"'Enormous petrified mulberries': a new dimension on carved stone balls"

Carved stone balls are one of Scotland’s most enigmatic prehistoric artefacts. Created some 5000 years ago in the Late Neolithic, their distinctive knobbed forms were carefully pecked and ground to shape by communities across the north east of Scotland. A small number, such as the Towie Ball, were elaborately incised with circles and spirals and represent some of the finest examples of Neolithic ‘passage grave’ art in Europe.

Yet we still don’t know how carved stone balls were used; in the words of archaeologists Stuart Piggott and Glyn Daniel (1951) ‘their use is wholly unknown’. It has long been postulated that they were weapons – mounted as maceheads or bound with sinew or twine and thrown like South American bolas. But other authors have suggested they were used as weights, measures, mnemonic devices or symbols of power; some mathematicians have even viewed them as representations of platonic solids. It’s easy to see why these artefacts have captured the imagination for more than two centuries.

Around 525 carved stone balls are known, the vast majority being from Scotland, with rare finds from England, Ireland and one example from Norway. National Museums Scotland holds the largest collection of carved stone balls in the world, with some 140 originals and casts of a further 60 examples from other collections. Some of our finest carved stone balls are on display in the Early People gallery, but as these artefacts are so popular we have decided to bring 60 of our carved stone balls to you as 3d models via our Sketchfab account. These examples represent a broad cross-section of the different known forms and raw materials in our collections; from three to six knobbed stones in granite, to sandstone examples covered in numerous rounded projections. The latter infamously described by Sir John Evans in his book Ancient Stone Implements (1897) as resembling ‘enormous petrified mulberries’.

These models were made using photogrammetry, which uses around 150-200 images of each artefact to produce an exceptionally high-resolution 3D model. The resolution allows you to examine and appreciate these artefacts in unprecedented detail. Indeed, the model of one carved stone ball (X.AS 91) revealed traces of fine concentric circles on one projecting knob that had never been recorded before, despite the artefact having been in the museum for more than 100 years and examined by dozens of scholars. Traces of decoration and working are particularly clear in ‘matcap’ mode, which makes the artefact look like shiny metal, emphasising any irregularities in the surface.

Muldashev: four civilizations on Earth before man

A well-known Russian expert, Ernst Rifgatovich Muldashev, ophthalmic surgeon by profession and researcher by passion, has long been looking for traces of ancient civilizations disappeared before the mankind appeared on Earth.

Muldshev, who in 2002 published three volumes of “In Search of Cities of the Gods”, followed by numerous other volumes (among which “Where do we come from” e “Between the arms of Dracula”), is convinced that the existence of more ancient civilizations of man is confirmed by archaeological finds, rock carvings, references to airplanes and Ufos in stories and legends. According to the expert, the civilizations that inhabited the planet would have been four.

ASURAS, THE NATIVES

The Asuras, or the natives, according to Muldashev were the first race appeared on Earth 10 million years ago. They were incredibly tall beings, up to 50 meters, they had an etheric body, they lived for up to ten thousand years and used telepathy to communicate with each other. In reality they were not natives of the Earth: they moved there after the death of the Phaethon planet.

ATLANTEANS, THOSE BORN AFTER

As the millennia passed, the Asuras changed, their bodies became denser. Thus a new race would develop, the Atlanteans, i.e. “those born after”. They were slightly smaller than the Asuras, they still did not have bones, but they had a third eye, located between the eyebrows.

LEMURIANS, THE BUILDERS OF THE SPHINX

After the Atlanteans, appeared on Earth the Lemurians. Much more similar to modern humans, they possessed a bone skeleton and were differentiated according to sex. The third eye was still present, but not as well developed as the Atlanteans.

Lemurians were about 7-8 meters tall and lived about a thousand years. According to Muldashev, they were the ones who built the Sphinx, Stonehenge and many other wonderful monuments of antiquity.

BOREI, THE MOST SIMILAR TO MAN

Lastly the Borei would have appeared: this race was formed long after the other, its members were much lower, did not exceed 3-4 meters in height, their third eye was more hidden while the other organs were very similar to those of man.

What happened to all these beings? According to Muldashev, about 25-30 thousand years ago on our planet occurred a nuclear catastrophe following a conflict between Lemurians and Borei. Some of the Lemurians took refuge in the caves, where they fell into a hibernating state, the other side flew away on space ships.

ARYANS, AFTER THE FALL OF ATLANTIS

After the Lemurians left the scene, the Boers and the Atlanteans reached unprecedented development peaks, but they could not avoid the disappearance of their civilizations that would have happened about 12 thousand years ago.

According to Muldashev a fifth race would have developed just before the disappearance of Atlantis, whose myth survived so far: the "aryan" race. The ancestors of modern man did not have a third eye and that's why our society would be developing more slowly.

Will it be true, or as official science says it's just about fantastic theories without any concrete proof? The experts have spoken, but this does not interest the readers of Muldashev.

Has Someone Really Discovered A 500,000-Year-Old Artifact In California?

On February 13, 1961, Wallace Lane, Virginia Maxey and Mike Mikesell were searching for interesting specimens of minerals, specifically geodes, for their gift shop in Olancha, California.

Their geodes search took them approximately 6 kilometers northeast of Olancha, about 4300 feet to the Coso Mountains near the dry bed of Owens Lake, where they were collecting samples.

They returned to the shop with several geodes.

But one of them had 500,000 reasons to be dubbed as the discovery of a lifetime.

The next day Mike Mikesell broke a blade while cutting what he thought was a geode, inside the object that he was cutting, Mikesell found anything but the typical cavity geodes usually has, to his surprise, he discovered a perfectly circular section of a hard white material that looked like porcelain. In the center of the porcelain cylinder axis was a 2 mm shiny metal. The metal shaft seemed like a magnet but there were other strange qualities in the object. The surface was very rough and it appeared as if it was coated with fossilized shells.

In addition to these strange deposits, he also found two nonmagnetic metallic objects embedded in the crust, which seemed like a metallic nail and a packing ring. As Mike Mikesell was analyzing the object, it seemed to get even stranger. The inner layer was hexagonal and seemed to form a shell around the cylinder of hard porcelain. On the inside, a layer of very deteriorated copper surrounded the porcelain cylinder.

Very little is known about the first inspections of this mysterious artifact. According to Virginia Maxey, they consulted a geologist who asked to remain unknown, according to this mysterious geologist who examined the fossil shells embedded in the sample, the piece would have taken at least 500,000 years to reach its current form. So what is a spark plug doing inside an artifact dating at least half a million years?

