What do aliens look like? The clue is in evolution

Speculating about what aliens look like has kept children, film producers and scientists amused for decades. If they exist, will extra terrestrials turn out to look similar to us, or might they take a form beyond our wildest imaginings? The answer to this question really depends on how we think evolution works at the deepest level.

Hollywood has given us its fair share of humanoid aliens over the years. Initially this was through necessity, as special effects required someone to clamber into a rubber suit. Ironically, now that CGI makes anything possible, aliens sometimes look even more human in order to help the cinema goer make an emotional connection with them – such as in James Cameron’s Avatar.

At present, the only life forms we can study are here on Earth. These had a single origin around 3.5 billion years ago, but this common ancestor gave rise to perhaps 20m living species of animals alone. But when animals first diversified some 542m or more years ago in the Cambrian “explosion”, there may have been an even greater diversity of fundamental body plans. Consider the five-eyed and trunked Opabina in the image above, or the stalked and almost flower-like Dinomischus alongside our own distant relative, thechordate Pikaia.

Rerunning the tape of life

In a famous thought experiment, biologist Stephen Jay Gouldasked what might happen if we were to rewind the “tape of life” and rerun it. Gould argued for the importance of chance in evolution: change one small thing early on, and the consequences magnify through time. In the version of history we know, Pikaia(imaged below) or something very like it survived and ultimately gave rise to fishes, amphibians, reptiles, mammals and ultimately ourselves. But what if it had perished? Might some other group have given rise to intelligent beings, and might you now be reading this with five eyes rather than the customary two? If our own origins on Earth really turned on such fine hinges, why should aliens – evolving on different planets – even remotely resemble us?

The answer, according to evolutionary biologist Simon Conway Morris, lies in the phenomenon of evolutionary convergence: the process by which distantly related animals come to closely resemble each other. For example, the similar streamlined shape of dolphins, tuna fish and the extinct ichthyosaurs all evolved independently in response to the same selective pressures for moving efficiently through water at speed.

But what aspects of alien biology might we expect? Carbon-based biochemistry is likely given that carbon forms stable backbone chains, and makes stable but readily breakable bonds with other elements. Other elements, notably silicon and sulphur, make less stable bonds at Earth-like temperatures. Water or some other solvent also seems necessary. For evolution to occur there needs to be some mechanism for storing and replicating information with moderate fidelity, such as DNA, RNA or some analogue. Although the first cells appeared on Earth quite early, multicellular animals took nearly 3 billion more years to evolve. So it may well be that life on other planets could get stuck at the single-celled stage.

On an Earth-like planet it is also likely that radiation from the alien sun or suns would be used in biochemical pathways as a source of energy. For moderately large multicellular primary producers, harnessing light efficiently probably necessitates a light gathering system of leaves and branches. Similar shapes and habits have evolved convergently on Earth, so we might expect “plants” with broadly familiar forms on Earth-like planets.

With few exceptions, animals either eat the primary producers or each other, and there are only so many ways of doing this. Pursuing food often necessitates moving with the mouth first, so the animal has a head and tail end. Teeth and probably jaws evolve to hold and tackle food items. Moving against a hard surface requires specialised structures (such as cilia, a muscular foot or legs) at the interface, so that there is a back and front side. Typically, this also imparts bilateral (left/right) symmetry: indeed, most animals belong to a “super-group” called the Bilateria.

Why not giant intelligent “insects”?

But what about the large brained and intelligent creatures that might be capable of crossing interstellar distances? Insects are by far the most species rich group on Earth: why shouldn’t aliens look more like them? Unfortunately, having your skeleton on the outside makes growth difficult, and entails periodic shedding and regrowth. On Earth-like planets, all but relatively small terrestrial animals with external skeletons would collapse under their own weight during moulting, and some critical size may be necessary for suitably complex brains.

Relatively large brains, some degree of tool use and problem-solving abilities appear to be correlated on Earth, and have evolved multiple times: in apes, whales, dolphins, dogs, parrots, crows andoctopuses. However, the apes have developed tool use to a vastly greater degree. This is at least partly the result of walking on two legs, which frees up the front limbs, and because of the dexterity of our fingers (which may also be a key to the origins of written language).

Ultimately, the jury is out on the extent to which intelligent aliens – if they exist – would resemble us. It may or may not be significant that humans have just two eyes and ears (just enough for stereo vision and hearing), and just two legs (reduced from the initially more stable four). Many other organs also come in pairs as a consequence of our evolutionarily deep-seated – and perhaps inevitable – bilateral symmetry. Still other elements of our body plan are probably nothing more than chance. The fact that we have hands and feet with five digits is a consequence of the fixation on five in our early tetrapod ancestors – close relatives experimented with seven or eight.

Indeed, most species have been subject to an accidental “locking down” during development – making body plans become stereotyped and inflexible with evolutionary time. Untangling the functional from the accidental is one of the big outstanding challenges in evolutionary biology – and may help us better understand how alien lifeforms could differ from us.

The main way we now search for intelligent life in space is by listening for radio or gamma transmissions. These efforts are increasingly being concentrated on star systems with Earth-like planets, as these are believed to be the most likely to harbour life. After all, it is easier to search for “life as we know it” than life as we don’t.

What Species Would Become Dominant On Earth If Humans Died Out?

In a post-apocalyptic future, what might happen to life if humans left the scene? After all, humans are very likely to disappear long before the sun expands into a red giant and exterminates all living things from the Earth.

Assuming that we don’t extinguish all other life as we disappear (an unlikely feat in spite of our unique propensity for driving extinction), history tells us to expect some pretty fundamental changes when humans are no longer the planet’s dominant animal species.

So if we were given the chance to peek forward in time at the Earth some 50m years after our disappearance, what would we find? Which animal or group of animals would “take over” as the dominant species? Would we have a Planet of the Apes, as imagined in popular fiction? Or would the Earth come to be dominated by dolphins, or rats, or water bears, or cockroaches orpigs, or ants?

The question has inspired a lot of popular speculation and many writers have offered lists of candidate species. Before offering any guesses, however, we need to carefully explain what we mean by a dominant species.

Let’s Stick To The Animal Kingdom

One could argue that the current era is an age of flowering plants. But most people aren’t imagining Audrey Two in Little Shop of Horrors when they envision life in the future (even the fictional triffids had characteristically animal features – predatory behaviour and the ability to move).

So let’s keep the discussion to animals. This is for practical rather than philosophical reasons: by some standards the world is now and always has been dominated by bacteria despite the nominal end of the “age of microbes” some 1.2 billion years ago. This was not because bacteria ceased to be, or declined in prevalence, but rather because in our myopia we tend to place more importance on the large multi-cellular organisms that came after.

By some accounts four out of five animals is a nematode (a roundworm), so from all these examples it’s clear that neither prevalence, abundance nor diversity is the prime requisite for being a “dominant” form of life. Instead our imaginations are captured by large and charismatic organisms.

The Meek Shall Inherit the Earth

There’s an undeniable degree of narcissism in the human designation of dominant species and a strong tendency to award the title to close relatives. The Planet of the Apes imagines that our closest primate relatives could develop speech and adopt our technology if we gave them the time and space to do so.

