50 Years Ago, Michigan Congressman Gerald Ford Made UFOs a Political Issue
50 Years Ago, Michigan Congressman Gerald Ford Made UFOs a Political Issue
Gerald R. Ford didn't want to believe. He wanted to know what the hell was happening in Michigan.
Fifty years ago, soon-to-be president and then-representative Gerald R. Ford changed the conversation about UFOs in a very permanent way. In 1966, a growing number of reported sightings of Unidentified Flying Objects were coming out of Michigan. Naturally, people were concerned. Being the representative of the state’s 5th District, Ford shared their concern and called upon congress to conduct a “congressional inquiry” into the matter.
And he wasn’t shy about taking on the problem. UFOs were getting a lot of media attention and Ford didn’t shy away from a spotlight. He issued a pre-hearingpress release making the case for government transparency and calling out a prominent astronomer.
Ford is not satisfied with the Air Force explanation of the recent sightings in Michigan and describes the “swamp gas” version given by astrophysicist J. Allen Hynek as “flippant”
Ford proposed that either the Science and Astronautics Committee or the Armed Services Committee of the House schedule UFO hearings and “invite testimony from both the executive branch of the government and some of the persons who claim to have seen UFO’s.” Politically speaking, he was all in.
Now, it’s important to remember that this is 1966. We’re talking Cold War, post-Cuban Missile Crisis, hide-under-your-desks-in-the-event-of-a-nuclear-attack America. This stuff wasn’t funny. It was weird and frightening. When Ford called for a formal congressional inquiry, he lent a degree of credibility to loose rumors, but he also calmed public panic. His commitment to transparency on the parts of the Air Force and the government sent a clear message: The government won’t hide hard truths.
Amateur photo of "purported UFO" by George Stock in Passaic, New Jersey, 1952
Ford didn’t get his congressional inquiry, but he did get a major report from the University of Colorado Boulder and the Air Force’s Project Blue Book, which was responsible for investigating UFO sightings.
This Project Blue Book investigation lasted a little over three years before it was terminated in 1969. According to a fact sheet distributed by the US Air Force to the Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Ohio, “The decision to discontinue UFO investigations was based on an evaluation of a report prepared by the University of Colorado entitled, “Scientific Study of Unidentified Flying Objects;” a review of the University of Colorado’s report by the National Academy of Sciences; past UFO studies and Air Force experience investigating UFO reports during the 40s, ‘50s, and ‘60s.”
So what did the report find?
Between 1947 and 1969, Project Blue Book had 12,618 reports of UFOs, 701 of which were deemed “unidentified.” Many were explained away as meteorological events, classified test flights, weather balloons and things of that nature. Those that remained unidentified apparently lacked sufficiently compelling evidence to keep Project Blue Book afloat.
The distributed US Air Force document goes on to state:
“As a result of these investigations and studies and experience gained from investigating UFO reports since 1948, the conclusions of Project BLUE BOOK are:(1) no UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force has ever given any indication of threat to our national security;(2) there has been no evidence submitted to or discovered by the Air Force that sightings categorized as “unidentified” represent technological developments or principles beyond the range of present-day scientific knowledge; and(3) there has been no evidence indicating that sightings categorized as “unidentified” are extraterrestrial vehicles.”
Even after the Air Force hung up its tin hat, though, civilians continued investigations into UFOs. Today, organizations like MUFON exist to catalog and track UFO sightings.
As we become increasingly convinced of the probability that we’re not alone in this universe, the investigation of unexplained events and UFO sightings seems more urgent and more credible than ever before.
There’s reason to think that without Ford’s willingness to risk his reputation on an insistence that UFO sightings be investigated, there may not have been an investigation or a report at all. Ford gave the witnesses behind these sightings credibility and drew attention to need for an explanation, no matter how vague.
Though there was never a formal congressional hearing, Ford’s push for transparency from the government and the military was an important move, and had everyone from politicians to mailmen thinking about UFOs seriously.
Whether or not we have the “whole truth” is still a matter that conspiracy theorists and those who want to believe are ready and willing to debate. Any way you spin the flying disc, though, the original man who wanted to believe just might’ve been Gerald R. Ford.

A low-flying aircraft, described by witnesses as similar to a "cargo plane", was spotted over Whitleigh while a second UFO was sighted flying over Stoke
SEPARATE sightings of an unidentified flying object shooting across the Plymouth skyline have left two residents speechless - and air traffic controllers baffled.
A low-flying aircraft, described as a "cargo plane" by witnesses, was first spotted shortly after 7pm on Monday night hovering above a row of houses in Whitleigh.
Less than three hours later and locals in Stoke reported seeing an "out-of-this-world" spaceship with "bright, white lights" shifting from left to right at high speed.
Air traffic controllers, meanwhile, say there were no known planes flying over the city at the specified times.
Vicky Liu
Two UFOs were spotted by Herald reader Vicky Liu earlier this week flying over Morrisons
Ian Shepherd, who reported the Stoke sighting, said: "I thought it was a plane at first, but it was moving way too fast to be something from this world.
"It was travelling from left to right, left to right. It was so quick, it was like it was teleporting across the sky.
"It was so far away, it was hard to say what it was exactly, but it was football-shaped and had this light that changed from being constant and white to blinking and rusty-like. It was copper-coloured.
"It was such a clear sky that there was no way anyone could miss it. It was definitely not a drone, it was too quick and bright for that and it definitely wasn't a plane.
"I don't care what people might say, that was a UFO."
Earlier in the evening, witnesses described a "silent" aircraft flying just inches above a house on Taunton Avenue in Whitleigh.
A local resident, who has asked not to be named, said he was with his cousin and a friend when the 'plane' flew overhead.
"I thought it was going to hit a chimney," he said.
"It turned on its side and it was literally inches away from hitting these houses. The strange thing was, I couldn't hear any engines or jets.
"It was silent. It passed over us so quickly that I didn't manage to get a picture, but all three of us saw it.
"I was shocked. I even reported it to the police using their non-emergency number, but they didn't know what it was."
A Ministry of Defence spokesman confirmed there were no military flights scheduled in Plymouth on Monday night, though a Cornish man photographed what he claims was a NATO spy plane circling over St Austell on Tuesday morning.
Paul Beauchamp, of the National Air Traffic Services, gave some hope to conspiracy theorists, however, after failing to rule out the two sightings.
"We have had a look at our logs for Monday night and there are no reports which match this type of activity," he explained.
"However, we handle traffic in a controlled air space and, for Plymouth, that starts at around 14,000ft. Any reports of aircraft flying near housing is too low for us to monitor.
"We cannot categorically say what it was these two people saw."
Masses of people have taken to social media to find out answers, and there have been an assortment of sugegstions as to what the strange sight might have been.
From cargo planes to drones with LED lights attached, no conclusion has yet been reached.
Tish Curran said on Facebook: "It flew past my house in Wotter, was quite low as could see it out the window."
And Nina Carter commented: "I saw the low flying plane last night when I was working in Ernesettle at about 7, it flew over Tamerton creek heading towards the Tamar Bridge, I thought it was a military aircraft too."
However Aaron Barrett offered an alternative. He said: "Sorry to disappoint but it was my drone I had some new LED lights attached."

UFOs seem to blip out or instantly vanish over Ontario, Canada.
UFOs are reported across the globe on a daily basis, and it’s often the same thing — a circular object shines brilliantly in the sky, and then, instantly, it disappears.
Of course, if an advanced civilization in a far off galaxy had the technology to cross the far reaches of space, we might assume the pilots of those spacecraft could also have a cloaking device or hyperspace afterburners, like you might see in your favorite science fiction movie.
A sighting last month in Ontario, Canada, posted to YouTube, delights viewers’ eyes and lives up to every expectation of a close encounter, except in one respect: It probably isn’t real.
We generally don’t comment on anonymous UFO reports posted on social media. However, this one seems to illustrate an important point, and you might keep this in mind the next time you think you see an ET’s spacecraft.
The eyewitness, known only from his V-For-Victor (V4V) YouTube channel, claims that he saw through his bedroom window, “three bright objects in the sky hovering beside each other in a strange formation.”
V4V decided to videotape the objects after they began to blink randomly, disappear and reappear in the same spot. The following 13-second video shows some of this activity.
The incident is under investigation by MUFON, an international UFO research organization that collects UFO reports and attempts to come up with credible explanations for those sightings.
MUFON is not related to any academic organization, nor are their internally trained investigators required to have advanced degrees in science.
The first problem with this submission, of course, is that we don’t know the identity of the eyewitness.
MUFON claims it withholds a submitter’s personal information to save that person the negative attention that might come from claiming to see a UFO.
That’s understandable. Nobody wants to be dismissed as a kook. Still, that means we know nothing about this person’s credibility, mental health or sobriety at the time of the incident. He or she might simply be a prankster.
In this particular case, HuffPost reached out for more information to V4V, who didn’t respond to our request.
The YouTube posting does provide some background, at least.
“I have no idea how high and how far away the UFOs were,” V4V says. “[They] looked very large. I did not hear strange noises or any aircraft engines ... The color of the UFOs was a yellow/orange, almost like car lights.”