The object was submitted to further testing that confirmed the anomalies of the object as the artifact was submitted to both X-rays and visible light testing. X-rays revealed that in the upper half of the device there was some sort of coil. In the other half of the artifact revealed what seemed a metal sleeve, presumably the copper covering the porcelain cylinder.

In 1963, the strange object that was dubbed “The Coso Artifact” and was exhibited at the Museum of East California in the town of Independence for a period of three months. Then, for years it was exhibited in the home of Wallace Lane, one of the original three discoverers of the 500 thousand-year-old artifact. In 1969 Wallace Lane received an offer of $25,000 for the mysterious object but he refused to sell it.

The Coso Artifact remains a mystery. It is an object that appears to be lost as many other artifacts discovered in the past that have provided us with not only subjects to talk about, but with new challenges for history books. Who built the artifact, and what its purpose was will probably remain a mystery less the object is found, once again, so that other researchers might analyze it thoroughly.

Do These Ancient Paintings Feature The Ultimate Ancient Astronaut Evidence?

History has proven to be a great teacher for the human race, we have seen that our ancestors were extremely intelligent, with amazing knowledge on subjects such as astronomy, geometry, mathematics and other important sciences but they were amazing artists as well. From the construction of the great Pyramids of Giza to paintings in the Renaissance Era and further on, incredible stories have been told that have been difficult to explain.

In this article, we focus on some of the most interesting paintings of that period in History as we look at “The Baptism of Christ” by Aert De Gelder, “The Madonna with Saint Giovannino“, “The Annunciation” and other very interesting pieces of art that tell incredible stories.

The interpretation given to each painting can vary from person to person but all of these paintings have something in common, they seem to tell the same story, incredible “flying machines” appear to be incorporated in the “scenery”. But who could have possessed the ability to fly at that time in history?

Were these flying machines misinterpreted? Are they “clouds” or “angels” or is there something more to them? Are these different authors sending a message in their art? If there is one thing that these paintings are not, that is ordinary.

One of the paintings that we find very interesting is the “The Baptism of Christ” by Aert De Gelder.

Looking at this painting the first thing that you notice are these strange rays of light that are coming down from a disk-shaped object in the sky. It is one of the most interesting paintings and according to the Ancient Alien theory, this painting is a piece of strong evidence which illustrates a Disk Shaped flying object.

The author of the image painted a circular object, it cannot be confused as a cloud, it appears to have some sort of light at the center and the rays of light are coming out of this object, you cannot confuse it for thunder or anything else really. We believe that the author painted what he saw at a certain point in his life. If he wanted to paint a cloud or the sun he would have painted them in a much more effective way. We believe that this painting illustrates a disk-shaped UFO, much like the disk-shaped objects that are reported even today.

“The Miracle of the Snow” by Masolino Da Panicale is another incredible image that we cannot pass by without taking a closer look.  This painting was previously known as Dedicatio Sanctæ Mariæ ad Nives (Dedication of the Church of Our Lady of the Snows). This painting is very interesting because it illustrates a large number of disk-shaped objects flying in the sky.

The first thing that you can think of to explain these objects are clouds but are they really clouds? Did this author paint all of the clouds at that time giving them a “disk” or saucer shape? One of the objects in this painting that drew particular interest is the object to the right just above the building. When you look at it, it shows incredible similarity to some of the modern-day depictions of Unidentified flying objects.

This object in our opinion does not look in any way like a cloud.

We have observed several paintings from the Renaissance Era and compared artists techniques when it comes to illustrating clouds and the work done by Masolino Da Panicale is just impressive and we ask why would this artist pick this “Disk” shape? Can we say that in this painting we have several UFO’s or are these just… clouds?…

Disk-shaped clouds?

At the Visoki Dečani monastery located in Kosovo, we find another very interesting piece of art. The Crucifixion of Christ.

This painting is a very detailed piece of art, we see several different objects that are illustrated around Christ, but after looking at the painting, there are two objects which seem to stand out from the rest of the items on the painting. Located to the left and the right of the painting they seem to depict two humans that are inside some sort of spaceship. According to modern day explanations, these “objects” are placed in the painting to depict the sun and the moon as in other paintings. But why place “pilots” or a human inside them?

Was the artist really trying to illustrate our Sun and the Moon?

Or was the artist trying to depict something otherworldly?

By observing the left object in the painting, we see that the “pilot” inside this particular object appears to be manipulating something in front of him, his arms are painted stretched out and reaching for something in front of him. The object to the right shows the figure turning his head to see whats behind him.

Are these two objects depictions of UFO’s and their crew?

Or are they simply the artist’s way to illustrate the sun and the moon?

Another painting that we find extremely interesting is “The Annunciation” painted by Carlo Crivelli.

This artist favored verdant landscape backgrounds, and his works can be identified by his characteristic use of fruits and flowers as decorative motifs. His works were clear and definite in contour, with astounding attention to detail. In his painting “The Annunciation” there are several objects that stand out from the rest of this extremely detailed piece of art.

First of all, we have a circularly shaped cloud. Inside the cloud, we can see several “angels” looking outside of the cloud, but what makes this interesting is the ray of light that shines on a “pigeon” and on Mary’s head.

Now what we find puzzling is that in this painting  Carlo Crivelli painted several other clouds, in fact, the sky is filled with clouds, but he decides to paint this specific “disk-shaped” cloud with “angels” and a beam of light?

Why paint one specific cloud so different in comparison to the other clouds present in the painting and with a beam of light?

From what we have seen in similar paintings, the artists usually paint beams of light descending directly from angels or from the sun, but this is not the case in Carlo Crivelli’s painting in which he paid extreme attention to the details and made sure the public could tell the difference when analyzing this masterpiece.

We can also see a person that Carlo Crivelli decided to incorporate in the middle of the painting which is looking at the sky– at this disk-shaped cloud just below the gate.

The Madonna with Saint Giovannino painted in the 15th century. Another painting that can be added to the list of ancient paintings that depict an unidentified flying object.

Above Mary’s left shoulder we observe a disk-shaped object that appears to be glowing – a UFO?. It is an object which the artist depicted in great detail making sure it would stand out in the painting. To the right of the painting, we see a man that is holding his right arm above his eyes with which the artist made sure to send a message that this object was very bright. To the left of the image in the upper corner, we can see an object that looks like the sun.

This means that the artist painted this disk-shaped object, giving it a shiny detail and he made sure to illustrate it to the right of the sun so we know this bright object cannot be confused for the sun, this disk shaped object does not look like your ordinary cloud, so if it is not the sun nor a cloud what could it possibly be?

