Positieve feedbacklus Het magnetische veld induceert vervolgens elektrische stromen.
Located billions of light-years away, the "Cosmic Owl" is a pair of colliding ring galaxies spotted by the JWST. It's also an "exceptional natural laboratory" for studying how galaxies evolve.
The "Cosmic Owl," as photographed by the James Webb Space Telescope. Each "eye" is an active galactic nucleus, and the "beak" is a nursery of stars.
A new study using JWST data has helped scientists spot an owl-faced object peering out at us from billions of light-years away. Formed through the extremely unusual collision of two rare ring galaxies, the structure also serves as a natural laboratory where researchers can study many of the processes accompanying the evolution of galaxies.
Galaxies come in several shapes, from swirling spirals like our home galaxy, the Milky Way, to the cigar-shaped M82. One slightly more peculiar type are ring galaxies, such as Hoag's Object. These galaxies form when a small galaxy cruises straight through its larger buddy, kicking out stars and gas through shock waves into a ring around a central core.
Ring galaxies are pretty rare, accounting for just 0.01% of all galaxies discovered so far. Even rarer, though, is a pair of ring galaxies detected when colliding — exactly what the "Cosmic Owl" is, as described June 11 in a preprint posted to arXiv. The paper has yet to be peer-reviewed, but the object has already been confirmed by another team that independently detected the same collision — which they dubbed the "Infinity galaxy" in a paper posted to arXiv June 19.
Mingyu Li, a doctoral student in the Department of Astronomy at Tsinghua University in China and the new study's first author, said he and his co-authors discovered the avian-like astronomical spectacle serendipitously.
"We were analyzing all radio sources using public JWST data in a very well-studied region called the COSMOS field," the largest mosaic of the sky, spanning 2 square degrees, he told Live Science in an email. Li added that the colliding galaxy pair immediately stood out because of JWST's high-resolution imaging capabilities.
These snapshots revealed that the galaxies are quite similar; apart from being ring galaxies, both are relatively tiny. Each has a diameter of roughly 26,000 light-years, or about a quarter the diameter of the Milky Way. Additionally, each galaxy's core — which is tightly packed with old stars around a supermassive black hole — forms an eye of the owl. Fine-scale JWST data shows that both black holes, each more than 10 million times the sun's mass, are furiously pulling in surrounding matter, making the galactic cores "active galactic nuclei."
The new study has documented a range of astronomical processes occurring across the "Cosmic Owl," as depicted in this image.(Image credit: Li et al.)
In contrast, the JWST images show that the "beak" — the collisional front between the two galaxies — is "a region of incredibly intense activity," Li said. Drawing on data from the Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array (ALMA) in Chile, the researchers found that the beak contains an enormous clump of molecular gas. Li described it as "the raw fuel for star formation," being squished by the galaxies' collision-related shock wave. The ALMA data also placed the owl's redshift at 1.14, or approximately 11 billion light-years from us.
Additionally, radio-frequency observations from the New Mexico-based Very Large Array suggest that a jet of charged particles spewing from one galaxy's black hole is slamming into and further compressing the molecular gas cloud. According to Li, the shock wave and the radio jet have together "triggered a massive burst of star formation," transforming the beak into a 'stellar nursery.'"
Simulations of galactic collisions show they last a few hundred million years. In this case, the researchers estimate the collision occurred 38 million years ago, meaning the owl's face will likely remain visible for a long time.
But the owl isn't just visually striking, Li said — it's also "an exceptional natural laboratory because it allows [researchers] to see several critical galaxy evolution processes happening simultaneously in one system."
In fact, the owl has already provided valuable insights about how galaxies form and grow. Li said the bursts of star formation triggered by the galactic collision and radio jets in the beak region "could be a crucial and previously underappreciated mechanism for the rapid and efficient conversion of gas into stars." This could help researchers understand how galaxies built their stellar mass so quickly in the universe's early history, he added.
The researchers plan to study the owl further to understand the physical processes that created it. Li said simulations of the galaxies' gas would help researchers "understand the precise conditions — such as the collision angle and the original structure of the galaxies — that could lead to the formation of such a rare, symmetric 'twin-ring' morphology."
The owl joins several bizarrely shaped astronomical phenomena that JWST previously spotted. These include a question-mark-shaped structure formed from galaxies and a wisp of gas from a newborn star that resembles a cat's tail.
47 Tucanae is the second-brightest globular cluster in the Milky Way and is home to millions of stars. Its core is very small and very bright, and discerning individual stars in the core is a rigorous test forthe Vera Rubin Observatory. Image Credit: NASA, ESA, and the Hubble Heritage (STScI/AURA)-ESA/Hubble Collaboration; Acknowledgment: J. Mack (STScI) and G. Piotto (University of Padova, Italy)
Astronomers have studied the globular cluster 47 Tucanae extensively, but still have many questions. It may have an intermediate mass black hole in its center like Omega Centauri is expected to have. There are reasons to believe it may be the remnant of a dwarf galaxy that was gobbled up by the Milky Way, like other GCs. Also like other GCs, its center is extraordinarily dense with stars, and astronomers aren't certain how far the cluster spreads. Individual stars in 47 Tuc are difficult to observe because they're so tightly packed in the center and because they're difficult to differentiate from field stars on its outer edges. Can the Vera Rubin Observatory help?
Early data from the Vera Rubin and its Legacy Survey of Space and Time (LSST) were designed to test and refine the telescope's system. But it's still good quality data, and researchers are using it to not only understand how the Vera Rubin Observatory (VRO) performs, but also for concrete science results.
New research used the VRO's observations of 47 Tuc to uncover more stellar detail, including identifying stars in its core and in its outer regions. It's titled "47 Tuc in Rubin Data Preview 1: Exploring Early LSST Data and Science Potential." The lead author is Yumi Choi from the National Science Foundations National Optical-Infrared Astronomy Research Laboratory in Tucson, Arizona.
"We present analyses of the early data from Rubin Observatory's Data Preview 1 (DP1) for the globular cluster 47 Tuc field," the researchers write in their paper. The data is from four nights of observations with the VRO's Commissioning Camera (ComCam). The ComCam is a smaller 144-megapixel version of the VRO's full 3200-megapixel LSST Camera. The observations were made in the standard multiple bands (ugriz). u: Ultraviolet, g: Green (visible light), r: Red (visible light). i: Near-infrared, z: Further near-infrared.
The left and middle images are both from the VRO's ComCam. The image on the right is from Gaia. In all images, the center of 47 Tuc is tightly packed with stars and saturated with light.
Image Credit: Choi et al. 2025.
The authors explain that they wanted to address challenges in separating stars in 47 Tuc's crowded center from background stars in both the Milky Way and the Small Magellanic Clouds. "We compile a catalog of 3,576 probable 47 Tuc member stars selected via a combination of isochrone, Gaia proper-motion, and color-color space matched filtering," they write.
"The LSST ComCam imaging provided valuable early photometric measurements, while also revealing challenges from crowding, particularly near the core of 47 Tuc and toward the SMC," the authors explain.
The researchers did more than just detect 3,576 probable stars. They also detected RR Lyrae variable stars, which are common in globular clusters, and eclipsing binaries. "Further, we successfully crossmatched known variable stars within the 47 Tuc field against the DP1 data, recovering three RR Lyrae stars and two eclipsing binaries," they write. Eclipsing binaries can be difficult to detect with ground-based telescopes, and so can some variable stars. Despite "sparse temporal sampling" the ComCam was able to find them.
Crowded stellar fields like the tightly-packed core of 47 Tuc are challenging to observe. Astronomers combine multi-wavelength observations from multiple telescopes to achieve results. These first results from the VRO shows it has a big contribution to make. "Overall, while challenges remain, the DP1 data around 47 Tuc convincingly showcase Rubin Observatory’s strong potential for detailed stellar population and variability analyses in crowded stellar fields," the researchers write in their conclusion.
The Omega Centauri globular cluster. Globulars are characterized by their densely-packed centers, where differentiating between individual stars is challenging.
Image Credit: ESA/Hubble, NASA, Maximilian Häberle (MPIA)
"Continued improvements to the Rubin Science Pipelines and in-kind programs dedicated to crowded-field stellar photometry are expected to deliver even higher-quality results in future DP2 and DR1."
The VRO's main effort will be its 10-year Legacy Survey of Space and Time. The LSST is a wide-field, multi-band survey of the visible sky that is both rapid and deep. Its results will tell us more about multiple issues in astronomy: dark matter, dark energy, supernovae, the Milky Way's structure, and many more. It will also tackle globular clusters.
Astronomers still don't know exactly how GCs form and how they might be connected to a galaxy's dark matter. There are a host of outstanding questions.
Astronomers have hoped that the VRO will not only discover new globulars, but that it will also provide more precise measurements of individual GC stars. By providing precise, multi-band photometry for individual stars over a 10-year period, it will create accurate Color-Magnitude Diagrams (CMD) for vast numbers of stars in GCs. It will also observe tiny shifts in their positions over its decade-long survey. Not only that, but the VRO will observe GCs in other galaxies, allowing comparative study in away that hasn't been possible.
The entire space community has been anticipating the VRO's first light with great enthusiasm. With its first preliminary results in, it looks like the wait has been worth it and the observatory will deliver on its promise.
Mars carbonate rocks seen by Curiosity. Credit: NASA/JPL
Earth is the only habitable world we know of and it remains habitable because of natural cycles that maintain a balanced climate. Earth's carbon cycle plays a critical role in maintaining its temperate climate, and carbonate rocks are a big part of it. Carbonate rocks like limestone and dolomite are huge carbon sinks, and if their carbon was released into the atmosphere, Earth's temperature would spike catastrophically, rendering our planet uninhabitable. Conversely, if all of Earth's carbon were locked away in rock, Earth would likely become glaciated, photosynthesis would cease, and a mass extinction would leave extremophiles as the sole survivors of life's rich, living heritage.
As long as Earth's carbon keeps cycling between rock and atmosphere in a reasonable balance, the planet maintains its habitability.
With Earth's carbon cycle as an example, what can we learn about Mars? There's rock-solid evidence that Mars had habitable conditions in its past, though those conditions haven't persisted. The planet was once warm and wet and is now frigid and dry. What part did a carbon cycle play in Mars's habitability and uninhabitability?
New research in Nature says that Mars went through periods of habitability and uninhabitability due to carbon cycling. It's titled "Carbonate formation and fluctuating habitability on Mars," and the lead author is Edwin Kite. Kite is an associate professor of Planetary Science in the Department of Geophysical Sciences at the University of Chicago.
"The cause of Mars’s loss of surface habitability is unclear, with isotopic data suggesting a ‘missing sink’ of carbonate," the paper states. "Past climates with surface and shallow-subsurface liquid water are recorded by Mars’s sedimentary rocks, including strata in the approximately 4-km-thick record at Gale Crater." Gale Crater was chosen as MSL Curiosity's exploration site largely because Mt. Sharp rises more than 5 km and its layered slopes preserve a stratigraphic geological record of Mars's history. The layers of clays and sulphate-rich deposits show how the planet experienced periods of wetness. The researchers explain that the water was patchy and intermittent, and persisted late into the planet's history.
This figure from 2021 research shows some of the detail in Mt. Sharp's stratigraphic layers. It shows the ancient conditions in which each layer of the mountain formed. Research shows that Mars had alternating periods of wet and dry until it dried out completely about 3 billion years ago.
The researchers draw a parallel between Earth's and Mars's carbon cycles. They write that Mars's patchy and intermittent surface water is best explained by a carbon cycle that locks carbon away into sedimentary carbonate rocks. The research is based on NASA's MSL Curiosity rover and its exploration of Gale Crater. It landed there almost 13 years ago to study the crater's geology. Among other findings, it measured carbonate materials in the crater and found that they make up 11% of the rocks in the region.
Mars once had a carbon-rich atmosphere, and the authors reference a paper by other researchers showing that stratigraphic layers and carbonate rocks in Gale Crater are clear evidence of that cycle. What drove the cycle?
"Here we show that a negative feedback among solar luminosity, liquid water and carbonate formation can explain the existence of intermittent Martian oases," Kite and his co-researchers write. They developed a model to illustrate and explain what happened to Mars.
The researchers say that as the Sun has brightened over billions of years, that increasing luminosity supported liquid surface water on Mars. Just like on Earth, available water combined with atmospheric carbon to form weak carbonic acid. That acid created carbonate weathering that acts as a natural thermostat by sequestering carbon into rock.
But things didn't end there. The atmosphere's loss of carbon reduced carbon dioxide's contribution to Mars's atmospheric pressure. The lower atmospheric pressure allowed water to more easily vaporize away into the atmosphere. The researchers say that Mars underwent cycles of wet periods and dry periods due to chaotic orbital forcing.
This figure shows histograms of the durations of wet events at Gale and globally in blue. Red shows durations of dry intervals within the time span of wet events. The three different lines of each type correspond to three different random orbital histories. Globally dry periods are sometimes very long and could have driven any surface life to extinction.
Image Credit: Kite et al. 2025. Nature.
Mars suffers from unpredictable and chaotic changes to its axial tilt that affects its climate, and this forcing drives Mars's carbon cycle and its ancient periods of wet habitability and dry uninhabitability. "The negative feedback restricted liquid water to oases and Mars self-regulated as a desert planet," the researchers explain. The researchers also explain that Gale Crater's stratigraphic record "...faithfully records the expected primary episodes of liquid water stability in the surface and near-surface environment."
During these cycles, the atmosphere eventually thickens and approaches water's triple point. The triple point is a specific combination of pressure and temperature wherein water can exist in equilibrium in all three phases: vapour, liquid, and solid. Water's triple point is 0.01 °C (273.16 K) and 611.73 pascals (0.006 atm). The researchers explain that this restricted the sustained stability of liquid water and the planet's surface habitability.
This figure from the research illustrates the researchers' model. a shows the distribution of carbonate detections in sedimentary rocks and soil on Mars, with yellow showing abundant detections, red showing no detections, and brown representing unexplored areas. b shows the fluxes and feedbacks for geologic carbon and climate regulation on Mars and Earth. On Earth, volcanic CO2 output is regulated by rapid carbonate formation. On Mars, solar brightening increased the temperature slowly and is balanced by slow carbonate formation. However, Mars' chaotic orbital forcing means that water is only available for carbonate formation intermittently during orbital optima, leading to intermittent periods of warmth and surface water.
Image Credit: Kite et al. 2025. Nature.
The researchers' model has limitations just as all models do. For example, it assumes that the carbonate content at Gale Crater is representative of the whole of Mars. For this reason, they present their research as a testable idea rather than a definitive conclusion.
"Carbonate formation and surface liquid-water availability are linked by a negative feedback that can explain fluctuating habitability on Mars," the authors write in their conclusion. They write that this cycle can potentially explain the intermittent and patchy nature of oases on Mars, and the sedimentary rocks that entomb those oases. They also say their model can explain how Mars's surface habitability came to an end, a question that has motivated scientists for a long time, and speaks to our wider questions about life elsewhere in the Universe.

