The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 1)
The Night of the Shape Shifting Humanoids (Part 1)
If you develop a passion for the UFO phenomenon for as long as I have, sooner or later you wake up to notice them saucers are not as sexy as they used to be. Aerial sightings, photos of disk-shaped or triangular objects, they all start to feel irrelevant. Even the landing cases, with their trace evidence on the ground, eventually lose their allure.
Perhaps UFOs, like any other dependency, cause the user to slowly grow a certain ‘resistance’, forcing you to ‘increase the dosage’ in order to get that thrilling buzz…
Thus, the seasoned saucer addict ends up getting his kicks from the hardcore stuff: The close encounters of the 3rd kind, in which witnesses end up in hair-raising, hand-trembling proximity with the enigmatic entities in (apparent) control of the phenomenon. And make no mistake, my fellow junkies! When it comes to this old Fortean fiend, the weirder and more nonsensical the case, the sah-weeter!
And so it is, my dear Coppertops, that I present to you a prime-time, vintage humanoid encounter so head-scratchingly bizarre, you’ll probably end up with a mean case of the munchies: The Conil case.
The Location
The Spanish province of Cádiz, part of the autonomous community of Andalusia, has always had its fair share of exotic visitors. Its capital of the same name was originally founded by the Phoenicians, and was subsequently occupied by the Carthaginians, Romans and Arabs, until the latter were expelled by the Catholic kingdom of Castilla. Because of its enviable geographical position, Cádiz has always been a crossroads of civilizations, and its future will probably remain closely tied to the sea just as it has always been for thousands of years; although instead of Phoenician traders, Roman conquerors or Ottoman invaders, the local economy now depends on attracting tourists with dollars or euros to spend.
The Light
Aerial view of ‘Playa de los Bateles’ at Conil de la Frontera. Cabo Roche can be seen in the distance.
Our story takes place in the coastal town of Conil de la Frontera –Conil for short– on the night of September 29th, 1989. Although to be precise, our story began weeks earlier, with 2 couples of local youngsters: Loli Bermúdez and Pedro Sánchez, Isabel Sánchez and Pedro González (relationship between the members is not entirely clear) who were taking a placid stroll along the ‘playa de los Bateles’ or ‘Bateles beach’ (“Batel” is a traditional local term for a small, oar-propelled boat). The age of the kids varied between 17 and 23 years old, and just when they were enjoying the cool breeze from the sea and each other’s company, at around 8:30 or 9:00 pm, they suddenly noticed something odd: A glowing, round, reddish-orange object, as big as the full moon, which appeared to be standing still, some 200 meters directly above the Roche cape, approximately 5 kilometers away from their viewing position.
The amazed group contemplated the ‘light’ for around half an hour, until it silently moved toward the horizon and was out of sight. Driven by curiosity, the young witnesses decided to return the next night at the same hour, equipped with a pair of 7×50 binoculars, to see if by any chance the object would return; sure enough, the ‘red moon’ was punctual to the meeting, and performed exactly the same as the night before. The binoculars allowed the adolescents to discern 4 white dots in a square formation at the center of the glowing circle, like the flamboyant button missing from a god’s jacket.
The ‘button‘ would emit a random flash from time to time, and then it was lost out of sight towards the western horizon, after completing it’s indecipherable ‘mission’. The same bizarre operation was repeated for 14 or 15 consecutive nights, always leaving around 9:30; the kids would always remain up until 10, in hope the light would make a second come-back; it never did.
The Encounter
By that time, the witnesses’ families and others in their inner circle were aware of what the youngsters had been witnessing for a whole fortnight –whether they all gave credence to their testimony or not is clear. What we do know is that on the night of September 29th, a 5th member had joined the group of intrepid UFO hunters: Lázaro, the brother of Isabel, and the youngest member of the party.
As it was by now their routine, they all sat on the beach at 8:30, directly in front of the Los Corales bar. The sea was calm and the coast was practically empty, with no boat in sight (we’ll get back to this on part 2). Their approximate distance from their position to the bar was around 300 meters. And they waited.
They didn’t have to wait long. Aside from their old friend, the “red moon,” which had faithfully appeared in its accustomed position, for the first time the witnesses also saw a new development: What looked like a bright white ‘semicircle’ coming from the sea; with the help of their binoculars they could observe, at the center of it, a group of ‘red lights’ forming a sort of triangle. This new UFO silently flew past above their heads, moving toward the town, leaving the group amazed, and excitedly commenting the impressions of the event among themselves.
But then a third, blaring light appeared right over them, seemingly so high or bright they couldn’t discern any sort of shape. The witnesses noticed that when the UFO above them made three consecutive flashes, the red UFO at Roche cape would respond with two, and so on and so forth. A sort of ‘communication’ between these two objects seemed to be taking place, which lasted for around half an hour.
While they were fascinatingly observing this luminous ‘exchange’, something else caught the attention of our young witnesses: At around 9 pm, they noticed two strange figures standing by the beach’s shoreline; their presence raised the alarms of the UFO hunters, not only because of the literally ‘alien’ appearance of the entities –identical in appearance, almost 7 feet tall, covered with white flowing ‘cloaks’ whose ends reached all the way down to the water, and with round, featureless white heads with no hair– but because their arrival had not been detected by the youngsters; almost as if they had suddenly appeared out of nowhere.
Sketch of the ‘cloaked’ figures observed by the witnesses
One of the girls of the group, understandably unnerved by this observation, proposed to the rest of them to leave. Pedro González urged his companions to remain calm, suggesting the two ‘cloaked’ individuals could be some ‘pranksters’; perhaps two of their town neighbors had decided to play a joke on them by –rather lamely– dressing themselves as ‘ghosts’ with white sheets? The idea, however improbable –if nothing else because the tunics of the two beings were so bright they almost looked as if glowing– momentarily swayed the fears of the witnesses, who decided to stay.
But suddenly, the two entities started to move out of the water, towards them. Their gait was awkward and laborious, as if they were unable to bend their knees, and while they walked they kept their arms firmly on each side of their torso. Their long clothes covered their feet, as well as their hands.
The approaching figures finally managed to trigger the fight-or-flight response in all the members of the group. Panicked, they started to run away –in all honesty, could ANYONE blame them?
The group broke down their escape, though, once they realized the beings were not in pursuit of them. Instead, they had stopped and turned on their axis to face the sea, apparently looking in the direction of the ‘red moon’, which had faithfully remained on its fixed position the whole time. The group of witnesses miraculously controlled their nerves, and decided to remain observing the amazing sight from a cautionary distance (approximately some 30 meters or 100 feet away from the figures).
The unfolding of otherworldly events on this fateful night were far from over…
The Transformation
While the two cloaked visitors kept their attention toward the glowing red object in the distance, the young UFO hunters observed something akin to a ‘shooting star’ on the night sky: a small, white-blue light the size of a tennis ball falling toward the beach, yet vanishing or ‘turning off’ just 2 feet or so before crashing over the heads of the entities. As if on cue by the disappearance of the orb, the two humanoids proceeded to seat on the beach, with their backs kept stiffly straight, while at the same time swiftly digging into the sand to build a sort of u-shaped wall surrounding them; once completed, they presently lied on their backs of this makeshift fortress.
In-situ reconstruction of the ‘trench’ built by the beings, in which they laid down
If the purpose of the sand ‘trench’ was to obstruct the sight of the humanoids from uninvited interlopers, it was only partially successful; let’s not forget our original witnesses were still at the scene and quite capable to observe the prostate figures, although with more difficulty. Pedro González was once again forced to calm the nerves of the more jitterish among them, while the rest kept passing on the binoculars to better watch the bizarre spectacle, which proceeded to yet another unexpected act.
Soon after the beings lied down on their backs, they proceeded to pass around them a bright, small sphere of a cyan-blue color –perhaps, we could speculate, the same orb which had fallen down moments before– although this time it seemed as small as a ping-pong ball in the eyes of our young witnesses, who observed this strange ‘ball game’ performed among the humanoids around a half-dozen times or so, until Pedro González –the one who had bravely convinced the rest of the friends to stick around– without any warning tossed the binoculars to the ground and started to flee the scene. The other Pedro (Sánchez) quickly intercepted him to know what was going on, and that’s when the terrified young man informed his friend he had observed a third figure at the scene, at the foot of the other two entities. This new humanoid was considerably taller (around ten foot, according to their testimony), clad on a dark, tight-fitting suit and displaying an enormous pear-shaped head. The two young men decided not to tell the rest about the ‘giant’ and returned to their friends, but when Pedro González took the binoculars, he could not longer find the enormous humanoid near the two others, who still remained lying on their backs and passing the little blue sphere back and forth between each other.
The strangest act in this alien stage play the young men and women had been observing, was about to commence.
Suddenly the little blue light disappeared, and a few seconds later the two beings got up from the sand. To the amazement of our witnesses, though, they no longer retained their original appearance: The white, cloaked figures had somehow changed into what looked like a human couple! The male was tall (around 7 feet, which was the original height of the white beings) had long blond hair and was wearing dark jeans and a checkered shirt; the woman was slightly shorter than the man, her hair was also long but dark in color, and wore a thin blouse and long skirt.
Without saying any word, they turned and started walking toward the town, one in front of the other, without even bothering to ever once look at the startled group of youngsters who had bore witness to their entire transformation; a transformation, it should be pointed out, that for some reason wasn’t 100% perfect: The witnesses later revealed to the researchers who went to Conil to investigate the case, that although the features of the ‘female changeling’ were very beautiful and perfectly ordinary, the forehead of his male companion on the other hand was abnormally prominent. How could someone looking like an extra in a cheesy sci-fi flick could go around unnoticed in a tourist town??
Exeter, the extraterrestrial leader in the B-movie This Island Earth (1955). Did the Conil male ‘infiltrator’ look like this?
The Giant
Just when they were about to reach one of the Conil’s dark alleys, the witnesses’ attention was shifted once again toward the beach, where they could see above the water a small, white cloud coming from the coast toward them at great speed. When the compact ‘cloud’ reached the shore it stopped and rapidly evaporated, and at that moment is when Loli –who was using the binoculars– alerted her friends about the presence of a dark figure near the water. Pedro González snatched the field glasses out of the girl’s hand, and confirmed it was indeed the same enormous being he had seen before.
The black giant with the pear-shaped head stood motionless in front of the young, baffled witnesses, until it quickly moved rapidly away toward the west. As if this wasn’t already strange enough, the humanoid –according to the witnesses– wasn’t even ‘touching’ the ground! Rather, its feet hovered some 8 inches above the sand, and as it floated away its arms were kept firmly on each side of its torso.
The being’s departure elicited a strange response among the members of the UFO party: The oldest and the youngest in the group –Pedro G. and Lázaro– suddenly started to run in pursuit of the giant. Asked later why they reacted in such a way, they couldn’t give a proper explanation; their chase turned out fruitless though, since no matter how hard they ran, the giant moved (or ‘floated’) even faster. When the two were about 50 or 60 meters away from the being, they finally heeded the desperate shouts of their companions pleading them to stop, which they did.
Sketch of the black-suited ‘giant’ observed by the witnesses
It was at that moment when the giant also stopped moving and turned its head toward Pedro and Lázaro. Its black eyes, huge as hen eggs, robbed the two of whatever courage they still possessed, and even though the being’s attitude was not menacing, it somehow gave the impression to the young men that it was warning them not to follow any further. At last they returned to their frantic friends and let the giant lose itself in the night.
With the couple nowhere to be seen, and the giant gone –was its purpose just to deviate the witnesses’ attention and prevent them not to chase the other beings?– the incredible events of the night were apparently over… or so they seemed.
The Aftermath
Graphic explaining the location of the sand trench in relation to the witnesses’ viewing position. It also shows the distance between the beach shore and the town
As the group of young men and women remained at the beach, excitedly commenting among themselves on what had just transpired at that humble location of the Cádiz province, they were able to witness one last unknown phenomenon around 10 pm: By the coast and heading from west to east, a small white light followed a silent, zigzagging trajectory, like a bouncing ball in one of those old sing-along children TV shows. A rather unimpressive finale, judging by the sort of spectacle preceding it.
Shortly after, an additional witness appeared on the beach and joined the group. Juan Bermúdez was an adult town resident –possibly related to Loli, one of the girls– correspondent for a local radio station as well as a painter; he had heard of his young neighbors’ nightly escapades at the Bateles beach, and as he had done on previous occasions decided to go there and see if anything interesting occurred –in a later interrogation with UFO investigator Bruno Cardeñosa, Bermúdez confessed he himself had actually had the chance to observe the giant humanoid on 3 previous separate occasions, during the first hour of dawn; if true, that would mean the Bateles beach had been the scene of extreme high strangeness even before the night of September 29th.
When the boys and girls told him what had happened, Bermúdez helped them investigate the area where the two cloaked humanoids had accomplished their incredible transformation. The group noticed the ‘trench’ the beings had built –which was approximately 2 meters wide by 1 meter long– showed discernible ‘scratch marks’ on the sand, as if it had been done by long and slender fingers.
Reconstruction of the footprints left by the couple, compared with the size of an ordinary foot
But was even more interesting were the ‘footprints’ the beings had left on the beach as they made their escape toward the town. They were enormous: 18 inches long and 6 inches in their widest part, with a very prominent arc as well as a huge toe impression that seemed to go deeper than the rest of the foot. Which raises the question: When the young witnesses saw the ‘transmogrified’ alien couple walk out of the beach, why didn’t they notice such abnormal feet?
…Unless the image of the human couple wearing ordinary clothes was just an elaborate illusion, one that was nevertheless unable to conceal their actual imprints left in the sand? This might serve to explain why both set of footprints had exactly the same size, despite the fact the female walk-in was not as tall as her 7-foot companion.
Adding to the confusion was the fact the group also found many more footprints than they expected. Aside from the ones going from the ‘sand trench’ to the Conil, an action observed by the witnesses, 20 paces away from the trench there were imprints of the same size and characteristics, but going in several different directions and covering an area of approximately 10 feet in diameter. What’s confusing about this is the fact the 4 boys and girls NEVER observed the couple deviate from their straight line toward the town alley, so they couldn’t had the time to leave all those additional prints.
But if they didn’t do it, then who did?
Local newspaper running an article about the Conil encounter (October 5th, 1989)
