Scientists Say It Might Be Impossible To Get Stoned In Space

Geez, is it me or is space travel becoming more and more of a bummer every day? Scientists have recently discovered that time in space poses many mysterious health risks to human beings. The constant bombardment of cosmic radiation astronauts face in the vacuum of space has been found to increase the risk of developing unexplained cardiovascular diseases. More worryingly, researchers recently discovered that astronauts’ genes can be permanently altered as a result of spending time in space. Now, would-be astronauts have another disappointing space discovery to harsh their collective buzz: scientists have found that it is likely impossible to get stoned in space.

“Dude…I finally get why they call it ‘space.’ Woah…”

What a bummer. Even though toking up, putting on Dark Side of the Moon, and staring down at the Earth for hours sounds like a perfect way to spend one’s first time in outer space, a new study published in the journal Brain Structure and Function has found that background radiation levels in space can affect the hippocampal regions of the brain responsible for, among other things, cannabinoid reception:

These results demonstrate that energetic charged particles at space-relevant low doses elicit surprisingly selective long-term plasticity of synaptic microcircuits in the hippocampus. The magnitude and persistent nature of these alterations in synaptic function are consistent with the observed perturbations in cognitive performance after irradiation.

Researchers bombarded poor, innocent laboratory mice with radiation similar to that found throughout the solar system. After irradiation, the activity of cannabinoids (CB1) and cannabinoid receptor basket cells (CB1BCs) in the mouse brains was found to be significantly decreased due to the fact that the radiation triggered the release and uptake of another neurotransmitter, GABA:

In irradiated mice, GABA release from CB1BCs onto PCs [(hippocampal neurons)] was dramatically increased. This effect was abolished by CB1 blockade, indicating that irradiation decreased CB1-dependent tonic inhibition of GABA release.

Ok, you’re probably wondering why scientists would study this particular aspect of radiation-induced cognitive impairment. Given the facts that recreational and/or medical marijuana is now legal in 28 states and a trip to Mars could last over 300 days, it’s not a stretch to assume that many marijuana users might not want to go without their preferred therapy of choice on a long flight to their new home on the red planet or an off-world asteroid mining colony.

“It’s for my space glaucoma.”

If these discoveries don’t discourage you from taking a commercial spaceflight in the near future, there’s always a chance you could, you know, blow up on the launch pad or be incinerated upon reentry into the atmosphere. Still totally worth it, though.

Recanting Roswell?

Recalling the previous posting about the dueling 70th Anniversary Roswell UFO conferences coming up in 2017, this would seem to indicate that the Roswell crash story's stock is rising. (Veteran Roswell researcher Kevin Randle reminded me that there were also two competing UFO conferences going on in Roswell for the 50th anniversary celebrations back in 1997. At that time there were two UFO museums operating in Roswell.)

However, the following would seem to indicate that Roswell stock is falling,  or perhaps has even itself crashed. In the British publication Fortean Times (issue 346 published October 2016), there is a review of Kevin Randle's latest book, Roswell in the 21st Century, written by Jerome Clark. (I've completely lost track of how many books Randle has written, fiction and nonfiction. He once told me that for a while he had his own Book of the Month club - that is, he wrote twelve books in twelve months!)

Clark's review is titled "Recanting Roswell Certainty," a provocative title to say the least, especially as it concerns Randle, one of the most dedicated long-term promoters of the Roswell incident as an ET saucer crash. Clark says that

Roswell in the 21st Century, which never insults one's intelligence, is noteworthy for being the first recantation by a major figure in the controversy, now nearing its fourth decade.

"Recantation?" That's a pretty strong word.

In my Bad UFOs book, I quoted Karl Pflock's 2001 book Roswell – Inconvenient Facts and the Will to Believe. Pflock  demonstrated inconsistencies such  that of the just four people publicly identified as witnesses to alien bodies, “not one of the purported firsthand witnesses to alien bodies and a lone survivor is credible. Not one.” (Pflock, p. 118-120).

In this review, Clark continues:

Randle was initially taken with what seemed to be credible evidence. Eventually (as I did), he grew doubtful of that evidence, especially as it concerned the supposed recovery of dead aliens. Of the eight claimants (he spoke directly with all) who said they had observed such bodies, Randle writes, "not one [..] turned out to be telling the truth."

So Randle has raised the number of those who lied about seeing alien bodies at Roswell from four to eight, and there never were more than eight. This completely undercuts the need for bizarre ET or non-ET explanations for alleged alien body sightings at Roswell. Stalin and Mengele sent in deformed children in a Commie Nazi saucer: Annie Jacobs. The U.S. Army flew in dwarfish captured Japanese pilots in a bizarre craft: Nick Redfern. The Air Force dropped crash test dummies in the desert: U.S. Air Force. All of these highly implausible explanations are unnecessary, because there are no truthful accounts of alien bodies at Roswell to explain.

Randle doggedly pursued the Holy Grail of alien evidence at Roswell for more than thirty years. When he realized it wasn't there, he was brave enough to admit it.

But we should appreciate that Clark also shared Randle's gradually increasing wisdom:

Randle and I evolved, if separately, in the same direction: initial sympathy, growing doubt, at last a virtual certainty that whatever took place in New Mexico nearly seven decades ago, a crashed spacecraft did not precipitate it. Nor, for that matter, did a weather balloon.

He mentions his growing skepticism twice to make sure we get the message. Because to Jerome Clark, it's always about him. Let me remind the reader what Clark was writing during the heyday of Roswell belief. In the March 1991 issue of Fate magazine, Clark predicted that after the publication of two forthcoming books on Roswell by Randle/Schmitt and Friedman/Berliner, 

Major media - not just the usual tabloid papers and television shows - will pick up the story and recount their own investigations, which will confirm the ufologists' findings.