But we don’t know exactly when the incident took place because the witness’ post contains conflicting information, and there are no corroborating witnesses.
His written report begins with: “Filmed with a iPad Air 2, on Feb. 19, 2016.”
Yet, just below that, where the incident description actually unfolds, it says: “OnFeb. 21, 2016, at around 5:50 PM, I witnessed 3 UFOs hovering outside.”
So, did this take place on Feb. 19 or Feb. 21?
A Holland-based YouTube channel, FindingUFO, presents information, news and videos about dubious UFOs, submitted by people from around the world. The channel added some visual enhancements to the Canada video, in the following attempt to better clarify the UFOs in this story:
Some of the comments on the YouTube page of the original report support the eyewitness’ testimony of capturing something very unusual in the sky.
Others weren’t so kind, suggesting the UFOs were simply window-reflected lights.
HuffPost showed the video and written report to Marc Dantonio, a video and image specialist of FX Models, who uses advanced software tools in his photo analysis work.
“Interesting video,” Dantonio emailed HuffPost. “However, I noticed something peculiar when the objects vanish in the ‘sky.’ I say ‘sky’ that way because, in my opinion, they were very likely not in the sky at all. I could see, at one point in the video, the edge of a window. I believe we are seeing lights reflected in a window, and the ‘winking out’ is just the light becoming blocked in the room, and thus, no longer reflecting in the window.
“The right-hand light goes out top to bottom. It’s like someone slid a piece of paper or cardboard down in front of the lights one by one. In my opinion, we are looking through a window and viewing light reflections that were extinguished manually, one by one.”
We’re not saying this is what V4V did. We’re just keeping the dialogue open.
UFOs? Maybe They’re Just...
Sky Lanterns Mistaken For UFOs
Chinese or sky lanterns are often misidentified as UFOs. These three were part of a large group of lanterns that was the main event of the 2013 Pingxi Sky Lantern Festival in Taiwan on Feb. 24, 2013.
Kentucky UFO -- Oct. 16, 2012
Amateur astronomer Allen Epling captured video and images of a cylindrical object in the sky above his Virgie, Ky., home on Oct. 16, 2012. This is one of the images he took, which led many to believe the object was a high-flying solar balloon.
Manufactured UFO -- 2011
Pictured is a quad copter -- a deliberately manufactured UFO created by special effects wizard Marc Dantonio for a National Geographic special, "The Truth Behind: UFOs," which aired in December 2011. On the left is what the small device looks like resting on the ground, measuring 4 feet in circumference. At right, is how it appeared behind a tree in the night sky.
Boomerang UFO composite images -- 10-5-12
This is a composite of images shot by two eyewitnesses of a boomerang-shaped UFO they reported seeing over their Burbank, Calif., home on Oct. 5, 2012. Mutual UFO Network photo/video analyst Marc Dantonio concluded the object was likely "a balloon, floating on the wind that has collapsed in half."
Melbourne, Australia, Feb. 2013
This is a composite image of how three alleged UFOs maneuvered about in the sky over Melbourne, Australia, in early February, 2013. The final verdict isn't in yet on whether they're birds, aircraft, balloons, bugs or something truly unidentified.
Exploding Weather Balloons, Not UFOs
On Dec. 20, 2012, a bright, circular object (pictured at the top of this composite image) was videotaped exploding in the skies above Sacramento, Calif. It wasn't immediately identified, resulting in speculation that it was either an alien spacecraft, military top secret weapon, runaway planet, North Korean satellite, among others. Within a short period of time, it became apparent that this was a weather balloon. The bottom part of this image shows such a balloon as it ascended over Tampa Bay, Fla., on July 2, 2012, and exploded in an identical manner as the Sacramento object, probably much to the dismay of all true ET believers out there.
Weather Phenomenon
Some UFO sightings may be due to a natural phenomenon known as sprites, like this one shown from 2006. "Lightning from [a] thunderstorm excites the electric field above, producing a flash of light called a sprite," said geophysicist Colin Price.
Clouds
Clouds: Saucer-shaped or "lenticular" clouds that form at high altitudes have been confused with UFOs.
Meteors
Meteors: Space debris can create a spectacular light show when it burns through the Earth's atmosphere, and sometimes reported as UFOs.

NASA Scientist speaks out: There’s someone else on the moon
NASA Scientist speaks out: There’s someone else on the moon
It seems that it isn’t a question anymore whether or not there are mysterious ‘Alien’ structures on the moon. In the last couple of years, numerous scientists with verifiable background have come forward speaking about a sinister truth behind Earth’s moon.
Ever since the Freedom of Information Act was created, people have become aware that not all what goes on ‘behind the scenes’ is made public. We are talking about the numerous discoveries that have been made throughout the years and have been kept safely away from society.
One of the best comments about this secrecy was made by Neil Armstrong when he said that there are: “great ideas undiscovered, breakthroughs available to those who can remove one of the truth’s protective layers.” (source) (source)
The Freedom of Information Act allows full or partial disclosure of highly classified –previously unreleased—information and archives controlled by the Government of the United States of America.
In the last couple of years, a number of scientists working for NASA have come forward speaking about Earth’s moon and the mysteries associated with it. For example, George Leonard, A NASA scientists in charge of photo analysis obtained several extremely ‘controversial’ images from the moon, published in his book called Somebody Else Is On The Moon.
Even though the images featured in the book are of a relatively poor quality and small size, they display some incredible features of original massive prints belonging to NASA.
To back his claims up, Leonard even published the identifying code numbers belonging to the original images in his work, however, this was still not enough to say for certain whether or not the images are real, and the poor quality of the images makes it even harder to believe.
However, what is perhaps even more interesting than the images and their respective identification codes are the statements made by Leonard and his verified NASA credentials.
Leonard was yet another NASA employee who had spoken out about what was found on the moon, which is seen in some of the images taken during the Apollo missions. In his book, Leonard argues that NASA has known about extraterrestrial activity on the moon and have ever since, attempted to hide the information from the general public. Leonard wasnt the only one to make such claims.
“Read the books, read the lore, start to understand what has really been going on, because there is no doubt that we are being visited. . . . The universe that we live in is much more wondrous, exciting, complex and far-reaching than we were ever able to know up to this point in time. . . . [Mankind has long wondered if we’re] alone in the universe. [But] only in our period do we really have evidence. No, we’re not alone.” – Dr. Edgar Mitchell, ScD., former NASA astronaut and the 6th man to walk on the moon.
In 1979 Maurice Chatelain, former chief of NASA Communications Systems confirmed that Armstrong had indeed reported seeing two UFOs on the rim of a crater. “The encounter was common knowledge in NASA,” he revealed, “but nobody has talked about until now.”
According to Armstrong, unofficially, “We were warned away.” “I cannot go into details, except to say that their ships were far superior to ours both in size and technology. They were great … and threatening “.
Many people firmly believe that not all of the images released by NASA are the actual originals taken on the moon, and many believe this is because the original images of the moon reveal structures and artifacts that would cause pandemic among the general public. Many believe that there are hundreds of images from NASA that have been altered in order to hide structures, moon bases, and artifact that prove there is an Alien presence on the Moon. NASA scientists Dr. Farouk El-Baz described this the best way possible when he stated that “not every discovery has been announced to the public”.
In addition to Leonard and several former astronauts who have spoken out about Alien life, another interestingl claim comes from Dr. John Brandenburg who was the Deputy Manager of the Clementine Mission to the Moon The mission discovered water at the Moon’s poles in 1994. (source)
In an interview, Dr. Brandenburg —who spoke out about the fact that Life on Mars existed in the distant past— said the following:
“It was (the Clementine Mission) a photo reconnaissance mission basically to check out if someone was building bases on the moon that we didn’t know about. Were they expanding them?”
“Of all the pictures I’ve seen from the moon that show possible structures, the most impressive is a picture of miles wide recto-linear structure. This looked unmistakably artificial, and it shouldn’t be there. As somebody in the space defense community, I look on any such structure on the moon with great concern because it isn’t ours, there’s no way we could have built such a thing. It means someone else is up there.” (source)
Dr. Brandenburg made extremely interesting statements about Mars when he said that “there is enough evidence to prove that at least two major nuclear blasts went off on the surface of the red planet in the distant past.”
The theory proposed by Dr. Brandenburg is based on the traces of uranium and thorium that have been registered on the surface of Mars. This Martian civilization was wiped out by another hostile alien race from elsewhere in the universe. Dr Brandenburg warns that our civilization could face the same faith.
All of the above statements are clear indications of one thing: Extraterrestrial contact, on a global scale, is inevitable.
Officially, NASA and scientists around the globe have spoken out about aliens, and how they expect we will discover signs of extraterrestrial life in the next 20 years or so. However, many people believe these statements are a mere preparation for a disclosure movement that is going to change everything we beleived about mankind, our origin, and life in the universe.

The UFO Bestiary
The UFO Bestiary
1990 - Wallonia, Belgium - This photograph was part of the Belgian Wave of 1989-1990. Taken by J.S. Henrardi on June 15, 1990. Mr. Henrardi released all copyright ownership to the photograph in 2003, making it available for public use.