The fantastic Conil encounter with what seemed to be shape-shifting humanoids took little time to garner attention from the local media. First through the radio station Juan Bermúdez worked for, and then via an article published by El Diario de Cádiz on October the 5th. On the second part on my retelling of this wonderful episode, we will explore what else transpired after debunkers attempted to shoot down the case. But far more interestingly, we will discover what happened after the enigmatic couple of alien infiltrators returned to the ‘scene of the crime’.
Greetings, fellow Coppertops! We continue with the chronicling of the Conil close encounter, when a group of 5 local kids witnessed all sorts of otherworldly phenomena at a beach in the coast of Cádiz, which included red-glowing UFOs, orbs of light, a 10-foot-tall levitating giant, and (last but not least) two cloaked entities who transformed themselves into a human-looking couple right in front of them. So strap in, because the high strangeness surrounding this remarkable case is far from over!
The Debunking
As we briefly mentioned by the end of part 1, it only took a few days until the incidents occurring on the night of September 29th, 1989 became a matter of public knowledge. After El Diario de Cádiz ran a story about the case on October 5th, members of the Spanish Group of UFO Investigations (GEIFO in the Spanish acronym), a skeptically-oriented organization, visited Conil de la Frontera to conduct a field research and interview the witnesses; they asked the same local newspaper to publish their findings, which it did on October 16th.
Cover of El Diario de Cádiz from October 16th, 1989, running the debunking explanation by the GEIFO group
The conclusion by GEIFO’s researchers? The whole episode had been nothing but a big misidentification caused by over-excited imagination. The red UFO observed by the group of local boys and girls for the past couple of weeks —“as big as the moon” according to their testimony– had actually been a British ship in charge of laying down underwater cable for the Telefónica phone company in that area, which was near the coast of Conil during the night in question according to their findings, and used ‘light signals’ to coordinate the work with ground personnel. The ‘aliens’, according to the skeptics, were two crew members of said vessel wearing scuba-diving equipment and covering themselves with blankets or towels, and the ‘white cloud’ they had observed coming down from the sea, was nothing but the wake left by a Zodiac boat they divers had used to reach the beach. Case closed, Scooby Doo!
“But wait!” you may be asking, “what about the trench the ‘divers’ dug out in the sand? What about the blue light they passed around each other while they were lying down on it? What about the TEN-FOOT-TALL GIANT which appeared after the couple walked to the town (leaving their ‘towels’ AND all their equipment behind?)?”
GEIFO’s answers to all these questions –and the way they left other questions unanswered– seem to be more incredible than the testimony of the witnesses itself: The trench was built by the divers because they wanted to ‘remove their gear in privacy’ –you know, instead of doing it much more easily onboard the British ship or the Zodiac?– or maybe because after a hard night’s work laying out cable, they wanted to spend a few hours under the Cádiz’s fair weather doing *ahem* ‘other things’ *wink wink*. The ‘orb’ they had on their hands was a mere torchlight, and the black-suited giant was another diver, possibly in charge to pilot the Zodiac boat (!)
So, in the eyes of the ‘scientifically-oriented’ investigators –the ones who think any sort of explanation, no matter how tenuous or downright improbable, is always better than entertaining the possibility of a truly anomalous event– the 5 Conil witnesses rather than being UFO hoaxers seeking publicity, were just a bunch of gullible idiots. I’ll leave you Coppertops to decide which is more insulting…
The Counter-Debunking
Juan José Benítez: Reporter, UFO investigator, author and globetrotter
5 months after GEIFO’s report had ‘satisfactorily’ solved the case –and quite possibly subjected the 5 witnesses to all sorts of ridicule in the process– investigator Juan José Benítez visited Conil to make a research of his own. Benítez is one of the most famous UFO hunters in Spain and has been instrumental in coaxing his government to declassify a good number of cases which were investigated by the Spanish Air Force. He has also traveled thousands of miles all across the globe to conduct field investigations and interview hundreds of witnesses, most of them humble townsfolk living in remote villages, who had never shared their testimony outside their circle of friends and family. He is a bestselling author not only in his home country but in all of Latin America, and it was in 1990 when he described his involvement on the Conil case in his book La Quinta Columna.
Benítez’s approach to put GEIFO’s theory to the test was simple and straightforward: The skeptics’ main argument was that the UFO observed by the witnesses had been one of two British vessels laying down underwater cable –this despite the boys’ insistence that during the night in question there was NO ship or boat on sight.
Benítez did corroborate the existence of two oceanographic ships, the British Enterprise Two and the C.S. Monarch, which had been hired by a Spanish subcontractor to conduct work for the Telefónica phone company. According to GEIFO, the Monarch had been the one near the coast on the night of September 29th; yet their first mistake was in stating the ship was laying down the cable, whereas in fact they were conducting preliminary prospecting of the littoral.
It took some hard work, but in the end Benítez managed to uncover 3 important pieces of the puzzle:
When the Monarch started working in the area (September 18) its position was 60 miles away from the coast, which was too far to have been able to be spotted from the beach (not to mention the witnesses started to observe the red UFO on the night of September 14th).
On the night of September 29th the meteorological report indicated the weather conditions were inadequate for any medium-to-large ship to even approach the coast, due to the strong winds winds mixed with the low tide and the littoral currents.
But the coup’ de grace came when Benítez was able to contact captain, J. A. B. Simkins –Chairman and Chief Executive of BT Marine, the oceanographic fleet which owned the Monarch– who on July of 1990 wrote him a letter stating the approximate position of their vessel during the night in question (36º 23′ N, 06º 44′ W), placing it 30 miles away from the Bateles beach. Consider how during the best viewing conditions, the horizon line on the sea only extends 8 miles.
And if that is not enough, here’s a link to Benítez’s own web page describing the Conil case, where if you scroll down you can find a scanned copy of Simkins’ letter. In it one can read the final nail in GEIFO’s coffin:
“[During our operation] (W)e would not have employed frogmen.”
Check. And mate.
As an aside note, Benítez also managed to discover (according to an article written by Bruno Cardeñosa published by the magazine Año Cero in 1996) that around the time of the incidents two individuals bearing the characteristics of the ‘changeling’ couple were lodging on a small guest house in Conil around the days of the encounter; these ‘tourists’ registered themselves using the passports of German citizens who, supposedly, hadn’t abandoned their country in those days –unfortunately, La Quinta Columna doesn’t mention this detail, nor can further information be found in Benítez’s website.
But wait, there’s more! Benítez also uncovered another interesting part to this mystery: On the nights from Sept 27th to Sept 30th, the military radar station located in Algeciras (Cádiz) suffered an inexplicable malfunction, which rendered the whole Conil area ‘dark’ during the period in which the alleged UFO activity and close encounter took place. Coincidence, or did someone (or something) was trying to avoid detection?
Benítez’s detective job showed GEIFO’s main argument failed to convincingly explain the events that took place at Conil. But although it proved the UFO was not a British oceanographic ship, and the humanoids were not British scuba divers, it can’t unfortunately substantiate the testimony of the witnesses and what they claimed they saw.
Corroboration to their fantastic story did take place, though; albeit indirectly and in the typical inconclusive manner in which the phenomenon tends to conduct itself…
The Return
How many UFO hunters, I wonder, feel as if they are doomed to always remain 2 steps behind their ‘prey’? Always trying to document cases, interview witnesses and collect whatever evidence remains AFTER the objects and their occupants take off or leave the area; but never having the chance, just for once, of actually be able to witness the high strangeness with their own eyes.
Well, for local UFO hunter Jesús Borrego López that was about to change when he decided to travel to Conil in search for more answers on October 15th. A police officer of 44 years old assigned to the Security and Control office of the Cádiz town hall, Borrego López easily managed to locate four of the witnesses (Loli, Isabel and the two Pedros) who politely accepted to answer his questions.
Once they finished talking at one of the witnesses’ home, the researcher asked them to accompany him to the Bateles beach, which they accepted even though it was already late at night. Once Borrego López was satisfied with his field survey, he invited the group of boys and girls to a local bar for a refreshment, where they remained lively discussing the incident.
It was around 10:35 pm when the group instantly fell silent, because they had all taken notice of a strange couple crossing in front of them toward the sea. Borrego López was the first to say “have you noticed the forehead of that man?”
The youngsters said nothing and kept looking at the odd individual and each other in total amazement. Borrego López insisted: “look at his height! He measures 2 meters tall, easily!”
The boys finally dared to open their mouth, confirming that was indeed the same ‘man’ and ‘woman’ they had observed leaving the Bateles beach after their ‘transformation’ inside the ‘sand trench’.
The male with the prominent cranium was walking 2 steps ahead of his female partner. Like the witnesses had described in their original testimony, he had long blond hair reaching up to his shoulders, and was wearing a denim attire which looked somewhat worn out and tightly fit. The woman was way above regular height (1.90 meters) and wore similar clothes as her less-conspicuous companion.
Borrego López and Pedro Sánchez quickly got up the table and left two of the witnesses behind, with the clear intention of intersecting the couple who were ahead of them by at least 150 meters.
“Visibility was perfect,” Borrego López reported later to Benítez, “despite the fact the streetlights at the marine promenade were turned off (according to town hall’s regulations). But the night was very clear. There was a full moon and also low clouds reflecting the town’s illumination and lunar light over the sea.”
La Quinta Columna (The Fifth Column). The book where Benítez narrates (among many other encounter reports) the events surrounding the Conil case
Yet despite these optimal viewing conditions, and the fact the two UFO hunter and his young sidekick were keeping pace with the odd couple, the individuals suddenly vanished in front of Borrego López and Pedro’s very eyes. Bewildered, the two chasers looked in all directions, but their pursuants were nowhere to be found.
The unexpected disappearance raised goosebumps on both Pedro and the seasoned researcher, who had now become another witness of this incredible case. But the surprises were not over: When they both looked toward the east they noticed what looked like a ‘black dot’ the size of a soccer ball approaching rapidly from the sea shore.
Meanwhile the two other kids they had left at the bar joined them in time to observe the dark ‘ball’ which kept moving toward them at a preternatural speed. As it got nearer, the witnesses saw how its shape started to change; its trajectory became more erratic, at times looking as if it was floating above the ground, and at others as if it was being ‘yanked’ or ‘dragged’ by an invisible force.
The group continued to observe the mesmerizing vision, until they finally realized the incoming dark mass was actually a human figure; though its legs were moving so fast they were a mere blur.
When the ‘sprinter’ was just 60 meters away from the witnesses, it stopped. It was a woman! She was standing in front of the group very close to the water age, and without any warning she removed the upper portion of her clothes to reveal her female curves, and started walking toward the Roche cape, faraway in the west. And when she had put some distance between herself and the astonished group, these observed yet another figure who joined her and watched the two individuals lose themselves in the night.
According to their later calculations given the apparent size of the figure from their position, the strange female had managed to traverse a distance of 4 kilometers in around 45 seconds; something impossible to achieve even with a land vehicle. Not to mention the woman didn’t raise a tremendous wake of sand while racing through the beach, nor even make any discernible noise.
Had that been the same man and woman Borrego López and Pedro had tried to pursue? Or were they an additional element to this absurd stage play, intended to distract the witnesses the same way the ten-foot-tall giant had done on the night of September 29th, when it showed itself floating inches above the ground while the couple of changelings were making their move toward the anonymity of the Conil streets?
Whatever the case, the only thing Borrego López could do was analyze the footprints left by the (original) couple before they vanished. While the tracks made by the woman were very light and faintly discernible, the man’s were very profound; so much so that Borrego López estimated the individual had to weigh more than 100 kilograms. The size and shape were consistent with the ones found by the youngsters on the night of the 29th, not only in their unusual shape and monstrous size, but also due to the fact the researcher found tracks hinting how whomever made them, had been apparently making strange swirls as if going in circles –movements unobserved by neither Borrego López nor Pedro, the same way the original witnesses had watched the couple walk straight toward the town, yet they later found a great number of large footprints going in different directions.
After the ‘circles´, only one set of footprints was detectable… and it went straight into the water.
It was close to midnight when Borrego López confirmed there were no more tracks to be found in a 100-meter radius, and with that he was ready to call it a night. While he was advising his young acquaintances not to reveal to anyone what had transpired that night, Pedro suddenly yelled “here they come!”. Sure enough, the enigmatic couple was making yet another uncalled-for appearance right in front of the witnesses. One of the boys was (finally!) carrying a super-8 film camera and began recording the seemingly hurried movements of the couple as they passed by.
The man looked straight into Borrego López’s with cold, unfriendly eyes. His face was very pale. The woman on the other hand was stunningly beautiful, and she seemed to have somewhat oriental features, with her eyes slanted slightly at the edges and glimpsing at the gathering of witnesses with an expression of animosity or nervousness. The seasoned UFO hunter noticed both their clothes were completely dry, which ran counter to the evidence of the tracks heading into the sea.
The witnesses never dared to address the couple. They just kept staring at them until, for the second time, they reached the streets of Conil and were lost out of sight. They didn’t return that night, nor any other subsequent night.
When they revealed the Super-8 film, nothing appeared on screen. ‘Convenient’ would say the hardcore skeptic; ‘customary’ would reply the experienced Fortean, who knows fully well these sort of things happen all the time.
The Epilogue
Our tale has basically come to an end, which doesn’t mean the UFO activity in the area fully ceased; Benítez reveals other interesting incidents near Conil during that time of 1989 in his book La Quinta Columna –including the observation of another giant being by a local artisan on the morning on September 22nd. Further confirming the supposition made by few people in the UFO field –including yours truly– that high strangeness events almost never happen in isolation; rather, it seems the ‘energy’ conducing to these manifestations slowly increases, until a final dramatic ‘crisis’ unfolds.
And if someone needs further confirmation that the year 1989 was exceptionally ‘charged’ with high strangeness, we but need to remind our dear Coppertops of another remarkable close encounter report, which happened just two days before the Conil case: I’m talking of course about the landing in the Russian city of Voronezh, where children and other witnesses interacted with giant humanoids and robotic entities.
Which begs the question: Why does the phenomenon chooses to manifest so prominently in places like Voronezh, or in Conil de la Frontera?
The Conclusion
In the comic book world, the Marvels mini-series created by Kurt Busiek and Alex Ross holds a prominent place because it managed to show all the familiar stories of the Marvel super-heroes from a fresh new perspective: That of the human bystanders, who are forced to observe their actions and epic battles of these god-like beings from a safe distance, not fully understanding their motives or even what’s really going on.