How did that prediction work out, Jerry? 😃

By a curious coincidence, if indeed it is a coincidence, soon after I read the Fortean Times review, Randle contacted me to ask if I'd like to be a guest on his new radio show. I happily accepted. He said we could talk about my new book, and I said I'd like to talk about his, as well. Here is the soundtrack of that show, recorded December 14, 2016 and first broadcast on December 17:

We discussed many things about UFOlogy. I won't take the time to summarize them, you can listen to the show above. Randle is pretty skeptical about alien abduction claims. I asked Randle if Clark is correct that Randle had interviewed all eight persons who claimed to have seen alien bodies, and found none of them were "telling the truth." He confirmed it.

I asked Randle, if he no longer thinks that the Roswell incident was extraterrestrial, what does he think it was? He said he really doesn't know. It wasn't E.T., but it wasn't a Mogul balloon, either. Randle then launched into a critique of skeptics being unskeptical because they insist that the debris found was from the once-secret Mogul spy balloon project, when the evidence supposedly proves that it was not. Thus skeptics are, he says, as illogical as the ET believers.

I recalled that there had been some claims that the specific Mogul flight cited as the source of the Roswell debris could not have landed where that debris was found, because of wind directions and such. But that was not what Randle was talking about. He insisted that Mogul's Flight 4 was never launched, because there is no official record of its launch, and a researcher's diary entry suggests that it was not launched. Now I had not been following the details of that argument and could not argue against it. I said that I did not insist that the debris must be from Mogul, if it could be conclusively shown otherwise. Randle himself had stated that balloons carrying radar reflectors were being launched all over the country, on a regular basis. I suggested that the Roswell debris could be from one of these. He insisted that it would have been immediately recognized if it were. Perhaps so, but perhaps normal objectivity might be lost in a time of Flying Saucer excitement.

After that show, the debate over Mogul Flight #4 generated considerable discussion among skeptics on Facebook. The point was that Randle's argument is based on a particular interpretation of conflicting notes and data concerning Project Mogul, and is by no means an ironclad proof that Mogul Flight #4 was never launched. Much hinges on the interpretation of whether a "cluster of balloons," that everyone agrees was launched at that time, describes a complete balloon array as was apparently found. For those interested in the details, Tim Printy gives the full, convoluted story about the disputed Mogul flight, "Crashology's Last Stand."   (scroll down to page 5). Randle has since written more about this. Be sure to read the comments for more debate on the Mogul controversy. In any case, it is far more likely that ambiguous record keeping has been misinterpreted and that Mogul Flight 4 was actually launched, than that some unknown craft of whatever origin crashed near Roswell.

Otherworldly Technology? The temple of Seti I and the flying machines of ancient Egypt

Ancient Egypt contains countless mysteries, in fact, I love to call it the land of Pharaoh’s and mysteries. Simply put, many of the enigmas present in Egypt do not seem to have a clear explanation. At least mainstream scholars are unable to clarify some of the curiosities that surround the ancient Egyptian civilization.

One clear example is the construction of the Pyramids or the Sphinx of Giza.

However, equally puzzling is the written language of the ancient Egyptians.

In fact, Egyptian hieroglyphs only began to be deciphered after the discovery of the Rosetta stone, but they continue to be a constant source of astonishment for archaeologists.

In order to find astonishing ancient Egyptian hieroglyphs we only have to travel to the temple of Seti I in Abydos, where we can find strange carvings of what appear to be a helicopter (among other things) present on a slab inside the temple.

The mysterious hieroglyphs can be observed in the hypostyle hall of the temple of Seti I in Abydos. Carved onto the slab, the strange hieroglyphs are said to clearly represent the figure of a helicopter, an airplane, a submarine and a kind of flying saucer or zeppelin.

But is it possible that the ancient Egyptians knew about such vehicles thousands of years ago? Maybe some of them visited ancient Egypt in the distant past. Mainstream scholars say NO, and point towards palimpsest.

Experts explain the curious symbols in the following way:

The original glyphs which date back from the Reign of Seti I were “erased” and replaced by a new set of hieroglyphics carved during the reign of Ramses II which turned out to be these strange looking figures which according to researchers, accidentally resemble modern day machines.

Take notices that this theory has not been accepted by all archaeologists equally.

In time, the slab where the hieroglyphs were carved became eroded resulting in the curious symbols we see today which resemble helicopters, an airplane, a submarine and a kind of flying saucer thanks to Pareidolia.

With the resulting images of palimpsest our mind sees objects that it can recognize, but incongruent with the time. Experts also add that the images displayed by media are often retouched to accurately display a similarity with modern vehicles.

In this image, you can see what scholars believe happened with the hieroglyphs.

And while Egyptologists may be right when it comes to palimplest –not saying that they are or are not—it is curious that all the objects we ‘see’ are in fact flying vehicles.

Some believe that the curious hieroglyphs at the temple of Abydos are one of the best pieces of evidence that ancient civilizations –in this case the ancient Egyptian civilization— witnessed extremely advanced technology thousands of years ago, which may have originated somewhere else.

The Weapons of the Gods: The Mahabharata and atomic blasts, 12,000 years ago

“…a single projectile…Charged with all the power of the Universe…” Does this verse from the ancient Mahabharata sound anything like a description of a weapon?

Even Manhattan Project chief scientist Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer –who was apparently familiar with ancient Sanskrit writings knew that atomic blasts had occurred in the distant past on Earth.

In an interview conducted after he watched the first atomic test, he quoted from the Bhagavad Gita:

“‘Now I am become Death, the Destroyer of Worlds.’ I suppose we all felt that way.”

Furthermore, when a student asked Dr. Oppenheimer if the first nuclear device that went off was the one at Alamogordo. during the Manhattan Project, he responded… Well … yes. In modern times, yes, of course.