Guys I recorded this last week and finally got the time to make a video and share it. I caught a white reflective craft on the moons surface and it looks to be almost a triangle in shape. I believe it to be between 1.5-3.5 miles across. I have a whole hour of video of this but only took 4 photos, two caught the craft, the other two did not. I believe the flashing is caused by the spacecraft being loaded or unloaded of heavy materials, the moon still has gravity and it would tilt the spacecraft. This is 100% proof of alien activity on Earths moon. This flashing is coming from the Mara Crisium region.

You ever come across something thats big, I mean real big and others don't seem to grasp its significance? Well thats today. I found a figure that is very reptilian in the mountains of an island called Ellesmere. The figures head is actually not covered in snow...but its neck, chest two arms and two legs are fully covered in snow, but the outline of the mountain range is visibly outlining them for us. This might be more visible if it was all snow or no snow at all, since the head is has not snow. The head...let's talk about that. Its head has only the left side visible, its eye, its open mouth, its long nose and long neck. And the lines or stripes going down and around this reptiles body are just amazing. Only the reptilians made it 25km long.
But why did they do it? Why did we carve human faces in Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, the LeShan Giant Buddha? Because we wanted to remember someone important to us. It's what all intelligent species do...those faces on Mars, the moon ect...that what they are.
A volcano in the throes of eruption truly is a force of nature.
Molten rock, ash and gases from deep within the Earth’s mantle find their way up to the surface and either flow slowly out of a fissure or explode suddenly into the air.
In recent years there have been a number of high-profile eruptions, including ones in Italy and Indonesia.
Now, experts are warning that hundreds of dormant volcanoes around the world will likely become more active and erupt thanks toclimate change.
Researchers from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the USA said melting glaciers could be silently setting the stage for more explosive and more frequent eruptions in the future.
And areas such as North America, New Zealand and Russia could be at risk, they said.
‘Glaciers tend to suppress the volume of eruptions from the volcanoes beneath them,’ Pablo Moreno-Yaeger, one of the study’s authors, explained.
‘But as glaciers retreat due to climate change, our findings suggest these volcanoes go on to erupt more frequently and more explosively.’
Mount Etna, Europe's most active volcano, spewed a gigantic plume of ash four miles (6.5km) into the sky as a pyroclastic flow burst from a crater earlier this month
This is Mount Etna's 14th eruptive phase in the last few months, with the most recent dangerous eruption taking place last summer
The Yellowstone supervolcano is a vast reservoir of magma with the potential to unleash a category eight eruption over 100 times more powerful than Krakatoa, experts have warned
His team used argon dating and crystal analysis across six volcanoes in southern Chile, including the now dormant Mocho-Choshuenco volcano, to investigate how the Patagonian Ice Sheet’s advance and retreat influenced past volcanic behaviour.
By precisely dating previous eruptions and analysing crystals in erupted rocks, the team tracked how the weight and pressure of glacial ice altered the characteristics of magma underground.
They discovered that during the peak of the last ice age – around 26,000-18,000 years ago – thick ice cover suppressed the volume of eruptions and allowed a large reservoir of magma to accumulate up to 15km below the surface.
But as the ice sheet melted rapidly at the end of the last ice age, the sudden loss of weight caused the Earth’s crust to ‘relax’ and gasses in the magma to expand.
This buildup of pressure triggered explosive volcanic eruptions from the deep reservoir.
‘The key requirement for increased explosivity is initially having a very thick glacial coverage over a magma chamber, and the trigger point is when these glaciers start to retreat, releasing pressure – which is currently happening in places like Antarctica,’ Mr Moreno-Yaeger said.
‘Our study suggests this phenomenon isn’t limited to Iceland, where increased volcanicity has been observed.
‘Other continental regions, like parts of North America, New Zealand and Russia, also now warrant closer scientific attention.’
In photo released by Geological Agency (Badan Geologi) of the Indonesia's Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki spews volcanic materials during an eruption in East Flores, Indonesia, Monday, July 7, 2025
Mount Lewotobi Laki-Laki erupted on Monday at 11:05 am local time (03:05 GMT), Indonesia's volcanology agency said in a statement
Mount Spurr, an 11,000-foot-tall volcano, sits 77 miles from Anchorage, Alaska. A recent uptick in seismic activity has had scientists on alert for an imminent eruption
The researchers explained that increased volcanic activity could have global climate impacts.
In the short term, eruptions release aerosol that can temporarily cool the planet, as seen after the 1991 eruption of Mount Pinatubo in the Philippines, which reduced global temperatures by around 0.5°C.
However, with multiple eruptions, the effects reverse.
‘Over time the cumulative effect of multiple eruptions can contribute to long-term global warming because of a buildup of greenhouse gases,’ Mr Moreno-Yaeger said.
‘This creates a positive feedback loop, where melting glaciers trigger eruptions, and the eruptions in turn could contribute to further warming and melting.’
The research was presented at the Goldschmidt Conference in Prague.
According to Eric Dunham, an associate professor of Stanford University's School of Earth, energy and Environmental Sciences, 'Volcanoes are complicated and there is currently no universally applicable means of predicting eruption. In all likelihood, there never will be.'
However, there are indicators of increased volcanic activity, which researchers can use to help predict volcanic eruptions.
Researchers can track indicators such as:
- Volcanic infrasound: When the lava lake rises up in the crater of an open vent volcano, a sign of a potential eruption, the pitch or frequency of the sounds generated by the magma tends to increase.
- Seismic activity: Ahead of an eruption, seismic activity in the form of small earthquakes and tremors almost always increases as magma moves through the volcano's 'plumbing system'.
- Gas emissions: As magma nears the surface and pressure decreases, gases escape. Sulfur dioxide is one of the main components of volcanic gases, and increasing amounts of it are a sign of increasing amounts of magma near the surface of a volcano.
- Ground deformation: Changes to a volcano's ground surface (volcano deformation) appear as swelling, sinking, or cracking, which can be caused by magma, gas, or other fluids (usually water) moving underground or by movements in the Earth's crust due to motion along fault lines. Swelling of a volcano cans signal that magma has accumulated near the surface.
One of science's most challenging puzzles comes from the fact that the universe is currently expanding faster than it was right after the Big Bang.
But scientists now claim they have found a surprising solution to this decades-old problem.
The Earth, the solar system, and the entire Milky Way are positioned near the centre of a giant, mysterious hole, they say.
Since the cosmos is expanding faster in this local void than elsewhere in the universe, it creates the illusion that expansion is accelerating.
This radical solution could help solve the problem scientists call the 'Hubble tension', but it is not without its problems.
Most importantly, our standard view of the universe suggests that matter should be distributed fairly evenly in space without any massive holes.
However, new research shared at the Royal Astronomical Society’s National Astronomy Meeting claims that the 'sound of the Big Bang' supports this theory.
According to these new observations, it is 100 million times more likely that we are in a void than not.
The Earth, solar system, and Milky Way may be stranded inside an enormous, mysterious hole (AI-generated impression)
One of science's big problems is the fact that the rate of expansion in the current universe is about 10 per cent faster than it was in the early universe. Scientists call this problem the 'Hubble tension'
The Hubble tension arises out of something called the Hubble constant, which records the rate at which the universe is expanding outwards.
We measure this by looking at objects like galaxies and working out how far away they are and how fast they are moving away.
Dr Indranil Banik, an astronomer from the University of Portsmouth, told MailOnline: 'In particular, the expansion rate today is about 10 per cent faster than expected.
'The present expansion rate is the most basic parameter of any cosmological model, so this is indeed a serious issue.
'Imagine if two different measurements of the length of your living room differed by 10 per cent, but both rulers were made by reliable companies. It is like that, but for the whole Universe.'
Dr Banik's novel solution to this issue is to suggest that it is just the things near Earth that are accelerating faster, rather than the whole universe.
One solution to the Hubble tension is to assume Earth is in a void about one billion light years across and 20 per cent less dense than the universe at large. Matter would be drawn to the edges by gravity, making it seem like the cosmos was expanding faster near Earth
This could be because the Milky Way is near the centre of a low-density void about a billion light-years across and about 20 per cent less dense than the universe as a whole.
If there were a large region with very little matter inside, objects in this hole would be pulled by gravity towards the denser regions at the edges.
As the void empties out, objects will be moving faster away from Earth than they otherwise would be, creating the illusion that the expansion of the universe has sped up.
If this could be proven, it would resolve the Hubble tension without having to add any extra factors like Dark Energy to explain why the universe is accelerating.
The only issue is that the standard model of the universe typically suggests that matter should be fairly evenly spread out on such a large scale.
However, Dr Banik says that the latest observations of the 'sound of the Bing Bag' support this idea.
In the first few seconds of the Big Bang, all the matter in the universe was in the form of a super-hot plasma made up of photons and particles called baryons.
As this plasma was squeezed by gravity, it bounced back out, sending acoustic 'sound' waves rippling through the cosmos.
Scientists say that this theory is supported by the 'sound of the Big Bang', ripples in matter left behind by the initial explosion and still visible in the lingering radiation
These small ripples spread out in the first few seconds of the Big Bang and were frozen in space, creating patterns in the distribution of galaxies. Measurements of these patterns suggest we may be in a void
When the universe cooled, those waves were frozen in place and left a regular pattern of peaks and troughs in the distribution of galaxies known as baryon acoustic oscillations (BAO).
In a large local void where space is expanding quickly, those ripples will appear to be closer than they should be.
Dr Banik says the latest measurements of the BAO line up better with the existence of a void than they do with a smooth universe.
He says: 'Looking at all the BAO measurements over the last twenty years, the local void model is about one hundred million times more likely than having no void.'
The Big Bang Theory is a cosmological model, a theory used to describe the beginning and the evolution of our universe.
It says that the universe was in a very hot and dense state before it started to expand 13,7 billion years ago.
This theory is based on fundamental observations.
In 1920, Hubble observed that the distance between galaxies was increasing everywhere in the universe.
The Big Bang Theory is a cosmological model, a theory used to describe the beginning and the evolution of our universe, based on observations - including the cosmic background radiation (pictured), which is a like a fossil of radiation emitted during the beginning of the universe, when it was hot and dense
This means that galaxies had to be closer to each other in the past.
In 1964, Wilson and Penzias discovered the cosmic background radiation, which is a like a fossil of radiation emitted during the beginning of the universe, when it was hot and dense.
The cosmic background radiation is observable everywhere in the universe.
The composition of the universe - that is, the the number of atoms of different elements - is consistent with the Big Bang Theory.
So far, this theory is the only one that can explain why we observe an abundance of primordial elements in the universe.
There's no doubt EasterIsland is geographically one of the most isolated places on Earth.
More than 2,000 miles off the coast of Chile, it was first settled by humans around AD 1200, who built its famous enlarged head statues.
Historically, the original inhabitants, known as the Rapa Nui, were assumed to have long been completely shut off from the wider world.
However, a new study by researchers in Sweden challenges this long-held narrative.
They say the 63.2 sq mile island in the southern Pacific was not quite as isolated over the past 800 years as previously thought.
In fact, the island was populated with multiple waves of new inhabitants who bravely traversed the Pacific Ocean from west to east.
'Easter Island was settled from central East Polynesia around AD 1200-1250,' study author Professor Paul Wallin at Uppsala University told MailOnline.
'The Polynesians were skilled sailors so double canoes were used.'
Located in the southeastern Pacific Ocean, Easter Island was first settled by humans around AD 1200, who built its famous enlarged head statues, called moai
There's no doubt Easter Island (pictured) in the southern Pacific is geographically one of the most isolated places on Earth
Due to its remote location, Easter Island is traditionally assumed to have remained socially and culturally isolated from the wider Pacific world.
This idea is reinforced by the fact that Easter Island's famous Moai statues, estimated to have been built between AD 1250 and 1500, are unique to the location.
The huge human figures carved from volcanic rock were placed on rectangular stone platforms called 'ahu' – essentially tombs for the people that the statues represented.
For their study, the team at Uppsala University compared archaeological data and radiocarbon dates from settlements, ritual spaces and monuments across Polynesia, the collection of more than 1,000 islands in the Pacific Ocean.
Their results, published in the journal Antiquity, show that similar ritual practices and monumental structures have been observed across Polynesia.
The experts point out that ahu stone platforms were historically constructed at Polynesian islands further to the west.
These rectangular clearings were communal ritual spaces that, in some places, remain sacred to this day.
'The temple grounds ahu [also known as marae] exist on all East Polynesian islands,' Professor Wallin added.