When I think of the Conil case, I feel it is a similar situation. Because this amazing story is far more suggestive by what it doesn’t reveal, than by what it actually does. The testimony of the main witnesses feels like broken pieces of a larger puzzle, hinting to a bigger tapestry of events that took place covertly in that placid beach town of Cádiz, which we will probably never fully understand.
Comparing Conil with a comic book story may look like a cheap literary trick on my behalf, yet it you think about it there are MANY aspects of this close encounter that seem almost plucked out of a pulp novel or a Sci-Fi B-movie. Forget about the grotesque appearance of the male ‘changeling’, which we already equated to that of the extraterrestrial invaders in This Island Earth (1955) or how the ten-foot-tall giant is slightly reminiscent of Gort in the classic The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) –at least in the sense of how it seems to serve as a ‘protector’ of the couple, by distracting the attention of the witnesses away from them. Consider also how there’s this strong link between the humanoids’ ability to transform themselves into a human form, and the ability of the extraterrestrial visitor portrayed by Jeff Bridges in the 1984 movie Starman to do the same thing –and do you remember the main form of ‘technology’ shown by this alien? That’s right: small metallic spheres which glowed with a blue light. Sound familiar?
Make no mistake, my dear Coppertops: Those who read the previous paragraph as an attempt to shoot down the case on my part, should do well to grab a copy of Jeffrey Kripal’s book Mutants & Mystics. Kripal is a scholar of comparative religious studies at Rice University, and rather than being skeptic on the subject of UFOs and paranormal phenomena –his last book was co-authored with Whitley Strieber– he points out there’s an undeniable ‘cross-pollination’ between these type of events and the pop culture we consume in our literature, television and films; to the point that trying to play ‘chicken-and-the-egg’ between fantasy tales and paranormal cases becomes a rather tricky proposition…
Because the truth of the matter is that stories of paranormal agencies infiltrating our world in human guise have existed way before the existence of Sci-Fi movies, or even cinematography. In fact, such folklore goes back centuries –if not millennia– into the dawn of Time. Oxford scholar W.Y. Evans-Wentz managed to gather the remnants of the belief in the Fey folk in his seminal book The Fairy Faith in Celtic Countries (1911), and talked to a lot of honest, hard-working country folk who still believed –or had actually interacted– with these elusive beings who from time to time chose to meddle in the affairs of men:
“They are able to appear in different forms. One once appeared to me, and seemed only four feet high, and stoutly built. He said “I am bigger than I appear to you know. We can make the old young, the big small, the small big.”
The Celtic peasants also believed lakes and bodies of water acted as ‘bridges’ or conduits in which the transmutation from the human to the fairy state took place. But if that is the case… couldn’t the OPPOSITE be also possible? Could water be a medium by which liminal beings could get entrance into our world? Both Evans-Wentz and Guillermo Del Toro would probably concur…
When you boil them down to their bare essence, and you stop the bickering caused by either trying to validate or debunk a given case, the true main difference between fictional stories and factual close encounters is that Fiction HAS TO MAKE SENSE. A novel or movie plot needs to have a core of consistency in order to make all the elements fall into place.
Finding sense in the events that took place in Conil on the night of September 29th is practically impossible: If what Juan José Benítez reveals in La Quinta Columna concerning the military radar station which remained inoperable during those days is true, then it would hint the beings making their appearance at the Bateles Beach wanted to perform their infiltration activities covertly, away from the eyes of the Spanish government; yet if that is the case, then WHY choose a tourist town, instead of a more remote location? WHY suffer the presence of pesky human interlopers near them? WHY was Pedro González the only one in the group who could see the giant at first? WHY perform their shape-shifting spectacle lying down on a beach, instead of the safety of their own ‘craft’ (if that is what the ‘red moon’ observed by the witnesses was)? WHY the imperfect transformation, which still rendered the male with such abnormal-looking facial features? WHY the incapacity to cover the unusual shape and size of their tracks?
…And WHY O WHY the need to reappear in front of the witnesses not once, but twice??
These are just a few of the open questions left by the Conil case. How one chooses to approach them tells more about one’s personal opinion about the UFO phenomenon, than about what really happened on that fateful night. In a polarizing world demanding to view things as either ‘black’ or ‘white’, I personally feel this case was always meant to remain ‘gray’. I consider the actions allegedly performed by the entities manifesting at Conil de la Frontera as *deliberately* absurd; like a well-crafted act enacted for the benefit of the young witnesses, who also had a part to perform in this play, even if they didn’t know it or were capable or comprehend it. The high strangeness of this encounter is both equally suggestive of non-human intervention, while at the same time being sufficiently devoid of enough concrete evidence so that almost 30 years after the story broke, it sadly remains scarcely known outside the Spanish-speaking UFO community.
“We want you to believe in us,” said one of the UFOnauts who abducted patrolman Herbert Schirmer in 1967, “… but not too much.” If the tall blond who left those inhuman footprints on the Bateles beach had ever opened his mouth and talked to the witnesses, he might have said similar words. Just as it was in 1989, his cold eyes remain an open question hinting at answers that could be not just incomprehensible… but also deeply unsettling.
A man who claims he was abducted by aliens – and has a metal implant in his leg – has explained what actually happens when people wake up with unexplained ‘gaps’ in time.
Chris Augustin claims that he knows that time had passed in an instant – because he suddenly ‘came to’ behind the wheel of his car.
Chris Augustin, ‘Three minutes and 40 seconds took place inside my car. I felt like I’d come aware from something – like a daze.’
‘My hands are on the wheel, executing a turn – and then three-and-a-half minutes are gone. I was afraid, afraid of what I didn’t understand.
In a wide-ranging speech at a UFO conference in late January, Augustin claims that years later, he started to wake up with blood on his sheets – and that aliens implanted a metal object in his leg.
Nigel Watson, author of the UFO Investigations Manual said, ‘‘American ufologist and artist Budd Hopkins categorised many of the prime elements of the abduction experience. He discovered that UFO witnesses, with no inclination of an abduction experience, often cannot account for a missing period, ranging from minutes to hours.
(Picture: Youtube)
‘Abductions often start in childhood, continue throughout a person’s life, and are not just isolated incidents. Abductees regularly find mysterious scars on their body; they are often confused and worried by dreams or nightmares that they have had since childhood. Under hypnosis they remember being inside a flying saucer.
‘Typical memories recall medical procedures that include the taking of sperm or ova. At times, the experience amounts to a form of ritualized rape. From his study of hundreds of reports, Hopkins believes that aliens are abducting people to create human/alien hybrids.
‘As might be expected, such ideas have attracted the attention of both sceptics and believers. Sceptics regard the abduction researchers and abductees as gullible fools who do not know the difference between fact and fantasy. The believers regard the abductees as tortured victims who need understanding and help after the trauma of alien encounters.’
There have been a number of recent “flying saucer” sightings that don’t necessarily fit the category of UFOs since they were seen on the ground. However, they stirred up talk of spacecrafts, aliens and all the usual speculation on what these saucer-shaped UGOs (unidentified grounded objects) might be. Here’s an update on three of them.
The Internet went crazy this week over Google Earth images of NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California, where an object that looked suspiciously like a flying saucer was seen on the runway and in the nearby grass. Since the images dated back to 2014, it was unlikely NASA was hiding a flying saucer out in the open for everyone with access to Google Earth to see.
Sure enough, a NASA engineer from JPL showed he had the right stuff by debunking the rumors with a selfie posted on Twitter of himself, a fellow engineer and the mysterious object – which is actually a … well, Dr. Nacer Chahat doesn’t really say what it is but instead makes a wonderful observation based on current U.S. events:
Here is what you think is a UFO. The only alien is me.
Most speculation now centers on the object being a storage container or the cover of some kind of underground bunker. What’s inside? That’s a mystery for another day.
Next up is the flying saucer sighting in Antarctica using … you guessed it … Google Earth: The Saucer-Seeker’s Friend (trademark pending). Images of what appears to be a round disc sticking out from under a rock ledge also made the rounds this week on the web. One of the theories proposed was that it was actually a pond made from melting glacier ice which was distorted because those satellites are just so darned high. Sure enough, if you pull back on that Google image and look around, you see other ponds that didn’t go viral because they suffer from an ailment known as “not round like a saucer.”
Finally, yet another “OMG! It was right there out in the open on the freeway!” saucer sighting came from somewhere on I-74 in Central Illinois where a truck was spotted hauling a large saucer-shaped object. For those who want to believe but don’t want to get fooled again, the saucer was quickly identified as part of an X-47B. Well, that explains it.
What? You don’t know what an X-47B is? That’s Grumman’s experimental fighter-sized unmanned drone designed to take off and land on aircraft carriers and refuel in the air. It’s scheduled to be deployed in 2019 but you may see one flying around Area 51 or on the road in Illinois.
There is an unusual theme that has remained present in certain modern UFO circles over the years. Granted, the UFO subject is rather “odd” in itself, without the inclusion of supplemental weirdness to further complicate an already complex subject. But add to it the running theme that certain UFO researchers have actually been killed in pursuit of the mystery, and it brings a different air to the phenomenon entirely.
Such circumstances have appeared as recently as last year, when the Telegraph and a number of other outlets reported the death of conspiracy researcher Max Spiers. “This is really strange. It does seem that UFO researchers are now being targeted, probably to slow the rate of information being leaked to the public,” said researcher Scott C. Waring, who offered little in the way of evidence for the claim that UFO researchers were being targeted, let alone who might be doing the targeting. In contrast to this, Former Ministry of Defense UFO investigator Nick Pope countered Waring’s statements in a tweet, saying that, “The death of Max Spiers was a tragedy, but having run the UK Government’s UFO project I promise we don’t go around killing UFO researchers.”
Among the other suggested “casualties” that have appeared over the years have been Edward Ruppelt, the first director of the USAF’s Project Blue Book, who died at just 37-years of age. Others include researchers Morris K. Jessup, Charles Hall, and pilot Fredrick Valentich, whose disappearance over Australia’s Bass Strait in 1978 is perhaps the most legitimately strange of those listed here.
However, perhaps no UFO-related death had been so often recounted as that of Captain Thomas F. Mantell of the Kentucky Air National Guard, who died while pursuing a UFO in a P-51 Mustang on January 7, 1948.
The essential facts about the case are as follows: shortly after a large, flying object was reported by observers near Godman Field at Fort Knox, a group of pilots already in the air were advised to try and locate and pursue the mystery craft. Mantell was the first to spot the object, and after stating his intention to move in closer and engage the craft, he ascended to an unsafe altitude above 25,000 feet, and blacked out (only one of the four Mustangs in Mantell’s group contained an oxygen mask). Mantell’s aircraft subsequently went spiraling to the ground, resulting in a fatal crash that would send a shock wave throughout the early UFO community.
Even Edward Ruppelt believed the object Mantell was chasing had been conclusively explained as having been an experimental Skyhook balloon. However, a number of UFO books and articles over the years have expressed skepticism about the identity of the “balloon”, arguing that Mantell was killed while chasing a bonafide unidentified flying object. Putting that long-held dispute aside, the Mantell incident is of significance for other reasons; namely due to the fact that, as Ruppelt and others would argue, widely-publicized incidents like the Mantell crash and the “Gorman dogfight” that occurred over Fargo, North Dakota later that same year, each played a significant role in shaping public opinion on the UFO subject for decades to come.
Altogether, Ruppelt seemed to recognize the kind of fear brewing in the American public following situations like the Mantell incident. In his view, it was largely unwarranted, of course, having been based on the mistaken notion that it had been a “saucer” Mantell was chasing in the first place, and the subsequent judgement that his active pursuit led to his death. Hence, for those who looked no further than to read, “man killed while pursuing saucer,” how else were they to interpret the situation?
At times, to be one who studies the enduring UFO enigma seems to require being able to balance the study of valid objects of mysterious origin in the skies, with a knowledge of sociology, psychology, and human perception. In other words, when it comes to the study of UFOs, things are very seldom as they seem, and almost never as they are later reported in written accounts.
This is not to say, of course, that there is nothing worthy of study at all; however, the repeated retelling of “classics” like the Mantell incident, and in such a way that it implies conspiracies when, in fact, little evidence exists which actually points to such conclusions, does little to help the cause.
Sometimes, we have to accept what facts we are given, and whatever conclusions they lead to… regardless of how disappointing or unsensational they may be. Sensationalism sells, but the facts are what lead at the end of the day; only then can we begin to glean any “truth” that may be willing to present itself.
Devon county in England has been a hotbed of UFO activity. The sighting a few days ago only lends more fuel to the fire. Why do the people who live in Devon see so many strange objects in the sky?
Ever since the 12th century, when religious pilgrims reported seeing a glowing dragon emerge from the sea and disappear into the sky, the entire southwest of England has had many a strange sighting. The most recent sighting occurred only a few days ago, when Mark Emmins, a musician, spotted the object over the town of Exmouth. He wrote on his Facebook page,
It stood still in the sky for some hours and then decided to move and then vanish. We got photos too.
The photographs were taken by Tyron Osborne, a friend of Emmins. They noted that the object hovered for several hours until it eventually moved eastward out of sight.
In July of 2016, John Mooner spotted a strange orange object hovering over his town of Newton Abbot. He grabbed his Nikon camera, and snapped several images. John Mooner stated in an interview with The Plymouth Herald,
The object was definitely not any type of known aircraft. The object was glowing bright orange and had a white pulsing light on the top left side. The object was large and just hung there silently over the housing estate it gave me the creeps.
I believe I have seen the same thing. On hearing the sound of a helicopter I looked out to see if it was another police chopper. I am a serving soldier and I can say I’ve never seen anything move in the way these objects were.
Perhaps one of the most famous cases out of the Devon area occurred in 1967. Known as the Devon Flying Cross UFO, the case made headlines around the globe. Two police constables Roger Willey and Clifford Waycott, chased a strange cross shaped UFO in their police car in the early hours of October 24th. Constable Willey told the press at the time,
It was travelling about tree-top height over wooded countryside near Holsworthy, Devon. We drove towards it and it moved away. It then led us on a chase as if it was playing a game with us.
Front page of The Times in 1967
The Flying Cross Incident led to multiple other sightings of a similar object throughout Devon during that year. In fact, the year of 1967 was a major UFO flap year, with UFO sightings occurring all over the planet. A few interesting cases of that year are the Shag Harbour UFO Crash, the Falcon Lake UFO Encounter, and the Malmstrom Air Force Base UFO Incident. Whether these strange objects are drawn to the area, or there is simply something wrong with the drinking water, Devon is definitely well known for its history with UFOs. If you are ever near the area, it’s best to look up once in awhile. You may just catch of glimpse of something odd.