Written in the Ramayana –an ancient Indian epic poem which narrates the struggle of the divine Prince Rama to rescue his wife Sita from the demon king Ravana—we find more interesting details which apparently also describe powerful ancient weapons:

“(It was a weapon) so powerful that it could destroy the earth in an instant–
A great soaring sound in smoke and flames– And on it sits death…”.

According to many authors and researchers, not only does the Mahabharata describe powerful ancient weaponry used by the ‘Gods,’ but is shows clear evidence of atomic blast that occurred tens of thousands of years ago.

Looking at the translated version of the Mahabharata, many agree that it evidently describes how ‘Gods’ used advanced weapons on Earth tens of thousands of years ago. The catastrophic events that rocked the continents are described in the following way:

Gurkha, flying a swift and powerful Vimana, hurled a single projectile charged with all the power of the Universe.  An incandescent column of smoke and flame, as bright as ten thousand suns, rose in all its splendor.

It was an unknown weapon and iron thunderbolt, a gigantic messenger of death, which reduced to ashes the entire race of the Vrishnis and Andhakas.

The corpses were so burned as to be unrecognizable. 

Their hair and nails fell out.
Pottery broke without any apparent cause, and the birds turned white. 

…After a few hours, all foodstuffs were infected… …to escape from this fire; the soldiers threw themselves in streams to wash themselves and all their equipment. 

This epic, ancient battle, is described in great detail in the Drona Parva –the seventh of eighteen books of the Indian epic Mahabharata. According to historian and translator Kisari Mohan Ganguli, the secret ancient Hindu writings are full of such descriptions.

This painting from the 15th century is the ultimate evidence of UFO’s

There are numerous paintings created hundreds of years ago with enigmatic and unexplained objects incorporated by artists, but this painting from the 15th century is considered as one of the most incredible paintings from the past which clearly depicts a UFO.

It seems that in the distant past, people witnessed incredible aerial phenomenon which they could not explain, but considered them important enough to portray them in some of the most important paintings created in the last 500 years.

A painting called “The Madonna with Saint Giovannino”, created in the 15th century is without a doubt, one of the most enigmatic ancient paintings ever created by man. It is an ancient painting that according to many, depicts a mysterious Disc-shaped UFO hovering in the sky, and is considered by many people as the ultimate vehicle that during millennia, mankind was visited by highly advanced alien civilizations.

The enigmatic painting was created Domenico Ghirlandaio (1449-1494) and is currently located on display at the Loeser collection in the Palazzo Vecchio. In the mysterious painting we can clearly see that above Mary’s right shoulder the artists painted an enigmatic UFO, and below this incredible scene, we can observe a man clearly looking at the mysterious object in the sky.

Located on the right side of the painting, we see a man holding his right arm above his eyes with which the artist made sure to send a message that this object was very bright. To the left of the image in the upper corner, we can see an object that looks like the sun.

This means that the artist painted this disk shaped object, giving it a shiny detail and he made sure to illustrate it to the right of the sun so we know this bright object cannot be confused for the sun, this disk shaped object does not look like your ordinary cloud, so if it is not the sun nor a cloud what could it possibly be? Ufologists argue that this painting clearly indicates that hundreds of years ago, ancient mankind witnessed the mysterious phenomenon in the sky which they could not explain. This is why similar UFO’s can be seen in other paintings ranging from 1400’s to the late nineteenth century.

But just like “The Madonna with Saint Giovannino , there are other extremely strange paintings all around the world. Another incredible example is without a doubt located at the Visoki Dečani monastery  in Kosovo: The Crucifixion of Christ.

Another painting that we find extremely interesting is “The Annunciation” painted by Carlo Crivelli. In his painting  “The Annunciation” there are several objects that stand out from the rest of this extremely detailed piece of art. One object, in particular, can be seen in the sky out of which a mysterious beam of light is emerging from.

Is it possible that paintings as the  Madonna with Saint Giovannino, The Crucifixion of Christ and The Annunciation are in fact evidence of otherworldly visitations? Is it possible that in the distant past, artists observed these mysterious objects in the skies, and decided the include them in paintings that today are considered of extreme value? Interestingly, thousands of years before these paintings were created, ancient mankind depicted in caves all around the world, similar objects with humanoid figures that remain unexplained by mainstream scholars.

Aliens: Closer Than We May Realize

Humanity has a lot of finely tuned instruments pointed at the sky. But it's a really big sky.

Science fiction movies frequently make it seem as though hostile extraterrestrials might be able to sneak through Earth’s atmosphere, emerge from the clouds without warning, and start wrecking shit. But is it really possible that spaceships could suddenly appear out of the vast blackness of space unnoticed by the myriad instruments on the ground? Depending on the aliens’ level of technological sophistication, one can argue that almost anything is possible. Humans have pointed a lot of sensors skyward, but it’s not clear they would really give us a proper heads up before our extraterrestrial guests arrive.

It sort of depends on exactly what we’re looking for. The search for extraterrestrial intelligence, better known as SETI, has been fruitless so far, but we keep investing and more and more money towards projects aimed at answering whether or not we’re alone in the universe. That investigation basically revolves around detecting various signals that point to the existence of technologically advanced extraterrestrials. And that also means the instruments we can use to observe space let us see farther into the universe than ever before. How far exactly? Douglas Vakoch tells Inverse that the answer has more to do with defining “see” than with arriving at a specific number.

A SETI researcher and the president of METI International, Vakoch divides the tools used to do SETI research into two groups: optical, and radio. Optical instruments, which look for lasers or other light patterns that suggest the presence of intelligent aliens, can make decent observations up to about 1,000 light-years away. “Beyond 1,000 light-years, however, it can get more difficult,” Vakoch says. Those instruments include the Boquete Optical SETI Observatory in Panama, and the Owl Observatory in Michigan.