But non-human primate societies are unlikely to inherit our dominance of the earth, because the apes are likely to precede us to extinction. We are already the only living hominid that’sconservation status is not endangered or critically endangered and the kind of global crisis that would extinguish our species is unlikely to spare the fragile remaining populations of the other great apes. In fact, any extinction event that affects humans will probably be most dangerous to organisms that share our basic physiological requirements.

Even if humans succumb to a global pandemic that affects relatively few other mammals, the great apes are precisely the species that are most at risk of contracting any new diseases that drive us from the Earth.

Will another, more distant, relative (primate, mammal, or otherwise) develop intelligence and human-like society? That too seems unlikely. Of all the species that were arguably dominant animals at some stage in the history of the Earth, humans are alone in their remarkable intelligence and manual dexterity. It follows that such traits are neither requirements for being dominant among animals, nor particularly likely traits to evolve. Evolution does not favour intelligence for its own sake, but only if it leads to higher survival and reproductive success. Consequently it’s a profound mistake to imagine that our successors are likely to be especially intelligent or social creatures, or that they will be capable of speech, or adept with human technology.

So what can we safely speculate about the dominant species, some 50m years after humanity? The answer is both dissatisfying and thrilling all at once: while we can be reasonably confident that it won’t be a talking chimpanzee, we otherwise have no idea what it will look like.

The world has seen a number of mass extinction events in the course of its history. The diversification of life following each eventwas relatively rapid – and the “adaptive radiation” of new species produced new forms including many unlike the ancestral lineages that spawned them after surviving the prior extinction. The small shrew-like creatures that scurried beneath the feet of dinosaurs in the late Cretaceous period looked very different to the cave bears, mastodons and whales which descended from them during the age of mammals. Likewise, the reptiles that survived the late Permian extinction some 250m years ago, which killed off 90% of marine and 70% of terrestrial species did not clearly foreshadow the pterosaurs and dinosaurs and mammals and birds that descended from them.

In Wonderful Life: the Burgess Shale and the Nature of History, the late Stephen J. Gould argued that chance, or contingency, as he called it, played a great role during the major transitions of animal life. There is room to argue about the relative importance of contingency in the history of life, which remains a controversial subject today. However Gould’s insight that we can hardly foreshadow the success of modern lineages beyond a future extinction is a humbling reminder of the complexity of evolutionary transitions.

So while it may be possible that, as many have speculated, the ants will take over the Earth from us, we can only imagine what their dominant ant descendants will look like.

A new book by a renowned UFO expert and published for the first time in English has revealed a string of close encounters in Poland

Piotr Cielebiaś is a Polish writer, publisher and journalist dealing with fringe science and paranormal phenomena.

His new book has been translated by UFO expert Philip Mantle who publishes books on strange unexplained sightings.

Here he extracts some of the stories he has translated from the book.

Polish policemen rarely report their UFO encounters but when they do, their reports are astonishing ones.

On January 8th a pair of police officers from in southwestern Poland were returning from a night intervention.

Their task had been to calm down an aggressive drunkard in one of the villages lost amongst forested farmlands.

When the job was done, they began to head back to their station located dozen kilometers away.

It was about 4am when their Kia Ceed was calmly running lone road.

All of a sudden they noticed some bright lights in the distance that hovered over nearby forest. This prologue may sound prosaic but the rest of the story is much more extraordinary… and complicated.

At first they took it for mobile tower but the luminous object was apparently approaching their car.

Soon it stationed over a groove of trees located about a kilometer from the road.

Orange-yellow in colour the object began morphing and changing colors.

One officer recalled that several minutes before seeing the light his partner had told him 'Something is in the air'.

He said: “She had repeated this sentence several times before the light appeared.

“When the object appeared in the horizon, we decided to stop and go out of the car to examine it.

“From the distance it looked like a ball and then changed shape into crescent-like.”

He added that just a while before he could feel as if time slowed for a moment. But it was a matter of seconds.

During the next stage of the encounter Mrs. M. and his partner were totally conscious.

The officers stopped and watched the light maneuvering over a nearby field.

The officer recalled: “It was moving soundlessly, with no noise that should be generated by engine or rotor of the flying machine.

“At some point the object began ejecting something resembling ‘balls of light’.

“Some were disappearing in their way down to the ground, other were returning to the UFO.

“Suddenly from the below of the craft there emanated a ‘flash’ resembling that of a stroboscope.”

According to the officer it was possible to distinguish the shape of the craft hull.

But darkness, strange feelings and appearance of exotic object forced the witnesses to drove off the scene.

To their amazement, after a while UFO began to move in parallel with their car, staying in the constant distance of about a kilometer.

Despite strong concerns and unnatural fear the officer stopped the car in the next village trying to record the object with his mobile phone camera.

He said: “The UFO was in shape of a disc, with a kind of small ‘dome’ on the top.

“It was emitting blinding, yellow light (occasionally turning orange). At the bottom, three smaller white-bluish ‘balls’ could be seen.

“In my opinion they were ‘engines’ but there were no sounds at all.”

It was 4.32 am when the officer took a short video showing a dim light in the distance.

It’s the only one visual documentation of the incident.

The officer said: “The situation was totally unexpected and we weren’t prepared for UFO encounter. I wish I could go closer to that object. It is clear to me now, when all the emotions ceased.”

The UFO recording of was made public but in muted version due to witnesses’ request.

In the original material it is possible to hear excited voiced of both officers commenting the “UFO” appearance.

They also tried to open the car window to check whether the object emits any noticeable sounds but only dog barking could be hear in the distance.

The officers said that during the incident they considered notifying colleagues or other patrol cars about the strange object.

He said: “After short discussion with my partner we decided to stay calm.

“Too many units could hear our report so everyone can imagine the consequences.

“People are rather skeptical and we don’t want more problems”

It was another instance of the taboo UFO encounters made by staff of emergency services is.

The Polish sighting is a very rare case of public servant who decided to reveal his experiences, despite his concern about the consequences.

It’s also interesting that during three stops when the witnesses decided to inspect the object closer, the UFO seemed to withdraw deeper over the fields.

In his opinion the object hovered about 60 meters over the ground but exact size of the craft was hard to estimate.

It was said to be at least dozen of meters in length but it was hard to find any reference points.

In the whole affair there is another one mystery. The witness stated that they observed the craft for about 90 minutes but it seemed too long comparing with the time necessary for them to pass the distance to their home station.

The patrol lost UFO from view when the disc withdrew over nearby fields and then disappeared over the horizon.

About 6 am, when both policemen returned to their station, they decided to report their experience to principals but as Mr. M. said, the duty officer at first burst with laugh and then neglected their story:

The officer said: “He said that I’m dog-tired and hallucinating. The same was with other high officers. They tried to persuade us that we saw balloons or birds.”

Nevertheless, the strange report about exotic “thing” probably induced some concern amongst senior officials but after some time the case was hushed up as if nothing had happened.

Polish national media and web portals usually don’t report UFO incidents although it is a very popular topic.

UFO reports from Polish police officers are also rarity but the case from Opole region showed that many other encounters may be not disclosed due to witnesses’ fear of ridicule.

