Fake News in 1947 Was the Reason for a Real Life X-File
Fake News in 1947 Was the Reason for a Real Life X-File
It's not every day that a freedom of information request is this good, butrecently released FBI docshave it all: flying saucers, private meetings with intelligence officers, and a mysterious plane crash. By successfully requesting the file of noted conspiracy man and authorFred Lee Crisman, journalist Michael Best has identified a truly remarkable find: a real life X-file.
Long before the 90s show made us want to believe, the released documents in Fred Crisman’s file, labeled SM-X (Security Matter–X), made it all way to the director of the FBI at the time, J. Edgar Hoover. They contain investigation details belonging to one of the first cases of the American paranormal activity mythos. The FBI became involved in a case that was fueled by a post-war media raring to publish incredible stories in a world getting used to accelerating technological advancement. Much like today’s shifting media landscape, the early days of paranormal investigation were easy to take advantage of.
The events that were documented by the FBI in Crisman’s file are known as the Maury Island UFO hoax of June, 1947. Crisman was involved with “high weirdness,” according to a post by Best, that swirled around an island near Puget Sound, Washington. The reports helped solidify the imagery behind a couple of the UFO tropes we know and love. It was an early example of how folklore can turn very quickly into fake news and get widespread attention.
I asked Best about his thoughts as to why the files—which, the FBI has long claimeddo not exist—were named in such a way that, in complete coincidence, aligned with the paranormal show The X-Files. “I'm not sure, but if I had to guess it would be something like X for unknowns (as in variables),” he said to me in a Twitter message.
Crisman’s story of flying discs first appeared on the pages of the Tacoma Times in August. The reporter at the paper published the claims of Crisman and his business associate, Harold Dahl. Dahl was quoted as saying that, while patrolling the waters by boat near Maury Island, he witnessed multiple donut shaped discs appear in the sky. One of the discs, Dahl claimed, ejected molten material and allegedly crashed into and damaged the boat he was on. Dahl then explained that a person in a dark suit subsequently approached the scene and told them to keep quiet about the events. To many UFO historians, this was the beginning of the “Men in Black” conspiracy.
In an interview found in the FBI file, Crisman said he returned to the damaged boat the next day, where he collected ‘disc fragments' that became central to a hoax that spun widely out of control.
The FBI report included in the released documents explained that Crisman and Dahl sent samples of the ‘disc fragments’ to Chicago paranormal investigator Raymond Palmer for analysis. Palmer, who originally worked for Ziff-Davis’ Amazing Stories, was deeply involved in the earliest days of 20th century flying saucer myths and went on to publish Fate Magazine, which still investigates claims of the supernatural today.
After being notified by Palmer, Kenneth Arnold, a pilot who claimed to have witnessed the first widely publicised UFO sighting, got in touch with Dahl and Crisman. He travelled to Washington and arranged a meeting at the Winthrop Hotel in Tacoma with him, the two witnesses, and two Air Force intelligence officers.
This is where the story gets even weirder.
A day after the meeting with UFO witnesses, the B-25 Bomber carrying the two air force officers crashed and both were killed. Media immediately published the conclusions of anonymous phone calls (which were probably from Crisman, according to FBI findings detailed in the released documents) that the plane was carrying the disc fragments and it was deliberately shot down in a UFO cover up.
Those details were reported widely as fact by outlets like the Tacoma Times and Boise Statesman. The story made it all the way to the Chicago Times, which would become the Sun-Times the next year.
Of course, the FBI concluded the entire thing was a hoax for attention, with agents writing that there were no fragments on the plane. The flight, it said, came down due to an engine failure. Years later, Dahl eventually admitted the deception to a reporterafter being cajoled by his wife.
The FBI theorized that the explanation was much simpler than UFOs and government conspiracies. It was about money. The investigations found that Crisman and Dahl sought payment from the media outlets who wrote about their tall tale. It’s a slightly different refrain of today’s fake news issue, with greed inspiring the manipulation of mass communication.
This wouldn’t be the last America would hear of Fred Crisman. He would be later subpoenaed by Jim Garrison in the investigation of JFK assassination. During the federal investigation, forensic anthropologists had fingered him as being one of the “three tramps” arrested by Dallas PD on the same day as shooting of the president. He was later exonerated by the House Select Committee on Assassination. In the 60s, according to Aaron Gulyas in his book, The Paranormal and the Paranoid: Conspiratorial Science Fiction Television, Harold Dahl wrote to a UFO investigator that the show The Invaders had elements that were very similar to Crisman’s life and stories.
That isn’t to say the eventual rise of paranormal investigation was all bad. The same paranormal media outlets become known for skepticism and science. Fate magazine was not afraid to debunk the hoaxes or scams it covered in its investigations into the supernatural.
You can only hope our media outlets maintain that level of skepticism today.

Scientists Find a Quasicrystal from Outer Space in a Russian Meteorite
Scientists Find a Quasicrystal from Outer Space in a Russian Meteorite
The phrase “quasicrystal from outer space” sounds like the title to a science fiction thriller with a New Age twist. Buta study published Thursdayin Scientific Reportsannounced that a bonafide quasicrystal has indeed been discovered within the grainy remains of a meteorite found in the Khatyrka region of the Russian far east, five years ago. The paper marks the first time that a type of quasicrystal has been identified in nature before it was created artificially in a lab.
You might be asking: That’s neat, but what the heck is a quasicrystal? An understandable question. First identified by material scientist Dan Shechtman in 1982—who won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Chemistry for his discovery—quasicrystals are crystal-like arrangements of atoms that defy expectations of crystalline behavior with their “forbidden” rotational symmetries.
Regular crystal structures are periodically arranged in neatly fitted shapes like cubes (four-fold symmetry) or triangles (three-fold symmetry), but quasicrystals are arranged in non-periodic patterns such as pentagonal, five-fold symmetries.
Patricia Thiel, a chemistry and materials science expert based at Iowa State University, used this helpful analogy of tiling a floor to explain the unique properties of quasicrystals in this NPR article: “If you want to cover your bathroom floor, your tiles can be rectangles or triangles or squares or hexagons,” she said. “Any other simple shape won’t work, because it will leave a gap. In a quasicrystal, imagine atoms are at the points of the objects you’re using. What Danny [Shechtman] discovered is that pentagonal symmetry works.”
It should be impossible, but material science is full of surprises. While quasicrystals are most often studied via artificial synthesis in labs, the Khatyrka meteorite demonstrates that they can form naturally. Two previous quasicrystal forms have already been identified in the fragments of this outer space visitor, but both of those arrangements had been synthesized prior to their discovery in nature. However, the latest version features icosahedral symmetry, an exotic pattern featuring 60 points of rotational symmetry, somewhat like that of a soccer ball.