What Are Good Reasons For The Government To Hide Proof Of Alien Contact?
What Are Good Reasons For The Government To Hide Proof Of Alien Contact?
I am going to try and deal with some potentially realistic scenarios. Keep in mind the government plans for the worst case scenario but hopes for the best. So these describe the worst case scenarios of the public finding out. Any worst case scenario that is impossible to tame or deal with would indicate it might be best to keep the info hidden until they need to tell us.
High tech: Is this really a 'TR3B craft' with three glowing engines?
Spaced out: This snap was taken during the Apollo 17 mission
Also, we should remember any species that is capable of surviving for the hundreds of years it would take to get here under less than light speed or any species capable of faster than light travel would also be hundreds and hundreds of years more advanced than us. Both long distance slow travel and faster than light travel are so incredibly difficult that it would far exceed our science. So much so that their technology would seem almost like magic to us. It would be like showing someone from the middle ages tv’s, jet planes and open heart surgery. They might have active nanotech, the ability to manipulate gravitons, antimatter, and magnetic monopoles or some other exotic technologies we haven’t even dreamed of yet.
To be very clear: These are hypothetical scenarios based on the question. Personally, I know of no evidence that leads any direct credence to any of these. While each might be possible there is no known evidence of any of these scenarios.
Aliens are suspected to have visited but only a very long time ago and there is no evidence of hostility. It would not make sense to get the public up in arms over something that happened hundreds or thousands of years ago. Such a revelation would create a host of issues from religious to political as well as boldening fringe groups, militants, and wackos. Why create alarm if it was so long ago, there is no evidence they are harmful and we don’t even know if they would come back?
Aliens visited but only a few times and there is either no evidence of hostility or not enough to make a determination of if they are potentially friend or foe. In this scenario, the aliens might be peaceful or might not but if you get the whole world and the internet talking about it. You will eventually have high profile and visible people making stupid or dangerous statements that could be misinterpreted by the aliens. Our movies are bad enough in how we depict aliens but if we have talking heads talking about how we need to put killer satellites in space to defend against what may in fact be peaceful aliens we risk creating a more tense situation than is necessary. When the aliens do return they will see us going crazy over aliens. That is probably not the way the government wants to make first contact.
Aliens have visited us could be hostile and they have technology that we cannot hope to compete with. This is the worst of all possible scenarios. They seem to be potentially hostile and they have weapons that would make it near impossible to beat them in a conflict. Widespread panic would engulf the world including doomsday cults and those that want to worship the aliens.Religious leaders would have to explain how aliens fit into systems that are inherently human biased.Speculation and talk of how to defend or fight such aliens in the media and public would make a potentially bad situation against a superior enemy worse. It might even move them to make a preemptive strike as opposed to accepting some kind of surrender or treaty.
The aliens are friendly, social and responsible. They are working with the government to quietly and slowly acclimate us to the idea of there being aliens without admitting it until we are ready to reduce panic and social unrest.Even if the aliens were good natured they could easily see how exposing themselves to us could disrupt our societies. Thus they would tell the government to deny any existence but they would encourage us to explore the concepts in movies, TV and books and plays. Occasional leaks would happen because such a coverup cannot be perfect but those only help to seed the idea that aliens might exist. In this scenario, they are actually keeping it quiet so they can do a slow and phased exposure to this idea. First they would show life on Mars and other planets in a simple and harmless form and might even fake such results (if these planets are barren) just to get the dialog going. Once we have accepted life can exist on other planets other revelations would come in a very slow pace maybe once every 5 or 10 years such as receiving a strange but brief broadcast signal. Eventually these kinds of events and experiences would ramp up until we get to the point of actually trying to send messages to the aliens. The aliens which might very well already be here would pretend to be sending the messages from very far away and thus replies take 10 or more years. Eventually, they would plan for our first public first contact. Using a scenario like this most of the threats from the above scenarios could be avoided.
We know that they exist but we only know from receiving very distant and very faint communications. In this scenario, the government would want to tread very lightly and take it very slowly. They might not want to communicate back and confirm we are here until they know more about the aliens. There is no evidence the aliens have ever visited us and based on the source of the communications any trip or message would take a very long time to arrive. They would likely want to wait and learn more as well as ramp up our space spending so we can try to have sufficient technology to deal with any political or hostile situations that might arise.
There is evidence of aliens and it points to them either interfering directly with human development or the genetics of all life on our planet. The potential questions and issues surrounding alien-initiated Panspermia are too many to name.It would throw most religions into a tailspin because it would mean life was created by aliens and not by some deity. Many religions would fracture and either declare such evidence to be false and demonic or might even move to start embracing the aliens as gods and worshipping them. Others would leave the churches and yet others might join them seeking some kind of help as they fear the implications of such a revelation. Socially this would mean a great deal of upheaval given the numbers of religious people worldwide.Scientifically it would validate some science and throw others out the window. We would then have to begin looking at how this alien abiogenesis was accomplished and how much of the development of life was altered and how much was from natural evolution. All data on evolution would need to be carefully scrutinized. On top of all of that, the question would be if they are still here or not and how much they have continued to interfere with human development. Are we just a big experiment to them?
No matter how you look at it, although proof of extraterrestrial life in any form especially a sentient form would be both a big boon and a big strife to our society. It would likely be a transformative event on the scale of nuclear bombs. Using nuclear weapons as an example, governments were researching and developing the technology for them for decades and denied any knowledge of their existence until the USA actually dropped the first ones. Such things that shake up a society you do not take lightly. I trust the government would take finding aliens very carefully too.
Much thought has gone into what might be the Potential cultural impact of extraterrestrial contact. These include many additional scenarios to the ones above including loss of identity as a species, being forced to remove weapons of mass destruction, risks from technology we do not yet know how to use, legal issues over personhood and rights of aliens and so much more.
As part of Conspiracy Week at the Photographer’s Gallery, Gordon MacDonald’s latest exhibition takes a look through the archives of Wendelle C Stevens, the pioneering alien researcher who made us question whether we’re really alone in the universe.
Few topics that have consistently divided opinion as much as UFOs. Since we first cast our eyes towards the stars, humans have been fascinated by the idea that something might be staring right back down at us. Whether or not you believe we’ve been physically visited by aliens on planet earth, their invasion into popular culture is evident, and even today they captivate believers and non-believers alike.
For writer and publisher Gordon MacDonald, the question of whether or not UFOs exist is somewhat besides the point. It’s this ‘agnostic approach’ that’s the subject of Divisive Moments, an exhibition Gordon has curated for the Conspiracy Week at The Photographers’ Gallery this month.