Archaeologists have analysed ritual spaces and monumental structures across Polynesia, questioning the idea that Easter Island (pictured) developed in isolation following its initial settlement
EASTER ISLAND TIMELINE
13th century: Easter Island (Rapa Nui) is settled by Polynesian seafarers.
Construction on some parts of the island's monuments begins.
Early 14th to mid-15th centuries: Rapid increase in construction
1600: The date that was long-thought to mark the decline of Easter Island culture.
Construction was ongoing.
1770: Spanish seafarers landed on the island. The island is in good working order.
1722: Dutch seafarers land on the island for the first time.
Monuments were in use for rituals and showed no evidence of societal decay.
1774: British explorer James Cook arrives on Rapa Nui
His crew described an island in crisis, with overturned monuments.
The team agree that an early population of people spread from the west of the Pacific to the east before encountering Easter Island and populating it around AD 1200.
But they argue that Easter Island was populated several times by new seafarers – not just once by one group who remains isolated for centuries as previously assumed.
'The migration process from West Polynesian core areas such as Tonga and Samoa to East Polynesia is not disputed here,' they say in their paper.
'Still, the static west-to-east colonization and dispersal suggested for East Polynesia and the idea that Rapa Nui was only colonized once in the past and developed in isolation is challenged.'
Based on their evidence, they also think ahu originated on Easter Island before the trend spread east to west across other western Polynesian islands during the period of AD 1300-1600.
It was only after this that Polynesian islands – including but not limited to Easter Island – might have become isolated from each other.
As hierarchical social structures developed independently – at Easter Island, Tahiti and Hawai'i for example – large, monumental structures were built to display power.
Overall, the study indicates there were robust 'interaction networks' between Polynesian islands, which allowed the transfer of new ideas from east to west and back again.
The Moai are monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island, between AD 1,250 and 1,500
Ultimately, arrival of European explorers at Easter Island in the 18th century led to a rapid decline of the population, brought on by murder, bloody conflict and the brutal slave trade – although the population there may have already been weakening.
Today, Easter Island is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with only a few thousand inhabitants.
But it attracts large numbers of tourists, largely thanks to its monumental and world-famous stone statues that stare sternly out over the island.
Tourism, which has grown exponentially on the island over the last 20 years, has come at a price, according to co-author Professor Helene Martinsson-Wallin.
'When I was there in the 1980s, the sandy beach was white and there were almost no people around,' she said.
'When I came back in the early 00s, I thought the sand looked blue, and when I looked closer I saw that it was due to tiny, tiny pieces of plastic washed up by the sea from every corner of the Earth.'
The Moai are monolithic human figures carved by the Rapa Nui people on Easter Island, between 1,250 and 1,500 AD.
All the figures have overly-large heads and are thought to be living faces of deified ancestors.
The 887 statues gaze inland across the island with an average height of 13ft (four metres).
Nobody really knows how the colossal stone statues that guard Easter Island were moved into position.
Nor why during the decades following the island’s discovery by Dutch explorers in 1722, each statue was systematically toppled, or how the population of Rapa Nui islanders was decimated.
Shrouded in mystery, this tiny triangular landmass, stranded in the middle of the South Pacific and 1,289 miles from its nearest neighbour, has been the subject of endless books, articles and scientific theories.
All but 53 of the Moai were carved from tuff , compressed volcanic ash, and around 100 wear red pukao of scoria.
What do they mean?
In 1979 archaeologists said the statues were designed to hold coral eyes.
The figures are believed to be symbol of authority and power.
They may have embodied former chiefs and were repositories of spirits or 'mana'.
They are positioned so that ancient ancestors watch over the villages, while seven look out to sea to help travellers find land.
But it is a mystery as to how the vast carved stones were transported into position.
In their remote location off the coast of Chile, the ancient inhabitants of Easter Island were believed to have been wiped out by bloody warfare, as they fought over the island's dwindling resources.
All they left behind were the iconic giant stone heads and an island littered with sharp triangles of volcanic glass, which some archaeologists have long believed were used as weapons

Differences in the gravitational pull between the Earth and the Moon will make July 9, July 22 and August 5 unusually short.
(Image credit: Francesco Carta fotografo/Getty Images)
Earth is expected to spin more quickly in the coming weeks, making some of our days unusually short. On July 9, July 22 and Aug. 5, the position of the moon is expected to affect Earth's rotation so that each day is between 1.3 and 1.51 milliseconds shorter than normal.
A day on Earth is the length of time needed for our planet to fully rotate on its axis — approximately 86,400 seconds, or 24 hours. But Earth's rotation is affected by a number of things, including the positions of the sun and moon, changes to Earth's magnetic field, and the balance of mass on the planet.
Since the relatively early days of our planet, Earth's rotation has been slowing down, making our days longer. Researchers found that about 1 billion to 2 billion years ago,a day on Earth was only 19 hours long. This is likely because the moon was closer to our planet, making its gravitational pull stronger than it is now and causing Earth to spin faster on its axis.
The Effects of Climate Change: Crash Course Biology #9
Since then, as the moon has moved away from us, days on average have been getting longer. But in recent years, scientists have reported variations in Earth's rotation. In 2020, scientists found that Earth was spinning more quickly than at any point since records began in the 1970s, and we saw the shortest-ever recorded day on July 5, 2024, which was 1.66 milliseconds shy of 24 hours, according to timeanddate.com.
On July 9, July 22 and Aug. 5, 2025, the moon will be at its furthest distance from Earth's equator, which changes the impact its gravitational pull has on our planet's axis. Think of the Earth as a spinning top — if you were to put your fingers around the middle and spin, it wouldn't rotate as quickly as if you were to hold it from the top and bottom.
With the moon closer to the poles, the Earth's spin speeds up, making our day shorter than usual.
These variations are to be expected, but recent research suggests that human activity is also contributing tothe change in the planet's rotation. Researchers at NASA have calculated that the movement of ice and groundwater, linked to climate change, has increased the length of our days by1.33 milliseconds per century between 2000 and 2018.
Single events can also affect Earth's spin: the 2011 earthquake that struck Japanshortened the length of the day by 1.8 microseconds. Even the changing seasons affect Earth's spin,Richard Holme, a geophysicist at the University of Liverpool, told Live Science via email.
"There is more land in the northern hemisphere than the south," Holme said. "In northern summer, the trees get leaves, this means that mass is moved from the ground to above the ground — further away from the Earth's spin axis.” The rate of rotation of any moving body is affected by its distribution of mass. When an ice skater spins on the spot, they rotate faster when their arms are tight to their chest, and slow themselves down by stretching their arms out. As Earth’s mass moves away from its core in summer, its rate of rotation must decrease, so the length of the day increases, Holme explained.
Of course, on the days in question our clocks will still count 24 hours. The difference isn't noticeable on the individual level.
The only time we would see a change to time zones is if the difference between the length of day is greater than 0.9 seconds, or 900 milliseconds. Though this has never happened in a single day, over the years our clocks fall out of sync with the position of the planet. This is monitored by the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS), which will add a "leap second" to UTC as needed to bring us back in line.
Rapa Nui Was NOT as Isolated As Previously Thought
For decades, archaeologists have painted a picture of Rapa Nui (Easter Island) as the ultimate frontier of Polynesian civilization - a remote outpost that developed in complete isolation after its initial settlement around 1200 AD. This narrative has dominated Pacific archaeology, portraying the island's famous moai statues and ceremonial complexes as the products of a society cut off from the wider Polynesian world.
However, groundbreaking new research from Uppsala University, published in Antiquity has shattered this long-held assumption, revealing that Rapa Nui was not merely a recipient of Polynesian culture but an active innovator whose ceremonial ideas spread back across the Pacific, influencing the development of sacred sites throughout East Polynesia.
The Westward Wave: How Easter Island Exported Sacred Architecture
The revolutionary findings, soon to be published in the prestigious journal Antiquity, present compelling radiocarbon evidence that challenges the traditional west-to-east cultural diffusion model. Professors Paul Wallin and Helene Martinsson-Wallin, leading experts in Pacific archaeology, have discovered that the complex marae temple structures - rectangular ceremonial clearings that served as the spiritual heart of Polynesian communities - actually originated earlier on remote Rapa Nui than on the supposedly more connected central islands.
A traditional marae temple structure on Raiatea in French Polynesia. These rectangular ceremonial complexes, once thought to have developed from west to east, now appear to have originated on remote Easter Island before spreading westward.
"The most important finding is that, based on C-14 dating, we can observe an initial west-to-east spread of ritual ideas," explains Professor Wallin in the Antiquity press release. "However, the complex, unified ritual spaces (known as marae) show earlier dates in the east." This discovery fundamentally rewrites our understanding of cultural exchange in the ancient Pacific, suggesting that innovation could flow in both directions across the vast oceanic distances.
The research team's comprehensive analysis of archaeological data across East Polynesia has revealed three distinct phases of ritual development that paint a far more nuanced picture of ancient Pacific civilization:
Phase One: The Initial Expansion (1200-1400 AD) During the first phase, ritual practices focused on fundamental activities like burials and communal feasting, marked by simple stone uprights. This period reflects the traditional west-to-east migration pattern, as settlers carried their ancestral practices from the core areas of Tonga and Samoa to the far reaches of the Pacific.
Phase Two: The Rapa Nui Innovation (1400-1600 AD) The second phase witnessed a revolutionary development: the emergence of sophisticated marae temple complexes. Contrary to all previous assumptions, radiocarbon dating reveals that these elaborate ceremonial structures first appeared on Rapa Nui before spreading westward through existing exchange networks to central East Polynesia. This represents a complete reversal of the expected cultural flow.
Phase Three: The Age of Monumental Expression (1600-1800 AD)The final phase saw increased isolation leading to internal cultural development. As hierarchical societies evolved independently on islands like Rapa Nui, Tahiti, and Hawaiʻi, massive, monumental structures were erected as displays of power and spiritual authority, including the iconic moai statues that would become Rapa Nui's most famous legacy.