Paul Steinhardt, who serves as the Albert Einstein professor in science at Princeton University, was one of the authors of the new research. When I asked him why this one meteorite, which only survives as a few stray grains, seems to have such an abundance of quasicrystals, he told me there’s no simple answer.
“There are perhaps one or two other groups [of researchers] at most searching,” Steinhardt said. “Since we found an example, we have been focusing on understanding how this particular one formed since that will tell us something about the likelihood of finding others. But it is very very early times for these kinds of studies.”
“What is encouraging is that we have already found three different types of quasicrystals in the same meteorite, and this new one has a chemical composition that has never been seen for a quasicrystal,” he added. “That suggests there is more to be found, perhaps more quasicrystals that we did not know were possible before.”
Scientists have come a long way towards a better understanding of quasicrystals since their discovery some three decades ago, and they have found many practical applications for them in everything from frying pans to LED lights. But as Steinhardt emphasized, much of the field is still in its infancy, and there is much left to discover. Stay tuned.
On 8 July 1947, a newspaper called the Roswell Daily Record published a front page article that sparked America’s most infamous brush with aliens. The headline read: “RAAF Captures Flying Saucer On Ranch in Roswell Region.”
Colonel Phillip Corso, Sr. was an Army intelligence officer who served on Eisenhower’s National Security Council. Following his 21-year military career, he served as a military analyst. He made a public figure of himself by acknowledging that he personally witnessed deceased extraterrestrials from the Roswell crash.
In the following video, he discusses this initial encounter, as well as having seen UFOs travel at 4,000 miles an hour on radar. He discusses how, during his employment in R&D, he was given fragments of extraterrestrial technologies from various crashes. His job was to seed industry with these technologies, informing them that they were from earthly foreign sources.
Many conspiracy theorists call the Roswell incident to be one of the most obvious pieces of evidence covered up by the U.S. government regarding extra-terrestrial life on Earth. It is accounts like Corso’s that fuel such thoughts.
Corso describes the deceased aliens as having a brain completely different than that of humans. They had no nose or mouth, no digestive system, and no sex organs. “They are more humanoid beings that anything else,” he says in the video. “Their spaceship is composed of durable metals and are biological in nature; nothing like we every seen.”
Now in his 80s, he attributes the burying of the information to fear, but says we can no longer rely on that, because it’s a distant reality.
“People want to know the truth,” he says, urging that the young people of America have a right to know. He says, contrary to popular belief, they won’t panic. “They aren’t going to pull their hair out, they want to hear this.”
Throughout the interview, it seems Corso is beyond aggravation for what could have been, mostly because he has come to terms with the fact that, when his UFO sightings occurred, he lived in a time when people were more accepting of what the government told, and didn’t tell them. Today? not so much.
“They are sick of being lied to,” he says. And goes on to say that, because the government is so big and so vast, if you leave important information alone, it will cover itself up. This is perhaps the most notable point of his interview. In a day and age where there is so much changing so quickly, yet people are finally beginning to have a voice, question the government, politics, and so much more, we need to take advantage of this newfound strength, boldness and individuality and use it to create communities that value the truth.
Colonel Philip Corso, author of the book The Day After Roswell, which discusses his revelations concerning his role in a classified program to seed extraterrestrial technologies into the private sector, is one of the most vital whistleblowers to date. Give this interview, and many more of his, a watch.
In the search for alien life, conspiracy theorists claim they have spotted a UFO crossing the moon.
The object appeared as the Miami Observatory in Florida streamed a live feed of the moon's surface earlier this month.
It is unclear what the dark disc-shaped object is, but a well-known UFO enthusiast suggests that it is a craft created by an intelligent species.

The mysterious object appeared as the Miami Observatory in Florida streamed a live feed of the moon's surface earlier this month
The video was re-posted on YouTube by UFOVNI UFO Sightings, who named it 'UFO crossing the moon'.
Scott C Waring, a well-known UFO enthusiast, wrote on his website, UFOsightingsdaily.com: 'It's not a man-made object, because there are not solar panel wings on it to gather energy.
'There are no antennas on it for transmitting, also the surface is not completely round, but has a rough edge to it.
'Looks like a bio-mechanically grown UFO.'
But YouTube users seem less convinced.
User fantis07 commented: 'It looks like a tennis ball thrown before the telescope! ', while another said: 'It's just a rock orbiting the moon...'

UFOs appearing on the moon are a favourite topic for conspiracy theorists.
In November, a clip appeared on YouTube claiming to show 'hundreds' of UFOs taking off from the lunar surface at once.
The video claimed to give a clear view of these spaceships going around and behind the lunar surface, which some think are stationed on the moon to protect it from humans - although it could be nothing more than an optical illusion.

DID ALIENS BUILD A LANDING SITE ON THE MOON?
A 3.5-mile (5.6km) high structure was spotted in images from Google Moon, with some believing it to be a 'launch pad' that was constructed by aliens.
Now, however, a researcher working with Nasa's LROC moon-mapping mission claims the strange mark is nothing more than a crater within a crater.
Moon puzzle! Alien hunter spots bizarre antenna object on moon
A conspiracy website claimed the spire was 'probably built to accommodate a very large vessel so that it could dock safely without landing.'
Speaking to Huffington Post, the scientist explained the appearance of a tower is an artifact generated from the process of putting the mosaic of images together 'In the high sun images, the bright craters are more easily seen, but there's nothing there that is unusual compared to any other areas on the moon.'