The object very closely resembles the Petit Rechain triangle (further down page), also part of the Belgium wave. The triangles were reported by hundreds of witnesses during the wave over Belgium
1990 - Petit Rechain, Belgium. One of the most famous UFO pictures ever taken. The photographer, to my knowledge, still remains unnamed.
Taken on an April night during a well known "wave," the photo very clearly shows a triangle-shaped object with lights. One of the best proofs of UFOs we have. Original photo was too dark to show object outline, and had to be lightened.
1997 - Phoenix, Arizona. One of the most publicized UFO events in history.
First observed in a hexagram pattern at about 7:30 PM over the Superstition Mountains area east of Phoenix, the characteristic 8+1 formation of amber orbs was next seen in two separate arc patterns with "trailing lights" over the Gila River.
They were spotted about 9:50 and again at 10:00 at the southern edge of Phoenix, were they were seen by thousands and videotaped by a handful who had camcorders close enough at hand to catch the fleeting minutes of their displays.
2002 - Glasgow, Scotland. The photographer or hoaxer said he took the picture at about 10:00 P.M. in Glasgow, Ayrshire, Scotland.
He said: "At around 10 PM, 2 months ago, I was looking out my window (I was actually looking for my cat that had ran out the door) when I saw this strange thing in the sky. As soon as I saw it I just grabbed my digital camera and took a picture.
"After I took the picture I turned round to give the camera to my girlfriend, looked back and it was gone. There was no noise just total silence.
P.S. The pic isn't great, my hands were a bit shaky."
2004 - Long Island New York - April, 23 - This very impressive image of lights was taken by a lady who is identified only as Marjorie. Early morning, she took her camera and captured some 25 photos of the sky that day, using a welder's glass to keep her eyes from the sun's harm.
They were taken with a JVC digital camera. The avid photographer was shocked to see the object in the sky.
Unknown, Bell-shaped Object Photographed in Idaho - 05-01-14
Witness/Photographer Statement: I was driving westward on Chinden Blvd. It was around 8:15 AM. To my north-west was this MASSIVE bell-shaped object hovering in the sky.
It just stayed there. In scale, it appeared to be larger than a hot air balloon.
I tried asking others about the sighting; they just guessed it may have been a hot air balloon. I did not have my pro-camera so I used my phone to click a few pictures.
You may not see massive UFO exhibits at your local science museum, but there’s no dearth of saucer stories infesting my email. Every day I receive several reports of alien sightings, extraterrestrial plans for Earth, and agitated screeds about the reluctance of scientists to take the whole subject seriously. Plenty of people think they have convincing evidence for other-worldly visitors, and they want me to know.
Allow me to first note that this is a phenomenon worthy of attention. If aliens are really hanging out in our ‘hood, it’s hard to imagine any other fact more worthy of study. If not, then why does such a large fraction of the populace insist on believing they’re here?
Note that few, if any, of these emails are penned by hoaxers. The correspondents are sincere, and many simply wish to help us in our search for evidence of extraterrestrial intelligence. Others are ticked off, usually at me.
It’s a fire hose of correspondence, but stepping back a bit from the massive electronic corpus, it strikes me that virtually all of it falls into one of four categories. For the curious and interested, I list these subject areas below, together with a modestly elaborated description of each.
Sightings.
c. 1985 - Nuzidath, Israel. This picture was taken in the village of Nuzidath and published by Gil Bar aided by Adrian Dvir's technical equipment.
This picture is a difficult one to draw any type of conclusion from. Are we looking at a bright light of a domed top with windows below, or is it something else?
The majority of my UFO diet consists of reports describing suspected encounters. This is not surprising, as there are thousands of sightings annually. The emailer has seen something unusual in the sky that he interprets as probable evidence of alien presence. Unfortunately, it’s hard to say much about these stories. After all, I wasn’t there.
I much prefer the photos and videos that are sometimes offered. The UFOs generally appear small, but contrary to frequent assumption, this doesn’t prove that they’re at high altitude moving at high speed (consider bugs and birds).
Many of the images are artifacts of photography. One gentleman sent me dozens of nighttime photos of city streets, featuring big, blobby and bright UFOs. But these luminous aliens only showed themselves when there was a street lamp in the shot. I suggested that they were internal reflections in the camera lens, and not alien ships behaving like moths. He disagreed...
Suggestions.
1975 - Saas-Fe, Switzerland. July 26. Members of a hunting party spotted this craft hovering low near the ground. It moved almost silently through the surrounding trees.
Fortunately, one member was able to snap this photograph of the object. I wish we had a better photograph of this one, it is a traditional disc shape with a top. Still, for 1975 this is an excellent piece of history.
Some people just want to feed the suggestion box. They’ve got information on how we can do our job better, such as telling us to swing our antennas in the direction of a particular star system where they’re sure aliens are awaiting discovery. A favorite suggested target is the star system Zeta Reticuli, a locale made popular by the famous UFO case of Betty and Barney Hill. As it happens, we have examined Zeta Reticuli with our antennas — not because of Betty and Barney, but because it’s close (39 light-years). We didn’t hear any Reticulans.
Other mails ask why we still look for radio signals when advanced aliens would surely communicate via hyperdimensional physics. Whatever that is. Others urge us to tune our receivers to the “frequency of DNA.” Whatever that is.
Strange stuff.
1957 - Edwards Air Force Base, California. Taken by a test pilot in September of 1957.
The UFO is following a B-57 twin jet. The UFO was not discovered until the photograph was developed. An excellent photo for that time period.
Why are we wasting time hunting for signals, say some correspondents, when extraterrestrials have left calling cards all over the planet? Virtually any pointed edifice is considered a candidate for alien engineering. After all, how could the Egyptians or Mayans have possibly stacked up stone blocks into pyramids? The Washington Monument — also pointy — is not considered an alien artifact as it was built by Americans who, of course, can manage this sort of project without extraterrestrial contractors.
Another story I get several times a month is that Homo sapiens is a deliberate creation of other-worldly beings. We’re E.T.’s science fair project. The fact that our DNA is 98 percent the same as that of chimps implies that either the aliens must have also created our simian pals, or they were content to make us only very slightly better than what Nature had already served up.
A final category of strange stuff includes the correspondents who repeatedly claim that they are aliens. I wonder if they enjoy equal protection under the law.
Slams.
1951 - Lubbock, Texas - The famous photographs from the "Lubbock lights" in Texas, 31 August 1951. Years later, ignoring all testimonies and evidences, skeptics stated that these objects were... birds.
This most ridiculous explanation was typical of how early UFO photos were often explained away. Carl Hart Jr. an 18-year-old student took this famous picture with his Kodak camera.
There were at least 100 witnesses who saw the objects. This is one of the classics of Ufology.
While the above correspondence is interesting, it’s not particularly unnerving. That cannot be said for those folks who like to excoriate me for being skeptical about alien visitation. They generally argue that the only reasons that few scientists give much credence to the visitation idea are these: (1) The government is keeping all the good evidence under wraps, and (2) Scientists are knee-jerk debunkers, unwilling to take any of this stuff seriously.
It’s hard to believe that the aliens have cleverly arranged things so that only governments can find convincing evidence of their presence. And, of course, if you accept that premise, it follows that all the UFO reports by ordinary citizens are inadequate to establish the truth of aliens-on-Earth (a bummer of a message for organizations like MUFON).
As for the idea that scientists are either dumb or deliberately mum — well hey, that’s a slur both silly and personally wounding.
Imagine if Bigfoot enthusiasts blamed their failure to convince zoologists of the existence of these elusive beasts on (1) the state of Washington, which was deliberately covering up the really good evidence, and (2) forest rangers, who were derelict in their duty because they don’t relentlessly investigate these hirsute hominids. Would such arguments convince you that Bigfoot was afoot?
The fact is, if you’re certain that our planet is hosting alien visitors, the way to gain acceptance for your point of view is to prove it, not insist that the problem lies with third parties. The blame game is a cop-out.
I live in New Mexico, a state famous for its landscapes, national laboratories exploring state-of-the-art technology and UFOs. That’s right, unidentified flying objects, little green space aliens and flying saucers — the whole enchilada, as we say in the land of enchantment. This affinity for extraterrestrials dates back to the late 1940s when the Roswell incident — a flying saucer crash, dead aliens, a government cover-up and more — thrust New Mexico into the national limelight. Roswell still celebrates the event with an annual UFO festival, which attracts people from around the globe.
My UFO awareness stems from my engineering consulting work. I have a couple of static VAR compensator projects under construction in southeastern New Mexico, so I travel through Roswell every couple of months on my way to check on their progress. It was natural for me to think of flying saucers when an old utility friend told me UFO history had been made in New Mexico. My imagination again jumped to flying saucers while he was talking about the commercialized unmanned flying object.
If only we had the equivalent of CliffsNotes for all the acronyms we use, life would be simpler. We would know a UFO is not a flying saucer and terms like UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle), UAS (unmanned aircraft system), sUAS (small unmanned aircraft system), RPA (remotely piloted aircraft) and DRTD (drones and robotics for transmission and distribution) would be less confusing. The term “drone” covers all of them, but there is a lot of pushback from the UAS suppliers. One friend told me his company preferred UAV; after all, drone is what a politician does when talking. Good point.