How did Earth, alone among the Solar System's rocky planets, become the home for life? How, among all this frigid lifelessness, did our planet become warm, hospitable, and life-sustaining? The answer to these questions is complex and multi-faceted, and part of the answer comes from cosmochemistry, an interdisciplinary field that examines how chemical elements are distributed.
The Solar System is a busy place where everything is in motion. It was even more chaotic 4.5 billion years ago, with planets still forming and planetesimals and planetary embryos whizzing around and crashing into one another. Somehow, in all that chaos, Earth received more than its share of carbonaceous chondrites and the amino acids and other life-enabling chemicals that came with them.
Cosmochemistry studies have shown that between 5% and 10% of Earth's mass came from carbonaceous chondrites that crashed into the young planet. Studies also show that a large chunk of that came from the Theia impactor that created the Moon. To test these ideas more rigorously, a trio of researchers used dynamical simulations of the Solar System's formation to see if they could replicate it.
The research is titled "Dynamical origin of Theia, the last giant impactor on Earth." The lead author is Duarte Branco from the Institute of Astrophysics and Space Sciences at the Lisbon Astronomical Observatory in Portugal. The research will be published in the journal Icarus.
One of the critical distinctions in cosmochemistry is the difference between carbonaceous chondrites (CCs) and non-carbonaceous meteorites (NCs). It divides the Solar System's meteor population into two groups and suggests that the Solar System contains two distinct reservoirs of material. CCs formed further from the Sun, likely beyond Jupiter, and carry more volatiles like water and organic compounds with them. NCs include things like iron meteorites, and contain fewer volatiles.
In order to test the idea that Theia delivered CCs and volatiles to Earth, the researchers ran detailed simulations of the Solar System. These were N-body simulations of the later stages of the growth of terrestrial planets.
The simulations began in the late stages of planetary growth after the Solar System's gaseous disk was dispersed. The available solid mass was divided into planetesimals and planetary embryos. The simulation included CCs that were scattered inward as Jupiter and Saturn were still growing and accreting matter. Because of the size distinction between planetesimal and planetary embryos, embryos have a higher possibility of interacting with the terrestrial planets and delivering CC material.
The researchers ran three types of simulations. The first they call small only and includes only small CC objects, or planetesimals. The second they call large only and includes only large CC objects, planetary embryos. The third includes both CC planetesimals and embryos and is called the mixed scenario.
For a subset of 10 simulations from each of those scenarios, they included the effect of the giant planet dynamical instability. This is known as the "Nice model" in astronomy and describes how the giant planets shifted their orbits from where they initially formed.
The goal was to determine how CCs and NCs were distributed in the Solar System and to understand how Earth ended up with more CCs than the other rocky planets, especially Mars. The researchers also wanted to understand if the Theia impact could be responsible for delivering a large amount of Earth's CC material.
One clear result is that the role of giant planet instability, especially Jupiter's shift to a different orbit, had a pronounced effect on Earth's accretion of CC material.
This figure shows snapshots from the mixed simulation scenario without giant planet dynamical instability. In early times, CC objects and NC bodies mix together where the terrestrial planets are forming. Some CCs remained orbiting between planets or were still too far to collide. By the simulation's end, four terrestrial planets existed, including good analogues for Earth and Mars.

When the researchers added giant planet dynamical instability, things looked even more interesting. "The giant planet instability dramatically changed the evolution of the system causing a strong pulse of eccentricity excitement, which lead to a wave of collisions and ejections," the authors write. However, the final state of the system didn't change much.
This figure shows eccentricity and position snapshots over the time of the simulation, including giant planet dynamical instability. The final snapshot is the real Solar System.

A critical part of the simulations concerns the Theia impactor. Previous research suggests that Theia may have been a carbonaceous object. If that's true, much of Earth's life-giving habitability may have resulted from that collision.
"In the mixed scenario with no giant planet instability, Earth’s final impactor included a CC component in more than half of all simulations. In 38.5% of simulations, the final impactor was a pure CC embryo, and in another 13.5%, the impactor was an NC embryo that had previously accreted a CC embryo," the researchers write.
Overall, the simulations paint a picture of the early Solar System where two distinct rings of planetesimals. An inner ring consisting of rocky planetesimals and an outer ring of carbonaceous chondrites. Later, as the ice giants migrated inward, they propelled CC material into the inner Solar System. Some of these were trapped in the asteroid belt, while more massive ones were preferentially scattered into the orbits of the rocky planets. "The late-stage accretion of the terrestrial planets involved a series of giant impacts between NC embryos and planetesimals, with occasional impacts of CC objects," the authors explain.
This scenario explains several things about the Solar System. It explains the masses and orbits of the terrestrial planets, and the orbital distribution of asteroids. It also matches the CC mass fraction of Earth and Mars, where Mars lacks the same concentrations of CC material as Earth. If the small only simulation were correct, where CC material was only in the form of planetesimals, the CC mass fraction of Mars and Earth would be roughly the same.
This figure compares the timing of the last giant impacts in 10 mixed simulations that were run both with and without the giant planet instability. The black line represents the point where both values are equal. Each point has two halves with the left half representing the impactor type in the simulation without the giant planet instability and the right half representing the simulation with the giant planet instability. Dry NC impactors are black, CC embryos are blue and CC+NC mixed embryos are green.

The researchers set out to show that, in line with other research, Theia could've been Earth's final large impactor and that it contained ample CC material. They appear to have succeeded.
In the simulations, Earth's final giant impact was with Theia, and that object had higher concentrations of CC material which helped make Earth habitable. That result is in line with scientific thinking. The work shows that the last impact was after between 5 to 150 million years after gas dispersal. A large fraction of those were within 20 to 70 million years. There are uncertainties in the timing of the Theia impact and these results work within those.
The simulations also support other conclusions showing that CC embryos and planetesimals could've been accreted throughout Earth's growth, but were concentrated in later phases of growth.
"Within the context of this scenario, the last giant impactor on Earth contained a CC component in roughly half of all of the mixed simulations," the authors write. "In the majority of these (38% of simulations), Theia was a pristine CC embryo, and in the remainder of cases Theia was an NC embryo that had previously accreted a CC embryo."
The research also shows that Jupiter played an important role in the Solar System's architecture. It not only truncates the asteroid belt, but played an important role in determining the final composition of the terrestrial planets by scattering CC material from the outer Solar System into the path of the rocky planets, especially Earth.
A million things had to be just right for Earth to become the life-sustaining world it is today. How likely it is that there are other worlds out there like it is unknown. It may take more than being in a habitable zone for an exoplanet to support life. There may be a bewildering number of variables that have to go right, including outer giant planets that migrate and deliver carbon to rocky worlds in habitable zones.