Is The Madonna with Saint Giovannino painting an illustration of an otherworldly visitation? The artist considered this object extremely important, otherwise, he would not have placed it nor painted it with such detail as we see here.

Puma Punku, A Never-Ending Ancient Mystery

Puma Punku is truly a wonderful Place, not only is it an incredible temple complex filled with mysteries that baffle one’s mind, it is a place where one loses the notion of space and time.

This temple complex located near Tiwanaku, Bolivia is one of the most incredible ancient ruins you will find in South America.

At Puma Punku or “The Door of the Puma” as the Aymara people call it, we find incredible evidence of precision cuts, precise engineering, and evidence of high level of geometry and mathematics. It is a treasure for anyone who has knowledge of Mathematics, geology, engineering, and astronomy.

Surveys done using ground-penetrating radar, magnetometry, induced electrical conductivity, and magnetic susceptibility reveal the presence of numerous man-made structures such as wall foundations of buildings and compounds, water conduits, pool-like features, revetments, terraces, residential compounds, and widespread gravel pavements all of which now lie buried and hidden beneath the modern ground’s surface and all that within a kilometer between Pumapunku and Kalasasaya — another incredible archaeological structure.

Perhaps the biggest mystery involving Puma Punku is, how did ancient mankind manage to transport these huge blocks of stone from quarries within 10 to 100 km. How did they manage to achieve this type of precision cuts and how did they place the blocks in such a perfect manner. Engineers and constructors around the world today cannot answer nor replicate these achievements done by ancient mankind thousands of years ago.

Archaeologists cannot come to a conclusion and answer how were these amazing blocks of stone transported. Some of them believe that it was accomplished by the large labor force of ancient Tiwanaku. Several theories have been proposed as to how this labor force transported the stones from the quarries to Puma Punku but these theories remain speculative.

It is believed that the builders of Puma Punku used llama skin ropes and ramps and inclined planes to move these incredible blocks to the site. But this explanation is not accepted widely, at least in our opinion it takes more than llama skin rope and ramps to move stones of blocks that weigh over 100 metric tons through distances of 10 – 100 kilometers.

Among the largest stone blocks found at Puma Punku we can find one with the following characteristics: 7.81 meters long, 5.17 meters wide, averages 1.07 meters thick and is estimated to weigh about 131 metric tons. Incredible right? And this was done with ropes and ramps? OK, right. The second largest stone block found within the Puma Punku is 7.90 meters long, 2.50 meters wide, and averages 1.86 meters thick. Its weight has been estimated to be 85.21 metric tons.

Researches believe that these two blocks of stone were quarried near Lake Titicaca approx. 10 km from Puma Punku.

Other stone blocks found at Puma Punku have been quarried near the Copacabana Peninsula about 90 km away from and across Lake Titicaca. So perhaps this is one of the biggest mysteries at Puma Punku.

How did Ancient man do this?

Another puzzling mystery at Puma Punku is the assembly of the walls.

Each stone was finely cut to interlock with the surrounding stones and the blocks fit together like a puzzle, forming load-bearing joints without the use of mortar. The precision challenges today’s engineering abilities.

A common engineering technique is to cut the top of the lower stone at a certain angle and placing another stone on top of it which was cut at the same angle. What baffles scientists, engineers and archaeologists is the precision with which this was achieved.

The precision with which these angles have been utilized to create flush joints is indicative of a highly sophisticated knowledge of stone-cutting and a thorough understanding of descriptive geometry. Some of the joins we find at Puma Punku are so well placed, and so precisely locked into place that you wouldn’t be able to fit a paper in between them.

The level of masonry we find at Puma Punku is just amazing. These stones look like as if they were cut with a “laser”. They are so precise and so smooth that you cannot come up with a logical explanation on how ancient man could have achieved this without the use of modern-day equipment.

It is a mystery.

Ancient Engineers at Puma Punku and Tiwanaku should be considered masterminds. Their knowledge of mathematics, geometry, and geology is something that most of today’s engineers lack.

These Ancient Engineers were truly great, they developed complex civic infrastructure, they invented waterproof sewage lines, hydraulic mechanisms, and functional irrigation systems.

These Are The Incredible Lost Megaliths Of Oceania

The distinct culture of Polynesians has created some of the most interesting monuments in the world. A true wonder of the world is the Moai sculptures on Easter Island but not less intriguing are the mysterious Tikis statues of Hiva Oa.

The temple of Taputapuatea Marae is an ancient pyramid built on the Leeward Islands, French Polynesia. It is considered one of the most important sacred complexes in Polynesia. Established around 1000 AD, the marae was a place of learning where priests and navigators from all over the Pacific would gather to offer sacrifices to the gods and share their knowledge of the genealogical origins of the universe, and of deep-ocean navigation.

During the 15th century CE, the Maori of New Zealand constructed a hill fort known as Maungakiekie (One Tree Hill) in Auckland. It is the largest Maori fort ever built. These Earth workers literally carved a fortified complex out of the hill, considered to be the most impressive systems in the world. Many of the Maori can also trace their ancestry back to this hill, which is said to have the spirits of their elders.

The island of Hiva Oa is home to a ceremonial site with houses some of the largest prehistoric statues in French Polynesia, up to 2.6 m high. They are positioned on an ancient monument known as the me’ae, a sacred site arranged for ceremonies and gatherings. The old stone figures were based on gods and legendary figures from the islander’s history.

One of the most interesting fortifications of Polynesia can be found on the small island of Rapa Iti. These pyramid-shaped towers were built along the highest peaks of the island, a realm where the island gods were said to live. It is believed that the depletion of natural resources on the island resulted in warfare, and the inhabitants lived alongside these fortified settlements for protection.

One of the most significant petroglyph sites in the world can be found in Rapa Nui (with more than 1,20 valuable carvings). The ‘Orongo’ glyphs were based on the birdman cult, which hosted an annual race to bring the first bird egg from the islet of Motu Nui to ‘Orongo’. The site has many petroglyphs, mainly of the birdmen, carved out of large volcanic blocks.

Stonehenge of the Pacific - Haʻamonga Trilithon of Tonga

One of the most unusual megalithic monuments in the Pacific is the Ha’amonga ‘a Maui in Tonga. Each stone weighs some 20 tons and is some 6 m high. This massive trilithon was composed of three giant stones – two upright and a lintel uniting them. It was built-in the beginning of 13th century, possibly as a royal gateway. Nearby is large upright stone slab – Maka Fa’akinanga – a legendary throne of the king. The local legends of Tonga suggest that this monument was made by a god because no mortals would be able to handle such giant slabs of stone.

