze the data.

    Breakthrough Listen will also be joining and supporting SETI@home, the University of California, Berkeley ground-breaking distributed computing platform, with 9 million volunteers around the world donating their spare computing power to search astronomical data for signs of life. Collectively, they constitute one of the largest supercomputers in the world.

    The 100-meter Green Bank Telescope is the world’s largest fully steerable radio telescope. Its location in the National Radio Quiet Zone and the West Virginia Radio Astronomy Zone protects the incredibly sensitive telescope from unwanted radio interference, enabling it to perform unique observations.

    The National Radio Astronomy Observatory is a facility of the National Science Foundation, operated under cooperative agreement by Associated Universities, Inc.