Getting back to my friend’s story, he was excited about the latest developments in drone usage. Several years ago, his utility looked into the use of drones on transmission lines. However, like so many other potential users, it decided to wait until regulators, government agencies and the marketplace all got on the same page — especially when the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) decreed the United States was a nationwide no-fly zone for commercial drones in 2007.
Fortunately, proponents of drone technology took the FAA to court, and it was ruled the FAA did not have the authority to make that decree. Now the FAA has to reconsider its no-fly edict and, as a result, has started issuing exceptions permitting specific commercial drone activities, but it is a slow process.
BVLOS Takes Flight
Industrywise, we have many proponents out there who saw the real advantages UAVs offered utilities. These folks kept kicking at that cactus (that is, regulatory) and the bureaucracy’s flexibility is increasing. This brings us back to the UFO story. The FAA issues special drone permits, but they only allow for line-of-sight flights. To be useful for tasks like transmission line surveying or maintenance inspections, drones must be allowed to fly beyond visual line of sight (BVLOS). There is no way an operator can walk or drive a right-of-way (ROW) and keep within visual range of a drone.
That is why the Oct. 25, 2015, New Mexico drone flight became such a historical event and excited my utility friend. It was the first FAA-sanctioned commercial UAV flight using BVLOS technology to take place inside the 48 contiguous states. Previously, the only FAA-sanctioned BVLOS UAV flight testing took place in remote Arctic regions off the coast of Alaska. The New Mexico BVLOS flight brought UAV technology a step closer to applications needed by the power industry.
The flight was part of the FAA’s Pathfinder program. BNSF Railway provided the infrastructure to inspect, while Insitu, a subsidiary of the Boeing Co., provided the drone and the FAA certification to fly it. Insitu used a small ScanEagle surveillance UAV to provide real-time video of a 64-mile survey of a 132-mile section of BNSF railroad track near Vaughn, New Mexico. The 35-pound aircraft flew about 1,000 feet above the railroad track at speeds of approximately 90 mph. It was equipped with a transponder to transmit its location to local air traffic control and a video camera streaming data back to the ground station.
A Win-Win
My friend was excited because BVLOS drone flights are exactly what electric utilities need to fly UAV flights over transmission line ROW. Drones are capable of high-resolution videos and 3-D renderings, but they need the freedom of BVLOS flight. Today’s special FAA permits for commercial drone flights require the pilot to be in visual contact with the drone, which is not easily done over remote and rugged terrain.
This test flight suggests new regulations for BVLOS commercial drone applications ultimately will be approved, which will set off a tsunami of utility UAV applications when it happens. I have rented helicopters to inspect ROW, and it is expensive. Drones will reduce those costs substantially, and they are a lot safer for the utility personnel doing the fly-over.
Let’s begin pushing harder for more flexibility. We need BVLOS-capable UAVs. It would be a win-win for regulators and utilities alike. After all, everyone’s goal is securing a more reliable power grid while improving safety and reducing costs. Flying robots offer the opportunity for that type of technology to take off.
Alien spacecraft are strange. If decades of popular culture, eye-witness reports, and conspiracies are to be believed, most extraterrestrial whips are flying saucers. There is a dome on top and some landing gear below. There are pictures. The most famous may be the one above the words “I Want To Believe.”
These traditional UFOs clearly work in different ways than human aircraft. Though mankind has fiddled with saucer-shaped planes and rockets in the past, we’ve never succeeded at making them work. We don’t know how to do that within the bounds of physics. No, this doesn’t mean that flying saucers aren’t real. It simply means that they don’t make sense within a model of physics we’ve created. That said, neither does interstellar travel. So consistency, at least, is not a problem.
A lot of genuine scientific inquiry has gone into explaining the physics of flying saucers and other unidentified flying objects. Famously, William Markowitz made the case that UFO reports must be wrong in a 1967 article in Science. “Some people claim that nothing is impossible,” he wrote. “This is not so. The laws of mathematics and physics, if accepted, do provide limitations on what can be done.”
Markowitz detailed not only the difficulties of propelling a spacecraft through interstellar space, but also of gently landing and taking off again on the Earth’s surface, as UFOs are reported to do.
If an extraterrestrial spacecraft is to land nondestructively and then lift off it must be able to develop a thrust slightly less than its weight on landing, and twice its weight for an acceleration of 1g of lift-off. This requirement forms a critical test for comparing UFO reports with physical theory. The published reports generally describe objects about 5 to 100 meters in diameter, which land and lift off without the use of launching pads and gantries. No similarity to the giant undertaking of a launching from Cape Kennedy has ever been reported. If nuclear energy is used to generate thrust, then searing of the ground from temperatures of 85,000 degrees C should result, and nuclear decay products equivalent in quantity to those produced by the detonation of an atomic bomb should be detected. This has not happened.
The flying saucer is the UFO that rules our imaginations.
If you want to deny physics, fine, he concludes, just don’t pretend that’s not what you’re doing.
We can reconcile UFO reports with extraterrestrial control by assigning various magic properties to extraterrestrial beings. These include “teleportation” (the instantaneous movement of material bodies between planets and stars), the creation of “force-fields” to drive space ships, and propulsion without reaction. The last of these would permit a man to lift himself by his bootstraps. Anyone who wishes is free to accept such magic properties, but I cannot.
Despite this and many other scientific denouncements of the UFO, efforts to recreate its properties have been numerous. For decades, great scientific minds and research organizations have funnelled money and time into the holy grail of UFO technology — a round, hovering aircraft without moving parts or fuel. No major discoveries have, so far, resulted.
A little bit of research might have saved the effort. The whole concept of the flying saucer, as it turns out, was an accident — a clerical error. The flying saucer entered the public imagination thanks to a 1947 Chicago Sun article with the headline, “Supersonic Flying Saucers Sighted By Idaho Pilot.” The pilot, Kenneth Arnold, reported seeing nine shiny UFOs from his plane, traveling an estimated 1,200 miles per hour.
Kenneth Arnold points to a drawing of the UFO he saw.
Here’s the thing, though. Arnold never described them as saucer-shaped. He said they flew erratically, ”like a saucer if you skip it across the water.” Their shape was more like a boomerang or crescent. The headline-writer got it wrong, but it was too late to take it back. The news was all over the country, and all of a sudden people were spotting flying saucers all over the place.
Today most experts suspect Arnold had seen a flock of birds, and a trick of the eye made him overestimate their distance from him, and therefore their size and speed. But the idea of the flying saucer has stuck. Humankind will not rest until it builds the UFO of our fantasies.

BREAKING: Army scientists successfully ' teleport ' Soldiers
BREAKING: Army scientists successfully ' teleport ' Soldiers
NATICK, Mass. (April 1, 2016)-- Army scientists have successfully "teleported" a fully equipped squad from a Massachusetts research and development facility to a training area in Germany, the Natick Soldier Systems Center (NSSC) announced today.
The nine human research volunteers, fresh out of Advanced Individual Training, were participating in experiments in the Doriot Climatic Chambers at NSSC when they disappeared and moments later materialized at the Grafenwoehr Training Area, completely unharmed. The chambers are capable of replicating any climate or weather in the world but have never before been used in this manner.
Teleportation, made famous in the "Star Trek" television series and movies, had been -- until what the Army is calling the "Natick incident" -- a hypothetical way of moving objects from place to place. American writer Charles Fort is reported to have coined the word in 1931.
Officials at Natick were elated by the event, which promises to one day revolutionize the way that American troops and equipment are transported around the globe. It also could ultimately make overseas bases obsolete as forces are instead moved from U.S. soil to remote trouble spots in the blink of an eye.
"No one is more impressed by this than I am," said Benjamin Storm, who manages the 61-year-old climatic chambers at Natick. "One moment, I was chatting with the young Soldiers, and the next, they all vanished into thin air."
The Soldiers were dressed in combat gear for the revolutionary experiment and being monitored by Storm and his colleagues when they were sent from one continent to the other. Still photographs of the event were captured in the chambers and have been released by the Army.
After thorough medical examinations at an Army hospital, they were flown back to the U.S. and returned to duty at Natick.
"It's one thing to see Captain Kirk or Mr. Spock do it at the movies, but it's another to have it happen to you in real life," said Pvt. Kelley McCoy, one of the teleported Soldiers. "I felt a little tingling and the next thing you know, I'm in Bavaria. I always wanted to visit Europe, but I figured that I'd go by plane."
Storm and other Natick researchers are now poring over mountains of data from the development in hopes of replicating it. Meanwhile, the Army quickly established a Teleportation Study Task Force, which will be based at Natick. Leading scientists from private industry and academia worldwide are converging on the chambers to lend whatever assistance they can.
According to Storm, a device not unlike the "flux capacitor" seen in the "Back to the Future" movie series was employed during the experiment. This led to immediate speculation that the Army was also working on time travel, but time travel requirements of generating 1.21 gigawatts is no trivial feat.
"We're only concerned with place, not time," said Storm, a twinkle in his eye. "This development could change the entire course of human history."
The Task Force expects to report its initial findings by April 1, 2017.