Radio instruments, on the other hand, make a lot more sense for investigating signs of extraterrestrial life. For one, we can listen in on radio waves moving through space from about 10,000 light-years and beyond. Radio waves are also a pretty specific sign of a technologically advanced civilization while a star system may be expressing a strange laser-based signal in the distance, that might also just be an unexplained natural phenomenon (as we’re sort of learning when it comes to Tabbys Star.

Of course, as Vakoch emphasizes, our abilities to listen in on the universe dwindles as the distance increases. Aliens broadcasting themselves 10,000 light-years away will likely avoid detection.

But then again, SETI is a two-way street. When asked whether we currently have a maximum limit from which we can detect alien life, Seth Shostak, the director of the Center for SETI Research at the SETI Institute, says, “It depends on how much money the aliens have to invest in their own technology.” He’s referring to the fact that intelligent lifeforms might possess technologies that allow them to broadcast their existence to us from farther away and offset the limits of our own instruments.

“In theory, there’s no limit,” he adds.

It’s important to remember that SETI investigations don’t just watch the universe in all direction in hopes we’ll stumble on something. Scientists focus our instruments on certain regions of space that are most promising — i.e. the exoplanets or star systems that possess the best chances for developing habitable environments.

“We start close to home,” says Vakoch, “and look at sun-like stars. As we move the investigation farther out, we start to hone in on stars or star regions that might be useful. For example, a current trend in the SETI community is the study of red dwarf stars, which were historically ignored. The beauty of red dwarfs is that they last a long time,” says Vakoch, sustaining planetary systems that have a much longer chance of developing habitable traits. Red dwarfs make up about 80 to 90 percent of the stars in our own neighborhood within the Milky Way galaxy.”

There’s another big factor to consider. SETI research focuses on finding aliens that want to be found — or at the very least, are not actively trying to hide from human detection. If a hostile fleet of extraterrestrial warships were stationed somewhere in the galaxy or was en route to the solar system, they could very well possess a number of highly advanced technologies that could shroud their presence. Space itself is incredibly big anyways — humans don’t have eyes and ears scanning all parts of the universe around us.

Aliens might be able to slip into orbit, but if they were traveling in anything truly large it might be quite difficult for them to do so without severely disrupting our orbital equipment or even taking out a geosynchronous satellite. Still, that’s not an impossible feat.

“If they’re sufficiently intelligent,” says Vakoch, “there’s no reason to think they couldn’t be anywhere.”

When Aliens Attack, Protect the Moon

The target making us vulnerable to extraterrestrial assault is 238,900 miles away.

In the world of science fiction, when aliens attack the Earth, they often go after another rocky sphere. That would be the moon, our planet’s only natural satellite. Although there are exactly zero humans currently residing on the moon, zero pieces of essential equipment or instruments (although let’s be real, those lunar go-karts are pretty dope) situated on its surface or its orbit, and no concrete sense of whether it possesses any valuable resources, the moon is essential to our species’ survival on this planet. If hostile aliens were to blow it to bits or cause some serious damage to it, human would be in serious trouble — even if we managed to successfully repel an extraterrestrial threat.

The moon has played a key role in shaping the way natural processes of Earth, and it continues to do so today. The moon is thought to have been formed just a mere 30 million years after the Earth (which itself is 4.53 billion years old). Since then, the moon’s single greatest (and most obvious) effect on the Earth has been the mediation of the ebb and flow of tides on the planet’s bodies of water.

Scientist believe that in the infancy of this relationship, the moon’s distance from Earth was half of what it is today — and this resulted in much more extreme tides. These tides drove heat from the equator to the poles, leading to ice ages. These glacial shifts spurred more rapid migratory patterns in various species, resulting in a more diverse array of life around the globe. In fact, because of how important water is to molecular processes in primitive life and organic materials, tide shifts may have acted as a kind of natural way for those chemical reactions to get rid of or acquire water in the formation of basic structures like nucleic acids. In other words, tides may have jumpstarted or encouraged the evolution of life on Earth.

Because it's gone forever.

Okay, that’s a pretty cool history lesson, but what about today? What exactly would be the biggest impact on our lives today if the moon disappeared or had a chunk ripped out from itself?”

“We’d lose the normal rhythm of tides,” says Noah Petro, a research scientist at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center who works with the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter. He tells Inverse we’d probably lose the large tides we’re used to on a day-to-day basis, and instead experience “smaller tides, caused by the Earth’s rotation with the sun.”

The most noticeable effect this would have is that we’d see oceans around the world level off, to a certain extent. While initially that might save coastal communities from having to deal with potential floods during high-tide, it would also mean they would lose the benefits of low tide. That would wreak havoc on clams, which would have a cascading effect on underwater ecosystems as well as the beachside food shacks worldwide.

Furthermore, the moon plays a significant role in distorting water around the equator. Without a natural satellite, that water would probably redistribute itself around the poles. This might seem like a good thing for coastal cities by the ocean that are constantly threatened by rising floods. But this is awful for bodies of water inland that are fed by oceans. We might see estuaries — responsible for desalinating water naturally — dry up or become significantly reduced. Rivers and lakes further inland would also shrink by quite a bit.

Unless we manage to make artificial desalination technology viable, we’d see the whole world inundated by water shortages — and that’s already a problem much of the world is currently contending with.

Petro also cites two other significant effects the moon’s vanishing act would have on Earth. “The moon stabilizes Earth’s orbit,” he says, “so we’d see changes to the climate we’re currently used to.” He points to Mars as an indicator of what we might see. Mars doesn’t have large moons like Earth’s to affect its axial tilt as much, so the red planet is stuck with very long ice ages.