The exhibition pulls together the extensive archives of the pioneering Lt. Colonel Wendelle C Stevens, one of the most famous UFO researchers who, after leaving the U.S. Air Force, dedicated his life to the study of extra-terrestrials and UFOs. With Stevens having passed away, the exhibition containing over 400 slides of research and photography offers an unbiased insight into the world of a notorious UFO hunter, a rarity when dealing with conspiracies.

Can you tell about how Divisive Moments came about?
It generated as an exhibition from a proposal I put out about conspiracy and photography; we realised it’s a massive area of research, so I began focusing on UFO photography. I started researching Wendelle C Stevens, who had a massive archive that became orphaned when he died in 2010 and got sold across the internet so I started hunting it down.
How does the exhibition differ from the conventional conversations about UFOs?
Well firstly by it being in a photography gallery. It’s about what these photos mean in our culture. I refuse to discuss whether the photos are real or fake and I would hope the audience would go into it with the same idea; if they were proven either way it would take away all the magic of them. I myself believe that committing to a belief when looking at things like this takes away the enjoyment of it.
From the UFO Photo Archives of Wendelle Stevens Collection of Gordon MacDonald
UFOs hold a special place in the heart of many people, as well as conspiracy theorists – what do you put this down to,
Partly down to their mysterious nature. Wendelle’s photo archives have been orphaned and normally in that case when images lose their research base they’re used by people for other reasons, but when you take UFO photos out of context they’re still the same. I think people want see something that doesn’t necessarily have resonance, they enjoy the mystery behind them. There’s two possibilities; either we’re visited regularly by interstellar craft, or people have decided to make fantastic fiction and project it out into the world. But both of those are amazing for me.
UFO photography is notorious for its low quality, do you feel this enhances their artistic value?
It certainly defines them. But within the exhibition there are both low and high quality images. For me the point is how people view them; you can look at one picture from two different perspectives, it can be the same photograph but people read their beliefs into them. I took a more agnostic view that these photos were simultaneously truth and untruth.