ET Plasma Entity or Project Blue Beam In effect – Caught On Camera
ET Plasma Entity or Project Blue Beam In effect – Caught On Camera
A recent viral video which has been released into the public domain, apparently showing a plasma entity over Arizona, has some people now fearing the artificial apocalypse draws near. But could this be something else, something not of this world?
This extremely controversial video was recently posted to Facebook and other social media sites, and in a very short time period, it was viewed and shared literally thousands of times. According to the person who uploaded this video, the footage was shot this month (November 2016) in Arizona and the comment section proves one thing: people are alarmed about what implications the presence of this plasma entity might have and most importantly, exactly WHAT is it!?
The creepy video shows an undisclosed unknown neighborhood somewhere in Arizona on what appears to be a dark and overcast day when all of a sudden, a huge streak of electric blue light is seen ascending through the clouds. The ethereal jet appears to be left behind by a capsule-looking object that bursts through the damp and dark atmosphere. Before strangely disappearing from view, the object makes contact with another entity and this could be interpreted as a docking process between two very distinct UFOs. But upon closer inspection, things become even more strange and alarming!?
Something strange is going on!?
When this bizarre video is slowed right down and zoomed in, the details of the first object become rather clear to say the least. Its shape is eerily reminiscent of an elongated, extraterrestrial-looking head. The object it comes into contact with bears a striking similarity to what appears to be an alien hand with long un-human like fingers. The ‘hand’ then reaches down from above the heavy rain clouds and grasps the trailing alien head. Both objects then disappear from view as the blue plasma-like ejecta slowly dissipates, as if nothing had ever happened.
This odd event takes place at least a few miles above ground, which suggests that both objects are incredibly huge. They make no attempt to shield themselves from view and this is an important detail. Whoever or whatever was behind this otherworldly apparition wanted to be seen by those below – could this be some kind of ‘forced’ disclosure by the ET’s??
If these strange objects are extraterrestrial in nature, it must mean they understand and make use of symbolism. An alien hand reaching out and grabbing an alien head and then disappearing from view might signify their intentions of withdrawing from our planet, or could this possibly mean the complete opposite and a sign of things to come?!
This could also mean that they are willing to offer us an unfiltered view of their appearance and that is why they chose elements of their own anatomy. Since they have been studying us for a very long time, they may know the importance of the head and hand in our modern day languages and cultures. These two parts signify intelligence and action and perhaps by employing these symbols, they encourage us to take our intellect into our own hands. Or could this be government propaganda, i.e Project Blue Beam ?? (click here for more on this).
Maybe ‘IF’ ET’s created this crazy spectacle in the skies above Arizona, they could have chosen these elements arbitrarily and to each, his own interpretation works best!?
PLEASE CHECK OUT THE INCREDIBLE VIDEO BELOW:
But and it is a big but, if this bizarre occurrence was not the work of alien beings but instead an internal event, things could quite possibly turn much more sinister and darker!
One of the most popular modern conspiracy theories revolves around the world known Blue Beam Project and the global changes it would entail. Apparently a major pet project of the New World Order (NWO) Project Blue Beam will seek to simulate an apocalypse scenario and introduce the world to its new potential overlords. Many truth seekers around the world agree that Blue Beam will consist of four consequential steps.
Project Blue Beam – coming to a town near you?
The Four Stage Approach
The first step would have to do with the breakdown of all accepted knowledge regarding the world’s past and major events that led to the formation of various religions and beliefs. According to Biblioteca Pleyades, this first step will deal with “staging earthquakes at certain precise locations around the planet where supposed new ‘discoveries’ will finally explain that the meanings of the basic doctrines of all the world’s major religions are ‘wrong.’”
The recent increase in worldwide seismic activity seems to prove Step 1is well underway. Various theorists claim that either HAARP or CERN are behind the recent wave of earthquakes that hit Italy, New Zealand and Japan.
Step two of the Blue Beam Project would apparently involve an enormous space show, generated by advanced holograms and laser projections in all corners of the globe. Hit by its hidden fears, humanity would feel vulnerable, and mayhem would take over major cities as the prophetic visions of the world’s religions would play in the sky above them. Carefully-simulated attacks would rise panic to unprecedented levels.
Steps three revolves around advanced LF (low frequency), VLF (Very Low Frequency) and ELF (Extra Low Frequency) transmissions that would directly interfere with the subjects’ (read: us) brainwaves, leading them into believing their divinity is communicating with them.
Once this maneuver is successful, the world is ready and the stage is set for the introduction of the so-called New Messiah who would establish worldwide peace at the cost of everyone’s freedom.
Project Blue Beam is one of the most hideous scenarios and it’s little wonder people shiver at the mere thought of it happening. The prospect of this recent video being proof that the gears of Blue Beam are set in motion is troubling, to say the least.
Thankfully, we have one main weapon on our side and that is ‘Knowledge’. It’s much harder to be fooled when you know you’re being tricked. Keep your eyes open and don’t believe what you’re being told. Pass information through your judgement’s filter and be watchful.
U.I.P SUMMARY
Our personal take on this incredible video is that this could be showing us the activity of some kind of a far advanced extraterrestrial intelligence, but then again it could also be a false flag event created by the elite – see Project Blue Beam!
This creepy footage has yet to be debunked and as it stands is currently the real deal! There are many incredible sightings around the world at the moment, but we have to be careful to ensure this is not a build up to some kind of worldwide hoax led by the Illuminati to control and divide us – Please click HERE for more information on PROJECT BLUE BEAM!
The couple claimed the UFO appeared over their car in Roswell.
A married couple have reported to the Mutual UFO Network (MUFON) a bizarre UFO appearing over their car as they stopped in the town in New Mexico, which was the scene of an infamous alleged flying saucer crash in July 1947.
The unnamed woman, who made the report, claimed about 24 hours later she saw a black helicopter with a mystery large load hanging underneath.
MUFON, based in the US, is the world's biggest organisation dedicated to UFO and alien research, and keeps a database of sightings submitted by the public.
She reported to MUFON she and her husband were driving from Albuquerque to Carlsbad when they stopped in Roswell for food, before heading off again.
She wrote: "Stopping at a red light, behind a couple cars, in our truck we both noticed, and said out loud, the object that was coming straight towards us from the dark sky.
"I didn't have time to take out my camera or to think really because I didn't want to miss what was happening.
"The object had lights on all ends, the front (or back) was more triangular with bright white lights, the back (or front) which was closest to us was more rounded but still triangular and had bright red, green and blue lights shining down.
"It was larger than our truck, appeared to be a solid object and appeared out of "nowhere" and coming straight towards us."
She said she had no idea what it was and she and her husband dismissed an optical illusion.
She added: "So we first noticed it being about no more than 20 feet in front of us about eye level, it slowly and at the same time quickly moved right to us and then stopped and hovered right over the top of our truck.
"I thought I would be able to look out the back window and continue to follow its motion, but it was no where in sight when I did and at the same time the traffic light was turning green and we started driving forward."
She said: "like did that really just happen and where did the thing go?
"Also, I didn't have time to think in the moment, but later wondered, did the other cars see it too? They must have.
"My husband's account of what occurred are right in line with everything that happened.
"I felt like it could have been a dream, but it was definitely real life.
"All this happened over the span of maybe five to seven seconds and then everything was normalish again.
"I must also say that on our trip home the following night we did see a black helicopter carrying something large underneath it - it was too far in the distance to fully capture and I was exhausted of thinking by that point."
YouTube
A couple claim a UFO hovered over their car in Roswell, New Mexico.
Roswell has been at the heart of the UFO scene since the military announced in a press release it had found the remains of a crashed flying saucer in the nearby desert, in July 1947.
But the following day it retracted the statement, saying it was in fact a damaged US Air Force air balloon.
Witnesses later came forward to say there had been alien bodies within the "crashed craft", which – along with the wreckage – were then taken to the mysterious top-secret Area 51 military base in Nevada.
The town has been a hot bed of UFO sightings ever since with 44 cases repotted to MUFON since 2002.
MUFON investigates sightings such as this, but points out on its website that most so-called UFO sightings can be given a rational explanation.
A new patent from Samsung has surfaced in which we see a drone designed to look somewhat like a Frisbee. The drone, at least per the patent’s illustrations, feature a circular design with a couple feet on the underside and an open grille on the top, a rotor presumably hidden within. Unlike most other drones, this one resembles a small UFO or a flying food dehydrator tray.
he patent was spotted by Dutch website Galaxy Club; you can view the patent here (PDF warning), but it’s in Korean, so you’ll probably have to copy the text into Google Translate to read it for yourself. According to a Google-translated version of the patent, it was registered today to Samsung Electronic Co.
In addition to showing a bunch of illustrations of the drone, the patent describes it as being made of metal and synthetic resin with a camera integrated into the dome-shaped region on the bottom, which will be transparent to facilitate the camera. Samsung says the design is inspired by “disk-shaped spacecraft.”
Though the patent indicates that some aspects of the drone design could be modified (it is described in some areas as a “partial design”), it appears this is the general design and characteristics the company is going for. No other details about the drone are provided in the patent, however, such as size, power, or what kind of camera it may pack. As with any patent, it’s possible we’ll never actually see this hit shelves as a real product.