Huge glowing sphere just appeared out of nowhere shocks Alberta residents
An Alberta couple captured something extraordinary on camera during the evening of July 2, 2025. Just after a powerful lightning strike near their home in Rich Valley, Alberta, they saw what they described as a ball of fire hovering roughly 20 feet above the ground.
“It just appeared out of nowhere,” one of them recalled. “A big, glowing sphere hanging in the air — and then, just like that, it vanished.”
The main stream media are trying to blame this on the weather speculating the glowing orb could be ball lightning, an elusive and still-unexplained weather phenomenon reported for centuries. Often described as floating spheres of light, ball lightning has defied scientific consensus.
But could it be more than just an atmospheric anomaly?
A similar sighting occurred in 2016 in Russia’s Novosibirsk Region, where a massive, luminous sphere was seen drifting silently across a field before vanishing into nearby woods. That object, see image below, too, appeared after intense lightning activity and left experts just as baffled.
Is this truly a rare natural phenomenon? Or are we witnessing something beyond the scope of conventional science, a window into technology or intelligence we don’t yet understand?
Alien abductions are inherently odd. The very notion that these alien intelligences are whisking people away for reasons unknown is to a lot of people absurd. Yet some accounts are even weirder than others. Recently, I covered some of these bizarre abductions, but there are so many of them I decided to bring some more to the table, so sit back, get your tinfoil hats on, and enjoy.
A very strange series of events began to unfold on one January morning in 1954. On this dark early morning, at around 2 AM, a man by the name of Armando Zurbaran was in his car along dim winding roads on his way from Mexico City to Acapulco, in Mexico, in order to meet up with a business partner the following morning. At the time, this was a somewhat perilous journey, with rugged roads twisting and meandering through switchbacks and winding mountain passes, and Armando needed to give his full attention to the treacherous road ahead. He was completely on alert, watching that remote lane flash out of the night to pass him in the beams of his headlights, but despite his completely awake state, he claims that he was suddenly overcome by an intense tiredness, a “hypnotic state of lethargy,” as he would call it. And so would begin one of the odder, yet mostly forgotten, alien abduction reports on record.
Realizing that this was a dangerous state to be driving on while trying to navigate the harrowing terrain, Armando pulled his vehicle over to the side of the road in order to relax for a minute, and this is when he noticed a strange sight ahead. There, hovering right over the middle of this remote mountain road before him was what looked to be a luminous, brightly lit metallic disk of some sort, and as he tried to peer into the nearly blinding light, he could notice that he was no longer alone out on that road. Standing there on each side of the strange object were two very tall figures, who seemed to be dressed in some sort of one-piece suit cinched with very wide belts in the middle. They appeared to have long, flowing hair, and for a moment, they just lurked there, mostly obscured in the glare of that disk. As he sat there trying to figure out what to do, he claims that he suddenly felt himself compelled to get out of his car and begin walking towards these strangers, as if he wasn’t in control of his limbs, and things would only get weirder from there.
He could see as he drew closer that the figures appeared to be male, although they were rather androgynous in appearance, and that they were very human and Nordic-looking, with blonde hair and blue eyes. These two beings were quick to approach Armando to help him steady himself, and then they escorted him closer to what was now clear to be their craft, all as a buzzing sensation filled the man’s skull. When Armando was aboard the glowing ship, he looked around and asked why he had been brought there, to which one of these strange blonde entities replied in fluent Spanish:
"You are neither the first nor last earthman to be chosen for testing. Our task, slow though it may seem, is designed to persuade. We choose the likeliest, most malleable persons for contact, so that they might better transmit our messages."
Armando was not sure what to make of this cryptic statement, but before he was even able to begin processing it all, the two entities began showing him a series of images from his own life, like a dream being played out over the wall of the ship. Some of the scenes he saw playing out before him were from his most intimate moments and half-forgotten corners of his memories, and he began to get the feeling that these creatures could either read his mind or had been watching him for a very long time. The images then stopped, and Armando was shown around the ship, which he was informed was no longer on the ground and not even on Earth, but rather far out into the solar system. This was startling, as the man had not felt any sense of movement or acceleration, and when he asked about this, he was allegedly told that they used a “gravity repulsion system,” without further elaboration. They also said that they were able to neutralize any debris in their path, and let Armando look out a portal, although he was unable to see anything other than a grey mist and a sea of darkness.
Armando then asked whether they were going to the aliens’ home planet, and they responded in the negative, then they proceeded to just sort of cruise about over several days. During this time, he became acclimated to the way their ship worked and spent much time with his mysterious captors. He would claim to have been perplexed by some of the technology aboard their ship, and he was especially intrigued by the bathroom facilities, of which he would say:
“I shall never be able to forget it. That bathroom was a new and unimaginable experience for me. Standing upright, facing an angle of the wall filled with tiny holes, I was covered in warm air, and as it grew stronger, it became transformed into damp air, impregnating my skin like a warm, wet breeze. When I was completely drenched, I was offered a sort of liquid soap, which I rubbed all over myself, from head to toe. Standing once more before the warm air sprinklers, I felt the soap begin to evaporate and my skin become completely clean. The air then ceased to be damp, turning dry and warm instead of becoming colder until agreeably cool.”
Armando also claimed that he ate with the beings, describing their food as being very much like what one would eat on Earth, including meat, vegetables, cheese, and even butter, although none of it anything he had seen on his own planet, and usually accompanied by a milky liquid that he was told was made from materials from their home world and was a chief form of sustenance. They claimed that they also utilized some vegetables and fruits grown on Earth, such as mangoes, which featured heavily in their diet and which they couldn’t seem to get enough of. The food, they claimed, was sort of beamed aboard the ship from an outside source via “telepathy” whenever they needed it. During his discussions with the entities, he would also learn that their average lifespan was 250 years, that they had a society in which everyone was treated completely equally, and that their whole way of life was heavily based on a sort of religion. They believed that a being known as “The Master” or also “The Beloved Number Nine,” had governed them for thousands of years, and kept harmony in their society.
After their time together was over, the aliens then whisked the man back to Earth, where he was dropped off right at the car, which was sitting there as he had left it. Armando bid them farewell and continued on his journey towards Acapulco, and he soon realized that only 90 minutes had passed since he had left his vehicle, despite his assertion that he had been on that ship for a few days traveling who knows where. Indeed, he wouldn’t even miss his meeting with his business associate. Making it all even odder still was that 15 years later, in 1969, Armando would be driving outside of Mexico City and stop to pick up a hitchhiker who was a tall, thin man with blonde hair and blue eyes. This hitchhiker would then admit that he was one of the crew members of that spacecraft all of those years before, but as to his purpose or what they talked about after this, Armando would never say.
Throughout the 1950s, there would be numerous other reports of what have come to be called the “Nordic” aliens, which, like in Armando’s report, appear as tall, blonde, angelic-looking beings, and it is hard not to wonder whether they were all connected somehow. This report would be written about by such esteemed UFO researchers as Albert Rosales, Scott Corrales, Ed Komarek, and Marcus Lowth, and it has remained an obscure yet intriguing report ever since. What were these entities that he encountered along that lonely road? Where did they come from, and why were they so human in appearance? Were they aliens, interdimensional beings, or even, as some have suggested, literal angels? Or is this just a tall tale and the ramblings of a delusional individual, perhaps fueled by the tiredness brought about by the road and his stress to make it on time for his appointment, and if so, how did this simple rural farmer come up with all of this fantastical technology? There are no answers to any of these questions, and it is a case that we can only add to the pile of truly outlandish alien abduction reports.
Moving along, one of the weirdest alien abduction accounts there is began in the early morning hours of April 6, 1974, in the remote farming town of Kitami, in Hokkaido, Japan. On this dark morning, a farmer by the name of Yoshihiro Fujiwara was sound asleep in his bed when he was pulled from his dreams by the sudden pounding of someone at his door and his dog barking and howling outside. Considering his was a fairly isolated farmstead in the middle of nowhere, it was odd indeed to get visitors at 3 in the morning, and the rather annoyed Fujiwara at first thought it was merely some kids messing around. There would have been no reason in this safe little hamlet to think it was anything else, and he trudged to the door to fling it open to a sight that would change him forevermore. And so would begin one of the most flat-out bizarre and controversial alien encounter reports that Japan has ever seen.
There standing in the chilly early morning darkness was a diminutive, 3-foot-tall being dressed in a clear one-piece suit that seemed to be made of transparent vinyl, and the thing itself was only passingly humanoid, resembling what the witness would later call a combination of “starfish and human,” with four tentacle-like appendages, a bulbous head reminiscent of an octopus clad in a blue helmet, slanted eyes, and a strange V-shaped set of nostrils, the whole of it covered with mottled brown and slimy, bumpy toad-like skin and rested on two of its stalk-like limbs and rounded nubs for feet. It was completely silent and motionless, except that its weird conical helmet had an antenna jutting from it, which generated a visible electrical humming charge that ominously rippled through the air.
The startled farmer and this anomalous being stood there for several moments merely staring at each other, perhaps each as surprised as the other, before that strange frozen moment in time was shattered by a sudden movement from the creature as it flicked one of its tendrils to point up towards the sky. This was followed by a ray of blinding light that washed over everything, generating a profound heat that sent the frightened farmer reeling back into his house to slam the door shut. A quick look outside showed that the brilliant orange colored light was emanating from an illuminated disc-like craft that measured around 26 feet across and was shooting off beams of orange light.
If Fujiwara thought he was safe merely gawking from his window at this outlandish sight, he was wrong, as he suddenly felt his feet being pulled forward by some inexplicable force. At first, he was merely dragged across the floor, much to his amazement, but then he allegedly began to hover, before finally being levitated fully off the ground to go flying out of the window and towards the inscrutable floating disc with its scintillating beams of light. He was drawn faster and faster towards the object, seemingly on a collision course, but rather than smack against its metallic side, he found himself being drawn through its walls to be dumped upon the floor of the craft.
The interior of the craft was described as being bright blue, with some sort of writing on the walls that the farmer could not fathom, and the whole of it all overlaid with a repulsive stink that made him feel lightheaded. It was then that two creatures identical to the one who had freaked him out at his doorstep approached him to tell him telepathically, “No danger. We promise to release you at your home.” As peaceful as this sounded, the two entities nevertheless made to grab him and forcefully hold him down, upon which Fujiwara felt the fear left him and his survival instinct take over, tearing away and dashing through an open hatchway to go careening through air to the ground below, which luckily for him was only around 10 feet down.
Fujiwara vaguely recognized that he was around 2 miles from where he had left, and went running wildly towards the house of a person he knew in the area, who let him in. It was at their house that he would realize that a full hour had passed, even though to him it seemed that it had been mere moments since he had been taken aboard the strange craft by its odd octopoid inhabitants. Although the experience had been baffling and not a little terrifying, Fujiwara was at least relieved that it was over, and he quietly went back to his home to try and find some way to get over what had just occurred. Little did he know at the time that it was not quite over just yet.
The very next evening, Fujiwara was sitting alone in his house, his thoughts no doubt wandering back to those strange tentacled dwarves and their otherworldly craft, when he was suddenly overcome with a sharp pain worming its way through his ears and fingertips. He felt himself slipping into a daze, and for some reason, his hands took on a life of their own and began to scrawl strange letters onto a piece of paper of their own volition. This was all followed by a voice that reverberated through his skull, which commanded him, “When the disc lands on the mountain, you will come and board by yourself,” which was accompanied by a potent vision of the area they wished him to come to, left blazing into his mind. After that, the pain abruptly left, leaving Fujiwara there shaken and with bizarre hieroglyphics etched onto paper by his hand, but the meanings of which he did not know.
The farmer took the voice’s command as being the nearby Nikoro Mountain, and although he was still frightened by his ordeal, he felt a compulsion to go there to see what would happen. To this end, he gathered up some supplies and two companions to join him, and they set out, unsure of what awaited them up on that lonely peak. Fujiwara then made his way alone to the area he had seen in his vision, where there awaited that same luminous disc-shaped craft, and he boarded it without a fight. Once aboard, the aliens then supposedly took him on a flight into space, flying around the moon and around the earth twice, all within about the space of an hour. When they returned from their dizzying journey, the farmer then lost consciousness, after which he was apparently just left lying there on the mountainside for his friends to find.
This wasn’t even the end of it all, as Fujiwara would claim that the last trip had left him with strange telekinetic powers that allowed him to move objects and bend spoons, and he was telepathically invited on yet another excursion on April 13, 1974. This time, the bizarre beings took him on a journey that went around the planet Jupiter, as well as the moon of Saturn, Titan, where one of the creatures would allegedly go out to retrieve a rock from the surface as a souvenir for him to keep.
This mysterious rock would go on to prove to be rather controversial, indeed. It was sent to scientists for analysis, but came back as just one of the many common rocks from a Kitami cave, which brought a fair amount of ridicule down on Fujiwara and his astounding tale. In the meantime, the farmer would begin to address himself as the earthly representative of the “Summon Call Space Union,” and he claimed that his telepathic powers increased exponentially, allowing him to levitate objects, predict catastrophes, and even teleport across vast distances, of which he would say:
“I can teleport to a star 250 million light years away in 6 minutes. My role is delaying natural disasters such as earthquakes and eruptions.”
He would also claim that he could actually travel within the Earth to stop volcanic eruptions, and pull together tectonic plates to prevent earthquakes. It is all bizarre to say the least, but one Japanese UFO researcher named Ninichi Arai has offered evidence that there was something to this when he found that several other locals who did not know Fujiwara also reported seeing strange lights in the skies during the same time frame, and there were others who claimed to have been first hand witnesses to the farmer’s mental powers, somewhat corroborating his weird tales. Was this all the doing of entities from another world or merely the tripping of balls? Is there anything to this account, or is Fujiwara a disturbed individual and unreliable witness? It is hard to know for sure, but it is a wild ride all the same, and goes to show that some alien abduction accounts can be truly surreal affairs to be sure.
From the 1970s, we have another outlandish account. 50-year-old school teacher Elsie Oakensen was in most ways unremarkable. She had a contented life in Church Stowe in Northamptonshire in the United Kingdom with her husband, John, and her life was more or less uneventful. However, on the night of November 22, 1978, this was all about to change. On that evening at just a little past 5 p.m., she was driving on her way home from work on her way out of Daventry on the A45 and on to the busy A5 road. It was a mundane routine, a drive she took every day and which only took 15 minutes, so as she stared out at the lane lines flickering by, she would not have expected the strange events that were about to transpire.
As she approached her home village of Church Stowe, just 2 miles out, she noticed something weird in the sky. She at first could make out what she called “two very bright lights, one red and one green” about 100 to 150 feet over the road, and her first assumption was that it was an extremely low plane, but as she drew closer, she could see that it was no normal aircraft. She could now see that it was a “dumbbell-shaped object” made of what appeared to be a smooth plastic material the “color of old pewter,” and that it was hovering there completely motionless. At this time, she would later say that she had felt a strange sensation, as if time had slowed down or that she was in slow-motion or underwater. Her first reaction was to stop the car, but the road at the time was full of traffic and she could not find a place to easily and safely pull over, so she continued along, driving directly under it and noticing that it was completely silent and had no windows, portals, or any discernible propulsion system.
As she drove along, she could not get her mind off what she had seen, and she wondered if any of the many cars on the road had seen it as well. She could not resist looking back to see if it was still there, and it was, so curiosity got the better of her and she risked an accident to pull the vehicle over on a side road. As she stood there gaping at it, just hanging there like some inscrutable monolith, the green light, which had until then been a solid illumination, began blinking. This snapped her out of her wonderment, and she warily got back into the car to continue her way home, but almost immediately her car started to lose power until the power cut off completely, and it stalled. She tried several times to start it, but it wouldn’t turn over. It was strange because she had just had the car serviced earlier that very same day, but as she puzzled over this new predicament, things would get even odder still. She would say:
“A green light started to flash. I decided to restart the engine but when I turned into the village something strange happened – the car, which had just been serviced that day, completely cut out. Eventually it restarted but I had only travelled about 100 yards when it stopped again. The natural light disappeared and everything was in absolute blackness. Then suddenly a brilliant white circle of light about a yard in diameter shone on the road. The very next moment, as if someone had flicked a switch, natural light returned and I was driving my car normally.”
She didn’t get far before a bright light appeared very near the front of her car, followed by one at the rear and one on each side of her. These lights were almost blinding in their intensity and started to alternately switch on and off in some sort of pattern or sequence. As she tried to process this eerie situation, the lights all suddenly simultaneously blinked out, and Ellie was amazed to find that she had travelled a considerable distance down the road and that 15 minutes had passed that she could not account for. She would tell her husband about what had happened, and the next day she would notice a strange scar on the back of her knee that she had never seen before, and have a series of intense headaches so excruciating that she almost passed out from them. Now realizing that something truly outlandish had happened to her, she decided to report her experience.
When the report of what had happened to Ellie hit the news, it captured the attention of UFO researchers, and the British UFO Research Organization (BUFORA) reached out to her to find out more about what had happened. Ellie herself was a bit taken aback because she would claim she had never really even heard of UFOs before and had no interest in the topic, but she was finally convinced to undergo hypnotic regression to possibly glean some memories of what had happened after those strobing lights had surrounded her car. It would be a rather frightening session, to say the least, and during it Ellie would say to the researchers:
“My car engine has stalled, I feel hot. A band has tightened around my head as it did at lunchtime. I am getting hotter and beginning to sweat. The pressure hurts. It hurts my head. A brilliant white light is shining in my eyes, a pure white light, very bright. Circles of very bright light radiate from it as it comes closer until I can only see the top of the circles. My body gets hotter. The pain in my head is intense. I feel as if I am sitting. I can’t feel my legs. My arms are shaking. I am very frightened. The radiating circles of light seem to change to a small brilliant circle, obviously going away from me. It’s still light, but hazy and through this haze materialize two shapes. The first is a long, thin shape that appears to the left and then disappears. The second is more rectangular and appears to the right – disappears – then both appear together. They shine through the haze, a silver glow outlines both grey-coloured shapes which are smooth and rounded, rather ghostlike. The bright light now shines as a small circle in the distance. I get hotter, my arms shake more, my head hurts dreadfully. I am terrified.”
Ellie then began screaming and having some kind of panic attack or seizure, so the session was cut short. After that, Ellie tried to go about getting her life back to normal, and would write two books on her experience called One Step Beyond (1996) and Into The Unknown (1999). UFO researchers have long wondered just what happened to her and there have been all sorts of ideas tossed around, including that she somehow hallucinated the whole episode or that it was a hoax, but she has been described as a quiet teacher with a career, a reliable witness who would be unlikely to just fabricate a story about aliens and UFOs. Indeed, she and her husband faced much ridicule from the community in the wake of the incident, so why would she risk her career and peaceful life for some made-up event? BUFORA also vouched for her honesty and sincerity, calling her an ideal witness. Another idea is that this really was an alien craft and that it had somehow chosen her, a notion Ellie herself believed. She also entertained the thought that perhaps only she could see the object, and that it was a sign of some sort of psychic power manifesting within her. She would say of it:
“I feel that consideration could be given to the possibility that it may have been my first experience of clairvoyance. I wonder? But perhaps not, because there were physical effects also.”
There are certainly some interesting details to this case. One is that the witness is considered to be so reliable, and another is that during that very same month, there was an intense wave of UFO encounter reports coming in from all over the southwest region of England, where Ellie’s incident happened, and indeed the area has long been considered a UFO hotspot. Also of interest is the fact that there were no corroborating reports of the object she had seen, which is rather odd considering the A5 is a very busy road and by her own admission there had been a lot of traffic, as well as the fact that the object was claimed to be hovering directly over the road. This could be because no one wanted to report it, but it could also be because only Ellie could see it, either through psychic powers, hallucination, or hoax; we’ll probably never know because she has already passed away to take any secrets to the grave with her. We will probably never know what really happened out there, and it remains just another very bizarre tale of inexplicable alien abduction among many others.
Moving into the 80s, in October of 1989, Steve and Dawn Hess headed out for a weekend of camping and hunting on the Mojave Reserve, in the Mojave Desert of the southwest United States. It was supposed to be a relaxing getaway for the young, happy couple, a chance to get away from their two small children for the weekend and have some time alone together. As they drove out towards the Midhills camping ground, just inside the Nevada border, they did so in very good spirits, having had a bit of luck gambling at a casino earlier in the day and looking forward to their trip. They had been planning it for a long time, and to be out there in the remote, scenic locale was like a dream come true, but the dream was about to become a nightmare, and they were about to become the center of a series of harrowing, otherworldly events that have never been explained.
It would turn out that the campground was uncommonly full, and so they decided to drive out into the wilds in their camper to go camping off the beaten path in a secluded valley between the Tabletop and Woods Mountains. That evening, the sky was full of a multitude of stars, like millions of tiny diamonds spread out over an expanse of black felt, and they decided to start a fire and have a romantic dinner there under that sprawling vista of twinkling lights. It was as Steve was cooking up a steak that things began to get odd. He noticed a pinpoint of light moving about over the nearby Tabletop Mountain that, for some reason, instilled a great sense of unease in him. He found himself perplexed and mesmerized by the gliding light, which looked like another star moving about in the sea of stars, and it wasn’t until Dawn called out to him that he snapped out of it. He tried to direct her attention to what he had just seen, but the light was gone.
Steve tried to put the weird episode out of his mind, and the two poured some wine, had their romantic dinner there under the dazzling night sky, and then settled down to do a bit of stargazing. As they sat there pointing out star constellations, they noticed a particularly bright star that wasn’t supposed to be there, and they soon realized that it was not a star at all when it started moving. It was then joined by several other lights, around nine in total, after which they created a sort of 'M' formation. Their first impression was that it had to be aircraft from the nearby Nulles Air Base out on nighttime maneuvers, but then, as they looked on, small red lights descended from the larger white ones and began silently gliding towards the desert below, blinking and pulsating as they did so. It was about then that they noticed that the night sounds of the desert had ceased, as if a veil of silence had descended upon them, and through that eerie clinging quiet, the red lights approached them. These bizarre lights then circled above them and configured and reconfigured into different formations as their flashing intensified, to the point that Dawn was beginning to panic.
These lights began to flash and pulse faster and faster until they suddenly went out together. Shortly after this, there were sounds out in the brush, like something scampering about out there in the wilds, and there seemed to be more than one of whatever it was. The frightened couple hurried into their camper, and Steve grabbed his hunting rifle, thinking they were about to be attacked by wild animals. They could see out in the darkness what looked like glowing red eyes circling them, and at one point, something jumped onto the hood of the camper and scurried across to jump back down on the other side. Steve was about to take a shot at one of the red-eyed shapes, but Dawn stopped him, telling him that she had a very bad feeling that it would not be a good idea to fire on them, which she felt was oddly being projected into her head. As they peered into the murky night, the creatures got bolder and close enough that they could see that these were no wild animals, but rather what they would later describe as “small red-eyed gremlins.”
The couple at this point were paralyzed with terror, and the entities roaming about outside seemed to sense this, becoming bolder and running right up to the camper to leap onto its roof and bang on the sides, the whole time jabbering with each other in some alien language. As this happened, nine tall, thin, translucent beings with large, deep, featureless black eyes, much different than the “gremlins,” bloomed out of the darkness and surrounded the camper, peering in at the terrified couple. As these beings loomed outside, Steve and Dawn would later claim that their minds had been filled with thoughts and visions that seemed to be telepathically forced into their heads, and as this happened a large, bright object descended nearby, almost right over them, after which their camper began to buck and shake wildly as a fog or mist filled the vehicle. The light got brighter and brighter, and then Steve and Dawn lost consciousness.
When they woke up, they were still in their camper, which was now filled not with the light of that bizarre craft but rather that of the coming morning. There was no sign of the creatures they had encountered the previous evening, and indeed, a look around the area showed no evidence that they had ever been there at all. There were no footprints, no sign of damage to the brush, nothing. The only thing they could find were two red pin pricks in Dawn’s neck that had not been there before. They could not remember anything about what had happened to them after that large light had appeared, they had no idea where the creatures had gone, but they did know that it had not been a dream or a figment of their imagination, and that they had experienced something truly outlandish out there in the desert. They quickly packed up and got out of there as fast as they could, driving home mostly in silence and trying to process what they had been through.
In the coming days, they mostly didn’t talk about what had happened, but it would seem that their ordeal was not over. They experienced intense, vivid nightmares, physical symptoms such as headaches and nausea, and then there was the really spooky stuff. They experienced seeing lights in the sky that seemed to be following them, intense feelings of being watched, strange sounds inside and outside of the house, and their children began to tell of seeing little “red-eyed monsters” prowling about their bedroom at night. On one particularly terrifying occasion, Steve and Dawn were woken by the panicked screams of their son and rushed to his room to find him suspended in the air, “spinning like a top.” Dawn would even tell of being accosted by unseen hands.
At their wits’ end, they decided to undergo hypnosis with Dr. William Anixter, who, through a series of sessions, was able to uncover what had happened during their lost time. According to Steve and Dawn, they had been brought aboard a massive craft of some kind and subjected to a battery of medical experiments and tests, many of which were quite painful and one of which had left those red marks on Dawn’s neck. At several points during the hypnosis sessions, Dawn was seen to speak in a voice that was not her own, as if she were channeling an outside force, and on one of these occasions, she allegedly eerily and cryptically said, “I know where the Universe ends. Our Universe ends when its matter stops mattering to us, and starts mattering to them.”
Dawn and Steve Hess would keep mostly quiet about their bizarre experience for years, but author Ron Felber would find out about it and approach the couple about possibly writing a book about it. Interestingly, Felber was known as a true crime author, and had never had any real interest in UFOs or paranormal phenomena, but after talking to the Hess’s, he changed his tune. He would say of this in an interview with Shadows Of Your Mind magazine:
“I met them through a man called Paul Moran, an employee who was working as a sales rep for the company I ran. He lived in Southern California and confided in me that he had a best friend (Steve) who he’d played varsity football with while a student at the University of Redlands. Paul told me that his friend had had an alien experience in the Mojave Desert that had “changed his life forever” and though he’d promised not to tell anyone about Steve’s experience, he thought that as a writer I’d be interested in hearing about it and that telling his story to someone like me would be “cathartic”.
My first impression before meeting the Hess’ was that I wasn’t interested in writing about “alien abductions”. The subject was not one that fell into the genres of writing I’d done before, and I wanted to focus on true crime stories or fiction. However, after meeting them, that all changed. I found Steve and Dawn to be exceptionally stable, upwardly mobile, well-educated, and rational. They were solidly middle class with two children, a mortgage, and hopes of a successful career as a project manager for the construction of shopping malls for Steve, and ardent in her ambitions to raise a stable family for Dawn.
More than intriguing, I found their story to be absolutely mind-blowing. The detail, the emotional manner in which they told the story, and the sweeping nature of their experience told me that this was a one-of-a-kind experience, unlike anything I had ever personally heard or heard about. It was, to me, as if a curtain had been lifted and an entire realm of existence heretofore unknown to humankind suddenly exposed. The authenticity of the Hess’s themselves told me that this was undoubtedly true and that their story needed to be shared with the world. As a writer, I know a heart-stopping true story when I hear one, and this was definitely one. What the Hess’s story did do was convince me that there exists another realm of existence. Humans, albeit rarely, can sometimes catch glimpses of something that is perhaps more real than the existence we live now, or believe we are living.”
Felber would go on to write a book on their experiences called "The Mojave Incident," which is a harrowing and detailed account of the ordeal of that fateful evening and the traumatic series of events that unfolded. He has also kept in touch with Steve and Dawn Hess, who now have six children, and claims that they have continued to experience strange phenomena right up to the present, although it would seem no further abductions.
We are left to wonder what is going on here. Is this a case of a genuine abduction, and if so, where did these entities come from and what did they want? We will never know for sure, and these all remain rather odd and spooky cases of the alien abduction phenomenon.
Nikola Tesla made many predictions for the 21st century that turned out true in the past two decades.