Is the excitement surrounding UFOs as pronounced as it was back in the ’70s?
I think if you’re talking about popular culture there still is that excitement; there’s regularly things about aliens in films and TV, I don’t think it’s new anymore as a subject of fiction which I guess is why it doesn’t feel as vibrant as it did in pop culture.
But, if you look on the internet this is where the conversation has gone. If you look at sites like Gaia, there are constant and massive conversations about aliens, mostly from believers and conspiracy theorists. So I think it’s moved to a more populated but more hidden area.

At least the aliens have embraced the Internet…
Yes, they’ve gone digital! Well, the conversation used to be in a different medium; thousands of Wendelle’s books have been sold and there used to be films about government conspiracies surrounding aliens. But I’m interested in people’s reactions; if you start digging into UFOs, you see the most adamant and forceful people, it’s often akin to religion.

Do you hope the exhibition leaves you asking more questions rather than answering any?
That’s the most important part about art; to make you ask more questions. Exhibitions should leave questions about what they bring to the world, and if someone leaves with an answer I would really like to hear it.

Ten astonishing UFO cases that SHOOK THE WORLD in 2016
THE past 12 months has seen major interest in the UFO subject with developments in some of the world's most notorious cases. The number of alleged sightings continues to grow and interest remains high in some of the most mysterious unresolved cases including Roswell, Rendlesham, and Warminster.
Nigel Watson, author of The UFO Investigations Manual, said: "2016 was a bumper year for UFO sightings, attempts at alien contact and new pieces of evidence to support the view that ‘they’ are visiting us.
"The theories, reports and sightings are intriguing and often startling and virtually unbelievable, yet it is hard to dismiss them all as fabrications or the product of over active imaginations.
"If there are aliens visiting us they are having a good laugh at our bemusement."
In his view, these were the 10 most significant developments of the past 12 months:

The first indication of intelligent life on Earth lies in the geometric regularity of its constructions

Alien Invasion: Just how long would we last?
Alien Invasion: Just how long would we last?
In movies humans fight off alien occupation forces, explode alien ships, and mind-control aliens with the power of love. How on earth can we think that would happen? There are many Hollywood attempts to describe humanities exploits against various alien species as they wage war in a quest for world dominance. Fortunately very few are actually close to how an invasion may actually occur let alone be thwarted. Most couldn’t be further from the truth…
In Falling Skies, Noah Wyle is all set to fight off an alien invasion with the power of being a gosh darn nuisance. It’s actually one of the more realistic takes on a way to stop occupation. What’s unrealistic is the idea that occupation would occur in the first place. They’d just destroy us, and although it wouldn’t be a fun ride, it would make for an interesting few hours of television. Instead, we have to watch good, old-fashioned earthling spunkiness take care of a vastly superior force.
One of the primary ways we stop an alien invasion in movies and television is by finding the alien’s one big weakness. There’s some hinting at that in Falling Skies. “These things can be hit,” a gruff man with a gun says, “And they can be hit hard.” They have a vulnerability. In Skyline — spoiler alert — it was true love. The problem with every such One Big Weakness is the audience starts picking apart why the key was that one weakness and no other.
In Signs it was water, but did it have to be fresh water? Wasn’t it raining anywhere? Snow? And what about the water in the human body? Even though most of the body’s water is suspended in cells, there’s a lot of moisture left over. What happens if the aliens look exactly like us? That’s got enough in that one sentence to be a whole different article on its own…
Sure, we’re all happy to suspend our disbelief – with a crane if we have to – because laser fights and big alien ships are cool and we like to watch them. But any alien force so advanced that it can cross vast reaches of outer space would make short work of us. Remember, we’re not just talking about technological advancement here. Space travel comes with a whole host of chemical, physical and biological challenges that have to be met.
How does this alien race combat bone loss, exposure to cosmic rays, cramped quarters on a ship, and perfectly recycling its waste while on board a spacecraft? If its technology allows it to shorten the voyage, how does it keep all outside contaminants out, and can it use that technology against us? If it’s tech forces it to take long voyages across space, how does it keep its immune system — and those of its offspring — going strong, and could it use that against us? In War of the worlds it took a flu infection to stop a pretty effective invasion, dead in it’s tracks. What’s more disturbing is the fact that there’s more viruses and bacteria on Earth than humans. In fact it could be said that Earth is a microorganism planet first, and a human planet second. Then again, an alien invasion film might simply be a film in which every human on the planet dies within 24 hours, and just as the last person’s eyes are closing in death – they see an alien ship land and an alien creature step out of it to plant a flag in the dirt. We may all be dead before we even know they’re here.
When it comes to actual technology, we don’t even have to consider. Independence Day is and shall remain an object of ridicule for saying that alien ships can be given a virus via a laptop, and that alien ships which can survive a nuclear attack can’t put a shield on the one area of their ships vulnerable to a crop-duster. Any way you slice it, they have interstellar travel and we have iPads. There’s not even a contest.
The biggest problem with most alien films is the assumption that they’d want anything that might keep us alive for even a second. There’s a possibility they’d want slaves, pack animals or meat, but what are the chances we’d be any good to them at all? Life is a light dust of carbon between an nitrogen-oxygen vapor and an iron core. Our biosphere would probably be a nuisance to them. It’s hard to match complex biology. It’s easy and profitable to harvest elements, though, and if they came across space, that very well might be what they were looking for. Perhaps the best, most realistic, movie that could be made about alien contact is the two hellish hours a small band of survivors of the initial strike would last as they saw the planet ripped apart and broken down under them.
The point is, if they don’t want us alive, we won’t be. We can fight and we can hack and we can find weaknesses and we can band together. We can do whatever we’d like. We’d still all be killed.
U.I.P Summary:
If an alien invasion were to take place it would probably be over before we knew it was even happening. The proverbial aliens landing on the white house lawns will probably never happen. My luck after stating that it probably will now but I’m sure any alien race landing there now may not get on with its current resident… Then again… Clint DEFCON 1 Morris