Never Before Revealed In Full: 1st Ever Written Evidence on RAF Bentwaters
Never Before Revealed In Full: 1st Ever Written Evidence on RAF Bentwaters
Published on Aug 27, 2016
In this exclusive Earth Mystery News video interview, Larry Warren both reads and comments on his original letter written to his mother January 6, 1981 reporting a UFO sighting at the R.A.F. Bentwaters base, otherwise known as the Rendlesham Forest Incident, predating the now famous Halt Memorandum by a week and is the FIRST written piece of original evidence existing on the topic.
In December 1980, Larry Warren was a member of the Air Force security police stationed at RAF Bentwaters, a NATO base in Great Britain. On the night of the 28th he was on guard duty when he was taken by truck to join other Air Force personnel to investigate a disturbance in a Rendlesham Forest about five miles away, which turned out to be a landed UFO with 3 Beings who appeared from the unidentified craft. This was the third night of UFO activity in the area and by far the most profound. When the men were debriefed the next day, they were warned to tell no one about what they had seen-as “bullets are cheap.”
What is of profound significance here is that this happened in the forest between the two NATO Bases where nuclear missiles were being stored illegally in violation of the Geneva Convention. The significance of secrecy for this event is that this was a nuclear tampering UFO case. The (ONI) Office of Naval Intelligence and the (AFSS) Air Force Security Service came to the base to brief the military witnesses and impose a veil of secrecy that continues until this day.
And so began what would turn out to be the best documented and most significant military-UFO incident in history.
Known as the man who blew open this case publicly, Larry Warren reads the letter he wrote to his mother when he was 19 years old and reflects about what he said for this EMN exclusive interview.

Incredible aerial timelapse reveals how the mysterious Area 51 has expanded over the last 30 years
Satellite images show a second runway has been constructed and on-site infrastructure vastly expanded
BY COREY CHARLTON
EVER since the 1950s, the US government’s Area 51 – located deep within the remote Nevada desert – has been the subject of intense conspiracy theories.
But now Google Maps has offered a rare glimpse of the mysterious government site – revealing a massive build up of infrastructure at the base over the past 30 years.

Satellite imagery recorded annually since 1984 shows a rapid expansion of buildings and runways at the base.
This includes the construction of a second runway and what appears to be an extension of the first.
Buildings are also being constructed into the side of a nearby mountain – though what they contain remains a mystery.

The US Air Force Base, around 80 miles from Las Vegas, is thought to be used for the development and testing of experimental aircraft.
Many conspiracy theorists claim that the base has been used for reverse engineering of an alleged crashed alien spacecraft at Roswell.

While the largest tech platforms continue to assure us that eliminating misinformation is both a) very important to them, and b) impossible, Google’s search results were hijacked today by fake news about space aliens caught on camera “sucking energy from the sun.” A search for “aliens” turns up a breathless report from UK tabloid Metro about the alleged energy-sucking, which is sourced to a grainy video of unknown origin posted by an anonymous “UFO fan channel.” (We are not linking to this report on purpose!)
The bogus story is newly prominent on Google’s search results page, following a recent redesign that gives added weight to “top stories” in an effort to give Google more of a real-time feel. The new design also serves to highlight articles that use Google’s Accelerated Mobile Pages format, a competitor to Facebook’s Instant Articles format that makes stories load faster on mobile devices. As Kyle Chayka reported yesterday in these pages, publishers are using AMP and Instant Articles to camouflage themselves as legitimate — and platforms aren’t saying anything about what they plan to do about it.
Aliens aren’t the only fake news you’ll find in “top stories.” A quick search for the Loch Ness Monster turns up a credulous piece in the Scottish newspaper Press and Journal reporting that sightings of the (fake) monster were at their highest levels since 2016, according a local crackpot who keeps a list of these things. (The Press and Journal wrote a nearly identical story the year before, bylined by the famous journalist “REPORTER.” The story quoted the same crackpot, and presumably enjoyed a similar surge in search traffic at the time.)
The publishers of these articles deserve their share of blame, of course. Every media company is locked in a death match for readers’ attention, and headlines have become much more sensationalist as a result. (The other two links in “aliens” results today are deeply misleading, but contain a germ of truth. Research cited in the second result refers to the possibility of microbial life — not the “alien” depicted in the accompanying image.)
But by making every story look the same and advertising them as “top stories,” Google has conferred upon them a legitimacy they do not deserve. Most Americans who see fake news believe it. It beggars belief that a company that became a behemoth for the quality of its search results now presents nonsense as fact.