On Earth, there would be a significant amount of long winters, and “a general cooling off,” of the world at first, he says, perhaps followed by a warming. We’d see “wild extremes” that are more drawn out and last much longer than the planet has previously exhibited. Petro emphasizes that these climatic effects would certainly not be felt immediately — they would occur on a scale of 1,000 to 10,000 years. But there is one other effect that humans would have to find solutions to very quickly if the moon were blown up or hit with some sort of explosive force: debris.

A lot of material, he says, would be expelled into Earth’s orbit, and some of it might even push through the atmosphere and strike the surface. If that debris were big enough, we’d basically deal with a catastrophic scenario of falling moon rocks that not even Brian May would be able to fix.

Let’s also not forget the fact that orbital debris is also an increasing threat to the world’s satellite currently zipping around the globe. Some of those instruments are extremely important to communications systems used by governments and militaries. If aliens fired a bunch of missiles at the moon, we can basically kiss those satellites goodbye. Hopefully we have a few landlines still lying around as a backup.

On the night of January 22/23, 1950, near the Bering Sea at Kodiak, Alaska, Navy patrol pilot Lt. Smith made a routine security flight. At 2:40 a.m., he obtained a radar reading of an object 20 miles north, which quickly vanished. Eight minutes later, he picked up either the same or a different object. He radioed Kodiak to learn that no known aircraft were in the area. The Kodiak radar officer then reported that he was receiving interference, the likes of which he had never experienced.

At about 3 a.m., the USS Tillamock was south of Kodiak when one of the men on deck saw “a very fast moving red glow light, which appeared to be of exhaust nature.” The object came from the southeast, moved clockwise in a large circle around Kodiak, and returned to the southeast. Another officer came out to look, saw it in view for 30 seconds, and described it as like “a large ball of orange fire.” No sound came from the source of the light.

At 4:40 a.m. Lt. Smith, still on airborne patrol and experiencing no radar problems, now picked up another blip on his radar – so fast that it left a trail on his screen. Smith called his crew, who immediately saw the object close a five mile gap in ten seconds, an apparent speed of 1,800 mph. He tried to pursue the object, but it was too maneuverable. Witnesses described two orange lights that rotated around a common center. At some point the object made a sharp turn and headed directly toward Smith’s plane. He “considered this to be a highly threatening gesture” and turned off his lights. The UFO flew by and disappeared.

At least 36 copies of the Navy’s detailed report were sent to various security agencies, including the CIA, FBI, Air Force Intelligence, and the Department of State. None of these copies were ever released or published, although a truncated FBI copy surfaced in the 1970s as the result of a Freedom of Information Act request. The document’s explanation: “the objects must be regarded as phenomena . . . the exact nature of which could not be determined.”1

And yet publicly, the Air Force had stopped investigating UFOs. Air Force Captain Edward Ruppelt, who later headed Project Blue Book – the Air Force’s official UFO investigative body – claimed that UFO investigations at this time rated “minimum effort.” The old Project Grudge files, he said, had been “chucked into an old storage case,” and many reports were missing when he sifted through them a few years later. What, then, of the Kodiak case? We do not know the military’s response to this, but Ruppelt noted that early in 1950, the Director of Air Force Intelligence (one of the recipients of the Kodiak report) sent a letter to Air Technical Intelligence Center (ATIC) indicating that he had never issued any order to end Project Grudge. ATIC replied weakly that it had not actually disbanded Grudge, but merely transferred its project functions and no longer considered it a special project. It is possible that the Kodiak incident sparked this exchange.

THE SEARCH FOR EXTRATERRESTRIAL INTELLIGENCE SHOULD INCLUDE ALIEN DEFENSE SYSTEMS, SCIENTISTS SUGGEST

A couple of scientists have considered how the search for extraterrestrial intelligence is conducted and, working off the idea that sufficiently advanced alien beings would at least attempt to build defensive structures around their world to defend against potentially catastrophic extraplanetary threats, suggest that one way such beings might be found would be through their defense systems. In fact, the scientists contend, the aliens would not necessarily have to be much more advanced than humans.

Inverse reported recently that Milan Cirkovic and Branislav Vukotic of the Astronomical Observatory of Belgrade have suggested in a study that searching for defensive structures that guard against something as devastating as a nearby (exploding) dying star could potentially lead to the discovery of intelligent alien beings. The duo posits that intelligent beings not much more advanced than humanity could erect artificial barriers or perhaps some type of megastructure to thwart an incoming threat like a gamma-ray blast or the expended electromagnetic energy of an exploding supernova.

Cirkovic and Vukotic write in the paper (per Business Insider), “For the present purposes, we note that no part of any spiral galaxy [like our Milky Way] can be considered safe from cosmic explosions in the long run. And as the timeframe considered by an intelligent species grows longer, more relevant becomes the issue of mitigation.”

Such mitigation would include planetary defense systems, something that our own planet has yet to develop but, Cirkovic and Vukotic believe, is well within humanity’s technological reach within the next century. An alien civilization just a few decades or more technologically advanced might have thought of and created such forms of mitigation already.

Such defense systems could be found much the same way as exoplanets are detected, by studying and recording the dimming of stars, a method known as transiting. The scientists suggest that there are observables to look for that could distinguish what they refer to as “shielding swarms” (like asteroids) from exoplanets: The mass of the shield construct would be the size of a planet with a great deal less mass than it should have; the structure will not obey the natural laws of motion; unusual optical properties (like infra-red absorption); and anomalous planetary reactions within a system affected by a supernova (derived from historical data).

As Inverse pointed out, the discovery of the mysterious dimming star, KIC 8462852, had scientists speculating that the effect could be caused by mitigating phenomena like planets, swarms of comets, and even a Dyson sphere (a theoretical artificial construct that would surround a star and harness its energy). And the Inquisitr reported in September that the latest theory behind the dimming was that the star was being occluded by an interstellar band of space rock and debris.