But the real cause of tabooing UFO reports amongst policemen is that there is no official procedure concerning unidentified objects and phenomena.

In other words, an ordinary officer who sees UFO doesn’t know how to react.

However following publicity around the close encounter other officers came forward with stories.

One of them wrote us a report concerning his UFO sighting in vicinity of Otmuchowskie Lake in 2008.

He recalled: “At about 2 am, over Sarnowice, I saw a row of about 15 red lights.

“Along with my partner I decided to hide our car in darker spot so the object could not to see us.

“But then some of the lights went off and other ones change their positions and began to move away in various directions.”

Another story from police officer recalled an event which took place in Opole region, precisely in Daniec area.

The witness said: “It was June or July 1997. From the duty officer we got a call that some drunken man was sticking people with an axe in a village in Opole area.

“It was an emergency, so we rushed with the siren going.

“Just before we arrived my partner had to answer a call of nature so I stopped the car on the side of the road.

“I also got out to straighten my neck.

“Suddenly I saw those objects and in the same moment my colleague screamed: ‘UFO!” I saw two bright orbs flying in the air 300 meters away from the car.

“They weren’t discotheque lights or lanterns. They were flying with high speed, stopping, accelerating and making sharp turns.

“We stood there in awe. I was glad I wasn’t there alone. During the sighting one of the orbs neared us and stayed dozen of meters away.

“The other one remained over the field and then - as if answering a command - both of them departed in just a second. I know that they were intelligent.”

Another report from former officer of Polish state police said: “It was winter 1978 but the exact date got lost in my mind.

“It was about 2am and I was patrolling area between Ornontowice and Chudów checking if the stores were properly shut down.

“I was on my way from Ornontowice to Chudów.

“The night was beautiful, with no clouds in the sky. Temperature was below freezing and I was standing on the roadside when my attention was drawn to my dog's strange behavior. Automatically I looked up hearing also some unfamiliar sound.”

The officer reported that he saw a black, oblong object with some “windows”. He also got feeling that someone is staring at him.

He added: “It wasn’t a plane. It looked like a hull of Antonov An-22 but without wings.

“There were no sounds at all, despite slight ‘whirring’. Then I saw it against the sky background, from different perspective.

“Afraid that it could be a damaged plane that is going to crash, I rushed to local bakery to phone to the duty officer from Gierałtowice.

“But he also scoffed me saying that I must be drunk.”

'UFO' seen shooting across the MOON in eerie live stream footage captured by amateur astronomer

Bizarre footage showing a dark spherical object hovering across the surface of the moon has emerged online.

The eerie clip, captured by an amateur astronomer, shows an object whizzing across the lunar surface very clearly.

At one point it even appears to spin out of control as it continues out into space.

The shot was picked up on an online live-stream, set up by budding UFO enthusiasts.

Some online sceptics suggested the object could actually be a satellite-there are currently dozens of satellites orbiting the moon.

But other fanatics argued that the way the object moved didn't seem typical of an artificial satellite.

The clip was uploaded to Youtube page SpaceImagingKeith and has already been viewed over 12,000 times.

The enthusiast commented on his discovery: "It's a UFO. Unidentified Flying Object. What it is, I have no idea but its not normal for us."

Mystery over fleet of Boeing 737s seen flying in and out of secretive Area 51 base in Nevada

Rumours are mounting over a fleet of Boeing 737s seen flying in and out of the US Air Force 's most secretive military base every day - Area 51.

The isolated location in the Nevada desert - which has sent UFO and Alienconspiracy theorists' imaginations wild for almost 70 years - is once again at the centre of a new mystery that would baffle even Fox Mulder.

Flight Club reports that a new 'airline' called Janet is operating a number of red-striped Boeings based at Las Vegas’ McCarran International Airport on a daily basis.

The name is the call sign being used when the planes travel in civilian airspace.

Others have speculated it is an acronym standing for 'Just Another Non-Existent Terminal'.

But investigations have shown it's impossible to buy tickets to travel on Janet.

And there's no chatter about it online - so those who aren't sharing what they are up to.

But their destination - or departure from - always appears to be the Nevada National Security Site at Area 51, which is so secretive the US only admitted its existence in 2005.

WHAT WILL IT TAKE TO CONVINCE PEOPLE THAT UFOs ARE IMPORTANT?

UFO historian Richard Dolan has described the initial reaction of many people to his passionate involvement with the subject. They express interest, might even describe something they saw on TV concerning the phenomenon and then after a few minutes of his well informed explanations, their eyes gloss over and they are clearly bored. 

THE ROLE OF AUTHORITY FIGURES 

Yes it’s true; opinion polls indicate the public is interested in UFOs. Advertising executives have long known this, but the fascination is for most part quite superficial. Why is this? I suspect partly because of the massive denial of authority figures that say, “There is nothing to it.” 

After all, the world is so complex; we rely on authorities to put to use vast amounts of data to make what we hope are reasonable decisions. Most people have little understanding of the technological “miracles” that science has achieved, but they are grateful and trust the devices, like planes, autos and computers to work reliably. 

Needing to trust leaders I suspect might be built into our biology. For a million years before civilization was established, hunter-gatherers worked in small groups to survive. Shamans that could use primitive psi abilities combined with careful observations of nature played a decisive role. Leadership was a question of life and death and those clans that had the best leaders, the “shamen” and “sha-women” that knew how best to kill the animals or find the healing herbs and deliver the babies, played a critical role in survival. So most of us have a strong tendency to “follow the leader” and when this becomes extreme “We the People “become ”we the sheeple.” 

LINKING UFOs TO SOLUTIONS FOR MAJOR PROBLEMS 

For the UFO question to have a truly major impact on the mass consciousness it will need to be transformed from an entertaining diversion and become a way of addressing the seemingly insurmountable problems our planet is facing. This is already being attempted by those within the UFO community that discuss the possibility of downloading into our technological culture the secrets of the energy propulsion systems of flying saucers. So-called “free energy” in one fell swoop might eliminate poverty and pollution, thus possibly reversing global warming and ending world hunger. 

Of course in order for the so-called ETs to give us such devices they might understandably insist on a peaceful transformation of our planet to replace what UFOlogist Stanton Friedman has called our perpetual state of “tribal warfare.” This is going to be a hard sell when the mass media and academia in service to their corporate masters repeatedly insist, “There is nothing to it.” 

HE WHO PAYS THE PIPER CALLS THE TUNE 

From the control groups’ point of view, those of the clandestine forces determined to keep a lid on the UFO issue, an important strategy would be to recruit authority figures to block any significant discussion of flying saucers. Opinion makers who step out of line would find that their access to funding has been cut off. This is all done behind the scenes and is quite effective in my opinion. 

In the USA the National Academy of Sciences has made it perfectly clear that UFO studies are not part of the “legitimate” agenda for professional science. Scientists that step out of line will find themselves unable to secure grants thus ending their careers. 

In broadcast journalism, talk show hosts that might attempt to inform the public in a detailed way would likely find themselves without corporate sponsors. The major newspapers are controlled through their editorial boards that in turn are dependent on corporate sponsors to continue publishing. 