North Wales X Files: MoD contacted by MP over UFO 'buzzing' near RAF Valley Anglesey
North Wales X Files: MoD contacted by MP over UFO 'buzzing' near RAF Valley Anglesey
Incident appeared in documents released by the National Archives on UFO reports across the UK
Reports an unidentified flying object was spotted “buzzing” near the tower on the RAF Valley base on Anglesey emerged in 1990
In 1990 an unidentified flying object was spotted “buzzing” the tower at the RAF Valley base onAnglesey.
The claimed sighting on October 16 that year was taken seriously by the local MP at the time, Ieuan Wyn Jones.
He wrote to the Ministry of Defence (MoD) asking for reassurances over the incident.
However, the MoD replied to Mr Jones, who later became the Welsh Government’s Deputy First Minister, stating staff could not remember the incident and it hadn’t been recorded in the air traffic log books.
The ministry suggested it could be explained by another aircraft flying over the base.
“Certainly such an incident would have been notified to the senior air traffic control officer had it occurred,” the MoD said.
“Military aircraft from a variety of RAF establishments regularly undertake low-flying training sorties over the North Wales area and it’s likely that a routine military low-flying training sortie could account for the observation.”
RAF Sea King helicopter
The incident appeared in documents released by the National Archives on UFO reports across the UK.
It is not the first time unidentified objects has been seen in the skies over Anglesey.
On February 7 2001, strange lights were spotted in the North Wales sky over two towns just minutes apart.
The first sighting took place above Caernarfon at 7.40pm of a “green” and “red” object that on first sight “looked like a star”.
Then five minutes later and 25 miles away, another sighting occurred over Amlwch on Anglesey at 7.45pm.
The sightings appeared in an official Government UFO report which had recorded hundreds of strange objects spotted in the sky across the UK that year.
On December 8, 1980 the British musician was shot dead by Mark David Chapman outside his residence in New York City, US.
Conspiracists have long claimed Chapman was in fact working for the US government – FBI documents released in 2010 suggested they tried to deport Lennon on a number of occasions for his music and influence.
But one element of his life continues to confuse the most scientific of supporters.
Six years before his death – on August 23, 1974 – Lennon claimed to have come face-to-face with a UFO.
Describing it from the rooftop of his New York apartment just after the incident, the 34-year-old said: “I saw a UFO and it went down the river, turned right at the United Nations, turned left and then down the river.

“It wasn’t a helicopter and it wasn’t a balloon. It was silent, it looked dark and had white lights.”
His secretary and lover at the time May Pang corroborated his story in her book Loving John, where she went on to explain it as a “large, circular object coming towards us.”
And – according to Pang – it wasn’t the first time the singer encountered extra-terrestrial beings.
In an interview with Larry Warren – from the Merseyside Anomalies Research Association – she said: “He [Lennon] told me that more than once he suspected he had been abducted as a child back in Liverpool.
“And he felt that experience was responsible for making him feel different from other people for the rest of his life.”

STRANGE: Lennon's Walls and Bridges album depicts a UFO
The star’s obsession with UFOs continued after his experience and in his design for the Walls and Bridges album cover, an alien spacecraft is the focal point.
Soon after his completion of the album, Lennon reunited with former lover Yoko Ono and retired from the music business for more than five years.
And it is this that has captivated the minds of so many.
Almost as soon as Lennon returned from his hiatus – with new ideas and an album – he was killed.

Did a UFO just leave earth through a wormhole? Shocking verdict on exploding fireball
Did a UFO just leave earth through a wormhole? Shocking verdict on exploding fireball
A MONSTER fireball that exploded over the Earth, turning night into day, was a "wormhole opening so an alien spacecraft could depart for another dimension"
Well, that is if you are inclined to believe an alien conspiracy theorist's verdict on the event seen over Norway and Siberia.
Amazing images of the huge fireball - said to have been a meteorite burning up in Earth's atmosphere - were taken in Norway and Siberia and posted online as pictures and videos.
But, Scott C Waring, editor of ufosightingsdaily.com, has come up with another explanation.
In a blog entitled "UFO Forms Giant Worm Hole Over Norway Turning Night Into Day", he wrote: "The UFO is forming a black hole around it...do you see?
"It's not exploding, it's creating the hole first...then it will enter with a flash of light and the hole is gone.
"What you see here is a UFO opening up a wormhole to just disappear."
Ronny Tertnes
The fireball was said to turn night into day over Norway.
Mr Waring admitted he had digitally manipulated the images that accompanied his blog.
He added: "I added light and all around the UFO, you see blackness.
"It's not natural...it's a black hole being formed by the UFO to shoot through time and space.
"Some alien was too lazy to leave Earths orbit and just took off in one hell of a hurry."
Mr Waring is known for taking great leaps to reach conclusions when speculating about mysterious images, using his imagination, rather than science to fill in the blanks.
RonnyTertnes*UFOSD
SCott C Waring captioned the fireball as being an alien wormhole.
"I've seen something similar while I was driving down I-10 in 1987 at about 3am in the Florida panhandle.
"There were 4 other cars on the highway. We all pulled over. Everyone agreed it was not a meteor.
"It lit up the woods around us like daylight.
"Then a large object flew across the sky. It was glowing bright blue. It got halfway across the sky, then disappeared in another bright blue flash almost as bright as the first.
"I personally believe these wormholes with objects flying out of them are alien spacecraft exiting, then entering warp speed."

The mystery of Queensland’s eerie Min Min lights
The mystery of Queensland’s eerie Min Min lights
The Min Min lights have confounded the people of Western Queensland for a century.
“WE’VE heard about the lights all our lives,” says Genevieve Hammond, who lives in Boulia, an outback Queensland town, 1700 kms west of Brisbane.
Seeing the “eerie” light — often described as intensely bright floating balls — has been said to reduce grown men to tears.
It’s just one example of the folklore that has grown around them. Local kids were warned to behave or the glow would get them; Aboriginal people suspected them of being spirits while local legend decreed if the light ever caught up with you, you would surely perish.
Ms Hammond had heard the stories but she’d never seen the lights until she went camping with her husband John in the vast tree-starved flatness of western Queensland’s Channel Country.
The sky was clear, the night was cold and there was nothing and no one near. Yet the Hammonds weren’t alone.
“We were on a remote cattle station,” Ms Hammond, who runs Boulia’s Desert Sand motel, told news.com.au.
“We were camping out and we saw this greenish oval shaped blurry light bobbing up and down.
Boulia locals have become accustomed to the weird light that seems to follow people around.
Source:News Limited
“It was parallel to the horizon, about a kilometre away, and seemed to be a metre from the ground. It moved very slowly to the left and then came back on itself and it went on like this for about 15 minutes.
“It was silent and very eerie. We were trying to think, could it be a neighbour? A car?” she said. “But the nearest homestead in that direction was 120 kms away. The next day Johnno went over to where the light was and there was nothing.
“It couldn’t have been anything else, there’s no other explanation, it was the Min Min light.”
Shelley Norton is Boulia Shire Council’s Tourism Officer. In the last year four visitors had reported encounters with the light, she said. “They come in and they don’t know what they’ve seen but you can guarantee that it’s the Min Min light.”
Boulia is ground zero for the glowing Min Min light.

Many visitors come looking especially for the light with the last sighting in September off the Boulia to Winton road.
“A family were camping and the husband got up in the middle of the night and went out to look at what he thought was the moon. Then he turned around and saw the actual moon. It was like there were two moons. Then one disappeared.
“Sometimes it’s a lone object that stays the same distance away, other times it seem to follow people, then splits into two or three and dances above the tree tops,” Ms Norton said.
“It’s very spooky and no one knows what it is.”
Boulia Mayor Rick Britton said the mysterious lights were the town’s claim to fame.
“Everyone has their quirk; Julia Creek has Burke and Wills and Birdsville the races. Boulia is renowned as being the land of the Min Min lights.”
The lights were first reported to have been seen above the ruins of the Min Min Hotel, 100km west of Boulia, in 1918. Although, it’s likely to have been seen by local Aboriginal people long before that.
The Mayor of Boulia Shire, Rick Britton, said the Min Min lights were rare but had been seen by many locals.