Hale O Pi’ilani Heiau is an ancient temple complex built on the Hawaiian Island of Maui. This huge shrine was used to treat the sick, make offerings to the gods, start rain, stop rain, increase the population, ensure the health of the nation, achieve success in distant voyaging, reach peace, and achieve success in war.

These Are Some Of The Most Prominent Pyramids On Earth

A pyramid is a structure whose outer surfaces are triangular and converge to a single point at the top, making the shape roughly a pyramid in the geometric sense. For thousands of years, civilizations across the globe have used this architectural design for tombs, fortresses, and temples.

Compelling studies suggest that many of these pyramids were aligned with astronomical events, such as solstices, eclipses, and even the Earths own hemispheres.

The Mesopotamians built the earliest pyramid structures known as ziggurats (e.g. Tepe Sialk and the Ziggurat of Ur). In ancient times they were painted in gold & bronze, endowing them with a luminous quality. The ziggurats were believed to be dwelling places for the gods, and each city had its own patron deity which ruled over the sea, sky, earth etc.

In Egypt, the pyramids were huge structures built of brick or stone. The sun god Ra, considered the father of all pharaohs, was said to have created himself from a pyramid-shaped mound known as a ‘Benben’ before creating all other gods. They were often coated with white limestone in order to give them a shining appearance (as a reference to the rays of the sun god).

The Nubian pyramids from Sudan served as tombs for the kings and queens of Jebel Barkal and Meroë. These Nubian Pyramids have different characteristics to their Egyptian counterparts, constructed at much steeper angles. These great tombs were still being built in Sudan as late as 300 CE.

Far to the East, there were many flat-topped like pyramids built in China & Korea between 188 BCE and 675 CE. These huge mausoleums were built for the early emperors of China and their relatives. The ancient Chinese believed that when an emperor died, their soul entered the afterlife, so the mausoleums were constructed as heavenly palaces for their life hereafter.

All of the daily comforts of their past life such as servants, attendants, possessions, pets, wives, guardians, concubines, food and drink were to be provided for them in the after life. This was accomplished by burying all of these things with the deceased when they died. It was not uncommon to kill people in order to be buried with their master, but as dynasties evolved clay replicas replaced the real thing.

The Indonesia culture also featured pyramid structures such as Borobudur temple and Prang temple. These step pyramids were based on the native beliefs that mountains and high places are the abode for the spirit of the ancestors.

Across the Pacific Ocean, a number of Mesoamerican cultures also built pyramid-shaped structures. They were typically stepped, with temples on top (similar to the ziggurats of Mesopotamia). These temples were often used as places of human sacrifice. The ‘Pyramid of the Sun’ in Teotihuacán means “the place where men become Gods.” They claim that their pyramids were instruments for transforming the soul after death, just as the Egyptians did.

A recent series of pyramid-like structures were built by the Polynesians known as Pā (sacred hill forts). These stepped structures were carved from hill tops, forming a pyramid-like shape, and were often used as defensive settlements. The Polynesians believed these earth works were endowed with ‘mana’, a spiritual energy that granted them power and authority.

The common theme which links all these pyramid structures is death, authority, and immortality. These temples literally seemed to deify their occupants, who went on to rule from the heavens, their legacy secured and memorialized by the wondrous monuments of the ancients.

The Beginning of Religion: This is The Evolutionary Tree Of All Religions On Earth

Since the dawn of mankind, humans have tried to make sense of their world, especially when faced with unknown phenomena such as ‘what causes storms’, ‘what happens to us after we die’, and ‘how was the world formed’? It is plausible that from such questions, our first primitive religions were formed.

The earliest evidence of a religious practice can be traced back to 100,000 years ago when we began to bury our dead. Although we cannot define this as the origin of faith, it does suggest that at the dawn of humanity, we had begun to consider some kind of afterlife.

Over time, this religious practice gave rise to a new ideology which spread across the continents, known today as ‘Animism’. This emerging faith was the root belief system that would evolve and branch out into numerous other ideologies all over the world. The journey of these evolving religions can be broken down into three classic periods.

It should be noted that these periods are not indicative of a new ideology improving upon previous faith systems. Religions change over time, they go extinct, and they split into distinct traditions.

They adapt to their environment, they construct their environment in part, all just like organic evolution does.

Period 1: Animism (100,000 BCE – Present)

Humans began to believe that natural constructs (e.g. plants, animals, rocks and wind) possessed a spiritual essence. These spirit entities were believed to have powers and temperaments that influenced our everyday world. By worshiping these divine beings, it was believed we could maintain harmony with this spirit world and gain favors from them.

Period 2: Polytheism (15,000 BCE – Present)

The roots of Polytheism may lie in the Epipaleolithic era. Linguists and historians have defined a hypothetical language family called Nostratic, which seems to have influenced all the African and Eurasian dialects. Many of the words that can be reconstructed involve nature gods (such as mother earth and father sky). This suggests that the nature spirits of animism had evolved into a new generation of Gods (giving abstract beings of thunder and water a more human form). During the Neolithic revolution, civilizations began to emerge requiring new areas of expertise (e.g. lawmaking, metallurgy, agriculture, and commerce). It was the descendants of the Nostratic Gods (e.g. the Indo-Europeans and Sumerians) who took on the role of guide and leader to the civilized world.

Typically these divine beings were divided into several classes, overseeing the heavens, the mortal realm, and the underworld. Each deity possessed their own powers, religious practice, and domain (e.g. trading, diplomacy, Warcraft etc). Man could either worship one or all of these beings, gaining favor from them via offerings, prayer and even sacrifice.

Period 3: Monotheism (1348 BCE – Present)

In the Bronze Age, a new movement took shape that prioritized one God over all other deities. This system is known as Monotheism – a belief in one Supreme Being. In 1348 BCE, the pharaoh Akhenaten, raised a lesser known God called ‘Aten’ to supreme status, downplaying the role of all other Egyptian deities. A little later in Iran, Zoroaster (a Persian priest) claimed ‘Ahura Mazda’ to be the one supreme deity. This newly emerging system posited that one creator god had formed the known universe, and was totally self-sufficient, capable of ruling over all other domains. This idea became prominent in Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and Sikhism.

Most monotheistic systems tend to be exclusive in nature, which meant the gods of the Old World had to be purged from man’s consciousness. As a consequence, monotheistic religions displayed less religious tolerance than polytheistic religions, resulting in many wars and political disputes.