This analysis is not a conspiracy theory. I describe the way power works. In the former Soviet Union it was the political dictatorship of the Communist Party that attempted to regulate almost every aspect of people’s lives. That social experiment failed miserably. In the West however social control is far more sophisticated, decentralized and uses the knowledge of social psychology called “public relations” to effectively manipulate the masses. 

RESISTANCE TO CHANGE ALSO COMES FROM WITHIN 

On the individual level our tendency to identify with our thoughts leads to a profound attachments to old ideas. This resistance to changing one’s point of view flows from the ego itself. People strive to defend their religion, political ideology, or moral customs to the point where some would even kill to maintain them. Just look at the present situation in Syria, or at the millions killed centuries ago during the Protestant Reformation in Europe. 

Something similar in my opinion applies to acknowledging the high probability that the ET explanation for the flying saucer phenomenon is true. Such a realization threatens to radically change the conceptual paradigm of our entire civilization. Since humans so strongly identify with their present beliefs it is understandable that many reject such a brave new worldview in which we might have to accept an ET presence. 

UFO INTELLIGENCE HAS A TIGER BY THE TAIL. 

What about the intelligence responsible for flying saucers? Could “they” (whoever they ultimately turn out to be) simply fill the sky with structured craft? Or stage the proverbial “landing on the White House Lawn?” Such actions would certainly convince the masses that flying saucers are of the greatest importance. In my judgment this scenario is the least likely to ever take place. Given the militaristic mindset of our civilization, a sudden realization of the reality of UFOs could be catastrophic. My guess is that careful gradual efforts to alert us of their importance is the game plan of the intelligence responsible for the phenomenon and possibly within some elements of the establishment as well. 

So what will it take to change mass public opinion on the flying saucer question? If the alleged ETs continue the present pattern of interactions, millions of individual sightings yearly, interspersed with occasional massive waves, I imagine that there will be opportunities to slowly build public awareness by a responsible program of education.

This will require UFO enthusiasts to discipline the crazies in our midst, think creatively and most importantly of all build stable, well-financed organizations to carry out the educational campaign. All this will need to be done in the face of powerful opposition by corporate groups that have great experience in controlling public opinion, the economy and their political operatives that run governments.

Can we trust UFO intelligence to follow what we imagine is their existing “game plan?” I suppose not. UFO researcher Michael Lindemann once said that we should never assume that we can think like the so-called “aliens.” Nevertheless the ever-changing pattern of interactions, as pointed out by UFO researcher Grant Cameron, appear to be as if the aliens are turning the pages of a “play book.” This can be seen as “Men in Black” in the 1960s, so called “abductions” in the 70s, crop circles in the 80s and continuous past and present mental interactions with millions of experiencers. Many of which are instilled with a sense of mission and are striving to convince their fellow Earthlings that we should look up and accept what our “lying eyes” are seeing. 

My guess is that UFO intelligence will present us with infinitely creative new ways of waking us up from our collective stupor concerning their “wonders in the sky.” I am of the opinion that their presence is non-harmful and very likely to be beneficial to mankind. Bringing others to this hopeful perspective I imagine is a challenge that UFO activists will continue to face for some time.

Are we ready for contact with extraterrestrial intelligence?

The SETI project scientists are known for tracking possible extraterrestrial signals, but now they are also considering sending messages from Earth telling of our position. A researcher from the University of Cádiz (Spain) questions this idea in view of the results from a survey taken by students, revealing the general level of ignorance about the cosmos and the influence of religion when tackling these matters.

The Search for ExtraTerrestrial Intelligence (SETI) project is an initiative that began in the 70s with funding from NASA, but that has evolved towards the collaboration of millions of Internet users for the processing of data from the Arecibo Observatory (Puerto Rico), where space tracking is carried out.

Now the members of this controversial project are trying to go further and not only search for extraterrestrial signs, but also actively send messages from Earth (Active SETI) to detect possible extraterrestrial civilisations. Astrophysicists, such as Stephen Hawking, have already warned of the risk that this implies for humanity, since it could favour the arrival of beings with more advanced technology and dubious intentions.

The ethical and sociological implications of this proposal have been analysed by the neuro-psychologist Gabriel G. de la Torre, professor at the University of Cádiz and participant in previous projects such as Mars 500 or space psychology topical team project financed by the European Space Agency, who wonders: “Can such a decision be taken on behalf of the whole planet? What would happen if it was successful and ‘someone’ received our signal? Are we prepared for this type of contact?”

To answer these questions, the professor sent a questionnaire to 116 American, Italian and Spanish university students. The survey assessed their knowledge of astronomy, their level of perception of the physical environment, their opinion on the place that things occupy in the cosmos, as well as religious questions – for example, “do you believe that God created the universe?” – or on the likelihood of contact with extraterrestrials.

The results, published in the journal ‘Acta Astronautica’, indicate that, as a species, humanity is still not ready for trying to actively contact a supposed extraterrestrial civilisation, since people lack knowledge and preparation. For this reason, SETI researchers are recommended in this study to look for alternative strategies.

“This pilot study demonstrates that the knowledge of the general public of a certain education level about the cosmos and our place within it is still poor. Therefore, a cosmic awareness must be further promoted – where our mind is increasingly conscious of the global reality that surrounds us – using the best tool available to us: education,” De la Torre emphasised. ”In this respect, we need a new Galileo to lead this journey”.

It was deduced from the questionnaires, which will soon be available to everyone on line, that university students and the rest of society lack awareness on many astronomical aspects, despite the enormous progress of science and technology. It also revealed that the majority of people consider these subjects according to their religious belief and that they would rely on politicians in the event of a huge global-scale crisis having to be resolved.

“Regarding our relation with a possible intelligent extraterrestrial life, we should not rely on moral reference points of thought, since they are heavily influenced by religion. Why should some more intelligent beings be ‘good’?,” added the researcher, who believes that this matter should not be monopolized by a handful of scientists: “In fact, it is a global matter with a strong ethical component in which we must all participate”.

It’s a cosmic game of hide-and-seek. A team of astronomers say that the next search for advanced extraterrestrial civilisations should look for stars – or even galaxies – that have vanished without a trace, as anything so unexplainable could only be due to life far more intelligent than us.

Beatriz Villarroel at Uppsala University in Sweden says this crazy idea has been gnawing at her since her first year of graduate studies. Now she and two undergraduates have finally taken the plunge. They scoured multiple surveys of the night’s sky by eye in order to see if any of nearly 300,000 light sources disappeared from one survey to the next.

So far the results are mixed. The team found one interesting artefact that looks like it might have vanished, but they can’t be sure. “It was a depressing case in the sense that we neither could reject it and neither could we say that it was a real candidate,” says Villarroel. Although the team checked for so-called false positives, throwing out hundreds of similar disappearing objects, this one withstood all tests – but only just.

Even if the disappearance is real, there could still be an astrophysical explanation. Quasars – the bright centres of galaxies powered by supermassive black holes – can shut down in less than a decade and drop drastically in brightness. Stars, too, can be highly variable.