Since then they have been reported in many parts of the outback but glow ground zero is the Channel Country near Boulia.
There are many theories as to what he Min Min lights are. Fluorescent gases released from the barren earth, clouds of bioluminescent insects, a flock of fireflies perhaps, maybe even UFOs.
But Jack Pettigrew, a neuroscientist at the University of Queensland, thinks he’s solved the riddle.
“I experienced the phenomenon myself as well as hearing about it from graziers.”
He stumbled across it quite by accident more than a decade ago when he was searching for a rare bird that appears only at night near the town.
He and his team saw what they thought were the eyes of a fox reflected in their headlights.
“We were surprised that the bright spot of light was still there when we turned off the headlights.”
In his research paper, Mr Pettigrew described the light as having “fuzzy edges in rapid motion like a swarm of bees”, differing colours and that it moved “with a mind of its own”.
Caught in the Min Min’s glow, grown men could cry, he said.
“They would never be identified but the fear was evident,” he told news.com.au, “It was very scary.”
They’re not spirits or UFOs, said Mr Pettigrew, but they are something very strange indeed.
He believes the lights are a nocturnal form of the rare Fata Morgana mirage, a phenomenon where ideal climactic conditions can see light travel over vast distances and even cross horizons.
An image of a standard mirage where, typically, hot surfaces appear to be water.

In a Fata Morgana mirage objects can appear far closer then they are in reality and can even seem to float above the horizon.

The Fata Morgana is thought to be the cause of a range of strange sightings including startled sailors seeing the Irish cliffs appear in the middle of the ocean and beachgoers witnessing boats hovering above the sea.
Mirages are fairly common, such as when hot road surfaces appear to reflect the sky.
But the Fata Morgana only occurs when, unusually, the air is colder on the ground than above. Called a temperature inversion (because air is usually warmer at ground level) under certain circumstances light can be bent across the atmosphere creating projections of images from hundreds of kilometres away that would be otherwise invisible.
Mr Pettigrew tested the theory by driving his car 10km into the desert and parked it behind a small hill to ensure it was completely obscured.
Outside of Boulia, Jack Pettigrew witnessed a classic Fata Morgana where a ridge of far away hills. above, appeared and then slowly melted away.

“When I pointed the vehicle in the direction of the camp, observers saw a light floating above the horizon.” Sure enough the lights changed colour and trembled. When he switched off the headlights, the apparition vanished.
He concluded the mysterious Min Min he originally saw was likely to be the projected headlights from a road as much as 350km way. They later found at a road train had passed along that road at the same time.
The next morning, Mr Pettigrew saw an even more arresting sight. As dawn broke, in the distance, he saw a row of hills where none had existed before. When the ground warmed up the hills - which in reality were far further away - melted into the ground.
While this wasn’t a Min Min it supported his theory that the area was perfect for various forms of the Fata Morgana.
The flat surface and gullies of the Channel Country trapped cold air and threw up less obstacles to block the mirage.
Boulia markets itself has the heart of the land of the Min Min light. Notoriously difficult to predict, a museum in the town — the Min Min Encounter — tells the story of the lights.
Mr Pettigrew told news.com.au he wasn’t convinced the town wanted to find a reason behind the lights and preferred it to remain an unsolved mystery to attract tourists.
But Mayor Britton seemed to be warming to the mirage hypotheses. “The different temperatures in the atmosphere create something like a house of mirrors, like a submarine telescope,” he said.
Nevertheless, some townsfolk had other explanations for the light, Mr Britton said.
“There was an old character here and he said he’d thought a lot about. In his serious opinion it must be — an emu with a torch stuck up his backside.”
Some UFO hunters have come up with video evidence that the U.S. Air Force is allegedly conducting night vision alien technology tests at the Nellis Air Force Base. This followed sighting of UFO’s at the training range of the high security area.

The U.S. Air Force is conducting late night tests of alien UFO technology in secret at the Nellis Air Force Base, according to UFO hunters who reported heavy UFO activity in the military area near Las Vegas in southern Nevada.
UFO hunter and eyewitness Steven Barone, who — in Nov. 16 — uploaded on YouTube a video that he shot from his backyard on the night of Nov. 15, said he saw alien UFOs circling in the night sky above the Nellis AFB.
Barone asserts it as a clear case of stealth UFO activity at the base and a trial of "night vision technology".
The highly secretive Area 51 base of the USAF is located at the Nellis AFB's Test and Training Range.
Eye Witness Claim Endorsed By Veteran
The claim of the eyewitness on UFO activity was corroborated by veteran UFO hunter Scott C. Waring. He said that the video was explicit and three alien UFO crafts were indeed flying over the Nellis base.
"These objects are flying over a USAF base in that area so no one can travel over there to take a look," Waring said in a blog post of UFO Sightings Daily on Dec. 4.
He also said that the USAF was testing alien technology procured from extraterrestrial allies.
"It looks like the USAF is testing some of the alien craft that was given to the USAF in good faith."
He also recalled the crash of a similar craft in 2008 at Needles, California and wondered why the USAF still has not gained the expertise in flying them.
The vast military area is spread over more than 5,000 square miles in the southern Nevada desert.
Reverse-Engineering Plan Of Propulsion Technology
Meanwhile, some UFO researchers said that Pentagon has been recovering UFOs from crash sites for reverse engineering. A case in point was the crash site outside Roswell in New Mexico, where an alien saucer crashed in the late 1940s.
Some UFO hunters also allege that the restricted area in the Nellis AFB houses a secret community of technologically advanced aliens called Tall Whites.
They say the Tall Whites are in a pact with the U.S. government for exchanging advanced aerospace technology in lieu of other resources.
They also allege Tall White Aliens are living in an underground base at the Nellis AFB and the alien scientists, engineers, and technicians are backing Pentagon's aerospace projects.
Warin said the alien UFOs were given by the Tall Whites who are now operating from a secret base at the Nellis AFB.