UFOs and Nukes Film to be Released: Robert Hastings’ Documentary Available at Vimeo On Demand
UFOs and Nukes Film to be Released: Robert Hastings’ Documentary Available at Vimeo On Demand
The reality of UFO incursions at American nuclear weapons facilities has been convincingly established. Hundreds of U.S. military veterans now openly discuss these ominous incidents and thousands of declassified government documents affirm their assertions.
Over the past four decades, I have interviewed more than 150 of those veterans regarding their involvement in one case or another. On September 27, 2010, CNN live-streamed my UFOs and Nukes press conference in Washington D.C. during which former U.S. Air Force missileers described occasions when several ICBMs mysteriously malfunctioned moments after a disc-shaped craft was observed hovering near their underground launch silos.
Robert Hastings The UFO Chronicles 4-2-16
My documentary film, UFOs and Nukes: The Secret Link Revealed, will be available at Vimeo On Demand beginning on April 10, 2016. Unlike many of the UFO “documentaries” found on network television nowadays, which contain far more speculation than fact, this film rigorously examines the officially-still-hidden history of UFO activity at nuclear weapons laboratories, test areas, storage depots and missile sites—using authenticated files and the testimony of vetted military eyewitnesses.
The evidence presented makes clear that humans’ deadliest weapons have been—ever since their development and use during World War II—under intense scrutiny by still-unidentified observers. Significantly, documents smuggled out of Russia in the 1990s confirm that Soviet nukes were also the focus of UFO interest during the Cold War era. More recently, U.S. Air Force personnel have alleged a UFO involvement in one large-scale missile-disruption incident in October 2010. In short, the situation is still unfolding.
The purpose of this film is public education. Someone possessing tremendously advanced technology has monitored and even tampered with American and Russian nuclear weapons for decades. My view is that UFOs are piloted by beings from another world. Regardless, these stunning, nearly unbelievable developments must not be kept secret by a handful of government and military officials. We all have a right to know the facts.

TRIANGULAR UFO spotted over Myanmar temples ! March 2016
TRIANGULAR UFO spotted over Myanmar temples ! March 2016
March 2016 - Myanmar, Burma. People filmed mysterious triangular UFO with glowing lights hovering over temple during several minutes.

Black triangles are a class of unidentified flying objects, or UFOs, with certain common features which have reportedly been observed during the 20th and 21st centuries. Media reports of black triangles originally came from the United States and United Kingdom.
Reports generally describe this class of UFOs as large, silent, black triangular objects hovering or slowly cruising at low altitudes over cities and highways. Sightings usually take place at night. These objects are often described as having pulsing colored lights that appear at each corner of the triangle.
Black triangle UFOs have been reported to be visible to radar, as was the case with the famous Belgian UFO wave. During these incidents, two Belgian F-16s attempted to intercept the objects (getting a successful missile lock at two occasions) only to be outmaneuvered; a key conclusion of the Project Condign report was that no attempt should be made on the part of civilian or RAF Air Defence aircraft to outmaneuver these objects except to place them astern to mitigate the risk of collision.
The reports state : "Occasionally and perhaps exceptionally, it seems that a field with, as yet, undetermined characteristics, can exist between certain charged buoyant objects in loose formation, such that, depending on the viewing aspect, the intervening space between them forms an area (viewed as a shape, often triangular) from which the reflection of light does not occur. This is a key finding in the attribution of what have frequently been reported as black 'craft,' often triangular and even up to hundreds of feet in length." These plasma formations also have the effect through "magnetic, electric or electromagnetic (or even unknown field), appears to emanate from some of the buoyant charged masses. Local fields of this type have been medically proven to cause responses in the temporal lobes of the human brain.
Recently un-redacted sections of the report state that Russian, Former Soviet Republics, and Chinese authorities have made a co-ordinated effort to understand the UAP topic and that Russian investigators have measured (or at least detected) 'fields' which are reported to have caused human effects when they are located close to the phenomena. According to the Ministry of Defence researchers, Russian scientists have connected their UAP work with plasmas and the wider potential use of plasmas and may have done "considerably more work (than is evident from open sources)" on military applications, for example using UAP-type radiated fields to affect humans, and the possibility of producing and launching plasmas as decoys.

Disc-shaped UFO over Romsdalen Valley - NORWAY ! March 2016

The Hessdalen Mystery :
The Hessdalen lights are unexplained nocturnal lights observed in a 7.5-mile-long (12 km) Hessdalen valley in rural central Norway. The Hessdalen lights are of unknown origin. They appear at night, and seem to float through and above the valley. They are usually bright white, yellow, or red and can appear above and below the horizon. The duration of the phenomenon may be from a few seconds to longer than an hour. Sometimes the lights move with enormous speed, and at other times, seem to slowly sway back and forth. On yet other occasions, they hover mid‑air. Some hypothesise that the light is ionised iron dust.
Unusual lights have been reported in the region since at least the 1930s. Especially high activity occurred between December 1981 and mid-1984, at which point the lights were being observed 15–20 times per week, which attracted many overnight tourists. As of 2010, the lights were observed 10–20 times per year.
Since 1983, there has been ongoing scientific research often nicknamed "Project Hessdalen", initiated by UFO-Norge and UFO-Sweden. The project was active as field investigations during 1983–1985. A group of students, engineers, and journalists collaborated as "The Triangle Project" in 1997–1998 and recorded the lights in a pyramid shape that bounced up and down. In 1998, the Hessdalen Automatic Measurement Station (Hessdalen AMS) was built in the valley and registers and records the appearance of lights.
Later, the EMBLA programme was initiated. It brings together established scientists and students into researching these lights. Leading research institutions are Østfold University College (Norway) and the Italian National Research Council.
Despite the ongoing research, there is no convincing explanation for the phenomenon. However, there are numerous working hypotheses.
1) One possible explanation attributes the phenomenon to an incompletely understood combustion involving hydrogen, oxygen, and sodium, and occurs in Hessdalen because of the large deposits of scandium there.
2) One recent hypothesis suggests that the lights are formed by a cluster of macroscopic Coulomb crystals in a plasma produced by the ionization of air and dust by alpha particles during radon decay in the dusty atmosphere. Several physical properties including oscillation, geometric structure, and light spectrum, observed in the Hessdalen lights (HL) can be explained through a dust plasma model. Radon decay produces alpha particles (responsible by helium emissions in HL spectrum) and radioactive elements such as polonium. In 2004, Teodorani showed an occurrence where a higher level of radioactivity on rocks was detected near the area where a large light ball was reported. Computer simulations show that dust immersed in ionized gas can organize itself into double helixes like some of occurrences of the Hessdalen lights; dusty plasmas may also form in this structure.
3) Another hypothesis explains HL as a product of piezoelectricity generated under specific rock strains (Takaki and Ikeya, 1998) because many crystal rocks include quartz grains which produce an intense charge density. In a 2011 paper, based on the dusty plasma theory of HL, it is suggested that piezoelectricity of quartz cannot explain a peculiar property assumed by the HL phenomenon – the presence of geometrical structures in its center. Paiva and Taft have shown a mechanism of light ball cluster formation in Hessdalen lights by the nonlinear interaction of ion-acoustic and dusty-acoustic waves with low frequency geoelectromagnetic waves in dusty plasmas. The theoretical model shows that the velocity of ejected light balls by HL cluster is about 10,000 m s−1 in a good agreement with the observed velocity of some ejected light balls, which is estimated as 20,000 m s−1. Why is the ejected ball always green-colored? Ejection of small green light ball from HL is due to radiation pressure produced by the interaction between very low frequency electromagnetic waves (VLF) and atmospheric ions (present in the central white-colored ball) through ion-acoustic waves (IAW). Paiva and Taft presented a model for resolving the apparently contradictory spectrum observed in HL phenomenon. Thus, its nearly flat spectrum on the top with steep sides is due to the effect of optical thickness on the bremsstrahlung spectrum. At low frequencies self-absorption modifies the spectrum to follow the Rayleigh–Jeans part of the blackbody curve. This spectrum is typical of dense ionized gas. Additionally, the spectrum produced in the thermal bremsstrahlung process is flat up to a cutoff frequency, ν, and falls off exponentially at higher frequencies. This sequence of events forms the typical spectrum of HL phenomenon when the atmosphere is clear, with no fog. According to the model, spatial color distribution of luminous balls commonly observed in HL phenomenon are produced by electrons accelerated by electric fields during rapid fracture of piezoelectric rocks under the ground.
There have been some sightings positively identified as misperceptions of astronomical bodies, aircraft, car headlights, and mirages.
The aim of science, as is generally accepted today, is to organize knowledge gleaned from what we observe in nature. We take what we observe, and we structure it by using testable explanations, which thereby help us make future predictions about new things we may eventually learn about our universe. Hence, with regard to our study of nature and the cosmos, a good question that comes to mind from time to time is this one: What criteria would define a subject that science does not seek to address?
When we ask what things science doesn’taim to study in our broader quest for knowledge, should that necessarily mean that these kinds of things, esoteric though they may seem, cannot be “known” or studied at all? This has long been among the questions that philosophers have asked; after all, in the modern sense of the study of things around us, such issues surrounding concepts that fall “beyond” the scope of the physical sciences generally are left out altogether, if not left to the philosophers among us.