That’s why Villarroel and her colleagues plan to search for this missing object (and any others found in the future), on the largest telescopes. If it is still not visible, then they will be able to rule out most astrophysical phenomena and say with more likelihood that it has vanished. Only then will they begin speculating about extraterrestrial causes

“I think it’s a very reasonable thing to do,” says Jay Olson at Boise State University, Idaho. “It’s a deliberate search for something very unusual, which could be hiding in existing data across time. At this stage of the game, it’s a very limited search, but it illustrates well what can be accomplished.”

Unlike Tabby’s Star, a baffling star that dips in brightness and made headlines last year when astronomers suggested that “alien megastructures” could be the culprit, these objects would have no physical culprit behind their sudden disappearance – it’s just not possible for something to suddenly vanish from the universe without a trace. Instead, Villarroel and her colleagues invoke Arthur C. Clarke’s third law: “Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic.”

So while other teams search for possible signatures of astro-engineering like the one suspected around Tabby’s star, Villarroel and her colleagues are searching for things that seem impossible. If they confirm a star that has vanished without an accompanying supernova explosion or a galaxy that has disappeared from view, there’s simply no physical explanation – save for aliens.

If we ever came across aliens, would we be able to understand them?

Many scientists believe that alien civilisations exist. For them, the question is now whether we will encounter them in the near future or a very long time from now, rather than if at all. So let’s imagine that we suddenly stand face-to-face with members of an alien species. What would we do first? Surely communicating that we come in peace would be a priority. But would we ever be able to understand each other?

The one thing we can be confident about exchanging with aliens is scientific information. If the laws of the universe are the same everywhere, then different descriptions of these laws should, in principle, be equivalent. This is the rationale behind initiatives like The Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) and Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI).

Matters are more complicated when it comes to language, which is the single most important factor in human cooperation. It is by communicating our intentions that we are able to work together in surprisingly large groups. For this reason, it is plausible that any technologically versatile alien civilisation would have something like language. Can we expect to learn such an alien language?

The first hurdle would be its medium. Humans communicate in a 85-255Hz frequency range of sound and in the 430-770 THz frequency range of light. This is unlikely to be true of aliens, who will have evolved differently. Nevertheless, the problem is largely a technical one. Speeded up whale songs that are otherwise inaudible to humans, for instance, show that it is relatively easy to map “alien” stimuli into forms that humans can perceive.
The more difficult question is whether we would ever be able to learn the internal structure of an alien language. Existing perspectives in the psychology of language give two very different answers.

The generativist approach, which holds that the structure of language is hardwired into the brain, suggests this wouldn’t be possible. It argues that humans come with an inbuilt universal grammar that has a specific number of settings – each corresponding to the acceptable order in which words and parts of words can be arranged in a given language system. The language we hear in early life activates one of these settings, which then allows us to distinguish between valid and invalid ways of combining words.

The key point is that the number of grammars is very limited. Though the rules of human languages can and do vary, proponents of the generativist model argue they can only do so within strict parameters. For example, the “head directionality” parameter determines whether the verbs in a language precede or follow their complements, with English being head-initial (“Bob gave a cake to Alice”) and Japanese being head-final (“Bob to Alice a cake gave”).

For generativists, it is extremely unlikely that an alien species would happen to have the same parameters as human beings. In the words of Noam Chomsky, the leading proponent of this view:
If a Martian landed from outer space and spoke a language that violated universal grammar, we simply would not be able to learn that language the way that we learn a human language like English or Swahili … We’re designed by nature for English, Chinese, and every other possible human language. But we’re not designed to learn perfectly usable languages that violate universal grammar.

The cognitive view, on the other hand, sees semantics (structures of meaning) as being more important than syntax (structures of grammar). According to this view, sentences like “quadruplicity drinks procrastination” are syntactically well-formed but semantically meaningless. For this reason, proponents of the cognitive view argue that grammar alone is not enough to understand language. Instead, it needs to be partnered with knowledge of the concepts that structure how language users think.

We can also look at our own world to see how organisms can have striking similarities, even if they have developed in very different ways and in contrasting environments. This is known as “convergent evolution”. In physical terms, for example, wings and eyes have independently emerged among animals through evolution at several different times over, and birds in ecologically isolated New Zealand have evolved behaviours typically seen in mammals elsewhere. The cognitive view offers hope that human and alien languages might be mutually intelligible.

Some argue that even the most advanced human concepts are built up from basic building blocks that are shared across species, such as notions of past and future; similarity and difference; and agent and object. If an alien species manipulates objects, interacts with its peers and combines concepts, the cognitive approach therefore predicts there might be enough mental architecture in common to make its language accessible to humans. It is implausible, for instance, that an alien species that reproduced biologically would lack concepts for distinguishing between genetically related and unrelated groups.

But is the cognitive view correct? Research on neural networks shows that languages could be learned without specialised structures in the brain. This is important because it means there may be no need to postulate an innate universal grammar to explain language acquisition. Also, it seems there may be human languages that don’t fit in the universal grammar framework. Though these results are far from conclusive (for instance, they can’t explain why humans alone seem to have language), the evidence leans towards the cognitive account.

So, it might be reasonable to assume that humans could learn alien languages. Clearly, there would probably always be aspects of an alien language (like our poetry) that are inaccessible. Equally, some species may occupy such a different mental universe that it is only broadly equivalent to that of humans. Nevertheless, I think we can be cautiously optimistic that universal structures in the physical, biological and social worlds would be enough to anchor human and alien languages in a common semantic framework.

‘Platform-like’ UFO spotted hovering near Arkansas nuclear plant

An Arkansas witness at Dover reported watching a “bright, flashy, platform-like object” hovering near the nuclear plant in Russellvillle, according to testimony in Case 61651 from the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) witness reporting database.

The object was noticed beginning about 1 a.m. on November 8, 2014, which was about 20 miles from the witnesses’ home.

“It emitted multi-colored lights as it stay stationary in the sky,” the witness stated. “For the next following two hours I would check on it periodically.”

The object moved at about 3 a.m.

The witness saw the object hovering near the nuclear power plant near Russellville, AR.

“It ascended a flight path over my house and was completely out of view within three minutes. Object had no sound and had a strange electromagnetic-like feeling pulsate through my body as it flew over me.”

The witness has tracked other objects in the area and has experience flying aircraft.

Arkansas Nuclear One (ANO) is a two-unit pressurized water reactor nuclear power plant located on Lake Dardanelle just outside Russellville, Arkansas. It is the only nuclear power plant in Arkansas. It is owned by Entergy Arkansas and operated by Entergy Nuclear.

Everyone has heard the term UFO but few have heard of its underwater counterpart USO -unidentified submersible object - but a new book lifts the lid on the phenomenon

It has often been said that we know more about the surface of the Moon than we do about the world’s seas and oceans.

The study of USOs (Unidentified Submersible Objects) is a case in point.

For years, strange phenomena have been reported by people at sea, especially by Naval personel.

Many of the reports lie in the USO files of the Soviet and Russian Navy and remain secret however some have filtered out.

In their new book authors Paul Stonehill and Philip Mantle reveal stories of strange encounters by the Soviet and Russian Navy with unexplained objects.

The two experts say most of these stories have never been told outside of Russia but they provide yet more evidence that we are not alone.

Indeed, they suggest a permanent presence of something unusual in the depths of Earth's large bodies of water.