Fire of the Gods, Mythological Weapons Of The Ancient Past

Mythological weapons

One of the most well-known stories in Greek Mythology is the legend of Prometheus. This powerful Titan ruled over the realm of fire, and in a defiant act passed his sacred knowledge onto humanity (despite Zeus’s orders to keep this knowledge forbidden). This combustible tool allowed our ancestors to survive the cold, bake clay vessels, and clear forests for planting. It literally helped humanity ascend from the stone age to a world of culture and technology.

But according to Hindu Mythology, this blazing gift went way beyond the primitive use of smelting metal and cooking meat. In the hands of the gods, fire was a profound and deadly tool, capable of incinerating enemies and leveling entire civilizations.

Agneyastra was one such weapon, created by the fire god Agni. It was described as a flaming arrow which required great knowledge and skill to work. Legend says the Agneyastra was used by the hero Sagara to set his enemies ablaze.

Another weapon, created by the God Vishnu, was the Narayanastra which fired a tirade of missiles upon its enemies. It was said the intensity of the fire increased the more an enemy resisted, and lessened when they showed their submission. In order to maintain a balance, this weapon could only be used once. If anyone tried to use it twice, it would devour the user and their supporting army.

The Brahmastra (forged by Lord Brahma) was one of the deadliest weapons in mythology. It required days of intense meditation to activate, and when fired, almost nothing could stop it. Upon impact, it created a powerful inferno capable of annihilating an entire nation. The weapon also created severe environmental damage (not dissimilar to radioactive fallout). Wherever the Brahmastra was dropped, the surrounding land would become barren of all life.

Finally, there was the deadliest weapon of all, the Pashupatastra. Both Shiva and Kali were said to have possessed this device, which was discharged by the power of thought. It was forbidden to be used against lesser enemies. This catastrophic weapon was said to be capable of destroying creation and vanquishing all life. The Hindu hero, Arjuna, obtained this weapon from Lord Shiva but did not use it as he was afraid he would destroy the world.

All of these powerful weapons sound uncannily familiar to the tools of mass destruction we have today. Perhaps the gods had a message for us. It is of no coincidence that Oppenheimer, creator of the atomic bomb used this quote from Hindu mythology “Now I am become death, the destroyer of worlds”. We live in an age where the fire of the Gods is now at our own disposal. Is it possible that there was a reason that Zeus forbade Prometheus from sharing this sacred knowledge? Can we truly be entrusted with the fire of the Gods?

The Nebra Sky Disc: One Of The Oldest Cosmic Maps Ever Discovered

The Nebra sky disk, first thought to be a forgery, is now considered as one of the most important archaeological findings in the 20th century. This object is a bronze disk of around 30 cm diameter and a weight of 2.2 kg, with a blue-green patina and inlaid with gold symbols. The images on the disc are interpreted generally as a sun or full moon, a lunar crescent, and stars, specifically the  Pleiades.

But what makes this disk very unique is the fact that this disk is unlike any known artistic style from the period. The Nebra Sky Disc features the oldest concrete depiction of the cosmos worldwide. in June 2013 the Nebra sky disk was included in the UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register.

The disk is attributed to a site near Nebra, Saxony-Anhalt in Germany, and associatively dated to c. 1600 BC. According to researchers, it is at least two hundred years older than the oldest images found in Egypt. The Nebra sky disk was discovered by two “convicted” treasure hunters using a metal detector at a prehistoric enclosure encircling the Mittelberg hill, near the town of Nebra The disk was recovered shortly after by police authorities.

It was a group of German researchers that uncovered evidence that this disk was a complex astronomical clock for the harmonization of solar and lunar calendars, it is considered as the first ever portable navigating system.

But that does not answer any questions regarding the disk that have surfaced since its discovery in 1999. One of the most important markings found on the disk is the representation of the Pleiades;  an open star cluster containing middle-aged hot B-type stars located in the constellation of Taurus.

It is among the nearest star clusters to Earth and is the cluster most obvious to the naked eye in the night sky. The celestial entity has several meanings in different cultures and traditions and it is one of the most famous celestial objects (together with the Orion Nebula) in ancient times.

The Bronze Age astronomers would hold the Nebra clock against the sky and observe the position of the celestial objects.

The intercalary month was inserted when what they saw in the sky corresponded to the map on the disc they were holding in their hands. This happened every two to three years. “This is a clear expansion of what we knew about the meaning and function of the sky disc,” said archaeologist Harald Meller.

“The sensation lies in the fact that the Bronze Age people managed to harmonize the solar and lunar years. We never thought they would have managed that,…The functioning of this clock was probably known to a very small group of people,”

According to astronomer Wolfhard Schlosser of the Rurh University at Bochum, the Bronze Age sky gazers already knew what the Babylonians would describe only a thousand years later.

“Whether this was a local discovery, or whether the knowledge came from afar, is still not clear,” Schlosser said.

Ever since the disc was discovered, archaeologists and astronomers have been puzzled by the shape of the moon as it appears on the disc. According to the ancient Babylonian rule, a thirteenth month should only be added to the lunar calendar only when one sees the constellation of the moon and the Pleiades exactly as they appear on the Nebra sky disc. — Article: 2002. (www.dw-world.de)

14 Massive Monoliths Of The Ancient World

Monoliths (aka menhirs or obelisks) are upright stones that have been used to create impressive structures around the world. These great monuments can appear on their own, or as part of a group (e.g. stone circles, temples, tombs etc).

The erection of these monoliths mainly took place in the Neolithic, later continuing into the Bronze Age. They were typically hewn from the land and raised on sacred sites that our ancestors deemed worthy of honoring. Their size varied considerably, but their shape is generally uneven and squared, often tapering towards the top.

A number of ancient Egyptian obelisks are known to have survived, plus the “Unfinished Obelisk” found partly hewn from its quarry at Aswan. Had it have been erected, it would have been the tallest megalith in the world! These obelisks are now dispersed around the world, and fewer than half of them remain in Egypt.

It was said that many of the ancient obelisks were used to mark the passing of royal personages (e.g. the Karnack Obelisk is associated with King Thutmose I, and the Stella of Axum with the Queen of Sheba). Even the Great Menhir of Er-Grah is built next to an ancient tomb suggesting it is a grave marker worthy of a significant hero or king from the Neolithic era.

It is also said the pyramids and obelisks might have been inspired by previously overlooked astronomical phenomena connected with sunrise and sunset: the zodiacal light and sun pillars respectively.