RENDLESHAM MYSTERY: UFO key witness speaks for FIRST TIME and says object WAS alien
RENDLESHAM MYSTERY: UFO key witness speaks for FIRST TIME and says object WAS alien
A KEY witness in the UK's most baffling mass UFO sighting has gone on record for the first time about what he saw hovering over an air base 36 years ago.
Steve Longero (pictured) has spoken publicly for the first time about the Rendlesham UFO.
The Rendlesham mystery has been dubbed Britain's Roswell after the mystery and infamous UFO crash that allegedly happened outside the town in New Mexico, USA in July 1947.
The UK alien sighting happened when three US officers based at RAF Bentwaters claimed a "triangular shaped craft" landed in neighbouring woods in the early hours of December 26 1980.
The case was later investigated by the UK Ministry of Defence (MoD), but it concluded there was no evidence of alien visitations or any national security risk, and the sightings were most likely the result of beams of light from a nearby coastal lighthouse.
Steve Longero, a former US Airforce military police officer based at the airbase at the time, has remained tight-lipped about what he saw in Rendlesham Forest ever since.
But, now in a magazine interview, he has revealed he believes what he saw came from outer space and could have been aliens.
He said: "I think it was something not from this world.”
Mr Longero was guarding the weapons storage area when the alarms started going off.
He said: "While on duty that night we had a very sophisticated alarm system and everything just went off.
“And then I could see these lights over the treetops, and I was thinking, what’s going on?
He is the latest in a line of former military personnel to speak out over the case, including retired Colonel Charles Halt, 76, who was base deputy commander at the time and features in a newly-published book about the case.
Mr Halt claimed the officers who first saw the lights then a UFO "on the floor", could not account for a 40 minute period while searching in the woods when their communication systems went "off air".
The three officers - John Burroughs, Bud Steffens, and James Penniston, told the MoD of feeling "static" as they observed the object's flashing lights and hieroglyphic-like markings.
Mr Halt then said on the evening of December 27 1980 that officers had shouted "It's back, the UFO's back".
Mr Halt went to investigate with a team who found three 1.5inch "impact holes", damage to the canopies of trees and "higher radiation levels" in the "landing" area.
A plaster cast was later taken of one of the holes, but mysteriously disappeared from a box it was stored in.
Mr Halt said soon after they saw a mysterious object in a field between the woods and a farmhouse with "a red light moving."
JONAUSTIN
Charles Halt at a Rendlesham UFO conference in 2015.
He said: "It came towards us into the forest, moving, bobbing up and down in the trees. It was oval, about 100 to 150 yards away, with a dark centre and red around it."
He claimed there were "sparks" coming from it and after a minute it "exploded and disappeared."
They then spotted objects in the sky, 3,000 to 4,000ft up.
In May, a documentary revealed the testimonies of two former military technicians who claimed a UFO WAS caught on radar and seen from the control tower of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge as well as in Rendlesham Forest, near Woodbridge, in Suffolk, at the time of the sightings.
UFOs and Nukes: The Secret Link Revealed, which is available to view online on Vimeo, revealed the accounts of Jim Carey and Ike Barker who were said to be manning the radars and control tower at the time.
Despite an MOD investigation the Rendlesham Forest incident remains unexplained (stock image)
Steve Longero has remained tight-lipped for more than three decades
But now the retired U.S. Airforce police officer has gone on the record for the first time and said: “I think it was something not from this world.”
The incident – dubbed the British Roswell – took place over three nights between 26 and 28 December, in 1980.
Military personnel from nearby RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge, including the deputy base commander, witnessed strange lights in the forest and hovering above the twin NATO airbases which were on high alert as the Cold War was at its peak.
Steve, who served as a police sergeant in the USAF, was guarding the weapons storage area when the alarms started going off.
He said: “While on duty that night, we had a very sophisticated alarm system and everything just went off.
“And then I could see these lights over the treetops, and I was thinking, what’s going on? Then they started sending people out there and at first it was hard to believe, all these bright lights. It was hard to take in.
"Well from what I remember the lights, fluorescent lights, kind of a glow, like a reddish glow. I remember going out there.”
The Rendlesham Forest incident: Britain’s most famous UFO sighting
The Rendlesham Forest incident took place in December 1980 over a series of at least two nights. On December 26, 1980, military personnel at the twin bases of RAF Bentwaters and RAF Woodbridge in Suffolk saw a strange light in Rendlesham Forest, which lies between the two bases. Three men were sent out to investigate where two of them encountered a small, triangularshaped craft. One man, Jim Penniston, got close enough to touch the side of the object. He and another of the airmen present, John Burroughs, made sketches of the craft for witness statements Two nights later Deputy Base Commander, Lieutenant Colonel Charles Halt and his team then encountered the UFO. He said later: "Here I am, a senior official who routinely denies this sort of thing and diligently works to debunk them, and I'm involved in the middle of something I can't explain."
Despite an MOD investigation the Rendlesham Forest incident remains unexplained.