Here Philip describes the pair's findings:

For decades now these mysterious underwater UFOs have been observed in the Earth’s oceans and lakes and the one country in the world that seems to have had more such sightings is Russia.

The Soviet Union's military fleet commanders guarded its secret of the USO subject and those witnesses who tried to go public were swiftly ridiculed and their sightings were officially debunked.

But despite their best efforts USO reports were made public and no matter what the Soviet officials tried to do the USOs will not simply go away.

Our knowledge of the depths of the seas and oceans and large lakes is very limited - it is said that we know more about the surface of the moon than the depths of the oceans - but these are some of the sightings which hint at a world beneath the waves.

THE SWIMMERS

One of the most peculiar of all such underwater encounters is one known as ‘The Swimmers’.

In the summer of 1982 Mark Shteynberg, along with Lt. Colonel Gennady Zverev Soviet Navy), conducted periodic training of the reconnaissance divers from the Turkestan and Central Asian military regions.

Some of these training exercises took place at the Issyk Kul Lake in Krygyzstan.

Quite unexpectedly, the officers were paid a visit by a very important official, Major-General V. Demyanenko, commander of the Military Diver Service of the Engineer Forces of the Ministry of Defence.

He informed the local officers of an extraordinary event that had occurred during similar training exercises in the Trans-Baikal and West Siberian military regions.

There, during their military training dives in Lake Baikal, the frogmen had encountered mysterious underwater swimmers, very human-like, except that their size was much larger--almost three meters tall.

Despite icy-cold water temperatures and a depth of fifty meters, they were dressed only in tight-fitting silvery suits with neither scuba diving equipment, nor any other equipment - only sphere-like helmets concealing their heads.

The local military commander, who was quite alarmed by such encounters, decided on a plan to capture one of the creatures.

To complete the mission, a special group of seven divers, under the command of an officer, had been dispatched.

Apparently, as the Soviet Navy frogmen tried to cover the creature with a net, a powerful unknown force threw the entire group out of the deep waters and up to the surface

RED SPHERE IN THE RED SEA

In August 1965, the crew of the Soviet steamship Raduga, while navigating in the Red Sea, observed a remarkable spectacle.

At around two miles away from their vessel, a fiery sphere dashed out from under the water and hovered over the surface of the sea illuminating the ocean in every direction.

The sphere was estimated to be sixty meters in diameter, and it hovered above the sea at an altitude of 150 meters.

A gigantic pillar of water arose as the sphere emerged from the sea and then collapsed some moments later.

This observation was mentioned in a number of Russian publications and was taken very seriously by the Soviet authorities. It is yet another typical example of a USO report

SILVER BEEHIVE

In the 1970s, reports issued by Admiral V.A. Domislovsky, chief of the Pacific Fleet’s Intelligence Department, described an unknown, gigantic cylindrical object sighted by Soviet Navy in “faraway” regions of Pacific Ocean.

The object was 800-900 metres long.

When it hovered over the ocean, smaller objects exited from one of its ends - like bees from a beehive - and descended into the waters.

Some time later they re-entered the gigantic UFO.

After the smaller objects thus “loaded” inside, the UFO flew away and disappeared over the horizon.

BERMUDA TRIANGLE

According to a report on MosNews.com former Rear Admiral and nuclear submarine commander Yury Beketov saw USO activity inside the famous the Bermuda Triangle .

He said: “We repeatedly observed that the instruments detected the movements of material objects at unimaginable speed, around 230 knots (250 mph).

It’s hard to reach that speed on the surface – only in the air is it readily possible.

'The beings that created those material objects significantly exceed us in development.”

Russian Naval intelligence expert and Captain 1st Rank Igor Barklay also noted that the unidentified objects were most often spotted in deep water near where military forces are concentrated – off the Bahamas, Bermuda, Puerto Rico and the east coast of the United States.

Captain 1st Rank (now retired) Yuri Vinogradov who had served in the Soviet Navy from 1975 to 2000 also had a story to tell.

Vinogradov was a top expert in his field, had been involved in a number of submarine search and recovery operations; a veteran of “high-risk” units, and a participant in four long-range missions.

He had been to the Devil’s Sea; also know as the Dragon Triangle which is located between Japan, Guam, and northern Philippines.

Some call this area the "Pacific Bermuda Triangle".

In the 1980s, Vinogradov had participated in the search and rescue operations involving the Soviet Pacific Fleet.

Twice he and other officers had observed, on the sonar screen, a USO that had moved at great speed, and had disappeared in to the depths never to be seen again.

NASA Promises To ‘Find Alien Civilizations By 2025’ – The Drip Feeding Of Disclosure?

“We are on the cusp of discovering alien civilizations”, NASA’s top scientists have said. They have very recently predicted that we are just one generation away from finding something in our Milky Way neighbourhood, which is bustling with environments conducive to life…….let the Drip Feeding of Disclosure begin!

The NASA Scientists made their comments at a panel discussion Tuesday, the scientists predict that the first discoveries will definitely come within a decade. Chief scientist Ellen Stofan believes we’ll have “definitive evidence within 20 to 30 years,” as “in most cases we have the technology, and we’re on a path to implementing it. And so I think we’re definitely on the road.” Ellen Stofan has been asked about UFO’s and Aliens before but always kept quiet when asked….

“I think we’re one generation away in our solar system, where it’s on an icy moon or on Mars, and one generation [away] on a planet around a nearby star,” former astronaut John Grunsfeld said at the session.

“Sometime in the near future, people will be able to point to a star and say, ‘that star has a planet like Earth’,” said Sara Seager, professor of planetary science and physics at MIT.

“Just imagine the moment, when we find potential signatures of life,” concurred Matt Mountain, a top space telescope boffin. “Imagine the moment when the world wakes up and the human race realizes that its long loneliness in time and space may be over – the possibility we’re no longer alone in the universe.”

“I think in the next 20 years we will find out we are not alone in the universe,” added NASA astronomer Kevin Hand.

NASA has made some huge strides in both spotting distant worlds and analysing their chemical composition. Stofan said: “We know where to look.” Indeed, the Kepler mission has found no shortage of rocks that could support life, while icy moons in our own galaxy have long been suspected to hold incredible secrets deep beneath their own icey crust – among them Jupiter’s enigmatic moons – especially Europa, where a gargantuan body of water rages beneath the thin surface and water vapour’s are literally sprayed 200 km upward, giving clues to life-supporting minerals beneath. This while Ganymede is thought to have more water than all of Earth’s oceans combined!

The same can also be said of Saturn’s satellite Enceladus. Scientists found evidence to suggest that, like our more distant galactic neighbours, Mars also harboured entire oceans, the cracks and scars on its surface appearing to be made by raging water currents full of salt. All of these scenarios makes the Milky Way quite “a soggy place,” according to the director of NASA’s Astrophysics Division, Paul Hertz.

“We can see water in the interstellar clouds from which planetary systems and stellar systems form,” he says. “We can see water in the disks of debris that are going to become planetary systems around other stars, and we can even see comets being dissipated in other solar systems as [their] star evaporates them.”