One might argue that, when it comes to the study of the unexplained, one way of seeking to understand certain “paranormal” subjects would be to subject them to some degree of logical philosophical thought, particularly in areas where science has either dismissed them (i.e. these aforementioned subjects that science does not address), or where there is not enough physical data that a proper scientific assessment can be rendered.
This brings us to epistemology, which, defined roughly, involves the “theory of knowledge”, or study of how we know what we know (more broadly, it is an assessment of what knowledge is, how it is acquired, and the study of limitations on how knowledge pertinent to a particular subject can be acquired). Recently, Michael, a reader and listener of my weekly podcast, wrote to me with a question about epistemology, and how our philosophical theories of knowledge might relate to the study of the unexplained.
Michael writes, and takes us “down the rabbit hole”, thusly:
What I would like to get your opinion on is a matter of epistemology, and how one who is exposed to such a myriad of ideas and thoughts, often times conflicting ones, can come to know the truth. I reject rigid relativism and subjectivism in favor that there is objective truth. It’s quite possible for there to be objective truth and due to our human limitations we simply cannot know or ever be certain (the skeptics position), but one cannot assume that because something is yet to be verified or unverifiable empirically it is untrue. I find the latter to be an irrational position, but therein lies the problem. What method or means can we rely on outside of sensory experience to give us truth?
Without the dogmatism that science holds today, the ancients may have trusted some other means of truth finding that we have either dismissed or lost. You might think this other method would need some verification process like science has with experimentation, but isn’t that just a scientific bias creeping through? True things, especially events, can certainly be unique instances and unrepeatable. What then is to be said of truth dependent on verification and verified by what means? Divorcing empiricism and verification from truth can obviously lead to a number of errors, so it’s unwise to dismiss these methods entirely and in all cases.
What I am proposing is that outside the realm of things which lend themselves to be subject to science, there is truth to be realized and possibly a way to arrive at it. I know you’ve addressed this kind of issue a number of times, but I think it is worth reiterating and revisiting from time to time because it really underpins nearly all conspiracy and paranormal related topics.
Michael’s discussion of epistemology here is esoteric indeed by today’s standards (and especially as it relates to the “popular” study of the unexplained). Deep though it is, his observations, I feel, may bear fruit for those patients enough to pose similar contemplation; they also mirror, in many ways, my own notions and perceptions about certain alleged “paranormal” phenomenon.
This is particularly the case with UFOs, and I feel that this subject, while representative of something that is also a very tangible mystery, has similarly been deemed “outside the area of questions that science seeks to answer”, as physicists like Stephen Hawking might phrase it.
For me, such matters that science will not (or cannot, at present) address likely should enter the realm of philosophy. The problem, however, is that in many cases, the modern scientist views philosophy as being “dead”, and having not kept up with the progress of science, especially since the time Einstein arrived on the scene with his revolutionary theory of general relativity. Therefore, if philosophy is dead in the minds of some scientists, then those things relegated to philosophy are thus unimportant (or “dead”, as it were) as well.
Hey, even Einstein enjoyed reading the philosophy of Kant.
This ongoing debate over which things are “dead” or otherwise unimportant in relation to the schism between science and philosophy is an interesting logical conundrum unto itself, in my view. However, as far as Michael’s line of thought expressed in his question above, in which things resting “outside of science” may still be knowable in some manner, I do believe that part of understanding this problem involves understanding the nature of individual specialization.
To return to Hawking again, the great physicist has often said that serious advances in the sciences are now relegated to specialists in the field, unlike the old days when many “untrained” individuals who proceeded logically could render new discoveries. Here, I would argue instead that the latter is actually still the case as well, although the specialization Hawking refers to allows new kinds of discoveries, as a result of the deep thought, scientific training, and complex systems that are employed. Such things might have been “knowable” much earlier, had the tools and practices that allow for their study today already been in place at an earlier time. This does not mean, however, that all things are “unknowable” without the use of such tools, training, and practice that the modern specialist employs. Indeed, I think the right non-specialist, looking at the right subject, may indeed stumble onto discoveries in the everyday that are scientifically meaningful.
As an interesting parallel, Hawking’s own specialization illustrates, at times, some of his own logical shortcomings, such as in cases where he begins to apply his thoughts and perspectives to other fields of interest beyond his “specialty” in the area of physics. Hawking, for instance, while not an A.I. researcher himself, seems pretty convinced that the creation of artificial intelligence would be a bad thing for humanity.
Elsewhere, his remarks about philosophy itself have generally been quite dismissive (as have his statements pertaining to UFOs, which we’ll return to in a moment). One could argue that Hawking does not possess the required “specialization” to be able to recognize the shortcomings of his own thought processes, as evidenced not only by his “philosophy is dead” remarks, but also by his observations about philosopher Ludwig Wittgenstein’s assessment of language being “the only subject left for philosophy”, as related by Hawking in the final pages of A Brief History of Time. (Personally, I am amazed that there aren’t far more philosophers who have come along and challenged Hawking’s views on Wittgenstein, or A.I., or UFOs, or philosophy in general… but I digress).
I feel that discerning those things which science deems “unknowable” must require a bit more than specialization, and in fact, at times may also require multi-disciplinary efforts. For example, putting on our physicist or astronomy cap, we may look out into space for answers about things like UFOs, but would doing so really help us find any more answers than we have already managed to glean thus far? Furthermore, are there other areas of study that might help us solve the problem too, from “the ground up”, so to speak?
An interesting observation to be made has to do with the attitudes among those studying UFOs — the scientists, and believers alike — which will typically reveal one simple reality: that both “approaches” to study are actually quite dogmatic, and representative of belief-based biases that are built around, or perhaps grow from within, what are obviously social movements.
To put it another way, belief in an “alien” reality underlying UFOs is as much a social movement as modern skepticism and its “I think, therefore it is not!” approach. This is because those of similar mind on a subject will likely gather together, and when allowed to run to their illogical extremes, run the unfortunate risk of producing a very dogmatic, faith-based approach to the study of a given subject. At its worst, this bears promise for a lack of objectivity, and an approach that is generally unscientific, despite any attempts to the contrary.
Philip Klass, widely considered an “arch debunker” of UFOs, and at times even unscientifically so
Thus, a range of new phenomena begin to emerge. Within the skeptic camp, the result has often been a move toward more “debunking” by individuals whose minds are already made up about the subjects they study at the outset of their “investigations”. This, rather famously, led sociologist and skeptic Marcello Truzzi to leave the Committee for Scientific Investigation of Claims of the Paranormal (CSICOP, now known as CSI) shortly after it was formed in 1976, due to the uncompromising stances of his fellow members. On the other side of the fence, from within the ranks of the “believer” camp, we find more and more reformed UFO advocates and “born again skeptics”, as I like to call them, who (like myself) have had to accept a vast change in our attitudes and perception about so-called UFO research, after spending many years of (frustrating) examination of data that, often times, is spurious at best.
That’s not to say that either side — belief (or advocacy, as some may prefer), or skepticism — is the way to absolute truth. I actually prefer a more agnostic, middle-of-the-road stance, in an effort not to be dismissive of good evidence that may be put forth by either position. However, straying too far in one direction or the other often leads to bias, just as well.
Thus, while making a good case for what a UFO is (or is not) remains difficult, we could certainly employ science of sociology to make a strong case that belief systems can, and have influenced (perhaps negatively) the serious attempts at applying science to certain subjects. In this case, the subject would be UFOs, and although this observation is fundamental, it is my belief that it is important, on a much broader scale, and not just in terms of sociological studies, but in applying a bit of philosophical logic to the breakdown between people’s thoughts and attitudes. In other words, in the epistemological sense that Michael had suggested earlier, we’re asking “how we know what we think we know.”
This is the great role of philosophy: while some will continue to proclaim that it is a “dead” practice, its proponents and practitioners view it as an important system of “checks and balances”, that if not providing new discoveries itself, might at least help guide future scientific inquiry in positive ways.
Indeed, perhaps our predicament with things “outside” science has more to do with understanding why those things are deemed unknowable through science; and asking “why” is the fundamental job of the philosopher.
Admitting you’re active in the field of UFO research, in all likelihood, will not serve you well as a pickup line when visiting a bar. After all, anytime a subject like alien abduction lands on the table during a conversation with someone you’re just getting to know, you’re bound to get a few strange looks… and if you’re lucky, you might even get a few strange stories, also.
To put it simply, I got lucky last night. But before I have to drag your mind back out of the gutter, I should make it clear what I mean: I was lucky enough to be able to share a conversation with someone who, rather than getting squeamish when the conversation drifted to the subject of alien abduction, responded by calmly saying that, “oh yeah, well that happened to a family member of mine.” The details that followed were incredibly interesting… and perhaps even a bit unsettling.
The conversation took place during a break between sets at a pub I visit once a week near the North Carolina/Georgia border, where my acoustic group is the house band on Wednesday evenings. My friend Amy had stopped in to watch us play, and since she was waiting for a few of her friends to arrive, I started chatting with her at the bar after she came over and told me “she had seen a wolf” on her way into town earlier that evening.