The Cirkovic and Vukotic paper appears to be an extension of the alien megastructure idea, that where one might find something resembling an artificial formation — whether it be a manufactured sphere or a shield of unnaturally aligned asteroids — that could be used as a defense, one might just find a nearby intelligent alien civilization.

If nothing else, the paper, which was published in Acta Astronautica, provides yet another method, along with the current searches for extraterrestrial transmissions and tell-tale atmospheric biosignatures, for detecting extraterrestrial intelligence.

Of course, the search for extraterrestrial intelligence has been going on for centuries, but the formalized and collective push to find intelligence came about when Dr. Frank Drake, the scientist that formulated the now famous Drake Equation for calculating the number of extant alien civilizations capable to extraplanetary communication within the Milky Way, pointed a radio telescope from the Greenbank Observatory in West Virginia at the distant stars stars Tau Ceti and Epsilon Eridani. His efforts, along with contributions from thousands of others, morphed into what would become SETI and the SETI Institute, the mission of which is to continue the search for alien extra-solar intelligence.

NASA SCIENTIST WARNS OF ‘CATACLYSMIC’ COMETS: BIGGER, FASTER THAN ASTEROIDS AND COULD COME OUT OF NOWHERE

A NASA scientist has warned that comets arcing through our Solar System could pose more of a threat (or at least as much of one) than asteroids that are constantly in the headlines as being a potential danger to life on Earth as we know it. And there are several reasons why a comet headed on a collision course with our planet could be far more devastating, perhaps even producing an extinction level event not seen in tens of millions of years.

Live Science reported recently that the warning has gone out that not only is Earth totally unprepared for defending itself against an imminent asteroid strike but that comets on a collision trajectory would also likely pose greater risks to the planet. Such a collision might even result in the extinction of a majority, if not all, of the major living organisms on Earth.

NASA scientist Dr. Joseph Nuth of the Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland, during a news conference at the annual fall meeting of the American Geophysical Union (AGU) held in San Francisco where he made a presentation on the asteroid deflection capabilities and possibilities currently available, suggested that scientists and policymakers should broaden the scope of the potential dangers to Earth hurtling through the Solar System. He said that comets, though often dismissed, are an ever-present threat and it was time that they, too, be considered when taking measures to protect against extra-planetary-generated impacts.

“Comets have largely been ignored by people that are interested in defending the planet.”

The primary reason comets aren’t given their due, Nuth said, was the perception that little can be done to stop comets. This is in part due to the difficulty astronomers have in spotting and tracking them.

“A comet comes out of nowhere, pretty much,” Nuth said during his presentation a few hours prior to the press conference.

In fact, the last near-miss comet, Siding Spring, buzzed Mars, coming to within 87,000 miles (140,000 kilometers) of our neighboring planet. And earlier this year, an asteroid or comet slammed into Jupiter, an event caught on camera by an amateur astronomer, according to CBS News.

But Earth has to worry about comets the size of Shoemaker-Levy 9, the comet that disintegrated in the atmosphere of Jupiter in 1994 after it was caught by the gas giant’s gravitational field. Scientists estimated, according to a Shoemaker-Levy 9 question and answer webpage set up by Stephen F. Austin State University in Texas, the size of the original comet from the fragments that fell to Jupiter as being approximately 3 miles (5 kilometers) to 6 miles (10 kilometers) across. (In his presentation, when Nuth spoke of giant asteroids that Earth needed to defend against, he referenced, as was reported by the Inquisitr, the “dinosaur killer” asteroid — or comet — that impacted some 65 million years ago, a space rock estimated to have been at least 6 miles (10 kilometers) wide.)

And scientists and agencies need to worry not only about them being spotted late in their orbits and limiting the response time to mount a defense, but also about size and trajectory and velocity. As Nuth explained, comets generally are larger than the average asteroid. The orbital paths of comets have also been found to be elliptical (as opposed to asteroids, where the orbits of most are roughly like Earth’s), with the comet making its journey from the outer reaches of the Solar System, moving in for direct hits (whereas asteroids usually strike the Earth at various angles). Whereas the asteroids travel at an average speed of 44,700 miles per hour (71,940 kilometers per hour), the long elliptical trips of comets see them pick up speed as they approach the sun. For instance, comet Siding Spring was traveling at 125,000 mph (200,000 kilometers per hour) as it passed Mars.

Greater mass. Greater velocity. Greater potential for a direct collision. According to Nuth, these factors provide for “potentially cataclysmic” consequences. He also pointed out that given that extinction-event-level asteroids and meteors collide with the Earth about every 50-60 million years on average and the last impactor, the “dinosaur killer,” hit roughly 65 million years ago, the planet was due for a catastrophic asteroid or comet strike.

The problem, as Nuth pointed out at the presentation, was that there was nothing at present the Earth could do about a hazardous object headed for the Earth unless there was at least five years to prepare or launch some type of interception or deflection mission. This was why along with suggesting that measures be taken to defend the planet more effectively, he also had suggested a possible solution at the presentation.

Nuth suggested a two-part defensive strategy which would employ an “observer” and an “interceptor” spacecraft. The former would study potentially hazardous objects to deem the seriousness of the threat. The latter, which could be outfitted with a nuclear weapon, would be used for destroying or deflecting the object.

“It’s really imperative that we reduce that reaction time,” he said at the news conference.

Other methods of deflection presented at the AGU included the suggestion of the use of lasers to target an incoming object, possibly producing gaseous jet eruptions from said object and knocking it from its collision-course trajectory, and the use of a “kinetic impactor,” described as “basically a giant cannonball,” that would act to batter an asteroid — or comet — off its trajectory.