Back in 1926, Collier’s magazine published a conversation with the inventor Nikola Tesla, the content of which, at that time, was shocking. In it, the renowned scientists made some unbelievable predictions (for his time) about the future and the 21st century, in particular.
Over the years, he made many predictions, many of which came true. Examples: A different order will arise where women will be dominant in the future. Humanity will begin to communicate with each other thanks to simple handheld devices. The planes will have unmanned control and so much more. Here are ten predictions of the future by Nikola Tesla.
1. Wireless connection
Suppose the industrialist John Morgan had not been stingy in supporting Tesla’s developments. In that case, the Croatian-born scientist might have gone as far as the invention of the Internet – at least he argued that the Wardenclyffe Tower could wirelessly transmit voice, text, and images anywhere in the world. He argued that pictures had already been transmitted over wires (telegraphs) over short distances, but in the future, wireless transmission will limit the distance.
2. Drones/Remote Controlled Tech
A boat without oars, which by itself glides on the water – such a sight appeared before the eyes of those who watched Tesla’s demonstration experiment in 1898. Using the remote control, batteries, and switches invented by him, the engineer from the shore turned the boat’s steering wheel, started the propeller, and lit the side lights on board, which looked incredible at the time.
In fact, Tesla presented the world’s first real prototype of a robot 22 years before the Czech writer Karel Čapek came up with the very definition of such a technique. It has taken a firm place in the modern world and continues to develop.
3. Automated Workforce
In the 1930s, technology had advanced to the extent that an automated workforce performed regular human activities. In 1935, Nikola Tesla predicted that robots and machines would almost replace human labor.
While this still has not happened, it is more than obvious that machines are already replacing human hands in many industries, and experts often point out this as one of the most critical problems of the future when many people will lose their jobs due to technology.
4. Cheap Renewable Energy
Nikola Tesla believed that the whole world is filled with infinite energy, which, with the proper level of technical equipment, can be used for free, wherever and whenever. Tesla also believed that we could utilize water to generate cheap renewable energy that would replace the regular expensive sources. He even wanted to give people free energy, which was not well accepted by his financiers.
5. Mobile Phones/Smartphones
Nikola Tesla predicted the world would have small wireless devices combining various technologies and wireless connections. While he did not say the words mobile phone or smartphone, his description from 1926 does sound similar.
He described a device that would allow us to see and hear each other as if we were speaking face to face, and it would be small enough to carry in a pocket.
6. Self-driving cars
In 1898, Nikola Tesla proposed the construction of an automobile carriage that could perform various operations by itself. It took another 100 years before it became a reality, but now, a company that took the same name (Tesla) has proven that this is the future technology.
7. Rise of environmental protection
One of Tesla’s most important predictions is the rise of environmental protection. That is, global efforts will increase. He envisioned this would happen by 2035, but it happened much sooner – the American Environmental Protection Agency was founded 35 years later, in 1970.
8. Female Empowerment
Tesla predicted that women would play a dominant role in the future. He suggested that women would receive equal education to men and will start taking leadership positions in society.
9. Science will become more important to society
In his time, politics and war were the predominant topics in society. One of Nikola Tesla’s predictions suggested that newspapers would focus more on science than politics in the future, and society would be much more interested in the latest discoveries than warfare. While politics still occupy the first pages of newspapers, news channels, and social media, people are generally more interested in science.
10. Wireless News
Tesla predicted that printed newspapers would be replaced and news would be delivered wirelessly. He envisioned that everything would be accessible to people at home every day.