Have The Ancient Ruins Of Atlantis Been Found In Antarctica?

I mean who doesn’t want to find Atlantis, right?

According to satellite images on Google Earth, there is a strange area in Antarctica which supposedly reveals a structure that, according to some theorists, could belong to lost ancient civilization, and not just any lost civilization, but Plato’s Atlantis.

As expected, the video detailing the possible ‘discovery’ was posted by the Conspiracy Depot channel, and it shows a series of lines that according to the video’s narrator, appear to have an artificial origin and have been exposed due to the melting of the ice in the region.

“The three parts of this structure are separated by equal distances and all are approximately seven meters long,” says Graham Maple, owner of the YouTube channel.

“It looks ancient, almost as if it had been carved into the rock itself. I think this was what was left of a building or structure. I think there were great civilizations in the ancient Antarctic continent and maybe Antarctica was even home to the mythical Atlantis, “he said.

2There is much-forgotten knowledge of our ancient history. We are beginning to scratch the surface with this new discovery,” concluded Maple.

According to Mapple, Atlantis, or the ruins of another ancient empire, are buried somewhere beneath the Antarctic ice.

The Story of Atlantis

In Timaeus and Critias, written around 360 BC Plato described—through the voice of Critias—how Solon, a highly respected and well known Greek Statement traveled to Sais and met with priests from the goddess Neith.

It is there where an extremely old priest tells Solon about an empire that existed 9,000 years before him, which was at war with Athens.

Eventually, this empire identified as ‘Atlantis’ was destroyed by a great catastrophe.

Sonchis explained that Atlantis’ capital city was elaborately constructed, where great temples and palaces were erected, adorned by exotic gardens made of silver, gold and, ivory. Sonchis further described the capital of the Atlantean empire as being made of massive walls, which in turn were surrounded by circular islands protecting the inner citadel of the metropolis.

And according to Plato, Atlantis was located “beyond the Pillars of Hercules“. While Antarctica is beyond the pillars, it isn’t anywhere near where Plato said the mighty Atlantean empire disappeared.

However, as noted by experts, Antarctica wasn’t always the frozen continent and was certainly not always located where it today (geographically).

While this may not be Atlantis, it certainly is interesting to see what future explorations of the frozen continent will yield, and whether or not it’s possible that in the distant past, perhaps even before written history, great civilizations ruled the earth.

Easter Island mystery solved: How huge stone 'hats' were placed on famous ancient statues

Researchers say they figured out how the ancient people of Easter Island put 12-ton hats on the mysterious statues.

Experts have worked out how the ancient people of Easter Island, or Rapa Nui, were able to place massive stone hats on the island’s famous statues.

A team of researchers that includes experts from Binghamton University, State University at New York, worked out that the island’s inhabitants used a technique called “parbuckling” that uses ropes and a ramp.

"Of the many questions that surround the island's past, two tend to stand out: How did people of the past move such massive statues (moai) and how did they place such massive stone hats (pukao) on top of their heads?" said Carl Lipo, a professor of anthropology at Binghamton University, in a statement.

With limited resources at their disposal, archaeologists have wondered how the islanders were able to move the cylindrical pukao, which weigh 13.2 tons (12 metric tons), across long distances.

After taking photos of the pukao, 3-D modeling was used to reveal key details of the giant stone hats, which are carved from red scoria, or volcanic rock.

Experts found that pukao were most likely rolled from the quarry to the location of the moai, and rolled up large ramps using the parbuckling technique.

"In parbuckling, a line would have been wrapped around the pukao cylinder, and then people would have pulled the rope from the top of the platform," said Lipo. "This approach minimizes the effort needed to roll the statue up the ramp. Like the way in which the statues were transported, parbuckling was a simple and elegant solution that required minimum resources and effort."

Previous theories about pukao transport include sliding the stone hats up a ramp or gradually building a pile of stones beneath them.

"Easter Island is often treated as a place where prehistoric people acted irrationally, and that this behavior led to a catastrophic ecological collapse," said Lipo. "The archaeological evidence, however, shows us that this picture is deeply flawed and badly misrepresents what people did on the island, and how they were able to succeed on a tiny and remote place for over 500 years."

Experts from Penn State, the University of Oregon and the University of Arizona also participated in the research. The pukao studt was published in The Journal of Archaeological Sciences.

EASTER ISLAND ARCHAEOLOGY PROJECT DIGS UP ISLAND'S SECRETS

The remote Pacific island, which is located more than 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile, continues to be a source of fascination for historians. In 2016, research conducted on artifacts from the island questioned the theory that the ancient civilization there was destroyed by warfare.

Experts, also from Binghamton University, studied hundreds of ancient items found on the shores of Easter Island. Previously, the artifacts were thought to be spear points, but analysis reveals that they were likely general purpose tools.

Carved from obsidian, or volcanic glass, thousands of the triangular objects, known as mata'a, litter the surface of the island.

Some scientists have estimated, that, at its height, Easter Island’s population may have been as high as 20,000, but fell over centuries after the island’s trees and palms were cut down to build canoes and transport its famous giant statues.  One theory suggests that the deforestation led to soil erosion, impacting the island’s ability to support wildlife and farming, and the collapse of its civilization.

When the Dutch arrived at the island in 1722, its population was 3,000 or less. Only 111 inhabitants were living on Easter Island by 1877.

However, other experts have questioned whether Easter Island ever supported a large population, citing instead the arrival of Europeans, who brought diseases and took islanders away as slaves.

THE MYSTERIOUS EGYPTIAN TRI-LOBED DISC

In the first wing of the Egyptian Museum of the Cairo between two rooms close to the Momias Room, one cannot help but be surprised to see in a small display cabinet, although not without some difficulty caused by the reflections of the light on the crystal that covers it, a solitary object similar to a wheel or stone disc.

This strange object has disturbed and continues disturbing all the Egyptologists that have had occasion to study it at great length. The first of them was its discoverer, Brian Walter Emery, one of the most important Egyptologists of 20th Century and the author of a classic volume on Egyptology, Archaic Egypt, that continues to be, after many years, an important bibliographical reference for the study and an understanding of the origins of the Old Egyptian Civilization.

Making excavations in 1936, in the archaeological zone of Sakkara, he discovered the Tomb of Prince Sabu. He was the son of Adjuib Pharaoh, governor of the I Dynasty (3,000 B.C.).

Between utensils of funeral objects that were extracted, Emery’s attention was powerfully drawn by an object that he initially defined in his report on the Great Tombs of the I Dynasty as: “… a container in the form of schist bowl…”.