Among the groundbreaking disclosures forwarded by Edward Snowden to humanity, one speaks of the possibility of the inner earth being populated by an advanced civilization that had been monitoring us ever since the beginning.
By some he’s considered a traitor, but some think of him as a hero. Edward Snowden had the courage to reveal secrets that the world deserved to know, and among the relevant facts made public, few are told regarding UFOs and extraterrestrial beings.
According to some documents copied from the CIA, the U.S. government has long known about the existence of highly intelligent species, more advanced than humanity. While we were busy gazing the starts for an otherworldly race of humanoids with their disc-shaped UFOs, they were in fact under our very noses, probably for millions of years, and far ahead of us in technological development.
Taking a closer look at Earth’s geology and we’ll see its rigid crust, a rather thin layer of rock that divides the continents and the ocean floor. The crust sits on tectonic plates that shift slowly in time in the lithosphere. At the bottom of the tectonic plates, around 80 to 100 kilometers below the surface, the asthenosphere begins.
Earth’s inner flow occurs in the asthenosphere, and the convection phenomenon at this level is believed to assist the perpetual motion of tectonic plates, but the exact method and visual aspect of the frontier between the lithosphere and asthenosphere is not yet clear. The CIA stocks data tracking systems and deep-sea sonar imagery, but the high-level confidentiality status prohibits the scientists’ access in the absence of specific security clearance.
This type of intelligent Homo Sapiens may have evolved differently, considering the much more stable climate inside the planet. The general consensus is that we’re just ants from their point of view, and there is a small chance that they’ll intervene in our world’s affairs, of those from the surface who struggle with their not so beneficent existence.
“So if you have an an alien civilization trying to listen for other civilizations, or our civilization trying to listen for aliens, there’s only one small period in the development of their society when all of their communication will be sent via the most primitive and most unprotected means.
So when we think about everything that we’re hearing through our satellites or everything that they’re hearing from our civilization (if there are indeed aliens out there), all of their communications are encrypted by default.
“So what we are hearing, that’s actually an alien television show, or you know, a phone call… is indistinguishable to us from cosmic microwave background radiation.”
Having these uncertainties in reference to Earth’s inner structure and layer appearance leaves room for serious suspicions, since the Earth’s mantle could provide better living conditions than its surface. Jules Verne may have been onto something big that might prove to be as real as it can get, while we are taught to believe that everything related to fiction is rejected by the dull reality we live in.
But is this really the case? Is the material realm that we live in fully explored and understood by humanity’s scientific tools? Or is it rather a mirage from which we cannot escape unless we open our eyes and see beyond the illusions?
Despite the fact we had no problems with the occupants of the hallow earth so far, or recorded none that we would know of, the military are considering detonating a nuclear warhead that will seal the deep caves which connect the surface of the Earth with the settlers of the mantle, ultimately preventing the alleged passage from opening again. At least that’s what Snowden revelead in a recent interview.
The idea of our governments irrationally intervening into such important matters is not a foreign idea.NASA nuked the moon in 2009, destroying whatever alien outpost was located out there, and if you remember the Colares UFO incident where the military had gathered unquestionable proof of extraterrestrial existence but afterwards decided to evacuated the local population and set the dust on the entire report until recently. Even the US military officials warned about little green men and the threath they’ll pose in the near future.
With all these neglijent moves, the inner earth’s inhabitants might be up to something. With a wave of mysterious sounds that were heard all over the world, including the one from the Caribbeans that can be heard from outer space, there’s a good chance our intra-terrestrial neighbors are up to something.
If we’re going to assist to a clash between the earthly powers and the mythical dwellers of the far reaches of the Earth we’re yet to find out. Hopefully, this historic period of hasty transition will bring full disclosure for the human race. Everyone deserves to be aware and understand what’s going on.

CONTACT UNDERGROUND
CONTACT UNDERGROUND
An Alternative to the “Night of Lights” Might be a “Night of Remembering”
J. Burkes MD
Contactees report having recurrent dreams sometimes called the "night of lights" in which the nighttime sky is full of UFOs. It is a wish dream that I must admit that I've fancied too. In my opinion however this will not likely take place anytime in the conceivable future, as such an awesome event would trigger a terribly violent human response. I suggest something very different might happen if current trends continue.
Thirty-two years ago I met Dr John Mack in Moscow at a physicians’ peace conference. It was 1985, the year that our “International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War” won the Nobel Prize for educating government leaders and the public about the dangers of nuclear arms race. Later John Mack MD went on to write the important book “Abduction.” There he describes the strange way in which some contact experiencers called “abductees” suddenly recall having encounters with aliens that they believe happened decades before.
This kind of sudden "remembering" happening initially on a small scale is less threatening than a “night of lights” with our skies full of “craft.” This is especially so for those clandestine groups that I imagine believe it is their job to keep a lid on the flying saucer situation. Such elite factions operating in secrecy are often referred to as the “control groups.” They are likely quasi-governmental quasi-corporate entities in my opinion are likely responsible for the UFO cover-up.
THE MENTAL LINK
Psychological and parapsychological factors play important roles in the UFO contact drama unfolding all around us. Unfortunately many so-called "mainstream" UFOlogists fail to grasp that a consciousness connection is the key to understanding the human-UFO intelligence relationship. In my opinion theirs is an uninformed and unenlightened perspective on the flying saucer phenomenon. Mainstream ufology’s approach stands in marked contrast to the contactee network that I promote and like to call the “Contact Underground.” We view the mental aspects of the phenomenon to be central to deciphering the mystery of Unidentified Flying Objects.
SIGHTINGS ARE NOT RANDOM EVENTS
After years of study I now believe that there is no such thing as a random sighting. I am suggesting that every true sighting of a UFO with few exceptions occurs while there is a telepathic link between the witnesses and the intelligence responsible for the phenomenon. Thus sightings should be viewed as staged events in which individuals are specifically targeted to have an encounter.
If true then the implications of this proposition are staggering. Approximately ten percent of the world’s population admits to having a UFO sighing. On a planetary basis this translates into over 600 million people. If the consciousness connection is as widespread and robust as I suggest it is, then each of those hundreds of millions of individuals might at some time in the future start to remember in the way that Dr Mack’s patients did.
A COLD WAR WITH UFOs
A hidden aspect of the human UFO relationship has been a kind of secret cold war between flying saucers and terrestrial military forces. Given the extraordinary secrecy surrounding this issue it is understandable that the few reports we read about military encounters are probably the tip of the iceberg. In other words there have been many hostile engagements.
In my judgment there have been losses of personnel and material on both sides. This is a rather dispassionate way of stating that humans and what we call “ETs” are being killed.
Given this sorry state of affairs, “the night of lights” in which the sky is full of saucers would understandably be perceived as being an “invasion.” A less dangerous plan to help humanity understand that we are not alone in the universe might involve having increasing numbers of people gradually recalling additional encounters from their past.
For those of us who want a peaceful outcome to the UFO situation, this “remembering of prior contacts” scenario would probably be much safer for both any extraterrestrials flying around Earth and those that might be tempted to try to shoot them down.
About the author: Dr Burkes volunteered as a Working Group Coordinator for the CE-5 Initiative from 1992 till 1998. He has continued to study the flying saucer phenomenon working with MUFON and the Peruvian contact network now called Rahma. Joseph Burkes MD is co-author of the book “Paths to Contact” edited by Jeff Becker. Dr Burkes retired from the Southern California Pemanente Group after thirty years service in 2008. He is a board certified internal medicine physician and is licensed to practice in California.

Broad Haven UFO sightings marked 40 years on
Broad Haven UFO sightings marked 40 years on
There were no alien invasions or tales of abduction, yet a UFO sighting by a group of Pembrokeshire school children remains one of the most famous cases in Wales.
It was 40 years ago when a class of pupils at Broad Haven Primary School said they spotted a UFO in a field near their playground.
It was one of a wave of sightings in the area in 1977 - dubbed the Dyfed Triangle.
David Davies was 10 at the time and heard reports of pupils seeing flying saucers throughout the day.
"I was a natural born sceptic so after the bell rang I decided to go to the area that the children said they had seen it," he told BBC Wales.
He described seeing a silver "cigar-shaped" craft with a "dome covering the middle third".
"My sighting only lasted a couple of seconds. It popped up and then went back behind a tree."
Mr Davies said he did not feel afraid, "more in awe and wonderment", although he admitted he had "a strange desire to run away".
Image captionDavid Davies said UFOs has been a subject which has gone on to "dominate" his life
None of the teachers believed the children and so the headmaster separated them and got them to draw what they saw. There were slight variations, but what they drew was basically the same.
Mr Davies described the days that followed as a "wild rollercoaster."
"It went crazy with the media and it was difficult to settle down and actually think about what we had seen."
Two months later, Rosa Granville, who ran the Haven Fort Hotel in nearby Little Haven, described seeing an object which looked like an "upside-down saucer" and two "faceless humanoid" creatures with pointed heads.
She said so much heat came off it, her "face felt burned".
"There was light coming from it and flames of all colours. Then [the creatures] came out of these flames, that's what I don't understand," she said.
When she visited the field she said there was "two inches of burned grounds".
Ms Granville said the incident left her "agitated and disturbed".