“A wolf,” I said, admitting a bit of skepticism. “Are you sure that wasn’t a coyote?”
She argued that coyotes she had seen were always more scrawny and physically smaller, and soon, a couple of the locals had chimed in with information about wildlife programs where Timber Wolves had been reintroduced in certain areas throughout the region. From this point, the conversation went on to sightings of weird or unusual animals, and before long, a full-on discussion of the unexplained had been initiated. When I admitted my primary area of interest dealt with UFOs, Amy told me something I had hardly expected.
“Well, I believe there’s evidence for that sort of thing. My dad’s mother actually said she was abducted by a UFO back in the 1970s.”
“Oh really?” I replied with genuine interest, though I’ve grown accustomed to people telling these kinds of stories by now.
“Yeah, but they say she’s a little crazy. And the weird thing about it was that she said that when they took her on board, they did all these tests on her… but they weren’t aliens or anything,” Amy told me, grasping for words a bit. “She said they were people on board that thing.”
“Wait, you said people? You meanhumans?”
“That’s right,” Amy said. “She lives in Florida now, but if she’s ever in town, I’ll try and bring her by to speak to you.”
“I may just want to speak to her before then, if it could be arranged!” I told her. While there are a plethora of interesting reports of alleged alien abduction, the more seldom reports where people have claimed that there is a human connection to the entire UFO mystery have always intrigued me. Such reports are often connected with stories of underground bases, secret military projects, and a number of other conspiracy theories; but also of interest are studies that have emerged over the years which seem to suggest altered states of consciousness might be capable of inducing strong hallucinatory experiences where an individual might misinterpret things about their environment (such as with the research of Dr. Rick Strassman, outlined in his bookDMT: The Spirit Molecule). Could it be even a remote possibility that some accounts of “alien abduction” involve something far more terrestrial going on, as perceived by abductees who filter their experience through the distortions some kind of altered state might present? Furthermore, what could be the reason for such an altered state (which could lend itself to the reasons for “dreamlike” experiences reported by many abductees)? Is there a chance they could be the result of some variety of hallucinagens that victims of abduction scenarios might be introduced to in some way?
While this is all mere speculation (and stemming from a conversation this author had with a friend at the pub), it does remind me of the countless other experiences reported by abductees that seem to bear these sorts of characteristics. What could be the real story behind the abduction phenomenon, and might certain aspects of the mystery remain far closer to home than most of us are willing to accept or realize otherwise?
What’s happening at the Indira Gandhi International Airport in New Delhi? Specifically, why are so many UFOs being reported there? This week, reports of a fish-shaped UFO over the airport prompted calls to the government security force responsible for the facility to deal with it. What was it and why is this airport attracting so many UFOs?
According to Indian media, a member of the Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) working in an airport watchtower issued an alarm on March 30th after seeing an unidentified flying object over the apron area where airplanes are parked for boarding and unloading.
It looked like a dark-colored balloon floating above the apron area.
Specifically, a fish-shaped object. CISF is required to notify both the Indian Air Force and National Security Guards before taking action against UFOs. A so-called “quick-response” team was dispatched to “shoot down” the fish-shaped UFO, but it was gone by the time they arrived and nothing more appeared on air traffic control radar over that area or adjoining aprons.
Shoot it down? Is security at the Indira Gandhi International Airport a little jumpy? Well, CIFS Director General Surender Singh announced at the organization’s last big meeting that 62 UFO sightings were reported at the airport in a four month period. Most airports are still on alert because of the Brussels bombings and the Indian media said that there were a number of recent hoax reports at the airport. However, Indian media also points out that Delhi police have been authorized since January to …
… shoot down any unacknowledged flying device in the capital’s sky, especially in and around the airport, be they paragliders, drones, hot air balloons or other machines.
Not the “fish-shaped” UFO seen over the New Delhi airport
Yes, it was a “fish-shaped” floating object. That sounds like it might be a balloon, except a balloon would show up on radar, wouldn’t it? Why does this particular airport have so many unresolved UFO reports? Does New Delhi really lead the world in paragliders, drones, hot air balloons or other hard-but-not-impossible-to-identify flying objects? Why is it so difficult for this particular airport to patrol its perimeter when so many other busy airports in heavily populated metropolitan areas seem to be able to do it effectively and without shooting down UFOs?
Or is something else happening at the Indira Gandhi International Airport? Keep watching.
In a December 2013 article here at Mysterious Universe titled “Arnold’s Flying Saucers: Were They Saucers at All? Micah Hanks wrote: “Despite the popularity this subject would garner in those golden years after the War, perhaps there is no early UFO incident that has proven to be quite as influential as that of Kenneth Arnold, a civilian pilot who spotted an entire fleet of strange aircraft while flying over Washington state in June of 1947. The strange craft that Arnold observed would spark a flame that grew like wildfire, eventually forming the modern UFO phenomenon, and at the center of it all was the curious staple that became known as the flying saucer.”
Arnold’s encounter occurred on June 24, 1947, around twenty to twenty-five miles from Mt. Rainier, in the Cascade Mountains. Precisely what Arnold saw is something that Ufologists have pondered on for decades. They will likely continue to do so for decades, too. The Arnold affair has become such a staple part of the UFO controversy that, for many, it’s right up there with the Roswell case. However, I’m not here, today, to discuss the merits of the case. Rather, I’m going to share with you a bit of notable data that might provide corroboration for Arnold and his experience.
The story revolves around the testimony of a man named Fred Johnson. He was a prospector who may have seen the very same objects encountered by Arnold. Both military intelligence and the FBI took an interest in what Johnson had to say. It should be noted that the FBI has chosen to black-out Johnson’s name on its paperwork; however, that the military has not means we know who the man was.
“Fred Johnson reported without consulting any records that on June 24, 1947, while prospecting at a point in the Cascade Mountains approximately five thousand feet from sea level, during the afternoon he noticed a reflection, looked up, and saw a disc proceeding in a southeasterly direction. Immediately upon sighting this object he placed his telescope to his eye and observed the disc for approximately forty-five to sixty seconds.”
We’re then told that Johnson “…remarked that it is possible for him to pick up an object at a distance of ten miles with his telescope. At the time the disc was sighted by Mr. Johnson it was banking in the sun, and he observed five or six similar objects but only concentrated on one. He related that they did not fly in any particular formation and that he would estimate their height to be about one thousand feet from where he was standing. He said the object was about thirty feet in diameter and appeared to have a tail. It made no noise.
“According to Johnson he remained in the vicinity of the Cascades for several days and then returned to Portland and noted an article in the local paper which stated in effect that a man in Boise, Idaho, had sighted a similar object but that authorities had disclaimed any knowledge of such an object. He said he communicated with the Army for the sole purpose of attempting to add credence to the story furnished by the man in Boise.”
And, finally, we have this: “Johnson also related that on the occasion of his sighting the objects on June 24, 1947 he had in his possession a combination compass and watch. He noted particularly that immediately before he sighted the disc the compass acted very peculiar, the hand waving from one side to the other, but that this condition corrected itself immediately after the discs had passed out of sight. Informant appeared to be a very reliable individual who advised that he had been a prospector in the states of Montana, Washington and Oregon for the past forty years.”
Scientists have devised a method to “cloak,” or hide, the Earth from potentially hostile advanced alien civilizations. According to scientists, we could cloak or hide the Earth from hostile alien planet hunters seeking potentially habitable planets by firing laser beams into outer space to disrupt efforts by extraterrestrial astronomers to detect signals that betray our planet’s presence as it orbits the Sun in the habitable zone.
The proposal by Professor David Kipping and and his graduate student Alex Teachey, two astronomers at Columbia University in New York, comes in response to fears that just as astronomers on Earth are scanning the skies in search of potentially habitable exoplanets, technologically advanced alien civilizations located near distant stars may also be searching our solar system for potentially habitable planets.
Prominent scientists, such as the astrophysicist Stephen Hawking, have voiced concern about the potential dangers of our world being discovered by more advanced alien civilizations. A hostile, advanced extraterrestrial civilization that discovers us could decide to invade and take over our world. Even if an alien civilization that discovers our world “comes in peace,” first contact could be very risky because they could introduce deadly diseases that humans on Earth have no defenses against and thus expose humanity to the risk of extinction.
According to Kipping and Teachey, we could make our world invisible and effectively prevent it from being detected by advanced and possibly hostile alien races searching for potentially habitable planets by beaming a laser into space during the periods that Earth is transiting or passing in front of the Sun.
The laser would hide our planet from alien astronomers by disguising the dimming of the Sun’s light — as seen from the perspective of the observing civilization — each time Earth passes in front of the Sun. Beaming a laser with a sufficient amount of power into space could thus render Earth invisible to potential alien invaders.
The “cloaking” concept being proposed by scientists is based on the principle underlying the transit method that human astronomers have used successfully to detect exoplanets orbiting distant stars. The method involves detecting dips in the brightness of the parent star as the orbiting planet passes in front of it.
Analysis of the patterns of dips or dimming of a distant star could give astronomers information about characteristics, such as size and density, of the celestial body passing in front of the star.

“To make it look like the planet is not there at all, you’ve got to get rid of that dip. You’ve got to fill in the missing starlight.”