Years later, in his previously mentioned work, Archaic Egypt, he commented on the object with a word that perfectly summarizes the reality of the situation and the discomfort the object causes; “cachibache” (a small hole that threatens to become a much larger hole)”…

A satisfactory explanation has not yet been obtained on the peculiar design of this object…”.

This object is approximately 61 centimeters in diameter, and 10.6 centimeters in height in the center. It is made of schist, a very fragile and delicate rock, which requires very laborious carving.

Its form resembles that of a plate or a concave steering wheel of a car, with a series of three cuts or curved “shovels” that resemble the helix of a boat, and in the center, an orifice with a rim that acts as the outside receiver of some axis of a wheel or some other unknown mechanism, arranged to turn.

As it is well known by all, the official position maintained by Egyptology with respect to the appearance and use of the wheel on the part of the Egyptians, is very clear and leaves no room for doubt. The introduction of the wheel in Egypt they assure us, coincided with the invasion of the Hicsos at the end of the Medium Empire, in 1640 B.C.,

They used it, on among other things, their military chariots.

The question then is inevitable: if it is not a wheel, what is the strange object that appeared in the Tomb of Prince Sabu, 1,400 years before the invasion of the Hicsos?

In spite of the complexity of this problem, the subject has become even more serious as a result of the technical studies that a variety of investigators have made, impelled by the surprising and strange design of this device.

As well, the Egyptologist Cyril Aldred reached the conclusion that, independently of what the object was used for or what it represented, its design was without a doubt, a copy of a previous, much older metallic object.

In fact, this schist wheel appeared in Tomb of Prince Sabu, along with other strange copper objects, practically the only metal that the Egyptians then knew.

The doubt that has been plaguing us is wondering how the ancient Egyptians could design so delicate and complex a structural object more than 5,000 years ago.

A structure that in the case of the three strange cuts or curved shovels, induces one to think almost immediately about the use of this object in an average liquid.

This detail, next to the excellent orifice in the central part, makes us also suspect that this object is only a small part of a more complex mechanism, and that it was saved thanks to a stone reproduction for some unknown reason, made by an artist, with unknown tools.

But…, what mechanisms existed 5,000 years ago in the Valley of the Nile?

According to the typical and expected view of the archaeologists and pro-government Egyptologists, this object is no more than a tray or the pedestal of some candelabrum, with a design a product of blind chance”.

Although by chance, this peculiar object closely mirrors the design of one of the pieces that Lockheed developed to be fitted hermetically within a full case of lubricant.

One of the most unusual pieces is a strange circular object, fashioned in schist and with a central hub which gives it the appearance of having been designed to fit onto a pole.

Bearing in mind that it is of pre-dynastic date, circa 3000 BC, it represents supreme ability in working hard stone, the “lobes” looking as though they had been bent over. Indeed, it is possible that it is a copy of an original copper artifact.

One theorist who has attempted to explain its function is William Kay, an English engineer. He has suggested that it was actually a ritualistic tri-flamed oil lamp.

A wick system comprising six bundles of rushes, bound together, were held in place by the lobes and thus kept immersed in the oil. If the ends of the four bundles were separated sufficiently, then twelve separate flames may have resulted instead of three.

The numbers 3 and 12 are recognised as having symbolic significance for the ancient Egyptians. Bill Kay’s concept seems entirely reasonable, especially in the light of a pole-supported oil lamp from Deir el Medina, also exhibited in the Cairo Museum.

Do Ancient Sumerian Scribes Really Describe Extraterrestrial Contact?

Ancient history is full of documented oddities, ones that unfortunately we continue to ignore, but we’re getting better and the collective human mind is opening up to new explanations for the nature of reality, and a host of other topics, like human history, for example.

A lot of ‘lore’ from our ancient world seems to be in the process of being re-discovered, a great example would be the correlationsbetween ancient eastern spiritual beliefs and quantum physics, with its strong correlation and dependence on consciousness. The example in this article deals with ancient lore of beings from other worlds, and it’s even more interesting because of the modern day UFO disclosure we’re seeing and the evidence suggesting that some of them could be extraterrestrial is quite fascinating, at least for those who’ve taken the time to look.

When contemplating specifically about extraterrestrials, there are many examples to choose from. Whether it’s the Star People that Native North American stories speak of, or modern day supposed encounters with different types of extraterrestrial beings, believe me, there is no shortage.

Perhaps one of the most well-known stories comes from the work of Zecharia Sitchin, a man who authored many books proposing an explanation for human origins involving ancient astronauts. Renowned researcher Jim Marrs in his book, Our Occulted History, describes the work of Sitchin  and his findings well,

“In several accounts etched permanently into their clay tablets, the ancient Sumerian scribes gave more detail as to the source of their knowledge. They wrote that 432,000 years before the Great Flood, the Anunnaki arrived and taught them the basics of civilization… According to the interpretations of Zecharia Sitchin and many others, the term Anunnaki means “those who came from the heavens to Earth.” In Sitchin’s narrative, these were astronauts from the planet Nibiru who traveled through the asteroid belt and initially landed in the Persian Gulf.”

Marrs goes on to describe how once there, they began to colonize and search for gold, as well as manipulate the DNA of “primitives” on Earth, who eventually came to be the kings and aristocratic families on Earth, which eventually led to devastation and war all over the globe.

Stories of other worldly beings are also present in several African legends of creation, like the Zulu people, which means “sky” people. Their connection to the stories of Zecharia Sitchin are quite fascinating, as the stories of these “Gods” have the same aspects ascribed to the Anunnaki in the Sumerian tablets. If you want to hear some examples of stories, just google Credo Mutwa. South African researcher Michael Tellinger, also describes it quite well, this is another excerpt from Our Occulted History. 

“Most of African mythology speaks about the same things, the sky gods the abelungu who came down from the sky. They created the people, to mine gold. Credo Mutwa (and African shaman) tells us Abantu in Zulu means the children of Antu. Antu is the Sumerian Goddess of the Abzu – where the gold came from. Lord Enki is also known as Enkei as the creator-god, the Sumerian medicine man. He cloned a species. His symbol is on the medical symbol, caduceus. This is one of the oldest symbols on the earth encoded with so much knowledge and information we can spend a lecture on it alone.” 