But this latest find might be one of the strangest sightings yet.
Keen-eyed internet sleuths have spotted what appears to be a massive skull lurking in the waters of a Canadian island.
Users have been baffled by the sighting, with some claiming that it might even be a sign of alien interference.
The strange structure can be found on the northern coast of Cormorant Island, just off Canada's northeast coast.
When viewed from the north, a sandbank beneath the water reveals a distinct shape of a human skull.
Scott Waring, founder of UFO Sightings Daily, who spotted the shape, told MailOnline: 'I believe ancient alien visitors created the skull. They did this to leave a sign behind for others to see that says, "we were here first".'
However, scientists say there is a much simpler explanation for this confounding illusion.
Social media users have been baffled after spotting what seems to be a skull lurking in the waters of a Canadian island
The strange skull-like formation can be found on Google Maps by searching for the village of Alert Bay, the island's only settlement.
However, you will need to rotate the map 180 degrees in order to see the 'face' looming out from the waters.
On social media, commenters flocked to share their amazement at this sinister discovery.
One commenter wrote: 'That's actually incredible. It's amazing!!'
Another chimed in: 'Help me out here, in the words of X-Files, I want to believe.'
While the sight might be a mystery to some, Mr Waring is convinced that it must be extraterrestrial in origin.
The UFO hunter says that the sandbar's human-like appearance is 'not a coincidence'.
He adds: 'The details of the skull are completely accurate, but on a scale of 100 meters across.'
The strange structure can be found on the northern coast of Cormorant Island (pictured), just off Canada's northeast coast
But not everyone is on board with these claims of alien activity.
UFO researcher Philip Mantle told MailOnline: 'There are no signs that alien life forms have visited the earth in antiquity and left evidence of such.
'It could well be a natural rock formation that looks skull-like. A bit like seeing faces in the clouds.'
In fact, scientists say there is a very good reason why all sorts of geological structures get mistaken for faces or skulls.
When faced with a structure containing intricate and varied patterns, the brain turns this noisy, dynamic information into patterns and objects that we can understand.
The brain gets this right most of the time, but sometimes certain predispositions cause errors which disturb our perceptions.
Dr Robin Kramer, an expert on face perception from the University of Lincoln, told MailOnline: 'Our face detection system has evolved to be great at detecting faces and it makes more sense to err on the side of caution by occasionally seeing faces where there aren’t any, rather than missing faces where there are.'
Some believe that the structure was carved by ancient aliens, but scientists say there is a more likely explanation (stock image)
Scientists say that we are likely to misinterpret geological structures such as this sandbar as faces due to a psychological phenomenon called pareidolia
Dr Kramer says: 'Face pareidolia explains why we might see faces in geological structures, as well as pretty much anything else.'
Scientists think that we evolved this sensitivity towards faces because it helped our ancestors find friends and spot enemies.
For hunter-gatherers, it was better to briefly mistake a bush for your neighbour's animal than miss someone sneaking up on you.
Professor Kevin Brooks, a psychologist at Macquarie University, told MailOnline: 'We tend to classify anything vaguely face-like as a face until proven otherwise – it’s safer that way.
'Evolutionary psychologists speculate that we evolved this mechanism to help our survival, and increase our chances of passing on our genes, bringing forth another generation of people who are also good at face detection.'
Some people are more sensitive to faces and so might experience more pareidolia in their daily lives.
Dr Susan Wardle, a researcher at the National Institutes of Health, told MailOnline that pareidolia isn't 'usually' a sign of any psychological or neurological issues.
However, a high rate of pareidolia might be a sign of someone's bias towards believing in the paranormal.
The phenomenon, called face pareidolia, is when people identify meaningful patterns in inanimate objects. This is more common in people with strong beliefs in the paranormal (stock image)
A Finnish study conducted in 2012 found that people with religious or paranormal beliefs were much more likely to see faces in random stimuli.
This could explain why alien hunters seem to find faces or patterns in geological features so frequently.
Dr Wardle concludes: 'Most people who see faces in things recognise that the faces are not real.
'Issues can arise when people interpret visual patterns to have meaning that they do not, or when they have difficulty distinguishing true perceptions from illusory ones.'
Pareidolia is the psychological response to seeing faces and other significant and everyday items in random stimuli.
It is a form of apophenia, when people see patterns in random, unconnected data.
There have been multiple occasions when people have claimed to see religious images and themes in unexpected places.
On the red planet, one of the most famous is the 'face on Mars' spotted by one of the Viking orbiters in 1976.
This was later proven to just be a chance alignment of shifting sand dunes.
An image captured in 2015 by NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO), which has been in orbit around the red planet since 10 March 2006, revealed a face-like feature at one of many monitoring sites at the South Pole residual cap (SPRC) on Mars
A mysterious streak appeared on weather radar over Washington DC on Thursday, sparking theories of weather modification or visitors from another planet.
The anomaly, visible on radar loops, was shared online by Kari Lake, a special advisor to the US Agency for Global Media, who asked: 'Anyone know what is shooting across the radar over Washington DC around 3:30pm?'
That was around the time a severe thunderstorm rolled into the area, unleashing heavy rains, damaging wind gusts and lightning, which lasted for about one hour.
The radar tracked the weather system affecting the region, and a distinct, linear streak moved across the screen. It was not a typical weather pattern, like rain, snow, or hail, which would have appeared more scattered.
Matthew Cappucci, senior meteorologist at the app Lake used, explained that the strange line or streak on the radar was not caused by weather or anything unusual.
Instead, it was likely caused by something physical, like a water tower or a cell tower, located east of the radar station near Dulles Airport.
These structures can block or reflect the radar's signals, creating a false image on the radar screen. This is a common problem with radar systems.
A mysterious streak appeared on weather radar over Washington DC on Thursday, sparking theories of weather modification or visitors from another planet.
'That can cause a bit of the emitted radar beam to bounce back to radar/cause a spurious signal,' Cappucci said.
He added that these types of artifacts are quite common on weather radar. You might also notice things like ground clutter or super refraction.
'Occasionally, we can even detect birds, butterflies, planes, and meteors!' the meteorologist shared.
But not everyone is convinced, as one X user commented: 'Sounds like something a meteorologist would say….if they were CIA!!!'
However, Lake appeared satisfied with the explanation and thanked Cappucci.
The destructive storm toppled trees that crushed cars and houses while cutting power to numerous neighborhoods.
More than 15,000 Dominion Energy customers, mostly in Fairfax County, were without power as of noon Friday. Arlington County and Alexandria were also hit hard.
More than 3,000 Pepco customers in Montgomery County were without power, along with 455 in Prince George's County and over 870 in Washington DC.
Crews are working around the clock to restore service, according to Pepco.
The anomaly, visible on radar loops, was shared online by Kari Lake, a special advisor to the US Agency for Global Media
Why It Caused Alarm
1. Rogue Brightness– High-altitude rocket engines glowing brightly in pre-dawn darkness are uncommon in urban skies.
2. Inner-City Focus – Navigation controllers and pilots in DC’s active airspace initially interpreted it as unknown, feeding tension.
3. Historical Echoes – The 1952 “Washington UFO flap” still lingers, including radar sweeps over the Capitol, fueling today’s unease.
Implications
1. Heightened Public Sensitivity to Aerial Events
In a city shaped by politics, intelligence, and security, even a routine sky phenomenon can spark widespread alarm—highlighting how jittery the public is about national airspace anomalies.
2. National Security Awareness Gaps
The fact that multiple civilians mistook a rocket launch for a potential threat or UFO reveals potential communication gaps between space agencies, air traffic control, and the general public.
3. Renewed Demand for UFO Transparency
Events like this stoke continued public interest in government disclosure on aerial phenomena, especially in a post–UAP hearing era where the line between legitimate sightings and confusion remains blurred.
4. Misinformation Risks During High-Alert Times
Social media panic over the incident shows how quickly false narratives can spread, especially when tied to sensitive airspace like Washington, D.C.
5. Civil-Military Space Coordination Needs
Incidents like this may increase calls for better coordination between private space launches (like SpaceX) and civil/military aviation authorities, especially in sensitive corridors near the capital.
Wind gusts reached 61 mph at Washington Reagan National Airport and 66 mph at Dulles International Airport as severe storms swept through the region. Multiple thunderstorm warnings were issued during the evening commute.
Despite the intense weather, no serious injuries were reported.
That was not the case in New York City, which was also hit by the massive storm.
Matthew Cappucci, senior meteorologist at MyRadar Weather, who controls the radar that Lake used, offered a clear explanation of the situation. Unfortunately, it's nothing to do with aliens, weather-altering tech, or an early Christmas visit.
"This is the result of an obstruction from a structure east of @NWS_BaltWash's Dulles-based radar. (This is common with water towers/cell towers blocking the radar beam)," Cappucci explains.
"That can cause a bit of the emitted radar beam to bounce back to radar/cause spurious signal. These type of artefacts are common. You will also see things like ground clutter, superrefraction, etc.; sometimes we can even spot birds, butterflies, planes and meteors on weather radar!"
Cappucci also shared a video where he went through the process of discovering this radar anomaly, pointing out the exact tower that caused the radar to show the bizarre line, and how, in a thunderstorm, this can cause readings to bounce towards the tower and back again.
.@KariLake actually asked a really good question about the radar around Washington D.C. — so I dug for answers. The anomaly stems from a partial beam blockage of @NWS_BaltWash’s radar by the antenna at @Dulles_Airport’s Fire Station 304. Mystery solved! @MyRadarWX