DOOMSDAY ASTEROIDS AND WATER: THE FARTHER OUT THE ASTEROID IMPACTS, TSUNAMIS FAR LESS LIKELY, SCIENTISTS SAY

Scientists using numerous computer simulation models of giant asteroid impacts on the ocean have found that the farther out into the deepest areas of the ocean, the more distance the object is when it strikes the water’s surface, has a profound impact on the potential for damage. In fact, given all the Hollywood-driven scenarios of massive tsunamis, virtual mountains of water crashing into coastal cities after an asteroid impact, it should be noted that such an event will likely never occur.

As Seeker reported this week, scientists at the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico have found that tsunamis rolling in and over coastal cities due to the impact of a massive asteroid are likely never to occur, because 70 percent of the Earth’s surface is covered by water. The researchers studied different sized asteroids making impacts at different distances — and different incoming trajectories and different water depths — from the shoreline. They also studied the effects of asteroids that exploded as airbursts. As one might expect, asteroids that hit close to shore were devastating to coastal areas. However, as the distance from shore — and the water’s depth — grew, the less likely the monstrous waves created by the impact would reach the shore as a danger.

“Movies like ‘Deep Impact’ and ‘Armageddon’ suggested that an ocean impact would produce a devastating tsunami that would affect everything along the shorelines surrounding an ocean basin… but I was skeptical,” Galen Gisler, the scientist who led the project at the Los Alamos National Laboratory, told Seeker.

Researchers found that Gisler was correct with his original hypothesis. The three-dimensional modeling showed that the tsunamis portrayed in the movies were fiction.

“An asteroid impact is a point source and it only affects the immediate region around the impact point and moreover, to create a tsunami, you need something that disturbs the entire water column,” Gisler explained.

A point source-generated wave loses its ability to propagate fairly quickly, the scientists found. As the Daily Mail noted, using the factors of a basalt asteroid, static air, and static water, “kinetic energy would be transferred to the water, and in the largest scenario, the visualization shows how a 250-meter-wide asteroid could create a transient crater, giving rise to a massive plume of water and water vapor.”

As ScienceAlert reported, such a jet of water from the initial asteroid impact could reach from hundred of meters in height to a few kilometers. Still, even with so much water falling back into the ocean, the resulting colliding shockwaves in both the atmosphere and the water, plus wind resistance at the water’s surface would work against the creation of a propagating wave.

Regardless, as Gizmodo pointed out, giant asteroids colliding with the ocean (or even exploding over it) are still incredibly dangerous, especially at point of impact — just not in the area of creating a tsunami.

“The most significant effect of an impact into the ocean is the injection of water vapor into the stratosphere, with possible climate effects,” Gisler said.

The release of water vapor into the upper atmosphere would only add to the greenhouse effect and contribute to the already runaway global warming problem facing the planet.

But the worst possible scenario, other than a direct asteroid impact on land? An airburst just off the coast. As Gisler noted, such a detonation near a “populated shore will be very dangerous” and could very well produce a tsunami like those seen in the movies.

The asteroid simulation study comes as a NASA scientist, Joseph Nuth, made remarks at a presentation in San Francisco on Monday that the Earth was unprepared to defend itself against a “dinosaur killer” asteroid strike. As the Inquisitr reported, Nuth warned that the Earth was somewhat due an extinction event-sized asteroid (considering the average time between such events is roughly 50-60 million years, and the last event occurred approximately 65 million years ago, contributing to the extinction of the dinosaurs) and “there’s not a hell of a lot we can do about it at the moment.”

For about five minutes, he filmed the mysterious glowing orb floating in the air and releasing smaller orbs.

The clip shows the extraordinary moment that the UFO appears to release multiple orbs over Fairbanks. The first orb was released at the 1:30 mark in the footage and two other orbs were released at 2:30.

Jared exclaims in awe as the UFO releases two smaller orbs in succession.

The glowing orb appears to split into three. The three orbs assume a triangle formation. One of the orbs drops earthward rapidly, but all three fade gradually and disappear.

The awestruck witness appears to suggest that the orb looks like a craft dropping smaller surveillance crafts or drones.

“Wow! They are putting out drones man. Scouting the area I guess.”

“The phone does not do it justice, but it was brighter and just simply amazing to see,” he commented on Reddit.

The footage is going viral online having received nearly 10,000 views on the witnesses’ channel alone. A few UFO interest channels, including UFO News, have also uploaded copies.

The footage has sparked speculation among UFO enthusiasts, with many touting it as the best in recent times showing an alien UFO hovering in the sky and dropping “pods” to the ground.

This is a good example of how to record a UFO Sighting.

“Wow just wow! I wish I could see alien already it’s my biggest dream.”

Skeptics have been unable to explain away the latest footage as a hoax.

“This one is truly confusing,” one said.

But some skeptics suggested it actually shows space debris entering the Earth’s atmosphere and breaking up.

However, UFO hunters pointed out the remarkable similarity between the footage and several other clips uploaded online recently showing glowing orbs dropping what appear to be “landing pods” over multiple locations across the U.S.

The Inquisitr reported in February that multiple identical footage showing UFOs dropping or jettisoning smaller orbs over several locations in the U.S. caused researchers to raise alarm that a stealth invasion of Earth could be underway.

The Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) has received several remarkably similar clips recently showing glowing or flashing orbs hovering in the sky and breaking into smaller pieces that drop or fall to the ground in a manner that suggests a large UFO releasing a landing pod.

The Inquisitr reported that UFO hunters suggested that the slew of sightings documented on video by unrelated witnesses from different parts of the country suggest alien invaders are secretly establishing sleeper cells in different parts of the county.

For instance, the footage below, uploaded to YouTube by MUFON on February 12, 2016 (Case 52934), was captured over Boise, Idaho, by a witness driving home with his wife on Christmas Eve, December 24, 2013.