Another example could be Quetzalcoatl, considered to be a mythical tale. Spanish chronicler, Juan de Torquemada, states that Quetzalcoatl was ‘a fair and ruddy complexioned man with a long beard’. Researcher Graham Hancock describes him as follows:

“A mysterious person… a white man with strong formation of body, broad forehead, large eyes, and a flowing beard. He was dressed in a long, white robe reaching to his feet. He condemned sacrifices, except of fruits and flowers, and was known as the god of peace. When addressed on the subject of war he is reported to have stopped up his ears with his fingers.”  (source)

To be honest, as Astronaut Story Musgrave once said, “there are probably trillions of different races out there doing star travel.”

The story of human history may not be how it’s being told, the way it’s told now is quite dull in my opinion, we are stuck on creationism and evolution as our only two options when it could be something far greater and more complex and wild, with a little mix of everything, perhaps. The only certainty is what we are taught doesn’t seem to fit in with all the weird discoveries that’ve been made over the years of giants and strange humanoid skulls/body’s.

Our world is drenched in secrecy, and what are perceived as the most “outlandish” ideas, in a lot of cases, usually hold the most validity. Truth does not stop, it’s always there. However, the human perception of truth and reaction to it sort of determines what we create as truth. If we all believe something to be, it might be? But those are deeper discussions, the point is, there are truths which remain, when humanity will choose to accept them so we can move on from the ones that do not resonate, is a different story, but we’re doing a good job so far.

According to Sitchin, approximately half a million years ago these Anunnaki beings came to Earth because our planet and their planet came in close proximity.

Sitchin’s work has been criticized and rejected by mainstream academia, in the same way as parapsychology. For example, a statistics professor at UC Irvine published a paper showing that parapsychological experiments have produced much stronger results than those showing a daily dose of aspirin to help prevent a heart attack.

When you push the boundaries of beliefs, no matter how many researchers, scholars, and academics agree with you, there will always be the big one that doesn’t and that is the person who will get the most publicity in order to discredit you, in order to maintain some sort of status quo. This is what has happened with many people, including Sitchin, but there’s a reason why millions of people are so fascinated by all of the connections made by him, and those who have followed his work or do research in a similar area.

For example, Paul Von Ward, a prominent author, researcher and psychologist wrote,

“Although I do not agree with his cosmology… his elucidation of historical details and connection of them to other fields of knowledge stand up under comparative review with the work of other scholars. His summary of information relating to the ‘olde gods’ known in Sumeria as the Anunnaki presents a cohesive and defensible mixture of textual material and judicious interpretation.”

An author who has studied more than three hundred translations of ancient Mesopotamian and Vedic writings, C.L. Turnage wrote,

“After studying Sitchin’s theory, I began my own contemplation of the pre-biblical Babylonian Epic of Creation or Enuma Elish. It was from a study of this narrative that Sitchin became aware of the planet Nibiru and its establishment within our own solar system. This tale was originally written on seven clay tablets, each corresponding to a day of creation… After my own study of these chronicles, I concurred with Sitchin’s findings.”

Nonetheless, fascinating facts remain unexplainable unless we take an extraterrestrial perspective. Take for example that ancient Sumerians were accurately describing the planets Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto… These planets can’t even be seen without a telescope.

The Tenth Planet

This kind of thing has been quite popular at certain points in human history. In 1981 scientists were contemplating the possibility regarding strange evidence suggesting an additional solar body in our system.

Marrs’ book goes on to describe an article by Hugh McCann, a writer for Detroit News at the time,

“If the new evidence from the U.S. Naval Observatory of a 10th planet in the solar system is correct, it could prove that Sumerians… were far ahead of modern man in astronomy.” 

The Sumerians called it the 12th planet, but they counted the moon and the sun so it makes sense.

On the 30th of December in 1983, the Washington Post had a front page headlinethat read,

“A heavenly body as large as the giant planet Jupiter and possibly so close to Earth that ti would be part of this solar system has been found in the direction of the constellation Orion by an orbiting telescope aboard the U.S. Infrared Astronomical Satellite (IRAS). So mysterious is the object that astronomers do not know…”

What also comes to mind here are the recent statements by Apollo 15 astronaut Al Worden,

“We are the aliens, but we just think they’re somebody else, but we’re the ones who came from somewhere else. Because somebody else had to survive, and they got in a little space craft and they came here and they landed and they started civilization here, that’s what I believe. And if you don’t believe me, go get books on the ancient Sumerians and see what they had to say about it, they’ll tell you right up front.”

His comments differ significantly from Dr. Edgar Mitchell’s, who said he “happens to be privileged enough to be in on the fact that we are not alone on this plant ” and that we have “been visited many times.”

Our world is drenched in secrecy, do you think if such a body in our solar system was detected that we’d even hear anything about it? Most likely not.

Again, the story of the Anunnaki could very will be true, but this was a long time ago, and if that planet does exist, perhaps things have changed on it as well. We are looking at, if anything, one small account of extraterrestrial contact that’s occurred throughout this planet’s history.

Australia’s Songlines: An Ancient Network Known As The ‘Footprints Of The Ancestors’

Sprawled across the Australian continent lies a network of invisible pathways known to the aborigine as ‘Footprints of the Ancestors’. In the West, we know them as ‘Song Lines’ and ‘Dream-Tracks’. They were part of the aboriginal creation myth which spoke of legendary beings who wandered the earth, singing out the name of everything that crossed their path – birds, animals, plants, rocks, waterholes – and so singing the world into existence.

Each tribe had their own songline, passed down to them by their ancestors. It was their responsibility to preserve these sacred chants and follow the laws and traditions contained within. They had a duty to protect their songlines, for an unsung territory eventually became a wasteland. If the songs were forgotten, the land itself would wither and die. By singing a landmarks creation song, the country would come to life and flourish with health and vigor.

A songline also acts as a map and compass. Providing an aboriginal person knew the song, they could always find their way across the country. A man on a “Walkabout” will always travel down one of their Songlines. If he were to stray from his dream-track, he would be trespassing on somebody else’s land. As long as he stuck to the track, he’d always find people who shared his Dreaming, from whom he could expect hospitality.

In theory, the whole of Australia could be read as a musical score (known as a song map). There is hardly a rock or creek in the country that cannot be sung. You can visualize Songlines as a labyrinth of epic stories, turning this way and that, in which every sacred site can be read in terms of its geology, function, and legends associated with it.

Anywhere in the bush you can point to some feature of the landscape and ask an Aboriginal person, “What’s the story there?” or “Who’s that?” The chances are they’ll answer “Kangaroo” or “Budgerigar” or “Jew Lizard”, depending on which Ancestor who walked that way. ‘And the distance between two such sites can be measured as a stretch of a song.