A number of theories have been put forward to explain the sightings.
Then-MP for Pembroke, Nicholas Edwards contacted the Ministry of Defence after being "inundated" with UFO sightings.
Flt Lt Cowan, an officer from RAF Brawdy, visited Ms Granville's hotel and examined the site, but could find no evidence of a landing.
He joked: "Should a UFO arrive at RAF Brawdy we will charge normal landing fees."
In his report, he mentioned the possibility that a "local prankster was at work" and the description of aliens "fitted exactly the type of protection suit that would have been issued in the event of a fire at one of the local oil refineries".
This fits in with the account of businessman Glyn Edwards, who in 1996 revealed he wandered around the area in a silver suit in 1977 as a prank.
Image captionThe Broad Haven pupil's sightings sparked a media frenzy
The National Archives also released files which examined UFO sightings across Wales, and the officials who investigated the Broad Haven sightings suspected pranksters.
"There is general speculation in the neighbourhood that a practical joker may be at work," wrote staff at S4 - the government department that investigated sightings at the time.
It was also thought school children could have confused a sewage tank as a UFO, although many were from farming backgrounds and would have been familiar with the machinery.
More recently, a former US Navy sailor said the figure in a silver suit was in fact a member of US military personnel wearing their standard fireproof uniform and the UFOs were new Harrier jets flying over.
Image caption"No matter how much I have read, it's still a mystery," said Mr Davies
To mark 40 years since the sightings, a conference is being held in Broad Haven on Saturday, organised by Swansea UFO Network.
Organiser Emyln Williams said the case started "worldwide interest".
Asked if he thought it was genuine, he said: "One child can lie, but can a whole class?
"Over 40 years at least one of them might have come forward to say they made it up - but they haven't."
Mr Williams said there were several sightings the day the children claimed to have seen a UFO, including at Hubberston School in Milford Haven.
"That year there was so much happening. It is what we know as a UFO flap," he said.

Eyewitness Mr Davies, who lives in Shropshire, will be a guest speaker.
He said he had always been open-minded to the theories which attempted to explain the sightings and at no time had he "ever sensationalised his story".
"So many people are ridiculed for saying they have seen a UFO," he said, describing his secondary school life as a "misery".
"I was beaten senseless purely because of what happened to me. It would have been so much easier to take back my story."
He admits UFOs has been a subject that has gone on to "dominate his life".
"At one point I must have had the largest library of books in Wales on the subject."
Image captionBroad Haven School today
Attending alongside Mr Davies is Neil Spring, who wrote a book based on the Broad Haven sightings.
"The moment I heard of this small village plagued by UFO sightings, I was inspired to understand what really happened," he said.
His research uncovered a secret investigation by the military police.
"Whilst the government was telling the public they had no records of any unusual activity in the area, privately, officials were so concerned about the UFO sightings in Broad Haven that they asked the military police to conduct a 'discreet' investigation," he said.
Mr Spring believes local pranksters were behind some of the sightings, but said "people emulate what's happening around them" and the pranks were inspired by events which had been "sincerely reported".
"My research showed that there were strange occurrences in Broad Haven long before the incident at the school and for a long times afterwards.
"So you can take the children out of the story and you'll still have the story."

Sketches drawn by children who saw a UFO in Broad Haven
TODAY marks 40 years since school children in Broad Haven sparked a massive spike in interest from UFO enthusiasts after an unusual sighting.
Interest in what happened in Broad Haven in 1977 has never dwindled and will be celebrated with a special conference today.
The Swansea UFO Network is holding a Welsh Triangle 40th Anniversary Conference examining what happened on February 4 1977.
A whole class of school children from Broad Haven Primary School saw an unusual craft land in a field next to the school as well as mysterious silver figure walking about.
Their stories were dismissed as fantasy but the children were so adamant they had seen something unusual they handed in a petition to the police station. Their head teacher later asked them to draw the UFO and was amazed at how similar their pictures were.
Randall Pugh was instrumental in bringing the story to the attention of the media and it became an overnight sensation.
The case was extensively investigated at the time and first appeared in the Western Telegraph sparking world-wide interest in what turned out to be the start of a major series of sightings in the area – dubbed ‘The Welsh Triangle’.
Dubbed Called the “West Wales flap” of 1977, the incident was second only to the “Warminster Thing” in British UFO history.
According to documents released in 2005 a secret military investigation was launched into claims that alien craft and their tall humanoid occupants were taking a particular interest in the local coastline.
Organisers of next month’s conference are looking for witnesses to UFO sightings in south-west Wales during the 1977 ‘flap’ to tell people what they saw and experienced.
The conference will be held at Broad Haven Village Hall, 10am to 5pm. Speakers confirmed so far include author Neil Spring (The Watchers), David L. Richards (UFO Wales) and special video link with Peter Paget, author of the Welsh Triangle and UFO-UK.
There will also be a visit to the UFO sighting location at the exact time it happened 40 years ago.

Het maakt me misselijk.”
De helderziende beschreef het cilindervormige voorwerp in een doos: “Er zit een bom in de doosen die ontploft.”
UFO discourse is shrouded in mystery, intrigue, and a large dose of eccentricity. Mainstream media typically refuses to engage with the UFO topic, so UFO researchers and enthusiasts are generally left to congregate in the dark corners of the internet looking for scraps of reliable information to add to their repertoire. It should come as no surprise that when a massive collection of UFO related information emerges from Wikileaks, the UFO crowd begins to frenzy. While Wikileaks is not constrained by the forces that restrict mainstream media, is the Wikileaks effect good for the study of the UFO question?
A few days ago, Rob Waugh of The Metro published a story in regards to a ‘Wikileaked’ diplomatic cable from 1978 in which Sir Eric Gairy, the former Prime Minister of Granada, approached the United Nations with a request for a formal investigation into UFOs. Part of the cable states,
[Gairy] had come to New York to present the item because of his ‘deep personal conviction’ that the subject of UFOs was one of ‘world-wide importance and significance’ and indeed, one which warranted very serious consideration by the United Nations.
Sir Eric Gairy
While dated, the story did get good circulation through UFO communities, but it raises an important question; is this cable Ufologically valuable, and transitively, does the massive collection of Wikileaks UFO data, from cables to emails, actually help in solving the UFO riddle? Answering this question requires a quick look back into the historical relationship between Wikileaks itself and UFOs.
Wikileaks exploded into cultural and social consciousness over six years ago when it posted hundreds of thousands of raw secret US government documents concerning the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. What soon followed were a quarter of a million classified diplomatic cables, many of which were quite damaging, and the general understanding that no one, no matter how high up they were in government, was safe from having their dirty laundry aired.
As time went on, and Wikileaks continued to release documents, UFO researchers began to search the Wikileaks archive for any mention of UFOs. From curious cables and messages regarding the planet Nibiru, to UFO cult recruiting practices, to even a city mayor referring to ‘life on other planets’– the content on Wikileaks created significant buzz in the UFO world.
However, the biggest surge of UFO data came in 2016. Leaked emails from Hillary Clinton’s campaign manager and known UFO enthusiast John Podesta, infamously known as The Podesta E-mails, took center stage as the Presidential elections were in full swing. While the bulk of the content was not UFO related, it did not take long for UFO researchers to begin digging into the collection to find as much UFO content as possible.
Tom DeLonge, featured in Rolling Stone Magazine
One of the most intriguing revelations from the e-mails concerns Tom DeLonge of Blink 182 fame, and his meetings with Podesta as well as other high ranking American military officials. In one of the emails to Podesta, DeLonge stated that he wanted to set up a meeting between himself, Podesta, and officials who were,
…principal leadership relating to our sensitive topic…in charge of most fragile divisions, as it relates to Classified Science and DOD topics.
In another email, one of these officials is named as General William McCasland. DeLonge writes,
When Roswell crashed, they shipped it to the laboratory at Wright Patterson Air Force Base. General McCasland was in charge of that exact laboratory up to a couple years ago… he not only knows what I’m trying to achieve, he helped assemble my advisory team…he’s a very important man.
The Podesta E-mails contained a lot of UFO related material, which is to be expected since the man is interested in the topic. DeLonge’s messages are just one sample from a long list. However, the result of these leaked emails secured the UFO community’s infatuation with Wikileaks as a legitimate source for information.
It was a sort of rallying call. UFO researchers finally had an organization with a household name behind them. This wasn’t some small UFO news website which catered to a small crowd; this was Wikileaks, a giant and powerful internet presence which made headline news almost on a daily basis. This was, and still is today, nothing short of alluring for a subculture relegated to the social fringe. Alluring is not always good, however. The Wikileaks effect has done to UFOs what it has done to every other cultural topic; it has blurred the lines between facts researched within context, and dumped information devoid of context.
A still shot of a “real” alien taken from a YouTube video claiming to be from the “Deep Web.” A bit of research provides a more dubious source from hoaxers.
It isn’t that Wikileaks is good or bad, but it has changed the game. UFO discourse now has access to more data, but that data is not fact checked or researched before being released. It is simply raw, and anyone can spin that information to suit their own beliefs or agenda. Some of that raw information on Wikileaks may be useful in the search for truth, and some has and will be used by charlatans to line their own pockets or boost their own egos. People need to remain critical.
Diplomatic cables posted out of context are not facts, and emails in regards to one man’s opinions and beliefs are not evidence. The radical transparency Wikileaks attempts to provide is most definitely here to stay, but those who study the UFO question must be weary, as it’s easy to become blinded. Nothing on Wikileaks has led to concrete evidence that proves UFOs are anything more than their acronym. Perhaps one day, UFO researchers will find the holy grail hidden in the Wikileaks data archive, but until then, they need to be more critical of the information they pull from the massive data dump. As Podesta tweeted in 2014, #thetruthisstilloutthere.