The now well known Mars rover Curiosity, which is actually stationed on the Red Planet, continues to dazzle scientists daily with intriguing new finds. Just two weeks ago, it discovered organic molecules containing carbon and “fixed” nitrogen – elements which are central to ALL known life. The mars Rover has also got many people talking about NASA hiding images from Mars which prove that there was once life on the Red Planet!

The Kepler mission’s amazing success has also been a godsend – its lens measuring the very tiniest changes in the light intensity of a star, as a planet passes by it. With its robotic eye, it showed us that life and rocky worlds should be far more common in our galaxy than the likes of gassy Saturn and Jupiter!

Numerous advances in both technology and our ability to implement it means that we are also accelerating the pace more than ever. One US company has recently just been given a grant for its plasma rocket to reach Mars in JUST 39 days, while NASA itself is already hard at work on developing a new Mars lander that resembles a Flying saucer and promises to make it possible to “safely land heavier spacecraft” on alien planets!

It has become very clear that Humanity is now facing two major separate challenges in space: the first one is finding signs of intelligent life, the other is identifying potentially habitable environments. While one may rush to tie the two together, the latter is a considerably easier proposition to make.Stofan is all but certain the manned mission to Mars will emerge with spectacular discoveries, which kind of confirms the conspiracy theories that are going around about their being signs of ancient civilizations on Mars, something which NASA has been accused of trying to cover up: “I’m a field geologist; I go out and break open rocks and look for fossils,” she said. “Those are hard to find. So I have a bias that it’s eventually going to take humans on the surface of Mars — field geologists, astrobiologists, chemists — actually out there looking for that good evidence of life that we can bring back to Earth for all the scientists to argue about.”

These exciting discoveries are accompanied by huge strides in lens technologies NASA says will be central to finding alien life within at least two decades. Already there are several contenders for the next King of telescopes, their tech specs threatening to leave the famed Hubble far behind; among them the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), which cost the space agency a fat $8.8 billion. The technology on-board the impressive Telescope is strong enough to peer at distant ‘super-Earths’ and analyse the possible chemical composition of those worlds, the gasses they spew out being strong indicators of life. Volgens de website New Scientist gedraagt het voorwerp zich erg vreemd: het draait achterwaarts om de zon en gaat iedere dag iets hoger vliegen.

De ruimtevlek kreeg de naam Niku, wat ‘rebel’ betekent in het Chinees. Astrofysicus Matthew Holman laat weten dat Niku het bewijs is dat er in ons zonnestelsel veel meer gaande is dan we beseffen. Andere astronomen zijn benieuwd naar wat het voorwerp volgens theoretische analisten zou kunnen zijn.

Vondst 2000 jaar oude magische spreuken stelt archeologen voor raadsel

In Servië proberen archeologen magische spreuken op kleine zilveren en gouden rolletjes te ontcijferen. De rolletjes zijn gevonden bij 2000 jaar oude skeletten.

“Het alfabet is Grieks, dat is duidelijk,” zei hoofdarcheoloog Miomir Korac. “De taal is Aramees. Dit is een mysterie voor ons.”

De skeletten zijn ontdekt bij een enorme elektriciteitscentrale in Kostolac in het noordoosten van Servië. Er worden opgravingen in het gebied verricht voordat kan worden begonnen met de bouw van een tweede centrale op de resten van de oude Romeinse stad Viminacium.

UFOlogy’s Fatal Flaw

Sitting on my shelf next to my computer is an array of dog-eared books and white papers, that I had as a kid on space, robots and UFO’s—nostalgic reminders of the exciting ideas that whisked my mind away to other places and other possibilities. As I became more educated and experienced in our little sliver of the Universe I realized that a grave injustice is being waged in UFOlogy. Please consider the following carefully. It is an excellent starting point to make yourself impervious to UFOlogy nonsense.

Human beings are obsessed with the possibility of life on other planets. Countless movies, books, and television shows are centered around alien civilizations, and there is an entire subculture of people devoted to the idea that aliens not only exist, but have already visited our planet for the inexplicable purpose of livestock mutilation and the molestation of the barely-literate. Up to 90% of all UFO/Alien cases can immediately be thrown out due to the extreme improbability that they could and would never happen. Take for example the fact that almost all UFO cases that are reported involve humanoid aliens.

Three things are generally intrinsic about human beings:

1. We think we know everything. Who says we are intelligent at all.

2. We think everything is about us.

3. We need things to be about us in order to care.

Thus, in most of our stories about aliens, the aliens come because of us (be it to kill, enslave, or steal our women) or to take resources that are dear to us.  Never mind the gaunt, nearly skeletal figure with the long talons and the scorpion-like tail and the mouth full of razor teeth. Never mind the little green or gray men with oversize craniums and oversize eyes and tiny mouths. Never mind the cat-men or lizard-men or dog-men or people with blue skin and strange, tattoo-like markings or odd brow ridges or pointier ears. Why would an alien look that similar to us?

I blame movies and TV for such unimaginative insights into what is possible in the Universe. I also blame the sorry state of education in science. In science fiction movies and TV shows, intelligent aliens are usually the same basic shape as humans: two arms, two legs and a head. But why would creatures that evolved on a completely different planet look so similar to us?

The truth is, aliens tend to look like us in science fiction for a couple of basic reasons: budget, and relatability. When it comes to film and TV, it’s problematic to make a race of aliens that does not resemble humans. Actors have to play these roles. What aliens look like in the real world will depend on where they evolved. An alien that evolved in interstellar space would have very different needs from an alien that evolved on an Earthlike planet.

“Most aliens in SF are humanoid because humans produce SF,” says Michael H. New, an Astrobiology Discipline Specialist at NASA. “While we are interested in the ‘other,’ our conception of otherness is often limited.”

Most if not all Exobiologists firmly agree that aliens would not look at all like humans. For example, life that evolved elsewhere would look totally different from us — and in fact, if you “reran the tape” from the beginning of life on Earth, you wouldn’t end up with humans on this planet either. The emergence of humanoids on Earth is a totally random event that was a fluke, even with the exact conditions that we arose from.

We have to contemplate the nature of a life form that has evolved on a completely separate planet. Even that statement is limiting. Life may be able to evolve on moons, nebula, or on planets that are bombarded with strange sources of radiation. They may exist and function on different time scales based on the gravity that they evolved in. Special relativity makes for very strange bedfellows. It is possible that they could be here already just beyond our perceptual ability. There truly is more things in heaven and earth then is dreamed in our collective philosophy.

It is intellectual ignorance to think the nucleotides A.G.C.T. are the only alphabet lettersof life. Assuredly the letters, language, and syntax of life will be unknown to us. Truly alien. That is what would be expected by isolated evolution.

But that is not what we are seeing in UFOlogy.  The overwhelming consensus of alien reports in the media and in first hand accounts predominantly highlight humanoid type aliens. Aliens that are structurally similar to our construction is what is usually reported. They may be grey, blue, green, scaled, tall or short, but a humanoid nonetheless.

Consider that on our planet our human physical form is the same one that we share with the great apes. Humans and the other great apes only account for less than a dozen different types of species. We share the humanoid form with our closest primate brothers but that is essentially it. Interestingly Mother Earth has an estimated 8.7 million species with still up to 80% still to be found, according to Nature magazine. So the percentage of life forms on Earth that are humanoid in form only accounts for 0.0000003793% of all currently known life. By any measure and consideration that is an impossibly small number. So the logical conclusion to draw is that the humanoid form is exceedingly rare even on Earth.