Steve went out into the forest where he remembers seeing a large group of other military personnel had already gathered including Staff Sgt Jim Burroughs, Airman First Class Edward Cabansag and Airman First Class Larry Warren.
Describing the UFOs, he said: “They looked like fluorescent coloured lights, like red and green, glowing lights and that’s what they looked like.I could see them hovering over the treetops like an eye that was almost following everybody.”
He added: “It was real kind of quiet and this thing hovering over the trees, and you were like kind of tracking it and like ‘what is this?’. And it was like following, it was like watching us, that’s what it looked like to us. It seemed like something watching us.
“From what I remember it was like aglow, it was really glowing like a reddish, greenish light. It was really glowing, like something was really hot and it was just glowing.”
JONNY DILLON
This letter is the MOD's response to Rendlesham Forest UFO incident
He also recalled seeing Colonel Charles Halt there, who made a tape recording describing how beams of light were being shone down by the UFO. He has written an explosive new book called The Halt Perspective describing his close encounter.
Mr Longero said: “Col Halt came afterwards, after all that was called in. I remember him turning up, that’s when they kind of gathered everyone around and said this is what we are going to do, and everybody kind of dispersed and did what they were told to do.
"I remember we had a little briefing right there and everybody was just like, we just could not believe what we were seeing. Your adrenalin was flowing and I remember people saying like ‘what is that?’.
NOT KNOWN
A drawing of the craft seen during the unexplained incident Rubbishing theories that the lights in the woods were caused by a lighthouse on the east coast, he laughed: “I don’t think so. Not unless the lighthouse could move. Unless they could float that thing in the air.
“And then, as people were getting close to this thing it kind of came nearer to us and then it would go forward and then go back and all of a sudden it just disappeared, like something out of Star Trek, it was like warp speed and we were all ‘what was that?’ it was gone and then that’s when they started doing all their investigations. After we secured the area they said okay, you’re gone, get out of here.”
Steve said he was debriefed a few days later and was told not to talk about what he saw as the base had nuclear weapons on site.
UFO investigator Philip Mantle, who interviewed Steve for Outer Limits Magazine, said: “Steve does not claim to be anything special but he wanted to emphasise that there were a lot of others involved who were witness to the events in question, many of whom have yet to add their voice to these events.
“Steve has confirmed the open secret that nuclear weapons were stored at RAF Bentwaters at the time although he did not personally witness any lights being shone onto the WSA.
“He has confirmed much of what Colonel Halt has already said on the record and he is in no doubt that Larry Warren was there.
“What is clear is that despite the best efforts of some this case will continue to be hotly debated for many years to come.”
Released in US theatres just a week ago, Arrival is quickly shaping up to be the science fiction movie of the year, a turn of events that almost no one—including the author himself—would’ve guessed based on its premise.
The story follows linguist Louise Banks (played by Amy Adams) and theoretical physicist Ian Donnelly (played by Jeremy Renner) as they attempt to communicate with a pair of extraterrestrials whose spacecraft has just landed in Montana. For most of us, Arrival was just another entertaining alien flick, but for a handful of Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) researchers who are actually tasked with figuring out how to communicate with extraterrestrials, the film felt more like a documentary than a drama.
“I am so envious of Louise Banks because she gets to have a face to face with ET,” Messaging Extraterrestrial Intelligence (METI) International president Douglas Vakoch told Motherboard. “But in the scenarios that SETI and METI folks deal with there’s no possibility of that. Our idea of a snappy exchange with extraterrestrials is a decade—and that only works if the nearest star is populated.”
Prior to becoming the president of the recently founded METI International, which focuses on the controversial science of sending messages into space, Vakoch was the Director of Interstellar Message Composition at the SETI Institute in California. For a large part of his career, he has been trying to figure out how to communicate with an intelligent extraterrestrial species when you don’t even know the first thing about them and a message takes decades to reach its destination.
Although Amy Adams’ character makes it look easy in Arrival, the real art and science of talking to aliens—known as astrolinguistics or METI—is much more complicated, involving a healthy mix of linguistics, mathematics, physics, and imagination.
In Arrival, Renner’s character ribs Adams for her approach to communicating with the aliens, telling her that she does linguistics “like a mathematician.” Although this throwaway comment was made in jest, in real life that’s more or less how it’s done. As Vakoch pointed out, one of the luxuries enjoyed by Adams in the film is that she is able to communicate in real time with the aliens. But for the METI researchers sending messages into the cosmos, they are expecting decades—if not centuries—to elapse between sending a message and receiving a response, which fundamentally changes the way they think about constructing a message.
In the first place, it means that a message sent into the cosmos needs to be incredibly robust and ideally entirely self-referential. Unlike Arrival, Earthlings don’t have the ability to teach the recipients of their messages anything about it because the delay in communication is so long. So not only do METI researchers have to send the content of the message, but they also have to send instructions for how to read it, and these instructions must somehow be intelligible to the aliens as well.
What this means is that rather than trying to figure out how the structure of an alien’s language might uniquely shape their worldview (the theoretical basis of Arrival known as linguistic relativism) and basing a message off of that, METI researchers go in the opposite direction.
“We're looking for a cosmic Rosetta stone,” said Vakoch. “But the question is: What do us and the extraterrestrials both have in common?”
As you might expect, this question leads most METI researchers to languages rooted in mathematics and physics, which one would expect to be known to an alien civilization capable of mastering the technology to receive our message in the first place.
When a 20th century Dutch mathematician named Hans Freudenthal created LINCOS, the first language expressly designed for communicating with extraterrestrials, he used mathematical principles to discuss everything from the nature of time to what it means to love. In 2013, a Dutch mathematical astronomer named Alexander Ollongren created a second version of LINCOS, which communicates similar ideas couched in the language of symbolic logic and lambda calculus. In both of these instances, the lingua cosmica is self-contained and rooted in supposedly universal principles (mathematics and logic)—but it still might be unintelligible to an alien.
“Even if humans and extraterrestrials both have math and science, they're not necessarily interchangeable,” said Vakoch. “Maybe science starts out at different places depending on the biology or particular needs of the organism. There is a subtle truth that Arrival points toward, and that is the way we construct and talk about the world may reflect something idiosyncratic about our species.”
To illustrate his point, Vakoch cites the emergence of non-Euclidean geometry in the 19th century. For two millennia, Euclid’s view of a flat universe reigned supreme and pivoted on his fifth postulate, which states that two parallel lines will never intersect. But when a handful of European geometers in the 1800s replaced this axiom with its opposite—that two parallel lines actually can intersect—they fundamentally changed our view of reality by making space curved instead of flat.
The important point is that both geometries are internally consistent and have been used for innumerable scientific and mathematical discoveries. So just because we’re speaking the language of science or math to aliens doesn’t necessarily mean we’re talking about the same science and math.
With this in mind, Vakoch advocates for exploring dozens of different ways of trying to communicate with ET. He thinks that the idea of trying to create a self-contained message that can be delivered all at once is a product of the human desire to see a send and reply happen within one generation. If we abandon this idea and accept that interstellar communication is likely to happen over the course of centuries or millennia, it opens up radically new ways of attempting to establish communication with aliens.
The Arecibo telescope in Puerto Rico was used to send the first message into space.
In the half a century that elapsed between the first and second versions of LINCOS, there have been no shortage of ideas for how to talk to extraterrestrials. Some have relied on aural or visual components, such as the Voyager spacecraft which contained sound and images on a record. Likewise the first radio communication intended for aliens, known as the Arecibo message, was also an image which depicted pixelated humans and the Arecibo telescope. Unfortunately, these types of messages are banking on the idea that aliens will have aural and visual systems like us—but given that sight has independently evolved dozens of times on Earth alone, this idea might not be as farfetched as it seems.
Other common ideas take the form of massive data dumps or sending out computer programs that will be capable of being run by the aliens once they’ve got a basic grip on human coding paradigms. This was the idea behind CosmicOS, a computer program that would essentially use a role-playing game to teach aliens about Earth and that one time the entirety of Craigslist was sent into the cosmos (more of a publicity stunt than anything, but maybe aliens need a new divan?). Other strategies go back to hard science, like the RuBisCo Stars message which sent the DNA sequence for the protein used in plants for photosynthesis.
Whether any of these signals will ever reach or be intelligible to extraterrestrials is impossible to say, which is why Vakoch and his colleagues at METI International are focusing on exploring as many different message constructions as possible in the meantime. They hope to begin transmitting messages into the cosmos by the end of 2018, but for now the important thing is to have an open mind and active imagination, which for Vakoch is one of the main takeaways from Arrival.
“The thing I most liked about Arrival is that it captures the sort of openness to a new way of understanding the nature of reality that we need to be capable of to understand another civilization,” said Vakoch. “That's what we hope for in SETI and METI: that over the course of decades or centuries we’ll be able to come to understand how another civilization understands and talks about its world.”