👀What is this zooming across the radar over Washington DC? 👀 I just pulled up radar to check on the massive storm overhead and noticed an anomaly on the radar loop. Anyone know what is shooting across the radar over Washington DC around 3:30pm?
Yassin Khalifa, 15, was struck by lightning in Central Park while enjoying a picnic with his friends.
'I leaned up against a tree, and I told them, `Oh, guys, let´s ride out the storm,´ which in hindsight might not have been the best idea,' Khalifa said.
Khalifa said he was knocked unconscious for several minutes.
Crystal Mateo, 17, told the New York Times she witnessed the scene and saw Khalifa's friends frantically calling for help and trying to revive him.
'It was scary,' she said. 'I was crying.'
Khalifa told WABC he was conscious when he was taken by ambulance to a hospital, where he was treated for burns on his neck and leg. Khalifa said he's expected to make a full recovery.
'Apparently, I´m pretty lucky, because my spine was directly against the tree and no nerve damage happened. So I´m like, not losing any sort of motor function,' Khalifa said. 'So I´m pretty happy about that.'
Lightning kills around 30 people a year in the United States, according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control. Strikes, though, are usually not fatal. About 90 percent of people injured by a lightning bolt survive.

This new image shows the central region of the Bullet Cluster, where two cosmic giant galaxy clusters are colliding with each other. The galaxies and foreground stars in the image were captured by Webb in near-infrared light (yellow and white). One of the most iconic cosmic scenes in the Universe lies nearly 3.8 billion light-years away from us in the direction of the constellation Carina. This is where two massive clusters of galaxies have collided. The resulting combined galaxies and other material are now called the Bullet Cluster, after one of the two members that interacted over several billion years. It's one of the hottest-known galaxy clusters, thanks to clouds of gas that were heated by shockwaves during the event. Astronomers have observed this scene with several different telescopes in multiple wavelengths of light, including X-ray and infrared. Those observations and others show that the dark matter makes up the majority of the cluster's mass. Its gravitational effect distorts light from more distant objects and makes it an ideal gravitational lens.
Astronomers pointed the infrared-sensitive James Webb Space Telescope (Webb) to view the Cluster in part to help refine its mass. The Bullet is actually two clusters, a smaller sub-cluster called the Bullet, and the larger one it collided with in the past. The observations provided extremely detailed images of the cluster's galaxy members, as well as a view of hundreds of other faint ones that lie beyond. They also mapped the distribution of hot gas, which appears to be in separate "blobs". Those gaseous regions helped them learn more about the distribution of dark matter in the cluster. “With Webb’s observations, we carefully measured the mass of the Bullet Cluster with the largest lensing dataset to date, from the galaxy clusters’ cores all the way out to their outskirts,” said Sangjun Cha, the lead author of a paper published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. Not only that, but the Webb view also allows scientists to study the distant galaxies "behind" the cluster in great detail. Their distorted images also give clues to the distribution of dark matter in the lens.
This image shows the different wavelengths at which scientists studied the Bullet Cluster using JWST's NIRCam instrument. The circles show the two clusters (in blue with their hot gas clouds in red). The one on the left shows an elongated shape, which suggests it's been through more than one collision.

“Webb’s images dramatically improve what we can measure in this scene — including pinpointing the position of invisible particles known as dark matter,” said Kyle Finner, a co-author and an assistant scientist at IPAC at Caltech in Pasadena, California. Dark matter plays a role, not just in the Bullet Cluster's hot gas clouds, but also in the light from distant galaxies passing through and around the cluster.
What Happened with the Bullet?
When you look at the combined infrared and X-ray views of the Bullet Cluster, among other things, you see those blobs of hot gas. One is in the form of a bow shock whipped up when the smaller sub-cluster member passed through the larger galaxy cluster. That sent the temperature of the gaseous regions up to millions of degrees, which released X-ray emissions detectable by Chandra.
A Chandra X-ray view of hot gas clouds in the Bullet Cluster. This one gives the cluster its distinctive name. It lies entirely separated from the dark matter in the cluster. This indicates something about how dark matter behaved in the collision.

To understand why astronomers find the Bullet Cluster so fascinating, it helps to understand how it got the way it appears in Chandra and Webb observations. Well more than four billion years ago, these two galaxy clusters began a close approach. Both clusters were rich in stars, gas, and dust. Like the rest of the Universe, they were permeated with dark matter. Eventually, the two clusters collided. The stars were largely "unhurt" by this, other than perhaps having their velocities through space slightly altered. The collision basically caused a separation of the hot gas and dark matter. The gas, being affected by ram pressure (caused by something moving through the interstellar/intergalactic medium), slowed down due to the collision. The dark matter, which interacts primarily through gravity, passed through without any problem. This separation provided key evidence for the existence of dark matter. "As the galaxy clusters collided, their gas was dragged out and left behind, which the X-rays confirm,” Finner said. Webb’s observations show that dark matter still lines up with the galaxies — and was not dragged away.
What the Cluster's Gravitational Lens Reveals
While we can't see the dark matter at all, its presence around and within the Bullet Cluster's galaxies turns it into a giant gravitational lens. Think of it as a cosmic magnifying glass that shows otherwise unseen things. It also does something remarkable: “Gravitational lensing allows us to infer the distribution of dark matter,” said James Jee, a co-author, professor at Yonsei University, and research associate at UC Davis in California. Jee suggests that we think of this gravitational lensing as working the same way that water in a pond magnifies the view of things in the pond. “You cannot see the water unless there is wind, which causes ripples,” Jee explained. “Those ripples distort the shapes of the pebbles below, causing the water to act like a lens.”
That lens reveals thousands of distant galaxies whose light is "smeared" and distorted by the gravitational effect of the dark matter lens. The distribution of those galaxies across the lens also helps astronomers map the distribution of the dark matter that makes it up.

Now that astronomers know where that dark matter is distributed in the cluster, the images and data also show that the particles (no matter what they're made of) don't affect each other beyond whatever gravitational attraction they have toward each other. It implies that they act independently of each other. Now the trick is to figure out what kind of particles act as dark matter has been observed to do. Webb’s observations also show that dark matter still lines up with the galaxies — and was not dragged away during the chaos of the cluster collisions. These new observations place stronger limits on the behavior of dark matter particles.

The Head of a ‘Giant’
The Bullet Cluster is huge, even in the vast expanse of space. Webb’s NIRCam covered a significant portion of the hulking debris with its images, but not all of it. “It’s like looking at the head of a giant,” said Jee. “Webb’s initial images allow us to extrapolate how heavy the whole ‘giant’ is, but we’ll need future observations of the giant’s whole ‘body’ for precise measurements.”
In the near future, researchers will also have expansive near-infrared images from NASA’s Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which is set to launch by May 2027. “With Roman, we will have complete mass estimates of the entire Bullet Cluster, which would allow us to recreate the actual collision on computers,” Finner said.
The Bullet Cluster is found in the Carina constellation 3.8 billion light-years from Earth.
The James Webb Space Telescope is the world’s premier space science observatory. Webb is solving mysteries in our solar system, looking beyond to distant worlds around other stars, and probing the mysterious structures and origins of our universe and our place in it. Webb is an international program led by NASA with its partners, ESA (European Space Agency) and CSA (Canadian Space Agency).

Colorful sprites, or transient luminous events, flash above clouds in a video taken by NASA astronaut Don Pettit aboard the ISS.

NASA astronaut Nichole Ayers captured a stunning image of a rare red lightning phenomenon known as a “sprite” from the International Space Station on July 3. The jellyfish-shaped electrical burst was seen rising above a massive thunderstorm over Mexico and the southern U.S., including parts of California and Texas.
NASA astronaut Don Pettit captured breathtaking video of a rare atmospheric phenomenon from his perch high above Earth on the International Space Station.
While the International Space Station (ISS) was orbiting above South America, Pettit recorded what are known as Transient Luminous Events, or TLEs. These are bright, colorful flashes of light faster than lightning and are sometimes referred to as "sprites."
Pettit was able to view the sprites from directly above, looking down at what is known as the nadir, the point directly below a particular location. "OK, this is kind of out there and caters to your inner Uber-Geek," Pettit posted to X (formerly Twitter along with the video. "Nadir view of Transient Luminous Events
Sprites are large-scale electrical discharges that occur high in the mesosphere, triggered by positive lightning strikes.
Part of a group of upper-atmosphere events called Transient Luminous Events (TLEs), sprites are still not fully understood, despite decades of research.

Sprites like the ones Pettit captured on video occur much higher than regular lightning. Their name is an acronym, short for stratospheric perturbations resulting from intense thunderstorm electrification.
Sprites are created when electrical discharges created by lightning shoot upward, creating bursts of plasma in the ionosphere, found around 50 miles (80 km) above Earth's surface. They were not captured on camera until 1989.