So what really is the odds that a alien race would evolve on a different planet then us, find us in the vastness of space, in this sliver of time, and look anything like us? It would be a probability that so infinitesimally small that it would be in the ballpark of a googolplex raised to the power of a googolplex to one. That is a number a thousand orders of magnitude larger than the total amount of elementary particles (2.5 x 10^89) in the entire Universe. Just think about that for a moment.

Now if we think of different planetary systems, the environment, chemistry and the strength of forces there might not have any resemblance to Earth at all. I would go as far as to say, we do not even have a rigorous definition of what constitutes a “living system”. But for beings with “intelligence” to understand and explore the universe, give them a few million years of evolutionary head start than humans (which is insignificant by universal time scales) and they would do all sorts of things which we cannot even start contemplating. They might not even restrict their “consciousness” to their original physical bodies and found out ways to immortalize themselves through machine entities, preserve and operate the “brain” without any bodily requirement and discovered novel ways of “reproduction”.  Although not well-regarded for their wits as individuals, the remarkable “hive minds” of bees and ants could point to another manner in which alien intelligence arises — across many individuals acting collectively, rather than as discrete beings.

With the immense grandeur of the Universe still only scratched by our limited intellect makes us a very uninformed species. Life  we truly encounter it will not be a mutated version of ourselves. It will be more strange, unexpected and probably terrifying to our primate brains. If you look at all the cases in modern UFOlogy you will soon realize that almost all of them have humanoid type aliens. You can immediately discard them as wish fulfillment or down right delusional.

I understand that the ideas in this article are the equivalent to intellectual heresy in the UFO field and represent a major flaw in modern UFOlogy. This major failing can be fixed by using critical thinking when assessing a UFO report. For UFOlogy to regain respectability it must appeal and make sense to the non-true believers. We must strive to eliminate the giggle factor and drive toward sense and sensibility.  A good first step in that intellectual crusade is to know humanoid aliens are nearly impossible in probability.

A reflection of the observer, not a refection on reality.

UFO Over Gateway Arch in St. Louis Still Unsolved

A cell phone video and surveillance camera footage of a UFO hovering over the famous Gateway Arch straddling the Mississippi River in St. Louis have been traveling around the Internet and media sites for nearly a week with no explanation yet. Do aliens take summer vacation road trips? Would you recognize one in the crowds at Disneyworld?

According to various St. Louis media sites, Chase Rhoads, an “independent cleaning consultant” at the Casino Queen (“Home of the Loosest Slots!”) in East St. Louis (that’s on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River) was on his smoke break at around 2:30 am on August 2nd when he saw something strange over the arch.

I’ve been out there for a little over a month now and I’ve never seen anything above that arch. I was sitting on my break just smoking a cigarette as normal and looked at the arch and the strobe light appeared. It just appeared.

Rhoads has the presence of mind (and desire for fame) to record the blinking UFO and send it to a local TV station which showed it on a news report. That prompted an unnamed quick-thinking employee at the Malcolm W Martin Memorial Park (“Home of the Gateway Geyser and the Mississippi River Overlook!”), also in Illinois, to check the surveillance footage from its Gateway Arch camera (“Best View of the Loosest Slots!”) and found five minutes of footage of the same UFO.

Not wanting to pass up a good marketing opportunity, park officials posted the video on their Facebook page (“We guarantee you will be perplexed if you watch all 5 minutes of this surveillance footage!”) where speculations on what it might be piled up (“Home of the Best Comments on the Gateway Arch UFO!”)

As of this writing, there have been no confirmed explanations of the UFO. Spokespersons from the FAA and the nearby Scott Air Force Base say it’s not theirs.

There are a few interesting things about this UFO. The park camera got a clear shot and also showed a second light descending. It’s not the first UFO captured by that park’s surveillance camera. On July 14 2016, it reportedly recorded a daytime UFO, although no other information or the video seem to be available. Mike Buehlhorn, director of the Metro East Parks and Recreation District, commented on the August 2nd UFO:

There’s something weird with that one.

What struck him as weird? He didn’t say, but Chase Rhoads agreed.

It’s definitely odd, to be dead center over a national monument like that. If that was the White House, people would be all over that.

If it’s aliens, they’ve probably already visited the White House. Why go there again when you can visit the “Home of the Loosest Slots” instead?

Latest Footage of ‘Triangle UFO’ May Be Clearest To-Date

A recent piece of nighttime footage, which appears to show an unidentified triangular aircraft passing over Virginia, has recently appeared online, offering what may be some of the clearest video of such an aircraft to-date.

According to Roger Marsh at OpenMinds, the object was observed hovering near Route 29 shortly before 9 PM local time, in the vicinity of Charlottesville, Virginia. The footage depicts the object as it slowly began to move after the initial observation, and can be seen passing over the observers as they film the craft.

The footage was submitted to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON), and has been filed under case number 77904, Marsh reported.

Features of the object in the video appear to be consistent with dozens of similar reports of triangular aircraft gathered over the years, which have been observed mostly at night, and in numerous areas of the world.

The primary features can be seen in the enhanced photo at the top of this page, which shows the white points of light marking the three corners of the object, paired with an intermittent flashing red light in the center of the craft’s underside.

The observers speculated that the object may have been some variety of drone as they filmed it, and noted that it appeared to be moving “very fast.”

In 2013, similar reports of triangular light formations received attention from Fox News affiliates in the area, after video footage of one of the apparent aircraft was captured by resident David Levy, as seen in the video below:

Other notable past observations include a “wave” of reports of a triangle-shaped aircraft seen over Belgium in the early 1990s. Less than a decade later, several police officers from different jurisdictions in St. Clair County, Illinois, reported observing and following a large, triangle-shaped aircraft as it passed slowly over region. Skeptics have argued that the St. Clair County UFO was merely a blimp operated by the American Airship Company, which may have been giving “a VIP tour.” However, the time the officers observed the aircraft was during the early morning hours (an odd time for a VIP tour, for which no records were ever produced). Additionally, each of the officers commented on the distinctly triangular shape of the aircraft they observed, which seems inconsistent with a typical dirigible.

Once again, a similar object was filmed and uploaded by YouTube user Ceejay Hott, who filmed an object similar to the Virginia MUFON footage last year over Inwood, West Virginia:

A similar video depicting an unusual aircraft with a triangular shape can also be seenhere.

Although there are minor variances in shape, flight characteristics, and lighting patterns, the objects nonetheless appear to be roughly consistent, while depicting objects that do not easily match known varieties of aircraft, military or otherwise. A variety of interpretations about their design and function have been offered, ranging from stealth aircraft, to some variety of “platform blimp”, as suggested with observations of much larger aerial vehicles bearing this signature triangular shape.

Perhaps, in the years to come, new details may be revealed about these aircraft, either through official channels (Air Force, Military, etc), or with the help of new advancements in camera and other technologies that will allow greater clarity and detailed observation when, and where, the objects appear.