The clip, which appears to show a stealth orb UFO dropping a “landing pod,” was corroborated independently by two other witnesses who observed the same incident from separate locations.

The first witness (Case 52934) described the orb as glowing in the sky with a red light. He called his wife’s attention to it. She suggested that they pull over and watch. After observing for several minutes, the witness rushed home to fetch his video camera and managed to capture the final moments when the orb dropped a smaller flashing orb to the ground.

The witness filmed as the “landing pod” dropped slowly from the larger glowing orb, after which the light of the larger orb faded gradually and disappeared.

A second resident of Boise also reported seeing the glowing UFO hovering in the sky. In his testimony, filed as Case 52930, the orb hovered for more than three minutes before it dropped a smaller orb to the ground.

“This really freaked me out. I watch the sky all of the time and have never seen anything like this before.”

A third witness (Case 52942) also reported seeing a UFO releasing an orb that fell to the ground.

The Inquisitr reported earlier on February 12, 2016, a nearly identical case (Case 53762) involving a witness from Spokane Valley in Washington, who saw a UFO with an orange-red glow at about 7 p.m. on January 26, 2016. He watched as the UFO dropped a smaller orb to the ground.

According to the witness, the larger orb flew eastward and disappeared after it had dropped the smaller orb.

“The object stopped, flashed very brightly several times and then discarded something,” the witness said. “There was glowing discharge from the bottom of the object. The object lost brightness intensity and then slowly went away.”

UFO hunters analyzing the footage at the time suggested that the mysterious orb may have been an alien craft releasing a “landing pod” or an escape capsule.

A nearly identical sighting was also reported over California in January 2015. A witness sighted and filmed a mysterious glowing orb dropping another orb as it streaked across the sky.

Members of the UFO community claim that aliens live secretly among us. They cite testimonies by former high-ranking government military officials and scientists (see below) to back claims that aliens disguised as humans live on Earth.

According to Paul Hellyer, a former Canadian defense minister, the world’s leaders know that extraterrestrial beings, such as the Greys, Pleiadians, and evil Reptilian aliens, live among us and influence global politics.

Scientific study claims: Human DNA carries a message from Extraterrestrials

According to scientists from Kazakhstan, the human DNA was encoded with an extraterrestrial signal by an advanced ancient alien civilization in the distant past.

In a study called “The “Wow! signal” of the terrestrial genetic code“, researchers Vladimir I. shCherbak and Maxim A. Makukovfrom the a Department of Mathematics, al-Farabi Kazakh National University, Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan and the Fesenkov Astrophysical Institute, Almaty, Republic of Kazakhstan respectively believe in the existence of a “Biological SETI” as they are calling it, which is a mathematical code located within the human DNA, something that cannot be explained by the process of evolution as traditional theories claim.

And all of a sudden the Ancient Astronaut theory and the idea that humans are in fact an engineered species doesn’t sound as provocative as it did in the past. Ancient Texts mention how humans were created in the image of the “Gods”, now science is a step closer to proving it.

According to writing in the Journal Icarus, the duo states: “Once fixed, the code might stay unchanged over cosmological timescales; in fact, it is the most durable construct known. Therefore it represents an exceptionally reliable storage for an intelligent signature. Once the genome is appropriately rewritten the new code with a signature will stay frozen in the cell and its progeny, which might then be delivered through space and time.” The theory presented by the two scientists suggests the human DNA is structured so precisely that it reveals an “ensemble of arithmetical and ideographical patterns of symbolic language”.

The above mentioned study has led other researchers to suggest that humans were in fact engineered or designed outside of our solar system by our creators several billion years ago, a suggestions that goes hand to hand with numerous ancient texts that speak about the creation of mankind and the creator ‘gods’.7

However, this also supports the hypothesis that life on Earth is in fact the result of interstellar life being distributed across the cosmos by asteroids and comets, which act as transporting devices which seed life onto certain planets.

shCherbak and Makukov argue that their detailed analysis of the human genome shows a previously ignored precision-type orderliness in the mapping between the DNA’s nucleotides and amino acids.

In the study, shCherbak and Makukov state that: “Simple arrangements of the code reveal an ensemble of arithmetical and ideographical patterns of symbolic language.” They say this includes the use of decimal notation, logical transformations, and the use of the abstract symbol of zero. “Accurate and systematic, these underlying patterns appear as a product of precision logic and nontrivial computing,”

Two versions of the code

In the study shCherbak and Makukov state there are versions of the code: “The nearly symmetric code version with arithmetical patterns acts as the universal standard code. With this code at hand it is intuitively easy to infer the symmetric version with its ideography. Vice versa, if the symmetric version were the universal one, it would be hardly possible to infer the nearly symmetric code with all its arithmetical patterns. Therefore, with the standard version alone it is possible to “receive” both arithmetical and ideographical components of the signal, even if the symmetric version was not found in nature. There are two possible reasons why it is actually found in euplotid ciliates: either originally when Earth was seeded there were both versions of the code with one of them remaining currently in euplotid ciliates, or originally there was only the standard version, and later casual modification in euplotid lineage coincided with the symmetric version. What concerns other known rare versions of the code, they seem neither to have profound pattern ensembles, nor to be easily inferable from the standard code. As commonly accepted, they represent later casual deviations of the standard code caused by ambiguous intermediates or codon captures (Moura et al., 2010).”  (source)

A Religious view, suggesting that a higher entity called God Created the universe and life as we know it on Earth, or that perhaps somewhere out there, in the distant corners of the universe, intelligent beings inhabit the cosmos, these beings manipulated our DNA and created mankind, perhaps in ‘their image’ as some ancient texts suggest?

While panspermia could have occurred naturally in the universe, seeding life on planets and moons, it is plausible to think about life on Earth and how it might have bee created by far more intelligent species with the ability to ‘create life’.