NASA’s Kepler Space Telescope has used the transit method to detect hundreds of planets orbiting other distant stars in our galaxy. The scientists reasoned that alien astronomers observing our solar system from a distant star in our galaxy would likely use the same method to search for potentially habitable exoplanets.
According to Kipping and Teachey, blasting laser beams into space at the time Earth is passing in front of the Sun compensates for dips in the brightness of the Sun when the Earth passes in front of it. Thus, an alien planet hunter measuring changes in solar brightness would not notice any dips.
The researchers also noted that the concept is implementable because not much energy is needed to “cloak” our planet. Dips or dimming of the Sun’s light could be masked by emitting 30 MW laser continuously for 10 hours once a year at the time the Earth is passing in front of the Sun.
Alien invasion fleet hovers over Earth city. [Image via Shutterstock]Kipping explained that he thought of the idea after reports about the star KIC 8462852 that was found in 2015 to exhibit an anomalous dimming pattern which some speculated could be due to an “alien megastructure” orbiting the star.
The reports inspired Kipping to consider how an advanced civilization could deliberately alter transit signals it sends out to space to deceive alien astronomers attempting to observe the planet from a distant star.
“There is an ongoing debate as to whether we should advertise ourselves or hide from advanced civilizations potentially living on planets elsewhere in the Galaxy,” Kipping said. “Our work offers humanity a choice, at least for transit events, and we should think about what we want to do.”
The researchers noted there are other ways that an intelligent civilization could hide its world from alien observers. Instead of wiping out the transit signals of its planet entirely, a civilization could distort it. The options include deliberately erasing the signals of life that the planet sends out to space.
For instance, we could emit a laser with a power of only 160 KW into space to cloak atmospheric signatures — such as oxygen — that alien astrobiologists could interpret as signalling presence of biological life on Earth.
Kipping and Teachey emphasized that their proposed “cloaking” technique is so simple that “we could build it this next week if we wanted to.”
President Dwight Eisenhower held a secret meeting with extraterrestrial visitors during the early hours of February 21, 1954, while on a “vacation” to Palm Springs in California, according to UFO and alien conspiracy theorists.
He went “missing” after he was whisked away secretly to Edwards Air Force Base and was not seen until he appeared at a church service in Los Angeles the next Sunday morning.
The official explanation of his mysterious “disappearance” was that he had to undergo an emergency dental surgery.
The abrupt disappearance of the president was so unusual that it fueled speculation about an illness or death in the media. The speculation became so intense that the rumors had to be dispelled by the president’s press secretary, James Haggerty, who told incredulous reporters at a press conference that Eisenhower had damaged a tooth cap while eating fried chicken and had to undergo emergency surgery.
An artist’s representation of Grey aliens who allegedly signed a treaty with the Eisenhower administration [Image via Shutterstock]A local dentist was later presented to reporters who claimed he had treated Eisenhower.
But strange rumors began spreading following information leaked by well-placed sources. The rumors alleged that the local dentist was used to provide Eisenhower with a cover story while he rendezvoused secretly with the extraterrestrial visitors at the Edwards Air Force Base.
Significantly, there are no records at the Eisenhower Library — which reportedly has extensive records related to Eisenhower’s health — that he ever underwent dental surgery in February 1954, according to UFO researcher William Moore.
Eisenhower thus became the first American president to have direct contact with extraterrestrials, according to conspiracy theorists. The meeting took place at Edwards Air Force Base in southern California during the early hours of February 21 in 1954. It was the first in a series of meetings that culminated in the signing of a treaty between the U.S. government and an extraterrestrial race called the Greys.
The First Contact meeting, as it is termed in UFO conspiracy theory circles, involved some intrigue. Eisenhower’s secret First Contact meeting on February 21, 1954, is believed to have been with the Nordic aliens, also known as Pleiadian aliens, an advanced extraterrestrial race from the Pleiades star cluster with distinctive Nordic appearance, such as fair hair, blue eyes, and white skin.
The two sides were unable to reach an agreement on the night of the First Contact, and the Greys took advantage of the failure by offering more favorable terms. The offer by the Greys allegedly led to the first treaty between humans and an extraterrestrial race.
According to UFO conspiracy theorists, several pieces of circumstantial evidence add up to support claims that the Eisenhower administration held “First Contact” meetings with extraterrestrial beings. The first circumstantial evidence was the awkward manner in which Eisenhower “disappeared” during the night of February 20-21 in the midst of an unscheduled winter vacation in Palm Springs, California, and the clumsy efforts by officials to explain his disappearance.
One of the first eyewitness testimonies came from Gerald Light, a writer and leading member of the community dedicated to metaphysical research. A letter circulated widely in the UFO and alien conspiracy community, dated April 16, 1954, is alleged to have been written by Gerald Light to Meade Layne, Director of Borderland Sciences Research Foundation. In the letter (see copy here), Light allegedly claimed to have been one of a group of community leaders who was present at the First Contact meeting with extraterrestrials at Edwards Air Force Base.
The group of “community leaders” included Edwin Nourse, President’s Truman’s chief economic adviser, Cardinal James Francis MacIntyre, head of the Catholic Church in Los Angeles at the time, and 80-year-old Franklin Winthrop Allen, a former reporter with Hearst Newspaper Group.
Light claimed in the letter he allegedly wrote to Layne that he recently returned from Muroc Airfield (now Edward Air Force Base). The letter contains a single reference to “Etherians” (presumed to be the aliens), and it includes a comment about “five separate and distinct types of aircraft being studied and handled by our Air Force officials — with the assistance and permission of the Etherians!
The aircraft are believed to be alien UFOs stored at the facility for reverse-engineering studies.
The letter gives a vivid description of the bewilderment, confusion, and panic among the officials present at the meeting. UFO conspiracy theorists claim that Light’s account reveals uncertainty about how to respond to the aliens and fears due to the Cold War that the aliens could turn to the Soviets if the Americans spurned them.
But it is claimed that Eisenhower finally decided to reject the proposals of the Nordic aliens he met at the First Contact meeting at the Edwards Air Force Base in February 1954, and his administration eventually signed a treaty with the Greys, who offered to transfer their technology exclusively to the United States.
Several whistle-blowers claimed to have seen documents signed at the meetings while others claimed they obtained information from inside sources. The different versions of what allegedly transpired at the First Contact meetings leaked by the whistle-blowers agree on certain major points but differ in specific details.
Grey aliens land in a flying saucer [Image via Shutterstock]One of the best-known whistle-blowers, William Cooper, a former Naval intelligence officer who allegedly had access to classified documents, claimed that the First Contact meeting at the Edward Air Force Base in February 1954 was the culmination of a series of events after astronomers discovered a fleet of huge UFOs approaching Earth in 1953. First mistaken for asteroids, they were later determined to be spaceships.
Alien radio signals were allegedly intercepted under Project Sigma just before the UFOs went into high orbit. Project Plato was launched to receive the aliens and hold talks.
But before the aliens approaching in a huge UFO fleet landed, a different alien race contacted the U.S government and warned against the first group of aliens. But talks with the first group failed after they demanded nuclear disarmament and warned that humanity was on a path to self-destruction. They proposed instead to help humans to develop along a peaceful path to spiritual fulfillment.
Because the primary interest of the U.S. government at the time was signing a treaty that gives access to advanced alien technology, the Eisenhower administration rejected the overtures from the first alien group — the Nordic aliens — during the First Contact meeting at the Edwards Air Base and agreed to sign a treaty with the second group — the Greys — during a subsequent meeting at the Holloman Air Force Base in New Mexico in 1954.
Elements of the sketchy account given by Cooper were allegedly confirmed independently by other whistle-blowers, including Charles Suggs, a former retired U.S. Marine Corps Sergeant, who claimed that his father, a senior naval officer, had attended the First Contact meeting with the Nordic aliens in February 1954.
John Lear, another independent whistle-blower, was a former air force pilot and the son of William Lear, who built the Lear Jet. Lear also confirmed that two alien races had been involved in the First Contact meetings.
Grey aliens conduct medical research experiments on human abductees (Image via Shutterstock]
Robert Dean, a former intelligence officer, described Nordic aliens as humanoids with Nordic features, and the Greys as tall humanoids up to 9 feet tall with pale white skin, large eyes, large head, and spindly limbs.
Greys allegedly originated from a star in the constellation of Orion. Other reports claimed they came from a planet in the star system Zeta Reticuli.
Details of the agreement with the Greys leaked by whistle-blowers include non-interference in human affairs in exchange for accommodation on Earth under conditions of secrecy. In return, they would furnish the U.S. government with advanced technology to help the country to stay ahead of enemy nations. The Greys also agreed they would not approach any other nation to make a treaty.
The Greys were housed in an underground facility in Dulce where Phil Schneider claimed he encountered them while working as a geological engineer employed by a private company contracted to build underground bases for the Greys.
Schneider revealed that part of the treaty agreement allowed the Greys to abduct a very limited number of humans for medical research and experiments. But the Greys proved untrustworthy and violated the agreement on abductions.
Most reports of UFO sightings and stories of abductions involved Greys freely violating the treaty with the government, according to UFO conspiracy theorists.
